Latest / DISGRACELAND / Mötley Crüe Pt. 1: Sex, Drugs, and Even More Sex and Drugs: How Are These Dudes Still Alive?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Disgraceland as a production of Double Elvis. The stories about
- 0:21Speaker 1: eighties LA metal band Motley.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Crue are totally insane. They had a violent, fucket all
- 0:27Speaker 2: approach toward anything in anyone who got in their way.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Bass Player Nikki six once hammered a nail through a
- 0:34Speaker 2: so called poser's ear board. On tour, the band would
- 0:38Speaker 2: break bottles over each other's heads and see who could
- 0:40Speaker 2: swallow the most broken glass. In the early days, they
- 0:44Speaker 2: would pimp out their seventeen year old drummer Tommy Lee
- 0:47Speaker 2: for beer money. In studio time, they had sex with
- 0:50Speaker 2: or tried to have sex with anyone in anything that moved.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Nicki once went so far as to try to bed
- 0:56Speaker 2: Tommy's mom, and of course they all slept with each
- 0:59Speaker 2: other's girlfriends, beare behind each other's backs. And when they
- 1:02Speaker 2: made it big, they took their earnings and bought a plane.
- 1:05Speaker 2: But it wasn't enough just to own their own jet.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Motley Crue had to paint a giant dick and balls
- 1:10Speaker 2: on the tail so that when they landed, it would
- 1:12Speaker 2: literally look like they were flying in to fuck the city.
- 1:16Speaker 2: The excessive sex, drugs, and violence led to several near
- 1:19Speaker 2: death experiences multiple car crashes, fires, fights, drownings, and drug overdoses.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yet Motley Crue made a habit of cheating death and
- 1:28Speaker 2: made some great music along the way. That music I
- 1:32Speaker 2: played you at the top of the show. That wasn't
- 1:34Speaker 2: great music. That was a preset loop from my melotron
- 1:38Speaker 2: called Vienna Waltz Marimba Low MK one. I played you
- 1:43Speaker 2: that loop because I can't afford the license for Faith
- 1:46Speaker 2: by George Michael. And why would I play you that
- 1:48Speaker 2: specific slice of Didley esque Pleathan Cheese? Could I afford it?
- 1:53Speaker 2: Because that was the number one song in America on
- 1:56Speaker 2: December twenty third, nineteen eighty seven, And that was the
- 1:59Speaker 2: day of Nikki six bass player Motley Crue died, And
- 2:03Speaker 2: of course it was also the day he came back
- 2:06Speaker 2: to life. On this episode Pleasant Cheese, Waltzon, Marimba's Cheating
- 2:11Speaker 2: Death and Motley Crue, I'm Jake Brennan and this.
- 2:15Speaker 3: This disgrace man.
- 2:42Speaker 2: In nineteen seventy seven, Frank Farrana was a seventeen year
- 2:46Speaker 2: old teenage Deliquo. He was a pill popping weedhead and
- 2:50Speaker 2: devoted Johnny Thunder's wannabe. Frank Farana was a vacuum cleaner
- 2:54Speaker 2: salesman who dealt coeludes on the side with his next
- 2:57Speaker 2: door neighbor, a neighbor who's he was secretly sleeping with.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Frank Farana was also a punk, a fiend, a single
- 3:05Speaker 2: minded rock and roll animal whose one ambition was to
- 3:08Speaker 2: become the biggest baddest bass player in the world's biggest
- 3:12Speaker 2: baddest rock band. Frank Farana was Nicki six. Frank stole
- 3:17Speaker 2: his stage name from a childhood musician friend whom he
- 3:20Speaker 2: deemed unworthy of such a badass moniker. So Frank did
- 3:24Speaker 2: what came natural to him. He saw what he wanted,
- 3:27Speaker 2: and he took it, and voila, Nikki six was born.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Fuck that other guy. So Nicki six took to the
- 3:34Speaker 2: streets of late seventies Hollywood hell bent for action. Unlike most,
- 3:40Speaker 2: he didn't see his idols as people to live up to.
