- 0:22Well, hey there, everyone.
- 0:24Welcome to the Overpopulated Inspiration History Live show.
- 0:26I am live here on Montgomery University campus,
- 0:29and unfortunately, their Wi-Fi is not, let's
- 0:33say, terribly good.
- 0:34It's actually terribly bad, because I keep going
- 0:37up and down.
- 0:37So I apologize if the stream is not
- 0:39as good as it should be, but unfortunately,
- 0:42they don't really manage the network as well
- 0:45as it should be, unfortunately, but we won't
- 0:47get into that right now.
- 0:48I did finish my software engineering exam before,
- 0:52glad that's over.
- 0:54Now I can chill.
- 0:55Next week is spring break.
- 0:57If you've been here before, I guess I
- 1:00want to say thank you and welcome back.
- 1:01If this is your first time, I want
- 1:03to say welcome to you.
- 1:04It's really great to have you here with
- 1:06me.
- 1:06If you're thirsty, if you're hungry, feel free
- 1:08to go grab something, whether that's a glass
- 1:10of water, soda, a sandwich, a snack, feel
- 1:16free to do that and come on back.
- 1:18And let's kick this show off, everyone, okay?
- 1:21So count it out, Rise Again, series five,
- 1:25show 42, episode number six.
- 1:29That's what we're on today.
- 1:30Because we're on a live campus, we never
- 1:32know if somebody's going to walk behind me,
- 1:33in front of me.
- 1:34It's just one of those fun things.
- 1:36It's great to shoot on campus, but you
- 1:37never know what's going to happen.
- 1:39It could be good, it could be bad,
- 1:41but we just robustly push right through it
- 1:44so that we can keep shooting the show.
- 1:48So welcome, everyone, to the ever-popular inspirations
- 1:50for your life show.
- 1:51I'm John C.
- 1:52Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:56podcast host coach, passionate lifelong learner, graduate student
- 1:59here at Montclair State University, and so grateful
- 2:02now to be a published author.
- 2:04So I have a question for you guys,
- 2:05friends, and the question is, have you ever
- 2:07felt like life knocked you down so hard
- 2:10that getting back up seemed almost impossible?
- 2:12Maybe you lost an opportunity, experienced rejection, or
- 2:16watched something you worked incredibly hard to fall
- 2:20apart.
- 2:20Maybe someone counted you out, or worse, maybe
- 2:23you started counting yourself out.
- 2:26And that's a bad thing, because once you
- 2:28do that, guys, life really starts to become
- 2:31a problem.
- 2:33And so that's what I want to tell
- 2:34you.
- 2:34So I'm sitting right here outside of the
- 2:37beautiful Montclair State University hall, and right between
- 2:41the School of Nursing and the graduate school.
- 2:44So that's where I am.
- 2:45I found a nice little quiet spot.
- 2:46It was funny this morning.
- 2:47It was nice and quiet.
- 2:49Now it's like there's a million people.
- 2:50People have gotten out of exams and it's
- 2:52chaotic.
- 2:54So our weekly series is Stop Waiting for
- 2:56a Sign.
- 2:57Your freedom starts with action.
- 2:59Today, we're talking about something powerful, rising again,
- 3:04inspiring ourselves, which speaks of lifting people from
- 3:07humbleness and difficulty and the circumstances they have
- 3:12to exploring a truth worth remembering and embracing.
- 3:15So your present circumstances do not determine your
- 3:18permanent worth.
- 3:19I think that's the most important thing I
- 3:20want to share with you.
- 3:21And your last disappointment does not have to
- 3:24become your final chapter.
- 3:26Many people make it and then they like,
- 3:28you know, drive themselves down when they have
- 3:29so much more potential.
- 3:30So here are the 30 ways that I
- 3:32put together for you guys so you can
- 3:34rebuild your confidence, restore your hope and rise.
- 3:38Yes.
- 3:39Number one, guys, being knocked down does not
- 3:42determine where you finish.
- 3:44Life can interrupt your plans without ending your
- 3:46possibilities.
- 3:47What matters now is how you respond and
- 3:50what you choose to do next, because your
- 3:52thoughts make things a reality.
