- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. Is this episode number two hundred
- 0:18Speaker 1: and thirty nine, and today on the show, we're chatting
- 0:22Speaker 1: with Lee Ellis and Drew Carroll from Seque Productions about
- 0:25Speaker 1: the unbelievable deer hunting success they're having in the suburbs
- 0:29Speaker 1: of Atlanta, Georgia. Before we get into the main show, though,
- 0:49Speaker 1: we need to do kind of a little intro to
- 0:52Speaker 1: the intro, beginning first with a thank you to our
- 0:54Speaker 1: partners at Lacrosse Boots for their support of this podcast.
- 0:58Speaker 1: I've now worn my new pair of Alpha Burly Pro
- 1:01Speaker 1: knee high rubber boots on hunts this year in Montana,
- 1:04Speaker 1: North Dakota, and Michigan. I've worn them in temperatures all
- 1:08Speaker 1: the way up to the nineties and down into the fifties.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Have crossed rivers, I've slid down canyons, I've climbed up trees,
- 1:14Speaker 1: I've snuck their standing bean fields, and through all that,
- 1:17Speaker 1: I've been comfortable. I've been dry, and I've left as
- 1:20Speaker 1: minimal of ascent print as I think you can get
- 1:22Speaker 1: with a boot. So all in all, these boots have
- 1:25Speaker 1: been great for me so far, and all the other
- 1:27Speaker 1: Lacrosse boots I've worn over the last I don't know,
- 1:29Speaker 1: ten fifteen plus years they've been terrific as well. So
- 1:34Speaker 1: all that's to say that if you are in the
- 1:35Speaker 1: market for a new pair of deer hunting boots, my
- 1:37Speaker 1: suggestion would be to point you in the direction of
- 1:40Speaker 1: Lacrosse Footwear dot Com to check out the options they
- 1:43Speaker 1: have available. In other news, as many of you know,
- 1:47Speaker 1: Wired Hunt is now a part of meat Eater, Inc.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It is this new media company founded by Stephen Ronnella
- 1:53Speaker 1: which I am now a part of. Two and our
- 1:55Speaker 1: big studying announcement this week is that the newest season
- 1:59Speaker 1: of the Meat Eater TV show has just launched as
- 2:01Speaker 1: a Netflix original And this is the first hunting show
- 2:05Speaker 1: ever to be in Netflix original So this is a
- 2:07Speaker 1: really big deal for the hunting community and and also
- 2:11Speaker 1: just you know, a great show too, so it's neat.
- 2:14Speaker 1: It's cool, especially that I'm actually featured in this season
- 2:17Speaker 1: as my caribou hunt from last year's in there. It's
- 2:20Speaker 1: two episodes. I got to check them out a couple
- 2:22Speaker 1: of days ago, and I might be biased since I
- 2:25Speaker 1: was in them, but I think they turned out incredibly well. Um,
- 2:29Speaker 1: it was a pretty moving to get to watch that
- 2:31Speaker 1: and relive that. So i'd encourage you guys to check
- 2:33Speaker 1: out the new season. It's right up there on Netflix
- 2:36Speaker 1: Meat Eater with Steve Ronnella. I think you'll enjoy it.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And that now brings us to the real reason we're
- 2:42Speaker 1: here today, which is to talk dear and specifically talk
- 2:47Speaker 1: about suburban bow hunting. In this episode and this one,
- 2:51Speaker 1: I think is is really really unique and it's especially
- 2:54Speaker 1: interesting as these guys Lee and Drew, they've developed a
- 2:57Speaker 1: set of hunting strategies that have allowed them to target
- 3:00Speaker 1: truly world class deer right in the neighborhoods and suburbs
- 3:05Speaker 1: of a major metro era. It's it's fascinating stuff. And
- 3:08Speaker 1: whether you're targeting mature or quote unquote big bucks yourself,
- 3:13Speaker 1: or if you're simply trying to just learn a deer
- 3:14Speaker 1: hunt and you'd be happy to put any deer in
- 3:16Speaker 1: the freezer, I think there's something for you to learn
- 3:19Speaker 1: here today. Now that's said, if you're really excited about
- 3:23Speaker 1: that content. If you want to skip our long rambling
- 3:27Speaker 1: pregame show with my buddy Dan Johnson and me as
- 3:30Speaker 1: we discuss our recent deer hunts and plans, you can
- 3:33Speaker 1: fast forward about twenty five minutes or so from here.
- 3:36Speaker 1: But if you've got the time and the patients to
- 3:39Speaker 1: delve into the life and adventures of myself and Dan
- 3:43Speaker 1: nine fingers Johnson, stick around, because here we go. All right,
- 3:51Speaker 1: welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you
- 3:54Speaker 1: by Onyx, and today we're talking about something very different
- 3:59Speaker 1: than the usual. We're talking suburban deer hunting. We're joined
- 4:06Speaker 1: by the guys from Seek One Productions. These guys are
- 4:08Speaker 1: out of Atlanta, Georgia, and they are they're actually hunting
- 4:13Speaker 1: the suburbs of Atlanta, like neighborhoods, backyards. They're they're killing
- 4:17Speaker 1: some absolutely amazing deer down there. They're doing it on
- 4:20Speaker 1: small properties with tons of people around, bizarre situations, um,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and they're they're absolutely getting the job done. Have you
- 4:28Speaker 1: seen any other videos, don Yeah, it's it's crazy what
- 4:33Speaker 1: they do. And you know, I'll give them credit. They
- 4:36Speaker 1: do some pretty amazing things as far as access and
- 4:40Speaker 1: strategy and these micro food plots and cool things like that.
- 4:45Speaker 1: But it's crazy watching a hunting video with a swing
- 4:50Speaker 1: set in the background. Yeah, it's it's it's a little
- 4:55Speaker 1: different than the corn fields and the wide vistas that
- 4:58Speaker 1: we sometimes get, but it's It's pretty cool though, because
- 5:03Speaker 1: I feel like what these guys are doing kind of
- 5:05Speaker 1: shows that you can still get out and hunt and
- 5:08Speaker 1: have a great time even if you don't have a
- 5:10Speaker 1: big family farm, or even if you don't live out
- 5:12Speaker 1: in the country where there's a bunch of land. Um.
- 5:15Speaker 1: You know, it comes back down to that whole access challenge, right,
- 5:17Speaker 1: So many people are struggling to find places to hunt. Um,
- 5:21Speaker 1: maybe they're not close to public land or whatever. Here's
- 5:24Speaker 1: a group of folks that are showing you can get
- 5:26Speaker 1: it done in the neighborhood. Um, And I think that's
- 5:29Speaker 1: that's kind of encouraging, I think for a lot of people.
- 5:31Speaker 1: And I actually got my start bow hunting in this
- 5:34Speaker 1: kind of scenario. I know I've told the story before,
- 5:38Speaker 1: but I started bow hunting on my parents three acres
- 5:41Speaker 1: that we lived on in a neighborhood and the first
- 5:44Speaker 1: year I ever killed, I killed it right after two
- 5:47Speaker 1: people and their dog walked through our property. Right in
- 5:49Speaker 1: front of me and I got out of the blind.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I was all upset, huffing and puffing over to him. Um,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and then yeah, a half hour later, here comes this
- 5:56Speaker 1: little buck. So these guys, I think, have got some
- 6:01Speaker 1: very interesting things to share, like you said, interesting tactics, um,
- 6:05Speaker 1: interesting solutions to getting access. So I'm pumped about it.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I'm excited to have this conversation. So this is gonna
- 6:13Speaker 1: be This is gonna be a great podcast for anybody
- 6:16Speaker 1: who maybe even is has it been hunting, or doesn't
- 6:22Speaker 1: think they have the deer where they live to go
- 6:25Speaker 1: out and find it like these guys do. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:28Speaker 1: I think this is it's a great entry point for people.
- 6:31Speaker 1: You know, just go and knock on some doors right
- 6:33Speaker 1: where you live and you might be a hunt right there.
- 6:36Speaker 1: So it's gonna be interesting and it's funny. I actually
- 6:40Speaker 1: know a guy who, you know, he's got a hard
- 6:43Speaker 1: time getting out Tory hunts. His main hunting property is
- 6:45Speaker 1: like an hour and a half away. It's hard to get,
- 6:47Speaker 1: you know, to find the time right You've got family obligations.
- 6:50Speaker 1: And if only this guy had a little property right
- 6:53Speaker 1: in the suburbs, right where he lived, and he could hunt,
- 6:56Speaker 1: you know, just for an hour or two in between
- 6:58Speaker 1: when he's got time with the family and the kids.
- 6:59Speaker 1: If only that guy could hear this podcast and learn
- 7:03Speaker 1: about it, he might actually hunt on opening day or
- 7:06Speaker 1: the second day of the of the season, or the
- 7:08Speaker 1: third day of this season. Do you know what a
- 7:09Speaker 1: guy like that? Dan? Yeah, I know him. Oh is
- 7:18Speaker 1: it too soon? Is it too close to home? Does that?
- 7:21Speaker 1: Does that guy have three kids? I have a wife
- 7:24Speaker 1: who has two jobs too, and only nine fingers, and
- 7:29Speaker 1: only nine fingers. That's me. It's it's it's been crazy, though, dude,
- 7:35Speaker 1: it's been crazy. Talk to me about it. I just
- 7:41Speaker 1: I mean, the weather was really good today. Is we're
- 7:45Speaker 1: recording this on a what a Wednesday? And it's hot now, right,
- 7:50Speaker 1: So I'm not going to go out tonight, But um, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
- 7:55Speaker 1: and Sunday my wife has to work, okay, so that
- 7:58Speaker 1: means I don't get to go out. However, I'm I
- 8:00Speaker 1: think I'm gonna be able to get out Saturday morning
- 8:03Speaker 1: and Sunday morning and just do some some sneak attacks
- 8:07Speaker 1: type stuff. But my big news is that this past
- 8:13Speaker 1: weekend and I broke I broke a cardinal rule, but
- 8:16Speaker 1: I had to one cardinal Yeah. So my cardinal rule, dude,
- 8:20Speaker 1: do not go into the timber until you're gonna hunt it,
- 8:25Speaker 1: you know, in September. Don't just leave it alone. But
- 8:28Speaker 1: I haven't had that the opportunity to get out and
- 8:33Speaker 1: go change up my trail cameras off the summer mineral
- 8:36Speaker 1: sites and to the pinch points, the fence crossings, the
- 8:41Speaker 1: travel corridors you know down you know, the historically good
- 8:44Speaker 1: places for the deer season. I haven't made that trail
- 8:47Speaker 1: camera transition. So I said I had. Here's here's my options.
- 8:51Speaker 1: One is, as these deer just straight up stop using
- 8:56Speaker 1: the mineral stations, I'm gonna have no intel going to
- 9:00Speaker 1: my hunts, right because I you know, just like a
- 9:03Speaker 1: lot of us, we use trail cameras to you know,
- 9:05Speaker 1: help us figure out where these deer are at. So
- 9:08Speaker 1: I said, I'm gonna run that risk. I'm gonna go
- 9:11Speaker 1: in and i'm gonna do my trail camera switch the
- 9:14Speaker 1: day obviously, the day before opening day. Now, knowing that
- 9:18Speaker 1: I wasn't gonna hunt for that farm for two weeks
- 9:21Speaker 1: made me feel a little better. But what makes me
- 9:24Speaker 1: feel really good is of some of the intel that
- 9:28Speaker 1: I got off those trail cameras on this last trip,
- 9:31Speaker 1: and the fact that now they're in a really good
- 9:33Speaker 1: position for the upcoming season. So it's I take it
- 9:37Speaker 1: away as a win. I don't think I intruded too much.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I mean it has rained since then, so I think
- 9:44Speaker 1: it just kind of was the perfect storm, if that
- 9:46Speaker 1: makes sense. Yeah, and you certainly are doing better than
- 9:50Speaker 1: a lot. I mean a lot of people are at
- 9:51Speaker 1: tempted to go in there like twice a week checking
- 9:54Speaker 1: their cameras and things like that. So making making one
- 9:58Speaker 1: quick check, I think you're uh, you're doing all right.
- 10:01Speaker 1: And to your point, sounds like you've got some great
- 10:03Speaker 1: intel that that should inform those future hunts. So we
- 10:05Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta hear. I mean I sort of
- 10:09Speaker 1: know about some excetting stuff, but I need to hear more. Right. So,
- 10:14Speaker 1: I got a picture of dork Hard Horn on the
- 10:19Speaker 1: September right at last light. I mean it would have
- 10:23Speaker 1: been not shooting light, but just right at the tail end.
- 10:27Speaker 1: So this is the first for him to be this.
- 10:32Speaker 1: You know, it's a buck I've been watching since two
- 10:34Speaker 1: thousand and thirteen, right, and now he's on my trail
- 10:38Speaker 1: cameras a lot more. And he's hard horned right so,
- 10:42Speaker 1: and he's close to daylight. So we'll see what happens
- 10:45Speaker 1: when I go and check my trail cameras, probably next Friday,
- 10:49Speaker 1: after I get off work, before I go in for
- 10:51Speaker 1: that that evening hunt of kind of what's you know,
- 10:55Speaker 1: what the area is telling me. But I have dork
- 11:00Speaker 1: who as of is in the area. I have another
- 11:06Speaker 1: buck that was the twenty three or six who's definitely
- 11:10Speaker 1: a shooter. He's a four year old ten with junk.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I posted a picture of him on social media and
- 11:17Speaker 1: he's a shooter. Yep. Passed on him last year as
- 11:21Speaker 1: a three year old, probably in the one fifties. He
- 11:23Speaker 1: didn't make too many. Yeah, he didn't make a big
- 11:26Speaker 1: jump last year from from last year to this year,
- 11:30Speaker 1: except for he's got some more junk. He's just a
- 11:32Speaker 1: little bit bigger. But I'm saying that buck somewhere around
- 11:35Speaker 1: the one low one fifties, and he's got some He's
- 11:39Speaker 1: got split brows, which is pretty cool, with some some
- 11:42Speaker 1: junk coming off from a couple, some junk coming off
- 11:45Speaker 1: one of the antlers a couple. You know, I think
- 11:49Speaker 1: I have my even one or two four year olds
- 11:51Speaker 1: that are still around. One's up here, like one forty
- 11:53Speaker 1: class eight pointer um, and then another ten that's kind
- 11:59Speaker 1: of in the area. And then you know, you heard
- 12:01Speaker 1: me talk about the mega giant, you know that that
- 12:04Speaker 1: really big one that I send you pictures of and uh,
- 12:09Speaker 1: that we talked about on the last time, the last
- 12:12Speaker 1: podcast we were able too. He stuck around all the
- 12:16Speaker 1: way until that notorious shift right that we talked about,
- 12:21Speaker 1: the September shift when they when they when the deer
- 12:23Speaker 1: start to go hard horn. And then I didn't get
- 12:27Speaker 1: a picture of him since September eleven or twelfth, I
- 12:32Speaker 1: think it was, so no pictures of him. However, that
- 12:35Speaker 1: same exact thing happened last year. Right now, I want
- 12:39Speaker 1: you to tell me this. Have you ever had a
- 12:41Speaker 1: moment where you're flipping through last year's trail cameras and
- 12:45Speaker 1: something clicked and you're like, oh my god, I know
- 12:48Speaker 1: now what I need to do. Have you ever had
- 12:49Speaker 1: a moment like that. I've had some similar things like that. Yeah,
- 12:54Speaker 1: So I had that moment, and I think I know
- 12:58Speaker 1: where this deer shifted to. Right, there's no needs for
- 13:02Speaker 1: him to come up that far from where I have
- 13:04Speaker 1: my trail cameras to where I now know or I
- 13:07Speaker 1: shouldn't say no, but where I think he's betting. I
- 13:10Speaker 1: really think that he is in a really tight spot
- 13:16Speaker 1: that is hard to get to if you're a lazy
- 13:20Speaker 1: hard access, if you're a lazy hunter, and what I
- 13:22Speaker 1: mean hart is if you're gonna take the easy way in.
- 13:25Speaker 1: But I think I can back door into his betting
- 13:28Speaker 1: area on a morning hunt and potentially catch him coming
- 13:31Speaker 1: back into where I'm guessing he's betting, right because last
- 13:37Speaker 1: year I have a trail camera picture of him a
- 13:40Speaker 1: couple of times coming off of this ridge that I'm
- 13:42Speaker 1: talking about, right in front of a trail camera early
- 13:47Speaker 1: early October. So are you thinking you're gonna go try
- 13:50Speaker 1: to take a morning stab at him early? Yes, I'm
- 13:54Speaker 1: gonna say next week. Is showing a day or a
- 13:59Speaker 1: day a in a morning of an east wind before
- 14:02Speaker 1: a front moves through. Potentially then or two days after
- 14:08Speaker 1: that is a north northeast wind that I would need
- 14:11Speaker 1: to backdoor it in there. So it has to be
- 14:14Speaker 1: something in the east. It can't be a southeast, but
- 14:16Speaker 1: it can be a straight east northeast or north northeast
- 14:20Speaker 1: maybe even straight north, depending on if I can get
- 14:22Speaker 1: my trees stan into one of those um in a
- 14:25Speaker 1: tree that doesn't blow over top of the trail that
- 14:27Speaker 1: I think he's going to use. And man, like, that's
- 14:31Speaker 1: all I've been thinking about since it happened two days ago.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Like flipping through those pictures, it's just like click whole ship. Like,
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'm why didn't I think of this before? Man, that's
- 14:45Speaker 1: that buck now. I think it's important to point out,
- 14:48Speaker 1: you know, we'd like to talk that you're typically just
- 14:51Speaker 1: targeting age class type deer, mature deer. That's super challenging.
- 14:57Speaker 1: It's it's the way we usually to do things. But
- 14:58Speaker 1: sometimes see a deer that just like captivates your imagination
- 15:03Speaker 1: because of how unique or bizarre or cool that dear looks.
