- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to the Kenny Wallace show
- 0:03brought to you by Jegs love. That little diecast, the Jegs
- 0:08diecast brought to you by Jegs the leader in high performance,
- 0:12aftermarket car parts and remember to go to jegs.com for
- 0:17everything and anything you need.
- 0:18They always say Herman, tell him we got Jeep parts, and we got
- 0:22truck parts. That's a big deal at Jags right
- 0:25now. Well, we were so honored
- 0:27earlier, Car said that I could interview Tyler Redick.
- 0:32And this story is fascinating to me, I wanted to interview Tyler,
- 0:37because years ago maybe 10 15 years ago, I met Tyler at a dirt
- 0:44track and I think his story is so fascinating because here's
- 0:49Tyler Reddick at a dirt track. Maybe 15, 16 years old I watch
- 0:55them from afar. He becomes a superstar.
- 0:57He's one you know a handful of Nascar Cup races, he started out
- 1:02like us rednecks, start out as dirt racing and now Tyler
- 1:07Reddick is that the highest form of Motorsports possible in
- 1:12America and that's the Nascar Cup Series.
- 1:15So as we head to North Wilkesboro or North Wilkesboro,
- 1:21what is wrong with me as we head to North Wilkesboro for the
- 1:25All-Star Race? And I remind you, it pays 1
- 1:28million dollars to win. Can you believe that?
- 1:31Hey, we're going up to that little dirt track and it pays 1
- 1:35million dollars to win. So I asked Tyler radek about
- 1:39that. I asked him a lot.
- 1:43So here we go. Sit back and we were able to
- 1:47steal Tyler etic for about 10 minutes.
- 1:52Here we go. I am so excited to have a long
- 1:55time. Friend joined the show.
- 1:57Tyler Reddick. So Tyler The last time you and I
- 2:01race together, we were on the north side of Nashville,
- 2:05Tennessee. You were just a young kid and we
- 2:08were racing dirt cars together. But uh look at you now brother.
- 2:12You're a NASCAR winter, you're a superstar, how you doing?
- 2:17I'm doing great. It's great.
- 2:19Great to see a great catch up with ya.
- 2:21Yeah, it's crazy how things have moved along and Yeah.
- 2:27You know dreams dreams do seem to come true every now and again
- 2:30but it's really crazy that you know, think back on all those
- 2:34times as a dirt track and getting to see each other and
- 2:36race against each other, for sure.
- 2:38They they got an Aerosmith song. It says, life's a journey tell
- 2:43me, tell me about that quick Journey between those dirt
- 2:48racing days and and the dream that seems so far away.
- 2:52You know, I want to quit running these bull rings.
- 2:55I don't want to become A NASCAR race car driver.
- 2:59Just tell me real quickly. You know, what was that process?
- 3:02Dirt card or what? Next?
- 3:04What next and here you are. Yeah.
- 3:06You know, I would, you know, like those reason a lot with
- 3:10with, you know, with loose soil. What about lies their National,
- 3:14you know, trying to hit all the big events running late models
- 3:17and through doing all that got connected with with your good
- 3:21friends, Ken Schrader and he was like I think you should come off
- 3:24then, you know, hop in my stock car and So you know we've worked
- 3:27it out and I got to run a couple races with him on the ark aside
- 3:31at Mobile Alabama, was my first-ever asphalt race and then
- 3:35we went to Salem and I got to run that race as well and I was
- 3:39pretty much a fish out of water for those races certain things
- 3:43were there, but just understanding asphalt racing in
- 3:45general is very different. So think about 70 months go by
- 3:50and I you know we're going to run a canine race, it rocket
- 3:53Hammond is car and that was pretty much it.
- 3:56We can that kind of changed everything we went in there we
- 3:58qualified third. The fifth somewhere in that
- 4:01range just kind of hung out in the top five the entire race
- 4:05didn't really do anything special, the first half the
- 4:07race. Just kind of was was there
- 4:09wasn't really leading wasn't really doing anything crazy.
- 4:13But yeah, you know, the second half of that race.
- 4:15We kind of went from fifth to Fourth and fourth to Third.
- 4:18And I remember probably 20 laps to go getting around Corey
- 4:22LaJoie and this may be as no shock to you but I started
- 4:26moving. Off the bottom, I got the point.
- 4:27The tires got so high, I couldn't the bottom anymore, I
- 4:29didn't but I said screw it. I'm just going to go, I'm just
- 4:33gonna start moving up the racetrack and let's start trying
- 4:35hit the wall in three and four and one and two.