- 3:55Number two, your circumstances do not erase your
- 3:59dignity, whether you're facing financial difficulties, rejection or
- 4:04personal disappointment.
- 4:05Your net worth as a human being remains.
- 4:10Never confuse that worth or your net worth
- 4:12with a situation because of a perceived value.
- 4:16Number three, guys, stop allowing setbacks to become
- 4:19your identity.
- 4:20People do it every day, just like precariously
- 4:22don't even know they're doing it.
- 4:23You may have experienced failure, but that doesn't
- 4:26make you a failure.
- 4:27One event cannot accurately describe everything you're capable
- 4:31of becoming.
- 4:32Number four, recognize the strength required to begin
- 4:36again.
- 4:36Starting over isn't always exciting.
- 4:38Sometimes it takes another phone call, another email,
- 4:42submitting another application or just starting over and
- 4:45trying again.
- 4:46Right.
- 4:46We've all maybe filled out a form on
- 4:48a website and the form doesn't go through.
- 4:49So what do you have to do?
- 4:50You have to do it again.
- 4:52Number five, understand that recovery doesn't follow a
- 4:56perfect schedule.
- 4:56I wish it did, but it doesn't.
- 4:59Some people rebuild quickly.
- 5:00Others need more time.
- 5:02And your journey isn't invalid simply because it
- 5:07doesn't match someone.
- 5:09I think a lot of they, you know.
- 5:13Feel that if it doesn't match someone else's
- 5:15timeline, that it's basically not something that they
- 5:17should be doing.
- 5:18But really, that's incorrect.
- 5:20OK.
- 5:22It precludes them from doing something pretty amazing.
- 5:25Number six, stop measuring your worth by one
- 5:28disappointing outcome.
- 5:29You're going to have one.
- 5:30You're going to have two.
- 5:31You're going to have more.
- 5:31Let's be robust about it.
- 5:33And let's move forward.
- 5:34You know, one of the earmarks in software
- 5:36engineering is, you know, when you have a
- 5:38lot of challenges, maybe it's a challenging client,
- 5:41maybe it's a challenging environment or even a
- 5:43challenging solution is the robustness that keeps getting
- 5:47you through it and coming out like a
- 5:49charm.
- 5:50A lost opportunity or unsuccessful attempt can hurt.
- 5:53I get it.
- 5:54But it doesn't cancel your skills, your experience,
- 5:57your relationships or the potential that you have
- 6:00put in.
- 6:01Number seven.
- 6:01Number seven is this.
- 6:03Give yourself permission to rebuild gradually.
- 6:06I know you want to rebuild overnight.
- 6:08You're not going to.
- 6:09So let's just face it right now at
- 6:12true value that you're not going to rebuild
- 6:14overnight.
- 6:14So give yourself permission to rebuild.
- 6:16You don't have to restore everything overnight.
- 6:18Begin with what you reasonably can manage.
- 6:20Then build on each completed step.
- 6:23I think that's another important piece.
- 6:26We build upon something just like if you
- 6:27ever played with Legos or maybe you played
- 6:30with an Erector set or Capsula or maybe
- 6:33you played with cards and you had to
- 6:36stack them right.
- 6:37You had to have a good foundation before
- 6:38you could stack.
- 6:40So number eight is recognize the lessons hidden
- 6:43inside difficult experiences.
- 6:44I'm not going to say you're not going
- 6:46to have challenges that's going to help you
- 6:48grow.
- 6:48Ask what the situation revealed about your preparation
- 6:52priorities or support systems and how that's defining
- 6:55your character.
- 6:56Remember we said before your character is what
- 7:00you develop in private.
- 7:02Your reputation is what people see in public.
- 7:04So lessons don't ease pain, but they can
- 7:08guide better decisions that we'll make in the
- 7:11future.
- 7:11I think that's the important piece that we
- 7:12need to realize.
- 7:13Number nine, separate what happened to you from
- 7:17what remains possible.
- 7:18Your circumstances may have changed, but new paths
- 7:20can still exist.
