- 0:00Speaker 1: Things new and old. While Christ was teaching the people,
- 0:04Speaker 1: he was also educating his disciples for their future work.
- 0:08Speaker 1: In all his instruction there were lessons for them. After
- 0:12Speaker 1: giving the parable of the net, he asked them, had
- 0:15Speaker 1: he understood all these things they set unto him, yea Lord.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Then in another parable he set before them their responsibility
- 0:24Speaker 1: in regard to the truths they had received. Therefore, he said,
- 0:29Speaker 1: every scribe which is instructed into the Kingdom of Heaven
- 0:32Speaker 1: is like unto a man, that is, an householder, which
- 0:35Speaker 1: bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.
- 0:40Speaker 1: The treasure gained by the householder, he does not hoard,
- 0:43Speaker 1: but brings it forth to communicate to others, and by
- 0:46Speaker 1: use the treasure increases. The householder has precious things, both
- 0:50Speaker 1: new and old. So Christ teaches that the truth committed
- 0:54Speaker 1: to his disciples is to be communicated to the world, and.
- 0:58Speaker 2: As the knowledge of truth is imparted, it will increase.
- 1:02Speaker 2: All who receive the gospel message into the heart will
- 1:05Speaker 2: long to proclaim it. The heaven born love of Christ
- 1:09Speaker 2: must find expression. Those who have put on Christ will
- 1:12Speaker 2: relate their experience, tracing step by step the leadings of
- 1:16Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit. Their hungering and thirsting for the knowledge
- 1:20Speaker 2: of God and of Jesus Christ, whom he has sent.
- 1:23Speaker 2: The result of their searching of the scriptures, their prayers,
- 1:26Speaker 2: their soul agony, and the words of Christ to them,
- 1:30Speaker 2: thy sins be forgiven thee.
- 1:33Speaker 1: It is unnatural for any to keep these things secret,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and those who are filled with the love of Christ
- 1:38Speaker 1: will not do so. In proportion as the Lord has
- 1:41Speaker 1: made them the depositaries of sacred truth will be their
- 1:44Speaker 1: desire that others shall receive the same blessing. And as
- 1:48Speaker 1: they make known the rich treasures of God's grace, more
- 1:52Speaker 1: and still more of the grace of Christ will be
- 1:54Speaker 1: imparted to them. They will have the heart of a
- 1:56Speaker 1: little child in its simplicity and unreserved obedien Their souls
- 2:01Speaker 1: will pant after holiness, and more and more of treasures
- 2:04Speaker 1: of truth and grace will be revealed to them to
- 2:07Speaker 1: be given to the world. The great storehouse of truth
- 2:10Speaker 1: is the Word of God, the written Word, the book
- 2:12Speaker 1: of Nature, and the book of experience. In God's dealing
- 2:15Speaker 1: with human life, here are the treasures from which Christ's
- 2:19Speaker 1: workers are to draw in the search after truth. They
- 2:22Speaker 1: are to depend upon God not upon human intelligences, the
- 2:26Speaker 1: great men whose wisdom is foolishness. With God through his
- 2:29Speaker 1: own appointed channels, the Lord will impart a knowledge of
- 2:32Speaker 1: himself to every seeker. If the follower of Christ will
- 2:36Speaker 1: believe his word and practice it. There is no science
- 2:39Speaker 1: in the natural world that he will not be able
- 2:41Speaker 1: to grasp and appreciate. There is nothing but that will
- 2:44Speaker 1: furnish him means for imparting the truth to others. Natural
- 2:49Speaker 1: science is a treasure house of knowledge from which every
- 2:52Speaker 1: student in the School of Christ may draw. As we
- 2:55Speaker 1: contemplate the beauty of nature, as we study its lessons
- 2:58Speaker 1: in the cultivation of this way, and the growth of
- 3:01Speaker 1: the trees, and all the wonders of earth and sea
- 3:03Speaker 1: and sky, there will come to us a new perception
- 3:06Speaker 1: of truth and the mysteries connected with God's dealings with men,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and the depths of His wisdom and judgment as seen
- 3:13Speaker 1: in human life. These are found to be a storehouse
- 3:16Speaker 1: rich in treasure. But it is in the written word
- 3:18Speaker 1: that a knowledge of God is most clearly revealed to
- 3:21Speaker 1: fallen man. This is the treasure house of the unsarchable
- 3:24Speaker 1: riches of Christ. The Word of God includes the Scripture
- 3:28Speaker 1: of the Old Testament as well as of the New One,
- 3:31Speaker 1: is not complete without the other. Christ declared that the
- 3:34Speaker 1: truths of the Old Testament are as valuable as those
- 3:37Speaker 1: of the New. Christ was as much man's redeemer in
