Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Down here in the locker room with new UConn head
- 0:02Speaker 1: coach Jason Candle. Week one in the books, a 56-7
- 0:05Speaker 1: win over Lafayette. We talked to you at halftime, but
- 0:08Speaker 1: when you reflect on the full 60 minutes, what did
- 0:09Speaker 1: you like most about what your team was able to do?
- 0:12Speaker 2: Well, I thought we played with great rhythm in the
- 0:13Speaker 2: first half. Complimentary football in all three phases in the
- 0:16Speaker 2: first quarter, and that kind of got us a lead
- 0:18Speaker 2: there where we could, you know, Get some other guys
- 0:22Speaker 2: in the game. A lot of players played today. I mean,
- 0:24Speaker 2: my gosh, we probably played 80 players today. So, you know,
- 0:28Speaker 2: I think you're coming out of camp in your first year.
- 0:29Speaker 2: You're trying to find out what guys can do, and
- 0:31Speaker 2: you're trying to put them in simulated situations like that
- 0:33Speaker 2: in practice, and that can be a difficult task. So
- 0:35Speaker 2: to be able to get them game reps, I was
- 0:37Speaker 2: really happy to see that and really proud of our
- 0:40Speaker 2: first units to be able to go create or lead
- 0:42Speaker 2: to be able to do that. So a lot of things, though,
- 0:44Speaker 2: first game that you'd like to take off the tape?
- 0:47Speaker 2: but like I said before, I truly believe your biggest
- 0:49Speaker 2: jump should be from week one to week two, so
- 0:51Speaker 2: we've got to address the tape, fix the mistakes, and
- 0:54Speaker 2: get better.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Caleb Osborne was the decision to go under center here
- 0:57Speaker 1: in week one. The numbers speak for themselves. When you
- 1:00Speaker 1: look at his performance and what he was executing, especially
- 1:03Speaker 1: in that first half, what did you like most about
- 1:05Speaker 1: what he was doing?
- 1:05Speaker 2: I thought he played very poised. Prior to the ball
- 1:09Speaker 2: being snapped, I thought he had a good command of
- 1:10Speaker 2: that part of it, and usually when you grasp that
- 1:12Speaker 2: at a really high level, you're probably going to be
- 1:14Speaker 2: really good when the ball does get snapped, so You know,
- 1:17Speaker 2: he's a guy that can extend plays with his feet. And,
- 1:20Speaker 2: you know, sometimes when you're on the side of a block,
- 1:24Speaker 2: it's hard to get him on the ground, right? So,
- 1:26Speaker 2: you know, I thought he, you know, good solid first start.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And we're going to make sure that he makes the
- 1:31Speaker 2: necessary corrections leading into week two here.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Again, looking at the run game, 40 carries for 300 yards.
- 1:36Speaker 1: You know, we can highlight the runners, but the offensive
- 1:39Speaker 1: line unit, what were you taking away from what the
- 1:41Speaker 1: front five was working on?
- 1:43Speaker 2: I'd say good first game. I mean, I think that
- 1:45Speaker 2: there's a lot to improve there. I think there's, you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: we want to set the table with the run game
- 1:51Speaker 2: for everything else that you do. And, you know, I
- 1:54Speaker 2: didn't see any communication errors, but maybe one or two
- 1:57Speaker 2: that were, you know, that got us caught up. So,
- 1:59Speaker 2: you know, you want to make sure that you do,
- 2:02Speaker 2: you know, that number should be zero after the game.
- 2:03Speaker 2: You should be, we're all on the same page. If
- 2:05Speaker 2: one guy's wrong, we're all wrong. But I thought, again,
- 2:09Speaker 2: you know, once you get deep into the game, you
- 2:10Speaker 2: start putting other guys in the game, you know, sometimes
- 2:12Speaker 2: that doesn't look very good, and I thought at times
- 2:14Speaker 2: today it looked very good.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Last one for you, 1-0 at home, Rensselaer Field, what
- 2:21Speaker 1: was it like after all this waiting and practicing and
- 2:24Speaker 1: all of that to get four hours to go out
- 2:26Speaker 1: there and see the guys perform in front of the
- 2:29Speaker 1: home crowd?
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's good to be here, good to
- 2:31Speaker 2: get here finally, you know, and get game number one,
- 2:33Speaker 2: you know, just to be out on the grass with
- 2:35Speaker 2: the guys and watch them do what they love to do,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and Obviously, I said this earlier in the week, it's
- 2:40Speaker 2: not really about the coaching staff. It's about these guys
- 2:42Speaker 2: doing what they love to do and having fun doing it.
- 2:45Speaker 2: To get off the start we had today was really
- 2:47Speaker 2: cool to see because I know those guys were energized
- 2:49Speaker 2: on the sideline and everybody was in the game, which
- 2:51Speaker 2: was a cool thing to see.
