Transcript
- 0:00Most people don't struggle because they're weak.
- 0:02They struggle because they're alone.
- 0:05Not physically alone necessarily, but relationally
- 0:09alone. They have people in their life,
- 0:12they have conversations, they have friendships, they have a
- 0:15community in the general sense. But when it comes to what's
- 0:19really going on inside them, when it comes to the things that
- 0:22they're actually carrying, when it comes to the battles that
- 0:26they're quietly fighting, they're all alone.
- 0:29And here's the truth. Service level connection will
- 0:33never produce deep level freedom.
- 0:36You can be surrounded by people and still feel completely
- 0:39isolated. You can have friendships and
- 0:43still not be known. You can show up week after week
- 0:48and still be carrying everything by yourself because not all
- 0:52relationships are built the same.
- 0:54And today we're going to talk about the kind of relationships
- 0:58that actually change your life. The kind that breaks isolation,
- 1:03the kind that creates strength, the kind that leads to freedom.
- 1:09Today we're talking about the power of brotherhood.
- 1:18Welcome to Unmasked, where we take off the filters and get
- 1:21real about faith, failure, and finding freedom.
- 1:24I'm your host, Wesley Farnsworth, and this episode is
- 1:28episode 3 of our miniseries Breaking Free.
- 1:32In episode 1, we talked about the lie of self-reliance.
- 1:36In episode 2, we talked about the cost of isolation, and today
- 1:41we're talking about what comes next.
- 1:42Because stepping out of isolation is one thing, but
- 1:45building the right relationships, that is where the
- 1:48real change begins. So today we're talking about
- 1:51brotherhood, not casual friendships and not service
- 1:55level connection, but the kind of relationship that actually
- 1:59strengthens you, sharpens you, and helps you to live
- 2:03differently. So pull up a chair, take a deep
- 2:05breath, and let's jump in. This is unmasked.
- 2:15Most people never experience relationships like this because
- 2:19here's the reality. They have friends.
- 2:22They have people that they laugh with, that they spend time with,
- 2:26that they talk about life in general with, but they don't
- 2:30have people who truly know them. They don't have people who see
- 2:34past the surface. They don't have people who are
- 2:37close enough to challenge them. And part of the reason is
- 2:41because this kind of relationships requires something
- 2:45that most people avoid. And that, my friends, is
- 2:50vulnerability. You see, real brotherhood
- 2:52doesn't happen accidentally. It doesn't happen through
- 2:55proximity alone either. It happens through honesty.
- 3:00And honesty is uncomfortable because honesty requires you to
- 3:05let people see what's actually going on.
- 3:08Not the polished version, not the edited version, the real
- 3:12version. And that is why most people
- 3:15hesitate, because they have a fear of being known.
- 3:19It feels risky because once someone knows you, you lose
- 3:24control. You can't manage the narrative
- 3:27anymore. You can't present the version of
- 3:29yourself that feels the safest. You are exposed and that
- 3:34exposure brings fear. I can speak to that first hand.
- 3:39And with that fear comes many different thoughts.
- 3:42You begin to think things like what if they see me differently?
- 3:46What if they lose respect for me?
- 3:49What if they don't understand? What if they pull away?
- 3:53Those questions are ones that keep people stuck in surface
- 3:57level relationships. They keep conversations safe,
- 4:02they keep struggles hidden, and as a result, they keep people
- 4:06isolated even in the middle of a community.
- 4:09Now here's something that I want you to understand.
- 4:12There is a difference though between friendship and
- 4:15brotherhood because not all relationships are built to carry
- 4:19weight. Friendship is good and
- 4:21friendship is important. I'm not saying it's not, but
- 4:25brotherhood is different. Friendship is built on shared
- 4:28interests. Brotherhood is built on shared
- 4:31honesty. Friendship is where you connect.
- 4:34Brotherhood is where you grow. Friendship is where you enjoy
- 4:37life. Brotherhood is where you face
- 4:40life. In brotherhood, you don't just
- 4:42talk about what's easy, you talk about what's real.
- 4:45You don't just encourage each other, you challenge each other.
- 4:50You don't just show up when it's convenient, you show up when
- 4:53it's necessary. That kind of relationship is
- 4:56rare, but when you find it, it is powerful.
- 5:01When you have the right person in your life, everything shifts.
- 5:04You begin to think clearer, you see things differently.
- 5:08You don't stay stuck in your own head because there's somebody
- 5:12else speaking truth into your life.
