- 0:07Speaker 1: We're back. It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of
- 0:10Speaker 1: Fame broadcaster invoice of the Texas Longhearts, Craig Way.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Here on a Longhorn Ease Monday, Monday afternoon here on
- 0:28Speaker 2: sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone, Craig Way alongside
- 0:31Speaker 2: of the producer Cameron Parker. Let's go back to hearing
- 0:34Speaker 2: from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkesian. This is from the
- 0:36Speaker 2: news conference you heard live this morning at eleven thirty.
- 0:41Speaker 2: You always hear it live every Monday here on the Zone,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and then we recap it during the afternoon for those
- 0:46Speaker 2: who don't get a chance to hear it live when
- 0:48Speaker 2: it happens in the morning. One of the most talked
- 0:51Speaker 2: about elements of Saturday's game the penalties.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Texas had ten for one hundred eight yards.
- 0:58Speaker 2: In his opening statement, which we brought you last hour,
- 1:02Speaker 2: sark mentioned that of the ten penalties incurred, seven were really,
- 1:06Speaker 2: as he called them, impactful because it nullified either long runs,
- 1:11Speaker 2: a good pass downfield, or the pick six that would
- 1:15Speaker 2: have been Kobe Black would have had a pick six
- 1:18Speaker 2: for a touchdown. All that wiped out due to penalties.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So he was asked with this being an open date,
- 1:24Speaker 2: a bye week, and another week leading up to the
- 1:26Speaker 2: next game with Florida at home. Is it possible to
- 1:29Speaker 2: clean up these penalties? No, we can't.
- 1:32Speaker 4: We got our crowd noise sometimes as louder and practice,
- 1:35Speaker 4: and it actually is in the game. And the variety
- 1:37Speaker 4: of penalties was interesting.
- 1:39Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:40Speaker 4: We had one false start, two of our holding penalties
- 1:44Speaker 4: actually came from tight ends. It really wasn't the offensive line,
- 1:47Speaker 4: you know, And so you know, I think it got
- 1:51Speaker 4: kind of spread around enough to where it's hard to
- 1:53Speaker 4: say it's just one group. Even in past protection I'd
- 1:57Speaker 4: love to say it was just one group.
- 1:58Speaker 5: It really wasn't.
- 1:59Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:59Speaker 4: We had a running back issue and protection. We had
- 2:02Speaker 4: some o line issue and protections. We had an RPO
- 2:05Speaker 4: that they defended well where Quinn had to eat the
- 2:08Speaker 4: ball and take a sack. So sometimes you look at
- 2:10Speaker 4: numbers and it's easy to point to that group. The
- 2:13Speaker 4: offensive line is kind of like the quarterback, you know,
- 2:15Speaker 4: when the quarterback always gets too much praise when things
- 2:19Speaker 4: go well, and probably gets too much, you know, criticism
- 2:22Speaker 4: when they don't. The offensive line isn't far behind, you know,
- 2:24Speaker 4: and so everybody's got to do their job better. Clearly,
- 2:27Speaker 4: I think they know they can play better than they've
- 2:29Speaker 4: played the last couple of weeks. And that's that's our job, myself,
- 2:33Speaker 4: Coach Flood, everybody involved, the leaders, Jake Majors, that group
- 2:36Speaker 4: got a veteran group and they've got some good football
- 2:39Speaker 4: ahead of them and they'll get.
- 2:40Speaker 3: There, all right. He was next act to ask about,
- 2:44Speaker 3: I say, a bond.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Clearly Long Warrens missed him, even though they DeAndre Moore
- 2:48Speaker 2: had a whale of a game on Saturday, and it
- 2:51Speaker 2: was asked about the versatility of the wide receivers, but
- 2:54Speaker 2: how his bond and the rest of that receiving core
- 2:57Speaker 2: holding up.
- 2:58Speaker 4: You know, Wingo, we're excited. You know, he was able
- 3:01Speaker 4: to get his first career start. It's unfortunately he had
- 3:05Speaker 4: a little issue in pregame. There was a little collision
- 3:07Speaker 4: with one of their guys that kind of nicked him
- 3:09Speaker 4: up a little bit. Nothing serious, but I think affected
- 3:12Speaker 4: him a little bit. Obviously, Matt Golden with a great
- 3:14Speaker 4: touchdown catch early in that game. DeAndre stepping into his role,
- 3:18Speaker 4: silas Bolden stepped in when when he was needed.