- 3:43Speaker 2: He saw his idols as people to outlive for. Niggi
- 3:47Speaker 2: Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls and Sid Vicious
- 3:49Speaker 2: of the Sex Business were warm up backs for the
- 3:51Speaker 2: real thing him. Nicki six might not have been in
- 3:55Speaker 2: a band yet, but he lived a life. He stole, cheated,
- 3:59Speaker 2: fucked and fought his way to the top. The Sunset Strip.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Heavy metal heat punk rock was burning out of the
- 4:05Speaker 2: public's consciousness and fast. His beloved sex Pistons were over,
- 4:10Speaker 2: as were the New York Dolls. Bands like The Clash
- 4:12Speaker 2: and Elvis Costello's attractions were, in Nicky's mind, too soft
- 4:17Speaker 2: and then sold out the promise of punk rock from
- 4:19Speaker 2: the mainstream and were more concerned with being political and
- 4:22Speaker 2: seeming smart rather than being rock and roll. Too clever
- 4:26Speaker 2: by half fuck that Nicki envisioned a world where the
- 4:30Speaker 2: sleeves and glamour of this beloved punk and British glam
- 4:33Speaker 2: bands would dominate the prevescent imaginations of teenagers everywhere. He
- 4:38Speaker 2: began dressing the party with scripting for himself. Silver studs,
- 4:42Speaker 2: skin tight black jeans, capezio boots or beverriette capezios with
- 4:46Speaker 2: stiletto heels, hair dyed jet black and piled up high
- 4:50Speaker 2: to the Hollywood hills, and of course I make up.
- 4:54Speaker 2: It was part Bleaker and Bowery punk and part spiders
- 4:57Speaker 2: from Mars glam. It was androgynous masculine at the same time.
- 5:01Speaker 2: It was tough and it was sexy. You didn't know
- 5:04Speaker 2: whether you wanted to fuck Nikki or fight Niki or both,
- 5:07Speaker 2: it didn't matter. The look was meant to confuse, to compel,
- 5:12Speaker 2: And who is this hot chick hanging out at the club.
- 5:13Speaker 2: It looked like you wanted to kick your ass. Oh yeah,
- 5:16Speaker 2: she's a heat and he's in a band. What kind
- 5:18Speaker 2: of band? He doesn't look punk, he doesn't look glam?
- 5:21Speaker 2: The hell is he? Shock? Aw? That was the idea.
- 5:25Speaker 2: If you didn't like it, you could fuck right off,
- 5:27Speaker 2: head downtown with the new wave geeks, or out to
- 5:29Speaker 2: Venice with the hardcore kids and gang bangers who never
- 5:32Speaker 2: got laid and took their frustration out on each other
- 5:34Speaker 2: in the pit, slam dancing a bunch of pent up
- 5:38Speaker 2: late and homosexual frustration. If you asked Nicki, Nicki six
- 5:42Speaker 2: was at the club for two reasons, to find his
- 5:44Speaker 2: future bandmates and to fuck your girlfriend. And if you
- 5:47Speaker 2: didn't like it, well that was your problem. When not
- 5:51Speaker 2: at the bar hanging out, Nicki was either sleeping off
- 5:54Speaker 2: a buzz or regrettably working. And Nicki hated work, but
- 5:58Speaker 2: he didn't hate wary work. At the liquor store, chicks
- 6:02Speaker 2: from Sunset Strip were always wandering in and eager to
- 6:05Speaker 2: check out the glamazon Italian kid with the makeup and
- 6:07Speaker 2: dreamy eyes working the register. And work the register he did.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Nicki was regularly skimming off the top to buy drugs, boos,
- 6:15Speaker 2: and musical gear. But the real reason he didn't hate
- 6:18Speaker 2: where he worked was because it was close to the action.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Musicians from bands playing and hanging out at nearby clubs
- 6:25Speaker 2: The Starwood, the Rainbow Room, and the Troubadour were always
- 6:28Speaker 2: popping in. Most of them were posers, hairdressing, weekend warrior
- 6:32Speaker 2: types who wouldn't know sweet from cheap trick, But Nicki
- 6:35Speaker 2: was optimistic. One of these nights, a like minded rock
- 6:38Speaker 2: and roll warrior would walk in and Nicki would finally
- 6:41Speaker 2: have a bandmate. And so it happened. The dude looked
- 6:44Speaker 2: like he was Gene Simmons as mini me. That is,
- 6:47Speaker 2: if Gene Simmons were actually as bad ass as his
- 6:49Speaker 2: image purported him to be. This dude was far fucking
- 6:53Speaker 2: out and he was dressed head to toe in black,
- 6:56Speaker 2: a beat up less Paul guitar case in hand platform
