1:06
SPEAKER_04: I know.
1:07
SPEAKER_04: I'm having like deja vu flashbacks and all that stuff going on.
1:10
SPEAKER_04: So uh yeah, this feels this feels right.
1:12
SPEAKER_05: So you know what, folks?
1:14
SPEAKER_05: I was in town for the high estate shoot and I called Sean.
1:16
SPEAKER_05: I'm like, hey man, let's put the band back together for a night.
1:19
SPEAKER_05: Heck yeah.
1:20
SPEAKER_04: Heck yeah.
1:21
SPEAKER_04: So all kinds of crazy stuff got off work and went straight to the podcast room, got to work again, and we we are here.
1:26
SPEAKER_04: We are ready to rock and roll.
1:28
SPEAKER_05: I come walking up the steps, I'm like, is this where the party's at?
1:31
SPEAKER_05: And Sean's like sitting at the computer, fingers going 200 miles an hour, and he's like, Yeah, sure.
1:36
SPEAKER_04: No doubt, no doubt.
1:38
SPEAKER_04: No rest for the weary or the wicked.
1:39
SPEAKER_05: Or the wicked, yeah.
1:40
SPEAKER_05: How you been, Sean?
1:41
SPEAKER_04: Well, busier than a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest.
1:44
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
1:45
SPEAKER_04: But uh other than that, I have been getting out and doing a little more shooting here recently.
1:48
SPEAKER_04: I shot the uh SCTP um main event at the SCTP the benefit shoot, yep, for the main there at Cardinal Center.
1:56
SPEAKER_04: Um, really, you know, as you know, haven't been shooting a whole lot this year.
1:59
SPEAKER_04: I mean, I was kind of worried about getting my what is it, 500 targets you got to have into when you go to a big event like a state shoot.
2:04
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so I may make sure I was getting that in there.
2:07
SPEAKER_04: Usually by this time I got about 1,500 to 2,000 targets into my belt with with everything I usually do, but this year has definitely been uh You didn't you didn't want to go penalty class up to Masters again?
2:16
SPEAKER_04: Uh well I'd I prefer not to.
2:18
SPEAKER_04: I mean, you know, and and we'll talk about that more a little bit.
2:20
SPEAKER_04: I've I've been to Masters enough to know what it's like there, so I'm not don't feel like I don't feel like I'm missing anything.
2:26
SPEAKER_05: It's a lonely place for it.
2:28
SPEAKER_04: It is, it is, but uh that sometimes it puts you in check and lets you know where you're at.
2:32
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
2:34
SPEAKER_05: Um I just I don't know, man.
2:36
SPEAKER_05: Um I was excited to to come back in here and sit down with you.
2:39
SPEAKER_05: And you know, it's like Dave and I had a podcast last week and we were talking about how busy you've been and you know you haven't had a chance to shoot.
2:47
SPEAKER_05: Now you're sitting here basically proving me a liar.
2:49
SPEAKER_04: No, no, no, no, I haven't had a chance all year.
2:52
SPEAKER_04: Like I said, it just I mean, things just started to settle down.
2:54
SPEAKER_04: It's been an absolutely 2026 has been absolutely nuts for me.
2:57
SPEAKER_04: We've had a lot of stuff going on in the business, been dealing with the wife issues, um, some home issues and stuff like that.
3:03
SPEAKER_04: And uh, I just met with my uh my landlord today.
3:06
SPEAKER_04: We're getting ready to build onto the shop and add a 3,000 square foot garage out here.
3:11
SPEAKER_04: So that'll give us some more working room and give us a new wrap bay with a couple different uh options of you know get just getting work done quicker, sooner, faster.
3:19
SPEAKER_05: So when I come back in town, I'll have my own private parking space inside with heated and air conditioned bay.
3:24
SPEAKER_04: Sure.
3:26
SPEAKER_04: Sure.
3:27
SPEAKER_04: Whatever you say, man.
3:28
SPEAKER_04: Whatever you say.
3:29
SPEAKER_05: Um, hey, uh, real quick, Sean, let's get to a tourney talk.
3:33
SPEAKER_04: All right, let me see if I can remember how to do these.
3:34
SPEAKER_03: It's tourney talk.
3:39
SPEAKER_03: Brought to you by Scorechaser.
3:42
SPEAKER_04: All right, guys, let me see if I can knock the rust off here and make this happen.
3:45
SPEAKER_04: Only got one thing to announce for Tourney Talk.
3:47
SPEAKER_04: This is the inaugural event of Clays Coors Cause.
3:52
SPEAKER_04: It's October 3rd, 2026.
3:54
SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's in conjunction with Toys for Tots and Veterans, uh, the Veterans Network.
3:58
SPEAKER_04: Uh, lots of sponsorship available.
4:01
SPEAKER_04: It's at the Vermont Shooting Club, Punta Gordo, Florida.
4:04
SPEAKER_04: Catered lunch, all kinds of fun things going on.
4:06
SPEAKER_04: If you need more information on this event, visit their website www.claysforcause.com, and that's Clays F O Rcause.com.
4:16
SPEAKER_04: And uh check it out, see if you want to be uh a sponsor or help them out with that event.
4:20
SPEAKER_04: Obviously, everything's for a good cause.
4:21
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they got a lot of cool stuff going on at that event.
4:23
SPEAKER_04: They do.
4:24
SPEAKER_04: There was a lot, way too much to mention here in this short segment.
4:26
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and then hey, listen, everyone, um, Sean hasn't been around to pick up the slack here lately.
4:32
SPEAKER_05: So not only is he gonna do the training talk, I'm also gonna give him the make a break update of the week, Sean.
4:38
SPEAKER_05: And this is a big one.
4:39
SPEAKER_05: We had the SCTP ACUI tournament just this past week at Cardinal Center.
4:44
SPEAKER_05: You want to give everybody that that big roundabout update?
4:46
SPEAKER_04: Yep, Ed Petrol sent this over to us.
4:48
SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna try to read this off and make it as brief as possible.
4:51
SPEAKER_04: Uh, the fifth annual 2026 SCTP team top gun shootout on make-a-break was once again possibly the most entertaining shotgun event of the year.
4:59
SPEAKER_04: 50 teams shot on two different make-a-break layouts over five days, attempting to become one of the top eight teams to qualify for the top gun shootout.
5:07
SPEAKER_04: There was a lot of teams that qualified, but basically, I'm gonna kind of skim down through this for the the winners.
5:13
SPEAKER_04: Match number one saw the Hunting Hills Hawkeyes face off against McKenzie Shooting Sports.
5:18
SPEAKER_04: The Hawkeyes prevailed in two games straight, scoring 38 points to 28 points in both games.
5:22
SPEAKER_04: Uh, match two saw the Featherhorn Young Guns take game from the Forest City Juniors 39 to 30.
5:29
SPEAKER_04: Uh, the Forest City Juniors came back 46 to 35 in game two.
5:33
SPEAKER_04: In game three, the Forest City Juniors won 28 points to 26 to take the match.
5:38
SPEAKER_04: Then in match three, the Lake Oconey shooting team went ahead to head with the Gator Creek Young Guns.
5:43
SPEAKER_04: Gator Creek took game one 35 points to 22.
5:47
SPEAKER_04: Lake Oconey came back in game two, won 56 to 45.
5:51
SPEAKER_04: And in a close battle for game three, Lake Oconey prevailed over Gator Creek 39 to 38.
5:55
SPEAKER_04: Wow, that was a close one.
5:56
SPEAKER_04: Real close.
5:57
SPEAKER_04: And then finally in match four, the Ida trap shooting team took on the Muddy Road shooting team.
6:02
SPEAKER_04: In game one, Muddy Road won 44 points to 38.
6:06
SPEAKER_04: And in games two, uh, the Muddy Road shooting team took the match by a score of 28 to 18.
6:10
SPEAKER_04: Well, that's that's it for now.
6:12
SPEAKER_04: Then the semifinal match matches uh happened.
6:15
SPEAKER_04: In the uh semifinal match number one, saw the Hunting Hills Hawkeyes go head to head with Lake Oconey shooting team.
6:22
SPEAKER_04: In game one, the Hawkeyes were victorious by a score of 39 to 28.
6:25
SPEAKER_04: In game two, the Hawkeyes wrapped up the match by a score of 32 to 22.
6:29
SPEAKER_04: In the semifinal match number two, saw the Muddy Road shooting team shoot it out with the Forest City Juniors.
