Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Trade Deadline updates, Red Sox & O's STREAKING, Ohtani injury means a real MVP race?
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone in to the Monday edition of Fair Territory.
- 0:04Speaker 1: I'm Ken Rosenthal here with you for the next half
- 0:06Speaker 1: hour or so. I know Red Sox fans want me
- 0:09Speaker 1: to get to the Red Sox. I know Orioles fans
- 0:12Speaker 1: want me to get to the Orioles, and we will
- 0:14Speaker 1: do that. But first we're going to start with the
- 0:16Speaker 1: biggest news of the weekend, and that was the news
- 0:19Speaker 1: that Shohey Otani will not pitch for quote some time unquote,
- 0:25Speaker 1: according to his manager Dave Roberts. Now this is big
- 0:28Speaker 1: news in any number of ways. Otani obviously is going
- 0:32Speaker 1: to continue to hit. We now know that when he
- 0:34Speaker 1: skipped the All Star Game, it wasn't just I'm gonna
- 0:37Speaker 1: take a couple of days off. No, he has a
- 0:40Speaker 1: legitimate issue with that knee and it is causing him
- 0:45Speaker 1: to not be able to pitch or at least be
- 0:48Speaker 1: comfortable with his mechanics the way he normally would be.
- 0:51Speaker 1: So he is out of the rotation for now. What
- 0:55Speaker 1: this does to the Dodgers is interesting because you could
- 0:59Speaker 1: argue that they're already set with their rotation. I want
- 1:02Speaker 1: to show you where they are with that rotation. But
- 1:05Speaker 1: you can also argue that maybe they would need a starter,
- 1:09Speaker 1: and I'm not talking about necessarily Trek Skruble. I'm talking
- 1:13Speaker 1: about just a depth starter. But i want to show
- 1:15Speaker 1: you just where they are right now. Okay, So here
- 1:18Speaker 1: are the healthy starters. Yamamoto, Robleski, both of those guys
- 1:22Speaker 1: all stars. Sasaki brilliant start against the Yankees on Friday night,
- 1:27Speaker 1: Emma Sheen who has had good moments, and Eric Lawer
- 1:30Speaker 1: who has been really good since coming over from the
- 1:32Speaker 1: Blue Jays. Joey Otani, he's injured in the pitching sense, obviously,
- 1:38Speaker 1: he is still continuing to hit. Then you've got Snell,
- 1:41Speaker 1: who has started a rehabilitation assignment. He is close. And
- 1:44Speaker 1: then you've got Glass now, who is probably a few
- 1:47Speaker 1: weeks behind Snell. Now, the Dodgers have been going with
- 1:50Speaker 1: a six man rotation. They're going to continue to do that,
- 1:54Speaker 1: and what they'll do is fill in bullpen games when
- 1:57Speaker 1: they need to for that sixth spot until Snell is ready.
- 2:02Speaker 1: We saw it last night against the Yankees. They ran
- 2:04Speaker 1: a bullpen game, actually rather successfully, even though they lost
- 2:08Speaker 1: the game two to one. So that is the Dodgers
- 2:11Speaker 1: element of all this, just what it means to their team,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and with an eleven and a half game lead, they
- 2:16Speaker 1: certainly don't have to push anyone. That's the lead that
- 2:20Speaker 1: they have in the National League West. What is also
- 2:23Speaker 1: interesting about this physical setback for Otani. It's hard to
- 2:28Speaker 1: call it an injury, although I guess it is. That
- 2:31Speaker 1: is the implications for both the CY Young and MVP races. Now,
- 2:35Speaker 1: you remember we talked a lot about this season Otani
- 2:39Speaker 1: wanting to win his first CY Young. It seemed to
- 2:42Speaker 1: be a clear goal. Dave Roberts acknowledged that it was
- 2:45Speaker 1: a clear goal. Well, now it's not going to happen,
- 2:49Speaker 1: simple as that he simply doesn't have the innings. And frankly,
- 2:54Speaker 1: he wasn't necessarily going to have the innings even if
- 2:56Speaker 1: he had stayed healthy, pitching in a six man rotation,
- 2:59Speaker 1: getting extra to rest when necessary. I want to say
- 3:02Speaker 1: the National League Innings Board leader board, just to explain
- 3:06Speaker 1: what I mean here, because he is way behind even now,
- 3:10Speaker 1: all right, there's al Contra leading the league with one
- 3:13Speaker 1: hundred and thirty six and two thirds innings, Christopher Sanchez
- 3:16Speaker 1: not far behind one hundred and twenty seven and a third,
- 3:19Speaker 1: and then Yamamoto at one hundred and nineteen and two thirds.
