- 2:07just letting you know because there's been a lot of things floating around social media
- 2:09already it's April fools Day. But I'm gonna try to avoid all that on
- 2:14the show today. All Right, I don't play those games. Actually I
- 2:17do, but just not go do it on the show. A little bit
- 2:20later on today, the chief of staff for Mayor Goodwin, Matt Sutton's going
- 2:23to be stopping by the studio. You got questions or comments or concerns anything
- 2:27related to Cidney Charleston, here's a chance to call in or to text them

- 2:35That's coming up a little bit later on with Steven Allen Adams from a good
- 2:38newspapers will be stopping by later on too. I'm kind of interested to get
- 2:40Steven's take on the recent legislative session just ended a few weeks ago. Plus
- 2:46it's getting downright nasty in the race for Republican nomination for governor. Some real
- 2:53shots are being fired now, mainly as of laid against Attorney General Patrick Morrissey.
- 2:57I'm going to get into that with Stephen coming up a little bit later

- 3:10now, candidate for Magistrate and District eleven, Harry Carpenter, Good morning,
- 3:15sir, Welcome to the show. Hey Dave, good to be here.
- 3:16Thank you for being here, sir. So how do these old district things
- 3:20work in Kanawa County anyway? Well, a few years ago, when I
- 3:25first wanted to run from magistrate, they just threw all the names in one
- 3:30hat. Top ten survived. It's like a tournament. Yeah, so a
- 3:36few years ago, i think two elections ago, the state changed that and
- 3:44now they have They had ten districts. Now with the edition of three,
- 3:52we'll have thirteen. And basically what you do is you just pick a district.
- 3:55It's still a county county wide race, but you're just designated to a
- 4:00district and you run one on one or one or on three, you one
- 4:04on five. However, however, many people decide to pick that district Okay,
- 4:10give us a lowdown on Harry Carpenter, give us your biome. Well.
- 4:15Graduated from Sissonville High School. Retired from the Kannak County Sheriff's Office.
- 4:20Put twenty five years in over there, last fifteen with as a chief of
- 4:26the Home Confinement Division. Got two daughters or two children, a son and
- 4:33a daughter, and three granddaughters. I'm a former board member of the Klanak
- 4:39County Humaney Association. I'm the president of the Blue and Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle
- 4:46Club, a member of the FOP Fraternal Order of the Police, and basically
- 4:55I like to perform community service, particularly as a protein to kids. I
- 5:01started a program twenty two years ago at Konskim Park. Lynn Watson and I
- 5:10wanted to do something for Christmas. So the plan was after the first couple
- 5:15of years, we would make it free and available to families that they could
- 5:20bring their kids to the park, have pictures taken with Santa Claus, get
- 5:26free cookies, free hot chalk crafts, ride the train, just spend an
- 5:30evening. And that thing blew up. Of course, I was Santa Claus
- 5:35and we were averaging three hundred kids a night. So it's a program I'm
- 5:41pretty proud of. So now with all this community service and you're to be
- 5:45committed, I think for that, why do you want to be magistrate?
- 5:48Well, it's just an extension of what I've done for the last twenty five
- 5:54years as the chief of the Home Confinement Division. I worked in the courthouse
- 6:00literally every day. I worked with every magistrate, judge, prosecutor, defense,
- 6:06criminal defense attorney, defendants, victims, you know. So I'm I'm
- 6:14My knowledge is pretty vast in that arena. So I just think it'd be
- 6:18a natural fit. So it's a nonpartisan race, of course, But do
- 6:23you mind telling us what your political party is? Uh? It's a nonpartisan
- 6:27okay, Okay, Well I asked that because I always get people that ask
- 6:30that. I don't know. You know that the Supreme Court keeps you restrained
- 6:35as to what you can and can't say publicly, So I just need to
- 6:41be careful with that. Okay, all right? What do you see is
- 6:44not ashamed of it, don't get me wrong, but just want to be
- 6:46careful. I don't want to get that phone call. Okay, what is
- 6:50uh? What's what do you see as the biggest needs of the office here.
- 6:54Well, you know, the manager the magister court is not broken,
- 6:59so you're not gonna go in and fix it. But there are some some
- 7:02tweaks that that I think I'd like to bring to the UH, to the
- 7:06bench. Uh. One of my peeves is is UH bond monitoring. Uh.
- 7:15You get these individuals charges with a crime, a bond set, they
- 7:18go home. Well, while they're home there, they'll still continue to commit
- 7:23crimes. You know, Kenall County has resources to help with the bond monitoring,
- 7:30whether it be home confinement or the day reforts center, UH, somewhere
- 7:35where big brothers watching while they're out on bond awaiting disposition. That's that's probably
- 7:45one of my biggest, biggest things. So you like to change that if
- 7:48at all possible. Well, it's not change, it's there. It's always
- 7:51been. That source has always been there and years ago. Uh, you
- 7:57know I can remember, you know, we were one. I'm training one
- 8:01hundred and eighty two hundred people. You know today it's down in double figures.