6:34
SPEAKER_04: Game one saw the Forest City Juniors win 46-37, and Forest City won the match in Game 2 by a score of 34-24, which set in motion what's now the longest-running rivalry when the Hunting Hills Hawkeyes shot off against the Forest City Juniors for the third year in a row for the coveted Ray Foreman Trophy and all the spoils that go with the Top Gun Championships.
6:53
SPEAKER_04: The Hawkeyes have been victorious the past two years, being the first team to take the Foreman trophy in back-to-back years.
6:59
SPEAKER_04: Just like last year, the Hawkeyes took Game 1 by a score of 39 to 30.
7:03
SPEAKER_04: And again, just like last year, the Forest City Juniors came back to dominate Game Two by a score of 34-13.
7:08
SPEAKER_04: Game three was extremely tight.
7:10
SPEAKER_04: The players had the crowd screaming and cheering as they made some incredible shots on the Federal Masterclass number six and the Rhino Choke number seven targets.
7:18
SPEAKER_04: Coming into the final frame with each team having one pair of targets left to shoot, Forest City led the game 40-39 with the crowd on the edge of their seats.
7:24
SPEAKER_04: Forest City's coach Zach Gutierrez and team risked it all and called for the Rhino Choke number seven target for the win.
7:30
SPEAKER_04: With the crowd holding their breath, Forest City's Mills Hollis called pull.
7:35
SPEAKER_04: He crushed the number one target and the Rhino choke seven took to the air.
7:39
SPEAKER_04: Mills fired, and after the normal heart-stopping delay, it takes the shot to travel the 70 yards to the target.
7:45
SPEAKER_04: A 50 cent size piece came off the back edge and brought the crowd to their feet as the Forest City Juniors claimed their second Ray Foreman trophy.
7:52
SPEAKER_04: In the individual championship that shot off on Saturday, Peyton Hillard was the girls' championship and Aiden Rowland was the boys' champion.
7:59
SPEAKER_04: Aiden and Peyton went head to head in the final round, and for the first time in several years, Aiden Rowland reclaimed their overall championship for the boys.
8:06
SPEAKER_04: You can see photos of everything on the official makeabreak.com website and watch the action for yourself on YouTube at Official Make A Break.
8:14
SPEAKER_04: Nice.
8:14
SPEAKER_05: Man, I tell you what, that you need to go back and listen to that episode uh we did uh the 411 episode, uh, Sean, if you haven't already heard it.
8:23
SPEAKER_05: The the format in which they do that shoot is totally different than a normal make or break shootout.
8:28
SPEAKER_04: Okay.
8:29
SPEAKER_05: And it is really cool.
8:30
SPEAKER_05: And there was a you know, I wasn't there this year, but I heard and I've got pictures and videos from people that were there.
8:36
SPEAKER_05: That's a big deal.
8:38
SPEAKER_04: Well, I can only imagine.
8:39
SPEAKER_04: I mean, obviously it's interesting to watch the individuals shoot, the big names shoot off against each other, but when you have teams and you got the parents and the spectators and everything rooting on the kids, I can only imagine that's just that's no different than a high school football game or whatever.
8:51
SPEAKER_04: You know, yeah, it's got to have that much intensity to it.
8:53
SPEAKER_05: From what I heard and what I saw, that's what it was.
8:55
SPEAKER_05: It was, you know, high school football stadium lit up.
8:58
SPEAKER_05: Nice.
8:59
SPEAKER_05: No, that's cool.
8:59
SPEAKER_04: I'd like to witness that actually.
9:01
SPEAKER_05: No, uh well, I'm talking with Ed.
9:03
SPEAKER_05: We're gonna try and be there in full force next year, maybe do a little bit of videoing, um, try to capture some of that because it is really cool for these kids.
9:10
SPEAKER_04: And they got a couple more coming up this year, yet, don't they?
9:12
SPEAKER_05: What's that?
9:13
SPEAKER_04: The the the uh shootoffs and stuff with the teams.
9:16
SPEAKER_05: Uh I don't know if HCUI, which is the college side of, I don't know if they are or not.
9:21
SPEAKER_05: I'll have to that's a good question.
9:22
SPEAKER_05: I'll have to ask that question.
9:24
SPEAKER_05: So, but um we were talking earlier and we got some fan mail sent to us from Ted Bryant, and he was talking about he's a student of Anthony's, made his way up to masterclass, and found that his performance was not up to par with the rest of masterclass.
9:42
SPEAKER_05: Sean Alley, does this sound familiar?
9:44
SPEAKER_05: Strikingly, yes.
9:46
SPEAKER_04: So it and it and I will I will preface that by saying it all depends on where you're shooting, too.
9:51
SPEAKER_05: Well, it does, but I mean, like going to big events, it was like this isn't gonna happen.
9:56
SPEAKER_04: Well, we've we've talked about that ad nauseum.
9:58
SPEAKER_04: I mean, let's face it.
9:58
SPEAKER_04: I mean, uh average everyday shooter, you go to a regional or a big state shoot or the nationals, you know, God help you, you're shooting against the best in the country.
10:08
SPEAKER_04: And if you're not that committed to put that kind of time in practice in, it's really hard to be competitive.
10:16
SPEAKER_04: Well, it's not to feel like you're competitive.
10:18
SPEAKER_05: If you have the skill set to just get you into master class, you're still nowhere near the skill set of the top of master class.
10:28
SPEAKER_05: No.
10:28
SPEAKER_05: Um, and and that's and this is something that Sean and I probably can speak from very good experience on because Sean and I have been back and forth from master to double A, what, four times now?
10:40
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, three or four times at least.
10:41
SPEAKER_04: Each.
10:41
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, and I I'm telling you, it it's that and don't get wrong, please people uh don't misunderstand me.
10:50
SPEAKER_05: I I absolutely love our sport, I'm passionate about it.
10:53
SPEAKER_05: Everybody knows that.
10:55
SPEAKER_05: It's the one flaw in our game.
10:57
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, is that double AA master class debacle, right?
11:00
SPEAKER_05: Um they tried to separate it out with the pro class, that's not enough.
11:05
SPEAKER_05: I mean, you're taking 40 out of what?
11:08
SPEAKER_05: At a at the national 700 masterclass shooters.
11:11
SPEAKER_04: Right, and that's the problem.
11:12
SPEAKER_04: I mean, master class, and I think that with the recent rule changes, the NSCA is trying to address that and and kind of forcing people.
11:20
SPEAKER_04: I mean, well, not forcing them, but I guess giving the opportunity to where if you're not competitive in the class, uh the way the rules are now, they're gonna it's gonna push you down, right?
11:29
SPEAKER_04: If you don't get enough punches, if you don't get a high enough uh average, shooting average percentage, it's gonna push you down.
11:34
SPEAKER_04: Now, obviously, anybody can say, no, I don't want to be pushed down to double A or whatever, uh, and they can stay in that class.
11:41
SPEAKER_04: I mean, again, to me, I want to shoot competitively.
11:45
SPEAKER_04: I don't want a title that says, hey, I'm Kung Fu master of of shotgun sports, and you know, that's not what turns me on.
11:52
SPEAKER_04: Some guys that might be what their whole bag is, and that's fine.
11:55
SPEAKER_04: If that's what you are, and that's what you like, you you earned it, you know.
11:58
SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying that that somebody else takes it away from you, but when I go out to compete, I want to know that I'm I have a chance to at least against a peer group.
12:08
SPEAKER_05: You want to be matched with equal skill level.
12:10
SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
12:10
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I don't want to go out on a course and necessarily know that I have to shoot against Anthony, David, uh, you know, name your family.
12:18
SPEAKER_04: Corey, who yeah, who Zach, you know, I I because I know already the answer to that question is no, I'm not gonna compete with them.
12:25
SPEAKER_06: Right.
12:25
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there's no way I can.
12:26
SPEAKER_04: There's just absolute no I can't.
12:27
SPEAKER_04: I don't have enough experience, don't have enough time to practice, and those guys, that's what they do.
12:31
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, let's face it I mean, I'm taking anything away from them.
12:33
SPEAKER_04: They've earned it and they're great, but the separator between the average weekend warrior shooters and what those guys do is night and day.
12:43
SPEAKER_05: It's night and day.
12:43
SPEAKER_05: 100%.
12:44
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's night and day.
