- 0:00Speaker 1: Well.
- 0:00Speaker 2: Tehran says it will retaliate. After the US military attacked
- 0:05Speaker 2: and seized an Iranian cargo ship yesterday, the President claimed
- 0:09Speaker 2: on social media that the ship was attempting to get
- 0:11Speaker 2: past the American blockade of Iran's ports and coastline. That
- 0:16Speaker 2: action is threatening a second round of peace talks for
- 0:19Speaker 2: planned for today in Pakistan. The White House says Vice
- 0:22Speaker 2: President j d Vance is leading the delegation, after President
- 0:25Speaker 2: Trump initially told reporters yesterday the Vice President would not
- 0:29Speaker 2: be traveling to the Middle East, but a spokesman for
- 0:32Speaker 2: the Iranian Foreign Ministries has said that Iran has no
- 0:35Speaker 2: plans for another round of negotiations with the US. All
- 0:39Speaker 2: of this has oil prices rising this morning, with markets
- 0:43Speaker 2: in both the US and internationally jumping five percent, sitting
- 0:48Speaker 2: right now at around eighty eight and ninety six dollars
- 0:52Speaker 2: a barrel. The Trump administration, meanwhile, has again lifted sanctions
- 0:56Speaker 2: on Russian oil for thirty days. That is, despite Treasury
- 1:00Speaker 2: Secretary Scott Bessant ruling out that move. Vowing to rule
- 1:05Speaker 2: it out while speaking to reporters Wednesday at the White House.
- 1:10Speaker 3: We will not be renewing the general license on Russian oil,
- 1:14Speaker 3: and we will not be renewing the general license on
- 1:16Speaker 3: a Rainian oil against that was oil that was on
- 1:20Speaker 3: the water prior to Marshall Levenars, so all that has
- 1:24Speaker 3: been used.
- 1:27Speaker 4: So it's very clear Donald Trump is doing everything he
- 1:31Speaker 4: can do to help Vladimir Putin at a time when
- 1:36Speaker 4: Vladimir Putin finds himself backed into a corner because of
- 1:39Speaker 4: an ongoing war in Ukraine, a war that he thought
- 1:44Speaker 4: was going to be over in three days. It continues
- 1:46Speaker 4: to drag on a year after year. The Trump administration
- 1:50Speaker 4: has been lying for over a year saying that Don
- 1:53Speaker 4: Boss is about to fall. They've continued to lie about
- 1:56Speaker 4: Russia's ability. They've continued to lie about how strong Russia is.
- 1:59Speaker 4: They've continued to lie about how strong Vladimir Putin is.
- 2:02Speaker 4: They've continued to lie about how the Ukrainians have to
- 2:05Speaker 4: back down and do everything they can and just hope
- 2:08Speaker 4: for a piece deal with the Russians. They've continued to
- 2:11Speaker 4: lie about the strength of the economy, the Russian economies,
- 2:14Speaker 4: and tatters that continue to lie about Putin's stability in Russia.
- 2:17Speaker 4: It is at an all time low right now. And
- 2:21Speaker 4: so what do they do they give him another thirty
- 2:23Speaker 4: day lifeline after lying to the American people about not
- 2:26Speaker 4: giving him another thirty day lifeline. It just continues. This
- 2:31Speaker 4: war could be over. Putin could have been forced to
- 2:34Speaker 4: the negotiating table. I know a lot of people in
- 2:36Speaker 4: the past that Putin's going to do what Putin's going
- 2:38Speaker 4: to do, A deal could have been struck. But you know,
- 2:44Speaker 4: Donald Trump himself and people around him, continue to despise
- 2:48Speaker 4: the freedom fighters, continue to despise the Ukrainians, continue to
- 2:52Speaker 4: despise Zelenski, continue to despise the very people that were
- 2:57Speaker 4: invaded by Vladimir Putin's Russian invaders. And as I've said
- 3:03Speaker 4: time and time began on this program, if they didn't
- 3:06Speaker 4: hate the Ukrainian freedom fighters so much, they wouldn't have
- 3:10Speaker 4: stumbled blindly into Iran thinking that they were going to
- 3:14Speaker 4: be able to just knock ran over in three or
- 3:16Speaker 4: four days or in two weeks.
- 3:19Speaker 1: They would have looked at.
