- 0:35Speaker 1: E dot com. I'm gonna have Krin set up a
- 0:41Speaker 1: complaint hotline where people could complain about dirt myth.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Oh whoa, let me tell you why.
- 0:48Speaker 2: It's be a short list.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Man, we.
- 0:51Speaker 2: What what?
- 0:52Speaker 3: What do you doing? What do you got going on
- 0:53Speaker 3: with the chest?
- 0:55Speaker 1: Okay, so our plan? A year ago, a year ago
- 1:02Speaker 1: to almost to the to the t we recorded an
- 1:06Speaker 1: episode traveling down the highway in Alaska in a van.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Mm hmm, great.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Episode, great episode.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of energy, Yeah, a lot of energy.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Great episode, little road trip. Very successful. I know this
- 1:24Speaker 1: is a very successful episode. Some people say the most
- 1:28Speaker 1: successful episode. Really podcast, I'm trying to make it seem
- 1:34Speaker 1: like you know, I'm really kind of like trying to
- 1:36Speaker 1: build up so people get extra mad at Dirt. The
- 1:39Speaker 1: plan was, we're gonna do that the same thing, the
- 1:43Speaker 1: second annual, same stretch of highway, same time of year show.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Uh well we.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Get just getting ready to do it, and now a
- 1:54Speaker 1: little complication. The meantime is now we launched these episodes.
- 1:57Speaker 1: These episodes are available on YouTube video.
- 2:01Speaker 3: An old Dirt can't do myth, it's never been men
- 2:07Speaker 3: says that it can't be done.
- 2:09Speaker 2: It can be done with what we got going on?
- 2:13Speaker 3: What do you button into?
- 2:14Speaker 2: This forces the senator record straight.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I've been watching driving scenes since Strange Brew.
- 2:23Speaker 2: With a lot of gear behind that scene.
- 2:26Speaker 1: There's a driving scene in Strange Brew. I've been watching
- 2:30Speaker 1: driving scenes since I was a little kid.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Scooby Doo cartoon man.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Well, okay, never mind that example, Hazard Dukes of Hazzard.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I've been watching driving scenes my whole life. Somehow, Dirt
- 2:45Speaker 1: says they can't be made.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Not in our set, not with the equipment that we have.
- 2:52Speaker 1: So we're stuck filming. Not that I have any problem
- 2:54Speaker 1: with this. We're in a little bunk house.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Pretty cool mm hmm. Airplanes fly around.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Static.
- 3:02Speaker 1: We're gonna make We're gonna make do a lot of
- 3:04Speaker 1: listeners know that the reason you're not getting served up
- 3:07Speaker 1: another phenomenal mediator podcast, Van Life, episode Part two is
- 3:11Speaker 1: because of dirt.
- 3:14Speaker 2: You'd get carsick if you watch that episode, it.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Would be a little bouncy.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I don't think that's fair because I don't.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Mean if we told people where we're at, like the
- 3:22Speaker 3: general vicinity of the planet Earth, we're in eastern Alaska. Yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 4: No, I just think that it's not fair to blame
- 3:31Speaker 4: that on dirt, that this podcast isn't happening in a
- 3:34Speaker 4: vein because of him.
- 3:35Speaker 3: But what do you think the problem.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Is, Well, there's a lot more that would have to
- 3:38Speaker 4: go into it to be able to film that. Yeah,
- 3:41Speaker 4: there would have to be special camera rigs set up and.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Send your complaints to h.
- 3:50Speaker 1: H okay, a lot of feedback. You were you there?
- 3:56Speaker 1: You know you weren't there. We interviewed the esteemed historian
- 3:58Speaker 1: Elliott West.
- 3:59Speaker 3: No there. It was a great episode.
- 4:02Speaker 1: On that episode, I debuted an old saying I came
- 4:05Speaker 1: up with I'm trying to like get an old saying going,
- 4:09Speaker 1: like I made one up. Well, I made up saying.
- 4:14Speaker 1: It's new, but it's like an old saying. And it
- 4:17Speaker 1: was what prompted it was like, if you tell your
- 4:21Speaker 1: kids to go out and pick the pole beans.
- 4:24Speaker 3: And they you'd be like, well, how many do I pick?
- 4:26Speaker 3: I might pick all of them, put them all.
- 4:29Speaker 1: They'll come in and be like I picked them all,
- 4:31Speaker 1: and you go out there and look and they didn't
- 4:33Speaker 1: get them all. No way, Or you'd say someone's like
- 4:37Speaker 1: I'll go pick strawberries. I'm like, pick them all and
- 4:41Speaker 1: they go dig around on the strawberry bad and then
- 4:43Speaker 1: you go, look, they didn't get them all.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Yep.
- 4:45Speaker 1: So my old saying I came up with is a
- 4:48Speaker 1: fresh set of eyes will.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Always find more beans. And I'm like trying to get
- 4:54Speaker 3: it going. I'll use that people don't like it, I'll
- 4:57Speaker 3: prostalyze that what people just the family.
- 4:59Speaker 1: People wrote in. My wife doesn't like it. She thinks stupid.
- 5:03Speaker 2: That's important.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Phil says, it's got no like, it doesn't roll off
- 5:06Speaker 1: the tongue.
- 5:10Speaker 3: I mean it could be helpful though, because a lot
- 5:12Speaker 3: of human life is spent looking for lost stuff. I
- 5:15Speaker 3: mean a fair I'd say twenty percent of life. People
- 5:17Speaker 3: wrote in with some edits.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Yeah Saint Anthony, remember we talked about this, say that St.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Anthony deal stuff at camp.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it's dirt knows this. Yeah, Saint Anthony, say Anthony,
- 5:29Speaker 4: police come around, something's been lost and cannot be found.
- 5:33Speaker 4: And then at a bam and say that while you're
- 5:35Speaker 4: looking for something, you find it.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's a that's a that's a Catholic saying.
- 5:42Speaker 4: And Clay mentioned that he goes right to the big
- 5:44Speaker 4: he goes straight to the bottle.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Yeah, he cuts, he circumvents, he goes around, cuts around
- 5:50Speaker 1: the middleman.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. Some edits came in. It's getting better.
- 5:57Speaker 1: So what I'll say is it has applicability and find
- 6:00Speaker 1: And somebody even pointed out for sure, like even be
- 6:03Speaker 1: encounters has ability in finance, like like you're looking for
- 6:06Speaker 1: your deductions, you know, look at tax time you're.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Looking for it's always But what about that new wall
- 6:14Speaker 3: that you bought, You carry you work stuff in that wall.
- 6:17Speaker 3: That's a business expense.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Count that beans, so fresh set of eyes will always
- 6:20Speaker 1: find more beans. I thought it had a lot of
- 6:23Speaker 1: broad He thought it had applicability in glassing. Someone's like, no,
- 6:26Speaker 1: a glass that whole hillside, nothing up there and away right,
- 6:34Speaker 1: So Edits came in a new view gathers more beans. No, No,
- 6:41Speaker 1: a second look invested brings more beans digested.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I like clever, but yeah.
- 6:50Speaker 3: A fresh set of eyes will always find the prize.
- 6:55Speaker 2: No bean mentioned.
- 6:57Speaker 3: New eyes find new beans.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Too, boring.
- 7:03Speaker 3: A fresh set of eyes, we'll see where the beans lie.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Or my buddy Matt DROs wrote in he said, also,
- 7:16Speaker 1: this is a text message I got. I appreciated the
- 7:19Speaker 1: relatability of your made up old saying about relooking for beans.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Whether it's beans, pickles, by which I think he means cucumbers,
- 7:28Speaker 1: morel's or whatever. One highly tuned in individual can always
- 7:33Speaker 1: find more, even after someone just quote picked them all.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Maybe the saying should be a fresh set of eyes
- 7:40Speaker 1: yields more of the prize.
- 7:43Speaker 2: That's preaking. I think there should be Jack and the
- 7:45Speaker 2: beanstalk somewhere in there. That's not gonna work there, that's
- 7:48Speaker 2: a magic bean man.
- 7:54Speaker 1: A couple announcements and clear you're gonna be here for
- 7:57Speaker 1: some of this. We have a live tour coming up. Uh,
- 8:04Speaker 1: this is gonna be great fun. Clay's gonna hit something,
- 8:06Speaker 1: but he's gonna be out wolf trapping for some of it.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Me and Dirt, Oh, you and dirt gonna be wolf
- 8:12Speaker 3: trapping me and dirt. We're like mud and clay. Dirt
- 8:18Speaker 3: and mud, dirt and clay. You get kind of dry clay,
- 8:23Speaker 3: kind of loamy.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Yeah, better for some plants to grow in. Yep.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Clay's working on a Bear Grease road show about uh,
- 8:32Speaker 3: he's he's profiling a wolf trapper. He's he's working on
- 8:35Speaker 3: a Bear Grease road show about a wolf trapper. So

- 8:54Speaker 1: putting everything together. He'll be there for the shows. Spencer

- 10:49Speaker 1: It's gonna be big man laughs. Trivia prize winning funny stuff.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Another thing we're working on this this week. Need this
- 11:03Speaker 1: is a listener we we this is listener help. I've
- 11:06Speaker 1: been thinking about doing We've been thinking about starting a
- 11:08Speaker 1: thing that'd be a part of the show, which would
- 11:11Speaker 1: be a dissection of trailcam mysteries, because we get a
- 11:15Speaker 1: lot of these where people send in trail camp.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Phones, like what the hell is that? Is that a
- 11:21Speaker 3: mountain lion?
- 11:22Speaker 2: Sam squatch? Ones too, pray yep?
- 11:24Speaker 1: Is that a sasquatch? Is that a mountain lion? Why
- 11:27Speaker 1: is that Buck? What's wrong with his eye? I recently
- 11:29Speaker 1: got one where Bucks at one of that that there's
- 11:31Speaker 1: a weird virus that deer get like it's like a
- 11:33Speaker 1: like a part of the herpes complex that makes their
- 11:37Speaker 1: eyes get all this growth over them. So someone sent
- 11:39Speaker 1: that in, right, or someone might send in is that
- 11:42Speaker 1: a bobcat? Or it's like they're like, is that an
- 11:44Speaker 1: old naked hippie whatever, And you can't tell what's going on?