- 4:37So I just kept moving up, moving up and right now, Brett Moffitt
- 4:40and and won that race on the final lap and pretty spectacular
- 4:44crashing fashion. You know?
- 4:46So, you know, kind of the day that changed everything and they
- 4:49got me lined up with Brad Keselowski on a part-time
- 4:52schedule and you know, for had my three years and truck Add
- 4:56enough success to full and part-time gig has Chip ganassi
- 4:59racing Wii my first year there, which, which helped Propel me to
- 5:03Junior, Motorsports winning. Winning a championship there,
- 5:06then are TR. And from that point on everyone,
- 5:08kind of knows, I was at Hershey our cup whatever.
- 5:10But you know, that was kind of the journey and it really the
- 5:13asphalt real journey really got kick-started by by Schrader and
- 5:16his group and then willing to work with someone.
- 5:19So green is I was, you know, I really put them through a lot,
- 5:23but you know it really paid off. So you know, that Journey that
- 5:28you took, we watched, you know, up in North Wilkesboro, the big
- 5:33All-Star Weekend. What a great nickname.
- 5:35This is is kid named Butterbean, you know, we get those
- 5:39nicknames, you know, mines are Herminator, you know, these
- 5:42Southern nicknames, but this kids, the real deal.
- 5:44He's a great race car driver. So he basically did what you
- 5:49did. He outruns some great race car
- 5:51drivers last night. These kids look at you and want
- 5:57to be. You did you pay attention to the
- 5:59start of the all-star weekend at all?
- 6:02What do you think about this? This All-Star late-model stocks,
- 6:07the stock cars last night at Wilkesboro.
- 6:10Yeah, I'm actually really glad you asked me, and I thought her
- 6:12neck pain, made the trip up there yesterday afternoon, and
- 6:16we got to catch the tail end of qualifying, but we got to, we
- 6:19stuck around for the first two features.
- 6:21I really want to stick around for the superb.
- 6:23Teacher at the end of the night, but I know is already pushing my
- 6:26luck being gone all day. A new Alexa, excuse me, that's
- 6:32your cut, go, whatever. I do, I need to get home.
- 6:51As I look at you now it is been a lot of fun for me to watch how
- 6:56far you've come and I've heard everything word on the street.
- 7:01I can tell you're physically fit but they tell me that you work
- 7:05extremely hard inside, you know, your team, whether it's on the
- 7:12simulator. Like I said your chiseled out,
- 7:15you're doing everything right? Tell me what it's like to be in
- 7:19a high end. Michael Jordan, Denny Hamlin run
- 7:24team. What do you do every day to have
- 7:26everybody brag on you, that you put a lot of work in inside the
- 7:29shop? Well, I mean the week kind of
- 7:33fly by honestly and I think, you know project that is just how
- 7:36much goes on every week. Not just for me but the whole
- 7:38team they when does a really good job of Of really
- 7:43communicating. And I think that that allows us
- 7:46to make the Leaps and Bounds that we've been making in the
- 7:48short time that we've been together so far.
- 7:50You know, so it's the team does a really good job with with with
- 7:54you know, I never really was a meeting person but we do have a
- 7:57lot of meetings during the week here and I find all of them very
- 8:00beneficial and useful that's the whole point of the meeting,
- 8:03right? So everyone here at the team
- 8:05does a really good job of debriefing, you know, me and
- 8:07Bubba and the in the Roku do a good job of debriefing going
- 8:10over the race weekend and they brought Jersey is in place here,
- 8:14kind of head of head of competition.
- 8:16Does a really good job of extracting information out of us
- 8:18and giving us, you know, the the template if you will to really
- 8:21have a good platform to communicate and then you know
- 8:24again we really communicate well with Joe Gibbs Racing.
- 8:26We go down and debrief the post. Guys go over what you know what
- 8:30we thought of the race weekend. You know we share a lot of
- 8:32information with one another and so haven't you know those six
- 8:35teams to be able to reflect on the weekend before the ER the
- 8:38day before you know really is beneficial.
- 8:40And you know we have We have a good team here that goes up.
- 8:44We have over a lot of information leading into the
- 8:46races, there's not a whole lot for don't close for obviously
- 8:49you know the cars have changed a lot since since the 90s.
- 8:51But you know, we do spend a lot of time going over, pre-event
- 8:55information. And then, you know, the same
- 8:57time that we put in every week is very, very useful.