- 3:21Speaker 4: What the Ukrainians did, like the Secretary of Army and said,
- 3:23Speaker 4: my god, they've changed the very face of warfare. And
- 3:26Speaker 4: in changing the very face of warfare, they have sent
- 3:30Speaker 4: a real warning signal to us, which we will take
- 3:34Speaker 4: heed of and the president keeps making up wars that
- 3:38Speaker 4: he ended when he won't end the one war he
- 3:41Speaker 4: has the power and leverage to end, and that is
- 3:45Speaker 4: the one between Vladimir Putins, Russian invaders and the Ukrainians.
- 3:52Speaker 4: He just refuses to do it. And Admiral Kirby I
- 3:56Speaker 4: have no idea why he continue use collect Vladimir Putin
- 4:03Speaker 4: off the hook when the Russian leader is so weak
- 4:07Speaker 4: right now, now, look.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Putin wants three things. He wants Ukraine obviously, he wants
- 4:12Speaker 5: to divide the West, and he wants to rebuild from
- 4:14Speaker 5: a wartime economy to a more stable economy.
- 4:16Speaker 1: And many of the.
- 4:17Speaker 5: Decisions that this administration has made in the last fifteen
- 4:20Speaker 5: sixteen months have actually aided him in all three of
- 4:23Speaker 5: those ways, including Besson's you know, extension now of the
- 4:26Speaker 5: waivers here and lifting of the oil sanctions. But to
- 4:31Speaker 5: your point, the war could have could have been ended,
- 4:35Speaker 5: but it would have required things of mister Trump that
- 4:39Speaker 5: I just don't think he's capable of exploring. And one
- 4:42Speaker 5: of them is supporting Zelinsky. I mean, there's a there's
- 4:45Speaker 5: a grudge share that goes way way back to his
- 4:47Speaker 5: first administration with President Zelinsky and Ukraine in general, and
- 4:51Speaker 5: so not supporting them militarily has definitely caused the stasis
- 4:56Speaker 5: that we're seeing along the Donbas, the eastern and the
- 4:58Speaker 5: southern part of Ukraine, and the fact that either side
- 5:00Speaker 5: has really made much progress, but the war drags on,
- 5:03Speaker 5: and again that benefits Vladimir Putin. That's exactly what he wants.
- 5:07Speaker 5: And these the castigating of allies, the lack of pulling
- 5:11Speaker 5: together some kind of international coalition to help in Iran,
- 5:15Speaker 5: all of that also satisfies Putin's desires to further divide
- 5:19Speaker 5: the Western and to divide NATO. I go back to
- 5:21Speaker 5: my trip to Europe this past week speaking to NATO officers,
- 5:25Speaker 5: military officers, I mean they're moving on.
- 5:28Speaker 1: They're moving on without.
- 5:29Speaker 5: The United States, Joe. They see a future in the
- 5:32Speaker 5: Alliance that either has a very minimal American leadership or presence,
- 5:36Speaker 5: or maybe even none, and they are adjusting their realities
- 5:40Speaker 5: to that, and that is exactly what Vladimir Putin wants.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Well and Caddy, the Europeans saw you had the President
- 5:48Speaker 4: of the United States, the Vice President of the United States,
- 5:50Speaker 4: the Secretary of State of the United States, all going
- 5:53Speaker 4: to Hungary. All trying desperately to help a man get
- 5:57Speaker 4: re elected is prim during that country, a man who
- 6:02Speaker 4: told Vladimir Putin basically, I will be your foreign agent here.
- 6:08Speaker 4: The same thing with Lavrov having conversations with his foreign minister,
- 6:13Speaker 4: with Hungary's foreign minister, they were nothing but Putin's dupes.
- 6:17Speaker 4: They were doing everything they could do to help Vladimir
- 6:20Speaker 4: Putin from Hungary to stop every bill that could have
- 6:24Speaker 4: gone through, every funding mechanism that could have gone through
- 6:27Speaker 4: the EU to help the Ukrainians out. It was constantly
- 6:31Speaker 4: orbon standing in the way. And you actually had Donald
- 6:36Speaker 4: Trump and Vladimir Putin both desperately trying to help this
- 6:41Speaker 4: man who was desperately trying to help the Russian invaders.
- 6:46Speaker 6: Yeah, you had the irony during the election in Hungary
- 6:48Speaker 6: that you had jd Events, the Vice President of the
- 6:51Speaker 6: United States, and officers of the GIU, the Russian security services,
- 6:56Speaker 6: both in Budapest at the same time with the same
- 6:59Speaker 6: aim to get Victor Orband elected. And they didn't. And
- 7:02Speaker 6: maybe we'll look back, Joe and think twenty twenty six
- 7:05Speaker 6: was the year of peak popularism. And you've got the
- 7:07Speaker 6: midterm elections in America here coming up that will deal
- 7:10Speaker 6: a blow to populism. You've had the defeat of victor
- 7:13Speaker 6: Orband despite the White House light weighing in that is
- 7:17Speaker 6: also a blow to populism. But Admiral Kirby's quite right.