12:45
SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
12:46
SPEAKER_05: And there's there's something we said there too, and David and I briefly touched on it is you know, enjoying the game for what it is and accepting where you're at with a skill level, or understanding the commitment it's gonna take to get you to where you want to be.
13:02
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, right.
13:03
SPEAKER_05: So if you want to be at the top of the game, I hope you got lots of money, yeah, I hope you got lots of time, yeah, because there is no shortcut.
13:12
SPEAKER_05: And everybody's looking for it.
13:14
SPEAKER_05: Everybody thinks guns and stacks and glasses and vests and ammo and chokes and look, it all matters to an extent, but it's a six inches between the ears.
13:26
SPEAKER_05: If it doesn't have the the knowledge and the experience, it's not gonna happen.
13:32
SPEAKER_04: Well, and I think I've heard it from David and other people too.
13:35
SPEAKER_04: What helps you out when you're at their level is that you have already performed on that stage and you can pull from past experiences.
13:45
SPEAKER_04: For a lot of us, if we ever have like the greatest weekend at a tournament that we've ever had, like at a at a regional or a state shooter or nationals, fine.
13:54
SPEAKER_04: Maybe you do place, maybe you do get up in there in the top 10 or something, maybe you just I mean, you know, all the pieces fit together, right?
14:01
SPEAKER_04: But that's one time, right?
14:04
SPEAKER_04: That's one time, and the next time you go, there's no guarantee that that's gonna happen.
14:08
SPEAKER_04: And if it does happen again, are you able to pull back and remember what you did the last time to get you through that successfully?
14:16
SPEAKER_04: Right.
14:16
SPEAKER_04: And that's that's the big trick, right?
14:18
SPEAKER_04: I mean, the guys like Corey and them that have done it over and over and over and over again, it's it's a it's a very, very uh big confidence booster.
14:26
SPEAKER_04: Right.
14:26
SPEAKER_04: You know, when you go up every everybody else is like, oh God, what am I doing?
14:29
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, seriously.
14:30
SPEAKER_05: No, you that's a hundred percent.
14:33
SPEAKER_04: So Jason, I guess basically, you know, the the question that comes up often, and I've been experiencing that myself this year, is the fact that I have, you know, I took a step back with the podcast, with my shooting and everything.
14:48
SPEAKER_04: And um, it was actually a good thing to get away from it all.
14:53
SPEAKER_05: Trying to take a breather.
14:54
SPEAKER_04: Trying to take it kind of take a breather because you know, bad habits start forming, and and maybe it's not even habits, but mentally.
14:59
SPEAKER_04: Mentally, like you get stuck in a rut with how you perform and stuff.
15:03
SPEAKER_04: And I've noticed, I mean, I just started kind of shooting recently here, and I'm in double A.
15:08
SPEAKER_04: And um, you know, I went out to a tournament last week, and there was, I think, 20-some people in the class, and I I came in like oh, fifth or sixth out of those 20 people.
15:17
SPEAKER_04: So I mean, I didn't shoot bad, I didn't shoot great, but I shot a lot better and I felt a lot better about myself, enjoyed the tournament for what it was.
15:25
SPEAKER_04: Ah, there's key.
15:26
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I enjoyed it.
15:27
SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
15:28
SPEAKER_04: So, I mean, I get where a lot of these guys are saying when you get to the upper classes, you get to double A, you get to master class, and especially masterclass, sometimes, uh, even though you've worked hard to get there, what I found, and maybe you f you did too, is that when you go to these big events, the enjoyment's not there anymore.
15:48
SPEAKER_05: I think too many people let their score define them.
15:52
SPEAKER_05: Yes.
15:53
SPEAKER_04: But that's what this game's all about, right?
15:55
SPEAKER_04: I mean, when you go to a tournament, you're trying to shoot the highest score possible.
15:58
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, but okay, so the great Cory Cruz himself and I had a little discussion, and he's like, look, he's like, you know, as little as five years ago, you can go out and you know, make a couple mistakes and still come out on top of the tournament.
16:14
SPEAKER_05: He's talking about winning the tournament.
16:15
SPEAKER_04: Right, right.
16:16
SPEAKER_05: He said now, at the level he's at, you have to make a hundred perfect moves and get lucky on one or two targets.
16:25
SPEAKER_05: There is no room for error anymore.
16:27
SPEAKER_05: And that so for the average person that shoots this game to even comprehend that, yeah, is just it's it's so far out in left field, it's like what are we doing here?
16:37
SPEAKER_04: Well, it's it's the same, it's the same scenario as the guys that shoot trap.
16:42
SPEAKER_04: If you don't shoot that hundred straight, you're not in the you're not even competing.
16:45
SPEAKER_04: It's becoming a game of perfection, right?
16:47
SPEAKER_05: Because the the the level the level of competition and intensity at the top of the game is just went leaps and bounds.
16:55
SPEAKER_05: Look, I know guys shot 100 straights back in the late 90s, early 2000s, all that kind of stuff.
17:01
SPEAKER_05: Like that that's been going on forever.
17:02
SPEAKER_05: The difference is is the targets have changed.
17:05
SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, the environment's changed, the technology's changed, and now you've got guys that are shooting.
17:12
SPEAKER_05: You cannot tell me that Dan Carlisle from back in the day that ran 100 straights, him and John Kruger, trust me, I saw it.
17:21
SPEAKER_05: You saw it, Sean.
17:22
SPEAKER_05: Yep.
17:23
SPEAKER_05: Even here in Ohio, we saw it happen.
17:25
SPEAKER_04: They're not gonna come out at the current competition level, and I don't think they're gonna be that competitive.
17:31
SPEAKER_04: If you if you could pick them up from 1999 and drop them in today, and drop them into today, no, I don't think they would be their name because they haven't seen the types of targets.
17:42
SPEAKER_04: I mean, we have a lot of talented target setters, right?
17:45
SPEAKER_04: A lot of talented target setters that really know what they're doing.
17:48
SPEAKER_04: There's there's some bad ones too, but I'm just saying these guys have really got to dial in.
17:53
SPEAKER_04: They understand the visualization, they understand what they're trying to accomplish with off-speed targets and transitioning targets, and they know what the basic mistakes are going to be made by people like us.
18:05
SPEAKER_05: It's also the seriousness of the game.
18:07
SPEAKER_05: You know, this game started off as well, technically it started off as a way to train for hunting.
18:13
SPEAKER_05: Right.
18:14
SPEAKER_05: Okay.
18:14
SPEAKER_05: Then it went to a hobby sport.
18:16
SPEAKER_05: Now it's in that, it's in that narrow little place right now where it's trying to break from a hobby sport to a professional sport.
18:25
SPEAKER_05: And you have people that want to come out and enjoy the game, the hobby side.
18:30
SPEAKER_05: Okay.
18:31
SPEAKER_05: So at let's let's just take a big tournament, say there's uh 2,000 people there.
18:37
SPEAKER_05: Okay, now we're talking Jack Lynx, US Open, National Championship, whatever, right?
18:42
SPEAKER_05: Out of that 2,000 people, how many people are there to win that tournament?
18:46
SPEAKER_05: A handful.
18:48
SPEAKER_05: Twenty?
18:48
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
18:49
SPEAKER_05: Thirty?
18:49
SPEAKER_05: Just a handful.
18:50
SPEAKER_04: I mean, look, if you want how many people are realistically acknowledging that they're they're competitive enough to Well, I mean, look at look at guys like Okay, Tom C just won the world.
19:00
SPEAKER_04: Yep.
19:01
SPEAKER_05: Mike Wilgis won the national, he's the reigning national champion right now.
19:05
SPEAKER_05: Do you know how many years these guys have competed to get a title like that?
19:09
SPEAKER_04: Well, and that's what I'm saying.
19:10
SPEAKER_04: I mean, for the average guy that works a 40-50 hour week, and his time to spend on the range is on the weekends or maybe an evening once a week if he can get away because the family's not taking him, you know, doesn't have kids going to ball games and things like that.
19:24
SPEAKER_04: You can't commit that kind of time if you're working a nine to five Monday through Friday or Monday through Saturday, like these guys that are basically doing it for a living.
19:33
SPEAKER_05: Right.
19:33
SPEAKER_05: So back to the point of hand.
19:35
SPEAKER_05: You have a guy like Ted Bryant, or you, Sean Alley, or me, Jason Rambo, that earned enough points, and guess what?
19:42
SPEAKER_05: We're in that class.