- 7:22Don't assume that one closed door means every
- 7:25opportunity has just disappeared.
- 7:28Number 10, stop comparing your recovery with someone
- 7:31else's.
- 7:32You may see another person's success without knowing
- 7:35their resources, their support or even their own
- 7:37struggles.
- 7:38Focus on the progress that's meaningful for you.
- 7:41That's the most important thing.
- 7:42Number 11, guys, understand that asking for help
- 7:46can demonstrate courage.
- 7:48Seeking advice, encouragement or professional support isn't a
- 7:52surrender.
- 7:53OK, that's an important thing.
- 7:54Many people confuse that and they just give
- 7:56up.
- 7:57Right.
- 7:57Sometimes the strongest decision is recognize you don't
- 8:00need to carry everything alone.
- 8:02Maybe you need some help and there's nothing
- 8:04wrong with seeking help.
- 8:05You know, when we achieve things, it's not
- 8:07the person that does them.
- 8:09It's a team that they have around that
- 8:10helps make it a success.
- 8:12Number 12, reconnect with people who encourage healthy
- 8:17growth, find individuals who listen honestly, respect your
- 8:20circumstances and remind you of your strengths without
- 8:23pretending your challenges aren't real.
- 8:26I'm not saying your challenges aren't real, but
- 8:28we have to realize that that is a
- 8:30phase, OK, and that we need to overcome
- 8:33them.
- 8:34Number 13, recognize abilities that hardship has helped
- 8:38you develop.
- 8:38Perhaps you become more patient, resourceful, adaptable or
- 8:42even determined about your life.
- 8:44Those strengths may become valuable tools for your
- 8:47next chapter.
- 8:48Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not
- 8:51next week, maybe not even this year, but
- 8:52some point in your life they will rear
- 8:54their heads again and they will come up.
- 8:57And if you haven't learned those lessons, guys,
- 8:59I get news for you.
- 8:59You're going to be learning them again and
- 9:01again and again until you actually learn them.
- 9:04That's a real important thing.
- 9:06Number 14, stop allowing embarrassment to silence your
- 9:10ambitions.
- 9:11A setback can make you reluctant to try
- 9:13publicly again, but protecting yourself from every possible
- 9:16judgment can also prevent meaningful growth.
- 9:19And I think that's something that stops a
- 9:21lot of people, whether you've been doing something
- 9:23for years or whether you just started it.
- 9:25Maybe there's something new you don't know and
- 9:27you suddenly feel like you're a failure or
- 9:29that you can't move forward just because you
- 9:30don't know that one piece.
- 9:32I got to tell you something, you know,
- 9:33even studying in school and doing lots of
- 9:35different things, you know, you're never going to
- 9:36know everything, right?
- 9:38One professor told me, you know, John, you
- 9:39take different courses, you spend more time and
- 9:43you get more degrees, but you don't know
- 9:46everything.
- 9:46So no one at the university expects you
- 9:48to know everything.
- 9:49What they do expect you to do is
- 9:50to learn a lot more.
- 9:51So you learn more in different areas and
- 9:53you become more diversified.
- 9:54Number 15, begin rebuilding your confidence through manageable
- 9:57actions.
- 9:58Complete one useful task, then another.
- 10:01Confidence often returns when you see evidence that
- 10:04you can still influence your directions, because once
- 10:06you believe you can't acknowledge or change your
- 10:09directions, then it's like you're stuck.
- 10:12They're like, oh, my gosh, what do I
- 10:13do?
- 10:13Henry Ford said this and I've said this
- 10:15many times before.
- 10:16If you believe you can, you're right.
- 10:17And if you believe you can't, you're also
- 10:18right.
- 10:19Those are very, very important things to understand.
- 10:22Number 16, guys, recognize that progress may look
- 10:25different after a setback.
- 10:27It's going to happen, OK?
- 10:29Perhaps your original plan no longer fits what
- 10:32you wanted.
- 10:32Adjusting your approach doesn't mean abandoning your purpose.
- 10:36It may mean finding a better route and
- 10:39that actually will help you become a better
- 10:41version of yourself.
- 10:42Welcome, everyone.