- 15:07Speaker 1: And this dear, right, I mean, this is like a
- 15:09Speaker 1: once in a lifetime deer, even for a guy like
- 15:12Speaker 1: you out in Iowa. Don't you think I mean this
- 15:14Speaker 1: is a special special deer. Yeah, it's a special deer
- 15:19Speaker 1: from a from a rack perspective, right, But I'm not
- 15:21Speaker 1: really thinking at it like that. Yeah, I mean I
- 15:25Speaker 1: may be making my decisions based off that. The only
- 15:28Speaker 1: the only thing is is that I was talking with
- 15:32Speaker 1: a guy a while back, and he goes, unless you're dedicated,
- 15:35Speaker 1: dedicating yourself to one specific deer for an entire season,
- 15:40Speaker 1: then you then you have they're forced to be very
- 15:43Speaker 1: cautious in your decision making. However, guys like me and
- 15:48Speaker 1: you know, I assume you unless you're going all in
- 15:50Speaker 1: on holy Field. We we put together a hit list,
- 15:55Speaker 1: and this guy is saying that if you have a
- 15:58Speaker 1: target deer, why not go win, go in aggressive to him,
- 16:02Speaker 1: because the worst thing that's going to happen is that
- 16:05Speaker 1: you'll blow him out. You'll you'll you'll he won't show
- 16:09Speaker 1: you'll fail, or you'll get him. And if you fail,
- 16:13Speaker 1: then you just go onto one of your other deer
- 16:14Speaker 1: that you've that you've put on your hit list, right
- 16:17Speaker 1: or that, and you start that process all over again. Well, Hey,
- 16:20Speaker 1: let's locate one on trail camera, move in for the kill,
- 16:22Speaker 1: and play cat and mouse with him until you blow
- 16:25Speaker 1: him out he doesn't show up, or you get him,
- 16:27Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So I'm taking this kind
- 16:30Speaker 1: of new approach where I feel like I'm just gonna
- 16:33Speaker 1: be aggressive until I fail so much that I learned
- 16:37Speaker 1: or it works. Yeah, and I think I think the
- 16:40Speaker 1: key is if you have those options right, you're in
- 16:44Speaker 1: a situation where if this, if this goes under, you
- 16:47Speaker 1: do have lots of other spots you can get into,
- 16:50Speaker 1: lots of other deer you be interested in chasing. Um,
- 16:53Speaker 1: you know, like a situation like the Holy Field proper
- 16:56Speaker 1: to m on. There's only ever been like one mature
- 16:58Speaker 1: buck a year that moves through there. So it's like,
- 17:00Speaker 1: if you don't kill that dear, if you educate that dear,
- 17:03Speaker 1: you're done for the year. So I've gotten my my, my,
- 17:07Speaker 1: my thinking has shifted more and more to the point
- 17:11Speaker 1: you're making that if you're in a scenario where you've
- 17:14Speaker 1: got options, start swinging for the fences sometimes and to
- 17:18Speaker 1: your point, learn something from it, even if you you
- 17:21Speaker 1: bugger it out, but you probably learned something along the way. Um,
- 17:24Speaker 1: but you know, you've gotta understand your situation. Sometimes that's
- 17:28Speaker 1: a good idea. Sometimes you gotta play is safe, but
- 17:31Speaker 1: it's kind of fun to sometimes go for those home runs.
- 17:35Speaker 1: I do not blame you if I wanted to think that.
- 17:39Speaker 1: The cool thing though, is that it's also another thing
- 17:43Speaker 1: that's forced me to hunt this way is I only
- 17:45Speaker 1: have one tree stand pre hung for this year, only one.
- 17:49Speaker 1: So I have other spots fromed out and ready to go,
- 17:53Speaker 1: but only one tree stand hung. So what that's telling
- 17:57Speaker 1: me is, Yes, if I can't find a deer on
- 18:00Speaker 1: trail camera, I'm gonna I might go sit on this
- 18:03Speaker 1: particular uh downwind of a popular betting area, right, and
- 18:08Speaker 1: I've always had good um the buck I met uh
- 18:12Speaker 1: that that I hit the branch right and deflected the
- 18:16Speaker 1: arrow last year, and the where I passed um where
- 18:20Speaker 1: I passed the one buck last year that got hard horn.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Pictures of that I posted on social media. That's all
- 18:26Speaker 1: downwind of a popular betting area where I have really
- 18:30Speaker 1: good success. So that's kind of a backup plan if
- 18:33Speaker 1: I need it. But this is forcing me to make
- 18:36Speaker 1: decisions based off deer move where the deer are at
- 18:40Speaker 1: and not where historically they've been. Right. So we all
- 18:44Speaker 1: have those those those uh tree stand locations that we
- 18:49Speaker 1: have sitting there and every year they're going to be
- 18:52Speaker 1: there because it's just a good area. But I don't
- 18:54Speaker 1: have those hung right now, so so now I can
- 18:57Speaker 1: I can make all those decisions on a macro level,
- 19:01Speaker 1: if that makes sense. Yeah, No to the I think
- 19:05Speaker 1: we had this conversation a few weeks ago with Zach
- 19:07Speaker 1: kind of the idea of if you don't have stands
- 19:10Speaker 1: up already, if you're walking on the ground, or if
- 19:11Speaker 1: you're having to stand that day, you by default have
- 19:15Speaker 1: to pick the very best option for that specific moment
- 19:17Speaker 1: in time. Um, because there's no easy thing to fall
- 19:20Speaker 1: back on, which I think is a good thing. So
- 19:24Speaker 1: I'm excited for you. That's Uh, it's just one of
- 19:27Speaker 1: these things where, dude, I've I've harvested a deer in
- 19:31Speaker 1: the last two years. I'm in a place where I
- 19:36Speaker 1: have a I have a very unique and a buck
- 19:40Speaker 1: that only shows up once every five or six seven years, right,
- 19:44Speaker 1: that kind of quality. So I'm gonna go in after him,
- 19:48Speaker 1: and I'll I'll make my decisions based off of what
- 19:52Speaker 1: mother nature gives me for uh, you know, conditions and
- 19:59Speaker 1: sign and camera data, and I just make my decisions
- 20:03Speaker 1: based off that. And if nothing happens, man, I tried,
- 20:05Speaker 1: And if it happens, uh, you'll get a phone call.
- 20:08Speaker 1: But holy suppose, I'll hope you face time. Ma. I
- 20:13Speaker 1: want to see that face when that happens, because that
- 20:16Speaker 1: dear is insane. But again, like we always say, getting
- 20:22Speaker 1: pictures is the easy part. It is. It's a fun part,
- 20:25Speaker 1: but it's the easy part. Um Man, I know that
- 20:28Speaker 1: you've been in the timber or in the stand right, Yes, yes,
- 20:32Speaker 1: I've got out twice. Now you know today is the
- 20:35Speaker 1: third so I hunted the first in the second. Um,
- 20:39Speaker 1: nothing too terribly exciting to report on, except that, you
- 20:43Speaker 1: know the first night. Speaking of the holy Field scenaria,
- 20:46Speaker 1: I mentioned before, I want to go in and hunt
- 20:50Speaker 1: this property once we're holy Field is hopefully is. You know,
- 20:54Speaker 1: I still don't have a hundred percent confirmation I've seen
- 20:57Speaker 1: this buck in the summer, but I just don't know
- 20:59Speaker 1: for sure it was him or not. I don't have
- 21:01Speaker 1: pictures of him, of any of any mature bucks yet,
- 21:04Speaker 1: but there's only been one camera that I've been able
- 21:06Speaker 1: to check. So there's there's stuff still out there that
- 21:09Speaker 1: I don't know about. But I'm kind of operating right
- 21:12Speaker 1: now in the assumption that he's still alive. So I
- 21:14Speaker 1: went into this one spot. It's kind of like my
- 21:17Speaker 1: almost always, if I've got the right wind, I usually
- 21:19Speaker 1: hunt here on opening day. Of the last four years,
- 21:21Speaker 1: i've done that because it's it's easy to get to.
- 21:24Speaker 1: It's low impact, but it's a great early season spot.
- 21:27Speaker 1: You know. This year there's my oats and brassica food plot,
- 21:31Speaker 1: a little clover plot on the other side of it.
- 21:33Speaker 1: The tree im city in is an oak tree that
- 21:35Speaker 1: was dropping a ton of acorns this year and last
- 21:37Speaker 1: year put in the tiny water hole underneath the two.
- 21:40Speaker 1: So I had all of that in this little like
- 21:42Speaker 1: acre and a half area. Um, so, really really high
- 21:46Speaker 1: attraction value. And it's tight to this area that Holy
- 21:49Speaker 1: Field traditionally is betted, so it was worth a shot
- 21:52Speaker 1: try to get in there. I had a great wind
- 21:54Speaker 1: for it and snuck in there. I was feeling pretty
- 21:57Speaker 1: good about it. A bunch of doughs were moving through
- 21:59Speaker 1: the kind of a cool breeze. It was cloudy, it
- 22:02Speaker 1: was cooling down. Um A bunch of deer feeding around me.
- 22:06Speaker 1: But the one you know, this happens all the time,
- 22:09Speaker 1: the one direction that you don't want a deer to
- 22:11Speaker 1: go where they at least likely to go. This one
- 22:14Speaker 1: dough did and she got a whiff of me that
- 22:17Speaker 1: she didn't like, and she blew up and sent the
- 22:20Speaker 1: field clearing out. You know what, And speaking of that,
- 22:24Speaker 1: something I've noticed the last year or two is you know,
- 22:28Speaker 1: I've been using I've been doing all my basic scent
- 22:31Speaker 1: control type stuff, and then maybe five years ago or
- 22:35Speaker 1: six years ago, I started using an ozonics machine, and
- 22:38Speaker 1: then maybe two maybe three years ago, I started using
- 22:42Speaker 1: nose jammer. And right when I started doing those things,
- 22:46Speaker 1: I felt like magic, Like these deer were coming down
- 22:49Speaker 1: wind to me and they were just kind of smelling
- 22:53Speaker 1: a little something, and then kept on going. And then
- 22:55Speaker 1: last year I felt like they were getting a little
- 22:58Speaker 1: more impact, like they were coming down They're like, I
- 23:02Speaker 1: don't like this as much as I used to. And
- 23:03Speaker 1: then now this year this happens. I wonder, and I'm
- 23:07Speaker 1: not saying this is the case, but I'm starting to
- 23:09Speaker 1: wonder if these deer that have been on this farm
- 23:14Speaker 1: a long time, and I've been hunting this property for
- 23:16Speaker 1: years now using this stuff, if they are starting to
- 23:18Speaker 1: associate either the ozone smell or the nose jammers in
- 23:23Speaker 1: situation or something, if they're starting to associate that with
- 23:26Speaker 1: human danger now, because there's been enough situations where they've
- 23:29Speaker 1: smelled that and then seeing a person or smelt a
- 23:33Speaker 1: little bit of me or something like that. I'm wondering
- 23:35Speaker 1: if my little secret sauce is starting to become a
- 23:39Speaker 1: negative association for him. Um, I don't know. I'm not
- 23:43Speaker 1: saying that's case, but I'm just wondering it now because
- 23:45Speaker 1: I'm not getting away with as many downwind as and
- 23:48Speaker 1: encounters as I used to and I haven't changed anything. Um, yeah,
- 23:53Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, it's it's it's nature, right,
- 23:56Speaker 1: If something burns you a couple of times, it's nature's
- 24:00Speaker 1: way of educating themselves on You know, how many times
- 24:04Speaker 1: do you think it took the early human to figure
- 24:06Speaker 1: out that you can't touch fire? Buddy? You know what
- 24:08Speaker 1: I mean? Like until you learn that you can't touch
- 24:11Speaker 1: fire and it has to happen within all shapes and
- 24:14Speaker 1: forms of life. So I think I think you're a
- 24:20Speaker 1: percent right. I think there could be if you're using
- 24:23Speaker 1: it too much because you have a smaller property. Right, Yes,
- 24:26Speaker 1: you take the proper you take the proper um access
- 24:30Speaker 1: routes in, you take the proper scent precautions, but at
- 24:33Speaker 1: the same time, you're using that more on a smaller
- 24:37Speaker 1: property than let's say, someone like myself who has a
- 24:40Speaker 1: bigger property and may be using the same things but
- 24:44Speaker 1: just distributed over more acres. Yeah, I mean, all of
- 24:47Speaker 1: my impact on this little property is within like probably
- 24:50Speaker 1: twenty acres. There's really only maybe twenty maybe even less
- 24:53Speaker 1: that's actually huntable ground. So even though I'm not hunting
- 24:57Speaker 1: it very often, when I do hunt, it's all kind
- 25:00Speaker 1: and trade in this relatively small area that I'm limited to.
- 25:03Speaker 1: And that's happened, you know, year after year after year,
- 25:06Speaker 1: and some of these old does you know that have
- 25:08Speaker 1: been here five, six, seven years, They've encountered that now
- 25:12Speaker 1: over and over. So it's it's something on the pay
- 25:15Speaker 1: attention to more this year. You know. I went out
- 25:17Speaker 1: last night to a different farm, new property, and I
- 25:21Speaker 1: had deer comes straight down wind, so they had I
- 25:24Speaker 1: was doing nothing different. I had washed my clothes the
- 25:27Speaker 1: same way, I showered the same way. I did, all
- 25:29Speaker 1: the same scent control, I use the asonos, these nose jammers,
- 25:31Speaker 1: same thing. These deer come down wind to me just
- 25:33Speaker 1: like what happened to me on opening night. But these
- 25:36Speaker 1: deer act completely oblivious. They're like, oh that's something, but
- 25:40Speaker 1: I don't care, and they just waltzed done through completely
- 25:43Speaker 1: different reaction. Um, So it's just kind of got the
- 25:46Speaker 1: question marks popping up over my head and um, we'll
- 25:49Speaker 1: see how the rest of the year goes. But that's
- 25:51Speaker 1: something I've noticed. And um, then I guess speaking to
- 25:54Speaker 1: that second night I went to this new property I
- 25:56Speaker 1: got permission on. UM, I kind of wanted to an
- 25:58Speaker 1: observation sit just on the edge, just trying to I
- 26:01Speaker 1: want to learn more about this property before I start
- 26:04Speaker 1: diving in swinging for any home runs. And uh, I
- 26:07Speaker 1: saw a decent number dear, a couple of young bucks,
- 26:10Speaker 1: beautiful sit um, but nothing too crazy. So that was
- 26:13Speaker 1: kind of how my season started. It was fun. I
- 26:17Speaker 1: want to check some more cameras on the holy Field
- 26:19Speaker 1: property to try to figure out if this guy is
- 26:20Speaker 1: still around. Um. And I'm just gonna kind of keep
- 26:23Speaker 1: on keeping on over the next few weeks, taking a
- 26:25Speaker 1: few low impact hunts, Gonna do some public land dabbling, UM,
- 26:30Speaker 1: test out the saddle some more on some of these
- 26:32Speaker 1: public land areas. Get aggressive on some public land on
- 26:34Speaker 1: days where I don't want to go to my good spot.
- 26:37Speaker 1: And uh, that's that's what I've got up my sleeve
- 26:41Speaker 1: for the next week, week and half until things get
- 26:44Speaker 1: more interesting. So you know how you solve that dough
- 26:48Speaker 1: who keeps blowing at your problem, right, Yeah, I do.
- 26:52Speaker 1: And and if that's the one thing is I need
- 26:54Speaker 1: to figure out if holy Field still alive or not,
- 26:56Speaker 1: because if he's not alive, there's no other bucks on
- 26:59Speaker 1: this farm that I've seen on camera yet that are like,
- 27:01Speaker 1: for sure mature bucks. Um. I just need to get
- 27:04Speaker 1: a dope patrol if that's the case, and and just
- 27:07Speaker 1: spend the season trying to trying to manage that dope population,
- 27:10Speaker 1: because that's the other thing about this spot. It's a
- 27:11Speaker 1: super small property. I've got very limited options, but they're
- 27:15Speaker 1: just a boatload of doughs. Um. I never kill as
- 27:18Speaker 1: many doughs as I probably should. I try to kill
- 27:20Speaker 1: as money. I try to invite some friends over to
- 27:22Speaker 1: to take some but and I'm sure I should be
- 27:24Speaker 1: doing better, and the neighbors aren't doing anything for the
- 27:27Speaker 1: most part. So there's just so many deer. You can't
- 27:29Speaker 1: hardly get anywhere where there's not gonna be some deer
- 27:32Speaker 1: on all sides of you. And that makes for challenging
- 27:35Speaker 1: hunting scenarios. So maybe you know, if the worst case
- 27:40Speaker 1: scenario is true and holy Field disappeared, the silver lining
- 27:44Speaker 1: is that I can maybe finally get to get a
- 27:46Speaker 1: handle on the dough situation and see what comes next.
- 27:51Speaker 1: So absolutely, so, why let me ask you this question
- 27:55Speaker 1: before we split. Why aren't you just sitting back and
- 27:59Speaker 1: checking l cameras right? You're hunting a ghost right now? Yeah,
- 28:04Speaker 1: And I mean that's that's my plan for that property
- 28:07Speaker 1: is too. I was gonna hunt it opening night and
- 28:10Speaker 1: then I'm not going to hunt it again till Halloween
- 28:13Speaker 1: unless unless I get a picture or sighting of him.
- 28:16Speaker 1: So those other hunts I'm talking about that will be
- 28:19Speaker 1: on this new property, that will be on public land,
- 28:22Speaker 1: or that will be up on my Northern Michigan deer
- 28:23Speaker 1: Camp property, um being. Yeah, so the Holy Field spot
- 28:28Speaker 1: is off limits now unless I get something that screams
- 28:31Speaker 1: out you gotta start hunting. And now, so well, I hope,
- 28:36Speaker 1: I hope he shows up out of nowhere again and
- 28:41Speaker 1: you can finally put this to rest. Either he doesn't
- 28:43Speaker 1: show up this year at all, or you know, or
- 28:48Speaker 1: you kill him, or you find that someone else kills him.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Because I've had bucks in my head that have lingered, right,
- 28:55Speaker 1: and it's always like you can't make a proper decision
- 28:59Speaker 1: while that particular buck is lingering. Yeah, yeah, I just
- 29:03Speaker 1: need some closure on this, this whole deal. You know.
- 29:05Speaker 1: It's funny. Hunting can be so many different things to
- 29:09Speaker 1: different people at different points, and like they're hunting journey,
- 29:12Speaker 1: you know, And when you get to that point where
- 29:16Speaker 1: you want the hunt to be in such a specific
- 29:19Speaker 1: way that you are just trying to target one buck
- 29:22Speaker 1: or at least most of your energy is going towards
- 29:23Speaker 1: that one buck, it can be a lot of fun,
- 29:25Speaker 1: but it can also We've we've had this conversation many times.
- 29:28Speaker 1: It can also be like mentally draining or emotionally draining
- 29:34Speaker 1: or something like that. So I am I'm ready to
- 29:39Speaker 1: put this thing to bed one way or another and
- 29:42Speaker 1: m and kind of move on to some different things.
- 29:44Speaker 1: So I'm hoping it'll be happy ending, but if it's not,
- 29:46Speaker 1: I'm ready to see what's behind the next the next
- 29:50Speaker 1: hill too, right, So well, I'm rooting for you. I
- 29:55Speaker 1: appreciate it. I'm rooting for you too. I I'm hoping
- 29:58Speaker 1: that Narlie Charlie will co operate and show up for
- 30:02Speaker 1: you here soon. So next week would be nice. Next
- 30:05Speaker 1: week we'll have to have a more in depth low
- 30:08Speaker 1: down of of how you're hunting this deer and and
- 30:11Speaker 1: hopefully we'll have a hunting by. Do you think that
- 30:12Speaker 1: this weekend might be one of those days you can hunt? Um?
- 30:16Speaker 1: I have to no, not this weekend, uh because number one,
- 30:21Speaker 1: I don't think I'm gonna get the wind I need
- 30:23Speaker 1: and number two, uh, my wife has to work, so
- 30:26Speaker 1: I'm I'm stuck to the local farm. Okay, Well, so
- 30:31Speaker 1: the next week, maybe we can get more in depth
- 30:34Speaker 1: on how we're going to tackle the Gnarlie Charlie dilemma.
- 30:37Speaker 1: And uh absolutely I'm excited. Well, thank you, sir. I
- 30:42Speaker 1: know you've got to bounce, but um, we're gonna move
- 30:44Speaker 1: on to get the suburban bow hunter guys Seek one
- 30:48Speaker 1: Productions on the line here talk about some big bucks
- 30:51Speaker 1: in Atlanta, Georgia. Real quick. Before we do that, we
- 30:56Speaker 1: need to take a second and think our partners at
- 30:58Speaker 1: White Tailed Property, and I want to give a plug
- 31:01Speaker 1: for another one of their YouTube videos that are part
- 31:04Speaker 1: of that land beat video series of there's. The most
- 31:08Speaker 1: recent one is with Dan Perez. Dan Perez is the
- 31:11Speaker 1: co founder of White Tailed Properties, and what he talks
- 31:14Speaker 1: about in this quick video are a few different things
- 31:17Speaker 1: you can do before buying a piece of property to
- 31:19Speaker 1: help you understand what kind of income potential is there.
