- 0:08Speaker 1: Matter up. Alec Burlason of the Cardinals joining us right now,
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'll give me one phone flip so that we can
- 0:14Speaker 1: see you straight and sideways. Boom, there it is, is looking great,
- 0:18Speaker 1: doing great? Yes, Hey, how you doing. How's the season
- 0:21Speaker 1: going so far? For I think a team that you know,
- 0:23Speaker 1: the public said, oh, this is the rebuild year. Cardinals
- 0:27Speaker 1: are seven and five. You have a lot of guys
- 0:28Speaker 1: that you've been playing with for years that are starting
- 0:30Speaker 1: to break out. How does it look from your end?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yeah, first of all, thanks for having me. But it's
- 0:37Speaker 2: just been a lot of fun. Like obviously, I came
- 0:39Speaker 2: up with a lot of these guys and you know,
- 0:44Speaker 2: being around in for years, watching them, you know, progress
- 0:47Speaker 2: through the minors and then you know, make their debuts
- 0:50Speaker 2: and we all kind of came up together, and it's
- 0:52Speaker 2: just it's a really fun clubhouse. Like I don't feel
- 0:54Speaker 2: like there's any uh, you know, clicks or anything like
- 0:57Speaker 2: nobody's know in little groups. We're all together and it's
- 1:02Speaker 2: just been a lot of fun to be with these
- 1:03Speaker 2: guys every day.
- 1:04Speaker 3: What does a fun clubhouse in Saint Louis look like?
- 1:07Speaker 3: Because I know when some of you guys first came
- 1:09Speaker 3: up talking to some of the younger guys in spring
- 1:11Speaker 3: training or just like different times I see guys they
- 1:14Speaker 3: were like, dude, these guys have so many rules, like
- 1:18Speaker 3: we gotta wear beat, we gotta wear our jersey during
- 1:20Speaker 3: BP it's so hot. No other teams do that. So
- 1:23Speaker 3: what does that look like for you guys in the
- 1:25Speaker 3: sense of like, well, we are our own people, we're
- 1:29Speaker 3: our own group. We're gonna create this the way we
- 1:31Speaker 3: want to create it moving forward.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I think there's.
- 1:38Speaker 2: There's obviously a way to be a big leaguer, right,
- 1:40Speaker 2: there's a certain way to go about your business and
- 1:42Speaker 2: be a big leaguer and get your work in, do
- 1:45Speaker 2: your video work.
- 1:46Speaker 4: All that good stuff.
- 1:48Speaker 2: But I think it's I think we've set the standard
- 1:51Speaker 2: where you know, you're you're gonna do that stuff, You're
- 1:53Speaker 2: gonna get your work in, you're gonna watch video, you're
- 1:56Speaker 2: gonna you know, we're gonna have meetings and stuff, all
- 1:58Speaker 2: that all that good stuff. But in between that, like
- 2:00Speaker 2: we're gonna have fun, We're gonna, you know, go to dinners,
- 2:03Speaker 2: We're gonna you know, even in the dugout during games,
- 2:06Speaker 2: Like it's it's it's just different, like it's hard to
- 2:09Speaker 2: put into words like what the feel is. But we
- 2:16Speaker 2: just have a lot of guys that are just playing
- 2:17Speaker 2: with their hair on fire, and you know, I think
- 2:20Speaker 2: we've got some good results out of it so far.
- 2:22Speaker 4: But yeah, it's it's it's a it's a good group.
- 2:26Speaker 2: We're young, but we have experience and looking forward to
- 2:29Speaker 2: seeing what we can do.
- 2:31Speaker 5: Uh.
- 2:32Speaker 4: You know. Moving forward, I want.
- 2:34Speaker 6: To talk about you personally as a hitter. H Can
- 2:37Speaker 6: you talk about your approach? Can you talk about how
- 2:41Speaker 6: you go about each and every day?
- 2:43Speaker 1: What's your plan?
- 2:44Speaker 6: Uh in the in the batting cage, Like, how do
- 2:47Speaker 6: you get your day going?
- 2:49Speaker 1: Hitting wise?
- 2:49Speaker 6: I know there's probably a video you watch, but for
- 2:51Speaker 6: you ultimately take us through, you know, a day for you,
- 2:55Speaker 6: how you get set up and and and what's your approach?
- 2:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I could probably sit here for up hours and and
- 3:01Speaker 2: go into detail with all that stuff.
- 3:02Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean i'd show up.
- 3:06Speaker 1: You know.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I found out last year that a bigger, the biggest
- 3:10Speaker 2: part of my day is the first part of the day.
- 3:12Speaker 2: When I get in the weight room, I get my
- 3:13Speaker 2: body moving, uh.
- 3:14Speaker 4: In the ways that I need it to move.
- 3:16Speaker 7: Uh.
- 3:17Speaker 4: So I take that very seriously. So I'm in the
- 3:19Speaker 4: weight room first thing.
- 3:20Speaker 2: If there's anything in the training room I need, uh,
- 3:23Speaker 2: you know, knock that stuff out, but definitely take pride
- 3:25Speaker 2: in the weight room work, get my body moving, like
- 3:28Speaker 2: I said, the way I need it to move. And
- 3:29Speaker 2: then you know, my cage routine is strictly based on
- 3:34Speaker 2: what the starter's doing that day.
- 3:35Speaker 8: Uh.
