- 0:00Speaker 1: Joined as always our Sara here is Evan Lazar and
- 0:07Speaker 1: Alex bar Nothing you do after that matters right now
- 0:11Speaker 1: the microphone over here. Do a great podcast, but it's
- 0:16Speaker 1: gonna sound like crap because we're not lined up correctly,
- 0:18Speaker 1: So hopefully people could hear that. I try to project
- 0:20Speaker 1: little more to make my point, but that is my point.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Like you see what I'm doing. That came through. We're good? Yeah,
- 0:25Speaker 1: all right? Perfect?
- 0:28Speaker 2: You made me chuckle legitimately on that. Sometimes I laugh
- 0:31Speaker 2: just to laugh. I don't like that. I wish that
- 0:34Speaker 2: I didn't just do that sometimes, But that time that
- 0:38Speaker 2: was actually a funny pointed bout you. Not what was
- 0:41Speaker 2: the thing you were saying before the show?
- 0:43Speaker 1: Water water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink.
- 0:46Speaker 1: That's like a famous line from what nineteen twenty three?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Like I hate me. I don't know.
- 0:51Speaker 2: That's the point that I Sometimes you just say things
- 0:53Speaker 2: like this to me, where I'm just.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Like, yeah, you're you're it's like a famous thing though.
- 1:00Speaker 2: You're technically younger than I am, but you will just
- 1:03Speaker 2: like pull these things out where I'm just like, what
- 1:06Speaker 2: generation are you from? Anyways?
- 1:08Speaker 1: I'm entrenched in the zeitgeist. I know what's going on.
- 1:11Speaker 1: What is that even supposed to mean? It made sense
- 1:14Speaker 1: in my head.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Okay, all right, well, hello everybody, Patriots Catch twenty two
- 1:18Speaker 2: here with you for the next couple of hours. Evan
- 1:20Speaker 2: Lazar Alex Barth. Very weird start to the show, but
- 1:24Speaker 2: I just can't get over these little sayings and things
- 1:27Speaker 2: phrases that Alex just pulls out of nowhere sometimes. So
- 1:30Speaker 2: we're gonna talk a lot of Bengals, a lot of
- 1:33Speaker 2: Patriots Bengals. We're gonna talk a little bit about the
- 1:36Speaker 2: league as a whole. Maybe in the second hour. The
- 1:38Speaker 2: show makes some predictions I like those this time of year,
- 1:42Speaker 2: have some MVP predictions, Rookie of the Year, that kind
- 1:45Speaker 2: of stuff. So we'll get to that before we do. Hey,
- 1:48Speaker 2: Patriots fans, if you want to see Toyota's best offers,
- 1:50Speaker 2: including those not seen on TV, go to buy a
- 1:53Speaker 2: Toyota dot com. It's a Toyota's official website for deals
- 1:56Speaker 2: from the official vehicle of the New England Patriots. Tyota.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Let's go places and I'm sure many of you on
- 2:02Speaker 2: Sunday will be easy to drink, easy to enjoy. A
- 2:05Speaker 2: bud Light, the official beer sponsor of the new England Patriots.
- 2:08Speaker 2: All right, I want to start off talking Patriots bangles
- 2:12Speaker 2: in Week one here for the Patriots and this team
- 2:14Speaker 2: and this regime, this era, and look, we all have
- 2:19Speaker 2: concerns about this football team right now. We all are realists,
- 2:23Speaker 2: we all understand where this team is. But I for one,
- 2:26Speaker 2: am so relieved that we are actually going to play
- 2:29Speaker 2: a real game on Sunday and get to see what
- 2:31Speaker 2: this all looks like. Because if I have to hear
- 2:34Speaker 2: one more highpathetical or one more prediction or one more
- 2:38Speaker 2: just they're only gonna win four game, Like, let's see
- 2:41Speaker 2: what it looks like on the field. So I as
- 2:43Speaker 2: much as I understand that the bigger picture of the
- 2:48Speaker 2: team right now is probably more on everybody's mind and
- 2:51Speaker 2: the direction of the GM and the coach and Drake
- 2:54Speaker 2: May and all that kind of stuff, but I'm excited.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I'm excited to see what this team is made of
- 2:59Speaker 2: on the field. Maybe they take us all by surprise.
- 3:02Speaker 2: That being said, I would pick them to probably win
- 3:05Speaker 2: five or six games right now if I had to.
- 3:07Speaker 2: But I'm just so relieved that the crystal ball aspect
- 3:12Speaker 2: is soon to be over and we can see what
- 3:14Speaker 2: really looks like because none of us really know at
- 3:17Speaker 2: the end of the day what is actually gonna look
- 3:18Speaker 2: like on the field. And I feel like right now
- 3:21Speaker 2: there's only one path to everybody, and that is top
- 3:24Speaker 2: three pick again, and we're gonna you know, might as
- 3:26Speaker 2: well start talking about Will Campbell and Travis Hunter today
- 3:29Speaker 2: because it doesn't matter but the next six months after.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So I think you mean Will Campbell in t mac
- 3:33Speaker 1: Ted McMillan, but no, I'm with you. Look, if we
- 3:36Speaker 1: knew it was gonna happen, we wouldn't play the games.
- 3:38Speaker 1: That's what makes it fun any given Sunday. All of that,
- 3:40Speaker 1: that's why we do this because the NFL is as
- 3:44Speaker 1: unpredictable is in football, is as unpredictable as sport as
- 3:48Speaker 1: there is out there. You know, you're not playing a
- 3:50Speaker 1: best of three, best of five series. You're not playing
- 3:53Speaker 1: eighty or one hundred games. You get once a week,
- 3:56Speaker 1: one game to prove you're better. If you have an
- 3:59Speaker 1: off day, you don't get to come back out and
- 4:00Speaker 1: make up for tomorrow. And that's what's really excited about
- 4:03Speaker 1: this is you know there's a plan. It was executed.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I think between the two of us. We agree with
- 4:09Speaker 1: some parts of the plan. There's other parts that were
- 4:11Speaker 1: maybe a little more hesitant about. But it's just that
- 4:14Speaker 1: we're speculating and now we actually get to see this
- 4:16Speaker 1: plan in motion.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good way of putting it. And I
- 4:19Speaker 2: just really feel as though right now in my lifetime
- 4:23Speaker 2: and I'm not talking about you know, there were seasons
- 4:25Speaker 2: two thousand, you know, some of the seasons in the
- 4:27Speaker 2: nineties where maybe it was you know, Rod rust here lifetime, Yes,
- 4:33Speaker 2: but I'm.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Talking about my.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Actual football consumption, not when I was four years old
- 4:43Speaker 2: watching the Patriots in my pajamas, right, Like, I'm talking
- 4:46Speaker 2: about actually knowing the game of football. This is the
- 4:50Speaker 2: most doom and gloom season before it's even kicked off
- 4:54Speaker 2: that I can remember. Everybody in the world thinks the
- 4:57Speaker 2: Patriots are going to stink, right, That is just the
- 5:01Speaker 2: absolute consensus. And I'm not saying that I don't necessarily
- 5:05Speaker 2: agree with it. I'm just excited to see what this
- 5:08Speaker 2: team is actually made of. And this is one of
- 5:10Speaker 2: those years too, where there's going to be individual players
- 5:14Speaker 2: and individual things that we can cling onto and Okay,
- 5:17Speaker 2: is this player is a pillar, Like this player is
- 5:20Speaker 2: a building block moving forward. You know, Christian Gonzalez, Jalen Polk,
- 5:23Speaker 2: you know one of those players, Maybe one of those
- 5:26Speaker 2: guys is a pillar of the next great Patriots team
- 5:30Speaker 2: that they find out this year, you know, Keon White,
- 5:33Speaker 2: Pop Douglas. So it might not be about wins and
- 5:37Speaker 2: losses on the scoreboard all all season long, but I
- 5:39Speaker 2: do hope that we get some of that where we
- 5:42Speaker 2: can come away from games and say, yeah, the Bengals
- 5:46Speaker 2: were the better team and they won twenty three to
- 5:48Speaker 2: twenty or whatever, but Gonzalez held his own against Jamar Chase,
- 5:52Speaker 2: and Pop Douglas had a good game, and so on
- 5:55Speaker 2: and so forth.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Yeah, this season is all about progress and especially from
- 5:58Speaker 1: those younger guys. And you just mentioned it's really these
- 6:00Speaker 1: last two draft classes. These you know, this year's draft
- 6:03Speaker 1: classes foundational in theory with the rebuild. But if you
- 6:06Speaker 1: can get production from Christian Zalz, you can get production
- 6:09Speaker 1: from Keon White city So once he's healthy, if he
- 6:13Speaker 1: shows you he can be a starting guard. Like it
- 6:15Speaker 1: just checks boxes that you don't have to deal with
- 6:17Speaker 1: down the road. So we're gonna talk a lot about progress,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and it progress isn't linear, but We're gonna talk a
- 6:22Speaker 1: lot about progress and projections this year, more than necessarily
- 6:26Speaker 1: the individual results gaming game.
- 6:28Speaker 2: All Right. That being said, I do want to talk
- 6:30Speaker 2: a little bit about this matchup on Sunday. Yeah, And
- 6:34Speaker 2: I do feel oddly like the Patriots can compete in
- 6:39Speaker 2: this game. I think the main reason why I feel
- 6:41Speaker 2: that way is this is essentially for the offensive side
- 6:45Speaker 2: of the ball, a division game. Like Alex van Pelt
- 6:48Speaker 2: knows this team better than just about any other team
- 6:51Speaker 2: that they could have drawn drawn in Week one on
- 6:53Speaker 2: their schedule this year because he literally just spent four
- 6:56Speaker 2: years playing these guys twice a year, and it's been
- 6:59Speaker 2: Van Pelt and Sefanski against lou Ana Rumo for four years.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Like it's just nothing has really changed about all of that.
- 7:07Speaker 2: So there's some things. And you go back to twenty
- 7:09Speaker 2: twenty two. Jacoby brisseaid, I know we've talked a lot
- 7:11Speaker 2: about that game already on here. When you go back
- 7:15Speaker 2: to that game, the Browns rolled that day. It was
- 7:18Speaker 2: thirty two to thirteen Cleveland in that game. Now do
- 7:21Speaker 2: I think that's gonna happen on Sunday. No, But those
- 7:24Speaker 2: are always the games that you look back on especially
- 7:26Speaker 2: week one, and you start to pull things like what
- 7:28Speaker 2: did we do well in that game? What it was
- 7:30Speaker 2: you know, how did we win, how did we move
- 7:32Speaker 2: the ball that day? And what were some of the
- 7:34Speaker 2: schemes instead of the plays that we called a lot. Now,
- 7:39Speaker 2: big picture, as much as it pains me, because you
- 7:43Speaker 2: know that I have nothing, no care in the world
- 7:47Speaker 2: for the run game, No, yeah, as much as it
- 7:49Speaker 2: pains me big picture, it does come back a lot
- 7:54Speaker 2: to the run game, at least being there to set
- 7:57Speaker 2: up play action pass and let this whole system that
- 8:01Speaker 2: Alex Van Pelt is trying to install take flight. If
- 8:05Speaker 2: they can't run the ball at all, and it's not
- 8:08Speaker 2: they don't have to run it for five yards of carry, right,
- 8:10Speaker 2: but like if they can't get over three yards to
- 8:13Speaker 2: carry and just have some semblance of a run game.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I was listening to Brian.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Hoyer three point four he just got average over three
- 8:18Speaker 1: point four yards of carry.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I was listening to Brian Hoyer with Andrews. They
- 8:22Speaker 2: just started a podcast yesterday.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And crazy David Andrews a podcast, Like I'm sure there
- 8:27Speaker 1: was that one clip. Just sorry, no, there's that one
- 8:29Speaker 1: clip where they talked about Andrews making reads in the
- 8:32Speaker 1: centers in the West Coast offense in horos. This is
- 8:34Speaker 1: really good. Yeah, but I don't know, I just didn't
- 8:38Speaker 1: picture David Andrews a podcast, but it looks good.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yeah. So Brian Hoyer was in San Francisco with Kyle Shanahan. Yeah,
- 8:45Speaker 2: and he said that Kyle Shanahan's goal every single game
- 8:50Speaker 2: was to run the ball thirty times or more. And
- 8:52Speaker 2: his reasoning was not necessarily that they wanted to run
- 8:55Speaker 2: the ball thirty times to establish the run in some
- 8:59Speaker 2: identity and be the tougher football team. It was really
- 9:02Speaker 2: because everything in the past game, especially on first and
- 9:05Speaker 2: second down, was married to the run game. So if
- 9:07Speaker 2: they could get to that thirty Kerry mark, they felt
- 9:10Speaker 2: like they could open up the play action pass plays
- 9:12Speaker 2: down the field. When you watch this tape from twenty
- 9:16Speaker 2: twenty two between the Browns and the Bengals with Jacobe
- 9:19Speaker 2: bris Said as the starter for Cleveland, they ran the
- 9:22Speaker 2: ball forty four times in that game. Yeah, but they
- 9:24Speaker 2: really made their hay with the play action passes and
- 9:27Speaker 2: the explosives off of the run game. That was really
- 9:30Speaker 2: where the big plays came into play. So there was
- 9:34Speaker 2: a lot of just day one install type of stuff
- 9:38Speaker 2: on that film. Like they hit David Moore. Remember David
- 9:40Speaker 2: Moore from Perdue the Receiver. Yeah, they hit him on
- 9:43Speaker 2: a show, Like they hit him on a shallow crosser
- 9:48Speaker 2: early on in the game. That was the exact same
- 9:50Speaker 2: play that Drake May hit Jalen Polk on in the
- 9:53Speaker 2: preseason finale against Washington, Like, the exact same play. So
- 9:56Speaker 2: those plays are on this film. They ran the ball successfu.
- 10:00Speaker 2: They were able to attack man coverage, single high coverage
- 10:03Speaker 2: down the field successfully. Now a lot of that went
- 10:05Speaker 2: to Amari Cooper. The Patriots don't have an Amari Cooper,
- 10:08Speaker 2: and the Browns obviously had a better offensive line than
- 10:10Speaker 2: the Patriots do. But that's sort of where I wanted
- 10:13Speaker 2: to go next with this. As much as it pains
- 10:15Speaker 2: me to admit, the run game is a big part
- 10:18Speaker 2: of what they're gonna do this year, and that it's
- 10:20Speaker 2: a very important part of this entire offense and this
- 10:23Speaker 2: scheme and system and whatever.
- 10:25Speaker 1: But did you mean David Bell? Yeah? What did I say? Okay,
- 10:29Speaker 1: David Moore?
- 10:29Speaker 2: Oh, David Bell, Yeah, David Moore.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Ran a four four three forty.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Got those confused?
- 10:35Speaker 1: They all ran a four six five.
- 10:37Speaker 2: The biggest question though, uh, and I wanted to, you know,
- 10:40Speaker 2: talk about this because we have seen a little bit
- 10:42Speaker 2: of it at practice, is the offensive line, like you
- 10:45Speaker 2: can run the ball with it, okay, back in a
- 10:49Speaker 2: great offense line, you can't. Even if you're back is
- 10:51Speaker 2: really special. It's hard to run the ball if you
- 10:53Speaker 2: don't have a good offensive line. The Browns obviously did.
- 10:55Speaker 2: They also went tackle eligible a lot in that game
- 10:58Speaker 2: in twenty twenty two. They did twenty two times in
- 11:01Speaker 2: that game between the Browns and the Bengals, so that
- 11:04Speaker 2: could be a big part of it as well. And
- 11:07Speaker 2: not only do you use that tackle eligible to extra
- 11:09Speaker 2: offensive lineman to block, but you also can use him
- 11:12Speaker 2: in pass protection. And now you have six seven man
- 11:14Speaker 2: pass protections to allow the quarterbacks some more time in
- 11:18Speaker 2: the pocket to push it down the field. That was
- 11:20Speaker 2: the game plan. Then, now that I've laid that out,
- 11:23Speaker 2: I guess, what do you feel like is replicable and
- 11:26Speaker 2: what isn't? Because to me, I look at it and say, well,
- 11:29Speaker 2: my biggest question is if they can run the ball.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Because the Cleveland was able to run the ball, right, Yeah,
- 11:34Speaker 1: I said this to you after Mayo talked on Wednesday.
- 11:39Speaker 1: They're gonna run the ball, run it again, run it
- 11:41Speaker 1: some more, and then when you think they're done running theall,
- 11:43Speaker 1: they're gonna keep running it. That's kind of what Mayo
- 11:45Speaker 1: made it sound like. And I talked to Mike Petralia,
- 11:48Speaker 1: who covers the Bengals, a friend of ours yesterday, who said,
- 11:51Speaker 1: that's kind of the Bengal that's gonna keep the Bengals
- 11:54Speaker 1: up at night. That what Gerrod Mayo said should keep
- 11:56Speaker 1: Zach Taylor up at night. Because the Bengals have struggled
- 11:58Speaker 1: to stop the run. They put, yeah, a lot of
- 12:00Speaker 1: resources this offseason, adding Guyshouk and Sheldon Rankins the big
- 12:04Speaker 1: addition into fortifying that defensive front. But they try to
- 12:08Speaker 1: do it like we'll see if it actually works. The
- 12:10Speaker 1: Bengals have really struggled against the run. And if the
- 12:13Speaker 1: Patriots are just gonna come out and run the ball,
- 12:15Speaker 1: do the Bengals then have to stack the box. And
- 12:19Speaker 1: if they're doing that, it's gonna open up opportunities for
- 12:21Speaker 1: the Patriots throw the ball off play action. So that
- 12:23Speaker 1: does feel like hits the plan. But again, like I said,
- 12:25Speaker 1: do you get ready to watch them run the ball?
- 12:27Speaker 1: A lot. And this is something these West Coast coaches do,
- 12:30Speaker 1: and these guys from the Shanahan trey do even if
- 12:33Speaker 1: it's not gonna work. Even if it's not working, they
- 12:35Speaker 1: will keep running. Yeah, they will keep running because the
- 12:38Speaker 1: idea is what doesn't matter if we're gaining yards. We're
- 12:41Speaker 1: trying to set this up and you need to find
- 12:42Speaker 1: the balancing point there, and not every coach does. But like,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I don't think they're gonna be deterred one way or
- 12:48Speaker 1: the other. I think they're gonna like thirty thirty five
- 12:51Speaker 1: runs sounds about right.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good point now is Another point that
- 12:54Speaker 2: Hoyer made was that Shanahan didn't care about the success
- 12:57Speaker 2: of the run game as much as maybe some other people,
- 12:59Speaker 2: whereas he wouldn't abandon it, is what I mean, because
- 13:04Speaker 2: even if they were only going at two and a
- 13:05Speaker 2: half three yards carry, the idea was to set everything
- 13:08Speaker 2: else up, so it wasn't necessarily about just the pure
- 13:11Speaker 2: success of the run game. I'm just really fascinated as
- 13:14Speaker 2: a whole to see if this wide zone scheme sticks
- 13:18Speaker 2: or not for the Patriots. And notoriously speaking, like over
- 13:22Speaker 2: the course of like these systems and all this even
- 13:25Speaker 2: going all the way back to like the the Broncos
- 13:27Speaker 2: you know in the in the nineteen nineties when like
- 13:30Speaker 2: they really ran a ton of wide zone with the
- 13:32Speaker 2: Mike Shanahan and that whole coaching staff. They it doesn't
- 13:38Speaker 2: happen overnight. A lot of the time, like the wide
- 13:40Speaker 2: zone scheme is something that gets drilled over time, and
- 13:43Speaker 2: some people actually say it could take a full year
- 13:46Speaker 2: before you actually have it going the way that you
- 13:48Speaker 2: want it going. And the other part of that is
- 13:52Speaker 2: just like not it's all. You can call it stubbornness
- 13:55Speaker 2: of if you want, but the main thing is is
- 13:57Speaker 2: that it's they stick to it like they are not.