- 3:40Speaker 1: the beginning of the world as he is to day.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Before he clothed his divinity with humanity and came to
- 3:46Speaker 1: our world. The Gospel message was given by Adam, Seth, Enoch,
- 3:51Speaker 1: Methuselah and Noah, Abraham and Canaan and La and Sodom
- 3:55Speaker 1: for the message, and from generation to generation faithful messengers
- 4:00Speaker 1: claimed the coming One. The rights of the Jewish economy
- 4:03Speaker 1: were instituted by Christ himself. He was the foundation of
- 4:06Speaker 1: their system of sacrificial offerings, the great antetype of all
- 4:10Speaker 1: their religious service. The blood shed as the sacrifices were offered,
- 4:14Speaker 1: pointed to the sacrifice of the Lamb of God. All
- 4:17Speaker 1: the typical offerings were fulfilled in him. Christ is manifested
- 4:22Speaker 1: to the patriarchs, as symbolized in the sacrificial service, as
- 4:26Speaker 1: portrayed in the Law, and as revealed by the prophet,
- 4:29Speaker 1: is the riches of the Old Testament. Christ in his life,
- 4:33Speaker 1: his death, and his resurrection Christ, as he is manifested
- 4:37Speaker 1: by the Holy Spirit, is the treasure of the New Testament.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Our Savior, the outshining of the Father's glory, is both
- 4:44Speaker 1: the old and the new of Christ's life and death
- 4:48Speaker 1: and intercession which prophets had foretold. The apostles were to
- 4:52Speaker 1: go forth as witnesses Christ in his humiliation, in his
- 4:56Speaker 1: purity and holiness, in his matchless love was to to
- 5:00Speaker 1: be their theme. And in order to preach the Gospel
- 5:03Speaker 1: in its fullness, they must present the Savior not only
- 5:06Speaker 1: as revealed in his life and teachings, but as foretold
- 5:09Speaker 1: by the prophets of the Old Testament, and is symbolized
- 5:12Speaker 1: by the sacrificial service. Christ and his teaching presented old
- 5:16Speaker 1: truths of which he himself was the originator, truths which
- 5:20Speaker 1: he had spoken through patriarchs and prophets. But he now
- 5:23Speaker 1: shed upon them a new light. How different appeared their meaning.
- 5:27Speaker 1: A flood of light and spirituality was brought in by
- 5:30Speaker 1: his explanation, and he promised that the Holy Spirit should
- 5:33Speaker 1: enlighten the disciples, that the Word of God should be
- 5:36Speaker 1: ever unfolding to them. They would be able to present
- 5:39Speaker 1: its truths and new beauty ever since the first promise
- 5:43Speaker 1: of redemption was spoken in Edin, the life, the character,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and the mediatorial work of Christ have been the study
- 5:50Speaker 1: of human minds. Yet every mind through whom the Holy
- 5:53Speaker 1: Spirit has worked has presented these themes in a light
- 5:56Speaker 1: that is fresh and new. The truths of redemption are
- 5:59Speaker 1: capable a constant development and expansion. Though old, they are
- 6:04Speaker 1: ever new, constantly revealing to the seeker for truth a
- 6:07Speaker 1: greater glory and a mightier power. In every age there
- 6:10Speaker 1: is a new development of truth, a message of God
- 6:13Speaker 1: to the people of that generation. The old truths are
- 6:16Speaker 1: all essential. New truth is not independent of the old,
- 6:20Speaker 1: but in the unfolding of it. It is only as
- 6:22Speaker 1: the old truths are understood that we can comprehend the new.
- 6:26Speaker 1: When Christ desired to open to his disciples the truth
- 6:29Speaker 1: of his resurrection, he began as Moses and all the prophets,
- 6:34Speaker 1: and expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things
- 6:37Speaker 1: concerning himself. But it is the light which shines in
- 6:42Speaker 1: the fresh unfolding of truth that glorifies the old. He
- 6:45Speaker 1: who rejects or neglects the new does not really possess
- 6:49Speaker 1: the old. For him, it loses its vital power and
- 6:52Speaker 1: becomes but a lifeless form. There are those who profess
- 6:55Speaker 1: to believe and to teach the truths of the Old Testament,
- 6:58Speaker 1: while they reject the names. But in refusing to receive
- 7:02Speaker 1: the teachings of Christ, they show that they do not
- 7:04Speaker 1: believe that which patriarchs and prophets have spoken. Had ye
- 7:08Speaker 1: believed Moses, Christ said, you would have believed me, for
- 7:12Speaker 1: he wrote of me. Hence there is no real power
- 7:15Speaker 1: in their teaching of even the Old Testament. Many who
- 7:18Speaker 1: claim to believe and to teach the Gospel are in
- 7:20Speaker 1: a similar error. They set aside the Old Testament scriptures
- 7:24Speaker 1: of which Christ declared. They are they which testify of Me.
