- 0:31What's going on, everybody?
- 0:33Welcome to Lunch with the Clydesdale.
- 0:35I'm so pumped, so honored,
- 0:38so jazzed up to have with
- 0:40me the one and only,
- 0:42he goes by a lot of names, Jay Birch,
- 0:44Papa Birch, actor, judge, teacher,
- 0:50Jeffrey Birchfield.
- 0:51So with me in the house, what's going on,
- 0:53man?
- 0:54Oh, nothing much, man.
- 0:55It's my pleasure.
- 0:55Glad to be here.
- 0:57Yeah,
- 0:58so we're going to do Top Five Tuesday
- 1:00today.
- 1:02Today is television shows of all time.
- 1:05We're going to get in that
- 1:06into a little bit.
- 1:08Kenneth DeLapp says El Jefe.
- 1:14So we'll get into that in a little bit.
- 1:16We're going to talk about
- 1:17some of the news in the space today.
- 1:19But I want to get to know
- 1:20you a little bit better.
- 1:21I know you're a retired teacher.
- 1:24You just retired within the calendar,
- 1:26within the year.
- 1:28How's that first year off going for you?
- 1:31Uh, so far so good.
- 1:33It's, um, my summer was spent, um,
- 1:36watching my grandson for the,
- 1:37for the most part, he's, um, uh,
- 1:40nonverbal autistic.
- 1:41He's nine years old.
- 1:42So, uh, we had a,
- 1:44had a lot going on this summer, but it's,
- 1:46it's moving right along.
- 1:48I'm,
- 1:48had a million projects around our,
- 1:50we live in a house.
- 1:51It's a little over a hundred years old.
- 1:53And so I've had trees that
- 1:55have fallen down that I've needed to cut.
- 1:58I've had windows replaced.
- 2:00And so the,
- 2:02the retirement while not teaching,
- 2:05I'm still as busy, busy as ever.
- 2:08And you,
- 2:09you moved to help take care of
- 2:11your grandson.
- 2:12I did.
- 2:13We already had a house in Hamilton, Texas,
- 2:15which is a small agrarian
- 2:17community in Central Texas,
- 2:20about a little less than
- 2:22twenty seven hundred people, I guess.
- 2:24And we were living in
- 2:25Pflugerville outside of Austin,
- 2:27which is a city or rural or
- 2:30not rural suburban city of
- 2:32about sixty thousand.
- 2:34Okay.
- 2:35So then at your new place, you have a shed,
- 2:40a tent.
- 2:42What do we call the workout space?
- 2:46And so that's Camp Pay Him.
- 2:49And so as you can see,
- 2:51we've got Pay Him Stuff On.
- 2:53I owe everything that I am
- 2:56as far as like athletic-wise stuff.
- 2:59as far as the last few years
- 3:01or several years since
- 3:02twenty nineteen to Josh Bridges.
- 3:05So just a little shout out to him.
- 3:07But I've built me a workout
- 3:11space in my backyard using, you know,
- 3:13one of those standard little tent things.
- 3:16And then I've just put all
- 3:17my equipment out there and
- 3:19that's where I get after it.
- 3:22So a while back, gosh,
- 3:24probably a couple years,
- 3:25I was interviewing Cooper Marsh,
- 3:27and you were in the chat,
- 3:29and he talked about how you
- 3:31would come to these train with Josh's,
- 3:33or are they called Pay the Man?
- 3:38They're Pay Him Camps is
- 3:39what they're called.
- 3:41And you would come,
- 3:42and you got to be really
- 3:43friendly with Josh and
- 3:44Cooper and all those guys.
- 3:46What was that experience like?
- 3:49It was, I mean...
- 3:51you couldn't find a more
- 3:53personable and helpful group of guys.
- 3:57I mean,
- 3:57it was a fairly intimate situation.
- 4:00I mean,
- 4:00there's usually about twenty five
- 4:02to twenty seven people that are there.
- 4:04And the ones that the one
- 4:07that I attended was in San
- 4:09Diego at Josh's house in
- 4:11the garage where he started
- 4:13all of his videoing and
- 4:15everything of his workouts.
- 4:17And so it was it was kind of
- 4:18iconic just to go work out there.
- 4:20But
- 4:21We also went to Cuape,
- 4:25which is a mountain there
- 4:28in San Diego where Josh
- 4:31used to run and do a lot of training.
- 4:34And so we got that
- 4:35opportunity to go and kind
- 4:36of do that with him and
- 4:38have some conversation.
- 4:40And so it was really an
- 4:42awesome experience.
- 4:45And, you know, the funny thing is Cooper,
- 4:48I started doing –
- 4:50pay him stuff for following
- 4:52Josh's programming around
- 4:54twenty eighteen.
- 4:55But I was also kind of doing
- 4:57some of his supplement
- 4:59stuff with X Endurance.
- 5:01Well,
- 5:01Cooper at the time worked for X
- 5:03Endurance and challenged me
- 5:07to do Karen after taking
- 5:09one of their products.
- 5:10And that's kind of how me
- 5:11and Cooper got acquainted.
- 5:13And it's funny,
- 5:15I was I was supposed to do Karen and then
- 5:18I'd wait a week and do it
- 5:19again to retest it.
- 5:21Well,
- 5:21it seemed like my programming started
- 5:23kind of following the
- 5:26schedule of how to build up
- 5:27to a better Karen.
- 5:30And so I asked people, I said,
- 5:32do you like Josh or something?
- 5:36And yeah, it just so happened that he did.
- 5:40And things just worked out.
- 5:43We've been,
- 5:44I would say that we've been
- 5:45friends for a while now.
- 5:48And then you've also,
- 5:50you also know Bethany
- 5:52Flores when she lived in Austin,
- 5:55I'm assuming.
- 5:56Yeah.
- 5:58First,
- 5:58first CrossFit athlete I ever worked
- 6:01with as far as like going
- 6:02and working out with.
