- 0:17Speaker 1: Turner Glory Podcast. We're back, gentlemen. We are two weeks,
- 0:22Speaker 1: less than two weeks away from opening kick against the
- 0:26Speaker 1: UTAP Minors Week zero. We were just talking was already
- 0:30Speaker 1: coming up this Saturday. I probably say this every year,
- 0:34Speaker 1: but man, time flies. It feels like schools starting already. Well,
- 0:38Speaker 1: it is starting already.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Some people have been here for weeks.
- 0:45Speaker 3: It is here.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Usually, as I say, it felt a little bit of
- 0:48Speaker 2: a switch up this year because we had that week
- 0:50Speaker 2: of fall weather like two weeks ago, where it was
- 0:52Speaker 2: like seventy every day and sunny, and the kind of
- 0:55Speaker 2: threw me off. My internal clock was thrown off.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Usually, I feel like August takes foreveragers because I'm waiting
- 1:01Speaker 4: for football start.
- 1:02Speaker 3: But it's flying this year.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it just doesn't feel like we're already here. It's
- 1:08Speaker 1: not like we're waiting for it to come anymore. I
- 1:10Speaker 1: mean it's here. We are deep into the thick of
- 1:12Speaker 1: fall camp, hearing storylines, news. We're at the point now
- 1:17Speaker 1: that I think media is trying to look for different
- 1:21Speaker 1: things to talk about and and push things here and there.
- 1:25Speaker 1: The big thing this week that came out that I
- 1:28Speaker 1: thought was very neat. They got some national attention to
- 1:31Speaker 1: was Coach Rule's little minute clip on why we lose
- 1:35Speaker 1: close games. So I not sure if you guys heard
- 1:38Speaker 1: that or watched it, but I have one headshake, No, Austin.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I don't chasing three duck yet.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it came out of that and yeah
- 1:49Speaker 1: I did see that, Yeah it was. I thought it
- 1:52Speaker 1: was very good. I mean, just once again a statement
- 1:55Speaker 1: to Rule, how good of a speaker, and you can
- 1:58Speaker 1: see why he's turned for games around just from a
- 2:01Speaker 1: little clip there. Basically, I think the background of what happened.
- 2:05Speaker 1: It was during that scrimmage that was in front of
- 2:08Speaker 1: all the fans. Apparently some you know, drive didn't go well.
- 2:12Speaker 1: He benched seniors, Apparently a fight broke out at some
- 2:14Speaker 1: point too on the sideline in front of people, and
- 2:18Speaker 1: basically he just said, this is why we lose games
- 2:21Speaker 1: because when the lights come on, we don't perform. And
- 2:26Speaker 1: I don't think that's an incorrect statement. I think we
- 2:28Speaker 1: can pinpoint a billion reasons why we've lost close games.
- 2:31Speaker 1: But bottom line, it does feel like when the lights
- 2:35Speaker 1: come on, that's when things don't go well. And it
- 2:39Speaker 1: sounds like maybe practices it doesn't happen like that all
- 2:41Speaker 1: the time, but we can't do it in front of people.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Was he pissed off during this or.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Don't watch it now, Dak, but watch it later. It's
- 2:51Speaker 1: a good minute clip.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I did not see that. I can't believe
- 3:00Speaker 3: I didn't because it made that I don't.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Yeah, X and.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Facebook sort of thing.
- 3:11Speaker 1: That the big takeaway that I think from watching it
- 3:16Speaker 1: and then just thinking back to all of our one
- 3:19Speaker 1: score losses and how we hope they don't continue again,
- 3:23Speaker 1: but give us a reason they shouldn't. It just makes
- 3:27Speaker 1: me think and one of my overarching reasons is the
- 3:30Speaker 1: pressure in the expectations that our fans and media and
- 3:35Speaker 1: including us puts on our players. And I think that's
- 3:40Speaker 1: an overarching proplem. I call it a problem, but there's
- 3:43Speaker 1: not a whole lot you do about it. You don't
- 3:44Speaker 1: change it, right, you don't. You don't say Husker fan
- 3:46Speaker 1: should stop caring. But at the same time I do
- 3:50Speaker 1: think that it does. It does put a higher amount
- 3:54Speaker 1: of effort and focus into these players to perform in
- 4:00Speaker 1: front of ninety eighty five ninety thousand every week and
- 4:03Speaker 1: then get talked about by fifteen different podcasts and two
- 4:08Speaker 1: different national or local papers that get read by everybody,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and it's it's a lot. I my thought around this was,
- 4:19Speaker 1: if we take this exact, same team, exact same coaches,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and we go put us at Illinois, or go put
- 4:24Speaker 1: us at Indiana, or go put us at Purdue, go
- 4:26Speaker 1: put us at Northwestern, I think I think this team
- 4:30Speaker 1: performs really really well. Like would you disagree with that?
- 4:33Speaker 1: Give us the same schedule? I think. I think over
- 4:36Speaker 1: the past four or five years, I think it changes
- 4:39Speaker 1: a lot.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I don't know if I agree with that or not
- 4:48Speaker 2: to say yeah, to say that we're messing up because
- 4:51Speaker 2: of the pressure fans. But I think every school has
- 4:55Speaker 2: a certain level of pressure.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I agree that, like Nebraska, Name another school to ask
- 5:00Speaker 1: pressure like Nebraska, I could.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Name, I mean, Notre Dame.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Georgia, name me any other school. You guys are not
- 5:13Speaker 1: on our level of schools right.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Now, you didn't ask that.