- 31:22Speaker 1: You know, how how much money could you get from
- 31:24Speaker 1: leasing it out to a farmer or from different from
- 31:26Speaker 1: different kinds of government programs that will pay you for
- 31:29Speaker 1: certain habitat and projects and whatnot. Very interesting, some good
- 31:33Speaker 1: things to think about before dropping some some coin on
- 31:36Speaker 1: a potential hunting property or recreational property. And a quick watch.
- 31:40Speaker 1: So head on over to the white Tail Properties YouTube channel.
- 31:42Speaker 1: They have lots of videos with helpful information even some hunts.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Now this one though, if you want to check it out.
- 31:48Speaker 1: It's called Considerations when Buying Land. And if you want
- 31:52Speaker 1: more information about white Tail Properties and the land they
- 31:55Speaker 1: have listed for sale, visit white tailed properties dot com.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Alright with me now on the line, I've got Lee
- 32:02Speaker 1: and Drew from Seek One Productions. Welcome to show, guys. Yeah,
- 32:10Speaker 1: I appreciate taking the time. I um I. I just
- 32:15Speaker 1: recently kind of discovered you guys, because my producer, Spencer
- 32:19Speaker 1: new Hearth, he puts together my radio miniseries for Wired Hunt.
- 32:23Speaker 1: He had I think it was Lee. I think he
- 32:25Speaker 1: had you on as a contributor a few weeks ago,
- 32:29Speaker 1: and I listened to that, and I was really interested
- 32:33Speaker 1: in what you had to say, and so I gotta
- 32:34Speaker 1: go check these guys out. So then I went and
- 32:35Speaker 1: I pulled up your YouTube channel, and I started looking
- 32:38Speaker 1: at these videos, started seeing what you guys are up to,
- 32:41Speaker 1: and I kind of had my mind blown. You guys
- 32:45Speaker 1: kind of kind of shocked me with what you're doing
- 32:49Speaker 1: down there in Atlanta. Um. So I'm excited. I guess
- 32:54Speaker 1: that's my long way of saying, this is gonna be
- 32:55Speaker 1: really interesting conversation. I'm glad we're doing it. Um. And
- 32:58Speaker 1: I guess to get started, i'd like to hear just
- 33:01Speaker 1: a real quick, like cliff notes intro as to who
- 33:04Speaker 1: you guys are and what you're doing. UM, I don't know, leave,
- 33:06Speaker 1: do you want to kick things off and just kind
- 33:08Speaker 1: of give us a quick overview of who who you are,
- 33:10Speaker 1: how you get involved this? Yeah, So, UM, I think
- 33:15Speaker 1: you Drew and I both pretty much started at the
- 33:18Speaker 1: exact same time. We were buddies and middle school and
- 33:24Speaker 1: he had a family farm that you know, we'd go
- 33:25Speaker 1: to on just kind of rare occasion. Um, But we
- 33:29Speaker 1: were so busy with school and sports and stuff that
- 33:31Speaker 1: we really never got to get out there. So he
- 33:35Speaker 1: Drew the one that kind of got me introduced to hunting. Um.
- 33:39Speaker 1: And then it was you know, just kind of us
- 33:42Speaker 1: taking notice of what was around us, just driving to
- 33:45Speaker 1: and from school. And I know that Drew and I
- 33:48Speaker 1: was fishing upon one day and like a like a
- 33:51Speaker 1: creek bottom. And I mean at this time, I didn't
- 33:55Speaker 1: really know anything about hunting, but Drew knew what you know,
- 33:58Speaker 1: rubs and scrapes, wor and stuff in this place was
- 34:00Speaker 1: just like destroyed. Um, and so we were just like, man,
- 34:05Speaker 1: there's there's gotta be like some pretty good deer here.
- 34:09Speaker 1: We'd see him like driving down the roads and stuff,
- 34:11Speaker 1: and um, we just kind of started from there. I
- 34:15Speaker 1: mean had literally had no clue what we were doing
- 34:19Speaker 1: at six h trying to get access to um, you know,
- 34:25Speaker 1: places to hunt. But uh, you know, we'll kind of
- 34:29Speaker 1: dive into some stories later, but like it, I mean
- 34:30Speaker 1: it took us a long time. Finally got some access
- 34:33Speaker 1: to some places and put some cameras out and kind
- 34:36Speaker 1: of stumbled on this little hidden gym that was around
- 34:40Speaker 1: us the whole time and never gonna really knew it.
- 34:43Speaker 1: And uh, you know, before we know it, like our
- 34:46Speaker 1: first year hunting. We've got like, you know, just some
- 34:49Speaker 1: freaking stud you know, one fifty plus just matured year
- 34:53Speaker 1: that we're chasing, you know, minutes from our house. So um,
- 34:59Speaker 1: it's I don't know, it was just kind of a
- 35:02Speaker 1: undiscovered little secret, didn't really see it coming kind of thing,
- 35:05Speaker 1: and it was it just kind of took off from there.
- 35:07Speaker 1: We've been doing it for twelve years, and Um through
- 35:11Speaker 1: kind of approached the idea of I guess this was
- 35:16Speaker 1: two thousand was when don't we hunt Charlie Drew? I
- 35:20Speaker 1: think it's two thousand fourteen. Charlie was, Yeah, that kind
- 35:26Speaker 1: of I guess originally grabbed some attention because it was
- 35:29Speaker 1: just like this deer was just like stupid big um
- 35:35Speaker 1: and Drew was like, we need to film this. I mean,
- 35:37Speaker 1: the stories that we've had prior to them, you just
- 35:41Speaker 1: gotta see to believe of how kind of crazy they are.
- 35:44Speaker 1: And he was like, we got a film and tell
- 35:46Speaker 1: the story. And so this kind of drew his idea.
- 35:49Speaker 1: He pretty much gave up his old season just to
- 35:52Speaker 1: film me uh and the story of hung story called
- 35:55Speaker 1: Charlie and Um ended up killing that deer on camera
- 35:59Speaker 1: and a little trailer together and some out there. That's
- 36:02Speaker 1: what kind of got our name out there. Ever since then,
- 36:04Speaker 1: we've been uh filming our hunts and trying to tell
- 36:08Speaker 1: the stories of chasing these monster bucks in the suburbs. Yeah,
- 36:13Speaker 1: what would you add, Drew? Um, I mean he pretty
- 36:19Speaker 1: much covered a high level. Um. Yeah, I mean we
- 36:23Speaker 1: we both live basically it's considered the suburbs of Atlanta,
- 36:28Speaker 1: So we're we both live outside the perimeter, which would
- 36:32Speaker 1: be um, probably a twenty minute drive from like the
- 36:35Speaker 1: real heart of the city. But we're still, you know,
- 36:39Speaker 1: surrounded by neighborhoods and commercial property and stuff like that. So, um,
- 36:44Speaker 1: define a block of woods over ten acres is pretty rare.
- 36:48Speaker 1: I mean, there's there's some big box kind of scattered
- 36:51Speaker 1: throughout and along the river. Um. But we are like
- 36:55Speaker 1: in the heart of the suburbs. So when we say
- 36:56Speaker 1: a suburban hunting, it's not like we're kind of on
- 37:01Speaker 1: the outskirts of these neighborhoods like we are in the
- 37:04Speaker 1: uh in the creek bottoms and river bottoms between these
- 37:07Speaker 1: these houses. So yeah, we we're just fortunate enough to
- 37:11Speaker 1: grow up in probably the best areas of the entire
- 37:16Speaker 1: state as far as genetics go and and deer population.
- 37:20Speaker 1: So we kind of just as the deer population grew
- 37:23Speaker 1: down here, we just kind of started to take notice
- 37:25Speaker 1: and uh and took advantage of it. And that's how
- 37:28Speaker 1: we didn't I don't think either of us bow hunted
- 37:31Speaker 1: before we found that little creek bottom, that little that
- 37:34Speaker 1: six acre block of woods. We both like that property. UM.
- 37:40Speaker 1: So that's that's kind of how it kicked off. And
- 37:42Speaker 1: then we hunted that spot for I don't know, probably
- 37:46Speaker 1: for four or five years before we started to have
- 37:49Speaker 1: to branch out. I mean, that spot was unbelievable. It
- 37:53Speaker 1: was like a gateway um into like a larger area
- 37:57Speaker 1: of just different pockets of woods. So we in a rut.
- 38:00Speaker 1: We'd have just books that we have never seen just
- 38:03Speaker 1: piling through there, and Lee killed most of them. Lee
- 38:09Speaker 1: Lee went on a bro heater for about four or
- 38:11Speaker 1: five years, and then I think he was the first
- 38:16Speaker 1: one to kind of start branching out UM and started
- 38:20Speaker 1: just knocking on doors in other areas and realizing that hey,
- 38:23Speaker 1: it's working at this spot here. Why I want to
- 38:25Speaker 1: work you know, ten miles away, um at this other
- 38:28Speaker 1: spot that I found on on Google maps. UM. And
- 38:33Speaker 1: so you know that just kind of escalated and escalated,
- 38:36Speaker 1: and I mean before you know it, we were knocking
- 38:38Speaker 1: on hundreds and hundreds of doors every offseason just searching
- 38:42Speaker 1: for a for a mature Bucks so and and then, um,
- 38:48Speaker 1: I think it was it was the year that Donny
- 38:51Speaker 1: Vincent came out with The Rivers Divide. Is when when
- 38:55Speaker 1: I was like, dang, that's pretty cool. I want to
- 38:58Speaker 1: like the story of Steve is very very similar to
- 39:01Speaker 1: the stories that we're having on these Bucks. Um, Like,
- 39:04Speaker 1: I want to I want to buy a camera and
- 39:06Speaker 1: film this. So that was that was a big motivation.
- 39:10Speaker 1: And then just kind of watching Portland bow Hunter progress
- 39:13Speaker 1: and they're just um, their their quality and they're like
- 39:17Speaker 1: cinematic style. That was a big motivator too. So I
- 39:20Speaker 1: bought a camera that year and the very first year
- 39:23Speaker 1: that we ever filmed, the very first video that I've
- 39:27Speaker 1: ever made in my life was a absolute monster. What
- 39:31Speaker 1: is the nine point early with I think he was
- 39:33Speaker 1: a hundred and eighty two inches or something. And the
- 39:36Speaker 1: frame on this year is just insane, Like it looks
- 39:40Speaker 1: like people were saying that Lee shot it from a
- 39:44Speaker 1: high offense, shot it out of like a helicopter and
- 39:47Speaker 1: I don't know, it was just like there's no way
- 39:51Speaker 1: that came from Atlanta. People just like there's no way. Well, well,
- 39:55Speaker 1: that's the thing. I feel like most people probably even
- 39:59Speaker 1: still don't really under Dan what you're talking about as
- 40:01Speaker 1: far as the quality of deer that you're seeing in
- 40:03Speaker 1: hunting and killing in the suburbs here. I mean, you
- 40:07Speaker 1: guys are incorrect me if I'm wrong here, But for whenever,
- 40:11Speaker 1: what I've seen, you're consistently getting on mature bucks and
- 40:15Speaker 1: and big like crazy non typical bucks to like booners
- 40:20Speaker 1: and two at least one plus buck. Right, Yeah, we've
- 40:26Speaker 1: had to hunt for well to be determined, possibly four
- 40:32Speaker 1: now including this year, but uh three two hund We've
- 40:37Speaker 1: we've had a tance to hunt three year in Atlanta
- 40:41Speaker 1: over the years. Plus if you count j if you
- 40:44Speaker 1: count Ja, that's another one because Jay actually has the
- 40:47Speaker 1: state record nontypical, which is growth. Yeah, something crazy. Wow,
- 40:54Speaker 1: And this is happening in neighborhoods and behind people's houses.
- 40:58Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like this is this is just
- 41:00Speaker 1: unlike what any anyone thinks is possible. Um, it's pretty remarkable.
- 41:06Speaker 1: What so, so why do you think that this area
- 41:09Speaker 1: is so good. And I guess that's my first question,
- 41:12Speaker 1: why do you think that you're finding deer of this
- 41:14Speaker 1: age in quality? And then number two? Is that unique
- 41:18Speaker 1: just to this area in Atlanta or are there quality
- 41:21Speaker 1: deer hunting opportunities like this in suburbs of other big
- 41:23Speaker 1: cities too? Do you think? Uh so? There. I think
- 41:28Speaker 1: there's a lot of things going on in Atlanta that
- 41:32Speaker 1: that make it what it is. Um The first is
- 41:36Speaker 1: and I don't know it's like the the actual facts
- 41:39Speaker 1: behind this, but there used to be like no deer
- 41:42Speaker 1: in Atlanta. Um And I know that, you know, two
- 41:46Speaker 1: decades ago they imported deer. I've always heard been told
- 41:49Speaker 1: from Wisconsin and that that's kind of the native genetic
- 41:53Speaker 1: that that's kind of spread throughout Atlanta because some of
- 41:55Speaker 1: these do you look at and you're like, Yeah, there's
- 41:58Speaker 1: there's no way that that's a Native Georgia deer with
- 42:01Speaker 1: just like the heavy mass and just dark racks and
- 42:05Speaker 1: you know some of the crazy frames and nontypicals that
- 42:08Speaker 1: we're seeing. Um So, I've always been told that it's
- 42:11Speaker 1: been like a Wisconsin strange genetic that's running around Atlanta.
- 42:15Speaker 1: UM So you can find good genetics with just an
- 42:21Speaker 1: absolute buffet of food they have in the summertime. We've
- 42:25Speaker 1: got the biggest thing we've discovered, and this is something
- 42:27Speaker 1: we discovered probably three years ago, what Charlie was. We
- 42:31Speaker 1: had no idea where this deer spent his summertime. You
- 42:35Speaker 1: know when the when o cobra hit and the deer
- 42:38Speaker 1: moving around is when we'd always get him on camera.
- 42:40Speaker 1: But as far as like spring and summer and early fall,
- 42:43Speaker 1: we had no idea where this year was um and
- 42:47Speaker 1: so we just started searching and searching and searching. We
- 42:49Speaker 1: found him in a cudzoo patch in the summertime. Do
- 42:52Speaker 1: you do? You know what cud do this? You know,
- 42:54Speaker 1: I didn't. I hadn't heard of it until I heard
- 42:57Speaker 1: you talk about it a little bit on the radio
- 42:59Speaker 1: episode a couple weeks ago. But but please talk about
- 43:02Speaker 1: it because I'm sure most people aren't familiar or some
- 43:04Speaker 1: aren't Drew the botanist, so I'll let him I got
- 43:11Speaker 1: last podcast. So yeah, jud do is basically UM, it's
- 43:15Speaker 1: basically a it's like a soybean. It's it's really a
- 43:19Speaker 1: lab lab so just a perennial type soybean leafy plant
- 43:26Speaker 1: that just grows in a vine and it's invasive. I
- 43:29Speaker 1: think it's from like Japan or something, and it just
- 43:32Speaker 1: grows and all these like on the roadsides and basically
- 43:35Speaker 1: anywhere it can take hold. It just starts growing and
- 43:37Speaker 1: it's impossible to get rid of. But it's like twenty
- 43:40Speaker 1: or protein in the leaves and just grows. It can
- 43:47Speaker 1: grow us five don s, so these deer can just
- 43:51Speaker 1: be down grows into Yeah, it grows into this jungle.
- 43:55Speaker 1: It's just like a perfect habitat form. So that's kind
- 43:59Speaker 1: of what we discovered is like this this cut dune.
- 44:02Speaker 1: It I think it was originally introduced for like you know,
- 44:05Speaker 1: help helping and control like erosion along roadways and stuff. Um,
- 44:09Speaker 1: but it's just like it grows so fast that it's
- 44:11Speaker 1: just like moved into, you know, places that shouldn't be
- 44:14Speaker 1: and it's just taken over little pockets of woods and
- 44:16Speaker 1: it's like these boxed in the summertime, we'll pile into
- 44:20Speaker 1: these cuts, do patches because it's just a buffet built.
- 44:24Speaker 1: When we were filming and watching Charlie, he would get up,
- 44:27Speaker 1: you know, ten times a day, feed around for a
- 44:29Speaker 1: few minutes, lay right back down and he would just
- 44:31Speaker 1: completely disappear. And he was actually in the middle of
- 44:35Speaker 1: an apartment complex, probably ten acres in the middle of
- 44:39Speaker 1: apartment complex, and nobody knew that Dear was there until
- 44:44Speaker 1: like they saw Drew and I like standing on people's
- 44:46Speaker 1: decks and stuff with the camera lens and whatnot, and
- 44:49Speaker 1: then they're like, oh, yeah, I guess there are deer
- 44:51Speaker 1: back here. And they were looking at like a totally
- 44:56Speaker 1: care um so that they're fords in the sun. Our
- 45:00Speaker 1: time with cud do and things like that is just
- 45:03Speaker 1: you know, they have all they could possibly eat. And
- 45:05Speaker 1: we've seen some really big bucks grow out going out
- 45:08Speaker 1: and kutz and then we have so many hardwoods. I mean,
- 45:12Speaker 1: I was checking a camera yesterday and I'm just like
- 45:14Speaker 1: walking on top of white oaks on the ground, acorns
- 45:18Speaker 1: and so between that, and then you know, as uh
- 45:25Speaker 1: kind of the hard winter rolls around, they really move
- 45:28Speaker 1: into people's landscaping and stuff um and started eating that.
- 45:34Speaker 1: So kind of through all all all through all parts
- 45:37Speaker 1: of the year, they've got all the food they could
- 45:40Speaker 1: possibly want. So do you think then to to that
- 45:45Speaker 1: second part of the question, do you feel that you
- 45:48Speaker 1: know the suburbs of Detroit, or the suburbs of Cleveland
- 45:54Speaker 1: or the suburbs of name any other big city across
- 45:56Speaker 1: the country. Do you think there's opportunities like this where
- 45:58Speaker 1: there's probably great foods sources that probably are these pockets
- 46:01Speaker 1: of timber and creek ranges and things like that where
- 46:04Speaker 1: these deer are getting in there getting well fed and
- 46:07Speaker 1: aren't being hunted as much like these deer are. Is
- 46:09Speaker 1: this Does this translate other places? Yeah, it definitely doesn't.
- 46:17Speaker 1: That's part of what we're doing this year, uh with
- 46:20Speaker 1: our videos is we're we've branched out to Nashville, Tennessee,
- 46:24Speaker 1: which that kind of got put on the map a
- 46:27Speaker 1: couple I guess two years ago when someone killed the
- 46:30Speaker 1: world record non typical like just outside of Nashville. So
- 46:35Speaker 1: we get messages all the time from people in different
- 46:38Speaker 1: cities saying it's like so cool to watch other people
- 46:43Speaker 1: doing exactly what we're doing. Um, another city is like
- 46:46Speaker 1: you guys should come up here and check out the deer.
