Transcript
- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to the final
- 0:01episode of season one of No Dirt No Flowers.
- 0:05In this episode, Mike and Drew will be interviewing
- 0:07each other and asking questions both professional
- 0:09and personal. Also, Drew will be throwing a couple
- 0:12questions my way, so I will follow up at the
- 0:15end of the episode to answer those for you to
- 0:17listen to and enjoy the last episode of 2025.
- 0:31Here we are. We've got meese cups. These are
- 0:36moose, Clark Griswold moose cups. How come they
- 0:40call more than one goose geese, but not more
- 0:42than one moose meese? All right. So today we
- 0:46are interviewing each other. Yep. As our last
- 0:50episode of the year. Yep. Now I understand that
- 0:53you will be starting with me. Oh, really? That's
- 0:56what you said. So that's what I've been preparing
- 0:58for. Oh. But I'm going to start with one question
- 1:02just to kick off. Adversity comes in many different
- 1:06ways on a daily basis over a long period of time
- 1:11and we have to rise to the occasion. How do you,
- 1:15when you are in a bad mood, how do you navigate
- 1:20that and what do you do to get yourself out of
- 1:21those bad moods? As Liz pours an IPA in your...
- 1:33Depends. That was a hot take. Usually it is exercising.
- 1:41Usually that's what gets me out of a bad mood.
- 1:44Thank you. Well, do you want to go run down to
- 1:49field 46 over here and back? No, because it'll
- 1:54probably just remind me of the fact that we had
- 1:56to sell it. Oh, my gosh. See, sarcasm helps a
- 2:01little bit, too, or like voicing like the. Yeah,
- 2:04like sarcasm. Like, I'm so happy to be here right
- 2:06now with a grumpy cat. Voicing the negativity
- 2:17in my head helps. See, it's helping a little
- 2:19bit. Good. All right. Prost. Prost. Well, Liz,
- 2:28way to deliver on the Christmas cocktail. Oh,
- 2:30my gosh, that's good. It is good. It's very nice.
- 2:33Oh, actually, the addition of the beer helped
- 2:38it. Yeah, taste your creation. Pint House Mosaic
- 2:44Takedown by way of Yakimachi Branches. Wonderful
- 2:47Christmas gift. Combined with Liz Roy's Paloma.
- 2:52Which, I love it. Okay, what was this lovely
- 2:56recipe? Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, lime
- 3:00juice. I made a simple syrup, and then it said
- 3:04to float a hazy IPA on top, which we did not
- 3:07have. But the closest thing was this mosaic takedown
- 3:11from Pint House. Lovely. It's very good. I could
- 3:16have a lot of these right now. Tell me this.
- 3:18Do you only wear your red hat during the Christmas
- 3:22week? It gets, yeah. We went over this Thanksgiving
- 3:26break. It started Thanksgiving break. Okay. I
- 3:29love it. No, it's very nice. My family made fun
- 3:32of me. I didn't make fun of you. You said, did
- 3:34you bring this all the way down just to wear
- 3:37on Thanksgiving? I might have made fun of you.
- 3:40Just a little bit, though. That's okay. It's
- 3:42festive. It's very festive. Probably wear it
- 3:45into January and then retire it. Okay. The only
- 3:48thing that's missing is the white ball on top.
- 3:50That's exactly what you said. Thanksgiving, and
- 3:54I remember I took it off, and I was like, I hate
- 3:55you. I wish that you did have a white ball on
- 3:59top. Okay, I'll work on that one. I almost brought
- 4:02you guys Christmas hats to wear. I probably wouldn't
- 4:05have. No, too much. All right. I'm interviewing
- 4:11you first. Yeah. So just run down through all
- 4:14my questions first? Let's just see where they
- 4:16go. All right. Well, it's our last podcast of
- 4:22the year. And how do you think the year went?
- 4:26That's my first question. On podcasting or on
- 4:31in general, personally, economically at the farm?
- 4:37I mean, what are we talking about here? No, I
- 4:38think we'll get into other. I think I have other
- 4:40questions more about. I mean, I feel like we've
- 4:45covered a lot of the farm related stuff. So this
- 4:47is more about how we felt. the podcast did and
- 4:52maybe a little bit of personal in there sure
- 4:56yeah well i'll tell you i think the i think the
- 5:00podcast got off half with a bang and half rocky
- 5:06you know we found our groove so to speak throughout
- 5:10the year i think we had some really cool guests
- 5:12on and i don't know generally speaking i feel
- 5:19good about it Got a lot of good feedback. Yeah,
- 5:24for never doing it, being amateurs, we are damn
- 5:26close to professionals that freelance for when
- 5:31we put the free in freelance. Podcasting's like
- 5:38farming. We don't make any money at it. No. Yeah,
- 5:43I think it went good. What was your favorite
- 5:46episode and why? Ooh. Ooh, Dougie. I like the
- 5:55one with Isaiah on it. I like the one with Blake
- 5:58on it. I don't know. I couldn't because we covered
- 6:02so much ground already that I don't think that
- 6:07I could pick a favorite. There's a decent chance
- 6:10this could be my favorite by the time all is
- 6:11said and done. Who knows? What was your favorite?
- 6:18i'm not prepared for this question i'm not prepared
- 6:22for any of these questions it's not like we pre
- 6:24-screened i like the one with blake like the
- 6:30one with i don't know i liked all of our guests
- 6:35to pick a favorite out of our guests would be
- 6:39challenging i mean i think in all of those we
- 6:43touched on you know potential improvements that
- 6:46could be made to the industry. So anytime that
- 6:50topic comes up, I like it regardless of whether
- 6:54it's just us two or you had 10 guests out of
- 6:58the 15 episodes. Well, 11 dad was a repeat. Huh?
- 7:02That's pretty good. That's really good. Yeah.
- 7:06Yeah. What do you want to see differently going
- 7:09into the 2026 podcasting year? More guests, more
- 7:16roadshow stuff. Well, any roadshow stuff for
- 7:21that matter. Yeah, we need to dial in our...
- 7:23I've been a little nervous to kick that one off
- 7:26just because there's a whole different layer
- 7:29of technical planning and difficulties with that.
- 7:33But we will... Well, we're going to kick that
- 7:35off in January, so we'll see how it goes. Yeah.
- 7:39And new topics like... I really want to get Zach
- 7:46from Crosby on. Oh, yeah? I love his marketing
- 7:52prowess, and he would be really fun to interview,
- 7:55I think. But I don't know. I think next year
- 7:59is going to be really sweet. Love it. Let me
- 8:02see. I had this one. This is like a personal
- 8:04one, but I think I might save that one for later.
- 8:09Would it be better if we just alternated questions?