- 14:00Speaker 2: In my mind, I don't think Alex van Pelt is
- 14:03Speaker 2: gonna look at it and like completely throw it out
- 14:05Speaker 2: two weeks into the season because they can't run the
- 14:07Speaker 2: ball with wide zone. He's gonna say by week fifteen,
- 14:10Speaker 2: by week sixteen, will be running the ball with wide zone.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Where these are growing pains and that could lead to
- 14:17Speaker 2: some frustrating moments early on in the season, but they
- 14:20Speaker 2: feel strongly that Tree feels strongly about the fact that
- 14:24Speaker 2: it will eventually click, like it'll eventually very strong hit. Yeah,
- 14:27Speaker 2: and I just the whole thing fascinates me because I'm
- 14:32Speaker 2: not sure if they have the horses for it, Like
- 14:35Speaker 2: I'm not really sure the personnel is a great fit
- 14:37Speaker 2: for it on the offensive line. But this everything that
- 14:41Speaker 2: they do in the past game and play action, especially
- 14:43Speaker 2: on first and second down, is built off of this working.
- 14:46Speaker 2: So whether it's outside zone, whether it's pinpole inside zone,
- 14:49Speaker 2: those are kind of a you know, trap is like
- 14:52Speaker 2: the one gap scheme that they'll run. Those are like
- 14:54Speaker 2: some of the things that they like to do, and
- 14:57Speaker 2: all of it is married together. So if you are
- 15:00Speaker 2: able to be successful in wide zone, then I don't
- 15:03Speaker 2: know what the pivot is for this coaching staff, And
- 15:05Speaker 2: my guess is it's gonna be head down and just
- 15:08Speaker 2: hope that it eventually clicks.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I think so too.
- 15:11Speaker 2: So let's get into the defense side of the ball,
- 15:13Speaker 2: and we'll do some key matchups and then we'll open
- 15:15Speaker 2: the phone lines and all that kind of stuff emails,
- 15:19Speaker 2: and then we got some season predictions, both Patriots and
- 15:22Speaker 2: league wide predictions as well. But I want to talk
- 15:24Speaker 2: about defense. I think the biggest thing with the defense
- 15:26Speaker 2: that I have just philosophically is the matchup in twenty
- 15:31Speaker 2: twenty two. Again this is Patriots Bengals. Now we're talking
- 15:34Speaker 2: about Week sixteen. The Patriots played eighty two percent of
- 15:39Speaker 2: their dropbacks in zone coverage in that game. Remember who
- 15:43Speaker 2: their three corners were. The starting corners.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Marcus I remember Marcus Jones was one, because you had
- 15:48Speaker 1: five eight Marcus Jones on six five. T Higgins, yeah
- 15:51Speaker 1: was John Jones was hurt a lot during that season.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Did he play in that game? He played? And then
- 15:55Speaker 1: Miles Bryant.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Miles Bryant, So all three guys were under five foot nine. Yeah, right,
- 16:00Speaker 2: And what the Patriots did was they played a lot
- 16:03Speaker 2: of two deep zone, which they didn't normally do a
- 16:05Speaker 2: ton of under Belichick. But next Gen goes all the
- 16:08Speaker 2: way back to twenty sixteen. That game is the most
- 16:11Speaker 2: drop backs the Patriots had ever played in two deep
- 16:15Speaker 2: zone in eight years under Bill Belichick. And they part
- 16:19Speaker 2: of it was because of the corners. Right, you have
- 16:22Speaker 2: that kind of personnel. You have T Higgins and Jamar Chase,
- 16:26Speaker 2: both guys that can really win at the catch point.
- 16:28Speaker 2: You don't want to put those guys on islands, right
- 16:30Speaker 2: with the taller receivers and the bigger receivers, Now, the
- 16:34Speaker 2: question that I have for this regime and for DeMarcus
- 16:37Speaker 2: Covington is you do have Christian Gonzales. Now you do
- 16:40Speaker 2: have Marco Wilson, Alex Austin, some guys that you can
- 16:44Speaker 2: throw in there that have a little bit more size
- 16:45Speaker 2: and a little bit more length. Do you feel comfortable
- 16:49Speaker 2: playing some man coverage, playing some five to six guys
- 16:54Speaker 2: in the back end, because I feel like they want
- 16:58Speaker 2: to be more like those eighteen nineteen Brian Flores Patriots
- 17:02Speaker 2: right where they're coming after quarterbacks and they're five zero,
- 17:05Speaker 2: you know, five man rushes cover zero rush like that
- 17:08Speaker 2: sort of stuff. But they had prime Stefan Gilmore. We
- 17:12Speaker 2: always talk about, you know, j C. Jackson, the Jason mccordy,
- 17:15Speaker 2: you know, role and all that. They had great secondary
- 17:17Speaker 2: players back then. If they're gonna do that, it's gonna
- 17:20Speaker 2: put a lot of stress on the back end to
- 17:21Speaker 2: hold up in man coverage on their own. But it
- 17:24Speaker 2: does feel like they have to manufacture pass rush, Like
- 17:26Speaker 2: I don't know if they now without Judon and Barmore,
- 17:29Speaker 2: they don't have those guys anymore that can just win
- 17:31Speaker 2: one on one and a four man rush. So twenty
- 17:34Speaker 2: twenty two. It was a lot of four man rush.
- 17:36Speaker 2: There's a lot of drop seven into cover two, and
- 17:39Speaker 2: they did just relied on Barmore and Judan to win
- 17:41Speaker 2: some one on one to get some pass rush going.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Do you think that they're at a point now where
- 17:46Speaker 2: they believe in Gonzo enough that they say whether it's
- 17:50Speaker 2: Higgins or Chase and we can get into which one
- 17:52Speaker 2: he matches up against. You know, we feel like you're
- 17:55Speaker 2: Stefan Gilmour Durell Reeves ty Law, where we're just gonna
- 17:58Speaker 2: give you one of those guys and that's how we're
- 18:00Speaker 2: gonna roll.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Well, I think they kind of have to, right. I
- 18:03Speaker 1: think that they're at the point where their pass rushes
- 18:06Speaker 1: or their defensive front is or they kind of have
- 18:07Speaker 1: to give that a shot now. I wonder if they
- 18:09Speaker 1: do the old Belichick thing where it's Gonzales on Higgins
- 18:14Speaker 1: and then John Jones or whoever on Jamar Chase with
- 18:17Speaker 1: help over the top. But yeah, you took this guy
- 18:20Speaker 1: in the first round and Gonzal I'm talking about Gonzalez
- 18:23Speaker 1: took him in the first round. Yep has the prototype
- 18:25Speaker 1: of being a number one corner. Showed flashes of that
- 18:28Speaker 1: last year you're going to need a cover for longer
- 18:31Speaker 1: than the average team because the pass rush isn't gonna
- 18:34Speaker 1: be there. You gotta at least try and see if
- 18:36Speaker 1: it works, because if they can't hold up in coverage
- 18:39Speaker 1: like that with with Gonzalez winning one on ones, the
- 18:42Speaker 1: whole picture gets a lot murkier defensively. So yeah, I
- 18:45Speaker 1: think they have to give that a shot.
- 18:46Speaker 2: That's where I think we're headed. Now. Is it Week
- 18:48Speaker 2: one against the Bengals with those two receivers, assuming it
- 18:53Speaker 2: looks like Jamar Chase is trending towards playing in this
- 18:55Speaker 2: game on Sunday, I don't know, but they're gonna have
- 18:58Speaker 2: to trust the back end because me, the strength is Gonzo,
- 19:02Speaker 2: John Jones and the two safeties Peppers and Dugger Like,
- 19:04Speaker 2: that's now the strength of your defense. So I'm excited
- 19:07Speaker 2: to see that. That to me, not only has the
- 19:11Speaker 2: ben not break, you know, stuff been kind of tedious
- 19:14Speaker 2: to watch, but last year especially the turnovers started to
- 19:17Speaker 2: dry up. And usually when you look at turnover numbers,
- 19:20Speaker 2: it's all predicated on getting pressure on the quarterback. If
- 19:23Speaker 2: you're not disrupting the quarterback and he's throwing from clean pockets,
- 19:26Speaker 2: you're gonna have fewer turnovers. So if they can get
- 19:28Speaker 2: after the quarterback a little bit more this year exotically
- 19:31Speaker 2: up front, then then maybe they do start to turn
- 19:34Speaker 2: the ball over a little bit more. And that's optimistic.
- 19:36Speaker 2: What would you do with Christian zalz Uh?
- 19:40Speaker 1: Like I said before, I think I'd put him on Higgins, Yeah,
- 19:42Speaker 1: and go John Jones with help on on Chase one.
- 19:45Speaker 1: I just think good zals on Higgins better matchup, and
- 19:48Speaker 1: you get John Jones speed over on Chase's side, Chase
- 19:52Speaker 1: a little bit faster, So I go that way.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 19:56Speaker 1: I And then it's Marcus Jones on Do we know
- 19:59Speaker 1: who they're gonna It's not gonna be Jermaine Burton in
- 20:01Speaker 1: the slot.
- 20:01Speaker 2: No, it's gonna be uh probably Charlie Jones. Are the isovas.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I think it's how you say, yeah.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I trust Marcus Jones any of those matchups.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Yeah, they're the isow it's a little bit bigger, like
- 20:14Speaker 2: he's he's not like a five eight soot receiver.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Yeah, but I saw Marcus Jones hold his own against
- 20:19Speaker 1: T Higgins two years ago in this exact matchup, so yeah,
- 20:22Speaker 1: he's also not like, I know he's not small, but
- 20:25Speaker 1: he's not like big.
- 20:26Speaker 2: I want to say he's like five to eleven.
- 20:27Speaker 1: He's six six ' three. Yeah. I didn't Okay, I
- 20:30Speaker 1: didn't think I thought. I thought he doesn't play that big.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Yeah. I thought he was even shorter than that. So
- 20:35Speaker 2: I knew he was like six foot. I didn't realize
- 20:38Speaker 2: he was.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought he was like six foot maybe six
- 20:39Speaker 1: to one. Yeah, and two twelve too. He doesn't look
- 20:41Speaker 1: like he's two twelve.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Well, all right, I guess he is. I'm with you
- 20:48Speaker 2: with Gonzalez. I I feel like T Higgins is like
- 20:53Speaker 2: a decent matchup for him. It's a really good receiver,
- 20:57Speaker 2: but T Higgins is not Tier one Jamar level, where
- 21:01Speaker 2: you're taking him on an island for four quarters. That's
- 21:03Speaker 2: a lot to ask. Yeah, Jamar Chase with help over
- 21:06Speaker 2: the top from Jonathan Jones, something along those lines makes
- 21:10Speaker 2: the most sense.
- 21:11Speaker 1: They play.
- 21:11Speaker 2: You know, they've played some cloud, they've played some like
- 21:14Speaker 2: you know, they have a guy on the line of
- 21:15Speaker 2: scrimmage that'll jam them and then they'll rotate the safety
- 21:18Speaker 2: over to that side of the field over the top
- 21:21Speaker 2: and kind of high low them in that way. They
- 21:22Speaker 2: can bracket. You know, they obviously have all their bracket
- 21:25Speaker 2: calls and things like that that they could run at Chase.
- 21:28Speaker 2: You feel like it's almost like a box and one right,
- 21:30Speaker 2: where like Gonzales has Higgins one on one and that
- 21:34Speaker 2: way there, you could do all the different exotic stuff
- 21:36Speaker 2: to Jamar Chase, whether it's a bracket, whether it's you know,
- 21:39Speaker 2: putting a safety up over the top of him, or
- 21:41Speaker 2: whatever the case may be. Even just those looks from
- 21:44Speaker 2: a quarterback perspective could get Joe Burrow to move off
- 21:47Speaker 2: of him even if he's open. You know, like it's
- 21:49Speaker 2: sometimes hard for quarterbacks, especially like Burrow, who just wants
- 21:52Speaker 2: to throw to the open guy. It's hard for those
- 21:55Speaker 2: guys to really lock on like that because well they're
- 21:59Speaker 2: bracket coveraging. I mean, somebody else is one on one
- 22:01Speaker 2: somewhere else. Why would I throw it into double coverage, right,
- 22:04Speaker 2: So that's what I would do as well. I meant
- 22:07Speaker 2: to bring up the offensive line a little bit more detail,
- 22:09Speaker 2: because we did see what we think is going to
- 22:12Speaker 2: be the starting offensive line out at practice today. So
- 22:14Speaker 2: let's go back to that real quick and then we'll
- 22:15Speaker 2: do the rest of our Gonzalez is one of my
- 22:17Speaker 2: key matchups, so I don't know if he was one
- 22:20Speaker 2: of yours. Yeah, offensive line real quickly right now, if
- 22:25Speaker 2: I had to guess, on Thursday at two thirty, we'll
- 22:29Speaker 2: go from left to right choops a core four, left tackle,
- 22:34Speaker 2: Michael Jordan, practice squad elevation starts.
- 22:37Speaker 1: See, so they've worked Leverett there too a bit. I
- 22:41Speaker 1: wonder if they're getting Jordan read in case something happens
- 22:43Speaker 1: to Andrews. If the plan is for Lever to go
- 22:46Speaker 1: in a center and Jordan is essentially the backup guard,
- 22:49Speaker 1: I think he's getting elevated, like yeah, practicing like he's
- 22:51Speaker 1: getting elevated.
- 22:52Speaker 2: So let's call it a rotation right now between Leverett
- 22:55Speaker 2: and Michael Jordan at left guard, David Andrews obviously at center,
- 22:59Speaker 2: Leyden Robinson and right guard Mike on Wenny right tackle.
- 23:04Speaker 2: To me, it's it's bad, right yeah. But the one
- 23:09Speaker 2: thing I do feel good about for them going in
- 23:12Speaker 2: is that right side of the line of scrimmage. I
- 23:14Speaker 2: know you're you're counting a lot on a rookie in
- 23:16Speaker 2: Leyden Robinson, but if you can get him and Mike
- 23:20Speaker 2: on Wentu downhill on some of those combination blocks, like
- 23:24Speaker 2: that's something that you feel okay about that maybe they
- 23:27Speaker 2: can run over the right side a little bit with
- 23:30Speaker 2: those two guys. That that to me is always the
- 23:32Speaker 2: easiest too for rookies, especially, like just go hit somebody right, like,
- 23:36Speaker 2: don't get into all of the finesse stuff and all
- 23:38Speaker 2: the technique stuff in past pro as much as you can,
- 23:41Speaker 2: and just come off the ball and hit someone like that.
- 23:44Speaker 2: That to me is always the easiest thing to ask
- 23:46Speaker 2: rookies to do it when they come in out of
- 23:48Speaker 2: the gate. So if I had to hang my hat
- 23:50Speaker 2: on anything with this, it would be that I that
- 23:52Speaker 2: left side is very very dubious, like that is a
- 23:55Speaker 2: weak left side.
- 23:56Speaker 1: I just don't understand. And you mentioned rotation there, and
- 23:59Speaker 1: I actually I think that's a good way to put it,
- 24:02Speaker 1: because we saw a bill do this. When we see
- 24:03Speaker 1: other NFL teams do this week one even really through
- 24:06Speaker 1: the first month, they'll rotate some linement just for conditioning reasons. Yeah.
- 24:10Speaker 1: But yeah, so you're gonna have a rotation at right
- 24:12Speaker 1: guard with two guys that are probably backups, and then
- 24:16Speaker 1: I just don't know how you can put Chukes, a
- 24:18Speaker 1: core four back at left tackle. Well, let me say it.
- 24:21Speaker 1: I think it's really really tough to have to put Chukes,
- 24:24Speaker 1: a core four back at left tackle after what he
- 24:26Speaker 1: showed last week. Yeah. The reason I didn't want to
- 24:29Speaker 1: say I don't know how you can is because I
- 24:31Speaker 1: know how you can, because he's still the best option.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Like it's base healthy, healthy, right healthy? Yeah, obviously, but
- 24:40Speaker 1: Vederian Lowe looked limited today. Now, he wasn't full of uniform,
- 24:44Speaker 1: so I think that's encouraging. Yeah, he's doing some stuff
- 24:46Speaker 1: and if they get low back that helps. But it's
- 24:49Speaker 1: that or Kayden Wallace. And I've said this, I like
- 24:51Speaker 1: Kaden Wallace, but I like him as a right tackle.
- 24:54Speaker 1: I don't think having him make this move, especially now,
- 24:57Speaker 1: and he hasn't been practicing.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Like.
- 25:00Speaker 1: And that's the other thing. What happens if Chus cole
- 25:01Speaker 1: four gets hurt? Where are you going from there?
- 25:03Speaker 3: Is it? Den?
- 25:04Speaker 1: Kden Wallace? Is it? Are they gonna elevate Caleb Jones
- 25:08Speaker 1: from the practice squad and have two offensive line elevations.
- 25:11Speaker 1: I wouldn't rule that out at all, although I would
- 25:15Speaker 1: like to have Isaiah Bolden. Knowing now how big Ayo
- 25:17Speaker 1: Sovas is in the slot. Yeah, yeah, I I just
- 25:22Speaker 1: chookes a corps for had his worst performance of the
- 25:25Speaker 1: summer when you put him at left tackle, and now
- 25:27Speaker 1: he's back their week one, and that's really concerned. Yeah.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Absolutely. I I understand that it's not good and they
- 25:36Speaker 2: don't have a lot of good options at left tackle.
- 25:39Speaker 2: So I want to get.
- 25:39Speaker 1: That they don't really have options, period.
- 25:41Speaker 2: I want to get that out of the way because
- 25:43Speaker 2: when I when I get out of my soapbox and
- 25:45Speaker 2: I and I defend vert Vederian Lo a little bit,
- 25:48Speaker 2: I think a lot of people take it the wrong
- 25:50Speaker 2: way and assume that I'm saying that he's like Joe
- 25:52Speaker 2: Thomas and his prime right, he's this is not a
- 25:57Speaker 2: good roster construction, that he's your best option. That's on
- 26:00Speaker 2: Ellie Wolf. Right, We've been over this. We don't have
- 26:02Speaker 2: to beat a dead horse, right, But that's on Elliot
- 26:04Speaker 2: Wolf that Vederian Low and Chooks at Corps four, two
- 26:07Speaker 2: guys that really haven't played a ton in the NFL
- 26:09Speaker 2: at left tackle, Are are your best options at left tackle?
- 26:13Speaker 3: Well?
- 26:14Speaker 1: Okay, Low has I think for a second, I thought
- 26:15Speaker 1: you said a corp fur and Walls. I was gonna
- 26:17Speaker 1: say neither one's played left tackle.
- 26:18Speaker 2: No, No, Lowis played a little bit. Lo's played a
- 26:20Speaker 2: little bit right last. So Vaderian Low to me, is
- 26:22Speaker 2: still their best option at left tackle, simply because I
- 26:25Speaker 2: feel like he looks the most comfortable over there.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Is he a dynamic He is the only actual left tackle.
- 26:32Speaker 1: He should look the most comfortable over there. Right?
- 26:33Speaker 2: Is he a dynamic blocker? No, Like he's not. He's
- 26:36Speaker 2: not a very good player, but he's their best option.
- 26:40Speaker 2: And I still hope that they can get back on
- 26:43Speaker 2: the offensive line to Vederian Lowe City so David Andrews,
- 26:48Speaker 2: Leiden Robinson or some combination of that of the sort.
- 26:52Speaker 2: With those five guys, that to me, especially with Chukes
- 26:55Speaker 2: being back on the right side, is their best five.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and then you get to put on one who
- 27:00Speaker 1: back in the guard.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe you put him back into the guard, and
- 27:04Speaker 2: you know you have checks at right Vaderian had left,
- 27:07Speaker 2: and then Robinson and so are kind of competing at
- 27:09Speaker 2: left guard. You know, that's sort of an ongoing competition.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Do you put that's their best five?
- 27:13Speaker 1: Do you put? And I mean this is going beyond
- 27:15Speaker 1: the Bengals game, obviously, this isn't for this week. You
- 27:18Speaker 1: make anything out of that Caleb Jones signing. Not really.