19:43
SPEAKER_05: But that's the that's where that's where the problem comes.
19:47
SPEAKER_04: That's where the flaw of the system is, and we've discussed it uh again until we're blue in the face about well, maybe we make a class system that strictly uh addresses the averages, or maybe we make uh a um, you know, some kind of a uh a playoff system like you know to get you there, to be able to qualify to shoot masterclass in the nationals.
20:05
SPEAKER_04: Or what I mean, we've talked about that and a lot of other people have too.
20:08
SPEAKER_04: I think I think that the problem is the way the things are set up now, and we've said it time and time again.
20:13
SPEAKER_04: Eventually, if you shoot enough and you gain enough experience, you are gonna go to master class because for the for the most part, you're not shooting regionals and nationals and stuff like that.
20:22
SPEAKER_04: You're shooting your local state weekend tournaments at your local clubs, and the level of competition is far off the pace of what you're gonna see at a big state shoot or a regional or a national.
20:32
SPEAKER_05: Right.
20:33
SPEAKER_05: Well, and like you said, we've talked talked about it at length until we're blue in the face, and you know, we've talked about everything from qualification process, averages, blah, blah, blah.
20:44
SPEAKER_05: You've heard the saying an act of Congress.
20:46
SPEAKER_05: Well, and it's I don't mean default the NSCA, but look, there's a lot of moving parts in just changing a rule.
20:54
SPEAKER_05: You know, what you change, one little sentence that you change in the rules could affect way more people than you were trying to affect.
21:02
SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
21:03
SPEAKER_04: And that's the that's the hard part about this whole thing.
21:05
SPEAKER_04: I mean, the recent changes that they've done with down classing and stuff, that sets some people off.
21:11
SPEAKER_04: And then other people like me are, yeah, why yeah, absolutely.
21:15
SPEAKER_04: Make it really hard to get to masterclass because, in my opinion, it should be that.
21:19
SPEAKER_04: Yes, it should be that to begin with.
21:21
SPEAKER_04: It should be like the hardest thing ever to go up there and compete against Zach and compete against Anthony and compete against David.
21:27
SPEAKER_04: You that you should be only get there if you're putting in somewhere close to that amount of effort.
21:33
SPEAKER_05: Yes.
21:34
SPEAKER_05: And so credit to Ted and his letter, which by the way, Ted, thank you for writing us.
21:38
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
21:39
SPEAKER_05: He he's taking the rest of the year off.
21:41
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
21:42
SPEAKER_05: He's not going to compete because he wants to get bumped back to him.
21:45
SPEAKER_04: Well, and you know, the comment that I read in there that kind of concerned me is Am I a quitter?
21:49
SPEAKER_04: And I don't think you're a quitter.
21:50
SPEAKER_04: I mean, I look at myself, again, using myself as an example.
21:54
SPEAKER_04: I've shot like just at 500 targets, and we are in almost near the end of July at this point.
22:00
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
22:00
SPEAKER_04: Whereas any other year in the last, you know, six, seven years, I would have had 1,500 to 2,000 targets under my belt at this point.
22:07
SPEAKER_05: Right.
22:09
SPEAKER_04: You have to get be honest with yourself and say, look, as much as I like to do this, uh, and I've never understood, I mean, the commitment that some of these people have traveling the circuit all year long.
22:19
SPEAKER_04: Oh, it's insane.
22:20
SPEAKER_04: The the money that you spend, the time commitment, it's like, how do you like, if you're working, how the hell do you get enough time off to go do that if you're working at a job?
22:29
SPEAKER_05: Right.
22:29
SPEAKER_05: And well, we're gonna address that here in a minute because of another letter that we got.
22:33
SPEAKER_04: Right.
22:33
SPEAKER_05: But go ahead with your point.
22:35
SPEAKER_04: Well, what I'm trying to get at is that look, it's hard enough for me to get away and go to a weekend tournament here in Ohio.
22:44
SPEAKER_04: We got a lot of great clubs, you know that a lot of great targets are thrown, and we have great turnouts.
22:49
SPEAKER_04: I mean, anywhere from you know 125 to 180 shooters on an average weekend tournament at Hillendale, Cardinal, you know, South Cuyoga, Airport Ridge, all of those great clubs.
23:00
SPEAKER_04: So it's not like there's not competition there.
23:02
SPEAKER_04: Right.
23:03
SPEAKER_04: It's not, but it's just such a different level when you get to these big events that it's like, how do you bridge that gap?
23:09
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
23:10
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
23:10
SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's it's it's it's almost impossible.
23:12
SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, and Matt Miller and I have talked about this because George's a hotbed, right?
23:16
SPEAKER_05: I mean, look at the look at the amount of pros that live in Georgia.
23:18
SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
23:19
SPEAKER_05: So a multi-tournament there is like brutal.
23:21
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
23:23
SPEAKER_05: And, you know, I mean, the list goes on, right?
23:25
SPEAKER_05: I mean, you got Brandon, Kyle, Kevin.
23:27
SPEAKER_05: I mean, just go down the list.
23:28
SPEAKER_05: Right.
23:29
SPEAKER_05: But even that, you take a the like the circuit shoots that they're having, which I think a lot of states need to pay attention that.
23:36
SPEAKER_05: I think that's really cool what they're doing.
23:38
SPEAKER_05: But you take a circuit shoot like that, and you take the guys, the top five guys that are leading that circuit.
23:45
SPEAKER_05: Now throw them in a regional.
23:47
SPEAKER_05: All of a sudden their names are down there a little farther.
23:49
SPEAKER_05: Okay, okay, now let's take them to the US Open.
23:52
SPEAKER_05: Their names are down.
23:53
SPEAKER_05: Even further.
23:53
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
23:54
SPEAKER_05: Let's take them to a national.
23:55
SPEAKER_05: Yep.
23:56
SPEAKER_05: And see, this is the problem.
23:58
SPEAKER_05: And it it's real easy for a guy to get to master.
24:02
SPEAKER_05: And then he gets it's we're also real easy for that guy or gal, excuse me, to get to master.
24:08
SPEAKER_05: And then it's also real easy for them to get discouraged.
24:11
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
24:11
SPEAKER_05: And again, they're letting their score define them, and they don't understand.
24:16
SPEAKER_05: Look, you shot a 178 out of 200, and you're way down the list in results.
24:24
SPEAKER_05: But let's take a look at that 178.
24:27
SPEAKER_05: Because when you were coming through C, B, A, double A class, you would have loved it.
24:31
SPEAKER_04: You would have given anything to have that score.
24:33
SPEAKER_05: So you actually have improved, but you look at the number one guy that's sitting on a 192, which is ridiculous.
24:42
SPEAKER_05: Okay.
24:42
SPEAKER_05: And then you're like, oh man, I I'm I'm so far.
24:46
SPEAKER_05: I'm not even close.
24:47
SPEAKER_04: I shouldn't even be, I shouldn't even be in this class.
24:49
SPEAKER_05: And that's where I think, and please don't anybody take offense to this if you're on the NSCA.
24:55
SPEAKER_05: I want you to listen to this.
24:56
SPEAKER_05: That's where I think they're missing the boat because people see that and they get so discouraged, just like Ted that wrote us this letter.
25:04
SPEAKER_05: He he's done for the year.
25:05
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
25:06
SPEAKER_05: He's like, I'm not shooting any more registered targets.
25:08
SPEAKER_04: And we've heard it all the time.
25:09
SPEAKER_04: People get to masterclass and they quit.
25:11
SPEAKER_05: Oh, I hear about it all the time.
25:13
SPEAKER_04: They're done.
25:14
SPEAKER_04: It's like, well, I've I've I've come to the pinnacle and I realize that to get at the top of this peak, right?
25:21
SPEAKER_04: Is I don't have I don't have the resources, I don't have the time.
25:24
SPEAKER_05: How many letters have we gotten over the years, Sean, where people say my goal is to get to masterclass?
25:32
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
25:32
SPEAKER_05: And how many times have I responded going, no?
25:34
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
25:35
SPEAKER_05: Put the brakes on, bud, smell the roses, enjoy yourself.
25:38
SPEAKER_04: To be brutally honest, Jason, if you look back when we started shooting in two registered tournaments in 2017, that was the forefront of our mind.
25:46
SPEAKER_04: We wanted to move up because that is the if you're a competitive person, that's your mindset.
25:51
SPEAKER_04: That's how you gauge.
