- 0:36Speaker 1: goal and he's going after it. This is the movie

- 0:43Speaker 1: ninety nine's American movie the documentary following two filmmakers or

- 1:33Speaker 1: mister big shot himself, Brandon vic Brandon. How you doing today,
- 1:36Speaker 1: my man?
- 1:38Speaker 2: You know I'm not doing too bad? But I did
- 1:40Speaker 2: have my first sunburn of the season.
- 1:42Speaker 1: So right, well it is March of twenty twenty six,
- 1:46Speaker 1: so that is.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Right. Well, you know, it's pretty bad.
- 1:51Speaker 1: It's starting to get over warm on.
- 1:54Speaker 2: A totally different movie on my mind. Yeah, you know
- 1:59Speaker 2: what a case. Valentine's Day was wonderful. My kid had
- 2:04Speaker 2: a birthday. I'm not peeling, I'm not. Yeah, no, it's fine.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I mean the song comes out in March.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I don't know if it does anymore. Yeah, it's twenty six,
- 2:17Speaker 2: I'm not sure.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. The state of the world's affairs.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Y, yeah, there's only three countries left.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I had a dark thought not too long ago.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Was it this year?
- 2:28Speaker 1: Yeah? No, no, no, it was last year. It was last year, sorry,
- 2:31Speaker 1: last summer. As a matter of fact, we do these
- 2:36Speaker 1: episodes like so far in advance that I mean, they're
- 2:40Speaker 1: evergreen shows. So the only risk that we run is
- 2:44Speaker 1: like if somebody in the movie dies or something in between,
- 2:48Speaker 1: eight months advance that we record these things. Yeah, makes
- 2:51Speaker 1: the episode might look a little insensitive. Yeah, it's the
- 2:56Speaker 1: risk we run. But I was thinking, like, man, what if,
- 3:00Speaker 1: like we're recording these episodes and I'm scheduling them to
- 3:04Speaker 1: release eight months in advance, and like the world just
- 3:08Speaker 1: completely falls into chaos and it is the Walking Dead
- 3:13Speaker 1: just a complete dystopian future. But there are still new
- 3:17Speaker 1: episodes of the movie review Rewind podcast that.
- 3:21Speaker 2: It could a highlight of someone's day.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah, theme song playing on like a zombies head like
- 3:28Speaker 3: with headphones.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's like, man, the world has fallen apart,
- 3:34Speaker 1: But how are these guys still producing podcasts?
- 3:38Speaker 2: How are they doing it? And then depending on the
- 3:40Speaker 2: movie we're talking about, would be a real like today
- 3:45Speaker 2: would be like if.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It would the world's ending, and these guys haven't even
- 3:51Speaker 1: mentioned it. They're just talking about their sunburns.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean I did have one.
- 3:57Speaker 1: It's because we recorded it eight months in advance.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I don't really like I don't. I don't know. I
- 4:02Speaker 2: don't like being outside really.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I mean it's fine. I can hang by the pool
- 4:07Speaker 2: a few hours, but I gotta go in. I can
- 4:10Speaker 2: hang at the beach for a few hours, but I
- 4:12Speaker 2: gotta go in.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 2: And I and of all the years that have known
- 4:16Speaker 2: my wife, I don't I just don't understand why she
- 4:19Speaker 2: doesn't understand them. I have perfectly I've made it very clear.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I don't like it. I hate putting on skunscreen, on sunscreen,
- 4:28Speaker 2: but I have to. My feet look like their three socks,
- 4:32Speaker 2: white socks are on them, but I don't care.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I like being outside, but I hate the beach and
- 4:38Speaker 1: my wife has My wife has accepted that to the
- 4:42Speaker 1: point where now she will make fun of me because
- 4:45Speaker 1: we'll have like a tiny umbrella out there and I
- 4:47Speaker 1: will be like curled up, yeah, meeting umbrella, and she's
- 4:49Speaker 1: like taking pictures like look at this loser.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Oh, here's the thing. I'm fine with sitting on a
- 4:55Speaker 2: balcony listening to the ocean. Same here, reading a book
- 4:59Speaker 2: or having to drink and I'm fine. I just make
- 5:02Speaker 2: me in the Yeah, you bake me in the sand.
- 5:05Speaker 2: And you have other people that are interfering. But because
- 5:08Speaker 2: I have a kid, I have to make it fun
- 5:11Speaker 2: for him, so I can't be that guy that you
- 5:14Speaker 2: know where I'm like, all I do is bitch and
- 5:17Speaker 2: moan until we go till somebody takes me inside so
- 5:21Speaker 2: I can sleep. But I don't know. I spend all
- 5:24Speaker 2: my time like at the pool and stuff, and my
- 5:26Speaker 2: wife's like, hey, do you want to jump in I'm like,
- 5:30Speaker 2: I did this shit yesterday, Like I can't keep doing it. Like,
- 5:33Speaker 2: let's go in. Like when my son's like, oh, should
- 5:36Speaker 2: we watch The Grinch when it's you know, June, I'm like, sure,
- 5:41Speaker 2: whatever gets me gets me off and the fucking ac Yeah, fine,
- 5:46Speaker 2: I'm okay with it.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I just hate the sand. I'm a sweater. We've already
- 5:50Speaker 1: discussed this on our Best of twenty twenty five podcasts
- 5:54Speaker 1: last July. That's right, which I'm sure you guys all
- 5:56Speaker 1: listen to probably, but yeah, I like my body retains moisture,
- 6:01Speaker 1: so if I sit in the sand, I'm gonna it's
- 6:04Speaker 1: gonna stick to me.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Well, and it's like it's and I tell my wife,
- 6:08Speaker 2: I'm like, it's like getting sick because sunburn. It's it's
- 6:10Speaker 2: it's an inconvenience. If you you don't know what you
- 6:14Speaker 2: can wear, you take a shower, it hurts, and then
- 6:17Speaker 2: like I'll show where like my shoulders are a bit
- 6:19Speaker 2: red and she's like, like everyone basically just calls me
- 6:22Speaker 2: a pansy, you know, like hey, that's fine and stuff.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And so what I end up doing is hiding it
- 6:28Speaker 2: when I'm laying in bed because it does hurt, but
- 6:30Speaker 2: I can't really speak out because yeah, made fun of right,
- 6:34Speaker 2: no one understands it within my family, and I'm like, okay, well,
- 6:39Speaker 2: I guess I just won't say anything. And then like
- 6:41Speaker 2: my brother in law and stuff will come up to
- 6:43Speaker 2: me and touch my shoulder and I try not to
- 6:45Speaker 2: piss my pants because it hurts, but if I tell
- 6:47Speaker 2: him it.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Hurts, he's gonna do it more. Right.
- 6:50Speaker 2: I may be an only child, but I'm no fool.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I know what people will will jump on and pick apart.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Something spoken like a true graduate of the Harvard of
- 6:59Speaker 1: the South MTSU, which we also happen to have at
- 7:03Speaker 1: the table with. This is another graduate of the Harvard
- 7:06Speaker 1: of the South MTSU. That other voice you hear is
- 7:08Speaker 1: our buddy, Brett. He's back. We're gonna talk about American
- 7:11Speaker 1: movie today. Brett. How are you doing?
- 7:13Speaker 3: I'm doing good. Let me give you a life hack
- 7:15Speaker 3: for the beach. Oh yeah. We we take an annual
- 7:18Speaker 3: beach trip usually, and I have invested in not one,
- 7:22Speaker 3: but multiple long sleeve sunshirts. You know, you know, like
- 7:27Speaker 3: a cool kid.
- 7:29Speaker 2: And let me let me stop you there. I will
- 7:33Speaker 2: tell you the first day I got some burnt. I
- 7:37Speaker 2: put on my long sleeve shirt and swim in the
- 7:40Speaker 2: damn face so it would not do it.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Yes, let me clarify when I say long sleeve sunshirt,
- 7:47Speaker 3: I mean for swimming too.
- 7:49Speaker 2: No, No, I I have my shorts that show my nutsack,
- 7:53Speaker 2: but I will cover my my chest in my arms
- 7:56Speaker 2: because those can't get some burnt. But also my family
- 8:00Speaker 2: has a history of skin cancer, so parts of me
- 8:03Speaker 2: like I can't get past that. But but yes, I'm like,
- 8:07Speaker 2: as soon as my shoulders and back got red, I
- 8:10Speaker 2: told my wife, I said, that's it. I'm putting on.
- 8:14Speaker 2: I'm putting on my shirt. And I usually will like
- 8:17Speaker 2: go in the ocean and stuff and then just put
- 8:19Speaker 2: it back on like you send in the beach. Put
- 8:20Speaker 2: it back on, turn it, you know, take it off.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I just don't let my nipples hang out anymore. But
- 8:27Speaker 2: those long sea I'm good. Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 8:30Speaker 2: give a show like Columbia's things that those are very nice. Now,
- 8:36Speaker 2: I still try to keep it classy and try to
- 8:37Speaker 2: match them with my bathing suit. Sure, that is a
- 8:41Speaker 2: nice hack. And it's actually nice at the ocean because
- 8:45Speaker 2: the beach with the wind and the breeze. It's better
- 8:48Speaker 2: than you're pretty Kentucky in the in the fucking desert
- 8:53Speaker 2: in them.
- 8:54Speaker 3: I actually I said it's march I both of you guys.