- 3:36Speaker 2: You know, I practice, we call it practice all your shots,
- 3:38Speaker 2: whatever shots I need to take that day, uh, for
- 3:42Speaker 2: whatever that starter calls for. You know, I practice those
- 3:45Speaker 2: in the cage and then you know, come out and
- 3:49Speaker 2: maybe take VP on the field. You know, most of
- 3:53Speaker 2: the time I'm in the cage taking BP. I don't
- 3:54Speaker 2: do too much on the field. But yeah, and the
- 3:57Speaker 2: right before the game, I'm on a machine with a
- 3:59Speaker 2: lot of VLAs, trying to get my body ready to go.
- 4:02Speaker 2: H You know, I felt in the past that the
- 4:05Speaker 2: first inning hasn't been my best friend. I wasn't ready
- 4:07Speaker 2: to go. So I've really tried to hone in on
- 4:11Speaker 2: that this year and be ready to go in the
- 4:12Speaker 2: first inning. So yeah, that's the basics of it. It's
- 4:18Speaker 2: very it's a lot more detail oriented than I just
- 4:21Speaker 2: talked about it, but it's something that worked for me.
- 4:24Speaker 3: So since you hit in the cage or does that
- 4:26Speaker 3: mean you're a you're a trajectorman you use the troject
- 4:30Speaker 3: all the time or is that not part of your stick?
- 4:35Speaker 2: I use it a little bit more in spring just
- 4:37Speaker 2: to see, you know, you haven't faced live pitching, just
- 4:42Speaker 2: to use that a little bit. But no, I don't
- 4:44Speaker 2: typically use it. I just used the regular machine and
- 4:50Speaker 2: kind of shape that fastball for whatever that starter's fastball has.
- 4:54Speaker 2: If there's somebody I haven't seen or they have a
- 4:56Speaker 2: funky arm action or release point, whatever it is, I
- 4:59Speaker 2: may jump on there, but I'm not you know, I'm
- 5:01Speaker 2: not on that thing religiously like some of our guys.
- 5:04Speaker 3: All right, I got two guys and I want you
- 5:07Speaker 3: just there are two different points in their career, but
- 5:09Speaker 3: they're both have started out really well. JJ weatherholpt rookie something,
- 5:14Speaker 3: possibly Rookie of the Year. Jordan Walker. I think he's
- 5:18Speaker 3: got five dingers now if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, so
- 5:21Speaker 3: I think he's tied for the league league. Talk about
- 5:24Speaker 3: those two guys and how JJ's transitioned to the big leagues,
- 5:29Speaker 3: and we saw Jordan's transition to the big leagues when
- 5:31Speaker 3: he was like nine years old seventeen years ago, and
- 5:35Speaker 3: now he's twenty three and we're like, wait a minute,
- 5:37Speaker 3: that how is this going on?
- 5:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll start with I'll start with Walker.
- 5:43Speaker 2: You know, he when he debuted, like he had a
- 5:48Speaker 2: really pretty good debut year, and then I think you
- 5:52Speaker 2: realized he needed to make some adjustments and because the
- 5:54Speaker 2: league was adjusting to him, and you know, I don't
- 5:58Speaker 2: know if he didn't make the right adjustments or he
- 6:01Speaker 2: made the wrong adjustments, whatever it was, he just didn't
- 6:04Speaker 2: look comfortable. But now, like you said, he's got five homers.
- 6:07Speaker 2: He looks like he's you know, on another planet. But
- 6:10Speaker 2: the biggest thing for.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Me with Jay Walk is, uh, you know, I've.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Noticed a maturity level from him that he's just gotten
- 6:19Speaker 2: so much better at it.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Where you know, his first two at bats he made
- 6:22Speaker 4: punch out. I saw the other day his.
- 6:23Speaker 2: First two at bats weren't great. You know, he didn't
- 6:26Speaker 2: he didn't look great in the box, but he didn't
- 6:29Speaker 2: let those affect his third at bat. And you know,
- 6:31Speaker 2: I think in years prior you would have seen a
- 6:32Speaker 2: little a little bit different from that.
- 6:34Speaker 4: But I mean he's, you know, he's doing his thing.
- 6:37Speaker 2: He's uh, you know, obviously swing swinging the bat really well,
- 6:40Speaker 2: and you know, looking forward to seeing what he could
- 6:43Speaker 2: do for a full year. And then JJ, yeah, he's
- 6:48Speaker 2: very very slow, heartbeat. You know, the game never looked
- 6:55Speaker 2: too fast for him. His defense has been incredible. It's
- 6:57Speaker 2: been a lot of fun being on that right side
- 6:59Speaker 2: of the endfield with him. And then, uh, you know,
- 7:02Speaker 2: I can see the way obviously he's leading off for us,
- 7:04Speaker 2: and it's he's a good he's a good tool for
- 7:08Speaker 2: me to use to see how guys are, how guys
- 7:10Speaker 2: are attacking lefties that day. So and then you know,
- 7:15Speaker 2: they bringing a lefty in the bullpen for him and
- 7:17Speaker 2: me at the top, and so I kind of use
- 7:19Speaker 2: him as a little little bait to see what they're
- 7:21Speaker 2: gonna do.
- 7:22Speaker 4: But no, he's good.
- 7:24Speaker 2: He's uh, you know, very mature for his age, and
- 7:28Speaker 2: he's uh, you know, he's going to do a lot
- 7:30Speaker 2: of special things in Saint Louis and you know, hopefully,
- 7:32Speaker 2: hopefully I'm around to see that.