- 46:49Speaker 1: And in Nashville or Cincinnati or DC, you're I mean,
- 46:53Speaker 1: you name it. There's probably ten different cities that we've
- 46:55Speaker 1: gotten messages from. So yeah, I mean, it's definitely definitely
- 47:00Speaker 1: something that's going on in other cities. I think for
- 47:03Speaker 1: a long time, I mean even here in Atlanta, like
- 47:06Speaker 1: it was kept a secret and for good reason. And we,
- 47:08Speaker 1: I mean we've been accused of ruining that secret, which
- 47:11Speaker 1: is kind of true that. Uh. I think it's like
- 47:16Speaker 1: now that it's kind of coming out with us, and
- 47:18Speaker 1: I mean there there are other people that are that
- 47:20Speaker 1: are doing it in other cities that have kind of
- 47:22Speaker 1: publicized it. But it's just it's coming to light a
- 47:24Speaker 1: lot more in recent years and it than it has been. Um,
- 47:29Speaker 1: so I think it was. Yeah, I think you'll start
- 47:33Speaker 1: hearing more and more people that are like, yeah, I've
- 47:35Speaker 1: been doing this forever. I've killed these giant gear in
- 47:38Speaker 1: the suburbs of wherever. Um And I mean I don't
- 47:42Speaker 1: I don't think so. One thing that's like unique about
- 47:46Speaker 1: Atlanta is that the rest of Georgia doesn't necessarily have
- 47:50Speaker 1: really big gear. I mean, there are pockets of good genetics, um,
- 47:55Speaker 1: you know, scattered throughout the state, but as a whole,
- 47:59Speaker 1: it's not known the Big Buck state. But Atlanta is different.
- 48:03Speaker 1: So that's like that draws people in from outside of
- 48:06Speaker 1: the city to just come in to come in and
- 48:08Speaker 1: just trying to find these big gear all. Yeah, it
- 48:13Speaker 1: just kind of it just makes it that much more
- 48:15Speaker 1: um in the spotlight. Whereas if you go out to
- 48:19Speaker 1: you know, I don't know, Ohio or something like, there's
- 48:22Speaker 1: big gear throughout the most of the state. So Cincinnati
- 48:25Speaker 1: is not going to necessarily stand out as much. Um So.
- 48:29Speaker 1: I mean, as with anywhere that it has to have
- 48:32Speaker 1: the genetics to to be able to produce. But a
- 48:36Speaker 1: lot of times in these suburban environments you're going to
- 48:38Speaker 1: get if you have the genetics, you could also have
- 48:40Speaker 1: the lack of hunting crusher, so that you're going to
- 48:42Speaker 1: get older and bigger. Yeah, So is that something that
- 48:46Speaker 1: you can consistently see is that there are my assumption
- 48:50Speaker 1: as a lot of times there's going to be areas
- 48:52Speaker 1: that just are not getting hunted that are very different
- 48:55Speaker 1: than a lot of spots maybe in the more rural
- 48:57Speaker 1: spot areas where there's at least in more states a
- 49:00Speaker 1: significant amount of pressure. So you're seeing deer that just
- 49:03Speaker 1: reach more consistent age older age classes. Is that something
- 49:07Speaker 1: that's kind of in the trend right These deer just
- 49:09Speaker 1: getting age on them, and that's why that used to
- 49:12Speaker 1: be the case, it's not anymore though, uh So, kind
- 49:16Speaker 1: of backtracking a little bit, that spot, that first spot
- 49:19Speaker 1: that you are fishing, that pond, that and they're just
- 49:21Speaker 1: like scrapes and rubs everywhere. That's where we ended up
- 49:24Speaker 1: getting permission. And it was like, you know, we we
- 49:28Speaker 1: had three four or five shooters in their year in November,
- 49:32Speaker 1: and I don't think either of us have hunted that
- 49:35Speaker 1: spot in six years because that area has become very
- 49:40Speaker 1: popular and so there's a lot there's so many hunters
- 49:43Speaker 1: now it is so hard to find a mature deer
- 49:48Speaker 1: in that area anymore. Because here's the thing, like, you know,
- 49:51Speaker 1: our genetics are so good that are two and three
- 49:54Speaker 1: year olds are you know, hoping young type deer and
- 49:59Speaker 1: someone that's you know, never kill a pope and young,
- 50:02Speaker 1: especially with a you know, with a bow in their hand.
- 50:04Speaker 1: It's just like, you know, how can how can you
- 50:08Speaker 1: blame them for not passing up that three year old
- 50:11Speaker 1: you know, dyer that comes walking by and when they've
- 50:13Speaker 1: never killed a deer like that. So there's so many
- 50:16Speaker 1: people getting into it, and there's some areas that are
- 50:19Speaker 1: definitely way more popular than others that it has really
- 50:23Speaker 1: caused us to kind of adapt and and and completely
- 50:27Speaker 1: abandoned areas um and really try and get into places
- 50:31Speaker 1: that are overlooked that aren't being hunted as much, where
- 50:34Speaker 1: you do find a deer of that you know right
- 50:36Speaker 1: age class um. And you know, for us, we really
- 50:41Speaker 1: like to try and find a deer that's at the
- 50:43Speaker 1: minimum five UM. And the deer that's that we killed
- 50:48Speaker 1: last year, the named Zeus, we think he was like
- 50:51Speaker 1: nine and and that was the biggest that's the biggest
- 50:54Speaker 1: he ever was. So we have set Antler's off of
- 50:56Speaker 1: him from when he was eight and he scored one
- 50:59Speaker 1: nine and then we have um, you know, the next
- 51:04Speaker 1: year we killed him and we I think we green
- 51:05Speaker 1: scored him at like two or three something like that.
- 51:10Speaker 1: So from eight to nine we put on ten inches UM.
- 51:16Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean to answer your question, yes, there
- 51:19Speaker 1: are definitely still places where and it takes a long
- 51:22Speaker 1: time to find them where deer getting to the right age.
- 51:25Speaker 1: But this is something that is becoming so popular that
- 51:28Speaker 1: you know, sometimes you've got ten or fifteen guys hunting
- 51:31Speaker 1: the same deer, so there's a lot more deer being shot,
- 51:37Speaker 1: and it's just really it's in some of these areas
- 51:39Speaker 1: where it's more popular, it's really hard to find, you know,
- 51:43Speaker 1: the right age class. But um, I think everything has
- 51:46Speaker 1: to do with obviously nutrition, genetics, but age is also
- 51:50Speaker 1: super super important. We watched Dear you know for some
- 51:54Speaker 1: time drew something deer right now called Falco that I
- 51:57Speaker 1: think he's had on camera for five years. Yeah, we
- 52:01Speaker 1: wanted to be a lot of deer. Yeah, we watch
- 52:05Speaker 1: a lot of deer from one and a half and
- 52:07Speaker 1: two and a half and just kind of keep watching them,
- 52:10Speaker 1: keep watching them, keep watching them until they're at that
- 52:12Speaker 1: right edge, uh, to go hunt. It's so cool that
- 52:17Speaker 1: you'll have that kind of opportunity where you do have
- 52:19Speaker 1: those deer that make it year after year and get
- 52:21Speaker 1: to get to watch them and follow them. It's I
- 52:23Speaker 1: feel like for for sometimes people on the outside of
- 52:28Speaker 1: this kind of little tight community that gets really into
- 52:29Speaker 1: the white tail stuff. For people who haven't had that
- 52:31Speaker 1: kind of chance, they look at it is kind of
- 52:34Speaker 1: bizarre that you might name a deer or that you
- 52:36Speaker 1: might watch Dear year after year. But but as you
- 52:39Speaker 1: guys obviously know, since you've been a part of this,
- 52:41Speaker 1: and I've been fortunate to have some opportunities like this too.
- 52:44Speaker 1: It's so interesting to be able to take the challenge
- 52:47Speaker 1: of hunting and ramp that challenge up two level twelve
- 52:52Speaker 1: when you're targeting that one deer and learning that one
- 52:55Speaker 1: deer's habits and that one dear's behavior and his home
- 52:57Speaker 1: range and how he moves between places and why he
- 53:00Speaker 1: does what he does. I mean, at least for someone
- 53:02Speaker 1: like me and I'm sure you guys too, who's fascinated
- 53:04Speaker 1: by these animals, that is like the ultimate and uh,
- 53:08Speaker 1: it's it's so cool to be able to see that
- 53:10Speaker 1: happening in places like this in the city that I
- 53:13Speaker 1: think most people just assume that you couldn't do this.
- 53:16Speaker 1: And what I what I love about it, and I
- 53:19Speaker 1: think you immediately we're talking about this just a little
- 53:22Speaker 1: bit yesterday, is the fact that I feel like this
- 53:25Speaker 1: idea of of the opportunities available in the suburbs and
- 53:28Speaker 1: around the city, it opens up the doors of hunting
- 53:31Speaker 1: to so many new people that maybe didn't think they
- 53:34Speaker 1: could find a place to hunt. You've got these new
- 53:36Speaker 1: people coming into the hunting world that want to get started.
- 53:39Speaker 1: They live in town, they don't have friends or family
- 53:42Speaker 1: that live out in the country with big farms and
- 53:43Speaker 1: they're thinking, well, yeah, I like the idea of hunting.
- 53:45Speaker 1: It seems like a cool thing. Joe Rogan has been
- 53:47Speaker 1: talking about it, and I'm intrigued. But where the heck
- 53:50Speaker 1: do I go. I'm not going to drive two hours
- 53:52Speaker 1: in the middle of nowhere and knock going to farmer's
- 53:54Speaker 1: door in my penny loafers. Um, but but but but
- 53:59Speaker 1: I think if they if they see or hear about
- 54:01Speaker 1: what people like you guys are doing right in town,
- 54:03Speaker 1: They're like, oh, hey, I could drive ten minutes down
- 54:05Speaker 1: the road and knock on these doors in my neighborhood
- 54:08Speaker 1: and maybe there's a three acre piece I could hunt
- 54:10Speaker 1: and that actually could work. I feel like this is
- 54:13Speaker 1: just it's such an important idea to get out there
- 54:15Speaker 1: at this time when when we need to help bring
- 54:18Speaker 1: in this new group of hunters. So so I guess
- 54:22Speaker 1: my rambling leads me to this. Then let's talk about
- 54:26Speaker 1: how you do this, because if someone's listening and they're
- 54:27Speaker 1: intrigued and they want to try to put this into
- 54:29Speaker 1: play in their own town, um, I feel like we
- 54:32Speaker 1: need to start at where you start. So when you're
- 54:36Speaker 1: trying to find a new place, you have to twist
- 54:39Speaker 1: my arm a little bit on this one, but we'll see.
- 54:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna do my best. So so when you're getting
- 54:47Speaker 1: started in a new area, maybe you can use the
- 54:50Speaker 1: Tennessee situation as example, or or something you're doing there
- 54:53Speaker 1: in Atlanta. I guess first, like, what are you looking
- 54:56Speaker 1: for when trying to find a place that's worth hunting?
- 54:59Speaker 1: You know, when at this point, how do you choose
- 55:01Speaker 1: the properties that you're interested in hunting? And then where
- 55:03Speaker 1: do you go from there? I think I think Nashville
- 55:08Speaker 1: actually is a really good example. I mean you can
- 55:10Speaker 1: you can watch our first episode that was released a
- 55:13Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago. We have like a whole segment
- 55:15Speaker 1: on just before we even go up there for the
- 55:18Speaker 1: first time. We are looking at maps and networking and
- 55:22Speaker 1: all of that before we even put a boot on
- 55:24Speaker 1: the ground. So I think the the first step is,
- 55:29Speaker 1: I mean, just talking to everybody you possibly can, because
- 55:33Speaker 1: going out there blind and not knowing where certain pockets
- 55:37Speaker 1: of genetics where I mean, there's certain areas of Atlanta
- 55:40Speaker 1: and Nashville where there's not there's no deer, and then
- 55:43Speaker 1: you go, you know, a couple of miles away and
- 55:45Speaker 1: there's a ton of deer. So just getting out there
- 55:49Speaker 1: and talking to as many people as possible to figure
- 55:52Speaker 1: out the general area first to start, I think is
- 55:55Speaker 1: a good first step. Um. And then just you know,
- 56:00Speaker 1: along up pulling up maps. We uh, we use a
- 56:03Speaker 1: couple of different maps. UM. One, we just use you know,
- 56:07Speaker 1: Google Maps in aerial view just to kind of give
- 56:10Speaker 1: a sweeping view of different pockets of woods. And then
- 56:13Speaker 1: we'll kind of diving deeper with real estate maps that
- 56:16Speaker 1: show property lines and owners names and addresses and phone
- 56:21Speaker 1: numbers and things like that, so we'll kind of figure out,
- 56:25Speaker 1: you know, the areas that that have big blocks of
- 56:29Speaker 1: woods that may be connected together by river bottoms or
- 56:33Speaker 1: creek bottoms so these deer can actually roam around during
- 56:36Speaker 1: the season. And then we'll actually look at property lines
- 56:40Speaker 1: and we'll look for bigger properties that we can kind
- 56:42Speaker 1: of string together. So like I mean, some areas the
- 56:46Speaker 1: government or the city owns most of the blocks of
- 56:49Speaker 1: woods and the properties are only you know, a half
- 56:53Speaker 1: acre um. And then other areas you have you know,
- 56:56Speaker 1: four and five acre properties um with houses on them,
- 57:00Speaker 1: just like making up a huge area. So those are
- 57:03Speaker 1: the types of areas we like to focus on. Just
- 57:05Speaker 1: because it's so much easier for submission and you actually
- 57:08Speaker 1: have room to move around. UM. So, I think what's
- 57:13Speaker 1: cool about our Nashville video is that, you know, Atlanta,
- 57:16Speaker 1: we've been doing this for so long that we've kind
- 57:18Speaker 1: of established our network and our spots and stuff, just
- 57:21Speaker 1: kind of self sustaining beasts. At this point, we're we're
- 57:24Speaker 1: always still looking for new areas, uh and whatnot, new
- 57:28Speaker 1: places to get access to. But for the most part,
- 57:31Speaker 1: you know, we've we've done a lot of our groundwork.
- 57:34Speaker 1: What's cool about Nashville is that we've never been there before,
- 57:38Speaker 1: so you really got to see, you know, from start
- 57:40Speaker 1: to finish of of how we do it and kind
- 57:43Speaker 1: like Drew said, it's a lot of studying maps. But
- 57:46Speaker 1: I think I think the biggest thing is uh, and
- 57:49Speaker 1: this will kind of cover a couple of different categories,
- 57:52Speaker 1: is to not be afraid. The reason I say that is, UH, One,
- 57:56Speaker 1: you just you need to not be afraid to talk
- 57:59Speaker 1: who whoever it is, doesn't matter who it is about,
- 58:03Speaker 1: just bringing up, you know, your interests in hunting and
- 58:07Speaker 1: blah blah blah blah blah, because that person may let
- 58:11Speaker 1: you hunt, they may have a place in their backyard
- 58:14Speaker 1: or let you hunt. If not them, they may have
- 58:16Speaker 1: a family friend or a family member that said, oh yeah,
- 58:19Speaker 1: this guy seasier all the time. Oh. You know, you'd
- 58:21Speaker 1: be amazed at how many times you you get people
- 58:24Speaker 1: talking and they're like, oh, this person said they saw
- 58:26Speaker 1: a huge buck, you know, last year, and you're like,
- 58:29Speaker 1: where was that? And then and then on top of that,
- 58:36Speaker 1: you know, even if if you're looking at an area
- 58:38Speaker 1: or you've been told as a deer in a certain area,
- 58:40Speaker 1: you know, some of these deer hide and really small
- 58:43Speaker 1: overlooked places. Now they travel for miles, but sometimes they're
- 58:48Speaker 1: traveling through tiny little fingers, and so you know, if
- 58:51Speaker 1: you get a spot and you walk back there and
- 58:53Speaker 1: you're kind of like, oh, you know, I don't I
- 58:55Speaker 1: don't know, stick a camera out because you never know
- 59:00Speaker 1: what's gonna be there. I mean, we run I think
- 59:03Speaker 1: we're running like thirty or forty cameras in Atlanta. I
- 59:05Speaker 1: think we've been running about ten or fifteen in Nashville.
- 59:09Speaker 1: And so it's like the more cameras you have out
- 59:11Speaker 1: and covering a wider grid, you're gonna find something. And
- 59:16Speaker 1: then you can kind of owe in on that beer.
- 59:18Speaker 1: That's when it kind of comes into not being afraid
- 59:22Speaker 1: to start just pounding the pavement and knocking on doors
- 59:26Speaker 1: like crazy. I think a lot of people get really afraid.