- 8:58Speaker 3: I was a sporting a trademark Sobros. Tank top recently
- 9:04Speaker 3: and I sent you guys a picture of that, and
- 9:06Speaker 3: Brandon mentioned the white T shirt that was underneath it,
- 9:10Speaker 3: which was my skin. I had been at the beach
- 9:13Speaker 3: four days before that.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Well then you covered yourself.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Well yeah, well I actually.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Laughed because I was gonna say white turtleneck. But I observed,
- 9:21Speaker 2: well your picture. I don't know if that makes sense
- 9:24Speaker 2: back and definitely do tea.
- 9:25Speaker 3: It would have worked. I used to try to get
- 9:28Speaker 3: a tan. This used to be a thing that I
- 9:31Speaker 3: tried to work on. But then I thought, who am I?
- 9:34Speaker 3: Who am I getting a tan for?
- 9:35Speaker 2: Isn't that I think that's probably every I think that's
- 9:39Speaker 2: every guy's thing. Is like when you're tan in the summer,
- 9:43Speaker 2: need to be like I did to do tanning band
- 9:44Speaker 2: and stuff like that. But I would try and like
- 9:46Speaker 2: go out and like get in the pool and like
- 9:49Speaker 2: you wouldn't put sunscreen on, or if you did, it
- 9:51Speaker 2: would be I don't know, thirty or something like that.
- 9:54Speaker 2: But I tell you what, guys, I haven't given. I
- 9:57Speaker 2: haven't cared, and I mean it int least ten years.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I used to sunbathe completely nude, which the house I
- 10:05Speaker 1: grew up in, there were parts of the property where
- 10:07Speaker 1: you could and not be seen. But I would wear
- 10:11Speaker 1: like the tanning oil and I would just roast out
- 10:14Speaker 1: there and I would think like, I'm this is gonna
- 10:17Speaker 1: be the summer. I'm gonna get tan. And I would
- 10:18Speaker 1: get so red and I think, yeah, we got some
- 10:22Speaker 1: color today, and then the next morning I would wake
- 10:24Speaker 1: up and be as pale as ever.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I don't know if yeah, I was gonna say, I
- 10:27Speaker 2: don't know if I ever would consider where you were
- 10:31Speaker 2: tan like you got sun.
- 10:33Speaker 1: If I ever got tan, it was by accident because
- 10:36Speaker 1: I was just mowing the lawn exactly sunscreen sleeveless shirt.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Yeah, but you're to your point, Brett. That long sleeve
- 10:46Speaker 2: shirt is kind of what I live by now, and
- 10:48Speaker 2: I sort of feel like I have to in case
- 10:51Speaker 2: I get burnt. But also I just don't like it.
- 10:54Speaker 2: And then I don't know. I'm a baby about it too.
- 10:57Speaker 2: I don't, I don't I don't want to have to
- 11:00Speaker 2: put something on it hurts and stuff like that. But
- 11:03Speaker 2: but yeah, I chuckled at my joke when I sent it,
- 11:06Speaker 2: but I really wanted to say white turtle.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Now you should have That would have worked.
- 11:11Speaker 2: But you were kind of tan around your throat.
- 11:14Speaker 3: With my face and my neck because that's all that
- 11:16Speaker 3: the sunshirt wasn't.
- 11:17Speaker 2: But I did not know that that was your fourth day,
- 11:20Speaker 2: and I thought that was, well, good for you. You
- 11:22Speaker 2: covered it. But yeah, no, I don't care about being
- 11:24Speaker 2: tan anymore. I honestly don't really care. Like when I
- 11:29Speaker 2: walk out there, I don't I'm at an age where
- 11:31Speaker 2: I just don't. I don't care. I don't care if
- 11:35Speaker 2: I don't look good. I don't care if people think
- 11:38Speaker 2: I'm white as a ghost. I don't care. I have
- 11:40Speaker 2: my own family make fun of me. But you know
- 11:42Speaker 2: what I'm not. I'm not sun burnt. I'm not hurting,
- 11:44Speaker 2: and I don't care. My son gets tanned, my wife
- 11:47Speaker 2: gets tanned. They barely put in on any sunscreen. My
- 11:51Speaker 2: sister in law does the same and they get burnt
- 11:54Speaker 2: and then they kind of move on, and I'm just like,
- 11:56Speaker 2: that ain't me, It ain't about me, And I think
- 11:59Speaker 2: some burn. It's a big deal in March. Yeah, talking
- 12:04Speaker 2: about this everything is so hot. I mean, you need
- 12:08Speaker 2: to start thinking about it in March.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Really, we are here to talk about American Movie. That's right,
- 12:15Speaker 1: fabled documentary, one of my favorite documentaries of all times.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I'm so glad we revisited it.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Yeah, And it was just a weird instant instance where
- 12:25Speaker 1: I was scrolling through Amazon Prime one day last summer
- 12:29Speaker 1: and I just happened to see American Movie available. You
- 12:33Speaker 1: didn't have to rener buy it. And it's it's kind
- 12:36Speaker 1: of and it's kind of a hard movie to come by.
- 12:39Speaker 1: It doesn't feel like this is streaming everywhere. It's not readily.
- 12:45Speaker 1: And when I saw it, I was immediately just the
- 12:49Speaker 1: memories of seeing this for the first time just flooded
- 12:52Speaker 1: back to me, and I thought, Man, if we can
- 12:56Speaker 1: get this was in this one in This is one
- 12:59Speaker 1: that I would liked to talk about because I haven't
- 13:03Speaker 1: watched it since first seeing it back years ago. At
- 13:07Speaker 1: this point, I think it had been out for a
- 13:09Speaker 1: little bit when I saw it. It was released in
- 13:12Speaker 1: nineteen ninety nine. I think the the festival run might
- 13:15Speaker 1: have even been ninety eight. I can't I didn't jot
- 13:18Speaker 1: it down, but I don't think I saw it until
- 13:22Speaker 1: high school, maybe senior year, like two thousand and three,
- 13:25Speaker 1: two thousand and fourish. But it did have a bit
- 13:28Speaker 1: of a cult following, still has.
- 13:30Speaker 2: A sun still. Yeah, I was just saying it was
- 13:32Speaker 2: a sundance hit.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Still has a cult following to this dance.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I mean, do you guys remember how we heard about
- 13:41Speaker 1: this film to begin with? Because I feel like this
- 13:44Speaker 1: would have been under the radar for us as teenagers.
- 13:47Speaker 3: I think at college, well, this is my exposure, and
- 13:51Speaker 3: I'm guessing maybe for all of us. A friend of
- 13:53Speaker 3: mine in high school, who I think you guys don't
- 13:56Speaker 3: know that well, but showed this to me for the
- 13:58Speaker 3: first time, and and it was just like, you've got
- 14:03Speaker 3: to see these guys. You've got to see how ridiculous
- 14:05Speaker 3: they are, like almost kind of like this can't be real.
- 14:08Speaker 3: But you think you got to see this, And so
- 14:12Speaker 3: maybe I told you guys about it from there. I
- 14:14Speaker 3: know that's the way that I learned about it.
- 14:16Speaker 1: It could have been, it could have been.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I'll be honest, I don't I know I've seen it,
- 14:21Speaker 2: but I don't remember how, and I don't know if
- 14:24Speaker 2: I rented it like a Hollywood video or I don't
- 14:28Speaker 2: think I saw it in theaters, and if I did,
- 14:30Speaker 2: I feel like it's a Bellcourt thing, and I probably
- 14:33Speaker 2: didn't in nineteen ninety nine. I don't know. I don't
- 14:38Speaker 2: know that.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Could be it was, if I'm not mistaken. I think
- 14:43Speaker 1: Brett's story is kind of kind of stirring something in
- 14:47Speaker 1: me because I do feel like at that age, I
- 14:52Speaker 1: know this didn't get like a they weren't playing this
- 14:55Speaker 1: down at Aubrey Mills, yeah, or Friday night movies that
- 14:58Speaker 1: we used to go to. I think we had a
- 15:00Speaker 1: mutual friend that had the DVD and it was a
- 15:03Speaker 1: similar situation that was like, you have to watch this.
- 15:06Speaker 1: These guys are this is so incredibly funny.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Yeah, allowed to say, who told you that? You think
- 15:14Speaker 2: we may know?
- 15:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a friend named Matt Wilson that went
- 15:18Speaker 3: to Mount Juliet.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I know who you're talking about, but.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Ours was Mark. Mark had the DVD.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw it probably for the first time, and
- 15:30Speaker 3: I was probably a junior or so in high school,
- 15:31Speaker 3: so probably like two thousand and three, a few years
- 15:34Speaker 3: after it came out.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I think it was I think it was somewhere in
- 15:38Speaker 1: that range that he had the.
- 15:39Speaker 2: DVD and was like, yeah, you just.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Like it was one of those I remember the conversation
- 15:45Speaker 1: being like, I can't explain it, you just have to see.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's that's probably true.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I will say back then, highly quotable movie. I mean,
- 15:55Speaker 1: I think we we said kick fucking ass. I got
- 15:58Speaker 1: a MasterCard. I don't know how I've.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Met Yes, And I have said it to my wife
- 16:04Speaker 2: and she looks at me in very strange ways, and
- 16:08Speaker 2: I'm so glad I was able to show her or
- 16:10Speaker 2: it all, or it all originated?
- 16:13Speaker 3: Did you get her to watch the whole thing?
- 16:18Speaker 2: She was in the room with me when I watched it.