- 3:22Speaker 1: The Mez, who is a legit cy Young candidate, is
- 3:25Speaker 1: twenty third in innings right now, actually tied for twenty
- 3:29Speaker 1: third with one hundred and eleven Otani at eighty five
- 3:32Speaker 1: and two thirds, And frankly, we don't know how much
- 3:35Speaker 1: he is going to pitch the rest of the year.
- 3:37Speaker 1: You see down below there the fewest innings pitched by
- 3:41Speaker 1: a cy Young winning starting pitcher in a full season.
- 3:45Speaker 1: That's Corbyn Burns with one hundred and sixty seven in
- 3:47Speaker 1: twenty twenty one. I had a problem with that one.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I like volume in my cy Young votes. As you've
- 3:53Speaker 1: often heard me say to me, the more innings you pitch,
- 3:56Speaker 1: the more chances you have to fail, Simply the way
- 4:00Speaker 1: it is. And yeah, your er might be higher, your
- 4:03Speaker 1: other stats might not be as good. Regardless, it's going
- 4:07Speaker 1: to affect the cy Young race. Now, the MVP race
- 4:10Speaker 1: also gets rather interesting. Now, assuming Otani doesn't pitch much
- 4:15Speaker 1: the rest of the year, and we don't know that
- 4:17Speaker 1: that's going to be the case, he might come back
- 4:19Speaker 1: and he might end up with one hundred and twenty
- 4:21Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty innings, in which case he still
- 4:24Speaker 1: have a really strong MVP case. But without him pitching,
- 4:30Speaker 1: he's not the same kind of candidate. He becomes actually
- 4:33Speaker 1: a human, mortal candidate. Pete crow Armstrong is having a
- 4:38Speaker 1: brilliant season. Now, you wouldn't have said he was even
- 4:42Speaker 1: close in the race if Otani was going to pitch
- 4:45Speaker 1: the full season. Even crow Armstrong acknowledged that. Last week.
- 4:49Speaker 1: PCA said something to the effect of, as long as
- 4:52Speaker 1: that guy is pitching, I've got no chance. Well, now
- 4:55Speaker 1: maybe the plot thickens if you look at WAR and
- 4:59Speaker 1: I know WAR is not a perfect statistic, but it
- 5:03Speaker 1: is an estimate that gives us an idea of a
- 5:06Speaker 1: player's all around value. You look at WAR and we'll
- 5:10Speaker 1: show you here what I'm talking about. F UR and
- 5:12Speaker 1: b WAR. Those are two of the leading ones in
- 5:15Speaker 1: f WAR right now, and these are Otani's combined stats
- 5:18Speaker 1: pitching and hitting. He's at six point one to crow
- 5:21Speaker 1: Armstrong's five point nine b WAR. It's even closer five
- 5:25Speaker 1: point eight to five point seven. Does PCA have a chance?
- 5:29Speaker 1: I would say now, yes, he has a chance, and
- 5:32Speaker 1: I would not have said that before. So again, it
- 5:35Speaker 1: all depends upon when Otani pitches again. If he and
- 5:39Speaker 1: PCA continue to perform at high levels in PCA's case,
- 5:43Speaker 1: both offensively and defensively. So there you have it, the
- 5:47Speaker 1: Otani multi layered discussion that is quite fascinating and of
- 5:52Speaker 1: course is something that the Dodgers will be monitoring with
- 5:56Speaker 1: him as far as his workload and his health all
- 5:59Speaker 1: season long.