25:52
SPEAKER_05: We would have spent$10,000 for a punch.
25:55
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
25:55
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
25:56
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
25:56
SPEAKER_04: And these days, I'm like, who cares?
25:58
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
25:59
SPEAKER_04: You know, and that's not what drives me.
26:00
SPEAKER_04: Like I said, I think I've come full circle to where when we started out, you know, I was I was wet behind the ears, or whatever you want to call it.
26:08
SPEAKER_04: I enjoyed shooting just for the fun of shooting.
26:11
SPEAKER_05: The enjoyment of shooting.
26:12
SPEAKER_05: Right.
26:12
SPEAKER_04: And then as I got more serious and realized I had to learn a lot more, had to put more time, more money, more resources into doing it to get good.
26:20
SPEAKER_04: That was okay because I could also see myself, I moved from, you know, E class to D class to C class to B class.
26:27
SPEAKER_04: And as that progressed along, like, yeah, man, I'm I'm getting it done.
26:30
SPEAKER_04: And that's, I think anybody with a competitive spirit would look at that and say, Yeah, I'm I'm you know stepping up the stairs and I'm getting better.
26:37
SPEAKER_05: Well, not only that, you're seeing your your progress and you're understanding that you are progressing, you are getting better.
26:44
SPEAKER_05: But once you get to masterclass, there's nowhere else left to go.
26:48
SPEAKER_04: Then you ain't off into the black hole.
26:50
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and the problem is that you know, once you get to that point, you kind of have to take a step back and reevaluate yourself and say, why am I shooting this game?
26:59
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
27:00
SPEAKER_04: Do I really enjoy it?
27:01
SPEAKER_04: And if so, good for you, because that's really really where you need to be focused at.
27:06
SPEAKER_04: Right.
27:06
SPEAKER_04: You don't need to be focused on your score.
27:08
SPEAKER_04: If you go to a big regional event or or or a US Open or something and you aren't on the first page of the results, right?
27:16
SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's great to have that as an aspiration.
27:18
SPEAKER_04: It's great to have that as a as a goal.
27:21
SPEAKER_04: But the reality of it is if you're uh a working stiff and you're working nine to five Monday through Friday, where do you find the time to do that?
27:28
SPEAKER_04: Oh, exactly.
27:29
SPEAKER_05: And where do you find the resources to do that?
27:31
SPEAKER_05: Right.
27:31
SPEAKER_04: You know.
27:32
SPEAKER_05: So, okay, all of this poses a question because we have a lot of listeners that are DCBA double A.
27:41
SPEAKER_05: If you had to do it all over again, and I know you would, if you had to do it all over again.
27:47
SPEAKER_05: Now we started an E class back in the day.
27:49
SPEAKER_05: That's that was that right, that all has gone away now.
27:52
SPEAKER_05: So now they're starting in, I think they start in C class now and then you get bumped down to D's, which is that's all.
27:59
SPEAKER_05: That's a little weird too.
28:00
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
28:00
SPEAKER_05: So okay, Sean, you had to start all over again.
28:04
SPEAKER_05: Knowing what you know now, you cannot tell me that you wouldn't have put more effort into training and practice to when you go there, when you go to a tournament, yeah, you you know you're gonna do well in that class and you're gonna punch up or you're gonna get punches or whatever, but I bet you you would concentrate more on where am I going after this than where am I at now and how can I get more punches?
28:31
SPEAKER_05: Right.
28:32
SPEAKER_05: Is it making sense what I'm trying to say?
28:34
SPEAKER_04: Well, and I would say the other thing is too, uh if I if I went back there and knowing what I know now, I would not have spent as much money on tournaments because we went to every freaking tournament there was available.
28:44
SPEAKER_05: Mistake number one.
28:45
SPEAKER_04: That was mistake number one.
28:47
SPEAKER_04: And by doing so, the odds are that you're gonna punch.
28:50
SPEAKER_04: I mean, you know, if you're getting good enough, right?
28:53
SPEAKER_04: If you go to 50 tournaments a year versus going to five tournaments a year, you're gonna punch.
28:58
SPEAKER_04: You're gonna punch.
28:58
SPEAKER_05: Especially if you go to big tournaments.
29:00
SPEAKER_04: Yes, exactly.
29:01
SPEAKER_04: So, with that said, I think if I had to go back and look at everything all over again, I would have spent more time on the practice field, I would have spent more time acquiring a good coach, I would have spent more time learning the fundamentals and getting myself to a point where I knew I would be competitive.
29:20
SPEAKER_04: And then and only then I would have gone into tournaments.
29:24
SPEAKER_04: And and again, I probably wouldn't have shot as many of the local weekend tournaments that I do or I did, but being knowing that I put the the legwork in it, I would have saved myself for certain tournaments.
29:37
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know what I mean, and trying to go out there and and make sure that I'm I'm competing against a good group of people, not 10 or 15 in a class, but 30, 40 in a class to know where I'm at.
29:47
SPEAKER_05: Well, credit to to certain coaches, and I know Wendell's one of them, and I think David's one of them.
29:53
SPEAKER_05: They'll tell their students, do not go to a tournament until I tell you to.
29:56
SPEAKER_05: Right.
29:56
SPEAKER_05: Because they want them to have a certain a certain catalog of targets in their wheelhouse before they go to a tournament.
30:06
SPEAKER_05: And, you know, have you made the perfect move on these targets?
30:09
SPEAKER_05: Can do you know the, you know, whatever it is.
30:12
SPEAKER_04: But to be clear, it's that dopamine fix that you get when you go to a tournament.
30:16
SPEAKER_04: I know.
30:17
SPEAKER_04: You know, you can I can go out to Cardinal all day long on a Wednesday and shoot, and nothing bothers me.
30:23
SPEAKER_04: I can hit some of the hardest targets out there and and be clean and everything about it.
30:27
SPEAKER_04: And then when you get to a tournament, because of the energy, because that you know there's something on the line there, right?
30:34
SPEAKER_04: It totally readjusts your brain into a different way.
30:37
SPEAKER_04: And I think you think, act, and perform differently at a tournament than you do when you're a practice.
30:42
SPEAKER_05: Perfect example of that.
30:43
SPEAKER_05: So um our friend Todd and I went to Blackjack, and they still had the tournament targets set up on the I think it's the black horse, whatever it is on the in the on the back stretch where they have the big loop in the back.
30:56
SPEAKER_05: I think it's a black horse.
30:58
SPEAKER_05: Maybe blue, blue or black, whatever it is, it's where the tournament was.
31:02
SPEAKER_05: I saw a 96 on that.
31:03
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
31:04
SPEAKER_05: That would have been HOA.
31:06
SPEAKER_05: I didn't think anything of it.
31:08
SPEAKER_05: Like, this is easy.
31:11
SPEAKER_05: Tournament day, I'd have been lucky to clear an 85.
31:14
SPEAKER_05: Right, exactly.
31:14
SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
31:15
SPEAKER_05: Because it's it's the mindset, right?
31:16
SPEAKER_05: It's the mindset.
31:18
SPEAKER_05: So it is hard to get that.
31:19
SPEAKER_05: So what I try to tell people, this is gonna sound goofy to you, Sean.
31:23
SPEAKER_05: Go to mortarity events.
31:25
SPEAKER_05: Yes, and everybody's like, oh, well, those targets are so easy, blah, blah, blah.
31:29
SPEAKER_05: I'm like, did you shoot 100 straight?
31:31
SPEAKER_05: Right.
31:31
SPEAKER_05: No, I shot a 92.
31:32
SPEAKER_05: Well, why'd you drop eight targets?
31:34
SPEAKER_05: Well, and you were there with me.
31:36
SPEAKER_05: Wait a minute, wait a minute.
31:37
SPEAKER_05: You could have gone and had really good practice, got tournament training, right?
31:43
SPEAKER_05: Because you're under pressure for your score.
31:45
SPEAKER_05: Yep, and you dropped eight targets.
31:47
SPEAKER_05: So you're not ready to go to a tournament.
31:49
SPEAKER_04: Well, and if you if you remember back in the day, we went to Cardinal on a weekend after a tournament, uh charity, uh, a court commercial or a corporate event or whatever it was.
31:57
SPEAKER_04: And I shot, I almost shot 100 straight.
32:00
SPEAKER_04: Yep, you dropped the last bird.
32:01
SPEAKER_04: I dropped the last, the 100th bird.