- 16:21Speaker 2: She first heard me cuss because Amazon Prime it wasn't free,
- 16:26Speaker 2: but she was in the room. I think she thought
- 16:32Speaker 2: it was. It almost comes across as it could be
- 16:34Speaker 2: a fake movie, because you can't believe. But I mean,
- 16:38Speaker 2: one you have.
- 16:38Speaker 3: I think a lot of people thought that.
- 16:40Speaker 1: A lot of the letterbox reviews are like I was
- 16:43Speaker 1: an hour into this before I realized this is not
- 16:45Speaker 1: a mockumation.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Here's the thing is, I could see that now, but
- 16:49Speaker 2: seeing it in nineteen ninety nine, I could see you.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I mean, I get that, I get that thought process,
- 16:57Speaker 2: but yeah, she was in it. However, she did come
- 17:00Speaker 2: in late because I'd already started watching it while I
- 17:03Speaker 2: was working. Maybe I had passed the kick fucking ass.
- 17:08Speaker 2: I got a MasterCard, so I watched like the rest
- 17:12Speaker 2: of it, and I started rewinding and she was like,
- 17:14Speaker 2: why are you Are you going to show him? Like, yes,
- 17:17Speaker 2: I want you to see every piece of mail he
- 17:21Speaker 2: opens until he gets to that point. I was like,
- 17:23Speaker 2: because it's all so perfectly executed for something that I like,
- 17:29Speaker 2: you can't recreate, Like, you can't recreate something. I mean,
- 17:33Speaker 2: who would think someon would be excited about that anyway?
- 17:36Speaker 2: But the guys, I mean, the people that they got
- 17:39Speaker 2: and God bless them. I'm chasing your dream and the
- 17:43Speaker 2: way his the way his parents and that one brother
- 17:47Speaker 2: who's so honest about where he thought he'd be a
- 17:49Speaker 2: serial killer. Like it is, it's it's a it's it's
- 17:54Speaker 2: pure comedy, but it's also like, really, me watching it
- 18:01Speaker 2: now is like, oh, like there is some serious stuff
- 18:07Speaker 2: going on that is not addressed. It's I don't know
- 18:12Speaker 2: if it's a family thing or a culture thing, but
- 18:15Speaker 2: clearly it's not. It's it's not being hashed out. And
- 18:20Speaker 2: there's a guy that feels like he's trapped, but obviously
- 18:22Speaker 2: everyone is like, yes, you know he and you know
- 18:25Speaker 2: there are times where the guy knows what he's talking about.
- 18:29Speaker 2: But the stuff that he's washing the lens, I mean,
- 18:32Speaker 2: there's stuffy. He just doesn't have the resources most people
- 18:35Speaker 2: would and that's basically what it is. But the difference
- 18:38Speaker 2: it makes and just the the cast of characters that
- 18:43Speaker 2: he has is involved.
- 18:45Speaker 1: It's kind of crazy though, how is it's it's in
- 18:49Speaker 1: my notes as well, but like, what an interesting study
- 18:53Speaker 1: in psychology that he gots so many people to like
- 18:56Speaker 1: buy in on this, you believe in him.
- 18:59Speaker 2: And whenever that show was that he put on it,
- 19:01Speaker 2: which by the way, was only like a thirty minute
- 19:03Speaker 2: short that he ended up making. Yeah, that the line
- 19:08Speaker 2: is stuff like it. It is amazing and it's in
- 19:11Speaker 2: its own right, even though like the stuff they showed,
- 19:15Speaker 2: which what I love is you can clearly see that
- 19:19Speaker 2: this is over years because the man has a different haircut.
- 19:23Speaker 4: He looks older, Like, clearly this is taking nothing's done.
- 19:29Speaker 4: I mean, was it three or four years the guy
- 19:31Speaker 4: were talking, which I love the whole.
- 19:34Speaker 2: That guy who thinks he's a thespian it in acting.
- 19:37Speaker 2: I forgot his name, Robert, Yes, but he reminds me
- 19:41Speaker 2: of who is that wrestler manager guy who is the devil?
- 19:45Speaker 2: Oh gosh, that's who he reminded me of.
- 19:50Speaker 1: He does, he does?
- 19:52Speaker 2: I saw him, and I'm like, I didn't.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Remember his name. It was really really interesting to rewatch
- 19:57Speaker 1: this through a different lens, being older, having experienced a
- 20:01Speaker 1: little more life.
- 20:03Speaker 3: I just want to insert here. Mark was thirty. Yeah, yeah,
- 20:07Speaker 3: so we're almost ten years older than he was when.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Yeah. But like being I don't know, man, being podcasters, ourselves,
- 20:16Speaker 1: being writers, ourselves that like you can relate to his
- 20:22Speaker 1: unflinching desire to make art, to make something of himself,
- 20:30Speaker 1: to chase his dreams. And I think that was something
- 20:33Speaker 1: I didn't really appreciate the time. At the time, it
- 20:36Speaker 1: did kind of feel like this was comedy. We're pointing
- 20:39Speaker 1: and laughing a little bit, and watching it in twenty
- 20:44Speaker 1: twenty five, or excuse me, March of twenty six, I
- 20:48Speaker 1: did find myself relating to it in a way that
- 20:51Speaker 1: I didn't before, and almost admiring Mark for his like
- 20:57Speaker 1: just unwavering commitment. At one point, they're talking about I
- 21:02Speaker 1: can't remember who one of the like you said, the
- 21:05Speaker 1: cast of characters, and they're just asking him, like, we've
- 21:09Speaker 1: been working on this for like three years. We were
- 21:12Speaker 1: supposed to be working on this movie, but instead we're
- 21:15Speaker 1: working on this one. Nobody really knows what's going on,
- 21:17Speaker 1: but like his power and his like willingness to just
- 21:22Speaker 1: push through and to get something done like that. I
- 21:27Speaker 1: don't know, Like watching it again just made me feel
- 21:31Speaker 1: like and this is kind of what the creative spirit's
- 21:34Speaker 1: all about in a way.
- 21:35Speaker 3: I agree, Oh yeah, it was. It was touching to me.
- 21:39Speaker 3: This yeah insane, Like say, the first time I saw it,
- 21:42Speaker 3: it was you're not gonna believe these are Yeah, I
- 21:46Speaker 3: mean it was. Honestly, it was exploitation kind of this
- 21:49Speaker 3: like make fun of these people, which.
- 21:51Speaker 1: One of the main criticisms of the film. There are
- 21:53Speaker 1: a lot of people that say, oh, the filmmakers are
- 21:56Speaker 1: exploiting the subjects. But someone on on Letterbox wrote it
- 22:01Speaker 1: in their review is like, I don't want to live
- 22:04Speaker 1: in a world where this Mark story is not told. Yes,
- 22:07Speaker 1: And I agree completely because there is something that is
- 22:13Speaker 1: so like quintessentially American dream about it is like he
- 22:19Speaker 1: has this passion. It's like almost a compulsion. It's not
- 22:23Speaker 1: even something that he wants to do. It's something that
- 22:26Speaker 1: he has to do. He has to get this out
- 22:27Speaker 1: of him. He has to to make this film and
- 22:30Speaker 1: he has to make it big and all that, and
- 22:33Speaker 1: there there's something that I don't know. To me is
- 22:37Speaker 1: like again I come back to being empathetic towards him,
- 22:43Speaker 1: Like this is not a case where these are just
- 22:46Speaker 1: goofy guys that don't know what they're they're doing. They're
- 22:49Speaker 1: goofy guys, but like there's there's clearly still a vision here.
- 22:53Speaker 1: And to your point, Brandon, there are a lot of
- 22:57Speaker 1: things in this film that are kind of glossed over
- 22:59Speaker 1: that are just mentioned in passing that you kind of
- 23:02Speaker 1: stop and think, like, maybe there are some real issues
- 23:06Speaker 1: here that are preventing him from doing this more efficiently
- 23:10Speaker 1: sort of deal. But I think at the end of
- 23:13Speaker 1: the day, I still I watched this movie and I thought, man, like,
- 23:19Speaker 1: these are these are people worth celebrating?
- 23:22Speaker 2: Yeah, well, and I think it is part that where
- 23:25Speaker 2: rewatching it at the age I'm at is you don't
- 23:33Speaker 2: have to believe in him, But he believes in him,
- 23:36Speaker 2: and no matter what your judgment of that is, and
- 23:40Speaker 2: what he's able to do with what he has, and
- 23:43Speaker 2: clearly it's not I mean, you know, from his parents
- 23:48Speaker 2: to his brothers and everyone else, he's not supposed to
- 23:51Speaker 2: even make a single thing, much less the stuff that
- 23:56Speaker 2: he has made, and made the short film and didn't
- 23:59Speaker 2: have a budget. But it's also it is kind of
- 24:03Speaker 2: so American dream in the sense of where there's almost
- 24:08Speaker 2: this perseverance of getting it done and look what I've done,
- 24:12Speaker 2: even though if you watch COVID it's I mean, I'm
- 24:16Speaker 2: sure it's not that well done, but he's trying, yeah,
- 24:23Speaker 2: and he's doing everything he can to get this right.
- 24:26Speaker 2: And the whole time, I'm thinking it's literally a thirty
- 24:30Speaker 2: minute it is not a full feature. It is nothing
- 24:35Speaker 2: of the sort.