- 8:05I don't know why, but you know, when you haven't askedts such
- 8:11as that, you know, the court doesn't cost the court of dime to
- 8:15use it. Okay, I understand what you're saying that, Yeah, it
- 8:18seems like that in the court system here again, we're talking with Harry Carpent,
- 8:20who's candidate for magistrate here in Kanawah County. It seems like I whenever
- 8:24I have anybody that's running from magistrate, or even when I have police officers
- 8:26on the show, which I frequently do, or I have a judge on
- 8:28the show, they always say the same thing is that if as a magistrate
- 8:33you see a lot of the same people and they call it a revolving door,
- 8:35police will tell you that, judge and so on and so forth.
- 8:39I mean, I know it's not you don't have the miracle plan to fix
- 8:41that, but just talk about that, well, you're preaching to the choir.
- 8:46I agree. I mean, we've had some defendants on our program that,
- 8:52to be realistic, they knew as much about the process as their attorneys
- 8:56did, so you know, they knew what to plead, how to make
- 9:01it work. And again, if we if we invoked a little bond monitoring,
- 9:07then maybe just maybe, you know, you might turn some of those
- 9:11people, keep them out of trouble. You know, obviously, from from
- 9:16childhood to adulthood, you know, peer pressure has a lot to do with
- 9:22how you conduct yourself, and if you get keep them away from that element,
- 9:28you know, maybe you can turn them our Drug Court. You know,
- 9:33they've been very, very successful. And I might add that I was
- 9:37one of the original board members that Judge Bailey assigned to the Drug Court twenty
- 9:43years ago. To those twenty years ago, it's been a while, is
- 9:50Mike Ruthfer's first term, so probably about six Okay, it's been a while.
- 9:54Dave Allen chill on five Ay. Life is brought to you a part

- 10:05for details as a General Hardware WV dot com. Talk about your campaign.
- 10:09How's the campaign been? You out knocking doors? You knowing? What do
- 10:13you do in the campaign? Very very very busy. Uh, last two
- 10:18weeks especially, and this week's not too bad. But next week we get
- 10:22it back up again. Yes, we and people have been very receptive these
- 10:28campaign signs. You post them on your Facebook page and be careful what you
- 10:35ask for okay, because people want them. Oh yeah, and that's great.
- 10:39I mean I appreciate that, and we make every effort possible to get
- 10:43them out to them. I think so far I put out over four d
- 10:46or four or four signs and I'm working on three hundred plus yard signs so
- 10:52far. So and you know, a couple of meet the candidates meetings and
- 11:00and just talking to the public in general. What do you hear when you're
- 11:03out there talking to the public. What's the number one couple of things that
- 11:07you hear and talking to the public. Just what we just talked about.
- 11:11Okay, Uh, these fellows, ladies, gentlemen, whatever, defendants that
- 11:16are back out in the community commit and crime. Now understand, you can't
- 11:26put everybody in jail. You know, that's not going to happen, and
- 11:31community members need to understand that. But again, if you have some kind
- 11:37of outlet to place thement, you know, to help them get a turn,
- 11:43then you know, maybe you can succeed sometimes. But that's the biggest
- 11:48complaint, and it's usually the same people in the same neighborhoods. Do you
- 11:54have a Facebook page, website or anything like that. Garry Carpenter from just
- 12:00and uh, what I'm doing on my page. I'm not posting every news
- 12:05event that you know comes out. I'll let you do that. But I'm
- 12:09just doing a little weekly autobiographical thing about me and what what we've talked about
- 12:16today, and and uh and let the canton, Let the voters know the
- 12:22candidate that that's that's that's my message is know who you're voting for. You
- 12:28know, just because you see a name on a ballot, you know,
- 12:31try to and with and with Today just about every candidate has a Facebook page.
- 12:37Go look for it. See what's on that page. See if you
- 12:39can learn a little bit about your candidate. We final thirty wat should somebody
- 12:45vote for Harry Carpenter for magic from Cana Accounting? Well, I have the
- 12:48in my district. I'm the only one that really has any courtroom experience.
- 12:54I've testified in hundreds of cases. I've made decisions regarding, uh, whether
- 13:00people get to go home or go back to jail. So I can make
- 13:03the decisions, and I've got common sense and level headed and i can listen
- 13:11to both parties. And I just think that given the chance, I can
- 13:18do an outstanding and job. And I would encourage voters. If you know
- 13:22any prosecutors, judges or manister, just ask them about Harry Carpenter and I
- 13:28guarantee you that when you leave, that's who you're going to vote for.
- 13:31Harry. I appreciate you being here, man, Thanks a lot, nice
- 13:33to get to know you. Hey, Dave, it's a treat man.
- 13:37Just anytime calling back and just do a little chat. All right, all

- 16:45from Ogden Newspaper. Steven, good morning, welcome to the show. Good
- 16:48morning Dave, thanks for having me on on this April fools dey see what
- 16:52you did there? No, that wasn't planned that way, I promise much.
- 16:59Uh So, now if I would have to do something like that,
- 17:00what had Brad on so we could have the BS report? Yes, let's
- 17:06go back to the session, which wrapped up a couple of weeks ago.
- 17:07Overall, this is a very very loaded question seven. But overall, your
- 17:11thoughts on the session, It was kind of a waste of time. And
- 17:14I've said that, thank you for coming, I've said that all throughout the
- 17:18session. It was kind of a waste. It was an election year.