- 11:49Speaker 2: Just Clay Nukeles picking the beans out there, fresh.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Out of us.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So what we need are we need your We need
- 12:01Speaker 1: your trail cam mysteries. And here's the thing, here's the
- 12:03Speaker 1: brand promise. When you send us a trail cam mystery
- 12:06Speaker 1: if winds up being like biological in nature or whatever
- 12:09Speaker 1: like this herpes complex, deal that blind's deer or cactus bucks,
- 12:14Speaker 1: whatever crazy stuff from your trail camp or what is
- 12:18Speaker 1: that is that a mountain lion? Questions we will get
- 12:22Speaker 1: We will go through our contacts of many biologists and
- 12:26Speaker 1: experts and ecologists, disease specialists, whatever hippie experts, naked hippie experts.
- 12:37Speaker 1: We will get you the answer. Then we will post
- 12:42Speaker 1: We will post your photo with the feedback and we
- 12:45Speaker 1: will cover it and discuss the photo on the podcast
- 12:48Speaker 1: to get you a great answer of of like like
- 12:52Speaker 1: whatever it.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Is from the experts.
- 12:55Speaker 3: With everyone just you. Yeah.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Well, I what kicked us off is the other day
- 13:01Speaker 1: I had a great trail camphoto from my otter cam
- 13:05Speaker 1: where I couldn't tell if it was a beaver's butt
- 13:07Speaker 1: or an odds butt mm hmm, And it sparked a
- 13:11Speaker 1: little bit of a spirit debate about whether that's the
- 13:14Speaker 1: butt of an otter or the butt of a beaver.
- 13:16Speaker 1: So that got me thinking that this would be a
- 13:18Speaker 1: great service and I would have submitted my own photo
- 13:22Speaker 1: to expert panel, which I did because I just through
- 13:24Speaker 1: professionally I know a lot of great people.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Oh yeah, so I sent it to a guy.
- 13:27Speaker 1: That has handled thousands and thousands of beavers and hundreds
- 13:31Speaker 1: of otters and ask them, well, whose butt that was?
- 13:34Speaker 2: Right?
- 13:34Speaker 1: We will be able to provide this service for listeners
- 13:37Speaker 1: who have crazy trail camphotos. All you need to do
- 13:40Speaker 1: is go to send it. Send your trail camphoto. Just
- 13:45Speaker 1: put the title like crazy trail camphoto or whatever and
- 13:48Speaker 1: send it to the met Eater podcast at the meaeater
- 13:51Speaker 1: dot com. The meat Eater podcast at the meeater dot
- 13:54Speaker 1: com also complaints about dirt can go there as well. Hey, so,
- 13:59Speaker 1: do like complaint dirt in the subject line or if
- 14:02Speaker 1: it's trail cam just trail camlet me let me.
- 14:06Speaker 3: I could probably be of help. I'm not an expert
- 14:09Speaker 3: at a whole of many things, but I am the
- 14:11Speaker 3: world's expert, the best in the world. I'll debate anybody
- 14:17Speaker 3: on this fact at identifying American black panther trail camera photos.
- 14:22Speaker 3: You send me a feeline that you suspect is an
- 14:26Speaker 3: American black panther, I will and you'll take it to you.
- 14:32Speaker 3: You'll take it to your father. Yeah, Well, I mean
- 14:34Speaker 3: I have people, but I get them all the time.
- 14:38Speaker 4: As we're talking about this, I had a couple of
- 14:40Speaker 4: trail cam photos come in on the cell camera as
- 14:43Speaker 4: we're talking. No, it's pretty straightforward. It's a white tailed
- 14:48Speaker 4: dough and a cow elk in the field together.
- 14:50Speaker 3: God nice.
- 14:52Speaker 1: So that's a service that we're going to provide. And
- 14:54Speaker 1: when when your thing gets selected, you know, we'll even
- 14:57Speaker 1: send you some kind of present. I'm gonna regret saying that, say,
- 15:00Speaker 1: some kind of president. If your think gets selected, we'll
- 15:02Speaker 1: post a photo, we will get expert testimony, and we
- 15:05Speaker 1: will have an actual debate and explanation.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Of the photo.
- 15:10Speaker 1: And if you watch on YouTube, we'll just have the
- 15:12Speaker 1: photo up if you listen, you just go on social
- 15:15Speaker 1: media to view the photo and weigh in and what
- 15:16Speaker 1: the hell you're looking at? It's called I think we
- 15:19Speaker 1: should call it the what in the hell is this thing?
- 15:21Speaker 1: From my trail cam?
- 15:23Speaker 2: Simple? Yeah, everyone wins in this something like that.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Y'all didn't get the punchline to my black panther deal.
- 15:31Speaker 3: There are no black panthers in America. So the answer
- 15:35Speaker 3: is always why did I buy that believer hat?
- 15:38Speaker 2: That's not what Gary Nucer says.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Believe them? Why do we sell a black panther believer
- 15:45Speaker 3: hack just I mean half of this country believes in them,
- 15:49Speaker 3: and my dad's like the president.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I once read we've talked about this, but I once
- 15:55Speaker 1: read or someone said, a black panther is a wet panther. M.
- 16:00Speaker 3: What do you think about that? It's a wet mount line.
- 16:03Speaker 3: I mean, I hear you they could be. It's definitely
- 16:08Speaker 3: make them darker. You don't think that that's always no, No,
- 16:14Speaker 3: I think people are seeing uh, they're seeing black house cats.
- 16:18Speaker 3: They're seeing labrador mix breed dogs like flashing in front
- 16:23Speaker 3: of their camera and like a streaky photo that makes
- 16:26Speaker 3: his tail look a little longer than it is. M.
- 16:29Speaker 3: They're seeing usually it is off scale feline house cats
- 16:38Speaker 3: that that just it looks big in the in the picture,
- 16:41Speaker 3: but it's actually not big.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Or if you hear one that you think as a panther.
- 16:44Speaker 3: See people don't you know the vocalizations of the mountain lions. Sure,
- 16:49Speaker 3: they vocalize, but so do bobcats, and so I think
- 16:55Speaker 3: a lot of people mistake the bark of a gray
- 16:58Speaker 3: fox for some top of big cat.
- 17:01Speaker 2: God.
- 17:02Speaker 3: I mean, gray foxes make a kind of a harrowing.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Mhm.
- 17:08Speaker 3: You do that a little louder. It's kind of like that.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Drink. It sounds like throwing up.
- 17:18Speaker 3: It's like a it's too much thunderwater. Filter it out.
- 17:24Speaker 3: It's kind of a it's an odd sound you wouldn't
- 17:26Speaker 3: expect coming from a little gray fox. I think people
- 17:29Speaker 3: think that's a panther screen.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Yeah, they want to believe it it's a panther.
- 17:33Speaker 1: They want to believe this is a this is an announcement, Rich,
- 17:36Speaker 1: This is a where you're in an announcement, Rich bunk house.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Right now, A new Dirty dozen calendar for twenty twenty
- 17:44Speaker 1: four has been on sale at the Medior store. Go
- 17:47Speaker 1: get one hour, Get five now.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Cow. So we do calendars.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Years ago we did fucked up old Your stands great calendar,
- 17:59Speaker 1: I mean fucked up old t acid ermy phenomenal calendar.
- 18:03Speaker 1: But this year it's just so happened that and this
- 18:05Speaker 1: is gonna tie somewhere and talk about now it just
- 18:07Speaker 1: so happened, that just so happens that you got how
- 18:10Speaker 1: many months are in a year, Clay twelve twelve?
- 18:14Speaker 3: OKAYU hold that in.
- 18:15Speaker 1: The back of your head and try to stay with you.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Twelve months in a year. We are just now releasing
- 18:22Speaker 3: season twelve of Meat Eater. Twelve years. You've been doing it, Steve, and.
- 18:28Speaker 1: The way we do it is a season winds up
- 18:30Speaker 1: be in a year's worth of episodes. It could be
- 18:33Speaker 1: you know, it could be in the old days, we
- 18:35Speaker 1: might have done sixteen, we might do six whatever, but
- 18:39Speaker 1: we do It's like a season is a year's worth
- 18:41Speaker 1: of episodes. We we vacated our theme. I wanted to
- 18:47Speaker 1: do fucked up old fish, cleaning stations in boats and.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Just people.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Fucked up on individuals.
- 19:00Speaker 3: But the whole franchise is on hold because of the
- 19:03Speaker 3: fortuitous like the serendipitous deal that twelve seasons aligns with
- 19:11Speaker 3: the twelve months of the year. So we've made a
- 19:14Speaker 3: very memorable calendar, a wonderful.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Gift where each month is a year, so it's each month.
- 19:25Speaker 1: January is all behind the scenes photos, good times and
- 19:29Speaker 1: laughings is all. January' is all behind the scenes followsome season.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Want to meet it her? Sweet Guess what February is?
- 19:35Speaker 2: Dirt Valentine's Day?
- 19:37Speaker 1: No second season, it's all it's all behind the scenes
- 19:43Speaker 1: photos from the second season. So you'll see so many
- 19:47Speaker 1: of your favorite like memorable characters from over the years.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Dirt's in the calendar, Clay's in the calendar, Cess in
- 19:54Speaker 1: the calendar, Joe Rogan's in the calendar, Kevin Murphy's in
- 19:58Speaker 1: the calendar.
- 19:58Speaker 3: I saw the calendar and there was a lot of
- 20:01Speaker 3: scowling Steve photos. Yeah, there's a lot.
- 20:07Speaker 2: There's like a lot of like this, a lot of Steve.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Camera lot this Parkins back. Yeah, like Parkins back to.
- 20:15Speaker 1: You know, we didn't put it there as any of
- 20:17Speaker 1: my hospitalization photos that came out of the show in the.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Hospital that could be its own calendar.
- 20:22Speaker 1: I should have thought of that to put some of
- 20:23Speaker 1: that in there. So it goes back to when Yanni.
- 20:28Speaker 1: So the calendar goes back so far in time that
- 20:33Speaker 1: you'll see when Yanni was working for us but didn't
- 20:37Speaker 1: realize he was getting paid. That's big. We hired Yanni
- 20:42Speaker 1: to carry a backpack on a sheep hunt. He thought
- 20:44Speaker 1: he was just going to hang out, and then someone
- 20:45Speaker 1: gave him his tax paperwork at the end of it
- 20:48Speaker 1: and he's like, what's this say so you can get paid? Oh,
- 20:53Speaker 1: I saw we were dicking around. Then went on to
- 20:58Speaker 1: produce dozens of episodes, probably more than anybody.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so cool, man.