- 6:04And so I hear a lot of
- 6:07stories about people who go
- 6:09to CrossFit for their first time and,
- 6:11you know, they may be scared that,
- 6:15you know, this or that will,
- 6:16imagine going to a Saturday
- 6:20meetup where it's just kind of everybody,
- 6:22it's not a formal class,
- 6:23and Bethany is the one
- 6:25that's actually doing the
- 6:26workout and programming the
- 6:27workout for you to do,
- 6:28and so it's a little scary, but I mean,
- 6:32she kept, you know,
- 6:33she made us feel right at home,
- 6:35and I mean, it was awesome,
- 6:37and so I went several more times,
- 6:40and that's, that kind of got me
- 6:42into the box and actually a
- 6:44little more into the
- 6:45methodology than what I'd
- 6:47been in previous times.
- 6:49Yeah.
- 6:50Going to Christie O'Connell's gym.
- 6:52Uh,
- 6:54it was crazy because there's big events
- 6:56here in Columbus,
- 6:56like the Arnold fitness expo.
- 6:59And a lot of the CrossFit
- 7:00athletes would drop in and
- 7:01then they would drop into
- 7:02her gym because they knew her.
- 7:04And so it w you'd walk in on
- 7:07it on a day and there's
- 7:08just Madaris warming up or there's,
- 7:09you know, and you're just like,
- 7:11holy crap.
- 7:12Um,
- 7:14I gotta work out in front of these people,
- 7:15but they're just normal
- 7:16people at the end of the day.
- 7:19Right.
- 7:21Well, that's really cool.
- 7:22And I want to thank you so
- 7:23much for taking time out,
- 7:24jumping on the show with me.
- 7:28Wow, that's crazy.
- 7:28Corey.
- 7:29First, Kenneth says,
- 7:30I heard that the first rule
- 7:31of pay him camp is that you
- 7:32don't talk about pay him camp.
- 7:35Yeah.
- 7:36Well,
- 7:36I didn't tell you everything that
- 7:37happens at pay him camp.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:41I'm sure you're sworn to secrecy.
- 7:43Corey, sorry I'm late.
- 7:44It's snowing its ass off down here.
- 7:47Yeah, man, I saw that.
- 7:49Holy cow.
- 7:52Yeah,
- 7:55I just saw a boat post of Moss that
- 8:02does uplift.
- 8:03Yep.
- 8:03And he's like doing
- 8:04thrusters or something in the snow.
- 8:06And he lives up in Slidell,
- 8:08just north of New Orleans.
- 8:13yeah I lived in tallahassee
- 8:15florida for four years it
- 8:16snowed one time there and
- 8:18it shut the city down like
- 8:21just yeah there's not a
- 8:24plow in sight you know so
- 8:25it just shut everything
- 8:26down yeah mark lost that
- 8:29too I was trying to think
- 8:31of yeah mark's a great guy
- 8:33mark's a great guy um I
- 8:35think I think corey just
- 8:37sent me pictures of the snow in louisiana
- 8:42Holy moly.
- 8:43I don't know.
- 8:45Yeah.
- 8:49That is, that's crazy, man.
- 8:52And he lives over in Gonzalez, which is,
- 8:55is still kind of in Southern Louisiana.
- 8:57So that's a good one.
- 9:00This is a street view.
- 9:03Oh yeah.
- 9:03I heard that they shut down high tin,
- 9:06which is the main highway
- 9:07going across the Southern
- 9:09part of Louisiana.
- 9:11Yeah.
- 9:12Yeah, went right through Tallahassee.
- 9:14Yeah.
- 9:16That's how we would get over
- 9:17to New Orleans is I-ten.
- 9:20Crazy, but so, wow.
- 9:24Well, stay warm, man.
- 9:25It is just bitterly cold here.
- 9:27The feels like temperature
- 9:28is like negative ten right now.
- 9:31Just had to take my wife to
- 9:32PT this morning,
- 9:34and warming up the car took a long time.
- 9:36Oh, man, I bet.
- 9:40So she has doctor's
- 9:41appointment follow-up
- 9:42tomorrow and another PT on Thursday.
- 9:45So hopefully it starts to
- 9:46warm up a little bit.
- 9:47But she really needs to get
- 9:49those staples out tomorrow.
- 9:51So hopefully we can get there.
- 9:53Yeah, Scott,
- 9:53I don't know how y'all live up there.
- 9:55Yeah, I mean, it's my own fault.
- 9:59I moved to Florida.
- 10:00I lived there for four years.
- 10:02And it was so brutally hot down there,
- 10:05I couldn't take it.
- 10:08So, you know,
- 10:09it's either you're cooped up
- 10:11in the summer down there or
- 10:12you're cooped up in the winter.
- 10:13Yeah.
- 10:13True enough.
- 10:18Well,
- 10:18let's hit some news bites real quick
- 10:20and then we'll get into our top five.
- 10:23The rumors are true.
- 10:25Ricky Gerard is now a proven athlete.
- 10:29It was announced by proven yesterday.
- 10:35I hate it.
- 10:37I hate it with every piece
- 10:39of fabric in my being.
- 10:41I've said this a million
- 10:42times on this show.
- 10:44I'm friends with Justin Kotler.
- 10:47And I think what the chance
- 10:49that Justin took with him
- 10:51coming off the drug
- 10:52suspension and his
- 10:57performance has been elite
- 10:59ever since he's been with Justin.
- 11:01The only times he didn't do
- 11:02well is when he got hurt.
- 11:06So the reason for the move
- 11:08just doesn't make any sense to me.
- 11:09And it, I, I'm, I am loyal to a fault.
- 11:13So that, that like just kills me.
- 11:17So do you think his loyalty
- 11:18lies now more with the fact
- 11:20that he's with somebody
- 11:22who's from Australia who has been a,
- 11:24you know,
- 11:24a CrossFit champion for seven
- 11:27times rather than keeping
- 11:29his loyalty with the guy
- 11:30that actually took a chance on him?