- 27:24Speaker 2: I don't really ever put too much in stock into
- 27:27Speaker 2: those types of moves, you know, waiver wire guys, practice
- 27:30Speaker 2: squad signings, things like that. I really feel as though
- 27:35Speaker 2: they have seen some real progress from Vaderian Low. Now,
- 27:38Speaker 2: he's got to be healthy, like you know, that's an
- 27:41Speaker 2: obvious thing. But his ability to use his length. He
- 27:45Speaker 2: does have like thirty five inch arms, like he's he's
- 27:47Speaker 2: got legit length at tackle. His ability to use his length,
- 27:51Speaker 2: and he just needs to be more consistent like there
- 27:55Speaker 2: he would. He really has is like two or three
- 27:58Speaker 2: blocks a game, uh in the preseason where you're just like,
- 28:01Speaker 2: what the heck was that?
- 28:03Speaker 1: Right?
- 28:03Speaker 2: Like you know, like he has those moments that are bad,
- 28:05Speaker 2: don't get me wrong, but over the course of four quarters,
- 28:09Speaker 2: like if he plays seventy snaps, they're gonna be two
- 28:12Speaker 2: or three. And this always drives me nuts because it's
- 28:14Speaker 2: like this is gonna happen sometimes, Yeah, there's gonna be
- 28:17Speaker 2: two or three really bad beats and we're you know,
- 28:20Speaker 2: just like the sack against the Eagles, you know, in
- 28:22Speaker 2: the preseason game, there's gonna be two or three really
- 28:25Speaker 2: bad beats from Vederian low every single week. But then
- 28:27Speaker 2: when you watch, like the other sixty six reps that
- 28:30Speaker 2: he takes, they're all okay, you know, like not great,
- 28:32Speaker 2: but okay. Like he treads water for the most part
- 28:35Speaker 2: on all those reps. But the bad ones are bad.
- 28:38Speaker 2: And for right now, I would just take that over
- 28:42Speaker 2: a guy that can't even line up right when he
- 28:44Speaker 2: plays left tackle.
- 28:44Speaker 1: I mean, you know where I'm I'm at on that,
- 28:46Speaker 1: Just on Jones, Just to go back to Jones rope, Yeah,
- 28:48Speaker 1: guy who had a good preseason and obviously six nine,
- 28:51Speaker 1: three seventy and yeah, that might be he's definitely an
- 28:54Speaker 1: underestimate having stood next to him. I go back to
- 28:58Speaker 1: something Drod Mayo said at the end of camp. He
- 29:03Speaker 1: was specifically asked about the offensive line and said, we're
- 29:07Speaker 1: still trying to get better. We're just trying to get
- 29:09Speaker 1: better at not only the starting five that we're talking about,
- 29:12Speaker 1: but also on the practice squad. That's how we look
- 29:14Speaker 1: at the practice squad as well. These guys aren't here
- 29:15Speaker 1: on our practice squad just to take reps during practice. No,
- 29:19Speaker 1: we look at it from a developmental standpoint, where all
- 29:21Speaker 1: these guys need to be ready to play, So this
- 29:24Speaker 1: isn't I don't think they viewed the practice squad as
- 29:27Speaker 1: bodies for the scout team. I think they view the
- 29:29Speaker 1: practice squad is essentially maybe minor league's the wrong word,
- 29:33Speaker 1: but like guys, they want to work with guys, they
- 29:35Speaker 1: want to see what's there. To me, Caleb Jones kind
- 29:39Speaker 1: of is a factor, and not for Week one, like
- 29:42Speaker 1: he hasn't been here long enough. But given how little
- 29:46Speaker 1: actual how few actual left tackles they have, it's really
- 29:49Speaker 1: one for Dari Lows on the real actual left tackle
- 29:52Speaker 1: they have. Caleb Jones has played left tackle in the
- 29:55Speaker 1: NFL in the preseason. That's not a lot. But if
- 29:57Speaker 1: they're going to use the practice squad to develop players
- 30:00Speaker 1: and they have essentially zero depth that left tackle, maybe
- 30:04Speaker 1: there's a chance we see Caleb Jones at some point
- 30:06Speaker 1: if he makes progress. So I don't I don't know
- 30:09Speaker 1: how that it's gonna look like. Again, he's been in
- 30:11Speaker 1: the NFL for two years. He's played one regular season snap.
- 30:13Speaker 1: It was on special teams. I don't know how that's
- 30:16Speaker 1: gonna look. But I feel like the fact they brought
- 30:18Speaker 1: him in all right, let's see if they can work
- 30:20Speaker 1: with him, Let's see if they can get something out
- 30:22Speaker 1: of them.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Like, I know, it's absolutely nuts to me that this
- 30:25Speaker 2: is where they're at.
- 30:26Speaker 1: I know, you just I know, and I'm with you,
- 30:28Speaker 1: But I know you just said that. You know, you
- 30:29Speaker 1: don't look at the practice squad signings and the waiver
- 30:31Speaker 1: claims as much.
- 30:32Speaker 2: And I just in the past it just is never
- 30:35Speaker 2: nine times out of ten and it amounts to nothing.
- 30:37Speaker 2: But I have to keep it.
- 30:38Speaker 1: No, I give you that. But and I guess he
- 30:41Speaker 1: was a trade acquisition, But isn't that essentially what Vederian
- 30:44Speaker 1: Lowe was last year? Just kind of a late, really
- 30:47Speaker 1: out there flyer on a guy who hadn't played. And
- 30:49Speaker 1: here we are a year later, he's the starting left
- 30:51Speaker 1: tower or if he's healthy, he's the starting left tackle.
- 30:53Speaker 2: So who's but that shouldn't be the case, Like no, oh,
- 30:56Speaker 2: absolutely absolutely.
- 30:57Speaker 1: But I'm just saying, like, as we try to get
- 30:59Speaker 1: through this season, and this goes back to your point
- 31:01Speaker 1: off the top of the show, we're not doing hypotheticals,
- 31:03Speaker 1: we're not doing big picture. We're looking weak to weak
- 31:06Speaker 1: And maybe I'm getting a little ahead of where we're
- 31:08Speaker 1: at with the Bengals, but yea you know, I'm not
- 31:10Speaker 1: bringing up Curtis Jacobs, who's a linebacker who they claimed
- 31:13Speaker 1: off waivers. I'm not brnking up you know some of
- 31:16Speaker 1: the other guys they signed to the practice squad, like
- 31:19Speaker 1: Matt Landers or O'shawn Mathis, or these guys that play
- 31:22Speaker 1: positions where they have depth. Vederian Lowe is kind of
- 31:25Speaker 1: a last second flyer last year who became the starting
- 31:29Speaker 1: left tackle. Even if it's not like good enough, all right,
- 31:34Speaker 1: they bring Caleb Jones in. Now if Darien Lowe struggles,
- 31:39Speaker 1: like I guess, okay, I'm talking this through in real time.
- 31:42Speaker 2: I hear what you're saying.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Do you think do you think there's a chance for
- 31:45Speaker 1: Darien Lowe plays poorly, but they leave him in simply
- 31:48Speaker 1: because they feel they have no better option. And do
- 31:50Speaker 1: you think Caleb Jones could get to the point where
- 31:53Speaker 1: he's not going to be a long term fixed But
- 31:55Speaker 1: all right, we need to get for Darian low out.
- 31:57Speaker 1: We at least feel comfortable giving this guy a shot.
- 32:00Speaker 2: It's possible. I just I've seen enough out of a
- 32:05Speaker 2: Darian low that he is their clear cut best option
- 32:07Speaker 2: at left tackle right now, So I something would have
- 32:10Speaker 2: to go on behind the scenes with Caleb Jones that
- 32:13Speaker 2: he really came on.
- 32:14Speaker 1: But that's what I'm saying, like an unrealistic gap.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Is it unrealistic? No, because we're not talking about again,
- 32:22Speaker 2: we're not talking about Prime jar. It's possible. I I
- 32:28Speaker 2: just look at him, and I would say, you mentioned
- 32:30Speaker 2: Caleb Jones. I would say the same thing with Trey Jacobs,
- 32:32Speaker 2: who I thought had some decent.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Uh the other tackle. Yeah, okay, that's fair trade. Jacobs.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Really what stood out at most about him when I
- 32:41Speaker 2: some of the games that I watched of his was
- 32:44Speaker 2: his athleticism in space, Like this is a guy that
- 32:46Speaker 2: can really get out and move and block the latterly
- 32:49Speaker 2: and block in space, which is what this offense is
- 32:52Speaker 2: going to be asking them to do a lot at
- 32:53Speaker 2: the tackle position in the run game. So could both
- 32:56Speaker 2: those guys uh push Vederian low at some point? Yeah?
- 33:01Speaker 2: Uh my only like little rebuttal to that would be.
- 33:04Speaker 2: I would hope that Caden Wallace is the one that's
- 33:07Speaker 2: pushing it.
- 33:08Speaker 1: But I still think he's a right tackle and I
- 33:10Speaker 1: want them to develop him at right tackle. I want
- 33:12Speaker 1: him to push Jukes.
- 33:13Speaker 2: A corps for what a mess? Uh Yeah?
- 33:15Speaker 1: And I shouldn't left out Jacobs. That's a good point
- 33:17Speaker 1: by you. I would include him. I just have Caleb
- 33:19Speaker 1: Jones because they just signed him.
- 33:21Speaker 2: But he is a monster of a man.
- 33:23Speaker 1: If yeah, he's hard to get out of your head.
- 33:25Speaker 1: If if people are gonna call in or talk about like, oh,
- 33:28Speaker 1: you know Venderian Lowe sure can't be the guy. Like
- 33:32Speaker 1: I'm always big on this. Anytime you want to talk
- 33:35Speaker 1: about benching a player, you have to give me an alternative. Yeah,
- 33:37Speaker 1: you can't just say take him out. No, we're not
- 33:39Speaker 1: gonna play with ten guys, like who's going in right?
- 33:42Speaker 1: The help's not coming externally. So at this point, if
- 33:44Speaker 1: you need a replacement left tackle, I know Caanen Wallace maybe,
- 33:47Speaker 1: but I think these are the guys we were talking about,
- 33:49Speaker 1: Trey Jacobs and Caleb Jones.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, I'm with you. And I didn't want
- 33:53Speaker 2: to come into this show and do the whole you
- 33:56Speaker 2: know your station thing and start getting all mad about
- 33:58Speaker 2: the left tackle situation. But it has to be said
- 34:02Speaker 2: that the fact that there this is what we're talking
- 34:04Speaker 2: about go heading into week one, and the fact that
- 34:07Speaker 2: they really just left themselves high and dry at the
- 34:11Speaker 2: position for a year is a mind.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Blowing inexcusable inexcusable it.
- 34:17Speaker 2: They don't have anybody with real NFL experience that's ever
- 34:20Speaker 2: played left tackle in the league before, Like Vadarian Lowe
- 34:22Speaker 2: is the closest thing that they have to that. And
- 34:24Speaker 2: it's like what like maybe three or four starts or
- 34:26Speaker 2: something like that last year at left tackle, Like that's
- 34:29Speaker 2: a think about that. They have nobody on the team
- 34:32Speaker 2: that has made any significant amount of playing time, has
- 34:36Speaker 2: had any significant amount of playing time at left tackle.
- 34:38Speaker 1: And nobody nobody was asking them to, you know, go
- 34:41Speaker 1: out and get their future franchise left tackles off seas.
- 34:44Speaker 1: I mean, like it would have been great, but they
- 34:45Speaker 1: had so many needs they weren't going to be able
- 34:46Speaker 1: to dress every single one to that extent. But you know,
- 34:49Speaker 1: bridge players, Jermaine A. Luminar was out there. What happened
- 34:53Speaker 1: to Justin Haran? Like Justin Haran is kind of the
- 34:55Speaker 1: exact guy they need. Maybe a guy that gave up
- 34:58Speaker 1: on too early. Actually I looked this up. I think
- 34:59Speaker 1: he was hurt last year, so maybe that's why. But
- 35:02Speaker 1: like just a bridge tackle guy who's played in this league.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Justin Haraan suffered a knee injury late last year, so
- 35:09Speaker 1: maybe that's why. Yeah, and he was placed on injured
- 35:12Speaker 1: reserve on July twenty eighth, So.
- 35:14Speaker 2: I wanted also with a whole tackle thing. Let's not
- 35:20Speaker 2: let's not Rid Belichick of blame of that, because.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Yeah, no, this is the most we've been, this is
- 35:26Speaker 1: the most back year gets solder, we've we've done the
- 35:28Speaker 1: timeline and Isaiah Win and Trent Brown being a stop
- 35:31Speaker 1: gap so they could focus on other positions. Like, Yeah,
- 35:34Speaker 1: as much as it goes back years, as much as
- 35:36Speaker 1: we can sit here and say that it wasn't good
- 35:39Speaker 1: procedure or whatever you want to call it, wasn't wasn't
- 35:41Speaker 1: good GMing by Elliott Wolf to go this route this offseason.
- 35:47Speaker 1: To me, it's even more inexcusable that they didn't draft
- 35:50Speaker 1: to tackle last year in twenty twenty three. Yeah, well
- 35:52Speaker 1: I did.
- 35:53Speaker 2: If you put and look, I maybe Marty Mapu gets
- 35:56Speaker 2: healthy and he ends up Marte Mopu. Excuse me, I
- 35:58Speaker 2: should say his name correctly. Maybe he gets healthy and
- 36:01Speaker 2: ends up being a decent player for them, But it
- 36:03Speaker 2: doesn't help that he also hasn't really made an impact
- 36:06Speaker 2: on the team as a top one hundred pick. If
- 36:09Speaker 2: you just took Marte Mapu out and put an actual
- 36:12Speaker 2: left tackle into that spot, then at least you have,
- 36:15Speaker 2: along with Caden Wallace, you have like two young tackles
- 36:17Speaker 2: now that you're developing, even if the guy isn't a
- 36:20Speaker 2: day one answer at the position. I understand that the
- 36:24Speaker 2: Kansas City Chiefs, and we went through this with the
- 36:26Speaker 2: Patriots with Tom Brady, where it's easy to just kind
- 36:29Speaker 2: of plug rookies in in some spots or plug guys
- 36:32Speaker 2: in from the street and make it look a whole
- 36:34Speaker 2: lot better because you have the greatest quarterback of all time.
- 36:37Speaker 2: But the Chiefs are going to start this off the
- 36:39Speaker 2: season tonight with Kingsley Siuemaitai as their starting left tackle,
- 36:43Speaker 2: a guy the Patriots could have had in the draft,
- 36:46Speaker 2: and he is going to start Day one for Kansas City.
- 36:49Speaker 2: He's gonna be good. He's gonna be a good player
- 36:51Speaker 2: for them. And that, to me is the second guest
- 36:54Speaker 2: of the draft. Like that was the move. The move
- 36:56Speaker 2: was to trade up, give up the Javon Baker pick
- 36:59Speaker 2: and go up and get a guy like Kingsley.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Lee, Patrick, Paul, even Blake Fisher. Yeah, well, to your
- 37:05Speaker 1: point about like it's on Bill as well as Wolfe.
- 37:10Speaker 1: I mean, look, I would think a big part of
- 37:12Speaker 1: the reason Bill isn't here, and not directly, but like
- 37:17Speaker 1: part of the reason Bill's not here was his failure
- 37:19Speaker 1: to address the tackle situation. Yeah, how do you see
- 37:21Speaker 1: the last guy move on because he didn't address tackle
- 37:26Speaker 1: and then come in and not addressed tackle.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Right right, I'm just looking up right now, really quickly.
- 37:31Speaker 2: So they took Mapu's seventy sixth overall.
- 37:34Speaker 1: The next tackle off the board is actually, ironically also
- 37:38Speaker 1: in Kansas City, I was Juanya Morris, who is probably
- 37:42Speaker 1: more of a right tackle than a left tackle. But
- 37:45Speaker 1: you have guys like Juanya Morris, I really like Nick Saldeveri,
- 37:49Speaker 1: who went with the very first pick of the fourth round.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Remember that, Yeah, he played left tackle in.
- 37:53Speaker 1: College Blake and then and obviously Dewan Dewan Jones is
- 37:58Speaker 1: the one who was also a right tackle to be
- 38:00Speaker 1: to be fair, to play some left he probably could.
- 38:03Speaker 1: But but here's the thing, if you had a right tackle,
- 38:06Speaker 1: even if you had a right tackle, you uh no,
- 38:10Speaker 1: in never mind, I got my wires cross there. But no,
- 38:12Speaker 1: even if you had a right tackle, you could at
- 38:13Speaker 1: least be playing Mic and Winn to a guard right
- 38:15Speaker 1: now and have that solidified. You still the issue at
- 38:17Speaker 1: left tackle, but it's one less spot. The other thing
- 38:20Speaker 1: I'll say about the Marte Mapu pick was, remember that
- 38:25Speaker 1: year we all thought they were gonna end up making
- 38:27Speaker 1: trades because they just had too many picks, and they
- 38:32Speaker 1: ended up making all of them anyway. Yeah, so could
- 38:33Speaker 1: they have traded up. I'm actually looking up only one
- 38:35Speaker 1: tackle went in the third round before Mark Mapoo, and
- 38:39Speaker 1: it's like fifteen picks earlier. Yeah, and it's Tyler Stein,
- 38:41Speaker 1: who I don't think has been great also kind of
- 38:43Speaker 1: a guard. Right, So all right, there maybe wasn't a
- 38:46Speaker 1: tackle to trade up for.
- 38:48Speaker 2: But I don't know if there's a tackle to trade
- 38:49Speaker 2: up for. But the second guest is certainly taking Mapoo
- 38:52Speaker 2: and taking Jake Andrews. When Dwan Blake Friedland like that,
- 38:56Speaker 2: you know, Wanya Morris, like there were some tackles that
- 38:59Speaker 2: went and range of the draft, and at least again
- 39:02Speaker 2: like I don't know if those guys I keep on
- 39:04Speaker 2: using Joe Thomas, like, I don't know if those guys
- 39:06Speaker 2: were gonna be franchise left tackles in the league. But
- 39:08Speaker 2: at least it was another developmental player to have in
- 39:11Speaker 2: the pipeline, right, And that's the whole point of the draft,
- 39:13Speaker 2: is to just keep on trying to replenish positions and
- 39:16Speaker 2: maintain depth and all that kind of stuff. All right,
- 39:19Speaker 2: let's do key matchups. We don't have to cry about
- 39:23Speaker 2: the tackle situation any longer, Evan.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Evan opens the show saying, we have a game week.
- 39:27Speaker 1: It will be a different show now, and then we
- 39:29Speaker 1: just complain about tackles.
- 39:30Speaker 2: I mean, it's just like we've just done since what.
- 39:34Speaker 2: I didn't even bring up the fact that Drake May
- 39:37Speaker 2: would probably be starting on Sunday if they had a
- 39:39Speaker 2: viable left tackle. But as beside the point, I.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Have a take on that, Okay, I I don't think
- 39:45Speaker 1: you would, and I'm not saying that's right. I actually
- 39:49Speaker 1: do believe I think he'd be starting sooner. I think
- 39:52Speaker 1: they always wanted to start cobset week one.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that's just me. So my take on it is
- 39:59Speaker 2: about the same. Yeah, I would say that they went
- 40:05Speaker 2: into the season, it's a training camp, I should say,
- 40:08Speaker 2: not one hundred percent sure of whether or not Drake
- 40:10Speaker 2: May was gonna be able to play year one because
- 40:13Speaker 2: because of the developmental aspect and all that stuff. Once
- 40:17Speaker 2: they got into training camp, and especially once we got
- 40:19Speaker 2: into the latter part of training camp preseason, of course
- 40:22Speaker 2: drove Mayo outplayed Jacoby were said, right, like you know,
- 40:24Speaker 2: like that those comments, it became clear that Drake was
- 40:27Speaker 2: pushing to start year one. Yeah, so now it went
- 40:30Speaker 2: from the full green Bay Packer model till maybe like
- 40:33Speaker 2: an abbreviated version of the Green Bay Packer model. But
- 40:37Speaker 2: they always seem to want some semblance of holding the clipboard.
