- 1:19the torch carriers. Get this and get it straight. Crime is a sucker's
- 1:23road, and those who travel and wind up in the gut of the prison
- 1:26of the grave this time each carried its touch, and each was burned by
- 1:30it. They heal the hero worshiper in the Hot Bitten Blonde at all because
- 1:34of a woman already two days dead from the pen of Raymond Chandler, outstanding
- 1:40author of crime fiction, comes his most famous character in the Adventures of Philip
- 1:46Marlowe. In Just a Moment Tonight's story, But first, a message for
- 2:00the Ford dealers of America. Tonight more than one hundred and ten thousand enthusiastic
- 2:05motorists on new nineteen fifty Fords. Here's what Donald L. Gibson, the
- 2:08pilot from Kansas City, says about his fifty Ford. As a pilot,
- 2:13I'm naturally interested in engines, and that's why I bought a fifty Ford.
- 2:15That V eight really ticks along. And ticks is just the right word,
- 2:19because it's as smooth and quiet as the Swiss movement. A good watch,
- 2:23and it's not just the Ford engine that's fine. The ride is just like
- 2:25flying in smooth air, and the car handles like a dream. Anyone who's
- 2:30thinking of buying a new car should certainly take a check ride in the fifty
- 2:34Ford. We Ford dealers are swamped with comments like that, but don't take
- 2:38anyone's word for this new fifty Ford. Prove it for yourself. Look up
- 2:42your nearest Ford dealer in the classified phone directory, or perhaps you know him
- 2:46personally. He'll arrange a test drive in the fifty Ford test drive it for
- 2:51comfort, for power, for safety, and for the quietness which is its
- 2:54mark up quality. Yes, before you buy any car at any price,
- 3:00test drive the fifty four that your Ford dealers tomorrow Now with Gerald Moore starred
- 3:05as Phila Marlowe. We bring you tonight's exciting story. The Torch Carriers.
- 3:25Eight hours that had just slipped away had been a noisy assortment of big people
- 3:30with little troubles. I hadn't wanted their help, and little people with big
- 3:34troubles I hadn't been able their help. So by the time it was all
- 3:38over and I was heading for home, a cozy, quiet cocktail lounge at
- 3:42the Wilshire Gardens Hotel seemed like a good idea. When I was there,
- 3:46up at the bar, with one down and one to go, the strain
- 3:49that had been with me all day began to ease up. But even as
- 3:53I relaxed, the tension between the couple sitting at my left became more and
- 3:55more aturned. I looked down. The bar girl was young, pretty and
- 4:00obviously afraid of the little man. With her wait only asthma where a voice
- 4:04should have been now if I made myself clear, I don't know what you're
- 4:09talking about. I look, says Sir Larry Sower. Doesn't couple people snooping
- 4:12out from nothing. I need to do why? It gives me work to
- 4:15do that sometimes. Rough enough, Poddy Grave boy, all right, little
- 4:20man, you've had your busy day. Hey, take your hands off as
- 4:24soon as you'll relax. Okay, okay to me, gentlemen, please,
- 4:27no fighting. I can lose my license for it. Now you leave it.
- 4:30Won't fight him? Innute body? You heard him busting? Okay,
- 4:32I said, want to come to say anything? You? All right?
- 4:35Miss? Are you sure? Would you like another drink? No? I
- 4:43go back to my dollar. Oh you're staying here at the washer? GUNA
- 4:47got your little clean? Maybe I better see you as far as the door.
- 4:50Little paleoids might still be around us. Thank you? All right?
- 4:56Come on, this is really very nice of you, mister Marlow. Philip
- 5:03Marlow, what about you? What? Oh Claire usprings? Now, look,
- 5:09Claire, I'm not trying to ply into your business, but in a
- 5:11way, people like Larry's salva on my business. Larry, how did you
- 5:15know about him? The little piel on the bar, wasn't whispering. I'm
- 5:18a private detective, Claire, and I see a lot of people get in
- 5:20over their heads. I hate to see it happen to you. You know,
- 5:25these people play rough, usually for keeps. Maybe you better tell me
- 5:28about it. Huh, this is my title. It's tomorrow. I'll be
- 5:32frank with you. Come. Months ago, I got into a jam.