- 17:21They were going to play it somewhat safe. They obviously played to some legislation
- 17:26meant to show that they were more further to the right than their primary opponents
- 17:30that they're all having because most of them are being challenged. A lot of
- 17:32these elections, as you know, are going to be decided in the primary
- 17:34and which candidate is more conservative than the other. So you've had some bills
- 17:38that were pushed and a lot of them died, Which is interesting enough to
- 17:42me that you have a super majority and a lot of those bills die either
- 17:45because maybe you didn't really want them in the first place, but you wanted
- 17:48to look like you're doing them, or bad management one or the other.
- 17:53I don't know if I want to be a lawmaker to have to decide which
- 17:56is whitch on that. But it really was kind of lackluster. Were you
- 18:02surprised at the governor vetoed the immunization bill. No, I really was not.
- 18:07I kind of got the impression he was going to veto that. Keep
- 18:11in mind, he's got Sherry Young, who's a former Kanaal County health officer
- 18:15who now runs the Department of Health for the state. You have Clay marsh
- 18:21the longtime COVID czar, a friend of the governor. Knew was probably going
- 18:23to be putting pressure on him. A lot of pressure, certainly from the
- 18:27medical community, pediatricians, doctors, pharmacists. Surprisingly, as much as they
- 18:33say they want it, and there's a political movement out there for it,
- 18:37there wasn't that much of a push from I guess we'll call him the pro
- 18:41health freedom side to get the governor to sign it. There was a petition
- 18:47and a few people that showed up at the Governor's office, but not as
- 18:51much pressure on that end as you would think. So I think it's not
- 18:55a surprise to me. I think we've done such a good job of vaccinations
- 19:00in this state when it comes to longtime transmittable diseases that there's really no reason
- 19:07to keep it up. And I'm very surprised that bill even got as much
- 19:10traction as it ended up getting. Think we have a call Stephen. So
- 19:14all right, Anthony, if you're ready, we'll go ahead and we'll say
- 19:17caller. You're on with Steven Adams. Go ahead. Hello, Hello David.
- 19:22Yes, sir David, this is Emma Hendrick. I wanted to let
- 19:27everyone know that there is a meet and greet for Secretary of State Mac Warner
- 19:34Tuesday, April second, which is tomorrow Holiday and Express Civic Center, one
- 19:44hundred Civic Center Drive, which is right across the street, across Courier Street
- 19:48from the Civic Center. It will be from four until eight pm. Secretary
- 19:56of State Mac Warner will be there. He's a veteran, he's a West
- 20:00Virginia. Yeah, okay, all right now, ok we're not going to
- 20:03do political commercials here, sir. Sorry, Tell mister Warner, who's a
- 20:07good friend of mine, Anne Stevens. Tell him he's going to get a
- 20:10bill for this, just so you know that. Okay, but give us
- 20:14the details. Go ahead, Okay. When is it for four until eight
- 20:19pm, Tuesday, April second, Holiday Inn Express? All right, noted,
- 20:23I appreciate it. Nine twenty seven, so let's get back to it.
- 20:27See that with all due respect to Secretary Warner. You know, you
- 20:30got to pay for that sort of stuff. Yeah, And speaking of paid
- 20:33promotion, we actually have a big feature article this weekend on Secretary of State
- 20:37can it's the Republicans, So that'd be Chris Warner, Mackwinner's brother, Doug
- 20:41scaff Ken Reid, and Putnam County Clerk Brian Wood. So you can look
- 20:45at that in our newspapers. All right, let me get back. I
- 20:49want I want to ask you about some polls. There are a lot of
- 20:53polls out, you know, I mean this time of year, that's what
- 20:56you see. One of the things I think that kind of interested me is
- 21:02the number of people that are Republicans at least in some of these polls,
- 21:04ever, that are that are undecided, especially in the rates for governor.
- 21:07Your thoughts on that, oh, huge undecided since polls I've seen, I've
- 21:11seen an internal poll in regards to the second Congressional District tracer the undecided that's
- 21:15a really high on that. We have now the Emerson College next Star Pole
- 21:19that just came out last week, and the undecideds are high on that.
- 21:23Sure, Morrissey has what about thirty three percent in that poll, I think
- 21:29more Capital had about fourteen percent. Chris Miller seems to be coming up.
- 21:33He was at sixteen. I recall Mac kind of in the bottom of that.
- 21:37But the end decided said, I think we're somewhere around twenty eight twenty
- 21:41nine percent in that poll. And yeah, people are really just kind of
- 21:45sitting back and kind of waiting to see It says a lot. It says
- 21:49one thing. It says that Morrissey's support is sort of kind of petered out.