- 5:19Speaker 1: That is exactly what I'm saying, is for the level
- 5:22Speaker 1: that we are at, why can we not pull out
- 5:25Speaker 1: close wins?
- 5:29Speaker 2: I don't know if I'm I'm getting well confused. I
- 5:32Speaker 2: think it's I think I think it's been bad coaching,
- 5:35Speaker 2: and I think it's been.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You know, you don't think, you don't think, you don't
- 5:41Speaker 1: think we put any added pressure on our players and
- 5:43Speaker 1: that effects is the way they play.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Well.
- 5:46Speaker 4: There's definitely there's definitely a lot of pressure, and the
- 5:49Speaker 4: talents probably not good enough to meet up with the
- 5:51Speaker 4: expectations yet.
- 5:53Speaker 2: But any program, I mean, if your argument.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Is just I agree, I agree any program. I'm saying
- 5:59Speaker 1: the level love extent. I'm saying every program has Northwestern
- 6:03Speaker 1: has zero pressure from their fans and media, zero zero.
- 6:07Speaker 2: What fans but to help them play better?
- 6:12Speaker 1: I think it could. I think that. I mean, it's
- 6:16Speaker 1: a common thing in sports, right when you have nothing
- 6:18Speaker 1: to lose, teams play what better. I mean, that's that's
- 6:20Speaker 1: a that's a known fact that teams that come out
- 6:23Speaker 1: and have nothing to lose and say all hell of it,
- 6:25Speaker 1: Like there's there's teams that perform better when there's added
- 6:28Speaker 1: pressure on the line in general in sports unless you
- 6:31Speaker 1: have a clutch player, teams whatever, which we probably don't
- 6:35Speaker 1: have or haven't had. That's what I'm saying. I think
- 6:38Speaker 1: that we add an extra element to it. And that's
- 6:41Speaker 1: what we're saying. Like Rule's not blaming the fans, he's
- 6:45Speaker 1: not and he shouldn't neither am I I'm not saying
- 6:48Speaker 1: we should change where we're at. I'm just saying that
- 6:50Speaker 1: next level of eyes and every Saturday when you walk
- 6:55Speaker 1: out it is it's different than going and playing if
- 6:58Speaker 1: you're in Indiana football player, It's very different. That's why
- 7:01Speaker 1: that's why players come to Nebraska. Partially, it's because of
- 7:04Speaker 1: the coverage they get. It's different than if you're at
- 7:06Speaker 1: Illinois and you go play a home game.
- 7:08Speaker 3: It's not you don't.
- 7:09Speaker 1: You don't get interviewed by media after a Tuesday practice.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Anywhere in Nebraska. You do.
- 7:18Speaker 4: And you gotta think when you go to these stadiums
- 7:20Speaker 4: like let's say Northwestern, I mean these players come out,
- 7:24Speaker 4: they come on there and bringing more of that stadium,
- 7:26Speaker 4: seventy thirty US fans, You're gonna get their best shot, right.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I mean yeah. I mean that's the other side of
- 7:33Speaker 1: it is going on the road rules that That was
- 7:37Speaker 1: my takeaway from this whole speech was rule is basically
- 7:39Speaker 1: saying that we need to perform better under pressure. Under
- 7:43Speaker 1: under and pressure could be from the situation, from I
- 7:47Speaker 1: think are added elements of fans. It could be from
- 7:48Speaker 1: what the other team has been doing. But under the lights.
- 7:51Speaker 1: When the spotlight's on you, what are we doing? He's saying,
- 7:53Speaker 1: in practice, we don't do this, But once people start watching,
- 7:57Speaker 1: here we go again. And I would say that Mike
- 8:00Speaker 1: Riley's probably said a lot of that, and Scott Frost
- 8:03Speaker 1: maybe said a lot of that too, especially with the
- 8:05Speaker 1: one one score losses. And yeah, we can go blame
- 8:08Speaker 1: it on the coaching and like we've done, but overall,
- 8:12Speaker 1: you just have a spotlight on you all the time,
- 8:15Speaker 1: and you have to perform, and we have to find
- 8:17Speaker 1: the guys that can perform on the field.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Fair enough. Yeah, I mean you're probably right there be
- 8:24Speaker 2: a little bit, but I don't think it's as big
- 8:27Speaker 2: of an impact, probably as much as you do.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean there's there's a lot of reasons.
- 8:33Speaker 3: A billion.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I think there's a I'm kind of with you. I
- 8:37Speaker 3: think there's a lot of pressure here.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It's more, it's more, it's more. I mean, you mentioned
- 8:44Speaker 1: some of the other schools, but yeah, they're also winning
- 8:47Speaker 1: ten games a year. I mean, and and I don't
- 8:51Speaker 1: think I'm wrong by saying this. At any other school
- 8:55Speaker 1: not making a bowl game for six years, the stadium
- 8:57Speaker 1: would be three fours less than that fool. Yeah, anywhere
- 9:02Speaker 1: else in the country, they're not still there.
- 9:07Speaker 3: It's it's damn wear impossible and not make a bowl
- 9:09Speaker 3: game anymore.
- 9:10Speaker 1: So okay, offensive preview, that's what we're doing today, going
- 9:17Speaker 1: through our projected depth chart. A lot of this. I
- 9:21Speaker 1: will say this depth chart was not created by us.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It was produced by our behind the scenes analysts. And
- 9:28Speaker 1: we are going to start use that as our discussion
- 9:32Speaker 1: point and then we will just go from there. And
- 9:37Speaker 1: this is based on what we've heard. Right, we have
- 9:40Speaker 1: not pinant practice. We don't know where everybody's thinking, but
- 9:43Speaker 1: as of August eighteenth, this is where our heads are at.