- 59:31Speaker 1: They just kind of built it up in their head
- 59:32Speaker 1: that it's like this big intimidating thing and knock on
- 59:34Speaker 1: some stranger's door and ask them to bow hunt. But um,
- 59:39Speaker 1: once you just like get the confidence to do it
- 59:41Speaker 1: a few times, you get more comfortable with it, and
- 59:44Speaker 1: you kind of develop your own language and develop your
- 59:46Speaker 1: style of your approach and everything like that, and you
- 59:49Speaker 1: just gain more confidence and more confidence and more confident
- 59:52Speaker 1: and more you do it. That's that's kind of why
- 59:54Speaker 1: I say, like, don't be afraid to just talk to
- 59:57Speaker 1: people and put cameras out in areas even if it
- 59:59Speaker 1: doesn't great, and you know, don't be afraid to go
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: start knocking on doors. Yeah. Yeah, I found in my
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: own experience that it's like a snowball effect. That first
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: story knocking is intimidating, and the second door is a
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: little bit better, and the third door is a little better,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: and then it just gets better and better as you
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: roll down the hill. Building. It was a complete disaster
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: for us when we were sixteen. Like I said, complete
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: disaster for us knocking on doors try and get one
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: place to hunt. I mean we we had no clue
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: what to say. We're probably starting starting our words. I
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: think people can really see you right through that. They're like, hey,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: this that's the proudest for guy's first time doing this.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: He doesn't really it's not really confident in what he's saying.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: And then it's gonna just gonna make that owner feel
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: uneasy about it the whole situation. Let's talk about that
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: permission process, because to your point, there's if you're going
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: into this process having not done before, there's a lot
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: of stumbling blocks along the way. Um. I think what
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: I've seen and heard and just from knowing how my
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: own process is developed, I'm sure you guys kind of
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: have a game plan when it comes to how you
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: ask for permission. Maybe what you wear when you're gonna
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: ask permission, maybe how you talk. I saw in your
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: in one of your videos that something one of you
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: mentioned was that you knock on the door, but then
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: you step back a few steps so you're not intimidatingly
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: close to the door when a when a woman answers
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: it and sees this big, tall guy right in her face. Um,
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: can you walk us through all the little details that
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: you think about when it comes to properly handling that
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: permission asking process? Yeah, so I guess the first step
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: would be, you know what you wear. We typically aware,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: I mean long pants that are somewhat nicer. I mean,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: you don't have to overdress or anything like that because
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: then you kind of look like a salesman and people
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: who practice shut it in your face. But just be presentable.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: And I mean I'll wear a college shirt every once
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: in a while, um, not all the time. We both
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: typically take our hats off because you don't want your
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: face to be covered up. Don't don't look like you
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: just we're tramping around in their backyard, you know, like
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: you've been in the woods all day. Just kind of
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: be you know, clean, just clean and presentable. And I
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: mean it's all about making them as comfortable as possible,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: as quickly as possible, because you have like a very
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: short window to do that before they're like no, not
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: not interested, Just get off my front porch. So I
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: mean there's there's different things that like we've we've kind
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: of learned over the years, even before we choose what
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: house to knock on. I mean, you can tell you
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: can tell a lot about a person just by the
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: car they drive, or the flags they have on the
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: front of their house, or you know they're uh, they're political,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: I guess posters in their front yards. So, um, I
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: think you can kind of make your own inferences from there.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: And then just just you know, if you can just
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: kind of the first thing, just kind of get them
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: say something that gets them comfortable, start a conversation and
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: about something in their yard or just like find common
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: ground I guess, um, just to get the conversation go
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: and get them talking, to get them kind of involved
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: in the conversation. And then, um, I think it's super
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: important kind of on along the lines of what least
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: said is like present that you are very experienced and
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: what you're asking to do on their property. So a
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: lot of times, you know, I'll start out with, hey,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: like I've I've been hunting in this area for twelve years,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: Like I've lived right down the road. Um, you know,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: I've I've just been trying to find a few more
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: spots to go to bow hunt for deer. I know
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: there's a ton of them around here. Um, you have
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: one of the largest, one of the largest lots in
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: the neighborhood or something, I'd love to be able to
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: do this on your property. And then they start asking questions, obviously,
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: and you just have to be prepared to answer all
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: the questions. You know, they might bring up, um like
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: I don't know, liability issues, or they might think you're
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: gonna shoot their dog or the neighbors kids or something
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: playing back there. Um, and they may they may have
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: questions about the actual you know, hunting regulations. So you
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: just have to be able to answer those questions. Um,
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: we gotta we get a quickly. Yeah, I would agree
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: with through on like, you know, having your just kind
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: of acting like, you know, this is nothing new to you,
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: You've been doing this for a while. But I also
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: am a big believer in like making your own story,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: developing your own story. So you know, if it's a
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: sixteen year old kid and this is his first story
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: that he's knocked on, be honest with them. You know,
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: you can talk about, Hey, you know, both hunting in
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Atlanta or whatever city wherever you're at. You know, it's
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: it's I know it's becoming popular, and you know I've
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: been doing my homework. I've been really practicing a lot,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: and you know that, to be honest with you, this
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: is my first time knocking on a door or and
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: I'm pretty nervous about it. But I just wanted to
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: have a conversation with you, like like tell your own story.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Don't don't make something up, but like to be honest,
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: but but kind of show them, almost make yourself a
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: little vulnerable to them to where it just kind of
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: takes their guard down. It helps them kind of connect
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: with you. So just because you know someone else's story
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: is is kind of different than mine. Yeah, we've we've
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: been doing this for a long time. Doesn't mean you
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: have to like, you know, try and paint that picture
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: that that this is something you've been doing forever. But
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: kind of like paint your own picture, like tell your
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: own story kind of however, that is just kind of
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: connect I think that's the biggest thing is being able
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: to connect with that land under where they kind of
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: see like hey there it's a good kid, or you know,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: you know, there could be a friendship here. Like you know,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: I would like to this kid that to hunt on
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: my property. I think he would as a landowner or
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: a homeowner, but like I think it would it would
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: make me a kind of smile to see him get
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: it here. Um, So that's kind of what I would say.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: It's just like, find something that works for you and
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: developed that and it just takes time, and it takes
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: a lot of rejections because we get a lot of rejections,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: and you find out what works, you find out what
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: doesn't work, and you just kind of tailor it from
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: there going forward. I mean, I think that that first
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: year we knocked on doors when we were sixteen, I
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: bet you we knocked on at least sixty doors and
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: one of them said yes. Yeah. Well at that time, yeah,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: for sure, numbers game. But it was like that first
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: year was the biggest learning experience for us. And now
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: that we've kind of developed our approach, like our success
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: rate of getting someone to say yes is substantially higher now.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: The I guess the next question then, is so you
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: you get how many different places like this if you're
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: going into a season with the kind of goals that
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: you guys have. So if you were, we're gonna assume
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: that you're relatively experienced deer hunters listening to this, and
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: you want to try to hunt mature bucks. Maybe you're
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: trying to do that in a suburban environment. Um, but
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: these properties are pretty small, maybe half acre, maybe five
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: acres somewhere around there. How many different spots like that
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: do you, guys try to have access to coming into
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: a given season that would put you in a position
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: where you feel good enough about having a chance at,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: you know, finding the kind of deer you're looking for.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: M hm. May as we can. Yeah, I mean it's
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: it completely depends on you know, what your goals are.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: We all, I mean, we always try to the goal
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: is to be able to get on a good buck,
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: you know, early season. So we're gonna go, We're gonna
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: keep searching in the summertime until we find the one
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: that we want to hunt. And uh and just pinpoint
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: you know, his his core area. Um. And then I
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: mean I'll give you if you if you find where
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: he is in the summertime, that you should have an
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: opportunity early season for you know, a couple of weeks
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: at least, uh to have a chance at him. But
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: then you know, obviously everything changes, um, once October rolls around,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: once once the runt rolls around, So there's different there's
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: different types of areas that we will target for different
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: times of the season. And you know, if you're if
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: you're targeting a buck during late October November, like you
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: need to have a bunch of spots to to really
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: have a good opportunity at killing that deer, especially if
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: there's other hunters hunting that deer. Um. I mean, Lee's
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: got one right now that I don't. I don't even
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: know how many spots you have, but I know you
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: have like seven cameras out at seven October, cellular cameras
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: out for him, and these you're just you know, make
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: their rounds. They just travel a loop that could be
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: two miles, it could be ten miles, um. So just yeah,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: the more spots you have, the better I mean, the
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: more you know about that year that the better odds
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: you are getting a pattern and just being at the
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: right place at the right time. So I think that's
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: something that is different that we do that that most
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: people don't. And I'll kind of circle back again to
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: that that first spot that we got. I told you that,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: you know, we would always get four or five six
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: shooters coming through there in November, and it was like
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: some of those dear you could tell we're a little
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: more local, showed up more often. And those were usually
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: the ones that, you know, when we hunted enough, we
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: get a chance at. But there was like, you know,
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: two or three of those bucks where we had no
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: clue where they were coming from. They were only there,
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: you know, once or twice, just kind of very inconsistent
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: and always at night. And it's like, well, you know, that,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: dear is just that's just his behavior. He's not huntable.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: We'll we'll never you know, kill that here. He's just
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: nocturnal or whatever. And so like we kind of ruled
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: those deer out and so kind of fast forwarding. For example,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: like Drew had a spot where I mean it was
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: like a it was like a hundred ninety it had
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: to have been a hunter nine year and it was
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: only coming at night, like the whole season, and we
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: were just like, yeah, the year's unkillable. He'll just it
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: was just our inexperience. But it was just like that,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: you know, he's not he's not he's not killable. You know,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: you know, might as well go hunt a different here.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: But what we do and have have kind of learned
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: is that that beer is showing up somewhere he's got
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: a place he's more comfortable with. It's more more close
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: to where he likes to bed down and more of
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: his time, and you gotta go find it. So all
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: a lot of our competition and other hunters here in Atlanta,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: you know, they have a family friend that they get
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: to put a camera out, or you know, they live
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: there and they put a camera out, and they have
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: that one spot and that one spot where they get
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: a picture of a buck and he's you know, maybe
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: showing up there pretty good a bit. Maybe he's just
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: kind of really sporadic. But what we do that's different
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: than that person that just has one spot is when
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: we when we locate that deer kind of like Drew
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: was saying, we'll go get ten other spots around it
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: and just kind of a scattered plot in all directions
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: from where that picture was taken of that deer, and
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: we really start kind of putting putting the pieces together
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: on where he's spending more time. We get really mobile
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: with these deer, kind of going after him moving around
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: a lot. Didn't places, you know, ten spots to hunt
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: one deer as to where most guys will have, you know,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: they're one spot and they'll they'll get the picture of
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: the deer and they'll just kind of ride it out
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: that spot. Maybe it happens there, maybe it doesn't, but yeah,
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: that's that's something we do. I think that's been our
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: biggest kind of secret that we've had to success, is
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: that we go after the deer and really find out
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: where they like to spend time. And just I think
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: it increases our odds so much when we can really
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: do our homework, um, studying tin cameras instead of just
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: one and be like, yeah, this this is the place
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: where he's spending the most time. This is where we
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: didn't go after and that I mean that kind of
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: goes back to the whole naming of the deer thing,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: like it just first of all, it makes it way
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: easier to talk about these deer when we when we
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: have a name for him, instead of trying to like
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: describe what they are, like the eight pointer with the
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: kickers and the drop time or whatever. But it also
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: just like chasing them down like that and spending so
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: much time, you know, getting permission and and putting cameras
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: out and whatnot, it just makes it so much more
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: personal and you just like have this attachment to this
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: dear because you put so much effort into it, and
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: so it's just almost like they deserve a name just
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: because you know they're they're a formidable opponent for sure,
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Like this dear could be right under your nose and
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: still he's you know, he's outsmarting you almost every single time.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: I mean, Lee's got a deer right now that he's
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: we know that this deer is like in this little
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: block of woods and Lee's got them surrounded, but he's not.
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: He and he shows up like at night or in
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: the middle of the day, just like randomly in the
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: middle of the day. And this year, just like he knows,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: he knows what's up, Like he knows when there's cameras out.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: He knows when we walked back there into his black woods.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean camera it's it's kind of crazy.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: And uh, you know, he he's completely no curnal at
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: least for now. But the only time he'll show up
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: in daylight is like high noon, noon, one o'clock. It's like, sorry, man,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: but I'm not I'm not gonna be hunting up all
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: day from noon to one like one. I've got a
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: job at too. You know that's just kind of crazy,
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: because I mean he shows up maybe maybe once a week,
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: once every other week at like noon. It's like I
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: have to sit for fourteen days all day just try
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: and get that one chance at him at noon. So
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: I think sometimes he's zer are just smarter than we
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: give him credit for. Um. I think sometimes they really
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: know more about what's going on than we really understand.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: So so, speaking then of that process and challenge of
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: trying to figure out these deer a little bit better
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: than they have us figured out, let's talk about how
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: you end up scouting these spots and and scouting and
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: understanding these individual deer too. So let's say you've got
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: permission on a bunch of these properties. Now, how do
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: you go in there and figure out how do you
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: hear using it? How do you find these individual bucks
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: and then tighten the noose a little bit on them?
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: Walk me through all the scouting, what kind of stuff matters,
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: what doesn't matter, etcetera. Mm hm, Well, I mean I
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: think it just depends on what time of year it is. Um,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: we can start with early seasons. Uh, luckily you were
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: saying before. I mean, tad zoo is one thing that
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: we look for a lot of the time in the summer, um,
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: just something you know, just like anywhere. I mean, it
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: doesn't necessarily dis pertain to the suburbs, but a buck
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: wants food, cover, and water. Um, So you get need
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: to find like in a secluded spot that's got all
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: three of those things to where the deer doesn't have
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: to move, you know, more than a couple of acres um.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: So I mean we'll look for that in the summertime
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: a lot of times. Um. It's kind of weird how
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: these deer uh travel and kind of pick the sauce
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: that they're gonna hide in. But more and more often,
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: I don't know if this is just do the hunting
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: pressure or just I don't know just how these year act.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: But we'll go find like the smallest block of woods
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: in the most secluded area, even when there's you know,
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: a hundred two hundred acres of woods with everything they
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: could possibly need, um, you know, within a half a
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: mile away. Um. So let'll just we'll get off into
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: these little tiny blocks of woods all summer long until
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: you know, late October, and then they'll go into these
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: big blocks of woods to go find dose and stuff
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: to chase around her in the rut. I don't know
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: if it's like they feel like really tight, kind of
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: bummed up, like everything is kind of just bubbled bottle
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: them up in there. But Drew's all right, like it
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: can't be open woods, so it's gotta be like really
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: really stick but sometimes super small little pockets. It's just like,
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: I don't know if they just feel like everything around
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: them is just kind of wrapping them up and they
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: just feel secure in there. But I mean, and they
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: can take over the whole area easily. Um, So yeah,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: I mean that's what we look for early season. And
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: what makes this even harder, which I want to make clear,
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: is like you can't just go stick cameras out anywhere
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: you want, Like you have to have permission to even
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: get scouting on that property. So that, I mean that
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: increases the time it takes by a hundred because you
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: have to go and actually get permission before you can
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: even know what the you know, what the woods are like,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: if there's water, if there's even you know, good year
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: back there. So we we spent weeks trying to get
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: one landen or so yes because we thought it was
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: a good spot, and we run a camera to the
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: whole year just to find out that there was not
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: a shooter there at all. It's like, well, that's a
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: couple of weeks was a huge waste of time. Not
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: not saying there won't be something there eventually, but like
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: you know, sometimes you know a lot of these places
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: you get are just dead ends, and that's why you
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: gotta have a lot of different things working. Um I
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: would say really like starting like right now is when
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: and even earlier to kind of answer your scouting question
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: is we love to use mox scrapes to get pictures
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: of deer, especially bucked and our deer gets can get
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: really territorial, so we loved and we'll you know, bend
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: branches down and do all kind of stuff to get
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: like the perfect looking branch and and break out just
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: a huge scrape and we'll put in scent and attractions
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: and stuff like that. And you know that's how we
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: get a lot of our pictures this time of year
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: and actually have a lot of our success too. Is
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: just really kind of pissing a deer off, getting in
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: an area where he likes and using a scrape to
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: just you know, kind of draw him back. The key
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: them kind of defending that little area. So yeah, and
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: one time, good I was just gonna say, that's that's
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: a really big cool of ours. Yeah. Um, one thing
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: we've kind of started to figure out is a lot
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: of times he's older mature bucks. If you run, you know,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: a pile of corn or something, we'll come to it
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: once or twice. Yeah. So yeah, baiting bill passed this year.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: You can hunt over bait. That's kind of what UM
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: has helped us kind of realize this. But we've all
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: we've realized it in the past. Is these mature, mature
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: deer know when you're getting punted, or maybe they know
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: when they're getting pictures taken on them, because they'll come
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: to a bay pile once or twice and then they
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: won't come back to it again, at least not you know,
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: not in daylight. So maks Graith is a much more
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: natural way to kind of get pictures a deer and
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: keep them around longer and uh, keep them from being suspicious.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: So it's it's really uninvasive. It's it's just really really natural.
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: Uh So I know, I know what your next question
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: is gonna be. You mean to head you off at
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: the past, How has how has the vading bill affected
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: y'all's deer season? What's Yeah, that's one of the things
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: that in my mind. So it's been kind of weird
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: for us this year. Um, you know, we've kind of
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: had to almost go back to the drawing board a
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: little bit on how learning how to kind of incorporate
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: vading and how it is effective, how it's not effective,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: and we're still trying to figure that out. Um. But
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: some of the stuff that we've kind of learned is like,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: for example, the year I'm after, he uh hates a
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: pile of corn. Like he'll kind of come to it
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: at night every now and then, but mostly he'll just
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: kind of linger in the back. He won't really come
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: to it. And I think it's just like he knows
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: it's not natural that was put there, and that he's
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: you know, it's just not it's not right in them.
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: So he's automatically kind of on edge when he sees that.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: And I've got you know, I've got hunters literally, not
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: like you know a few hundred yards away or you know,
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: a couple of miles away. I've got a dude next
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: door to the hunting and he's got feeders out and
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: I just I think that he is leery of that
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: feeder because he doesn't really go over there, but he
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: comes to me a lot more. And what I'm doing
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: is instead of having a feeder or a pile like
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: out kind of I've got we're kind of we're still experimenting.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: I've got places where we're not baiting, and we're running
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: cameras on scrapes and things like that, and white oaks
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: that we've got dropping. Uh. And then I've got a
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: place where I'm baiting, but I'm like kind of fancasting
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: the corn out instead of like a pile and just
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: kind of throwing it out just like if it were
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: falling off a tree. I think you're like to still
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: kind of graze around and feed around instead of walking
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: up to a big pile and start eating out of it.
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: I think it's just a little more natural to them. Um.
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: That seems to have helped me kind of get more
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: pictures of bucks um and just kind of get better activity. Uh.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: Is just doing that So to kind of answer your question, Uh,
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: it's still kind of to beat it. Well, I guess
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: my question. Uh, it's kind of still like to be
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: determined on exactly how it's gonna affect our season. Um,
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: you know, we went the first what two or three
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: weeks now the season has been opened and we haven't
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: killed a deer yet. So just because you can hunt
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: over bait doesn't mean it's making it easier for us.
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: At least. Yeah, you get younger deer that come to it,
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: But as far as like a you know, five plus,
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: it's just you know, and that's that does the type
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: of year we're going after, it's just so far for
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: us that has the help. So so two things. Number one,
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: I wish more of my guests were like you and
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: would just ask their own questions. They ask a question,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: they answer their own question, they ask it. I could
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: kick back and drink a beer and have a much
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: easier time. Um. And number two, I want to go
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: back to, um, the camera side of things that you
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: talked about how you ran cameras on some piles, You've
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: ran some cameras on the mox scrapes, and how the
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: mox scrapes seem to be more natural and maybe work
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: a little bit better. Um. I want a little more
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: detail on the camera strategy. So are you just putting
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: like one camera out on each little property? Or do
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: you have some kind of method to the madness as
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: far as like how many acres you want per section
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: or anything like that, And do you change that from
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: early season to the run or is there any other
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: things going on there as far as your camera strategy?
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: And I guess, well more I do I do this.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: I do like these rapid fire ten questions at once,
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: and it's probably tough on people. Um, what about when
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: you get one specific deer that you're after, you you
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: put the camera out there, you get zeus on there, like,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: holy smokes, this is the deer I want to hunt.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: Do you then like take your cameras from everywhere else
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: and then blanket this one little area? Um, answer all
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: those les. Definitely, we're going to get television on a deer.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: He uh when he finds that one deer that he wants.
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: So Lee has like I can't I don't even know
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: how many properties he has in Atlanta, but it's over
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: that he has permission on and he'll get he'll find
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: this one box that he wants to kill, and he'll
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: pull all of his cameras and I won't even look
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: at other properties the rest of the season, at least
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: until he kills that deer and just you know, uses
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: all those resources to uh to hunt that deer, which
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: I mean that's a lot of times, like that's what
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: it takes for some of these mature bucks. Um. And
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: you know there's there's always getting mad and bad for
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: me because I forget about spots I have. Yeah. Uh,
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: I'm over here trying to find a year to kill
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: and I can't find one. And he's got like all
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: these awesome spots that he don't even have cameras out at.
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: It's kind of frustrating. But um, but no, I mean
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: as far as camera strategy goes, it just completely depends
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: on the property. You know, the layout of the property,
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: the size, um, what you're running it over. Time of year,
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: I think early season. You know, it's just it's all
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: about getting as many cameras out in as many different
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: places as you can. Um in early season, you know,
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: running it over corn isn't gonna isn't gonna bother the deer.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: They know that they're not being hunted hunted that time
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: of year, all right, I guess not early season, but
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: pree preseason, um will come to a polecorn in daylight.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: So it's you know, you could be getting pictures of
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: a group of bucks at one spot, and then a
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: hundred yards two hundred yards away there's a completely different
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: group of bucks. And you know, you just have to
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: continue to move your cameras around that time of year
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: see everything that's out there. When when I too, like
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: late October November rolls around. Just like Lee was saying
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: about that first spot that we got, there's so many
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: little pockets of woods scattered through these neighborhoods that bucks
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: hide in, and when they start moving, they just come
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: out of come out of the woodwork. Like we think
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: that we have this whole area covered with cameras and
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: we know all the year there and that's never the case.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: Like we are always surprised when a giant buck shows
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: up and we're like, where in the world did that bear?