- 24:36Speaker 1: And there's even a scene in the film where he's
- 24:39Speaker 1: sitting in a car at the airport working on the
- 24:41Speaker 1: script and he says, there's some dialogue in this. I
- 24:46Speaker 1: want to be able to hand the script to people
- 24:48Speaker 1: and not be embarrassed of it. Yeah, And then when
- 24:50Speaker 1: you stop and think, you listen to him explain why
- 24:53Speaker 1: he goes to the airport. It seems like this really
- 24:55Speaker 1: random thing on the surface, but he's essentially talking about
- 24:58Speaker 1: eliminating distract so that he can focus on his work,
- 25:02Speaker 1: which is a really smart idea.
- 25:04Speaker 2: And it is smart. And I think the thing is,
- 25:07Speaker 2: which is what was where the laughs intentional or not
- 25:11Speaker 2: come in, is that it's still not that great. Yeah,
- 25:16Speaker 2: well but it's not for the lack of trying. Yeah,
- 25:20Speaker 2: but you can't help. But like, there's a scene that
- 25:23Speaker 2: we were talking about where he says they're basically making
- 25:27Speaker 2: a mockery of his script, so he goes in show
- 25:32Speaker 2: them and he just screams his lungs out and it
- 25:36Speaker 2: doesn't fit. What's so like, it is clearly not the
- 25:39Speaker 2: right direct like creative choice, but the way he does it.
- 25:43Speaker 2: But here's the thing. He believes in exactly what he's doing,
- 25:49Speaker 2: and you can't you can't really knock the guy for
- 25:54Speaker 2: something for for something where he believes this is like
- 25:58Speaker 2: it's his vision, yeah, and he's not. He's it's it's
- 26:04Speaker 2: it's not wavering from how he feels. This will be
- 26:07Speaker 2: portrayed no matter what you but you may or may
- 26:11Speaker 2: not seem.
- 26:13Speaker 1: I think part of the I don't want to say misunderstanding,
- 26:18Speaker 1: but I think people get caught up in the delivery
- 26:22Speaker 1: of a lot of what he's saying. And it is funny,
- 26:25Speaker 1: like he's a charismatic guy.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Yes, but let's be honest and confident. The look of
- 26:32Speaker 2: these guys like it.
- 26:34Speaker 3: They're not the most But he knows some of it's
- 26:36Speaker 3: funny too. He knows Bill is funny. He knows Mike and.
- 26:41Speaker 2: He's laughing at mine.
- 26:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:42Speaker 2: I mean that's the thing which I'm gonna tell you,
- 26:44Speaker 2: unsung hero is Bill. Bill doesn't give a shit, you
- 26:48Speaker 2: know what he's doing. He doesn't even know why he's
- 26:51Speaker 2: giving him money. Yeah, but the fact, like like towards
- 26:54Speaker 2: the end where he like he gave him the fifty thousand, Like,
- 26:57Speaker 2: there's just there's something about it where he is relying
- 27:01Speaker 2: on these people and even if they don't understand it,
- 27:04Speaker 2: there has to be some kind of faith.
- 27:07Speaker 1: But doesn't it maybe he.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Can get where he needs to go.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Yeah, doesn't doesn't it still say something about Mark that
- 27:16Speaker 1: so many people were willing to acknowledge, like, yeah, something's
- 27:21Speaker 1: off here like this. Yeah, you know, we're probably not
- 27:24Speaker 1: going to go to the oscars anytime soon. But so
- 27:27Speaker 1: many people and believed in him, that they got behind
- 27:32Speaker 1: him Like that to me was something a beautiful as story.
- 27:36Speaker 2: And I don't know his name, but the guy who
- 27:37Speaker 2: was in the movie who had his head shoved in
- 27:39Speaker 2: that cabinet, yeah, I'm just like, yeah, like I feel
- 27:45Speaker 2: like he has he has a family, Like what why.
- 27:48Speaker 1: He's talking about like, I've got set hours, there's a
- 27:52Speaker 1: it's a hard out I need to get out to
- 27:54Speaker 1: so I spend time with my family. But this is
- 27:58Speaker 1: Mark's dream, has passion, and so I give myself a
- 28:01Speaker 1: little wiggle room.
- 28:02Speaker 2: But that's a good scene to show you kind of
- 28:05Speaker 2: where people, yeah, who are involved sort of seem like.
- 28:10Speaker 1: The guy that does like the special effects on it too,
- 28:13Speaker 1: is talking about like oh yeah, he's like yeah, you know,
- 28:16Speaker 1: he's been working on this for like three years now,
- 28:18Speaker 1: but you know he's not slowing down, and I figure
- 28:22Speaker 1: I can give him ten saturdays to help him achieve
- 28:25Speaker 1: his dream. He's talking about how like this movie is
- 28:28Speaker 1: his life is all that he wants to do, and
- 28:33Speaker 1: so he says, you know, I can give him ten
- 28:36Speaker 1: saturdays so that he can achieve his dream. Kind of deal.
- 28:40Speaker 1: But I think like the point I was trying to
- 28:43Speaker 1: make like people get caught up in the funny, the
- 28:46Speaker 1: silly aspects of this movie. And I think they they
- 28:49Speaker 1: let some of the nuggets that Mark actually drops slip by,
- 28:53Speaker 1: like he says some actually really wise stuff. When talking
- 28:57Speaker 1: about wanting to get this film done, he says he
- 29:01Speaker 1: doesn't want to drink and dream, but to create and complete.
- 29:05Speaker 1: It's like acknowledgment, like, hey, I've I can't just piss
- 29:10Speaker 1: this money away and drink all the time, Like I
- 29:12Speaker 1: really want to do something and actually get it done.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Some of his shots were not that bad.
- 29:18Speaker 3: That's my hot take is that I think technically he
- 29:21Speaker 3: can do it. He just doesn't have the resources. He
- 29:23Speaker 3: doesn't have the actors.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Yeah, there are some and I love and I thought
- 29:27Speaker 2: one of the shots it was nice and I think
- 29:28Speaker 2: it is for COVID. But he has all the guys
- 29:30Speaker 2: in the black mask. Yeah, and he's down on the
- 29:33Speaker 2: ground looking up, but he tells him to look menacing,
- 29:37Speaker 2: but you can't see anything black black hoods. So I'm
- 29:41Speaker 2: not sure how that works. But I feel like it's
- 29:44Speaker 2: almost like he's got it in his head but he
- 29:47Speaker 2: can't get it on the screen. Like he's got it
- 29:51Speaker 2: but he just can't because of all the other shit,
- 29:55Speaker 2: and he's in.
- 29:55Speaker 1: It's the money, right, it's.
- 29:57Speaker 2: The and it's the people that even are giving him
- 29:59Speaker 2: the money, right, and the people you're working with, Like
- 30:02Speaker 2: he's not working with fashion, Yeah, he's not really working
- 30:07Speaker 2: with professionals, right, And so I feel like they believe
- 30:13Speaker 2: in him, but you're kinda you know, you kind of
- 30:17Speaker 2: you're getting what you have and you're trying to make
- 30:20Speaker 2: it work. And I think in his head he's very
- 30:23Speaker 2: much more of a communicator and like has the vision.
- 30:28Speaker 2: And I think if someone gave him real money, I
- 30:31Speaker 2: don't think he wasted it. I don't think he'd pissed
- 30:33Speaker 2: it away. But the fact is is that he doesn't.
- 30:35Speaker 2: And so you know, and I also kind of found
- 30:39Speaker 2: it him. Where was a little bit heartbreaking to me
- 30:44Speaker 2: is we're like, you know, he's bringing his kids to
- 30:48Speaker 2: whatever campus he's working on, and you know, the sleeping
- 30:52Speaker 2: bags and stuff, and I don't know, I think there's
- 30:54Speaker 2: parts where I kind of wish we knew more because
- 30:58Speaker 2: I don't. I'm very curure. It's like you see a
- 31:00Speaker 2: brief scene with him and his ex wife or girlfriend
- 31:04Speaker 2: who's had the children with and which, by the way,
- 31:09Speaker 2: I love Mark's girlfriend is a real treat, uh, the
- 31:14Speaker 2: new one. I love her here and I but you
- 31:19Speaker 2: see his ex and I kind of like, I don't know,
- 31:23Speaker 2: you get glimpses of like stuff where it's like, I know,
- 31:27Speaker 2: it's it's not great. Yeah, and the time he is
- 31:31Speaker 2: spending with his kids may not maybe it's not the best,
- 31:36Speaker 2: Like maybe maybe we shouldn't be doing that, and maybe
- 31:39Speaker 2: we should be giving the.
- 31:40Speaker 1: And it kind of goes to what you said earlier
- 31:42Speaker 1: about some things they didn't really explore a lot of because.
- 31:46Speaker 2: I feel like him being a father was very like like,
- 31:51Speaker 2: is there a reason why he doesn't really see him?
- 31:53Speaker 2: I mean, they're there, he doesn't seem like he's in
- 31:56Speaker 2: the best situation. He's living with his parents, and obviously,
- 32:01Speaker 2: and either way, there are things that kind of popped
- 32:05Speaker 2: up that obviously I paid no attention to when I
- 32:07Speaker 2: first saw it when I was a teenager, and and
- 32:10Speaker 2: now I'm kind of like, you know it is. I
- 32:14Speaker 2: think he has sacrificed a lot. And I also feel
- 32:17Speaker 2: like his kids haven't really gotten a great childhood. And
- 32:20Speaker 2: I don't know, I mean, I guess being a parent
- 32:24Speaker 2: and I mean, Brett, you speak to this too, is
- 32:26Speaker 2: that I do feel like the father and stuff isn't there.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Like I feel like the there's a relationship that's very fractured,
- 32:40Speaker 2: but we don't really talk about it.
