- 0:52It's all taking place here in Sunseeker Resort in Charlotte Harbor, Florida.
- 0:57The conversation is all about small business entrepreneurship in Florida.
- 1:02The lobby here is full of exhibitors and vendors displaying their tools and resources for small business owners.
- 1:11And the room is absolutely full of small business owners and entrepreneurs here to take part in workshops,
- 1:18trainings, breakouts, breakouts, keynote speakers.
- 1:21Incredible gathering of small business owners and operators here.
- 1:26We have one of those very innovative support programs and organizations and businesses
- 1:33that is providing innovative resources and assistance to small business owners.
- 1:40We've got our good friend, Kathy Durfee, who serves as the founder and CEO of TechHouse.
- 1:46Kathy, welcome to Small Biz Florida.
- 1:49Thank you, Tom.
- 1:50I'm excited to be here again.
- 1:51Yes, absolutely.
- 1:52So let's start as we always do, Kathy.
- 1:57Just a little bit of your background, pathway to your current role as CEO of TechHouse.
- 2:03Okay.
- 2:03I'd say the quick version is I was in industry and I had a sick child and I wasn't able to go into the office to work,
- 2:13so I lost my job.
- 2:14And my sister said to me, you know, tech, you have to be home, create a company, call a tech house and go make some money.
- 2:19Wow.
- 2:20So that's how it got started 30 years ago.
- 2:23Wow.
- 2:25Unbelievable.
- 2:25Okay.
- 2:26I love the name.
- 2:28Now I get the name.
- 2:29Take out.
- 2:29All right.
- 2:32We spoke for just a couple of minutes before I hit the record button.
- 2:37I love what you do.
- 2:38So let's talk about it.
- 2:40What does TechHouse do for small business owners and operators?
- 2:44Yeah.
- 2:44We're a mission-driven business.
- 2:46Our goal is every small business, like independently owned small business on the planet, can achieve their goals.
- 2:52That's why we exist.
- 2:53Our part in that is that we provide IT consulting.
- 2:56We do it from strategy to implementation to support.
- 3:00We'll do as little or as much as they want, whether it's break-fix, specific a la carte maintenance, or full managed service.
- 3:06All right.
- 3:07So take me just on a little deeper dive when you say IT support.
- 3:12Give me an example of what that, I get the break-fix, but what would, how would you help me with my IT strategy at my small business?
- 3:20Okay, great.
- 3:21So we have 18 different assessments we do.
- 3:24And I think all of us know in our business, we can do better strategy when we understand where we are.
- 3:29It's hard to do a map somewhere when you don't know where you're starting.
- 3:32So we think strategy starts with a good assessment.
- 3:34And once you have a good assessment, then you can say, how do I get where I want to go?
- 3:38Nice.
- 3:39And this is IT meaning?
- 3:42Great question.
- 3:43Yes.
- 3:44Software?
- 3:45Okay, yeah.
- 3:46Computers?
- 3:46What does IT mean in that small business space?
- 3:50Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:51Because for us, small business is from solopreneur to 300 employees.
- 3:55And we actually serve up to 2,300.
- 3:57But in that space, a lot of people may have an IT person who's doing help desk and security and things like that.
- 4:05But IT is more than that, right?
- 4:06It is our Excel programs that we're using to run our business on.
- 4:10Or it's our accounting software.
- 4:12Or it's our CRM, however we're tracking that.
- 4:15I was just talking to someone earlier who's using Google Sheets to manage their customer base.
- 4:19So all of that is your technology.
- 4:22And sometimes what happens is we may even have a support person to help us with security, let's say, and keeping the computer running.
- 4:30But they basically tell us, well, when you find the package you want, let me know and I'll help you connect it.
- 4:35But you really need someone to help you find that package and make sure it all goes together.
- 4:38So we can provide the whole umbrella, whether it's just strategy and work with your partner or the whole shebang.
- 4:46And I don't think it goes without saying, obviously, that small business owners really are jack of all trades.
- 4:53They've got to be doing all kinds of things.
- 4:55Back in my day, when I owned and operated my small business, I knew nothing about tech.
- 5:01But we had multiple locations.
- 5:05So we were connected.
- 5:06And that was way before.
- 5:08Yeah.
- 5:09Big coax cable.
- 5:12And so this is one of those tasks, one of those areas of responsibility for that small business owner that makes sense to probably turn over.
- 5:25Is that a fair statement?
- 5:27Is that?
- 5:28I think it is.
- 5:29I think in everything, it's knowing our strengths, right?
- 5:31I did not start my business because I won the lottery, right?
- 5:35So we all have to pick and choose and understand our risk sensitivity in different areas.
- 5:40But I do believe having a subject matter expert helping you in anything you don't know well.
- 5:46I tell my team, I feel like I'm a B student in a lot of different things, but I hire them because they're A students at what they do.
- 5:53Right.
- 5:53Yeah, it makes sense.
- 5:54And in today's really business environment, we are tech heavy, right?
- 6:02I mean, this is, you know, we're leveraging the internet.
- 6:06We're leveraging AI.
- 6:08We're using computers.
- 6:09You said we're using Excel.
- 6:11We've got CRMs.
- 6:12I mean, there's a lot going on, even in a small business in terms of technology, correct?
- 6:18Yes, I would say so.
- 6:20And I would like to put out there two thoughts on that.
- 6:22One is 10 years ago, a business need would drive tool adoption.
- 6:30You wouldn't say, I got some time.
- 6:33I'm going to go explore what accounting packages are doing today.
- 6:35Like, let me watch a YouTube video about the latest CRM package.
- 6:39Like, nobody cares.
- 6:40Right.
- 6:40You would be, oh, now I have too many customers to keep an outlook.
- 6:44I need to go find something better.
- 6:45Right.