- 40:41Speaker 2: So maybe it's we're still into I still feel like
- 40:44Speaker 2: we're in like the four to eight week range for
- 40:46Speaker 2: him to get in there, but it's not gonna be
- 40:48Speaker 2: right once once.
- 40:49Speaker 1: We get past Halloween. I've used Halloween as that date, right, Yeah,
- 40:54Speaker 1: once we get past like week eight, week nine, if
- 40:56Speaker 1: he's still not starting, that's when it will primarily be
- 41:00Speaker 1: about the offensive line. To me, I don't think the
- 41:02Speaker 1: offensive line isn't a factor right now. I don't think
- 41:05Speaker 1: it's the biggest factor. If we get to late October
- 41:08Speaker 1: early November, they're still not winning games and Drake Mays
- 41:11Speaker 1: not out there like we saw the progress he was making,
- 41:14Speaker 1: and they're gonna go behind closed doors now, but like, realistically,
- 41:17Speaker 1: if he continues on that same trajectory, he's going to
- 41:21Speaker 1: clearly pass per set within a month, six weeks something
- 41:25Speaker 1: like that.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Yeah, So I feel for Jacoby. I feel for Jacoby
- 41:29Speaker 2: little because I think a lot of people are not
- 41:33Speaker 2: hoping or wishing or any sort of thing like that.
- 41:36Speaker 2: A lot of people are expecting an injury to open
- 41:40Speaker 2: the door. Right, And maybe this is some drew bledsoe
- 41:45Speaker 2: Tom Brady stuff, right, you know that we all live
- 41:48Speaker 2: through that, and that that's where our heads are at
- 41:50Speaker 2: sometimes even without knowing it. I also seem to hear
- 41:53Speaker 2: a lot about Tyrod Taylor and his poor issue with
- 41:57Speaker 2: the needle right and not open the door for us
- 42:00Speaker 2: and Herbert to start earlier than maybe the Chargers expected.
- 42:05Speaker 2: I feel for Jacoby Brissett because he's in a position
- 42:08Speaker 2: now where the first sign of trouble it's Drake may right,
- 42:13Speaker 2: Like that's what's gonna be on everybody's mind. But also
- 42:15Speaker 2: there's like a little bit of that going on too,
- 42:17Speaker 2: where it's like, well, if he like gets you know,
- 42:20Speaker 2: dinged up in there, it's not like the worst thing,
- 42:22Speaker 2: because then we can, you know, turn this over to Drake.
- 42:24Speaker 2: I definitely feel like the front office and the decision
- 42:28Speaker 2: makers in this organization, Mayo Wolf, are thinking it's best
- 42:34Speaker 2: to sit a young quarterback at first. Yeah, and let's
- 42:39Speaker 2: bring him along slowly, Let's let him develop behind the
- 42:42Speaker 2: scenes behind Jacoby, and when he's one hundred percent ready,
- 42:45Speaker 2: he'll play. But not at ninety not at ninety five.
- 42:48Speaker 2: He's got to be one.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Hundred unless Jakoby gets hurt, unless Jacoby, and then I
- 42:53Speaker 1: guess we're into a case where it's probably like an
- 42:55Speaker 1: abbreviated playbook and like that sort of thing is the
- 42:58Speaker 1: is the direction that they go in a key matchups.
- 43:01Speaker 2: We talked a little bit about Gonzo. That was my
- 43:05Speaker 2: first one. I put down Gonzo versus T Higgins. I
- 43:09Speaker 2: really feel like that's gonna be what they decide to do,
- 43:12Speaker 2: is put him on Higgins. It's the old number two
- 43:16Speaker 2: in the double, the number one thing, right. I just
- 43:18Speaker 2: hope that he can take Higgins. He's not gonna erase
- 43:21Speaker 2: Higgins from the game, I don't think, but at least
- 43:23Speaker 2: let's hope that he can.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Limit the damage.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Limit the damage, yep, and whatever one on one catches,
- 43:28Speaker 2: you give up the t Higgins you kind of have
- 43:29Speaker 2: to live with, and then you hope that you can
- 43:32Speaker 2: really take Jamar Chase out of the game with scheme.
- 43:34Speaker 1: I think the big tests assuming Gonzalz is on Higgins,
- 43:37Speaker 1: which I think we both think is gonna happen, right, Yes, Tackling, Yeah,
- 43:41Speaker 1: Tackling was kind of the big knock on Gonzalez coming
- 43:44Speaker 1: out even early last year. Wasn't something he had to
- 43:47Speaker 1: do a ton because he just wasn't allowing any completions
- 43:51Speaker 1: because he was that good. Which if he can do
- 43:53Speaker 1: that great, none of this matters. But you know, Higgins
- 43:56Speaker 1: is a tight end. He's six four, he's listed it
- 43:59Speaker 1: to twenty five. Would take the over. That's a big, strong,
- 44:02Speaker 1: powerful dude. And like you said, you're gonna like you're
- 44:05Speaker 1: gonna give up catches. He's gonna get his. Yeah, don't
- 44:07Speaker 1: let him extend those by breaking tackles. And some of
- 44:11Speaker 1: that's on Gonzalez. Some of that song guys like Kyle
- 44:13Speaker 1: Duger and Jabrill Peppers and Jalen Hawkins who were on
- 44:15Speaker 1: the back end and flood to the ball and get
- 44:18Speaker 1: Gonzalez help as soon as he can. But that's I
- 44:21Speaker 1: think an underrated part of that matchup and something that
- 44:24Speaker 1: you know, Gonzalez last time he was on the field,
- 44:25Speaker 1: he hurt himself trying to make a tackle and it's
- 44:27Speaker 1: not always easy to go right back to that. So
- 44:30Speaker 1: I think how he tackles Higgins. Ideally he doesn't have
- 44:33Speaker 1: to tackle Higgins, yeah, but realistically he's probably gonna have
- 44:35Speaker 1: to a couple of times. How he tackles against Higgins
- 44:38Speaker 1: is definitely gonna be worth watching. And I think he
- 44:40Speaker 1: could extend that's how he plays in the run game.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good question. It's a good point. And
- 44:43Speaker 2: I do wonder after the injury last year, not that
- 44:46Speaker 2: you completely reinvent yourself, but like this is technique, change
- 44:49Speaker 2: it all a little bit. Last year he was kind
- 44:52Speaker 2: of trying to chop guys down a lot, like just
- 44:54Speaker 2: kind of dive, hurt herself, dive there at his legs
- 44:57Speaker 2: and throw his shoulder into somebody instead of like wrapping
- 44:59Speaker 2: up top. Because he is a smaller guy in that
- 45:01Speaker 2: respect in terms of like his his mass like not
- 45:05Speaker 2: he's obviously a tall guy, but he's not very bulky.
- 45:09Speaker 2: So maybe he changes that style a little bit, but
- 45:11Speaker 2: just for him, and again from you know, a lot
- 45:14Speaker 2: of this is going to be kind of bird's eye
- 45:15Speaker 2: view stuff. I didn't think he was as bad as
- 45:19Speaker 2: some people did in training camp, mainly because I had
- 45:22Speaker 2: just been really confident in what we saw prior in
- 45:25Speaker 2: regular season games, which are much more important than what
- 45:27Speaker 2: he does in practice.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Yeah, but he wasn't great in training camp. He was
- 45:33Speaker 2: to me, he was inconsistent. He was like up and down, uneven,
- 45:37Speaker 2: whatever you want to call it. He needs to be great,
- 45:39Speaker 2: Like he needs to be number one corner status.
- 45:42Speaker 1: You know.
- 45:42Speaker 2: He got an honorable mention on Jeremy Fowler's list of
- 45:46Speaker 2: best cornerbacks in the NFL off of four games from
- 45:49Speaker 2: his rookie season. I remember Faller writing a blurb about him, saying,
- 45:54Speaker 2: if he had played the entire year, then most of
- 45:56Speaker 2: the people he polled would have had him top ten. Right,
- 45:59Speaker 2: So that that's the type of guy that they need
- 46:01Speaker 2: him to be. We talked about it earlier. They don't.
- 46:03Speaker 2: They no longer have Matthew Judah and Christian Barmore in
- 46:06Speaker 2: the pass rush to be a four man rush team
- 46:08Speaker 2: all the time. They are going to have to put
- 46:11Speaker 2: five and six guys into the rush if they're gonna
- 46:13Speaker 2: do that then they're gonna need Christian Gonzalez to be
- 46:15Speaker 2: lights out, Like he's gonna have to be a true
- 46:17Speaker 2: lockdown corner on the outside. It's a big shoes to fill.
- 46:21Speaker 2: It's like a lot of expectations. But the light's gotta
- 46:24Speaker 2: come on now. Like we're not in practice anymore. We're
- 46:27Speaker 2: not gliding through things, we're not trying new stuff like
- 46:30Speaker 2: he used to tell us sometimes in training camp. The
- 46:32Speaker 2: light's gotta switches, gotta flip, and it's gotta stay on now.
- 46:35Speaker 2: And I feel like that's a big challenge for him.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, all.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Right, what's your next one?
- 46:41Speaker 1: So we kind of covered some of mine. I had
- 46:44Speaker 1: just the Patriots rushing attack first. The Bengals front and yeah,
- 46:47Speaker 1: we talked a lot about that off the top of
- 46:50Speaker 1: the show. But you gotta get push, you gotta get
- 46:52Speaker 1: pushed up front. You talked about Laden Robinson, what's gonna
- 46:55Speaker 1: happen at left guard? I know you talked about outside zone,
- 46:57Speaker 1: but this Bengals defense I think is actually a little
- 46:59Speaker 1: bit softer up the middle. So yeah, inside zone stuff,
- 47:03Speaker 1: whatever you want to call it. Some trap.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting that they lost They lost DJ Reader too.
- 47:08Speaker 2: He signed with the.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Lions, so they were placing with rankings. Yeah, but I
- 47:11Speaker 1: think readers a better rank. No, I think he is too,
- 47:13Speaker 1: So that that that's where actually you speak on this
- 47:16Speaker 1: better than me. They want to be outside zone, but really,
- 47:18Speaker 1: if you want to win this game running the ball,
- 47:20Speaker 1: which is what they'll need to do, probably better off
- 47:22Speaker 1: running between the tackles right, yes, to attack them.
- 47:25Speaker 2: So like they'll be like an inside zone duo in
- 47:27Speaker 2: like in terms of inside runs, that's usually what these
- 47:31Speaker 2: teams do that run a lot of outside zone. That's
- 47:33Speaker 2: kind of their inside counter to it, but they don't
- 47:36Speaker 2: do it a ton usually. Like now the Niners in
- 47:39Speaker 2: the Rams have totally pivoted to more duo and inside
- 47:42Speaker 2: zone because everybody plays them for the outside zone, so
- 47:45Speaker 2: they've been doing that more. And maybe that's the case.
- 47:48Speaker 2: Like maybe an Arumo comes out and has wide edges
- 47:52Speaker 2: and you know double edges or whatever it is. Yeah,
- 47:54Speaker 2: you know, to try to like cut off the edge
- 47:57Speaker 2: and they do run it up the middle. That'll be
- 47:59Speaker 2: an interesting part of this chess match. Like this is
- 48:01Speaker 2: one of the other things that I wanted to touch
- 48:02Speaker 2: on a little bit with this game on Sunday that
- 48:04Speaker 2: I'm really interested in looking at this is truly Van
- 48:08Speaker 2: Pelt in DeMarcus Covington's first time scheming and calling plays
- 48:13Speaker 2: and going toe to toe like chess match style right
- 48:16Speaker 2: with another offensive and defensive coordinator. Like, how they do
- 48:21Speaker 2: in that respect is going to be interesting. If the
- 48:23Speaker 2: Bengals are over playing outside zone, Alex van Pelt's got
- 48:27Speaker 2: a pivot like he's got to get them going up that.
- 48:28Speaker 1: We talked about it. These West Coast coaches don't like
- 48:31Speaker 1: doing that. Yeah, it's gonna be interesting to see, all right.
- 48:34Speaker 1: I also just went on with a specific matchup though
- 48:37Speaker 1: on the offensive line. To me, this is even more
- 48:39Speaker 1: so maybe than the Bengals receivers might be the biggest
- 48:43Speaker 1: mismatch on the field on Sunday. Ye chucksa cor four
- 48:46Speaker 1: against Trey Hendrickson is an absolute huge mismatch. So Trey
- 48:52Speaker 1: Henderson last year had seventeen and a half sacks for
- 48:55Speaker 1: the Bengals.
- 48:56Speaker 2: He was outstanding. He's one of the more in my mind,
- 48:59Speaker 2: under rated ed rushers in the NFL. With you on that,
- 49:01Speaker 2: he needs to get a lot more national pub He
- 49:04Speaker 2: is extremely versatile, he's well rounded. I asked Checks about
- 49:07Speaker 2: this yesterday in the locker room, like what's his go
- 49:09Speaker 2: to movie? He's like, well, really, he's got like a
- 49:11Speaker 2: couple of different things he can throw at you. He
- 49:13Speaker 2: throws a bunch of moves at you. He's really sound
- 49:15Speaker 2: with his technique and he can really get after the
- 49:18Speaker 2: pass or they cannot leave CHUCKSI kor For one on
- 49:21Speaker 2: one with Hendrickson too often, Like that has got to
- 49:24Speaker 2: be limited. There's gotta be chips the tight end maybe
- 49:27Speaker 2: stays in six to oh line, like whatever you gotta do.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Sam Hubbard's okay. On the other side, like I wouldn't
- 49:32Speaker 2: overlook Sam Hubbard, but I do feel like on Winn,
- 49:35Speaker 2: who can hold his own against Sam Hubbard Hendrickson is
- 49:38Speaker 2: you've got to throw some extra stuff at him, Like
- 49:41Speaker 2: you can't just expect Chusa kor For to block him
- 49:44Speaker 2: fifteen twenty times on an island in pass protection. That
- 49:47Speaker 2: that's gonna lead to a huge day.
- 49:49Speaker 1: And it's you know, you want to help with the
- 49:51Speaker 1: guard there, but we don't know who the guard is
- 49:52Speaker 1: gonna be, and it's gonna be Nick Leverett or Michael Jordan,
- 49:55Speaker 1: who are essentially backups. So yeah, yeah, that could that
- 49:59Speaker 1: could get ugly it simply put, he needs to be
- 50:04Speaker 1: better he needed or four needs to be better than
- 50:07Speaker 1: he was last time we saw him because the effort
- 50:09Speaker 1: against Washington's not gonna get it done. Yeah.
- 50:11Speaker 2: Absolutely, all right, what's your last one?
- 50:14Speaker 1: My last one? You're gonna roll your eyes.
- 50:16Speaker 2: You're gonna go outside the box, aren't you? Yep?
- 50:18Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 50:19Speaker 2: Good kickoffs? Just the kickoffs against each other? A key
- 50:22Speaker 2: matchup kickoffs? That's not a key match.
- 50:25Speaker 1: All right, I'll give you this then, Brandon Schooler versus
- 50:28Speaker 1: L three for the for the Bengals. How about And
- 50:33Speaker 1: I have to look up because I actually don't know
- 50:35Speaker 1: the name of the Bengals special teams coordinator Ben Jake.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Uh it's uh, where is he? Oh, Darren Simmons, Uh,
- 50:42Speaker 1: Jeremy Springer verus Darren Simmons.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Another coordinator, Jeremy Springer doing this for the first time.
- 50:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, so well every coordinator is doing the kickoffs
- 50:51Speaker 1: for the first time. That's kind of my not yeah there,
- 50:53Speaker 1: everybody kind of kept it. We didn't see too much
- 50:57Speaker 1: in terms of the kickoffs in the preseason. I think
- 50:59Speaker 1: that's what they're doing when they kick us out of practice,
- 51:01Speaker 1: is the kickoff stuff. Like they're keeping us very under wraps.
- 51:05Speaker 1: Everybody's been saving. Everybody's been in the lab for months
- 51:08Speaker 1: and months and months, trying to find the angle, trying
- 51:10Speaker 1: to find the edge, trying to find whatever way to
- 51:12Speaker 1: make these kickoffs work. Because whatever team figures out, I
- 51:15Speaker 1: think there's thirty two teams in the league, we're probably
- 51:17Speaker 1: gonna see ten to twelve different, like really different approaches.
- 51:20Speaker 1: I don't mean different variations of the same approach. I
- 51:23Speaker 1: think you're gonna see eight to ten to twelve truly
- 51:25Speaker 1: different approaches to kickoff coverage and kickoff return this week
- 51:28Speaker 1: around the league. Whoever figures it out, whoever has the
- 51:32Speaker 1: right answer and knows how it works, is gonna have
- 51:34Speaker 1: a tremendous advantage for the first month of the season.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Maybe neither of these teams have like the answer, yeah right,
- 51:40Speaker 1: but somebody's gonna get an advantage off the kickoff. Patriots
- 51:45Speaker 1: need the edge, all the edge they can get. So
- 51:46Speaker 1: I'll give you Jeremy Springer versus Darren Simmons as the
- 51:50Speaker 1: uh I gets as the matchup.
- 51:52Speaker 2: So I have two things on this. Actually, yeah, So
- 51:54Speaker 2: I was talking to Brendan Schooler about this today.
- 51:56Speaker 1: I saw you talking to Brendan Schooler today, I thought
- 51:58Speaker 1: you lost. Yeah.
- 51:59Speaker 2: I was talking to Brendan Schooler and I asked him
- 52:02Speaker 2: two things. The first thing was I was curious about
- 52:04Speaker 2: is Fred actually asked me about this on the show yesterday.
- 52:06Speaker 2: I didn't have an answer, and he was like, flabberg
- 52:08Speaker 2: acid that I didn't know some football minutia bs right.
- 52:12Speaker 2: So I was like, well, now I got to find
- 52:13Speaker 2: an answer. So on offense and defense, right, the offense
- 52:18Speaker 2: makes their substitutions and then the defense has a chance
- 52:20Speaker 2: to match the substitution on kickoff? Who has the last substitution?
- 52:25Speaker 1: Do you know? I'm pretty sure it's the return team.
- 52:28Speaker 2: So that's what Schoolers said, But he said he that's
- 52:31Speaker 2: he even wasn't one hundred percent sure if they would
- 52:33Speaker 2: let if they would hold up the play clock to
- 52:35Speaker 2: like allow you to substitute, or how that would work.
- 52:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 52:37Speaker 1: I think that's more because they huddle up on the sideline. Yeah.
- 52:41Speaker 1: I think it's just the job of somebody on the
- 52:42Speaker 1: coaching staff to look over and see, Okay, they have
- 52:45Speaker 1: the hands team, or they have the heavy team, or
- 52:47Speaker 1: they have the standard team, yeah, and just kind of
- 52:49Speaker 1: adjust from there.
- 52:49Speaker 2: So maybe next time we talk to Springer, I can
- 52:51Speaker 2: actually ask him a question about special team, because.
- 52:54Speaker 1: I'm curious because I didn't even think of that.
- 52:56Speaker 2: Fred's point was, because of the uniqueness of this rule,
- 53:00Speaker 2: there could be a chance where you have different kinds
- 53:02Speaker 2: of blockers for different types of returns.
- 53:06Speaker 1: So in the XFL they did have this, and you
- 53:10Speaker 1: really you had three units. You had the hands team,
- 53:13Speaker 1: which is what it's always been, you didn't really use
- 53:16Speaker 1: that a ton. You had the standard team, which was
- 53:19Speaker 1: mostly tight ends, linebackers, maybe some running backs. And you
- 53:23Speaker 1: had what I know some teams called the heavy unit,
- 53:25Speaker 1: which is linement. Yeah, and that's for return I think kickoff.
