- 0:00With summer coming up, we're entering my favorite season of
- 0:03all, Margarita season. I love a classic.
- 0:06Refreshing Margarita on a hot summer's day to enjoy at
- 0:09barbecues, picnics and on weekend getaways for the perfect
- 0:12marg. I use Jose Cuervo.
- 0:15The world's number one tequila brand.
- 0:17A big thank. You to Jose Cuervo.
- 0:19For continuing to support the pod and helping us to produce
- 0:21content for all of you. Time to embrace Margarita season
- 0:25with Jose Cuervo and remember to drink responsibly.
- 0:29On N5, 202426 year old Nick Fuentes tweeted something that
- 0:34he would certainly later regret. Shortly after the US
- 0:38presidential election results. Nick.
- 0:40Who is a FAR? Right Commentator posted a
- 0:43disgusting. Phrase to his over. 400,000
- 0:47followers on X quote your body my.
- 0:50Choice forever. This tweet inverted.
- 0:53The pro-choice. Slogan of my body my.
- 0:55Choice to attack. Women's reproductive.
- 0:58Rights. The backlash was intended and
- 1:00the consequences were. Somewhat to be expected.
- 1:04In retaliation, women across the Internet doxed Nick, sharing his
- 1:08personal information, including where he lives online, with one
- 1:12woman even going so far. As to show up to his.
- 1:15Home to confront him. The doxing of Nick Fuentes.
- 1:18Has brought forth. New discussions about the
- 1:20complexities. Of this.
- 1:21Practice. Though generally used to harass
- 1:24marginalized groups online, many saw this instance of doxing as
- 1:28different. In the wake of Trump's election,
- 1:31so many human rights are on the line, and defenders argue that
- 1:35doxing Nick was a warning to American men that women are not
- 1:38backing down. Without a fight this.
- 1:41Is an exploration into the ethics and the normalization of
- 1:45doxing. Why users across the?
- 1:47Internet have come to use doxing as a form of protest and how the
- 1:51culture on TikTok in particular has challenged our conventional.
- 1:54View of this practice. Altogether, ultimately leaving
- 1:58us with one question. Is it?
- 2:00Ever OK to dock? Someone from Centennial World.
- 2:04I'm Lauren Meisner and this is infinite.
- 2:07Scroll a podcast. About Internet culture, the
- 2:09creator economy and how social media is shaping Gen.
- 2:12Z welcome back to infinite scroll everyone after a.
- 2:17Light week last week where we. Talked about some.
- 2:20Petty YouTube. Drama I am bringing.
- 2:22You guys a bit of a heavier meteor episode today, so I hope
- 2:27that you guys enjoy. This, I think it's, it's very
- 2:30timely and I think it's a topic that is not often discussed in
- 2:34kind of like. The pop culture.
- 2:35Realm. But you know, we like to.
- 2:36Go. Deep here we try and I think
- 2:40that doxing, the normalization of doxing, is it ever.
- 2:43OK to dock. Someone These are things that
- 2:45are going to keep getting brought to the forefront,
- 2:48especially as Internet culture evolves.
- 2:50These are big. Topics, Big questions that are
- 2:54important to be considering when we basically all live our lives
- 2:57online and TikTok in particular has changed culture as I just
- 3:01mentioned so much. OK, before I get into the
- 3:03reviews I needed to address something I keep getting
- 3:07comments specifically on. YouTube about our Jose Cuervo
- 3:11sponsorship. People keep making jokes or like
- 3:13questioning what I mean by saying like we're going into
- 3:16summer. So for anyone that does not know
- 3:19the lore behind Centennial and myself, I own Centennial World.
- 3:23So I own the media company that runs this podcast.
- 3:27I am Canadian, but I live in Australia and I've lived here
- 3:30for almost 10 years and our company is based in Australia.
- 3:34So we are going into summer in Australia and we are sponsored.
- 3:37By Jose Cuervo. Australia, all right.
- 3:40So as always, please. Remember to rate.
- 3:42Review and subscribe, it helps us.
- 3:43So much it helps. Us grow, please.
- 3:46Rate US on Spotify. We are trying to get our Spotify
- 3:47ratings up. Also, I've had some feedback
- 3:49that there are. Too many programmatic ads now.
- 3:52So basically we got. Programmatic ads turned on on.
- 3:55Spotify for creators we. Changed posting platforms I
- 3:58figured. Out how to fix that, so that's
- 4:01not to say. That there will never be any
- 4:02programmatic ads. I definitely want some
- 4:04programmatic ads that. Helps us a lot.
