- 3:08Kentucky Power officials say they have helped customers reduce electric
- 3:12bill costs after filing for a large utility increase with
- 3:16the Public Service Commission, Kentucky Powers as it helped customers
- 3:20with energy costs. With energy costs top of mind for
- 3:24many customers, Kentucky Powers outlining several steps taken during January's
- 3:28cold weather to help manage electric bills. There's no doubt
- 3:33the cost of electricity has gone up for our customers,
- 3:36so we've taken planned and proactive steps to help offset
- 3:39the winter bill spikes we see every year, but particularly
- 3:43this year given the prolonged stretch of cold temperatures, said
- 3:46Kentucky Power President and Chief operating Officer Cindy Wiseman. Our
- 3:52responsibilities to plan ahead, operate reliably, and take practical steps
- 3:57like these to help our customers manage cost and make
- 4:00electricity more affordable, which we are committed to doing. Here.
- 4:04The steps Kentucky Power has taken ensured generating plants were
- 4:08available to operate when they were needed, most helping reduce
- 4:12the need to purchase higher power, higher priced electricity for
- 4:15the market. Plan in advance of the cold weather by
- 4:19edging natural gas used at our generating plant, protecting customers
- 4:24from price volatility and resulting in approximately four point eight
- 4:27million dollars in fuel cost savings. Requested the Public Service
- 4:33Commission to allow us to defer five million dollars in
- 4:36fuel costs to help manage customer bill impacts. Worked with
- 4:41regulators to modify its fuel Adjustment claus settlement so that
- 4:45fuel related credits can be returned during winter months, helping
- 4:49offset seasonal bills when energy use is typically higher. In
- 4:54addition to managing energy supply costs, Kentucky Power continues encouraging
- 4:58customers to use p programs designed to help avoid bill
- 5:01spikes caused by extreme weather. The average monthly payment amp
- 5:07program spreads energy costs more evenly throughout the year. Helping
- 5:11customers avoid seasonal bill swings. Customers currently using traditional budget
- 5:17billing may benefit from switching to AMP, which can help
- 5:21avoid larger annual settle up balances and provide greater months
- 5:25a month stability. Customers with electric heat are encouraged to
- 5:30apply for the Energy Advantage for Home program, which provides incentives,
- 5:35tools and resources that help customers improve energy efficiency in
- 5:39manage usage during periods of higher demand. Bill education resources
- 5:45and flexible payment options are available through their website, by
- 5:49calling Customer Service at eight hundred five seven to two
- 5:53one one one three, or by sending them a message
- 5:56through Facebook. Customers are encouraged to call or send a
- 5:59direct message so we can help them better understand and