- 8:12Probably. That's how I was originally thinking
- 8:14about it. Sweet. Okay. So my turn. Yep. You are
- 8:18trapped, lost. Oh, I love where this is going
- 8:23already. In the middle of the forest. Okay. You
- 8:28have, I know this sounds weird, but you have
- 8:33a pet cougar. Okay. And he's very loyal. It might
- 8:43be a she, I don't know. So of no danger to you
- 8:46at all, and you get, besides the clothes on your
- 8:50back, you get three items, and you have no idea
- 8:56what forest you're in, what continent, anything.
- 9:02What would those three items be? You've got to
- 9:05survive and find your way out. A way to start
- 9:09a fire. Okay, a little more specific than that.
- 9:14Really? I need to get really specific? You could
- 9:19say a lighter. Well, what I'd probably do is
- 9:21choose one of those Rambo knives that have, like,
- 9:24you know, the fire starter thing, like, in the
- 9:26case, because then I'm kind of getting a two
- 9:28-for -one on that. Okay. And maybe there's some
- 9:30other utility devices on that knife, survival
- 9:34knife. So, like, a really fancy multi -tool.
- 9:37Okay, I like that. I mean, if I could choose
- 9:43anything, I'd probably pick some sort of like
- 9:45GPS navigation device. Okay. Oh, see, but then
- 9:50you would know where you were at. Exactly. Okay,
- 9:54fine. I didn't say that was a rule. That's fine.
- 9:56Whatever. And now since I'm assuming that I can
- 10:00keep myself warm, kill things with my Rambo knife,
- 10:04and know where I'm at and navigate myself out,
- 10:06then I'd probably get something for my little
- 10:09buddy. I don't know what a cougar would want
- 10:16that it couldn't get itself. I don't know. You
- 10:22got to give me something, though. I know. I'm
- 10:25thinking about a nice little food dish that we
- 10:28can take its killings with us, I guess. You're
- 10:32going to feed your cougar out of a dish? Guess
- 10:37who I'm not getting trapped in the forest with?
- 10:42Hey, Drew, you want to go for a hike? Nope. No.
- 10:44Not at all. I got this food dish here. Yep. Rambo
- 10:53knife, multi -tool, GPS unit, and a nice gift
- 10:59for my cougar pet. Okay. So here's a question.
- 11:04Would you use that, like, dual purpose for you
- 11:06to drink water out of? Probably not. You better
- 11:13hope you find those streams. I know. All right.
- 11:18Well, I mean, if I was going to only look out
- 11:20for myself, given that information, maybe I'd
- 11:24pick like a life straw or something like that.
- 11:28You just like suck water out and it filters it.
- 11:31Yeah. Yeah. Good idea. Okay. What was your favorite?
- 11:41Thing or event that happened in 2025? One personal,
- 11:49one professional. Well, that's a good question.
- 11:54Could be anything. Your favorite anything from
- 11:582025, professionally and personally. There was
- 12:04a lot of good stuff professionally this year.
- 12:09Like the Crosby thing was really great. Ooh,
- 12:12I know my very favorite thing. My favorite professional
- 12:15moment was when we were in Germany and we got
- 12:19on that tractor with the trailer and went down
- 12:22to the Volksfest and we drove down the road with
- 12:24like 20 drunken Germans drinking beer, going
- 12:29to a Volksfest where there's like, you know,
- 12:32a bunch of tubas and polka and things like that
- 12:34going on. That was my favorite. experience professionally.
- 12:41Now, favorite thing that happened, I really like
- 12:46what happened to our pellet plants this year.
- 12:48I like that we're making huge strides in getting
- 12:54the team lean and mean and down to fighting weight.
- 12:59I really like that. Personally, Uh, I think it
- 13:09was when we went, you were actually here for
- 13:10this. I think it was when I went with my family
- 13:13up for Paxton's bike race up to the loop loop
- 13:16and he placed sixth and had the best race of
- 13:21his life. He kicked ass that a particular day
- 13:26and it was, it was just a fun time all around
- 13:29and then to watch him like train and prepare.
- 13:31Cause the week before his chain fell off or something
- 13:34like that off of his bike. And so he got like
- 13:39a really bad place and he was beating himself
- 13:41up for that. And then he just went after it.
- 13:44That's awesome. Yes, I did get to briefly experience
- 13:48that up there with you. In your flip flops. Yeah.
- 13:52In the snow. Yeah. There's some miscalculations
- 13:58on that one. It worked out. Still on my feet.
- 14:02That you do. Liz, how do you feel about... Mike
- 14:06and his flip -flops. I mean, I'm so used to it
- 14:09at this point. It's just funny. It's the first
- 14:12thing I said when he got out of the car today.
- 14:13I was like, still on the flip -flops. Yeah, there's
- 14:16a zero question. Okay, so speaking of hippies,
- 14:22you've got a, oh, how do we call this? Your thing
- 14:30is a little bit abstract. You're part hippie.
- 14:36You're part capitalist. The hybrid. The hybrid.
- 14:40You're an artiste. Former. Kind of a romantic.
- 14:45Former artiste. No, no, no, no, no. At your core,
- 14:48you're an artiste. A real smattering of Mike
- 14:52-ness. You're gluten -free, but sometimes you
- 14:56have beers. You're a mountaineer and a skier.
- 15:05Very much, I think people would say you're a
- 15:07hippie, but then you don't really fit the hippie
- 15:10mold. So how did all of this come together? How
- 15:12did the Mike -ness come to be? Trial and error?
- 15:18Was it all organic? Oh, no, I think there's trial
- 15:20and error. There's multiple phases. It's an ongoing
- 15:23joke inside the family about my phases. There's
- 15:27like a this phase and a that phase. Can you be
- 15:32more specific, please? I mean, I could. Yeah.
- 15:35All right, here we go. Come on, bring it out.
- 15:40I mean, we can cut this. No, stop saying we'll
- 15:43cut it. Just go. The Subaru Outback phase. Oh,
- 15:47yeah. And then the Argyle sweater phase with
- 15:50glasses. I went through an Argyle sweater phase?
- 15:53I mean, it was very limited. Some of these were
- 15:55really fast. A couple weeks. Yeah, some of these
- 15:57were really fast, and I was like, no, that's
- 15:58not fitting. I mean. You went through the dressing
- 16:03up nice phase. I did. When I first came back
- 16:06into the industry, I tried that out. I mean,
- 16:10I enjoy a nice business casual event with jeans
- 16:13and a sport coat. But much beyond that, it feels
- 16:18like I'm diverging from... Your Mike -ness. Yep.
- 16:22Yeah. So do you feel like there's just been the
- 16:26core there the whole time and you're just testing
- 16:27out the external to match the internal? I think
- 16:31so. Makes sense. And now you've got a full sleeve
- 16:37tattoo. That one you can't back out of. I'm obviously
- 16:41fully committed on this tattoo. Sure. Which I
- 16:46feel really good about. Did I ever tell you about
- 16:48the time I had to cover up a tattoo? No. True
- 16:51story. One time I told my wife, next time I go
- 16:55get a tattoo. Oh, you did tell me about this.