- 5:35It was an investment. I've made some stock, a sure thing. I
- 5:39was cold, and they usually are anyhow, the certificates weren't quite Joe dead
- 5:43and they took a dive, a deep one. I need to protect myself.
- 5:46I needed more money, so I took a breaklet. I had a
- 5:49diamond run and got a loan on it from Larry so Yes from Chafer,
- 5:54a friend a prison I sat with. A friend recommended him to me,
- 5:58Oh, you cash your break slid, covered your investment, got your money
- 6:00back, and now you want the bracelet again. Correct, Yes, but
- 6:03Salt isn't around. He's high. How do you know? But I went
- 6:06to the club. He runs up on the strip. I overheard it there.
- 6:10The two men spoke of him as being on an extended vacation for his
- 6:14health. Of course I didn't believe that. So I went around the back,
- 6:16found a door open, and got into Saltr's private office. Maybe that
- 6:20in itself is a wonderful way to get into troubles deep. Yes, I
- 6:24know, but I just had to find out where Salt could be located so
- 6:27I could pay him and get my bracelet. Path you're not, It's just
- 6:30papers. He was folded under Shaltas memo pad. On one side it says
- 6:34Madge Glad's down two seven fourth, the last numbers missing turn off and on
- 6:40the back meet at one one. No, it was ten ten? Can
- 6:44this help? Then? The first Claire a couple of questions that might help
- 6:47even more? Who was that Erstart's little Caesar slapped you in there? One
- 6:51of the men I overheard talking at Chaltre's club. He must have seen me
- 6:56and then followed me here that figure? Now, look, honey, yes,
- 6:59scrambling off full hot for a thousand bucks bracelet. What's the rest of
- 7:01it? Right, David? But you're out of your honey, that's funny.
- 7:09I might just as well tell you the bracelet doesn't mind, mister Marlow.
- 7:13It belongs to my aunt. I live with her in San Diego.
- 7:15Oh you borrowed it while she was away. Maybe huh, yes, Oh
- 7:18please, I've learned my lesson. I only want to get that bracelet back
- 7:21now, mister marlow Please, Pa, will you help me? I'll pay
- 7:25you in never mind that now, Oh pleeez. I must know where Larry's
- 7:29soldier is. Okay, Clay, we'll try to find out. But I'm
- 7:31want condition huh which is right? But you go inside, lock all doors
- 7:34and windows, sit next to the phone, and until you hear from me
- 7:38again, do absolutely nothing on your own agree. Oh yes, agreed,
- 7:42mister Marlowe, Thank you very much. Maybe it was because the sweet young
- 7:56kid had the kind of voice she could still hear long after she was gone.
- 8:00You know, one of those lingering sounds like the echo of the train
- 8:05was hanging on chrisp early morning air that when I was at a payphone,
- 8:09I stopped wondering and started dialing numbers prefixed gladstone and followed by two, seven,
- 8:13four, and then in order one, two, three and so on
- 8:16until afternoon. Answer once, wisecrackers twice in the babysitter who thought I was
- 8:20a masher from her high school. I finally scored at number five. The
- 8:26answer took me to a dame named Madge Gilbert, a place called the Beakman
- 8:30Closet. It wasn't the kind of place you'd go for mother, and Madge
- 8:33Gilbert wasn't the kind of girl mother would put up with. However, she
- 8:37must have been nice to look at once, and from the smile pleasant to
- 8:41know. Okay, mister busy guy, now that we're together, what is
- 8:46it? Oh? For one thing, the name's Kirby, and you can
- 8:48drop the fancy handle. And for another thing, Kirby, I want to
- 8:52find Larry Sliver it quick. Got a proposition for him. He won't be
- 8:56interested. How can you tell you don't know what it is? No,
- 9:01but I do know what at the moment Larry is. And in three letters,
- 9:05my friend, the word is sad. He lost his lady love drink.