- 8:35Speaker 9: Wait, Alec, now you're you're the vet.
- 8:38Speaker 3: The words you say you're the vet. You got like
- 8:39Speaker 3: three plus years, so you're the vet in this lineup
- 8:42Speaker 3: right before you came on.
- 8:43Speaker 9: I don't know if you heard what we were.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Talking about about how like some people treat rookies like trash,
- 8:49Speaker 3: and I think there's a fine line there and you
- 8:53Speaker 3: need to be on the field with these dudes. You
- 8:55Speaker 3: just start talking about how JJ weatherhol is, you know,
- 8:58Speaker 3: he's so mature beyond his years. You still get on
- 9:02Speaker 3: them a little bit though, right, Like there's something that
- 9:04Speaker 3: like he's pretty jack Like does he not wear enough shirts?
- 9:07Speaker 3: Does he like not eat enough cheeseburgers? Like you still
- 9:10Speaker 3: need to get on a rookie correct or is the
- 9:12Speaker 3: cardinal way?
- 9:14Speaker 5: No?
- 9:14Speaker 9: Everybody, peace, love and harmony.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Bro.
- 9:17Speaker 4: No, I'll get on anybody. I don't care who you are.
- 9:22Speaker 2: No, there's definitely you, you know with the rookie stuff
- 9:25Speaker 2: where you got to sing on the bus and all
- 9:26Speaker 2: that stuff. That was definitely definitely done. And you know,
- 9:31Speaker 2: I'm sure that video you saw the video of us
- 9:33Speaker 2: put him in the cart for all of his first
- 9:35Speaker 2: that he did in two games, which was you know crazy.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Took me a few weeks to get my first. But yeah,
- 9:42Speaker 2: there's definitely a fine line where, like you said, you
- 9:45Speaker 2: have to compete with these guys and you have to
- 9:47Speaker 2: be able to to you know, communicate throughout a game.
- 9:51Speaker 2: But on the other hand, some guys do it to
- 9:54Speaker 2: themselves and they make it a lot more easy for
- 9:59Speaker 2: us to you know, get on them or or you know,
- 10:02Speaker 2: play with them, joke with them, whatever.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Maybe they bring it on themselves.
- 10:06Speaker 2: So I won't name any names, but uh, there's a
- 10:09Speaker 2: few guys that they just kind of do it to themselves.
- 10:11Speaker 4: But yeah, jj JJ is tough.
- 10:14Speaker 2: To He's tough to crack, so we'll I'm still working
- 10:17Speaker 2: on them.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Wait, so there's rookies that that bring it on themselves
- 10:21Speaker 3: because of the things that they do.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, no no names or anything, but you know,
- 10:29Speaker 2: you've seen those rookies that you know they say some
- 10:33Speaker 2: things or you know, do some things that you're just like,
- 10:37Speaker 2: what are you doing? And uh, you give them crap
- 10:40Speaker 2: for it. So yeah, no no names. Maybe off camera
- 10:45Speaker 2: we could talk about it, but uh, it's it's it's
- 10:49Speaker 2: tough with when you have a team full of rookies too, right,
- 10:51Speaker 2: you gotta you gotta be able to manage that stuff
- 10:54Speaker 2: along with trying to show them the way of you know,
- 10:58Speaker 2: being a big leader in what that looks like. So
- 11:00Speaker 2: definitely a fine line. But this team's this, this team's
- 11:04Speaker 2: got it for sure.
- 11:05Speaker 9: I love it.
- 11:06Speaker 6: I'm gonna put you on the spot here a little
- 11:07Speaker 6: bit again here Wilson contrarash your old teammate, man, You
- 11:10Speaker 6: see how mad he got getting hit by a pitch.
- 11:13Speaker 6: I'm putting out a little threat there, a little action,
- 11:16Speaker 6: just trying to figure out what side you're on on
- 11:18Speaker 6: this little situation, and you know who's in the wrong.
- 11:22Speaker 6: I haven't talked to any other players about it, so
- 11:25Speaker 6: I want to get your take on the whole thing.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I mean, I love Wilson. I love Wilson, so probably
- 11:34Speaker 2: on this side. If if it's true that he's been
- 11:36Speaker 2: hit twenty four or twenty five, whatever the.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Number was, If that's a truth, if that's a true.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Statement, you know, I'm not for taking guys out or
- 11:44Speaker 2: whatever he said, but uh, you know, he's one of
- 11:48Speaker 2: my guys.
- 11:48Speaker 4: Obviously, spent a lot of time with him at first base.
- 11:51Speaker 2: He was asking me questions about first base, so you know,
- 11:55Speaker 2: we spent a lot of time together, and so he's
- 11:58Speaker 2: definitely one of my guys. And so yeah, you know
- 12:02Speaker 2: when he was obviously we're playing him, playing him this
- 12:05Speaker 2: uh this weekend so uh, you know, hopefully he doesn't.
- 12:08Speaker 4: Try to do anything too crazy. Hopefully we uh with
- 12:13Speaker 4: him a little bit, stay stay down on the zone
- 12:15Speaker 4: from him.
- 12:15Speaker 2: But uh, yeah, it's if you've been hit twenty four
- 12:19Speaker 2: or twenty five, whatever the number is, if you've been
- 12:20Speaker 2: hit that many times, then then there's there's some kind
- 12:23Speaker 2: of issue.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Wait wait, wait, oh, you are playing him right now,
- 12:27Speaker 3: and you said it like you gotta throw Wilson up
- 12:30Speaker 3: and in. You gotta like the heat map, don't lie.
