- 1:41then The Mandarin Mystery which you saw Yesterday was released in nineteen thirty six,
- 1:48and it was nineteen thirty nine when Ellery Queen first came to the radio in
- 1:52a series starring Hugh Marlowe. That series lasted one season and then went off

- 3:52Tonight's story concerns the adventures Nikki and I had when a stew pigeon gave
- 3:57us incriminating evidence against Musso's Moose. I call this the adventure of the Singing
- 4:03Rat. Inspector Bucker's paying a visit to headquarters the Singing Rat Singing rad Yeah,
- 4:20show men, bere always glad to see the rats. After Sir Rodent
- 4:25shot, Yes, Sweedie shit that don and keep it chin all right,
- 4:29that's your song today. Rad. Let's an inspector. I got something big.
- 4:32See nobody can hear me? Yes, all right, it's a little
- 4:35shaky inspector. He's got something for us on Mooso on Moosa? What is
- 4:41it? Rat sing let's inspect the queen. I can tell you how to
- 4:45get the moose. But good see you show the moose. But you got
- 4:48to give me protection, inspector, put me in stern until this blows over.
- 4:53Come on, come on, rad what are your god tonight? See
- 4:58twelve shot the most of being in a park car at the northwest corner of
- 5:01Broadway in Facey Street. All you gotta do inspect is the hook. What
- 5:06he's got in the upper right hand pocket of his frest. I've shot that
- 5:10starty menie may a round her. Put the thing in rat and the serah
- 5:15look him on some charge, make it look legitimate. It's fishing a petty
- 5:17lars man. That's no line. Order isn't expecting them? Three men at
- 5:21eleven thirty absolute secrecy. There mustn't be elite. Maybe what's in that master's
- 5:28best pocket is the evidence I've been looking for for five years? Why don't
- 5:46he show up? Boss? I don't like sitting in this park car.
- 5:51You'll be liking meta guys, big a businessman, doll nice. You'll be
- 5:59like, yeah, moo, yeah, But why do we got to meet
- 6:01his nips? Don't streak corners? Wait wide over that guy. You don't
- 6:05understand. That's the way. You're the punk and I am a moose to
- 6:10the mood. He's important pen. Sure I can't make them come up to
- 6:15the apartment like last week, but he's taking a chance. He's somebody.
- 6:18She sees a hymn I most kind of like to them. It's the cups
- 6:23cup. I'll keep your friends right your much that car. Just tell I
- 6:28know, don't start nothing. I can't cover a sergeant, but wi's the
- 6:31line on him, all right, step bad moods, you tell marg waits
- 6:35for a ride. You'r the angel foot before you at the side. Well,
- 6:38come on, hallo, sergeant, you is so about something? Sure
- 6:43we come out, Oh my old friend, inspector queen. Neither of them
- 6:48heil inspect them. Inspect every time you pull in the moose. You gotta
- 6:54let me go again. And you know getting the tired. Oh your I'm
- 6:57tim. I'll stand stive and you won't be ahad through that submachine gun to
- 7:00his back, so we won't get ambitious. Archy. Do you not inspect
- 7:04it? What's the idea? All right, baby, put your hand on
- 7:06the up the right pocket of his vest and take out whatever's in there my
- 7:10vest, you don't do that. And one of my mouth pieces, one
- 7:14of my best, we don't say, buddy, she's a squeeze. I
- 7:18find out who he said, ve ma'am, I kill him. I kill
- 7:23him. And there, ladies and gentlemen, you have the beginning of our
- 7:39mystery. Will be back in just a moment to tell you more. But
- 7:42first, Ernest Chappell. Friends, you like to save money, don't you,
- 7:46And you like past relief from a common six headache, of course.
- 7:50But what saving money got to do with that? Plenty? So listen closely.
