- 0:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: M. This is episode five, the final episode of our
- 0:06miniseries, Food Isn't a Prescription Pad. Today
- 0:10we're going to make sense of the madness of diet
- 0:12and cancer. You've probably heard it all. Green
- 0:15tea, broccoli, soursop, apricot pits, and even
- 0:18coffee enemas from Mexico, all sold as nature's
- 0:22chemotherapy. Here's the truth. The Mediterranean
- 0:25diet is associated with a lower risk of cancer.
- 0:28>> Dr. Terry Simpson: And.
- 0:28>> Dr. Terry Simpson: And if you already have cancer, following that
- 0:31diet lowers the risk of recurrence. That's
- 0:34powerful, but it's not medicine. Food lowers risk.
- 0:38Medicine treats disease.
- 0:40And that's where we begin today's episode. I am
- 0:47your Chief Medical Explanationist, Dr. Terri
- 0:49Simpson, and this is Fork U Fork University, where
- 0:53we bust a few myths, make sense of the madness,
- 0:56and teach you a little bit about food and
- 0:58medicine. People love the idea that food is
- 1:04medicine. It feels safe, it feels natural, it
- 1:07feels empowering. But here's the truth. Food is
- 1:11not chemotherapy. Food is powerful. It can lower
- 1:14your risk of cancer. It can support healing. But
- 1:17once cancer starts, food cannot replace treatment.
- 1:20Broccoli won't shrink tumors. Green tea won't cure
- 1:23the disease, and apricot pits are coffee. Enemas
- 1:26will not save you. Let's dig into what food can
- 1:30and cannot do. Let's start with broccoli or the
- 1:33whole group of cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli,
- 1:36cabbage, Brussels sprouts, they all contain a
- 1:38compound like sulforaphane, and that, in the lab,
- 1:42slows cancer cell growth. And yes, people who eat
- 1:46more cruciferous vegetables often have lower rates
- 1:48of colon, lung, and breast cancer. That's
- 1:51prevention, but it is not cure. Don't mistake the
- 1:55two. There's not an oncologist in the world that
- 1:57will tell patients to skip chemotherapy and eat
- 2:00broccoli. Cancer doesn't work that way. Now let's
- 2:04talk about green tea. Green tea is loaded with
- 2:06certain chemicals, one called egcg. In test tubes,
- 2:10EGCG slows cancer growth. In some population
- 2:14studies, people who drink green tea regularly have
- 2:17lower rates of. Of certain cancers. That sounds
- 2:20good, right? But here's the catch. The effect is
- 2:24modest, and it's prevention only. Once cancer
- 2:28begins, green tea won't treat it. And in the
- 2:32supplement form green tea extracts it can actually
- 2:36cause liver damage. Last thing you want to do if
- 2:40you have cancer is they'll damage your liver. So
- 2:43green tea is fine as a drink, but let's not
- 2:46confuse it with medicine. And to be honest, I
- 2:49prefer black tea. Green tea tastes like pond water
- 2:52to me.
- 2:53Let's talk about scam supplements and Gearson
- 2:56therapy. This is where grifters step in. They will
- 3:00sell you broccoli pills, green tea capsules, or
- 3:03apricot pits. They call them nature's chemo.
- 3:06They're not nature's chemo. First, let's start
- 3:09with the Gearson therapy, which is still sold in
- 3:12Mexico. It claims to cure cancer with organic
- 3:15juices, supplements and multiple coffee enemas a
- 3:18day. And people are told to avoid chemo. There is
- 3:22zero credible evidence this works. Coffee enemas
- 3:25can only cause infections, electrolyte problems,
- 3:27and even death. And the biggest danger? Delaying
- 3:30real treatment while chasing false hope. Yes,
- 3:33coffee enemas. I remember when the old joke about
- 3:37the person getting the coffee in them and saying,
- 3:38oh my God, no, no. And the person said,
- 3:41administering. And said, what? Too hot? Said, no,
- 3:43too sweet. Anyway, scams don't end there. Soursop
- 3:48called Graviola is pitched as a cancer killer in a
- 3:51petri dish. Maybe in humans. No, worse. It has
- 3:56been linked with neurologic disease that mimics
- 3:59Parkinson's. Ivermectin, a drug for parasites, has
- 4:03been sold as a cancer cure. It might be
- 4:05interesting in lab studies, but it is useless in
- 4:08human trials. Yes, human trials. It's useless.