- 3:22Speaker 5: It's been a it's been.
- 3:23Speaker 4: A deep group for us that has gotten tested some
- 3:26Speaker 4: here recently. It'll be critical to get to get Isaiah
- 3:30Speaker 4: back kind of healthy. It'll be critical to get John
- 3:33Speaker 4: Tay back going because we need.
- 3:34Speaker 5: All those guys.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Like I said, we're only eight games into this thing
- 3:37Speaker 4: and we got a long way to go, So to
- 3:38Speaker 4: get all those guys back into the fold, I think
- 3:41Speaker 4: would be good for us. But hey, Ib's a special
- 3:45Speaker 4: player when he's healthy, and I think he's you know,
- 3:47Speaker 4: given him that time was was good for him. I
- 3:50Speaker 4: know he he pushed through as good as well as
- 3:52Speaker 4: he could in the Georgia game, and I just felt
- 3:55Speaker 4: like if I could give him kind of three weeks
- 3:58Speaker 4: to get healthy for for the Florida game, that would
- 4:00Speaker 4: be a heck of a lot better than two.
- 4:02Speaker 5: And so we went with it, and it worked out
- 4:04Speaker 5: in our favor.
- 4:05Speaker 3: All right.
- 4:06Speaker 2: He was also asked about joel Ni McDonald, who got
- 4:08Speaker 2: some extensive time played well in the game as well
- 4:13Speaker 2: in the absence of Andrew Bakuba. He was asked, is
- 4:16Speaker 2: this the best version of Jolani McDonald and one things
- 4:18Speaker 2: hard to let us all know.
- 4:19Speaker 3: John McDonald's had a pretty interesting road.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Jelanie, I still think his best football
- 4:25Speaker 4: is ahead of him. You know, you think about this
- 4:27Speaker 4: guy in high school. He was a high school quarterback,
- 4:31Speaker 4: you know that kind of you know, moonlighted on defense
- 4:35Speaker 4: when they needed him, you know, I mean, he he
- 4:37Speaker 4: was an offensive player that we just saw the raw athleticism.
- 4:41Speaker 4: And then we checked on his dad, and his dad
- 4:44Speaker 4: was one of the leading tacklers in TCU football history.
- 4:47Speaker 4: So we said, okay, there, it's in there somewhere there too.
- 4:50Speaker 4: And then when we got him, we didn't know how
- 4:54Speaker 4: his body was going to evolve. One day he was
- 4:56Speaker 4: an outside linebacker. The next day he was playing corner,
- 4:59Speaker 4: the next d he was at nickel, the next day
- 5:01Speaker 4: he was at safety. We were just kind of trying
- 5:03Speaker 4: to figure out what he could be. All the while,
- 5:06Speaker 4: he had an impact on special teams as we were going.
- 5:08Speaker 4: And so when kind of finally found a home for
- 5:11Speaker 4: him at safety this spring, you can see a lot
- 5:13Speaker 4: of growth.
- 5:14Speaker 5: In his play.
- 5:15Speaker 4: And I think it's been huge for him to be
- 5:17Speaker 4: in a room with a Michael taff and Andrew mccouba,
- 5:20Speaker 4: two guys who have a ton of experience that he
- 5:22Speaker 4: can lean into, and he's really grown at the position.
- 5:26Speaker 4: And again I thought he played a great game Saturday,
- 5:29Speaker 4: But I also think his best days are ahead of him.
- 5:31Speaker 4: This is his first time ever really doing this, and
- 5:33Speaker 4: so just through experience alone his I think his play
- 5:37Speaker 4: is going to.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Improve, all right. So next came a pretty interesting conversation
- 5:45Speaker 2: or at least revelation you might say, from Sark on
- 5:51Speaker 2: a touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore. There was a play
- 5:55Speaker 2: call change at the line of scrimmage. Nothing really that
- 5:58Speaker 2: unusual about that. Those things happen, Quinn, Yours, being a
- 6:02Speaker 2: veteran quarterback, could see something to make that, but it
- 6:05Speaker 2: was the way in which youers executed the change in
- 6:10Speaker 2: the play call since it was coming to the motion
- 6:14Speaker 2: man DeAndre Moore, which made it unique and a little
- 6:18Speaker 2: bit of a unicorn type thing because it doesn't happen
- 6:22Speaker 2: with younger quarterbacks. You've had to been in a game
- 6:25Speaker 2: a while and had a lot of experience to do
- 6:26Speaker 2: what yours did on changing plays mid motion.