- 7:56Right now, at your drug store you can get the large sixty cent
- 7:59size bottle of Bromo selters for only thirty nine cents. Now, anyway you
- 8:03figure it, that's the saving of twenty percent or more than talk about a
- 8:07quick, effective relief. But I'll let mister Howard be Able to Pipersville,
- 8:11Pennsylvania tell you about that. Be right. Whenever I get a common sick
- 8:16headache, I always take Bromo celster because I found out many years ago that
- 8:20there's just nothing better. Recently, I won my wife over to Bromo Celsia
- 8:24two. One day she had a common sick headache, and the preparation to
- 8:28usually took just didn't seem to help her. I persuaded her to let me
- 8:31fix her a Bromo celsis. Well, she was delighted at how quickly she
- 8:35got relief. You can be sure there's always a bottle of Bromo Celter in
- 8:39our home. Ah, mensions of folks do just as you do, mister
- 8:41Abel, which reminds me you old users of Bromo Celter will want to get
- 8:45in on this wonderful special too, but you must curry. This offer is
- 8:48strictly limited, both as the time and quality. So tom are go to
- 8:52your druggist, ask him for the regular large sixty cent sized bottle of Bromo
- 8:56Selters, but pay him only thirty nine. Better still, get two bottles,
- 9:01one for your desk or locker, one for home use. And now
- 9:16let's join Ellery Queen and Nikki Porter as they visit Inspector Queen as headquarters the
- 9:20morning after the capture of Musso the racketeers. What's up, Dad? Why
- 9:24the hurry calls Ahry, He didn't want you. I wanted Nicky, I
- 9:28say me, Inspected, this is Joe Sutton. Would you act as my
- 9:31stenography this morning, making my own man's homesick. And this is very confidential.
- 9:37Musukis. Give me a pad and a couple of pencils, Inspector,
- 9:39and I'll be silent, Susan herself. Dad, don't tell me you finally
- 9:43tied the Moose up to the bankruptcy racket. I sure have. What on
- 9:46earth is a bankruptcy racket? Allery a cute little die to defraud unlucky business
- 9:50people. A firm goes into bankruptcy, A crooked judge appoints some politician as
- 9:56receiver. A crooked appraiser undervalues the property magnificently. It goes for a song,
- 10:01and everyone involved in the racket except the bankrupt and his creditors, makes
- 10:05a heap of crooked money. We've known about this ring for a long time,
- 10:09Nikki. Judge Lampson appoints to receive a phil Bowne. Bind's a stick
- 10:13politician, a little lisping jerked by the name of Paul Ernie. He's a
- 10:18crook of the praiser. The woman lawyer Fanny Wicker handles the league, lending
- 10:22all in the Mooses payroh and we've never been able to prove it. I
- 10:26see NICKI leaning now the singing rap, come in the rat? Is the
- 10:31self right this way? Brother right? Inspector must us out on fair,
- 10:35keep your shirt down. Rap shouldn't keep him in the cell indefinitely at this
- 10:37early stage, but he knows that what's made of crying? I tell you
- 10:41he'll get my hair get nobody real need show those four good citizens into my
- 10:46office. Yes, sir, I've been waiting for this a long long time.
- 10:50In their fault God Quicker Rance, get over there there the window,
- 10:54Lielo, Yeah, okay Ah, Judge Jamson, come in, miss Wicker,
- 11:01Mister Barne, Danny Leady shut that down. She went out interrupted.
- 11:05Oh yes, sir, exact the green. What's so many of this high
- 11:09headed procedures? Tell you a member of the thanks for your office. Like
- 11:11I'm selling. I'll explain in a moment, Johanna, miss Wager, I
- 11:16believe we had the pleasure yesterday when you show up and court with fifty thousand
- 11:18dollars to move those days. Come on, inspector, what have you got
- 11:22You doesn't ask me to your office today to admire my news? Say the
- 11:24lipstick? What a hearty woman? Cried Nikki No and Bill Varne don't see
- 11:31you down here very often. Well, I always say stay away from wine
- 11:35women the police headquarters if you want to keep out of trouble and inspector,
- 11:41Miss darney Man, is something wrong, look sick? You pray the racket
- 11:46good ernie, no complaint, inspector. In fact, today is my busy
- 11:50day. Maybe are not busier? Before I sun down, Miss Jurnnie now
- 11:56last man, I arrested much of the racket tear in his vest pocket.