- 12:33Speaker 3: You can't let Wilson. Hey, if you're gonna let Wilson
- 12:37Speaker 3: Contreras lean out over the plate, Cardinals are gonna be
- 12:40Speaker 3: playing from behind, I'm just you. You've seen it, and
- 12:43Speaker 3: so you have to throw him in. But to me,
- 12:47Speaker 3: as a ex teammate of his, if he charges them
- 12:50Speaker 3: out and trying to think of some new pitch, dustin May,
- 12:53Speaker 3: let's one run up and in. He wasn't there last
- 12:55Speaker 3: year so they don't know each other. Yeah, and Wilson
- 12:58Speaker 3: starts chirping, are you gonna get are you going to
- 13:00Speaker 3: get in the way or you a little scot.
- 13:02Speaker 2: I'll just that'll be part of the rookie. I'll just
- 13:05Speaker 2: throw JJ in front of him and let JJ fin
- 13:07Speaker 2: for himself. So that'll that'll be his welcome to the
- 13:10Speaker 2: big leagues. We'll just throw throw JJ in front of
- 13:12Speaker 2: him and see what happens.
- 13:15Speaker 3: I think Wilson's like a mongoose or something. I think
- 13:17Speaker 3: he's just gonna like I don't know, he would go
- 13:19Speaker 3: he would go crazy. My last question for you, you
- 13:23Speaker 3: are a two way player in college show Hay and
- 13:27Speaker 3: what he's doing. I want you to comment on what
- 13:30Speaker 3: show Hay does. But I also we talked about it
- 13:33Speaker 3: yesterday about how Major Baseball kind of made the show
- 13:37Speaker 3: Hay rule and it kind of makes it unfair for
- 13:40Speaker 3: Alec Burlson to become a two way player in the
- 13:44Speaker 3: big leagues because you would be you would need to
- 13:47Speaker 3: have whatever thirty innings in to be able to qualify
- 13:50Speaker 3: for the show Hey rule. So do you feel like
- 13:52Speaker 3: that's something that a you could have handled being a
- 13:56Speaker 3: two way player in the big leagues be do you
- 13:59Speaker 3: think it's fair that Majorleague Baseball made it basically just
- 14:02Speaker 3: only for show Hay.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Well, Number one, No, I cannot be a two way
- 14:08Speaker 4: in the big leagues. I could hardly. I could hardly
- 14:10Speaker 4: do in college.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Uh, you know, I threw my eighty nine mile r
- 14:15Speaker 2: fastball down the middle and said here, try and hit it,
- 14:18Speaker 2: and you know, had a couple of speed pitches with that,
- 14:21Speaker 2: but it wasn't great.
- 14:22Speaker 4: Uh you know, I got outs.
- 14:23Speaker 2: But no, definitely could not do that in the big
- 14:25Speaker 2: leagues with playing one hundred and sixty two games and
- 14:28Speaker 2: then you know, definitely couldn't start. If guy's game plan
- 14:32Speaker 2: for me, it would not be good. So no, I
- 14:35Speaker 2: cannot do that. But you know, it's it's been said
- 14:39Speaker 2: so many times, but what he does is so impressive. Uh,
- 14:42Speaker 2: just not from a production standpoint, not from a you know,
- 14:48Speaker 2: how many homers he hits and spaces he steals and
- 14:51Speaker 2: strikeouts he has. This it's more of just the wear
- 14:53Speaker 2: and tear on the body and how he is able
- 14:56Speaker 2: to post every single day, just from being from the inside,
- 15:03Speaker 2: you know, obviously being a big leaguer like that's probably
- 15:07Speaker 2: the hardest part of it, not the production aspect of it.
- 15:09Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean I've tried to vouch for you know,
- 15:16Speaker 2: thirty innings or whatever that rule is and see if
- 15:18Speaker 2: I can be a two way guy next year, and uh, but.
- 15:21Speaker 4: I don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon.
- 15:23Speaker 2: But it's it's just too it's just too hard to
- 15:26Speaker 2: do what he does, so like, yeah, that he the
- 15:29Speaker 2: rule is for show hey, obviously, and I just think
- 15:32Speaker 2: it's too hard to do that in the big leagues
- 15:35Speaker 2: effectively and productively. Like, I just think it's too hard.
- 15:39Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm fine with the show Hay rule or
- 15:41Speaker 2: whatever you want.
- 15:42Speaker 8: To call it.
- 15:45Speaker 1: There you go. We figured we'd find someone with some
- 15:47Speaker 1: real world pological experience.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Yep, it's it's way too hard. It's way too hard.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I felt every day in college, I felt like my
- 15:57Speaker 2: body was going to fall apart. So could imagine doing
- 16:00Speaker 2: it every single day?
- 16:02Speaker 3: You're like the poor man's Jack Caglione. Then okay, so
- 16:06Speaker 3: we're gonna leave it at that, and that's what it is,
- 16:09Speaker 3: you and Jack. Like we could put a graphic up
- 16:11Speaker 3: like Jack Kglione Alec Burlson.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Yeah, no, probably not the same category, same, not the
- 16:20Speaker 2: same same, same, same but different, same but different Okay, different.