- 53:29Speaker 1: It's just standard and heavy and heavy was really only
- 53:33Speaker 1: used when you're kicking off after penalty shortfield. But and
- 53:37Speaker 1: this is just how I don't know that every team
- 53:38Speaker 1: did it this way, and I don't know that this
- 53:40Speaker 1: is going to translate to the NFL, but this is
- 53:42Speaker 1: just kind of how I understood. It was done, very
- 53:44Speaker 1: very base level. So yeah, you would have to look
- 53:47Speaker 1: across and say, all right, they got the standard team.
- 53:49Speaker 1: All right, they got the heavy team. Here's who we
- 53:52Speaker 1: want to send out there.
- 53:53Speaker 2: Second thing that I talked to Schooler about was that
- 53:56Speaker 2: he really feels like it's gonna be probably a month
- 54:00Speaker 2: until you know what this is actually gonna look like,
- 54:03Speaker 2: because he felt like in the preseason it was very vanilla.
- 54:06Speaker 2: Nobody really did anything schematically to try to get an edge.
- 54:10Speaker 2: So he honestly said, none of us really one hundred
- 54:15Speaker 2: percent know what the heck this is gonna look like like.
- 54:17Speaker 2: This could be as a league wants it to be
- 54:20Speaker 2: a dynamic kickoff, or at the end of the day,
- 54:23Speaker 2: this could be just like the old one and it
- 54:25Speaker 2: might be a dut Well.
- 54:26Speaker 1: Here's what I'm watching for. Because touchback they moved. They
- 54:29Speaker 1: moved touch back up to the thirty yeah, right from
- 54:32Speaker 1: the twenty five right, And if it's really scary for
- 54:37Speaker 1: the kicking teams, are they just going to boot touchbacks?
- 54:39Speaker 1: Now we know the NFL can continue changing the rules
- 54:42Speaker 1: up to week four. If you start seeing teams pushing touchbacks,
- 54:47Speaker 1: I would not be surprised if the touchback becomes the
- 54:50Speaker 1: forty yard line, just like it is if you missed
- 54:52Speaker 1: the uh anywhere else? Yeah, yep, if you I think,
- 54:57Speaker 1: if you right now, if you bounce it into the
- 54:59Speaker 1: landing zone and the into the end zone for a touchback,
- 55:02Speaker 1: the ball only comes out to the twenty. But that's very,
- 55:04Speaker 1: very hard to do. I think anything short of that
- 55:07Speaker 1: it would not surprise me. If it's just all right,
- 55:09Speaker 1: the ball didn't land in the landing zone first, it
- 55:11Speaker 1: landed anywhere else forty yard line And some people may say,
- 55:15Speaker 1: all right, well they'll just take the forty yard line.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Give Patrick Mahomes a sixty yard field for every single
- 55:20Speaker 1: one of his drives and see if you have a
- 55:22Speaker 1: real chance to win that game. Right, Give Lamar Janssen,
- 55:25Speaker 1: Give give chance at Mamar Jackson.
- 55:27Speaker 2: Like Harrison Bucker. You need like twenty yards to be
- 55:30Speaker 2: in field goal range if you're in the Chiefs.
- 55:32Speaker 1: At that Giblamar Jackson, justin Tucker a sixty yard field
- 55:36Speaker 1: on every one of his drives, and see if you
- 55:38Speaker 1: have a chance to win that game. No, it's it's
- 55:40Speaker 1: going to force teams to actually do this, and to
- 55:42Speaker 1: your point, that's what the league wants. Don't be surprised
- 55:45Speaker 1: that the touchback gets moved up. And if it doesn't
- 55:47Speaker 1: happen this year, because that is kind of a big
- 55:49Speaker 1: change to make in season, they might get pushed back. Yeah,
- 55:51Speaker 1: next year, definitely by next year. Touchback is going to
- 55:53Speaker 1: be a forty.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Last thing on the kickoffs. Yeah, you mentioned it, and
- 55:56Speaker 2: I couldn't agree with you more. The Patriots, and I'm
- 55:59Speaker 2: saying it's about something on special teams. Yes, the Patriots
- 56:02Speaker 2: need every single edge that they can possibly get. They
- 56:05Speaker 2: have Marcus Jones might be the best return man in
- 56:08Speaker 2: football when he's healthy. This has to be a good one.
- 56:12Speaker 2: This has to be a dynamic kickoff for the New
- 56:14Speaker 2: England Patriots. They need to figure out ways to flip
- 56:17Speaker 2: field position with this rule like, this has to be
- 56:21Speaker 2: something that they're good at because they're not gonna be in.
- 56:24Speaker 1: The coverage team too. They can't be given up.
- 56:27Speaker 2: They're not going to be a great offensive team. I
- 56:29Speaker 2: think we all know that. So if they are going
- 56:31Speaker 2: to have a chance to score some points that we're
- 56:33Speaker 2: not expecting them to score, it's gonna come on these
- 56:36Speaker 2: on special teams and on kickoffs. So this has to
- 56:39Speaker 2: be something they're good at. There's to me, there's a
- 56:41Speaker 2: little bit of pressure there on Jeremy Springer like he's
- 56:44Speaker 2: This has got to be good for them. They have
- 56:46Speaker 2: to be a dynamic kickoff for team, kickoff return team,
- 56:49Speaker 2: and punt return team because of the way that they
- 56:52Speaker 2: are going to be offensively. Like if Marcus Jones is
- 56:55Speaker 2: Devin Hester and the league is a terrified of him,
- 56:57Speaker 2: that's a big thing for the Patriots that they can.
- 56:59Speaker 1: Use, especially if that touchback hits moved up, because I mean, look,
- 57:03Speaker 1: we don't know where Drake May's at yet, but who knows.
- 57:07Speaker 1: Maybe Drake May is one of those guys. He can't
- 57:08Speaker 1: give a sixty yard field if they moved the touchback up.
- 57:10Speaker 1: But yeah, you're exactly right. And look, they have a
- 57:12Speaker 1: good punter. Bryce Berenger was might have been their best
- 57:14Speaker 1: player this summer. He was great. Yeah, they have a
- 57:16Speaker 1: good punter punt return they'll you know, like you said,
- 57:20Speaker 1: Marcus Jones, good returner. They lost later, but the reality
- 57:23Speaker 1: is that they take a step back. They lost later.
- 57:25Speaker 1: Everybody's gonna look at that. It's all about the kickoff
- 57:27Speaker 1: when it comes to to singer.
- 57:28Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a springer.
- 57:30Speaker 1: It's all about the kickoff.
- 57:30Speaker 2: Okay, So last key matchup for me and then I
- 57:33Speaker 2: promise we'll take some of these phone calls. I know
- 57:34Speaker 2: you guys have been waiting. Keon White versus Trent Brown
- 57:39Speaker 2: just because I want to see it like I yeah, yeah,
- 57:41Speaker 2: it's just like it's just one of those things now.
- 57:44Speaker 2: I also, when I wrote my game plan for this week,
- 57:46Speaker 2: which is up now on Patriots dot Com, my big
- 57:48Speaker 2: preview for the game, I actually singled out Cordell Volson
- 57:52Speaker 2: in their left guard, but I didn't want to get
- 57:54Speaker 2: too like I left guards and put you all to sleep.
- 57:56Speaker 2: But they're gonna have to take Keon White like a
- 57:59Speaker 2: chess piece. Find the weakest link on the opponent's offensive line,
- 58:02Speaker 2: and on third down, he should be rushing over that guy.
- 58:05Speaker 2: Whether it's the left guard, it's the right tackle, it's
- 58:08Speaker 2: the you know, the center, like wherever they are. They
- 58:11Speaker 2: need to find Waldo on the offensive line and try
- 58:14Speaker 2: to get Keon White to expose him. It reminds me
- 58:17Speaker 2: so much of how they use Trey Flowers in the end,
- 58:19Speaker 2: like in like seventeen eighteen, where every single time it
- 58:23Speaker 2: was third down, Trey Flowers, whoever your worst offensive lineman was,
- 58:27Speaker 2: they would get a one on one in the pass
- 58:29Speaker 2: rush for Trey Flowers. That's what they have to turn
- 58:31Speaker 2: Keon White into. So Volson at left guard is probably
- 58:34Speaker 2: they're they're truly their worst offensive lineman in pass protection.
- 58:38Speaker 2: But we all know the Trent Brown experience, like he's
- 58:40Speaker 2: either gonna be locked in or he's not, And if
- 58:42Speaker 2: he's not, then Keon White should have a week.
- 58:44Speaker 1: I think he's gonna be locked in former team that
- 58:46Speaker 1: it did not end well with against guys he knows.
- 58:49Speaker 1: I think you're gonna see a pretty good version Trent.
- 58:51Speaker 1: I agree. I The former team thing I think is
- 58:53Speaker 1: this week we'll see about the whole seed. But they
- 58:55Speaker 1: also have a Maryus Mims coming back. He's banged up.
- 58:57Speaker 1: But yeah, I think we're going pretty version Trump Brown
- 59:00Speaker 1: this week.
- 59:01Speaker 2: I do, Alex, Do you need something to do before
- 59:03Speaker 2: next week's kickoff? Why not get your living room game

- 1:00:04Speaker 4: thrown you guys, I'll.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: Take it off the Thanks Eddie, thanks for the call.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: I I think Jalen Polk's gonna be your starting zer
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: receiver on Sunday.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: I really do. If he doesn't technically start, you know,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: kJ Osborne might start as the veteran, but he's gonna
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: Polks can play a long Yeah.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: Look, he's he's one of those guys that in the NFL.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: He's gonna live over the middle of the field. He's
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: gonna be running crossing routes. He's gonna be running slants,
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: he's gonna be running things into the middle of the field.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: One of the things, you know, just talking to some
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: people you know on that Washington staff during the draft,
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: uh Tyler Hughes even you know here the Patriots now,
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: they felt like Jalen Polk's route running was not truly
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: showcase in that Washington offense, like you watch that wasn't
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: Yeah you watch that, yeah that you watch that Washington
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: offense as much as anybody. They were a four verts
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: like vertical stem down the field.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: In a straight line, maybe a deep post Michael Pennix
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: will put it on your hands.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, like deep cross maybe was like the most
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: horizontally cutting route that they ran. And they didn't really
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: feel like he was able to showcase how good he
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: can be at the top of the route. And in
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: this offense, maybe he gets to do that a little
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: bit more. I've been slow to the punch with Jalen
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: Polk just because you know, we've been over this before.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: Like I like the guys that are fast and separating
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: things like that.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: He's Taekwon.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: That's not true. That's not necessarily his game. But he
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: to me is poised for a pretty good year. I
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: really feel like he's gonna be good.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: So I wrote this morning like a expectations for each
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: of the Patriots rookies, like one by one, and I said,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: obviously May has the most pressure in the highest expectations.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: But yeah, if we're talking immediately, it's Jalen Polk, and
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: it's not just because he's the second pick. It's because
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: he's in a position where they're gonna need him right away. Yeah,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: they don't have you know, it's on a high end
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: talent wide receiver. He plays a role, it's very, very
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: crucial in the Saw offense. He's a guy I think
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: you should look for a big production early. On that
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: being said, I think for him, look, you want everybody
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: to score touchdowns and hit explosive plays. But we've talked
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: about this. He's a chain mover. He's not a big
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: play threat. That's Thwarton or Jayvon Baker is. To me,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: you're measuring Jalen Polk's success in catches and in first
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: downs more than receiving yards in touchdowns. If that makes sense. Yeah,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: is he just keeping the change we like we all
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: thought Kobe Myers was a pretty good receiver. He has
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: scored touchdowns to year three.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: Yes, I just pulled up Jacoby's numbers because I was
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: curious about this. So Jacoby in his last two years
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: with the Patriots. I know it's a different offense and
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: all that stuff, but just you know, bear with me
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: for now eighty three for eight sixty six and.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Twenty twenty one.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: Mac Jones' rookie year, that's ten point four yards per catch,
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: two touchdowns. His last year in New England twenty twenty two,
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: he was sixty seven for eight h four. That was
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: a big touchdown year for him. He had six touchdowns
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: that year. Yeah, twelve yards per catch, between ten and
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: twelve yards per catch between let's call it sixty and
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: seventy catches for Jalen Polk as a rookie, that's about
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: where I feel like he's going to be. It might
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: be sixty for six hundred, right, but it's gonna be
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: like to your point, if it's sixty for six hundred,
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: but a lot of those come on third and seven
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: where he's getting eight yards, then that's sort of the
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: role that they had in mind for him. And I
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: do think that he can live up to that.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: So using that twenty twenty one season, because obviously in
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: twenty twenty two things kind of went Hey, w are
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: at the quarterback position? Yeah, Jacoby Myers. In terms of
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: passing first downs, Jacoby Myers caught about a quarter of
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: the Patriots first downs that went to receivers. Like, that's
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: what you're looking for for Jalen Polk that first is
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: he keeping them moving the chains? And then we get
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: in the red zone you're looking at you know, red
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: zone threats like Hunter Henry or just running the ball. Yep?
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: But is he helping them extend drives and move the chains?
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: That's what he's here to do. Yep? Absolutely, all right,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: madis in Virginia sixth part? That wasn't it or whatever? Oh?
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah there was. We'll get I'll bring it back up.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: What's up? Back? Go ahead?
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: Hey, So I was having an argument on Twitter.
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: I know, stupid.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: We all do it. It's okay. I did it yesterday.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: I regret it.
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: They were trying to say that we can move big
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: Mike to left tackle. I was trying to tell him
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: that a three hundred and fifty pound Mike and win
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: who won't be very good at a position where you
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: need to be more agile. But you know, they were
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: trying to say I was wrong. So I'm just curious
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: to see what you guys think about that, because to
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: me personally, at least Mike and Win, who is not
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: a left tackle, he's barely a right tackle. He's a
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: very good guard. I'm just curious what you guys think.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the call, Matt at don't worry. We
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: all argue on Twitter more than we should. That is
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: that is one of my I try not to.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: But I just I don't know why yesterday was different.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: I'm with yeah.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: I mean him at right tackle is already pushing it
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: He's just not a left tackle.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: Honestly, when they tried to play him at left guard,
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: he kind of struggled a little bit with that too.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: I think he's the right side of the line player.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: That's just where he prefers to play, it seems like,
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: and where they prefer to play him. So no, not
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: a left tackle. The other question that the caller before
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: asked us about you Bell right his role in the offense.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: Yeah, so Bell, I'm not expecting a ton from Bell
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: out of the gate. He gives the coaching staff an
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: opportunity to get really creative and try some different things
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: because he's not a traditional fight end. He's more of
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: an h back move, tight end, fall back, that kind
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: of thing, and that's a role you build on. But
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: I also wonder if the coaching staff, because there are
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: so many new pieces, wants to get the base of
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: the offense down first. Bell's the kind of guy whose
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: role grows as the year goes on. Yeah, so I'm
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: not gonna be super worried if we don't see a
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: ton from him early on, but like again, it's gonna
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: be kind of he's never gonna be, you know, a
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: seventy percent used to drake guy. He's probably gonna hang
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: around forty percent, and it's gonna be kind of not
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: gadget plays, but like a little gimmicky, and you kind
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: of want to build out your core offense first. Before
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: you get to that. They will have an opportunity to
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: get creative, and I think getting him in the mix
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: as you go on throughout the year would be good. Yeah,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: but I wouldn't be surprised if he has a quiet
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: start and his push comes a little later on.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, and look, he's a seventh round pick.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: At the end of the day, you're not expecting you
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: shouldn't have to. I agree that almost like Pop Douglas,
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: He's not a normal seventh round pick. Pop was a
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: sixth round pick because he went to a small school
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: and because of his size. Right, yea, Jane Bell fell
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: through the crass because what is he? Is he a
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: full back? Is he an h back? Is he a
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: tight end? Is he a receiver? Is he running back? Like, yeah,
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: the versatility is great, but a lot of NFL teams
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: are gonna be stressed out by the versatility and like,
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: we don't know where to what to actually do with
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: this guy. The way that to me, where Jahem Bell
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: gets on the field early is in like two tight
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: end packages. If they want a more explosive ball carrier
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: on some of the things near the line of scrimmage,
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: you know, a slide route, dumps in the flats, like
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: off those bootleg actions and play action plays. If they
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: feel like you know, Austin Hooper, Hunter Henry really solid
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: players at what they do and where they're gonna fit,
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: but they feel like they just need a little bit
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: more juice out of that spot, then that's Jaheen Bell's
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: best path to the roster. I was excited about some
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: of the things he did in the preseason because those
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: were the types of routes he was running, you know,
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: crossing route from Joe Milton over the middle, a little
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: dump off in the flat from Drake may for eleven
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: yards like those are the types of players that are
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: gonna get him on an NFL roster and like stick
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: in the league. So I'm still excited about Jaim Bell,
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: but I'm with you, it's it's probably going to be
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: a little bit slower. I want I want to answer
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: some of these emails now too, and then we'll do
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: our our predictions for the year. Question from David here
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: in Madrid about the differences between the Mayo Covington defense
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: and the and the Belichick defense, I would just call
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: us back in like two or three weeks, like give
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: us some regular season games to look at. I think
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: we were a little bit early for that. It's a
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: really good question, and I'm looking forward to digging into it.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: We'd actually see the Mayo yeah.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: Right, we don't know one hundred percent. The one thing
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: I will say is that I do feel like they're
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: going to try to get vertical a little bit more
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: on the line of scrimmage. Like, I don't think they're
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: going to be quite as two gap heavy, not.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: Is focused on contained. I think they're going to be
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: more aggressive.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, which I like, especially for some of those
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: players that they have, you know, O'Shane Zemenez, josh U
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: Ja Like uj just feels so out of place trying
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: to be that kind of guy that contains at the
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: edge player. If they're gonna get him back to twenty
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: twenty two josh U j then it's gonna be slim
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: back down, be the finesse rusher that got in his
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: ears back. Yeah, and let him pin in his ears back.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: And I'll say this, like, if they are gonna do that,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: Joe Burrow is not a bad test because he's not
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: a statue. But he's also not a guy that you
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: have to worry about taking off and running a ton,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: especially coming off an injury. He's not going on to
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: take hits. You can lose contain on Joe Burrow and
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: it won't. The Patriots won't lose this game because they
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: lost contain on Joe Burrow. Let's put it that way.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Yeah, he did run for a third down conversion in
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: the game a couple of years ago, but it was
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: like third and four that he picked up like eight yards.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: He's not a runner.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: He's not immobile, like he's not a statue, but he's
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: not really a runner either. I wouldn't say with Burrow right.
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: This question from Carlos Los Pats.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: Look.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: He asked about Gerard Mayo's appearance on Devon Godshaw's podcast.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: I didn't get to listen to the whole podcast yet,
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: but I did hear on Twitter. I saw some of
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: the quotes and some of the snippets, and this was
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: a quote from Mayo, which is just music to my ears,
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: because you know how much I love these kind of quarterbacks.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: This is Mayo talking the game has changed with the
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: extended plays, dual threat. I'm not talking about Michael Vick.
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: I'm talking about just extending plays. If you have that
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: skill set. To me, that's the most important thing. So
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: to Mayo, he's a defensive guy. And the two ways
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: that I always look at it are one through the
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: prism of the defense, like what would you not want
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: to defend the most, like what's the hardest thing to defend?
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: The other thing is through the prism of the offensive
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: coordinator or the play caller, which is you don't want
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: to have any physical limitations with the quarterback where you're
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: thinking to yourself, we can't call this play because he
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: can't make that throw. Like, you don't want to have
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: to think like that if you're a coordinator. May to
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: me has always checked both those boxes where he's got
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: the off script stuff that Mayo was talking about with
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: Gotcha that makes defensive coordinators just stay up late at
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: night because they're like, well, we could have the original
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: play on this third and eight covered correctly, and then
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: all of a sudden he breaks contain, gets outside the
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: pocket and makes something stupid happen, and now all of
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: a sudden they're still on the field. Those are the
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: plays that he can make. We saw it a little bit,
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: you know, obviously got called back, but we saw it
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: a little bit in the Washington game, and it's good
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: to hear that from Meo. Now, Carlos says that he
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: feels like this is Mayo saying that Drake may could
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: start right away, and he still feels like Drake that
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: Drod Mayo would have started Drake on Sunday and maybe
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: I guess, you know, Elliot Wolf and some of the
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: other people in the organization push back on that. Dude,
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: where do you fall on that?
