- 0:45Welcome back, corner podcast. My name is Curtis Wilson, I'm
- 0:52Brian seagull buddy, we're back on a Tuesday, its West, Virginia
- 0:55hate week. Hey let's get heyo and man.
- 0:59Hey hey tweek part 1 of the Season West Virginia weak man.
- 1:05And man, we got a lot to uncover tonight but God, it's it did in
- 1:11two nights. It's Thursday night in Lane
- 1:14Stadium, Thursday night, Thursday night, the place where
- 1:20Thursday Night Football originated and people knew it
- 1:25could be something big. And I think it's the 26th
- 1:28anniversary, something like that.
- 1:29This year of, actually playing West Virginia, on the Thursday
- 1:33night, I know where it like 20, where year 22 from One of the
- 1:39nastiest games ever in the series.
- 1:41When Andre Davis wants to fuck off for three touchdowns and way
- 1:45Ward killed, a kid on that punt return.
- 1:48It's still in probably every single person watching tonight
- 1:53or listening has seen that play but if you're not you hokey fan
- 1:57or a young hokey fan, go to stop pop, press pause or step away
- 2:02from the live stream. Go to YouTube Type in Wing,
- 2:06Ward, Virginia Tech. And let it do the search.
- 2:14Nothing but fire, buddy, you doing I'm doing good man.
- 2:21I'm doing good. It was a, it's been a good week,
- 2:24so far. Been got some work done today.
- 2:29Got to do a little segment on on a wad radio today, with Adam
- 2:35Epstein radio 910 here in the r-va, the best Sports
- 2:40Programming in the RV, a, if you did.
- 2:42Then catch my man. Sigler out here 2 p.m. can check
- 2:46in for a quick hit. There was awesome second hit
- 2:49there, right. I went, I went through and I I
- 2:54was I was cleaning everything up there.
- 2:55We had the, I think the J mu beat writer was on there first
- 3:00and then we had the, the 24/7 writer for UVA was in the middle
- 3:07slot there. So, Yeah, I kind of felt I kind
- 3:11of finish things off there for that segment.
- 3:14Very nice. Very nice.
- 3:16Well y'all like we've said at the beginning, this is West
- 3:18Virginia, it is hate week but before we get into know, the
- 3:22enemy of West Virginia. We've got to recap, what
- 3:24happened? Last weekend, lot of things went
- 3:26on before, and during that game, the Hokies take a win over
- 3:31Wofford 6:33, Hokies go to two and one slightly off our
- 3:36predictions slightly off, we're about 20 points short, on each
- 3:39side. But nonetheless, a win, is a win
- 3:43in this situation. And before we get into the
- 3:46actual game itself, let's talk about the injuries in game and
- 3:49before the game, you know, you had three key starters, not even
- 3:55playing, and Keshawn King, Colin garbett, and Josh fuga.
- 3:59And Brian, when you saw on didn't see, or when you heard
- 4:03saw that, those guys weren't playing, did it?
- 4:05Did it hurt your gutter? Was it more of a We can win
- 4:09without them today. Yeah.
- 4:12I mean I know we alluded to it a little bit last week when we
- 4:15were doing the the preview episode, I was going to be fine.
- 4:18If King and Caleb Smith, both sat this one out.
- 4:23We need them more this week than we needed them against against
- 4:27Wofford. Obviously, Caleb Smith played,
- 4:30got a little banged up on a deep ball kind of late in that second
- 4:34quarter, but we had quiche Shaun King out.
- 4:39We had Taiwan garbage out, Josh fuga, sat I'm okay with that.
- 4:44Like I said that, that's, that's a setup where you're going to
- 4:46need those guys. For this stretch, we've got
- 4:49coming up, so not just West Virginia, but the entire October
- 4:52stretch, which is probably the most difficult section of this
- 4:57schedule this year, having those guys as fresh as we can have
- 5:00them for that for that push. I think it's going to be more
- 5:02important than whatever they could have given us against
- 5:05Wofford. So after it moved by the
- 5:06coaching staff and unfortunately As I said, Smith got banged up
- 5:11mid game seems to be. All right.
- 5:13As has been practicing so far this week.
- 5:16Same story with Silas Zante went down but apparently could have
- 5:21went back in but precautionary just kept him out again.
- 5:25It was Wofford game was in hand. Yeah, I need to push it.
- 5:29Anyone that got nicked mid game with where that's for, was when
- 5:32it was basically, they weren't able to do anything offensive ly
- 5:36other than get a little first down and then essentially You
- 5:39either get a sack or tackle for loss.
- 5:40Nobody was going back in the game as far as king garbett and
- 5:43food go. You already hit the nail on the
- 5:45head, you don't play them this game.
- 5:47Now could that score had been potentially uglier with King in
- 5:52the game? Yeah.
- 5:53And does the offense? Maybe need confidence.
- 5:55Maybe. Yeah.
- 5:56But on the other hand, he's Sean King.
- 5:58Is the game breaker on that offensive for he and Caleb Smith
- 6:01and like you said, even without you would have been found Caleb
- 6:04not playing, which I think was still resulted in a Hokies win.
- 6:08Caleb. Slightly Nick than the
- 6:09immediately pull them. Is it one of those you could win
- 6:11back in probably but it's one of those weeks to wear if you're
- 6:16hearing about these guys injuries and West Virginia was
- 6:19last Saturday I think every single one of them would have
- 6:21been on the field. I think Caleb would have came
- 6:23back. I think Silas would came back.
- 6:25I think it's showing roster management that sometimes a
- 6:29little Nick you don't need a guy to go back in games in hand,
- 6:32let's move on. Yeah, with Caleb it seems like
- 6:35it's like a rib issue, which those things can linger.
- 6:37We know that. That's pain tolerance.
- 6:40Oh, right, let laying out for that, that, uh, that, that deep
- 6:44ball I think is what kind of probably triggered that for him
- 6:48and it's pain tolerance, but at the same time, if it's one of
- 6:53those lingering things and you feel like you can take care of
- 6:57things without him sit him down. He came out, he went back and
- 7:03when he came out in the second half, he wasn't wearing any
- 7:05pads, he was just in the Jersey. So he knew his they was over.
- 7:10We at that point, we were handling them very much seem
- 7:14like Unless something drastically changed in the the
- 7:20trajectory of the game that was going to be in hand at halftime.
- 7:24You know, we came out, didn't play as well in the second half
- 7:27as I was hoping. But, you know, again, as you
- 7:30said, a wins a win. Yeah, exactly.
- 7:33Exactly. All right, let's kind of take a
- 7:35quick high level overview of some things.
- 7:37You wanted to see last week, Brian.
- 7:38I think we did see a few of these things.
- 7:41The first is you said you wanted to get away from the
- 7:43predictable, play calls the predictable Run play calls.
- 7:47Early and drives. And I think from what I saw
- 7:50watching the game and getting in, we saw a lot more passes, a
- 7:53lot more quick plays on first down in the ball, in the air,
- 7:56versus running the ball. Yeah, they definitely were
- 8:00hitting more of those passes in early Downs.
- 8:04That I think that helped get the offense in a little bit more
- 8:06Rhythm. We still didn't finish as many
- 8:09drives, as I would have wanted to go against that defense.
- 8:12And I think that's Stills. You know, that's where we're
- 8:14still a work in progress, with the with finishing drives and
- 8:17closing out drives, we had the you know, the Miss block on the
- 8:21on the 4th and 1 on the first drive, after you had some
- 8:24productive plays before that, that got us in a pretty good
- 8:27position there. To get some points.
- 8:30Then you had a couple others where, you know, one thing here,
- 8:34one thing they're killed killed a drive when you cross the 50s
- 8:37so that means there were still some points left on the field
- 8:39there that I feel like yeah. If we can clean some things up
- 8:42you know that's going to be a little bit better.
- 8:46Looking number than I think we ended up with on Saturday.
- 8:48Yeah probably somewhere between seven and ten more points
- 8:51probably somewhere closer to 40. Like we thought it would be.
- 8:54But that that fourth and short play Early eight.
- 8:58Okay, it's often off-tackle play and I told you like if you're
- 9:03going to put Jalen Holston there I absolutely hate that play call
- 9:06for him. He does not have that sort of
- 9:09quick kick to get there if the play isn't blocked perfectly and
- 9:13like I like you've been telling me so many times.
- 9:16If certain plays aren't blocked perfectly you will lose in that
- 9:19case it wasn't in that case we lost and you know print fry who
- 9:24right there seemed very aggressive similar to the PC
- 9:27game. Did not pay off.
- 9:29Now comes back later. We have a fourth and short.
- 9:32He tends to go a little more passive and I think something me
- 9:35and you've talked about a couple times not only on here, but just
- 9:40in passing conversation. It seems like Brent ply.
- 9:44Is he looks at the data in the statistical points of what you
- 9:47should and shouldn't do. But then he consensually plays
- 9:50it by gut because there are times where you're like, oh he's
- 9:53going to go for here. He kicks the field goal.
- 9:55There are times like take the points, he goes for it.
- 9:58So it's like to me it's a, he's kind of finding his rhythm as a
- 10:03head coach of wendigo when to push and when not to push and
- 10:06right now it's kind of been a healthy balance thus far in the
- 10:09season. Yeah.
- 10:10You wouldn't call them aggressive, you wouldn't call
- 10:12him passive. It's definitely situational and
- 10:15I think it's relative to game Flow.
- 10:17I think it's relative to where we are on the scoreboard.
- 10:21I think that's the big thing that we're looking at.
- 10:25At this point is that he is, Aggressive.
- 10:29I feel like when he needs to be or when he feels like it's to
- 10:31his advantage and then plays it more statistical when it's
- 10:36something that, you know, could be advantageous to punt.
- 10:40Keep us keep the field position. When the game is a little
- 10:44tighter, when things are a little still in the balance.
- 10:46So I like the mix there so far. Most of the times that he's roll
- 10:53the dice, I would have rolled the dice, and most of the times
- 10:56when he's punted, I would have punished.
- 10:57So, Have any big problems with what I've seen on that front.
- 11:02I probably would have went I'd probably would have been a
- 11:06little more aggressive not necessarily this Saturday but
- 11:10overall then he's been so far. But again that's why he's got
- 11:14the money and I don't armchair I can be a lot more aggressive
- 11:18than he cans and because he's the one that's got to go to the
- 11:21podium and answer for it. Absolutely.
- 11:25Now the other thing I want to get your take on this from, you
- 11:28know, playing at a Collegiate level.
- 11:31Do you feel like that we played down Saturday, or did it feel
- 11:35more like a controlled? We're going to win this game?
- 11:38There's no need to press. There's no need to go
- 11:40outrageous. They aren't as good as us
- 11:42because I want to get your take on that.