- 21:52He can only really go down. I think I think he will lose
- 21:56people between now and the election. But it says that there's a lot of
- 22:00room for particularly Chris Miller and more Capito to really like, work hard and
- 22:04get their name out there. We know Chris Miller certainly is. He's got
- 22:07a new ad out today and I want to get to that here in a
- 22:11couple of moments. But I will mention this on polling Stephen Hoppy. An
- 22:15informal poll on the governor's race on Friday was a Twitter poll, very informal,
- 22:19but it showed former Delegate more Capito in the lead slightly at forty one
- 22:25percent, morris thirty six, Chris Miller at fourteen percent, Secretary of State
- 22:29Warner at nine percent. Very non scientific poll, but nonetheless, that's about
- 22:33the first one I've seen that had Capito in the lead. That's the first
- 22:36one that I've seen that had capitol in the lead. I saw that over
- 22:37the weekend. I'd say, right now, I don't know about the Next
- 22:42Star poll. The thing that confuses me about that there, it's like a
- 22:45missing two percent in that vel Mark Curtis is going to be on the show
- 22:48Wednesday, so I'll have to ask Mark about that. I as to ask
- 22:51him about that because it annoys me. They're like, it doesn't add up
- 22:52to one hundred percent, and polls that don't add up to one hundred percent
- 22:56really kind of get to me. But exactly, I think Morrisey's prom lean
- 23:00the lead. I'd say more captains probably fairly high up just for the name
- 23:03recognition aspect. But Chris Miller, I have no doubt it's probably shooting up
- 23:07to the top. And I would love to see another poll to kind of
- 23:11corroborate what we just saw on a Next Star poll. Talking to Steven Adams
- 23:14of Ogden Newspapers here on a Dave Allen show in the heart of West Virginia,
- 23:18there exists a profound force that goes beyond the realm with sports, transity
- 23:22limitations at fostering the sensi belonging Special Olympics, a remarkable initiative showcase of the

- 23:34highlighting the Special Olympics at Facebook dot com, slash five adwcchs. All right,
- 23:38Stephen, here's my take on the governor's race amongst the Republicans. Now
- 23:41we all know who many of the Republicans are backing. I'll take the Americans
- 23:45for Prosperity Group technically a nonpart of some organization, but they do lean to
- 23:49one side. And I think that if you talk to Creston, who I
- 23:52had on the show last week, and Jason Dell, they'll probably tell you
- 23:56that they are firmly behind Morrisey, as they've said any of the major players
- 24:00major players in the party are squarely behind Chris Miller, although they may not
- 24:04be quite as vocal about it. The more mainline moderate country Club Chamber of
- 24:11commerce types are seemed to be backing Capitol and mac Warner obviously, because of
- 24:15his military background, is certainly going to have a lot of support from those
- 24:19that are not only military people, but also those that are very sympathetic as
- 24:25we all are to the military folks. So everybody's starting to line up.
- 24:30I guess yeah, I think that's it for sure. I could actually wallpaper
- 24:34one side of my house with as many Americans for Prosperity and mailers as I've
- 24:38gotten in regards to the Morsy Rays very fervently in that corner, you got
- 24:42Club for Growth, he got Black Bear Pack. That's the former Morrissey advisor
- 24:47running at a lot of big money. There, a lot of big expenditures
- 24:49going on there. You've course got more Capito, who does of course have
- 24:56a lot of the same backers as his mother's US Senator Shelley Moore Capito,
- 25:00I think possibly. I think we all expect the governor at some point to
- 25:03probably endorse and probably endorse him in that. But I mean that's still kind
- 25:07of hanging out there. And then you've got, of course Chris Miller Huntington
- 25:11automobile Dealer, definitely pushing out a lot of commercials, has a lot of
- 25:15support of fellow business people in similar businesses, car dealerships and things of that
- 25:19nature. Probably has a lot of the social conservative support. I feel like
- 25:22that's starting to grow. And then mac Warner, who I think should have
- 25:26always stuck with the lane of military and veterans because he is the only veteran
- 25:32in the race and that's a huge component. So I think if he keeps
- 25:36focusing back on that, I think that could be helpful going forward. Now
- 25:41let's get to you could sort of mention some of the advertising I want to
- 25:44talk about the Primarily you talked about the mailers that you've been getting. I
- 25:48have said this to political candidates with all due respect. Of course I'm going
- 25:52to push radio, you know that, indigital and things of that nature.
- 25:55However, Prince still alive print as well. I will say this that if
- 26:00you go to your local post office, but you know, if you happen
- 26:02to walk into the Charleston Saint all but Night, whatever the post office is,
- 26:04go in, look at how many of those end up in the trash.
- 26:07So, guys, I don't know if those really work or not.
- 26:11I used to tell political candidates before I started doing this show, and I
- 26:14was in the political game a little bit more. Had those candidates man that
- 26:18wanted to push those mailers out had said ninety five percent of them end up
- 26:21in the trash. Keep that in mind. But that's neither here or there,
- 26:23all right, So let's talk about some of the negative ads that are
- 26:29out there right now. There are some that are particularly brutal against Attorney General
- 26:34Patrick morris and his race for governor. Well, that's right, of course.
- 26:37You have the one ad put out by a independent expenditure committee that has
- 26:41ran by Chris Miller's father, also the husband of US Representative Carol Miller,
- 26:47that seems to be going hard after Morrisy in regards to possible connections during his
- 26:52lobbyist days lobbying for pharmaceutical companies that had some connection to medication used in gen
- 27:00refirming care. I think one of those ads got pulled off Way TV from
- 27:03what I saw, so there may be an issue with that ad. But
- 27:06Chris Miller has also now released his own ads kind of hitting Morrissey for the
- 27:10same thing. Today just unveiled a new ad with a parent and daughter from
- 27:15Kanall County talking about their experiences with a transgender girl or biological boy in a
- 27:22locker room. And apparently Morrissey had a very kind of wishwa washy response to
- 27:27it, so now they're against Morrissey. It's a very interesting ad that they've
- 27:32put out today, so a lot of pressure on that we just pressed.