- 4:06Like the ad revenue from those programmatic ads?
- 4:08Definitely. Helps us keep this.
- 4:09Going especially. With five episodes a week for
- 4:12you guys, but I am very aware. That having like constant ads in
- 4:16the middle, especially in the deep.
- 4:17Dives which are already. Sponsored right now is annoying
- 4:20so I have figured out I think. How to kind of?
- 4:22Place them more strategically or turn them off.
- 4:24Also, please sign up to our newsletter called Infinite
- 4:27Scroll. On Fridays, we round up the five
- 4:29biggest thing pieces on the Internet from that week.
- 4:31All right, I have 3 reviews to read.
- 4:33For you guys, they're from YouTube.
- 4:35Sarah Pace sings, writes Lauren. I'm fairly new here but I just
- 4:38wanted to say I. Really like your vibe.
- 4:40I've had to. Dig here in YouTube to find
- 4:43podcasters that I like and I'm glad I found your channel.
- 4:45Take care. Thank you.
- 4:47I'm loving when you guys tell us how you found us.
- 4:49I think I. Requested that last week or the
- 4:51week. Before and it's so helpful to
- 4:52know. Sophia, EC260.
- 4:55Seven says I must say I. Absolutely love this podcast.
- 4:59This is random but I love how you say Centennial World and Jen
- 5:02said in that specific way each time.
- 5:04It's so satisfying for my ADHD lol.
- 5:06Oh my God thank you. I get comments all the time on
- 5:10mini scroll. About how I say.
- 5:11Centennial World and that you. Guys like say it.
- 5:13With me in that like sing song voice I also find this.
- 5:17So helpful for work. I work in social media and even
- 5:19if I left. My job I'd still.
- 5:21Listen because you're so insightful and informative and I
- 5:23always love hearing your. Takes.
- 5:25Thank you. And then Kim.
- 5:27PS4 EQ says discovery. Heard you a couple months ago
- 5:31from it being recommended. During your cottage core era, I
- 5:33just. Loved the concept, I love
- 5:35Internet lore and I loved it being quickly explained and I
- 5:38love your takes on. Things as the reviews you read
- 5:40off are so true. You're so.
- 5:42Talented. The quality of the content is
- 5:44top tier. I listen when I drive home from
- 5:45work. It takes me about 15 minutes, so
- 5:47it's perfect. Thank you.
- 5:48That is so sweet. I assume that's about mini
- 5:50scroll being 15 minutes. You guys are so.
- 5:52Sweet, thank you. Ever since we've existed in the
- 5:59online world, privacy has been a top concern.
- 6:03From parents warning kids about stranger danger on sites like
- 6:06Omegle to locking down Instagram accounts, keeping details
- 6:09private has always mattered. And though we are now spending
- 6:13more time online than ever before, it seems like the
- 6:15sanctity around privacy has waned.
- 6:18That doesn't mean we don't care about privacy.
- 6:21Gen. Z, for instance, is known for
- 6:23being more restrained online, often posting less on platforms
- 6:26compared to millennials. Where as we get.
- 6:29Used to social media giants tracking our data and gain a
- 6:32deeper understanding of the online world, many of us now see
- 6:35privacy as an illusion and whether that's.
- 6:38Actually true. It's affecting how users treat
- 6:41one another online. Take doxing, for example.
- 6:44Now, if you've been online long enough, you would have
- 6:47definitely heard the term, But if you haven't.
- 6:49Associate Professor. Carmen Lee explains the
- 6:52phenomenon in a journal article, saying quote doxing is a form of
- 6:55digital abuse where someone intentionally sees out and.
- 6:58Shares a target's. Personal information without
- 7:01consent. This type of private information
- 7:03could include anything from their address and full name.
- 7:07To their place of work. The term dates back to the
- 7:091990s. Hacker culture.
- 7:11Where doxing was shorthand for dropping documents, it began as
- 7:15a tactic. To expose, harass or discredit
- 7:18people. By revealing private details,
- 7:20often to intimidate or pressure them.
- 7:22Used initially to deanonymize online figures, doxing became a
- 7:26tool for harassment and even extort.
- 7:28While this may have started in hacker communities and circles,
- 7:31it has become increasingly common across the digital
- 7:34landscape. Associate Professor Lee offers
- 7:37her explanation as to why in her journal article.