- 4:12Taking Ivermectin instead of proven therapy will
- 4:16cost lives. And then there's those people who talk
- 4:20about the Warburg effect. Otto Warburg was a Nobel
- 4:23prize winning scientist. He noticed that cancer
- 4:27cells often use sugar for fuel, even when oxygen
- 4:30is present. It's a true observation, but modern
- 4:33gurus twist it, saying that sugar feeds cancer. So
- 4:37cut out carbs and cure it. Here's the reality.
- 4:41Cancer is not a metabolic disorder. It is a DNA
- 4:45disorder. It is a disease of mutation. And cancer
- 4:49cells are not picky eaters. Not only will cancer
- 4:52cells consume sugar, but they'll also consume
- 4:55ketones and they will thrive on vitamins. You
- 4:58cannot starve cancer with diet. Warburg gave us
- 5:02some clues, but science has moved on. Cancer is
- 5:05not cured with the keto diet. And multiple studies
- 5:09have shown this. And here's the final tragedy of
- 5:12this. I have seen people tell the parents that
- 5:15they shouldn't have their child eat fast food
- 5:18while they're undergoing chemotherapy. Do you know
- 5:21what? When kids are undergoing chemotherapy, we
- 5:24just want to get calories in them. We want the
- 5:27kids to survive. So if you are not their parent or
- 5:31their doctor, stop spreading misinformation.
- 5:36People who are undergoing cancer chemotherapy
- 5:39sometimes just need calories. And I don't care if
- 5:41they're eating ice cream or pizza or anything.
- 5:44It's their time. Leave them alone. Stop
- 5:47moralizing. You're not a doctor. And people have
- 5:51often asked me, if we've landed on the moon, why
- 5:53can't we cure cancer? The truth is, we have cured
- 5:56some and we have transformed others. Childhood
- 5:59leukemia used to be almost universally fatal, and
- 6:02now most kids survive Hodgkin's disease. My
- 6:07brother Jimmy was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease
- 6:10in 1969. It was universally fatal. At that time.
- 6:15He was saved by an experimental protocol of
- 6:18chemotherapy and radiation and lived 37 more
- 6:21years. Sadly, my brother eventually died of lung
- 6:24cancer in 2006. But the Hodgkins didn't kill him.
- 6:28By the way, my son jj, named after my brother
- 6:31Jimmy.
- 6:33Let's talk about hairy cell leukemia. Once it was
- 6:36untreatable, universally fatal. Today it is cured.
- 6:41One of my biology professors when I was a student
- 6:44at the University of Chicago, died of hairy cell
- 6:47leukemia. I remember seeing him in the hospital
- 6:49and visiting with him, and he told me, hey, Terry,
- 6:52if you ever get something, I hope you don't get
- 6:54something weird like I have. Get something that's
- 6:56treatable, like pneumonia today, if he were to
- 7:00have it, if he were to be alive and got hairy cell
- 7:02leukemia, he would survive. I had pneumonia, by
- 7:05the way, wasn't fun. But breast cancer caught
- 7:08early is often cured. In the past, breast cancer
- 7:12wasn't caught early, and often it became fatal.
- 7:15Colon cancer. A colonoscopy can remove it before
- 7:18it even spreads. Lung cancer now has targeted
- 7:21therapies and immunotherapies that can save lives.
