- 0:00Speaker 1: What happens at the ballot box when the cheapest places
- 0:02Speaker 1: to live in America have become unaffordable?
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm thinking about how I'm going to rob Peter to
- 0:07Speaker 2: pay Paul because food prices are extremely high.
- 0:13Speaker 1: On the Sunday story, Midwesterners say they're fed up and
- 0:16Speaker 1: plan to take their anger to the polls in November.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Listen now to the Sunday story from the Up First
- 0:22Speaker 1: podcast on the NPR app.
- 0:24Speaker 3: You're listening to Life Kit from NPR. Hey, everybody. It's Marielle.
- 0:32Speaker 3: October is hands down my favorite month because I love
- 0:37Speaker 3: spooky season. Just feels like there's a little sparkle floating
- 0:40Speaker 3: through the air. My one neighbor put out this giant
- 0:43Speaker 3: dancing animatronic pumpkin. Another neighbor always does a theme. This
- 0:48Speaker 3: year seems to be creepy dolls. Picture a lot of
- 0:50Speaker 3: dolls and then double that. We're talking porcelain dolls, Barbies,
- 0:55Speaker 3: Cabbage Patch Kids, sitting on the stoop, keeping watch over
- 0:58Speaker 3: a glowing cauldron. And staring. Always staring. October is a
- 1:04Speaker 3: time for mischief and make-believe. And not just for kids.
- 1:07Speaker 3: We adults also get the chance to dress up in
- 1:10Speaker 3: character as anyone or anything.
- 1:13Speaker 4: It's really fun. And being an adult isn't that fun.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Don't I know it. That said, it is totally normal
- 1:21Speaker 3: to get to this part of October and not have
- 1:23Speaker 3: a costume idea. Because, yeah, the options are limitless, but
- 1:27Speaker 3: that's kind of overwhelming, right? If you can be anything,
- 1:29Speaker 3: how do you narrow it down? Also, maybe you're busy.
- 1:33Speaker 3: You haven't had the time to think about it. Well,
- 1:35Speaker 3: today is your chance, ghouls. Or pumpkins. I don't know,
- 1:39Speaker 3: I'm still workshopping some things. On this episode of Life Kit,
- 1:42Speaker 3: we are going to help you find and put together
- 1:44Speaker 3: a costume. And by we, I mean me and Sophie Strauss,
- 1:48Speaker 3: who you just heard.
- 1:49Speaker 4: I am a stylist for regular people. I help normal
- 1:54Speaker 4: people find From all walks of life, get dressed. And
- 1:59Speaker 4: I try to do that with a focus on inclusivity
- 2:03Speaker 4: and sustainability and make it feel accessible.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Sophie also happens to be a Halloween enthusiast. And we
- 2:11Speaker 3: are going to talk about how to choose a character
- 2:13Speaker 3: or maybe an object or a concept, how to make
- 2:16Speaker 3: your costume recognizable, and how to do all of this
- 2:19Speaker 3: sustainably and without spending a lot of money. Let's fly, witches.

- 3:40Speaker 3: OK, so do you know what you're going to be
- 3:42Speaker 3: this year?
- 3:43Speaker 4: So I am going to be Tim Riggins from Friday
- 3:46Speaker 4: Night Lights.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Okay, I have not seen Friday Night Lights. Can you
- 3:49Speaker 3: explain this character to me?
- 3:50Speaker 4: Yes, yes. Tim Riggins is like America's number one heartthrob,
- 3:56Speaker 4: just big himbo energy, starts off kind of dark and
- 3:59Speaker 4: brooding and then becomes sort of lovable, is the bad
- 4:03Speaker 4: boy with a heart of gold. And I think his
- 4:06Speaker 4: way of dressing is so specific and kind of like
- 4:11Speaker 4: takes on its own, it's subtle, but kind of a
- 4:14Speaker 4: consistent like, Southern guy who could fix your car, but
- 4:21Speaker 4: his guns are always out, like his arms, I mean,
- 4:23Speaker 4: not actual guns. And so I'm really excited to be
- 4:27Speaker 4: able to embody that. Okay.
- 4:29Speaker 3: So how are you going to do it? What are
- 4:32Speaker 3: the elements of the costume that you're putting together?