- 7:40Doxing as discursive. Action in a social movement
- 7:43writing quote as society becomes increasingly mediatized 1 does
- 7:48not need to be a hacker to retrieve and share information
- 7:51of another person as soon as someone posts content onto their
- 7:54social media profile, whether it is intended to be shared.
- 7:57Privately or publicly, they are already.
- 7:59Prone to exposing themselves to an unknown audience because of
- 8:03the context collapse of social media, IE the collapse of
- 8:07infinite possible contexts into one with an infinitely ambiguous
- 8:11audience. That being said, doxing really
- 8:14entered the mainstream in 2014 through the Gamergate
- 8:18controversy. Now we covered Gamergate in our.
- 8:21Series Let the Girls. Game earlier this year.
- 8:23Specifically, the episode with game studies experts Dr. Malian
- 8:27Butt and Doctor Lucy. Sparrow, so feel free to check
- 8:30out that episode. To learn more.
- 8:32But for those unfamiliar, Gamergate was essentially a
- 8:35massive harassment campaign in 2014 that targeted women who
- 8:39spoke out against misogyny and gaming.
- 8:41Many prominent women in the industry faced relentless abuse
- 8:45and threats, some so severe that the FBI got involved.
- 8:49It all started when indie game developer Zoe Quinn released a
- 8:52game called Depression Quest. Soon after, an ex-boyfriend of
- 8:56Zoe posted a lengthy invasion. Blog.
- 8:58Accusing her of cheating with several men in the gaming.
- 9:01Industry allegedly to. Boost her career and let it be
- 9:05known. That this post is still
- 9:07available to read. Online, one of those men was
- 9:10allegedly. A writer for Kotaku.
- 9:12A major gaming publication named Nathan.
- 9:15Although both Zoe and Nathan denied the accusations, waves of
- 9:19gamers swarmed Twitter, Reddit, and 4 Chan, claiming this was an
- 9:23quote ethical breach in gaming journalism.
- 9:26While the Gamergaters claimed they were Van regards of ethical
- 9:29games journalism, fighting to expose corruption by any means
- 9:33necessary, their actions were ultimately pure harassment.
- 9:37In a piece for Time from 2017, Zoe reflected on Gamergate, how
- 9:41it changed her life, and what exactly the Gamergaters.
- 9:44Did to her. Quote I had been hacked and
- 9:47someone was in control of my account, broadcasting whatever
- 9:50they felt like to my 17,000 Twitter followers.
- 9:52As well as to all the creeps. Who had been manually lurking me
- 9:56on my. Page she writes the hackers.
- 9:58Weren't just posting calls for me to die or talking about what
- 10:01a. Fat slut I was.
- 10:02They were sharing my personal information, my old address in
- 10:05Canada, cell phone numbers from a few years back, my current
- 10:09cell phone number and my current home address a decade.
- 10:12Later, the effects of. Gamergate linger Many prominent
- 10:15women in gaming are still wary of addressing it openly, and
- 10:18many publications warned that the industry may be facing a
- 10:22Gamergate 2 point O. This time, the focus is on Sweet
- 10:25Baby Inc, a narrative development company.
- 10:28Accused by critics. Of pushing a quote UN quote woke
- 10:31agenda in gaming quote. This time, instead of assembling
- 10:35under the false banner of ethics and journalism, this new
- 10:38campaign has chosen woke, ISM and sweet.
- 10:40Baby as the focus of their grievances, writes Ash Parish
- 10:44for The Verge. The result?
- 10:45Has been a wave of bigoted harassment targeting
- 10:48marginalized developers, journalists and gamers, with
- 10:51doxing becoming increasingly mainstream during Gamergate.
- 10:54It isn't. Exactly surprising that.
- 10:57This practice would really. Blow up among gamers and
- 10:59streamers, particularly those on Twitch.
- 11:03Recently, Twitch has. Seen a rise in cases where
- 11:05streamers are doxed and then swatted.
- 11:07A double hit of. Harassment as we've.
- 11:10Established doxing reveals. Private info like home addresses
- 11:13while swatting. Takes it further, trolls.
- 11:16Use that information to call in fake emergencies, sending police
- 11:20to a streamer's home while they are on live stream.
- 11:23Aside from leaving its victims shaken, doxing and swatting can
- 11:26affect streamers in more than one recorded live streams of
- 11:30police swattings show how traumatic and dangerous the
- 11:33experience can be. Squads of armed.
- 11:36Police officers are recorded. Busting into rooms, pointing
- 11:39their weapons at streamers. While the creator is obviously
- 11:42caught off guard. The stream is usually.
