- 0:08Speaker 1: Hey, what's happened everybody? Andrew decheco here with the Checho
- 0:12Daily hope everyone to enjoin their Saturday afternoon And obviously
- 0:17there's a lot going right in the Philadelphia sports world
- 0:19at the moment. The Phillies win their first game of
- 0:23their three game series with the Mets in resounding fashion,
- 0:25winning ten to two. That's all good. They play again tonight.
- 0:29But today we're going to continue our three part series.
- 0:33The third part of the three part series where I
- 0:36highlight my biggest question surrounding the offense the defense, and
- 0:39today we finish things off with special teams. Now, special
- 0:43teams is an often neglected in terms of conversation piece.
- 0:49It's a neglected facet of the game, but it's highly
- 0:53important and it's not discussed unless there is a noticeable
- 0:56blemish or something like a big play where's I can
- 1:02recall Will Shipley forcing the fumble in the NFC title game.
- 1:05But other than that, it's an underdiscussed facet of the game.
- 1:09And the question that I have, I mean, you can
- 1:11certainly make a case for Jake Elliott. Will Jake Elliott
- 1:15round back into form, is that something that could linger?
- 1:18Because he did have a down season, he's getting a
- 1:20little bit older, but I am not of that belief.
- 1:23I think Jake Elliott is going to have a bounce
- 1:25back season, and we really will have no way of
- 1:28knowing until we get the training camp. But if you
- 1:31look at his body of work, he's been incredibly productive
- 1:36throughout his career. Perhaps last season was a one off,
- 1:41and again we're gonna learn more about that in training camp.
- 1:44But the question that I have is surrounding the return game,
- 1:48because let's not forget the Eagles lost Brittain Covey, Isaiah Rodgers,
- 1:52and Kenny gangwoll And free agency, so there are vacancies
- 1:56at kick and punt return. Now they have a couple
- 1:59plays in place, but that may not be a logical fallback.
- 2:05I mean it's a fallback plan, but it may not
- 2:07be a logical course of action depending on how expanded
- 2:10their roles are going to be, and especially for one player.
- 2:12He absolutely is going to have a very prominent role
- 2:16on defense. But let's explore some of the names here
- 2:20that you're going to want to know or keep an
- 2:21eye on, and the first of which is Avery Williams,
- 2:24who the Eagles signed him free agency to a one
- 2:26year approven deal. He spent time with the Atlanta Falcons.
- 2:29He was drafted by them. He's about five foot nine,
- 2:33one hundred and ninety five pounds. He's a dynamic player.
- 2:36When he was drafted by the Falcons, I believe that
- 2:38maybe it was his rookie year in twenty two where
- 2:41he was sparingly utilized as a running back. He played
- 2:43running back in high school. The Eagles have him listed
- 2:46as a wide receiver slash return specialist. And if you
- 2:49listen to what Dick Sirianni said at the coaches meeting,
- 2:51he seemed awfully bullish on his prospects. He lit up
- 2:56when talking about him, suggesting that they're going to find
- 2:59ways to add someals offensively with Avery Williams in mind.
- 3:03But he's returned fifty four kicks for two hundred eleven
- 3:07yards and fifty eight punts for six hundred and thirty yards,
- 3:10and he would be the logical choice to fill both roles.
- 3:14It's also worth noting that he was sidelined for otia,
- 3:17so he did not participate with an undisclosed injury. We'll
- 3:20have to keep an eye on that in training camp.
- 3:22But he would be the front runner to overtake both positions,
- 3:27which would free up one of these players. And that
- 3:29next player that we're going to talk about is Will Shipley.
- 3:33Will Shipley was the one of the kick returners alongside
- 3:37Kenny Gangwell and Isaiah Rodgers. Last season. He always had
- 3:41one hundred and seventy three yards on six runbacks. He
- 3:45was primarily the lead blocker for game Well or Rodgers,
- 3:49but he does have some some downhill elements to his game.
- 3:53He gets north and south on the returns. However, he
- 3:56may not be the favorite because he may have a
- 4:01much more significant role on offense, where he's expected to
- 4:04be the number two running back behind sat Blon Barkley,
- 4:07and his past catching prowess is likely to be you know,
- 4:11exploited in the offense, so you have to wonder if
- 4:14they're going going to want to add to his workload.
- 4:17But he's an option at kick returner if Williams doesn't
- 4:20pan out or some of the other players aren't able
- 4:22to step up and take the reins. But it's a
- 4:25nice fallback plan to have. I just think he might
- 4:28be a little bit too valuable for this Eagles team
- 4:30to throw him back there and expose Shipley to unnecessary hits.
- 4:35The next player is running back Keelan Robinson. Robinson, of course,
- 4:40was acquired off waivers from the Jaguars a few weeks ago.