- 16:57Well, now the listeners are curious. Yeah. I
- 17:02said, next time I get a tattoo, I was totally
- 17:03joking. I said, I'm going to get your name tattooed
- 17:06on my chest. And she goes, okay. And you're like,
- 17:11green light. And I was like, oh, I guess she
- 17:13wants me to do it. So then I, my wife does not
- 17:16say too many swear words very often. But I got
- 17:20a Jolly Roger, this guy right here. And I also
- 17:25got Julia tattooed on my left pectoral muscle.
- 17:30Where your heart's at. Right over it. And I came
- 17:34home, and I showed her, and she said, what the
- 17:39did you do? I said, you said okay, and you smiled
- 17:46like you wanted it. She said, I thought you were
- 17:48joking. I said, oh, I thought you were serious.
- 17:51I was joking. You really covered it? Oh, yeah.
- 17:57What'd you cover it with? Got a massive lion
- 18:01on my chest. No signs of Julia. Julia's under
- 18:03the lion. You can see it. It's like right there.
- 18:08You can see parts of it. Sorry, I'm a little
- 18:11chubby. I used to be much chubbier, though. Materially.
- 18:18Materially. There's a phase. Yeah. So, yeah,
- 18:23circling back around, trial and error a little
- 18:25bit. The core was always there, which was a struggle
- 18:28growing up. not to get too deep into it. Finding
- 18:32how to make the outside match the inside. Yeah,
- 18:35I think it has more to do, it had more to do
- 18:38with trying out different exterior expressions
- 18:43that, I don't know, somehow fit in with where
- 18:50I was at and how I was interacting with society.
- 18:54So as an example, coming back into the industry,
- 18:56it's like, oh, you need to dress nice and be
- 18:58professional. But it didn't feel very authentic.
- 19:03Yeah. Love it. Yep. Oh, my turn? Oh, yeah. Oh,
- 19:08man. All right. It's the question that I asked
- 19:12you when you were traveling. What do you hope
- 19:17to accomplish at Roy Farms for you personally?
- 19:24And what do you hope to accomplish for the industry
- 19:27at large? Ooh, great question. In your career.
- 19:33Let's start with the industry at large first.
- 19:36Yeah, I figured that'd be easier. Okay. I would
- 19:39like to be a part of shepherding in change and
- 19:44stability to the industry. See more balance,
- 19:51equity throughout the hop supply chain. Yeah,
- 19:57I think largely over the last... 15 years we
- 20:00saw this massive ramp up and then as things have
- 20:03retreated back it was all sunshine and roses
- 20:08on the way up but then on the way down there
- 20:11weren't mechanisms in place to uh to keep stability
- 20:17and there's a lot that goes into that and i don't
- 20:21want to over romanticize how much any actor in
- 20:27this industry can But I think we can lead by
- 20:32example and, you know, continue building good
- 20:36relationships with growers and brewers, merchants,
- 20:40and use our scale, reputation, assets, breeding,
- 20:45all of that sort of stuff to create a better
- 20:49supply chain, make better beer, better farmers,
- 20:54hopefully develop more people. within our company
- 20:59and hopefully they'll go out if they so see fit
- 21:02to go work for other organizations and benefit.
- 21:05Hopefully that we can have some influence on
- 21:08that. For me personally, I want to see Roy Farms
- 21:16flourish, so to speak, because if Roy Farms does
- 21:24well, then I do well. for the Roy family to continue
- 21:27owning and operating this farm for another five
- 21:31generations. And, uh, that would be pretty darn
- 21:35cool. Will be cool. In fact, when we get to that
- 21:38and we're making really big strides in that direction.
- 21:42So yeah. And then at some point, as you know,
- 21:46I'd like to. find replacements for the work that
- 21:50I'm doing or the main work that I do on the ranch.
- 21:53Hopefully we get to a place where that's no longer
- 21:55needed. And then maybe I'm just like a special
- 21:59projects guy. I mean, I know this is a question
- 22:02on a question, but what would that... That's
- 22:04totally fine. It's an interview. Yeah. What would...
- 22:07If you had to think about an ideal special project,
- 22:10what would that be right now? I don't know. I
- 22:15like fixing things that are broken. So we'd have
- 22:20to find something that's broken. Right now we
- 22:24got plenty of that. There's a lot less. But I
- 22:28don't know. I'm more of a when it comes, it comes
- 22:32type guy. Yeah. Your turn. Tell me about the
- 22:39biggest joys of working with your father and
- 22:48your siblings. And the biggest challenges. Oh,
- 22:53man. I mean, the biggest joy in working with
- 23:02my family is that I just don't think that that
- 23:06happens that often. So it's a pretty cool scenario
- 23:11to get along with your family and work with them.
- 23:15And generally speaking, while there's challenges.
- 23:20We all get along really well, so that's cool.
- 23:24It's just enjoyable. It's enjoyable in a unique
- 23:28situation. Follow -up question. What's the biggest
- 23:31challenge of working with your family? And being
- 23:35the CEO. Yeah. And the oldest brother. Oldest
- 23:39sibling. I think the biggest challenge has been
- 23:43just wading through everybody's expectations.
- 23:48Some of them are communicated, some of them are
- 23:49uncommunicated. And along with that, transitioning
- 23:53from my dad as CEO to me, it was very, very haphazard.
- 24:01I mean, I kind of look back at it and laugh now,
- 24:03but, you know, it wasn't a very clearly defined
- 24:07path. And so fortunately, through all of that,
- 24:11we've maintained a really good relationship,
- 24:12even when we went through a couple really hard
- 24:15patches there and we're, you know. yelling profanities
- 24:19at each other at the farm like i think even on
- 24:22some of those days i would go up to his house
- 24:24and have a glass of wine with him at night and
- 24:26we'd be totally fine and so i don't know i mean
- 24:28that's a challenging thing i mean when you put
- 24:30your life into something i i get it looking back
- 24:33now part of the problem or the challenge is that
- 24:37generation basically had their entire being wrapped
- 24:43up in the farm or the business and how successful
- 24:48it was and it just and some of that was probably
- 24:52out of necessity but that did not set up a good
- 24:57transition because you were kind of taking away
- 25:02their entire identity in the process that that
- 25:06was probably the biggest challenge is the transition
- 25:08and and then just yeah waiting through i mean
- 25:12even like liz and i you know had our rounds there
- 25:14where oh Because we're both Roy's, it's like
- 25:19maybe that conversation was more heated and debated
- 25:24than if it was just an employee I was talking
- 25:31to. I've learned to bite my tongue. We both can
- 25:36get a little mouthy. We can get a little mouthy.