- 27:34Of course, have to vet that stuff very carefully, So I would like
- 27:37to kind of vet it and see how much of this is accurate and what's
- 27:41not. But no doubt about it, it's negative and they think it's going
- 27:45to have a big effect on point voters away from there. I just when
- 27:48I sit back and you know, I hear ads on the radio or specifically
- 27:52you see the ones on television, especially the ones that are coming from all
- 27:53the packs, many of these, Steven, you could sit there and go
- 27:57not happening, not happening, not happening, didn't happen. And that's that's
- 28:00across the board from a lot of different candidates. I'm not picking on one
- 28:04in particular. I'm just saying, you know, just and as voters,
- 28:08you really got to do your homework, you know, on these things,
- 28:11and do it yourself. You know. Well, yeah, because it's true
- 28:15that the ads have to be true, that's one of the things that you
- 28:18have. Well, let me I'm making a larger point on it. They
- 28:21have to be true, but it doesn't mean the true things that you're putting
- 28:25in the ad aren't necessarily stretched or connected to things that aren't related to something
- 28:30else. So there's off a few skation always in these ads and you got
- 28:33to take them with a brown So exactly right. But Dave Allen showing five
- 28:37AA life is brought to you apart by a Bridge Valley. Are you interested
- 28:40to prove in your company's IT workforce? You may want to know Bridge Valley
- 28:42offers custom tailored IT training to bridge the skills gap. At Bridge Valley you
- 28:45can train for little or no cost, but the fifty to fifty salary match.
- 28:48Bridge Valley can also supply a skill to graduates and apprenticeships for your company.
- 28:52There's a Bridge Valley that eedus slash apprenticeships today. That's not got a
- 28:56couple of texts here shall we do it, mister Adams. Text says Dave,
- 28:59I changed my voter registration ten years ago the Independent. Now that the
- 29:03state has gotten worse under GOP control, too many social issues on the people.
- 29:07We want to be free not controlled. Wow. Yeah, well,
- 29:11I mean there's a lot of people that are switched to independent. And keep
- 29:14in mind, I don't have the numbers in front of me, but independent
- 29:17non affiliated it is pretty large. It's as nearly as large as the Republican
- 29:22Democratic voter registration. So it's one of those things like people are going to
- 29:26that the sort of a catch all because maybe they're not quite Democrats on that
- 29:29side of things, but maybe they see the Republican side of things getting too
- 29:32crazy, so it's sort of a safe harbor for them. Tech says Dave.
- 29:36I'll be honest with you, the mailers and the numerous roadside signs blank
- 29:40me off and I'm less likely to vote for them. I will tell you
- 29:44someone that had a funny tweet the other day about how at least and I
- 29:48won't say who the candidate is, but I know who they're referring to.
- 29:51How they're not sure if the person's running for a judge ship or running to
- 29:53be America's next top model. So there's a lot of very model esque photos
- 30:00being used on some of these big signs. Texas, ninety eight percent of
- 30:04all mail ends up in the trash. People don't file away their mail.
- 30:08Mailers are very effective. All that's needed is a repetition, just like in
- 30:11radio. As long as the repetition is there, the trash can does not
- 30:15matter. Maylor's work and it's good advice to use them. Well, I
- 30:19would love to see some corroborating evidence for that. I'd say this election broadcast.
- 30:23I mean, I'm on a broadcast platform, so being a little bias
- 30:26here, but I think broadcast is the way to go, and I think
- 30:30you're seeing that with Chris Miller with some of his numbers coming up. I
- 30:33mean it's moving a needle somewhere. So yeah, yeah, and exactly all
- 30:36right. And you know, the thing about it is is and you can
- 30:40hate on it, you can, but it's just where we are right now.
- 30:41It takes a couple hundred thousand dollars to be governor AT's say, to
- 30:47West Virginia, if not, if not, much more than that, and
- 30:51we've gotten to a place. And I'm not picking on the governor's race.
- 30:52I'm talking about it in general that outside of a simple county race, and
- 30:57Kanawa County is a little bit kind of an outlier because they're such a large
- 31:00county. But it takes hundreds of thousands of dollars to get elected to just
- 31:06about any office. I mean I'm talking about your you want to run for
- 31:10assessor, and I'm just using that you want to run for a surveyor better?
- 31:12Have you know about one hundred thousand dollars in the bank. Yeah,
- 31:15I've never really been anti money in politics per se, because at the end
- 31:19of the day, campaign science costs money. Mailers cost money, TV radio
- 31:23ads cost money, newspaper ads cost money. I mean, you can't run
- 31:26at a campaign on ten dollars. You just can't do it. You got
- 31:32to have some money in the bank. And even congressionally that I think someone
- 31:34said on average you have about have to have about three hundred thousand dollars to
- 31:38even have a serious congressional campaign. All right, I think we have a
- 31:41call, So let's go to Anthony. Let's go to the phones, and
- 31:45you're on with Steven Adams. Go ahead, Hey Steven, this is Joe
- 31:49Charleston. Let's Heyja, just about ballots in general. And I called last
- 31:56week about sample ballots. And you know me, historically and a lot of
- 32:01my family members used to be able to get a sample ballot. No matter
- 32:06which party you're on or one of each, just to kind of vet and
- 32:08see what's going on and look them over and do your own little research.