- 16:28Speaker 1: There you go, same but different exactly. Well still even
- 16:31Speaker 1: to get that far doing both, yeah, and to get
- 16:33Speaker 1: that perspective that it's crazy, right, not many even doing
- 16:36Speaker 1: it like you were doing back then, in college. But yeah,
- 16:38Speaker 1: stick stick to hitting. We're liking what we're seeing out
- 16:40Speaker 1: there and Cardinals are looking good. It's been fun to
- 16:43Speaker 1: follow so far. Here for the team at seven and five, Alex,
- 16:46Speaker 1: thanks for joining us man always really appreciate it and
- 16:49Speaker 1: love the combos.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Good luck this weekend of course, thanks guys.
- 16:53Speaker 10: Brad Paisley joining the show today, Brad, thank you so
- 16:56Speaker 10: much for being a part.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Of the show day.
- 17:01Speaker 8: Thrilled to be here. This is my favorite thing to
- 17:05Speaker 8: talk about right now.
- 17:06Speaker 10: Yes, the Dodgers. I know that you're a huge fan.
- 17:08Speaker 10: Before we get into your fandom and how that came about,
- 17:12Speaker 10: I want to talk to you about something that is
- 17:14Speaker 10: super cool. I saw when you gave Mooky Bets the
- 17:17Speaker 10: Dodgers shortstop, a fender that you presented to him, and
- 17:21Speaker 10: John Suhu, the team photographer, wanted me to tell you,
- 17:23Speaker 10: Brad that Mooky has been practicing on your fender a ton.
- 17:27Speaker 4: How did this come about?
- 17:28Speaker 10: How did you find out Mouke was learning the guitar
- 17:31Speaker 10: and what made you want to do this?
- 17:34Speaker 8: Well, I mean it's well known he's practicing the guitar,
- 17:38Speaker 8: and first of all, I find that offensive, but he's
- 17:44Speaker 8: because he's too good at everything. And I figured, you know,
- 17:48Speaker 8: it was something where I saw that he had a
- 17:51Speaker 8: certain guitar and I.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Thought, you know what I should give him.
- 17:53Speaker 8: That's one of my Fender models they make, and I
- 17:57Speaker 8: was like, we should give him one of these. And
- 17:59Speaker 8: I actually reached out to his people and just said,
- 18:03Speaker 8: does he want an electric to learn on? And they
- 18:08Speaker 8: they said immediately yes. But what's weird is when I
- 18:10Speaker 8: handed it to him, he winced, like you maybe hurt
- 18:15Speaker 8: his back. I don't think it was me. They keep
- 18:24Speaker 8: talking about him going around the bases and maybe heard something,
- 18:26Speaker 8: but now I saw him WinCE when I handed him
- 18:28Speaker 8: that guitar.
- 18:30Speaker 9: Yeah, you know what I was wondering.
- 18:32Speaker 7: I mean, obviously with where you're at there, it's a
- 18:34Speaker 7: guitar or a guitar where you.
- 18:36Speaker 8: At in that range, uh, guitar.
- 18:42Speaker 9: I just want to make sure. I want to make sure.
- 18:44Speaker 9: Have you heard him play at all? Mookie play at all?
- 18:47Speaker 5: No?
- 18:47Speaker 1: I haven't.
- 18:49Speaker 8: I handed it to him on the field and we
- 18:51Speaker 8: didn't stop the game or anything, so I haven't heard him.
- 18:54Speaker 8: Though I anxiously await his debut. It could go either way, folks.
- 19:00Speaker 8: He's really good at what he tackles. As you know, Alana,
- 19:03Speaker 8: I mean you've seen him. It's like the guy just
- 19:07Speaker 8: dives in. But that this is a different animal. I
- 19:10Speaker 8: mean it could be, it could be, you know, wonderful,
- 19:14Speaker 8: and it also could be I want that back, Brat.
- 19:24Speaker 11: I so I'm heston to admit this to our live audience.
- 19:26Speaker 11: I don't even think Alana and Clint know. But back
- 19:29Speaker 11: in my prime, my college days, I actually say in
- 19:31Speaker 11: the national anthem for a couple of spring training games. Now,
- 19:35Speaker 11: the difference between yours and mine is that yours were
- 19:37Speaker 11: actually great, mine.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Not so much, and mine at that Mine don't.
- 19:42Speaker 11: Go eighteen innans. Yours tend to you tend to give
- 19:45Speaker 11: us a little bit of free baseball. Are you aware
- 19:47Speaker 11: of the effect that you have, especially in the postseason,
- 19:50Speaker 11: with your performances.
- 19:53Speaker 8: Yeah, it's pretty it's pretty fun. Actually, it's a great
- 19:56Speaker 8: it's a great stat in the sense that we usually win.
- 20:00Speaker 8: So I'm good with that. But like the it's a
- 20:04Speaker 8: very strange. You almost couldn't you couldn't plan for it.
- 20:09Speaker 8: I mean, it's the type of thing that I don't
- 20:11Speaker 8: think it'll probably ever happen again. No one's gonna have
- 20:14Speaker 8: I don't think anybody's gonna have the anthem at to
- 20:17Speaker 8: the two longest games in World Series history to eighteen
- 20:20Speaker 8: inning games, in addition to the one just as memorable,
- 20:25Speaker 8: maybe more more memorable, honestly, was Game one against the
- 20:29Speaker 8: Yankees with Freddy's walk off Grand Slam. So having sung
- 20:35Speaker 8: for all those, it's a wild feeling. It's like in
- 20:39Speaker 8: the middle of the in the middle of Game three
- 20:43Speaker 8: in the last World Series, I just kept thinking, no
- 20:46Speaker 8: way when it got to the tenth and then the eleventh,
- 20:50Speaker 8: and at that point I thought, well, this is really wild,
- 20:53Speaker 8: my and this is what I thought. I thought my
- 20:55Speaker 8: last couple World Series went extras, including the longest ever.
