- 0:00What's part of your EDC, your everyday carry?
- 0:03Something you would never leave the house without. You can't imagine a policeman going
- 0:07to work without a badge. You can't imagine a
- 0:12doctor going to work without his stethoscope.
- 0:15And I, as a recovering academic, can't imagine going
- 0:19anywhere without my red pen.
- 0:22This is my proofreading pen. Now, when students would
- 0:26bring me essays before they were due, this was the great
- 0:30instrument of mercy. This was an opportunity for the
- 0:34Good Shepherd to lead the straying sheep into the service of truth,
- 0:38beauty, and goodness. But after an
- 0:42essay was due for a grade and it had not first been shepherded
- 0:47by the instrument of mercy, the red pen, the proofreading
- 0:51pen, then the red pen became an instrument
- 0:55of divine justice, the terrible swift
- 0:59sword. Now, it's true, Karl Popper said
- 1:03that it is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood.
- 1:08But I think we can get really close if we
- 1:12try. And you know who should try really hard to
- 1:16not say anything that lends itself to misunderstanding?
- 1:19Important people, people who are members of the
- 1:22People Who Should Really Know Better Club, including senior Catholic
- 1:27cadres of the People Who Should Really Know Better Club.
- 1:31What am I talking about? Stay with me, I got a story to tell.
- 1:34I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTeague, your host every day of the Catholic Current,
- 1:37coming to you from the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network. Let's take
- 1:40a closer look. Glad you're here.
- 1:44Recently, someone who might fairly be identified as
- 1:47a member of the People Who Should Really Know Better Club, was talking
- 1:51to a group of very devout people whose
- 1:55primary work in life is to adore our Eucharistic Lord
- 1:59in the Blessed Sacrament. And speaking of
- 2:04that act of devotion, referred to our Eucharistic Lord
- 2:08as, and here I quote, the continuous and silent
- 2:11adoration of a God who has become bread.
- 2:15As soon as I heard that, the red pen
- 2:20was in my hand, because sometimes it's not enough
- 2:24to proofread the language. You've got to proofread
- 2:28the theology. Now, I understand people who are very important,
- 2:32more important than me, people who are very busy, more busy
- 2:35than me, and people who really have a
- 2:39whole lot on their plate very often they have opportunities for regular
- 2:44proofreaders and maybe even theological proofreaders too.
- 2:48So here's my invitation to you. If you can guess who
- 2:52said those words, speaking of the adoration of a God who has
- 2:56become bread, if you can identify who that is, if you can identify
- 3:00why that statement is formulated
- 3:04such that it lends itself to misinterpretation,
- 3:08of Catholic Eucharistic theology, he said protectively.
- 3:13Uh, let us know in the show notes. Contact me at thestationofthecross.com/askfather.
- 3:20And then on Friday, join me at thestationofthecross.com,
- 3:23your iCatholic Radio mobile app, 5 PM Eastern, The Catholic
- 3:28Current, where I am going to have a big reveal.
- 3:31Who said it? What's wrong with it? And what can be done to
- 3:35make sure that these kind of awkward moments never happen again?
- 3:39Friends, words are important.
- 3:43Words mean things.
- 3:47And having a position of responsibility means having an equal
- 3:51grave responsibility to use words that minimize
- 3:55the possibility of being misunderstood.
- 3:59And intercede for those poor souls who carry such
- 4:03a burden. Remember, join me Friday, 5 PM Eastern, The Catholic
- 4:07Current on thestationofthecross.com, because we are going to take a closer
- 4:12look. Meanwhile, think of these things today, take them to prayer,
- 4:15and talk about it with those you love. Go in peace, and please do pray
- 4:19for me, for I am a sinner.