- 7:29Speaker 1: In rejecting the Old, they virtually reject the New. For
- 7:32Speaker 1: both are parts of an inseparable world. No man can
- 7:35Speaker 1: rightly present the Law of God without the Gospel, or
- 7:38Speaker 1: the Gospel without the Law. The Law is the Gospel embodied,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and the Gospel is the Law unfolded. The Law is
- 7:45Speaker 1: the root, the Gospel is the fragrant blossom and fruit
- 7:49Speaker 1: which it bears. The Old Testament sheds light upon the New,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and the New upon the old. Each is a revelation
- 7:55Speaker 1: of the glory of God in Christ. Both present a
- 7:58Speaker 1: truth that will continually reveal new depths of meaning to
- 8:01Speaker 1: the earnest seeker. Truth in Christ and through Christ is measureless.
- 8:05Speaker 1: The student of Scripture looks, as it were, into a
- 8:08Speaker 1: fountain that deepens and broadens as he gazes into its depths.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Not in this life shall we comprehend the mystery of
- 8:14Speaker 1: God's love in giving his son to be the propitiation
- 8:18Speaker 1: for our sins. The work of our redeemer on this
- 8:21Speaker 1: earth is and ever will be, the subject that will
- 8:24Speaker 1: put to the stretch our highest imagination. Man may tax
- 8:28Speaker 1: every mental power and endeavor to fathom this mystery, that
- 8:31Speaker 1: his mind will become faint and weary. The most diligent
- 8:35Speaker 1: searcher will see before him a boundless, shoreless sea. The
- 8:39Speaker 1: truth as it is in Jesus can be experienced, but
- 8:41Speaker 1: never explained. Its height and breadth and death pass our knowledge.
- 8:46Speaker 2: We may task our imagination to the utmost, and then
- 8:49Speaker 2: we shall only see dimly the outlines of a love
- 8:52Speaker 2: that is unexplainable, that is as high as heaven, but
- 8:56Speaker 2: that stooped to the earth to stamp the image of
- 8:59Speaker 2: God on all mankind.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yet it is possible for us to see all that
- 9:03Speaker 1: we can bear of the divine compassion. This is unfolded
- 9:07Speaker 1: to the humble contrite soul. We shall understand God's compassion
- 9:11Speaker 1: just in proportion as we appreciate His sacrifice for us.
- 9:15Speaker 1: As we search the word of God in humility of heart,
- 9:18Speaker 1: the grand theme of redemption will open to our research.
- 9:21Speaker 1: It will increase in brightness as we behold it, and
- 9:24Speaker 1: as we aspired to grasp it. Its height and depth
- 9:27Speaker 1: will ever increase. Our life is to be bound up
- 9:30Speaker 1: with the life of Christ. We are to draw constantly
- 9:33Speaker 1: from Him, partaking of him the living bread that came
- 9:36Speaker 1: down from Heaven, drawing from a fountain of ever, fresh
- 9:39Speaker 1: ever giving forth its abundant treasures.
- 9:43Speaker 2: If we keep the Lord ever before us, allowing our
- 9:46Speaker 2: hearts to go out in thanksgiving and praise to Him,
- 9:49Speaker 2: we shall have a continual freshness of our religious life.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Our prayers will take the form of a conversation with God,
- 9:56Speaker 1: as we would talk with a friend. He will speak
- 9:58Speaker 1: his mysteries to us per pers. Often there will come
- 10:02Speaker 1: to us a sweet, joyful sense of the presence of Jesus.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Often our hearts will burn within us as He draws
- 10:08Speaker 2: nigh to commune with us as he did with Enoch.