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: Tone from the perfect example that is our buddy just
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: killed a twenty pointer, believe it or not, like a
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: week ago, and he had pictures of that beer two
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: years ago. I had just a few pictures of it.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: Never saw the deer again for two years. The year
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: was just gone. And he was like, well, you know,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: I guess someone who got hit by car or you
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: know whatever, and hoole. He shows back up this year
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: and he's at twenty points and he, you know, successfully
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: took that deer. But Drew was like right next to him.
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: Drew's got spots all around him, Drew's never seen the here.
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: It was just like, where in the world was this dear?
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: Where did he come from? Where was he hiding? He's
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: twenty points, He's pretty recognizable. Um so yeah, I mean
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: the they literally just like sometimes they're just ghosts and
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: just vanish and we don't know that. I think that's
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: something that intrigues us so much about him, is that,
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: like you know, sometimes when you kill a deer, you
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: get people that message you and they say, oh, yeah,
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: I I took yourself him here. I was hunting with
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: your here, And you're like really because they're you know,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: five miles from you, and um, you know they're there.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: Just seems to be when you can kind of put
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: the missing information that you wish you had kind of
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: along the way together and it just sometimes it amazes you.
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: Where do these deer travel from, where they come from,
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: where they go and things like that. But um, kind
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: of what Drew said about like sometimes and it's kind
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: of circling back to your question of you know, putting
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: out cameras. Do we try and you know spread them
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: out or close together kind of? Sometimes we will literally
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: put cameras. I know, for uh, this year that I'm after,
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: I've got cameras and some of them are you know,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: a hundred yards from each other, and I get completely
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: different activity on each of them. I get bucks on
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: the camera hundred yards away that I've never seen on
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: the other one that's a hundred yards to the beast
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: of it. So sometimes it's like, you know, very very
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: small amounts of movement of distance. Where you put it,
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: you're gonna get completely new dear. Um. So sometimes yeah,
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: I mean we're putting cameras out that are a hundred
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: yards apart. Sometimes there are two miles apart, three miles apart.
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: So uh, we always have kind of operated under the
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: code of leave no stone unturned, um, So you know,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: we are not afraid to put cameras just a hunt
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: as a little as the hundred yards apart from each other,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: even if it's just you know, crossing one little neighborhood road. Um,
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: you just get all kinds of new activity from each
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: do you do you do you do anything different as
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: far as your camera placement to account for they're being
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: more people walking around maybe. I mean, if you're putting
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: a camera in someone's backyard, do you worry about that
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: or do you worry about them seeing it and being
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: weirded out or taking it or or does that not happen?
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: It happens. It happens all of the time a lot.
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: And actually one thing that's kind of help that is
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: we started using uh cellular cameras, and I think when
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: people walk across that in the woods and they see
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: a big intent on it, they immediately realize that we
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: already have a picture of them. So a lot of
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: times I end up end up leaving it. But I
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: mean we don't do this and a lot of people
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: we'll put them kind of up in trees facing down. Um,
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: but I mean we just always try to We always
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: try to pick a tree that's not obvious, it's not
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: like out and open and like use like lock boxes
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: and stuff. Yeah, there's some places like it's guaranteed to
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: get stolen unless you have a lock box on it.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: So the place where this year that I'm kind of
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: after that, I mean, this year should be like way
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: over two. Um, it's in the it's in like the ghetto.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: Like it is very very very sketchy. So all the
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: cameras I have there, I have like double bolted to
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: the tree. Uh, and we do that. We'll do the
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: same with our stands of of you know, bolting into
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: the tree because we've you're just getting a different dynamic
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: in the city that you know, you're gonna have people
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: walking across your stuff and um, so you know, yeah,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: we've we've dealt with in the past and a lot
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: of stuff getting stolen. Yeah, we've some places we've beat
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: up our security and another aspect of it because you
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: just you don't want people knowing that you're hunting back there.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: I guess you never know who the neighbor is. I mean,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: if they're a huge anti hunter and they see your
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: stand or your camera back there, you know they could
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: they could call the neighbor and freak out and you
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: lose permission. So just flying under the radar in every
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: aspect um is super super important. Yea, So how do
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: you do that? I've seen some of your videos, like
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: you're thinking about when you go in and out of
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: your stands, waiting until after darks that people want to
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: see you things like that. Can you elaborate a little
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: bit on how you can stealth mode hunt in the suburbs. Yeah. So,
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: first of all, I've made this mistake many times. I'm
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: sure Lee has too. Is once if you get a spot,
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: it's on a certain street and it's a good spot, Um,
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: don't don't knock on any more doors because you can
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: knock on you know, you may try to string a
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: few properties to the other just so you have room
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: to move. But odds are someone who's not going to
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: be um in favor of hunting, and you could end
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: up losing that spot that you already have. So something
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: already happen this Yeah, it happened just this year on
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: a giant deer that kindles hunting and uh permission. Yeah,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: and the deer's been shown up there in daylight ever since.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: So that's that's the first aspect. And then you know,
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: just a lot of times, will carry your camera, just
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: wear street clothes and put our camera on kind of
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: like behind the house. Um, we'll try not Yeah, we'll
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: try not to park, you know, our trucks on the street.
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: We'll try to We'll try to get permission to pull
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: our cars, like down the driveway and I'll come in
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: side of the house. There's a There's have been times
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: where I think it was for Zeus to actually, uh
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: Lee drove his dad's Mercedes or something like in the
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: borrow car a little Backfie'll run flyer the radar so
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: people don't see this truck sitting on the side that
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: Roy is gonna block the woods and be like, yeah,
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: I wonder what that guy's doing. And some of these
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: spots are so precious that like you just do everything
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: you can to not lose permission. Like for for example,
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: this year, we call them nine Lives. You know, Kindle's
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: actually hunting him here showing up all summer um, you know,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: season open, and he was kind of gone for a
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: couple of weeks, but then like boom, he shows back
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: up for Kindles over there hunting, hunting, hunting, And then
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: I guess a neighbor took note of his truck and
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: basically found out he was hunting, went to like I'm
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: not kidding, went to every single neighbor on that entire
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: street in that neighborhood and made a huge deal about it.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: I mean, just completely blew it out of proportion, and
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: Kendall had like two or three spots in this neighborhood
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: and lost all of them at the drop of a
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: half because of one neighborhood. And like Drew said, literally
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: the day after he lost permission, this deer shows up
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: like six pm, broad daylight, and then like the next
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: day boom shows up again like day like just almost
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: like taunting him. He just yeah, Um, So we really
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: try to treat every spot that we get with just
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: really tender hands, and we that might have been a
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: weird way to say it, but we streed him with
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: care because we take care of our landowner. You know,
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: we'll bringing gift cards or you know, honey, big ham
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: or kind of whatever, thanks to doing just stuff that
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: you know, they wouldn't expect you to do. That really
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: kind of locks in that they want you to be there,
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: but to you know, just we dress in normal clothes.
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: Like for zeus, you know, I was afraid of losing
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: any of these spots because that was the biggest deer
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: we've ever hunted, and it's like you lose one spot
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: and then it's like you may not get it chance
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: of that dear. So I was leaving my bow and
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: my bowcase under these people's back deck with all my camo.
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: So whenever we would part, we'd walk back in normal clothes,
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: changed under their back back by their swing set, and
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: then walk through the woods and get in our stand
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: and then coming out, take off the clothes, put the
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: bow back in the case. And it was just so
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: that we were always seeing coming out, not in camo,
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: not with a bow and stuff like that. Um so
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: you know, that's that's kind of it's it's really important. Also,
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: we we don't put any hunting stickers on our trucks
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: because if people see a truck with hunting sticker, just
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: rais his red flags. And um yeah, there's kind of
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: a lot of things we do to just try and
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: have a small foot front as possible. So so I'm
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: kind of skipping a bunch of steps here, so I'm
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: gonna jump to the end and then I'm gonna pull
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: us back. But what about the situation where you've shot
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: a deer and you are now tracking it or trying
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: to recover a deer. Given all these things we've just
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: talked about, trying to stay under the radar, trying not
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: to tick off people who maybe don't like hunters. How
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: do you handle that whole deal? This is where the
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: fun begins. Yeah, so promote Georgia. You you cannot legally,
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: you cannot regally go on someone else's property without permission,
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: even if you've shot a deer, killed the deer whatever.
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: A lot of states, you know, they allow you to
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: do that here. I mean, some people say you can
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: call the game boarden. If if the game warden came
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: out there and helped you, he'd be doing you a favor.
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: Like that is not normal occurrence. So yeah, I mean
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: you have to go knock on their door and get
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: permission and and say, hey, do you mind if I
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: retreat this deer off your property? So the Zeus story
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: is another perfect example that leads this dear God, I
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: don't know what fifty yards maybe yard off the property.
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: And Lee had to go knock on this lady's door
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: at nine o'clock at night, and she was definitely asleep,
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: and she came out in her nightgown and just like
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: basically wanted to lead it. She was just like s
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: contin used and Lee orchards magic and somehow convinced her
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: that it wasn't a big deal, and and she said yes,
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: but I mean if she had to know, like it
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: would be to her, we'd be scrambling trying to get
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: maybe asked the game ward to help us out, or
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: I mean it's if that doesn't work out, then I
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: mean there's really nothing you can do. Yeah, I mean
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: if that, if that lady would have said, no, I
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: can't go get that deer. You know, thirty yards across
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: our property line. There's nothing you can do about it.
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: So you know, in that case, if that would have happened,
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: we probably would have called the game warden and had
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: him trying to help out that situation. Um. But yeah,
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: I mean we've we've had some look this of Atlanta,
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: it's a melting pot. Not everybody here and loves hunting.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: And you learn that when you knock on a hundred doors,
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: we get all kind of reactions from people, anything and
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: everything from the sun. I've I've literally knocked on the
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: door before they had a giant totem pole in their
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: front yard, like it was kind of weird. But whatever
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: knocked on the door and I was like, hey, you know,
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: gave my little spiel and basically asked her to hunt,
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: and she was like she just looked at me like
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: her jaw and hit the floor and was just like
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: you see that totem pole like yeah, it's like you
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: see the top of it. Like yeah. She was, well,
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: that's are you know some so and so symbol of
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: the deer and that like that is our God, that
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: is our religion, that is our faith. You are literally
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: murdering our god. Gets the f off my property? And
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: she called the cops, And I mean, you're you're, you know,
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: knocking on people's doors. You're doing what you're supposed to
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: be doing, but still people call the cops on you,
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: and cops show up and causes Shane so like you,
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: just like you, you get all kind of reactions from
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: people that are like, you know, I hate the dear,
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: kill them all. And then you get people that are like,
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: no that I worship here. So um that in your
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: question on the Even in the Zoos video, even after
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: we got permissions to retrieve them, you can see in
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: the video like we're tracking without flashlights. I think Leasy
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: using his cell zone light to follow the blood. And
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: that's because I mean there's other houses, you know, backing
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: up to those properties, and if they see some some
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: people snooping around with slashlights in the middle of the night,
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: like they're gonna, they're gonna. So. Um, you just have
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: to be mindful of everyone around you, even if you're
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: doing everything legally, Like, you just want to draw as
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: little attention to yourself as possible in that in that scenario.
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: But there have been cases where, uh, I've told the
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: story before, but when uh, when there's a blood trail
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: going down the middle of a sidewalk's hard to find
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: under the radar. That's definitely happened to us before. But
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: when deer cross roads bleeding, it's a great place to
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: find blood. If you lose blood, just go up to
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: the sidewalk and you know, you can see him clear
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: as day. If there's a good blood trail going across
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: the road, you pick it back up. Man. Now, what
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: about getting a deer in, you know, from the woods
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: into your vehicle? Do you wrap them up in a
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: tarp or something like that and carry him out? I mean,
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: if assuming you can't get your truck back to the
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: wood edge, Um, I mean, people might think you're pulling
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: a body out. Yeah, I'm gonna say, we don't use
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: tarps for that reason. This is Atlanta. Yeah, people would
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: definitely think for dragging a dead body out. But we uh,
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: we like to um a lot of times well you know,
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: if it's in the evening, we'll just wait till it's
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: like completely dark. Um. But other times we'll get our
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: truck as close as we possibly can to the woods
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: and we'll kind of have a scout of, like you know,
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: looking around, making sure nobody's looking, and then we'll just
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: do it as quick as we possibly can. So it
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: is exactly like pulling a dead body out. Oh man,
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: I quite the process. That's uh, quite the process. Okay,
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: so let's let's let's rewind then back to where we
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: were in the whole journey though. So we've we've gotten permission,
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: we've ran cameras, we're finding the deer were interested in hunting.
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: Now you actually start hunting these deer, um, And maybe
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: maybe you can use an example like this mega deer
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: you're hunting this year, lead or anything you've been chasing, Drew,
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: how what's your mindset as the season begins and you
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: go through the year, Um, what kind of spots are
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: you typically keing in on, Like are you just hunting
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: where you get these pictures or do you focus on
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: all right, food sources in the early seasons, pinch points
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: during the ruck kind of like guys are doing across
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: the rest of the country. Um, kind of walk us
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: through that year of of hunting style strategy. Well, I mean,
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: I think you definitely have to be cognizant of the
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: changing food source. Um. You know, right now is when
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: acorn trees start dropping. Um. But I mean we're we're
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: not hunting until we have daylight for multiple daylight pictures
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: of that that book. So um, we're yeah, And that's
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: something we've kind of learned the hard way over over
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: the years. Like we used if we for a long
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: time ago we got like one one daylight picture of
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: a buck, we'd be in there every day and just
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: like you know, just waiting it out, hoping he'd chow up.
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: This season, Lee hasn't even hunted yet this season and
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: it's been three weeks and uh, you know, he's just
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: laiting on the right time to uh to go in
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: there with this little bit more damage than good and
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: you're walking in and out, you're sending up the area.
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: It's just not the right time to kill that deer.
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: And you're just literally I think you're just shooting yourself
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: in the foot if you're just going at it, you know,
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: too prematurely. Yeah, and so I mean to answer your question,
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: we this time the year, you know, we're gonna look
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: for white oak trees um that are about to drop
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: acorns or the dropping acorns, and a lot of times
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: you know the bust will will come to those at
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: some point. But that doesn't necessarily mean that those bucks
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: are gonna be betting um, or that they're gonna be
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: killable where those trees are. So the camera strategy of
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: constantly moving them around and just covering as much area
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: as possible really never changes. Um. The only time it
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: may change a little bit is peak rutt and you
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: just you just want to be in a travel corridor
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: where you're just getting as many pitchers as possible. Um.
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: But so yeah, I mean this time. I think another
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: thing is like we're dealing with sometimes really tight property lines,
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: and it's like, you know, the the property next door
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: is the one that's got the white oaks that are falling,
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: and it's just torn up with rubs and stuff, and
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: it's like, well, you know, they said no, can't get
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: over there, so the beggars can't be choosers in that case.
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: You know, we try to there's some places where our
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: spots are an acre Crew's got a spot that's eight
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: hundred acres, but most of them are smaller acreages, and
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: you know you can't you don't have a whole lot
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: of room to move around. So we try to really
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: maximize our spots as much as possible. So what we'll
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: do is, like I said, you know, we'll put in
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: mock scrapes. I've actually done it this year just for
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: fun to try. I've actually made rubs myself on trees
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: just to try and show signs of another dominant buck
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: to just try and kind of fire ups out of
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: their buck in there. Um. And then we'll put in
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: uh we do a lot of food plots, a lot
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: of like wheat food plots and stuff. Just really trying
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: to maximize that little acres that you do have, try
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: and show a lot of you know, deer activity. They're
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: trying to draw in deer to that spot because you know,
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: you really are limited on how mobile you can be
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: in some of these areas, so trying to maximize you know,
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: kind of the cards were dealt with. The problemy we
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: have is is definitely, you know, something we try to
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: do for sure, and a lot I mean a lot
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: of times, like in a lot of areas, there are
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: acorn trees everywhere, and there's a ton of Yeah this
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: is it's not flat land like Atlanta is pretty pretty hilly,
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: and there's tons of creek bottoms, little draws and stuff.
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: So you know, are area could have five different little
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: streams that the deer could drink out of, It could
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: have you know, a hundred different acorn trees. So it's
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: it's pretty tough to pinpoint them based on just knowing
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: where like the food sources, because it could be it
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: could be anywhere. Um, and that just you know, lends
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: itself again, so you're just covering as much as much
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: territory as po school. Yeah, kind of going back to
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: like how limited you are in some of these places.
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: That first year that I told you about, Charlie, there
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: was like a nine pointer. I watched them opening day
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: of deer season, beat around in broad daylight at a
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: hundred yards and there was nothing I could do about
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: it because I didn't have I didn't have right the
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: right permission there and he wasn't coming to my other areas.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: So you know, sometimes you really are just kind of
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: limited there. There's just places you can't access. And I
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: feel like these these deer know that, and that's kind
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: of some of the places they hone in on. And
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: that's why you know a lot of these deer you know,
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: find these safe areas and can get to the right
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: age is that they've kind of found that area where
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: no one can get to. And sometimes that's just it
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: is what it is. Just you can't get in there,
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: so you maximize what you can where you are to
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: when he starts moving, hopefully will spend some more time
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: kind of in your little block that you've got permission. So,
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: speaking of those kinds of things, Lee, I've seen you
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: you use these mini plots that you mentioned there where
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: it looks like on in someone's back five acres or whatever,
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: you've got this little quick and dirty, tiny food plot.
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: Can you talk about how you get that in there
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: and how that helps you? So what really helps is
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: having a hose that runs from their house. Did you
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: water their food? Um? We've spent a lot of time
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: kind of manicuring our food plots, well mostly just plant
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: wheat um and we you know, go in and kind
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: of brake up and blow out an area. Um. We
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: we'll grow pretty much anywhere. UM. So we just kind
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: of throw it out and it'll take and UM. Yeah, literally,
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: I've I've like I've got those uh what are those
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: hoses that like expand and then shrink when you're not
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: using them. They're kind of expensive. But you know what
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: hoses them talking about. I don't think I do. They're
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: like they're like we're tracking. Yeah, they're like shrivel up
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: when you're not using them, and then and they're super lightweight.
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: And then when you look them up and have water
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: coming through them, they'll like expand like balloon out. Um. Anyways,
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: the point of that is that like I'll have I
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: have like four of those that I can connect, and
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: I have like you know, twot of hose that I
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: can you know, run from. I'll just keep it in
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: my truck and you know, I can run it from
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: someone's uh back water faucet and run it all all
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: the way down through the woods down to my food plot.
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: Sit there and you know, if it's not getting much rain,
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: I'll sit there and you know, water it once a week,
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: keep it coming in really good. Um. And we also
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: use leaf flowers, making sure we keep all the leaves out. Um,
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: it's kind of funny. I mean we could, we can
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: talk about a million different things, but you know when
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: we I always see more your activity. When I take
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: a leaflower and blow in blow out the food plot,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: I just think it gets like fresh earth in the air,
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: just like some I don't know, just fresh kind of
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: dirt smell going on. But it's like every time we
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: blow off our food plot, it's like that next day
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: or that night and that next couple of days falling, like,
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: we always see a lot more activity, do you ever? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: for Charlie, Like there was a couple of times where
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: we like literally we'd go in with a leaf blower, right,
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: we'd be in Camo and Drewid climb up in the
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: tree and I'd take a leaflower and be blowing the
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: food plot off and walk up the hill, put the
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: leaflower down, come climb up into deer stands. I'll I'll
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: tell you what, I've never heard of Mark Surrey doing
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: something like that. You guys are bourbon tactics. Didn't you
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: have an encounter with Charlie while you're blowing the plot off?