- 4:44His hallmark is special teams. He has home run hitting ability,
- 4:48he was a good kick returner in college. He spent
- 4:50time at Alabama and Texas. He also offers the ability
- 4:54to be an impactful gunner. So if he is going
- 4:57to make the team, it's going to have to be
- 4:59via special teams or I mean, he would have to
- 5:02be special to latch on as what I'm expecting to
- 5:04be the fourth running back. But Keeland Robinson's a player
- 5:08that shouldn't be counted out five foot eight, one hundred
- 5:10and ninety one pounds, he runs at four to four
- 5:12to two and he has very good linear speed, so
- 5:18he doesn't have a lot of NFL experience. He could
- 5:19return just two kicks for thirty four yards. Last year
- 5:22as a rookie with the Jaguars, he was drafted in
- 5:24the fifth round and he only played in six games.
- 5:27So he's an unknown variable, I would say, but he's
- 5:31somebody that obviously when he was claimed off waivers, the
- 5:34first inclination for me was that the Eagles have plans
- 5:36for him on special teams, or at least want to
- 5:39give him a long look, and they're trying to have
- 5:40some optionality there so that they don't necessarily have to
- 5:43lean on Shipley or maybe another player who has a
- 5:49larger role on offense or defense. The next player is
- 5:55a second year wide receiver in a Nias Smith. Now,
- 5:58an Ia Smith, I really like his odds well as
- 6:00a punt returner. We talked about Avery Williams well. The
- 6:03next option for me that would make the most sense
- 6:06and really provide some value would be to utilize Smith
- 6:10as a punt returner. He rolled up eight hundred and
- 6:14thirty six return yards and two touchdowns on eighty two
- 6:17punt return attempts while he was at Texas A and M.
- 6:21He's solidly built, he has some twitchiness to his game,
- 6:25and I think that what I noticed from Anius was
- 6:27that last summer it looked like a rookie who was
- 6:30dropped into the deep end and was sort of treading
- 6:32water throughout the season. When he was healthy, he was
- 6:36fielding punts a lot cleaner. In practice. He was just
- 6:40carrying himself like a more confident player, and sometimes that
- 6:43happens as you start to acclimate to the NFL and
- 6:46you're able to string together some successful days, then all
- 6:48of a sudden, things start to even out and you're
- 6:51able to be the player that you always were. So
- 6:54Anius is a little bit different because he's a backup
- 6:58slot receiver Slater Bill. He's five foot nine, so he
- 7:02doesn't have the ability to play on the outside. So
- 7:04as a backup slot receiver, to have that game day value,
- 7:08you have to be able to provide something on special
- 7:11teams or you're just going to sit on the back
- 7:14end of the roster as a weekly inactive And I
- 7:15don't know that the Eagles are in a position where
- 7:18they can afford to stash somebody like that for the
- 7:20sake of doing so. So for Anius, I think to stick,
- 7:25he's likely going to have to make an impact on
- 7:27kickoff coverage, but most likely punt return and help that
- 7:33return game and give them that answer so you can
- 7:34have that built in value. He would be my second
- 7:37choice and the one that would make the most sense.
- 7:39Behind Avery Williams. Another player to keep an eye on,
- 7:43wide receiver Danny Gray. Danny Gray was back to return
- 7:47kicks on the scout team and practice last year. He
- 7:50returned some kicks during OTA's and they had a lot
- 7:54of reserved players, some rookie free agents back there with them,
- 7:57So perhaps they were just trying to fulfill the role
- 7:59with some bodies while someone like the Will Shipley was
- 8:04practicing kickoff coverage. That could also be the case, But
- 8:07Danny Gray has a realistic opportunity to make this Eagles
- 8:10team as a fifth receiver if he's able to parlay
- 8:12his spring success into training camp success. And we talked
- 8:18about and I smt that four and five spot for
- 8:20receiver is up for grabs and if Gray can hang
- 8:23on and make it well, he would be a logical
- 8:27choice to step in and maybe be a kick returner
- 8:29because he has four three speed and a lot of
- 8:32potential at just twenty six years old. He's the name
- 8:34to keep an eye on as one of my training
- 8:36camp dark horses. Another one to keep an eye on,
- 8:40or another one in the running, I should say, is
- 8:43a rookie free agent wide receiver by the name of
- 8:45Taylor Morn Taylor Moran for those who don't know, he
- 8:49holds a Wake Forest record for most receiving yards in
- 8:51his career twy nine hundred and seventy four and also
- 8:54ranks second all time in put return yards eight hundred
- 8:57and nine. In twenty twenty four, he averaged seventeen yards
- 9:01and ran one back four touchdowns. He liked the production there,
- 9:04and I'm expecting him to see a lot of targets
- 9:06in training camp, but he's so far down the pecking
- 9:09order that he's going to have to maximize every opportunity
- 9:13when he gets those in practice to showcase his versatility
- 9:17as a punt returner and try to carve out some value.
