- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the Australian
- 0:16youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:20Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone.
- 0:23OK do need to preface, this is my 6th podcast episode in three
- 0:28days. I actually wrote three years in
- 0:31my notes 3 days. I wish it was in three years
- 0:34three days. I feel so delirious.
- 0:37And you guys know I suffer from pretty chronic insomnia and I
- 0:41really did not sleep last night. So I apologize if this episode
- 0:45is not very strong, but I will have a deep dive for you guys
- 0:49tomorrow which is really exciting.
- 0:51And we also had a new Patreon episode go up today on the
- 0:55stories that I didn't cover this month and why I chose not to
- 0:59cover them with some of my. I suppose controversial is maybe
- 1:05not the right word, but some opinions that I would maybe be
- 1:09too scared to share publicly for various reasons.
- 1:13OK, let's get into the stories for today.
- 1:17So the first story that I have for you guys is a creator named
- 1:21Jane has become the center of some discourse after making a
- 1:24video saying she doesn't think that she would ever go on a
- 1:27girls trip as a married woman. Jane is a creator based in
- 1:32Connecticut and she made this video last week, but it's really
- 1:36been picked up by the algorithm and sparked a lot of discourse.
- 1:39So here's a clip. As someone who's married, I
- 1:41don't think I would ever go on a girls trip, and if I do, I don't
- 1:48think it would. I can't.
- 1:49Like I can't imagine myself ever going on a girls trip.
- 1:53Like a girls date night, maybe a girls weekend away or something.
- 1:58But a four or five day girls trip outside of the country,
- 2:03away from my husband and my child?
- 2:06That simply just does not sound appetizing to me at all.
- 2:10Like, I'm good with a date night.
- 2:12Nobody takes as good care of me as my husband does.
- 2:16I am not comfortable with anyone the way I'm comfortable with my
- 2:20husband. The response to this has been,
- 2:22as you would expect, tons of women saying they love being
- 2:25married, they love their kids, they love being a mother, but
- 2:28they also love their girlfriends just as much.
- 2:31They love going on a girls trip just as much.
- 2:34So I wanted to cover this not to criticize Jane personally, but
- 2:38rather I think the discourse in general is important considering
- 2:41first of all the demographic of our audience.
- 2:44We have a lot of young women in who are, you know, going to be
- 2:47possibly getting into serious relationships soon, possibly
- 2:51getting married. And also because of the rise
- 2:55that we've seen in conservativism.
- 2:58Conservative. I always say conservativism.
- 3:01I always say I don't. Conservatism.
- 3:04That just sounds wrong. OK, yeah.
- 3:06Conservatism. I don't know why but my brain
- 3:09reads and says conservativism, but conservatism, trad wife
- 3:14culture, and all of this right wing propaganda which I don't
- 3:17think she's trying to make here. I want to be clear, but I think
- 3:21in general this topic is important to discuss.
- 3:24So first, I actually think it's great that she feels safe with
- 3:28her husband and that she feels like he takes such good care of
- 3:31her. I'm the same.
- 3:32I don't think there's anyone in the world who takes as good care
- 3:35of me as my husband does. But the concern here from users
- 3:39is that so often women end up losing their identity to being a
- 3:44wife and a mother rather than allowing being a wife and a
- 3:48mother add to their identity. So it becomes essentially their
- 3:52whole identity. And look, I get it.
- 3:54Not from a wife perspective. I mean, I am a wife, but not
- 3:57from that perspective. As a business owner, like, that
- 4:00is my entire identity. And at this point in Centennial
- 4:04World's journey, it feels genuinely impossible for it not
- 4:08to be my whole identity. So I imagine that when you have
- 4:11a child, like when you are a mother, it's probably like that
- 4:15tenfold. But at the end of the day, I am
- 4:19so much more than just a business owner.
- 4:21And I try to remain aware of it, even though it is very hard.
- 4:25And I try to remain aware of the fact that if I'm not nurturing
- 4:29other parts of my life and myself throughout this
- 4:32experience, I might look up one day when it's all over and
- 4:35realize I've lost myself. I've lost my friends, I've lost
- 4:38my relationship to this business.
- 4:41So there's tons of women, especially older women in her
- 4:43comment section and making stitches and videos about this
- 4:47saying that was me too. And then, you know, my children
- 4:50became teenagers. They didn't need me as much
- 4:52anymore. Or they went off to college,
- 4:54they went off to adulthood, you know, and then who are you at
- 4:59the end of the day? I am not comparing being a
- 5:01business owner to motherhood, but that is currently the like
- 5:04identity struggle journey that I am on.