- 11:31Uh,
- 11:33that's what the way it looks on the
- 11:34outside.
- 11:34Doesn't it?
- 11:36Yeah.
- 11:40You know, it's funny.
- 11:40I knew a kid in high school one time.
- 11:42Sorry to kind of take away from that,
- 11:44but not to take away from
- 11:46it because it has to do with loyalty.
- 11:48And I knew a kid that had
- 11:50made a commitment to a
- 11:51college coming out of high school.
- 11:54And because of whatever reason,
- 11:58his dad had gone to this
- 11:59other university.
- 12:01He just dropped that one
- 12:03university who he had
- 12:04already committed to and
- 12:06went to the university.
- 12:08to the father's university, which I, to me,
- 12:11I'm like,
- 12:12if you give your word to go somewhere.
- 12:13And of course this was all
- 12:15before NIL and all that kind of stuff.
- 12:18Then you go where you're supposed to,
- 12:19you go where you say you're going to go.
- 12:21Yeah, I agree.
- 12:24And I don't even know if people know this.
- 12:26I think like Justin took on
- 12:28Benny Gerard as a coach,
- 12:30in addition to Ricky as an athlete.
- 12:33So like they did,
- 12:35they did a lot for that family.
- 12:38Justin traveled to Australia
- 12:39to be with him during Tori
- 12:41and did all that kind of stuff.
- 12:42And then just because your
- 12:46new training partners are
- 12:47proven now you've yeah,
- 12:54but it is what it is.
- 12:55I mean, that's his,
- 12:56his decision and that's his
- 12:58road road to go down.
- 13:01I am definitely not a fan at
- 13:02this point um but I'm sure
- 13:06he'll have others and he
- 13:07doesn't really care what I
- 13:08think at the end of the day
- 13:10well same I mean so uh last
- 13:15night we had a national championship game
- 13:18Ohio State with the victory.
- 13:21Two different times during that game,
- 13:22I was ready to go to bed.
- 13:24And as I went to go up the steps,
- 13:26Notre Dame scored.
- 13:28And I was like, oh, crap.
- 13:30Now I can't go to bed.
- 13:32They made it a little bit
- 13:33closer at the end.
- 13:34But at the end of the day,
- 13:35Ohio State was just way too much.
- 13:39Now I've got to live in a
- 13:41town with the national championship team.
- 13:43And that's what I've got to
- 13:44hear about for the next
- 13:45three hundred and sixty five days.
- 13:50And I'm sure on cloud nine,
- 13:55Judy Reed is a huge Buckeye fan.
- 13:58So I'm sure she's super happy.
- 14:00Amy,
- 14:00my cohost on the round table will be
- 14:02ecstatic as she is a graduate of OSU.
- 14:04Um, but yeah,
- 14:07that's what I'll have to live
- 14:08with for the next year.
- 14:10And, uh, there it is.
- 14:12Penn state just need to play better in the,
- 14:15in the final four.
- 14:17I'm wearing the burnt orange,
- 14:18even though it says good dudes, I can,
- 14:21UT needed to play just – or
- 14:23University of Texas needed
- 14:24to play just a little bit better.
- 14:25Maybe we got there,
- 14:29but Ohio put a shellacking on us.
- 14:34What's cool to me is over
- 14:35the weekend with the NFL
- 14:36games and that game,
- 14:38I was four and one on outright winners,
- 14:41and with the line, I was three and two.
- 14:47So not a bad record for the weekend.
- 14:50I didn't place a bet on any of them.
- 14:52Just picked them on the show
- 14:53to see how I do.
- 14:55But yeah,
- 14:56I'll take four and one and three
- 14:57and two over the weekend on my picks.
- 15:00Yeah.
- 15:02It would be nice if I had
- 15:04some money with that, but no.
- 15:07And then the biggest news in
- 15:08my household was the Chicago Bears-
- 15:12uncharacteristically got
- 15:14aggressive and went after
- 15:15the coach that they wanted
- 15:16as the new head coach laid
- 15:19down the money and
- 15:21hopefully this is a sign of
- 15:22change as ben johnson is
- 15:24was named the new head
- 15:25coach of the chicago bears
- 15:27uh he's in chicago today
- 15:29signing a contract and uh
- 15:31it looks like dennis allen
- 15:32will be his defensive
- 15:33coordinator which excites me a lot
- 15:37So he has an experienced
- 15:39defensive coordinator to
- 15:40come with him since this is
- 15:41his first foray into head coaching.
- 15:43But that made me extremely
- 15:45happy yesterday.
- 15:47And I think it's the start
- 15:48of Caleb Williams'
- 15:50ascension into a much better quarterback.
- 15:56I don't know a lot about him.
- 15:57I mean, I know that, you know,
- 15:59with Detroit going so far
- 16:00in the playoffs this year,
- 16:02he must have a lot to offer.
- 16:03Yeah.
- 16:09uh we're just glad dennis
- 16:11allen has gone from nola
- 16:12well you have to admit
- 16:15before he was the head
- 16:16coach he was a really good
- 16:17defensive coordinator we
- 16:20didn't hire miss head coach
- 16:22we're bringing him in as
- 16:23defensive coordinator so
- 16:28we're we're cool with that
- 16:31now go ahead sorry jay rich go ahead
- 16:35Oh, I forgot what I was going to say.
- 16:36It's all right.
- 16:41Now Corey's just trying to pick a fight.
- 16:44Kale Williams is, was,
- 16:46and will be highly overrated.
- 16:49We may not be friends anymore now.
- 16:52Oh, I remember what I was going to say.
- 16:54As far as like Detroit goes, of course,
- 16:56their head coach, Dan Campbell,
- 17:01he grew up not but about, oh,
- 17:05here in, in Hamilton.
- 17:07So even though I'm a Dallas heart,
- 17:11you know,
- 17:11through and through kind of fan
- 17:13because Dan played for the
- 17:14Cowboys and because he's a
- 17:16Texan had to root for Detroit this year.