- 21:00Speaker 8: By the time we got to the eighteenth I.
- 21:02Speaker 4: Was like, this is insane.
- 21:03Speaker 1: This is it.
- 21:04Speaker 8: And I remember when they said around the fourteenth inning,
- 21:08Speaker 8: They're like, well, this is officially the second longest World
- 21:11Speaker 8: Series in history, World Series game in history, and I thought, well,
- 21:15Speaker 8: I sang it the other one, and then the next thing,
- 21:17Speaker 8: you know, it goes eighteen. I don't really and then
- 21:21Speaker 8: I ran into all these people. You know, it was
- 21:22Speaker 8: a fun stat that got talked about. It's a hard
- 21:26Speaker 8: thing to end up in some sort of Baseball trivia
- 21:29Speaker 8: book without actually ever having played. But it's brad fun.
- 21:35Speaker 10: You are such a fan of the team, but certainly
- 21:37Speaker 10: the fan of the players too personally. And I know
- 21:40Speaker 10: you have a great relationship with Clayton and Ellen Kershaw.
- 21:43Speaker 10: How odd was it or is it for you to
- 21:45Speaker 10: not see Kersh wearing a uniform and just seeing him
- 21:49Speaker 10: kind of hanging out and enjoying it in a different way.
- 21:52Speaker 10: I know, during the ring ceremony you got to hang
- 21:54Speaker 10: out with him a little bit and watch the game
- 21:56Speaker 10: with Kersh with a different perspective.
- 22:00Speaker 8: It was unbelievable.
- 22:02Speaker 5: It was so surreal to see him gallop onto the field.
- 22:08Speaker 8: They did it really cool.
- 22:09Speaker 4: They had Oral.
- 22:11Speaker 8: Pretend to throw out the first pitch and then act
- 22:14Speaker 8: like he hurt his arm, and Doc came out and
- 22:17Speaker 8: motioned to the bullpen or whatever, and now pitching and
- 22:20Speaker 8: relief please welcome, you know, and they've started tonight.
- 22:26Speaker 6: We're young.
- 22:27Speaker 8: As he ran out and you know, and here he
- 22:31Speaker 8: wore a jersey one last time and he ran out
- 22:32Speaker 8: there and his wild you know, it was the feeling
- 22:37Speaker 8: of a new era, like in that moment, more than
- 22:42Speaker 8: anything that I have sort of felt like and he
- 22:50Speaker 8: was so he's so as you know, he's the most
- 22:53Speaker 8: down to earth human being you'll ever meet. And he's
- 22:55Speaker 8: so at peace with it and grounded with it, I think,
- 23:00Speaker 8: and he like, I know, it had to be weird
- 23:02Speaker 8: for him, but he just kept kind of grinning. And
- 23:05Speaker 8: even we went to uh we went up and watched
- 23:08Speaker 8: from a suite and that was something I will cherish
- 23:12Speaker 8: for the rest of my life, is getting to watch.
- 23:14Speaker 8: I asked him, I said, have you ever been to
- 23:18Speaker 8: a Major League Baseball game before without you know, riding
- 23:24Speaker 8: the bus in through the tunnel? And he said it
- 23:29Speaker 8: had been a while, you know, probably since he was
- 23:32Speaker 8: a kid or something. I think he said he might
- 23:34Speaker 8: have gone to like a Detroit Tigers World Series game
- 23:36Speaker 8: early on, but he hasn't. He had never been to
- 23:39Speaker 8: a Dodger game other than you know, as an as
- 23:43Speaker 8: a member of the team. So it was really really neat.
- 23:48Speaker 5: And he walked out in the in the suite area
- 23:51Speaker 5: and I looked at the field and it's just.
- 23:53Speaker 8: That vibe and he just went, oh, I see why
- 23:57Speaker 8: people do this. It was really it was really magical
- 24:02Speaker 8: to see him, you know, experience honestly, the house he
- 24:08Speaker 8: helped build right.
- 24:11Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, I mean it's got to be kind
- 24:15Speaker 7: of surreal for you being such a massive fan, but
- 24:17Speaker 7: also having such a tight relationship with Clayton. Obviously, you
- 24:21Speaker 7: guys have been involved in each other's charities in different ways.
- 24:25Speaker 7: I was at this this ping pong event there in
- 24:28Speaker 7: twenty nineteen, great one that was put on the suit.
- 24:31Speaker 9: He brought it out, he brought he brought out the
- 24:35Speaker 9: best he could.
- 24:36Speaker 7: To also play a little bit of ping pong for
- 24:38Speaker 7: you know, ping pong for a purpose.
- 24:40Speaker 9: Brian Cranson was there. But yeah, what's that kind of
- 24:42Speaker 9: like having such a.
- 24:43Speaker 7: Close relationship with somebody you also to a degree, you
- 24:47Speaker 7: know you're watching them, You're kind of idolize these players
- 24:49Speaker 7: on the field, and you know they make you happy,
- 24:51Speaker 7: they make you mad, they make you sad.
- 24:53Speaker 9: What's that like?
- 24:55Speaker 5: It's the most it's such a pleasant surprise to see
- 24:59Speaker 5: that he's a better person than he is a picture
- 25:04Speaker 5: I was, you know, I mean we're talking like the
- 25:07Speaker 5: best picture of our generation, and yet he's an even
- 25:09Speaker 5: better person.