- 11:44Stopped, followed by a tweet. From the streamer telling their
- 11:46fans that everything is OK and that the police had responded to
- 11:49a prank call. However, not every swatting
- 11:52prank has ended harmlessly. As was the case.
- 11:54When an innocent man was. Tragically shot by police.
- 11:58Responding to a prank call after an argument between gamers
- 12:01playing Call of Duty. World War 2.
- 12:03In 2017, being harassed in such an extreme way, swatting
- 12:07presents a real danger to streamers personal safety, not
- 12:10to mention the. Psychological Impacts.
- 12:12For instance, many streamers have said they no longer feel
- 12:15safe in their own homes, knowing that their addresses have been
- 12:18leaked. This has forced many streamers
- 12:20to relocate themselves and their families, no doubt creating a
- 12:24financial burden, and some streamers have been forced to
- 12:26find work outside of full time streaming altogether.
- 12:29In June 2021, top streamer XQC revealed he had been forced to
- 12:34move back to his native Canada. After his address.
- 12:36Had been leaked and he was being swatted by police almost daily
- 12:41quote almost every day the police come to our.
- 12:43House with the full. Squad and I was genuinely scared
- 12:45that I was going to. Die, he shared.
- 12:47On a live stream, former streamer and drag queen.
- 12:50Jupiter, Velvet left. Full time streaming after being
- 12:53swatted in September 2021 and told NBC she was left with no
- 12:57choice but to find other work. To subsidize her lost.
- 13:00Income Jupiter's experience is reminiscent of other streamers.
- 13:03Associated with the LGBTQIA. Plus community, with many
- 13:07members being frequent targets of doxing and swatting.
- 13:10Drag Queens in particular, have borne the brunt of these cyber.
- 13:13Attacks. Through 2021 and 2022, for
- 13:16instance, six members of the drag queen streaming collective
- 13:19Stream Queens were swatted alongside queer people.
- 13:23Women are. Also at a greater.
- 13:24Risk of doxing In a journal article written by Assistant
- 13:28professor Stein Eckert and PhD candidate Jade Metzger Rifkin,
- 13:32the academics share that quote. Women are more.
- 13:35Likely to receive. Greater amounts of unwanted,
- 13:37vitriolic and sexualized messages to be the.
- 13:40Targets of. Cyber mobbing or brigading
- 13:43revenge porn nude leaked messages and receive unwanted
- 13:47sexualized items. This is especially concerning
- 13:50because doxing often happens alongside other forms of online
- 13:54harassment. With doxing and swatting
- 13:56affecting countless streamers, it's become a significant.
- 13:59Issue for Twitch. Amid mass employee redundancies
- 14:03and creator boycotts, it's one of the major challenges the
- 14:06platform faces, but probably the most directly threatening to
- 14:10creator safety. As a result.
- 14:12The platform has made a concerted effort to restrict
- 14:15doxing. For instance, it is obvious in
- 14:17Twitch's Community Guidelines that doxing and swatting are
- 14:20prohibited on the platform. As the Community Guidelines read
- 14:23quote, violence including doxing and swatting on Twitch is taken
- 14:27seriously and is considered a 0 tolerance violation, and all
- 14:31accounts associated with such activities on Twitch will be
- 14:34indefinitely suspended. Beyond this, the platform has
- 14:38even restricted sharing information that is.
- 14:40Available via the public record last.
- 14:42Year, according to Tube. Filter Twitch added a clause
- 14:45that allows the. Platform to take action against
- 14:47people it discovers. Have doxed or swatted.
- 14:49Someone in real life or on another part of the Internet.
- 14:53While Twitch has. Taken action in its community
- 14:55guidelines, the platform hasn't really managed to stop streamers
- 14:59from being doxed. Regulation has been difficult,
- 15:02reaffirming how hard it is to control this type of online
- 15:05harassment and prevent breaches of privacy online.
- 15:08With this being the case, doxing is unfortunately becoming
- 15:11common. Across other platforms.
- 15:14One of the most recent examples of a creator getting doxed and
- 15:17going extremely. Viral for it actually.
- 15:19Went down on Instagram and X it all started in.
- 15:23October of last year. When Sniper Wolf, whose real
- 15:26name is Leah Shalish, seemingly doxed YouTube Jack's films for
- 15:30contacts, Leah has become known for her reaction style videos on
- 15:34the platform Jack had been. Critical of Leah's.