- 17:18So.
- 17:20I wanted them to win this
- 17:23year because they've never
- 17:25been to the Superbowl.
- 17:25I just wanted somebody new.
- 17:28So, yeah, that was,
- 17:29that was not what I was
- 17:29looking for the other night when they,
- 17:32when they lost.
- 17:33So.
- 17:35Last thing I'm going to say,
- 17:36and we're going to talk
- 17:37about this much more on the
- 17:38Sunday Night CrossFit Talk.
- 17:40If you did not see the Rich
- 17:41Froning podcast yesterday,
- 17:44they talk about the Mayhem Classic a lot.
- 17:47And in there, there's kind of a leak,
- 17:51and it's been out on Dense
- 17:52Updates and Barbell Spin
- 17:55and Hiller and everybody else,
- 17:57but that there could be a
- 17:59last chance qualifier this year.
- 18:02there's like one spot left on both sides,
- 18:05the men and the women,
- 18:08and that that will go to a
- 18:10last chance qualifier.
- 18:12Carolyn has very strong
- 18:13thoughts about the fact
- 18:15that these camps know about
- 18:18these things before the athletes do.
- 18:23And so I'm going to let her
- 18:24go off on Sunday night about that.
- 18:29Well, and two aren't,
- 18:30don't they only have twenty
- 18:32male and twenty female spots
- 18:34that they're going to do
- 18:36for the semifinal so that's
- 18:41where I'm confused I
- 18:43thought it was eighteen in
- 18:46person semis twelve open
- 18:51twelve online I don't know
- 18:55what the numbers are now to
- 18:56get the last chance
- 18:56qualifier so that one has
- 18:58to come from one of them
- 19:01so I just don't know which
- 19:02one that is um yeah man I
- 19:12have this dry spot in my
- 19:13throat um larry young she
- 19:28doesn't seem pleased about
- 19:30anything going on this season.
- 19:33I think it's a lot of change
- 19:35and it's just hard to
- 19:37understand for an athlete as to,
- 19:40and it's hard to plan when
- 19:42there's all these last minute changes.
- 19:46And for someone who's trying
- 19:48to make it back to the games,
- 19:49that's really frustrating.
- 19:53Uh,
- 19:53but I'll let her speak for herself
- 19:54because she does that very well.
- 20:00So let's get into the top five.
- 20:01Top five Tuesday.
- 20:03Top TV shows of all time.
- 20:06We'll count them down from five to one.
- 20:08And then afterwards,
- 20:09if you have any honorable mentions,
- 20:10we'll talk about that.
- 20:12And I always let the guests go first.
- 20:15So these could not be sitcoms.
- 20:18These could not be half-hour shows.
- 20:20These were either series or miniseries.
- 20:26And we'll leave it at that.
- 20:29All right.
- 20:30I'll start off with Jay Birch.
- 20:31Let's go.
- 20:31All right.
- 20:33So my number five was a show
- 20:35called Mind Hunters.
- 20:39So I'm not for sure if
- 20:40you're familiar with it,
- 20:41but it was a show that... What's that?
- 20:47My wife would probably have
- 20:48that in her top five.
- 20:50And so it wasn't very long lasting,
- 20:53but it took a realistic
- 20:55look at how the...
- 20:59profiling and the FBI kind
- 21:01of started looking at
- 21:02serial killers and stuff like that.
- 21:04I, and me personally,
- 21:05I thought the acting was great.
- 21:07I mean, it wasn't real slow, you know,
- 21:10and it's, and it's development of story.
- 21:12And I mean,
- 21:13I thought it was a really good show.
- 21:14Um, and that it takes place in Pittsburgh,
- 21:18right?
- 21:20Yeah, I believe so.
- 21:20Yeah.
- 21:21See, we,
- 21:22we both grew up just North of Pittsburgh,
- 21:24so that she probably has an
- 21:26affinity for it with that
- 21:28in addition to it.
- 21:29So,
- 21:32uh kenneth says uh first
- 21:35season was great second
- 21:37season was good you know a
- 21:40lot of the shows that I had
- 21:41in my mind that I did not
- 21:43put on my list I loved like
- 21:46the beginning of and it at
- 21:48some point jumped the shark
- 21:49and that ruined it for me
- 21:51like designated survivor is
- 21:54a great example
- 21:56Season one into two was amazing,
- 22:01but season three was so bad.
- 22:03It left a horrible taste in
- 22:05my mouth and would have removed it.
- 22:08And I hope that's not on your list,
- 22:10but okay.
- 22:14So my number five is an old
- 22:15show from the eighties.
- 22:17Uh, it's a show called wise guy.
- 22:19Yeah.
- 22:21Yeah.
- 22:22And what it was, was there was,
- 22:26for lack of a better term,
- 22:27a kid named Vinnie
- 22:28Terranova who grew up in
- 22:31New Jersey and was a law
- 22:36enforcement officer that
- 22:37they made become kind of
- 22:40like a street thug.
- 22:42And he built up a reputation,
- 22:44even went to jail to set
- 22:46himself up so that he could
- 22:48go undercover and infiltrate the mob.
- 22:52And didn't he have a brother?
- 22:54His brother was a priest.
- 22:56Okay, yeah.
- 22:58Yeah,
- 22:58which complicated things a little bit.
- 23:01Right, yeah.
- 23:02Because he couldn't even
- 23:03tell his family that he was
- 23:06going undercover because he
- 23:08really lived this life to
- 23:10make it believable when he
- 23:13got pulled into the mob.
- 23:15And what was,
- 23:15I think it was on for like
- 23:17five seasons and each
- 23:18season was its own storyline.
- 23:20Mm-hmm.
- 23:22So you'd finish the season
- 23:24and then he'd be off to like the next,
- 23:27the next thing.
- 23:29One of my favorite shows of all time.
- 23:31And I've even watched it in
- 23:32the last few years and it still holds up,
- 23:35which you cannot say for every AD show.