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: No, because it's a big picture thought, it's not. Yeah,
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: I guess I'd say it's a big picture of philosophy thought,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: not week one. He can believe that's what you need
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: from a quarterback and also believe it's best for rookie
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: quarterbacks not start right away, like both those things can
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: be true.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, it's his thought here with god Shaw is
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: more of like a draft philosophy in terms of skill
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: set and like evaluating the player. We don't know what's
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: going on behind closed doors with why Drake May isn't
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: playing yet they've told us that it's mostly mental. It's
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: you know, making checks at the line of scrimmage, knowing
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: how to handle protections and pressure packages and all that
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: kind of stuff. Obviously, we all feel that some of
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: it has to do with what's going to be around him.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: That's a factor in all of this. You don't want
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: him to get in there and play playground football too often,
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: Like you want that to be when the cape comes
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: on and he's got to but you don't want that
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: to be like, the basis of the offense is Drake
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: may just running around like a chicken and trying to
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: find something and do something with the ball, because that's
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: not a good habit to start that that's all that
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: he's good at. I'll just give you an example that
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: to me is Zach Wilson. Zach Wilson with the Jets
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: had these moments where he'd make some crazy out of
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: structure throws down the field. He couldn't hit the broadside
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: of a barn in the pocket right like that.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: That was the issue.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: And if you can't be an in structure thrower first
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: and then improviser second, then it's really difficult to make.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Problem is you can't even the greats can't make those
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: improvate improvisational throws on a regular enough basis. Mahomes is
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: probably the closest, but like Zach Wilson would try to
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: improvise and throw the ball with Devin McCarty four times
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: in again like a freaking arm pun.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, So that's where I stand on that.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: Another question here, Oh we don't really talk about this
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: stuff a ton on this show, but I just got
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: to get something off my chest. Cut about this so
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: they must have been talking about this on Unfiltered.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: Not the IU contract. No, all right, I'm talking about that.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: One full disclosure. I wasn't on Unfiltered for the whole show,
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: so I'm not one hundred percent sure. But this was
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: about Bill Belichick. And now he's on Instagram. Now he's
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: got seventeen meters jobs and all this kind of stuff,
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: and I'm not gonna lie to you, Alex. A part
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: of me feels like it's a little hypocritical, like just
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: a little bit, and I'm going go live your best life, right,
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: like I go live your best life. Just go live
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: your best life, Bill. But at the same time, it
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: does feel as a media person, it feels a little
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: hypocritical because he could not have looked down on the media,
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: especially the local media, more than that human being did.
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: Like nobody could top Bill Belichick's I wouldn't call it
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: necessarily disdain, but just like no interest whatsoever in the
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: media and what we did. And now all of a sudden,
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: he's on inside the NFL, he's on with McAfee, he's
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: gonna be on with the Mannings, He's on Instagram, He's
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: on all those types of things. It hurts a little bit.
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: It hurts my feelings just a little bit.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: I'm not colle things. First off, you've never seen somebody
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: have like a total uh. You've never seen one of
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: your friends pull like a total one to eighty after
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: break up and just completely reinvent themselves. It's possible, right
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: look at me. Look look, oh you didn't think I
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: could do this? Look where I'm at. As for the
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: social media thing, like, look, I'm not Bill Belichick, I
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: don't mean to say that, but like I don't love
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: social media. I don't love using it Twitter. I've always
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: kind of known I needed I use I never had
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: any interest in getting Instagram. I still don't like it.
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: But at one point one of my employers was like,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: you're gonna work in media, you need Instagram. If like
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: Bill Belichick's on Instagram because one of his employers, like
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Underdog or whoever, said you need to be on Instagram
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: to promote the show Bill's not doing. He recorded that
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: little intro video, That's the last time he's ever gonna
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: see that thing. That's my guess is they will post
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: clips from his show. There will be pre planned things
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: that are put out there that is not run by him.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: If I see Bill Belichick doing you know, Instagram stories
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: where he's holding the phone up and doing selfies and like, oh,
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: I'm out getting a burrito bowl, Like yeah, then I'd
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: kind of call that a little hypocritical. But if you're
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: gonna work in media, the reality is you need social
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: media because that's where all the stuff's promoted. That's how
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: you get to people. Somebody else is gonna run that
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: for him. That I don't find hypocritical.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: I don't find then I have no problem with the
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: social media aspect. The problem that I have with with
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: what he's been doing is that is more so like
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: I understand that this is a little inside baseball and
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: nobody actually cares about our feelings, and that's totally fine.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: But the bottom line is is that he was fought out,
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: difficult to deal with like he was it was difficult
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: to do your job.
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: Here's the thing I would care about if he went
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: out and did a bad job, that would annoy the
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: crap out of me. Yeah, because it's like, you're Bill Belichick.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: You have more knowledge on this subject than anybody. You're
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: now in a position to share that knowledge more than
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: you were because obviously he's not gonna share his complete
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: knowledge when he's coaching the team. That's his advantage. He's
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: not gonna give that advantage away outside of maybe you know,
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: little blips here and there. I loved when they did
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: the NFL hundred year team that was on. That's one
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: of my favorite pieces. I'll check content, but.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: He's he's good at it, Like he's been trying to
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: sit here and I don't think he's press conference.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Bill on TV Guy segment they did on Around the
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: NFL is awesome. Yeah, that was great, Like give me
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: more of that. If he was gonna come out and
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: be cookie cutter and like not be himself, I would
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: be annoyed by it. So far, everything I've seen from him,
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: I've really liked. And he's been different between different shows too.
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: And this is where I feel like I can relate
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: to him a little bit. Because few people are doing
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: more podcasts than I am. Bill Belichick is on the
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: list and part of the key of it. You talked
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: in the open how you liked how I did the
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: move the micro fund away thing. Shout out to the
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: dedicated listeners who noticed I also did that on Patriots
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: Be and I try not to do that. I liked
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: that bit, so I brought it over. But you gotta
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: find a fine line between you don't want to be
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: changing your takes and changing your on air persona between shows,
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: but you can't have every show be the same thing
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: because then people won't tune in. So far it's early,
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: I would say he's done a very good job of that,
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: and I can attack. I'm not trying to. I know, Oh,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: you're not Bill in this sense. I think I do
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: have a little bit of a right to compare myself
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: to him. It's not easy to do that. So far,
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: he's done it. You can tell me of going off
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: the deep beend there, but I think it's fair to
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: make that comparison.
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: You do wear a podcast than anybody I know. That's
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: that's for sure. And except Bill. Now, well, I'm not
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: gonna sit here and act like I really know Bill.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: So I know he's got the hang on, He's got
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: the Underdog show and podcast shows. Obviously, these shows are
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: much bigger inside the shows that I do. But if
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: we're talking pure volume inside the NFL Manning Cast Underdog,
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: I feel like there's a fourth one too that I'm Oh,
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: he just added thirty third team.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I just I your volume. I mean, how the
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: tables have turned. Yeah, now, all of a sudden, the
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: media ain't so bad when they're paying you. Huh, that's
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: how it works.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: Meanwhile, I have this Patriots Beat Sports Hub Patriots Podcast
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: Sunday Morning show. All right, we're like neck for neck there.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: I might have to add this show to get back.
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: Out of just, you know, stroke your ego a little
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: bit more over.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: Not an egos.
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: I'm just saying, all right, all right, I digress about Bill.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: He does a good job for the most part, and
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: I I really do believe that this is a likability thing.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: He is trying to repair his image. I don't think
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: he's gonna do this forever. I really believe he'll be
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: back in coaching next year. One of these teams, Eagles, Cowboys,
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: maybe Buffalo are gonna fire their coach because they have
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: a bad season and or you know, don't Cowboys don't
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: meet expectations, and they'll hire Bill because there'll be one
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: year Jerry Jones, like eighty something years old. He's gonna
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: want to chase a ring before he gives it up.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: And my guess is that that's the way it will go.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: But it is interesting because he I didn't think that
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: this is the route that Bill would take.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: I didn't. I thought there'd be something I thought he
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: would do, like a like inside the NFL, like one
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: show or maybe like a one like something with NFL
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: films where it's not like a regular show.
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: But it's like his shit, like a detail all type thing.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: Yeah, like once a month, every other week he'd come
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: on and it would just be like loose format. I
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: did not think he was gonna be all over the
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: place like this. I didn't. All right, although sorry, you know,
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: I tell you because he it tells me he's not
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: done with coaching. Because part of the reason I thought
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: he'd only do one thing is I thought he'd want
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: to enjoy retirement. To me, in my mind, he's not
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: remotely close to retire.
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: No, No, if he wanted to enjoy retirement, he would
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: have just walked off into the sunsight.
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: But he didn't do that. But it would have really
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: been really easy for him to walk off into sunset
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: now and say, all right, I'm gonna take the year off,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: see how I feel, and depending on how I feel,
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: come back to coaching. He's trying to stay as involved
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: as much as possible.
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: Yeah, this is definitely an image thing, like he wants
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: to repair his image. Oh look, I you know, this
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: is what I'm actually like. You know, I'm I'm a
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: likable guy. You know I can have fun. I can,
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: you know, let my hair down a little bit.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: I'm not.
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: Yeah, the stoic press conference bill is that that's a
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: different version of building what happens behind closed doors.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: So now he's wild. Next year when he's back coaching,
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: to see him go back into that mode. Yeah, it was.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: This bill is not coming when he goes and coaches.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: This bill is temporary. Yeah, agreed.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: All right, let's talk some big picture league stuff and
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: Patriots stuff. So what I what we did was we
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: have a couple of categories here, m VP, Rookie of
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: the Year, Breakout Player of the Year, and biggest disappointment.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: Uh for we're gonna do Patriots and then we're gonna
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: do the whole league. Right, We're gonna do both. Okay,
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: so let's start with Patriots MVP. Who do you got
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: so the most valuable players?
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: David Andrews. If we're gonna do that, like he's the
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: player they can least afford to you to lose. I
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: think the best player is going to be Gonzalez. I
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: actually think he's gonna bounce back. I think he's gonna
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: have a really good year.
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: Okay, this is gonna surprise you.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: I went through andre I that's a good one.
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: I understand a lot of It's gonna be the offensive line.
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: If he doesn't have the blocking, it's gonna it's I'm
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: gonna be totally wrong. It's gonna look like last year
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: But I.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: Just feel like he's poised for a decent year and
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: he's gonna get so much volume that at the end
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: of the year, he's gonna be over a thousand with
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: you know, some touchdowns and things like that.
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: So I want to push back on the volume thing.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: You know how I feel about this. Yes, do not
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: run ramondra Stevenson into the ground. Don't do it again.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: He has talked about how the workload was too much.
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: You saw it's fitting Bengals week. We're talking about this.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: After that fumble. He talked about being worn down by
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: the workload he had that year, and I'm just using
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: I'm just saying this for round numbers. I think Remondri.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: You were gonna get more out of vermondre Stevenson giving
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: you two hundred touches, yeah, than you are out of
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: Vermandra Stevenson giving you two hundred and fifty. It's gonna
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: be fresher. He's even more explosive. I'm talking about, can
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: you find four to five touches a game that can
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: go elsewhere? Antonio Gibson is as good of a back
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: as they've had since Damien Harris left. He might be better.
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: I like that. I'm very high on Damien Harris. But
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: you have a good left hook, you have a good
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: second option keeper Mandra around fifteen to twenty touches per
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: game rather than twenty five, and I think it would
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: will be absolutely worth it in the long run. I
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: still think he could be the team MVP with those
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: lesser touches because he's gonna be more explosive and he's
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: gonna be make more out of the touches he has.
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: But Evan, we go through this every single year.
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: This is your Roman Empire, and I'm right. I'm not
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: saying you're run.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: And I'm right. I would like to think in Cleveland,
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: Van Pelt and that coaching staff did a great job.
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: Now Chubb suffered a freak injury, and that happens with
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: running backs. They right, you can't guarantee they saley, but
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: they would even go down. They was named Felton. Yeah,
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: they would goal like three four backs deep. They would
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: run three four deep. Dearness Johnson, AAF legend, Darness Johnson.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: They would run three four backs deep every week and
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: it wasn't an equal distribution, but they did a very
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: good job of keeping your backs fresh. The teams didn't
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: rely on Bell cow backs to be competitive. They are,
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: they're they're good, but they always fall off in December.
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: Whether it was the Cowboys with Zeke, whether it was
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: the Titans with Derrick Henry. I'm gonna kind of put
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: the Ravens in here because Lamar carries a big load
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: in that running game and he would get beat up.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: Those teams always fall off late because the NFL is
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: too physical to truly dominate start to finish with the
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: Bell cow back anymore. You it can't be done. You can.
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: I think you can dominate running the ball, and we
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: disagree there. I think you can dominate running the ball,
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: but it's got to be by committee. And I would
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: hope the Patriots embrace that this year and we get
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: to see the best of Hermandre Stevenson.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: I'm still with that being said.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: Two hundred touches in a lot, No, he's still gonna
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: have a lot. To fifteen instead of top five in
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: touches is basically what I'm asking.
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: Fair enough, they're gonna try to run the ball.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: They're try to run the ball, but they got multiple
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: backs and you got end rounds with Pop Douglas and
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: Drake may in factor in the run game. Once he's
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: in there, it doesn't all have to be handoffs tom
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: Andre Stevenson, and it doesn't have to be And I
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: don't know how many games they'll be up in like this,
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: but Evan, you know that you called this my Roman Empire.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: The Roman Empire is the thing. The Roman Empire. Roman
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: Empire is that twenty twenty two game against the Lions.
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: Why where they're up, where they're up multiple scores, like
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: three minutes to go, and it's half back dive to
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: Ramondre Stevenson when Kevin Harris is right there. Ramondre does
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: not need to be taking those hits. You need to
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: trust another back enough to kind of take the less
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: important carries and save Ramondre Stevens in for when it matters.
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: So a more efficient potentially Ramondre Stevenson. I think he's
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: poised for a big year, and like I said, I
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: still think he can have a big year. This is
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: not me saying play Remondre unless he sucks. This is
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: just me saying, be.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: Mindful of the workload you're putting on on on him
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: over the course of the season.
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: Fair enough. I love that take from you. Who's your
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: league MVP this year?
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson?
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: Back to back?
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: Yep, back to back? And I think that the addition
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: of are we doing Super Bowl picks too?
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: We can if come on, I did division. I didn't
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: think about this.
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: The addition of Derrick Henry is so important in Baltimore,
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: so important because the big issue for people talk about
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: Lamar is like he can't win games late in the
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: season and he can't win playoff games and he hasn't.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: I'm not saying it's it's unfair, but.
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: The AFC Championship Game last year and.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: He lost and people get on him for not being
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: a big game. Am I wrong in saying that narrative exists?
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: It does so but I think he's different than your
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: average like Choker, than your average like Peyton Manning or
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: Josh Allen because he does I love Josh Allen.
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: What big game is?
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: Josh Allen is sorry, No, I'm sorry, you tell him.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: I'll sit here and wait, you tell me what big game.
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: Josh Allen's wont to just finish the take. This is
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: a regular season award. By the way, I think it's different. Well,
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: we're gonna get I said, want to do super Bowl picks.
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: We're gonna get with with Lamar Jackson is different because
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: he takes so much more of a physical toll and
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: a lot of the times when the Ravens get late
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: in the year, he's just beat up or not even playing.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: They had Tyler Huntley's start a playoff game, yeah, last year,
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: two years ago, whatever it was. Derrick Henry can now
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: take a huge part of that beating. And I think
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: you're gonna see this goes back to my take with
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: with with Ramondre kind of. I think you're gonna be
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: see Lamar Jackson be a lot more efficient this year,
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: and I think you're gonna see him do more as
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: a passer. And I just think he I love the
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: setup they have for him. And you know me, I
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: was not always a big Lamar Jackson fan. Yeah, I
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: love the set. Talk about building it around your quarterback.
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: I love the setup they have for him.
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: Right, I'm a little skeptical, and we'll see tonight. I'm
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: a little skeptical.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: So I also this should be your take. The other
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: reason I really like this. Yeah, Zay Flowers year two,
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: Zay Flowers, big jump hear two.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a little skeptical of Derrick Henry in this offense.
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: I'm not gonna lie to you. Dereck Henry to me,
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: is quarterback hunder center, Derek Henry eight yards in the backfield,
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: turn it around and hand it off. They run their
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: offense in Baltimore out of the shotgun.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: They run out of pistol there Mount.
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: Yeah, they run some pistol. But there you're asking, like
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: a two hundred and forty pound Derrick Henry to start
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: from his standstill now and not have that run up
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: to the line of screens.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: I think you're gonna do less of that.
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: So you think you're gonna be under center, no more
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: pistol still like you're still pistol. Pistol is still not
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: the same run up that.
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: I think they're gonna create ways for Derrick Henry to
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: function in this offense. Okay, I hear you. I just
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: it's it's a little bit of a weird stylistic fit. Yeah.
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: Like when I think about the best back for Lamar Jackson,
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: I would definitely think of more of like a spread back,
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: you know, like more of a h a guy that's
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: gonna be able to operate out of the shotgun.
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: Well, but they still have Justice Hill. Yeah, they added
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: rashiin Ali, who's a rookie who I like, they're gonna
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: have opportunities to do those kind of things. I don't
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: think I think Derek Henry's workload is gonna go down,
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: but he's just gonna be some of that like quarterback
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: power stuff. Yeah, you can just run with Derek Henry. Also,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: don't think they're not itching to get the Derrick Henry
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: wildcat package, going.
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: Oh god, this is okay my MVP of the league.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I go ahead before the guy that lost all
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: the best players around him on offense. That's why he's
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: gonna win MVP because he's on a worst team, you know,
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: yeah exactly, and he lost his Binkie exactly.
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: Josh Allen MVP of the league. The reason why he's
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: gonna be MVP of the league is because the Bills
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: are still gonna be good. He's gonna still be good
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: and everybody's gonna say, oh wow, like he loses to
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: Van Diggs. He's still great. The Bills are still they
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: win the AFC East, they are still eleven wins, and
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: Josh Allen's the MVP of the league. He almost won
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: MVP last year. He almost won last year, he was
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: like third in the voting. He's gonna win MVP this year.
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: He's gonna the league in turnovers.
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: I understand that. You know, he doesn't win big games,
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: and YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: We're talking about a regular season award.
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: Yea.
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: He's gonna have a great regular season this year without Digs,
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: and to me, that is going to earn him MVP votes.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: He's gonna lead the league in turnovers, which is and
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: should be disqualifying maybe for that award. Maybe. And I
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: don't think he's going to be better without Digs. I
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: think he's gonna miss Digs tremendously. If you look at
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: what he's been in his career, without digs and without
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: digs a dab he was.
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: He was without digs when he was like a rookie
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: in his second year. And I just I don't he's
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: developed by I also picked this just to piss you off.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: I know you did.
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't believe in Keon Coleman. I'm with you there,
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: But I think Dalton kid is gonna be good.
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: I I I don't know that he he can win
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: the m v P. Just thrown a Dalton Kinkaid.
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: Well, he's not just gonna throw a Dalton k He's
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: kind of just.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: Throwing a Dalton Kinkaid. All Right, big match a guy.
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: No.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: I just if there's a time for Josh Allen to
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: win the m v P, it's this year. But this
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: is the put up her, shut up here for Josh Allen.
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: I'll say that because dig you're acting like he's not done,
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: Like he's freaking Jones, like, put up her, shut up?
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: Like well, quarterback in the league for three years.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: But but why why what makes him a top five quarters?
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: He can't beat the other top quarterbacks in the playoffs.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: He can't beat Joe Burrow, he can't beat Patrick Mahomes
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: like that that's what I he doesn't have digs and
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: it's the last year he's not.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: Gonna have a table literally rooted that you just don't
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: like Buffalo.
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: This is this is a no Evan. What do you
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: he's he? What is he won?