- 11:47Yeah, I think the big thing for for that is that I wouldn't say
- 11:53we played down to the competition.
- 11:54I think that there were times where we were not as effective.
- 12:03As we want to be that some execution wasn't there and that
- 12:06took points off the board. I mean I you know, when you say
- 12:09play down I don't think there was one of those things where we
- 12:13got pushed around where we look like, it wasn't a Richmond game
- 12:19if we want to put it that way, from a couple years back, you
- 12:22know, we didn't, we didn't feel like we were almost out matched
- 12:26or evenly matched in that game. We definitely could do the
- 12:29things that we wanted to do. We just didn't always execute as
- 12:32Crisply as we could, or should have against the level of
- 12:35Tolerance? Absolutely.
- 12:37Well, that's kind of what I wanted to hear.
- 12:39That's kind of, was my fault with never felt like down, it
- 12:42never felt like the last couple years where there were teams you
- 12:45feel really felt better than and you felt nervous getting into
- 12:49the quarter. You felt like, from Jump Street,
- 12:51we move the ball, we got aggressive, we didn't take the
- 12:55points. The next time we took the
- 12:57points, they the defense had everything under control.
- 13:00So yeah. Alright, let's take a look.
- 13:02Look at the offense just kind of chitchat about a few things here
- 13:06and there. And then we'll look at DNA
- 13:07before we before we jump in there.
- 13:09We got a little question here from Clark I what's your
- 13:13favorite piece of memorabilia and your case behind y'all.
- 13:16All right so mine is not even hung up at the moment.
- 13:21I have she rearranged the room last week Clark I have a
- 13:27lithograph hand-drawn copy of Lane stadium in the snow.
- 13:32I Clark hit me up on Twitter. I can tell you exactly who did
- 13:36it. Was someone that lives down in
- 13:38the Southwest? Virginia area gave it to a
- 13:41friend of mine. And and that friend gave it to
- 13:44me of my birthday present this year.
- 13:45So soon, I'm hoping right about there where you see the golf
- 13:49club and the guitar, right above the VT blankie.
- 13:53That's where I'm going to try to get it.
- 13:54I've got to find the brain because it's an offered frame,
- 13:56but you see probably my favorite is going to be the the pendant
- 14:05The Shield right behind me here in the corners a little dark you
- 14:08can't see it but it's just actually sorry over here right
- 14:11here. Yes, it's yeah, that there is
- 14:15signed by Darryl Tapp himself so that's probably the the one that
- 14:19I covet the most Darryl. Tapp one of my favorite all-time
- 14:23Hokies probably easily in the top three for me and got that.
- 14:29I'm trying to remember when it was Determine what game it was
- 14:33that. It was spring game.
- 14:38I want to say 2004. Okay.
- 14:43Okay, so while we were young kids, while we were kids.
- 14:46Yeah. Oh man.
- 14:49That one. That one goes way, back.
- 14:50That one goes way back way back. Absolutely.
- 14:53I hope to have this hung up soon.
- 14:55I've also got here on my left. I've had a couple times, you see
- 14:58it? I've got the, the map of
- 15:00Virginia in a would cast with all the counties outlined in the
- 15:04BT. Crying the middle of it.
- 15:06That's probably number two favorite as well as my plethora
- 15:10of hockey game cups. So yeah, we've got quite a few
- 15:16things and actually I'm looking over here, I've got both of the
- 15:20I've got both of the beer mugs out from hardihood not now so
- 15:26it's pretty pretty sweet. Oh, all righty.
- 15:30All right, so let's Now flip it. All some question clock, we
- 15:32appreciate that. We appreciate all you guys out
- 15:34there in the chat. We see you tonight.
- 15:36Lowcountry Brian Cox Clark Robbie.
- 15:38Matt appreciate you guys listening and watching tonight.
- 15:42Let's talk about the offense for on something.
- 15:45You said last week, we needed to happen.
- 15:49Is we needed to see something go on with the wide receiver
- 15:51running? Man, did we see it from two guys
- 15:53this week? Yeah.
- 15:56Jaden blue and Christian Moss big big days for the Hokies blue
- 16:01getting in the end zone. Making a couple NFL caliber
- 16:04catches especially that one kind of down the seam between two
- 16:08Defenders, elevating making the catch, bringing it down, moving
- 16:14the chains, there and Moss. A lot of stick moving routes a
- 16:18lot of possessions Type type, type things early on in the game
- 16:22to get him going, he was really probably the standout player in
- 16:25the first quarter. When we were kind of a little
- 16:27under unsteady as we kind of got our footing, you heading into
- 16:31the second quarter. They're absolutely.
- 16:35And for blew it couldn't happen to a better individual
- 16:39everything he's went through to not only have a good game but to
- 16:42catch a touchdown pass and to just feel like kind of the
- 16:45weight because we've been here and he's been nicked and then
- 16:48he's been trying to come. Seen in play but we haven't seen
- 16:50it. Develop on the field.
- 16:52Clearly developing on the field last Saturday and then Chris
- 16:56Moss. We heard his name several times
- 16:58in the fall camp and was it one of those was it just noise at
- 17:04coaches are trying to talk somebody up and get somebody
- 17:06moving and this game we saw it and he had the one miss though,
- 17:10the Oneness on the comeback which was if he catches the ball
- 17:13the guy fell down behind him. He's probably dead to rights in
- 17:15the end zone so I'm sure they're probably going to be working on
- 17:18some come back. Drills this week, like secure
- 17:21the ball first, secure the ball. First, somebody else, what about
- 17:25Gallo getting back to the game. One type production.
- 17:28I mean he did very little against BC and I mean to say we
- 17:32win that game with him to a little production is kind of
- 17:35unbelievable and now getting him back in and it's pretty awesome.
- 17:40And yeah we kind of talked about it last week where it seemed
- 17:43like BC was big-time keying on those short flat routes to the
- 17:47tight ends. We We had it heavy in the
- 17:51rotation against ODU. They were jumping on pretty
- 17:54quick. I think just with some of the
- 17:57different Personnel. We had some different play,
- 17:59caller different play calls this week that got a little bit more
- 18:03spacing in that kind of second level of the defense.
- 18:07I think that helped Gallo get get open on a more regular
- 18:10basis. And I think that'll that'll bode
- 18:13well. We'll see it.
- 18:14We'll see if we can keep that up against West Virginia this week.
- 18:17And then it returned a Jalen Jones, man.
- 18:19I mean only one catch but that was a pretty sweet catchy made
- 18:23and looks like he's starting to get his Groove.
- 18:25I know it was later in the game but again, just get him on the
- 18:28field. Getting those reps.
- 18:30Obviously ran more than just the one Rowdy caught but the wide
- 18:34receiver room with Caleb with Gosnell, you know, with Lofton
- 18:42and now with blue and Moss, sort of making an impact, it's the
- 18:46depth of slowly. Building.
- 18:47It's taken three games to get more than three deep and I'm
- 18:51missing somebody there because Brian had the none of that was
- 18:55the six we talked about, right? We talked about in the other
- 18:58six, we talked about earlier in the season, so getting that
- 19:03there's really good. And I know, God knows becoming a
- 19:06steady Eddie God knows catching like three or four passes the
- 19:09game. I think he's went one, two,
- 19:11three but every time it's like a big first down catch and it's
- 19:15moving the ball down the field, which is Really key.
- 19:18Yeah and when we got the depth chart this week, for the West
- 19:21Virginia game, we were looking at it.
- 19:22We were like okay well this depth chart for the wide
- 19:25receivers finally looks like what we thought it was going to
- 19:27look like in Fall Camp. Right?
- 19:29We got you got blue and Smith on the outside.
- 19:32You got Lofton in the slot and then backing them up.
- 19:35You've got now, moss and Jones outside with with Gosnell on the
- 19:41slot. It's kind of what we thought
- 19:43this was going to look like from Jump Street and you know,
- 19:45heading into a big game like Like West Virginia, that's kind
- 19:48of, you know, a good a good Comfort note to kind of feel
- 19:51like, you know, the wide receiver room is finally
- 19:53starting to starting to take some shape here and you know,
- 19:56talk about Jalen Jones. Yeah.
- 19:58He got the catch what impressed me was that, that yak that the
- 20:03yards after the catch. And and how he runs with the
- 20:07ball in his hand, he kind of runs with purpose.
- 20:11It reminds me a lot of it. This is not a comparison in
- 20:14terms of ability with this is a As in terms of what it reminded,
- 20:18me of just seemed on the field. Anquan Boldin, right?
- 20:21Yeah. Uh, okay.
- 20:23He like Angry resentful wide receiver.
- 20:27Yeah. Possessed.
- 20:30Like don't get in the man's way. You are going to feel it.
- 20:33So yeah, again, that room is slowly developing in.
- 20:37You wish it was quicker but, you know, hopefully better now than
- 20:43ever. And now talking about never,
- 20:46let's talk about the Well, because we still saw some
- 20:49struggles. Their first question, I want to
- 20:51ask for, we get into your grades and dog house and a couple other
- 20:53things. When you saw Gwen Moore went
- 20:58down early and you saw shit come in.
- 21:00Did that shock? You and then when Silas went
- 21:02down and he came back out, give me some stuff on Bob shit
- 21:07because I mean I think they're me and you're expecting.
- 21:09Okay, here's your chance to put the other more brother in or
- 21:12potentially Chaplin. Yeah, it was interesting seeing
- 21:16Bob, stick out there, but I think we're probably at a point
- 21:20where, when we look at the the other players that could go in.
- 21:26I wonder if more and chaplain are deep enough in the Playbook,
- 21:31or comfortable enough with the Playbook.
- 21:33We're Rudolph. Feels like he can lean on them
- 21:36and extended periods. Okay?
- 21:39Or periods. Where we're not, you know, game
- 21:41game isn't fully in hand. That's my that's my thought at
- 21:45this point. As far as why they didn't get in
- 21:47but he talked about it a little bit too is that that unit still
- 21:50trying to gel when you're trying to jail you probably lean on the
- 21:54guy that's had Had the more work the more experienced shit got in
- 21:58there, held up pretty good. I've got no real major notes on
- 22:03on how he did there. I think it was a solid outing
- 22:06for him, nothing super impressive but you know
- 22:10sometimes at all an offensive lineman has to do is be
- 22:13anonymous and good thing. If you don't know the in sik and
- 22:17less, unless you were looking for him sik, was mostly
- 22:20Anonymous. So that's, that's about as good
- 22:22as he could do. I think in that type of sub n
- 22:24Roll for First, big game that might be the best.
- 22:28That's the quote of the day right there.
- 22:29That if you're an offensive, lineman remain anonymous and
- 22:32it's a thousand percent. Correct.