32:04
SPEAKER_04: I could not freaking hit.
32:06
SPEAKER_04: I'm like, you gotta be kidding me.
32:08
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was perfect all the way through.
32:10
SPEAKER_04: Right.
32:10
SPEAKER_04: And it just got to me.
32:12
SPEAKER_04: Yes.
32:12
SPEAKER_04: And that's what I'm saying.
32:13
SPEAKER_04: People don't realize what that does to you when you're in that situation.
32:18
SPEAKER_04: When you know that one bird would make or break you.
32:21
SPEAKER_04: Do you have the mental wherewithal to be able to make it happen?
32:25
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
32:26
SPEAKER_05: Well, so we're we're kind of venturing down rabbit holes here, but back to the point at hand, you know, again, thank you to Ted for writing us.
32:35
SPEAKER_05: But I I think the ultimate point here, the ultimate fix in this is going to be a classification change, which me, you, and everybody listening to this can talk about this to a blue in the face.
32:44
SPEAKER_05: It's that's beyond us, right?
32:46
SPEAKER_05: We can write ideas to the NSCA, we can get a hold of our, you know, our national delegate, um, or write to an EC member and tell them our ideas.
32:54
SPEAKER_05: But until they figure out a way to implement an idea or a change to the classification system that doesn't have that, you know, that ripple effect in the pond.
33:05
SPEAKER_05: You throw the rock and all the ripples, all the effects, until they can figure out a way to implement it.
33:09
SPEAKER_05: We're gonna have to get by with what we have.
33:11
SPEAKER_05: Well, so I would say the ultimate solution here is to don't quit shooting.
33:18
SPEAKER_05: I I would say to Ted, man, go to some charity events, it's for a good cause anyway.
33:23
SPEAKER_05: I understand the targets are a little expensive, but you're it'll still give you that tournament experience and and kind of prepare you a little bit more.
33:30
SPEAKER_05: Oh, you know what?
33:31
SPEAKER_05: If the targets are so easy, then you need to be showing me some scorecards with 100 straight.
33:35
SPEAKER_05: Right.
33:36
SPEAKER_04: Well, and and not only that, I I still think that, you know, because the NSA is going to do whatever the NSA is going to do, no offense to them one way or the other.
33:43
SPEAKER_04: I think, just like we talked about, if if I could go back and do it all over again, I think people need to have the wherewithal to be able to say, okay, listen, yeah, I want to do all this, I want to go to every tournament and do all this stuff, but you need to have the self-discipline to say that's not necessarily the best course of action for me.
34:01
SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
34:02
SPEAKER_04: I'll be a better shooter if I don't go to so many tournaments and I spend more of my time, more of my effort practicing or going to charity events or whatever.
34:09
SPEAKER_04: Or going to see your coach.
34:10
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, to where because if you go to these tournaments and you punch up, all of a sudden you're from C class to B class.
34:17
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
34:17
SPEAKER_04: And if you do well there, B class to A class, and hey, guess what?
34:20
SPEAKER_04: Things are getting real now.
34:21
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
34:21
SPEAKER_04: And now you punch into double A and you're getting a taste of almost what it's like to be in masterclass.
34:26
SPEAKER_04: And you can't go back.
34:27
SPEAKER_04: Right.
34:28
SPEAKER_04: You can't go back with unless you're sandbagging or intentionally trying to screw you.
34:32
SPEAKER_04: Exactly, unless you take time off.
34:34
SPEAKER_04: Because once you get to master class, you're there until for a whole year until you get dropped back if you don't make the qualifications.
34:42
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
34:43
SPEAKER_05: Welcome to hell.
34:43
SPEAKER_04: So don't yeah, so don't rush it.
34:45
SPEAKER_04: All we can all I can say is don't rush it.
34:47
SPEAKER_04: Let the process happen.
34:49
SPEAKER_04: I would, I would have rather spent you know, I mean, I I progressed pretty quickly.
34:53
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
34:53
SPEAKER_04: I think I got to master class in about three years.
34:56
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
34:56
SPEAKER_04: And and it's just like one of those things like looking back at it, I would have rather taken three years to get to A class.
35:02
SPEAKER_04: Oh man.
35:03
SPEAKER_04: I would have been way better off had I done that.
35:05
SPEAKER_05: Tell me if I'm lying, I'm dying.
35:08
SPEAKER_05: We had more fun in B class than we did any other part.
35:11
SPEAKER_05: I mean, we were we we talk about it all the time.
35:14
SPEAKER_04: It was the best class to compete in.
35:16
SPEAKER_04: That was so much fun.
35:16
SPEAKER_04: So much fun.
35:17
SPEAKER_04: So competitive.
35:18
SPEAKER_04: You knew that you could do well, but you didn't know that you could do well.
35:21
SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
35:21
SPEAKER_04: That's where that's the sweet spot.
35:23
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
35:23
SPEAKER_04: That's the sweet spot.
35:24
SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
35:24
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
35:25
SPEAKER_05: 100%.
35:26
SPEAKER_05: Hey, listen, um folks, Sean, after six years, still has not installed air conditioning in this room.
35:32
SPEAKER_05: So we're going to kick the air conditioners on.
35:34
SPEAKER_05: We're going to have a uh David's brain segment real quick, and we'll be right back.
35:38
SPEAKER_05: I want to get back into this, Sean, and I also want to talk about.
35:42
SPEAKER_05: We had another letter come in from Marcus Hersberger that was talking about costs.
35:46
SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah.
35:47
SPEAKER_05: And I, you know, there's no magic button there either, but I think it is something we need to take a look at.
35:53
SPEAKER_05: Something I think it'd be cool to talk about.
35:55
SPEAKER_05: So let's kick the air conditioners on.
35:56
SPEAKER_05: We'll be right back.
35:58
SPEAKER_02: Inside David's brain.
36:00
SPEAKER_02: Long story short, my brain works.
36:02
SPEAKER_02: PhD.
36:03
SPEAKER_02: Literally physiological hyperfocus inputting into the neuroplasticity.
36:08
SPEAKER_02: Neuroplasticity.
36:09
SPEAKER_01: Inside David's brain, literally.
36:12
SPEAKER_02: Long, long story short.
36:13
SPEAKER_02: Thought literally changes this equation.
36:14
SPEAKER_02: Mind self-awareness.
36:16
SPEAKER_02: Literally neurologically.
36:17
SPEAKER_02: Empirically, the data would suggest Inside David's brain.
36:20
SPEAKER_01: Long, long, long, long story short.
36:22
SPEAKER_01: Literally, literally, literally, literally, literally, literally.
36:24
SPEAKER_01: Literally.
36:25
SPEAKER_02: So the best way to explain it would be like category by category.
36:30
SPEAKER_02: An example would be we'll start off in terms of thinking about the physical, which would be what does my body feel like right now compared to how does it need to feel in order to do the movements that I know I want to or have to do to break that target?
36:52
SPEAKER_02: Maybe some people listening to this uh answer and thinking, what does that even mean?
36:59
SPEAKER_02: And uh the the answer is honestly a lot different than you would like think.
37:07
SPEAKER_02: It's not a question of how does my body need to move.
37:12
SPEAKER_02: So it's not a I'm not trying to think about like okay, I need to be able to have good balance, equal weight distribution, rotate lower in my body, do this.
37:24
SPEAKER_02: That's not what I'm thinking about.
37:26
SPEAKER_02: I'm thinking about much more high level in terms of like zoomed out, much more simple.
37:33
SPEAKER_02: If I get very down into the details, then the inner monologue starts to sound like the intro to the segment.
37:40
SPEAKER_02: But if I zoom out and I think about things like categories of um my level of tension or my level of physical built-up energy.
37:56
SPEAKER_02: Like right now, as I'm talking right now, I am excited, I feel energized, I want to move, like I'm walking around my house right now because I can't sit still.
38:10
SPEAKER_02: That's a big time data point.
38:13
SPEAKER_02: If I was if I had to go shoot a 70-yard bird to win a world championship in the physical state that I'm in right now, I would not be able to have the level of finite control of the precision to be able to move that slow and that small.
38:41
SPEAKER_05: All right.
38:41
SPEAKER_05: Well, that's enough for that for this week.
38:43
SPEAKER_01: Inside David's Brave.
38:45
SPEAKER_05: All right, Sean, we're back.
38:47
SPEAKER_05: Um, hey, real quick, Sean.