- 6:59Speaker 2: boots with duct taped heels, silver studs, his eyes heavily
- 7:03Speaker 2: mass scaret and buried beneath his jet black bangs. He
- 7:07Speaker 2: spoke in barely audible mumbles, and NICKI commented on the
- 7:10Speaker 2: guitar asked him his name and wanted to know what
- 7:12Speaker 2: the bands he was into, and a little alien looking
- 7:15Speaker 2: cousin it dude told Nicky. But Nicky wasn't listening because
- 7:18Speaker 2: it didn't matter, because in it could have said John
- 7:21Speaker 2: Dever or Judy Collins and it wouldn't have mattered at all,
- 7:24Speaker 2: because the dude's look was right, and like the rock
- 7:27Speaker 2: gods Jagger and Ronson before him, his name was Mick,
- 7:31Speaker 2: Mick Mars, and he was perfect and always but one
- 7:35Speaker 2: he was on his way to Alaska for a tour
- 7:37Speaker 2: with his lame band Shit. Nicky wasn't deterred, though, He
- 7:42Speaker 2: was determined and kept up the search. Through a mutual friend,
- 7:46Speaker 2: he hooked up with a seventeen going on twelve year
- 7:48Speaker 2: old drummer and ball of phrenetic energy named Tommy Lee.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Tommy was young, but he had chops and he was
- 7:54Speaker 2: a skinny adonis. The chicks loved him before he even
- 7:57Speaker 2: sat down at his kit. Plus, he and Nicky had
- 8:00Speaker 2: legit chemistry, and Tommy idolized the older Nicky six, who'd
- 8:04Speaker 2: already gained a rap on the strip as a dude
- 8:06Speaker 2: not to be fucked with and a dude. It was
- 8:08Speaker 2: going places, but they still needed a guitar player, so
- 8:12Speaker 2: they started combing recycler magazines classifieds. Tommy spotted the listing first.
- 8:17Speaker 2: It read loud, rude and aggressive guitarist available. And there
- 8:22Speaker 2: was another listing with the exact same number, and this
- 8:25Speaker 2: one with even more spot on descriptors extraterrestrial guitarist available
- 8:29Speaker 2: for any other aliens that want to conquer the Earth.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Tommy couldn't get the little wheel on the rotary telephone
- 8:35Speaker 2: to spin fast enough. He quickly dialed the number to
- 8:38Speaker 2: set up a jam session, and in a couple of
- 8:40Speaker 2: days a faint knock on the door produced none other
- 8:42Speaker 2: than the alien looking cousin it dude from the liquor store.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Nicky could not believe his eyes. It was a universe talking.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Mick Marrs had arrived. Three down, one to go. They
- 8:55Speaker 2: needed a singer. Tommy knew a guy. It was a
- 8:58Speaker 2: long shot. The guy was yond cool, way cooler than Tommy,
- 9:02Speaker 2: maybe even cooler than Nicky and Mick. But Nicky and
- 9:04Speaker 2: Mick didn't give a fucking really, what's cooler? They're not
- 9:06Speaker 2: giving a fuck nothing. But Tommy's ex schoolmate was like
- 9:09Speaker 2: the coolest dude on campus. He was a singer in
- 9:12Speaker 2: a local band that jammed on cheap trick and arrowsmith
- 9:15Speaker 2: and that mainly existed as means for the band get league.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Not that the singer who Tommy coveted needed any help.
- 9:21Speaker 2: He was gorgeous. He had that Spacoli look before that
- 9:24Speaker 2: Spacoli look was even a thing. Long blonde sunstroke surfer hair,
- 9:29Speaker 2: eternally tanned, ripped Levi's devilish eyes, and the dude could
- 9:33Speaker 2: not only hit those high Robin Xander minks, he could
- 9:36Speaker 2: work the crowd like Stephen Tyler, and Tommy's timing couldn't
- 9:39Speaker 2: have been better. The singer was on the oul to
- 9:41Speaker 2: this band, so a rehearsal with Tommy, Nicky and Mick
- 9:44Speaker 2: was arranged. The two eighty Z roared into the parking
- 9:48Speaker 2: lot at Burbank's IRS rehearsal studios with authority, and eighteen
- 9:52Speaker 2: year old Vince Neil hopped out of the driver's seat,
- 9:55Speaker 2: trailed by his very attractive, very rich, older girlfriend, the
- 9:59Speaker 2: owner of the two week who proceeded to tell anyone
- 10:02Speaker 2: who was listening, No one was just how stupid an
- 10:05Speaker 2: idea it was for Vince to be stooping to Tommy