- 15:36Reaction based content for months.
- 15:38He made videos. Alleging she steals content
- 15:41fails. To credit creators by.
- 15:43Blocking their usernames and even went on to create a second
- 15:46YouTube channel mocking Leah's content.
- 15:49Things came to a head when Jack claims that Leah doxed him.
- 15:52He shared a screenshot from her Instagram story.
- 15:54Where she asked her followers if she should visit.
- 15:57Jack mentioning saying that he lived just a few minutes from
- 16:00her shoot location. Sniper Wolf just docks me on IG.
- 16:04Creepy. Gross.
- 16:05Violating, Jack wrote on X. What you do is.
- 16:08Disgusting. You steal content and.
- 16:10Stalk Youtubers. Leah also shared a video.
- 16:13On her Instagram story. Outside Jack's.
- 16:15Home. She later defended her behavior,
- 16:17suggesting it was justified since Jack had consistently
- 16:21posted about her on his YouTube channels characterizing.
- 16:24It as obsessive behavior. Quote accusing me of doxing is
- 16:28defamation. I've no idea how to.
- 16:30Dox, Leah. Later wrote on her Instagram
- 16:32story. He literally posted.
- 16:34His address on Google and said I threatened him and.
- 16:36Doxed him after countless calls to the platform.
- 16:39Leah YouTube temporarily demonetized her content, meaning
- 16:43the creator couldn't make money from videos uploaded.
- 16:45To the Sniper wolf. Channel According to reporting
- 16:47at the time, Leah's main channel appeared to be demonetized.
- 16:51But her other? Channels remained unaffective.
- 16:53As a result. YouTube's attempt to address the
- 16:56situation were not well. Received.
- 16:58By many. Users they took.
- 17:00Issue with YouTube statement questioning why the platform
- 17:03only temporarily demonetized Sniper Wolf while attributing
- 17:06blame to both Leah and Jack for the situation.
- 17:09These users believe that. Influencers like Leah receive
- 17:12special treatment and favoritism because they bring significant
- 17:15audiences to the platform, something that is seemingly
- 17:18consistent across the social media landscape.
- 17:21Another notable example is when. Trisha Paytas was doxed on her
- 17:25snark Reddit R slash Trishy. Land established in October
- 17:292021. The Trishi Land subreddit
- 17:31started after Trisha's falling. Out with fellow creator.
- 17:34Ethan Klein As I'm sure we all remember, Trisha and Ethan Co
- 17:37hosted the frenemies. Podcast together before Trish
- 17:40left the. Show in mid 2021 over an.
- 17:43Alleged wage dispute while the subreddit started.
- 17:46As most in our communities. Do with users posting?
- 17:48News and speculation about Trisha and of course, the
- 17:51occasional sarcastic joke and meme.
- 17:53Trishi Land quickly descended into one of the.
- 17:56Most abusive subreddit. On the platform throughout 2022,
- 18:01Trishy Land engaged in vicious attacks against the creator,
- 18:04which only got. Worse after she.
- 18:05Got married and welcomed her first baby.
- 18:08In a YouTube video discussing the subreddit and how it
- 18:10ultimately was banned, Trisha reflected on some of the harmful
- 18:13actions of the community. She said the community posted
- 18:16incredibly personal information about herself and husband Moses
- 18:20Hackman, including which hospital she was planning to
- 18:23give birth at, her doctor's information, details about her
- 18:26family members and payment records.
- 18:28On her property taxes, Tricia. Also revealed that when she was
- 18:31undergoing fertility treatments, members of the subreddit called
- 18:35clinics around her area telling the facilities not to take
- 18:39Tricia and Moses as patients. Now, Tricia.
- 18:42Wasn't. The first nor the.
- 18:43Last. Person to be doxxed on Reddit.
- 18:46Another infamous example happened way back in 2014 during
- 18:50what would become known as the Fappening.
- 18:52We did touch on this event during our Reddit deep dive.
- 18:55Earlier this year. But it was essentially when
- 18:57Reddit users began and posting naked photos stolen from Apple
- 19:00iCloud accounts. It was even believed that some
- 19:03of these pictures may have constituted child pornography.
- 19:07Although these pictures. Originally appeared on 4 Chan, a
- 19:09subreddit. Called R slash the.
- 19:11Fappening became the primary hub for sharing them.
- 19:14Though the Fappening was not doxing in and of itself, some
- 19:18users did go on to. Docs those associated with the
- 19:21leak. Now.