- 9:51Speaker 2: So before we go, if you had to guess how
- 9:55Speaker 2: many points per game we scored last year, number.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Being seventeen, I was gonna say twenty seventeen.
- 10:05Speaker 3: And a half, pretty close to that boom.
- 10:08Speaker 1: So I'm gonna share my screen and we can start
- 10:11Speaker 1: with the quarterbacks here too, good on my Okay, get
- 10:22Speaker 1: out of there. The quarterback rooms were well start, but
- 10:28Speaker 1: I did want to start high level Austin with what
- 10:30Speaker 1: you started. So our offense last year, we can all agree,
- 10:35Speaker 1: was not very good. It was bad, and I actually
- 10:39Speaker 1: heard this and I really liked it. I think because
- 10:43Speaker 1: Iowa's offense was so bad on a national level that
- 10:48Speaker 1: actually our offense got overlooked of how bad it was
- 10:53Speaker 1: at times, because all people wanted to talk about was
- 10:56Speaker 1: how bad Iowa was, but our offense was I would say,
- 10:59Speaker 1: a little better than them, but it wasn't much. The
- 11:01Speaker 1: turnovers were the overarching factor as to why we probably
- 11:07Speaker 1: couldn't put the ball in the end zone as much
- 11:09Speaker 1: as we wanted to, and a lot of that came
- 11:12Speaker 1: from fumbles, but we had some interceptions as well. Sadurfield
- 11:16Speaker 1: returned to Zocie, but we bring in Glenn Thomas to
- 11:19Speaker 1: help their Glenn Thomas takes over the quarterback position. We
- 11:26Speaker 1: expect to run a lot of the same style from
- 11:28Speaker 1: what we know. There may be some new looks, but
- 11:32Speaker 1: the same type of formations. However, I think we can
- 11:37Speaker 1: all expect that the run to pass ratio may flip
- 11:41Speaker 1: the other way to some extent. We don't know how much,
- 11:45Speaker 1: but we do think with Dylan Rayola coming in that
- 11:50Speaker 1: that may change. So over arching thoughts to start before
- 11:55Speaker 1: we dive into positions.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Overarching. I would probably agree because last year we passed
- 12:01Speaker 2: it two hundred and sixty one times versus almost five
- 12:05Speaker 2: hundred times we rushed it. We're probably gonna throw a
- 12:07Speaker 2: little more than that this year.
- 12:09Speaker 3: I mean, that just couldn't be good throat.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Yeah, our quarterback is probably not going to lead the
- 12:16Speaker 2: team in rushing. Also probably gonna be true. I do
- 12:21Speaker 2: like the higher of glod Thomas. I think it's good
- 12:22Speaker 2: to have. He is the co oc I mean he's
- 12:25Speaker 2: not even just the QB coach. He's a cute and
- 12:27Speaker 2: so we had some weak question Marcus Satterfield a little
- 12:30Speaker 2: bit last year. It's just some play design and played
- 12:35Speaker 2: choices that he was running, and so I think it's
- 12:39Speaker 2: good to have another body in there that's kind of
- 12:41Speaker 2: adding to that offense.
- 12:45Speaker 4: It can't be worse, it seems leave the team in
- 12:48Speaker 4: fumbles and picks.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I'm sure we fumbled it thirty one times last year.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Holy shit, I didn't know that from what.
- 12:59Speaker 1: We were by far wasn't even close leading in fumbles,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and I think we were top like twelve maybe in interceptions,
- 13:07Speaker 1: I mean overall and turnover level. We were number one
- 13:09Speaker 1: in the country on a just plus minus turnover We
- 13:14Speaker 1: were number one in the country because we don't get
- 13:15Speaker 1: many takeaways, at least we didn't last year. So yeah,
- 13:19Speaker 1: it just isn't good. And I think if you take
- 13:21Speaker 1: the turnovers out of it, things may have looked a
- 13:24Speaker 1: little better. But we just didn't ever feel like we
- 13:29Speaker 1: had an offense that could go down and score when
- 13:32Speaker 1: we needed.
- 13:32Speaker 2: To, because we felt we were going to drop the
- 13:34Speaker 2: ball every time we needed to score correct thirty times
- 13:39Speaker 2: and however interceptions it was, it's pretty bleak.
- 13:42Speaker 3: You average two and a half fumbles a game.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Pretty much good good map deck, appreciate it right there.
- 13:52Speaker 1: So all right, we're gonna go position by position. I
- 13:54Speaker 1: wanted to start with the offensive line because, as we've
- 13:56Speaker 1: talked about before, that is the most important, but we're
- 13:59Speaker 1: gonna go top down here, start at the QB position.