- 9:00He already has a great simulation program and great
- 9:03people that really run that and manage it, you know, Drew
- 9:06Herring Ryan Truex. I think even David Hawksworth is
- 9:11done some work. For clarity getting the Whip or
- 9:13scar where it needs to be given us, the right information,
- 9:16there's a lot of parts and pieces.
- 9:17Make it all work, for sure. And that's just on the team
- 9:20side. Then I try and find time to go
- 9:21work out and stay in the good shape that I've really built up
- 9:24over the last five, six years with everyone that I've been
- 9:26training with. So yeah.
- 9:29All that being said, then it's normally a Friday and you're
- 9:32heading to the racetrack and then you go to the racetrack and
- 9:34write it out. So do you find those meetings,
- 9:38intimidating, or therapeutic? Because you said, you used to
- 9:41never do. Before and you know with with
- 9:44all my years in, NASCAR usually, when we were having a meeting
- 9:49that meant, I was getting my ass chewed out.
- 9:51But when you started doing these meetings intimidating or
- 9:56therapeutic, it's extremely useful.
- 10:00You know, I mean, they aren't there.
- 10:02We would debrief after the weekend with, you know, the kids
- 10:04that, you know, are all of our Affiliates.
- 10:06So, I mean, we would, we would have that.
- 10:08But just the extra steps that this place takes that I feel
- 10:11like is really gone. Official, we know we share a lot
- 10:13of good information and it really helps, you know, bring me
- 10:16and Bubba to a place to have a conversation to be able to, you
- 10:20know, share our differences, in opinions, or just different
- 10:23differences, in perspective of those, this situation, or how we
- 10:27approach a tire run like a North Wilkesboro or how, you know, we
- 10:31approach a race at this track or the other.
- 10:33So, I think everyone really does a good job of communicating here
- 10:36and just how we prep and take our car to the racetrack.
- 10:39Really thinks that, you know, make gives gives me and Bobby
- 10:42the opportunity to really be able to mimic each other if
- 10:45we're not, you know, with one of us has a, we want to be we want
- 10:48to change up your driving style or cars or clothes really close.
- 10:51So that allows us to really change your driving cells really
- 10:53compared to one another and I think that really helped push us
- 10:56in the right direction. Yeah, so it sounds like it.
- 10:59You like these meetings. Okay.
- 11:00So look, we're 13 races into the year and you were with you
- 11:04started with a new team you came from Richard Childress to this
- 11:08team You got to Phoenix and Buddy.
- 11:12You lit on fire. You run third at Phoenix and
- 11:15fifth and then you win Circuit of the America you go on.
- 11:19You're still running really good.
- 11:21You got six top, tens, your tenth and the points.
- 11:25So, when you go to that, that Phoenix race for, you know, you
- 11:27got everything going in the right direction.
- 11:30Is there any one thing? On the car or you or the team
- 11:34that let you on fire, because it's very hard to run in the top
- 11:3810 every single week. Is there any one thing that you
- 11:42put your finger on that? Got you up to speed, honestly?
- 11:46No, I mean, it wasn't a Phoenix. I mean, it was from the first
- 11:49time I was in the car. It certainly America's for a
- 11:52tire test for Goodyear, way back in January.
- 11:56You know, the the way that's cars drive, they drive really
- 11:59good. It just seems like everyone has
- 12:01a good understanding none. The tracks Shankar.
- 12:04And yeah, the results weren't necessarily there.
- 12:05It Daytona, obviously we crashed out of that race and fun Hannah,
- 12:08we fell out of that race as well, but even if those
- 12:11racetrack for finishes weren't there, but like I could just
- 12:14tell just what we had, you know, week to week to week.
- 12:18I mean, it's pretty much been every week honestly, like the
- 12:20speed is there in our cars. Just, you know sometimes things
- 12:24happen in this part of racing or not.
- 12:27Expecting that kind of take you out of the race or something
- 12:30goes awry on on pissed off, whatever it might be but like it
- 12:33really pretty much every week with this team since since they
- 12:36wanted The Clash, I've been really really pleased with with
- 12:39the, the outright speed that we bring you the race track.
- 12:42So it's just a matter of putting those, those finishes together
- 12:45and surviving those crazy, late race caution.
- 12:48So there's a, there's a really good song.
- 12:50It says, Hey, Now You're an all star, get your game on.