- 23:40But it still holds up today
- 23:42and it's really good.
- 23:45Yeah.
- 23:45It's, you know, it's,
- 23:46that's whenever I made my list,
- 23:48I kind of looked at things that,
- 23:50You know,
- 23:50would I go back and rewatch them now?
- 23:53And whenever I watch them,
- 23:55does does the cinematography,
- 23:57does the action,
- 23:58is everything kind of still
- 23:59hold up or does it look cheesy?
- 24:02You know,
- 24:03and so that's wise guys probably
- 24:06the same.
- 24:07same way what helps it is
- 24:09it's not really an action
- 24:11show it's it's a
- 24:11character-driven show right
- 24:14and so that helps like the
- 24:15older show stand up because
- 24:17you're not relying on
- 24:18special effects or anything
- 24:20like that there's some
- 24:21shootouts and stuff that
- 24:23probably could be done
- 24:24better today but most for
- 24:26the most part it is a
- 24:27character-driven show so
- 24:31one of the things you're
- 24:31going to find is probably
- 24:32with my list it's
- 24:34somewhat in the forensic detective,
- 24:40you know, murder mystery kind of vein.
- 24:43And so my number four pick
- 24:45is True Detective.
- 24:49HBO series.
- 24:53Or was there one in particular?
- 24:56Season one, I really liked.
- 25:00That's the Harrelson.
- 25:02That's the Harrelson.
- 25:03Yeah.
- 25:07The one with Colin Farrell,
- 25:10it was kind of slow.
- 25:11I didn't really like that one.
- 25:13And then this last season,
- 25:15the one that was in Alaska.
- 25:20Yeah.
- 25:22I like that one.
- 25:23Okay.
- 25:26Those are weird, man.
- 25:29They're really good.
- 25:33But yeah,
- 25:33I could see why that would make
- 25:34it for some people.
- 25:35But I think that like even nationally,
- 25:42it's split.
- 25:43Like whether you either love
- 25:44it or you hate it.
- 25:47But Kenneth says my top
- 25:48season in all of TV is True
- 25:51Detective season one.
- 25:53That one was insane.
- 25:55The Woody Harrelson,
- 25:56Matthew McConaughey one.
- 25:58Man, that was so good.
- 26:03Absolutely.
- 26:06Yeah.
- 26:08Now,
- 26:09if you want to know what my other
- 26:10number four picked,
- 26:11it was probably more series
- 26:13than really kind of like
- 26:15those little vignettes.
- 26:17It would have been Mad Men.
- 26:19okay I never dove down the
- 26:21madman path um but I've
- 26:24heard it's exceptional it
- 26:26was it was really good up
- 26:29and up until the last few
- 26:31seasons I guess after you
- 26:34kind of find out that don
- 26:35draper is like not don
- 26:37draper anymore it gets kind
- 26:39of kind of weird but okay but yeah
- 26:46My number four is an Apple
- 26:49TV series called Ted Lasso.
- 26:52Okay.
- 26:56I've watched it three times
- 26:57the whole way through.
- 27:02It is one of the most endearing,
- 27:04character-driven shows ever.
- 27:07And I've talked a lot about
- 27:08the show Shrinking,
- 27:10which I don't think is old
- 27:11enough to put on this yet
- 27:12because it hasn't stood the test of time.
- 27:14But it's the same writers
- 27:17from Ted Lasso to do Shrinking.
- 27:24And so Ted Lasso is number four.
- 27:28I'm actually surprised.
- 27:29I thought it would be higher, but.
- 27:32It's not.
- 27:32So it falls in at number four,
- 27:35Jason Sudeikis.
- 27:37Amazing show.
- 27:38If you have not seen it, like you,
- 27:42you haven't watched it.
- 27:45Oh, it's so good.
- 27:47It's all about an American football,
- 27:50American football coach
- 27:51going to England to coach a soccer team.
- 27:55Okay.
- 27:55And he doesn't even know the rules,
- 27:58but he's a leader of men.
- 28:00Right.
- 28:00So they hire them in to try to,
- 28:02to get them to change things.
- 28:07All right.
- 28:08Yeah.
- 28:08I definitely need to put that on my list.
- 28:12So good.
- 28:15All right.
- 28:16So number three is the center for me.
- 28:23Another weird one.
- 28:24I know.
- 28:25but it does kind of keep
- 28:26with the same cause you've
- 28:27got Jeff Daniels kind of
- 28:28playing that same character throughout,
- 28:31but, um, the,
- 28:34the first season I really liked and well,
- 28:38actually all the seasons I
- 28:39thought flowed well in it.
- 28:44I've, I've never seen it.
- 28:45Um, I love Jeff Daniels.
- 28:50Uh, it, it's a,
- 28:52it's a murder mystery kind of thing.
- 28:53It kind of, you know, it starts out and,
- 28:55You know,
- 28:56you think it's one person and
- 28:57then he come to find out
- 28:59it's somebody else.
- 29:01I think it was produced by.
- 29:06Who's Justin Timberlake's wife.
- 29:09Okay.
- 29:12That is Blake Lively.
- 29:14No, no, no, it's not.
- 29:19Shoot.
- 29:20I know.
- 29:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:24uh, Jessica, um, Jessica Beal.
- 29:28That's it.
- 29:29There we go.
- 29:29Yeah.
- 29:32She produced it and it does
- 29:33an excellent job.
- 29:34I mean,
- 29:35I think she directs a little bit in
- 29:36it some,
- 29:37but just a well done kind of
- 29:40murder mystery series in my opinion.
- 29:46That's awesome.
- 29:47I'll have to check it out.
- 29:47Cause I love Jeff Daniels.
- 29:49Yeah.
- 29:50Um,
- 29:57Not Alba.
- 29:59Sarah.
- 30:01Could be Jessica Rabbit, Corey.
- 30:04There you go.
- 30:07My number three is also a mob show.