- 14:02Speaker 1: We expect we don't know for sure that Dylan Royola
- 14:05Speaker 1: will be the starting quarterback six and thirty pounds freshman
- 14:10Speaker 1: from Georgia. Heinerk Karberg has looked better. We've talked about
- 14:15Speaker 1: Jalen Grahamstead a little bit, how he's looked good coming
- 14:18Speaker 1: off the quarterback of the year at the FCS level,
- 14:21Speaker 1: and then Danny Kalin also there. I don't know exactly
- 14:26Speaker 1: where the backup is gonna fall. I'm I'm guessing it's
- 14:28Speaker 1: probably still Heinrich, but that to me depends on if
- 14:31Speaker 1: they move Heinrich around and play him anywhere else. I
- 14:34Speaker 1: think that's a possibility, and if they do, that might
- 14:37Speaker 1: mean that one of these other guys, probably Grahamstead, has
- 14:41Speaker 1: looked well and we trust him at that backup position.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Here's my overall thought on the depth. I think it's solid.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I don't think it's great. What scary is the injuries
- 14:55Speaker 1: that could happen to Dylan and do we have have
- 15:00Speaker 1: enough improvement Speaking back to the turnovers that we can
- 15:03Speaker 1: be comfortable saying you can manage an offense Heinrich, Grahamstead,
- 15:07Speaker 1: Danny Kaitlin. Can you manage an offense not turn the
- 15:09Speaker 1: ball over? Our plays are going to change dramatically, I
- 15:12Speaker 1: think without Ryle at quarterback. But that's the question here.
- 15:17Speaker 1: If roy Ola stays healthy, knock on Wood, I think
- 15:21Speaker 1: we're going to be okay.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I would probably agree, I think I don't know if
- 15:27Speaker 2: any of us disagree. Real I'd say probably most people
- 15:30Speaker 2: would agree. Reel is going to be the starting quarterback.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I think rules said he's expected to announce it this
- 15:34Speaker 2: week at some point. Probably a QB one is at
- 15:36Speaker 2: this point. But with Heinrich, I think Heinrichs are too,
- 15:43Speaker 2: and I think he sets a decent floor. You know,
- 15:45Speaker 2: he had his turnovers last year. He wasn't a Jeff Simms,
- 15:48Speaker 2: but he had his turnovers. But he'd expects some improvement
- 15:50Speaker 2: from last year to this year. Within the same offense.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You have a quarterback specific head coach. I think the
- 15:56Speaker 2: floor it's raised a little bit with Heinrich as your backup.
- 16:00Speaker 2: So I'm not I'm not as weird as it was
- 16:02Speaker 2: last year when you know our when Simmons went out there,
- 16:08Speaker 2: then Hydrick got hurt and it's like, well, I guess
- 16:10Speaker 2: we're gonna do pretty, and then Perry went out there
- 16:12Speaker 2: and it was last year was a mess. I feel
- 16:14Speaker 2: a lot better this year than I do last year.
- 16:17Speaker 3: You played your whole QB room last year.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Yeah, we did every one of them through an interception.
- 16:25Speaker 4: First off, I didn't I didn't know Uhl was two
- 16:27Speaker 4: hundred thirty pounds.
- 16:29Speaker 3: He's a thick boy, he's the he's the heaviest quarterback
- 16:32Speaker 3: he got. Damn. I did not know that. So I'll
- 16:35Speaker 3: be able to take some hits then and he should.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Ah, you would think he should be able to last
- 16:42Speaker 4: from like the major head injury stuff like that, if
- 16:45Speaker 4: he's that big.
- 16:46Speaker 3: I don't know. But do you guys think Danny Kalen
- 16:49Speaker 3: is gonna red shirt? Dam Yes, I.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Would guess so.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, that's.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Although Rule did have a lot of nice things to
- 16:58Speaker 2: say about Kalen this week. I don't know what that means.
- 17:02Speaker 2: If that's just a don't leave us yet, don't transfer,
- 17:06Speaker 2: don't transfer because you're not going to start. We're gonna know.
- 17:09Speaker 2: You're not gonna be on the rosk. You're not going
- 17:11Speaker 2: to be on the list.
- 17:12Speaker 3: If Ryola comes back next year, he's playing here. I
- 17:15Speaker 3: bet you Kalen's gone.
- 17:18Speaker 1: I don't know. Nebraska boy, I don't know.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Yeah, he's place like Harvard.
- 17:23Speaker 2: You didn't have to come, he did. He chose to
- 17:25Speaker 2: come knowing exactly who's going to back up.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So my concern another concerned injuries. I think that's one
- 17:35Speaker 1: thing you have to consider when you're building out a
- 17:37Speaker 1: depth chart and looking at how deep you are. Here's
- 17:40Speaker 1: I said this before with Dylan Royola. I think everybody's
- 17:44Speaker 1: expectations of him and as they probably should be from
- 17:46Speaker 1: what we've seen so far, are like off the charts, right.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Everybody is expecting him to do a lot of really
- 17:53Speaker 1: good things and quote unquote save Nebraska football. As we've
- 17:58Speaker 1: named about five different saviors here in the line twenty years.
- 18:01Speaker 1: But he's the one that's supposed to come in and
- 18:04Speaker 1: be the guy NFL type talent. Obviously a five star
- 18:08Speaker 1: coming first five star quarterback we've gotten. I think that
- 18:13Speaker 1: is okay to think that, but just be patient with
- 18:18Speaker 1: it and don't freak out if things don't go well.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I I can totally see the first few games it
- 18:26Speaker 1: just being a little bit of fast paced. Uh, just
- 18:30Speaker 1: it's different playing at the D one level. I hope
- 18:32Speaker 1: he's got that dog in him that it doesn't affect
- 18:35Speaker 1: him as much. But it's a good schedule to start.
- 18:37Speaker 1: But don't be surprised if there's some misthrows, some sacks.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it should be treated as a rookie quarterback, you know,
- 18:45Speaker 2: And he's not.