- 9:13No thanks, What do you mean is lady love? I heard that
- 9:16you went, You heard all that used to be the pre Jana's trial period.
- 9:22I'm the sad comes from Jane's finding a better deal. Maybe huh.
- 9:24No, she was killed allomobile accidents, not before last. No. Again,
- 9:33she was alone and drunk, and that's probably the way Larry is right
- 9:37now, A blind pool. Sure, look baby, believe me, it
- 9:46won't put up a torture. Carry shut up. Sorry, I broke the
- 9:52whole thing up. Now, what was that proposition you mentioned? Larry exclusively
- 9:56worthy the foundry on cushion, faundry and least Los Angeles. Hey, wait
- 10:03a minute, Curvas, you seem kind of lost for a friend of Larry.
- 10:07I'm just fuzzy on locations. So how about numbers you address down there?
- 10:13What is it? Come on that ten ten? Unless it's been changed
- 10:16recently, it hasn't. Okay, busy guy, you're still all right,
- 10:22thanks, And if you play it real close, I think you'll be too.
- 10:26See you imagine Cushing Avenue in East Los Angeles is industry literally wrong side
- 10:39of attraction. About his non Hollywood is an honest day's work. And all
- 10:43the way there, I kept blessing the dumb luck that had made me answer
- 10:46ten cents for the addressed before I'd even had time to think. When I
- 10:50pulled up and parked away from the place, I hoped that luck would continue.
- 10:54Because the head was the foundry, or what remained of it, and
- 10:58in no sense did it looked like friendly territory. I found a metal staircase,
- 11:01climbing from what had once been a loading ramp up to the yard Foeman's
- 11:05office, where a single, staring, unshielded light inside said that somebody was
- 11:09home. And when I quietly gone up those stairs, I saw through a
- 11:13glass door who that somebody was Larry's Sawfi alone next to a telephone and fishing
- 11:20dots at a smiling face on the calendar across the wall that read January nineteen
- 11:24twenty eight. And I knocked with the barrel of my thirty eight on a
- 11:28dirty glass door, told me to come in without looking up. Thank yourself
- 11:33at home, neighbor. I'll be with you in a minute. Ah,
- 11:41I did it. The front toots had been trying for that all night,
- 11:43so glad you made it. Now I won't be on your mind while we
- 11:46talked. What bracelets? Bracelets, neighbor, This is an iron fondly,
- 11:52but you wanted a jewelry shop. Let's save each other a lot of time
- 11:56and a level. Huh. I'm a private detective named Marlow Soldourn at the
- 11:58moment worked for Claire Osborne, who now is the price of a bracelet wants
- 12:03it back in a hurry. Do we do business? No? You don't,
- 12:05And it's not because I don't like your neighbor, but because one I
- 12:09never heard of any clear osburn two bracelets and stuff for second story man,
- 12:16which I am not. Three. You ought to get yourself a pair of
- 12:20sneakers. Stupid Eve been followed all the way through the yard, up the
- 12:26stairs and into this room. An old gag. So no, no gag.
- 12:30So you still can You better put that gun away because my boy Cover
- 12:33takes a strange delight in messing people up real bad. Your bracketed you better
- 12:41drop it fast. Ye yep, that's better him. I'm all over with
- 12:48im. Any double talk about babes and bracelets, let's happen. You don't
- 12:52want to Freeman best boys, aren't you? You think guy had something to
- 12:56do with him getting knocked off in that ditch. You're here to square things
- 13:01away. That's it is. He gets your hands off home. Okay,
- 13:05I won't touch you again. But that's more than I can say for Cob.
- 13:11Yeah, lots more. It was a toss up whether COB's gone on
- 13:24the side of my head, on the side of my head on the floor
- 13:28down the damage. Either way, it didn't seem to matter because I couldn't
- 13:33make it back any further than Larry Sol's voice. It sounded like it was
- 13:39coming from the bottom of the well, even though I could see him talking
- 13:43at the telephone. Mine later It's eighty one North. But then I couldn't
- 13:56even see that anymore. Oh oh yeah, oh good, evenin Wilchair Gardens
- 14:22Hotel twelve. Please one moment, please, oh hello, Hello, Claire,
- 14:35listen, I'm over and East Los Angeles. Come on, Lord,
- 14:37did you find him? Do you know where Larry's galdine? I think so?