38:48
SPEAKER_05: JTEC, um, our technology partner will be attending the Western Challenge on August 27th through the 30th at uh Gallatin Sporting Clays.
38:58
SPEAKER_05: Uh the link's up on Scorechaser.
39:00
SPEAKER_05: Um to accompany their attendance and boost engagement.
39:04
SPEAKER_05: JTEC is giving away a beefbox of choice cuts uh to the friends at Forward Farms USA or from the Friends at Forward Farms USA.
39:14
SPEAKER_05: The giveaway is free to enter with an email uh and will end on Wednesday, September the 2nd following the event.
39:22
SPEAKER_05: Uh the giveaway is open to shooters and clubs nationwide.
39:26
SPEAKER_05: Shooters can enter at jtech.digital slash beef.
39:30
SPEAKER_05: This page will go live when the giveaway starts Wednesday, September, or I'm sorry, Wednesday, July 22nd.
39:37
SPEAKER_05: The beef box will include two rib eyes, two top sirloins, two tenderloins, two new two New York strips, and a four-pack of beef patties.
39:45
SPEAKER_04: So ain't nothing wrong with having some grill grill grub.
39:48
SPEAKER_05: There's nothing wrong with that.
39:49
SPEAKER_05: Did you hear?
39:50
SPEAKER_05: Uh-huh.
39:50
SPEAKER_05: By the way, real quick, did you hear the episode that I did uh on the Texas State Championship?
39:57
SPEAKER_05: Uh I don't think so.
39:58
SPEAKER_05: Oh my gosh.
40:00
SPEAKER_05: So um working with a local uh beef, you know, cattle farmer.
40:07
SPEAKER_04: Right.
40:08
SPEAKER_05: Travis hooked up with this guy and they gave away an entire beef.
40:12
SPEAKER_04: I remember you mentioning it at our OSCA meeting as an idea for something we could do for Ohio State.
40:18
SPEAKER_04: And I think that would be a big draw because uh the way grocery prices are going these days, I don't think anybody's gonna turn down uh an opportunity to win some some food.
40:25
SPEAKER_05: I mean, with the freezer, I mean he said they literally had to sit on it to get the lid to close.
40:30
SPEAKER_05: That's awesome.
40:30
SPEAKER_05: It came with the freezer and everything, just like go.
40:33
SPEAKER_05: Here you go.
40:34
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
40:34
SPEAKER_05: How awesome! Cool.
40:36
SPEAKER_05: I'm all about it.
40:36
SPEAKER_05: I'd love it.
40:37
SPEAKER_05: What grocery prices are nowadays?
40:39
SPEAKER_05: Uh speaking of prices, uh, I wanted to uh get to this next letter that came in from Marcus Hirschberger, credit to him.
40:46
SPEAKER_05: And by the way, folks, don't be afraid to write us.
40:48
SPEAKER_05: These these fine folks that were bringing their name up, uh, they gave us, hey, mention us on air, we don't care.
40:55
SPEAKER_05: So, but if you want to remain anonymous, we can do that too.
40:59
SPEAKER_05: Um, but Marcus was talking about the cost of things, and he's not lying, he's not wrong, it is expensive.
41:05
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, not only the tournament cost itself, but you have the travel, right?
41:10
SPEAKER_05: Yep.
41:11
SPEAKER_05: There's ways to combat this.
41:13
SPEAKER_05: If you can travel with your buddies, I mean, you could share the rental car if you're flying in.
41:18
SPEAKER_05: Um, you can share a VRBO, which is way cheaper than a or Airbnb, which is cheaper than a hotel room.
41:25
SPEAKER_05: I mean, you can get Airbnbs at four or five bedrooms, you know, split that cost up, right?
41:31
SPEAKER_06: Yep.
41:31
SPEAKER_05: Um, you can share the golf cart.
41:33
SPEAKER_05: There's ways to to combat it, but it it's the bottom line is is you really kind of got to budget and pick and choose your battles.
41:40
SPEAKER_04: Well, and I think Marcus does it a little more on the extreme side than what most people are willing to do, to be honest with you.
41:44
SPEAKER_04: I mean, that guy, I mean, credit to him.
41:46
SPEAKER_04: His whole motto is if I can get by to save enough money, I might be able to afford another tournament that I can go shoot.
41:52
SPEAKER_04: And that's that's good logic.
41:54
unknown: Right.
41:54
SPEAKER_04: But I guess it depends on hey, can you pack up your car, drive, you know, out of state or wherever you're going, realize, okay, I'm gonna have the gas and the time and driving there, time off work or whatever it has to take to get there and back.
42:08
SPEAKER_04: Uh, and can you live while you're there super frugally?
42:14
SPEAKER_05: Minimal.
42:15
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
42:15
SPEAKER_04: I mean, like, so for some people, that might be, hey man, I'm gonna pitch a tent at the shooting at the shooting complex next to my car and sleep out there in the parking lot or whatever.
42:27
SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's getting a little extreme.
42:28
SPEAKER_04: It's getting a little extreme, but you it can be it can happen.
42:31
SPEAKER_04: It can be done.
42:31
SPEAKER_04: So if your budget doesn't allow you to go stay at the Hilton and have a you know, a thousand dollar a week car rental, you know, these are ways you can save money.
42:40
SPEAKER_04: Nobody likes to, you know, cut corners and everything, but if your budget doesn't allow, you really need to start looking at ways to save money.
42:46
SPEAKER_04: Packing your lunch instead of eating out, you know, making sure that you're and not to offend anybody, I mean, do whatever you can to cut costs.
42:54
SPEAKER_04: Bring your own shells, um, bring your take your laundry to the laundromat, you know, and you know, that kind of stuff.
43:00
SPEAKER_04: I mean, we all know that these are things that can be done, but I guess there's a certain there's a line that I draw as far as comfort and you know, traveling and stuff to where it's like I don't have to be first class, but at the same time, I really don't want to sleep in my car or something to to just to be there.
43:16
SPEAKER_05: I think this goes back with picking your battles, right?
43:19
SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, what are you chasing?
43:22
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like like Matt Miller said, are you are you chasing punches and patches or or are you just going for the experience?
43:30
SPEAKER_05: If you're going for the experience, you better go ahead and budget to have a nice room and a nice car and you know, a golf cart at 900 and some odd dollars a week.
43:40
SPEAKER_05: Yep.
43:41
SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, or if if that's too much money for you, then don't go.
43:45
SPEAKER_05: Right.
43:46
SPEAKER_05: You know, save your money for something more local.
43:48
SPEAKER_05: But if you want to go to one of these big shoots and you're going for the experience, then you need to go ahead and budget it.
43:53
SPEAKER_05: Say, hey, look, you know, I'm gonna forego five local tournaments so I can go to this big one or whatever the number is.
44:00
SPEAKER_04: And I think we've talked about it before several t on several occasions.
44:03
SPEAKER_04: Like if you do decide to go to the nationals or you do go decide to go down and do the Florida swing or something like that, because you can justify taking the family or the vacation, that's a great way to go.
44:13
SPEAKER_04: If you're already going to take a vacation, spend the money on a vacation, it's really not that much more to roll a little bit of a tournament experience in there if you're in the right place at the right time.
44:23
SPEAKER_05: Well, this is the first year that you didn't come down to Jack Lynx, but traditionally you and I and our wives and our families would get a VRBO.
44:32
SPEAKER_05: Yep.
44:33
SPEAKER_05: Uh we made sure we got one with a pool for the for the wife and kids, and and they went shopping during the day and they'd join us for dinner at night, and you know, we lived it up, but that was not cheap.
44:44
SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
44:45
SPEAKER_05: I mean, but it but again but it was our vacation.
44:47
SPEAKER_04: That's the thing.
44:48
SPEAKER_04: I mean, if you look at it as a family vacation, then you can justify it.
44:52
SPEAKER_04: Then you can justify a lot of it.
44:53
SPEAKER_04: If you're just going for yourself, sometimes you might look at that as being a little selfish or a little you know self-serving type of deal.
45:01
SPEAKER_04: Right.
45:01
SPEAKER_04: You know, and and and no uh nothing negative against people that do that all the time.
45:05
SPEAKER_04: Again, I still don't understand how people are able to travel the circuit all year long and spend you know 20, 30, 40 grand, you know, or more.
45:13
SPEAKER_05: Hey, listen, if this is your hobby and you can afford that, man, go for it.
45:16
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, good for you.
45:17
SPEAKER_04: Good for you.