- 22:34Because if you don't know the name essentially, nobody's
- 22:36getting hit and nothing's getting blown up and sometimes
- 22:40that's all you need to win football games, right?
- 22:42I mean and you kind of mentioned it in Lebron was alluding to was
- 22:46coach prize comment after the game of, somebody asked him
- 22:49might have been any better like you know why didn't the younger
- 22:51guys play? And he's like, you know, Joe
- 22:53Rudolph. Big thing is getting this first.
- 22:55Unit to gel together and it's not happened yet.
- 22:58And the question is, let me ask you, this is, does it come a
- 23:03point in time where if they aren't gelling?
- 23:07Rudolph makes a move where it's like, okay, I've got to figure
- 23:11out why we're not gelling and I've got to move someone out.
- 23:16Yeah, I think he's going to get to that point.
- 23:18I don't think he wants to. I think he knows that in terms
- 23:21of ability, these are his best five at the positions that
- 23:25they're Playing. But at some point, if it's not
- 23:29working you got to, you got to do some mix and match and I
- 23:31don't think we're at that point yet.
- 23:34But okay, you know, I think we're getting to a point where
- 23:38if we don't see some progress the next couple weeks, then
- 23:41that's going to be probably where he starts making some
- 23:44moves. But I mean, the grade for this
- 23:47week is honestly a day, communication is still a big
- 23:51problem for this unit. I don't think they necessarily
- 23:55The Sara Lee impose, their will against a team that has subpart
- 23:59talent and some of that was because of missed assignments
- 24:03miscommunication with assignments miscommunication
- 24:07with blitz pickups, you know, on that fourth down.
- 24:10I don't know whose responsibility was because I
- 24:12don't have the play call, but it looked to me like Silas and
- 24:16Jesse blocked the same Defender and there, and there wasn't that
- 24:20that's not a situation where they're working to the next
- 24:22level. Those are going to be cut off
- 24:26blocks. It's a backside play.
- 24:28There's not going to be anything too, intricate there.
- 24:31They should be blocking the same down linemen and letting one go
- 24:35completely free into the backfield.
- 24:38The only other option there is maybe that was drinks guy, but
- 24:41Drake had a cut-off on a guy that was the outside linebacker.
- 24:43So it looked like that was probably some sort of
- 24:47miscommunication on the offensive line part there and we
- 24:50saw that a lot throughout the game.
- 24:52There was, there was some sometimes stuff on the inside
- 24:54where I should have been working to the next level and kind of
- 24:56just hung around on a combo block.
- 25:00These are things that take plays that could be, you know, five to
- 25:04six yard gainers, 8-yard gainers and turn them into one or two.
- 25:08And that's the big problem we've had is it still on those early
- 25:10Downs, were not productive enough where we're giving the
- 25:13offense a chance to be in those second and manageable and third
- 25:17and short situations consistently enough even against
- 25:20a sub Park opponent like Wofford.
- 25:23All right, and And Brawn, I think we probably can.
- 25:27All guess who's in the dog house this week but go ahead.
- 25:29Tell us who's in the dog house this week.
- 25:32We're putting Parker Clements in the in the dog house this week.
- 25:36Not a good day. Overall run blocking and pass
- 25:38blocking. I was looking at PFF grades
- 25:46somehow. Grant Wells has a higher PFF
- 25:48grade in pass Pro. Then Parker Clements Not good.
- 25:56Not great. Bob migrated.
- 25:57All right, let's move off the offensive line and you know,
- 26:03hopefully that is improved this week because I think it has to
- 26:06be and let's talk about quarterback, play in general and
- 26:11let's talk about, you know, Grant Wells obviously definitely
- 26:15his best game is a hokey maybe one of his better games as a
- 26:18college quarterback, you know, over 300 314 in the air. 74
- 26:23percent complete. Ian percentage two touchdowns no
- 26:26picks and kind of looking you text.
- 26:31What did you text me about what you saw him doing?
- 26:37It was going through his progressions.
- 26:38Got better. That's it.
- 26:39Sorry, we pray for your good. Yeah, he was going through
- 26:43progressions, a lot better this week in the.
- 26:46Again some of that can be chalked up to a step down in
- 26:50competition level, but it still was his most consistent Day by
- 26:55far. I'll take seventy four percent
- 26:57completion, all day, every day, especially since there's only a
- 27:02couple out there that were truly badly thrown Balls by him.
- 27:07Yeah, and only one really bowl. That was kind of put In Harm's
- 27:11Way the whole day. So that was early with it, that
- 27:15cover to ball. He kind of tried to fit in.
- 27:18I don't think it was caught but it was it was one of those you
- 27:21go. Oh no.
- 27:23Okay yep. Yep.
- 27:26He left it a little bit lower than you wanted to little bit
- 27:31lower. Maybe put a little bit more air
- 27:34on it. Get it.
- 27:34Get a little bit closer to the sideline a little bit.
- 27:37Deeper. Yep.
- 27:37Yeah, so it was close but that was the really only close call
- 27:42all day and I think you took care of the football well and he
- 27:48saw the feel a little bit better.
- 27:50He still occasionally will stare down, his primary route, kind of
- 27:53out the gate of the snap and that's something that I think he
- 27:55needs to work on but You know, I give him a solid b-plus on the
- 28:02day, you know, not a whole lot of big critiques for him.
- 28:08I know a couple couple folks were killing him on the timeline
- 28:11but I mean these are things that we're going to have to kind of
- 28:16massage as we go throughout the year.
- 28:18You have to live with it. It's what it is.
- 28:21You have to live with what he is and I mean I know Jason Brown
- 28:24did get some run near the end of the game which to me is good.
- 28:27Getting the backup quarterback involved just in live game
- 28:31action. Where you has rough sea?
- 28:33Made a few throw pillows, it's good to have on tape.
- 28:36It's good to talk to. So I was very glad to see that.
- 28:39Now one room that you know, I don't know if you put this on
- 28:42the offensive line with the running back, room did not have
- 28:45a good day. Three point.
- 28:47Three yards a carry. We didn't have King, which me,
- 28:49and you've already looted. Tube that's fine.
- 28:54David Halston had an okay day chance flag.
- 28:56Probably probably, maybe the worst.
- 28:58He's looked this year. Maybe trying to, maybe he was
- 29:02one of the guys that was trying to press to improve trust.
- 29:06Press to impress, the coaching staff and you know, but lo and
- 29:13behold we think it's man, this is what I running back room is
- 29:18you know, Christ you comes out in the Can have and I know that
- 29:21that time game was in hand we had warned them down a little
- 29:24bit but you what was your take on Bryce?
- 29:28Do today Ryan, I mean I think you had a good day.
- 29:32We showed Some solid Vision, good burst in the hole.
- 29:38My thing was that he ran through contact to finish the run.
- 29:41That that's a big thing for me. So he showed that and then
- 29:45obviously you showed his ability in the passing game with that
- 29:48wheel route that he took for a touchdown.
- 29:50Wells, put it right right in the basket there.
- 29:53And you know, made a big catch, you know, not quite full
- 29:58extension but you know had his arms out, cradled it in there,
- 30:02took it to the house, I like that.
- 30:06When we look at King being out, we knew that there was going to
- 30:08be probably be some sort of step back in terms of production
- 30:13level from this room on the day. And we got that And I think, you
- 30:19know Holston at this point I mean, I know he's been banged up
- 30:24but more or less, he is what he is.
- 30:26And he's a guy that's going to be able to get you some some
- 30:29hard running yards but he's not going to break a bunch of big
- 30:32plays. He's just not that type of back
- 30:36and I think you were right when you talked about chance black
- 30:39pressing a little bit. I think there were times where
- 30:42you know, a little bit more patience, maybe would have paid
- 30:45off for him. But I think he was trying to one
- 30:50of those were hit the home run to early in the in the snap and
- 30:55you ended up blocks, didn't develop things weren't there and
- 30:59now you're getting to one or two yard gain instead of you know
- 31:02what could potentially been a modest.
- 31:03But solid gain when you're trying to hit the hole hard and
- 31:07break to the second level too quick.
- 31:09Absolutely, the one thing about due to, I know you talked about
- 31:12running through contact, obviously showing his hands has
- 31:15when he saw it, he went When he saw the lane, he went there was
- 31:21and that I know you talked about the vision you've got to have
- 31:24good Vision, but even there some guys that have really good
- 31:26Vision that essentially tend to wait and they're trying to make
- 31:30the perfect whole happen in his case.
- 31:33I know one was like a five yard run and it was like going to the
- 31:36left side of the line and he saw it and just cut it in and got
- 31:39four. And like you said, he ran
- 31:40through the contact to me that decision, making right to me as
- 31:45a running back, having the great vision but Guys who decide to
- 31:48say, I'm cutting it right here, I'm going to hit the hole and I
- 31:52go back, and I think the Jalen Holston run, we pointed out at
- 31:55BC, where that left side of line had it sealed and he was kind of
- 31:59waiting there. The linebackers coming in the
- 32:02whole meet him because he doesn't tackle you and you get
- 32:06through him. There's a lot of green are in
- 32:08front of units that decision-making saying, I've got
- 32:10to go now and again, when you see a guy have it that that kind
- 32:15of gets you pumped up. All right, let's flip over to
- 32:18defense for a couple minutes here and let's just talk about
- 32:22it. I mean they held offered under
- 32:25200 yards but it seemed very unspectacular.
- 32:28It wasn't like, you know, man. Of amount of sex.
- 32:32We had a significant amount of tackles for losses, but I think
- 32:37something we noticed is we saw very heavy rotation of a lot of
- 32:45different players throughout the game.
- 32:47Not just at the end when it was primary, just younger guys.
- 32:51All throughout the game. There were times where Keyshawn
- 32:54artist played like three Series in a row and we didn't see Dax
- 32:57at all. Yeah, there were long periods of
- 33:00the, the second line being in the game throughout throughout
- 33:04the game. It wasn't just, as you said,
- 33:06sprinkled into the third or fourth quarter.
- 33:08When the game was in hand, we saw a heavy rotation and that's
- 33:13taking to account that we had to starting defensive lineman
- 33:16already out. So we were already a little bit
- 33:17into the depth chart by default there but we saw, you know, DJ
- 33:23Harvey get a lot of run this week even more.
- 33:26So than last week we saw A lot more Bri on Murray on the field
- 33:32than we saw the last week and we saw those safeties.
- 33:37And in Sam backers, get irritated a lot more to.
- 33:42So we there was a heavy dose. We saw, you know, Lawson got in
- 33:45there, we saw a lot more Keller this week.
- 33:49It was a it was a really heavy rotation across the board and,
- 33:53you know, you say 200 yards under 200, but it was very
- 33:57unspectacular, there were first down here, first down there,
- 34:02then they punt. First out there wasn't a ton of
- 34:04three announce it wasn't a ton of like abject domination.