- 9:27and once at the end of this recording before giving
- 9:30the answer. Stay tuned until the end to see if
- 9:32you got it right. Guess who I Am? A political
- 9:37figure born in Slovenia on April twenty sixth, nineteen seventy.
- 9:41I studied architecture in college, but I ended up with
- 9:45a career in modeling. In twenty sixteen, I became a
- 9:48household name when my husband was elected president. Who am I?
- 9:55Is there silver in those hills? By Bob Deaton? My
- 10:00daughter was about ten years old, I told her about
- 10:02the legendary John Swift silver mines that were supposedly located
- 10:06somewhere in eastern Kentucky. Many thought they were located in
- 10:10the Red River Gorge and Powell or Wolf County. The
- 10:14creek that runs through the gorge is named Swift Creek.
- 10:17The Wolf County Courthouse now stands where Swift allegedly camped.
- 10:21Campton is the county seat of Wolf County and is
- 10:24so named because of this alleged camp site. The idea
- 10:28of searching and finding gold or silver has always had
- 10:30a strange effect on man. History is shown how the
- 10:34gold and silver strikes in California, Colorado, and Alaska accelerated
- 10:38the settlement of our country. My daughter became immediately afflicted
- 10:42with the silver fever. She insisted we must go and
- 10:46search for these hidden treasures. The next weekend, my daughter,
- 10:49her mother, and I journeyed to the Red River Gorge
- 10:52in Wolf County. We rambled up and down Swift Creek,
- 10:55located Rockbridge and a large turtlebacked rock that was mentioned
- 10:59in one of his alleged journals. We did not find
- 11:02any silver, but the excitement and sense of history generated
- 11:05by the search will forever be a part of our
- 11:08experience as a family. It has been alleged since seventeen
- 11:12sixty one that John Swift, an Englishman, and his associates
- 11:16in Virginia, roamed over the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky.
- 11:20Swift is alleged to have opened and worked in silver
- 11:23mines in this area. Legend has it that Swift was
- 11:27driven from his silver mines by the approach of hostile Indians.
- 11:30Is also alleged that Swift kept a journal that described
- 11:33his journey of seventeen sixty one, began in Alexandria, Virginia.
- 11:38He supposedly made three other trips in seventeen sixty two,
- 11:41seventeen sixty four, and seventeen sixty seven to sixty nine
- 11:46due to approaching Indians. His journal stated that he buried
- 11:49twenty two thousand and thirty thousand dollars worth of silver
- 11:53in a large creek running south close to the spot.
- 11:56He marked the names Swift, Jefferson, Mundy, and others on
- 12:00a beach treaty. During the pre Revolutionary War period, Swift
- 12:05allegedly returned to England and was imprisoned for his vocal
- 12:09opposition to the government. During his prison term, he became blind. Later,
- 12:15he was released and attempted to return to Kentucky and
- 12:18once again resume his mining. He hired a guide, but
- 12:21they were unable to locate his mines or his stashed silver.
- 12:26On his death bed, he admonished his friends to never
- 12:29give up the search, because there was enough silver to
- 12:32make them all wealthy. There have been many who have
- 12:35searched these mines in eastern Kentucky over the past two
- 12:39hundred and fifty years. Even today, the search continues by some.
- 12:44A lady by the name of Simmons moved to the
- 12:46Red River Gorge and spent most of her adult life
- 12:49searching for this alleged silver mine. There have been many others.
- 12:53One of the first settlers in Carter County found near
- 12:56his cabin a large quantity of ashes of an unusual
- 13:00color and weight. He had these tested by an expert.
- 13:04These ashes produced a considerable amount of silver that was
- 13:07converted into spoons. Those spoons allegedly still exist. In recent years,
- 13:13a searcher in the Red River Gorge found tools in
- 13:15a pit and had them tested and then dated over
- 13:18two hundred years old and would have been the kind
- 13:21used at that time. Recently, my wife was in a
- 13:24local restaurant here in Jackson and over her two men
- 13:27discussing the Swift Swift silver mines they had in their
- 13:31possession an old map yellowed with age, that they believed
- 13:35indicated these mines were located in Lecher County. They were
- 13:38en route to search for these mines. About the year
- 13:42eighteen ninety, a man by the name of Naylor appeared
- 13:45at the head of Buzzard Fork of Canoe Creek, where
- 13:48a large turtle back rock that was mentioned in his
- 13:50journal was situated on the summit of a high mountain.
- 13:54He dug a deep pit at the base of this
- 13:56large rock. He refused to disclothes to anyone as to
- 13:59work what his purpose was. He would appear occasionally at
- 14:02the door of my maternal great grandfather's house and ask
- 14:05to draw water from his well. He suddenly disappeared, leaving
- 14:09this large pit that can be seen today. Many from
- 14:12the Middle Fork area visit what is known as Naylor's Rock.
- 14:16It's believed by some that he was searching for the
- 14:18Swift Silver mine. Perhaps he found some of the stashed
- 14:21silver and left. Are those mines only a legend handed
- 14:25down through succeeding generations, or do they exist? As long
- 14:29as time exists and man dreams of instant riches, there
- 14:32will be those who will continue to search over the
- 14:34hills and valleys of eastern Kentucky for the possibility of
- 14:38finding these vast ridges. Life on the Old Dirt Road
- 14:43by Bobby Thorpe, Memories of My Childhood. I was recently
- 14:48sitting on the front porch swing and brainstorming on memories
- 14:52I have of yesteryear. The following are some of the
- 14:55things that came to mind. Skipping rocks, climbing the hills
- 14:59from baloney sandwiches, sixteen ounce glass bottle Pepsi, sleeping with
- 15:04the front door unlocked, playing in the dirt, drinking from
- 15:07the well bucket. Holiday dinner with the family. Everyone was there.
- 15:12Box commodity, cheese and butter, Whittlers sitting on Main Street,
- 15:16Whittling on Saturday mornings. Suwel Richie and the guys trading
- 15:20knives in town. The dime Store, quarter Stampers, watch repair shop,
- 15:25A Wisburger, Callahan Hardware, the County School Parade, marching through town,
- 15:32school paddlings, fresh fish fry on Labor Day weekend at
- 15:36Citizens Bank. Coal trucks coming down South Fork on the
- 15:39dusty dirt Road. Daddy's left over Little Debbie pies in
- 15:43his lunch pail, the little bottles of water with the
- 15:46foil tops. These are memories that stand out from my
- 15:49childhood and growing up on the old dirt road. So