- 10:12Speaker 2: When this is in truth the experience of the Christian,
- 10:15Speaker 2: there is seen in his life simplicity, a humility, meekness,
- 10:21Speaker 2: and lowliness of heart that show to all with whom
- 10:24Speaker 2: he associates that he has been with Jesus and.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Learned of him, and those who possess it. The religion
- 10:30Speaker 1: of Christ will reveal itself as a vitalizing, pervading principle,
- 10:35Speaker 1: a living, working, spiritual energy. There will be manifest the
- 10:39Speaker 1: freshness and power of joyousness, of perpetual youth. The heart
- 10:43Speaker 1: that receives the word of God is not as a
- 10:46Speaker 1: pool that evaporates, not like a broken cistern that loses
- 10:49Speaker 1: its treasure. It is like the mountain stream fed by
- 10:52Speaker 1: unfailing springs, whose cool, sparkling waters leap from rock to rock,
- 10:57Speaker 1: refreshing the weary, the thirsty, the heavy lands him. This
- 11:01Speaker 1: experience gives every teacher of truth the very qualifications that
- 11:04Speaker 1: will make him a representative of Christ. The spirit of
- 11:08Speaker 1: Christ's teachings will give a force and directness to his
- 11:11Speaker 1: communications and to his prayers.
- 11:14Speaker 2: His witness to Christ will not be a narrow, lifeless testimony.
- 11:18Speaker 2: The minister will not preach over and over the same
- 11:21Speaker 2: set of discourses. His mind will be open to the
- 11:24Speaker 2: constant illumination of the Holy Spirit.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Christ said, whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood
- 11:31Speaker 1: hath eternal life, as the Living Father hath sent me.
- 11:34Speaker 1: And I live by the Father. So he that eateth me,
- 11:37Speaker 1: even he shall live by me. It is the spirit
- 11:40Speaker 1: that quickeneth the words that I speak unto you. They
- 11:43Speaker 1: are spirit, and they are life. When we eat Christ's
- 11:47Speaker 1: flesh and drink his blood, the element of eternal life
- 11:49Speaker 1: will be found in the ministry.
- 11:51Speaker 2: There will not be a fund of stale, oft repeated ideas.
- 11:56Speaker 1: The tame, dull sermonizing will cease. The old truths will
- 11:59Speaker 1: be presented, but they will be seen in a new light.
- 12:03Speaker 1: There will be a new perception of truth, a clearness
- 12:06Speaker 1: and a power that all will discern. Those who have
- 12:09Speaker 1: the privilege of sitting under such a ministry will, if
- 12:12Speaker 1: susceptible to the Holy Spirit's influence, feel the energizing power
- 12:16Speaker 1: of a new life. The fire of God's love will
- 12:19Speaker 1: be kindred within them. The perceptive faculties will be quickened
- 12:24Speaker 1: to discern the beauty and majesty of truth. The faithful
- 12:27Speaker 1: householder represents what every teacher of the children and youth
- 12:30Speaker 1: should be. If he makes the world of God his treasure,
- 12:34Speaker 1: he will continually bring forth new beauty and new truth.
- 12:38Speaker 1: When the teacher will rely upon God in prayer, the
- 12:41Speaker 1: Spirit of Christ will come upon him, and God will
- 12:44Speaker 1: work through him by the Holy Spirit upon the minds
- 12:47Speaker 1: of others. The spirit fills the mind and heart with
- 12:50Speaker 1: sweet hope and courage and Bible imagery, and.
- 12:53Speaker 2: All this will be communicated to the youth under his instruction.
- 12:58Speaker 2: The springs of heavenly peace and joy, unsealed in the
- 13:01Speaker 2: soul of the teacher by the words of inspiration, will
- 13:05Speaker 2: become a mighty river of influence to bless all who
- 13:08Speaker 2: connect with him.
- 13:09Speaker 1: The Bible will not become a tiresome book to the student.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Under a wise instructor, the Word will become more and
- 13:15Speaker 1: more desirable. It will be as the bread of life
- 13:19Speaker 1: and will never grow old. Its freshness and beauty will
- 13:22Speaker 1: attract and charm the children and youth. It is like
- 13:25Speaker 1: the sun shining upon the earth, perpetually imparting brightness and warmth,
- 13:29Speaker 1: yet never exhausted. God's Holy educating Spirit is in his
- 13:34Speaker 1: word a light. A new and precious light shines forth
- 13:38Speaker 1: from every page. Truth is there revealed in words and
- 13:41Speaker 1: sentences are made bright and appropriate for the occasion. As
- 13:45Speaker 1: the voice of God speaking to the soul. The Holy
- 13:48Speaker 1: Spirit loves to address the youth and to discover to
- 13:51Speaker 1: them the treasures and beauty of God's word. The promises
- 13:54Speaker 1: spoken by the Great Teacher will captivate the senses and
- 13:57Speaker 1: animate the soul with the spiritual power that is divine.
- 14:01Speaker 1: There will grow in the fruitful mind of familiarity with
- 14:05Speaker 1: the divine things that will be as a barricade against temptation.