- 30:14Some people probably have it
- 30:15higher on the list than number three.
- 30:18My number three is The Sopranos.
- 30:26I really...
- 30:28The first couple seasons
- 30:30with the mother were some
- 30:32of the best TV ever on.
- 30:35When the mother dies,
- 30:36I think it dips a little
- 30:39bit and it takes away the
- 30:41psychiatrist piece of it.
- 30:45But still great television.
- 30:48But the first two seasons, amazing.
- 30:55I'm going to have to agree with you, Scott,
- 30:57on all points.
- 31:00all pieces of that because I
- 31:01did put the Sopranos at number two.
- 31:05That was my number two pick.
- 31:08Okay.
- 31:09And all for the same reasons that I just,
- 31:13you know, it's the only,
- 31:14the worst part about that
- 31:15entire series is the last scene.
- 31:19Oh,
- 31:19and I've watched documentaries about
- 31:21David Chase and, and kind of, you know,
- 31:24what he was going with there.
- 31:26And, you know, basically he just,
- 31:30this is how it's going to end.
- 31:31And that's the way it was.
- 31:33There was no, there's no backstory to it.
- 31:36It's just,
- 31:36that's the way you wanted to end it.
- 31:39What I've heard.
- 31:41It's up to you how you want it to end.
- 31:44Right.
- 31:44How you want it, how you interpret that.
- 31:50I did see something with
- 31:51Steve Perry from journey
- 31:53saying that he did not want
- 31:55to have a family die to his song.
- 32:01I can see that.
- 32:02Uh, Kenneth asks, uh,
- 32:09you guys watched a prequel
- 32:10movie that came out in the
- 32:11last few years.
- 32:12I did.
- 32:14I'm not a fan.
- 32:16No, I didn't.
- 32:17I didn't think it was very well done.
- 32:19Yeah.
- 32:20You don't even get to the
- 32:21characters as the Sopranos
- 32:22to the last five minutes.
- 32:24Right.
- 32:27And I mean,
- 32:27James Gandolfini son did an okay job.
- 32:31in it.
- 32:31But I mean, as far as the show itself,
- 32:35I wasn't really impressed.
- 32:38Yeah.
- 32:40Nowhere near as good as the show.
- 32:44So my number two, uh, needs a little, uh,
- 32:51So you asked me a long time
- 32:53ago when I was talking
- 32:54about Taylor Sheridan,
- 32:57if I liked him or the guy
- 32:58who did Sons of Anarchy and the Mayans.
- 33:02Okay.
- 33:05My true crush in this
- 33:09endeavor is... Kurt Sutter
- 33:10is the other guy.
- 33:11Kurt Sutter?
- 33:12Well, my crush is Aaron Sorkin.
- 33:14Okay.
- 33:17So Aaron Sorkin did four television shows.
- 33:21And he did two movies early in his career.
- 33:24Now he's done some other movies since.
- 33:27But his first two movies
- 33:28were A Few Good Men and The
- 33:30American President.
- 33:31And then he did shows The Sports Night,
- 33:34West Wing,
- 33:35Studio Sixty on the Sunset Strip,
- 33:37and Newsroom.
- 33:41Those four Aaron Sorkin shows...
- 33:44would be in my top five I
- 33:46actually binged I start
- 33:48from sports night and go to
- 33:49newsroom a couple times in
- 33:51my life and I do it every
- 33:53couple years um so number
- 33:56two I had to pick one to
- 33:58represent the whole kit and
- 34:00caboodle uh and so I picked
- 34:02west wing it was the
- 34:05longest running series
- 34:07And what I loved about the
- 34:09show is each show was
- 34:12independent of the other,
- 34:13other than like a little
- 34:15string to kind of get you
- 34:16from place to place.
- 34:18And I work in government and
- 34:21they were inept that cast.
- 34:23They,
- 34:24they never got anything accomplished
- 34:26while he was in office.
- 34:29They would run into hurdle
- 34:30after hurdle after hurdle
- 34:31and try to overcome them.
- 34:33And it,
- 34:33I felt like it was more realistic than,
- 34:36than a government that
- 34:38actually would get stuff
- 34:39done if that makes sense
- 34:43right yeah and so uh I'm
- 34:46I'm going with west wing as
- 34:48my number two awesome I can
- 34:52I can see that yeah aaron's
- 34:54working definitely good tv
- 34:59Well,
- 34:59my number one is a bit of a sentiment.
- 35:02Jody Lynn has never seen The Sopranos,
- 35:05has never seen West Wing.
- 35:08I know.
- 35:10She's so sheltered.
- 35:11I know.
- 35:14Upstate New York, man,
- 35:15they just don't get into that stuff.
- 35:17No,
- 35:17they're all out looking at the leaves
- 35:19changing.
- 35:20I don't know what's going on up there.
- 35:22Building cabinets.
- 35:24Yeah, building cabinets,
- 35:26putting in new kitchens.
- 35:28Building cabins.
- 35:29Yeah.
- 35:32All right.
- 35:33So number one.
- 35:35So my number one pick is a
- 35:37show from the eighties.
- 35:41I think it's probably one of
- 35:42the most nostalgic and one
- 35:44of the movies that are
- 35:46series that I probably play
- 35:47more than any other.
- 35:51I know it almost word for word,
- 35:53as far as the script goes,
- 35:55I've seen it so many times.
- 35:56And that's Lonesome Dove.
- 36:01Being a young man growing up on a ranch,
- 36:05having that is kind of, you know,
- 36:09in my past.
- 36:11Also, I have a cousin who,
- 36:14he's a second cousin who's
- 36:16a Western author.
- 36:17His name's Elmer Kelton.
- 36:20He kind of, you know,
- 36:23put me onto that genre of
- 36:25of a Western as well, which is more, um,
- 36:30kind of that true epic sense of,
- 36:33of a Western.
- 36:35And, um, I,
- 36:36I just think it's probably one
- 36:37of the best written shows ever.