- 21:05Speaker 1: So the calendar covers a great span of time. That's
- 21:08Speaker 1: a really fun calendar. So check that one out, Dirty dozen.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Calendar.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Sweet.
- 21:17Speaker 3: A lot of set photos in there, probably, Yeah, a
- 21:20Speaker 3: lot of set photos.
- 21:21Speaker 2: From season eight yeah eight ford m hm my photos
- 21:26Speaker 2: lot was.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Taking pictures when you're wiping your mom's nose.
- 21:30Speaker 2: That's right close close, So check that out. Uh. A
- 21:39Speaker 2: lot of dirts photos in there, Oh.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Dirts cut photos in there. So here here's the other
- 21:44Speaker 1: thing about this whole deal. So if you're listening to
- 21:46Speaker 1: this right now, this all ties together. If you're listening
- 21:51Speaker 1: right now, our latest season of Meat Eater, season twelve
- 21:56Speaker 1: is out. It launched on October twelfth on the meat
- 21:59Speaker 1: eating website so themeter dot com and on the media
- 22:03Speaker 1: to YouTube channel.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Wait a minute, Season twelve is where on our own website,
- 22:11Speaker 3: what date? October twelve? Okay, got it?
- 22:15Speaker 2: Oh, it's would be good.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Yeah, man, it's gonna be good.
- 22:17Speaker 1: So if you're listening right now, it's out right now,
- 22:21Speaker 1: October twelve, meter website, on the media to YouTube channel,
- 22:25Speaker 1: And it is like I said, some days long time.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Ago, we would make sixteen. How many we got this year,
- 22:31Speaker 3: we did six six wait October twelve, Yeah, October. If
- 22:38Speaker 3: you're listening and it's past October.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Twelve, then you can go watch it right now.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Right now. We're rolling out a episode a week. Okay,
- 22:52Speaker 3: so for six weeks starting October teven. Yeah.
- 23:04Speaker 1: So I drew this crazy elk tag of Montana called
- 23:08Speaker 1: the Buffer Zone.
- 23:10Speaker 2: I missed that one that center.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Yeah, you went in November, November and you're hunting, like
- 23:22Speaker 3: right on the edge of the park.
- 23:23Speaker 1: They give up five tags a year and you get
- 23:27Speaker 1: this little ship and chunk of ground not very big.
- 23:29Speaker 1: You got a hunt on and it's right on the
- 23:31Speaker 1: edge of the park and you're catching elk migrating.
- 23:36Speaker 3: Out of the park.
- 23:37Speaker 1: M You know, everybody thinks of migrations is going south
- 23:40Speaker 1: in the winter, but they're actually my in this place.
- 23:42Speaker 1: They're migrating like northward, just elevation change, right. So we
- 23:48Speaker 1: got that coming out. We got another phenomenal where we
- 23:52Speaker 1: took our buddy Kevin Murphy to Michigan Cottontail Rabbit Bonanza
- 24:00Speaker 1: with rabid eagles, Squirrel Bonanza with squirrel dogs, a raccoon
- 24:08Speaker 1: that the dog's tree, a squirrel try to try to
- 24:12Speaker 1: picture this get by a dog under this tree.
- 24:16Speaker 2: I did that dog dog squirrel at that exact moment. Yeah,
- 24:22Speaker 2: he was firing up.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Man and I had poison ivy and I took a
- 24:25Speaker 1: bunch of Ben and drill.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Wasn't really thinking.
- 24:27Speaker 1: About it, and I thought I was aging, Like, uh, you're.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Blaming it on a I thought I would like I
- 24:34Speaker 3: was in a time of capsule poisoning.
- 24:39Speaker 1: A squirrel got hung up in the tree and I
- 24:40Speaker 1: tried to climb up the tree. I couldn't got to
- 24:42Speaker 1: the tree, and I thought I was like, I thought
- 24:43Speaker 1: I was dying of old age. And then it occurred
- 24:46Speaker 1: to me that he Ben and drill mid day, and
- 24:48Speaker 1: it even affected my vision.
- 24:51Speaker 3: I was so hopped up on ben and drill. You
- 24:54Speaker 3: should have taken away my firearm.
- 24:56Speaker 2: You're still plinking them squirrels though.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Yeah, because well that's was your heart rate down. It
- 25:01Speaker 1: makes you a good shot. But when it comes to
- 25:02Speaker 1: squirrels retrieving, So we had a squirrel. You'll see this
- 25:07Speaker 1: happen in this episode. The odds of this are so
- 25:12Speaker 1: infinitesticly small. Where the dog trees a squirrel, the squirrel
- 25:19Speaker 1: runs up a tree and stops comes to rest. Was
- 25:25Speaker 1: it eighteen twenty inches.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the coon happened to be in the tree
- 25:34Speaker 3: this daytime. Yeah, the squirrel passed the coon up and
- 25:36Speaker 3: plasters himself against the tree. So there's a scroll in
- 25:39Speaker 3: a raccoon twenty inches apart.
- 25:42Speaker 2: He got double tap on that one, which.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Drew our attention to both the raccoon and the squirrel.
- 25:47Speaker 4: I think that raccoon was on the ground when we
- 25:50Speaker 4: set the dogs loose, and he really caught him by
- 25:52Speaker 4: accident in an area, because.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Why would the squirrel be up that tree too?
- 25:55Speaker 4: Well, No, no, I think the raccoon when we got
- 25:59Speaker 4: out and set the dogs and they started barking whatever
- 26:02Speaker 4: that if you if you recollect the tree that that
- 26:05Speaker 4: raccoon was in, no raccoon would ever be in.
- 26:09Speaker 2: I think.
- 26:09Speaker 3: But why would a raccoon and a squirrel go up?
- 26:12Speaker 4: No, I think the raccoon heard us from a distance
- 26:15Speaker 4: and was like, I'm gonna get up a tree. This
- 26:16Speaker 4: is the only option I have at the moment.
- 26:18Speaker 3: There's a lot of trees in there.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Yeah, but that was there was not a lot of
- 26:21Speaker 4: big trees there, and it just it just so happens
- 26:25Speaker 4: that the squirrel ran up the same tree.
- 26:28Speaker 2: It was.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Let me tell you, I'm a long time doing it,
- 26:32Speaker 3: since your mama was still wipping your nose. This is
- 26:35Speaker 3: the unanswerable riddle. Your mom wiped Dirt's nose, got way back,
- 26:42Speaker 3: unanswerable riddle. Anyway, you're stepping into the declare that no
- 26:48Speaker 3: one's gonna know. It was the sequence what anybody was thinking.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Just you have to do exit interviews. Yeah.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Yeah, if you looked.
- 26:59Speaker 4: At the tree that the raccoon was in, you'd be like,
- 27:01Speaker 4: no way, a raccoon is gonna climb in that tree
- 27:04Speaker 4: just to sleep for the day.
- 27:05Speaker 3: No, it actually sounded like the start of a good joke.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Raccoon and a squirrel in the same tree. Four guys
- 27:12Speaker 3: walk up to the tree. One guy says, look at
- 27:15Speaker 3: the coon. The other guy says, look at the squirrel.
- 27:18Speaker 3: The other guy says, that dog. Just who gets to
- 27:23Speaker 3: shoot the squirrel? Yeah, the dog got so excited a
- 27:26Speaker 3: bit Dirt. Yeah, it was what to do with himself?
- 27:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he was wound up. Man. So Kevin Murphy didn't
- 27:32Speaker 2: even know him. He's the small game guru guru Clay.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Yeah, but Kevin mur SAIDs he's had it happen before,
- 27:39Speaker 1: which I'm like a slightly incredulous sob no disrespect. Uh,
- 27:43Speaker 1: so that one revisit something you're saying what I like
- 27:46Speaker 1: what you're saying.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Okay, it was a little.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Wasn't a hemlock?
- 27:52Speaker 2: Was it a hemlock? I don't remember exactly. It was
- 27:56Speaker 2: a clump of trees.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Yeah, why did yeah like if it was that that
- 28:03Speaker 1: because that was not where a.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Coon had just lay up for the day.
- 28:06Speaker 2: No, because he'd lay.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Up where he could just get on a big old
- 28:08Speaker 1: limb way up high.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Yeah, Hey, guys, could it be could it be that
- 28:12Speaker 3: there was a concentrated food source there that the coon
- 28:15Speaker 3: and the squirrel were hammering together. No, and then because
- 28:18Speaker 3: that squirrel went a long ways to get there. Really
- 28:21Speaker 3: so just maybe totally coincidential.
- 28:23Speaker 1: I think that it was one of the few conifers,
- 28:27Speaker 1: and they knew that that confert offered some protection. But
- 28:32Speaker 1: it's hard to picture that these two unrelated creatures, of
- 28:35Speaker 1: all the trees and all the woods, that these two creatures,
- 28:39Speaker 1: unless they were hanging out, would have not only gone
- 28:45Speaker 1: up the same tree, but would have gone up the
- 28:49Speaker 1: same tree the saint to the same height and sat there.
- 28:56Speaker 3: One of the great mysteries.
- 28:58Speaker 2: But you got him and lined up there and retrieved
- 29:01Speaker 2: them or the coon.
- 29:02Speaker 3: One of them fell out and one of them didn't
- 29:04Speaker 3: fall out.
- 29:04Speaker 2: I think the squirrel fell out. Go watch the episode
- 29:07Speaker 2: and see what.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's right into the Meteor podcast at the
- 29:11Speaker 3: meter dot com. Yeah, we'll take any explanations. We'll just
- 29:14Speaker 3: take them as fact. Idaho mule deer, we don't kill
- 29:18Speaker 3: the giant.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Well.
- 29:20Speaker 3: I was on fire with tag draws. I did draw
- 29:23Speaker 3: anything this.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Year, and cool tags used them last year.
- 29:26Speaker 3: But I was on fire with tag draws last year.
- 29:28Speaker 3: I drew I drew a your.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Take down in Idaho and got just a stomper if
- 29:36Speaker 1: you want to see.