- 7:01Speaker 1: To the American League and to the two hottest teams
- 7:04Speaker 1: in baseball right now, the Boston Red Sox. First winning
- 7:08Speaker 1: streak by the Red Sox since I'm sorry, first thirteen
- 7:12Speaker 1: game winning streak by the Red Sox since nineteen forty eight.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I'm so excited for them, I can barely get my
- 7:18Speaker 1: words out. First thirteen game winning streak by a Boston
- 7:21Speaker 1: team since nineteen forty eight, the days of Ted Williams,
- 7:25Speaker 1: the Orioles, a seven game winning streak, and they two
- 7:29Speaker 1: are quite interesting right now. And these teams actually are
- 7:33Speaker 1: going to meet in Boston. That is their next series,
- 7:36Speaker 1: and that is going to be something where one of
- 7:38Speaker 1: these teams at least has to lose. Now. The Red
- 7:41Speaker 1: Sox coming off that four game sweep of Tampa Bay
- 7:44Speaker 1: right out of the break. That is now four straight
- 7:48Speaker 1: series sweeps. They are eighteen and two in their last
- 7:51Speaker 1: twenty Are they a really good team? I don't believe
- 7:55Speaker 1: that they are necessarily, but we're talking about the race
- 7:58Speaker 1: of the Turtles, the American League and the Red Sox.
- 8:02Speaker 1: What they have that most teams do not, and they've
- 8:04Speaker 1: had this all season is pitching, particularly starting pitching. Even
- 8:09Speaker 1: without Crochet, even without Rangers Suarez, who is on the
- 8:12Speaker 1: IL right now, they continue to pitch at a high level.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Their offense has been better during the streak quite obviously.
- 8:19Speaker 1: That is why they are winning games. So good for
- 8:22Speaker 1: the Red Sox. Now they have the Orioles and the
- 8:24Speaker 1: Blue Jays to complete this homestand I don't know that
- 8:27Speaker 1: they're going to establish any gap in this wildcard race.
- 8:31Speaker 1: You see it right there. They are in the third
- 8:32Speaker 1: spot right now, but they are now positioned to be
- 8:36Speaker 1: a buyer at the deadline. The Orioles also interesting now.
- 8:40Speaker 1: The Oriols are still two games below five hundred. They
- 8:43Speaker 1: had some physical concerns arise on Sunday when Adlie Rushman
- 8:48Speaker 1: did not play due to left risk and discomfort, and
- 8:51Speaker 1: then Samuel Bassaio had to leave the game due to
- 8:54Speaker 1: right shoulder discomfort. Basio Rushman, those are two of their
- 8:58Speaker 1: best players and if they're not available going forward in
- 9:02Speaker 1: any fashion, that's going to be a problem for them,
- 9:05Speaker 1: but they too quietly have pitched really well over their
- 9:10Speaker 1: improvement the last few weeks predates this streak. They've gotten
- 9:15Speaker 1: great work out of young Bratish, Trevor Rodgers. They are
- 9:19Speaker 1: really right now an impressive looking team in terms of
- 9:23Speaker 1: the way they're going about it from the rotation standpoint.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Can they keep it up well, it's going to depend
- 9:28Speaker 1: on health. It's going to depend on them playing a
- 9:30Speaker 1: cleaner brand of baseball. We've talked at length about this,
- 9:34Speaker 1: but they've got some good things happening, and certainly the
- 9:37Speaker 1: extension that Bratish signed on Saturday five years, ninety million,
- 9:41Speaker 1: and that's a good thing too. So here are the
- 9:44Speaker 1: Orioles and Red Sox pretty interesting? What's going on with them?