- 5:07And anecdotally, something my mom talks about actually quite a
- 5:11lot is how when she first got married, which was 40 years ago
- 5:14by the way, she was one of the only ones in her married friend
- 5:19group, like her group of girlfriends that all got married
- 5:21who wanted to keep hanging out and doing things together and
- 5:24just like, didn't expect their relationships to change.
- 5:27She often talks about how she lost so many friends in that
- 5:30transition because a lot of them felt like they had to change
- 5:33their identity completely. And I mean, that's only two
- 5:36generations ago. And I feel like it really has
- 5:38changed since then. Like, you know, I'm 34, I have a
- 5:41lot of friends who are married. And I would say my friends being
- 5:44married is like the least interesting thing about them.
- 5:47I feel like I forget that, like all my friends are married and I
- 5:49assume they forget that I'm married too because it's really
- 5:51not that central to our identities.
- 5:54Like we have such full lives outside of that.
- 5:56It's a part of our life. It's a big important part of our
- 5:59lives, but it's not our entire lives.
- 6:02And I wouldn't want my partner to feel that way about me.
- 6:05And obviously, you know, my husband is super happy for me to
- 6:09not feel that way necessarily about him and about our
- 6:11marriage. So that is kind of the main
- 6:13points extracted from this discourse but put with my own
- 6:17personal spin on it I suppose. But let me know what you guys
- 6:20think about that. OK, the next story that I have
- 6:22for you guys is there is some backlash right now around Harry
- 6:26Styles and his pre sale tickets for his tour.
- 6:32So Harry Styles has announced a new album and released a new
- 6:35song which I'm sure you guys have seen and possibly heard.
- 6:38And he has also announced a small tour for the first time
- 6:41since 2023. Presale for the tour went up
- 6:44this this week and he's receiving a bunch of backlash
- 6:47for the pricing of the tickets. Some of the tickets fans were
- 6:50showing online in screenshots on Twitter, Reddit, TikTok were as
- 6:55expensive as $1000, like USD for one ticket in the upper bowl.
- 7:02Now for comparison, in 2023, Harry's last tour, like I said,
- 7:06the average ticket price was reportedly 115 dollars, again,
- 7:11USD. So this is a big jump.
- 7:13And interestingly, what has made fans even more mad is that Harry
- 7:17reportedly isn't using dynamic pricing.
- 7:20So this means in theory he either had a hand in what these
- 7:25tickets were priced, or he was at least probably aware of the
- 7:29pricing. So this is from Forbes quote.
- 7:31While in the Ticketmaster queue, fans were notified that tickets
- 7:34were priced in advance by the tour from $50.00 to $1182.40 and
- 7:40that prices would not be changed during pre sale or on sale.
- 7:44So these are some comments from Reddit quote.
- 7:46The criticism he's receiving for the ticket prices is deserved.
- 7:50BH Harry isn't a rookie in the industry.
- 7:52He definitely has a say in what ticket prices for his tour
- 7:55should be. 1000 plus dollars for a face value ticket is
- 7:58disgusting and just because some people will pay that it doesn't
- 8:01mean they should have to. I'm really curious what his
- 8:03response will be. I'll also be very disappointed
- 8:06if he just ignores it and then someone responded.
- 8:09This is what I'm saying. I know he can't control
- 8:11everything but he does have a voice.
- 8:12For some reason he doesn't use it.
- 8:14The fact that tickets for someone like Beyoncé are cheaper
- 8:16is wild. He does look really greedy right
- 8:18now to be fair. And the other thing that people
- 8:20can't believe about this is that he has put tickets on sale for a
- 8:24tour and they are so expensive and the album isn't even out
- 8:28yet. I feel like the ticket pricing
- 8:30stuff, while it may be kind of a repetitive story because we see
- 8:35this a lot, I think it's important to keep talking about
- 8:39because it's that kind of public pressure that will make artists
- 8:42reconsider and to understand that touring is really
- 8:44expensive, especially since lockdowns in COVID.
- 8:48You know, everything has surged so much since then.
- 8:52I totally understand that. But the price of live music
- 8:55should never be someone's paycheck.
- 8:58Like, just full stop. It should never be that.