- 4:34Speaker 4: Well, I was really thinking a lot about what's a
- 4:38Speaker 4: costume I could do that would feel really fun for me,
- 4:41Speaker 4: that would feel... give me that sort of thing that
- 4:44Speaker 4: I love about a costume, which is permission to like
- 4:46Speaker 4: lose yourself a little bit into a character, but also
- 4:50Speaker 4: is something I could put together with clothes that I
- 4:54Speaker 4: already own. And if I do need to purchase something,
- 4:57Speaker 4: is it A, something I can purchase used and B,
- 4:59Speaker 4: is it something that I could see myself getting wear
- 5:02Speaker 4: out of even if it wasn't Halloween? And so I
- 5:07Speaker 4: have some like boot cut, I'll wear those with cowboy boots,
- 5:12Speaker 4: like a brown leather belt. I'm going to carry a football.
- 5:15Speaker 4: And then my one purchase for this was a used
- 5:21Speaker 4: Dylan Panthers, like, gray T-shirt that has the sleeves cut off,
- 5:27Speaker 4: which is like a classic Tim Riggins T-shirt to wear.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Well, okay, so this gets me to, like, I feel
- 5:33Speaker 3: like for a Halloween costume, really– it's the accessories. Like
- 5:38Speaker 3: a few accessories go a long way when it comes
- 5:40Speaker 3: to signaling who you are.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Oh, absolutely. Because this comes up not just for Halloween
- 5:46Speaker 4: in my work, but also like, I don't know if
- 5:48Speaker 4: anybody's been invited to like a themed party or there's
- 5:52Speaker 4: a sort of an uptick in like really specific themed weddings,
- 5:56Speaker 4: like dress codes that are like space cowboy or, you know,
- 6:01Speaker 4: ranch chic or something like that. And I think it's
- 6:04Speaker 4: really tempting to like try to run out and buy
- 6:08Speaker 4: something like that's like a full outfit head to toe
- 6:12Speaker 4: and accessories do a lot of heavy lifting and are
- 6:15Speaker 4: more versatile, cheaper, tend to be like easy to find
- 6:19Speaker 4: secondhand or maybe are something you can borrow. So same
- 6:23Speaker 4: thing with Halloween costumes is like, I'm just wearing jeans.
- 6:27Speaker 4: But if I bring in like a football and a
- 6:30Speaker 4: belt with like a Western buckle, I think that's going
- 6:33Speaker 4: to do a lot to make me go from just
- 6:35Speaker 4: a lady in jeans to America's heartthrob, Tim Riggins.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Okay. Well, let's say you don't know where to start.
- 6:44Speaker 3: You don't already have, you know, Tim Riggins in mind.
- 6:48Speaker 3: How do you even begin to decide what you might
- 6:50Speaker 3: want to be for Halloween?
- 6:52Speaker 9: Sure.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Sure. I think the first question to ask yourself is
- 6:56Speaker 4: to be honest about the type of Halloween person you are.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Are you an all-out hair, makeup, accessories, I can't wait
- 7:06Speaker 4: to just dress up and lose myself to this costume?
- 7:09Speaker 4: I'm so thrilled by the idea of that. Are you
- 7:12Speaker 4: that kind of person? Or are you somebody who's really like,
- 7:16Speaker 4: are you Jim from The Office, three-hold paper?
- 7:18Speaker 2: Are you.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Listen, this is not really for me, but I don't
- 7:23Speaker 4: want to be the biggest party pooper ever. So I'm
- 7:25Speaker 4: going to wear somewhat of a costume. I think you
- 7:29Speaker 4: have to be honest with yourself because there's no right
- 7:31Speaker 4: or wrong. And if you're one and you're trying to
- 7:33Speaker 4: do the other, I think you're going to be sad.
- 7:35Speaker 4: So that's where I would start. And then once you
- 7:37Speaker 4: identify that, I tend to gravitate towards thinking about recent
- 7:43Speaker 4: pop culture, thinking about shows, movies, celebrities, you know, trending things.
- 7:51Speaker 4: news stories or topics or phrases or memes. Like, that
- 7:54Speaker 4: can always be a fun place to start. Or I love, like,
- 7:59Speaker 4: a random household object. I think that's always unexpected and
- 8:02Speaker 4: sort of a fun craft is, like, I'm a bottle
- 8:05Speaker 4: of Windex. You know, there's no wrong answer.
- 8:07Speaker 3: The classic baked potato.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Baked potato. It's so great. So I think Instagram has
- 8:13Speaker 4: definitely lent itself to the era of, like, the pop
- 8:16Speaker 4: culture reference. You know, the I'm this really niche person.
- 8:20Speaker 4: outfit from a really niche episode of a television show
- 8:23Speaker 4: this one character wore one time and I'm gonna like
- 8:25Speaker 4: take one photo and then use the screen like that's
- 8:27Speaker 4: tempting but also like you can be an apple like
- 8:30Speaker 4: who cares you know but I think I would sort
- 8:34Speaker 4: of start by throwing out like directional like does being
- 8:38Speaker 4: a fruit excite you or does being like somebody from
- 8:41Speaker 4: a tabloid excite you see what what makes your heart
- 8:45Speaker 4: sing a little bit and and follow that down the
- 8:47Speaker 4: rabbit hole.