- 9:48Speaker 1: They're going to meet right now and we'll be talking
- 9:51Speaker 1: about them a lot more in a positive sense, it
- 9:54Speaker 1: seems than we have all season long time. Now for
- 10:04Speaker 1: the inside dish, we're going to talk a little deadline
- 10:06Speaker 1: and why not. Twenty three of the thirty teams are
- 10:10Speaker 1: within four and a half games of a wildcard spot,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and we've discussed this on shows on FT. What is
- 10:17Speaker 1: going to happen? Here are we going to have some
- 10:20Speaker 1: definition before the August third trade deadline, more delineation between
- 10:25Speaker 1: the buyers and the sellers. I'm not sure we're going
- 10:28Speaker 1: to get there, because these teams are not good enough
- 10:31Speaker 1: necessarily to separate themselves from others. But that said, some
- 10:36Speaker 1: things are starting to percolate. We've written about quite a
- 10:39Speaker 1: few of them in The Athletic in recent days, and
- 10:41Speaker 1: we'll go through a few of them. Now, let's start
- 10:44Speaker 1: with the Mets. Let's start with Francisco Lindor. This has
- 10:48Speaker 1: been the talk, certainly in New York for quite some
- 10:50Speaker 1: time now, and it's certainly the talk nationally as well.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Will the Mets trade Francisco Lindor? I laid this out,
- 10:59Speaker 1: or actually will sound I'm laid it out. He wrote
- 11:01Speaker 1: the story. I helped him with the story the other day.
- 11:03Speaker 1: And it's going to be a situation where, yes, they're
- 11:06Speaker 1: going to listen. Of course they're going to listen. They're
- 11:08Speaker 1: a horrible team. They're going to listen on pretty much everyone.
- 11:11Speaker 1: But the chances of a trade at mid season are unlikely,
- 11:16Speaker 1: and the reasons for that are many. First of all,
- 11:19Speaker 1: the Mets still view Lindor as a valuable player for
- 11:22Speaker 1: them going forward kind of a stalwart along with Juan Soto.
- 11:26Speaker 1: This team should be built around two potential Hall of
- 11:29Speaker 1: Fame players Lindor and Sodo. So they're not going to
- 11:32Speaker 1: give him away. They're not going to pay down his contract,
- 11:35Speaker 1: and he's owed one hundred and sixty million more than
- 11:38Speaker 1: that through twenty thirty one, that's after this year. It's
- 11:42Speaker 1: not like Verlander and schurz Are a few years back,
- 11:44Speaker 1: where they paid a lot of money to get rid
- 11:46Speaker 1: of those guys. The Mets do not intend to do
- 11:49Speaker 1: that with Lindor, and because he's owed a lot of money,
- 11:52Speaker 1: because they still view him as valuable, because he has
- 11:55Speaker 1: not performed this year in large for the injuries he's suffered,
- 12:00Speaker 1: his value right now is not great. He also enjoys
- 12:03Speaker 1: full no trade protection as a player with ten years
- 12:07Speaker 1: of major league service, five consecutive with the same club.
- 12:10Speaker 1: So if you're going to trade Lindor, and certainly doesn't
- 12:13Speaker 1: seem that the Mets are motivated to do that, you're
- 12:16Speaker 1: probably going to do it in the off season. As
- 12:18Speaker 1: I've said many times before, it's easier to trade a
- 12:21Speaker 1: position player in the off season when teams are more
- 12:25Speaker 1: flexible with their rosters, they can move pieces around easier,
- 12:28Speaker 1: they can trade other players. They can still do that
- 12:31Speaker 1: at the deadline, it just gets more complicated, particularly if
- 12:35Speaker 1: you're a contending club. So with Lindor, it's going to
- 12:39Speaker 1: be interesting to see number one, how he plays the
- 12:42Speaker 1: rest of the season, because that's as I said, Remember,
- 12:45Speaker 1: you had the hammade injury that cost him spring training,
- 12:48Speaker 1: didn't have a spring training. Then he had the calf injury,
- 12:51Speaker 1: which for a shortstop, of course, is going to be problematic.