- 19:23With all of these. Examples in mind.
- 19:25This leaves us with the. Question that I posed in the
- 19:27intro is doxing sometimes warranted?
- 19:31There is no denying that doxing is extremely dangerous,
- 19:34invasive, and in some instances, illegal.
- 19:37But many social media users can't help but wonder.
- 19:40If it's acceptable, especially. When the person who is being
- 19:43doxed did something wrong in the. 1st place of course.
- 19:46No one really deserves to have their privacy.
- 19:48Invaded or stripped, especially in a space as.
- 19:51Volatile as social media When information is shared on
- 19:53platforms like TikTok and Reddit, we have little control.
- 19:56Over who sees it? And how quickly it might spread
- 19:59with that context. Even if a.
- 20:01Doctor doesn't intend for millions of people to see
- 20:04someone's home address or their workplace.
- 20:06It can easily happen, but when it comes to problematic people
- 20:10and comments like the Nick Fuentes situation I mentioned in
- 20:13the intro, some users can't help but think that.
- 20:16This tit for tat. Strategy isn't all bad.
- 20:19Users across TikTok have already.
- 20:21Started poking fun at Nick's commentary.
- 20:24After his address. Was leaked writing your.
- 20:26House, our choice. In the comments, it's clear that
- 20:30many women view his Daxing as deserved, seeing it as a form of
- 20:34revenge for the celebration of efforts to control women's
- 20:36bodies in the United States. In fact, one TikTok.
- 20:40User wrote quote after. Going viral?
- 20:42With the phrase your. Body My choice, Nick Fuentes
- 20:44found himself on the receiving end of the internet's Play
- 20:47stupid games, win stupid prizes, effect women dug.
- 20:51Up and shared his. Personal information on Twitter
- 20:53delivering a clear message. Your house, our choice.
- 20:57In a brilliant display of. Digital detective work they.
- 20:59Turn to the tables showing exactly what happens when you
- 21:03try to control others. Mess around and you're bound to
- 21:06find out. A Tik Toker named Kelsey shared
- 21:09a similar sentiment in a viral TikTok that has amassed almost
- 21:13200,000 likes and 900,000 views at the time of recording.
- 21:18This man is terrified. This man is so fucking scared
- 21:22for his life right now and it makes me so happy.
- 21:25What would you look at here? The consequences of your own
- 21:28fucking actions. While many users agree with the
- 21:31messaging within these. Tik Toks others have.
- 21:34Questioned whether the Internet takes their digital revenge too.
- 21:37Far, especially when the. Offender didn't do anything
- 21:40illegal. Does a harmful post warrant your
- 21:43private information being leaked?
- 21:45There are definitely divided opinions on that question, but
- 21:48one thing Internet users seem to generate early agree on when it
- 21:51comes to this particular case is that Nick.
- 21:54Probably. Should have seen this coming.
- 21:56That's largely because doxing has become increasingly common
- 21:59over the years, prompting many users to be more careful about
- 22:02what they post online. And with the recent US election
- 22:05still fresh, many women and marginalized communities.
- 22:08Are deeply concerned about what a.
- 22:10Second Trump term will bring. Given that Nick's content isn't
- 22:13necessarily illegal and platforms are often slow to
- 22:16deplatform problematic figures, it's somewhat understandable
- 22:20that some users consider doxing as the only.
- 22:23Way to stop his. Harmful messaging Ultimately,
- 22:26whether you believe Nick had it coming or not, this reaction
- 22:29goes to show how normalized doxing has become since.
- 22:32The rise of TikTok. Like X and Reddit, TikTok has
- 22:35seen its fair share of doxing even before Nick.
- 22:38Another notable example is when Tik.
- 22:40T.O.K users started. Doxing the United States Supreme
- 22:43Court justices after. The overturn of Roe V.
- 22:46Wade in June 2022. At this point, I'm sure many of
- 22:50you have heard. Of Roe V Wade.
- 22:51Even if, like me, you aren't based in the United.
- 22:54States, but for those. Who are less familiar?
- 22:56the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn this ruling
- 22:59effectively removed the constitutional right to
- 23:02abortion, eliminating federal protections and leaving abortion
- 23:05laws up to the individual states.
- 23:07Unsurprisingly, people were angry leading some TikTok.
- 23:11Users to dox the. Conservative justices who backed
- 23:13the majority opinion, according to reporting by Jules.
- 23:16Roscoe for Vice quote. Some of the.
- 23:18Video shared. Supposed credit.