- 32:13And they didn't have any ballots as they do this general ballots that should go
- 32:16through. I mean, you get all this junk in the mail, but
- 32:20you know, a lot of us used to see ballots. They would publish
- 32:22them, you know, in the newspapers in different places, and especially if
- 32:25you could get one, you know, at least a couple of days before
- 32:29the election. Well, it's a little bit early, obs up in here.
- 32:30It's a little bit early right now. I mean they normally wait till
- 32:34around the time early voting starts. And I can tell you having some experience
- 32:38as Steven does while working in state government, I mean there's a lot that
- 32:42goes into put it. I understand completely what you're saying, and I always
- 32:45try to look over the ballot, you know, before I go into the
- 32:47voting booth myself. But as of right now, it's a little bit early,
- 32:52but certainly by the time early voting starts, ballots should be out by
- 32:54that point. Yeah, I mean, we obviously don't have the deadlines in
- 32:57front of us, but there usually are pretty solid deadlines. You should be
- 32:59able to to your county clerks once the deadline has passed to go get a
- 33:02copy of that. And I can't speak for the local newspapers here. All
- 33:06my newspapers in the northern half of the state, but they predominantly put the
- 33:08sample ballots in their newspapers, so hopefully they do that here in Charleston as
- 33:14well. So just be on the lookout. But if you ever have any
- 33:16questions, call your county clerk and ask. But that doesn't give you much
- 33:20time when they do when they get ready for early vote and get all that
- 33:22done, it only gives you a few weeks before the election, okay,
- 33:27right, well, yeah, that's why I was used to seems like they
- 33:29used to do them because everything's closed, they know who's running for what now,
- 33:32and just somebody had had a sample ballot out there, so give a
- 33:37general populace time to kind of do their own little you know, calling and
- 33:43screening and seeing who they want to vote for. But there again, it
- 33:45seems like everybody's kind of picking a name that they are familiar with when they
- 33:49go to vote. This guy's name sounds familiar to the other guys okay,
- 33:52all right, Joe, I appreciate your phone call. Thanks a lot.
- 33:54It is nineteen minutes away from ten final texts before we let you go here.
- 33:59Steven said, if it cost three million dollars ROUN for Governor Chris Miller
- 34:01will be set. The Miller family thanks the federal government for the or can
- 34:06thank the federal government for a three million dollar grant. The only thing I
- 34:08will say about PPP. I think it's right to scrutinize Chris Miller for that,
- 34:14for sure. But I'd also point out that if you were a business
- 34:16and you had the ability to get it and pay it back, you've probably
- 34:21got a PPP loan. One of my best friends got people. I don't
- 34:23know a single business owner that didn't get well that's it. So I can't
- 34:27fold him for that, but I can't go ahead. But as for the
- 34:30scrutiny, for sure, absolutely needs to be scrutinized. All right, quickly.
- 34:34Anything you're looking at this week? Oh man, Well, I'm hoping
- 34:37to talk to some commissioner candidates for AG commissioner this week. That's kind of
- 34:40a quiet race or whatnot? You got, Joshua Higginbotham challenging current commissioner can't

- 38:54been going on in Huntington. What city am I in here? Let me
- 38:59go back to Charleston for a moment. I'm sorry, I have a little
- 39:01brain fog for some reason today. But so in Charleston, the city that
- 39:07we are currently in right now, we had the Little Wayne concert last week.
- 39:10I know, we had skinned and zz Top's not all about concerts.
- 39:14So but we've had a lot of activity. The all white affair that went
- 39:17on, Woody Woods, my man, making that happen. There's been a
- 39:22lot of good stuff going on in Charleston here lately. Bro. Yeah,
- 39:23I mean it's it's where the weather's getting ready to break and it's getting ready
- 39:28to be the start of the of the very exciting yet crazy season in Charleston.
- 39:31I mean it has been over the last couple of years we've seen this
- 39:35time of year really start to be the kickoff for what ends up being extremely
- 39:39exciting spring and then an amazing summer and end of the fall. But the
- 39:44back to back concert server it's called seem Convention Center, were just absolutely amazing.
- 39:47I think you know, I was at the Little Wayne concert with my
- 39:51wife and it was just great to see everybody there having a good time,
- 39:53enjoying themselves. And it seemed like and from every indication that Little Wayne himself
- 39:59had a great time, And that's always very important, right because that helps
- 40:01us continue to get the ax. And then the Skinner Zzy Top Show on
- 40:06Saturday, Woodies Party, and then just everything else, all the Easter events.
- 40:09We had the Easter egg Hunt down to Magic Island yesterday, we had
- 40:14the Lately Field. They had an almost a carnival basically Easter event. It
- 40:20was just it was a really amazing weekend. Got a little bit of rain
- 40:22mixed in there, but overall we couldn't have asked for anything better. When
- 40:25might we see some regatta announcements coming up? I think you've probably start seeing
- 40:29her God announcement. So for the next couple of weeks, yeah, we'll
- 40:31start start to see those flow out as we get excited into the summer.
- 40:35So yeah, it's gonna be I'm excited. I'm excited. So the next
- 40:38couple of weeks, I think you'll start to see the regatta stuff come out
- 40:40and that'll really build toward towards just an amazing summer with everything going on.