- 29:38Speaker 3: It was just one of those deals.
- 29:39Speaker 1: It's almost like misleading and this happens on them, like
- 29:41Speaker 1: we have a lot of episodes or nothing happens, you
- 29:43Speaker 1: get skunked.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Whatever, not many that would it happens.
- 29:46Speaker 1: It happens, And they had a lot of episodes where
- 29:48Speaker 1: it's kind of normal hunting or you got to grind
- 29:50Speaker 1: it out.
- 29:51Speaker 3: Just one of those, just one of those like.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Just I don't know, there's just good stars aligned.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Yeah, just like everything like just box you could go
- 30:02Speaker 1: do that and I've seen this happen because we've had
- 30:05Speaker 1: some great hunts. Then your buddies go back and they
- 30:07Speaker 1: do it again and again and again and it's never
- 30:09Speaker 1: like that again. Or I've got spots we hit every
- 30:11Speaker 1: year and you're always chasing. Ten years ago, it was
- 30:14Speaker 1: just something with just a ton of bucks man and
- 30:17Speaker 1: then really good intel, really good intel.
- 30:22Speaker 3: On both those well, no, on one.
- 30:25Speaker 1: It was like I had some friends that had hit
- 30:28Speaker 1: this area hard for archery and I had great They
- 30:32Speaker 1: were like, we saw a lot of action here, like,
- 30:35Speaker 1: don't bother looking there.
- 30:37Speaker 3: So you kind of reduce this huge.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Area down into a little area because they're like, yeah,
- 30:41Speaker 1: I don't waste your time. Don't waste your time now
- 30:43Speaker 1: up there, I would definitely spend some time. And if
- 30:46Speaker 1: not there, I'll go spend some time over there. But right,
- 30:49Speaker 1: so you go into it like really armed and man,
- 30:52Speaker 1: we had a good time and I had more fun
- 30:55Speaker 1: than anybody.
- 30:58Speaker 3: Yeah, like eighty plus bigger that was it, tutor there,
- 31:06Speaker 3: smaller that one eight, smaller, ninety six four waller three
- 31:11Speaker 3: smaller yeah really one three two, I don't know.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Changes.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I dried it in the bucket of water, so
- 31:21Speaker 1: it should still be the same. Yeah, but stick in there,
- 31:25Speaker 1: aged in the bucket of water.
- 31:27Speaker 3: So I don't think anything changed. That's in there. Your
- 31:32Speaker 3: biggest mulder?
- 31:35Speaker 2: Uh no, No, for real? Was the Idaho?
- 31:38Speaker 4: I like, I'm like, he's in the club.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Did you kill a Yeah?
- 31:42Speaker 2: Was that Idaho?
- 31:44Speaker 3: Years ago?
- 31:46Speaker 2: He's in that book? The was it big Bucks of
- 31:48Speaker 2: Idaho or something?
- 31:49Speaker 3: Great box of great mual to your box of Idaho?
- 31:52Speaker 2: Really that buck will probably be in the calendar, I imagine.
- 31:55Speaker 3: No, it's not. Really, there's not a lot of big
- 31:57Speaker 3: old there's not a lot of grip and grins.
- 32:00Speaker 4: The the Idaho buck is on the cover of this
- 32:04Speaker 4: Slash season season twelve. Now oh that new Yeah, yeah,
- 32:10Speaker 4: the old, the over two hundred one is not in there.
- 32:13Speaker 1: You know what's the funny thing about? Like I've hunt
- 32:18Speaker 1: a mulder and you know I've hunt a mildier in
- 32:21Speaker 1: Montana for over twenty years. Yeah, over twenty years.
- 32:28Speaker 3: Well, Ce's mama was still cess.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Mom will still wipe my nose. And when I started hunting, okay,
- 32:38Speaker 1: and have covered a lot of ground and just hunted
- 32:42Speaker 1: a lot of like a ton of public land milder. Yeah,
- 32:53Speaker 1: in Montana twenty years worth. But when you go look
- 32:56Speaker 1: at my like my wall where I have my like
- 33:00Speaker 1: big stuff collection, listen to this, not one of those
- 33:05Speaker 1: boxes from Montana. Really it's like you look like I
- 33:09Speaker 1: just looked, look look look like a decade whatever.
- 33:12Speaker 3: And you go to some of these other states to
- 33:15Speaker 3: the south, you know, Gangbusters, other directions, and you're like, oh,
- 33:19Speaker 3: there's like more big Bucks than I ever saw. Here's
- 33:23Speaker 3: the hunting.
- 33:24Speaker 1: It's just the toll, the toll of having like of
- 33:29Speaker 1: having these long six week rifle seasons that run through
- 33:37Speaker 1: the rut that it's just you just aren't making you know,
- 33:46Speaker 1: they're not the state is not prioritizing. I'm not critical.
- 33:49Speaker 1: I'm not criticizing for this. They're not prioritizing.
- 33:52Speaker 3: They're prioritizing opportunity, opportunity over quality. But it's just amazing
- 33:57Speaker 3: that you can go you know, you saw Colorado, Idaho,
- 34:02Speaker 3: New Mexico and it's like, oh, there's the MULEI I've
- 34:05Speaker 3: always wondered where they all are.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Yeah, they're here.
- 34:08Speaker 3: Yeah, Like what happens when you don't just gun for
- 34:12Speaker 3: him so hard?
- 34:15Speaker 2: But with that being said, there are some running around
- 34:18Speaker 2: in yeah.
- 34:19Speaker 1: For sure, but which I mean it's not like you
- 34:21Speaker 1: can take an empirical approach to it and just go
- 34:23Speaker 1: look at Boon and Crockett entries.
- 34:24Speaker 2: M you know, yeah, for sure.
- 34:27Speaker 3: I mean they're they're there. They are there.
- 34:29Speaker 1: But like on public ground, I haven't killed a I've
- 34:34Speaker 1: never killed I don't think I've ever killed a muley
- 34:36Speaker 1: buck on private ground. I've never killed a bull elk
- 34:38Speaker 1: on private ground.
- 34:42Speaker 4: I have a buddy that killed a two hundred inch
- 34:44Speaker 4: mule deer buck in Montana on block management.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Yep.
- 34:47Speaker 3: I would count that as public But it's just.
- 34:49Speaker 4: One of those things where right time it was the rut. Yep,
- 34:53Speaker 4: he probably moved off a piece of he made, he
- 34:55Speaker 4: made a mistake.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Yep. Yeah, suicide, so it can happen.
- 34:59Speaker 1: So, speaking of the lie shows, remember early I was
- 35:01Speaker 1: plugging our live shows coming up. Uh years ago, me
- 35:06Speaker 1: and Yanni were at a live show.
- 35:10Speaker 2: I keep seeing action out that window.
- 35:12Speaker 3: I'm looking for horns.
- 35:14Speaker 1: We were at a live show years ago, and it
- 35:17Speaker 1: was funny because we were at a live show, I
- 35:18Speaker 1: believe in Idaho.
- 35:20Speaker 3: We did a live show and or somewhere kn't me aware,
- 35:25Speaker 3: and a dude named Richard Martinez came up and he
- 35:29Speaker 3: said to me and Yani, you should come hunt turkeys
- 35:31Speaker 3: in the Everglades mm hmm with me, and he.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Gave me a book. He brought me a gift and
- 35:36Speaker 1: gave me a book about the Everglades. And I started.
- 35:40Speaker 1: At that time, me and Yanni started applying for state
- 35:44Speaker 1: gaming areas and it took years for us to draw
- 35:48Speaker 1: the state game area tag. I feel we were pretty
- 35:52Speaker 1: consistent about our application.
- 35:54Speaker 3: Oh I bet you guys were so ben should we
- 35:56Speaker 3: drew because we wanted to both have it.
- 35:57Speaker 1: So we were like party app right, and we party
- 36:00Speaker 1: apped and eventually drew our Everglades turkey tags and got
- 36:07Speaker 1: to hook up with this dude, Richard Martinez, passionate about
- 36:12Speaker 1: who's a very good turkey hunter, really serious outdoorsman and
- 36:18Speaker 1: what's funny about this hanging out with this guy? We
- 36:20Speaker 1: got a whole episode. This is one of the just
- 36:21Speaker 1: to return back. This is one of the season twelve
- 36:23Speaker 1: episodes where we go, I see all the turkeys with
- 36:28Speaker 1: our buddy down there in Florida. How cool it was,
- 36:32Speaker 1: But it just so happened through some other work stuff.
- 36:34Speaker 1: I spent a bunch of time in Florida and this
- 36:37Speaker 1: is not the knock, but like there's a lot of people,
- 36:39Speaker 1: like it's pretty common. This is gonna really piss a
- 36:43Speaker 1: bunch of people off, and people that aren't pissed are
- 36:47Speaker 1: gonna wonder why this would.
- 36:48Speaker 3: Piss people off. But there will be some pissed people.
- 36:51Speaker 1: There are states where you where you hear a lot
- 36:55Speaker 1: of unhappiness from hunters and anglers. You know, there's just
- 37:02Speaker 1: like states that generate a lot of resentment.
- 37:05Speaker 2: On how it's managed or yeah.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Management success rates whatever. There are just there there are
- 37:12Speaker 1: states where there are states where you just get.
- 37:17Speaker 3: We're a lot of unhappy both hold the smokes is
- 37:21Speaker 3: Florida on them. I couldn't believe.
- 37:23Speaker 2: It, Yeah, which is kind of surprising.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Yeah, like some states you go there and you know,
- 37:28Speaker 1: like here, here's the thing to that. And this is
- 37:30Speaker 1: the point I make oftentimes everywhere you go into a
- 37:33Speaker 1: country and I've been and I've been able to you know,
- 37:36Speaker 1: I've been. I've had the great fortune over my career
- 37:38Speaker 1: as a writer and doing TV and other other enterprises
- 37:42Speaker 1: I've been involved in. I've been able to just to
- 37:45Speaker 1: go everywhere, right I've been, I've been able to. I
- 37:49Speaker 1: haven't hunted. I mean, I've been to all the states.
- 37:51Speaker 1: I've hunted and fished in most of them, and I
- 37:54Speaker 1: just get to meet and talk to a lot of people.