- 25:38Oh, but then, like you said, laugh it off like
- 25:4110 minutes later. Yeah, but that's I think where
- 25:43that's I think a gift that our family has is
- 25:46that we can be really, really we don't we don't
- 25:49hide or sugarcoat a lot of things. All the emotions
- 25:52come out and then we can kind of flip gears and
- 25:55be like, ah, what's next? So then my next question,
- 26:01I guess a follow up to that, not to hijack two
- 26:03questions in a row, but it's related. Where did
- 26:07the Italian come into your family at? What do
- 26:10you mean the Italian? I mean, I went over to
- 26:15your dad's cabin last year and witnessed all
- 26:20of the family together. Were you there for that?
- 26:25No. Oh. It was just Liz and Andy. No, because
- 26:28you were using our cabin. Oh, yeah. But it was
- 26:31like watching a bunch of, like... Italian Catholics
- 26:35converse. Like everybody talks over each other
- 26:37and is like showering at each other. And then
- 26:39you're like, what on earth is going on here?
- 26:41But it was all, it was wonderful to witness.
- 26:45But there's something, maybe that's the French
- 26:48Canadian. I don't know where it comes from heritage
- 26:53wise, but it is a thing. I mean, when we get
- 26:56together, you can, if you had a decibel meter
- 26:58in the room. you would just see this gradual
- 27:01rise and maybe even a spike at some point. Do
- 27:04you think that's where your loud voice comes
- 27:09from? Versus like, hey, we're going to go have
- 27:11a meeting in a restaurant. Okay, well, everybody's
- 27:13going to hear everything. I don't know, man.
- 27:18Could be. You just got to talk at like a higher
- 27:21decibel. I also think too, as I get more passionate
- 27:25about something. I start getting more animated
- 27:29and I start talking louder. That comes from the
- 27:32Roy dining room table. Good. What is the biggest
- 27:37fight that ever like family all out war that's
- 27:40ever happened? Because I've seen you guys like
- 27:44there's alliances and they like they move very
- 27:46quickly. I mean, I don't know if we've had like
- 27:52a big like family wide thing. To your point,
- 27:56it's usually between two or three people, and
- 28:01then maybe the rest just kind of sit on the sidelines.
- 28:07Oh, no. I've seen like jumping in. I'm this ally.
- 28:10I'm that ally. No, wait a second. Now I got turned
- 28:14on. And I've only witnessed this once, but I
- 28:16said, wow, that is awesome. My turn. I got one
- 28:24more, and then I want to talk. 2026 predictions
- 28:28is my category. Oh, wow. We are taking a wildly
- 28:33different approach to our interviews. Yours is
- 28:35work. I'm personal. Mine's what? Work. Professional.
- 28:40It's both. Keep going. This one's personal. Oh.
- 28:47Do you... How do I phrase this question? Do you
- 28:54still feel coming to work for Roy Farms is a
- 28:58good decision? Or should I rephrase that question?
- 29:04If another job offer came up today, would I take
- 29:07it? I don't think the answer to that would be
- 29:10yes. But maybe there's a different way to phrase
- 29:12that. So obviously there was the whole discussion
- 29:19we had prior to you coming to work here. And
- 29:24one of the things that I remember you saying,
- 29:26it wasn't necessarily before, could have been
- 29:30after, was that you really liked the idea of
- 29:34company turnarounds, working on company turnarounds.
- 29:39And I think that kind of dovetails into your
- 29:41comment earlier about you like solving puzzles,
- 29:45which I think is something that both of us share.
- 29:47We both like puzzles. But I think it would probably
- 29:51be accurate to say, correct me if I'm wrong,
- 29:53that the amount of energy that is taken and is
- 29:58still taking might have been more than you or
- 30:04both of us thought. That's very true. So we've
- 30:09been going on two to three years of like really
- 30:14intense effort. And it's getting, you know. It's
- 30:18tapering off, fortunately. But, I mean, you can't
- 30:22take your finger off the pulse because there's
- 30:26not a whole lot of room for error. Can't take
- 30:29your finger off the throttle either. Yeah. So,
- 30:32I don't know. With all that being said, what
- 30:35are your thoughts around all of that now? I mean...
- 30:37Okay, I got enough to go off of. I think if you
- 30:42would ask me this question five months ago...
- 30:47when I thought we would be farther along in certain
- 30:49areas and knowing how much work it was going
- 30:53to be to turn it around, if I would have known
- 30:55that before coming to work, I probably would
- 31:00not have. However, today, not in a regretting
- 31:06way at all, just like a whoa. Today, given where
- 31:11we're at and the progress we've made in the last
- 31:13few months, internally and externally in the
- 31:17market. It's one of those, man, this climb was
- 31:20a lot steeper than I thought it was, but a beer
- 31:22is going to taste a lot better at the top than
- 31:25it would have if I just went to the bar and had
- 31:27a beer. Like it's one of those things where it's
- 31:30all, I knew it was going to be a challenge. I
- 31:35didn't know it was going to be this big of a
- 31:37challenge. But like when we look at the development
- 31:41of our staff, And what has happened there, relationships,
- 31:47the Crosby partnership, all kinds of stuff. It's
- 31:53pretty rewarding. And so I wouldn't trade anything
- 31:57for it. I wouldn't go back in time and not do
- 32:00it. Yeah. That's good. Yeah. It's been fun. And
- 32:07challenging. And really challenging. So what
- 32:10are the top three areas that... doesn't have
- 32:14to be top three what were the areas that required
- 32:17just a lot more effort than you thought refinance
- 32:22well when i got when because i reviewed the financials
- 32:27beforehand and i you know i obviously knew that
- 32:29things were rough but there was also a massive
- 32:35purchase and sale agreement in place that fell
- 32:37through and that purchase and sale agreement
- 32:39would have changed a lot of stuff But it didn't
- 32:44go through, or part of it didn't go through.
- 32:47And just to be clear, I think you're talking
- 32:50about a PSA on some of our Apple -related assets.
- 32:55Yes. Yep. Which could still come through, but
- 33:01there's a lot of question marks around it. And
- 33:03to date, it has not, which has still left some
- 33:07pressure on the balance sheet. Yes. Had that
- 33:14have gone through, I don't think we would have
- 33:16turned over as many rocks as we've turned over
- 33:18and found as many areas for them. Because when
- 33:21it didn't go through, that's, you know, that's
- 33:22a huge amount of money that would have paid down
- 33:30a bunch of stuff. But we've had to figure out
- 33:35ways around, like, failure just simply put is
- 33:38not an option. basically evaluate the entire
- 33:45organization everything from people to business
- 33:50units that we're working in or divesting from
- 33:53or whatever it is the whole refinancing process
- 33:57because it's no longer you know it's or it's
- 34:00not a secret we were knocking on death's door
- 34:04there for for six or eight months that took a
- 34:10lot That was the biggest challenge, I think.