- 36:43So I've seen it, but I will tell you,
- 36:47I have a natural distaste for Westerns.
- 36:52that's fine it's because my
- 36:56mom watched every western
- 36:59known to man yeah like I've
- 37:01seen the sackets and I've
- 37:03seen lonesome dove and I've
- 37:05seen um every episode of
- 37:08bonanza and I've seen like
- 37:10she watched all of those
- 37:11gun smoke I've seen every
- 37:13episode of gun smoke
- 37:15So I was so inundated with
- 37:18it that when I got to choose my own shows,
- 37:22it was not that.
- 37:23I totally understand.
- 37:28Jody says, never saw that either.
- 37:31And she says, I'm in Connecticut, Scott.
- 37:34Upstate New York, Connecticut,
- 37:35Rhode Island, Vermont,
- 37:37that's all the same.
- 37:39It's all where the leaves
- 37:40are pretty and you get good ice cream,
- 37:43right?
- 37:44One of those wee little states.
- 37:45Those small ones, you know.
- 37:47Yeah.
- 37:51I'm just kidding.
- 37:52Connecticut's awesome.
- 37:53I always thought I'd love to go up there.
- 37:58My number one,
- 38:00because my first love is crime.
- 38:04Crime drama.
- 38:07And you can tell by my mob stuff.
- 38:12and the the the show that
- 38:14did it better than anybody
- 38:16else was nypd blue okay
- 38:21yeah I thought I actually
- 38:22thought about that one
- 38:25because I love that show um
- 38:28andy sipowitz uh he would
- 38:33like that that show
- 38:35when you see the stresses of
- 38:37what being a cop every day
- 38:39put on these men and the
- 38:41struggles they went through
- 38:42because of it.
- 38:44And they depicted it in a
- 38:46real sense for the first
- 38:47time before that it was
- 38:50dragnets and at twelves and,
- 38:54and everything was rosy and,
- 38:56and peachy for cops.
- 38:58And,
- 38:58and this was like the first time it got,
- 39:01it got gritty and,
- 39:03For a cop.
- 39:04Right.
- 39:04And what they had to do.
- 39:06And that sometimes you have
- 39:07to take a telephone book
- 39:09and just go upside a
- 39:11criminal's head and to get
- 39:13them to tell you what he
- 39:14needs to tell you.
- 39:16Right.
- 39:17Yep.
- 39:18So, um, I, I actually,
- 39:21I forget what's on DVD.
- 39:24I forget what the police
- 39:25sergeant was in there.
- 39:26Kind of a big burly bald headed guy.
- 39:29But I remember one scene
- 39:31where he just got so frustrated,
- 39:32like snapped his chair to a
- 39:35million little pieces.
- 39:37Yeah, it's good.
- 39:38It's good.
- 39:40Yeah.
- 39:43I'm glad there was no mention of friends.
- 39:45Kenneth,
- 39:45did you not listen out the top
- 39:47where we said no sitcoms?
- 39:50No sitcoms allowed in this list.
- 39:53This was just like hour-long dramas.
- 40:00I may have to do another one
- 40:01with someone else where we
- 40:02actually do sitcoms.
- 40:03Yeah.
- 40:05But this one was just, and you know, I'm,
- 40:11and I, I, I,
- 40:13I should have had breaking
- 40:14bad on my list.
- 40:16I don't know why I forgot it completely.
- 40:19Cause Kenneth had it in there.
- 40:20It would not, it would not be number one,
- 40:22but it would be up there.
- 40:23Wise guy would probably fall off.
- 40:26And I might even put it above Sopranos.
- 40:31I had breaking bad as a,
- 40:33as another number two, but, um,
- 40:36here's the thing about
- 40:37breaking bad as a chemistry teacher.
- 40:39If I had one comment,
- 40:41I had a million comments about,
- 40:44so Mr. Birchfield,
- 40:45are you like Heisenberg?
- 40:46Can you make meth?
- 40:50That would get old real quick.
- 40:53Yeah.
- 40:54Yeah.
- 40:54I would,
- 40:55I would move breaking bad up to
- 40:56number three.
- 40:58Yeah.
- 40:59I did have one honorable
- 41:00mention in addition to the five I had,
- 41:03and I would put better call
- 41:04Saul pretty close to the top five,
- 41:06maybe not in the top five.
- 41:10Um,
- 41:10but one honorable mention is Friday
- 41:13night lights.
- 41:14Okay.
- 41:15I thought,
- 41:16I thought that television
- 41:17television series was
- 41:18better than the movie.
- 41:20And I thought that they did
- 41:21a really good job, uh, depicting, uh,
- 41:26family life and uh kids
- 41:29problems in high school um
- 41:31I thought they did a really
- 41:32good job with that just
- 41:34kind of around a football
- 41:35team um but it was never
- 41:37really about the football
- 41:39team interesting factoid
- 41:41they filmed that in the
- 41:43same town I was teaching at
- 41:45and some of the footage of
- 41:46the football field was
- 41:47actually the football field
- 41:48of the school where I taught and
- 41:52the Dylan football team or
- 41:54would it have been like
- 41:55some of the others?
- 41:58Uh, yeah,
- 41:58I guess it would have been Dylan.
- 41:59I've been one with the P the
- 42:01it's supposed to be the Permian.
- 42:03Yeah.
- 42:05Yeah.
- 42:07Cause none of that was filmed in Odessa.
- 42:10Uh, Jody Lynn,
- 42:10I'll never go to a car wash
- 42:12and not think of money laundering again.
- 42:19Do you add an honorable mention too,
- 42:20right?
- 42:21Or even like an alternate list?
- 42:24I had an alternate list.
- 42:27And so my alternate list,
- 42:28I'll just run through them right quick,
- 42:30was number five, The Wire, number four,
- 42:33Mad Men, three, Game of Thrones, two,
- 42:36Breaking Bad, and then number one,
- 42:38Sopranos.