- 23:20Card information Other videos showed the home addresses of the
- 23:23five Republican appointed. Justices who voted to.
- 23:26Overturn the decision. Those addresses do show up in
- 23:29public records databases tied to the justices.
- 23:33While TikTok attempted to suppress the content and.
- 23:35Delete the videos. Roscoe notes that other videos.
- 23:38Continue to pop up with the information quote recirculating
- 23:42through smaller and smaller accounts in the same format a.
- 23:45Slideshow of the Justices portraits with text over their
- 23:48faces. This example is particularly
- 23:51interesting because it indicates one reason for the normalization
- 23:55of doxing on the platform. Gen.
- 23:57Zed treats doxing as a. Form of protest.
- 24:00A theme that is also clear when considering the reaction to Nick
- 24:03Fuentes. Since 2020, we have watched as
- 24:06Gen. Zed has embraced political
- 24:08activism and the pursuit of equality on social media.
- 24:11Through this. Gen.
- 24:12Zed has essentially changed what it means to be a celebrity.
- 24:15Fame is no longer just about glitz and glam.
- 24:18It's also about standing for change in progress with this
- 24:21shift, Genzet. Expects their favorite.
- 24:23Influencers and celebrities to take a stand on key issues and
- 24:27share their political endorsements.
- 24:28When they don't, the backlash can be intense.
- 24:32We all remember the response to Chapel Roads refusing to endorse
- 24:35Kamala Harris. Whether this perception is valid
- 24:38or not, it highlights the fusion of Internet culture, social
- 24:41media and politics. This, in turn, has made the
- 24:45digital space more. Powerful for political protest.
- 24:48Than ever before, there's no denying the positive.
- 24:51Side of the. Politicization of online spaces
- 24:55With TikTok democratizing fame and influence and political
- 24:58commentary becoming more common, the platform has given
- 25:00historically marginalized a chance to challenge racial
- 25:04hegemony and oppressive societal systems that are tough to break
- 25:07down. Doxing in some cases has become
- 25:10a powerful. Tool to flip.
- 25:12The balance of power and privilege on its head.
- 25:14But it's also a slippery slope. Beyond the risk of
- 25:18misidentification and the spread of inaccurate details.
- 25:21There's a larger. Issue with doxing and the no
- 25:24nuance culture that's taken root on TikTok.
- 25:27Consider. A typical TikTok.
- 25:30Comment section While comments are often funnier than the
- 25:32content itself, they can also veer into problematic and
- 25:36defensive territory, whether it's the anonymity.
- 25:39Or sheer volume of. Users on the platform people
- 25:41often don't assume the. Original poster will.
- 25:44See their harsh comments. The conversation around this no
- 25:47nuance culture came to a head last year when a creator named
- 25:51Michelle went viral after saying kindness and consideration for
- 25:54others. Are part of a.
- 25:56Broader social contract while most viewers saw Michelle's
- 25:59message as a simple reminder of a fundamental aspect of human
- 26:03interaction that we owe everyone a sense of decency and kindness
- 26:06at face value, some users took. Issue with her video.
- 26:10They claimed the Creator was advocating for compassion
- 26:13towards individuals. Who are?
- 26:14Racist and sexist, while others felt that her message attacked
- 26:18neurodivergent. People who have difficulty
- 26:20interpreting social cues. Michelle later took to the
- 26:23platform to clarify her original.
- 26:25Video noting that she was not trying to excuse harmful
- 26:27behavior, instead it. Was a call for.
- 26:29Everyone to approach people. With a base level.
- 26:32Of empathy and kindness. What we can take?
- 26:34Away from this exchange. Is how TikTok.
- 26:37Users seem to prioritize the impact and the outcome of their
- 26:40behavior online, even if it means sidelining values like
- 26:44politeness, kindness, and common decency.
- 26:47For many, the ends justify the means, even if it means
- 26:51bulldozing through these principles, while this isn't.
- 26:53Strictly related to. Doxing it.
- 26:55Shows how the crusade. For moral superiority underpins
- 26:59culture on TikTok and how we communicate to one another on
- 27:02the app more often than not. This sort of discourse.
- 27:05Champions social justice and equality while aiming to amplify
- 27:08the voices of marginalized communities.
- 27:11But that isn't. Always the case, especially.
- 27:13When the moralizing voices come from all.
- 27:16Right circles, so when? Doxing becomes an option.