- 34:14The next biggest challenge is getting to brewers
- 34:19without certain proprietary genetics that are
- 34:24in high demand. And without the ability to create
- 34:28certain downstream products and all of that sort
- 34:31of stuff. You know, it felt like the deck was
- 34:33stacked against us. And yet, we've seemingly...
- 34:41Kind of found our stride and that's exciting.
- 34:46What else was a challenge? So those two were
- 34:50definitely professional challenges. What about
- 34:54a personal challenge that you didn't anticipate?
- 34:58And I'm going to challenge you to not say the
- 35:03time away from your family, because I know that
- 35:05that is a big one. You know, That's a funny question.
- 35:11Not funny. I think it's been both the biggest
- 35:18challenge and the biggest benefit I have is I
- 35:25think from a mental health standpoint, I've discovered
- 35:31a ton of stuff about myself while I'm here, which
- 35:35I'm very grateful. I'm grateful to have you.
- 35:38Um, cause there's been a lot of space to explore
- 35:42those things. And when you're working together,
- 35:44I mean, I've never worked this close with a single
- 35:46individual for a day in and day out, basically
- 35:50for 18 months, you saw things in me that I've
- 35:54had other people say that like, you know, have
- 35:59dug into and it's kind of contributed to a lot
- 36:04of personal growth, which I'm very grateful for.
- 36:07I don't think that would have happened when you're
- 36:10stretched in the way that we were. And I know
- 36:12you've been stretched even farther going through
- 36:16all the challenges of the apple industry, hop
- 36:18industry, blueberry industry on top of any personal
- 36:22things. But when you're stretched this far, things
- 36:27start coming out and then, but then having the
- 36:30space to, you know, explore those. Like I have
- 36:33my standing counselor meetings every week. Thursdays
- 36:37at 1 o 'clock. And that's been really good. So,
- 36:42yeah, it's both sides. It was an emotional drain
- 36:48that led to a bunch of growth and a bunch of
- 36:53balance. More balance. We're working on that.
- 36:57Working on the balance part. Yeah, do you think
- 37:00it'd be a fair statement to say that the process...
- 37:05Created more of a raw emotional state that allowed
- 37:11space for kind of like rebuilding, reprioritizing.
- 37:17Yeah. I think it made the lows lower and the
- 37:21highs higher. And then when you start kind of
- 37:25plotting all of that out, wait a second, there's
- 37:31more going on here. What about you? What? Any
- 37:37of those same questions. Got to layer down into
- 37:41my next question because that was kind of heavy
- 37:43and I don't want to just go right into my...
- 37:47You can go right into the other one. Unless you
- 37:49want me to answer those. Well, I kind of do.
- 37:52I think our listeners deserve to know. I can
- 37:56answer them quick and then you can... Well, you
- 37:59can't really answer the would you have come here
- 38:02question. No, I'm here. But, yeah, what about
- 38:06you from a personal standpoint? Challenges? You
- 38:14want me to answer what are my biggest challenges?
- 38:15Mm -hmm. I mean, there was a minute there, and
- 38:23I think you saw the depths that I went to where,
- 38:30I mean. Not to sound too corny, but the entirety
- 38:36of my past and future had to be dug into in a
- 38:40very rapid way in order to have the clarity and
- 38:49commitment needed to turn things around as quickly
- 38:53as they needed to be. So I think the total duration,
- 38:59I think, was more of a drain. than i anticipated
- 39:04more it had more to do with the fact that i had
- 39:09to strip away anything that had to do about me
- 39:12in life for the better part of two years like
- 39:16no rock climbing no kind of personal space um
- 39:23and so all of my available energy got divided
- 39:27up between work and family and heavily weighted
- 39:34to work because i knew that's what it was going
- 39:37to take and so i had to mentally kind of like
- 39:42look at all of that as i was being torn down
- 39:46to shreds um and just kind of come up with with
- 39:50a game plan so so i don't know if anything that
- 39:55transpired was a surprise i think the even though
- 39:59i And oddly enough, when I was sitting there,
- 40:03you know, probably right about the time you –
- 40:05well, I always want to say, like, when you came
- 40:08to work for us, but it's, like, much more than
- 40:10that. So it's, like, when we partnered up sounds
- 40:12more accurate. So, like, when we partnered up,
- 40:15I had to – I just had to kind of, like, come
- 40:24up with a game plan to maintain my mental stability,
- 40:26right? And so I remember even just sitting there
- 40:29and being like, well, how long is this going
- 40:30to take? And I was like, oh, it's probably gonna
- 40:32take three years. And so it's like, I had from
- 40:35day one, mentally committed to a three -year
- 40:38process. Um, and it's funny because some people
- 40:42would ask me like, well, how long do you think
- 40:43this is going to be going on for? I was like,
- 40:44about three years. Like, I would just say it
- 40:46like about three years and they'd be like, what?
- 40:49And so, so like I'd committed to this three -year
- 40:53timeline. So it's like the, but the, the. The
- 40:57cumulative or the cumulative emotional drain
- 40:59was a bit surprising because I went into it thinking
- 41:03like, oh, I can do these endurance feats in life,
- 41:08mostly physical and to some degree emotional.
- 41:13But it was even stretching my ability to endure
- 41:16all of that. So that was kind of a surprise and
- 41:20challenge. Interesting. Now talking about, you
- 41:25know, mental. Preparing. So here you are. You're
- 41:33in Yosemite National Park. Yeah. You're psyched.
- 41:39Are you more scared starting the wall or within
- 41:45100 feet of the top? He's specifically talking
- 41:47about El Capitan. Like actually climbing it like
- 41:51what I did? Uh -huh. Hmm. I remember wanting
- 41:54to puke when I drove into the valley and saw
- 41:56the wall for the first time because I knew that's
- 41:59what I had to do. Did you ever talk about or
- 42:02think about backing out? No. No. Okay. And I
- 42:09had been to the valley before and done some other
- 42:11walls but hadn't done outcap. And so I think
- 42:14just all the pressure we put on ourselves, we
- 42:17only had about five days to do this thing that.
