- 0:09Speaker 1: You're listening to a podcast from News Talks. It'd be
- 0:12Speaker 1: follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
- 0:16Speaker 2: And we welcome into the studio to talk about science.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Doctor Michelle Dickenson, Good morning to you. Good morning, and
- 0:23Speaker 2: you have just arrived fresh from San Diego because you've
- 0:27Speaker 2: been at a mind blowing conference.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I've just been California, San Jose at the GtC
- 0:32Speaker 3: Confidence which is run by Nvidia, where Jensen Huang, the
- 0:36Speaker 3: CEO over that who's probably one of the most powerful
- 0:39Speaker 3: people in tech right now, gave us the lay of
- 0:41Speaker 3: the land for the next twelve months when it comes
- 0:43Speaker 3: to computers and AI and robots and what's happening.
- 0:46Speaker 2: So in video are the big chip people, and we
- 0:48Speaker 2: need their chips to make everything work, and they're booming
- 0:51Speaker 2: because of AI.
- 0:52Speaker 3: At the moment they were the big chip people. They've
- 0:54Speaker 3: become very clever. They now own the whole stack. So
- 0:57Speaker 3: they did make chips. Now they are involved in making
- 1:01Speaker 3: rex of server X for all of these massive AI
- 1:03Speaker 3: data centers. They also own a lot of the software
- 1:07Speaker 3: that makes it so Omniverse, ISAAC SIM a lot of
- 1:10Speaker 3: the simulation software which they showed off which helps people,
- 1:14Speaker 3: and digital twins and a lot of stuff that most
- 1:16Speaker 3: people in the real world don't care about, but these
- 1:18Speaker 3: are the things that help manufacturers and industries to get
- 1:21Speaker 3: there faster. You could do a digital twin of your body,
- 1:24Speaker 3: for example, and understand what would happen if you took
- 1:27Speaker 3: a certain medication, oh wow, without you having to take it,
- 1:30Speaker 3: and then we can work for what's best for you.
- 1:31Speaker 3: So there's a lot of data in that modeling the real.
- 1:34Speaker 2: World and what you showed me in the air, bro
- 1:37Speaker 2: You're show me some photographs from yesterday at this conference,
- 1:40Speaker 2: and there's a lot of robots, and there's little o
- 1:43Speaker 2: lefts from Frozen wandering around, and there's humanoids who are
- 1:47Speaker 2: walking around. They're talking. You can talk to them, they
- 1:50Speaker 2: can talk to you. The help desk is humanoid. They're
- 1:54Speaker 2: making the future real now.
- 1:56Speaker 3: It's so funny coming back, like I just learned a
- 1:58Speaker 3: back in our own New Zealand and I'm like, oh,
- 2:00Speaker 3: you go through security, everything's so manual, Like this is
- 2:02Speaker 3: so nice. I've just been surround us. There are one
- 2:03Speaker 3: hundred and ten robots doing stuff at the conference, including
- 2:07Speaker 3: robotoid concierges, which are they're designed with an emotional sense
- 2:11Speaker 3: of what they do is they're not just a humanoid
- 2:13Speaker 3: that can answer wears the lit nearest coffee shop. They
- 2:16Speaker 3: can pick up if you're stressed, and they respond back
- 2:19Speaker 3: with a tone that matches your emotional state. So a
- 2:22Speaker 3: lot of the robots last year were quite like, I
- 2:24Speaker 3: am a robot, I only have one voice. These ones
- 2:27Speaker 3: are designed to have personality. The Olaf, which was amazing,
- 2:31Speaker 3: which Jensen had on stage, is a beautiful little snowman
- 2:34Speaker 3: for anybody who's watched Frozen that wanders around and looks
- 2:38Speaker 3: just like the real thing. And what was unique about
- 2:40Speaker 3: that and what's different is usually if you were to
- 2:44Speaker 3: so Disney made this robot, if you were to build
- 2:46Speaker 3: a robot, you would spend years trying to work out
- 2:49Speaker 3: how to build it best, what components use, how to
- 2:51Speaker 3: make the movement work best. And instead they just did
- 2:54Speaker 3: a couple of days in a software called Isaac sim
- 2:57Speaker 3: to run millions of simulations to do all of the
- 3:00Speaker 3: question asking in simulation at once. So the robot designers
- 3:04Speaker 3: just had the perfect answer and had to just make
- 3:07Speaker 3: what came out of it okay.