- 12:01I found a case full of cigarette cigarettes cigarette, yes, cigarette the Moose
- 12:05Fokes a special brand. There is a monogramm in gold leaf. Ver is
- 12:11swanky, the moosehead one of the monogram cigarettes, and the Moose's case.
- 12:16In fact, this one of my dead kids. It's here, then that's
- 12:22it. That one's a very special cigarette, not like the other. Smoto's
- 12:26case looks like one of themselves, like yellow cigarettes. To me, does
- 12:31it, counselor ellery hand me that cigarette? You are there? Is this
- 12:35the problem? Greatest join had Son. Now this cigarette looks like an ordinary
- 12:41Muto's cigarette, but it isn't. It ends up plug with little water tobacco
- 12:46which are removable. See in other words, it's hollow contained something I wonder
- 12:54what it can be? Well, where Emily? What's that piece of paper?
- 13:01Tightly older? The document of some sort Nikki. This document, Mussa's
- 13:05handwriting, is a payroll report. What quote they the judge USA Sat Lampton
- 13:09nineteen thousand dollars for appointing Phil Boyne received from bankrupt where and it's got your
- 13:15signature, Judge Lampton? The fucking my good name? I don't even know
- 13:20mucoll, Inspector. I've seen the judge go up to the most department only
- 13:24Lafe boy So that's why there's notorious step and police informeries in your office.
- 13:28Inspected it was the red he's the one who thinks, Inspector. Let's talk
- 13:33this over. I've got some influence, you know, have you vine?
- 13:37They're gonna need it. Let's cut the salami. What else have you got,
- 13:41Inspector? Queen your signature and receive miss weekend bill bynes and Ernie's no
- 13:48judge. I'd like to get your hands in this little piece of paper,
- 13:52wouldn't it. It's keeping his cancelor. Mister Ernie is the vine. Yes,
- 13:58we get remove temptations. Throw the paper up again to get back into
- 14:05this hollow cigarette thank this, put back the fort to back of plus and
- 14:11they've got the evidence already for the district attorney. All right, don't the
- 14:16three. I'm gonna mix a long time inspector, and I haven't seen a
- 14:18lot of wise tops come and go, Rubert, think you through the court.
- 14:20What do you intend to do? Inspector? I want Musso the Louisian,
- 14:26any one of you who gives evidence to break Muso's power and put them
- 14:30out of circulation. Up to you fall. What's the matter with the singing
- 14:37rest? He's backing away from the window. Hey, doesn't matter. Try
- 14:39and I've thrown across the free fame and a rifle. Mate show the window
- 14:41he's trying to show he fin may don't fare me your racket. That's sailing
- 14:48opposite man with a rifle bigger, Oh got him? Get us going shut?
- 14:54He could let me through here? Please still still going. I couldn't
- 14:56help. I see the rifle. I stuck grabs fine joke. I couldn't
- 15:01start him right, I must have find the moat. He's trying to kill
- 15:03me. Put the boy a matter attempting my office? Born boy? Where
- 15:07are you going? No? I call him babler when you fall a dot
- 15:09rum shot up, gonna stare if there by? What did it hurt?
- 15:13Here's the bluet hole in his coat. But I don't think badly out here
- 15:18I find the womb. Not a sign of blood. Stop crying, boy,
- 15:20what are you crying for? Plane funks, dead, nervous shock,
- 15:24nitten mind? They're all right, John o pet not even a stretch.