- 14:43Eighty one hundred Northfolds sarn it'sp in Hollywood near you. And listen,
- 14:46Claire about the bracelet? What there was no no trouble on stock marketing,
- 14:52no loanmade. Why do you want to know where Solar is? What do
- 14:56you want from him? It's life? Good time. Wait a minute,
- 15:00Claire, listen to me. I oh, I wouldn't try it. Hey,
- 15:11Covi, listener, you don't have to go no place until Larry Slider

- 16:33advantage to test drive the fifty Ford at your Ford dealers tomorrow. Now,
- 16:40with our star Gerald Moore, we return to the second act of Philip Marlowe
- 16:44and Tonight's story The torch Carriers. I turned to the poka face cover in
- 16:56the forty five boats tearing at me from across six us. The feet of
- 17:00concrete floor that may be ancient East La founderies seem colder and even more lonely.
- 17:04You don't stay put? So good do you? Sweet ear? You
- 17:07kind of heavy handed with that gun, don't you covid you want to try
- 17:10again? Sweet eart, I'll pass and he hears telling at each other.
- 17:15You have to get dull. Don't you think that's entirely up to you?
- 17:18Sweet eye? You bleed, I'd like that when you're cure. Look just
- 17:22so I don't get plugged by mistake. But let me sit down before I
- 17:26fall down. Help so over there on that box, so we keep me
- 17:30between you and the door. That's right. You're a good boy. You
- 17:36got no idea? Hey, come on, how long do we play like
- 17:38this? I'll tell you better when Oval the Squeak gets back. What's Oval
- 17:42the Squeak? She runs errands for Larry, like finding out what's phony about
- 17:45a certain young babe and or bracelets that don't exist. So that's where the
- 17:49bird with the whiskey soprano fits. That's the way the punk operates. Huh,
- 17:53well that way covid will both die of old age before Oh well,
- 17:57you hear that somebody moved downstairs. Maybe this is a visitors night and the
- 18:02old Foundry. Don't get your hope some sweet art those live here, they're
- 18:07rat they eat small dogs. One thing more, please shot? What's that
- 18:15for? Punk? Dropping your hands out of your lap where I couldn't see
- 18:18him? Don't try it again. I'll put it on your bill. You
- 18:22know kvit. You're holding me here on Larry's Solda's orders, and yet I'm
- 18:25the only one who knows what schedule I happened to him tonight. Maybe you
- 18:27better tell me. Sure, Only first, I want to know something about
- 18:32the late mister Freeman. Best Freeman was scum, well stinking scum. Nobody
- 18:38misses him, I mean nobody, And Larry didn't kill him match out,
- 18:44but he was connected, wasn't me? And there was a girl named Janie
- 18:45Trial. How does she figure? You better let that one set, sweetheart,
- 18:49for your own sake. Now let's have your running fast. What's supposed
- 18:55to happen? Did you hear it? Yeah? What? Don't tell me?
- 18:59A tough boy like you who gets jumping. All right, give come
- 19:03on, wise boy, jabbing co won't do any good anyway. I'm the
- 19:06only one who got there was something made your right, something enough to wear
- 19:11shoes. Shut up, I said, and sit right there. I'll bully
- 19:15you in two and I mean it. Ov ovo, Hey, squeat?