- 8:49Speaker 3: I think that for me, getting to wear a costume
- 8:53Speaker 3: is an opportunity to embrace some part of yourself that's
- 8:57Speaker 3: like deep within or that maybe people don't normally see or...
- 9:02Speaker 3: embrace a character that you really admire for some reason.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Sometimes you admire someone just because they're really good at,
- 9:08Speaker 3: you know, throwing a football or they're really good at
- 9:12Speaker 3: parallel parking or they just have a lot of swagger
- 9:15Speaker 3: and you kind of like that and you want to
- 9:17Speaker 3: bring a little bit of that into your life. Or
- 9:20Speaker 3: it sounds like there's like a gender bendy thing too,
- 9:24Speaker 3: which I think can be really fun.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Oh, for sure. Yeah. I think that's like a huge
- 9:30Speaker 4: part of the Timmergens thing for me is like as
- 9:33Speaker 4: somebody who like I identify, I guess, as bisexual. So
- 9:37Speaker 4: like there's something really fun being in like an otherwise
- 9:41Speaker 4: straight relationship in my life and like moving through the
- 9:44Speaker 4: world as a cis woman that like getting to be
- 9:48Speaker 4: that sort of like embody that like super bro-y energy
- 9:52Speaker 4: is feels like affirming for a part of myself that
- 9:55Speaker 4: I think doesn't get as much airtime. And not that
- 9:58Speaker 4: I feel like I'm pushing it down. Like, I think
- 10:00Speaker 4: I dress however I want to dress on any given day,
- 10:03Speaker 4: but I think being able to go and turn that
- 10:06Speaker 4: up to 11 feels like it excites a part of me.
- 10:11Speaker 4: There is definitely something I think that people are really
- 10:13Speaker 4: drawn to I think about this with somebody like Cruella
- 10:17Speaker 4: de Vil a lot, which is like a really common
- 10:19Speaker 4: Halloween costume. And I don't necessarily know until like the
- 10:22Speaker 4: recent reboot that she's somebody that anybody really admired, but
- 10:25Speaker 4: there's also a sort of delicious wickedness that the spooky
- 10:30Speaker 4: season gives us the right to like tap into without
- 10:35Speaker 4: actually needing to be like a bad person. And also
- 10:39Speaker 4: Cruella de Vil, I think is a great example of an, of,
- 10:42Speaker 4: of a good Halloween costume because it doesn't take very
- 10:45Speaker 4: much effort to nail that costume. Like if you get
- 10:49Speaker 4: a little bit of black and white hairspray and a
- 10:51Speaker 4: fake fur jacket, you're more than halfway there.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it sounds like when people are thinking
- 10:59Speaker 3: about a costume and a character that they want to be,
- 11:02Speaker 3: it's an opportunity possibly to say, who would I really
- 11:07Speaker 3: be excited to play pretend as? It could be someone
- 11:12Speaker 3: you admire, but it could also be someone who's just
- 11:15Speaker 3: kind of bad and you just want to feel kind
- 11:17Speaker 3: of bad today and let yourself or maybe you go,
- 11:21Speaker 3: you know, maybe you go with that person, just someone
- 11:23Speaker 3: who has an element that you're seeking.
- 11:25Speaker 4: I love that. I love that.
- 11:28Speaker 3: We'll have more Life Kit after the break.
- 11:32Speaker 10: Midlife brings a lot of changes. Your Turn with Alison
- 11:35Speaker 10: Aubrey is a new podcast to help you navigate the
- 11:38Speaker 10: twists and turns. From health and relationships to creativity and purpose,
- 11:42Speaker 10: we can help steer your next chapter. With your turn

- 11:48Speaker 10: wherever you get your podcasts.
- 11:55Speaker 8: On the latest episode of Sources and Methods, France inflames
- 11:58Speaker 8: the far right on the rise across Europe, all while
- 12:01Speaker 8: the United States backs away from Ukraine. President Trump has
- 12:05Speaker 8: been trying to smash the post-World War II order since
- 12:08Speaker 8: his first term.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Is he finally succeeding?
- 12:11Speaker 8: We unpack it all on Sources and Methods, the national
- 12:14Speaker 8: security podcast from NPR.
- 12:19Speaker 3: So if you don't have a character in mind or
- 12:22Speaker 3: like somebody is not, it's just not happening for you. Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 3: I mean, it sounds like you could consider.