- 7:24So, yes, cancer deaths are going down, recurrences
- 7:28are going down, and that is progress. There is no
- 7:31one single cancer that we cure. There are multiple
- 7:35diseases. When my brother was treated,
- 7:38chemotherapy was like carpet bombing. It was
- 7:41brutal on him, but it was effective. Today, modern
- 7:45therapy is far more precise. We now have immune
- 7:48checkpoint inhibitors, medicines that let your
- 7:50immune system recognize and fight cancer. We have
- 7:53targeted therapies that hit the exact genetic
- 7:56mutation driving a tumor. Our outcomes are better,
- 7:58and side effects are often easier. And here's some
- 8:01of the exciting part in vaccines, take the HPV
- 8:05vaccine. That's been around for a while, like
- 8:07Gardasil. My son JJ has been vaccinated with
- 8:10Gardasil. Now, while he's not going to ever get
- 8:13cervical cancer, it does prevent the spread of
- 8:16human papillomavirus that has been linked to oral
- 8:18cancers, anal cancers, and now studies suggest it
- 8:22may even reduce melanoma risk because melanoma may
- 8:25have ties to hpv. Human papillomavirus and the
- 8:30pipeline is growing. Research are working on
- 8:32vaccines against glioblastoma, the deadly brain
- 8:35cancer that killed John McCain, that killed Edward
- 8:39Kennedy, and even killed some friends of mine.
- 8:42Here's the thing. They have now had patients with
- 8:45glioblastoma that they have pulled out a biopsy
- 8:48of, made a vaccine against, and they are saved.
- 8:50Others have developed vaccine cancer strategies
- 8:53against pancreatic cancers, one of the hardest
- 8:55cancers to treat. So no, apricot pits didn't do
- 8:58it. Peach pits didn't do it. No powder in a bottle
- 9:01can do that. Only modern medicine.
- 9:05Now back to food. The Mediterranean diet. It
- 9:08doesn't just lower the risk of getting cancer, it
- 9:12lowers the risk of cancer coming back. A, uh,
- 9:15massive epic study in Europe found that patients
- 9:17who followed this diet had fewer cancer
- 9:20recurrences and they lived longer if they had
- 9:23cancer. Yep. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole
- 9:27grains, olive oil and fish. The pattern is clear.
- 9:29But let's be very clear. The Mediterranean diet
- 9:33empowers you, but it's not chemotherapy. It lowers
- 9:36risk. It does not replace treatment. And another
- 9:40food story. Colon cancer in young adults is
- 9:43rising. Why? Diet is a likely reason. Low fiber
- 9:48diets leave the colon vulnerable. Fiber feeds gut
- 9:52microbiomes that help sweep out waste and provide
- 9:56anticarcinogenic targets to prevent colon cancer
- 10:00from even arising. For example, fiber feeds some
- 10:04of the gut microbiome that releases a substance
- 10:07called butyrate, which is a tonic to the colon,
- 10:09which prevents colon cancer. At the same time,
- 10:12ultra processed food, the sugary, starchy fatty
- 10:16filled with additives, has crowded out real food
- 10:18among younger people. And that shift may be
- 10:21fueling the rise of cancer among younger adults.
- 10:25So, yes, fiber matters. And so does cutting back
- 10:29on ultra processed foods. The bottom line,
- 10:33broccoli and green tea are healthy. The
- 10:34Mediterranean diet is the best diet. Fiber
- 10:37matters. But none of these are chemotherapy. Food
- 10:41is food. Medicine is medicine. And together, they
- 10:45protect us. But only medicine treats disease. This
- 10:55has been our final episode in food isn't a
- 10:57prescription pad. I hope you have enjoyed this.

- 11:31A board certified doctor and a registered
- 11:34dietitian. Before making changes to your health,
- 11:36there are some diets that you should not be eating
- 11:38certain things on. All right, everybody, have a
- 11:41good week. Please don't drink the green tea if you
- 11:43don't want to. I'm just having cold black tea.
- 11:46Have a good day, everybody. Hey, Evo. I'm just not
- 11:58gonna eat the broccoli, but I will drink my black
- 12:00tea, because I'm gonna skip that pond water
- 12:02tasting stuff. So if I get cancer, I'm calling an
- 12:05oncologist, um, not some guy from Mexico. So tell
- 12:08me, Ivo, broccoli, black tea, or green tea? What's
- 12:12your pick?
- 12:15>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Hey, I like broccoli. I like green tea, I like
- 12:18black tea. Come on, man. Everything in moderation,
- 12:22including moderation.