- 18:47Speaker 1: He's not Danny Caitlin, right, a freshman, and I don't
- 18:50Speaker 1: I still think he's above the level of where even
- 18:53Speaker 1: someone like Adrian Martinez was his freshman year because we
- 18:56Speaker 1: didn't know what was gonna happen with Adrian he started,
- 18:58Speaker 1: Adrian came out and looked good. Was not that level
- 19:00Speaker 1: of expectation on Adrian when he came out and started
- 19:03Speaker 1: his freshman year. Dylan Ryola has a lot of that.
- 19:06Speaker 1: So it kind of goes back to the overall pressure
- 19:09Speaker 1: and expectation thing on him. I don't know what he
- 19:12Speaker 1: thinks or what his thoughts are, but I think everybody's
- 19:15Speaker 1: really high on him. Just be patient with it. It's
- 19:19Speaker 1: going to take some time. It's not going to be
- 19:20Speaker 1: worse than last year. I don't think that.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Sure we completed past yes for sixty yards of pass
- 19:28Speaker 2: like that's bad.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Now you're throwing a lot of screens, dude, Like you
- 19:32Speaker 3: weren't throwing hard passes.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Correct and then only completed.
- 19:37Speaker 1: The frustration could come is with the play calling, depending
- 19:41Speaker 1: on how Ryola looks here the first few games. I mean,
- 19:45Speaker 1: if he if he looks good and we keep throwing it,
- 19:47Speaker 1: then great. But if there's a couple of struggles, I
- 19:50Speaker 1: can see fans just start grumbling and wanted to go
- 19:52Speaker 1: back to run the ball, and that might be me too.
- 19:55Speaker 1: We'll have to see how he looks here the first
- 19:58Speaker 1: few games. But do expect him to have the ball
- 20:01Speaker 1: in his hands a lot.
- 20:04Speaker 4: I mean you're probably gonna air it out a lot
- 20:05Speaker 4: that first game just to see what you got.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I would guess. So, all right, moving on two running backs. E. J. Barthel,
- 20:16Speaker 1: the running backs coach. We got four guys here that
- 20:19Speaker 1: I think could play some minutes for us, maybe even five.
- 20:24Speaker 2: But four guys who could start.
- 20:27Speaker 1: It's it's a I'm gonna call it deep, but I'm
- 20:30Speaker 1: gonna put an asterisk next to that. We have guys
- 20:33Speaker 1: that I all think are very solid. When you talk
- 20:36Speaker 1: about depth, I think you have to be careful on
- 20:39Speaker 1: what depth really is. Are these guys? Is it true
- 20:42Speaker 1: that we have a lot of guys that could play, Yes,
- 20:44Speaker 1: but I don't think any of them are superstar. I
- 20:46Speaker 1: think they're all solid, good at what they do. Uh.
- 20:49Speaker 1: The guys that win this room are gonna be the
- 20:51Speaker 1: ones to hang on to the ball. I think that's
- 20:53Speaker 1: pretty well known. Don't turn it over, don't fumble. I
- 20:56Speaker 1: think these guys are very interchangeable. They all Emma Johnson
- 20:59Speaker 1: and might be a little more of the shiftier back
- 21:01Speaker 1: gave Urban Dante Doll a little more power back. Maybe
- 21:04Speaker 1: Ga gab Urbans maybe a little more all around. But
- 21:07Speaker 1: we have four guys that can play this position for
- 21:10Speaker 1: us whatever they are asked of them. I think that's
- 21:14Speaker 1: a good thing. I don't think that any of them.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I don't think this is a room that we're like,
- 21:19Speaker 1: oh my gosh, this running back room is stacked, like
- 21:21Speaker 1: this is an unbelievable running back room. I don't think
- 21:24Speaker 1: that's them. I just think they're solid and it's good
- 21:27Speaker 1: that we have four of them. I hope all four
- 21:29Speaker 1: of them can stay happy and and stay around here.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Ramier is the only senior, so we can keep three
- 21:35Speaker 1: of these guys for next year. That's a win.
- 21:40Speaker 2: You don't think this is the twenty twelve Alabama running
- 21:42Speaker 2: back room room that it was was like everyone was
- 21:45Speaker 2: a freaking NFL running back.
- 21:51Speaker 1: No.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Yeah, Like he's like you said, these guys aren't superstars
- 21:54Speaker 4: at all. But they're good, solid running backs and they're
- 21:56Speaker 4: all I'd say they're all about the same skill level.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I think they're all starting equality. I don't like, they're
- 22:01Speaker 2: again not superstar starting.
- 22:04Speaker 3: But there's none of you brag about.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think out of all of them, I feel
- 22:10Speaker 2: best about Gabe Irving, assuming he stays healthy. He's had
- 22:12Speaker 2: a little bit of an injury bug last couple of years.
- 22:15Speaker 2: I think he had was it a hit last year
- 22:17Speaker 2: that kept him out?
- 22:19Speaker 1: I mean all these guys that point I've had injuries.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Even Emmett got hurt a little bit last year where
- 22:24Speaker 1: Mere has been banged up as we know. I'm not
- 22:27Speaker 1: sure about Dwdell, but yeah, injury bug again. I think
- 22:31Speaker 1: that makes me feel better about I call it depth
- 22:35Speaker 1: because we have a lot of guys that can fill
- 22:36Speaker 1: in if someone were to go down, if and win.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Because let's see, Emmitt Johnson had four hundred yards last
- 22:45Speaker 2: year on ninety carries, so four point six to carry gave.