- 10:43Thanks for joining me here today.
- 10:45It is Thursday.
- 10:46It is October 15th.
- 10:47It's 2026 and is the second to last
- 10:50day of exam day.
- 10:51Luckily, it's my last exam day here at
- 10:53Montgomery University.
- 10:54And then we're off for an entire week.
- 10:55So that's going to be fun to just
- 10:57chill and relax.
- 10:58Number 17, celebrate small signs of renewed strength.
- 11:02Getting organized, keeping an appointment or finishing something
- 11:06you postponed may seem ordinary to you.
- 11:09During recovery, those actions can represent meaningful progress.
- 11:14Now, I didn't say overnight progress today.
- 11:16I said meaningful progress.
- 11:18That means something you start at and you
- 11:20chip at, you chip at, you chip at,
- 11:21and you get better and you get better
- 11:23and you get better and you get better.
- 11:24What you don't do is become an expert
- 11:27overnight, right?
- 11:28Whether I'm studying AI, whether I'm studying more
- 11:30engineering, you don't become an expert overnight.
- 11:33You become an expert by spending more time
- 11:36in the field, in the discipline.
- 11:38But that was something I learned here at
- 11:40college is that they don't expect you to
- 11:41master every concept in an area.
- 11:44They want you to get more diversified so
- 11:46that, you know, just a little more in
- 11:48each area.
- 11:49Number 18, stop expecting immediate transformation.
- 11:53A powerful motivational moment can inspire you, but
- 11:57lasting recovery usually requires patience, consistent action, and
- 12:02guys, realistic expectations.
- 12:05I think sometimes people put unrealistic expectations on
- 12:07themselves and then they cry and then they
- 12:09yell and scream that they can't get anywhere
- 12:11because they made the challenge too hard.
- 12:15You've got to push yourself a little bit
- 12:17past the envelope.
- 12:18I didn't say push yourself off the ship,
- 12:21right, or off the plank, just a little
- 12:23bit uncomfortable.
- 12:24Number 19, give yourself room to experience difficult
- 12:27emotions, disappointments, sadness, frustration, uncertainty are real.
- 12:32You don't need to pretend everything is wonderful
- 12:33to remain committed to moving forward.
- 12:35For example, I just learned this past Sunday,
- 12:38my uncle on my mom's side was very,
- 12:41very sick and he has had cancer for
- 12:43many years.
- 12:44Didn't know this because our families weren't talking
- 12:46for a while.
- 12:48And I went to go see him when
- 12:50I learned about this.
- 12:51And then he just passed away literally just,
- 12:53I believe it was yesterday.
- 12:54And everybody kept this from me because they
- 12:56didn't want it to get in the way
- 12:57of my exams, which I appreciate.
- 12:59I literally just learned about an hour after
- 13:01my exam.
- 13:02I just got back from Montgomery University's faculty
- 13:04student dining room and I had a really
- 13:06great lunch.
- 13:08If you'd like to learn more about that,
- 13:09go check that out at Jason Academy dot
- 13:11com.
- 13:11It'll probably be posted later this week or
- 13:13early next week.
- 13:14We do a day in the life with
- 13:15John and it was really cool.
- 13:17And they even had this great drink called
- 13:18horchata, which is like maybe some of you
- 13:20know about.
- 13:21It's rice that's actually put aside for a
- 13:25day.
- 13:26You have to drain it.
- 13:27Then they put condensed milk in it.
- 13:29Pretty amazing.
- 13:29And it was really delicious.
- 13:30And it wasn't really sweet.
- 13:31So number 19, guys, is give yourself room
- 13:33to experience difficult emotions, right?
- 13:36That's the important thing.
- 13:37So even though this is a difficult emotion,
- 13:39we have to process it.
- 13:41We even had somebody at our university.
- 13:42I don't know them, but they sent an
- 13:43email out that somebody passed away.
- 13:46It was a young student and it was
- 13:48a no fault of their own that it
- 13:50happened.
- 13:50OK, or no fault of any.
- 13:55Number 20, protect your hope, reality.
- 13:59Hope exists.
- 14:00We have to embrace it.