- 19:26Is that Joe who's out there? Ask me? Its cover? Dged out
- 19:33of the room. I he was along the side of the box I've been
- 19:37sitting on for a jacket chunk of metal slag I spotted earlier. It was
- 19:40about the size of a baseball and heavy. I picked it up and moved
- 19:42across to the opposite wall near the door. Yo, got a hair the
- 19:48bosses throw at it. I fit. I stepped out and saw Covid standing
- 19:53at the head of the stairs, his back to me. I threw the
- 19:56lump of iron slag with everything I had caught him come up between the shoulder
- 20:02laces had flew back. A singer's clawed at the air, and he pitched
- 20:03taste first down the stairs. I caught a glimpse of a woman ducking out
- 20:08of sight behind the foundering furnace. It was Mad's Guilbert, You're killed him,
- 20:18Cobra dead. I don't know, and I don't care. What are
- 20:19you doing? This's brought it up right trap. There's nobody else here,
- 20:23just does cover creepy number they called Oval the Squeakers do any minute, nasty
- 20:29little loss gives me the willie. You made your bed, baby, But
- 20:32let's not get lost. What are you after in here? I've been thinking
- 20:36plenty about that torch you're talking about. I decided if you carry the same
- 20:40old one long enough, you're bound to get burned. Finally felt the heat.
- 20:44Huh, yeah, plenty. So I came here looking for you or
- 20:48Larry. Couldn't make up your mind, certainly. I wanted to tell Larry
- 20:52I was throwing it a beat you to it, but you found me.
- 20:55So okay, what if Larry of the Squeak come back after what I'm gonna
- 21:00tell you. You gotta help me get out of here. Larry'd kill me.
- 21:04You wanted to know about Janie Trout, Okay, I'll tell you she
- 21:10was beautiful. I'd be the first to admit a brunettelike every woman wishes she
- 21:15was. And Larry fell for she took him away from me just like I've
- 21:19been dead ten years. Only she was rotten number once they're clean the vault
- 21:25in her twisted, dry old brain, jealous, lover jealous. Sure,
- 21:30I was jealous at first, and just hurt and disgusted. She was double
- 21:34crossing Larry every time he turned around, but there was nothing I could do.
- 21:38I try to tell him, yeah, oh, but this one time
- 21:45I made it stick. She borrowed Larry's car to take that slimy Freeman Best
- 21:49out for a ride in it with extra laughs because there was Larry's car,
- 21:53mind you and Freeman Best. In case you haven't heard, I heard,
- 21:57Well, I gotta leave that they were gonna wind up at the bridge cafe.
- 22:03I made Larry take me out there to prove what I've been telling him
- 22:06about Jennis was true. You proved it. Sure, We waited for him
- 22:11at the bridge. They showed up all right during ninety She couldn't make the
- 22:15curve and they hit the bridge rhythm. He killed them both. Wait a
- 22:18minute, Wait a minute, your stretching baby. Freeman Best body was found
- 22:21thirty miles south. Sure, sure it was because Larry couldn't bear the idea
- 22:25of Janis troutbying found with Freeman's bed. He tried to protect her and keep
- 22:30everybody from finding out what a tramp she really was. He pulled Freeman's body
- 22:34out of the wrecking hall that cleared down the Long Beach and dumped it.
- 22:38I watched him do it. And all this business is just to keep that
- 22:41secret about Jenna's trial. You can you imagine a love like that going to
- 22:47waste? Huh? Even with her dad? Even now, he wanted as
- 22:52much as speak to me. I'm not so bad. I've tried and I've
- 22:57waited, but he won't drop it. So it's all yours, Kirby,
- 23:03and take it. I hope you put it right when he to them.
- 23:07No, that Kirby was just tall. I'm mallow privately take it? What
- 23:12gee? How cheap did I sell out? Anyway? That depends. The
- 23:18only ex time grinding is for a girl named Claire os whenever you hear of
- 23:21her. No, that's funny. For some reason, she hates Salta even
- 23:25more than you. It's horrible. It's horrible. You stay where you are.
- 23:30I'm scared of it. I'll pull his fans. Just talk, get
- 23:33absent minded about which side you're on. Oh horrible? Why's Lally. I
- 23:45don't know. I've been waiting for her. It's covered. Then I got
- 23:47something in parking cover. Oh why he went out for a few minutes.