- 10:07Speaker 2: Lee's level. She was thoroughly ignored. A gallon of peppermin
- 10:11Speaker 2: schnapps was shared, as were a few words on musical
- 10:14Speaker 2: references in the usual Suspects, the Dolls, the Pistols, Sweet Sabbath,
- 10:19Speaker 2: and when they got down to it and picked up
- 10:21Speaker 2: their instruments, the chemistry was instant. Tommy's energy pulled Nicky's
- 10:25Speaker 2: sloppy bass playing into a makeshift pocket. Mixed guttural riffs
- 10:29Speaker 2: provided a dark platform for Vince's anthemic voice, and they
- 10:33Speaker 2: quickly demonstrated a knack for making powerful, electrifying music. And
- 10:37Speaker 2: in no time Motley Crue was born, and throughout their
- 10:41Speaker 2: life as a band, they would demonstrate an uncanny knack
- 10:45Speaker 2: for cheating death. Everyone knows vampires aren't real, everyone except
- 11:07Speaker 2: Angelino's La residents have a special relationship with the creatures
- 11:11Speaker 2: of the night, a weariness, almost like an acceptance that, yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 2: if vampires exist anywhere, and they probably exist here in
- 11:19Speaker 2: La up the road in Sacramento. In the late seventies,
- 11:22Speaker 2: Richard Chase and enterprising twenty seven year old serial killer
- 11:26Speaker 2: drank his victim's blood before cannibalizing them. He was known
- 11:30Speaker 2: publicly as the Vampire Killer, and in Hollywood there'd long
- 11:34Speaker 2: been rumors of secret vampire societies where members were known
- 11:38Speaker 2: to subsist on raw filet mignon and to drink the
- 11:41Speaker 2: blood of teenage girls during sex. Whenever residents read in
- 11:45Speaker 2: the paper about a Jane Doe turning up dead, maybe
- 11:48Speaker 2: underneath the bridge down in the valley, they couldn't help
- 11:51Speaker 2: but think about the lost boys out in Venice, or
- 11:53Speaker 2: the bad boys out on the strip, standing in the
- 11:56Speaker 2: shadows with designs in the blood pumping through the good
- 11:59Speaker 2: girls with broken hearts. Dom Menendez was a god fearing man,
- 12:05Speaker 2: and he was outside his apartment complex watering the flowers
- 12:08Speaker 2: in his front yard like he did every Sunday morning
- 12:10Speaker 2: before Church. Went out of the front door stumbled what
- 12:14Speaker 2: Dom believed to be one of Hollywood's rumored creatures of
- 12:16Speaker 2: the night in the flesh before his very own eyes.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Could it be tall menacing, dressed like an extra from
- 12:24Speaker 2: a Mad Max movie, with skin the color of milk
- 12:28Speaker 2: and one tattooed arm shielding his eyes? But what was
- 12:31Speaker 2: most telling and most frightening was the blood. It covered
- 12:35Speaker 2: his face, and it was most intense around the vampire's mouth.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Fresh from a feeding frenzy in Dom's apartment building on
- 12:42Speaker 2: a Sunday before Church, Dom dropped the garden hose and
- 12:46Speaker 2: passed out, face down in his petunias, and Nikki six
- 12:51Speaker 2: didn't give him a second look. As he bounded by
- 12:53Speaker 2: and hopped into his Porsche. He flipped down the driver's
- 12:55Speaker 2: side visor to check his mascara in the mirror, and
- 12:58Speaker 2: that's when he noticed the blood. Shit, No wonder the
- 13:02Speaker 2: old man was looking at him strange. Nicki looked like
- 13:04Speaker 2: a glamed out Vlad the Impaler. The blood must have
- 13:08Speaker 2: been from the nerdy neighbor he'd been going down on
- 13:10Speaker 2: earlier that morning. She clearly had her period, and judging
- 13:14Speaker 2: King the amount of blood, it was day one and
- 13:17Speaker 2: Nicky didn't care. He was aspiraling out of control. It
- 13:20Speaker 2: was nineteen eighty four. Motley Crue's second album, Shout at
- 13:23Speaker 2: the Devil, had established them as a band not to
- 13:26Speaker 2: be fucked with. Critics hated it, kids loved it, and
- 13:29Speaker 2: it was selling big time, and Nicki and the rest
- 13:33Speaker 2: of the boys were living the life, but fresh off
- 13:36Speaker 2: the road from an epically debaucherous tour with the Prince
- 13:38Speaker 2: of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne, Nicki was at loose ends.