- 12:53So listen, man, you're an All-Star.
- 12:55You're locked into The big All-Star week up in North
- 12:59Wilkesboro. This cannot be downplayed.
- 13:02It's 1 million dollars to win. It looks like as Nascar has been
- 13:08treading water over the last 15 years, looks like short tracks
- 13:12are on the come back. There's a seems to me.
- 13:15There's a big societal shift. You're going you're going to
- 13:18Wilkes Carl because you're an All-Star, you're good.
- 13:21You're locked in. What does that mean to you?
- 13:25That that you're so good that you're one of the boys.
- 13:28I always thought that found that.
- 13:29Very cool. How do you feel about that?
- 13:33That is definitely cool. I mean, I've remembered the in
- 13:36the last three previous years that, you know, I've been in the
- 13:40cup series, I wasn't having to fight my way into the altar,
- 13:42right? And, you know, Bristol, it
- 13:45didn't pan out, it's Texas, the first year it did, but we, you
- 13:50know, we just didn't quite have the speed to go in 10 the last
- 13:52year at Texas, kind of going forward to get in the race and
- 13:55we crash and go home early. So yeah, it is really nice to
- 13:59have those winds and be locked into the All-Star Race.
- 14:02Yes, I do feel like again, you know, we did this, we were at
- 14:07the tire test for Goodyear and North Wilkesboro earlier in the
- 14:10year and I was really really really pleased with the handling
- 14:13and pace of our car over run. So I feel like based off that
- 14:18you know just just just having that little bit extra experience
- 14:20to I think we're going to be in really good shape when we get
- 14:22there. So I'm very excited about one
- 14:25being locked into just just how good that test went for us.
- 14:29You know, the very unique track and I love that I got, I got the
- 14:31opportunity through toy Toyota and a good year to go out there.
- 14:34Get slapped on the traffic tarah.
- 14:36I'm smiling right now because I'm like a dad watching a kid
- 14:40grow up your you're perfect in this era because you're very You
- 14:45know you're very digital orientated.
- 14:47You're always talking about my tire test my you know you're
- 14:51doing it. All right.
- 14:52I mean this is pretty incredible.
- 14:54That it is true that you put the work in.
- 14:58You're physically fit. You you're up with digital you
- 15:01under. Do you understand all these
- 15:03graphs and simulation like a Formula?
- 15:061 driver. Where did you learn all this
- 15:09agent just from the time put in into you know, studying you know
- 15:13like Ears up your ears past. You know, when I had to really
- 15:17put a lot of work and get better at the road courses, you know,
- 15:19we go right to the comparing to the best of the best at the
- 15:21time, you know, preparing to chase, very to Danny.
- 15:23Martin Truex, Junior, Kyle Larson crisper Bell.
- 15:26You know, and because of the information that's out there
- 15:28through smt the information collected through, you know,
- 15:33through the passes that they are in the teens have that affects
- 15:35access to, you know, gave me a great platform to be able to get
- 15:38better. So just in the day and age of
- 15:40NASCAR now, you really have to be able to understand.
- 15:43You know, all those 50 60 Graph that you might see in a weekend
- 15:47and pick the ones that make the most sense for that situation
- 15:49that you have and dive into it and make the adjustments.
- 15:53So obviously every car is going to be a little different even in
- 15:56the next Genera on the set up and whatnot.
- 15:58But still, you know, you have to look at that stuff in the in
- 16:01just just get your head thinking a little bit differently than
- 16:04you normally would. Okay.
- 16:05I know how this guy likes to grab this car into the corner
- 16:07and he's making it work. I got be able to adapt to that
- 16:09quickly. And so being able to understand
- 16:11all that stuff available, well listen.
- 16:15There is kids. If you want to be like him, you
- 16:17better, you better understand how to work a simulator and get
- 16:21into the digital age. Tyler listen, thank you so much,
- 16:27do good at Wilkesboro, 1 million dollars, go in and like to say,
- 16:31I'm sure you spend your mom out for it.
- 16:34Thank you for coming on to Kenny Wallace show.
- 16:36And remember, everybody, we are in, we are in podcast form.
- 16:39Check us out on iTunes Spotify. Remember to, like, And
- 16:43subscribe? So Tyler.
- 16:44Do good at Wilkesboro win 1 million dollars and give it all
- 16:48of your wife. Yeah I'm right for here.
- 16:53Love you buddy. Thank you.
- 16:54Thanks guys. See you