- 37:57Speaker 1: And the thing that I've always marveled at and puzzled
- 37:59Speaker 1: over was that everywhere you go, you'll you'll hear two stories,
- 38:08Speaker 1: versions of two narratives. And these narratives could come from
- 38:11Speaker 1: people who are next door neighbors.
- 38:14Speaker 2: There's there's this, there's.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Narrative, A narrative A is uh, all the good spots
- 38:23Speaker 1: are gone. Everything got you know, outsiders came in, the
- 38:31Speaker 1: outer staters ruined it. The wolves ruined it, the coyotes
- 38:36Speaker 1: ruined it, fish and game ruined it.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Hopeless.
- 38:43Speaker 3: It's like, I don't even go anymore. I lost my spot.
- 38:49Speaker 3: Uh you name it? Okay? And then next door.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Everywhere you go, next door not always next door, but
- 39:01Speaker 1: I mean like in the same universe.
- 39:04Speaker 3: The same is is you can't even scratch the surface.
- 39:10Speaker 3: Ye I can't wait to get out of bed in
- 39:12Speaker 3: the morning.
- 39:14Speaker 2: That was rich.
- 39:14Speaker 3: You can't do it all.
- 39:16Speaker 1: The question is which one are you seth So he's
- 39:20Speaker 1: a can't scratch the surface. Yeah, So this is ours
- 39:24Speaker 1: just been like a thing of mine. And it's funny
- 39:25Speaker 1: because here's this dude that we hang out with, who
- 39:29Speaker 1: like is just a can't scratch the surface guy.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Man.
- 39:34Speaker 3: But dude, he scouts hard. Yeah, he like if he's
- 39:41Speaker 3: not hunting, he's looking.
- 39:44Speaker 2: For hunting spot. Might like scouting more than he.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Works his ass off.
- 39:48Speaker 1: But he just like in a place that's in a place,
- 39:50Speaker 1: and he hunts a lot of areas in a place
- 39:53Speaker 1: where it's like just it just generates a lot of
- 39:56Speaker 1: you know, they got it. They got so many cougars
- 39:58Speaker 1: now and deer population as you're down. But here's a
- 40:01Speaker 1: guy just consistently consistently deer on public land, turkeys on
- 40:06Speaker 1: public land, working his butt off, can't scratch the surface,
- 40:10Speaker 1: can't get to.
- 40:10Speaker 3: It all kind of guy. Yep, I liked hanging out
- 40:14Speaker 3: at a.
- 40:14Speaker 2: Little hard worker behind the scenes of that Florida trip.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Off topic, ping pong, I smoked you.
- 40:22Speaker 3: Oh we had a ping pong table, that's right, everybody
- 40:27Speaker 3: eating everyone. That was kind of a weird deal, man, like,
- 40:34Speaker 3: and you were shook up about it.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Well, here's why I was coming in hot, because it
- 40:38Speaker 1: was like we had just got our kids. This little
- 40:42Speaker 1: net you stretch out across your kitchen table. Yeah, so
- 40:45Speaker 1: for nights, dude.
- 40:46Speaker 3: Every night we ate dinner, we cleared the table, we
- 40:49Speaker 3: stretched that net out and just played ping.
- 40:50Speaker 4: He came in there and thinking he was Joe ping pong,
- 40:53Speaker 4: so I washooked.
- 40:55Speaker 3: I was pretty hot.
- 40:55Speaker 1: And I also felt because I was playing on a
- 40:57Speaker 1: slightly smaller kitchen table table row and I've been in
- 41:02Speaker 1: the table is one of those ones that looks like
- 41:03Speaker 1: it was cut from one huge tree, so it's got
- 41:05Speaker 1: curvy edges. So if I was kicking my kids butts
- 41:09Speaker 1: on that thing, I thought I was gonna come in
- 41:11Speaker 1: and whoop you guys then at ping pong, because I'm
- 41:15Speaker 1: like beating my eight year old, beating my ten year old,
- 41:19Speaker 1: sometimes beating my thirteen year old. So I came in
- 41:22Speaker 1: there like just ready to mop you guys up, man,
- 41:26Speaker 1: and just everybody beat my ass, dude. And I was
- 41:28Speaker 1: coming in fresh off the home table. But a thing
- 41:33Speaker 1: I hadn't figured, man, is like this is an outdoor
- 41:36Speaker 1: ping pong table.
- 41:37Speaker 3: Wash. Those are susceptible the wind drift yep and the
- 41:41Speaker 3: sun direction there was everybody was subject to the same
- 41:44Speaker 3: wind drift yep. But man, just everybody, yann dude, you
- 41:49Speaker 3: just beat my butt. Yeah, Oh, yeah, he's good. He
- 41:53Speaker 3: got like you just seem he looks like a dude
- 41:56Speaker 3: to be good at ping pong.
- 42:00Speaker 2: There.
- 42:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I got my ass kicked at ping pong bad
- 42:03Speaker 3: every night.
- 42:04Speaker 1: So when you're watching that episode and you've seen me
- 42:07Speaker 1: having a good time turkey hunting, I want you to
- 42:09Speaker 1: picture me just getting my ass kicked at ping pong
- 42:12Speaker 1: that night.
- 42:12Speaker 2: And taking it out and Osio this baby. You were
- 42:16Speaker 2: the first tag out. That was a good trip, man,
- 42:19Speaker 2: what a cool space.
- 42:20Speaker 3: I was second to tag out Dirt. I was gonna
- 42:22Speaker 3: ask you, when did you start filming for.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Me eater twenty fifteen?
- 42:27Speaker 3: So what season was that? Like? Season four or five?
- 42:30Speaker 3: I thought you you were in early dye.
- 42:32Speaker 2: That was early yeah, briy four season four?
- 42:36Speaker 3: Maybe so you filmed four through twelve.
- 42:39Speaker 2: I'd have to look, but yeah, fourth or fifth season.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Sometimes he'll get off on other stupid projects.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Might racle this, it's not won't can't.
- 42:49Speaker 3: Yeah, get he's an international player. Many continents have you
- 42:54Speaker 3: filmed on dirt? Count North America, North America, South America?
- 42:58Speaker 2: It's like twenty two, twenty three countries continents? Yeah, countries
- 43:02Speaker 2: is yeah, a little over twenty you.
- 43:04Speaker 3: Filmed in twenty countries. Yeah, that's incredible.
- 43:08Speaker 2: My favorite is America. Yeah hell yeah.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, brother, I've said this cold sey Tis. But
- 43:18Speaker 1: we're in Alaska right now. It reminds me of it.
- 43:20Speaker 1: One time a TV executive said, I don't want to
- 43:25Speaker 1: say where, but a TV executive said to me, the
- 43:29Speaker 1: only other country our viewers are interested in is Alaska.
- 43:34Speaker 2: That's a fair kind of look.
- 43:37Speaker 3: You're so there's that episode that it was a really
- 43:40Speaker 3: Oh you were on this one too, dirt.
- 43:43Speaker 2: I think I only missed those two bad.
- 43:45Speaker 3: Yeah, Spearfish and Bahamas. Oh yeah, what like you can
- 43:50Speaker 3: swim too?
- 43:51Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 43:51Speaker 3: Oh yeah there it's like a little otter shark bait's.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Perfect camera man slicking the water. Oh yeah, dirts. If
- 43:59Speaker 1: you got bad country camera man.
- 44:01Speaker 3: Well, backcountry hiking hauling. He was hauling moose meat.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Ah, you guys, come on.
- 44:08Speaker 3: He was hauling, no doubt, one hundred and twenty pound pounds,
- 44:11Speaker 3: ridiculously stomping me carrying probably a eighty five pounds.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Yeah you've been butchering you guys.
- 44:17Speaker 3: Be a sturdy little feller.
- 44:18Speaker 2: He is.
- 44:20Speaker 3: Sturdy little feller.
- 44:21Speaker 2: Bahamas was a sweet that blew my mind.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Uh when guy was caught in that episode, he was
- 44:27Speaker 1: trying to keep count. I think he came in that
- 44:31Speaker 1: we had sixteen and a half species.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Wow, Hue. That was because one of those.
- 44:37Speaker 3: Fish came in just half of it.
- 44:40Speaker 4: Sharks.
- 44:42Speaker 2: The sharks were gnarly on that one.
- 44:43Speaker 3: Yeah, but uh man, some lot like nice groupers speared.
- 44:49Speaker 3: A lot of nice groupers had just look at the window, Steve, Oh, oh,
- 44:55Speaker 3: nice moves. We're looking at the window at a guy
- 44:57Speaker 3: putting a big moosehreck in the back of a truck.
- 45:00Speaker 3: Good for Wow, seem bigger.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Sixteen and a half? Yeah, is that counting the deep
- 45:09Speaker 2: drop stuff? Oh?
- 45:10Speaker 3: Yeah, so we had Yeah.
- 45:16Speaker 1: So we were with Kimmy Kimmy Werner and then Cameron
- 45:19Speaker 1: kirk Connell. Cameron kirk Connell. We for those of you
- 45:26Speaker 1: who've listened to our show, our Campfire Stories series. So
- 45:32Speaker 1: one of one of the things we make, because we
- 45:33Speaker 1: make this thing called Campfire Stories. So we did me
- 45:35Speaker 1: eater Campfire Stories. It's an audiobook. It's an audio original.
- 45:38Speaker 1: It's not an audiobook. It's an audio original. It's like
- 45:40Speaker 1: very edited storytelling from disparate voices. And if you haven't
- 45:45Speaker 1: heard it, you should definitely check it out. And we
- 45:49Speaker 1: had volume one Close Calls, and then Volume two was
- 45:53Speaker 1: narrow Misses and more close Calls. We have volume three
- 45:56Speaker 1: coming up, which is Discoveries, so people find in crazy stuff, bodies, money, whatever.
- 46:04Speaker 1: It's like crazy Discoveries. Beans, bodies means yeah, I'm gonna
- 46:08Speaker 1: do a whole episode on me finding more pole beans
- 46:10Speaker 1: after my kids have picked them all, after they've picked
- 46:13Speaker 1: them all, I would go and pick fifty more.
- 46:18Speaker 2: And uh.
- 46:20Speaker 1: But in Close Calls, Cameron kirk Connell, we even ran it.