- 13:43Speaker 2: He had discovered his girlfriend at the time, former Runaways
- 13:46Speaker 2: guitar player and five Alarmed Smoke Show lead A Ford,
- 13:48Speaker 2: had been set up with another dude by one of
- 13:50Speaker 2: her skeezy punk rock guy friends, and Nicky was pissed,
- 13:54Speaker 2: so he grabbed Tommy in a couple two by fours
- 13:56Speaker 2: and headed over to Leda's apartment, where he knew her
- 13:58Speaker 2: punk rock friend was staying. The two burst in like
- 14:01Speaker 2: a heavy metal buddy cop duo and proceeded to beat
- 14:04Speaker 2: the punk dude near death with the two by fours.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Then it was off to receipt a country club. Nicki
- 14:11Speaker 2: had dropped Tommy off in his place and picked up
- 14:13Speaker 2: a date. He was high on kailas drunk on jack
- 14:16Speaker 2: and with this new girl who was hot to trot,
- 14:19Speaker 2: and the two pulled into the parking lot and hopped
- 14:21Speaker 2: out of the Porsche, but only made it as far
- 14:23Speaker 2: as the hood before giving into their colonel desires. It
- 14:26Speaker 2: was broad daylight and Nikki was fully engaged in intercourse
- 14:29Speaker 2: with his date on the hood of his car in
- 14:31Speaker 2: the middle of the receipt a country club parking lot.
- 14:34Speaker 2: A crowd began to gather and started an egg lam
- 14:36Speaker 2: on nice car, dude, nice dick dude. Hey, said Nikki
- 14:41Speaker 2: from Motley. It is too ut. Niki, despite the distraction
- 14:46Speaker 2: of the crowd, and despite his increation, brought himself to climax,
- 14:50Speaker 2: rolled off his date and onto his back on the
- 14:52Speaker 2: hook of his Porsche with Frank Farana Salami. Still hard
- 14:55Speaker 2: and fully exposed. He looked at the crowd of wastoid
- 14:58Speaker 2: metal heads and staring at him, me, who am I?
- 15:02Speaker 2: Is this real? Am I really alive? We'll be right
- 15:08Speaker 2: back after this word word word. Living long was never
- 15:14Speaker 2: the plan, Living fast was the plan. Johnny Thunders did
- 15:18Speaker 2: never retirement fund, and Sid Vicious didn't have a fucking
- 15:21Speaker 2: IRA And to paraphrase fair and Young, live fast, fuck
- 15:24Speaker 2: hard and leave a notorious memory. But Nicki, Mick, Tom
- 15:27Speaker 2: and Vince were beginning to sense their immortality again and
- 15:31Speaker 2: again they managed to escape their certain fate. There was
- 15:34Speaker 2: the fire in the hotel room in Germany, where they
- 15:36Speaker 2: managed to get out unharmed, And there was the other
- 15:39Speaker 2: fire on stage where Tommy's drum tech set his face
- 15:41Speaker 2: aflame with the smoke machine and flooded the stage. Yet
- 15:44Speaker 2: the band avoided electrocution. And there was a time Nicki
- 15:48Speaker 2: walked away naked and dazed from a bad car accident
- 15:51Speaker 2: where he wrapped his Porsche around a tree. And there
- 15:54Speaker 2: was the constant drug abuse coke, heroin, speed, speedballs, and
- 15:59Speaker 2: yet no over, not yet at least, And of course
- 16:03Speaker 2: there was constant casual sex. Casual is too casual a
- 16:08Speaker 2: word for Motley Cruz. Sex wasn't casual. Sex was a
- 16:11Speaker 2: twenty four to seven full time occupation. The band was
- 16:14Speaker 2: dtf fully and fucked all the time. They slept with
- 16:18Speaker 2: everything and anything. Vince had been having sex with multiple
- 16:21Speaker 2: women multiple times a day since he was in high school.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Before he was even a star. In the early days,
- 16:28Speaker 2: they pimped out Tommy for beer money. They made him
- 16:30Speaker 2: sleep with the engineer at the first studio they recorded
- 16:33Speaker 2: at for free studio time. To throw the girlfriends off
- 16:36Speaker 2: the scente of their sunset strip sexual conquest, the boys
- 16:39Speaker 2: would hit the taco truck on their way home at night,
- 16:42Speaker 2: buy a couple egg and cheese burritos, and stick their
- 16:44Speaker 2: dicks in them to mask the smell of sex, and
- 16:47Speaker 2: when they became famous, it just became more insane. Sex
- 16:50Speaker 2: backstage was a given before and after shows, like immediately
- 16:55Speaker 2: after shows, as in, walk off stage, grab a girl,