- 14:09Speaker 1: The words of truth will grow in importance and assume
- 14:12Speaker 1: a breadth and fullness of meaning of which we have
- 14:14Speaker 1: never dreamed. The beauty and riches of the world have
- 14:18Speaker 1: a transforming influence on mind and character.
- 14:21Speaker 2: The light of heavenly love will fall upon the heart
- 14:24Speaker 2: as an inspiration.
- 14:26Speaker 1: The appreciation of the Bible grows with its study. Whichever
- 14:30Speaker 1: way the student may turn, he will find displayed the
- 14:33Speaker 1: infinite wisdom and love of God. The significance of the
- 14:37Speaker 1: Jewish economy is not yet fully comprehended. Truths vast and
- 14:41Speaker 1: profound are shadowed forth in its rights and symbols. The
- 14:44Speaker 1: Gospel is the key that unlocks its mysteries. Through a
- 14:48Speaker 1: knowledge of the plan of redemption, Its truths are open
- 14:51Speaker 1: to the understanding far more than we do. It is
- 14:54Speaker 1: our privilege to understand these wonderful things. We are to
- 14:58Speaker 1: comprehend the deep things of God. Angels desire to look
- 15:01Speaker 1: into the truths that are revealed to the people, who
- 15:04Speaker 1: with contrite hearts are searching the word of God and
- 15:07Speaker 1: praying for greater lengths and breadths, and depths and heights
- 15:10Speaker 1: of knowledge which Ye alone can give. As we near
- 15:14Speaker 1: the close of this world's history, the prophecies relating to
- 15:17Speaker 1: the last days especially demand our study. The last book
- 15:20Speaker 1: of the New Testament, Scriptures, is full of truth that
- 15:23Speaker 1: we need to understand. Satan has blinded the minds of money,
- 15:27Speaker 1: so that they have been glad of any excuse for
- 15:30Speaker 1: not making the revelation their study. But Christ, through his
- 15:33Speaker 1: servant John, has been declared what shall be in the
- 15:36Speaker 1: last days, And he says, blessed is he that readeth,
- 15:40Speaker 1: and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and
- 15:43Speaker 1: keep those things which are written therein This is life eternal.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Christ said that they may know thee and only True
- 15:51Speaker 1: God and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. Why is
- 15:55Speaker 1: it that we do not realize the value of this knowledge?
- 15:59Speaker 1: Why are not these glorious truths glowing in our heart,
- 16:02Speaker 1: trembling upon our lips, and pervading our whole being, and
- 16:06Speaker 1: giving us His word. God has put us in possession
- 16:09Speaker 1: of every truth essential for our salvation. Thousands have drawn
- 16:13Speaker 1: water from these wells of life, yet there is no
- 16:16Speaker 1: diminishing of the supply. Thousands have set the Lord before them,
- 16:20Speaker 1: and by beholding have been changed into the same image.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Their spirit burns within them as they speak of His character,
- 16:27Speaker 1: telling what Christ is to them and what they are
- 16:29Speaker 1: to Christ. But these searchers have not exhausted these grand
- 16:33Speaker 1: and holy themes. Thousands more may engage in the work
- 16:37Speaker 1: of searching out the mysteries of salvation. As the life
- 16:40Speaker 1: of Christ and the character of His mission are dwell upon,
- 16:43Speaker 1: rays of light will shine forth more distinctly at every
- 16:46Speaker 1: attempt to discover truth. Each fresh search will reveal something
- 16:50Speaker 1: more deeply interesting than has yet been unfolded. The subject
- 16:55Speaker 1: is inexhaustible. The study of the incarnation of Christ is
- 16:59Speaker 1: a toning sacrifice, and the mediatorial work will employ the
- 17:03Speaker 1: mind of the diligent student as long as time shall last,
- 17:07Speaker 1: and looking to Heaven with its odd numbered years, he
- 17:10Speaker 1: will exclaim, great is the mystery of Godliness, an eternity.
- 17:15Speaker 1: We shall learn that which, had we received the enlightenment
- 17:18Speaker 1: it was possible to obtain here, would have opened our understanding.
- 17:23Speaker 1: The themes of redemption will employ the hearts and minds
- 17:26Speaker 1: and tongues of the redeemed through the everlasting ages. They
- 17:30Speaker 1: will understand the truths which Christ longed to open to
- 17:33Speaker 1: his disciples, but which they did not have faith to grasp.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Forever and forever, new views of the perfection and glory
- 17:40Speaker 1: of Christ will appear through the endless ages. Will the
- 17:43Speaker 1: faithless householder bring forth from his treasure things new and old.
- 17:49Speaker 1: End of Chapter eleven.