- 32:44Speaker 3: I think that's fair as far as what his priorities are,
- 32:47Speaker 3: it's clear what his priorities are and the way he's
- 32:50Speaker 3: ordered his life. But I will say, like it was,
- 32:54Speaker 3: I still feel like he's a dad who loves his kids,
- 32:57Speaker 3: who wants to be close to him. Who you know,
- 32:59Speaker 3: there's these like touching moments along the way with them.
- 33:03Speaker 2: Where's where they're filming it, interacting he's telling him to
- 33:06Speaker 2: roll it, and he's like, oh, okay, good job son,
- 33:08Speaker 2: you know. I mean there are there are those moments,
- 33:11Speaker 2: but then there's also some where it's like I don't
- 33:14Speaker 2: really think like they're getting a dad as much as well.
- 33:17Speaker 1: It's for me. It was the scene where he was
- 33:20Speaker 1: sitting on his front porch kind of describing the relationship,
- 33:24Speaker 1: and it was kind of like, like, what's what's the
- 33:28Speaker 1: I'd be curious to hear the other side of the story.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, because I mean we're sitting on his
- 33:33Speaker 2: steps and talking about visit. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I agree,
- 33:36Speaker 2: And it's not so much whether it's his fault or not,
- 33:39Speaker 2: and depending on what his ex wife and everyone is.
- 33:42Speaker 2: But but then as much as you want to be like, okay,
- 33:47Speaker 2: well what like what is that about? But then like,
- 33:52Speaker 2: and I think that's really the beauty of the documentary
- 33:54Speaker 2: is this balance because within that same scene he talks
- 33:58Speaker 2: about how she wants him back, but she's been living
- 34:02Speaker 2: with a man who lives in the house, So why
- 34:04Speaker 2: is that different why he can't be with his girlfriend?
- 34:07Speaker 1: And you're just like, it doesn't make sense.
- 34:09Speaker 2: What town?
- 34:09Speaker 1: Does it make sense?
- 34:10Speaker 2: Did you get here?
- 34:11Speaker 1: Which you know is kind of consistent with people that
- 34:14Speaker 1: oh yes, kind of talk things up a little bit.
- 34:19Speaker 1: It's not right, it's not me, it's you know, it's
- 34:22Speaker 1: and I.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Think that's part of it too, And we kind of
- 34:24Speaker 2: only get one side because again, we do not see
- 34:27Speaker 2: the other side at all, and if we do, it's
- 34:29Speaker 2: briefly where he's basically saying, you, you know, fucking broke
- 34:33Speaker 2: up with me, and that's kind of and the kids
- 34:35Speaker 2: are running around, that's all you really see. But I
- 34:38Speaker 2: agree there, I think there's another part of that.
- 34:41Speaker 1: But for him, we know this is a guy that
- 34:43Speaker 1: is magnetizing to his social circle, persuasive. That's one of
- 34:50Speaker 1: his buddies calls him assertive and aggressive, and he can
- 34:53Speaker 1: convince you of things like there is an element to Mark.
- 34:57Speaker 2: That is the way he sells the ship to build. Yeah,
- 35:01Speaker 2: is a fine example of like are we talking about
- 35:04Speaker 2: the same thing?
- 35:05Speaker 1: You know?
- 35:06Speaker 3: But I will say about Bill and and I feel
- 35:08Speaker 3: like this is kind of to me. This is what
- 35:11Speaker 3: really stood out this time, is like he's a deeply
- 35:14Speaker 3: flawed person. But there's a scene Mark, wait a minute,
- 35:21Speaker 3: we don't know, but there's a scene where he's which
- 35:23Speaker 3: again there's some like really funny lines in there, but
- 35:26Speaker 3: he's helping Bill take a bath, and there's this kind
- 35:29Speaker 3: of reciprocated he's caring for these people. It's not he
- 35:34Speaker 3: is not just money grubbing from Yes, he really cares
- 35:38Speaker 3: about he.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Wants Bill to get drunk and have a good time.
- 35:41Speaker 2: That's very true.
- 35:43Speaker 1: They're having dinner and they like sit Bill down in
- 35:46Speaker 1: with just marking all his friends at the table and
- 35:48Speaker 1: all that, asking me what he wants. He's taking care
- 35:51Speaker 1: of him.
- 35:52Speaker 2: I do think there is real love and affection for them.
- 35:55Speaker 2: And it's not and I think everything I think is
- 35:59Speaker 2: very innocent. I don't think I don't ever think that
- 36:05Speaker 2: Mark is using anybody like I don't think that. And
- 36:10Speaker 2: I think there are scenes like you were describing that
- 36:13Speaker 2: show that he he is caring for these people and
- 36:19Speaker 2: rather Bill gives him whatever and doesn't think he'll get
- 36:22Speaker 2: it or whatever. I don't think in any moment what
- 36:28Speaker 2: Mark is telling Bill that Mark doesn't believe himself. Yes,
- 36:32Speaker 2: and that makes the world a difference.
- 36:35Speaker 1: The authenticity to it absolutely, like you're not just falling
- 36:38Speaker 1: for someone's bullshit.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Right, There is a truthfulness to it all that he
- 36:42Speaker 2: plans to do what he said he's going to do
- 36:45Speaker 2: and complete this and you know, I mean there's that
- 36:48Speaker 2: premiere where he's like, oh, you know, you're gonna get
- 36:50Speaker 2: your money back, and I don't know if anyone believes him,
- 36:53Speaker 2: but the fact but the way he says it, he
- 36:55Speaker 2: believes it. And that's what it.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Was cool that was that was a particularly touching scene
- 37:01Speaker 1: because it was cool to see him get Bill out
- 37:04Speaker 1: of the car and Bill looks he sees the line
- 37:07Speaker 1: of waiting to see this film, and that there was
- 37:10Speaker 1: like that moment. I think his dad was there too,
- 37:16Speaker 1: it's like, man, like all of this work. You know,
- 37:20Speaker 1: people probably look at that and think like, oh, yeah,
- 37:23Speaker 1: it's some shitty theater in Wisconsin, but like that's a
- 37:26Speaker 1: turnout and for this, this project that you've poured so
- 37:30Speaker 1: much of yourself into, to see that kind of line.
- 37:34Speaker 1: I was a little taken aback by it myself. Like
- 37:37Speaker 1: seeing the the shot was like, whoa that is? That
- 37:41Speaker 1: is something that's really cool. And you find yourself watching
- 37:45Speaker 1: this movie and at least at least for me anyways,
- 37:50Speaker 1: growing to root for these guys more and more the
- 37:53Speaker 1: further we get into the film, and then to be
- 37:56Speaker 1: rewarded with that moment was kind of like, I I
- 38:00Speaker 1: don't know, I'm not going to say it was like,
- 38:03Speaker 1: you know, the big payoff or anything like that, but
- 38:05Speaker 1: it was cool to kind of see that all of
- 38:08Speaker 1: this was not just for nothing.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Yep. And I feel like Mike, he adds so much
- 38:16Speaker 2: we have to talk about, yeah, I and I was
- 38:20Speaker 2: it was kind of sad to see that he I
- 38:22Speaker 2: think it was in twenty twenty two, but he had
- 38:25Speaker 2: he had died of cancer. Yeah, but his laugh, Oh,
- 38:32Speaker 2: it's so funny. No matter when Mark whatever, Mark is
- 38:35Speaker 2: telling him and when he goes on where he's like,
- 38:38Speaker 2: I got plenty of like this whole thing about where
- 38:40Speaker 2: he almost died and taking all these drugs and stuff
- 38:43Speaker 2: and it wasn'tways. I got stories like that to keep
- 38:46Speaker 2: you awake all night if you want, Like he I
- 38:49Speaker 2: don't know a more just pure genuine dude. And the
- 38:55Speaker 2: way they's doing it, like when he gets him to
- 38:57Speaker 2: hit that car, it's so I like, he's just.
- 39:02Speaker 3: And their their friendship is really moving too. I mean,
- 39:06Speaker 3: when you get some of the silliness, but you know,
- 39:09Speaker 3: there's uh, there's the scene where he says he's Mike says,
- 39:15Speaker 3: basically he likes working on movies, so I'm here working
- 39:19Speaker 3: on movies with him. And there's a different scene that
- 39:22Speaker 3: I was just thinking about where I feel like Mark
- 39:25Speaker 3: is really in a low place and he's like, Mike
- 39:29Speaker 3: comes over and he's telling one of these crazy stories
- 39:31Speaker 3: and Mark says he came over here and kind of
- 39:36Speaker 3: lifted me up when I needed him, and and that
- 39:38Speaker 3: I mean that seems to kind of again, there's a
- 39:42Speaker 3: lot of brokenness throughout the relationships and stuff and the
- 39:45Speaker 3: people themselves, but it seems like there's a lot of
- 39:48Speaker 3: that aspect as well. Among them, I think.
- 39:50Speaker 2: There's a lot of relying on each other and because
- 39:53Speaker 2: of where they are and where they grew up and
- 39:55Speaker 2: how they grew up. That again, I think you're kind
- 40:00Speaker 2: kind of there's glimpses of it and through his parents
- 40:04Speaker 2: and everything else, but they kind of represent a certain
- 40:08Speaker 2: kind of connection that I again, I think I lose
- 40:14Speaker 2: kind of back to how they grew up and kind
- 40:17Speaker 2: of what they depended on and you know, relied upon.