- 16:58Speaker 2: any girl, and get right down to it quick in
- 17:01Speaker 2: public view of everyone else around. It's no exaggeration to
- 17:04Speaker 2: say that life for Motley Crue was quite literally a
- 17:07Speaker 2: non stop orgy. How they all hadn't contracted HIV was
- 17:10Speaker 2: a miracle, yet there they were, living it up and
- 17:14Speaker 2: cheating death. Nick Marr's have been drinking for days straight,
- 17:19Speaker 2: trying to avoid his girlfriend, his bandmates, and any and
- 17:22Speaker 2: all sense of responsibility that his newfound fame was now
- 17:25Speaker 2: cramping his style with. He was the type of drunk
- 17:29Speaker 2: that it is hard to explain to people who haven't
- 17:31Speaker 2: gone on serious two to three four day vendors, the
- 17:35Speaker 2: type of drunk where the consistent drinking and lack of
- 17:37Speaker 2: sleep creates an alternate reality in one's mind, one where
- 17:41Speaker 2: you feel in total control, even though of course you
- 17:43Speaker 2: totally aren't. Your thoughts make sense to you, yet you
- 17:47Speaker 2: are completely out of step with reality. You speak to
- 17:50Speaker 2: your friends and you hear the words come out of
- 17:51Speaker 2: your mouth, and they sound perfectly articulate. But what your
- 17:55Speaker 2: friends hear is a garbled, backward mess of words. You
- 17:58Speaker 2: get ideas like, Hey, I don't necessarily want to go swimming,
- 18:01Speaker 2: but I just want to walk into the ocean because
- 18:03Speaker 2: it seems peaceful. And yeah, I know I've been drinking
- 18:05Speaker 2: rum and coke since last Tuesday. But still I got
- 18:08Speaker 2: I got this. It doesn't matter that I can't swim.
- 18:11Speaker 2: I'm just gonna walk into the ocean. I'm not even
- 18:14Speaker 2: gonna take my clothes off. Besides, it's nighttime, nobody's even here.
- 18:17Speaker 2: It doesn't the water look so peaceful? And so Mick
- 18:21Speaker 2: Mars like Stirling Hayden and long goodbye. Stepped into the
- 18:24Speaker 2: Pacific Ocean from the sandy shore below Vince Neil's Redondo
- 18:28Speaker 2: Beach home. One step and then another, His mind began
- 18:32Speaker 2: to quiet finally, and then blackness. Where's Mick, Tommy asked
- 18:40Speaker 2: Vince at the party upstairs at Vince's place. Who the
- 18:43Speaker 2: fuck knows? Vince could have cared less, He was busy
- 18:46Speaker 2: watching Tommy's fiance, Honey take turns. At Tommy's insistence, I'm
- 18:51Speaker 2: going down on a row of guys and Vince's jacuzzi.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Honey would do anything for Tommy, and Tommy would do
- 18:56Speaker 2: anything for his friends. The Hanoi Rocks guys are in
- 19:00Speaker 2: town from Finland, and there were at Vince's Rodondo Beach
- 19:03Speaker 2: House celebrating the US tour they were waiting to embark on.
- 19:06Speaker 2: The party was epic, even by Motley Crue standards. Not
- 19:09Speaker 2: only were the Hanoi guys in town and in need
- 19:11Speaker 2: of being shown a good time, but famous producer in
- 19:14Speaker 2: Hollywood Hills party impresario Roy Thomas Baker was hanging out.
- 19:19Speaker 2: He'd been the first to show Motley Crue how to
- 19:20Speaker 2: throw a party our TV, as they called him. His
- 19:23Speaker 2: parties were as legend as the Queen and t Rex
- 19:26Speaker 2: records that he made, so Vince was serious about returning
- 19:29Speaker 2: the favor. The only problem was and they were out
- 19:31Speaker 2: of beer, and where the fuck was Mick. The nineteen
- 19:36Speaker 2: seventy two Ford Pantera is a serious automobile. It was
- 19:40Speaker 2: Ford's answer to the Ferrari, the Lamborghini, and Porsche sports cars.
- 19:44Speaker 2: It's a small car built for speed. A V eight
- 19:47Speaker 2: engine capable of pumping out an impressive three hundred and
- 19:49Speaker 2: thirty horsepower. Most Ford Pantera owners are caerr hobbyists weekend
- 19:54Speaker 2: track rats who use their powerful speedster to race around
- 19:57Speaker 2: with other semi pros. N Neil used his Ford Pantera
- 20:02Speaker 2: for beer runs after staying up for three days straight
- 20:06Speaker 2: drinking and doing blow. Vince pumped the engine. The Pantera
- 20:11Speaker 2: purred like a panther, as it was designed to do.