- 34:09Yeah, we're you know, pushing them into it like several, you
- 34:12know, third and 15 in longer situations.
- 34:16It was very much, a two yards, three Yards.
- 34:20No yards punt. You know, first down three
- 34:24yards, three yards, no yards. Like there were a lot of those
- 34:27type of drives where they get a get a first down here, get a few
- 34:32yards and they punt it back to us.
- 34:35So and I think some of that was by Design, not necessarily just
- 34:38because we had some of the younger guys in or guys that are
- 34:43less experienced. But I think some of that had to
- 34:45do with how we were playing them and Anjali, how we were playing
- 34:50them in preparation for what we're about to see this week?
- 34:53Yeah, I was going to ask you that.
- 34:55Let's look at defensive back room.
- 34:56Real quick. We allowed 70% completions,
- 35:00including DJ hard. Let a big one.
- 35:02Go downfield. But when you looked at the tape,
- 35:05how are we playing? Because it felt to me, we were
- 35:09playing off a ton and we weren't pressing any, it was a lot more
- 35:12read, react this week and a lot less blitzing.
- 35:16I mean, we talked about it last week.
- 35:17This is more of a West Coast type spread very similar to what
- 35:22they're going to be doing with the air raid with with West
- 35:24Virginia, which we're going to preview here in a little bit.
- 35:27I think they were kind of getting them set up for that.
- 35:30More of a read, react type, secondary approach, you know,
- 35:35there's not going to be a ton of getting in these guys faces and
- 35:39pressing them at the line of scrimmage.
- 35:43We look at West Virginia and I think some of that was by Design
- 35:47getting guys out there getting them comfortable with those
- 35:51looks because it is a little bit of a different approach that.
- 35:54I think what we would like to do against a more typical, you
- 35:58know, spread offense got it now but because of that I think we
- 36:03saw it again and in every every week we keep talking about it.
- 36:07Brian do. The tackle informed looked
- 36:09better this week than it has all year and it's been significantly
- 36:14improved all year, but it seemed like rapping and getting guys.
- 36:18Down quick. There were no chances for them
- 36:21to go any further than where ever, they caught the ball.
- 36:25Yeah, that's going to be key with that read and react.
- 36:27You've got to be able to come up and make the tackle in the open
- 36:29field, and we did that consistently.
- 36:31We didn't give them a ton of extra yardage.
- 36:34You after they made the catch, that's going to be key going
- 36:38forward. And hopefully, we can keep that
- 36:40type of play up heading into West Virginia this week.
- 36:44Yeah. Now let's talk about defensive
- 36:46line because obviously we were down a couple and when that
- 36:51happens, there are some guys who stepped up in the two biggest or
- 36:55without towel on garbage, CJ, McRae and Cole Nelson.
- 36:59Really took a big step up into a point where I think defensive
- 37:04line again, much like the wide receiver room is slowly.
- 37:07As we start playing more games slowly, starting to make itself
- 37:12deep vs. These are Still the only two
- 37:15good guys to play. Both guys had a sack.
- 37:18Both eyes were getting after the quarterback and it's great to
- 37:21see that. Yeah.
- 37:23And you know, I'm going to revise some of what I said at
- 37:25the start of the season. I was concerned about this
- 37:27defensive line to start the year.
- 37:30Yeah. From a deaf perspective
- 37:32especially d-tackle with really only having three proving guys,
- 37:35you know, we talked last week about Pinette coming in and
- 37:37getting, you know, so many efficient snaps and kind of
- 37:40closing that distance between his play last year versus what
- 37:44he's doing this year. You know, we've seen Cole
- 37:46Nelson. Now Step Up CJ McRae coming on
- 37:49the scene is going to be huge. He had some good plays against
- 37:56gets BC, we saw some more a lot more this week with him, getting
- 38:00kind of a steady rotation in that in that defensive line
- 38:05room. So if we can continue to to make
- 38:10these strides on the defense of wine that's going to help us.
- 38:14Because as we were talking about, you know, when you can't
- 38:18bring the pressure like you want to get certain types of Defense
- 38:21certain types of offensive attacks.
- 38:23Getting pressure with four is going to be key.
- 38:25Mario, Kendricks had a good game, he was living in the
- 38:27backfield. So if we can get more of these
- 38:30guys were, we can get pressure with for more consistently.
- 38:33That's only going to be better down the road and we won't have
- 38:36to necessarily worry about whether we're playing a certain
- 38:40type of offense or not. Absolutely.
- 38:42And then with those guys taking those steps now that, you know,
- 38:45Kendricks and Pinette of kind of entrenched behind fuga and
- 38:49Pollard, you got for their and with McRae and Kendrick.
- 38:52Along with garbett and Jalen Griffin.
- 38:56He's not been spectacular, but he's been very steady at the
- 38:59other end position. It's like, okay we are now we've
- 39:03sort of got a little more depth with where you feel comfortable
- 39:06rotating guys in and out to say, hey, this is your series, go out
- 39:10there and do it. And, you know, it's kind of
- 39:13funny, there's something around a lunch pail.
- 39:14It's like Casey Price. He's getting his yard dogs
- 39:17ready. And hopefully he can get them
- 39:19Feast on Thursday night. All right.
- 39:22One. I'm scary play as of hokey fan
- 39:26on Saturday and it was late in the game.
- 39:29We were punning, we had punted deep there.
- 39:32Guy attempts to make a return and Shamari Connor is on special
- 39:35teams as a gunner. And he absolutely lays the wood
- 39:40to that punt return. And we're like, yeah, heck of a
- 39:44hit, you know, I'm, we're all jacked up.
- 39:46It feels like the old days and you come back and you see the
- 39:50ref with the headset on looking at the damn video and you're
- 39:52like, oh no, you did that go mother.
- 39:57Yeah, we were big-time concerned especially with what we got, you
- 40:01know, coming into Blacksburg on Thursday.
- 40:04You know, we don't want a guy like Connor out for a for a
- 40:06half. Because of some bullshit call
- 40:09like that, thankfully targeting was reviewed, no targeting.
- 40:16I was definitely on the edge of my seat.
- 40:18That holds I was like, come on, let's go.
- 40:20We can't we can't lose this guy. But I mean they were talking
- 40:24about on the live broadcast you know, that he did weeks, the
- 40:28tweaks to the rules. Yeah.
- 40:31And you know now it's literally top portion of the helmet.
- 40:36This It's no longer just, you know, anything above the
- 40:41facemask, huh? So I think that definitely
- 40:45played in our in our favor, their thanks.
- 40:47So as much as the rule still needs to be fixed some because
- 40:51as much as they've overstepped the boundaries for targeting,
- 40:54they started bringing it back in because if you saw the hit and
- 40:58you put it up there, Matt Jones, who was in The End Zone, saw it.
- 41:01He, it was shoulder and the reason it got that look like it
- 41:04was a targeting those. Because literally the way the
- 41:06guy moved once Jim. All right, pop, It literally
- 41:10didn't look like the head hit. So, you know again, we held our
- 41:14breaths, we got through it but that they still need to make it
- 41:19more. You can't punish a guy I think
- 41:22me and you I think you said a couple times.
- 41:24It's almost like the first ones just to penalty 15 yards.
- 41:30The next one's an ejection. It's like it needs to be
- 41:32layered. You can't just continue your out
- 41:35a quarter for one you've made 12.
- 41:37Perfect hits today. 12. Perfect kids.
- 41:40Oh, this one's going to get you done for the next half of the
- 41:43next games. Well, my problem is that they
- 41:46don't take into account. The aiming point of the
- 41:48defender, true true. Because the aiming point was
- 41:52that the chest and then you see the offensive player, the guy
- 41:57with the ball is reacting to the hit coming and now all of a
- 42:00sudden you got helmet-to-helmet contact.
- 42:02The aiming Point needs to be taken to account if you're
- 42:04launching and you're leading with your head high from the
- 42:07get-go. Lutely call that a targeting.
- 42:11We need to that type of play, out of the game.
- 42:12That's fine. But if an Aiming point is that
- 42:15the breastplate of the guy with the ball are down.
- 42:19All the signs are there. You know, he's ducking down and
- 42:22getting in defensive position to take the hit and now all of a
- 42:26sudden, you know, it's a helmet to helmet or something like that
- 42:29then, Yeah, I mean that has to be taken to account.
- 42:33That's the modification that I'd like to see to that rule.
- 42:37Abso-freaking-lutely? All right, so let's put a bow on
- 42:40it, Wofford weeks over twenty, seven, seven win.
- 42:44And let's flip over to just take a look at some, some using
- 42:48college football notes Here in the first one brine for me and
- 42:52you, and probably all the folks in the chat and watching live a
- 42:57relief, the national championship will kick it. 7:30,
- 43:00this Year versus 8:30, still a Monday night, which sucks.
- 43:05But at least we're getting the bed by 11:00 then the stupidest
- 43:08thing. Let's kick it at 8:38.
- 43:09And I are you kidding me? Why our apologies to Grayson
- 43:15wimbush out there? The on the west coast, he can
- 43:18take the creation, can take a half day and had, well, this
- 43:22year, we actually can go to it. Yeah.
- 43:24Because if the sub far this year, so Grayson exactly by
- 43:27taking whoever's in it and go Heckle the fan bases there.
- 43:30So I love them. It's for us that our fans that
- 43:34watch legitimately from Labor Day weekend, Labor Day, Thursday
- 43:38night, until the national championship game regardless.
- 43:41Who's playing you just you just rewarded us instead of punishing
- 43:46us. It's a huge day after the night.
- 43:49It's a reward for 80% of the college football watching
- 43:53populist 85. There's not that many out there.
- 44:00All right, I'm including, I'm including the Mountain Time Zone
- 44:04in the Mountain Time Zone. It's two hours. 5:30 that's
- 44:10pushing it, man. It's five.
- 44:11Thirty. Thirty minutes early.
- 44:14Go grab your dinner. That is the upside.
- 44:17You get two happy hours, five o'clock, somewhere, and get your
- 44:19ass on the bar and watch the game.
- 44:21All right, the official move acc's.
- 44:24Officially moving to Charlotte. Like should have happened two
- 44:29decades ago, probably not in 2022.
- 44:33But finally done. I mean seriously like
- 44:37Charlotte's one of the biggest growing hubs.
- 44:41So I mean sure Joe has been up and coming for a while, it me is
- 44:46one of the Premier East Coast cities.
- 44:49Now it is one of the biggest banking institutions and
- 44:52everything, so making the move there made perfect sense.