- 14:02Hope isn't pretending obstacles don't exist.
- 14:04It's acknowledging those obstacles while believing there may
- 14:08still be a constructive set of steps worth
- 14:12taking.
- 14:12I think that is one of the most
- 14:13important things that I can tell you, guys,
- 14:15is that hope is what leads you to
- 14:17where you are today and what takes you
- 14:20tomorrow and be gone.
- 14:22There might be sad points in your life,
- 14:24either from yourself or family or what have
- 14:26you, but you need to get over them.
- 14:28Right.
- 14:29We need to learn from those situations.
- 14:31Number 21, recognize when old disappointments influence new
- 14:36opportunities.
- 14:37A previous rejection can make every new possibility
- 14:40feel dangerous.
- 14:41Evaluate today's opportunity on its own merits instead
- 14:44of assuming history must repeat itself.
- 14:46So I'm going to give you an example.
- 14:47I'm not going to give you the name
- 14:48of the people because that would be unfair
- 14:49and that would be kind of breaking kind
- 14:52of confidentiality and security.
- 14:54So I was somewhere today and I had
- 14:56finished my exam and there was somebody I
- 14:59saw there was a there was a let's
- 15:01say a teacher and advisor and they were
- 15:04in the room with somebody, but they weren't
- 15:05actually talking.
- 15:07So what I did was I just knocked
- 15:08on the glass door and they emphatically were
- 15:12pointing me like I'm in a meeting, like
- 15:13really like an angry kind of tone.
- 15:15Instead of like I'm in a meeting.
- 15:17So I'm just like, what the heck?
- 15:18Right.
- 15:19So I realize that that person is somebody
- 15:23I probably don't want to connect with again.
- 15:27I'll be cordial with them, but there was
- 15:29no need for them to get all emphatically
- 15:32upset just because I knocked on the glass.
- 15:35Somebody was sitting there.
- 15:36I had a quick question.
- 15:37They could just sit him in a meeting
- 15:39and just point it like I'm in a
- 15:40meeting and they're like that.
- 15:42So like, what the heck?
- 15:43So I realize that other people have things
- 15:48they need to process.
- 15:49Right.
- 15:49But take into account how people treat you.
- 15:53OK, that's important.
- 15:55And that disappointment influenced that day, but also
- 16:01influencing the steps I take with that person
- 16:03in the future.
- 16:04A previous rejection can make every new possibility
- 16:06feel dangerous, evaluate today's opportunity on its own
- 16:11merits instead of assuming history must repeat.
- 16:14I had another person I was leaving and
- 16:17I said to the person, have a good
- 16:19weekend.
- 16:19And I just said, I have a question.
- 16:21And they were nasty saying they're in a
- 16:23meeting.
- 16:23They just say, hey, John, I'm in a
- 16:24meeting.
- 16:26So that's the thing.
- 16:27I think we need to be cognizant, aware
- 16:30of how we portray ourselves to other people.
- 16:33That's probably one of the biggest lessons I
- 16:35can share with you guys for today.
- 16:36Number 22, please rebuild routines that support your
- 16:41confidence.
- 16:42You don't need to support others.
- 16:44Regular sleep, movement, planning, meaningful work and supportive
- 16:50relationships can provide stability when other parts of
- 16:54your life feel uncertain and a little bit
- 16:57off balance.
- 17:03Number of treating temps.
- 17:05Right.
- 17:06What happened today in my life, it was
- 17:07temporary.
- 17:08But it also says to me, hey, John,
- 17:10I'm not going to go to that person
- 17:12again.
- 17:13I see how they taught me.
- 17:14I'm going to let them come back to
- 17:15me.
- 17:16But I'm also not going to approach them
- 17:17about anything because of the way I was
- 17:20made to be feeling today.
- 17:22You may not have the resource, the energy
- 17:24or the opportunity you need today.
- 17:26That doesn't automatically mean those conditions can never
- 17:28change.
- 17:29I get that people have a bad moment.
- 17:31I get it.
- 17:32So if that happens to you, a little
- 17:34email back.
- 17:35Hey, John, I didn't mean to be rude
- 17:37to you today.