- 3:09Speaker 2: So, and we were talking before about how we've been
- 3:12Speaker 2: phoned up by AI sales rips trying to sell us insurance,
- 3:16Speaker 2: and you can actually have conversations and you can say
- 3:19Speaker 2: you can swear at them and tell them to go away,
- 3:20Speaker 2: and they go, oh, I understand how you feel about that,
- 3:23Speaker 2: and they're quite polite. So now you've seen the humanoids.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Does this freak you out? Or is this actually exciting?
- 3:32Speaker 3: I think it's inevitable. So rather than be freaked out,
- 3:35Speaker 3: I'm lucky that I get to be part of people
- 3:37Speaker 3: who are designing robotics for the world, and I get
- 3:40Speaker 3: to think about putting humans first and what do we
- 3:42Speaker 3: need to think about in doing that. Not everybody is
- 3:45Speaker 3: doing that, but I'd rather be in it and trying
- 3:48Speaker 3: to shape it than be worried that somebody who was
- 3:50Speaker 3: trying to do something to me with them. The aibots
- 3:53Speaker 3: that are calling you are a sign of how people
- 3:55Speaker 3: are trying to save money or make money. Right, there's
- 3:57Speaker 3: that side of it. I guess I'm excited, but I'm
- 4:00Speaker 3: excited because I'm in it and.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I can see, well, I'm not right, so you know, but.
- 4:05Speaker 3: If I wasn't, I think i'd be a bit worried.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Well, as you mean about the airport. You know, if
- 4:10Speaker 2: we replace the humans on the customs line with humanoid
- 4:14Speaker 2: robots who come this with you and do the whole business,
- 4:17Speaker 2: but they do it amazingly, calmly because they don't have
- 4:21Speaker 2: the I'm frazzled thing or I'm tired thing. This will
- 4:25Speaker 2: make our lives better.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Yes, I mean yes, I mean there's always going to
- 4:29Speaker 3: be what we call edge cases in robotics that the
- 4:32Speaker 3: outlier is that you will still need a person. But
- 4:34Speaker 3: for me, who flies a lot, I'm doing the same
- 4:37Speaker 3: thing when I learned at the airport. Every time I've
- 4:38Speaker 3: got nothing to declare, I know, got to carry on
- 4:41Speaker 3: like you know me, you know you this let me
- 4:44Speaker 3: in quigaut. I don't need you know, the human side
- 4:46Speaker 3: of that. But it's also people's livelihoods. Yes, and so
- 4:49Speaker 3: we do have to think about where automation and robotics
- 4:53Speaker 3: is helpful because we already have a workforce shortage in
- 4:56Speaker 3: that space or people. It's a job that we shouldn't
- 4:58Speaker 3: give to people, but you know, the workforce will change
- 5:02Speaker 3: because of it. I am robotics, and I think rather
- 5:04Speaker 3: than be worried about it, I say, understand your job
- 5:08Speaker 3: and what your job is made up of tasks. Understand
- 5:11Speaker 3: those tasks and think, can any of these tasks be automated?
- 5:14Speaker 3: If yes, okay, but if more than ninety percent of
- 5:17Speaker 3: your tasks can be automated in your job, you might
- 5:19Speaker 3: want to think about borrowing something out.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Well. Look, the fellows who showed me were mind blowing,
- 5:25Speaker 2: and the future is coming. As you say, it's inevitable,
- 5:28Speaker 2: and it sounds like you had a really fun time.
- 5:30Speaker 2: He did.
- 5:30Speaker 3: But I'm so glad to be surrounded by humans again
- 5:33Speaker 3: with robots for a whole week.
- 5:34Speaker 2: That's great. Look, and thank you for coming straight here
- 5:36Speaker 2: from the airport. Go home and have a sleep.
- 5:39Speaker 3: And a shower. I will see you next week.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Okay, then, well, not me, We'll see Francisca next week,
- 5:43Speaker 2: because of course, what's Francisco's show?
- 5:46Speaker 1: For more from news Talks, it'd be listen live on
- 5:49Speaker 1: air or online, and keep our shows with you wherever
- 5:52Speaker 1: you go with our podcasts on iHeartRadio.