- 16:07the good old days of front porch fellowships and kitchen
- 16:09table talks. A lot of newer homes don't even have
- 16:12big front porches, just entryways. It is sad that we
- 16:16are too busy to enjoy those simple pleasures from days past.
- 16:21The Bible has numerous scriptures that bring us comfort that

- 18:23No matter what is going on in your life, just

- 18:53Desk by Randy Cloth. Power words power thoughts. How what
- 18:58we think shapes how we live. Our thoughts and the
- 19:02words used to express them are vital to our mental
- 19:04health and overall well being. Our thoughts involve words. Can
- 19:09you have thoughts without words? Some may think of things
- 19:12as a series of pictures, but even those soon develop
- 19:15into words. Try to think about something without using words
- 19:19pretty much impossible. These words are especially important. Consistent negative
- 19:24thoughts lead to unpleasant emotions. Positive, healthy thoughts lead to
- 19:28pleasant emotions. God told Joshua and Joshua one nine to
- 19:32be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid.
- 19:36This is a great verse concerning any challenges that we
- 19:38may face. How about Hebrews eleven one, which states, now
- 19:43faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence
- 19:46of things not seen. An overall statement about the power
- 19:52of our thoughts. Acts sixteen thirty one says, believe on
- 19:56the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved. The
- 19:59importance of believing is mentioned hundreds of times in the
- 20:03New Testament, so important concerning forgiveness and salvation. Other power
- 20:08words thoughts not found in the Bible include the serenity prayer,
- 20:12which can be a great way to keep things in perspective.
- 20:15God grant me the serenity to accept the things I
- 20:18cannot change, the courage to change the things I can,
- 20:22and the wisdom to know the difference. Other power thoughts
- 20:25for daily living. Number one, I can take the next
- 20:29right step. Number two. My thoughts shape my emotions, and
- 20:33I choose my thoughts. Number three, I can be strong
- 20:37and courageous even when I feel afraid. Number four, what
- 20:41I believe matters. Number five. I will focus on what
- 20:46I can control and release what I cannot. Number six.
- 20:50Difficult seasons do not define my future. Memorize these or
- 20:55write them down, think about the morning and evening and
- 20:58at other times for several days or longer if needed.

- 21:52it was a feast fit for a king. So much
- 21:54food one did not know where to begin. It was
- 21:57a potluck setting, and our members didn't let us stand.
- 22:00You name it, and we were able to serve it up.
- 22:03When one went through the line. We all had a
- 22:04hard choice deciding what we wanted. Do we want this
- 22:07or that? Oh? What's over there? Maybe I'll take some
- 22:10of this and a lot of that. Oh, so many choices.
- 22:14It all looked so good and believed me it was.
- 22:17You're probably wondering why it took so long to write
- 22:19about our Thanksgiving dinner. Well, to tell the truth, my
- 22:22Brenda was having a rough time at it in and
- 22:24out of the hospital. I cannot count the times we
- 22:28were all hoping that soon she would be so much better,
- 22:30but it was not to be. Well. Back to our potluck.
- 22:34We are so grateful to all who brought food and
