- 0:00Welcome to Loud and Lifted Quick Lift, the snack
- 0:02size episode where we turn insight into action
- 0:05before your latte even coals. I'm your host,
- 0:07Betsy Hamm. Today, we're highlighting power moves
- 0:10from image strategist Melanie Litman. So your
- 0:13outfit reads leader before you even say a word.
- 0:16She shares a practical playbook for women in
- 0:18leadership to build an authentic magnetic executive
- 0:21presence in real life and on camera by using
- 0:25style as a strategic brand tool. Let's get into
- 0:28it. Key takeaway number one, brand before closet.
- 0:40Now, we have talked about this countless times,
- 0:42starting with Linda's episode about the importance
- 0:44of building your brand. And Linda challenged
- 0:46us to ask our peers or our coworkers five words
- 0:49to describe us. Well, Melanie continued down
- 0:52this path where she said, pick three words that
- 0:55you want to describe you as a leader, and then
- 0:57you're going to start building your closet or
- 0:59your look around that. And I love how she said
- 1:02the first thing she does when she works with
- 1:03women is discuss what their values are and what
- 1:05they want to be known for, because your clothes
- 1:08are sending a message. whether you like it or
- 1:10not, and it's even before we realize it. She
- 1:13mentioned a study that was just done by Princeton
- 1:15that people make a first impression in one tenth
- 1:18of a second. Now what's crazy is she mentioned
- 1:21that years ago when she started doing image coaching,
- 1:24it was 10 seconds. Which, you know, seems still
- 1:27fairly quickly. But thanks to social media and
- 1:30our desires who scroll and quickly make opinions,
- 1:33that's come down to one tenth of a second. Someone's
- 1:35making an opinion of you. By the way, you're
- 1:38showing up. And the reality is, is that we have
- 1:41to use our clothes as a tool to amplify the brand
- 1:44that we want to be. And if we don't, someone's
- 1:47going to create it for us. So she said, start
- 1:49with this. You're going to think of those three
- 1:51brand words that you want to describe you as
- 1:53a leader and what you want to be known for. or
- 1:55in the workplace. And then you're going to translate
- 1:58each one of those into visible cues. So an example
- 2:01would be, if you want to be decisive, you want
- 2:03people to think that you're decisive when they
- 2:05see you, then maybe it's crisp lines, structured
- 2:08shoulders, minimal hardware. If you want to be
- 2:11warm, maybe it's saturated jewel tones, soft
- 2:13textures, curved necklines. Now, I know thinking
- 2:16through this, you're like, how am I supposed
- 2:18to know? And this is where it's great to get
- 2:20help, whether somebody like Melanie or even shopping
- 2:22at a local boutique. that feedback from somebody
- 2:25who is an expert in this honestly I think is
- 2:28a great opinion. So that was our first part of
- 2:31this is defining those three brand words that
- 2:32we want to be known for and then start translating
- 2:35those to visible cues and then we're going to
- 2:38go to our closet. So the takeaway for number
- 2:40one here is brand first your personal brand and
- 2:43closet second. The second key takeaway was color
- 2:47creates connection. I love this one because I
- 2:50have 100 % been guilty of this in the past. And
- 2:52as I mentioned in the episode, our friend Margaret
- 2:55of Three Little Birds called me out on this a
- 2:57while ago. Wearing all black isn't really the
- 3:00best professional move. And many of us do it.
- 3:02I have certainly done it because we think it's
- 3:04easy. We think it just sort of helps us blend
- 3:05in. It doesn't really make anything stick out.
- 3:07But Melanie made a great point. There's a reason
- 3:10why there's black tie weddings. There's a reason
- 3:13why judges wear black. Judges wear black because
- 3:15they're supposed to not have an opinion. Black
- 3:17tie weddings are because you're supposed to be
- 3:18on your best behavior and kind of just fall into
- 3:21the shadows versus being as part of the wedding
- 3:24party. So black puts up walls and color creates
- 3:28connection. And I think that's such a great point.