- 9:01And you know, it's really funny because there was actually a lot
- 9:04of discourse. This is, again, kind of an
- 9:06anecdote. I don't know what this episode
- 9:07is, you guys. I'm sorry.
- 9:08When we came out of lockdown here in Sydney and NSW and they
- 9:14released this initiative within the state to help people get
- 9:18back out into the community. And so you could get, I think it
- 9:20was like $50, maybe it was $250. There was some type of voucher
- 9:24that they gave to residents of NSW and we could use them, you
- 9:29know, at different like restaurants.
- 9:31We could use them at cultural events, like I think museums.
- 9:35We could use them at live music, comedy, that kind of stuff.
- 9:39And I remember, remember there was a lot of discourse at the
- 9:42time, especially from older people who said, you know, back
- 9:45in my day, like this, this sounds like really
- 9:48stereotypical, but like genuinely like back in my day,
- 9:51if we wanted to see an artist, you know, we would save our
- 9:53money and go see them. And now we're handing out, you
- 9:58know, free tickets, essentially. And I remember Sean and I had a
- 10:02conversation with somebody who was in their 60s at the time
- 10:05about this. And we actually, Sean, my
- 10:07husband and we actually explained to this person, I
- 10:09don't think he to understand how much ticket prices are now to
- 10:13see your favorite artists. You know, it's no longer $50
- 10:16even with inflation, you know, it's nowhere near that pricing.
- 10:20Also, we shouldn't be hating on the government giving us, you
- 10:23know, subsidies to go spend on arts and culture.
- 10:25But that aside, the fact that ticket pricing, seeing live
- 10:29music is so incredibly expensive now is just it's outrageous.
- 10:34So I think it's important to keep talking about this,
- 10:36especially for male artists, OK? The girlies, they get a lot of
- 10:39Flack for the ticket prices. And I think it's important that
- 10:43we keep note of this as well for the male artists, OK?
- 10:46And the last story that I have for you guys today is there is a
- 10:49new meme going viral everywhere. And it's the Nutella tricks
- 10:53meme. So this was actually posted in
- 10:56our Discord, which you can join if you're a Patreon member.
- 11:00Sorry, Annabelle is always telling me to plug the Patreon.
- 11:03I'm her boss, but she's like, actually my boss.
- 11:06So Nutella tricks, it's a meme. It comes from a viral post where
- 11:10someone shared a Nutella lifehack, softening the spread
- 11:14by sticking a hand mixer in the jar with the caption Nutella
- 11:17tricks you've never taught in school.
- 11:19So this is obviously like an absurd meme.
- 11:21This was posted on January 24th 2026, so a couple days ago.
- 11:26So the idea of there being a class at school teaching you
- 11:30tricks about Nutella obviously absurd and just absolutely
- 11:35caught fire and has spread everywhere.
- 11:37So now users are reposting and remixing this phrase, pretending
- 11:41that they did learn different things about Nutella tricks in
- 11:44school or joking about people who missed quote UN quote
- 11:47Nutella class. People are actually using this
- 11:49to share nostalgia for different school subjects and this really
- 11:54pulls on, I mean, what we have seen for the last several years,
- 11:57which is the yearning for like pre smartphone time,
- 12:01specifically at school. So people are really like
- 12:04pulling on that with this trend. Obviously it has a lot of that
- 12:08in joke stuff that we talked about a lot where it's like if
- 12:10you know, you know, and if you don't, you're on the outside and
- 12:13it's like funny if you know. And of course it's just the
- 12:15absurdity. And I think Annabelle and I
- 12:17talked about that in an episode at the end of last year.
- 12:20Like memes just take off often because they're so unhinged.
- 12:23Like that is often the through line is they make kind of enough
- 12:26sense to like pick up, but like usually not really any sense and
- 12:32that's why they go viral. So far.
- 12:34I don't know if the brand has picked this up, but obviously
- 12:36this is the perfect opportunity for Nutella or any other type of
- 12:40like spread brand FMCG products to jump on this and make, you
- 12:45know, their brand tricks. See if they can kind of
- 12:47capitalize on that. I know sometimes that doesn't
- 12:49work for users. Like I totally understand that
- 12:52sometimes that's actually the opposite of what users want, but
- 12:55if you can really nail it, I think you could start doing
- 12:58this. If you work at a brand that's
- 13:00similar, I think you could really capture the zeitgeist,
- 13:03but it literally has to be like before the end of the week.
- 13:05Anyways, guys, that's it for Mini Scroll today.
