- 0:01It is a natural human tendency and it carries over to those who
- 0:05take up spiritual practice. This tendency sees most things
- 0:10through the mental lens and tries to categorize them as
- 0:13black and white, positive and negative, etcetera.
- 0:17Essentially creating a mental framework of exclusion that
- 0:21looks to thoughts, actions and focus without looking at
- 0:26process, timing or the needs of the various elements being
- 0:31addressed, whether they are individual formations of the
- 0:35mental, emotional, vital or physical basis or more general
- 0:40formations of the social framework.
- 0:43Thus, we tend to extremes and become dogmatic.
- 0:48This habit of perspective also affects the way spiritual
- 0:52seekers look at the issue of curing illness.
- 0:55We frequently hear the refrain that they do not take any
- 0:58medicines or vaccinations as they don't believe in them and
- 1:02believe that their faith and their spiritual practice will
- 1:05take care of them. There is certainly a certain
- 1:09element of truth in the pure surrender of the being to
- 1:12spiritual guidance. However, in many cases, when an
- 1:17individual becomes I'll, we see a different picture emerge which
- 1:22shows the faith was not as perfect as their mental belief
- 1:26system had professed. Sriorovindo explores the process
- 1:31by which spiritual force can effectuate healing in the
- 1:34physical body. Spiritual force, when it is
- 1:38active in the being, needs to deal with the realities of the
- 1:42mind, the vital being, and the physical body.
- 1:46The physical body in particular has a material basis and is thus
- 1:51subject to habitual patterns of response and reaction that are
- 1:55deeply embedded and are both difficult to change and which
- 2:00take time, even with constant and repeated pressure to change.
- 2:06While the pressure to change is taking place, the being may
- 2:10require support that is operative on the level to which
- 2:13it is habitually accustomed. The use of a placebo shows us
- 2:18that the mind can more easily accept the healing force, in
- 2:21many cases through a physical medium that convinces it that it
- 2:25is being aided. The use of pranayam, mantras or
- 2:30prayers may help the vital envelope strengthen its ability
- 2:34to resist the disease. The use of specific medicines,
- 2:38including homeopathy, which works on the vibrational level,
- 2:43may aid the body in its own response to a situation.
- 2:48The question is not solved by taking an extreme position that
- 2:51does not recognize time, process and circumstances.
- 2:56Rather, the constant pressure of the spiritual force can take the
- 3:01temporary and intermediate aid of mental, vital and physical
- 3:05support systems to address illness and help the seeker
- 3:10maintain a strong foundation for the spiritual work to be done,
- 3:16Sri Aurobindo writes quote Certainly one can act from
- 3:21within on an illness and cure it.
- 3:24Only it is not always easy as there is much resistance in
- 3:28matter. A resistance of inertia, an
- 3:32untiring persistence is necessary.
- 3:35At first. One may fail altogether, or the
- 3:39symptoms increase, but gradually the control of the body or of a
- 3:44particular illness becomes stronger again.
- 3:48To cure an occasional attack of illness by inner means is
- 3:51comparatively easy. To make the body immune from it
- 3:55in future is more difficult. A chronic malady is harder to
- 4:01deal with, more reluctant to disappear entirely, than an
- 4:05occasional disturbance of the body, so long as the control of
- 4:10the body is imperfect. There are all these and other
- 4:13imperfections and difficulties in the use of the inner force.
- 4:19If you can succeed by the interaction in preventing
- 4:23increase, even that is something.
- 4:26You have then by Abyasa to strengthen the power till it
- 4:31becomes able to cure. Note that so long as the power
- 4:35is not entirely there, some aid of physical means need not be
- 4:41altogether rejected. End Quote.