- 3:31We all have to get, a lot of us have to get more
- 3:33comfortable wearing color. So Melanie talked
- 3:36about finding the colors that are right for you.
- 3:38Of course, I think we all have that time where
- 3:40we know a certain color looks good on us or if
- 3:42we have it on, we'll get compliments of that
- 3:45color looks good on you or you just, you can
- 3:46tell when you see pictures. So choose that power
- 3:49palette, two colors or more. Maybe it's a neutral
- 3:52and some accent colors that you know you look
- 3:54good in and you feel good in. And of course,
- 3:57you can even test this on camera. Get your iPhone
- 3:59out. Get your laptop out on a Zoom meeting and
- 4:02just see as you're looking at yourself in those
- 4:05colors what you feel. Does it make your eyes
- 4:07pop? Does it look good with your hair? Or does
- 4:09it drain you? And guess what? Block doesn't make
- 4:11you look good as much as we all would love to
- 4:13think that it does. So again, here is a huge
- 4:16opportunity. If you need some help, ask a friend,
- 4:18go to your local boutique. But it is something
- 4:21that I think is very easy to do. And honestly,
- 4:23most of us know what colors we look good in.
- 4:25So let's embrace that. Key takeaway number three
- 4:28is the Zoom. 10 second check -in. So we've all
- 4:32been pretty virtual for a while. I feel like
- 4:34in the last five years, I don't know how many
- 4:36camera meetings I had before 2020, but I think
- 4:39we all have learned through the years of what
- 4:41works and what doesn't. And I think one of the
- 4:43biggest takeaways that I have been on the other
- 4:45end of is people showing up like they just rolled
- 4:48out of bed and it's So unprofessional. And Melanie
- 4:52talked about, you know, you don't have to sit
- 4:53there and be, you know, in your blazer and dressed
- 4:56up and perfume on and ready to go. But maybe
- 4:58you do. Maybe that'll make you feel better. And
- 5:00I know that if I'm totally bumming it out for
- 5:03the day, that better mean I'm sitting here kind
- 5:05of getting stuff that done, maybe being creative,
- 5:08probably not jumping on any calls with anyone.
- 5:10But you need to show up for your Zoom or your
- 5:13team's meeting, whatever those virtual meetings
- 5:14are, just as you would in the office. You wouldn't
- 5:17probably roll into your office with a hoodie.
- 5:19and your hair on top of your head and just feeling
- 5:21like you probably don't really give a shit about
- 5:24the day. So don't do that on virtual meetings.
- 5:27I'm telling you, I've been on the receiving end
- 5:29of that as a boss of people on my team who showed
- 5:31up like that. And it just gives you a feeling
- 5:33that they don't care, they're not engaged, or
- 5:36like they literally just rolled out of bed. So
- 5:39take a little pause. Check out how you're showing
- 5:42up virtually and even your surroundings. Light,
- 5:44as you know, makes a big difference. So we've
- 5:47all been doing virtual meetings long enough.
- 5:48This shouldn't be new news, but I think sometimes
- 5:51it's great to take a step back and just evaluate
- 5:53how you're showing up and what you look like
- 5:55when you're on camera. Next key takeaway was
- 5:58building your style code. Now, again, this isn't.
- 6:02go burn everything in your closet and start over.
- 6:05This isn't about going out and buying all the
- 6:08most expensive brands and having some major shopping
- 6:10sprees. So do not take that as this. This is
- 6:13going back to defining what your brand is and
- 6:15what you want to represent and then building
- 6:18a style code around that. And this is you. This
- 6:21is your brand. This isn't even what the latest
- 6:24fall trend is. And I love how when I asked her,
- 6:26you know, how much do trends play into our closet
- 6:29and she said they really shouldn't. Unless it's
- 6:32something that you know really fits into your
- 6:34style code and helps you represent that brand
- 6:37that you want to be So her style code is pretty
- 6:40simple It's again going back to those brand rule
- 6:43words the ones that you just wrote and then doing
- 6:45the fit rules You know kind of taking a look
- 6:47at necklines hemlines silhouettes. What's flatters
- 6:50you? What are you going to feel good in not what
- 6:54you think? somebody else is looking for you to
- 6:56show up on. And I get this, this is a hard one.