- 46:24Speaker 1: People will says, you know this because when we were
- 46:25Speaker 1: promoting meters campfire stories, close Calls, we promoted it with
- 46:30Speaker 1: our Cameron kirk connell story. So Cameron kirk connell grew
- 46:35Speaker 1: up in Florida but spends a ton of time in
- 46:36Speaker 1: the Bahamas, and he tells a story about when he
- 46:38Speaker 1: was a tarpain guide. It's if you listen back in
- 46:41Speaker 1: episode you'll find it. He was a tarpain guy but
- 46:44Speaker 1: went spearfishing one day and they were chasing after a
- 46:48Speaker 1: Couberra snapper and Cameron kirk Connell's dive partner had a blackout.
- 46:53Speaker 1: So Cameron kirk connell is down deep his dive partner
- 46:56Speaker 1: was supposed to be on the surface or taking turns
- 46:58Speaker 1: watching each other, but the I almost seen something from
- 47:01Speaker 1: the surface and went after it. So Cameron kirk Connell's
- 47:05Speaker 1: down deep and here comes the guy sinking in a
- 47:09Speaker 1: sort of like upright Chriss cross apple sauce formally.
- 47:13Speaker 3: Known as Indian style legs.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Yeah, they don't call it that anymore. When you go
- 47:21Speaker 1: to school. My kids they don't even know what that is.
- 47:22Speaker 1: They think it's criss cross apple sauce. Oh, how you
- 47:26Speaker 1: say so Chris Cross apple sauce. And he's sinking, passed out,
- 47:32Speaker 1: and Camra kirk Connell's gonna shoot him because he's on
- 47:37Speaker 1: air and he's on his way up, and so he's like,
- 47:38Speaker 1: he's at least gonna try to shoot him with the
- 47:40Speaker 1: spear shaft.
- 47:41Speaker 3: So he can drag him back to the surface and
- 47:44Speaker 3: shoot him in the calf.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Yeah, but the body's spinning, so he's already down on
- 47:50Speaker 1: his way up, and he has to go crossways to
- 47:53Speaker 1: get to him, and there's no way he's gonna drag
- 47:54Speaker 1: him up.
- 47:55Speaker 3: They're both gonna die.
- 47:56Speaker 1: He spins, and then his only shot is to shoot
- 47:58Speaker 1: him in the in the five, but he's afraid if
- 48:02Speaker 1: he shoots him in the thigh is going to bleed
- 48:03Speaker 1: to death. So he lowers down and shoots him in
- 48:07Speaker 1: the fin with his spear gun. Long shot too. There's
- 48:10Speaker 1: guy's on the boat. So he gets up to the surface.
- 48:17Speaker 3: He's like Polo.
- 48:20Speaker 1: And they drag this dude up and resuscitate him. He tells,
- 48:25Speaker 1: is just an insane story, he tells.
- 48:29Speaker 3: So that's how he and I became friends. He's he's
- 48:32Speaker 3: a guide, he's got it all over the world fishing,
- 48:35Speaker 3: and he's he's like, he's he's a boat captain. He's whatever,
- 48:40Speaker 3: like boat class, you know, like they do like Merchant Marine, right, Well, yeah,
- 48:43Speaker 3: but they do. You know, you're a captain for whatever tonnages.
- 48:47Speaker 3: He's a captain any class, super dial. So he could
- 48:51Speaker 3: drive my ARC sixteen sixty. That's what I'm trying to say, Wow,
- 48:56Speaker 3: what about the bigger could maybe my canoe, my CEA
- 49:02Speaker 3: ARC sixteen sixty.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Let him go, baby, he's got.
- 49:06Speaker 3: Or you know, the Princess Ocean Liners, Titanic, No.
- 49:11Speaker 2: Man watching you guys dive that stuff was so you
- 49:14Speaker 2: want to talk.
- 49:14Speaker 1: About a good diver. And then Kimmy Warner is a
- 49:16Speaker 1: phenomenal die. It's like a show where you watch me
- 49:19Speaker 1: get my ass kicked.
- 49:20Speaker 2: By Oh you were crushing.
- 49:21Speaker 1: Yeah, well I was doing good. I was new as
- 49:23Speaker 1: good as those guys. Those guys are good, man, those
- 49:26Speaker 1: guys are good in the water.
- 49:27Speaker 2: That recovery has only been recent. Right after that the
- 49:31Speaker 2: hurricanes and eighteen or something in Bahamas yep'.
- 49:36Speaker 3: Then then there's more, lastly.
- 49:42Speaker 1: Alaska with Doctor Randall and Clay nukembe Oh Black Bears
- 49:48Speaker 1: epic and that is the epic wet suit.
- 49:50Speaker 3: Black Bear hunt. I'm looking forward to seeing it. I
- 49:53Speaker 3: didn't seen it. I didn't show it to you.
- 49:55Speaker 1: I don't know why I didn't show it to you.
- 49:56Speaker 1: Usually i'll show it to people.
- 49:58Speaker 3: You've never showed me a single episode of on before
- 50:00Speaker 3: it came out. Maybe I'll say sometimes I show it
- 50:03Speaker 3: to people. I show it to anyone to ask. I'm
- 50:08Speaker 3: trying not to be a pain. Johanni.
- 50:10Speaker 1: He always wants to see. He always got comments.
- 50:13Speaker 3: I didn't know that was an option.
- 50:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Yan, get right in there, mm hm. Because
- 50:18Speaker 1: he'd be like, hey, but what about remember that time
- 50:20Speaker 1: we did X. I'll be like, I forgot about that.
- 50:22Speaker 3: Man, I dig around and find stuff that we had
- 50:25Speaker 3: forgotten about. I've got middle notes like an elephant. Really.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Oh well, that's good to keep mind because Yanni would
- 50:33Speaker 1: quite off be like, dude, why why didn't they use
- 50:35Speaker 1: the stuff about.
- 50:35Speaker 3: The whatever or whatever. I'm just making that and then
- 50:40Speaker 3: we'll dig in there and find it. Mhm. Is there
- 50:44Speaker 3: still time on the he's done.
- 50:48Speaker 1: So when we're working on an episode, what we do
- 50:50Speaker 1: is like we film, we come back, and first someone
- 50:55Speaker 1: goes to and scours it for everything usable we do
- 50:59Speaker 1: produce or know which lays it out. I'll often have
- 51:03Speaker 1: some stuff I'll talk about like well, like this is
- 51:06Speaker 1: the sort of the main thing we're after and this
- 51:08Speaker 1: is all what I'm interested in.
- 51:10Speaker 3: Then it'll go to us called a rough cut.
- 51:13Speaker 1: We'll get the rough cut and it'll have like scratch
- 51:15Speaker 1: VO and then I'll start writing v O yeah, and
- 51:19Speaker 1: we'll do like general like well this is kind of
- 51:22Speaker 1: boring and that should be moved around, it's not really
- 51:24Speaker 1: understand what about the owl right, that kind of stuff,
- 51:28Speaker 1: and then it'll go to fine and then usually have fine.
- 51:32Speaker 1: I would show it to Yanni if he's in it
- 51:34Speaker 1: or whoever. Then from Fine, it goes to picklock, and
- 51:39Speaker 1: then from picklock it goes to sound and sound.
- 51:42Speaker 2: And color color correction.
- 51:44Speaker 3: I think you and then you don't want to dig
- 51:46Speaker 3: back into it. Everybody gets riled up. Yeah, sure, just.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Get one point back about the Bahamas. All the beautiful
- 51:53Speaker 2: underwater filming was not me. That was just.
- 51:58Speaker 3: Kimmy Werner's husband us from Turkowski Paring parent James Paron, James,
- 52:06Speaker 3: those are just some little river riders.
- 52:08Speaker 2: To those when they'd get the guns they were smoking,
- 52:11Speaker 2: they could shoot too, dude. Legendary underwater.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Yeah, very good underwater cinematographers. Wherever you call him underwater
- 52:20Speaker 1: camera guys about to call.
- 52:21Speaker 2: Them that works.
- 52:24Speaker 3: Yeah, the very habit man Season twelve access.
- 52:27Speaker 2: Can be good.
- 52:29Speaker 3: Mm hmmm.
- 52:30Speaker 2: October twelfth job.
- 52:32Speaker 3: That's when it starts. There's there's pumping it up.
- 52:35Speaker 2: Man, this fancy cops from the scene. X.
- 52:49Speaker 3: So, Clay, give us a quick give us a quick
- 52:50Speaker 3: wrap up what we've been doing, Clay. So, we've been
- 52:52Speaker 3: in we're we are currently in Alaska. We've been on
- 52:56Speaker 3: our moose hunt, our annual an old moose hunt, and uh,
- 53:03Speaker 3: this year we were on a different ridge than last year.
- 53:06Speaker 3: And we I've never honted the same ridge top twice,
- 53:11Speaker 3: so we came to a new ridge. And this kind
- 53:17Speaker 3: of hunting, you fly in there's a small airstrip that
- 53:21Speaker 3: you're able to land super cubs. You camp close to
- 53:24Speaker 3: the airstrip and you you can only kill a moose
- 53:28Speaker 3: as close as you can get the moose tot them
- 53:31Speaker 3: back up to the airstrip. We planned this hunt for
- 53:36Speaker 3: nine days and planned the hunt so that it ended
- 53:40Speaker 3: in the latter part of the season, because the closer
- 53:43Speaker 3: you get deeper you get into September, the better the
- 53:47Speaker 3: moose right's going to be guaranteed really anywhere. And so
- 53:51Speaker 3: we started our hunt on September the tenth.
- 53:54Speaker 1: I believe the eleventh.
- 53:58Speaker 3: Yeah, And and what we say all last year, what
- 54:00Speaker 3: we hear from people, what Steve's experience, This is my
- 54:03Speaker 3: second moose hunt, so clearly I'm an expert now is
- 54:08Speaker 3: that just every day you see the rut pick up
- 54:10Speaker 3: more and more. And it's a calling game, so you
- 54:14Speaker 3: don't have a lot of mobility like in elk hunting.
- 54:17Speaker 3: You you you can, you're moving around, you're calling. You
- 54:20Speaker 3: might see elk two drainage is over and you figure
- 54:24Speaker 3: out how to get over there. This is not that
- 54:26Speaker 3: you you pretty much have a stationary place that you're
- 54:28Speaker 3: calling from and you're you're calling kind of long term calling.