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: So I was this was like Charlie has was gone
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: for like this is October ish, late October, he was
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: gone for like a week. Like kind of getting down,
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, he's not showing up. I go in
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: there to blow off the food plot. I put my
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: leaf flower down, and it's like kind of going down
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: the hillside, and it's like as soon as I turned
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: my leaf flower off, I look up and he's like
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: fifteen yards behind me, just staring at me. Wow. And
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: I didn't I don't know how long you're staying here.
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: I don't know what was going on, But like I
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: turned around and looked at him. It's like as soon
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: as we made eye contact, it was like he just
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: had a huge middle finger pointing at me and just
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: like bounded off. And we had been hunting him pretty
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: hard at that point and he was just totally just
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: destroying us. Yeah. Um, there's not a if if I
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: were to say, like, it's funny, if I were to say, like,
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: there's a sound that reminds me of deer season, it's
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: roaring leaf blowers. That's the best thing I've ever heard.
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: Every single time we're hunting, we're here in leaf flowers
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: going on. That's terrible. Especially in the filming aspect of it.
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: Like you can't film interviews all around you is your mind.
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: You can't. You can't hear deer walking around like you
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: just have to you have to rely on your eyesight
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: because you know, the deer could be right under you
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: and you can't even hear it. Another great thing we
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: have to our advantage here is that like sometimes dogs
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: will let you know when you're coming. Yeah, but like
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: if people have dogs in their backyard and they see
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: do you're walking by, like you know, we'll hear a
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: dog like a hundred yards away, just like all right
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: here you come, come comes some deer coming like some
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: over there. So so this brings me to then another
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: thing I've been wondering about when watching what you guys
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: are doing and hearing about it is how human activity
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: impacts things. And then this is a two part question.
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: In part one, how do other humans impact your hunting?
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: So how do the neighbors and people blowing their yards
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: and doing landscaping and playing with the kids in the
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: backyard eight yards away your huntre yards away? How does
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: that impact your hunting? And then number two, because there's
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: all this other stuff going on, does that impact how
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: much you can get away with. So, because these deer
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: are used to people walking around and playing around and
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: making a lot of noise, do you not worry about
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: the pressure you're putting on these deer as much or
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: your exits and entryways all that kind of stuff, Like
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: how does all that work? Yeah, so that's definitely something
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: that we've kind of learned over the years. The hard way. Yeah,
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: definitely the hard way. I mean we used to just
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: kind of go in if we have a five ache
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: for block of woods, maybe a free bottom. We used
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: to go in there and find the perfect tree, you know,
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: on the best trail, and go all the way in
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: that block of woods and set up shops. Now we've
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: kind of learned that these deer like the closer that
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: you get to these that you stay to these houses, Um,
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: I guess the more of their guard is down. But
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: that but so like if you're i mean, if there's
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: kids playing in someone's backyard where they're always playing, you know,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: if they're like in the grass area or whatever and
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: they're not in camera, they're not. Um, that's where deer
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: can tell, like if you're in normal clothes or camera
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: and if you're if you're just talking like a normal
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: voice level or trying to like sneak around. They can
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: tell the difference, and um, I think they have like
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: this this line behind you know, houses where they are
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: used to normal human activity. But then as soon as
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: you step over that line, they're like, okay, wait a second,
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: you're not supposed to be back here. Um, So we've
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: kind of we've kind of figured out, you know, how
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: to flirt with that line and use that to our advantage.
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: So definitely, I think, I mean, I don't have a
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: ton of experience hunting big woods. I mean, like we said,
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: I have spots or eight acres my parents had, I've
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: had a farm for a long time. Um, But I
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: mean I would say the deer when you get into
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: their woods, which should only be you know, a couple
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: of acres, they are just as skittish and just as
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: where as any other deer you know outside the suburbs.
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: But if you can kind of like splirt with that
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: line of um, normal human activity, then you can you
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: can definitely use that to your advantage. We get busted
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: in the tree all the time, whether it's they are
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: seeing our movement or you know, getting our scent. We
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: we paid attention to our our window lot, but we
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: get busted all the time. Um, so these deer are
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: not you know, I have friends are like, oh, you know,
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: you don't have to worry about sent in Atlanta. They're
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: so used to human center. Well that's not true at all.
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: Not sure, it's not true. They know what a human
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: scent is and they know where it's appropriate to smell it.
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: But when you're in the middle of the wood and
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: they smell it and they can't find you, they're gone.
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: They know when something is different. And if you're walking
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: around and a back yard and normal clothes, you know,
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: they won't pay you too much attention. But if you're
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: walking around and camouflage, they know it's different. They are gone.
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: Um so access for us is huge. Uh. We, like
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: Drew said, we kind of used to get down in
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: the middle of the you know, the best place we could.
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: But what we realized we were doing was we were
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: leaving so much sense going in and out and in
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: and out that the deer just stopped using that area.
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: So we've really learned try to like have as our
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: keep our footprint in the deerwoods as small as possible,
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: So try and keep our you know, distance to and
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: from the stand that uh, you know, as as small
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: as possible kind of going trying to trying to walk
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: in areas with a deer aren't gonna be using as
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: much just trying to get in quiet minimal presidents slip
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: out quiet um, you know, minimal presence, so that these
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: deer absolutely no and there's a lot of human activity
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: in their territory and they don't like it. Um. That
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: being said, one thing that we do, we have done,
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: and we did we do it this year. We've done
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: it this year is that you know, if we get
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: busted in the tree and they don't know what it
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: is or what's going on, or you know, they just
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: know that it's danger and they've blown out and there
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: if they're still kind of lingering around and we're gonna
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: get down from the stands uh, and it's like in
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: the evening, it's getting dark, we'll climb down and and
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: immediately we'll start talking to each other walking out of
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: the woods. Because I think that these they are so
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: used to hearing people talk on their back deck and
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: you know, yelling to scream at the kids whatever, that
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: they're used to that and they've kind of hopefully associate
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: talking and things like that was something that's not dangerous,
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: not something that's trying to If you're quiet and slipping
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: out of the woods, they're like, something's quiet, it might
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: be stalking me acting like the predator. A coyty doesn't
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: go running up to a deer, you know, saying, hey,
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: look at me here, I am just you know, kind
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: of talking the whole time. It's slipping up quiet. So
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: you know, if we get busted and we're climbing down,
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: like we'll immediately just start talking to each other. Hopefully
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: they kind of associate us just with you know, what
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: they've heard on people's back decks and stuff, and and
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: hopes that it kind of you know, minimalizes that predator
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: type you know, presence in that area. Um, but like
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: you know, we have deer that find us in trees
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: and we'll have to pull our stands down and get
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: into the completely relocate because they know where you're at
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: and they'll check it and all that stuff. So, um,
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: it's still Atlanta, still the suburbs. There's things that we do,
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: um that play to our advantage, like talking and things
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: like that, but um, they definitely are still wild animals
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: and they've learned to adapt here um and survive, especially
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: these older mature bucks. These these mature bucks have have
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: zero tolerance for people getting in their turf. The does
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: and younger bucks and stuff, they're a little more tolerant,
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: like they'll come back. But you know, if we if
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: we have a deer, a mature buck, bust us in
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: the stand or send us or something like forget about it.
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: Just go find somewhere else to relocate or reset up
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: on that deer. Yeah. This uh, this kind of acting
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: like a normal neighborhood person strategy that you talked about
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: when you're leaving the stand. Do you ever do that
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: during the middle of the day when you're like trying
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: to scout a new property or maybe you have to
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: hang a new stand. I feel like I remember seeing this,
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: maybe in like your Bin series you're hunting this buck,
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: and I feel like I remember you walking into some
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: new property you got permission on and you're talking and
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: filming and like, all right, this is the true we
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: got a hunt. And I'm sitting there thinking, holy smokes,
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: is the middle of the season. They're walking around hollering
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: and hanging stands. But it kind of makes sense that
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: maybe you do it on purpose because to your point,
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: they differentiate between the two different types of two to
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: the type of activity. It depends again, we're like trying
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: to flirt with that line of where they're used to
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: human presence. And most of the time, you know the
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: spot where that you're talking about where he's hunting ban
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: I mean that was like right in someone's backyard basically,
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: so the deer most likely was not betting down within
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: sound distance from there. But yeah, I mean scouting. I
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: mean we're not wearing cameo and sneaking around and stuff
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: like there. The deer used to kids and stuff walking
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: through the woods every once in a while. Um, so
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: that's that's definitely subsolently, I know, if you're talking about
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: with the band episodes and and yeah, you're right. So
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: that was we pulled up to the spot. It's basically
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: just like a just a hardwood ridge, and um, I
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: remember I said, you know, I'm gonna get out of
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: the truck and walk up in normal clothes. I think
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: I had been you know, binoculars. I was looking and
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: that that was in the case that if he was
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: betted there, or if there was year there, you know,
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: hopefully they would kind of look at us and kind
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: of ease on off instead of us trying to sneak
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: to the stand first and camo and having those deer
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: see us and just completely blow out of there. Yeah.
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: Um so yeah, there are some cases where like I
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: walked up in normal clothes, they see it. You know,
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: there was some construction going on houses and stuff there,
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: so they say, see people there a lot um to
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: try and you know push some of those gear out
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: because they would bed like right under the stand. Yeah
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: that was right before we got the stand, wasn't it.
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: So you walked up there right, and then you came
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: back and we changed and then that's that's actually the
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: night that we killed him, right yep, mans a heck
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: of a deer. That was a great looking buck. You
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: guys were able to get on, so obviously what you
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: guys did worked. Um So back to this whole idea
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: of these dear being understanding of a certain level of
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: certain level of human activity, and it seems like there's
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: ways you can take advantage of that while still obviously
- 2:00:05Speaker 1: still need to be careful. But does this also allow
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: you when you are hunting on that that flirting with
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: that edge, that edge where it's okay versus not okay.
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: Does that allow you to hunt certain spots more than
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: maybe someone might be able to otherwise. I mean, I
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: feel like lots of times when I'm talking to guys
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: that are hunting these rural farms, you know, there's not
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: a lot of people out there, ever, the pressure is
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: very very low. They oftentimes we talk about, you know,
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: that first set is your very best chance, and then
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: it's going to go down significantly after that because they
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: pick up on that human scent and activity very quickly.
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: You just have a time or two in these kinds
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: of scenarios where you're hunting the edge of that human
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: activity line. Can you find those right spots you can
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: hunt over and over and over as long as you
- 2:00:49Speaker 1: play your cards right and get away with it because
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: they're used to some of that. Yeah, I think so.
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: I mean, there's definitely differences between advantages and disadvantages in
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: the suburbs versus you know, hunting big woods, and that's
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: probably that's definitely one of them. Um understand though. Yeah,
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: you have to be in the right you have to
- 2:01:14Speaker 1: have your your stands set in the night spot for sure. Yeah,
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: I think you can get away with more. But if
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: it's like you know, a place where we're getting in
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: the in the thick of it with them, then no,
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: I would say that it's the exact same scenario, that
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: your first set is definitely your best odds, and that
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: that kind of goes back to why we study cameras
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: so much like we do and not hunt until that
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: time is right. Yeah, that makes sense. Um So, I
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: don't know if you want to elaborate on that at all,
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: but well, no, no, I definitely agree with that, Like
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: you have to and you have to follow, you know,
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: those rules of worried that you are used to the
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: human activity, and that goes for if you're in the
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: suburbs or you're not, um I mean, and you know,
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: the deer in the suburbs are more used to human
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: activity in certain areas than they would be in the
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: big woods. But in the big woods you have the
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: advantage of being able to you know, you have a
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: lot more room to work with and a lot more
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: room to play the wind. You know, different trees to
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: set up in and in the suburbs, a lot of
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: times you have if if you're lucky, you have that
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: one tree that you can choose from and you just
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: have to make it work. So I think it's a
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: lot of give and take. Yeah. Sure, Now, based off
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: all of this, I can kind of assume the answer
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: to my next question. But what about other people messing
- 2:02:39Speaker 1: up your hunts. Let's say someone decides to go walk
- 2:02:42Speaker 1: their dog behind the house and walks all around you,
- 2:02:45Speaker 1: or you know, kids come running through. Is that the
- 2:02:48Speaker 1: kind of thing that obviously it spooks off the deer
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: right at that moment, but you're like, Okay, we'll sit
- 2:02:53Speaker 1: it out because they're used to that deer will come
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: back through eventually, maybe once these people move off. Is
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: that the case that happens a quite actually, Um, But
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: I think it's more of a thing where like it
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: may spook them off for that time being, but the
- 2:03:09Speaker 1: next day is a fresh day, and they don't really
- 2:03:13Speaker 1: care or remember about you know, that person walking their
- 2:03:15Speaker 1: dogs in the back of in the in the woods,
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: because that's just something they've kind of come to know,
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: So it's not it's not if it's something they've seen. Yeah,
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: it may spook them off for the time being, but
- 2:03:29Speaker 1: it's not gonna be something that's gonna be like a
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: permanent memory in their mind where they're like, I'm avoiding
- 2:03:33Speaker 1: that area. Something where it's like you're in the stand
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: and they sent you, or they spot you in the
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: stand and see you there. That's something that stands out
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: to them and would be something where they would definitely
- 2:03:44Speaker 1: like vacate that area and not come back. Um, but
- 2:03:49Speaker 1: drew you. I mean you can tell a story about
- 2:03:50Speaker 1: will Bury and that pit bullet came and chased them off. Yeah. Yeah,
- 2:03:57Speaker 1: I mean it's like, yeah, we have dogs run up
- 2:03:59Speaker 1: on it. It's pretty often in a stand. And uh,
- 2:04:02Speaker 1: I think it was four years ago. I was hunting
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: this buck I called Willbury. He's just a an awesome,
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: just slick eight pointer. Um it was I think it
- 2:04:12Speaker 1: was the first or second week at the season, and
- 2:04:14Speaker 1: this year was in there just like every day. He
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: he kicked out all the other bucks in his bachelor
- 2:04:20Speaker 1: group and was he had made like I don't know,
- 2:04:23Speaker 1: five or six scrapes in this little tiny area and
- 2:04:27Speaker 1: he was coming in every day. Lee and I were hunting. Um,
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: I think we had we had like two encounters with
- 2:04:33Speaker 1: him right at dark. Actually shot at him and missed
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: one night, and I was out there again the next day.
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: And uh, he was coming in like he was walking
- 2:04:45Speaker 1: straight under my stand and maybe ten yards away. I
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: was full draw about to uh, just waiting for him
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: to turn broadside, and all of a sudden, the neighbors dogs,
- 2:04:55Speaker 1: a couple of pit bulls came running through the woods
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: and chase them off. And like, I think that's if
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: they're again, like if they're used to stuff like that, Like,
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: if they if that's a natural occurrence, it's going to
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: scare them off for a little bit, but they're going
- 2:05:10Speaker 1: to come back if it's not some sort of like
- 2:05:13Speaker 1: life threatening thing for them. So I think I ended
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: up feeling that deer a couple of evenings later in
- 2:05:17Speaker 1: the same the same general area. So um, it just
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: completely you know, it depends what they associate, um, that
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: presence with. Yeah, that makes sense. That makes sense. Man.
- 2:05:31Speaker 1: So so you're you're going in and getting permission on
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: all these different places that maybe more guys don't tend to.
- 2:05:39Speaker 1: You are scouting them out, You're running a ton of
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: cameras to find where these older, bigger deer are your
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: ZERI and on them once they get daylight active. You're
- 2:05:47Speaker 1: doing little things like putting these mini plots, running mock scrapes, um.
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: Being careful about how you're getting in and out and
- 2:05:54Speaker 1: making sure that you're on that line between safe and
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: not safe for deer, so you can take advantage of
- 2:05:58Speaker 1: your doing all these things. Is there is there anything
- 2:06:01Speaker 1: else that you're doing during the hunting season or otherwise
- 2:06:05Speaker 1: that you think is making you guys uniquely successful that's
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: allowing you to have, you know, buoning Crockett class bucks
- 2:06:11Speaker 1: coming out of the suburbs of Atlanta that we haven't
- 2:06:14Speaker 1: touched on yet. Uh. Something is probably like you know,
- 2:06:22Speaker 1: we we've talked about waiting for the right time to
- 2:06:24Speaker 1: be in the tree, but once it is that right time. Uh.
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: The probably one of the biggest thing for us is
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: just we spend so many hours in a tree sitting there,
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: you know, waiting for it to happen. We can spend
- 2:06:40Speaker 1: more time in a tree. We're blessed in that way
- 2:06:44Speaker 1: than most people. And you know, for example, Bayne last year,
- 2:06:49Speaker 1: over the two years of hunting him, I think we
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: sat like over sixty times UM. And so I don't
- 2:06:55Speaker 1: know how many hours it was that we actually spent
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: in a tree hunting that year. UM. And then you know,
- 2:07:02Speaker 1: for Zeus, I think we sat like times or so times,
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: um and you know, finally finish the story on that here.
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: But it's like, I think the biggest thing is once
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: it's the right time, you got the right set up,
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: everything's right. It's just spending time at a tree and
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: and just as much as you possibly can and not
- 2:07:23Speaker 1: missing that one opportunity that that here presents itself. I
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: think that's something that you know, it's it's yeah, you know,
- 2:07:33Speaker 1: your your first it's gonna be your best set when
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: the time's right, and everything like that. But when October,
- 2:07:39Speaker 1: you know, late October November one around, it's all about
- 2:07:42Speaker 1: being in the tree as much as possible because sometimes
- 2:07:46Speaker 1: you know that that bucket of a lifetime that are
- 2:07:48Speaker 1: that they're here only presents that one chance, and it's
- 2:07:52Speaker 1: not missing that opportunity, um, Drew. I don't know if
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: there's anything else you can think of, but I think
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: that's one of the big things, is that we just
- 2:07:59Speaker 1: get this and so much time on a tree. Yeah,
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: and I mean we've touched on it a little bit,
- 2:08:04Speaker 1: but these books, like, especially during the rut, these bucks
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: travel a ton and one good example is Lee had
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: pictures of the same buck on two different cameras seven
- 2:08:16Speaker 1: miles apart in the same night. Um, and that's crossing
- 2:08:21Speaker 1: like a bunch of heavily traffic roads like four lane roads, um,
- 2:08:29Speaker 1: neighborhood roads and all sorts of stuff. So you know, yeah,
- 2:08:33Speaker 1: you say, your first sit is always your best chance,
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: but I mean there's also a very good chance that
- 2:08:38Speaker 1: that the buck you're hunting is not in that block
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: the woods, you know, those first fifteen times that you sit,
- 2:08:43Speaker 1: So it could take um, you know, a week and
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: a half of sitting there before you catch him on
- 2:08:49Speaker 1: that leg of his of his loop. And you know
- 2:08:53Speaker 1: whether or not, God, I'll just saying whether or not.
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: I mean, he may come through that one time, but
- 2:09:00Speaker 1: he might may not even give you an opportunity that
- 2:09:03Speaker 1: one time. So then you have to wait again for
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: him to do his full circle and come back to again.