- 44:55It's where they do media day. I mean we're going to do media
- 44:59day down here but we're located up here and it's just like that
- 45:03makes zero sense. So, you know, good for the
- 45:07conference. Hopefully, it shows that they're
- 45:09trying to take some things seriously and keep the
- 45:12conference alive. Maybe third gives you better
- 45:16than that. Move moving alone is not going
- 45:18to do it. I'm just saying.
- 45:21All right, third piece of news here.
- 45:23This is pretty cool for us, especially Lee since you know,
- 45:28me and you've known the family pretty much since we were kids,
- 45:32Mackenzie Lauder Hokies catcher last year on the Super Regional,
- 45:38team has joined the BT softball team as a student coach.
- 45:43I know her her dad, and her mom and her whole family or super
- 45:48ecstatic for her to continue to stay up there and do something
- 45:51she loves man. Yeah, I mean that's going to
- 45:54that's big for that family. I mean, that's a, that's a
- 45:57softball family. That's a coach.
- 45:58They are it just? It goes hand-in-hand man.
- 46:08Who had a deal with us in high school and it's classes.
- 46:12Yes, he did. Hey, but hey, it was good.
- 46:17Algebra teacher for me, I got like a b-plus and I was not good
- 46:20at math, at that point in time. All right, bra before we get
- 46:25into Know, The Enemy West Virginia.
- 46:28Let's take a quick pause for a message from our digital

- 46:50forward slash free Dash. Website Dash report now back to
- 46:54the episode. All right, Brian well, let's get
- 46:57to it. No, the enemy West Virginia and
- 47:00let's just start right out the gate here, Braun, and let's
- 47:03start with the quarterback because he is the biggest name
- 47:05in this game and that is JT Daniels.
- 47:08The 6226 quarterback from maitre, d, high school, I'm in
- 47:14California in 2018. He was a five star QB.
- 47:18He was the number two QB in the country.
- 47:20A top-20 player. He transferred from USC where he
- 47:24originally committed to Georgia when he lost his job to Spencer.
- 47:28Spencer. Last year, transferred again to
- 47:32West Virginia. Now this year, you know, a lot
- 47:35of them written in knowing about him but just kind of doing a
- 47:38quick view on him from the first few games this year.
- 47:41I mean, is it still? Is it still there?
- 47:46I mean he still saw the quarterback, he gets the ball
- 47:49out really quick especially on early throwing Downs, accurate.
- 47:52In the short intermediate game probably could see improvements
- 47:56in his deep Ball, but he can still make all the throws.
- 48:00But his biggest thing is Poison the pocket.
- 48:02He doesn't really panic when things don't look good, or when
- 48:05the pocket pocket collapses around him.
- 48:07He does a good job is still getting the ball out but
- 48:10sometimes that's to his detriment.
- 48:11He hangs on in the pocket there when the pressures coming and
- 48:15dangerously. So He had a couple balls when we
- 48:18were looking at the, the pit game where, you know, guys are
- 48:24hitting his arm as he's throwing the ball, and he had 44 times,
- 48:29that is his hand got hit as he was throwing the ball.
- 48:32None resulted in a turnover or an interception or anything like
- 48:36that in two of them were completions.
- 48:39So, you know, does the Luck run out for him in this case?
- 48:43You know, if we can get some pressure on him will see. he,
- 48:46but he does do a good job of hanging in there and delivering
- 48:51Yeah, absolutely. I know he threw the pick six in
- 48:55the pit game, which was I mean, he I remember watching that
- 48:59game, he telegraphed that pass and when pit the pit Corner saw,
- 49:04he jumped that route and housed in essentially.
- 49:06That was the game. But you know, so far this year
- 49:09and he's put up some pretty good statistical data.
- 49:12You know, complete 64 percent of his passes.
- 49:14He's got over 750 yards already in three games 66.
- 49:20Touchdown only two interceptions, never been a real
- 49:23threat to run at all and he's not really that athletic of a
- 49:28guy but you know, overall he is who he is, that 64%, he's at 63
- 49:348 for his entire career, he's got it close to 6,000, you know,
- 49:37over 5,500 is uni passing yards. So he is a good player on this
- 49:43team and I tell you what the guy, he's throwing to primarily
- 49:48his favorite Target. Price forward Whedon that wide
- 49:52receiver 63 220 for also 2018 class.
- 49:57North Carolina got played down in Holly Springs down in, Fuquay
- 50:00Varina, probably a lot of folks listening here tonight, probably
- 50:04familiar with that area. Look them up no offer from Tech
- 50:08when he came out. And you know, so far this year
- 50:12he is been kind of tearing it up.
- 50:14You know, almost 300 yards, through three games for
- 50:19touchdown. Owns averaging.
- 50:21Just a little over 12 yards per catch.
- 50:24What's the tape tell you about this big body guy?
- 50:28Yeah, he's probably the best all-around light out we've seen
- 50:30so far this year, you know, I li Jennings and they flowers did
- 50:35some some really good stuff but this is more of a prototypical
- 50:39NFL level type receiver, great blend of size and speed and he's
- 50:47a great route Runner. He's got good hands.
- 50:51High Point skills are off the charts.
- 50:54He'll he's really good at High Point in the ball but he will
- 50:57you will have a drop every now and again.
- 50:58So there's some opportunity there where, you know, key third
- 51:02down could potentially get, you know, drop one that gives us the
- 51:05ball back and I have seen him occasionally disappear for
- 51:10stretches in the game. But when he's out when he's
- 51:13feeling it, when he's in the zone, he's as good as as anyone
- 51:17you can really watch on tape. He's they use that NFL typed.
- 51:20Talent. Nice.
- 51:21Anybody else in the wide receiver room, catch your eyes
- 51:24that we need to kind of keep an eye on this week.
- 51:27Yeah, the guy opposite him. Caden praise.
- 51:29There's also someone, I would, I would watch both of these guys
- 51:32are big, body NFL type receivers, you know, you talked
- 51:36about, you know, Ford weed and 63 220 for appraisers, 64 211,
- 51:44and both of these guys are quick there.
- 51:47These are not just stick mover in Me a big, big body receivers.
- 51:51They have the quickness to beat you deep.
- 51:54They had the quickness to move, kind of underneath the coverage
- 51:57and get open and get some run after the catch as well.
- 52:00Yeah. And you mentioned Prather, you
- 52:01know, 64 210. So again, you say, big body,
- 52:06definitely, big body. Not quite the statistics that
- 52:12Ford Whedon has, you know, right at 200 yards, right out of 11
- 52:16per catch but still you see those scores and numbers.
- 52:20And it's like, he said, if he's opposite, he's probably
- 52:22definitely going to be getting the looks this week.
- 52:25Now, we're gonna look at the running back room next and, you
- 52:27know, as we were kind of decide who to look at, you know, Tony
- 52:31math is just had a big game against Houston last week, but
- 52:35the guy that's really called. Our guy, our caught our eye is
- 52:38CJ Donelson the halfback tight, end, whatever you want to call
- 52:42them 62 240. He's from Miami Florida, he is a
- 52:46true freshman. He was a three star in the 2022.
- 52:50Yes. And, you know so far this year,
- 52:53he's averaging almost nine and a half yards per touch.
- 52:58What's the tape telling on him run?
- 53:00Yeah, I mean, he's the guy that's listed as a tight end but
- 53:03he primarily lines up in the backfield.
- 53:05He's he's a tree running back. He reminds me of kind of a
- 53:10trimmer quicker. Brandon Jacobs.
- 53:13Okay he runs the ball. All right, you kind of kind of
- 53:17upright running Style. Isle big guy can can Barrel you
- 53:23over, but he also is he's quick enough at the second level where
- 53:28he can hit some big runs. He had a couple big runs against
- 53:30Pitt. I think one, especially early on
- 53:33in that game that I think set up their first score there.
- 53:36And, you know, you had a couple Red Zone, touchdowns against
- 53:40Kansas, and then another one again, spits.
- 53:42Oh, he's really effective, inside the red zone as well.
- 53:45So that's somebody that we need to keep an eye on because they
- 53:49don't run the Malt ball very much so but when they do, it's
- 53:54usually usually pretty effective and especially with with CJ
- 53:57Donaldson here. Yeah, and you mentioned a
- 54:00touchdown, he's got six total for the year already and we're
- 54:03in game, three on. Did you notice anything like
- 54:06with past Pro? Is that a another reason they
- 54:08are putting him back there. See, a better pass protector for
- 54:12when it's those are eight shot times when they're going
- 54:14downfield. He is showing the propensity to
- 54:18be a good blocker early, but he's still, I think learning the
- 54:22offense a little bit. He's definitely, more of kind of
- 54:24a package guy. Used them pretty heavily against
- 54:27Towson, but they used in more in packages against Pitt in Kansas,
- 54:34okay? Got it.
- 54:37And, you know, it's kind of shows only two receptions for 10
- 54:39yards this year as well. So not exactly, you know,
- 54:43lighting the world on fire as a tight end but definitely doing a
- 54:46lot of damage. Like I said, not and a half
- 54:49yards, a carry just under 300 yards for the season so
- 54:54definitely got, we've got to keep an eye on now.
- 54:57Ryan, let's go ahead and talk about the offensive line where a
- 55:03known face to just about everyone and Hokie Nation a
- 55:06Actually two very well-known, guys, the former hokey Doug
- 55:08Nestor and the guy that everybody felt like was coming
- 55:12to Blacksburg as one of the top prospects on the offensive line.
- 55:17Why am I alone? What has the offensive line
- 55:22looked like with sort of the switch over to the air raid?
- 55:27They look pretty good that they're still not an elite off
- 55:29of the line, but they look pretty good.
- 55:32I would, let's talk about my land first.
- 55:35He's probably their best overall lineman at this point.
- 55:38He's playing left tackle for them, he's good in the Run game
- 55:41in the past game, but he's also a guy kind of similar to Brock
- 55:46Hoffman. He's gonna, he's gonna get some
- 55:49penalties, he had a couple procedure penalties, against
- 55:52Pitt, had a personal foul call against Pitt.
- 55:55It had a couple other penalties since then so he gets penalized
- 56:00pretty heavily more so than you would think for an offensive,
- 56:05lineman of his caliber of play. So that's something.
- 56:09We might be able to take advantage of as the game goes
- 56:11along they move Nestor out to right tackle.
- 56:14Now he's probably their best overall run blocker, but he
- 56:17still like he was when he was a hokey kind of kind of mid and
- 56:21past Pro, right? But but but when they like to
- 56:24run they like to run his Direction.
- 56:25Action. He does a good job in the Run
- 56:27game and then you got your name. You haven't mentioned Zach,
- 56:30Fraser, the center number 54. He's kind of the opposite of
- 56:34Nestor. He's really good in the past
- 56:36Pro, but he kind of gets pushed back a little bit in the Run
- 56:39game. All right, have you seen that?
