Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Confusion About the Real Inner Self and the External Surface Personality Is the Root of Our Suffering
Transcript
- 0:01When an individual takes up the spiritual path, there is a
- 0:05considerable focus on the idea that the life of the external
- 0:09world is an illusion and needs to be abandoned.
- 0:13In order to achieve spiritual Liberation.
- 0:18He sees that a focus on the external personality, its needs
- 0:22desires, satisfactions Joys, and sufferings, Is a distraction to
- 0:29his spiritual concentration. The answer is done generally to
- 0:34avoid the external Focus as much as possible to allow the
- 0:39spiritual discipline to bear fruit.
- 0:42There is not much attempt generally in this approach to
- 0:46distinguish different elements of the external being or Surface
- 0:50personality. As it is all meant to be, put
- 0:54aside. The fact that there are
- 0:57different drivers of understanding and action in the
- 1:00surface, being does not enter into the discussion.
- 1:05If everything is an illusion, what difference can it make to
- 1:08distinguish? The sub elements of that
- 1:10illusion after all. This is, however, an implied
- 1:15acknowledgement of a duality between the illusory, outer
- 1:19world, and the spiritual reality.
- 1:24When one comes to the understanding that The Duality
- 1:27so created is itself artificial. And that there is an omnipresent
- 1:32reality that encompasses both the unmanifest absolute and the
- 1:39Manifest creation, then one can recognize that it is not the
- 1:44world that is the illusion, but our relationship to it and our
- 1:49absorption in it. the object then is not to try to cancel the
- 1:54world and our relationship to it, but to gain an understanding
- 1:58of it through a new standpoint and perspective, As one steps
- 2:03back from the absorption in the outer personality.
- 2:07One can begin to observe it and see how it is really made up of
- 2:11a number of different aspects based in the physical vital and
- 2:17mental levels of consciousness that are inter woven with each
- 2:21other developing a new relationship to the world, then
- 2:25requires a reconfiguring of each of these elements to directly
- 2:30represent the Deep. Reality and not the illusory
- 2:35reality that we have imagined, SRI, aurobindo, observes, quote,