- 40:19Speaker 2: And but I just love like his laugh and like
- 40:22Speaker 2: sometimes like he would ask him something and he's like,
- 40:24Speaker 2: no it is He's like, no, I don't.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Know, Like does that feel? Does that feel cathartic?
- 40:29Speaker 2: Mike?
- 40:29Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, he's do you know what cathartic means?
- 40:33Speaker 2: And he goes, no, no, It's like but the way
- 40:37Speaker 2: he answer is it's very cathartic. Mark like he like
- 40:40Speaker 2: it's almost like he knew he was on camera. Yeah,
- 40:42Speaker 2: so he didn't quite know how he was going to
- 40:44Speaker 2: say it, but that's how it was.
- 40:46Speaker 1: And that was something I jotted down a tweet that
- 40:51Speaker 1: Mark Duplos of The Morning Show Fame tweeted up, Oh yeah,
- 40:55Speaker 1: hearing the news that Mike had passed a couple of
- 40:57Speaker 1: years ago. Rest in peace, Mike Shank watch him an
- 41:01Speaker 1: American movie and learn how to be a good friend.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Pretty pretty relevant here. I also like when we first
- 41:09Speaker 1: were first getting to know Mike and they ask him
- 41:12Speaker 1: and he's like, well, we used to do a lot
- 41:14Speaker 1: of partying together, but I don't really party anymore, and
- 41:18Speaker 1: then he belts out his signature nervous laugh. Yeah, and
- 41:22Speaker 1: that's that's about it.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Also, Mike had the best scream when they were doing
- 41:29Speaker 3: which was just.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Oh my, the way his face turns.
- 41:34Speaker 3: And the joy over well.
- 41:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and when it's over his smile that is It's
- 41:41Speaker 2: totally nuts. But I love it. There are so many
- 41:44Speaker 2: parts where like once it happened, I remembered the guy
- 41:48Speaker 2: having his head put through.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Well, let's let's get into that. Like the memorable quotes
- 41:54Speaker 1: and scenes and stuff like that, because for me, like
- 41:57Speaker 1: just this this movie like that, those those quotes, those
- 42:02Speaker 1: moments just poured over the top.
- 42:05Speaker 2: I mean, the the master card is the one. I
- 42:08Speaker 2: mean a quote to this day.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Kick fucking ass. I got a master card.
- 42:11Speaker 2: And he's like, oh, that's funny. I just had to
- 42:13Speaker 2: borrow money from my mom for gas today, like the
- 42:16Speaker 2: way that it goes in line to like pure joy
- 42:22Speaker 2: that he's got that he has got it.
- 42:24Speaker 1: And then an hour later he says, yeah, it's him
- 42:27Speaker 1: saying I owe five hundred dollars to master Card.
- 42:30Speaker 2: But like when they take Bill to the bank and
- 42:34Speaker 2: like it takes like him, his dad and Bill, he's like,
- 42:37Speaker 2: it's like no, like you have to sign it and
- 42:39Speaker 2: get out, like you know, if you want it drawn out,
- 42:42Speaker 2: you have to put it. And really, Bill is a
- 42:45Speaker 2: Debbie Donor. Let's be honest. He doesn't have anything out,
- 42:48Speaker 2: you know, he's not. He's like, that's what you keep saying.
- 42:51Speaker 2: But you know, but then when he is and I
- 42:56Speaker 2: think this is in your letterbox with you. But the
- 42:59Speaker 2: but because Jesus told when he tries to do that
- 43:02Speaker 2: line over and over and then he actually got it
- 43:05Speaker 2: on like the third tape. But somebody was it, Mike,
- 43:10Speaker 2: I wasn't doing something.
- 43:12Speaker 3: Mark says, couldn't ask, couldn't ask for anything better. I
- 43:14Speaker 3: think it was recorded too loud.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what it was. And so by the time
- 43:20Speaker 2: they're like take thirty one and that man can't I mean,
- 43:24Speaker 2: he can't do anything else, and I like, I was like,
- 43:27Speaker 2: I'm done.
- 43:28Speaker 1: He finally just says like I'm done, Hans THEO.
- 43:33Speaker 2: But I couldn't help but laugh because he kept saying
- 43:35Speaker 2: those same two things and then he goes h like
- 43:39Speaker 2: like he could not get past it. And then when
- 43:41Speaker 2: he nailed it, Mark's like, okay that I couldn't ask
- 43:44Speaker 2: for anything better. I think we recorded it to like
- 43:49Speaker 2: but Bill wasn't really having it. But then it's like, yeah,
- 43:52Speaker 2: I mean, I like, I kind of forgot how it ended,
- 43:56Speaker 2: and I do. And I did enjoy that they ended
- 44:00Speaker 2: with Bill talking to because I felt like that relationship
- 44:06Speaker 2: was a pivotal one in the documentary for not just
- 44:10Speaker 2: the money, but just like you said, relationship, And I
- 44:14Speaker 2: think you kind of got that those intimate scenes of
- 44:17Speaker 2: Mark is like, he's very much a part of Bill's life.
- 44:21Speaker 2: And is it his mom's father or his dad's dad.
- 44:26Speaker 2: I just noticed that they never saw them together, but
- 44:28Speaker 2: Mark was always with Bill.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Well, they talk about parents not having a great relationship, Okay, yeah,
- 44:37Speaker 1: the mom and dad. I don't think we're ever together.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Okay, And so I I really liked that they ended
- 44:47Speaker 2: with him saying what he says, And I thought that
- 44:50Speaker 2: was the well touch because I didn't remember that.
- 44:52Speaker 3: It's one of those things that they you know, all
- 44:55Speaker 3: through the movie, what Bill was saying is, you're not
- 44:58Speaker 3: going to do this this stuff, You're whatever. You keep
- 45:02Speaker 3: telling me this.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Well, and he gives them stuff. It's in like a
- 45:04Speaker 2: pile of shit that no one can find, and he
- 45:06Speaker 2: does obviously he doesn't care.
- 45:08Speaker 3: But at the end of his life he leaves him
- 45:11Speaker 3: the money exactly. And and I think we all know
- 45:14Speaker 3: those people who like give you a hard time, and
- 45:17Speaker 3: but he does believe in him.
- 45:18Speaker 2: He's supporting him in his own way. And even just
- 45:22Speaker 2: to sit there and do thirty takes in that car
- 45:24Speaker 2: to say that thing is his dedication.
- 45:27Speaker 1: It struck me as like that person in Mark's life
- 45:33Speaker 1: that's like, I'm just not going to kiss your ass,
- 45:37Speaker 1: and like you need somebody to kind of clamp down
- 45:40Speaker 1: on you a little bit and hard on and it
- 45:43Speaker 1: kind of focus a little bit.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know his parents are kind of like, well,
- 45:47Speaker 2: you know, he always liked it, and well, I hope
- 45:49Speaker 2: it works out. I don't think it'll work.
- 45:50Speaker 1: You know.
- 45:51Speaker 2: It's almost like they're honest with the camera. But I'm
- 45:52Speaker 2: not sure if if Mark is being told that, and
- 45:55Speaker 2: I don't think Mark would listen anyway. I think that's
- 45:57Speaker 2: just not who he is. But but in like the
- 46:00Speaker 2: flip side of it, is like one of his brothers,
- 46:02Speaker 2: like I mean, I thought, like you would be a
- 46:04Speaker 2: serial kill, Like they're legit thinking this man is going
- 46:08Speaker 2: to go on a killing spree.
- 46:10Speaker 3: Honestly, those of the moments that are most that were
- 46:14Speaker 3: most unbelievable to me. It's like, are you really are
- 46:19Speaker 3: you just playing this up for you know this this movie,
- 46:23Speaker 3: or is that really what you? I mean it It
- 46:26Speaker 3: did seem clear, whether it was a bit or not,
- 46:29Speaker 3: that there was some distance with him and his brothers.
- 46:31Speaker 1: For sure, maybe all.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Of them I was gonna say, yeah, I don't really.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Even the ones that that weren't harsh to him was
- 46:40Speaker 1: still like yeah.
- 46:40Speaker 2: And again, those are the aspects where it's like something's
- 46:45Speaker 2: not you know, something's not right, like family dynamic wise,
- 46:50Speaker 2: and and and maybe that's a whole I mean, maybe
- 46:52Speaker 2: that's a whole other ow are you okay my teeth?
- 46:58Speaker 2: That's a whole nother story, a whole other dynamic to explore.
- 47:01Speaker 2: But but yeah, I mean you could clearly kind of
- 47:05Speaker 2: see where they kind of let him do what he wanted,
- 47:09Speaker 2: but no one really had much faith. And I feel
- 47:11Speaker 2: like Bill was the only one who, like, you're right,
- 47:14Speaker 2: like kind of gave him ship, but did give him
- 47:16Speaker 2: the opportunity, yeah, create something with what he had, which
- 47:22Speaker 2: there's one scene where Bill's just like, well, they tell
- 47:24Speaker 2: me I have like two hundred and something thousand dollars
- 47:27Speaker 2: and they're like, oh, OK, like but I don't know
- 47:30Speaker 2: what that was, and you kind of get a you
- 47:33Speaker 2: kind of get a I think it's his dad that
- 47:35Speaker 2: says like, you know, he was a scholar and a professor,
- 47:37Speaker 2: like you know, he was this guy. So I don't know.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Parts of it just feels like you can hold someone
- 47:45Speaker 2: up for something, and then you kind of see him
- 47:48Speaker 2: as as this old frail man. And then you have
- 47:52Speaker 2: Mark's fears of you know, am I gonna do an
- 47:54Speaker 2: office job or am I gonna work at the cemetery forever?