- 56:42I mean, I know it was a few plays during the pit game that
- 56:47clearly the line broke down. I mean, are they like a roller
- 56:51coaster ride? Where sometimes they're doing
- 56:53great. And then, all of a sudden,
- 56:56three, four, five, six plays in a row.
- 56:57They just look like dog crap. Yeah me they never were able to
- 57:02really assert themselves against Pitt in the running game.
- 57:06They had again a couple big runs and then they finished pretty
- 57:10well in the Red Zone but they didn't do a whole lot kind of
- 57:14between the 20s short of those couple couple big runs by
- 57:19Donaldson. So if we can keep them behind
- 57:22the sticks, that's probably going to be the most effective
- 57:24way to negate what they can do there in the Run game.
- 57:28All right, well, let's kind of talk about this offense.
- 57:30We've met And it four or five times, this is clearly an Air
- 57:33Raid Offense, something that you know how money back at Valdosta
- 57:37State in the 90s came up with and then Mike Leach brought to
- 57:41the Forefront of Texas Tech in the early 2000's.
- 57:43In one of his very first quarterbacks is their offensive
- 57:46coordinator, which is Graham. Harrell kind of give us a
- 57:50breakdown of some, of the stuff we normally see narrate and they
- 57:53do anything a little bit different.
- 57:57Yeah. I mean it's a fairly
- 57:59prototypical are a, but they do have a little bit more of a run
- 58:03emphasis than your traditional air raid.
- 58:07They like to employ Tempo, especially when they connect on
- 58:10a good run or pass on some of those early Downs, they'll get
- 58:12going back to the line of scrimmage.
- 58:14They're hurrying up there trying to get the next play out there.
- 58:17Trying to keep you on your toes. Keep you from being on the sub
- 58:21and then working those mismatches you know contrary to
- 58:25last year though they're not a eight running team but they can
- 58:28be effective when they hit a home run.
- 58:31You know we saw Donaldson hit a couple long runs against Pitt.
- 58:36We've seen math is get one or two here there especially last
- 58:39week against Towson so they can still hit that, but there's no
- 58:43Levi Brown out there this year, so don't expect to get
- 58:46completely gashed. Like we did last year when we
- 58:50played West Virginia in Morgantown, The rush is kind of
- 58:55used as a drive starter not really used as a drive started.
- 58:59You know, sometimes it is, sometimes, it's not, but it's
- 59:01more used as a change of pace from kind of that quick hitting
- 59:04pass game that's, you know, prevalent in the air raid.
- 59:10Got it. How much do they push it down
- 59:16for you because you have so many Air Raids where the push down
- 59:20field is almost like an old school.
- 59:24An old-school NFL philosophy where it's we're only going to
- 59:28take about two or three shots in a half.
- 59:32And then you kind of when I say that is because they're playing
- 59:35primitive, all right? You look at it tunnels and
- 59:37Bubbles and quick outs. Getting the ball out quick.
- 59:40Do they have a tendency to go deep alive or is it more of
- 59:43they're trying to Papi Papi Papi for a quarter and a half?
- 59:47And then all of a sudden once you come up then over the top
- 59:49they go. Yeah they kind of suck you in
- 59:52with that and they'll work some double moves off.
- 59:54Off of that. And they, the receivers they're
- 59:56both. Again, we talked about, they're
- 59:57both big out there but they've got, they've got wiggle, they've
- 1:00:00got speed so that helps them both in the short game.
- 1:00:04And when they decide to go deep though, so they have the ability
- 1:00:07to do both but they usually stay in that short to intermediate
- 1:00:11Zone, most of the time, but they will take a shot here and there.
- 1:00:16All right, got it. So, so sort of a balanced, not
- 1:00:20your typical original Airaid, where it was just a ton of
- 1:00:23perimeters then down, Where again, we've seen it, develop
- 1:00:26where there are some teams in area Concepts that are just
- 1:00:28attacking downfield, a ton. So very good to know that you
- 1:00:33know they're not just trying to stretch you vertically and
- 1:00:36horizontally they will stretch you vertically as well.
- 1:00:38So yeah that's one of them to keep an eye on but they're not
- 1:00:42just taking shots downfield all game either.
- 1:00:45Absolutely. Now Brian let's let's flip over
- 1:00:50to the defense here in just a second but there's a comment.
- 1:00:52I want you to throw up out there from our coach Rob like Compton
- 1:00:59talking about that. If you give the space if you
- 1:01:01press they, burp goes back to what we saw.
- 1:01:03Right against Wofford why we playing off.
- 1:01:07There it is, right there. All right.
- 1:01:10But now let's flip over to the defense and let's talk about the
- 1:01:13guy who probably should be playing in the NFL, right?
- 1:01:15Right now, I'm still trying to figure out why he came back for
- 1:01:17more seasons at West, Virginia. And that would be Dante Stills,
- 1:01:21the 64 285 column strong side defensive end.
- 1:01:26Call them a three technique. He is a damn good player, he was
- 1:01:30a four-star. When he came out in 2018, he was
- 1:01:33a top D top player in West Virginia that year.
- 1:01:38He was a top-10 defensive lineman, he was a top, 150
- 1:01:41overall player. He was a stud when he came out
- 1:01:44and he's lived up to it every single, basically, his entire
- 1:01:49time at West Virginia, Yeah, he's an absolute monster on that
- 1:01:55three-man front playing. That defensive tackle has a
- 1:02:00Relentless motor really quick off convert speed to strength.
- 1:02:05Really effectively they use them a lot in stunts.
- 1:02:10They'll bring them all the way across the the line of
- 1:02:12scrimmage. And he's got a spin move that
- 1:02:17for a guy. His size is as Elite as you can
- 1:02:19imagine. He's other moves are not as
- 1:02:22effective. Effective at the snap, but that
- 1:02:25motor is what really sets him apart.
- 1:02:27He keeps working keeps working. So he's a guy that if you're not
- 1:02:32staying on your block holding your leverage, he's going to
- 1:02:35eventually get to the quarterback.
- 1:02:37Yeah, I mean, he calls Havoc for them last year and in this year
- 1:02:43so far. I mean he's already at eight
- 1:02:45tackles 34 lost a couple of sacks his career numbers, 120
- 1:02:50tackles it again. This is as a plan to end on a
- 1:02:53three-man front. 120. Tackles forty seven tackles for
- 1:02:57loss in over 20 sacks. That's Ali.
- 1:03:02Again I think I think what he was projected like a second
- 1:03:05round pick last year and he came back which is just insane.
- 1:03:09Because usually you get a grade that how you go especially
- 1:03:12defensive lineman you will be taken.
- 1:03:15All right, let's talk about somebody who has to clean up
- 1:03:18what he does and that would be Lee and let me go Pogba KP o
- 1:03:24GBA, he is a Otis I try. He is a six foot one or
- 1:03:32230-pound linebacker Winston-Salem.
- 1:03:37North Carolina at Parkland. High School came out in 2019 is
- 1:03:41a three-star. He originally committed to
- 1:03:43Syracuse where he was for a couple years.
- 1:03:46Then he went to Juco route in 2021 and then transferred as a
- 1:03:50Juco to West Virginia and you know so far this season 18
- 1:03:58total. Tackles and one fumble recovery.
- 1:04:01So some solid numbers up front. What are you seeing on tape?
- 1:04:07Yeah, he's got, he's a great athlete and has good speed for
- 1:04:09the mic position. He's another kid with a great
- 1:04:13motor never gives up on the play.
- 1:04:16They'll send him on blitzes he. He's a guy that can kind of
- 1:04:21disrupt the backfield in the Run game and in the past game, but
- 1:04:25he does struggle to sometimes shed blocks in the Run game.
- 1:04:29So he does struggle from at that from time to time, so we can get
- 1:04:33up to the next level. On him.
- 1:04:35We can neutralize him a little bit.
- 1:04:37All right, so there's some key, some of those plays, we like
- 1:04:40you've been mentioning before, like he's going to be stagnant
- 1:04:44instead of going up to the next level.
- 1:04:46Let's hope we can get in his face.
- 1:04:48Alright, next, I want to talk about here is Marcus.
- 1:04:51Floyd Marcus fluid is a defensive back, he is 6 foot 194
- 1:04:56pounds Louisville. Kentucky is where he is from
- 1:04:59completely, unrelated out of high school on any service.
- 1:05:04When he came out in 2018, he started by going to An in-state
- 1:05:08Murray State. So in FCS program all hook, you
- 1:05:11should be very familiar with and then decided to transfer to West
- 1:05:15Virginia in December of 2021. Where is he lining up?
- 1:05:20Brian? What's he doing for the
- 1:05:22Mountaineers? Yes, he's a former Corner.
- 1:05:25Most of the snaps he was playing at his former stop.
- 1:05:29He was playing corner but now he's playing What's called the
- 1:05:33the cat safety in this 33 stag defense, similar to a Rover type
- 1:05:39of position, he's above average and cover and coverage
- 1:05:43especially when he can read to react versus being in man and
- 1:05:47he's a good tackler. Use them.
- 1:05:49Occasionally as a Blitzer. He does.
- 1:05:53Kind of similar to leak Pogba, he can disappear when you put a
- 1:05:57body on him. So if he gets blocked he doesn't
- 1:05:59do a good job of shedding and getting and making the play.
- 1:06:02He's at his best when he can just fly up into the spill area
- 1:06:07and make a play in The Run game. And like I said, he's above
- 1:06:11average in that that's own coverage, that reading react
- 1:06:13coverage. Did you see any sort of plays
- 1:06:17where he was left on a man? Like, if they went to some sort
- 1:06:20of cover zero recover one, where he was forced to cover a slot?
- 1:06:25He did okay but he doesn't have Elite level speed to keep up
- 1:06:30with guys and his technique is not that great.
- 1:06:35I mean, it's just average. So it's one of those things
- 1:06:38where we potentially look for a matchup, like a Dwayne Lofton or
- 1:06:42Jaden blue in that slot. If we get the right looks and
- 1:06:46maybe not going over the top, but try and some of that quick
- 1:06:49twitch type stuff where you feel like there's his skill set is
- 1:06:53not that I saw A few times and he got matched up in man where
- 1:06:58crossers were kind of plays that we could take advantage of him,
- 1:07:01okay? All right.
- 1:07:03Make a note of that right there. All right about we take a look
- 1:07:06at one more defensive player and then before we get into the
- 1:07:09defensive breakdown and that is the defensive lineman Taj
- 1:07:14Alston. Six foot four 255 pounds,
- 1:07:18another North Carolina, kid from Lumberton.
- 1:07:22North Carolina down there near Fayetteville.