- 22:49Speaker 1: We're not going to have a thousand yard rusher this
- 22:51Speaker 1: year for the amount of times that we've ran the ball,
- 22:55Speaker 1: I don't. It's going to be rotated and guys are
- 22:59Speaker 1: going to have their game, their moment, and it's going
- 23:00Speaker 1: to feel like this is their week for the coaching staff,
- 23:03Speaker 1: and that's he's going to get twelve to fourteen snaps
- 23:05Speaker 1: and then the other guys are going to get six
- 23:06Speaker 1: to eight. Like that's how it's going to go.
- 23:09Speaker 2: You're gonna fumble and get pulled.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Yep, and that if that's getting stressed the way it should,
- 23:14Speaker 1: I mean, that should be how it happens. Now Dell
- 23:16Speaker 1: might get some more goal line carries for the bigger
- 23:19Speaker 1: guy that he is.
- 23:19Speaker 2: So and I think Doubdell looked really good. I have
- 23:23Speaker 2: not heard really anything from him since then, though I
- 23:28Speaker 2: have not, it hasn't really the running back room has
- 23:30Speaker 2: not really been talked about.
- 23:32Speaker 1: That's why it feels like he's four. I mean, just
- 23:34Speaker 1: from hearing the conversation, it feels like he's slid down
- 23:37Speaker 1: on the video game. I think Emmett, Ramiro, and Daldell
- 23:41Speaker 1: are all like seventy nine overall like the exact same.
- 23:43Speaker 1: And then Gabe Urban's not in the game, so hard
- 23:47Speaker 1: to know where he falls. But yeah, it just seems
- 23:49Speaker 1: like he's not getting much talk. So that would make
- 23:52Speaker 1: you think that maybe he's sitting in that four spot,
- 23:54Speaker 1: which is where we have him here.
- 23:57Speaker 2: I think probably gab Urban's good start, I think is
- 24:02Speaker 2: that who gets the first snap?
- 24:03Speaker 1: That's why the oars there. I think emmittt and gave
- 24:05Speaker 1: a role there. Who gets the first snap there at
- 24:07Speaker 1: running back first carry?
- 24:09Speaker 2: Gabe? Yeah, I see, I see Ramier as more probably
- 24:14Speaker 2: a special teams and receiving an option more than a
- 24:18Speaker 2: primary running back.
- 24:19Speaker 1: I'll go Emmett just to be different. All right, wide
- 24:24Speaker 1: receiver room, Hi have Donovan Raila there. That is not right.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Our wide receiver room is Garrett Maguire. There we go,
- 24:41Speaker 1: Here we go, Jamal Banks, Isaiah Nayer, two transfers coming
- 24:46Speaker 1: in from the portal, Malachi Coleman, Jaylen Lloyd, two speedsters,
- 24:52Speaker 1: Andrew Cory Barney should add him to that list. Parter Nelson,
- 24:56Speaker 1: who re recruit as a tight end. It just sounds
- 25:00Speaker 1: like he's too much of an athlete to keep off
- 25:01Speaker 1: the field, and he's sitting behind a couple of tight
- 25:03Speaker 1: ends here that will get to a second. So he's
- 25:06Speaker 1: gonna get some look at wide receiver, and I think
- 25:07Speaker 1: he's gonna play too. It really does sound like he's
- 25:11Speaker 1: gonna be on the field. Isaiah Garcia Castaneda, Deck's favorite
- 25:16Speaker 1: guy who's been here forever, as he says. Alex Bullock
- 25:21Speaker 1: another guy there to mention. I don't think Bonner's gonna
- 25:23Speaker 1: get too many looks here as a sophomore, but could
- 25:26Speaker 1: be there as well. A lot of names that have
- 25:30Speaker 1: gotten some positive talk amongst the coaches, the media, etc. Austin,
- 25:38Speaker 1: what do you think of this room here?
- 25:40Speaker 2: Well, I mean we didn't really lose a lot of talent,
- 25:43Speaker 2: so I don't think it's gonna be worse than last year.
- 25:45Speaker 2: We lost Billy keV Washington Fleeks.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Is that it?
- 25:50Speaker 3: And you ain't gonna miss any of those guys.
- 25:51Speaker 2: And I just think you're gonna miss any of them.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Big step up Jamal Banks is a and a or
- 25:57Speaker 2: I think those are very big especially Yeah, those are
- 26:01Speaker 2: probably our biggest transfers this year. It's not even close.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Just big bodied receivers that are gonna come in and
- 26:08Speaker 2: help up freshman quarterback catch with the large catch radius
- 26:12Speaker 2: and hopefully that that's good enough to kind of bove
- 26:14Speaker 2: Malachi down. I think Jalen Wood. They really like Jalen Lloyd.
- 26:18Speaker 2: I mean they love how fast he is. I saw
- 26:20Speaker 2: something talking about how much weight he's put on, but
- 26:23Speaker 2: he hasn't lost any speed. Didn't you court Barney get
- 26:28Speaker 2: injured during the spring game.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Didn't he like, Yeah, he's been banged up. Yeah, Okay.
- 26:38Speaker 2: I feel a lot better about theide receiver room than
- 26:40Speaker 2: I do last year. I think speed, lots of speed,
- 26:43Speaker 2: a lot of size. I mean, we got four guys
- 26:47Speaker 2: over six four. That's pretty good, and they're they're good
- 26:51Speaker 2: players like they're I think they're all good players over
- 26:53Speaker 2: six four. They're not like scrubs that are just in there.
- 26:56Speaker 2: I'll be interest to see what Carteron Nelson does as
- 26:58Speaker 2: a freshman tight end coming in a wide receiver. But
- 27:02Speaker 2: I'm actually pretty excited about the wide receiver room this year.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I say, go ahead, Deck.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Is this Garcia Casno? Is this his second time back?