- 17:37I'm sorry if that's how it came off.
- 17:40A lot of these people, they have different
- 17:42degrees.
- 17:43And this is something I want to tell
- 17:44you as I get on with my degrees
- 17:46and other masters, a Ph.D. I'm never
- 17:48going to treat people badly because I may
- 17:52have more credentials or more degrees.
- 17:55That's an important piece.
- 17:57Right.
- 17:58So that's very, very important to understand.
- 18:03And remember, ladies and gentlemen, previous challenges you've
- 18:06already overcome.
- 18:07Twenty four.
- 18:08Think about a difficult period.
- 18:09You survived.
- 18:10What helped you through it?
- 18:11Which skills or relationships could support you again?
- 18:14Today, I had somebody that was a little
- 18:16bit nasty.
- 18:18A second person, not as rude, but still
- 18:20a bit nasty.
- 18:21So I didn't get upset.
- 18:22I just basically brushed it off and said,
- 18:25I'm going to lunch.
- 18:26That's how that person wants to act.
- 18:29I'm not going to interact with that person
- 18:30anymore.
- 18:31Very simple.
- 18:33Number twenty five.
- 18:34Allow new possibilities to emerge from changed circumstances.
- 18:40Now, I know that's a lot to unpack,
- 18:42but let's try to do this together.
- 18:44Sometimes a setback forces you to reconsider a
- 18:47direction that no longer serves you anymore.
- 18:49It can happen.
- 18:50Right.
- 18:50People change.
- 18:52People fall apart in relationships, your tasks, your
- 18:55goals.
- 18:56They might change.
- 18:57Right.
- 18:58Your ambitions change.
- 18:59Stay open to opportunities you might previously have
- 19:02overlooked.
- 19:04Let me see if I give an example.
- 19:06Many years ago, a friend of mine was
- 19:09telling me about skeet shooting.
- 19:10I knew nothing about skeet shooting.
- 19:12And because of him, I went skeet shooting
- 19:15and now I can do pretty well.
- 19:17I remember I could hit one out of
- 19:18ten.
- 19:19I think now I can hit eight out
- 19:21of ten, which is pretty good.
- 19:22OK, number twenty six.
- 19:25Guys recognize that resilience includes knowing when to
- 19:29rest.
- 19:30I think that's the hardest thing for a
- 19:32lot of people, especially in the United States.
- 19:34We don't rest enough.
- 19:36Right.
- 19:37I know I try to always be good
- 19:39to my body.
- 19:40I try to say no when I know
- 19:41I need to rest.
- 19:43It's not about me being a people pleaser.
- 19:45That's not going to help, John.
- 19:46OK, it's not going to help you either.
- 19:48So realize it's OK to say no to
- 19:51others, because when you do, you're saying yes
- 19:52to yourself.
- 19:53Rest is a good thing.
- 19:55Constant effort without recovery can leave you exhausted.
- 19:59OK, rest is not the opposite of progress.
- 20:01It can be part of what makes progress
- 20:03sustainable.
- 20:04So I see we're having some issues back
- 20:06and forth here with the wonderful MSU Wi
- 20:09-Fi.
- 20:09Again, we're right in the middle of a
- 20:11courtyard here and they don't really have the
- 20:13outdoor Wi-Fi configured that well.
- 20:15And then we've got students, you know, thousands
- 20:17of students here on the phones.
- 20:18And not to mention that they're probably not
- 20:20managing the Wi-Fi, you know, communication very
- 20:24well.
- 20:25Number 27, guys, help someone else who is
- 20:29struggling to rise.
- 20:31Encouragement, practical assistance or simply just listening can
- 20:37make a huge difference to someone else that
- 20:39might be going through something or trying to
- 20:41achieve a goal.
- 20:42Right.
- 20:43Your experience may help someone feel less alone
- 20:46in their own challenge.
- 20:47So what I like to say about today
- 20:49is, you know, the way I was treated
- 20:51today and how that happened, I'm not making
- 20:53a big deal that I'm going to drop
- 20:55it.
- 20:59I just.