- 23:52Yeah, I don't like this, sister. You want to hear all by
- 23:56yourself. Something's wrong? What is it? Hell? I what the master?
- 24:00Hold it all? Hi? Why the goud guess? What do you
- 24:07know about Claire Osbond? I don't think I know the party show? You
- 24:11do a cute little brunette named Claire. I want the straight dope on it,
- 24:14and I want it now, not later. I over hid answer my
- 24:17questions her crap, you're working anything out of me? Larrie'll pick care a
- 24:21phota. Yeah, Jirk, maybe there's something on it will give me an
- 24:26answer without talking back. Ook. He always wrote things down on a little
- 24:30notebook inside his chair. Yeah, you're right here it is. Let's see.
- 24:34I'm not sure sure this is it. Claire Usband arrived from San Diego
- 24:38last night by plane. I just did it. Wish your gardens as Claire
- 24:42Usbands recording the driver's license. Her real name is for Pete's sake, no
- 24:48wonder. I'll see you kid. It took me twenty minutes to get from
- 24:57East la Over to Lucerne and another five to find the bleak, white bungalow
- 25:02that belonged to Larry's solver. It's fun windows with dark. When I drove
- 25:04past it, parked on the side street and walked back, but in the
- 25:07rear one window showed a light. The screen door was open, so I
- 25:11eased myself into the service porch, where I could see Solfa sitting at the
- 25:15kitchen table, a look on his face that hurt the pliants, like a
- 25:18small boy accused of something he hadn't done. I couldn't see it was facing
- 25:22him, but there was no mistaking the voice. It was Claire. Oh
- 25:26my yess was everything to me. Now she dead and you killed him.
- 25:30That's true, isn't it. I've already told you once, kid, you're
- 25:33making a mistake. I know I'm not. You're going to pay for my
- 25:36sister's death. No cld'll ever call it murder, but that's what it was.
- 25:40You get it just as surely as if you'd strangled her with your own
- 25:42hands. And now I'm going to get even for Jannet. Claire. You
- 25:47crazy? So why did you come here? Give me that gun? Claire?
- 25:51You can't stop me. Nobody can. Even if you shoot me,
- 25:53Marlowe, I'll kill here. Listen to me, boy, start pulling that
- 25:56trigger. You better know all the fact everything saw her here has done since
- 26:00your sister's death has been a shield and protect what little she herself left of
- 26:04a good reputation. She turned bad, Claire, No, No, what
- 26:10reason have I got to lie? I'm telling you this because it's true,
- 26:11and I can prove it. I've you're trying to trick me. It was
- 26:15your big sister who tricked you years ago. She was no good, that
- 26:18double crossing dirty cheeta. Wouldn't shoot square for five minutes, that's more,
- 26:23and she died. She was too timing, Larry. But even in spite
- 26:26of that, he risked his neck to move the body of the other guy
- 26:29just so she wouldn't be found with a kind of cheap trash she'd been running
- 26:33around with. And you know why, because Larry saw her there. Loved
- 26:37your sister, loved her every bit as much as you did. Yeah,
- 26:41this can't be true. Yes, it's true, kid, all of it.
- 26:48I loved her all right. Just too bad that Jenny's went like she
- 26:52did. Okay, baby, The hutot give me the You know anybody now
- 27:19no better our class? Yes, hope you all right? When I get
- 27:25used to a few new ideas, what's going to happen to me? Now?
- 27:30Yeah, that's pretty much up to you. How do you mean?
- 27:33World spins like mad honey? You have to keep up or get lost.
- 27:40Like I was tonight, I was last mile, Oh terribly. Everything I
- 27:45had any facing with gone. That's because you had blind faith, Claire.
- 27:52You know that's okay for kids, but you're not a big girl now.
- 27:56Ah yeah, I get it. From now on. It's me on my
- 28:02own two feet and my eyes wide hoping. We'll take it easy, baby.