- 40:45I do want to mention that the Home Show is going to be this weekend
- 40:49to Kyle Seeming Convention Center. I say that because as I'm getting I'm talking
- 40:52to my man Jim Strawn this morning, we're gonna have some folks on from
- 40:55the Home Show on the show coming up tomorrow, and also I think we're
- 40:59gonna have some more people on Friday. So I wanted to ask me for
- 41:01an update on the municipalaudatorium situation. Where are we as far as an engineering
- 41:06report? So we have the engineering report is almost complete. The plan is
- 41:09for it to be released on Thursday. I think here here soon you'll see
- 41:13a meeting be scheduled sometime Thursday in order for the report to be made public
- 41:20and have some discussion amongst both city council members and members of the coliseumic Vender
- 41:23Center Board. So I would expect it to be Thursday of this week when
- 41:28we really start to discuss what the report says. All of the details in
- 41:30the report a lot of the history of the Municipaladatorum, which I think is
- 41:35going to be important for people to see. We won't dig into it too
- 41:37much, but the report goes into that and the issues that the building has
- 41:42had over the last basically since it was built. It is not does not
- 41:45appear to be, you know, kind of an isolated incident over the last
- 41:50you know, ten years or so it's been. It's been a while that
- 41:52that building has had issues. But we'll start to see the report coming on
- 41:54Thursday and then have discussions about what's next. Had a text you're wanting to
- 41:59know, is the city going to be giving away composts this year? I
- 42:01don't believe we're going to be giving away composts this year, but we will
- 42:05check and let you know, and they will let you know for sure.
- 42:07I think that we're out and I know that our machine went down, and
- 42:10it's one of those machines that is very difficult to fix based on its location.
- 42:15It's hard to get out of there, get to our machine shop and
- 42:17get back, so they might have got that done. I'm not quite sure.
- 42:21But if my answer is wrong, out we'll let you know, all
- 42:22right, I do want to throw this out there, kind of get serious
- 42:25here for a moment. I know that's difficult for you and I to do
- 42:28when you put two of us together, but I do get nearly almost dately
- 42:32taxed about this the show. Are you at liberty or to discuss any information
- 42:36about the Jimmy rist and investigation? Anything new to report there or no?
- 42:39I mean, the last thing I heard about it was the last thing you
- 42:43heard about it, which essentially, once it hits the prosecutor's office, it's
- 42:45out of the You know, the police spart will continue to help in the
- 42:49investigation, but once it hits their office, that's their purview and what comes
- 42:52out of that is up to them and whatever they feel to do. So
- 42:54No, once Chief Dempsy announced it went over there, that's the last I
- 42:59heard about it. All right, We need to take a break. I'm

- 46:09zero four nine three five five zero zero Chief of Staff for the Mayor for
- 46:13the Mayor, Amy Goodwin, Matt Sutton, is here any updates on the
- 46:16projects around the town Center? So yeah, I mean, I think earlier
- 46:21this week or this is a different week, but last week the Sports Authority
- 46:24Board met they are moving closer to finalizing the agreement to purchase the Macy's building,
- 46:30and then once that happens, then demolition will start and they'll start to
- 46:35be more more secure plans about what the actual sports center will look like.
- 46:38So there's a lot of progress. It's slow. It's unwinding anything that's dealing
- 46:43with the mall properties, the garages, the mall, Macy's anything. It's
- 46:45just a it's a it's a hard thing to unwind. But that's been the
- 46:50work for the last month between our team and the Counties team and feel like
- 46:53there's been great progress. So yeah, we're gonna start to see a lot
- 46:57of things move probably over the next two three months. And you know,
- 47:00the we all remember what the town Center, you know, was back in
- 47:04the day. You're from this area. I'm not, but I can remember
- 47:07visiting the town Center and what it was like and uh, and we're just
- 47:10hoping to return it to something. I know that's not up to the city,
- 47:14that's up to the that's private own, private owned business. But still
- 47:16we'd love to see it returning. Absolutely. Yeah, we somewhere. Yeah.
- 47:21I mean, I think what our philosophy is is that it's the government's
- 47:23job to to prop up spaces in order for private development to succeed. And
- 47:28we saw that work with City Center. It's like Plaza. We've seen it
- 47:31work with the upgrades of the Convention Center. We've seen it work in different
- 47:36models as we get ready to do the Canal Boulevard as well, and the
- 47:38same thing's true here. We're very helpful and believe that with the addition of
- 47:43the Sports Center downtown, uh, and the addition of you know, several
- 47:46new businesses and new and the new headquarters of TC Energy that it will be,
- 47:52they'll had no choice but to either develop the property or to find somebody
- 47:55who will develop the property, because it's going to be too good an asset.
- 47:58We're going to have too many people in town. And I think we've
- 48:00proven over the last couple of weeks. You know, quick aside. You
- 48:04know the Little Wayne concert. People see it as a concert. But my
- 48:07wife owns a small business that is really an appointment only business, and it's
- 48:12in the wedding business. But she had somebody come into the store on Friday
- 48:15who ended up buying a wedding dress and she asked them where they're from,
- 48:16and they said, Ronoke, Virginia, So we'll how'd you end up here?
