- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Good morning, I'm Sarah Strickland. A warning, some of the
- 0:08Speaker 2: details in this story are disturbing. There's a new and
- 0:11Speaker 2: chilling development in the case surrounding the Tumbler Ridge mass
- 0:15Speaker 2: shooting earlier this year. The incident, one of the worst
- 0:19Speaker 2: mass shootings in Canadian history, claimed the lives of nine people,
- 0:23Speaker 2: including the shooter. A 30-year-old in Washington state has been
- 0:26Speaker 2: charged with conspiracy to murder people in a foreign country
- 0:30Speaker 2: after allegedly providing support and money to the shooter. Acting U.S.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Attorney Neil Floyd says the investigation revealed that James Cody
- 0:39Speaker 2: Bryant had been in regular and repeated contact with the
- 0:42Speaker 2: 18-year-old shooter, providing advice and even offering to live stream
- 0:47Speaker 2: the events. Floyd outlined the horrific extent of Bryant's involvement.
- 0:52Speaker 3: 30-year-old James Cody Bryant had the information and ability to
- 0:56Speaker 3: alert law enforcement and even discussed that possibility with the shooter,
- 1:01Speaker 3: but he chose not to. Instead, he encouraged and offered
- 1:04Speaker 3: assistance to a murderer. As one example, after killing two
- 1:08Speaker 3: of his own relatives, when the shooter had trouble starting
- 1:13Speaker 3: his own car, Bryant provided advice and offered assistance on
- 1:17Speaker 3: how to get the car started so that JVR could
- 1:19Speaker 3: proceed to the school and kill children.
- 1:23Speaker 2: The British Columbia government has filed a lawsuit in California
- 1:26Speaker 2: against OpenAI for failing to alert authorities to disturbing conversations
- 1:31Speaker 2: the shooter had on chat GPT, despite the fact that
- 1:35Speaker 2: they had been flagged by employees. Premier Tony Wakeham says
- 1:39Speaker 2: he will underscore the potential for both provinces in the
- 1:42Speaker 2: new Churchill Falls deal when he speaks with the upcoming
- 1:46Speaker 2: PQ Premier of Quebec. Tony Wakeham says his team reached
- 1:49Speaker 2: out to Premier-elect Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon Tuesday night with the
- 1:53Speaker 2: hope that the two would speak today. The governing Collé-Champs Avenir,
- 1:57Speaker 2: which reached the Churchill Falls deal with Newfoundland and Labrador,
- 2:01Speaker 2: were wiped off the political map. Wakeham says the PQ's
- 2:04Speaker 2: election message wasn't about tearing anything up. It was more
- 2:08Speaker 2: focused on review.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Looking forward to having that conversation and for them to doing,
- 2:14Speaker 4: getting him brought up to speed on the file with
- 2:17Speaker 4: Hydro-Quebec and others. You know, both officials from Hydro-Quebec and
- 2:22Speaker 4: officials from Newfoundland Hydro, of course, have been working continuously
- 2:27Speaker 4: towards definitive agreements. And there's work to be done. But
- 2:32Speaker 4: hoping that after the Premier has a chance to review it,
- 2:37Speaker 4: the new incumbent Premier has a chance to review it,
- 2:39Speaker 4: we'll continue to move forward.
- 2:42Speaker 2: A woman has been charged with impaired following a hit-and-run
- 2:45Speaker 2: in Carboneer over the weekend. RCMP were called just after 8.30
- 2:49Speaker 2: Saturday evening to a home on London Road after a
- 2:52Speaker 2: vehicle crashed into a parked car and left the scene.
- 2:55Speaker 2: The callers suspected that the driver involved may have been impaired.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Officers located a vehicle matching the description parked nearby. Police
- 3:04Speaker 2: say the driver, a 57-year-old woman, provided a breath sample
- 3:07Speaker 2: that was more than twice the legal limit. The accused
- 3:10Speaker 2: will appear in court in December. Her license was suspended
- 3:14Speaker 2: and the vehicle impounded. There's another small break in the
- 3:18Speaker 2: price of gasoline. The PUB dropped the price by nearly
- 3:22Speaker 2: three cents per liter. Diesel on the island is up
- 3:25Speaker 2: by a cent and a half, while there's hardly any
- 3:28Speaker 2: change to the price in Labrador West. Furnace oil is
- 3:31Speaker 2: up by roughly a cent. The price of stove oil
- 3:34Speaker 2: in Lab West remains relatively unchanged.
- 3:38Speaker 1: The U.S.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after a Delta Airlines plane
- 3:43Speaker 2: clipped an Air Canada aircraft at Los Angeles International Airport
- 3:47Speaker 2: yesterday morning. Here's Jason White.
- 3:49Speaker 4: U.S.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Federal Aviation Administration says it happened as a Delta Airlines
- 3:54Speaker 1: plane was taxiing for departure and the Air Canada plane
- 3:57Speaker 1: was being towed toward the gate. The Delta plane's left
- 4:00Speaker 1: wing tip clipped the Air Canada aircraft's horizontal stabilizer. That's
- 4:05Speaker 1: a wing-like structure at the tail end of a plane.
- 4:07Speaker 1: An Air Canada spokesperson says no injuries were reported and
- 4:11Speaker 1: the plane is being taken out of service for inspection
- 4:14Speaker 1: and repairs. Jason White, the Canadian Press.
- 4:18Speaker 2: The Kids Eat Smart Foundation is celebrating those who make
- 4:21Speaker 2: its breakfast programs in schools across the province happen. This
- 4:26Speaker 2: is Kids Eat Smart Week across Newfoundland and Labrador. The
- 4:29Speaker 2: foundation kicked things off yesterday with an event at East
- 4:32Speaker 2: Point Elementary in St. John's. Executive Director Selena Stoyles says
- 4:37Speaker 2: the provincial government gives them nearly $ 1. 4 million in funding
- 4:41Speaker 2: every year, but it takes $ 5. 8 million to do their programming.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Stoyles says inflation has driven up the cost of serving
- 4:49Speaker 2: the meals by 29 percent.
- 4:51Speaker 5: The reality is in Newfoundland and Labrador, we have the
- 4:54Speaker 5: highest child poverty in the country, and we know that
- 4:57Speaker 5: the stats are telling us that one in three children
- 5:00Speaker 5: under the age of 18 lives in a food insecure
- 5:03Speaker 5: home or a home without food.
- 5:04Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