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: There's nothing to do with what he's won. Yes, he
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: needs to win the top Jackson.
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: Look over here, over there, you know when he's top
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: five in turnovers turnovers Evans, get him fired up. This
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: is his year. If if he is a big year
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: this year. I put more weight in this year because
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: he doesn't have digs. Who's Binkie, and he doesn't have
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: day Ball. Who's the only coach who's figuring him out there?
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: He's gonna get day Ball back next year. I really
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: believe that this is the year.
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: Take your your your passion durant out of it. Objectively speaking,
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: if you have watched football for the last two to
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: three years, you cannot tell me that Josh Allen hasn't
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: been one of the league quarterbacks.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: In the league he's led, he's one of the better quarterbacks.
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: He's led league and turners.
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: I don't also through a lot of he's signed the nineties.
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: In the nineties, I don't put him in the same
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: tier as Mahomes, no one. I don't put him in
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: the same tier as Jackson. I don't put the same
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: tier as Burrow.
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: I wouldn't say that him Burrow Jackson, like those guys
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: to me are in that next tier, like Patrick Mahomes.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: Those guys beat him, Patrick mahomes s tier. He's by
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: himselfmes by himself, and.
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: Then the next tier of quarterbacks would probably be Burrow,
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: Allen Lamar Jackson.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: I put him separately because he hasn't won the turnovers thing,
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: which I know the whole New Nerd thing is, turnovers
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: don't matter.
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: It's turnovers don't matter. Quarterbacks. Turnover they don't matter. It
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: just doesn't outweigh the fact that he also threw for
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: like forty touchdowns like you.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: Just fantasy football.
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: I think that's the only thing that he does.
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: He's a great fantasy football quarterback. I just I those
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: other guys do more in big games than he does.
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: I don't deny that. But this is a regular season award,
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: That's what I'm telling you. Regular I'm not saying he's
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: winning the He's.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: Not gonna win the MVA, but he's not gonna win
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: the MVP if he lose. I don't know what their
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: schedule is this year. I assume they play all these teams.
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: He's not gonna win the MVP this year if he
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: loses to Mahomes, Burrow and Jackson.
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: Okay, we'll see, all right, we'll see, all right. Rookie
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: of the Year for the Patriots. Rookie of the Year
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: for the Patriots.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna go Jalen Polk just because I mean, like
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: it is Drake May obviously, but like pound for pound,
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: Jalen Polk's gonna play seventeen games. He's gonna be dead,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: He's gonna be heavily involved for seventeen games, assuming he
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: stays healthy. He projects me a focal point of the offense.
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: Like I know, Drake May is the easy answer, because realistically,
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: if Drake May does anything short of go out there
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: and puke all over himself. Yeah, they have a quarterback
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: and that's exciting, But do you get what I'm saying
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: by that, Like, I don't mean this to knock Drake
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: May or say Drake May is gonna be bad, but
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: Jalen Polk's gonna have more opportunities to produce as a rookie,
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: I think he's gonna do it.
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I picked Jim polkan okay, I just feel all
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: the same reasons, Like in terms of volume of games,
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: he's gonna play, an opportunity he's gonna get. It's just
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: gonna be more than any of the other rookies like
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: Canon Wallace and Javon Baker. I'm not sure going to
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: play much at all to start the year, especially but
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: maybe even not even late in the year either, Like
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: once Drake May gets in there. If you told if
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: you told me that Drake May was gonna play twelve games,
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: and I would pick Drake May exactly. But if he's
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: not going to play twelve games, he's only gonna play eight,
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: then it's just hard to envision that he would have
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: a bigger impact on the season than Jalen Polk. So
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: I picked Jalen Polk as well. For you made the
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: case perfectly. That's with Polk Rookie of the Year for
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: I know this is lazy. I think he's the favorite
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: in most, if not all books. Yeah, Caleb Williams, Yeah,
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: I just I don't remember the last time a rookie
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: quarterback went into his situation that good. The only one
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: I can think of, honestly would have been J. J. McCarthy,
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: but he's hurt, so uh. He's got three great receivers,
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: solid offensive line. It's not great, but a solid offensive line.
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: They've built that thing up over the last few years.
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: They're gonna win some games. The defense is competitive. Caleb Williams.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: I guess if I had to go, like I don't
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: want to give the obvious one, yeah I would, I
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: would think Caleb Williams. My sleeper for this is Xavier Worthy.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: Xavior Worthy could be like a twelve hundred yard receiver
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: of everything that's right, stay as healthy. Yeah.
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: I picked Caleb as well for basically all the same
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: reasons too. I I just he's already at a baseline now.
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: I feel like that's good enough to be an NFL quarterback,
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: and he's got so many weapons to work with in Chicago.
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: It would have to he would have to get hurt
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: at this point.
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: I really can I add this, though, Yes, Caleb Williams
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: will win Rookie of the Year. Caleb Williams will not
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: be the best rookie on his team. Real madoons it'd
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: be better. Tory Taylor.
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: Tory Taylor.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: Tory Taylor is so freaking good.
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: What do you pull that out of you?
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: Where do you think we're not gonna bring up Tory Taylor.
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: We're doing a segment about Bears rookies and I'm not
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: gonna bring up Tory Taylor.
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: Corey Taylor is going to be better than Caleb Williams
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: and Romadoe.
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: We've been through this seven. I do this with the draft, ever,
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: your best player available? What is best player available? Really mean?
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: Is Caleb Williams gonna be top five at his position
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: in the NFL this year? Probably not? You're really good? No,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: hang on, is Kayler Wings gonna be a top five
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: quarterback in the NFL this year? Probably not. He's good player,
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: but probably not this year because Roma dune' is ain't
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: gonna be a top five NFL wide receiver this year.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: Probably actually think he has a better chance being top
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: five than Williams does. But is Tory Taylor going to
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: be a top five punter in the NFL this year?
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: He very well could be. Pound for pound, Tory Taylor
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: will be the best. You know exactly what I'm talking about.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: What if Tory Taylor was the best player available in
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: the draft, like six picks in this year.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: Well, what happens if he doesn't punt it all? Because
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: the offense is just awesome, that is actually very good. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: So, Well, if we're going off like percentages, Bryce Behinger,
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: I mean, remember Jake Bailey twenty he was really freaking good. Okay,
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: so can we all kind of came away from that
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: agreeing pretty much universally that he was the MVP of
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: that team.
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: So I'll give you one sleeper candidate for Rookie of
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: the Year. You're not gonna like it, but I do
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: think there's a chance that bo Nicks has like a
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: Mac Jones rookie season. I don't know if he'll get
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: the wins right, Like that's gonna be the biggest problem,
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: and he's not gonna be the best rookie, Like he
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: shouldn't win the award. But I do think there's a
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: chance that he has like a very good cause that
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: he to me is he's a little bit more athletic
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: than Mac, but he's the pro ready quarterback.
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: Yeah. I guess I just not that Mac had it. Well,
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: Mack didn't win it.
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: He came in second right. That's kind of how I
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: see this happening for Bonnicks.
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: I just don't trust anything around Nick.
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: To elevator, Yeah, that's like Compaion's a good coach, but.
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: Champagne's a good coach. But the line has a ton
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: of questions their best receiver is at this point. I mean,
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: I guess they've Courtland Sutton, but after Courtland Suttland, yeah,
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: it falls off big time. They don't big name tight end.
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: Like I'm not buying any bo Nicks stock. But if
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: he was like a fine rookie quarterback like Mac was,
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: then I would.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: There are gonna be people. No, I think they're gonna
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: people whill come away from this year, saying one in
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: the Patriots draft, bon Nicks look at it not realizing
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: like there's no upward trajectory. But I don't know that
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: he has the pieces around him to win Rookie of
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: the Year. Okay, breakout player, breakout player for the Patriots. Yes,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: I am going you go first.
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: So I don't know if this counts, And I'm gonna
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: ask you to be my my dutch yar. Does Pop
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: Douglas count? Because if Pop Douglas stays healthy, I truly
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: feel like he could be a thousand yards.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd call it more surprise than breakout because I
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: think we'd all be surprised if he stays healthy. But
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: he broke out like break out to me implies talent,
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: like who takes the biggest leap in talent from the
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: year before. And I mean, if Pop Douglas breaks out
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: like as what I would consider a breakout year, you're
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: talking about top ten receiver. Yeah, so ke On White.
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: But I really do consider popping this conversation because what
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: he had five fifty, like fifty catches for five hundred
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: yards something around that, it didn't score.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: A touchdown the biggest surprise player. But I don't think
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: there's any doubts when it comes to his ability. It's
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: just the yeah, yeah, fair so so breakout to me's ability,
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: I thought you were gonna go Taekwon. No, I'm gonna
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: quant to me, is the exact kind of player that
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: will qualify for like a breakout year. Nope, I'm gonna
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: go ke On White.
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: I I really just feel like there's a lot riding
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: on Keon White being a good player for them, just
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: in terms of they need somebody in the front seven
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: that can beat a block and get into the backfield.
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: So not only do I feel like they're gonna be
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: focused on trying to scheme him in different ways to
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: get free in the past rush I just last year
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: definitely felt like for him was like I'm gonna get
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: my feet wet, I'm gonna I belong in this league
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: now and now in New York two, I'm gonna dominate
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: it like now that. Yeah, I think he said that
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: in the spring that like last year, he was more
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: worried about not screwing up, and now he's more focused
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: on beating the person across from him.
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with I can't believe I'm gonna buy in.
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: We bought in and then we didn't buy in and
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: buying it again not doing taekwon. Alex Austinka, I really
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: really liked what I saw from him last year down
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: the stretch, Like he was really good and he had
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: a really good spring. He didn't have a great summer,
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: and I know that kind of cool things off. But
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: we talked about Christian Zalez faltering and maybe that being
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: like kind of a gamer thing. Yeah, I know what
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: I saw from Alex austin year in December January, and
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: I'm not gonna let I'm not gonna let you know what.
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: What wasn't a bad camp. It just what we set
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: the expectations too high is basically where I'm out. He
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: set the expectations too high. I'm gonna buy stock in
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: what I saw last December January from Alex Austin. I
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: think he emerges as like we come out of this year.
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: I think there's a chance we come out of this year.
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: And I know we've talked about Travis Hunter and Will
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: Johnson in the draft and like could they sneaky go corner,
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: Christian Zal Alex Austin, those are your two boundary corners
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: you feel good walk it in moving forward. I think
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: there's a chance we come out of this year in
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: Alex Austin looks like that guy.
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: I definitely agree that the bar is set too high
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: for him. Yeah, he is a solid rotational boundary corner.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: I think he can be a little more than that. Okay,
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: I think he'd be a little Now we were talking
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: about him being like him and Gonzalez turning into like
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: the best quarterback TANGI yeah, I don't think he's about
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: to go get the Pats or Tan Contract. You know,
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: we talked about him being the Jason mccordy being that
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: third guy. Can he be Malcolm Butler? Can he be
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: jac Jackson Logan Ryan, right, or maybe even a little
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: better than that?
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: I know I always think of Logan Ryan for some
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: reason than that.
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: I also just was never a big Logan Ryan guy.
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: He was always just serviceable, never flashy. But I think
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: what's the step above serviceable? Probably Jason mccordy, like good, yeah, okay,
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: but Jason mccordy was I guess well, Jason McCarty was
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: a third corner on.
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: A team that was very, very noo towards the end
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: of the line.
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: So all right, Alex Austin, who's your breakout for the league?
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: My breakout for you? Go first? On this hand, I
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: forgot we were doing this one.
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: Come on, like here, I told him last night we
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: were doing this. Well, because I picked Josh Allen to
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: win MVP, I have to assume that somebody on the
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: Bills offense is going to break out to replace the
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: void left by Diggs. So I went with Dalton Kincaid,
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: who I don't really love, to be honest with you,
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: So I don't feel great about it, but I just
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: feel like the ball has to He's just blind love
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: of Josh Allen. That's all that.
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: Everybody's getting mad at me for blindly hating Josh Allen.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: You're doing the same thing but in the other ear. Yeah,
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: I'm just doing it to piss you off.
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: Dalton Kincaid, someone's got to get the ball thrown to
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: him in Buffalo. I was impressed with him against the
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: Patriots last year. I mean, he smoked Kyle Duggar on
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: that one play. I wasn't expecting that based off of
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: what I saw in college. Maybe I understold him a
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: little bit.
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: In the draft.
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: I just again, it's just more like an opportunity thing.
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: Someone's got to catch the ball from Josh Allen. They're
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: gonna throw it a ton. So I got Dalton dk.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: All right, how about this one, Anthony Richardson, I'm so
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: with you on this, I think, And I don't know.
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: I was kind of fifty to fifty on Anthony Richardson
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: coming out. Yeah. Really, I mean we talked about Drake
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: May as a project, like Anthony richards a real project.
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not like bought in. Sorry to cut you off,
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: But I'm not bought in on the Colts as a whole.
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: But I'm kind of body on Anthony richards.
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: I think on the opposite. I think they put so
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: much talent around Anthony Richardson. Yeah, he's gonna have no
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: choice but to be decent. Yeah, and I think he's
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: gonna have an opportunity to grow in real time. And
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: I think there's a chance with the pieces now it
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: might end up being fools gold long term, he could
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: break out this year and then kind of plateau. But
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: you know, you look at their wide receivers, man, I
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: mean Josh Downs. We're both really high on Michael Pittman,
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: We're both really high on Mitchell. You add a d
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: Mitchell to that. MI pers right, So Alec Pearce is
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: still there. I like their tight ends Moley Coxe although
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: why am and I see is Adie Mitchell opening on?
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: Like?
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: I don't think so. I think he was playing why
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: is he on here? But anyway, yeah, oh, because I'm
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: gonna have to twenty twenty three colds. I'm an idiots.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: I I I want to make sure I didn't forget anything.
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: I got him so frazzled by picking Josh Allen for
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: MVP that he's just all over the place.
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: Yeah eighty, you had Adie Mitchell, Michael Pittman, Yeah, Moley Cox. Like,
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: I think this can be a he's a good offensive line.
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: Yeah so I I really like Shane Steiken too. Like,
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: I think he's one of the better schemers in the
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: NFL on the offense side of the ball. And one
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: of the things he's been able to do with those
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: quarterbacks like Hurts and Anthony Richardson is he builds an
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: offense around mobile quarterbacks, like he will run our po
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: he will run different things that get them into space
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: and get them their athletic ability to shine. So he's
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: a really good schemer. He's one of the best in
- 1:43:06Speaker 2: the league in my mind.
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: And let me be we're not doing like fantasy football breakouts,
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: like take this guy late in the draft. This is
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: actual ex's and o's NFL football. We're talking. I think
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: some people in the chat thought we were talking like fantasy.
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: So, oh no, we don't do fantasy here. This is
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: like who's actually gonna play, well, not who's gonna that.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: One guy got to read us his fantasy lineup last
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: week because he had an awesome team name based on
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: the show that was in.
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: That's absolutely right, all right, biggest disappointment this year, just.
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: Say Josh Allen to keep the conversation going. No, No,
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: I'm not going to I'm gonna say, Jim Harbaugh. I'm
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: with you on I think so I had my real
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: hot take going into the season. I think I started
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: giving this in like June, was that Jim Harbaugh would
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: be one and done with the Chargers. Yeah. Now that
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: was before the pending punishments from the NCAA came out,
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: and that changes the math on it a little bit.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: But I just don't see how that works. I don't
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: see how that works. I already hate most of the
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: big movies.
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: Just think their roster kind of stinks and no one
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: wants to talk about them.
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: Not only does their roster stink, but the things they
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: are good at, and I think the roster took them.
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: You know, I was high on the Charge in the past.
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: I think the roster took a massive blow the things
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: they are good at. He's kind of fighting. He doesn't
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: want he put Joe Walt it right to backle I
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: know what are we doing?
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: And he doesn't want justin Herbert to throw the ball.
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: Right, He's not and it's not he doesn't want him to.
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: He's not going to throw the ball. Like, Herbert's not
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: going to throw the ball, not that he's receivers to
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: throw it too, because Harbau doesn't care about receivers. Yeah,
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: so you want to call Jim Harbaugh, you want to
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: call it the Chargers, You want to call Justin Herbert, whatever,
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: biggest disappointment, whatever the hell's going on out there in LA.
- 1:44:36Speaker 2: I could not agree with you more the people that
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: I pick. No, but I disagree with it, Okay, I
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: I could not. I cannot understand the the whole. Jim
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: Harbaugh is just going to turn the Chargers around. Take Yeah,
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: is something that happened a decade ago in San Francisco.
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: Like that's what we're going by, right, Like he hasn't
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: been in the NFL in a decade and that and
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: that's what we're the team is.
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: That was like I don't want to say fluky, but
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: like they kind of had lightning in a bottle with Kaepernick.
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: With Kaepernick, yeah, like I don't know how that Colin
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: Kepernick had a very unique skill set that was not
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: something you can do with Justin Herbert.
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: At Michigan, he was able to be an old school
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: football team still because they would recruit offensive linemen and
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: stuff like that, and they were just bigger, batter, and
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: tougher than every team. They played top three.
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: Offensive line pretty much every year he was there, also
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: Connor Stallions.
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: But that doesn't work in the NFL, like you can't
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: it does. They're the playing field is too even, is
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: my point right, Like you're not gonna be Michigan going
- 1:45:33Speaker 2: up against freaking Purdue and just like running them over, right,
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: Like that's not gonna happen at this level. So I'm
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: totally not sold on Harbad turning the Chargers around, especially
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: this year. Like maybe he does it over the course
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: of three years, but I'm so shocked by how much
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: Chargers buzz there is, Like just because Jim Harbaugh is
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: back in the NFL, I don't think.
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: I don't think he gets three years. I don't and
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: I know those college punishments are pending, but he'll go
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: do media or something like. I'm not totally backing off
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: my one and done take, but my take was he's
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: gonna do one year with the Charters, can go back
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: to college football essentially, you know, kind of pull an
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: urban urban myred and go back to college foot. Okay,
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: so I guess something. He's gonna pull an urban Meyer. Yeah,
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: one year and then back to I don't think it'll
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: be that bad, but one year and then back to media. Okay.
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: Biggest Patriots disappointment?
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: Do you have one biggest Patriots disappointment? Am I am?
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: I beating a dead horse? If I say the offensive.
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: Line, like so I wrote down the offensive line, I mean, yeah,
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: the entire offensive line.
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: I feel like disappointment implies some elements of surprise or unexpectedness,
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: and that's not there. The other one I wrote down
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: is Taekwon. I know I'm gonna be disappointed. I know
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: he's gonna let me down.
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: I know that I just hyped him up all summer long,
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: and I know he's gonna I'm gonna have pie thrown
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: in my face. Like you you know that Taekwan is
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: not actually breaking out like you just you know that,
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: like we all know.
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: I know I need to know that. You know.
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: I know it's gonna be disappointing. I'm gonna be sad.
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: So I put Tae Kwon my NFL disappointment. Yeah, the
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: New York flipping Jets. I think the New York Jets
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: are gonna jets so hard. I'm not saying that they're
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: gonna necessarily be awful, Like it's not gonna be the situation.
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: They won seven games last year without Rogers.
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'm not saying they're gonna be awful. Yeah,
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: but they're not winning the super Bowl. They're not No, Okay,
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: I'm with you on that. Like they're not winning the
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: super Bowl. They're not gonna be the number one seed
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: in the AFC. They're not winning the AFC.
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: Eas that's right a screen.
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: They are going to be a wild card team. They're
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: gonna be disappointing. I just I don't I'm not wishing
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: injury on anybody with Rogers or anything like that, but
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: we're talking about like a forty forty one year old
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: man coming off of torn achilles. Like, I just they
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: have a ton of roster talent, there's no doubt about it.
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: But I just am not sold on that team or
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: that coach.