- 27:14Speaker 2: Yes?
- 27:14Speaker 1: As a senior. Yeah, I don't know. Well, I don't
- 27:18Speaker 1: get what your love is for just I don't I.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Don't get how he's still here.
- 27:24Speaker 4: I swear to god he's playing college football in like
- 27:26Speaker 4: two thousand and five.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Uh. My concern or for I guess at this room
- 27:33Speaker 1: is same as the running back room. There is a
- 27:35Speaker 1: lot of hyph. I would say this is probably one
- 27:37Speaker 1: of the most talked about positions on the entire roster
- 27:41Speaker 1: so far this spring offseason. There still though I don't
- 27:47Speaker 1: do we have a guy? Do we have a guy
- 27:49Speaker 1: that when we need to get a third down? Who
- 27:51Speaker 1: are we throwing it to? I hope that could be
- 27:54Speaker 1: one of these two transfers that we brought in. They
- 27:57Speaker 1: seem to be leading the room, which is good because
- 27:59Speaker 1: it young. I mean, besides those two and I gc
- 28:03Speaker 1: Dax lover that they and they're there, that's a young room.
- 28:08Speaker 1: It's a young group. I hope they're good enough to
- 28:11Speaker 1: get open like that's the big thing. And if we're
- 28:13Speaker 1: gonna throw it, that needs to be the case. What
- 28:15Speaker 1: you said, guys said though, with the speed, we're gonna
- 28:18Speaker 1: need hit some beat balls this year, and I think
- 28:20Speaker 1: we have the quarterback to do it. We need these
- 28:22Speaker 1: guys to be able to go like Trey Palmer used
- 28:25Speaker 1: to go and Samari Turre used to go, and I
- 28:29Speaker 1: think they can. That's that's like the really high ceiling
- 28:35Speaker 1: for me is if these guys are actually just these
- 28:37Speaker 1: stud athletes and we got the quarterback now that can
- 28:40Speaker 1: get them the ball enty spaces like, it could be
- 28:42Speaker 1: a it could be a dangerous room. I think there's
- 28:44Speaker 1: a very low floor and a very high ceiling. There's
- 28:48Speaker 1: not a whole lot to know what to expect, but
- 28:50Speaker 1: it is a quote unquote deep room, a lot of
- 28:52Speaker 1: interchangeable guys. I think, especially adding in Carter Nelson, these
- 28:57Speaker 1: two seniors, they need to lead the room though, and
- 28:59Speaker 1: they need to come out. They can't be Billy Kemp.
- 29:01Speaker 1: They cannot be Billy Kemp. Thanks, Okay, moving on, tight
- 29:11Speaker 1: end room, make this one a little shorter. Thomas Paddoni,
- 29:17Speaker 1: Nick more sure, solid room.
- 29:20Speaker 2: This is one of the very good players.
- 29:22Speaker 1: I like this room the best out of any other room.
- 29:24Speaker 1: I feel the best about them. We have to use
- 29:27Speaker 1: them the right way. We have to get them involved.
- 29:30Speaker 1: We have to get Fiddoni the ball in space and
- 29:32Speaker 1: not jumping the ball for in traffic and twisting and turning.
- 29:35Speaker 1: They gotta stay healthy. Yes, but this is we have
- 29:38Speaker 1: to utilize these two guys. It is a good one
- 29:41Speaker 1: two punch of tight end.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Get these guys out on the flat and let them run.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I went. I really love our tight ends. I
- 29:50Speaker 2: mean I personally am a tight end guy whenever I
- 29:53Speaker 2: played Yeah or mad and I'm always I love the
- 29:56Speaker 2: two tight end sets. Just give me the big boys
- 29:58Speaker 2: the ball. So I'm really hoping that Tomas Madoni and
- 30:01Speaker 2: a Porkshire just both used a ton.
- 30:06Speaker 1: All right. The most important position group, the offensive line.
- 30:12Speaker 1: A lot to talk about here, Number one, the biggest
- 30:17Speaker 1: important thing. Protect Dylan Raiola. That is what matters I
- 30:26Speaker 1: think the most going into the year. Obviously, we I
- 30:28Speaker 1: think we have to have a strong run game right
- 30:32Speaker 1: now with Teddy Prohasta going down. We got Corkoran probably
- 30:35Speaker 1: starting at left tackle, Justin Evans Jenkins at left guard,
- 30:39Speaker 1: Ben Scott at center, mikeah Mazuka, a lot of really
- 30:42Speaker 1: good talks about him at right guard, Bryce ben Hart
- 30:45Speaker 1: taking a big step from last year. They're at right tackle,
- 30:49Speaker 1: and then we got some young guys behind him. I
- 30:52Speaker 1: don't know how many of them are ready to play.
- 30:55Speaker 1: This is where the question of depth I think worries
- 30:59Speaker 1: me a little bit. We have experience. We've said that
- 31:03Speaker 1: before here in our preseason talks. We have experience here.
- 31:08Speaker 1: I don't know what the word depth means here because
- 31:12Speaker 1: it drops off pretty fast. One guy gets injured, one
- 31:14Speaker 1: guy goes down. You're throwing in Henry Latowski. Are we
- 31:17Speaker 1: comfortable with him coming in? Jacob Hood, Gunner Gatula, are
- 31:21Speaker 1: you ready to step in at Ohio State in week eight?