- 54:34Speaker 3: The way I think about it is there's a lot
- 54:36Speaker 3: of calling that you get an immediate response, and you
- 54:39Speaker 3: know if you're calling with successful ye within seconds or
- 54:43Speaker 3: minute when you're calling some ducks, calling ducks for seconds, calling.
- 54:47Speaker 4: Elk, call a turkey and gobbles back.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So this is more like you're just
- 54:54Speaker 3: feeding seeding calls into the into the this very vast land.
- 55:00Speaker 1: And if I want to point out, if you don't
- 55:02Speaker 1: call them, you ain't gonna get them.
- 55:05Speaker 2: That's right.
- 55:05Speaker 1: I mean it could happen, but it's like it would
- 55:07Speaker 1: not be a reliable strategy. You're just gonna wait and
- 55:09Speaker 1: one's gonna.
- 55:10Speaker 3: Walk by it.
- 55:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:11Speaker 3: So we're hunting this like rolling rolling hills, big bigger mountains,
- 55:17Speaker 3: and so what you can see is probably only forty
- 55:22Speaker 3: percent of what is actually there. I mean, you know,
- 55:26Speaker 3: rolling off into these big drops the other right, or
- 55:30Speaker 3: your call is going down into this draw that you
- 55:33Speaker 3: can't see what's going on down there. And so we
- 55:38Speaker 3: got into this spot the first day. Is this about
- 55:40Speaker 3: the pace you want the story to go, great job. Okay,
- 55:44Speaker 3: So we get in here the first day and the
- 55:48Speaker 3: clouds parted. We had a little bit of cloud cover,
- 55:52Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure. The first day. Got in there late
- 55:54Speaker 3: in the morning, and within thirty minutes we saw a
- 55:56Speaker 3: bull within about two miles of where we're sitting. This
- 55:59Speaker 3: The landscape is willow flats, spruce drawls and patches and
- 56:05Speaker 3: just tundra, and so some of it you can't see
- 56:08Speaker 3: real well, but some of it you can. Where we
- 56:10Speaker 3: were sitting, we could see a big saddle between two ridges,
- 56:15Speaker 3: and we could but we could also see miles and
- 56:18Speaker 3: miles away on these like high alpine tundra e mountains
- 56:24Speaker 3: that if we saw a moose there, it really meant
- 56:26Speaker 3: nothing to us other than just it was fun to
- 56:28Speaker 3: see him. I mean, we were spotting moose five miles away.
- 56:31Speaker 3: So the first the first morning, within thirty minutes, we
- 56:34Speaker 3: saw a moose two miles away, which is semi in
- 56:37Speaker 3: play because potentially that moose could hear us and we
- 56:41Speaker 3: could call him and maybe two days later he'd show
- 56:45Speaker 3: up in our draw.
- 56:46Speaker 1: We called one. We called one from two miles one
- 56:52Speaker 1: day and he came in in about it over about
- 56:55Speaker 1: the course of about an hour it passed. Yeah, and
- 56:59Speaker 1: some could have even been we debate it was a
- 57:05Speaker 1: minimum of two miles minutes.
- 57:06Speaker 3: And they can hear and you can always tell when
- 57:09Speaker 3: they can hear you, because you you have a we
- 57:11Speaker 3: have a we've got a new call that we're prototyping
- 57:14Speaker 3: from Phelps and you moose call and you can see
- 57:18Speaker 3: the movie. They always they'll turn and look at you
- 57:20Speaker 3: and just stare if they hear you, you know, and
- 57:23Speaker 3: you two satellite dishes just be like, yeah, yeah, they'll sit,
- 57:27Speaker 3: they'll lock up, just and spend minutes without moving, staring.
- 57:32Speaker 1: Right in the right direction with them big old satellite
- 57:35Speaker 1: years out Yeah, with their horns.
- 57:37Speaker 3: So you can tell, like if one's way out there,
- 57:40Speaker 3: you call and you watch him and you're like, he
- 57:41Speaker 3: can hear us, and then you you measure your calling
- 57:45Speaker 3: from that.
- 57:45Speaker 1: How much he cares is who knows, but you'll know
- 57:48Speaker 1: like absolutely he hears you.
- 57:49Speaker 3: A lot of times you'll call and you'll see him
- 57:51Speaker 3: like start raking a bush. Like they'll kind of be
- 57:54Speaker 3: like that excites me, not gonna come over there, but
- 57:57Speaker 3: I'm gonna rake this one. You come here, and we're
- 58:01Speaker 3: doing three types of calling, cow calls, bull grunts, and raking.
- 58:06Speaker 3: So actually taking Steve was using the scapula of a
- 58:09Speaker 3: bull moose from another year, and scraping on the trees.
- 58:13Speaker 3: And these are basically the three communication mechanisms. Day one,
- 58:18Speaker 3: we see a bull way off. Later that afternoon we
- 58:20Speaker 3: spot seth spots two bulls we believe five miles away.
- 58:25Speaker 3: First day, three bulls. Second day we roll in. We're
- 58:28Speaker 3: sitting in the same spot. We have this. We have
- 58:32Speaker 3: a in our where we're hunting is a again a
- 58:36Speaker 3: saddle between two ridges, and we can probably see out
- 58:39Speaker 3: eight or nine hundred yards in this saddle, two big
- 58:43Speaker 3: draws coming up from either side. And second day, I
- 58:47Speaker 3: believe it was like ten or eleven in the morning,
- 58:50Speaker 3: we see a good bull come into our saddle. We
- 58:54Speaker 3: had no knowledge that he was really around. He just
- 58:57Speaker 3: appeared in our saddle.
- 58:59Speaker 2: Had been calling all morning.
- 59:00Speaker 3: We've been called all more so possibly he was coming
- 59:03Speaker 3: to our calls. He appears, We start calling to him
- 59:06Speaker 3: more aggressively, try to get him in close. He'll he
- 59:08Speaker 3: came into like six hundred and seventy five yards, locked
- 59:11Speaker 3: up in a spruce patch, grunded down. Well, no, you
- 59:14Speaker 3: left that was pretty prime. I'm just okay. Grunting, yeah,
- 59:19Speaker 3: crash and brush. Yeah, we thought it was on give
- 59:22Speaker 3: us a moose grunt yeah yeah, yeah, you know, like
- 59:30Speaker 3: you're walking through the woods and you get a little
- 59:33Speaker 3: your little nut tap from the brush on it. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 59:42Speaker 3: that's that's good. So this was day two and this
- 59:50Speaker 3: is we believe a mid fifties bull. So in the
- 59:54Speaker 3: in the world of big moose hunting, like American moose
- 59:57Speaker 3: are gonna be smaller. You're gonna hear guys in Montana, Idaho,
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: you know, fifty inch plus moose in those places is
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: going to be pretty big Shyrish moves. And then the
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: Canadian mood. It's going to be smaller in the yuk
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: in the Alaska Big Alaska Yukon moose, which would also
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: be in in the Yukon. British Columbia. Yeah, I don't
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: think it's I don't think it's British Columbia. British Southern
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: British Columbia is Canada moose. Yeah, I want to say
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: the upper part of BC is probably Yukon. But I
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: don't know, I don't know, but but but a good
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: shooter moose is going to be in the fifty inch range.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: Fifty inch plus top end would be like seventy inches.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: Very few people oftentimes the regulations go that. So, like
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: in the state of Alaska, they'll tweak moose regulations. Different
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: units will have different open dates, different units have different
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: closed dates, and you'll quite often see it's pretty typical
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: that a moose has to be fifty inch tip, so.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: A fifty inch spread, and or.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: They'll specify how many browtinns it needs on one side,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: so he might be in an area that has a
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: it's a three what they would call a three browtying unit,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: meaning if one of his sides has three brow times
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: is legal. You could be in a four browtying unit
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: where if one besides his four brow times, he's legal.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: But he could have zero brow times and be fifty
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: or he could have no paddles but have four brow times.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: So it's either work right and this bull would have
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: was plenty legal in both ways. Yeah, he had a
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: lot of browtimes, was well over fifty inches wide, and
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: we felt like we were going to kill him. On
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: day two, he betted down. We messed with him for
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: several hours. He was within seven hundred yards for several hours.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: He betted down three different times. But the more we
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: called to him, the more he hung around, the less
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: he was interested, and he fades off into the willow brush,
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: going away from us two o'clock that afternoon. That was
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: the last action we had on day two. We go
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: into day three, we see nothing but a cow moose.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: We sit on that hill for twelve hours. So the
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: sequence of our hunt is is that these are long
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: days up here right now, twelve hour days, and we
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: wake up when the sun starts, you know, when the
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: sky starts to get light, have some coffee, have a
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: little breakfast, head out when you can see good, get
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: on the side of the mountain and literally be there
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: to sit there for twelve hours.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: If you really you could sit till seven thirty. But
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: you could still probably shoot till eight thirty. But at
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: a point you just gotta be like, at a point,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: you've been there twelve hours.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a long set. And so it's a long
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: set when you're not seeing anything. So that that third
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: day we didn't even see the far off bulls. So
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: sometimes you're just entertained by watching through the glass these
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: bulls way off and thinking the other day is day.
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: Three, we saw the BlackBerry we're ripping through.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so, Yeah, that was like the only
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: thing we saw that day. I think.
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: Yeah, we did see one black bear. We had a
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: black bear tag, but couldn't it just we just saw
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: a flash of a black bear? Yeah, Day four, So
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: that was a tough day. We all said that that
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: was a tough day. And the other thing about this
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: hunt is that the temperatures seem like they're reasonable. You know,
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: let's say mid twenties to mid forties to mid forties,
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: and it's like that's not that cold. But man, when
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: you're out there for ten days constantly battling that, and
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: when in high humidity, we were freezing to death. We
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: were just sitting to so damn windy and you're just
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: sitting yep. So it's a real struggle to just stay warm,
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: even with good gear and like all the gear you need.
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: We were making a little fire.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: You can do it, like you can really get layered
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: up and be good, but it's just you're just not
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: doing anything to generate any warmth.
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: Yeah, like I said, ten twelve hours, so yeah, yeah,
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: but you know, but we talked about how much this
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: this type of hunting is so different than many other hunts.
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: It's a it's a unique hunt and you got to
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: be in the right state of mind to sit in
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: the same place for potentially nine or ten days, for
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: twelve hours a day and not be validated by not
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: seeing game.