- 12:29Speaker 11: An apple or a baked potato, food objects, household items.
- 12:34Speaker 11: But then there are also like classic costumes, you know, ghost, witch, vampire, pumpkin.
- 12:41Speaker 11: And I imagine there are some fun little variations on that, too,
- 12:45Speaker 11: that you could do.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Totally. Like, I mean, you know, there's lots of good
- 12:49Speaker 4: pun costumes. You know, you can be a witch, but
- 12:52Speaker 4: you can cover yourself in sandwich bags and you can
- 12:54Speaker 4: be like a sandwich. I do think if you're like
- 12:59Speaker 4: really at a loss, look at what you already have.
- 13:03Speaker 4: And remember, you don't need to be like a character
- 13:05Speaker 4: from a thing. Like you can be a teacher. You
- 13:09Speaker 4: can be, I don't know, like a... Cowgirl. Cowgirl.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Like.
- 13:14Speaker 4: you know, everybody's closet has different things that lend themselves
- 13:17Speaker 4: to certain costumes, but like each item of clothing says
- 13:21Speaker 4: a little something and it arose in a cultural context, right?
- 13:26Speaker 4: Is it something that's masculine or feminine on that sort
- 13:28Speaker 4: of spectrum? Is it something that's fancy or casual? Is
- 13:33Speaker 4: it part of a uniform? Is it professional?
- 13:35Speaker 3: Is it.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Athletic, like we instinctively recognize all of these traits in
- 13:42Speaker 4: our clothes, whether or not we like articulate that to ourselves.
- 13:46Speaker 4: And I think Halloween is a really good opportunity to go, oh, well,
- 13:49Speaker 4: if I have a bunch of workout clothes, then maybe
- 13:52Speaker 4: I make a little headset out of tinfoil and I'm,
- 13:55Speaker 4: I don't know, like a soul cycle instructor. If that's
- 13:57Speaker 4: what you have, that's fine.
- 13:59Speaker 3: I actually was thinking this year in terms of like,
- 14:01Speaker 3: something you already have. I was walking past my closet.
- 14:04Speaker 3: I had this lavender jumpsuit that's really flowy. And I
- 14:08Speaker 3: was like, what if I was a one-eyed, one-horned, flying
- 14:11Speaker 3: purple people eater?
- 14:13Speaker 11: Yes.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Yes. Nobody's ever that.
- 14:17Speaker 3: No.
- 14:17Speaker 4: And yet everybody knows what that is.
- 14:20Speaker 3: But the only thing is with the one eye, like,
- 14:23Speaker 3: do I just cover one of my eyes or like,
- 14:26Speaker 3: because I still need to be able to see when
- 14:28Speaker 3: I'm walking around. Like, I got to think about that.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Maybe I could just put like another eye in the
- 14:33Speaker 3: middle of my forehead.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I was going to say. I think
- 14:36Speaker 4: makeup is always overlooked as a huge and relatively like
- 14:43Speaker 4: non-wasteful way to access, you know, a character. And you
- 14:49Speaker 4: could even take like little Barbie dolls or something and
- 14:51Speaker 4: like tie them around you like you're uncover them in
- 14:55Speaker 4: like red paint or something like you're eating them.
- 14:59Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:00Speaker 3: The way we're talking about doing this is very sustainable
- 15:02Speaker 3: because it's using stuff you have in your closet and
- 15:05Speaker 3: then maybe some makeup and some construction paper. What about
- 15:10Speaker 3: if you want to buy a costume or buy elements
- 15:14Speaker 3: of a costume?
- 15:15Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Where can you start? I mean, thrift stores?
- 15:20Speaker 4: So yeah, I feel like I have an order of
- 15:23Speaker 4: operations for like if you're gonna buy stuff what's the
- 15:26Speaker 4: order that you try to buy stuff in so it's
- 15:28Speaker 4: like the first and best option is like just using
- 15:31Speaker 4: what you have and getting a little crafty the second
- 15:34Speaker 4: step that I think a lot of people forget about
- 15:35Speaker 4: is borrowing stuff from friends whether that's whole whole items
- 15:40Speaker 4: of clothing or accessories that we all have friends who
- 15:43Speaker 4: have slightly different style than we do we always have
- 15:45Speaker 4: that friend I'm this friend as a stylist where people
- 15:49Speaker 4: always come to me to borrow stuff because I have
- 15:51Speaker 4: a little of everything and And going to a friend
- 15:55Speaker 4: and saying, hey, do you have a cowboy hat I
- 15:56Speaker 4: can borrow? Do you have a bolo tie I can borrow?