- 12:55Speaker 1: So let's see if he finally figures it out. He
- 12:58Speaker 1: had a big day Sunday off and if he gets rolling,
- 13:02Speaker 1: then the question becomes number two, can he coexist with
- 13:07Speaker 1: Juan Soto? The Mets insist the answer is yes. But
- 13:10Speaker 1: of course the Mets insisted there was no problem last year,
- 13:14Speaker 1: only to hit have Steve Cohen, the owner, come out
- 13:16Speaker 1: and say recently to Joel Sherman and John Hayman on
- 13:20Speaker 1: the New York Post podcast that yes, there was a
- 13:23Speaker 1: problem last year, but it's all better now. So the
- 13:26Speaker 1: questions around Lindor will continue to swirl until he proves
- 13:31Speaker 1: he is the player he once was. And he does
- 13:33Speaker 1: turn thirty three next season and until he proves again
- 13:37Speaker 1: that he can coexist with Soto. All right, So that's
- 13:39Speaker 1: the Mets. They've got relievers to trade, aj Minter and
- 13:43Speaker 1: Brooks Rally, They've got Freddie Peralta. They've got a number
- 13:46Speaker 1: of other people that are going to draw interest. Clay Holmes,
- 13:50Speaker 1: of course, is going to be one of them. He
- 13:52Speaker 1: also could sign an extension. Francisco Alvarez. Will Salmon has
- 13:55Speaker 1: written about him. He could also be someone that they
- 13:58Speaker 1: talk about. Number of others, including the best right handed believers,
- 14:03Speaker 1: Luke Weaver and Huascar Brazaban. The Rets the Reds, not
- 14:08Speaker 1: the Rets. There was no team called the Rets. The
- 14:11Speaker 1: Cincinnati Reds. They are a more obvious seller, and I
- 14:15Speaker 1: reported with Trent Rosecrans over the weekend that they are
- 14:19Speaker 1: open for business now. They're focused mostly on their rentals.
- 14:23Speaker 1: They've got quite a few. But the interesting thing about
- 14:26Speaker 1: the Reds and Trent learning this and talking to some
- 14:28Speaker 1: of their people, is that they are open also to
- 14:32Speaker 1: adding controllable players the way they did two previous times
- 14:36Speaker 1: when they were sellers. Two thousand and nine they brought
- 14:39Speaker 1: in future Hall of famers Scott Rowland. That was a
- 14:41Speaker 1: year they were selling twenty nineteen, they brought in future
- 14:45Speaker 1: Sy Young winner Trevor Bauer. Same kind of situation. So
- 14:49Speaker 1: while the Reds can talk about Brady Singer, who's been
- 14:51Speaker 1: really hot of late two point sixty four era in
- 14:55Speaker 1: his last eight starts, and they can talk about other
- 14:57Speaker 1: rentals as well, Aohanris, Nathaniel Lowe, Tyler Stevenson, and maybe
- 15:03Speaker 1: even they can talk about some of their starting pitchers
- 15:06Speaker 1: under Control Lodolo, maybe even Hunter Green. They're gonna be
- 15:10Speaker 1: focused on the rentals. They're gonna be focused on trying
- 15:12Speaker 1: to get better. They've got other pieces people want, Spencer Steer,
- 15:16Speaker 1: JJ Bleday, But at some point you can't trade everyone.
- 15:21Speaker 1: You can't trade your entire team. You have to play
- 15:24Speaker 1: the rest of the season, the final two months, and
- 15:27Speaker 1: you have to point toward a better twenty twenty seven, if,
- 15:31Speaker 1: of course, there is going to be a twenty twenty seven.
- 15:34Speaker 1: So the Cincinnati Reds, a team that started the season
- 15:38Speaker 1: twenty and eleven, has gone twenty five and forty two since.
- 15:42Speaker 1: They've been terrible. They've been terrible in a division where
- 15:47Speaker 1: three other teams with similar resources, the Cardinals, Pirates, and Brewers,
- 15:52Speaker 1: have all had different measures of success. Those teams have
- 15:56Speaker 1: all played well. Look, every one of them is above
- 15:59Speaker 1: five hundred. The Brewer have the second best record in
- 16:01Speaker 1: the National League. So for the Reds, no excuses. They
- 16:05Speaker 1: have not had a good run here. So I would
- 16:08Speaker 1: expect with Cincinnati they're going to sell and sell pretty big.