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: So we also have like for banes, and the same
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: with you know, the deer that we're hunting this year
- 2:09:13Speaker 1: is like we have three or four different sets of
- 2:09:18Speaker 1: stands that we've hung and a lot of times, you know,
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: we have these covert cellular cameras. So it's like if
- 2:09:24Speaker 1: we wake up, we're playing to hunt in the next
- 2:09:25Speaker 1: morning and we wake up in the morning, it's like,
- 2:09:27Speaker 1: where was he seen last? So when we sit, you know,
- 2:09:31Speaker 1: sixty times in a two year spans these deer sometimes
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: it's it's not necessarily in the exact same spot, in
- 2:09:36Speaker 1: the same stand. It's like we kind of read where
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: his last activity was and kind of you know, if
- 2:09:42Speaker 1: we saw him over at Spot A, we'll go to
- 2:09:45Speaker 1: Spot A. But if the next night, you know, he
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: seems to have moved over Spot B, we'll go over
- 2:09:50Speaker 1: Spot B where we've got our other stands, Hong, So
- 2:09:52Speaker 1: we're constantly kind of adjusting reading where you know, getting
- 2:09:56Speaker 1: kind of real time information is unmatched that that probably
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: something that is, you know, our game changer is getting
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: real time information on deer activity, where he's at, where
- 2:10:10Speaker 1: he was last, seeing things like that, and also not
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: having to go in the woods to check these cameras.
- 2:10:16Speaker 1: You're minimizing your sun but just knowing in real time
- 2:10:20Speaker 1: is you cannot replace that, you cannot beat it. Yeah,
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: you know, on the on the the the opposite side
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: of that, though, do you guys see any kind of
- 2:10:31Speaker 1: like annual patterns emerging? Lots of times you hear guys
- 2:10:34Speaker 1: say that they noticed that this buck seems to show
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: back up in this little area the first week in
- 2:10:39Speaker 1: November every year, first week in October every year, and
- 2:10:42Speaker 1: you can start using the historical data, it seems like
- 2:10:44Speaker 1: with these deer you followed multiple years, that might be
- 2:10:46Speaker 1: the case. Have you all do that? Absolutely? That's that's
- 2:10:51Speaker 1: actually a really good question, because that's something that I
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: wouldn't have, I guess thought of, But I told you, like,
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: sometimes we'll have pictures of these deer for like four
- 2:11:00Speaker 1: or five years before we actually hunt him. So we've
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: we've already built so much history around that deer of
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: where he likes to spend, what time, that we can
- 2:11:08Speaker 1: actually head beer off so vain. Last year we had
- 2:11:13Speaker 1: an early season encounter with him and after that it
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: was like, you know, we were like, he's not coming
- 2:11:20Speaker 1: back here. After that happened, we know where he's going though,
- 2:11:24Speaker 1: it chases Does. So we completely pulled out of that area,
- 2:11:27Speaker 1: relocated and like clockwork, you know, second or third week
- 2:11:31Speaker 1: of October, you know, here he is four miles away
- 2:11:35Speaker 1: chasing Does. And the same with Kendall and that deer
- 2:11:38Speaker 1: that he lost permission at and we told you about
- 2:11:41Speaker 1: that like h year, Uh, he knows where that deer
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: goes in November, late October November, so he's already heading
- 2:11:50Speaker 1: him off. But history and knowing these dear sendencies is
- 2:11:56Speaker 1: also something that's just you know, huge, huge, huge key
- 2:12:03Speaker 1: and a lot of times, like on this year that
- 2:12:05Speaker 1: I'm hunting this season, which I've watched for five or
- 2:12:07Speaker 1: six years, like, I know, I know where he goes,
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: but I'm only I'm still very limited on where I
- 2:12:14Speaker 1: can actually hunt. So I knew that I had a
- 2:12:18Speaker 1: small kind of window of opportunity early season which I
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: wasn't able to capitalize. And now I know that he
- 2:12:25Speaker 1: kind of just roams around throughout the middle of the season,
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: and there's not much I can do about it, um besides,
- 2:12:31Speaker 1: you know, run October camera and hope I can catch them,
- 2:12:35Speaker 1: you know, just stopping by in the middle of the season.
- 2:12:38Speaker 1: But I do know that he shows up at a
- 2:12:39Speaker 1: different spot in January, and when he's there, he's like clockwork.
- 2:12:44Speaker 1: So you know, I may know where that deer is
- 2:12:46Speaker 1: and I may have a bunch of history with them,
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: but that does not necessarily mean that you know, it's
- 2:12:51Speaker 1: a just a um that it's game over, Like I'm
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: gonna have to most likely have to wait until January
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: to uh to have a shot at this year. So
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: that's definitely a huge, huge advantage. Okay, So I've taken
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: a lot of you guys time. We're pushing two hours
- 2:13:08Speaker 1: already coming up on it. Um, I feel like we've
- 2:13:11Speaker 1: only scratched the surface. I know, it's it's crazy how
- 2:13:14Speaker 1: quickly this goes and how much more let's talk about.
- 2:13:16Speaker 1: But I guess I want to leave you guys with
- 2:13:18Speaker 1: one last prediction that I want from each of you.
- 2:13:22Speaker 1: You're each sounds like you're each after a buck. Sounds
- 2:13:25Speaker 1: like Lee's got a two plus. Drew, I'm not sure
- 2:13:28Speaker 1: what kind of deer you'r chase, but I'm sure it's
- 2:13:30Speaker 1: something then that makes my jaw drop. Um, if if
- 2:13:35Speaker 1: you kill these two deer, I'd like you to predict
- 2:13:39Speaker 1: when and how you would expect it to happen. If
- 2:13:42Speaker 1: if you were to look back and say, yeah, I
- 2:13:43Speaker 1: kill that dear, paint me the scenario in which you
- 2:13:46Speaker 1: think that would happen. So, Drew, you just said it
- 2:13:48Speaker 1: will probably happen in January, Um, but but flesh out
- 2:13:51Speaker 1: how you think that if it was gonna happen this
- 2:13:54Speaker 1: would be it. Yeah, So I mean, I guess it's
- 2:14:00Speaker 1: one or two things. Like I said, it's gonna be
- 2:14:02Speaker 1: a crapshoot um late October November. I mean, he the
- 2:14:07Speaker 1: spot that I have permission is between two big blocks
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: of woods that it's impossible to get hunting access to UM.
- 2:14:15Speaker 1: And so he passes through UM my little block woods.
- 2:14:19Speaker 1: It was just probably five acres, but he doesn't necessarily
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: hold up there. So I am. I am feeding in there,
- 2:14:26Speaker 1: and I'm holding a group about of about five or
- 2:14:28Speaker 1: six does And there's a chance that he passes through
- 2:14:31Speaker 1: and locks down on a dough in November in that
- 2:14:34Speaker 1: block of woods. So I'll have cameras out um obviously
- 2:14:38Speaker 1: all year long. And if he does that, if he
- 2:14:41Speaker 1: shows up, I'm gonna get in there and hunt. But
- 2:14:43Speaker 1: that's gonna I mean, that'll be you know, it's not
- 2:14:46Speaker 1: very high odds, so most likely I'll just have to
- 2:14:49Speaker 1: wait it out and hope that he will not get
- 2:14:51Speaker 1: shot or hit by far And I think January, I'm
- 2:14:55Speaker 1: gonna say January twelfth is when he's gonna show up
- 2:14:59Speaker 1: at my my late season spot and he's gonna start
- 2:15:04Speaker 1: coming to Most likely he's gonna start coming to corn
- 2:15:06Speaker 1: since corn is legal now, and it'll take me maybe
- 2:15:10Speaker 1: on the three or four hunts to get them because
- 2:15:13Speaker 1: once I mean once they get on that late season
- 2:15:15Speaker 1: food source, they really don't have a whole lot of
- 2:15:18Speaker 1: other options besides landscaping. So, um, they get pretty predictable
- 2:15:23Speaker 1: that late season. And actually we didn't mention this, but
- 2:15:26Speaker 1: the season in the suburbs has for years has run
- 2:15:31Speaker 1: a month longer than the rest of the state. Um,
- 2:15:35Speaker 1: it's changed now, but for a long time, the rest
- 2:15:37Speaker 1: of Georgia closed at the end of December and the
- 2:15:42Speaker 1: suburbs go all the way through through January. So they
- 2:15:46Speaker 1: kind of I think they kind of let their guard
- 2:15:48Speaker 1: down these last two weeks of the season. So that's
- 2:15:50Speaker 1: my my prediction there on that book. All right, it
- 2:15:53Speaker 1: sounds like a good plan. What about you, Lee, I'm
- 2:15:57Speaker 1: kind of chuckling at myself, But Drew brought up something
- 2:15:59Speaker 1: we I really talked about. But November, our enemy number
- 2:16:03Speaker 1: one is definitely Mom's soccer vands going down the street.
- 2:16:07Speaker 1: That's our biggest competition in some areas, and we've had it,
- 2:16:11Speaker 1: We've had to go down that way for us several times.
- 2:16:13Speaker 1: But um, yeah, so I'm after two year right now.
- 2:16:17Speaker 1: One of them is like, I don't know how big
- 2:16:20Speaker 1: he is. He's giant typical, he's definitely over one seventy.
- 2:16:25Speaker 1: He's the one that I've got like seven cameras out
- 2:16:27Speaker 1: for um. He actually just showed up this morning for
- 2:16:31Speaker 1: the first time in like a while of hunt what
- 2:16:35Speaker 1: I would call huntable hours, like in the morning of
- 2:16:37Speaker 1: the evening when I'd be sitting there instead of this
- 2:16:39Speaker 1: middle of the day I'm in this year's he's still
- 2:16:43Speaker 1: kind of in his summer area. He's actually still with
- 2:16:45Speaker 1: his running buddy once probably the third or fourth week
- 2:16:52Speaker 1: of October. Hit this year travels for miles. He is
- 2:16:55Speaker 1: a complete just he's completely random. I hope it doesn't
- 2:17:00Speaker 1: come down to that point. So what I'm hoping for
- 2:17:03Speaker 1: and what I think is my game plan is is
- 2:17:06Speaker 1: that while he's still in his summer ish area, I'm
- 2:17:11Speaker 1: really utilizing scrapes right now because he's really getting all
- 2:17:15Speaker 1: the pictures I have him. He's got his head up
- 2:17:16Speaker 1: in the scrapes and he's getting really defensive on him.
- 2:17:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna continue to work out against him before his
- 2:17:23Speaker 1: pattern changes and he starts chasing. Does all over the place,
- 2:17:26Speaker 1: because once it happens, it's just you know, it's it's
- 2:17:30Speaker 1: gonna be a complete gamble. I'm hoping there's gonna be
- 2:17:33Speaker 1: a little window beforehand where we get some cooler weather.
- 2:17:36Speaker 1: He hasn't left that area. He's hitting these scrapes, and
- 2:17:39Speaker 1: I think it's gonna go down, um before November, So
- 2:17:43Speaker 1: hopefully like in the next next week, week and a half,
- 2:17:46Speaker 1: I think it can go down with this year for
- 2:17:49Speaker 1: the two year. Um right now, I know that this
- 2:17:53Speaker 1: year is in a certain area, and it's a big area. Uh,
- 2:17:58Speaker 1: I'm keying in on the place, and it put me
- 2:18:00Speaker 1: a really long time to get permission here. And I
- 2:18:02Speaker 1: actually just confirmed permission yesterday. Um, there are funds of
- 2:18:08Speaker 1: those I mean, like like thirty or forty does that
- 2:18:12Speaker 1: are coming through this section I'm in. I'm vetting that
- 2:18:20Speaker 1: when November rolls around, I probably won't see this year
- 2:18:23Speaker 1: until November. But when November rolls around and all these
- 2:18:27Speaker 1: all these does start coming in the heat, I guarantee
- 2:18:29Speaker 1: you that this box is going to show up in
- 2:18:32Speaker 1: this area dog and all these dose so and that's
- 2:18:36Speaker 1: assuming he makes it that long. Because a lot of
- 2:18:38Speaker 1: people there's there's just like fifteen people hunting this year
- 2:18:41Speaker 1: at least, So if he makes it to November, I'm
- 2:18:48Speaker 1: I've got all I need. Just because I'm not seeing
- 2:18:51Speaker 1: him in other bucks right now. I'm completely fine with
- 2:18:54Speaker 1: that because I'm in the perfect area where I know,
- 2:18:57Speaker 1: if I'm a mature buck, this is the place that
- 2:19:00Speaker 1: I would want to be. There's plenty of plenty of
- 2:19:03Speaker 1: poon tank to chase around here. So um. The beauty
- 2:19:08Speaker 1: of this is you can edit that out if you want, right,
- 2:19:13Speaker 1: you can say whatever you want. Um. So I think
- 2:19:18Speaker 1: I think that if it were to go down with
- 2:19:19Speaker 1: that two, it would be in the heat in November. Um,
- 2:19:23Speaker 1: this other typical. I think it's gonna be really hard
- 2:19:27Speaker 1: to kill him in November, and he's gonna be traveling
- 2:19:29Speaker 1: so far. Um, So I think it'd be October when
- 2:19:33Speaker 1: he's hitting scrapes or that late season window when he
- 2:19:36Speaker 1: keeps back and keeps back on the food. So well,
- 2:19:41Speaker 1: those are good predictions, and and hopefully when those predictions
- 2:19:45Speaker 1: come true, we have to get you guys back on
- 2:19:48Speaker 1: maybe one of the radio episodes to describe what was
- 2:19:51Speaker 1: going on and how it all, how it all happened.
- 2:19:53Speaker 1: Hopefully you just describe exactly what you just did. So
- 2:19:57Speaker 1: you who never goes that way, but at least you
- 2:20:00Speaker 1: get a plan in place to go for it. Um Man,
- 2:20:03Speaker 1: this has been really really interesting, really unique. So this
- 2:20:07Speaker 1: is fun for me. And if folks want to follow
- 2:20:10Speaker 1: along with what you've got going on, how your seasons
- 2:20:12Speaker 1: are going, your future videos and all that, where can
- 2:20:15Speaker 1: they find that stuff? Yeah, So all of our videos
- 2:20:19Speaker 1: are posted on Facebook, UM and YouTube, and our facebook
- 2:20:24Speaker 1: is Seek one Productions. It's s e e K O
- 2:20:28Speaker 1: n e UM. They're also aired on Mossy Oaks Facebook
- 2:20:32Speaker 1: page and No Mad's Facebook page. And then to keep
- 2:20:37Speaker 1: kind of keep up with the daily uh of us
- 2:20:40Speaker 1: is Instagram is the best place to go um it
- 2:20:42Speaker 1: seeks and then the number one instead of spelled out
- 2:20:45Speaker 1: skin productions at Quin Productions. So that's what we put
- 2:20:49Speaker 1: post on most um And kind of what we're doing
- 2:20:53Speaker 1: with the videos this year is we've already released one
- 2:20:55Speaker 1: is the Nashville episode, and then from there, I mean,
- 2:20:58Speaker 1: we're producing episodes per kill, so we try to we
- 2:21:02Speaker 1: try to get them out within you know, forty five
- 2:21:05Speaker 1: days or so of the kill. Um So right now,
- 2:21:09Speaker 1: I mean likely said none of us have killed a
- 2:21:11Speaker 1: buck yet, but we've got nothing in the works, but
- 2:21:14Speaker 1: hopefully we start putting some down here soon and you
- 2:21:17Speaker 1: can expect to see some videos you know, shortly after that.
- 2:21:20Speaker 1: So if you want to before we go, uh, kind
- 2:21:25Speaker 1: of bring the correlation to our seek One name, they
- 2:21:28Speaker 1: could just have some me into it and kind of
- 2:21:30Speaker 1: why would have that name? Yeah, we can do that. Um. Yes, again,
- 2:21:35Speaker 1: follow our Instagram kind of. Lee and I are both
- 2:21:40Speaker 1: pretty strong Christians. We went to a Christian high school.
- 2:21:43Speaker 1: And so what kind of what we're trying to do
- 2:21:45Speaker 1: is use this platform to glorify God and to just
- 2:21:48Speaker 1: kind of spread his name um in this season through
- 2:21:52Speaker 1: our Instagram every Sunday, we're kind of doing like a
- 2:21:54Speaker 1: little mini sermon um and just kind of doing a
- 2:21:58Speaker 1: faith walks from beginning in and just trying to make
- 2:22:01Speaker 1: as big as impact as we possibly can um on
- 2:22:03Speaker 1: the hunting community. And the name seek one actually comes
- 2:22:07Speaker 1: from a speaking like one specific buck. You know, we
- 2:22:12Speaker 1: like we've talked about we build this story about around
- 2:22:15Speaker 1: one buck um and then also just seeking you know
- 2:22:17Speaker 1: one God, Jesus Christ. So that's really that's one of
- 2:22:20Speaker 1: our big motivations for doing this. So Um, if you're
- 2:22:24Speaker 1: into that, that's awesome, and we hope you follow us.
- 2:22:27Speaker 1: And if you're not, I just hope that you you
- 2:22:30Speaker 1: guys go on our Instagram and kind of read our
- 2:22:32Speaker 1: post from the last few Sundays and follow along and
- 2:22:35Speaker 1: kind of just ask the hard questions and maybe start
- 2:22:38Speaker 1: that journey. So we get a lot of questions of
- 2:22:41Speaker 1: how we kind of came up with Seek one, so
- 2:22:42Speaker 1: we'd like to try and bring it all around for
- 2:22:45Speaker 1: people to ask. So very cool, very cool. Well, you
- 2:22:49Speaker 1: guys are doing great work. Um, not only you know,
- 2:22:52Speaker 1: you've got a great sounds like you've got a great
- 2:22:54Speaker 1: mission behind what you're doing, but you've got great deer
- 2:22:57Speaker 1: that you're chasing a unique situation. But the quality of
- 2:23:01Speaker 1: the work too is very impressive. I can see that
- 2:23:04Speaker 1: you were inspired by guys like you know, Donnie Vincent
- 2:23:07Speaker 1: and the group the Cruise Sigmanta or Heartland bow Hunter.
- 2:23:10Speaker 1: It seems like you took that and you've you put
- 2:23:12Speaker 1: your own spin on it and really putting out work
- 2:23:14Speaker 1: that's top notch. So to anyone listening, yeah, of course,
- 2:23:19Speaker 1: I think anyone listening. I'm sure you found this interesting
- 2:23:22Speaker 1: and I'm sure you're gonna enjoy those videos, so head
- 2:23:24Speaker 1: on over and check those out. So Lee and Drew,
- 2:23:29Speaker 1: thank you for joining me and uh, good luck this season. Yeah,
- 2:23:33Speaker 1: I actually thanks for having us on and that is
- 2:23:36Speaker 1: a rap. Folks, thanks for joining us, Thanks for tuning in.
- 2:23:39Speaker 1: I hope you enjoyed this one. I will just reiterate
- 2:23:42Speaker 1: a couple of the quick things I mentioned at the top,
- 2:23:44Speaker 1: that being the new season and meat Eater that's on Netflix.
- 2:23:47Speaker 1: Make sure you check that out. Also, with the new company,
- 2:23:51Speaker 1: meat Eater, Inc. You will be finding all of my

- 2:24:10Speaker 1: out there, there's also content from Steve Ronnella. There's content
- 2:24:14Speaker 1: from Ben O'Brien, April Bokey, Pat Durkin, Eduard Garcia, a
- 2:24:18Speaker 1: whole bunch of other people. Um, the team is growing
- 2:24:21Speaker 1: rapidly with some of the best and the brightest folks
- 2:24:24Speaker 1: in the hunting and Fishing World, So I hope you
- 2:24:26Speaker 1: check that out. I hope you enjoy it, and until