- 27:19With real lives. Families and mental well-being
- 27:22at stake, Tik Tok's relentless moral crusade can quickly
- 27:26backfire. Leah Kim, writing for Junkie,
- 27:28highlights an instance where the rush to doxing on TikTok may
- 27:32have been slightly premature in April.
- 27:34Of last year creator. Jacqui la Bonita.
- 27:37Posted a video. Captioned Watch my confidence.
- 27:39Disappear after these. Random girls make fun of me for
- 27:42taking pics. The video shows Jackie.
- 27:45Posing for. Photos at a baseball.
- 27:46Game while 2 girls behind her flip off the camera and laugh
- 27:50Soon TikTok sluice found the girls names, accounts and even
- 27:54where they worked where the mounting pressure led to them
- 27:56to. Issue an apology to the creator.
- 27:59In her article Kim. Questions whether the girls
- 28:02deserve to be doxed. And harassed by thousands of
- 28:04social media users for basically photo bombing in a rude way.
- 28:09Quote. We probably all have our moments
- 28:11of rudeness in public, yet we don't have that moment broadcast
- 28:14to millions of people who find out where we work and try to
- 28:17destroy our lives. On the other hand.
- 28:20We've also probably. Faced moments of rudeness from
- 28:22other people and yearned for some kind of.
- 28:24Justice, she writes. Ultimately, it feels like.
- 28:27Doxing has become a rather acceptable form of punishment
- 28:30for those who end up in the court of public opinion.
- 28:34The fact that the. Definition of doxing has also
- 28:36expanded. Has helped this along.
- 28:39In a piece for The Atlantic, Caitlin Tiffany notes.
- 28:42How quote the word? Doxing wants to find a category
- 28:45of behaviors. Now it expresses an emotion, in
- 28:48other words. Whoever feels like they.
- 28:50Have been doxed, can claim the phenomenon.
- 28:52Through the article, she. Discusses a number of different
- 28:55incidents where. Creators or public figures?
- 28:57Have been doxed, noting how the term itself has been quote.
- 29:00Used to describe. So many different situations
- 29:04with varying degrees of sincerity and fairness.
- 29:06As a result, the. Original utility and definition
- 29:09of the term has diminished quote some people.
- 29:12Deploy the word. Doxing to refer to any.
- 29:14Breach of trust whether? Or not.
- 29:16It results in the dispersal of personally identifying
- 29:19information, Tiffany explains. In fandom spaces, doxing can
- 29:23refer to actions that do little more than make the practices of
- 29:26that fandom visible to a wider audience.
- 29:28I was once accused of doxing Harry Styles fans by tweeting
- 29:32out screenshots of a conversation that happened in a
- 29:35public Discord channel in which everybody participating was
- 29:39using a pseudonym quote. Therefore, as the definition of
- 29:42doxing becomes. Blurred the ethical.
- 29:44Concerns around it seem less consequential.
- 29:47On top of that, there's a definite sense of power in
- 29:50numbers, something that is amplified by the mob mentality
- 29:53that runs rampant on TikTok, with the algorithm tailoring
- 29:57content to users. It's easy to.
- 29:59Fall into an information bubble and become trapped by
- 30:02confirmation bias sometimes. This bias leaves us eager to dox
- 30:06creators. And average users, even when
- 30:08such a punishment far outweighs the offense.
- 30:11To circle back to the. Question at the top.
- 30:13Of the episode is it? Ever OK to dock someone?
- 30:16The expert opinions are mixed. As we've explored the.
- 30:20Consequences of doxing someone can be significant and life
- 30:23altering. When information is put out
- 30:25there in the online space, there's no telling.
- 30:28How viral it could go? With concerns around who might
- 30:30see it and what that they might choose to do with that
- 30:33information. On the flip side, some
- 30:36researchers like ethics and information technology scholar
- 30:39David M Douglas. Argue that.
- 30:41Doxing may be justified in cases of deception where the only.
- 30:45Way to show this deceit. And reveal the truth is to share
- 30:48information that is in the interest of the public.
- 30:51That being said, the ethics around the doxing that we
- 30:55typically see on social media rarely fall into this framework.
- 30:59And they're murky at best. What used to be a severe near
- 31:02breach of privacy. That occurred in rare and
- 31:04extreme circumstances, now feels almost commonplace.
- 31:09And while the trend won't vanish overnight, the debate over when,
- 31:12if ever, Daxing is justified. Will likely follow everyday.
- 31:17Social media users and. Creators for years.
- 31:20To come infinite. Scroll is a podcast.