- 31:24Speaker 1: If Corkoran goes down to protect Rile at blindside. This
- 31:28Speaker 1: is where it's scary. But at the same time, how
- 31:31Speaker 1: many top and we're not even a top. How many
- 31:35Speaker 1: powerfied programs. I mean, have seven or eight guys that
- 31:39Speaker 1: you know they're comfortable. There's probably not many. I mean,
- 31:41Speaker 1: you're you're gonna have some of these younger guys coming in.
- 31:43Speaker 1: If guys go down, that's just the reality of it.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Yeah, losing Perrosco is kind of a That was a
- 31:50Speaker 2: real bummer because that was kind of the one guy that, like, yeah,
- 31:52Speaker 2: he could put him in a couple of different positions
- 31:54Speaker 2: that if he's not starting.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Well you felt if he was going to start, you
- 31:57Speaker 1: felt Corkoran was that guy that maybe you could.
- 32:00Speaker 2: I mean, right, their seniors are big, they've been around,
- 32:04Speaker 2: they can play several different positions, so that was kind
- 32:06Speaker 2: of the one cog that you can move in and out.
- 32:08Speaker 2: And without that, it gets a lot tighter. I mean,
- 32:11Speaker 2: you feel good that you're starting. Your starters are all seniors,
- 32:14Speaker 2: except for your left guard who started last year. Towards
- 32:18Speaker 2: the end of the year, Like, I feel good about
- 32:22Speaker 2: Ben Scott, Bryce. Ben Hart's really come around. I think
- 32:26Speaker 2: he is doing a lot better. I think I honestly
- 32:30Speaker 2: think Turner Corkoran got improved last year, so hopefully we
- 32:32Speaker 2: can build off of that and have another good year
- 32:34Speaker 2: of development. But yeah, you're right, just DeFi was ously
- 32:38Speaker 2: the starters. I don't even know who I'd say is
- 32:42Speaker 2: our next best lineman.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Yeah, you better hope the corking doesn't go down. Yeah,
- 32:49Speaker 4: that's that's That's why it's such a big gloss. Lost
- 32:52Speaker 4: another guy because now you now you're stuck with two
- 32:54Speaker 4: freshmen backing them up.
- 32:56Speaker 3: I mean, it's blind.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Side, it's everywhere, right, It's not just corkorn. I think
- 33:01Speaker 1: offensive line. Yes, they're their position, but they also can
- 33:04Speaker 1: get moved around much. Why you see Latowsky on here
- 33:06Speaker 1: in different places, you see justin Evans, Jakin's on here
- 33:08Speaker 1: a couple of different places. Guys can move around if
- 33:11Speaker 1: need be. But you're right. Outside of those top five,
- 33:16Speaker 1: we have a lot of guys without much experience. I
- 33:19Speaker 1: will say this three ten, three fifteen, three ten, three
- 33:23Speaker 1: twenty five, three fifteen, Like you like to see that
- 33:26Speaker 1: that looks really good. I heard Jacob hoods. I heard
- 33:30Speaker 1: Jacob hood is losing weight, which is good. I think
- 33:34Speaker 1: three fifties a little notice, but I did. I did
- 33:40Speaker 1: hear he's slimming down, which is good. He needs to
- 33:44Speaker 1: to be able to play, not a fat jokes needs
- 33:48Speaker 1: so we can move on the offensive line. So I
- 33:51Speaker 1: think there's pieces here, but it's not very deep, and
- 33:55Speaker 1: it's still the most important position. It is it, it
- 33:58Speaker 1: always will be. I don't care how much hype we
- 34:01Speaker 1: want to talk about any other position. That's why I
- 34:03Speaker 1: wanted to start with the With the offensive line. You
- 34:05Speaker 1: have to have a good core upfront half. It's a must,
- 34:08Speaker 1: and if you don't, nothing else is gonna work.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Your game will work, your past game will where it
- 34:14Speaker 2: doesn't matter.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Your play your play calling looks like ship the no
- 34:17Speaker 1: matter what you're trying to do. So you need to
- 34:18Speaker 1: have a good offensive line. We will obviously be talking
- 34:21Speaker 1: about the offensive line over and over, but a lot
- 34:24Speaker 1: of times you don't know who these guys are because
- 34:26Speaker 1: they're not the guys making the headlines. They never have.
- 34:29Speaker 1: That's why it's gonna be good.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Brice Bennard's gonna become the leading Husker and starts this year.
- 34:36Speaker 1: At all tile.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Wow, he was awful two years ago the lineman in
- 34:45Speaker 3: the nation.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Yes, that was not good. Neither hass been good.
- 34:51Speaker 2: So that's what surprised they were. That's they were sophomores
- 34:55Speaker 2: and guess who's backing up them sophomores not great people.
- 34:59Speaker 1: But but maybe that means because we're not starting sophomores
- 35:02Speaker 1: that we could be better. That's that's that's been the
- 35:05Speaker 1: hard part is you know you return for four or
- 35:09Speaker 1: five guys that have experienced here well for now without prosca,
- 35:12Speaker 1: and you say, okay, that's good. Well is it good?
- 35:16Speaker 1: Like we have not had a solid offensive line. They
- 35:19Speaker 1: got better last year, really bad.
- 35:21Speaker 3: Three years ago.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I think there was a big improvement last year. I
- 35:23Speaker 2: feel pretty good about this offensive line, the starters I should.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Correct as long as we stay healthy. The only hard part,
- 35:31Speaker 1: and I'm not saying we're a playoff team, but it
- 35:33Speaker 1: is more like of a fourteen to fifteen game schedule now.
- 35:36Speaker 1: And actually that's why I love Georgia to win it