- 21:01And I'm going to be like, oh, I'm
- 21:03not going to fall over that person anymore.
- 21:05And I think that's a big thing to
- 21:06understand that once you're nasty to me, I'm
- 21:11not going to be rude to you, but
- 21:13I'm also not going to kiss up or
- 21:14I'm not going to fall over you anymore
- 21:16because you get one chance to be nice
- 21:18to me.
- 21:19If you decide you're not going to be
- 21:20nice, I'll still be cordial to you, but
- 21:22I'm no longer going to bend over backwards
- 21:24for you.
- 21:25Number 28, guys, understand that dignity isn't something
- 21:29success gives you.
- 21:31That's important.
- 21:33Recognition, money, titles and accomplishments may change your
- 21:36circumstances, but they don't create your basic human
- 21:41worth.
- 21:42Other degrees, more money doesn't make you more
- 21:45worthy of a person.
- 21:46It does in some people's eyes.
- 21:48Right.
- 21:49Because like, well, what can you do for
- 21:50me?
- 21:51Which is a bad attitude.
- 21:53You already possess that right now.
- 21:57Why did I go back to school?
- 21:59I wanted to.
- 22:00No one told me to go back to
- 22:02school and get another master's and get a
- 22:03PhD.
- 22:04No one told me to do that.
- 22:05I wanted to do that.
- 22:07I'm not here, though, to throw in anybody's
- 22:08face.
- 22:09I'm not here to be nasty about people.
- 22:11I might say, hey, you know, I got
- 22:12two masters, the PhD.
- 22:14I'm not here to do that.
- 22:15I'm here to be respectful and use the
- 22:19knowledge that I have to grow my life,
- 22:22but never to shove in someone's face.
- 22:24I think a lot of people use degrees
- 22:25and money to shove in people's face.
- 22:27The money I have, I don't use it
- 22:29to shove in someone's face.
- 22:31I like to do things anonymously.
- 22:33Number 29, guys, choose one meaningful step toward
- 22:38rebuilding your future.
- 22:39Don't attempt to solve every problem at once.
- 22:41Identify one action that moves you toward greater
- 22:45stability, confidence or even opportunity.
- 22:48I'm just saying one.
- 22:50I didn't say 10.
- 22:51That's an important piece.
- 22:53Number 30, guys, rise because your story is
- 22:56still being written and it is.
- 22:58By the way, I'm writing another book.
- 23:00You cannot rewrite every event in your past.
- 23:03Just it's not going to happen.
- 23:05But you can participate in shaping what comes
- 23:08next in your future.
- 23:10So your next chapter deserves a chance.
- 23:13So many people have said, you know what?
- 23:14I failed in chapter one.
- 23:15I failed in chapter three.
- 23:16But they don't go back to those chapters.
- 23:20What made me go back to school?
- 23:23I think it was the situation of breaking
- 23:26my tip and fib and knowing that I
- 23:28wanted to do more in my life.
- 23:31And that was just like a realization that
- 23:35I had.
- 23:35I think that's something that a lot of
- 23:37people don't understand is that, you know, your
- 23:40choices change.
- 23:42You need to live your own life.
- 23:44You're not living someone else's life, your boyfriend,
- 23:46your girlfriend, your parents, your grandparents.
- 23:48You're not living their life.
- 23:49You're living your life.
- 23:51You should be here because you want to
- 23:52be here, not because somebody told you to
- 23:54be here.
- 23:54I know the normal standard is, you know,
- 23:56you go to you go to pre-K
- 23:58or you go to grammar school, you go
- 23:59to high school, and then after that, you
- 24:02know, you go to college.
- 24:03That's the standard.
- 24:04But do you really want to do that?
- 24:06You don't have to go to college.
- 24:08If you don't want to be here in
- 24:09college, you don't have to be here.
- 24:11It's not for everyone.
- 24:12And that doesn't mean you're a bad person
- 24:14because you're not getting a degree.
- 24:15I just want to be clear about that.
- 24:16Number 30, guys, let's rise because your story
- 24:19is being written.
- 24:20And I mean this.
- 24:21Your story is evolving every single day.