- 7:21Speaker 6: The net outcome of this escapade that Donald Trump undertook,
- 7:26Speaker 6: this war of choice that he undertook in around the
- 7:28Speaker 6: biggest outcome of it is that it's benefited Russia and
- 7:32Speaker 6: it's benefited China and Mark. One of the things that
- 7:35Speaker 6: is so interesting as we head into this incredibly confusing
- 7:38Speaker 6: week which we really don't know about the Strait, We
- 7:41Speaker 6: don't know about the negotiations, but I keep thinking and
- 7:43Speaker 6: listening back about those negotiations. The White House has been
- 7:48Speaker 6: telling reporters that they're very optimistic, and they were very
- 7:52Speaker 6: optimistic last time around that Vance and the Iranians who
- 7:56Speaker 6: were sent were very close, they almost had some kind
- 7:58Speaker 6: of a deal. Part of me wonders whether that was
- 8:02Speaker 6: just misinformation being spread by the administration because we know
- 8:06Speaker 6: how long it took last time it took twenty months
- 8:09Speaker 6: of direct negotiations to get the JCPOA. Were they really
- 8:13Speaker 6: that close and even if they were closed last time around,
- 8:16Speaker 6: what are the chances for negotiations this week as we
- 8:18Speaker 6: come into as we come head into Pakistan.
- 8:21Speaker 1: So so, Katy, you know, I bought in on Friday
- 8:24Speaker 1: to the same kind of optimism that I think so
- 8:26Speaker 1: many others did as well. I mean, there was kind
- 8:27Speaker 1: of repeated efforts by US officials on background to basically
- 8:31Speaker 1: the entire Washington press corps that things were rather optimistic,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and then they all fell apart. So you do have
- 8:37Speaker 1: to ask yourself, you know, why was this just spin?
- 8:40Speaker 1: Were they trying to do? And I hate to bring
- 8:42Speaker 1: this up at market manipulation? You know, obviously Donald Trump
- 8:45Speaker 1: cares about the price of gas being low, oil prices
- 8:48Speaker 1: going down, the stock market going up, all those things happened.
- 8:51Speaker 1: It could be that there also is the notion that,
- 8:53Speaker 1: of course there was a dissension even within the Iranian ranks.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Perhaps they were hearing this from certain Iranians they were
- 8:59Speaker 1: talking to. But we've seen over the last twenty four
- 9:01Speaker 1: hours the IRGC, the hardline elements, seemed to be in control,
- 9:04Speaker 1: those with guns make the decisions, and Bahiti, the RGC chief,
- 9:08Speaker 1: seems to be the one calling the shots now. So
- 9:11Speaker 1: it could be a combination of all of those, But
- 9:14Speaker 1: at the end of the day, I think we have
- 9:15Speaker 1: to be cautious when we do hear this kind of
- 9:17Speaker 1: spin from the White House, even if these are sources
- 9:19Speaker 1: that the press have, because the enemy, the Iranians, get
- 9:22Speaker 1: a vote, and I think it turns out at the
- 9:24Speaker 1: end of the day that might not have been accurately.
- 9:26Speaker 1: What's happening. One quick point with what Joe said about
- 9:29Speaker 1: David Ignatius. I always have to bring this up. He
- 9:31Speaker 1: wrote a book about his time in Beirut in nineteen
- 9:34Speaker 1: eighty three, the bombing of the US Embassy barracks. It's
- 9:36Speaker 1: called Agents of Innocence. It's about the CIA, the role
- 9:38Speaker 1: there that the CIA had in recruiting agents. I gave
- 9:42Speaker 1: that book to every young case officer whoever worked for
- 9:45Speaker 1: me when I was the deputy op chief of the
- 9:47Speaker 1: Neeres Division, and so David a little bit younger, but
- 9:51Speaker 1: his impact is pretty profound, all right.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Ms NOW National Security and Intelligence Analysts retired CIA officer
- 9:59Speaker 2: Mark Moropolis and ms NOW National Security analyst retired Rear
- 10:04Speaker 2: Admiral John Kirby, thank you both very much for coming
- 10:08Speaker 2: on this morning.