- 6:31Speaker 4: So we give the quarterbacks tools to alter route combinations
- 6:37Speaker 4: or alter a single player's route depending on the play,
- 6:42Speaker 4: depending on what we have, and so some games more
- 6:45Speaker 4: than others, I thought Quinn did a great job of
- 6:49Speaker 4: In practice, we had practiced that with him motioning and
- 6:53Speaker 4: then Quinn's signaling the route to him to change the
- 6:55Speaker 4: route in game. Instead of waiting for him to sign
- 7:00Speaker 4: it and to make sure that they might not get
- 7:02Speaker 4: the signal from him, he just voiced it to him
- 7:04Speaker 4: as he was running by, which I thought was pretty
- 7:07Speaker 4: a high level thing for Quinn to do, as opposed
- 7:09Speaker 4: to waiting for him to get there and signaling it
- 7:12Speaker 4: that he might be changing the play. He just told
- 7:15Speaker 4: him what route to run as he was jogging by,
- 7:17Speaker 4: which was a pretty veteran move. You know, that's a
- 7:19Speaker 4: guy in year three in your system that is communicating
- 7:23Speaker 4: with probably one of your smarter players on offense too,
- 7:25Speaker 4: and DeAndre more and then being in sync and being
- 7:28Speaker 4: on the same page. And so I don't think the
- 7:30Speaker 4: other nine guys on the field had any idea that
- 7:33Speaker 4: he changed the route for DeAndre on that play. So
- 7:36Speaker 4: pretty high level stuff with two guys that trust one another.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Yeah, that's pretty impressive.
- 7:42Speaker 2: That's worth of Okay, here's this was another question with
- 7:48Speaker 2: regard to being quote unquote sec ready with regard to
- 7:52Speaker 2: the coaching staff, support staff, everybody as well as the players.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Is everybody ready sec ready?
- 8:01Speaker 4: You know, we're we're going through that now and we're
- 8:03Speaker 4: analyzing that now. You know, I think there's obviously a
- 8:07Speaker 4: lot bigger support staffs in the SEC than ours right now,
- 8:11Speaker 4: and and more more manpower and money allocated to that
- 8:16Speaker 4: aspect of the organization. Like I said, we're analyzing that now,
- 8:19Speaker 4: and and again more doesn't always mean better, but we
- 8:23Speaker 4: are we are analyzing it and kind of doing a
- 8:25Speaker 4: little bit of a self audit of making sure that
- 8:28Speaker 4: that we are putting everybody in the best position to
- 8:32Speaker 4: have success. And we always talk a lot about the players,
- 8:34Speaker 4: but there's a whole recruiting department right that that you
- 8:37Speaker 4: talk about in the man hours that are needed to
- 8:39Speaker 4: do that, whether it's on campus recruiting, off campus recruiting, scouting,
- 8:42Speaker 4: things of that nature.
- 8:45Speaker 5: There's there's gas, there's analysts.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Now everybody can be a coach, and so there's a
- 8:48Speaker 4: lot of things that we're looking at structurally, uh, in
- 8:51Speaker 4: the organization to make sure that we're doing what's best
- 8:54Speaker 4: and uh, again more doesn't always mean better, uh, but
- 8:58Speaker 4: but making sure that we are we do have efficient
- 9:00Speaker 4: and adequate numbers in place so that everybody can can
- 9:03Speaker 4: do their job really well.
- 9:04Speaker 2: All right next was discussion of the screen and using
- 9:08Speaker 2: the screen pass and the importance of it within the offense,
- 9:11Speaker 2: as well as the importance of quinn yours and the
- 9:14Speaker 2: backs being able to execute it.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Quinn is really elite, you know.