45:18
SPEAKER_05: I'm there's no shot against people that can afford it.
45:21
SPEAKER_05: I'm you know, I'm even a little jealous of it.
45:23
SPEAKER_05: Right.
45:24
SPEAKER_05: You know, to be honest with you.
45:25
SPEAKER_05: Um, bottom line is you and I don't make enough money, and even if we did, we couldn't afford to take that kind of time to do that.
45:32
SPEAKER_04: No, no, and that's the thing.
45:34
SPEAKER_04: I mean, again, looking back at the the past year since we started the podcast, we had the opportunity to travel a lot, go to a lot of big shoots, went to the nationals, went to regionals, we went to state shoots, we traveled all over the place, got to meet a lot of great people and and fans of the show and all that stuff, and that was absolutely top-notch.
45:50
SPEAKER_04: But this year, again, I've taken a complete step back.
45:53
SPEAKER_04: Right, I've stayed local.
45:55
SPEAKER_04: Uh, the tournaments I've shot have all been at local clubs, and you know what?
45:59
SPEAKER_04: I still have fun doing it.
46:00
SPEAKER_04: That's what's important.
46:02
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's what the sport's all about.
46:03
SPEAKER_04: That's so again, I can I can I can budget to where I can do maybe one or two big shoots a year and not kill myself.
46:09
SPEAKER_05: Well, and credit to David Radulovich.
46:12
SPEAKER_05: Last week he even said, you know, when Sean can make it back out, we'll welcome.
46:16
SPEAKER_05: Right.
46:17
SPEAKER_05: You know, and that's the way the sport is.
46:18
SPEAKER_05: People come and go, you know, and we've seen that they hit different points of their life, and that's where you're at right now.
46:24
SPEAKER_05: Yep.
46:25
SPEAKER_05: I'm sure you'll be back.
46:26
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
46:27
SPEAKER_05: You know, but it's it's it's one of those things that's just like this is like I said, that that fine line between hobby and professional sport.
46:37
SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
46:38
SPEAKER_05: Let's face it, you and I, and about 90% of the people listening to this, are on the hobby side of it.
46:43
SPEAKER_05: That's right.
46:44
SPEAKER_05: So priorities in life are gonna dictate where you go, how much you shoot, how often you shoot.
46:50
SPEAKER_04: As they should.
46:51
SPEAKER_04: And and again, the people that are competing at the high level, they have sponsorship obligations.
46:55
SPEAKER_04: That's right.
46:56
SPEAKER_04: They have, you know, a lot of things that they are yeah, it's great to get a gun sponsorship and ammo sponsorship and all that stuff, but there's a lot of responsibility that comes with that.
47:04
SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
47:05
SPEAKER_04: As we've seen, as we've seen.
47:07
SPEAKER_05: And I, you know, and that's something else too, is like we've got some really great sponsors that help the show out, and and I feel guilty because I don't travel as much, but at the same time, producing a show every week that's that's crediting those sponsors is doing just as much as spending a shit ton of money, excuse my language, being at these shoots.
47:28
SPEAKER_04: Right.
47:29
SPEAKER_05: You know, because I can tell you right now, having their name on the back of my vest versus talking about this and reaching thousands of people every week is a very big difference.
47:37
SPEAKER_05: Yes.
47:37
SPEAKER_05: And you know, so I I'm I'm doing my part to fulfill my obligations on that end, but I still feel guilty for not being at something.
47:46
SPEAKER_05: I felt really bad about not going to the to the um to the worlds this year at San Antonio.
47:53
SPEAKER_05: But I mean, if I would have gone to that, that would have been four straight weeks of traveling.
47:58
SPEAKER_05: You know, I mean, I it's like I can't do it, you know.
48:00
SPEAKER_04: Well, I have a family at home too.
48:02
SPEAKER_04: And again, uh you and I were in the unique position of uh doing the podcast together that it was almost expected of us to try to.
48:09
SPEAKER_04: I mean, people hit us up all the time.
48:10
SPEAKER_04: You come to this one, you come to that one.
48:12
SPEAKER_04: I mean, we had so many opportunities to go to every daggone shoot in the country, but the reality was, hey guys, we just we can't do that much.
48:19
SPEAKER_05: Oh, Sean, you should have seen how many comments and phone calls and text messages and emails and crap that I got for not going to the world.
48:27
SPEAKER_04: Well, uh, but you know, at the same time, it's like, look, you do what you can.
48:30
SPEAKER_04: Everybody has to understand that we all have different budgets to live within, different time constraints, different responsibilities.
48:35
SPEAKER_04: And that's where I'm at right now.
48:36
SPEAKER_04: I'm focusing more on the business, focusing more on my wife and our our home life and stuff, trying to make sure that that's all going well.
48:42
SPEAKER_04: And once I get some things under wraps and I I get a few things tucked away, I think I'll be okay.
48:47
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I'll be able to come back out and spend more time.
48:49
SPEAKER_04: I haven't quit shooting altogether.
48:51
SPEAKER_05: Right.
48:51
SPEAKER_04: And it has nothing to do with me not liking it because I do love to shoot, but it hasn't been a bad thing taking a break.
48:57
SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, it's like everybody gave me crap because I went to Texas State before the worlds, and I didn't go to Worlds.
49:03
SPEAKER_05: Um, guess what?
49:04
SPEAKER_05: The worlds is gonna be in San Antonio, and guess where I'm gonna be in October, right?
49:08
SPEAKER_05: I've never been to the Texas State shoot number one, I've never been to Travis's place.
49:12
SPEAKER_05: That was the last shoot that he was gonna have at that location before he moved, so there was some good reasons there.
49:19
SPEAKER_05: Now, here's one for you.
49:20
SPEAKER_05: We're talking about budget.
49:22
SPEAKER_05: I put everything on a certain card for all my travel, all my expenses, everything included for when I go to a chute.
49:28
SPEAKER_05: With that comes airline miles.
49:30
SPEAKER_04: Yep.
49:31
SPEAKER_05: So that Texas State shoot, I used my airline miles, didn't cost me a penny to fly out.
49:35
SPEAKER_05: Well, I got my airline miles to get it.
49:38
SPEAKER_04: You paid for it in other ways, right?
49:39
SPEAKER_05: I paid for it in other ways, but I was able to use that credit.
49:42
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay.
49:43
SPEAKER_05: I stayed with friends.
49:45
SPEAKER_05: Very big thank you to Britton Brandon.
49:47
SPEAKER_05: Love you all to death.
49:49
SPEAKER_05: Thank you so much for letting me stay.
49:51
SPEAKER_05: You want to talk about welcoming people, dude.
49:53
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
49:54
SPEAKER_05: And I got to stay at their home.
49:55
SPEAKER_05: They insisted that I ride with them so I didn't have a rental car.
49:58
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I always say hi to them since we met them years ago.
50:01
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I they insisted I rode in a buggy.
50:03
SPEAKER_05: So, okay, there I went buggy, rental car, and hotel gone.
50:07
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
50:08
SPEAKER_05: Right?
50:08
SPEAKER_05: I used airline miles.
50:10
SPEAKER_05: There's four major expenses gone.
50:13
SPEAKER_05: I had to bring ammo.
50:16
SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
50:17
SPEAKER_05: So it's like, why didn't I go to that shoot, right?
50:19
SPEAKER_05: Right.
50:20
SPEAKER_05: If I would have gone to San Antonio, it would have cost me six thousand dollars.
50:22
SPEAKER_06: Right.
50:24
SPEAKER_05: So I mean, you know, hey, pick and choose.
50:26
SPEAKER_05: Pick and choose your battles.
50:27
SPEAKER_05: Pick and choose.
50:28
SPEAKER_05: So um speaking to sponsor Sean, you know, we developed quite a list.
50:34
SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, it's it's much more expanded than what it used to be.
50:37
SPEAKER_05: Yes, and without these great folks, there's no way we could put on the show.

51:12
SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
51:13
SPEAKER_05: Would it would it be proper for me to do so?
51:15
SPEAKER_05: I don't think it would.
51:17
SPEAKER_05: Maybe we'll let your wife buy it or something, or your dad or something.
51:19
SPEAKER_04: Oh, if she yeah, if she would win or something, I'm sure that would only raise a lot of questions if you don't want to answer.
51:24
SPEAKER_05: That's true.
51:25
SPEAKER_05: All right, we'll just get away from that subject.