- 28:07It's fun to close him once in a while. After I dropped Claire
- 28:23off at a hotel, I remember the drink I'd started out to get and
- 28:27left half finished on the bar. Well. It was too late now to
- 28:33stop anywhere, so I drove home and poured myself a nightcap in my own
- 28:37applotment. I carried it over to the window and looked out across the city
- 28:42at the endless miles of winking lights, each one of tors Everybody carries a
- 28:51torch for something, some for love. They can never have an ideal that's
- 28:56out of reaching some just for memory. Funny thing, so many dark corners
- 29:04get their only light. I'm a torch that somebody carries. Philip Marlow will
- 29:30be back in just a moment, but first, here's a message from the
- 29:33Forward Dealers of America. More than one hundred and ten thousand delighted motorists were
- 29:38already driving the new fifty Ford. Here's what Jack Ferrell, hotel manager says.
- 29:44I did a lot of shopping around and chose Ford for styling, and
- 29:48I'm certainly glad because I found there's plenty of car beneath its beautiful body.
- 29:52There's plenty of power under the hood too, and it's as comfortable as a
- 29:56high price car. I could go on for hours about the quiet, it's
- 30:00the economy in the comfort of my car. But it all ends up to
- 30:03this. The fifty Ford's a mighty fine card own. We Ford dealers are
- 30:07not surprised that new owners rave about their fifty Fords. We've studied this new
- 30:12Ford from stem to stern. We know every detail of it's fifty ways new
- 30:17for fifty. Well, until you get behind the wheel, you won't be
- 30:21able to believe how good it is. That's the reason we want you to
- 30:23test drive the fifty Ford. The classified phone directly will give you the name
- 30:29of the nearest Ford dealer, or perhaps you know him personally. Why don't
- 30:33you phone him tomorrow before you buy any car at any price. You owe
- 30:37it to yourself to test drive the fifty Ford. He shoreing me with us
- 30:45again next week. Quen, Philip marlow says, this time everything that happened,
- 30:52from the orange haired man with a matt patio for the pitchfork to the
- 30:55body at the covered bridge was wrong, dead wrong. The Adventures of Philip
- 31:11Marlowe bringing you Raymond Chandler's most famous character, star Gerald Moore, are produced
- 31:17and directed by Norman McDonnell and are written for radio by Robert Mitchell and Gene
- 31:21Levitt. Featuring the cast were Sammy Hill, John Dayner, Vivijanis, Harry
- 31:25Bartel Wilms Herbert and Edgar Barrier. The special music is composed and conducted by
- 31:30Richard o'roont. This is Roy Rowan speaking Stay tuned now for Gangbusters, which
- 31:37follows immediately on most of these same CBS stations. This is CBS the Columbia
- 31:42Broadcasting System welcome back. Well, a different sort of Philip Marlow episode with
- 32:02a very different sort of ending, not ending up in an rest, and
- 32:07some great hard boiled dialogue here. I liked Marlow's description of a location about
- 32:16as non Hollywood as an honest day's work. Also, the Ford commercials were
- 32:22interesting, particularly in that William Johnstone played the hotel man Jack Sparrow in this
- 32:34all right, well on to some listener comments and feedback, and we do
- 32:38actually have a comment from Jack. It was posted regarding the price of fame
- 32:45matter, but we have so many comments on that, plus its leads into
- 32:52the episode the Little Wishbone episode fifteen seventy one. Jack says, Adam,
- 32:58thank you for playing two of my favorite old time radio episodes this week.
- 33:01Of the thirty minute Bob Bailey episodes, the one with Vincent Price is the
- 33:06best. And let's us see why Price was perhaps a better radio actor than
- 33:10screen actor. He had such a command of his voice. Jonesy is my
- 33:15favorite Marlow episode and it is the best detective series. What a huge range
- 33:21of emotions more could project. And also just a simple comment from Karen love
- 33:29that Gerald, well, thanks so much to appreciate your comments. And I'm
- 33:34glad you enjoyed the show. And as I said, we'll have more comments
- 33:37regarding specifically the price of fame matter on Friday, and we will be back
- 33:46though tomorrow with an episode of Nick Carter and then join us again next Wednesday
- 33:52for another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. In the meantime, send