- 42:21you know has has a lot of variables um personal
- 42:24and external weather and whatnot and then we
- 42:28add another layer on top of it where it's we
- 42:30wanted to do it in a day which you know i mean
- 42:33people like you know the top athletes in the
- 42:36world i think the speed record is like three
- 42:38hours or something like that you know or two
- 42:40two hours or three hours but they're but they're
- 42:43they're the one percent of the one percent right
- 42:46and they And they're taking a lot more risk than
- 42:50we were willing to take. And so we had to balance
- 42:53out risk and reward. And so, I don't know, to
- 42:59not put unneeded pressure on ourselves, we just
- 43:02said, well, we're going to basically try our
- 43:05best. Sounds corny, but we're going to try our
- 43:06best. Here's our goal. We want to do it in a
- 43:08day, in a push. Did your hands hurt? I started
- 43:12cramping up about halfway. That didn't really
- 43:15leave me feeling very good. because i know we
- 43:18had a lot of ground to cover no my hands didn't
- 43:21hurt usually it's your feet that can start hurting
- 43:23more so than your your hands we're alternating
- 43:26between climbing shoes and um approach shoes
- 43:30or just tennis shoe type shoe oh i'm trying to
- 43:35think in that whole process like where was i
- 43:36nervous um i was nervous driving in the valley
- 43:40and looking at the objective for the first time
- 43:42i was nervous one but i started cramping up about
- 43:47halfway up the wall and then i just had to readjust
- 43:50my pace and then i was like faster or slower
- 43:55slower just so and sometimes it's not like materially
- 43:58slower it's just like you gotta like there's
- 44:00like you know you have like a rev limiter and
- 44:03if you like try and like push beyond the rev
- 44:06limiter too often then you're gonna you're just
- 44:09gonna burn out but you can run up to the rev
- 44:11limiter and slightly below it for a much longer
- 44:13period of time but there's always this line so
- 44:15you got to figure out where that's at and then
- 44:19i mentally was nervous it was like at night and
- 44:22there's this um there's a lot going on we'd always
- 44:26we'd already been on the wall moving and like
- 44:30in that zone you know that high intensity zone
- 44:34for i don't know what it had been at that point
- 44:37you know 13 hours 12 hours something like that
- 44:41and there's uh there's this there's this um there's
- 44:45this pitch or section of rock up on the upper
- 44:47part of the wall and it was at night um it was
- 44:50my my partner's block so he was leading that
- 44:55pitch and i had to follow it up on these jumars
- 44:58or ascenders and uh and we were It's called Camp
- 45:045, and so we were on this ledge system where
- 45:07there was this other party. They had been on
- 45:08the wall for four days. They were mentally burnt
- 45:10out. They had tried to lead this pitch, and they
- 45:15couldn't figure out how to do it. They were just
- 45:17fried at the end of the day, and so they left
- 45:20like... Wait, is there a place to get water on
- 45:21their way up? No, that's one of the challenges
- 45:23is that if you're doing it like this... This
- 45:28party was, and a lot of people do over multiple
- 45:30days, you haul all your water up the wall. So
- 45:33you have to commit to like hauling these very
- 45:35heavy loads up the wall to support yourself.
- 45:38But if you don't want to do that, we didn't want
- 45:40to do that. Then you have to do it. You have
- 45:42to be self -sufficient. And so like we ended
- 45:45up moving physically for about 20 ish hours.
- 45:52And we had cameras, three or four liters of water.
- 45:57Total? Total. Between the two of you? Each. Then
- 46:02we tried to get a quarter of that down or liter
- 46:10down before we were very far up the wall so we
- 46:14weren't carrying that weight. Basically, for
- 46:15the majority of the wall, we had three liters
- 46:17of water. That's the heaviest thing that you're
- 46:24carrying is water. besides yourself yeah so anyway
- 46:30there's this moment up on the upper wall where
- 46:32i just was i i was getting mentally fried from
- 46:36like being in that zone for so long and i was
- 46:39watching this rope like kind of saw on this edge
- 46:41where um there was like somebody put duct tape
- 46:44over the edge of the rock to try and like make
- 46:46it less abrasive um because it was a common spot
- 46:50where a rope would would kind of saw against
- 46:52the rock oh that gives me the willies so i'm
- 46:55like two thousand some feet up the air up in
- 46:57the air you know on the wall you know over two
- 47:00thousand feet above the ground in the middle
- 47:03of the night after moving for whatever you know
- 47:0613 hours let's just say being in the zone for
- 47:0913 hours and i'm following this thing with a
- 47:12headlamp pitch dark everywhere And just looking
- 47:16at this rope, like sawing, like see sign as I
- 47:19would like ascend it up, like see or sign on
- 47:21the corner of this rock. My skin is crawling
- 47:24right now. So that that section was like the
- 47:29most tense because like we were both kind of
- 47:31fried. And then like normally, like as I would
- 47:33be climbing the pitch and following, I'd be racking
- 47:37gear in the exact order that my leader would
- 47:40need it in so that the transfers are really quick.
- 47:43And but in that case, I was just like so fried.
- 47:45I wanted to get up to him as fast as possible
- 47:48and just get out of that situation. I was like
- 47:49throwing gear on my like, you know, harness and
- 47:52my my gear loop. And then when I got to him,
- 47:56he had to reorganize it. And he was in this really
- 47:58bad position, like hanging out on this very small
- 48:00piece of gear under like this roof overhang and
- 48:03wanted to get out of where he was at. And so
- 48:05I had to switch the gear over to him and he had
- 48:07to like be in this uncomfortable position, switching
- 48:10everything back out. And we had this very quick
- 48:12exchange. Like it was like heated for like 10
- 48:16seconds. Cause he was, he was angry that I didn't
- 48:19organize it right. And I was just like angry
- 48:21that, that I was in that situation. And anyway,
- 48:26so does the top of it, like, is it like an abrupt,
- 48:31like, okay, I'm to the top here. Or is it like
- 48:34a, Like it slowly like rounds out or something.
- 48:38Uh, it's a little bit of both, but it's more
- 48:39abrupt than it is round. So it's like, you kind
- 48:42of like pull up over the top or there's these
- 48:46certain exit points. And then you kind of have
- 48:48like, I don't know what it would be like, you
- 48:50know, 20, 30 yards to kind of like this tree
- 48:54that you tag and that's where you stop your watch.
- 48:57So, I mean, we were, we were doing that, like
- 48:59where, even though we weren't going to set any
- 49:02climbing records, like we wanted to, do we wanted
- 49:05to play the game and so we started the clock
- 49:08at the right spot on the ground and we started
- 49:09to we stopped the clock at the tree when we both
- 49:12touched the tree at the top so anyway and then
- 49:16we had to like it was you know four in the morning
- 49:18or three in the morning or something when we
- 49:20topped out and so because we were trying to go
- 49:22light we only had one pair of approach shoes
- 49:25one puffy jacket And so we had to kind of wait
- 49:30it out for a couple hours until the sun rose
- 49:32to figure out how to hike down. And so we found
- 49:35this boulder and kind of curled up underneath
- 49:38it. And then when one person would wake up shivering,
- 49:42then you'd tap the other person, you'd switch
- 49:45jackets, and you'd just keep doing that until
- 49:47the sun came up. Oh, my gosh. Andy, I got a couple
- 49:55of interview questions for you that I'd like
- 49:58you to touch on here. Tell me about the most
- 50:02dangerous thing that you've ever done. Tell our
- 50:05listeners. What did you ask for for Christmas
- 50:10and did you get it? And what is the funniest
- 50:19story that you have with your siblings and parents?