- 9:20But opportunities are going to be at a premium because
- 9:22of the nature of his standing in the pecking order.
- 9:25So for him to rule you emerge, he's going to
- 9:26have to be special. But he does have a decorated career,
- 9:30an established career at returning punts, so he's the name
- 9:33that he might want to highlight because it may come
- 9:35up at some point this summer. There's also a wide receiver,
- 9:39Giles Jackson, a rookie who was signed off of a
- 9:42successful tryout off a rookie mini camp and again five
- 9:47ft nine hundred and eighty five pounds, not a big receiver,
- 9:49kind of built like a Nias Smith, but he over
- 9:53his two seasons at Michigan and Fort Washington, produced seventeen
- 9:57oney seven hundred and thirty yards, a two touchdown off
- 10:00seventy one kickoff return, so this is a kickoff return player.
- 10:04There's different slots for some of these players, and it's
- 10:07important to have that distinction. But he also did record
- 10:10twenty five punt returns over his college career, so that's
- 10:14not completely new terrain for him. He's going to have
- 10:17to really make his mark there if he expects to
- 10:20stick around. It's obviously an uphill climb for players like
- 10:23tayl Or Moran or Giles Jackson. But again we're going
- 10:26through the names of players who have returnability, and Giles
- 10:29Jackson is certainly one of them. And then we round
- 10:32things off by mentioning two players who were probably going
- 10:36to have We talked about Bill Shipley having a larger role.
- 10:39Two players that have vital roles already. They're entrenched in
- 10:42roles on offense and defense, respectively, the first being wide
- 10:46receiver Johan Dotson, who recorded three hundred and thirty eight
- 10:50punt return yards and a touchdown on twenty five returns
- 10:53at Penn State. I remember that eighty one yarder that
- 10:55he had. He didn't return any punts for the Eagles
- 10:58last season, but he has been working with the punt
- 11:01returners when the Eagles go to the special team's portion
- 11:04of practice, at least last season, and knowing that he
- 11:07has that capability, that's another player that they might fight,
- 11:10they might be comfortable with, and might find some comfortability there.
- 11:13But again, as the third receiver on this team, and
- 11:16I'm expecting Johan Dotson to be the Eagle's most improved
- 11:18offensive player, I don't know if it would be proudent
- 11:21to put him back there. I also don't know if
- 11:23the Eagles view him as a punt returner, at least
- 11:26in the way where he's going to factor into their
- 11:30roster equation when they're trying to configure the positions. He's
- 11:33the number three receiver and he does have that capability,
- 11:36but I would have to think that they don't want
- 11:38to deploy him in that capacity. The last one rounding
- 11:42things out is Cooper dejen Again, a good punt returner,
- 11:46but he is arguably one of the most important defensive
- 11:48players on the Eagles roster. He has the home run
- 11:51hitting ability, shorthands but when you're playing the nickel position
- 11:56and you completely you've already become one of the best
- 11:59at that position, I am not so sure that putting
- 12:02him back there on punts where you're letting the punt
- 12:05team t off on you. I'm not so sure that
- 12:08the Eagles would be cool with it. And based on
- 12:10the comments from Vic Vangil last season, he's seem less
- 12:13than enthused that one of his standouts were relegated to
- 12:17or had to wear an extra hat in terms of
- 12:19special teams. So, I mean, I think the front runners
- 12:23here if you take anything from this Avery Williams, who
- 12:26can do both, and I a Smith who can return punts.
- 12:30And you shouldn't discount Danny Gray either because of the
- 12:33receiver situation. And it seems kind of fluid as the
- 12:37four and five spots seemingly are up for grabs. Johnny
- 12:41Wilson has the inside track to be the four, but
- 12:45that fifth spot, if you can provide value game day value,
- 12:50you're gonna have a decent shot at making the fifty
- 12:53three man roster. But as you can see, there are
- 12:55questions here. There's a lot of names, but we have
- 12:57to find out who's going to rise to the top.
- 13:00Who's going to emerge and fill the shoes of three
- 13:04players who shouldered that responsibility last season in different capacities.
- 13:09But it's an interesting thing to talk about. It's not
- 13:12a prevalent storyline, it's not something that's often being discussed.
- 13:16But when you look at special teams, it's not kicker
- 13:18that has my curiosity. It's who emerges in the return game,
- 13:23and I can't wait to see how it plays out.
- 13:25That's one of the many things I'll be keeping an
- 13:27eye on this summer in Eagles' training camp. That's going
- 13:30to do it for this edition of The Checko Daily,
- 13:33I'm mandered to Checko and I'll talk to everybody on Monday.