- 25:12Speaker 8: You know, I didn't know he'd be this cool when
- 25:17Speaker 8: I became friends with and you know, I've we Kim
- 25:21Speaker 8: and I have said all along we model how we
- 25:25Speaker 8: sort of utilize success to make the world a better
- 25:30Speaker 8: place based on Clayton and Ellen. There's nobody that does more,
- 25:34Speaker 8: I think with what they've been given than those two.
- 25:38Speaker 8: It's a pretty inspiring thing to watch in spite of juggling,
- 25:43Speaker 8: you know, and half a baseball team of children, you know, honestly,
- 25:52Speaker 8: and then also finding time to like raise money for
- 25:56Speaker 8: these causes that they're always championing. I think also there
- 26:03Speaker 8: was an article I saw recently that kind of summed
- 26:05Speaker 8: it up that the heart of the Dodgers and the
- 26:09Speaker 8: giving nature of it and the way the team, the leadership, hierarchy,
- 26:13Speaker 8: and the class that I think the team at its
- 26:17Speaker 8: best personifies comes from Clayton, which was sort of the
- 26:22Speaker 8: top down I mean he as far as the players go, like,
- 26:24Speaker 8: he set the tone in terms of he always had
- 26:27Speaker 8: the ping pong avan. He always made sure that players
- 26:30Speaker 8: knew they needed to do charity things. It's no I
- 26:34Speaker 8: think it's no coincidence that somebody like Chris Taylor has
- 26:36Speaker 8: his polar Bear type challenge that he does and Will
- 26:40Speaker 8: Smith's now doing comedy. Mookie's got his stuff. Although Mookie
- 26:48Speaker 8: probably would have done it anyway. But it's like, but
- 26:50Speaker 8: it's wild to see. I think the effect he had
- 26:53Speaker 8: on the team in every way.
- 26:56Speaker 12: You know you can you can contribute, or you can
- 26:58Speaker 12: attribute his contribution to to the to the success they've
- 27:03Speaker 12: had in a giving sense, you know.
- 27:06Speaker 7: The giving keeps happening. When you're talking about twenty two.
- 27:09Speaker 7: Another event you were involved with was Casey Live and
- 27:12Speaker 7: there was a couple of years ago where Clayton graced
- 27:15Speaker 7: us all.
- 27:16Speaker 9: Maybe it's not as good as Katie Woo's national anthem, but.
- 27:18Speaker 7: He graced us with his voice on stage with you.
- 27:21Speaker 7: I'm gonna play the clip and maybe it's been a
- 27:23Speaker 7: little while since you've seen it, but I need you
- 27:26Speaker 7: to grade him. Here, guys, here's the future Hall of
- 27:28Speaker 7: Famer Clayton Edward Kershaw singing with legendary country music musician
- 27:32Speaker 7: Brad Paisley.
- 27:34Speaker 4: See guy, earl you wow O. Sounds crazy? Alright to
- 27:43Speaker 4: give it in.
- 27:44Speaker 12: A world.
- 27:48Speaker 7: No notes, no notes? That's that's beautiful notes boom, that's
- 27:57Speaker 7: pretty good.
- 27:59Speaker 5: Now.
- 28:00Speaker 8: Yeah, there were were not in any danger of him.
- 28:02Speaker 8: You know, he's a Hall of Famer, but not in
- 28:03Speaker 8: the country.
- 28:05Speaker 7: What's what's that show where you push the button the
- 28:07Speaker 7: chair turns around. You're not pushing the button and calling
- 28:10Speaker 7: him on the voice, Yeah, the voice, there you go.
- 28:14Speaker 8: Sorry, he's he is such a he's such a good
- 28:19Speaker 8: good sport though a lot of a lot of players
- 28:22Speaker 8: are sort of a little too cool for school and
- 28:23Speaker 8: they would never get up and goof around like that.
- 28:25Speaker 8: So yeah, it's it's it's a fun, it's a really
- 28:30Speaker 8: it's really neat friendship. And it's interesting now, you know what.
- 28:33Speaker 8: It's his playful nature with you know, he's Andrew Friedman
- 28:37Speaker 8: has him as a special assistant now. And he got
- 28:39Speaker 8: a badge that is his like employee badge, you know,
- 28:45Speaker 8: alta you have one, and it's and he wore it
- 28:48Speaker 8: around the stadium the whole day like on his belt.
- 28:54Speaker 8: Like anyone's gonna ever stop him from walking in there.
- 28:58Speaker 8: But you have I have a feeling every time you
- 28:59Speaker 8: go there, he'll he'll show his badge.
- 29:02Speaker 7: He's job, I'm supposed to be here.
- 29:05Speaker 9: I promise it's corporate.
- 29:06Speaker 8: Yeah, exactly. Meanwhile, he'd be walking past a statue of
- 29:09Speaker 8: himself with his badge.
- 29:14Speaker 1: That will be the.
- 29:15Speaker 8: Next Yep, he's a rule follower, exactly.
- 29:21Speaker 11: There's nothing wrong with that, No, no, Brad. Let's let's
- 29:24Speaker 11: take it back a little bit to the twenty twenty
- 29:26Speaker 11: three Winter meetings. They were in Nashville, and I believe
- 29:28Speaker 11: you actually hosted the MLB Draft Lottery also, and then
- 29:32Speaker 11: you were kind of post the Dodgers at your house.