- 50:25Love it. Share that with our listeners on your
- 50:28outro. Is it my turn? I thought it'd be fun to
- 50:32do some 2026 predictions. Okay. What are your
- 50:38market predictions for 2026? Broad, and then
- 50:42I have three varietals that I'm going to ask
- 50:45you about. I think the market is going to, on
- 50:48a Roma side, I think it's going to level out,
- 50:50probably get a little bit tight. But then I think
- 50:55farms that are going to have to sell land or
- 50:59potentially hopefully not go out of business
- 51:01are going to be picked up by somebody else with
- 51:04a path to market. And I don't think there's going
- 51:10to be a massive rebound or price spike because
- 51:16there's so much capacity. I think you're going
- 51:21to continue to see market share swings. Mostly
- 51:24in the direction of Roy Farms? I don't really
- 51:28think that. I think we'll continue to hold our
- 51:30own. Yeah, let's dig into that Roy Farms aside
- 51:32for a second because one of the things that came
- 51:38up recently before the holiday season was that
- 51:42meeting that happened in Yakima around the bail
- 51:48reports that... that got released out to certain
- 51:52individuals in the industry because all the information
- 51:57that goes to the state lab technically can be
- 52:02released via, is it public disclosure? And so
- 52:08that information was asked for via, was it the
- 52:15Public Disclosure Act? Freedom of Information
- 52:18Act. Freedom of Information Act. so that information
- 52:20was queried based off of that and then distributed
- 52:24out to the individuals that asked for it and
- 52:27so once it was actually released by the state
- 52:33it became you know i mean kind of like public
- 52:37knowledge or if you wanted it you could just
- 52:39get it there's a file you could download and
- 52:42sort and so when you look down through that there's
- 52:47been some materially some material changes in
- 52:50market share already and i don't think that that
- 52:54kind of market reset is is done what it appears
- 53:01to me right now is that grower owned and or grower
- 53:10direct companies are seemingly gaining the most
- 53:17market share right now And I'm not exactly sure
- 53:22why that is. I know where we've been successful,
- 53:27I think, is, and I imagine everybody, we don't
- 53:32spend a lot of time paying any attention to our
- 53:34competition, right, wrong, or indifferent. Yeah,
- 53:38I mean, you could argue it both ways. I mean,
- 53:39sometimes I think we should pay more attention.
- 53:42That's not necessarily who we are at our core.
- 53:44And at other times, yeah, we just don't. It's
- 53:49kind of like the, if our message is, you know,
- 53:53transparency and, you know, fair prices that
- 53:58works for us and trying to do what's best for
- 54:02brewers, flexibility, all of that sort of stuff.
- 54:07I mean, that's kind of our business model and
- 54:10it obviously has strengths and weaknesses, but
- 54:14that's what we do. But, you know, seemingly,
- 54:17if you can look at that report, yeah, it's grower,
- 54:23grower direct, grower owned are growing. And
- 54:26I don't want to opine on why because I don't
- 54:31know. Like I said, we don't spend much time paying
- 54:33attention to it. And a lot of these aren't, it's
- 54:35not really competition. We're suppliers to them.
- 54:38It just. It could be something as simple as inventory
- 54:42that already exists, and that's why more hops
- 54:44weren't brought in. We have no idea. I think
- 54:47you could trend it out if you had enough years
- 54:50of data points, but I don't know. It's hard to
- 54:52say. All right. Quick rapid fire. Market predictions
- 54:56for 2026 Cascade. It's going to keep moving.
- 55:03Keep moving as in? It's going to continually.
- 55:07move in large volumes, and it's mostly going
- 55:09to be spot. Spot domestic, spot international?
- 55:14Gosh, there's a lot of international spot. Both.
- 55:19Heavily weighted international question? No.
- 55:22I think there's still a ton of spot buying going
- 55:24on in the U .S. too. Okay. So continue to move,
- 55:27acreage is going to stay flat? I doubt it will
- 55:32in the U .S. You think the acreage is going to
- 55:34go down or up? Up. Okay. Citra? Up. The acreage
- 55:41is going to go up next year. Inventory has been
- 55:43worked out of the system. I think so. Okay. Zaka?
- 55:48Level. Adina? Up. Volume will go up because there's
- 55:55a bunch of babies in the ground. Acres probably
- 55:57won't go up. Demand's going up. Yes, for sure.
- 56:03For sure. Let's see. Chinook. I'm never making
- 56:12a prediction on that variety. I know. That one's
- 56:14probably the hardest. Roy Farms. Love it. I'm
- 56:25asking you. Acreage. Oh, for us? Down, level,
- 56:29or up? Up. I can pretty confidently say that's
- 56:34true. Centennial. Let's round out the Cs. I got
- 56:41one more. Flat. Flat. So, public, new publics,
- 56:51Thora, Vera, Vista. Up. On all three. And is
- 57:01that because we're seeing a... renewed interest
- 57:06in publics yes i think there's a very very high
- 57:11level of interest in that did i miss any i mean
- 57:15those are kind of the main three thora vista
- 57:18vera um but then again i bet you the growth of
- 57:22those is trumped by the growth of new proprietary
- 57:27helps that are going to be up i mean that's a
- 57:30good topic probably in and of itself that we
- 57:33don't have time to dive into but generally speaking
- 57:35do you see um i mean the hot breeding company
- 57:41is seeing an increase in crushed dulceta talus
- 57:46talus citra well i mean yeah citrus probably
- 57:49more of an inventory deal than it is a demand
- 57:51where the other where the crushed dulceta and
- 57:54talus's demand increase um all right so we're
- 57:58going to see an increase there decrease in mosaic
- 58:01i think so yeah at least that's the signals we
- 58:04saw yeah and then uh latitude 46 got a bunch
- 58:08of numbered varieties we've talked about azaka
- 58:10being flat adena being up in demand um we don't
- 58:14know on the other ones but with the upcoming
- 58:17hop experience is we'll see um more insight there
- 58:23but I guess we were assuming right now based
- 58:25off interest that we'll see a increase in demand
- 58:28on those varieties. Yes, for sure. So when you
- 58:31look at all of that, then if you're going to
- 58:32see an increase in demand on HBC is an increase
- 58:35in demand on latitude 46, which is not, you know,
- 58:38material volume yet in the market, but it is
- 58:40an increased demand and increased demanded publics.
- 58:44Then is that cannibalizing something else in
- 58:48the market? No, no. No, I just think that our
- 58:52inventories ran down low enough that we're leveling
- 58:56back off to actual demand. Okay. Yeah, do you
- 59:03have any last questions? Prediction next year,
- 59:11water supply. Well, you know, as we were talking
- 59:16the other day. I kind of think about these three
- 59:19major boxes that need to be checked before I
- 59:22feel really good about next year or even just
- 59:26good. And that is reservoir levels, existing
- 59:32reservoir levels as we go into the spring. Snowpack.