- 47:57Speaker 2: Like I don't. I think there's connections you.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Can around the kitchen like his mother.
- 48:02Speaker 2: Yeah right, yeah, I love where he was. I want
- 48:05Speaker 2: to like a kitchen. Yeah, I know, mom. But like
- 48:07Speaker 2: when he is screaming about on the Super Bowl, I
- 48:13Speaker 2: think it's when Brett farther than won right, and he's
- 48:17Speaker 2: like screamings like I mean if you mforts and all
- 48:21Speaker 2: this stuff, and s alreaty concerned about his drinking, and
- 48:24Speaker 2: of course I love her. Mike's just kind of like
- 48:26Speaker 2: sitting there where just watching watch a TV. But then
- 48:29Speaker 2: I love her. All that happens, storms out and everything,
- 48:31Speaker 2: and like, oh it'll be fun. And his mom just
- 48:33Speaker 2: goes the packer.
- 48:38Speaker 3: Yeah, we we hit on this earlier. But the thing
- 48:43Speaker 3: that stood out to me, I mean I haven't seen
- 48:45Speaker 3: this probably since we were high school early college. Yeah,
- 48:49Speaker 3: you mean both, and you know we said this, but
- 48:53Speaker 3: when you're that age, it's kind of like, look at
- 48:56Speaker 3: this loser who can't make a movie. Yeah, as an
- 48:59Speaker 3: all almost forty year old, my perspective was, this dude's
- 49:04Speaker 3: going for it. Like a time in a time when
- 49:09Speaker 3: I know so many people and I know so many
- 49:11Speaker 3: ways that I personally have kind of just packed it
- 49:15Speaker 3: in and said it's not worth giving the effort for
- 49:18Speaker 3: whatever X is. It really is inspiring to see somebody
- 49:23Speaker 3: just really pushing I think that.
- 49:25Speaker 2: I think that's the main thing is that in its
- 49:28Speaker 2: own weird, twisted way, it's inspirational because of what he
- 49:36Speaker 2: is trying to do when everything and everybody says, nah,
- 49:42Speaker 2: there's no way. And I think that's the one thing,
- 49:47Speaker 2: like you were saying, that sticks out because there are
- 49:50Speaker 2: so many things that really are against him and not
- 49:54Speaker 2: just where he's from, but who he is, and like
- 49:56Speaker 2: you said, the resources and stuff, but there's that love
- 49:59Speaker 2: of and he tells you like kind of you know,
- 50:02Speaker 2: Romero and stuff like that that he likes and text
- 50:05Speaker 2: change on him and it's like, oh, you know what
- 50:09Speaker 2: everybody had, Like he's no different than everyone else who
- 50:12Speaker 2: has this stream. The question is how far are you
- 50:16Speaker 2: willing to go? And no matter how many people may
- 50:19Speaker 2: think it's impossible, but then he finds and granted it's
- 50:23Speaker 2: an electric, eclectic group of people, but they they believe
- 50:28Speaker 2: in him in some form or fashion that clearly has
- 50:31Speaker 2: him going to try and make it. And even though
- 50:36Speaker 2: the documentary is about doing Northwestern ends up being a
- 50:39Speaker 2: short film because of budget stuff. But you know, I
- 50:42Speaker 2: mean and I I mean, I I think I found
- 50:46Speaker 2: a new appreciation in respect for what the movie is
- 50:50Speaker 2: is is trying to reveal, but also just like the
- 50:56Speaker 2: guy you're following, like he's not this big joke. You
- 51:01Speaker 2: could take from it depending on where you are in life,
- 51:05Speaker 2: and I think that's important.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Yep, did you guys catch that Mike actually did the
- 51:10Speaker 1: music for this.
- 51:11Speaker 2: That was one of the first things that popped up.
- 51:12Speaker 2: I saw that.
- 51:13Speaker 1: That was pretty cool. Yeah. Also talking about memorable quotes
- 51:17Speaker 1: and scenes, there was Mark with the whiteboard.
- 51:22Speaker 3: Oh, sorry for erasing.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like I saw this fuck that goes sorry,
- 51:29Speaker 1: I'm sorry for racing, and then it goes right back
- 51:31Speaker 1: to this ranting about whatever. That was a good one.
- 51:35Speaker 3: His story in the cemetery about having to clean.
- 51:38Speaker 1: Up I've got that down too. Yeah, it was a
- 51:42Speaker 1: really profound moment because I was thinking, I'm thirty years
- 51:45Speaker 1: old and in ten to fifteen seconds, I'm going to
- 51:48Speaker 1: start cleaning up somebody's shit.
- 51:51Speaker 2: You know what I liked, which I mean it's funny,
- 51:54Speaker 2: but it's also like, oh, you know what you kind
- 51:56Speaker 2: of see like his dedication is in one of the
- 52:01Speaker 2: first production meetings. I think it's actually for Northwestern what
- 52:04Speaker 2: he set out to do. It's like, okay, open up
- 52:08Speaker 2: beautiful black and white. And when I do this with
- 52:11Speaker 2: his hands about the camber, He's like, that means I've
- 52:13Speaker 2: already seen it. I got a vision for and and
- 52:15Speaker 2: and other people's reactions. They have no clue what he's
- 52:22Speaker 2: talking about, so you already could deal. Like he's serious,
- 52:25Speaker 2: like he has it here in his head, but everyone
- 52:29Speaker 2: else done. And he's like like everyone's looking at huh
- 52:32Speaker 2: and like like you clearly he's already working. Like they
- 52:37Speaker 2: don't get it.
- 52:38Speaker 1: I I really liked the scene to where they're talking
- 52:41Speaker 1: to Bill and Bill's like, I haven't even had my
- 52:44Speaker 1: dinner yet, and so yeah, Mark's like, Mike, get him,
- 52:48Speaker 1: get him something to eat, and he pulls out a sausage. Oh,
- 52:51Speaker 1: a sausage from a bag. And then Bill, oh, that's
- 52:59Speaker 1: the good stuff.
- 53:00Speaker 2: That's what Mike's mom brought them for lunch. He said, oh,
- 53:04Speaker 2: they she brought. She got us some sausages. But when
- 53:07Speaker 2: Bill talks about and then he hands them a sergey.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Bill takes the sausage and then he goes, well, but
- 53:13Speaker 1: I don't have anything to drink with it, and Mark goes, Mike,
- 53:17Speaker 1: get him a soda, get the Surge, and then Mike
- 53:22Speaker 1: proceeds to tell him like that Surge, it's a new
- 53:25Speaker 1: soda from Coca colast they gave that man, right, they
- 53:30Speaker 1: just handed ca Yeah, the pure sugar and pure.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Sugar, I don't think.
- 53:38Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a great relic of nineteen ninety nine.
- 53:41Speaker 2: It is. And even like was it Thanksgiving or something
- 53:45Speaker 2: where basically Bill was drinking and he was giving him
- 53:48Speaker 2: They love that. What is it?
- 53:49Speaker 1: Pepper?
- 53:50Speaker 2: They love it? Which was he took a sip.
- 53:52Speaker 1: It was like, if I'm not mistaken, don Vito's drink
- 53:56Speaker 1: of choice is one thing peach peach snops for dunbee do.
- 54:00Speaker 1: I can't recall. I can't remember. It might have been
- 54:03Speaker 1: the girl friend, No, maybe not. Somebody said that Mark
- 54:07Speaker 1: was indomitable, and I thought that was a really great
- 54:09Speaker 1: adjective to describe him, like come hell or high water,
- 54:13Speaker 1: like I'm doing this, I'm I'm getting this done. Do
- 54:18Speaker 1: we want to talk a little more depth about the
- 54:20Speaker 1: cabinet scene. We keep mentioning it over and over. I
- 54:23Speaker 1: just I just they score the wood thinking that it's
- 54:27Speaker 1: just gonna break.
- 54:29Speaker 2: And it gets where Mark is punching it.
- 54:32Speaker 1: Oh yeah, bloody, bloody, bloody knuckles and he's like, oh yeah,
- 54:37Speaker 1: I'm sorry, man, I'm sorry. Tried to put your head
- 54:40Speaker 1: through that, no wonder.
- 54:42Speaker 2: And that guy I I honestly, it would not It
- 54:46Speaker 2: would not be as memorable if it wasn't for the
- 54:48Speaker 2: guy it's being done to.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Looks so put together.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Yeah, because like he's talking throughout the whole documentary. Yeah,
- 54:57Speaker 2: and like trying to fight with him because he's also
- 55:02Speaker 2: this satanic leader guy, I guess, and they're fighting, but
- 55:07Speaker 2: the way his head just bounces. And what I appreciate
- 55:11Speaker 2: is Mark does it like three times until he says
- 55:14Speaker 2: cut and what I and what? And another part is
- 55:18Speaker 2: I like cause it's it's it's edited. Within the same
- 55:21Speaker 2: scene is when Mark gets his mother to film and
- 55:25Speaker 2: he's doing a heavy breathing thing. She's like, okay, all right,
- 55:28Speaker 2: now you're was I not in the middle before? Well
- 55:31Speaker 2: I used to, and like you could tell him. It's like,
- 55:34Speaker 2: oh okay, he says.