- 5:15Galatians 62 says to carry each other's burdens.
- 5:19That only happens when people actually know what you're
- 5:22carrying. And when they do, something
- 5:24changes. The weight is no longer yours
- 5:27alone. You are no longer trying to
- 5:30figure everything out by yourself.
- 5:32You are no longer isolated. You're supported, you're
- 5:36challenged. You're reminded of truth when
- 5:40your thinking starts to drift, and that changes the direction
- 5:45of your life. See, one of the most important,
- 5:48and I think probably most overlooked parts of brotherhood
- 5:53is accountability. Not control or judgment, but
- 5:56accountability. The accountability isn't someone
- 6:00telling you what to do. It's someone close enough to
- 6:03your life to notice when you're not doing what you said you
- 6:07would do. It's someone willing to ask you
- 6:09the hard questions, someone willing to speak truth to you
- 6:14even when it's uncomfortable, and most importantly, someone
- 6:17who cares more about your growth than your comfort.
- 6:22That kind of accountability protects you because left on
- 6:26your own, it's very easy to drift.
- 6:29It's easy to justify things, it's easy to fall back into
- 6:34patterns. But when somebody is walking
- 6:37with you and you have that accountability, that drift gets
- 6:42interrupted and the interruption creates change.
- 6:46So why do people avoid it? It's a question a lot of people
- 6:49ask, so let's talk about it. You see, even in brotherhood,
- 6:53there's challenges. Brotherhood is powerful, but
- 6:57people still avoid it because they don't like the
- 7:00accountability. It requires effort, it requires
- 7:04intention, it requires vulnerability.
- 7:07And men, let's admit it, most of us, we don't like vulnerability
- 7:13even with ourselves, because we have to open up.
- 7:16We have to be honest. We have to risk being seen.
- 7:21And for people who have been hurt before, that is not easy.
- 7:25It's easier to just stay at the surface.
- 7:28It's easier to keep things light.
- 7:31It's easier to avoid discomfort. To avoid discomfort also means
- 7:38avoiding growth. And over time, that choice keeps
- 7:44you stuck. It's important that you build
- 7:46the right relationships. Because brotherhood doesn't just
- 7:50happen. You have to build it, and that
- 7:53starts with choosing the right people.
- 7:56Not just people who are fun to be around, but people who are
- 7:59willing to be honest with you. People who have growth and value
- 8:04growth. People who are pursuing
- 8:06something deeper than just comfort.
- 8:08And once those people are in your life, you have to go first.
- 8:13You have to be the one that opens up, the one who takes the
- 8:17risk, the one who sets the tone, because honesty creates honesty
- 8:23and vulnerability creates connection.
- 8:26So what does this look like practically?
- 8:28This does not have to be something that's complicated.
- 8:31It might look like meeting regularly with one or two
- 8:34people. It might look like having real
- 8:36conversations instead of surface level ones.
- 8:39It might look like asking better questions.
- 8:42How are you really doing? What's been weighing on you?
- 8:46What are you struggling with right now?
- 8:48And then being willing to answer those same questions in return.
- 8:53Honestly. See, that's where brotherhood
- 8:55starts. Not with a program, not with a
- 8:58plan, but with honesty. So let me ask you something.
- 9:02Do you have people in your life who really know you?
- 9:05Not just your schedule, not just your surface level life, but
- 9:09what's actually going on inside of you?
- 9:13And if not, what's holding you back?
- 9:16Is it fear? Is it a past hurt?
- 9:18Is it the belief that you should be able to handle things on your
- 9:21own? If it is, I want you to think
- 9:24about that for a moment. Because if you want freedom, you
- 9:28have to push past those fears and realize that you can't do it
- 9:34alone. Next time on Unmasked, we're
- 9:36going to be closing out the series by talking about building
- 9:39a life of freedom. Because freedom is not a one
- 9:43time commitment. It's something that you build,
- 9:47something that you protect, something that you live in
- 9:50daily. If this episode challenged you
- 9:53or somebody came to mind while you were listening to it, do me
- 9:56a favor. Share it with somebody.
- 9:59Share it with that person. Because you never know whose
- 10:02healing might begin with just a simple share.
- 10:05And remember this, the right people in your life don't just
- 10:09support you, they strengthen you.
- 10:12And freedom grows where honesty and brotherhood exist because
- 10:16you're choosing to live unmasked.
- 10:19God bless you.