- 20:13Speaker 2: The sign said twenty five miles per hour, The odometer
- 20:16Speaker 2: said fifty miles per hour, and the engine now roared razzle.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Dingley drummer for Hanoi rocks, hung on for dear life,
- 20:24Speaker 2: his right hand clutching the handle above the passenger side door,
- 20:27Speaker 2: his left hand cradingly a couple hundred dollars worth of
- 20:30Speaker 2: booze and beer of brown paper bags on his lap.
- 20:33Speaker 2: The curvy Redondo Beach roads were unforgiving. Vince pushed the
- 20:36Speaker 2: accelerator fifty five miles per hour. Razzle grinned, exhilarated slick
- 20:42Speaker 2: with freshly fallen rain. The road unwound before them. Vince
- 20:46Speaker 2: wound the engine faster sixty miles per hour, faster still
- 20:50Speaker 2: sixty three miles per hour, even faster sixty five miles
- 20:54Speaker 2: per hour, and at twenty five mile per hour, zone,
- 20:57Speaker 2: then head lights. Razzle's heart pumped with fear. Vince pumped
- 21:02Speaker 2: the brakes, and the Pantera spun, angling passenger side first
- 21:06Speaker 2: across the road and right into the front of the
- 21:08Speaker 2: oncoming Volkswagen. Its passengers were pinballed together violently. The side
- 21:13Speaker 2: door nearest Razzle, now an accordion, pushed his prone body
- 21:17Speaker 2: onto Vince's lap. Blood. Razzle's blood was everywhere. The impact
- 21:23Speaker 2: was too much. Razzle, Dingley, drummer for promising heavy metal
- 21:28Speaker 2: band Hanoi Rocks and expectant father, died later that evening
- 21:32Speaker 2: at the hospital. Vince Neil, singer of the world's most
- 21:36Speaker 2: hedonistic rock band Motley Crue, emerged unscathed, blew a point
- 21:40Speaker 2: one point seven on the breathalyzer, paid a two point
- 21:43Speaker 2: one million dollar fine, served thirty days in a country
- 21:46Speaker 2: club posing as a prison, and hit the road with
- 21:48Speaker 2: his band again like nothing happened. Having thoroughly cheated justice
- 21:52Speaker 2: and death for what seemed to be the umpteenth time,
- 22:12Speaker 2: Tommy Lee, perhaps realizing the STD bullets he dodged up
- 22:15Speaker 2: to this point, took himself off the market and married
- 22:18Speaker 2: actress Heather Locklear. Vince Neil, fresh out of rehab and
- 22:23Speaker 2: jail went right back to being Vince Neil, snorting drugs,
- 22:27Speaker 2: banging everything that moved on that fateful night that Vince
- 22:30Speaker 2: Neil's carelessness brought death to his friend Razzle's door. McK
- 22:34Speaker 2: maurer is washed up on the shore beneath Vince's house
- 22:36Speaker 2: after his half hearted stab at suicide. He awoke to
- 22:40Speaker 2: the blinding Pacific Coast sun, his clothes dried and wrinkled
- 22:44Speaker 2: on his dry and wrinkled skin. The ocean had spit
- 22:47Speaker 2: him back out. Death, it seemed, didn't want him on
- 22:51Speaker 2: that day in nor did he want Vince or Tommy.
- 22:55Speaker 2: But death hadn't quite made up its mind yet about Nicky.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Nicky six died on December twenty third, nineteen eighty seven,
- 23:02Speaker 2: at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California. The doctors
- 23:07Speaker 2: pronounced him dead before midnight. Death suited Nikki. It came
- 23:12Speaker 2: with a calm, a sense of inner peace, and a
- 23:14Speaker 2: balance that he could never quite attain in life. The
- 23:17Speaker 2: feeling overtook him and he dug it. A warm wave
- 23:21Speaker 2: embraced him as he ascended out of the ravage. Tattooed
- 23:24Speaker 2: in track marked shell of a body, he'd been dragging
- 23:26Speaker 2: Nicki six around in for the better part of a decade.
- 23:30Speaker 2: A body he'd been injecting with cocaine and heroin regularly daily,
- 23:34Speaker 2: sometimes at the same time, A body that used to
- 23:37Speaker 2: be beautiful but now was little more than a glammed out,
- 23:40Speaker 2: road worn bag of bones. He could see it lying there,
- 23:44Speaker 2: at first exposed to the jarring fluorescent hospital lights, then
- 23:49Speaker 2: lying unnaturally still under a sheet atop the gurney he'd
- 23:53Speaker 2: been on since back at the Franklin Plaza hotel. The
- 23:57Speaker 2: party at the hotel with the Guns n' Roses and
- 23:59Speaker 2: Megada guys was turned up to eleven per usual. Someone
- 24:03Speaker 2: offered to tie Nikki off with some sweet Persian heroin,
- 24:06Speaker 2: and as soon as the drug hit his vein, he
- 24:08Speaker 2: went blue and passed out. Someone called nine to one one.