- 9:19Speaker 4: He can get the ball out of his hands so
- 9:20Speaker 4: quickly and so accurately. I think, I think back to
- 9:24Speaker 4: Deandre's second touchdown. I mean that was some really high
- 9:29Speaker 4: level stuff. I mean, he's got a blitzer in his
- 9:31Speaker 4: face and he's able to catch and get that ball
- 9:33Speaker 4: out and as accurate as the ball was, DeAndre never
- 9:36Speaker 4: had to break stride and then he's able to make
- 9:38Speaker 4: the safety miss for a touchdown. The screen games critical
- 9:41Speaker 4: to what we do the shallow cross game. The checkdowns
- 9:45Speaker 4: to the running backs are.
- 9:46Speaker 5: So big to what we do.
- 9:47Speaker 4: I mean, we've don't I don't know if people know this.
- 9:49Speaker 4: We don't throw it deep all the time, but every
- 9:51Speaker 4: team we play seems to think that we do, and
- 9:53Speaker 4: so it's like they just love to back up. And
- 9:57Speaker 4: so the value in getting the ball to our running
- 9:59Speaker 4: backs in space with them to be able to make
- 10:01Speaker 4: people miss, even even the third and two of the
- 10:05Speaker 4: ball to Trey Wisner, that that Quinn hits him on
- 10:07Speaker 4: is a critical play in a first down. So the
- 10:10Speaker 4: advantages for us to getting players that are really versatile
- 10:13Speaker 4: that can do those things is huge for us. And
- 10:16Speaker 4: then having the quarterback and can distribute the ball like
- 10:19Speaker 4: Quinn canon those in those arenas.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Sark was also asked if you know after the team
- 10:24Speaker 2: got packed up following the game, they got on the bus,
- 10:28Speaker 2: they got to the charter, they got on the plane,
- 10:30Speaker 2: plane takes off. Did he get a chance to watch
- 10:35Speaker 2: the LSU Texas A and M game you know, while
- 10:40Speaker 2: on the plane, And start at a pretty interesting response
- 10:46Speaker 2: on why he did not get to see or see
- 10:49Speaker 2: very much of it.
- 10:50Speaker 4: You know, you get on the plane, you get on
- 10:52Speaker 4: the bus, and you're headed back, and you know, you're
- 10:53Speaker 4: with your team.
- 10:54Speaker 5: We're focused on what we were doing. We're on the fund.
- 10:55Speaker 4: We got on the plane, I got my iPad open,
- 10:58Speaker 4: and I saw the first interception, and I saw him
- 11:01Speaker 4: go in the game. I saw the first touchdown and
- 11:03Speaker 4: then our you know, we took off, and so I
- 11:05Speaker 4: had to connect to Wi Fi and all that, and
- 11:07Speaker 4: I decided to take a nap. If you can believe
- 11:11Speaker 4: that I haven't napped in a while on a plane,
- 11:13Speaker 4: and so by the time I woke up, it was
- 11:15Speaker 4: thirty eight to twenty three and the game was done.
- 11:17Speaker 5: So then I got a chance when I got home
- 11:18Speaker 5: to kind of see.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Some of the highlights. But looked like you had a
- 11:21Speaker 4: great game. Looked like a great environment. And that's a
- 11:23Speaker 4: big win for those guys.
- 11:24Speaker 2: All right, So there it is. Some more comments from Sark.
- 11:27Speaker 2: We'll hear more from him coming up at next hour.
- 11:33Speaker 2: And uh, I did want to get to this before
- 11:35Speaker 2: we got to the break here. Man Daniel Flores tweeted
- 11:40Speaker 2: this Bojangles is headed for Maynor.
- 11:44Speaker 3: There's going to be a Bojangles location Mayner coming.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I bring that directly to Cameron Parker's attention there because
- 11:52Speaker 2: I knew he would probably be interested in that.
- 11:54Speaker 6: I've heard Liberty Hill, I've heard Round Rock. I've not
- 11:56Speaker 6: seen one yet. Okay, Yeah, there's supposed to be five
- 12:00Speaker 6: in the Austin area. Okay, So there's Manor, there's Liberty Hill,
- 12:04Speaker 6: Round Rock. There's two others.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Cedar Park would seem like a logical place, Cedar Park, Georgetown. Hey, hey,
- 12:11Speaker 3: okay with that, Yeah, we're waiting all right.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Uh, we'll get back through some NFL notes coming up
- 12:19Speaker 2: on Sports Radio Am thirteen under the zone of the
- 12:21Speaker 2: I r A Radio app
