- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist, and also
- 0:09happen to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to.
- 0:15Teach distinctions. Possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking and just bring some joy into the world.
- 0:21So welcome to the coop and let's start your day off in a
- 0:24fantastic way. Hey everybody.
- 0:28Good morning. Actually from my desk because I
- 0:31was just reading something and I wanted to share it with all of
- 0:35you from John Kabat Zinn and his name, in case any of you want to
- 0:40look him up is spelled Jon and then Kabat KABAT and then Zinn
- 0:46Zinn. And he is a mentor for me on
- 0:51mindfulness. And this time of year, I always
- 0:54have to get into that really deep state of mindfulness and
- 0:58being very present in the moment because I have a huge tendency
- 1:01to future pace the everything that I'm doing on the farm.
- 1:05And I'm thinking in the future, thinking in the future, thinking
- 1:07in the future. And then I'm remembering all the
- 1:10things that happened last year, looking at my notes going back,
- 1:13which is great because I need to see what worked and what didn't
- 1:17work. But it as always, this farm
- 1:19provides me with a vast sense of reality checks and just having
- 1:26to be in the present moment. So let me share something from
- 1:29his book. Wherever you go, there you are.
- 1:32And this is just, it's such a profound little summary of this.
- 1:37The popular view is that we have plenty of time ahead.
- 1:39There are so many opportunities and chances come with this idea.
- 1:45However, neither the past nor the future exists.
- 1:48All we have is the present moment.
- 1:50Yet we dream about the future or look back into the past.
- 1:53We expect our fate, self fated self to advance over our
- 1:58history, including mistakes and regrets.
- 2:01Bearing this in our minds, we often stand still and think now
- 2:05what without realizing There doesn't necessarily have to be a
- 2:08plan. You can quickly lose touch with
- 2:11your inner self without connecting with your present.
- 2:15As a result, you end up living in inertia.
- 2:17The later. The latter strangles the
- 2:20possibility of creativity, the ability to learn new things, and
- 2:23the growth and your growth as a person.
- 2:25If you allow this to continue for long periods of time, your
- 2:28life will pass seemingly instantly.
- 2:31Living in the present moment helps us appreciate what we
- 2:34have, making us happier. Wow.
- 2:38When you really think about this and you really focus on the fact
- 2:42that that one line, it's like the future is isn't not here yet
- 2:48and the past is gone. And when you pay attention to
- 2:52the fact that neither of them exists anymore, only this
- 2:57present moment exists. What makes something exist to us
- 3:01is our memory and our creativity and imagination for the future,
- 3:05which is powerful stuff. And I live and use that all the
- 3:08time. But when we start to really pay
- 3:11attention to this and how the present moment helps us and just
- 3:15staying focused on this particular piece, this moment.
- 3:20Now he, he's a big proponent of meditation.
- 3:23And while I try it, I really suck at it.
- 3:25And I've confessed this before. I do much better with being in
- 3:28the moment because it's, you know, it's easier for me to stay
- 3:35in this moment because I'm so visual and I can see things and
- 3:38feel things and touch things and that's good.
- 3:40And that's my, sometimes my form of active meditation, mindful
- 3:45meditation, being out and, you know, touching things,
- 3:48photographing things and whatnot.
- 3:50So you have to find your way of doing it.
- 3:52But really it, it, it does when you start to control this and
- 3:58you start to stay focused on this, the beautiful effects it
- 4:02has on us is profound. I mean, it has taken away so
- 4:07much of my inner anxiety over the years.
- 4:11And really just saying 1 moment at the time, 1 moment a step at
- 4:15a time and just staying focused on that gives you a powerful
- 4:19stance and it gives you a powerful way to be able to, you
- 4:24know, recognize where you're going off the rails.
- 4:27For me, that's always what's important.
- 4:28Where am I going off the rails? And we just have to move forward
- 4:33and we have to say, OK, I'm in this moment, I'm in this moment
- 4:38and, and get it done. That doesn't mean that you don't
- 4:40sit down and make your list of things you have to do and know
- 4:43what you have to do for the day. But with each one of those
- 4:46particular tasks that you're doing, you have already planned
- 4:50it. You don't need to keep thinking
- 4:52about it when it comes up. You do it and you stay present
- 4:55with it. And ironically, it will take you
- 4:58less time to do those tasks because your head is not
- 5:01somewhere else. Your thoughts are not somewhere
- 5:04else. Your focus is on the here and
- 5:06now. And that's what's so important.
- 5:08A consciousness really requires us to be in the present moment,
- 5:13to do it fully and to gain everything from it.
- 5:16So is this something that you master?
- 5:20I don't know. I, I don't have it mastered, but
- 5:22what I do is practice it every day because I love the idea of
- 5:26practicing something every single day.
- 5:28And for me, this was a huge solution to calm, inner calm,
- 5:33inner peace. So I hope you give it a try.
- 5:37I hope you grab Mr. Zinn's book and listen to him because he's
- 5:42brilliant and his voice is very soothing when you listen to him.
- 5:45So I hope you guys have a blessed day and I will see you
- 5:48all tomorrow. Bye.