- 24:24And I want to reemphasize this.
- 24:26Participate in it.
- 24:27Life is a participatory sport, a participatory sport,
- 24:31meaning you don't just sit here and just
- 24:33things just come to you.
- 24:39Only by some of the university shows.
- 24:44So I'm really excited to bring this message
- 24:47to other universities across the globe, not just
- 24:50in the United States.
- 24:52I feel that if I can help just
- 24:54one person change something in their life to
- 24:57make it better, I've done an amazing job.
- 25:00So I know you don't believe that your
- 25:01story can be rewritten or that your story
- 25:03is still being written because maybe you're like,
- 25:05I'm this age or I'm this.
- 25:15Do you the most important thing?
- 25:16No one in the world is saying you
- 25:18can't learn.
- 25:19No one's saying that you can't do anything
- 25:21else.
- 25:21That is your decision.
- 25:24Number that we have to understand is that
- 25:26it's powerful.
- 25:27So number 30 is a real powerful.
- 25:29Now, here is your challenge for Thursday.
- 25:32Let's think about one difficult experience you face.
- 25:35Just one, not a million.
- 25:37What strength did you develop because you had
- 25:39to navigate it?
- 25:40Maybe it was patience, determination, creativity or the
- 25:44courage to ask for help.
- 25:45Today, I face some people being rude to
- 25:47me.
- 25:48Did that ruin my day?
- 25:49No, I went and had lunch.
- 25:51And I said, if that's how they're going
- 25:53to treat me, fine.
- 25:55It's OK.
- 25:56I'm not looking for an apology, but I'm
- 25:58also not going to kiss up to them
- 26:00either.
- 26:01Identify that strength.
- 26:03Mine was resilience.
- 26:04Mine was just letting it roll off and
- 26:06saying, you know, I'm not going to just
- 26:09kiss up to people just because they have
- 26:11more degrees than me or because they have
- 26:13a higher level in the academic world.
- 26:16Identify that one strength, then use it to
- 26:19take one constructive step toward your future.
- 26:22Make the step practical, make it achievable and
- 26:25give yourself credit for following through.
- 26:27Now, a lot of people I've told about
- 26:28my book, they may not be interested.
- 26:30And that's fine.
- 26:31I only mention it once to people, even
- 26:33academic people.
- 26:35Remember, our weekly journey began Saturday when we
- 26:37learned to recognize together what was holding you
- 26:40back.
- 26:41Sunday, we learned to choose a meaningful direction.
- 26:44Monday, we began to break free from limiting
- 26:46patterns.
- 26:47Tuesday, we learned to stand firm and protect
- 26:50our boundary.
- 26:50Wednesday, we explored how to trust ourselves enough
- 26:54to act without perfect certainty.
- 26:57Today, Tuesday, we rise again.
- 27:01We recognize that disappointment doesn't erase our dignity
- 27:03and the rebuilding that can happen and begin
- 27:07with just one courageous step.
- 27:09And tomorrow, ladies and gentlemen, yep, we'll bring
- 27:12everything full circle together live, free, discovering how
- 27:17to make intentional living a lasting part of
- 27:21our lives.
- 27:21That's why most people hate their lives because
- 27:23they're not intentional with what they're doing.
- 27:25Ladies and gentlemen, I'm John C.
- 27:26Morley here, serial entrepreneur.
- 27:27Thank you so much for choosing to join
- 27:28me on the amazing inspirations for your life.
- 27:31Remember, ladies and gentlemen, being counted out by
- 27:35someone else doesn't mean you have to count
- 27:38yourself out.
- 27:38You are more than your last setback and
- 27:42your future is not finished.
- 27:44I think that's the most important thing I
- 27:47want you to understand.
- 27:49I want you to stay driven.
- 27:50I want you to keep learning and I
- 27:52want you to realize that what other people
- 27:54say about you is not what you're becoming.
- 27:58It's their perception.
- 28:00Don't let it become your life.
- 28:01Have a great one, everyone.
- 28:03And remember, don't let people count you out.
- 28:06Count yourself out.
- 28:07Have a great one and be well, everyone.