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: I think the Jets are gonna look like a wagon
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: in the regular season. I don't know if they're gonna
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: have the top overall seed, but they're gonna win I
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: think at least twelve games, thirteen games. Everybody's gonna buy
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: in Rogers redemption story. It's gonna look great. And then
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: they're gonna play like the third placed AFC North team
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: in the first round of playoffs. Yeah and loose. That's
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: my prediction for the Jets. They will be a wagon
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: in the regular season and then one and done.
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: The Jets our entire lifetime have found a way to
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: jet at some point. I am not going to believe
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: that the Jets are not going to jet.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: They don't, but being jet isn't necessarily like just sucking.
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: That to me is more correct like the Bills or
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: the Browns or the Lions. The Jets is they got
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: to get their fans hopes up before they crush them.
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: And this Jets team can't just get their fans hopes
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: up by winning four or five games they got. The
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: thing with the Jets is the fans hopes will always
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: be up before they come down. And the only way
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: they're getting that high up is if they win the division,
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: so they will go up. And then the who am
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: I looking at here? And that maybe you're to your
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: bonicks point rookie Bonnicks in an eight to nine Broncos
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: team sneaks in as the seventh wild card or the
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: sixth wild card and goes to New York. It just
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: lays a beat down on them.
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: That's Jets jetting. All right, we gotta wrap, but really quickly?
- 1:48:56Speaker 2: Do you want to just do our division winners like
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: kind of rapid fire here? I know we aren't usually
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: good at that, but yeah, let's try it.
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: Well, we got in here ten minutes late, so that's true.
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: That's true, you know, don't I don't want to keep
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: that too late. Yeah, but okay, let's do it good. Well,
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: all right, I guess you want to start AFC. So
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: I just said I think the Jets, I think it's close.
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: I do think the Bills can be there, and maybe
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: it comes down to a tiebreaker. I'm not as high
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: on Miami. Do you know Miami's record with Mike McDaniel
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: against teams that are five hundred finish the year five
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: hundred or better?
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: Wait say that again.
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: Under Mike McDaniel last two years, what is the Dolphins
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: record against teams that finished the year five hundred? Oh,
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: it's terrible. It's five and ten yeah, So I'm not
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: counting on the Dolphins because they're gonna have a harder schedule
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: this year. I think it's Jets and Bills neck and neck.
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: The Jets have kind of had Josh Allen's numbers, so
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: maybe that head to head tiebreaker that is true, I'll
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: give you that. So I think, you know, do they
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: both do they both win twelve games? Maybe? But I
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: think the Jets win the division close.
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: So I know that you are supposed to pick teams
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: that didn't win the division last year because that's like
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: it never happens two years in a row. But I
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: just feel as though the AFC. I just have a
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: tough time picking I mean, going against the division winners
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: from twenty three.
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: You drooled all over the Bills, like nobody can expected
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: to come out and not pick them to win.
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: No, I just mean the whole conference, Okay, Like I
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: have a tough time seeing it going a different direction
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: in every division.
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: I think there's only oh no, I think I picked
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: all the Yeah. No, I think I did the same
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: thing Ravens.
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: I got the Bills in the AFC East, Yeah, for
- 1:50:24Speaker 2: obvious reasons. In the North, I like the Bengals. Yeah,
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: but I do feel as though the vibes are a
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: little off in Cincinnati right now with the contracts and
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: all the like. Everybody wants their money now. And Jamar
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: Chase is he playing? Is he not playing? Is he extended?
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: Is he not extended? T Higgins is unhappy he doesn't
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: have a deal. I just don't there's too much uncertain
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: I will say that I think the Ravens win that division.
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: I think that division has three playoff teams, Cleveland being
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: the third, Cleveland being the no U oh no, sorry,
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: I don't I have two the pit Yeah no.
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: Just do that just too Yeah, yeah, I have I
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: have Baltimore winning that divis and I just think that
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: they're the class of the division right now.
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: All right, So let me ask you this. We just
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: kind of gave it away. We both picked the Texans,
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: we both picked the Chiefs. Which team has the narrowest
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: grasp on repeating which team is in the most trouble
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: in terms of repeating.
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: I would probably say Buffalo, okay, just because I do
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: think the Dolphins and the Jets are also to really
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: playoff caliber teams. So if they are, if you're right,
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: and it goes that direction, But I also feel as
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: though the Texans the Texans. Yeah, I think a team
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: like the Jaguars could bounce back. So I could see
- 1:51:35Speaker 2: the coltsline.
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: Like if Richardson's a guy, If Richardson justifies that pick,
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: they got a really good roster there. I think the
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: Texans are in the most trouble. But I also picked
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: the Jets.
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: To win, so we had the the AFC repeating, I, oh,
- 1:51:51Speaker 2: you had the Jets instead of Buffalo outside of the Chiefs.
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know that the AFC West has a
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: team that wins more than five games.
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: Right, I mean that's why I said off the top
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: that when I picked these for the AFC, I was like,
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: I mean, I guess you know in this South that
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: maybe somebody could push the Texans, But like, in reality,
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: the Texans have the best team. Like it's hard to
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: im I think the Colts.
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: Are kind of right there with them. If but richard
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: justifies the pack, right, but Stroud is like already justifiable
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: stamp No, So like, if if Richardson looks like a
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: quarterback worthy of the top five pick, you get what
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: I'm saying, I hear you. Then in my mind, the
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: Colts and Texans are kind of equal, okay, if if
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: Richardson plays that level, which is no guarantee. I want
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: to like the Raiders. I do, and I think Pierce
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: was the right higher. That quarterback situation just a disaster.
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: And I also think Devonte Adams is totally checked out
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: all right. NFC I did have some different teams in
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: the NFC. I did too NFC East. I went with
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: the Eagles.
- 1:52:43Speaker 2: I I don't know what's going on in Dallas, and
- 1:52:47Speaker 2: you know, I'm a DAK guy. You know, I don't
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: know what's going on in Dallas. I don't know what
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: the heck Jerry Jones is doing down there. It seems
- 1:52:54Speaker 2: to me like keeping guys like Dak and Ceedee Lamb
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: and Micaeh Parsons should be an absolute no brainer for
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: a team worth as much as the Dallas Cowboys, and
- 1:53:01Speaker 2: yet they're making it ten times more difficult than they
- 1:53:04Speaker 2: need to. Mike McCarthy is still a giant question mark
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: there at head coach. I just like the Eagles a
- 1:53:10Speaker 2: little bit better right now.
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: I don't like the vibes in Philly either, though there
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: was that whole thing about Sirianni and Birts didn't get along.
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: I know I picked the Cowboys. This is I kind
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: of feel the same way about the NFC East they
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: do about the AFC East. Yeah, Bill's Jets, Cowboys, Eagles.
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: It's gonna come down to the wire. I'll take the
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: Cowboys on the fringe. But I'll tell you this, like
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: the Jets Cowboys not winning a playoff.
- 1:53:29Speaker 2: Game NFC North, this is one of my differences. I'm
- 1:53:34Speaker 2: taking the pack.
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: Is this the best division in football?
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: If Minnesota is like decent, decent with their quarterback situation,
- 1:53:43Speaker 2: than than Yeah.
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: Probably. I took the Packers too. I know you want
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: the Lions to implode. I think they take a slight
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: step back, not a massive one.
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: I don't think they implode, but I'm with you.
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: Yeah, they won twelve games last year. I think they're
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: probably more like a ten win team. I think the
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: Packers take a big step. I still think they're one
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: step away from like Super Bowl contender. Yeah, but I
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: think they win that division. But that that division could
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: have should have four teams all over five hundred, assuming
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: Darnold doesn't puke all over himself, and we both think
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: they should have traded for Mac Jones.
- 1:54:11Speaker 2: I I just at some point with the Lions, the
- 1:54:15Speaker 2: book will start to get out on the Lions a
- 1:54:17Speaker 2: little bit, like Jared gov cannot keep doing this, Like
- 1:54:20Speaker 2: all he does is run play action at a high level,
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: and that's that's the only thing that he does well
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: at a high level. I should say it's not the
- 1:54:26Speaker 2: only thing he does well, which is the only thing
- 1:54:27Speaker 2: he does at an elite level. And eventually that that's
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: gonna find It's just like it did with the Rams,
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: right where it's like we only have so much of
- 1:54:33Speaker 2: a ceiling with this with the situation. So I took
- 1:54:36Speaker 2: the Packers. I'm a Jordan love guy. I just love
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: what they've built on that roster too. They're just a
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: really good roster building team.
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: This was also the division I was thinking three playoff teams,
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: NFC Central, not AFC Central North. You mean North, Yeah,
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: what year is it?
- 1:54:48Speaker 2: Yeah, right, NFC South. I got the Dirty Birds Atlanta Falcons.
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't think Baker can match what he did
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: Lastually it will be fine. Yeah, but the Falcons have
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: a really good football team, even if Kirk Cousins is
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: kind of struggling coming off that Achilles. You mentioned Aaron Rodgers.
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: You don't know what that looks like. Your boys wait
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: in the wings. Michael Pennix might start games this year, Yeake,
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: And I like that. I feel good about that. They
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: also have a coaching staff that's going to recognize that
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: Kyle Pitts is on the roster. Yeah. As much as
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: I make fun of you for for the whole oh
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: you're doing Tayekwon again thing, Yeah, I'm the worst with that.
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: We don't talk about it because we're a Patriot show.
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: I still believe in Kyle Pitts. I hand up. I
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: still believe it is September fifth, twenty twenty four. I
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: still believe Kyle Pitts can be an elite tight end
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: in the NFL. I don't think Arthur Smith knew how
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: to use him. Hopefully RhI Morris this new offensive coaching
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: staff does. I have the Falcons, then the Bucks. The
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: Saints are a sneaky first overall pick team for.
- 1:55:45Speaker 2: Me, Yeah, I agree with that. I really feel like
- 1:55:48Speaker 2: the Saints are in the at least top five, at
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: bottom five or whatever you want to like.
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: They've been somehow able to hover around five hundred for years,
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: the final few years of Breeze. Post Breeze, you know,
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: they've kind of really done a number on the salary
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: cap things like that. That whole bill has to come
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: due eventually.
- 1:56:06Speaker 2: So the Falcons. Just to wrap this up, I am
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: really bullish on the Falcons, Like everybody else's Drake London,
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: Darnell Mooney, Kyle Pitts, Bijon Robinson, Kirk Cousins at quarterback
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: or maybe Michael Pennis at quarterback. That is an offense
- 1:56:23Speaker 2: then line, it's a good offense and.
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: Their defense pretty good. Juna is a great addition for them.
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: I still like aj Turrell to find a skill position
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: group better than the Falcons right now, Like they have
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: dogs all over that's gonna be everybody's like, oh my
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: sneaky super Bowl pitch, Yeah, it's gonna be all right.
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: NFC West forty nine ers, Yeah, this this division could
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: be sneaky bad. The Rams are one Matthew Stafford injury
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: away from Jimmy Garoppolo playing quarterback, and that means they're
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: two weeks away from Stetson Bennett playing quarterback. I think
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: the Seahawks are headed towards the rebuild, and I just
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: still don't believe in the Cardinals. I still don't Harrison
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: doesn't change anything.
- 1:56:59Speaker 2: I dude, think the Cardinals could be like sneaky competitive,
- 1:57:03Speaker 2: but like it's like an eight to nine sneaky competitive.
- 1:57:05Speaker 2: We're not talking about them.
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: Actually, the Niners will dominate the regular season as they do,
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: and then Kyle Shanahan will have to prove me wrong.
- 1:57:11Speaker 2: All right, well it's your super Bowl pick, then.
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: It's gonna be the Chiefs, because I just don't see
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: how anybody got better enough to beat the Chiefs. But
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: my super Bowl pick is Ravens over Niners. So this
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: goes back to my Lamar Jackson take. Yes, I don't
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: know that Derek Henry has to be great in Baltimore.
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: He just has to absorb hits. Because I think this
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: is the first year we're actually gonna see a relatively
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: healthy Lamar Jackson in the playoffs, and I think they're
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: gonna take advantage of that. I think the Chiefs the
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: Bill's gonna come due for two deep runs. Physically, there's
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: a lot to ask there at Their wide receiver room
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: is as much of a question as it's been in
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: a few years. As much as I like Worthy, I
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: think a fully healthy Lamar Jackson plus home field advantage
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: puts the Ravens over the top. Kyle Shanahan's gonna beat up.
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: I don't think the Packers are ready. There really isn't
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: another team in the NFC that stands out to me.
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan's gonna beat up on the Tomato Cans. Get
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: to the Super Bowl, be up fourteen points at halftime,
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: puke all over himself. Lamar Jackson gets his ring.
- 1:58:08Speaker 2: Okay, so I had the same matchup in the Super Bowl. Yeah,
- 1:58:11Speaker 2: but Kyle Shanahan finally.
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: Seven times the charming, finally charm to that podium nine times.
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: The unter Goodell says, here's the Lombardi Trophy.
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: Kyle, you finally did It're gonna need it. What's it
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: feel like? They're gonna need to take him out of
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: the straight jacket in order to give that trophy, because
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: they're gonna have to tie him up and put him
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: at the back of the bench to make sure he
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: can't botch the clock in the second.
- 1:58:32Speaker 2: This is the year. This is the year that Kyle
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: Shanahan wins the Super Bowl.
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: I thought last year was this.
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: This is the year. I thought last year was the
- 1:58:39Speaker 2: year he was an over half against the second best
- 1:58:41Speaker 2: quarterback of all time.
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: Okay, it happened. I thought twenty twenty one was the year.
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: This is his year. Twenty nineteen was the year he
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: I thought twenty sixteen was here. This year Kyle Shanahan
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: in the San Francisco forty nine ers over the Baltimore Ravens.
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: I agree with you there, I it's really I don't
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: think it's ever happened to three pet right, No, it's
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: never happened. I'm not gonna not wins. It's having appearance.
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: It's not wins.
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: I'm not gonna pick that it's gonna happen until it happens.
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: I mean, look like it's gonna be the Chiefs. Nope,
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: nobody got forty nine. Nobody improved enough in the off.
- 1:59:14Speaker 2: World champions and my guy, Kyle Shanahan rides off into
- 1:59:17Speaker 2: the sunset and you have to eat crow.
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: And a year from today we will be sitting here
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: after the forty nine ers embarrass themselves again, and Evan
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: will be pounding the desk. This is the year for
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: Kyle Shanaham. He'll have paid Rock Party, He'll pay Trean Williams.
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: This is the year for Kyle Shit, and it is
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: gonna be twenty thirty, and we're still gonna be doing
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: the show. This is year. He's only got three years left, Evan.
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: Marvin Lewis is right there in his rearview mirror, He's
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: only got three years left.
- 1:59:42Speaker 2: This is the year I'm taking the Niners.
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: Sounds familiar.
- 1:59:45Speaker 2: Super Bowl nine or Super Bowl Champs. All right, that
- 1:59:48Speaker 2: does it for today? We do?
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: Do you want to take this last call? He called, Yeah,
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: we will.
- 1:59:53Speaker 2: And then well and it's Sean. What's going on?
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: Oh?
- 1:59:57Speaker 2: He's calling back in. I think right, we'll get on
- 2:00:00Speaker 2: really quickly though this email. We wait for Sean to
- 2:00:03Speaker 2: get on the line. Uh, Greg is asking the pictures
- 2:00:06Speaker 2: behind me. I looked behind me and you're probably wondering
- 2:00:08Speaker 2: what the hell I was doing. The pictures behind me?
- 2:00:11Speaker 2: Rob Gronkowski not pictured behind me on this wall. And
- 2:00:15Speaker 2: this is something that I brought up with with the Boss,
- 2:00:18Speaker 2: and I was like, we have Hannah, we have ty Law,
- 2:00:21Speaker 2: we have Drew Brees, Drew Brees, tru Bloodsoee, Drew Bloodsoe,
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: Richard Seymour, the Goat, Andre Tippett, and Stanley Morgan. And
- 2:00:31Speaker 2: I said, we've got to get Gronk on these photos.
- 2:00:35Speaker 2: And I did call Drew bloodsoe, Yeah, but where are
- 2:00:38Speaker 2: you taking off? That was the boss's response, Fred, That
- 2:00:42Speaker 2: was his response. All these are all all time great
- 2:00:45Speaker 2: Patriots Hall of famers, you know, John Hannah maybe the
- 2:00:48Speaker 2: best offensive lineman of all time. It's tough, and maybe
- 2:00:50Speaker 2: we could rotate or something.
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: Maybe, I mean, maybe you go pass catcher for pass
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: catcher Stanley Morgan.
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: Yeah, no, offense to the steamer, but I think that
- 2:00:58Speaker 2: that's probably the one you got to take up.
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: So you could push. We do have the rescue one
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: back here too.
- 2:01:02Speaker 2: Oh see, yeah, I got teddy.
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: You could Yeah, there's not a ton of defense. Oh yeah,
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: there's three defensive guys. Actually you can kind of like
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: Drew Brees. I'm never gonna forgive you that. You can
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: just squeeze them together a little bit more so.
- 2:01:13Speaker 2: It's been a long day, all right on the edges here,
- 2:01:15Speaker 2: let's take Sean and then we'll wrap it up. What's up, Sean?
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: Sean?
- 2:01:21Speaker 2: Hey, what's up?
- 2:01:24Speaker 3: I think the Patriots should sign Michael Thomas slam boy?
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 2:01:31Speaker 2: Okay, is that is that all you got?
- 2:01:34Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 2:01:34Speaker 2: All right, thanks Sean, Thanks for the call. Uh slam boys?
- 2:01:38Speaker 2: Is he still kicking?
- 2:01:39Speaker 1: Around like it.
- 2:01:40Speaker 2: When the last time that Michael Thomas this is Saints
- 2:01:43Speaker 2: Ohio State. Yeah, Michael Thomas has played in the NFL.
- 2:01:46Speaker 4: Well.
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: He was in the headlines recently because he got suspended.
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: He's gonna miss the first.
- 2:01:50Speaker 2: Week of the season and he's not even on a team.
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: Yeah. I love when freedom's got spended. He apparently played
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: in ten games last year, thirty nine passes for four
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: and forty eight yards of that. Yeah, No, he's he's
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: been so this is one. You know, I love this take, Evan. Yeah,
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: the reason the Patriots were able to trade for Brandon
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: Cooks in twenty seventeen was because Cooks and Thomas basically
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: didn't get along. They both wanted lion's share of the targets,
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: and obviously only one guy can get those. And I
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: said it that and this was after Thomas was coming
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: off of a massive year. They picked the wrong guy.
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: I stand by that take. Everybody called me crazy in
- 2:02:23Speaker 1: the moment. Brandon Cooks is still a perennial thousand yard receiver.
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: He might be a journeyman, but he's a perennial thousand
- 2:02:28Speaker 1: yard receiver. Michael Thomas has become a meme the Saints
- 2:02:31Speaker 1: moved on from the wrong guy. I'm good on Michael Thomas. Yeah,
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: thank yeah, I'm with you on that.
- 2:02:35Speaker 2: Remember when they would go through those like the Marius
- 2:02:37Speaker 2: Thomas at the endrif may you know seriously not joking
- 2:02:40Speaker 2: around Eric Decker, Yeah, like they used to.
- 2:02:42Speaker 1: Bill would do that. Reggie Wayne is kind of the
- 2:02:45Speaker 1: apex of this.
- 2:02:46Speaker 2: Yeah, Chada just to go even was like towards the
- 2:02:49Speaker 2: end there, Joey Galloway I think spent the Patriots. All Right,
- 2:02:54Speaker 2: that does it for us here. We will be back
- 2:02:56Speaker 2: next week. We're gonna talk obviously Bengals recap, will look
- 2:03:00Speaker 2: ahead to next week and now we're in regular season
- 2:03:02Speaker 2: mode bars, so we're going to be rolling here with
- 2:03:04Speaker 2: actual football to talk about. And like I said off
- 2:03:06Speaker 2: the top of the show, I'm relieved. I am very
- 2:03:08Speaker 2: glad that we don't have to be looking through crystal
- 2:03:11Speaker 2: balls anymore and things like that. So we'll be back
- 2:03:14Speaker 2: next week probably I around the same time two two