- 16:12Speaker 1: And the really interesting aspect for them is going to
- 16:16Speaker 1: be whether they can bring in some pieces that can
- 16:18Speaker 1: help them going forward, some controllable assets, as executives call them. Finally,
- 16:24Speaker 1: I want to show you the National League wildcard standings
- 16:26Speaker 1: because we've talked a lot about the Ale wildcard. I've
- 16:29Speaker 1: called it the race of the Turtles and how kind
- 16:32Speaker 1: of it's a mediocre situation over there. The National wildcard
- 16:36Speaker 1: race is really interesting. So here you see it, the Cardinals, Marlins,
- 16:42Speaker 1: and Pirates. Right now, those three teams, the Cardinals, Marlins,
- 16:46Speaker 1: and Pirates all tied for the third wildcard spot. And
- 16:50Speaker 1: that's what the Marlins losing six straight. Okay. Then you
- 16:54Speaker 1: have the Diamondbacks, a team that I would not necessarily
- 16:57Speaker 1: have thought of as playing well this year, only a
- 17:00Speaker 1: half game back the Nationals, a team that was supposedly
- 17:03Speaker 1: rebuilding two games back in the San Diego Padres, a
- 17:07Speaker 1: Padres team that has not played well, that has looked
- 17:11Speaker 1: at times just I don't even know the right word
- 17:14Speaker 1: for it. Not all there. They are two and a
- 17:17Speaker 1: half games back. So even for all the bad things
- 17:21Speaker 1: that have happened, the Padres are right there. And given
- 17:24Speaker 1: that we may see their president of Baseball Operations, Aj Preller,
- 17:28Speaker 1: still want to sell. But I want to talk about
- 17:31Speaker 1: the Nationals here because the Nationals remain in a really
- 17:34Speaker 1: interesting spot. Story over the weekend from Will Salmon and
- 17:38Speaker 1: Spencer Nussbound detailed how they're already drawing interest in Luis
- 17:43Speaker 1: Crustia Junior. He's a guy who's played first base this
- 17:46Speaker 1: year but second base in the past, and is having,
- 17:50Speaker 1: at age twenty six, really his best season. He's only
- 17:55Speaker 1: making only baseball term six point eight seven five. That's
- 18:00Speaker 1: only in a relative sense. And he's a guy who
- 18:03Speaker 1: twenty home runs and also ranks seventh in the Major
- 18:07Speaker 1: seventh in w RC plus. That's weighted runs create a plus.
- 18:11Speaker 1: That's a statistic that gives you a good feel for
- 18:16Speaker 1: a player's overall offensive performance. Garcia is a left handed hitter.
- 18:20Speaker 1: It would be better for the Nationals if he was
- 18:22Speaker 1: right handed. But here's a guy that even if they
- 18:25Speaker 1: feel they don't want to blow up their team, while
- 18:27Speaker 1: in contention, they can trade. They've got two first basemen
- 18:31Speaker 1: of Tripa, they can do some things with him, and
- 18:34Speaker 1: he's a guy that will fit for a number of clubs.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Teams want offense, and offense is at a premium in
- 18:42Speaker 1: today's game, especially right handed hitting offense. But Luis Garcia Jr.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Is also going to be in that category as well.
- 18:49Speaker 1: So really interesting to see what the Nationals do here.
- 18:53Speaker 1: They've got some bigger pieces as well. Foster Griffin, all
- 18:57Speaker 1: star pitcher that came over from As. They signed him
- 19:01Speaker 1: to Believe a five point five million dollar deal. He's
- 19:04Speaker 1: had a remarkable season for them. They could trade him,
- 19:07Speaker 1: they could also try to extend him. And then there's
- 19:09Speaker 1: cj Abrams. Cj Abrams has had a remarkable offensive season.
- 19:14Speaker 1: He probably is not a shortstop going forward. Everyone in
- 19:17Speaker 1: the industry knows that, but he is a guy with
- 19:19Speaker 1: some value. But like Lindor, though he's not making nearly
- 19:24Speaker 1: as much money, he is more of an off season
- 19:27Speaker 1: move because if you're going to do that, you're gonna
- 19:30Speaker 1: do that at a time when you can involve the
- 19:31Speaker 1: greatest number of teams, So I don't expect them to
- 19:34Speaker 1: do anything major with Abrams. I'm not even sure they
- 19:37Speaker 1: would do that with Griffin, though certainly he would have
- 19:40Speaker 1: value the way he has performed this season. He actually
- 19:42Speaker 1: has been one of the best stories this season. So
- 19:45Speaker 1: what's going to happen in the two weeks ahead, the
- 19:49Speaker 1: two weeks leading to the deadline. The answer is I
- 19:52Speaker 1: don't know, because still we don't have answers on where
- 19:57Speaker 1: a number of teams are. I haven't even talked to
- 20:00Speaker 1: about the Detroit Tigers. Detroit Tigers, we know how well
- 20:03Speaker 1: they've played, we know that they're probably inclined to keep schooble.