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: Yeah, and a lot of whitetail hunters will say, oh,
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: that's easy. I do that all the time in November.
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: It's just different. I mean, I've done lots of all
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: day sits for white tails. It's different.
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: Yeah, So day day four we didn't see anything either,
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: did we our neighborhood I saw, I saw a glimpse
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: of the same, probably.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: The same saying those long bulls, I think.
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I picked the day four we saw the bulls
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: that were five miles away or one bull five miles
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: away and a cow close. So that's two tough days
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: and and it's it's taxing mentally, and uh, we're you know,
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: it is fun when you're with a group of guys,
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: though you're all talking the whole day and eating snacks,
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: whispering and and we we were all all of us
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: were calling, and so we we named. Everybody has a
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: little different tone and frequency and vibe with their moose call.
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: We decided that Dirt probably had the best cow moose call,
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: Seth was clearly the best bullgrunner. I'll take it, and uh,
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: and so on day five comes around and it's just
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: a game of odds.
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: I like a hunt.
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: That's just a game of odds. I can sit somewhere
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: for a long time. I'll sit there and I like
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: it when that's what you're working against. Yep, Like it
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: doesn't take a total lot of skill to just sit.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: There tacity just for days. Yeah, what did you guys say?
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: It's like there's physical suffrage, and there's.
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: There's two there's two ways of suffer hunting. Yep, there's more,
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: but like like just general stuff that's physically taxing yep.
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: You know it's like getting up and pounding it out
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: and pounding it out and hiking back up out of
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: the mountain, hiking back up the top of the mountain,
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: hiking through the swamp, whatever the hell it is. And
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: then there's just like the mental like, yeah, sitting and
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: you're looking at such a like it's.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Being like like a friend of mine who does it,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: He's like it's trusting the process that there are these
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: things they're called moose, and they are going to get
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: into the rut and they're gonna start moving, and they're
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: gonna be receptive to calling, and you need to be
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: there calling and they're gonna hear it and they're gonna.
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: Come, and it might not happen till the last day.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: Having for ten days, one of the one of the
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: boys that's seen us when we landed today saw that
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: other that other moose had. Oh that's what they look like.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: They've been out right ten days not even seen a moose. Yeah.
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Anyway, so day five comes, we go to our spot.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: We it's like you you feel like it's gonna happen,
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: but you never feel like it's gonna happen today. Yeah,
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: you know, you're like, I know, I just feel like
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: we're gonna kill a moose. We're doing the right stuff,
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: but it probably won't happen today. That's the way I
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: always feel.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: It's hard to happen, it's hard to picture it happening. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: But we did see a cow in that same zone
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: that we had seen that bull on day two, which
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: was yeah.
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: Yeah, we had a cow in our in our in
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: our saddle that was kind of in our zone. You know,
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: within eight hundred yards of us, saw a cow and
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: and again the moose. Shrut's picking up, and we we
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: know that's happening, not because of what we're seeing, but
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: just because we know it is happening. And about ten o'clock,
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: day five, Seth looks in a direction that we weren't
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: focused on a lot of attention. Well, he moved.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Mm.
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: He had been glassing for four days. From one spot.
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: He moved like six feet.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: He moved down slope to a spot he'd never before
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: sat in.
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: Yeah, had a feeling.
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: He moved down slope ever so slightly. And the minute
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: he got there, that's say to him, seeing a move
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: he said, he said, I got a bull and the
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: spruce and this bull was would we say it was
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: a mile away? At least I think it was a mile.
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: I'll tell you how far it was away it was.
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: It was, it was close to a mile. Maybe I
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: would have said three quarters.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: Of it was.
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: Okay, this is like ten o'clock, right ten o'clock in
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: the morning. And what we learned is on this landscape
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: there's let's just say there's three things going on. Tundra, willows,
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: and spruce, that's all there is, and that's part of Alaska,
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: and we man the bulls just stick.
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: It's like a willow aspen birch mix.
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you're right, aspen birch.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: It all looks very similar, assiduous hardwood.
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: It's brushy, yeah yeah, yeah yeah.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: And there's small The least of those is the spruce.
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: Where we're at, there's a little drawls of spruce. And
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: anyway Seth sees a bull sees satellite paddles. And what
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: you're looking for when you're glassing for these moose is
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: not you're not looking for moose. You're looking for paddles.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Yeah, they're white, big white.
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: Big white paddles out but it takes you a while
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: to understand the scale of what one looks like. The
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: first one you see every year, you're like, oh, oh,
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: that's what they look like from a mile and a half.
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: And they're always smaller than you think. But when I
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: see the one, when I saw the ones you found Seth,
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: five miles away, they were bigger than I thought they
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: would be.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: I thought the same.
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: But when the bull was in our saddle six hundred
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: yards away, he was way smaller than I thought. He
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: would be. It's like this game of scale, like trying
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: to figure out what they look like. So he sees one.
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: We rip a cow call and man, he slams our direction.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: We know he hears this. He locks in on us.
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: Now all four of us looking trying to find the bull,
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: and we're like, oh, we see him.
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: There he is.
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: He's looking at us, and then directly we see him
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: moving our way. And that's always a good sign when
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: you get a quick response. He just kind of moving
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: our direction. But we're not too fired up. He comes
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: around the point of this kind of on the spine
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: of this little ridge.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: It's a mile away mile sorry mile, Yeah, nevermind, I
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: can't tell.
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: Okay, in and out with the vegetation.
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you can't see him the whole you can't
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: see him. So so but he but he's coming our
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: We see him like fifty yards from where he was,
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: and he's coming our way, and we get excited hit
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: him again with a call. And you're always trying to
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: understand how much calling do we need because we felt
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: like we might have overcalled the bull that was real
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: close to us the other day, and so you're like, what,
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: what does this bull want.
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: To hear, you're like feeling him out.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: And so we noticed that every time that I called,
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: he would start moving before the he got to the
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: point where he would stop. I would call, he would
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: start moving towards me before I even finished the call. Yep,
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: And that tells you he likes it. And so we
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: called a lot and just kind of trying to guide
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: him in. And then he got into the thick aspen
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: willow brush and we could just see bits and pieces
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: of him, and the sequence from him coming to the
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: spruce to coming within three hundred yards was probably I
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: would say a forty minute ordeal thirty thirty plus, and
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: were seeing bits and pieces of him. And at first,
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: Steve Vnellas, I remember you said you didn't get the
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: vibe that he was a real big bull. I said,
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: he's not a seventy incher. Okay, okay, we can review
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: the footage. I just remember, this isn't this isn't bad.
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: I'm just saying, this is what you're going through. I'm
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: trying to describe when you first see it.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: Well, let me tell you why. Okay, I was doing Okay,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: here's where I screwed up. Early on, I was doing
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: a comparison of looking at the fronts and the paddles. Mmm,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: that'll get that'll get you on this And when you
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: see this particular animal, you will understand why.
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: Because you're like, well, what.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Why is his why why is he why does that
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: at his fronts? Yeah, which led me to have just
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: it just threw it was throwing me off. Then later
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: I was starting to get auch. Once I saw the
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: extent of it, I was starting to get a much
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: different vibe. But early on I was just I wasn't like,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: it didn't look like sheets. It didn't look like half
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: sheets supply would come in.
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: Through the woods. Yeah. So when need to wrapt this
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: up in five minutes, don't don't don't spoil the end.
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: So the bulls coming in were we're trying to we
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: know it's a shooter. It just looks like from the
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: from the man I've learned with moose, when I see paddles,
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: no matter what distance, I'm like, it's a monster. I'm
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: just just like yeah. But I when the first second
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: I saw this moose, all that registered on my mind
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: was I was like, golly, that's a lot of paddle.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: It just looked it was just the volume of paddle
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: was big, and man, the closer he got, the bigger
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: he got, and pretty soon we're getting we're all getting
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: really good looks at him, and and he's just big,
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: huge fronts and you're you're looking for brow times on
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: these bulls, and you know you're you're happy if you
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: see one with four brow tons on each side. Bulls
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: got ten brow times on both sides. Just super Nova,
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: I think that's its name. And loving your call, yeah, yeah,
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: And we're we're constantly trying to decide how much to call.
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: Every time we call. He's moving, so we keep giving
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: him what he wants, and he's not coming directly to us.
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: He's swinging around trying to get down win, which is
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: what they typically do. And but he I mean, we
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: got him because he's got a cross through a man.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: I like everything I'm here, and I like everything I'm hearing,
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: but I just like to get a little sniff before
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: I just I don't want to go barging there without
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: a little sniff yep, Like I want to get a
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: lay of the lane, like who's.
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: Up there or what's going on? Is it a bull?
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: Is it?
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: Yeah? Sniff sniff's yeah. So but we got to wrap
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: this up quick. He doesn't desperately want to get down win,
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: but he wants to get down with Yeah, and we
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: feel like every time we call it, he's just pulling
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: a little bit tighter to us. I don't know if
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: that was true.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so.
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: But we were calling a lot and you'll see this
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: on the one day this will come out and you'll
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: get to watch it. And man, I mean it was
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: that forty minute sequence was as good of a hunt
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: as there is on planet Earth. I mean, for real,
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: just watching him come, the excitement of trying to gauge
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: how big he is. Is he gonna come?
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: Is he not?
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: We've been here, we worked so hard to get here.
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: This is a crazy place. We're cold, we're tired where
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: and here he comes and then he's big, and I mean,
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: it's just it was. It was exciting. One of the
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: last things we witnessed him do.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: As he went to thrash in a tree and for
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: some reason stuck his horn down in the ground like
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: a spade shovel and.
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: Flaw threw up a cloud of soil.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: And kept walking. Yeah, like they ain't nothing.
- 1:15:54Speaker 3: Is he still out there? Is he still out there?
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: Or is he in the van? Stay tuned? Is that
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: the way we're gonna leave it. We're gonna leave it
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: like this.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, was that a miser hit or you
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: don't know?
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: And one more yeah, stay tuned. Nice ri On.
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: Seal Bran shine like silver in the sun, right right
- 1:16:53Speaker 3: on alone.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: Sweet.
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: We don't beat this day horse to death, so taking
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: a new one and ride away. We're done beat this
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: damn horse today, So take a new one and ride on.
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: H