- 15:28Thanks good. But the bullet went right throwing stark mine cut through his coat,
- 15:31sergeant, through this cigarette case in his breast pocket and smack up against
- 15:35this steel vest. He's wearing what steel vest? Yes? Dad, see
- 15:39here's the vest and here's the flattened slugs. Ollie, God was a chest
- 15:43bruise. I got up, boy, and stop acting like a baby.
- 15:46Who I'm shaking? Whast Look at the ratmans porter. If he was milk,
- 15:52he'd be butter. Give me a but somebody give me at your arms
- 15:56rat me too, queen. Thanks, I can use one. I guess
- 16:00we all can consolate. No, no, I don't want any. I'll
- 16:03have one of those figure us with spres course guards is turning. Thanks Dan
- 16:07niggin, But yeah, thanks son. Now let's get back the cases.
- 16:14Are you good citizens? Going to testify against Moda, aren't you? And
- 16:18Tiger? I can't think straight. Now, Inspector, give us a little
- 16:22time. Term counselor, Suh, I can give you my aunts and now,
- 16:27don't be hasty. Let's talk this over, okay. I'll give you
- 16:32people just two days to make up your mind. No longer. All right,
- 16:37Billy, let him go. Let's way out your honor. Come on,
- 16:41come on, really, any report of that's feeling across the seat,
- 16:48Inspector. By the time the boys got there, the guy that fired the
- 16:51rifle is taking the potter. I'll never hear the end of this. Sat.
- 16:53The singing rat gone any where the rat goes, I don't know,
- 16:57Inspector. I guess BRODDI rat decide. Police headquarters isn't as safe as he
- 17:02said in a full Now, Mussole, get him sure, really, send
- 17:04out on alarm. Bring the right in. Dad. I'd advise you to
- 17:07be very careful about this evidence on your desk. Put this fake cigarette in
- 17:11a safe place. Don't worry, Son, I'm putting the moose's monogram butt
- 17:15with that payroll report inside the thickest parted headquarter. You better do it now,
- 17:19Dan, there are five desperate people Judge Lamson, attorney Wicker, appraiser,
- 17:23Ernie, politician Boyne and Musso himself who will stop at nothing to get
- 17:29their hands on it. Seems to me we practically live at police headquarters these
- 17:51days. Ellery, I'll say, occasion for this visit to the inspected office.
- 17:55Don't you remember, Nikki, the deadline Dad gave Musso's four distinguished co
- 17:59work because it's up a safternoon. Well, why should that make you look
- 18:03stoopy? This isn't your case anyway, Even if it's good, there's no
- 18:07mystery about it. I know, I know, it's just the same,
- 18:08Nikki. There's something wrong. It's been bothering me for days. Can't put
- 18:12my finger on it. You and your imagination. Here's the inspector's office is
- 18:18really there? We're fine? Glass, Oh, Nikki? Anything new on
- 18:23the moose case inspected? Have you heard from Judge Lanson, the other the
- 18:26other's dad or to hear an a minute? Now? Don't me agree to
- 18:30testify against that slipwrim mobster? Yes, any Wickers inspector was his mouthpiece.
- 18:37Then the guns. We're in something there? I mean it is good news,
- 18:41Ah, it's wicked, is that smart legal brand of yours, looked
- 18:47over all the angles of the corner you people are in. You win,
- 18:49Inspector, Ah, we'll co operate for the DEA, get what evidence we
- 18:55cant against me, though, provided we're protected and the dams the deal.
- 19:00Very smart. Look at the inspected stay galery, he looks positively bliss or
- 19:06something wrong? Something wrong? Where'd you see that? Women? It's Wick
- 19:08him. You're here is spokesman for the whole group or except Judge Lampson.
- 19:15His honor is going to fight in factor. That's the worst decision his honor
- 19:19ever made. So the moose is going down with the counterplaine and I'm bailizy
- 19:27that prolonged excuse me, yes, really, I've been coming to city boy.