- 15:59Speaker 4: Do you have like silver disco earrings? Do you have a,
- 16:03Speaker 4: you know, sparkly top? Then I would say buying secondhand accessories,
- 16:11Speaker 4: buying secondhand clothes. So like regular clothes that you could
- 16:15Speaker 4: see yourself wearing and integrating into your wardrobe outside of Halloween.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Then I would say... this is maybe controversial, but I
- 16:26Speaker 4: would honestly say buy new real clothes before you buy
- 16:32Speaker 4: a second hand costume, which is like those costumes you
- 16:36Speaker 4: get at like spirit Halloween or on Amazon or whatever
- 16:39Speaker 4: that are like come in a little plastic bag. And
- 16:41Speaker 4: it's like, you put it on and it's like a
- 16:42Speaker 4: snow white dress or whatever. That's like, If you're going
- 16:46Speaker 4: to buy those at all, those are very low on
- 16:47Speaker 4: my list. You really like, there are so many of
- 16:50Speaker 4: those secondhand. I cannot tell you how many are available
- 16:53Speaker 4: secondhand because nobody keeps them because nobody wears them more
- 16:55Speaker 4: than once. And the absolute last, last, last thing you
- 16:59Speaker 4: should do is buy a new packaged costume.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Okay, do you have any other thoughts, anything I forgot
- 17:06Speaker 3: to ask you?
- 17:07Speaker 4: A lot of times sustainability and having fun are sort
- 17:13Speaker 4: of positioned as diametrically opposed.
- 17:15Speaker 3: I think that's sort of a.
- 17:17Speaker 4: Myth and that if you can give yourself permission to
- 17:21Speaker 4: not necessarily do everything perfectly, any of it, the sustainability perfectly,
- 17:25Speaker 4: the costume perfectly, and like let it really be about
- 17:27Speaker 4: the spirit of the thing, which is like having fun
- 17:30Speaker 4: and getting outside of yourself, connecting with your family, connecting
- 17:34Speaker 4: with like your inner child, that doing things sustainably actually
- 17:39Speaker 4: facilitates that fun because it gives you a little bit
- 17:42Speaker 4: of space to be creative, to be thrifty, to connect
- 17:46Speaker 4: with the people around you when you're asking to borrow
- 17:49Speaker 4: something or you're making something. And that doing things in
- 17:52Speaker 4: that way is part of the spirit. It's not antithetical
- 17:57Speaker 4: to the spirit of Halloween.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Okay, last question.
- 18:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:00Speaker 3: What is your favorite Halloween candy?
- 18:03Speaker 4: Ooh, probably 100 Grand, which is like, is that a
- 18:08Speaker 4: weird one?
- 18:09Speaker 3: Yeah, that one, I wasn't expecting it.
- 18:13Speaker 4: They're so good.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Sophie, thank you so much. This has been lovely.
- 18:18Speaker 4: Thanks for having me. This was so much fun.
- 18:21Speaker 3: My favorite, by the way, is Twix. And then just
- 18:23Speaker 3: behind that, Mounds and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups in a
- 18:27Speaker 3: dead heat. With that, it's time for a recap. When
- 18:31Speaker 3: you're choosing a Halloween costume, think about what kind of
- 18:34Speaker 3: Halloween person you are and be honest with yourself. Are
- 18:37Speaker 3: you really going to go all out with your costume
- 18:40Speaker 3: or are you on the opposite extreme where you just
- 18:42Speaker 3: want to wear a pair of cat ears and call
- 18:44Speaker 3: it a day? To spark ideas, you could think about
- 18:47Speaker 3: recent pop culture trends, right? Shows, movies, trending topics. If
- 18:52Speaker 3: none of that appeals, think about a character who you
- 18:54Speaker 3: admire or just think is kind of dangerous. Someone whose
- 18:57Speaker 3: energy you'd like to embrace for an evening. You can
- 19:00Speaker 3: also look through your closet. Do you have any items
- 19:02Speaker 3: of clothing that might lend themselves to a costume? I
- 19:05Speaker 3: have a denim jumpsuit and one year I wore that
- 19:08Speaker 3: with a red bandana and red lipstick and I was
- 19:11Speaker 3: Rosie the Riveter. Consider being a random household object. I
- 19:15Speaker 3: saw a video on Instagram of this really cute girl
- 19:18Speaker 3: dressed up as a washing machine. If you're going to
- 19:20Speaker 3: buy a costume, try going to a thrift store first
- 19:22Speaker 3: instead of buying something new. Or see if your friends
- 19:25Speaker 3: have any old costumes or accessories that they can lend you. Lastly,
- 19:29Speaker 3: Remember to have fun and make a little mischief. This