- 20:08Speaker 1: But at the same time, they lose yesterday, Suddenly it's
- 20:11Speaker 1: a four and a half gap in the wildcard race.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Four and a half games, not insurmountable, but not easy either.
- 20:18Speaker 1: So if the Tigers, or the Red Sox for that matter,
- 20:21Speaker 1: or the Orioles, if these teams over the next two
- 20:25Speaker 1: weeks go south again, and certainly they're capable of annoying South.
- 20:29Speaker 1: We've seen them in the southern Southern region for most
- 20:33Speaker 1: of the season. If that happens again, then you have
- 20:36Speaker 1: a whole different equation. But right now for the Tigers,
- 20:39Speaker 1: for the Orioles, for the Red Sox, and for a
- 20:41Speaker 1: number of other teams, all but seven teams. Really contention
- 20:46Speaker 1: is on. The races are on, and they're not ready
- 20:49Speaker 1: to sell just yet. We'll be back with Grill and
- 20:52Speaker 1: Ken right after this.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Todd father, are you hitting some games this summer? What's

- 22:01Speaker 1: All right, time now for Grill and Ken the part
- 22:03Speaker 1: of the show. Right, take your questions live, let's go.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Let's get right to it here. First question, this one
- 22:10Speaker 1: comes from Ricky Schaff sixty six, who asks, why do
- 22:14Speaker 1: people say starting pitching for Milwaukee is in need? I
- 22:18Speaker 1: guess is what he's asking. I think that Miss Henderson, Harrison,
- 22:21Speaker 1: Johann Gasser, Sprote and Crow is enough. I would only
- 22:25Speaker 1: consider Paralta. Ricky. It's a good question, and you're right
- 22:30Speaker 1: people do say, and even I would say they probably
- 22:33Speaker 1: could use another starter. And the reason I say that
- 22:36Speaker 1: is with the Miz and with Harrison. With the Mis
- 22:40Speaker 1: we've seen some fatigue set in. That's why he did
- 22:43Speaker 1: not make his last start before the All Star Game.
- 22:45Speaker 1: And with Harrison we've seen an elbow issue flare up.
- 22:48Speaker 1: And some of those other pictures are young and this
- 22:51Speaker 1: is the first time that they're going through a full
- 22:53Speaker 1: major league season, so you can see the possibility for
- 22:57Speaker 1: lack of a better phrase, erosion over time with this
- 23:01Speaker 1: team over the next two months. So if you're the
- 23:04Speaker 1: Brewers and you can get someone who can give you
- 23:06Speaker 1: reliable innings what you were hoping for from Brandon Woodruff
- 23:10Speaker 1: before he was again put on the injured list needing surgery,
- 23:14Speaker 1: if you can get that guy, it would be helpful.
- 23:17Speaker 1: It would be a stabilizing factor for them. So yes,
- 23:21Speaker 1: I would expect the Brewers to still pursue starting pitching.
- 23:24Speaker 1: They've had an injury with salth Frielick over the weekend.