- 1:07:24He attended copia Lincoln Community College out in
- 1:07:27Nebraska and then he committed to West Virginia as a three-star
- 1:07:32in 2019, so far this season as an end, he's got a tackle for
- 1:07:38loss couple forced fumbles, which is very interesting to see
- 1:07:43what's the tape showing on him in.
- 1:07:46How does he do opposite of steals?
- 1:07:50He does pretty good opposite instills especially when the
- 1:07:52quarterbacks dropping back. He is more of a pure pass
- 1:07:56rusher. He's more of the true defensive
- 1:07:58end and this type of three-man front whereas Stills is more of
- 1:08:04the balance player. But he has really good speed off
- 1:08:07the edge, but he does struggle to make plays in The Run game
- 1:08:11when you run directly at him, when you put a big body on and
- 1:08:13he can be blocked. So I imagine we run away from
- 1:08:16steals a little bit. Run at Taj Alston and tried to
- 1:08:20neutralize his pass rush as much as we can, by chipping.
- 1:08:24Yeah, and we definitely need to do that because last year,
- 1:08:27against the Hokies have four total tackles including a sack
- 1:08:31and a half in the game last year down.
- 1:08:36In Morgantown. So obviously, he's familiar with
- 1:08:39the Hokies. Obviously he's familiar with
- 1:08:42some of these offensive line we're gonna be playing now.
- 1:08:44Brian, let's flip over. Let's talk about the defense
- 1:08:46itself. You've mentioned a couple times
- 1:08:48already. This they have not changed it
- 1:08:50yet. They're still in the 33 stack.
- 1:08:52And what you've seen, especially against Pitt and Kansas this
- 1:08:55year and why those teams were able to come out and get on top
- 1:08:58of the West Virginia Mountaineers.
- 1:09:01Yeah. So they're very average against
- 1:09:03the rush attack and that's the big thing.
- 1:09:05Pit was able to establish the line of scrimmage pretty early
- 1:09:07in that game. And it kept going, you know,
- 1:09:10throughout the game where they were able to run pretty
- 1:09:12consistently against that front especially with Hammond.
- 1:09:17He haven't had a lot of success against that front there at
- 1:09:22attacking defense, as most three threes are they do a good job of
- 1:09:26blitzing design. It, you know, confusing
- 1:09:29offensive lines, with how they bring.
- 1:09:30Pressure and where they're bringing it from and they rely
- 1:09:34on that pressure as they are at best, a work in progress, on the
- 1:09:38back end. You know, when you look at that
- 1:09:41that secondary, you know, you got five key guys there and only
- 1:09:46one of them was recruited by West Virginia, out of high
- 1:09:49school, everyone else is a transfer and most of them are
- 1:09:53transferring from FCS and G5 programs.
- 1:09:57So it's really an interesting interesting defense to face
- 1:10:03because there's a lot of new faces on the backend, pretty
- 1:10:07much all new faces on the back end, compared to what we saw
- 1:10:10last year will guide in up front.
- 1:10:13You know, it's kind of the the same old song and dance with
- 1:10:16Stills. You know, coming through there
- 1:10:18and Alston so if we can hold up in the offensive line category,
- 1:10:24which is probably where we're struggling with the most overall
- 1:10:27on. All fence right now.
- 1:10:28Yeah. If we if we can hold up the you
- 1:10:30know there's some opportunities there but you know occasionally
- 1:10:34you'll see them adjust to a four-man line.
- 1:10:37They did that in the second half against Pitt when pit was
- 1:10:39big-time gash in them in the running game.
- 1:10:42The Bandit position played by Jarrett Bartlett, he ends up
- 1:10:46lined it up opposite Alston with with Stills we went down into a
- 1:10:51more 433 technique. Are you glad that we got that on
- 1:10:57tape though? Are you glad that they sort of
- 1:11:00had a show that hand early against West Virginia about if
- 1:11:03they couldn't when they, when the three-man front is getting
- 1:11:05gas there, they've got to show the foreman and we're Partners
- 1:11:08got to come down and you glad that's on tape for our coaching
- 1:11:11staff. Yeah, we saw it some last year
- 1:11:14so it's not something that we haven't seen before.
- 1:11:16But okay, it's good to see what it looks like in this current
- 1:11:21version of the defense with some of those new faces on the back
- 1:11:23end. Got you, got you got you?
- 1:11:28All right, so there is kind of a overview of both the
- 1:11:35Mountaineers offense and defense and some of the key players will
- 1:11:39be looking at to not have good games alms Thursday night.
- 1:11:43Now, let's go to the Hokies for this game and Prime as I was
- 1:11:48looking at the data and Diving and looking at one thing.
- 1:11:52Then the other, something that caught my eye is third.
- 1:11:57Conversions in on both sides of the ball because West Virginia
- 1:12:00is one of the better than the country.
- 1:12:02They are completing 54 percent of their third Downs, which is a
- 1:12:07unbelievable number. I'd love to get 44%, but as I
- 1:12:11was digging and is probably all of us, heard Saturday, Virginia
- 1:12:15Tech doesn't give up their downs and it's not one of those were
- 1:12:20in the top 20 to top 15. We're number three in the
- 1:12:24country. And the Hokies are allowing Only
- 1:12:2717% of third down conversions defensively.
- 1:12:31So in one of those games where as the high-powered offense
- 1:12:33against the, you know, high-powered defense, That's got
- 1:12:39a, it's got to break one way or the other.
- 1:12:42And is there anything you foresee?
- 1:12:43That might assist the Hokies in keeping that, you know, 17% as
- 1:12:50the norm for Thursday night. I mean I think one thing that's
- 1:12:55helped us is that we got to practice a little bit of what
- 1:12:59we're going to get against West Virginia.
- 1:13:01Against Wofford, I think we've kind of seen what we can do with
- 1:13:07that style of offense and now we've had a correction period,
- 1:13:11right? Yeah, they went out there, they
- 1:13:14corrected some of those mistakes.
- 1:13:16We got some young guys to get some reps against that, that
- 1:13:19style defense. So that's I think that's key but
- 1:13:23the Key is going to be keeping everything in front of you and
- 1:13:26tackling. Because if you don't tackle,
- 1:13:29then that third down percentage is going to go up this week.
- 1:13:33Yeah we've got is we've got to be in the right position and
- 1:13:35then when we come up we got to make the tackle and make sure
- 1:13:39that they're not getting more than a yard or two after the
- 1:13:42catch in this in this offense. Yeah, it said big piece.
- 1:13:48Another key of ours, it's the tackling in space and so much
- 1:13:51with the are a concept is where they catch the ball as where
- 1:13:55they've got a fall. If you can do that consistently,
- 1:14:00you it will frustrate an Air Raid Offense.
- 1:14:03Consistently because instead of getting the five or eight,
- 1:14:06they're getting the 224 and putting them in unfavorable down
- 1:14:11in distances as you get deeper into the into the place.
- 1:14:15And then that Means we can get into a little bit more of what
- 1:14:18we like to do with, with dialing up pressure on on those third
- 1:14:21and long situations, 10 years back and go.
- 1:14:25All right, so I said it was both sides of the balls and, you
- 1:14:29know, as bad as we are at converting, we are 90th right
- 1:14:32now in the country and that's a thirty-six percent.
- 1:14:36So basically, when I have every three, third downs, we convert
- 1:14:40the are one of the worst defensively.
- 1:14:43They're 112 out of 131 teams and they Roughly only stop team's 46
- 1:14:48percent of the time. I'm hoping that our number can
- 1:14:56come up to their mean because if you tell him he we convert close
- 1:14:58to 50% of the time on Thursday night, I will feel really good
- 1:15:03about our chances at winning this game because the less time
- 1:15:07that offenses on the field. It's the best thing for us.
- 1:15:13Yeah, the big key is going to be getting them off.
- 1:15:16The field on third down and staying on the field.
- 1:15:18On third down, lengthening this game or sorry shortening this
- 1:15:22game is going to be key for the Hokies.
- 1:15:24I think, possessing, the ball and shortening, the game is
- 1:15:28going to be key for the Hokies in terms of pulling out of w,
- 1:15:30because if they're going fast, and they're running, a bunch of
- 1:15:33plays and they're going up and down the field, they're going to
- 1:15:35get some points off those. And eventually, those points are
- 1:15:37going to not work in our favor because I don't, I don't see us
- 1:15:41as a quick straight. We're not going to be able to go
- 1:15:43out there and stack points and match them score for score.
- 1:15:46If it becomes that type of game, abso-freakin'-lutely, Brian and
- 1:15:51that's kind of where it's the next kind of, And that we've
- 1:15:58been talking about about our key is, the Hokies Run game against
- 1:16:02the West Virginia run defense. The West Virginia is in, thanks
- 1:16:07for putting that up, thanks low country, living for that.
- 1:16:10I had heard that I do think Kings going regardless, I think
- 1:16:15it's one of these. He's at 35 percent on Thursday
- 1:16:18he's going because him and 85% is probably still better than
- 1:16:22any running back. We've got and for this running
- 1:16:24game, you know, can we Open it up.
- 1:16:28They're giving up roughly about 120 a game.
- 1:16:32It's roughly about middle of the pack.
- 1:16:34It's not Elite, it's not great, but it's not god-awful, but the
- 1:16:38whole thing is what kind of Brian's been mentioned about
- 1:16:41getting that going, if we're converting third Downs to hold,
- 1:16:45you back in and slowly, but surely if we're gasps, shing
- 1:16:49gasps, shing what has to happen with that, back-end Brian.
- 1:16:53If we're Gathering them for, for 27 yards, every play.
- 1:16:58Babies are going to play up in the Box a little bit more to
- 1:17:01help stop the run, help support the run.
- 1:17:03And eventually that's going to hopefully open up some stuff on
- 1:17:05the back end. We just have to be able to in a
- 1:17:08position to take advantage of that guy.
- 1:17:09Take advantage of it. But you've already mentioned, it
- 1:17:11is a flawed back in and it kind of shows, they do give up a lot
- 1:17:16more passing yards, then rushing yards.
- 1:17:19So again, getting the Run game going and getting them to have
- 1:17:22to get into situations where they're uncomfortable on the
- 1:17:25back. End is so cute.
- 1:17:27Now our success on the back end is predicated on getting
- 1:17:29pressure on the quarterback. They are not a great back-end
- 1:17:32team. So I think that's one of those
- 1:17:35things where we talked about Gala.
- 1:17:37If you if we start getting Gallo going and him a or Drake going
- 1:17:40in the flats early and we're picking up significant that
- 1:17:44immediately is going to make the safeties.