- 19:34Where are you? What are you doing in Central Park? Staring nuts
- 19:40with a square? The move? What's about the move? Under with a
- 19:47fright? You'd cloud of reporters? Jellery? What nikin? Oh y queen,
- 20:06what's the matter with you? Nothing, niggie, nothing, It's just
- 20:07that I can't get it out of my mind. Out of your mind?
- 20:11Oh your imagination again. Meanwhile, that racket here is why you're in the
- 20:15park. Murdered yes, you're right, Oh Dad, Well, Mose shut
- 20:22it in the brain emory. He rounded up his gang with a depth,
- 20:26dumb and blindness. What was MOOSEO doing in Central Park? I wonder?
- 20:30Obviously Nikki had an appointment with his murderer. Is he here? Body's lying
- 20:34behind a bush and this clund of trees and those signs of it's being dragged.
- 20:40They were arguing here, Oh, Sagians, did you find the gun?
- 20:44Yeah, min Strong, it's the moose's own rod. One chamber is
- 20:47empty. He struggled over a moose's gun, Emery, and the other gentleman
- 20:51won. He's no gentleman, Dad. How long has the moos been lying
- 20:53here dead? That batty said he was bumped up sometime to day. He
- 20:57didn't die right away, so darn says, don't tell him exactly how long
- 21:02he langered? It had been murder at anytime this morning or ready afternoon?
- 21:06Read it, chick annemies, Dad, Look at this hot I just found
- 21:11it out of the body, This hollow cigarette with the moose monogram on it,
- 21:15A hollow one like the one we got at headquarters. Isn't there anything
- 21:18in his own No? It's empty, Dad. Are you sure the cigarette
- 21:22was a document. There's safe at center's feet. This looks like the identical
- 21:26casing theory. I locked the evidence up myself just the same, Dad.
- 21:30Let's go back to headquarters and check up all right, Dad could have had
- 21:48in that jelluary. Here's the moosey dummy cigarette just because I left it in
- 21:52the safe. Let's see it, dad, Dad, this isn't a dummy,
- 21:56it's a real cigarette tobacco. Ralfrow my evidence. I lost the dummy
- 22:03Monogram cigarette in my safe two days ago. Sign you only thought it was
- 22:07the dummy, Dad. The switch must have been made before you locked this
- 22:10cigarette in your safe. One of those crunked substituted a real Moves cigarette for
- 22:14the hollow one in your office two days ago and spart exactly, Dad.
- 22:18After showing the document to those people in your office, you replaced it in
- 22:21the hollow dummy and put the dummy on your desk. Remember. Oh,
- 22:25yes, they all kept wandering around the office. Yes, would have taken
- 22:30only a second to make the switch a cigarettes Hey, I know when the
- 22:34switch was made. Wherette screamed that somebody was going to shoot it, right
- 22:38Dad, and one of them came prepared to make the exchange. But once
- 22:42one, they all had cigarettes with them. Sergeants, the Jide smoked incessantly,
- 22:47so did miss Wicker. Mister Ernie. We know Boyne had cigarettes.
- 22:49His cigarette case was pierced by that rifle bullet. Any of them could have
- 22:53made the switch two days ago. But how did the stolen one get on
- 22:57the Rusto's body in Central Parking? The thief must have brought up with him
- 23:00today to his appointment with his victim. When I don't understand why knock the
- 23:06moose off? Mindstrong, It's not hard to reconstruct, Sergeants. The thief
- 23:10in possession of the vital evidence wanted money for Musso, money in return for
- 23:15not handing that evidence back to the police. Probably intended to milk them all
- 23:19dry one after the other and started with the racketeers. Yeah, and then
- 23:23figured need to stry the evidence, all right? So whoever stole that dummy
- 23:29cigarette in my office the other day is the killer of Muso? But who
- 23:33looks like a tough one to media? Eh, Cuss, I don't think
- 23:37so, Dad, no El Rijo tell me you know, yes, Nikki,
- 23:41I know who stole the dummy cigarette and murdered the moose and there,
- 24:00ladies and gentlemen, you have the mystery and I hope a solution as well.