- 42:38Okay.
- 42:42I've never seen Game of Thrones.
- 42:44Oh.
- 42:45I've tried.
- 42:47I've tried.
- 42:48But if you don't like that
- 42:50kind of fantasy genre of stuff,
- 42:58maybe hard to get into.
- 43:00I put myself in moral
- 43:01dilemma so many times.
- 43:03It took me three watchings
- 43:05to get into The Sopranos
- 43:08before my morals would let
- 43:10me get into The Sopranos.
- 43:13Game of Thrones...
- 43:15the first couple of episodes,
- 43:16I could not get past the
- 43:17first couple episodes.
- 43:18I just, well, you know, you know, um,
- 43:22outlander,
- 43:22that's one of my wife's favorite shows.
- 43:25I call it Scottish, whatever, but, um,
- 43:30once you kind of get past that,
- 43:32it really does have a good storyline too.
- 43:36And it's kind of,
- 43:37kind of interesting how they transvert,
- 43:40you know,
- 43:40traverse their way through history.
- 43:43Well, no,
- 43:44and I'm glad I got through
- 43:45Sopranos to actually see it all through.
- 43:49But sometimes I hit these
- 43:52things in my head and I've
- 43:53got to reconcile it before I can move on.
- 43:56Yeah.
- 43:58Kenneth says Lost was great for me.
- 44:00That's another one that the
- 44:02first three seasons were fantastic.
- 44:06The last two seasons, meh.
- 44:09And I think the last two
- 44:10seasons ruined it for me.
- 44:13to where I just couldn't.
- 44:17It's a great show, but not top five.
- 44:25No sitcoms is the only role.
- 44:27That is correct, Corey.
- 44:34Good thing you didn't have
- 44:36me on this show on this topic.
- 44:38I've never seen ninety
- 44:38percent of these shows.
- 44:41Yeah.
- 44:41Well, Jody,
- 44:42you could have made your own list,
- 44:43and then we could see what
- 44:44you are watching.
- 44:47Right.
- 44:48Right.
- 44:51We'll get you on for something, Jody.
- 44:52We just got to find the right topic.
- 44:58I have been called a yuppie before,
- 45:00but just not recently.
- 45:05So...
- 45:07with lonesome dove and the curly mustache.
- 45:11And do you take some of your look from,
- 45:13from that show?
- 45:15Or, um,
- 45:17I don't really take it from the show.
- 45:18I take it from, you know, the,
- 45:21the culture that I kind of grew up in.
- 45:23Okay.
- 45:25Because where I live is a
- 45:28lot of ranches and stuff.
- 45:29And my grandparents had an
- 45:30eight hundred acre ranch
- 45:32here in Hamilton that I
- 45:34pretty much grew up on.
- 45:35Um,
- 45:36I used to ride rope a little bit,
- 45:40work cows all the time.
- 45:42And before I became a teacher,
- 45:45Stephenville,
- 45:45which is supposed to be the
- 45:46cowboy capital of the world,
- 45:48is where I went to college.
- 45:50But I used to do work with
- 45:54cattle and stuff like that over there.
- 45:56So it's just kind of part of my culture.
- 46:02So my last question is,
- 46:04have you seen Yellowstone?
- 46:07Have I seen the show Yellowstone?
- 46:08Yeah, I've seen all of it.
- 46:09Okay.
- 46:11So you have Lonesome Dove as number one.
- 46:13Yellowstone didn't make your list.
- 46:20Do you like the way
- 46:21Yellowstone went with it or not?
- 46:26Because I'm so close to the
- 46:28way that that world works.
- 46:33It's kind of like Landman too,
- 46:35because I've had family
- 46:36that's worked in the oil field too.
- 46:40It's one of those things
- 46:41that I have to just kind of
- 46:43shut off what I know and
- 46:45just look at it for entertainment.
- 46:47Gotcha.
- 46:49And so I would say that
- 46:53Yellowstone's good entertainment.
- 46:57So is Lonesome Dove,
- 46:58but it's just different to me.
- 47:00I put them in different boxes.
- 47:07Okay, cool.
- 47:10Kenneth says,
- 47:11Jay Birch is basically ripped
- 47:12from Yellowstone.
- 47:16I've been compared to worse.
- 47:17I'd take that, Jay Birch.
- 47:18Yeah, yeah.
- 47:20Corey going for his top five.
- 47:21Doctor Who, Top Gear, Strike Back,
- 47:24The Mandalorian, working on a fifth.
- 47:28Man, you're into the sci-fi.
- 47:29Yeah.
- 47:30I'm all about The Mandalorian, too.
- 47:35I love the Mandalorian.
- 47:37I think I just naturally
- 47:38like there's so many star
- 47:41Wars fanatics in my family.
- 47:43Like I don't, I'm,
- 47:44I always say that I'm a
- 47:46bigger Indiana Jones fan than star Wars.
- 47:48And so I like push back on
- 47:51the star Wars stuff sometimes,
- 47:53but the Mandalorian was great.
- 47:55Yeah.
- 47:59Um, I've never seen Dr. Who.
- 48:03I remember the old Doctor
- 48:05Who that used to be on PBS.
- 48:12Well, this was fun.
- 48:14Yeah.
- 48:15But it is time to get back to work.
- 48:17Lunch hour is over.
- 48:21With that, guys,
- 48:22thank you so much for being here.
- 48:24Drop your top five shows into the comments,
- 48:28and we'll take a look at
- 48:29those maybe throughout the week.
- 48:31I want to thank Jay Birch
- 48:32for being here again.
- 48:34What an awesome dude.
- 48:36So good to get to know you better.
- 48:38And maybe we'll have you
- 48:39back for another top five
- 48:41on another Tuesday.
- 48:41You bet.
- 48:44Thank you, brother.
- 48:45All right, man.
- 48:45With that,
- 48:46we'll see everybody next time on
- 48:48Lunch with the Kiesdale.
- 48:49Bye, guys.