- 55:36Speaker 3: Ma, where am I at as all this film is burning?
- 55:39Speaker 2: Yeah, Like she doesn't know, and he gives up. But yeah,
- 55:44Speaker 2: I love.
- 55:46Speaker 3: To the credit of that scene. I think they used
- 55:49Speaker 3: the first version in the film and a couple of
- 55:52Speaker 3: those shots.
- 55:54Speaker 2: All right, But yeah, I don't know that guy's name,
- 55:56Speaker 2: but but he just seems like he no business being
- 56:01Speaker 2: a part of it. I respect that he was but
- 56:04Speaker 2: the fact that they were trying to ram his head
- 56:06Speaker 2: in there over and over, and there's a part where
- 56:09Speaker 2: he's laying on the kitchen. I think it's after the
- 56:11Speaker 2: first or second attempt, and like his face is red,
- 56:16Speaker 2: Like clearly this is not he has I mean that.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Well ninety seven when they were filming.
- 56:24Speaker 2: This, yeah, I just I mean, how can you not
- 56:28Speaker 2: watch that and think this? I mean it was a
- 56:31Speaker 2: sad side for all involved.
- 56:35Speaker 1: Oh man, I was just about to bring something up
- 56:37Speaker 1: of the pronunciation of covin when they have that conversation.
- 56:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it was like says something about how you pronounce it,
- 56:45Speaker 1: and Mark's like, well, how else would you pronounce it?
- 56:48Speaker 1: He's like, well the traditional ye. No, Mark's like, no,
- 56:53Speaker 1: we're it's covin COVID.
- 56:57Speaker 2: But Ageain he's so bod I mean he believes and
- 57:00Speaker 2: the ship he's doing, it's like do you really argue
- 57:03Speaker 2: with the man? I mean, do you're just you know?
- 57:05Speaker 2: But I love the the poster that they made and
- 57:10Speaker 2: they that.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Like he gets he gets Mike to hand out the flyers,
- 57:15Speaker 1: but like Mike starts walking without the fly, without the fly.
- 57:22Speaker 2: Where you go? I was going to pass the flyers,
- 57:24Speaker 2: but you don't have the flyers' you are so out
- 57:29Speaker 2: of it.
- 57:30Speaker 1: It's so good.
- 57:31Speaker 2: He's like you, He's like, I trust you to put
- 57:33Speaker 2: them in like important places because we only have this
- 57:36Speaker 2: many left. And it's him and who's the who's the
- 57:38Speaker 2: other guy? Producer is something that.
- 57:41Speaker 3: Has a really unique smile. Yeah, he just always looks
- 57:45Speaker 3: happy to be there.
- 57:46Speaker 2: He's like they're both walking and you're like and I
- 57:49Speaker 2: think that's part of the fine and part of the
- 57:52Speaker 2: comedy is like you really wouldn't trust these guys with
- 57:56Speaker 2: like your business or your art or your film. But
- 58:00Speaker 2: that's I mean, that's that's all they have, and that's
- 58:05Speaker 2: that's the that's the that's the bulk of it that
- 58:10Speaker 2: I think you kind of strip it down and like
- 58:12Speaker 2: that's all each other have, and you know, and it
- 58:15Speaker 2: it's it's quite significant when you kind of see what
- 58:20Speaker 2: they're having to do and you know the lays and
- 58:23Speaker 2: the money and everything else, and like you know a
- 58:25Speaker 2: lot of the I mean, they pick up one of
- 58:27Speaker 2: the guys from jail and they go to the edit lab,
- 58:33Speaker 2: so I mean, it's it's just it's it's utterly fascinating
- 58:38Speaker 2: to watch at this age and you and it's weird
- 58:43Speaker 2: because you're right, you feel inspired, you also feel sad.
- 58:48Speaker 2: It's like it's heartfelt, it's heartbreaking, and I mean it's
- 58:55Speaker 2: an hour and a half maybe, yeah, so it's just
- 58:58Speaker 2: these pieces but and and it really just because I mean,
- 59:01Speaker 2: there was a point where it's like it was summer,
- 59:03Speaker 2: then it was fall, that it was winter, and like,
- 59:05Speaker 2: you know, you can kind of tell that there were
- 59:09Speaker 2: I think sometimes where there wasn't really anything happening. And
- 59:13Speaker 2: I think that's kind of like where they show the
- 59:14Speaker 2: Super Bowl where he is kind of falling apart, because
- 59:17Speaker 2: I think there is kind of this realization of like, shit,
- 59:20Speaker 2: you know what, because you know, they show him doing
- 59:22Speaker 2: these shorts and stuff when they was young and thought
- 59:24Speaker 2: you know, and now, I mean, you know, which sounds
- 59:26Speaker 2: crazy to mean to think, but you know, now he's
- 59:29Speaker 2: thirty and he hasn't done anything, and you know, what's
- 59:32Speaker 2: you know, what does he have to offer? Now?
- 59:36Speaker 3: We keep touching on it, but there's a line in
- 59:39Speaker 3: a film that's very much in conversation this movie maybe
- 59:42Speaker 3: inspired by La La Land, Yeah, sure, where it makes
- 59:47Speaker 3: sense where Emma Stone's character says to Ryan Gosling about
- 59:51Speaker 3: jazz music, Like people are interested in things that people
- 59:54Speaker 3: are passionate about. And I mean that's it in this movie,
- 59:58Speaker 3: Like that's why that line's there, that that's why these
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: people do this, is they they want I mean again,
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: we were twenty eighteen whatever the first time we saw this,
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: and so you're like, oh, look at this old thirty
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: year old. But but as a thirty year old, you say,
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: I don't have the passion this dude has. But I
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: see that he has it. And so I'm gonna, like
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: a lot of them say throughout the movie, guy, I'm
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: just gonna be here with him kind of along the road.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Yeah, well, they're following him into the great unknown, because
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: I mean there is I mean, there's nothing guaranteed, and
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: with everything that's going on with where he's from, and
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: you know the resources he has, if we've mentioned several times,
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: I mean, that's all you really have is you got
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: you know, you're you're gonna you're gonna follow this guy
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: into into battle now rather you want to follow him
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: into battle as a different story. But for for quite
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: a few that's what they decided to do. I could
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: not help but laugh. And I don't think it was
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: I don't think it was intentional, but that like actor
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: actor guy. Yeah, I could not help but think he's
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: the only one who just seems like an ass and
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: the way that he is thinking this is gonna go,
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: or also the material that he's in, like I don't
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: know he like when he has that thing about his
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: costume and Mark's having to talk to me comes back,
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, I'm like, is that, like, does this
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: guy really think this is necessary? Like that kind of
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: seemed like someone like that, Like everyone else kind of
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: this is how I saw it. Everyone else kind of
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: realizes what they're in and Mark has the vision, which
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: being the filmmaker and right, like I get it. I
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: don't know if Rob really needs to have this kind
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: of arrogance about anything. And then he reminded me of
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: that wrestling manager and I can't, I can't get my
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: mind off.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: That seems like a great spot to end this show on. Yeah,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: I've gotten through all of my notes for those wondering
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: Mark has to this day, He's fifty eight years old,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: thirty acting credits to his name.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: Well, him and Mike did a few things together before
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: he passed, and Mark is still and Marks and he's
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: directing something, isn't he he? It's not Northwestern In case
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: anyone knows, I looked this up.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: He never North Swestern is still listed as in production.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so there you go.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: No, he did a documentary about a UFO festival in
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: Wisconsin that made it to Fantastic Fest.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Okay, oh good?
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: So does and COVID to this day are the only
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: films that he has actually finished. But talking about a
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: guy that, I mean, he's got some purposes, made it,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: by his standards, a career in film.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: Doesn't he have an acting credit in the one with
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: Jet Lee?
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: Does he?
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: I think I saw that, which I was like, is
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: this an error in the listing?
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: Yeah? He does, he does have any.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: I mean, I've never seen the one. I kind of
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: want to watch the one just for him.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: I have seen it, but I didn't have no idea
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: he was in it.
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: I mean, it's got to be a very minor role.
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: But I still like, how did he get that?
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: Good for him?
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: I'm going to say American movie, Yeah, good for him.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: He's also in Cabin Fever two.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: He I think he fits, he fits in that. But yeah,
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: I was looking up. I was looking up some stuff.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: While I was actually watching it at times because I'm like,
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: what what did he do? And did he ever finish this?
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: And I mean he kind of pops up. I mean,
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: I don't quality, I have had no idea, but but
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: he finished. His name is in quite a few things,
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: so I mean, and I would imagine watching this documentary.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: I bet you he's he's living the dream.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Good for Mark, Good for Mark, Good for Mark.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: I loved the American movie. I bought the Blu ray.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: I don't know if it's still for sale, but when
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I bought it, it was fifteen bucks on Amazon.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: Yeah, So which how many people did he say he
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: needed to spend fifteen dollars to fund?
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: Oh there's over three thousand, Yeah, thirty four hundred maybe.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: So I'm I'm part of that. Yeah, part of that.
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: Yeah, just production.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: I need about thirty four hundred more people like Mike.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: And I thought, buddy, you ain't ever gonna find someone
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: like Mike.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Nope, Nope, sure won't. That's going to do it for us.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: In our March twenty twenty six episode of the movie
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: Review Rewind podcast for Brandon and Brett, I'm stony and