- 24:04Nikki, would you be good enough to introduce our guest. I'm chair
- 24:07detectives for this evening Hillery. Our first guest night is and Coriol flamorous stage
- 24:14and screen star who is currently making a record breaking tour of Vadeville theaters who
- 24:18goes to ghost. Miss Cayle returns to Hollywood soon for her next film,
- 24:22It's Wrong Girl. Our second guest is Alfred D. McKelvey, prominent Eastern
- 24:29manufacturer and amateur radio detectives. You know, Ellery, Mister mkelvey's hobby is
- 24:34beating fictional radio detectives to the solutions, so you'd better watch out, all
- 24:40right, Ellery? Thank you? Nikky mis Cariole. Who is the criminal?
- 24:45Well, I am it's rather difficult, but I think the rest stole
- 24:51the cigarette that he has been living in terror of Musso, and he did
- 24:56it to bribe him. Have you any clues? No, except that when
- 25:02the gun was shot off, he seemed to know just what was happening,
- 25:04and he made quite sure that the bullets hitched Burren and not himself. And
- 25:11I think that was all set up so that he could switch a cigarette.
- 25:15Thank you, miss Coriole. Mister m kelvey, who do you think is
- 25:19the criminal? Well, I've missed the meatier guesses in this, so I'll
- 25:22probably miss this. But I guess that Phil Barne did it because of the
- 25:27fact that he showed up in the office opposite the sharpshooter with a vest on,
- 25:33so that there was any poor shooting, he was one fellat that wasn't
- 25:37going to be hit. He also happened to have a cigarette case in his
- 25:41pocket, so he could have been the man to make the exchange in the
- 25:42park, and being a politician, he probably knew his way out. In
- 25:48the final analysis, well, thankuumus Corio mkelvey. You'll know in just a
- 25:52moment how successful you were as armchair detectives. But first, here's Ernest Chappell,
- 25:57a very reasonable man in d Certainly I have reasonable ellery. For instance,
- 26:02when I tell you folks to get two bottles of Bromo celziic, one
- 26:04to keep it home the other way you work, I have two mighty good
- 26:08reasons. Firstly, you never know when a common sick headache will affect you,
- 26:14but you can depend on Bromo Selza to help you feel better fast.
- 26:18For Bromo Seltzer fights headache three ways. Act on heads, nerves, and
- 26:22stomach. You get effective relief quickly feel more like your old self again.
- 26:26Reason number two for buying two bottles right now. There's a wonderful special on
- 26:32Bromo Celzier the regular large sixty cent sized bottles for only thirty nine cents.
- 26:37Now that means you, say, twenty percent or more. But remember this
- 26:41offer is strictly limited both to time and quantity to act at once. Elson,
- 26:59whether gout or that mouth, beasts and skirts, fanning winker, that
- 27:03lifting little appraiser, Ernie No, the thief of the evidence, and therefore
- 27:07the killer of Messau was Phil Boyne. Boyn, that politician, the one
- 27:12that got hit by the rifle bullet by mistake. That's how do you know
- 27:15it was Boyne? Elisie. The clue in this case is psychological, but
- 27:19it's as incontestable as a fingerprint. Consider the situation in your office, Dad,
- 27:23two days ago, Musso or one of his henchmen, in trying to
- 27:27kill a singing rat, fired a shot to struck Phil Boyne by a mistake.