- 1:17:47Both the probably the Bandit and probably the the Rover got to
- 1:17:52come up and if that's coming up more and more, if they're trying
- 1:17:54to come up to me, 50 the cat the cat safety is calling her over
- 1:18:00for god sakes but if they're coming up more and more than you
- 1:18:04know, Guess what? There's going to be Lanes to
- 1:18:08throw down to those crossers. We've been talking about some of
- 1:18:11our better plays this year. All right, last piece in this
- 1:18:16this is just mind-blowing to me. So West Virginia has given up
- 1:18:21100 points this year in three games.
- 1:18:24So that means they're giving up over 30 points a game.
- 1:18:28The insane part is Brian. They've given up 63 in Red Zone
- 1:18:33trips. They finished in the Red Zone 10
- 1:18:38times. They've been scored on not times
- 1:18:42called by a touchdown. I don't think that's good times.
- 1:18:51Any of my Ferris Bueller fans know the reference nine.
- 1:18:55But seriously you know right now work at we've been down there
- 1:18:59eight, we are converting 75% of the time which you know, you
- 1:19:02want more than that. But to say that, you know, we
- 1:19:07what was the thing, we just talked about in The Walker game,
- 1:19:09we didn't finish drives. This is a team that just allows
- 1:19:13teams to finish drive. That seems at will if you get
- 1:19:15inside the 20 yard line, Yeah, it's one of those when we looked
- 1:19:22at earlier with the the third down, its kind of Unstoppable,
- 1:19:27Force against an immovable object.
- 1:19:28Now you've got the reverse of that.
- 1:19:30Exactly thing that's somewhat struggling to finish drives
- 1:19:33against the team that does nothing, but let teams finish
- 1:19:36drives. So, yeah, you got the, you've
- 1:19:38got a team that does that decides to trip up and fall down
- 1:19:42in the team. That does Au Lait and gets out
- 1:19:44of the way you can go score that touchdown.
- 1:19:47So, they're kind of the keys to what we're seeing with some of
- 1:19:52the data, some of the players in Brian, we have come, you know,
- 1:19:56every week we've got to do this and we met predictions beginning
- 1:20:00of the season. And now, it's time for this game
- 1:20:02prediction. And since you left last week I
- 1:20:06do get the honor this week sir. And this one was tough me and
- 1:20:09Brian we set about 30 minutes. This afternoon had a phone call
- 1:20:14just chatting a little bit of everything about what we can go
- 1:20:16over tonight. And all the data points.
- 1:20:21Say it's going to be a good game because of the contrarians of
- 1:20:27what's going on each side of the team is going to be a good game
- 1:20:29but it seems like everything leans, West Virginia they've got
- 1:20:33a okay defense versus where and they got a really great offense
- 1:20:39where we've got a great defense statistical wise.
- 1:20:42And I often say, it's not as bad as last year y'all last year
- 1:20:45were one of the three right now, we're ranked.
- 1:20:47A third. So we've actually improved
- 1:20:50offensively this year, whether we know it or not But I kept
- 1:20:54going back to thinking it's Thursday night.
- 1:20:58It's Lane, it's a sellout Justin what's?
- 1:21:01It's going to be in Okie colored coveralls to get the chant
- 1:21:06going? And I think it's going to be one
- 1:21:09or two big plays that completely swing this game.
- 1:21:13And for all those out there, if you can take off Friday, if
- 1:21:18you're going to the game, you better take off Friday because
- 1:21:20you're not going to be any condition to work if you are
- 1:21:22working on Friday. My condition is you need to call
- 1:21:25somebody tomorrow and say you're not working because I think this
- 1:21:28is going to be a thriller to the end in my prediction.
- 1:21:32I'm going to stick with what I had at the beginning of season.
- 1:21:34I think the Hokies pull this one out, I think it's a war and I
- 1:21:37think the Hokies take it by Point Thirty One Thirty.
- 1:21:43I like your optimism and we actually have West Virginia
- 1:21:47scoring the exact same amount of points.
- 1:21:51The problem is, I got the Hokies only scoring 24 of them.
- 1:21:56I've got this as a solid game front to back.
- 1:22:03We're in at the whole way. We're slowing them down.
- 1:22:07Just enough. We give up three touchdowns.
- 1:22:09We give up three field goals. We still keep a good defensive
- 1:22:15performance overall, but we don't quite do enough and the
- 1:22:18offense doesn't quite do enough to get that W.
- 1:22:21Bronze, basically, saying the offense is not going to finish a
- 1:22:24few times. Yeah, I still I'm not fully
- 1:22:29trusting this offensive line yet and I think the communication
- 1:22:32and the way that West Virginia likes to the bring, the the
- 1:22:35Blitz and the pressure from a lot of different areas if that
- 1:22:39communication has not taken a step since Wofford, Then that's
- 1:22:44going to be problematic. And when you're trying to close
- 1:22:46the game out, Anyway, you're trying to come back.
- 1:22:50You know, down one score trying to finish out your going to be
- 1:22:53throwing the ball. There's going to be that
- 1:22:54pressure and I'm just questioning whether we can hold
- 1:22:57up. Alright, so there you go.
- 1:23:00I got 3130 VT bronze. Trying to be the realest of our
- 1:23:05group saying, 3024 say I mean it's weird Pig against each
- 1:23:11other. Sometimes it's what happens.
- 1:23:13All right, Brian. So let's flip it.
- 1:23:15Let's look at our big screeners this week.
- 1:23:18What's going to be on your big screen and some point in time
- 1:23:20during the day? Saturday, I've got Florida at
- 1:23:24Tennessee, that's going to be my big screener.
- 1:23:28Tennis tendon. Oh hey, man.
- 1:23:32If we look at the, you know, the guys that are showing out, I
- 1:23:35mean, obviously, you know, we got one starter we're playing
- 1:23:39against this week that used to be on the Hokies.
- 1:23:41We've got another down in Louisville started on that
- 1:23:45offensive line. We got Hendon tearing it up in
- 1:23:47Tennessee that sees a Heisman front-runner.
- 1:23:50At this point tastes case playing good over Kentucky.
- 1:23:53Yeah. It's a tough look, man.
- 1:23:57It's a tough look. But when when I look at that
- 1:24:02one, Tennessee is actually a 10-point favorite here and
- 1:24:06that's a little too rich for my blood.
- 1:24:09Okay. So I'm going to take Florida in
- 1:24:11the 10 but I think Tennessee wins the game outright but I've
- 1:24:17got Florida and that in the 10 points here that is a lot to
- 1:24:21play. Especially I mean Tennessee's
- 1:24:23had very little success of the floor over the last Decade heck
- 1:24:26over the place full decade. So that is a lot to lay in.
- 1:24:30Again, they got up for Utah and I think I think that's a sign
- 1:24:36that now for me I'm going to stay in the ACC.
- 1:24:40It is probably the game that is either going to in DJ ukeleles
- 1:24:44career or springboard him to actually doing big things.
- 1:24:50As Clemson. Wake Forest is going to be a
- 1:24:52high noon kick. So I'm going to miss probably
- 1:24:54about half of this game because of Baseball, I'll come in, check
- 1:24:57the second half, probably be following on the phone while I'm
- 1:25:00there. I do think.
- 1:25:03Clemson wins think Clemson's a seven-and-a-half one favor.
- 1:25:06I think Clemson wins out, right? I'm not touching.
- 1:25:09That spread that offense is that offense is to anemic, in the
- 1:25:13defense is too good. I am going to say the under a 55
- 1:25:17and a half, I think it's going to be something like a 24:21
- 1:25:22game. Maybe 2824, Clemson pulls it
- 1:25:25out. Not enough to cover but I think
- 1:25:28that's going to be an entertaining game.
- 1:25:30There's actually a lot of entertaining games.
- 1:25:33You know, I chose this one and it was one more I think Saturday
- 1:25:36night in Corvallis Oregon State USC.
- 1:25:41You said it to me, when we talked earlier, this is a game,
- 1:25:44we're going to know if Lincoln Riley is for Real USC, in year 1
- 1:25:48because that's a tough ass place to play in Oregon, state has
- 1:25:51been playing very good recently. Yeah, I mean I think it's his
- 1:25:56first big test. I think we'll see if this is a
- 1:26:01team that's ready to actually be competitive and challenge for a
- 1:26:05potential college football, playoff spot.
- 1:26:07Or if they're just a team that has some talent, but it's still
- 1:26:10a year or two away from making that step.
- 1:26:15When you look at that team, though, they've got, they've got
- 1:26:17the players. Yeah, and you know, the question
- 1:26:20is has Lincoln Riley, instilled, that That winning culture enough
- 1:26:26in such a short period of time where things start to click when
- 1:26:30it gets tough a little bit. And so we think that there's
- 1:26:34going to be times where that game.
- 1:26:35It might be a might be tough for a little bit.
- 1:26:37We'll see how they react. Yep.
- 1:26:39Because because Oregon state scored over 30 every game.
- 1:26:44This year they did have a would present of State in which, you
- 1:26:47know, everybody will say. Well, if we look at the common
- 1:26:50opponent, Fresno State. USC won by 21.
- 1:26:55I listen to a podcast San Francisco, Niners podcast s in
- 1:27:00one of the guys went to Fresno. So he pays super attention to
- 1:27:02them and like their best player. Went down early, like early
- 1:27:06first half, so we didn't really get a reflection of Fresno State
- 1:27:10vs USC. So I'll probably be up till 1:00
- 1:27:13in the morning. Saturday, I'm just going to go
- 1:27:15ahead and booked into 9:30. Kick have a couple late
- 1:27:18cocktails and some whatever's left over in the fridge.
- 1:27:23Remember to tell everybody though, that the transitive
- 1:27:26property does not exist in college football, so you can
- 1:27:29look common opponent. All you want to with that
- 1:27:31doesn't mean shit. It don't mean shit.
- 1:27:34It don't mean. Shit in its wild in, I think the
- 1:27:38last few weekends with some of these games and some of the
- 1:27:40finishes have just been Perfect. It's why we love Sundays to
- 1:27:47don't get us wrong. We love Sundays.
- 1:27:49We have our team's Brian is currently wanted to go well
- 1:27:52probably kill someone who wanted to kill 15 years ago but I mean
- 1:27:55when I can run but accurate accurate but but Saturday's is
- 1:28:02where we live. It's it's I think when you're
- 1:28:05when you grow up in the South it's just it's just a little
- 1:28:09different on Saturdays and, you know, Brian, you went to us
- 1:28:12successful deep. Three school.
- 1:28:13Where even though at 1,200 people on campus, Saturday's
- 1:28:18were wild on Hampton cities campus during a football game,
- 1:28:22so it's a little different Force.
- 1:28:26Alright? Alright, be quiet.
- 1:28:29Robbie that, that was one time after one too, many drinks.
- 1:28:41No comment. Never let anything breaking over
- 1:28:46the last little while we've been.
- 1:28:47All right at 90 minutes, brother.