- 29:36Speaker 11: We saw some Dave Roberts action friend of the show,
- 29:39Speaker 11: Dave Massey.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Look at that guy, look at that smile.
- 29:41Speaker 8: Oh good lord, that David made the cut today.
- 29:47Speaker 11: He made the cut, made the cut. But I'm curious
- 29:51Speaker 11: to know because some some Dodger Laura might have gone
- 29:54Speaker 11: down that night. What was your take and your experience
- 29:57Speaker 11: watching this Tyler Glass now trade come to fruition.
- 30:00Speaker 8: It was one of the most fun things I've ever done,
- 30:02Speaker 8: I really, as far as like, first of all, hosting
- 30:06Speaker 8: Dave and Andrew. And when I say Dave, I mean
- 30:10Speaker 8: Dave Roberts, not David ns No, but hosting all these guys.
- 30:18Speaker 8: They are amazing and they just had the day they
- 30:22Speaker 8: walked in this house. I was waiting with really expensive
- 30:28Speaker 8: whiskey for them because Dave had stuck his foot in
- 30:33Speaker 8: his mouth that day. Well not really, but he made
- 30:37Speaker 8: the mistake of being honest with the media and said
- 30:41Speaker 8: and basically was like, yes, we've talked with showhey. And
- 30:46Speaker 8: so everybody thought he blew the deal if they were
- 30:48Speaker 8: going to have one because they were supposed to not
- 30:50Speaker 8: talk about it or something. And so next thing you know,
- 30:53Speaker 8: it was Defcon five and everybody was having emergency meetings
- 30:56Speaker 8: and when they came down, they had just been sitting
- 30:59Speaker 8: and talking about like, Okay, did we hurt anything? Did
- 31:02Speaker 8: you mess up? And it's great because they I got
- 31:07Speaker 8: to let them unwind and they got to kind of
- 31:10Speaker 8: like when when Doc walked in, I handed him a
- 31:13Speaker 8: glass of Pappy Van Winkle and was like, I think
- 31:15Speaker 8: you need this, and he said I need more than
- 31:17Speaker 8: one of them of these bees. And the next thing
- 31:21Speaker 8: you know, Andrew came up and said, are you a
- 31:26Speaker 8: Tyler glassnew fan. I've been trying to get that deal done.
- 31:30Speaker 8: He said here, say hi, and he put Eric Neander
- 31:32Speaker 8: on the phone. He said, say i'd Eric Neander and
- 31:34Speaker 8: I said, he Eric, you're with the wrong team or
- 31:36Speaker 8: you could be here and and then he said, well, man,
- 31:40Speaker 8: I wish I could. And then he got on there
- 31:41Speaker 8: with Andrew and he said that sounds like Brad Paisley.
- 31:46Speaker 8: That's a good impression. And Andrew said, no, we're really
- 31:49Speaker 8: at his house having he's got a bar and we're
- 31:51Speaker 8: all hanging out. And I said, and then he came
- 31:54Speaker 8: to me and he said, were you serious about him
- 31:56Speaker 8: coming down here? Because I was like, y'all should come
- 31:59Speaker 8: down And I said, will it help? And he said
- 32:01Speaker 8: I think it might, and I said, yeah, send him down.
- 32:05Speaker 8: Next thing, you know, eight Tampa Bay Rays front office
- 32:07Speaker 8: people walk in, so we've already got about thirty Dodgers.
- 32:11Speaker 8: There's eight Rays. They stayed till four in the morning
- 32:16Speaker 8: and called an uber. One of the front office people
- 32:20Speaker 8: with one of the team's face planted in the front
- 32:22Speaker 8: yard on the way to the uber not kidding, had
- 32:29Speaker 8: grass stains on their face. When they got back to
- 32:31Speaker 8: the hotel at five in the morning, and yeah, and
- 32:36Speaker 8: this is all this is all true. And I watched
- 32:39Speaker 8: as him and Andrew sort of like when Eric walked in.
- 32:42Speaker 8: It was about eleven o'clock when Eric came in, and
- 32:46Speaker 8: here's the GM of the Rays and he sits down
- 32:48Speaker 8: at the bar and he's like, what do you got?
- 32:50Speaker 8: And I said, well, this whole top shelf's the most
- 32:52Speaker 8: expensive stuff, and you don't get that till Tyler Glassnell's
- 32:56Speaker 8: a Dodger and he's like say, all right, well fine,
- 33:00Speaker 8: I'll just deal with you. What do you think of
- 33:02Speaker 8: so and so? And I'm like, that'd be a great
- 33:04Speaker 8: ray and then and that's really how it was going.
- 33:11Speaker 8: And then the next thing you know, he disappears into
- 33:12Speaker 8: the next room with Andrew and they sort of talked
- 33:14Speaker 8: for a while and came back and and when they left,
- 33:18Speaker 8: I asked Andrews, so what do you think? He said,
- 33:19Speaker 8: I think it's probably that's looking good. I'll let you know.
- 33:23Speaker 8: And then a couple of days later he wrote me
- 33:24Speaker 8: you get the assist, which was really fun. I mean,
- 33:27Speaker 8: but it is what you what you hope. Like when
- 33:31Speaker 8: when I think of baseball movies or any of these things,
- 33:35Speaker 8: I think of guys at a bar, you know, piano
- 33:39Speaker 8: music in the background and they write some stuff down
- 33:43Speaker 8: on a napkin and they're like, what do you think