- 6:46And then the business would drive the technology evaluation.
- 6:48Right now, AI is moving so rapidly.
- 6:51And I'm on a couple of AI advisory boards.
- 6:55And on one of them, somebody recently said, being, there's sort of a cool kids thing going
- 7:01on with AI right now.
- 7:02Do you know the latest tool?
- 7:03Do you know the latest term?
- 7:04Do you know, you know.
- 7:05And then it kind of makes you feel like high school.
- 7:07Am I not keeping up?
- 7:08But I think what all of us as small business owners need to keep in mind is at the end of
- 7:12the day, we're running businesses and those businesses have challenges.
- 7:16And so we drive, what is the challenge or what's the opportunity?
- 7:20And then let's go find a tool to address it, not the other way around.
- 7:22Yeah.
- 7:23I remember, and that's a great, great point and a great story.
- 7:26I remember in my business, again, pre all this AI, I realized that we needed some tool
- 7:35to connect to customers, to keep them updated on warranty dates on their equipment and things.
- 7:43And I bought the program called ACT.
- 7:47Oh, I remember ACT.
- 7:48Yeah, of course.
- 7:49Yeah.
- 7:49And I mean, I was so impressed with what ACT could do.
- 7:52We could send out, you know, email blasts.
- 7:54We could send out letters and we could actually reference the customer's name and the date
- 7:58they bought the equipment.
- 7:59And so, but only because, you know, I had some tool that had directions and somebody helped
- 8:07me with, could I do that?
- 8:09Right.
- 8:10You know, that's kind of where you come in in today's world is helping that business
- 8:14identify the tools.
- 8:16Yes.
- 8:16Yes.
- 8:17And implement in some cases, I would say, you know, when we think about evaluating tools
- 8:21and we're using AI, right.
- 8:23And AI is helping us understand what tool do I need?
- 8:26What problem do I have?
- 8:27How should I fix it?
- 8:28What I would encourage you to do is think about when you last went to the internet, you did
- 8:32a Google search and you asked it some health question.
- 8:35I think all of us have always at some point in our life asked the internet, what's wrong
- 8:38with this, with this health issue.
- 8:40And we get back a lot of things.
- 8:42Some of the things we get back are clearly trying to sell a supplement of some type.
- 8:45Some of it may be the Mayo Clinic, which has, you know, great prestige.
- 8:49So we take our understanding of the topic and we assess it to see how valuable and accurate
- 8:55it is.
- 8:56When we're working with AI to help us understand what we need to do, like evaluating what we
- 9:00can do ourselves, whether it's marketing or tech or legal or any kind of knowledge-based
- 9:05professional service, I would just encourage to say, do you have a subject matter expert
- 9:10yourself or someone in your life who can validate the efficacy of what you're coming up with?
- 9:14Because at the end of the day, you know, the AI is trained on that same digital information.
- 9:20Okay.
- 9:21What does client engagement look like for TechHouse?
- 9:25How does it all start?
- 9:26How does it work?
- 9:27Yeah, we have a pretty well-defined funnel.
- 9:28So I'm celebrating our 30th year this year.
- 9:32Wow.
- 9:34So, so we're pretty well-defined.
- 9:36The first thing that we do is we reach out to have a conversation and that conversation
- 9:42could just be by email because you just, you kind of know what you want.
- 9:45You just need it.
- 9:46Oftentimes though, it's a conversation to try and understand what you're trying to accomplish
- 9:50so we can make sure you get the right solution.
- 9:52Then we do a review with you of that solution, get a roadmap, and then we move forward.
- 9:56It's pretty straightforward.
- 9:58What's your business model?
- 10:00Membership, subscription, by the hour type?
- 10:04Yeah.
- 10:05How do you engage with the client?
- 10:07We say we meet you where you are.
- 10:08So it can be hourly break fix.
- 10:10You can be a subscription for a specific maintenance item, or you can be managed service, the whole
- 10:16thing.
- 10:16Okay.
- 10:17Very nice.
- 10:17Yeah.
- 10:19And you are an exhibitor here at the conference.
- 10:22Yes.
- 10:23Very nice.
- 10:23Yeah.
- 10:23We are.
- 10:24We're excited to be here.
- 10:25It's such a good learning event.
- 10:27This is definitely a conference with powerful, as a matter of fact, one of the people on my
- 10:32team who's manning our booth, she's actually, she was going to be here, but she's just finding
- 10:36the session so interesting.
- 10:37She's still in one of the sessions.
- 10:39So yeah, great sessions here.
- 10:42The purpose of our whole little platform here, Small Biz Florida, when I created this
- 10:47back in 2020.
- 10:48Thank you for doing that.
- 10:50Yeah.
- 10:50I spent 25 years in private enterprise.
- 10:53I never knew about the SBDC.
- 10:56And I'm sure people have heard me say this a million times, but I would give anything to
- 11:03have known about the SBDC and leveraged the resources.
- 11:08So the whole reason we created this little platform was to make sure that we highlighted
- 11:13all the resources and assistance programs and tools like TechHouse.
- 11:17So these are the valuable conversations I like to have to really, again, create awareness for
- 11:25things that people can use to do better in their business.
- 11:28Where does someone find you and TechHouse?
- 11:32Tech-house.com.
- 11:34T-E-C-H-house.com.
- 11:37Okay.
- 11:37That's our website.
- 11:39You can email hello at if you want.
- 11:42Okay.
- 11:43Very nice.
- 11:44And where are you located?
- 11:47Where is TechHouse headquartered?
- 11:48Are you?
- 11:49We're in the Gulf Coast of Florida in the Sarasota-Brington area.
- 11:52Okay.
- 11:52Excellent.
- 11:53But our team's all over the state and our customers are in 38 states.
- 11:56Okay.