- 23:26Speaker 1: They can cover at now that Lara is up. They've
- 23:29Speaker 1: talked about the left side of the infield. I'm not
- 23:31Speaker 1: sure they're going to do that. Starting pitching, I imagine
- 23:35Speaker 1: would be their focus. Next question, this one comes from Mike,
- 23:39Speaker 1: who asks, can you give us a couple of names
- 23:41Speaker 1: to keep an eye on for cups pitching targets at
- 23:43Speaker 1: the deadline. Will they actually be going after playoff caliber
- 23:47Speaker 1: arms or just bolstering depth again, Well, we've seen them
- 23:50Speaker 1: bolster depth so far with their two moves David Peterson
- 23:53Speaker 1: and over the weekend. Aaron Savali Heeralta is a guy that,
- 23:57Speaker 1: of course Craig Council is familiar with from the days
- 24:00Speaker 1: in Milwaukee. He hasn't performed all that well. Clay Holmes
- 24:03Speaker 1: from the Mets would be another one. Robbie Ray. These
- 24:06Speaker 1: are the usual suspects. I guess the Cubs ideally would
- 24:10Speaker 1: probably want someone with control who wouldn't But I'm not
- 24:15Speaker 1: sure necessarily who is going to be out there that's
- 24:18Speaker 1: going to entice them because of the lack of sellers
- 24:22Speaker 1: in the market right now. There simply aren't that many
- 24:24Speaker 1: teams that are selling. Are you going to get one
- 24:27Speaker 1: of the reds pitchers? I kind of would doubt it.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Maybe Brady Singer, he is a rental he could appeal
- 24:32Speaker 1: to the Cubs. But Jed Hoyer again said over the
- 24:35Speaker 1: weekend that if they're in position to secure a bye,
- 24:39Speaker 1: that would make them more aggressive, because not only do
- 24:41Speaker 1: you get the buye, but you get a weaker opponent
- 24:43Speaker 1: in the first round, and that's something that clearly means
- 24:46Speaker 1: something to him. All right, let's take one more question
- 24:49Speaker 1: before we get out of here. This one comes from
- 24:52Speaker 1: Cowboys Inquirer seven two five nine, who asks how deep
- 24:56Speaker 1: will the Yankees dip into their farm system at the deadline?
- 25:00Speaker 1: Great question. My friend Joel Showman the New York Post
- 25:03Speaker 1: has a calumn today basically saying, this team offensively is
- 25:07Speaker 1: not there right now, and obviously with the uncertainties surrounding Judge,
- 25:12Speaker 1: you can question when they are going to be there.
- 25:15Speaker 1: The Yankees with Judge, let me give you some numbers here,
- 25:18Speaker 1: thirty six and twenty three average five point one seven
- 25:21Speaker 1: runs per game. That was pretty good, right The Yankees
- 25:24Speaker 1: without Judge nineteen and twenty one, two games below five hundred,
- 25:28Speaker 1: averaging four runs per game. That's more than a run
- 25:31Speaker 1: per game less than they were with Judge. They don't
- 25:34Speaker 1: have enough offense now. If you think Judge is coming
- 25:37Speaker 1: back in mid August, late August, even early September, you
- 25:41Speaker 1: go be aggressive at the deadline. You get the right
- 25:43Speaker 1: handed hid and catcher, you get the bullpen pieces that
- 25:46Speaker 1: you need, maybe you get another starter, maybe another bat.
- 25:49Speaker 1: But you've got to have some confidence that Judge is
- 25:53Speaker 1: coming back to do all that. I expect that is
- 25:56Speaker 1: what they're going to do and the course that they're
- 25:58Speaker 1: going to pursue. But it's dicey and it's dicey because
- 26:02Speaker 1: of the unknown with Judge's injury. You heard the news
- 26:05Speaker 1: over the weekend. He is healing, but he's not yet
- 26:08Speaker 1: ready to resume baseball activities. It's going to be some
- 26:11Speaker 1: time still before we see Aaron Judge again.
- 26:15Speaker 3: All right.
- 26:16Speaker 1: With that, I want to thank you for watching for listening.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Foul Territory coming up at one pm Eastern. It's Todd Frasier,
- 26:22Speaker 1: Kevin Pillar, and Trisha Whittaker. Today guests include Rangers reliever
- 26:27Speaker 1: Jacob Latz and USA Today's Bob Nightingale. We'll be back
- 26:31Speaker 1: Thursday at twelve thirty Eastern. Have a great week everyone.
- 26:35Speaker 1: We'll talk to you then and maybe by then we'll
- 26:37Speaker 1: have a little more definition. Thanks.