- 24:11Speaker 2: The drug dealer jumped out of the window and took
- 24:13Speaker 2: off down the street, yelling I just killed Nicky six
- 24:18Speaker 2: g and our guitarist, Slash, confused and frightened, decided it
- 24:21Speaker 2: was a good time to trash the hotel room's bathroom.
- 24:24Speaker 2: The EMTs quickly made the scene and strapped Nicky to
- 24:26Speaker 2: the aforementioned gurney and hustled him to the hospital and
- 24:29Speaker 2: now here he was dead. He could see the commotion
- 24:34Speaker 2: all around him, but felt no turn one. Emergency room
- 24:38Speaker 2: staff frantically booted him up with adrenaline shots from big,
- 24:41Speaker 2: ugly hypodermic needles, but nothing. He heard the EKG monitor
- 24:46Speaker 2: chirping intermittently, but now it just sang a sad one
- 24:49Speaker 2: note song. A nurse with thick forearms repeatedly smacked Nicky's cheeks.
- 24:55Speaker 2: A doctor shouted, We're losing him. Hospital staff buzzed in
- 24:58Speaker 2: and out of the room. He heard someone asked, is
- 25:00Speaker 2: that really him? And through all of the tense energy
- 25:03Speaker 2: surging around him, Nicki remained calm and watched his death
- 25:07Speaker 2: unfold below him. He was content for the first time
- 25:11Speaker 2: in his life, except he wasn't alive. He was dead,
- 25:16Speaker 2: lying on a gurney under a sheet with his eyes closed,
- 25:21Speaker 2: yet he could see everything around him. He felt nothing
- 25:24Speaker 2: but peace. He had no sense of guilt or ego
- 25:26Speaker 2: or addiction, just calm. Then the worst pain he'd ever
- 25:32Speaker 2: felt in his life, a jolt to his heart that
- 25:35Speaker 2: was part lightning bolt, part Peterbilt tracted trailer growth and bamed.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Nicki opened his eyes and bolted upright on the gurney,
- 25:43Speaker 2: back to life, but feeling like a truck hit him.
- 25:45Speaker 2: The pain was immense, his headache was blinding, his eyes burned,
- 25:50Speaker 2: his stomach nod she itched all over. He was admitted,
- 25:56Speaker 2: given a room, and questioned by police who wanted to
- 25:59Speaker 2: know who gave him the heroine. Nicki asked if he
- 26:01Speaker 2: was under arrest. The cop said no and pressed him
- 26:04Speaker 2: again to give up his dealer. Nicki told him the
- 26:06Speaker 2: fuck off, ripped the ivy needles out of his arms,
- 26:09Speaker 2: pulled the tubes out of his nose, and walked out
- 26:10Speaker 2: of the hospital shirtless in just his leather pants and
- 26:13Speaker 2: motorcycle boots. Said Vicious died of a heroin overdose. Pussy
- 26:20Speaker 2: Johnny Thunders also died of a heroin overdose, also a pussy.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Nicky six a mortal death cheating rock god. In his
- 26:30Speaker 2: mind at least, Nicky Six, like Tommy Lee, Micmars, and
- 26:33Speaker 2: Vince Neil were more like complete degenerates, doing anything at
- 26:38Speaker 2: the expense of anyone, even themselves, to live the rock
- 26:41Speaker 2: and roll animal life to the fullest. Vince's behavior, of course,
- 26:45Speaker 2: resulted in the loss of life of a friend in
- 26:48Speaker 2: a stupid and careless accident and Motley Crue lived hard,
- 26:52Speaker 2: so hard that death just wasn't deadly enough. Or maybe
- 26:56Speaker 2: they're actually the undead, immortal creatures of the night, eating
- 27:00Speaker 2: death from its due, you know, kind of like those
- 27:03Speaker 2: rumored Hollywood vampires. Of course, they could have just been
- 27:06Speaker 2: batshit crazy and a little bit lucky, insatiable rock and
- 27:10Speaker 2: roll animals determined to outlive, out drug, out brawl and
- 27:13Speaker 2: outball their heroes. But I don't know. I say it's
- 27:17Speaker 2: even on sayre vampires. Has anyone ever seen Mick Mars
- 27:21Speaker 2: in the Daylight?
- 27:22Speaker 3: I haven't.