- 59:37Yep. And preferably snowpack that's not going
- 59:40to flash off, you know, in the spring. It's going
- 59:45to last. melt off at a predictable rate into
- 59:49the summer and then there is a whole issue happening
- 59:56right now or that has happened for the last couple
- 59:58years as we've been in this drought scenario
- 1:00:00where some of the governmental agencies have
- 1:00:04been using standard release protocols for the
- 1:00:08reservoirs and they probably should be using
- 1:00:13alternative calculations to reduce the overall
- 1:00:17flows or at a very you know at a minimum time
- 1:00:23them more appropriately and so i think all those
- 1:00:26things need to happen going into next year currently
- 1:00:29our reservoirs are sitting at kind of march levels
- 1:00:34already which is good um the snowpack is yet
- 1:00:39to be seen and i do know that there is legal
- 1:00:43action already happening with the governmental
- 1:00:47agencies so that hopefully they do use that alternative
- 1:00:53math. So prediction for next year, we're still
- 1:00:58going to be in a drought situation as an industry,
- 1:01:02but I anticipate it being better than last year,
- 1:01:07but we're still going to be in a drought scenario
- 1:01:09unless we just get a crazy snowpack. Come on.
- 1:01:13Yep. Come on. Yep. I think just one last thing.
- 1:01:18We got a couple upcoming things. We have the
- 1:01:22hop experience that we're doing in conjunction
- 1:01:26with Crosby Hops down in San Diego on January
- 1:01:3113th. We got another one that is going to be
- 1:01:35happening in Austin at Pint House February 20th,
- 1:01:40I think is what. what andy told me andy you can
- 1:01:44correct that um and you're going to talk a little
- 1:01:47bit more about that at the outro crosby and roy
- 1:01:51will be having some joint exposure at cbc this
- 1:01:56year so come by the booth and look at the latitude
- 1:02:0146 and the crosby breeding program collaboration
- 1:02:05along with roy farms and crosby hops yeah and
- 1:02:10then uh i think as we look into next year we're
- 1:02:13going to be trying to do some more of these on
- 1:02:16the road so i think teddy from society is going
- 1:02:23to be our first on the road at the january hop
- 1:02:26experience down in san diego so we'll see how
- 1:02:29that goes and if that goes well then um anyone
- 1:02:34wants to be on the podcast reach out to Roy Farms,
- 1:02:38info at Roy Farms. That'd be the best one, or
- 1:02:41Elizabeth at RoyFarms .com. Probably Elizabeth
- 1:02:44at Roy Farms. Oh, Liz. Liz Roy at Roy Farms.
- 1:02:47LizRoy at RoyFarms .com. Reach out to LizRoy
- 1:02:49at RoyFarms .com if you have any topic ideas
- 1:02:52or you want us to do some remote recording. Thanks,
- 1:02:59Drew. Thanks, Liz. Thanks for the cocktails.
- 1:03:02Those were delicious. They sure were. Got two
- 1:03:05more ideas. You do? For cocktails or for? I did
- 1:03:09some research on beer pairing cocktails. Love
- 1:03:12it. I'm looking forward to that. Okay. All right.
- 1:03:17No dirt, no flowers. End of season. Come on,
- 1:03:2126. Hello, everyone. Andy Roy here. Yeah, let's
- 1:03:26dig into the questions Drew asked me. First up,
- 1:03:29the most dangerous thing that I have done. Well,
- 1:03:34I'm pretty risk adverse. As Mike and I always
- 1:03:38say, he's the gas, I'm the brakes. So I don't
- 1:03:42think I've done anything super dangerous. Probably
- 1:03:46the most dangerous thing I did was go on the
- 1:03:48Camino de Santiago walk with my father this last
- 1:03:52year. Not because it was dangerous to go on the
- 1:03:55walk, it's just we could have killed each other
- 1:03:57from getting on each other's nerves. But it was
- 1:03:59a wonderful time, so that wasn't dangerous at
- 1:04:01all. Um, probably just some stupid stuff I did
- 1:04:05when I was a kid. You know, partying and hanging
- 1:04:09out with people. That's about it. Second question.
- 1:04:12What did I ask for Christmas and did I get it?
- 1:04:16Well, I'd probably say that the altruistic, you
- 1:04:21know, thinking of others answer is, you know,
- 1:04:25hopefully spending time with my family, loved
- 1:04:29ones, hoping everyone on the farm. got to spend
- 1:04:32time with their loved ones and hoping for the
- 1:04:36best for all of our brewer partners to you know
- 1:04:39have productive years and hope they had a productive
- 1:04:40year but in actuality is probably i wanted a
- 1:04:44game boy lego set and uh yes i did get that so
- 1:04:49and then the last question funniest story i have
- 1:04:54with my siblings and parents honestly there's
- 1:04:58been way too many you know we get on each other's
- 1:05:01nerves a lot but we also have fun a lot there's
- 1:05:05a lot of them like one where probably i was oh
- 1:05:0810 maybe 12 and liz sucker punched me and laid
- 1:05:14me out in a grocery store in cannon beach because
- 1:05:17i lied about something and then on the way walking
- 1:05:20back to where we were staying i sucker punched
- 1:05:23her back and gave her a black eye then My dad
- 1:05:28pulled us outside and, you know, asked who started
- 1:05:31it, and I said that she did, and I was lying.
- 1:05:34And she freaked out and started to, like, try
- 1:05:37and wail on me. My dad picked her up by her overalls,
- 1:05:39and she was just, like, windmilling, trying to
- 1:05:40hit me. Well, that was pretty funny. And then
- 1:05:42also, like, you know, that sweet spot with the
- 1:05:46parents and the kids where we were, like, in
- 1:05:47our early 20s and there and there. probably mid
- 1:05:51late 50s and where we were just kind of just
- 1:05:54enjoying you know drinking wine together hanging
- 1:05:56out it was a fun time i mean honestly there's
- 1:05:59been way too many and yeah very fortunate and
- 1:06:05that that sums up my answers and i would like
- 1:06:09to remind our listeners that if anybody's in
- 1:06:11southern california san diego on january 13th
- 1:06:15we'll be having our first hop experience with
- 1:06:19Crosby Hops at Society Brewing starting at 5
- 1:06:22p .m. It's going to be a very fun experience
- 1:06:24and fun event and we have a lot of great brewers
- 1:06:27making awesome beers that will showcase new exciting
- 1:06:30hops from both Latitude 46 and the Crosby Hop
- 1:06:33Breeding Program. And we'll also be following
- 1:06:35that up with another hop experience in Austin,
- 1:06:38Texas on February 20th at Pint House Brewing.
- 1:06:42So that's just the start of the fun things we
- 1:06:44have in store for 2026 and look forward to seeing
- 1:06:47you all and have a happy new year.