- 48:19So we were at the Little Waye concert last night and we just saw
- 48:22that you had a wedding shop and they came in and bought I mean,
- 48:23so they came in from Roanoke, stayed the night, and spent money in
- 48:27town. And that's just one story. And I think those are the type
- 48:29of things that we lean on when we really look at how we drive economic
- 48:31development. Our job is to put people in the city of Charleston and then
- 48:35businesses will grow from there. Any getting serious here for a moment, Any
- 48:38common or anything about the tay Kon situation I think out right now, I
- 48:44think the Chief of Police and the Deputy Chief of Police are still doing their
- 48:46investigation, and then as it relates to anything other than that, I don't
- 48:50have to leave that up to our legal team to talk about. But we
- 48:52really have seen since Chief Dempsey and Deputy Chief Web have come on, it's
- 48:57really been a three sixty or a one eighty I guess would be the upper
- 49:00term for the police department. I think we've seen a lot of things heading
- 49:02in the right direction. They've implemented a lot of policies and they've really started
- 49:06from the ground up. I know I won't step on there thunder, but
- 49:07they've really been talking to, you know, folks who have been on the
- 49:10Police ppark for six months, and for six years and for sixteen years to
- 49:14try to figure out what the direction of the police department needs to be.
- 49:15And we've been very happy with how that's been working. But they've aalanced you
- 49:19on five Eybey Line brought to you a part by Hustan's Pizza. Get a
- 49:21large At and che Pepperoni pizza and a large toss solid only twenty ninety nine
- 49:24at your favorite Huston's location, Texas. How much money's been allocated for Cato
- 49:30golf course. So that's an interesting question. I'm learning all about this.
- 49:32Cato golf course right now is under review. We brought in an expert I
- 49:36think from Pennsylvania maybe somewhere to come in and to teach our to figure out
- 49:40exactly what needs to happen with the greens and to teach our staff about how
- 49:44they need to properly maintain and operate the greens. So I think over the
- 49:46next few months you're going to see a lot of upgrades to the golf course.
- 49:49Not my area of expertise by far maintaining a golf course or playing golf
- 49:53for that matter, but it is right now is a tremendous focus under the
- 49:58Mayor and director. Poor been talking about it for the last several months over
- 50:00the winter, and now we finally got an expert in who's going to tell
- 50:04us what to do. So it's going to be it's going to be exciting
- 50:06for people who play. I know the disc golf goes well there and highlight
- 50:08hiking trails, but we're getting ready to get that golf course. Back on
- 50:12track, I did want to mention that it is spring, which means there
- 50:15are several spring cleanups going on. This Saturday, Team Cleanup comes to the
- 50:21Kanasa City in South Hills area starting at nine o'clock. You could pick up
- 50:23supplies anything that you made into the Kanawa City Community Center. I posted some
- 50:28information about that on my social media, So hopefully by the end the rain
- 50:31will be out of here. Yeah, and those are always really well attended,
- 50:34I know, you know. It's something every year since we started the
- 50:37Councilvan Bruce King and Councilman and Chad Robinson have asked for in kanas City and
- 50:43we've been able to do them and then all the folks in South Hills.
- 50:45They've been very successful and we enjoy them. It's a good community event as
- 50:49well, and I think you get to learn a lot about what's going on
- 50:51you neighborhood if you come into kanas City right now, people think it's a
- 50:53lot about traffic, but there's a lot of business development going on in that
- 50:55area as well, So be good for people from all across the city to
- 50:59come out and then it'll kind of culminate the last cleanup we have will be
- 51:02the weekend right before USA cyclings in town, and we're going to do that
- 51:06downtown in the East End, and that's really all hands on deck right now
- 51:08for that. That's one of the largest events, at least I'll ever experience
- 51:13in this town in terms of how big it's, how much it spreads out,
- 51:15and how much resources is needed. And some information you released as we
- 51:17close. Some information came out last week about that. Yeah, the routes
- 51:22came out last week, and then all of the traffic and all those patterns
- 51:23will come out. But I think really looking forward to what the CDB is
- 51:27doing and what USA Cycling is doing along with our team is just it is.
- 51:30It is going to be a very impressive event. We're going to learn
- 51:34as we go. We're going to ask people to bear with us as it
- 51:36relates to the street closures and all of that. But I think over the
- 51:37next couple of weeks you'll see our team out talking to people who are directly
- 51:40impacted by the street closures and figuring out how we can make sure that their
- 51:44business or church as well, and then working very closely to make sure that
- 51:47because that starts on election Day, so this is going to be the biggest
- 51:52event. I mean, if you think about it, I've said this the
- 51:53biggest event Charleston has ever held. Because Regatta is primarily in one air,
- 51:58this is all over the city. Charles wrapping up now, It's going to
- 52:00be the biggest event, at least in my lifetime, that I've that we've
- 52:02ever seen, just due to the sheer volume of area that it's going to
- 52:07cover and the amount of area is going to cover in our town. But
- 52:08I tell you what, we're excited about it, and we close the whole
- 52:12town down in order to have amazing events like this. So that's gonna be
- 52:15the kick off to our season. And then then it goes in the Festival,
- 52:17Then it goes into Regatta, it goes into Multifest, it goes in
- 52:21a rip fest, and it's just gonna be an exciting summer in the city
- 52:23Charleston. All right, man, I appreciate you being here, Matt Sutton,
- 52:25chief of staff for the Good One administration. I appreciate you being here.