- 27:33How did Boyne react like an old lady gotta start? Yes, Boyn
- 27:37was so shocked by his narrow escape from death, so unnerved that he blubbered
- 27:42like a scared child. Yet when at the height of excitement I offered him
- 27:47a cigarette, he refused it. That's right, he died. The judge,
- 27:52the rat consulate Wicker, Ernie, even new Dad and Nikki were all
- 27:56so shaken by the murderous attack that you gratefully accepted a cigarette to soothe your
- 28:02nerves. Yet Boyne, the man most immediately involved, the man who had
- 28:07actually been struck by the bullet, although unhurt, the man who threw a
- 28:11fit of hysterics. Boyne refused the smoke conclusion. Phil Boyne is not a
- 28:17smoking man. Phil Join doesn't smoke at all. If he were a smoker,
- 28:22even a light smoker, he would have grabbed it a cigarette in his
- 28:25conditions. But Ellie, if Boyin isn't a smoker, why does he carry
- 28:29a cigarette case around with it? He did that day. You said your
- 28:33joba was pierced by the rifle bullet? Yes, Nikki, Why did Boine,
- 28:36a non smoker, carry a cigarette case since it wasn't because he smoked,
- 28:41then that case and the cigarettes in it must have served an entirely different
- 28:45purpose. I see it now, Yes, Ed, we know one of
- 28:48Musso's specially monogram cigarettes was substituted for the hollow one with the evidence in it.
- 28:53Therefore, the thief must have come to your office with a cigarette he'd
- 28:57storn from Musso in advance. In other words, the thief came prepared to
- 29:02make a switch of cigarettes if the opportunity arose. And which of the four
- 29:07suspects did come prepared? Obviously the man who carried a cigarette case but didn't
- 29:11smoke. Then if you'll nab still going right away, there's a good chance
- 29:17he still has that document with its precious evidence on him. And there,
- 29:32ladies and gentlemen, you have the solution to the mystery. I want to
- 29:34thank miss Anne Corio and mister Alfred m Kelvey for appearing his guest armchair Detectives

- 32:07interview men about I'm the airport and tell us your local papers for the timing
- 32:10station. Music for the Adventures of Ellery Queen is by Charles Paul. Welcome
- 32:36back, A kind of interesting episode. In that it portrays basically the police
- 32:44is having contempt for the informants, but there's a general sentiment about that in
- 32:52a lot of films of the day. Overall, a very good puzzle mystery,
- 32:55and we actually get to see how the panel worked, and next week
- 33:04we'll get to hear one of my substitutions in an episode in which that mystery
- 33:08panel portion is mixing. If you would be interested in participating, you can
- 33:14still send any email box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net. We definitely have
- 33:19a lot of episodes where these are missing, so we'd love to have some
- 33:22options. Now. Some notes regarding the cast. Ted Decortia and Santos Ortega,
- 33:31who play Veeley and Inspector Queen respectively, actually had very distinguished careers in
- 33:43radio and both actually twice paid radio detective. Santos Ortega played Nero Wolf for
- 33:52a short season, and he also played Peter Salem in a radio series that
- 33:59isn't comp completely lost, but there are just two clips of it in no
- 34:02complete episodes in circulation. Marion Shockley is actually the first Nicky Porter. The
- 34:10character didn't exist prior to the radio program, but became prominent in the movies
- 34:16of the nineteen forties, So the nineteen thirties movies were comedies. The nineteen
- 34:23forties films actually brought the character a lot more on screen respect The first four
- 34:31film starred Ralph Bellamy, who at the time was viewed as the definitive on
- 34:38screen Ellery Queen, and the next three starred William Gargan, who we heard
- 34:45back in Barry Craig and Man Against Crime. And we'll talk a little bit
- 34:51more next week about Carlton Young, the star of the current series. And
- 34:57there's a lot more we can say about Ellery Queen, but I don't want
- 35:00to tick up that much time in a single episode. You can also check
- 35:07out more on the character at Ellery Queen dot us, a great fansite,
- 35:14terrific resource. We will be back tomorrow with the adventures of Philip Marlow,
- 35:21and join us next Tuesday for another adventure with Ellery Queen. In the meantime,