- 6:59And I talked about on the episode when I first
- 7:01started Hershey was really conservative. I mean,
- 7:03it was, they literally said you couldn't wear
- 7:06four inch heels and you couldn't wear big earrings.
- 7:08I mean, it was, again, this was a while ago.
- 7:10It was definitely this old school conservative
- 7:13feel. Now, I know that has evolved, thankfully,
- 7:15for those who are there. But you start to feel
- 7:17like you have to conform. And I love that I said,
- 7:20well, you know, if I feel like, oh, is my neckline
- 7:23too low or is my skirt too short or whatever
- 7:25it is? She said it probably isn't because at
- 7:28least you are aware of that. Now, if you're not
- 7:30questioning that, maybe you should take a step
- 7:32back. Or again, this is a great time to phone
- 7:33a friend and get feedback. But you have to build
- 7:36style code that fits your brand, what you're
- 7:39trying to achieve, and that you're going to feel
- 7:41comfortable in. I know we've all been there where
- 7:44you wear something that you're like, I don't
- 7:46know if I should have actually worn this and
- 7:47you leave the house and you're sitting in a meeting
- 7:49and you're so uncomfortable. It just changes
- 7:51your way of engaging. It changes your confidence
- 7:54and it could be because something you feel isn't
- 7:57flattering. It could be too tight. It could be
- 7:59uncomfortable. Let's talk about how many times
- 8:01I have worn shoes that were super cute. and not
- 8:04comfortable by the end of the day, you are crawling
- 8:08back to your office because you can't walk anymore.
- 8:11So we're all guilty of that. I especially have
- 8:13been very guilty of that with shoes through the
- 8:15years. So find things that you feel confident
- 8:18and comfortable in and are continuing to build
- 8:21that brand. So the action item here is block
- 8:2520 minutes this week and check those boxes. Have
- 8:28your brand words, check the fit rules, look at
- 8:30the color, back to the color piece and what are
- 8:33the colors that you look good in. And then some
- 8:36of those signature details, whether it's shoes
- 8:38or textures or jewelry, we all kind of have our
- 8:41thing that we like. So embrace that and create
- 8:43those formulas that you have that when you need
- 8:46to. go to a board meeting, you have your structured
- 8:49blazer and your column of colors and maybe pointed
- 8:52shoes. And if you're giving a keynote, the statement
- 8:55jacket and the tailored pants, and if you're
- 8:57on zoom, the jewel tone net and the clean neckline,
- 9:00maybe some simple hoop earrings, whatever it
- 9:03is, it's figuring out what is right for you.
- 9:06So here's the thing that we all need to realize.
- 9:07And I love that Melanie said this, the most important
- 9:10person that we get dressed for is ourselves.
- 9:13It's not for anyone else. It's for ourselves.
- 9:15And I love that she said that. So it's going
- 9:17through the process of figuring out what you
- 9:20need to happen, what needs to happen throughout
- 9:22the day, how you're going to show up and be that.
- 9:25best version of yourself. How do you do it? Maybe
- 9:28it is putting perfume on and wearing high heels
- 9:32and whatever it is that you need is what you
- 9:35need to do and go for it. So finding out what
- 9:37that is and making a plan to get there is pretty
- 9:40simple. And it's again, it's not buying a whole
- 9:42new closet. Sorry. She said most women are 75
- 9:45% there. It's just sorting through and making
- 9:48a plan. And I love how she said many of us have
- 9:51learned to kind of blend in to belong, especially
- 9:54in male dominated industries. And that's armor,
- 9:57not presence. So you can be powerful. And if
- 10:00you want to be feminine, you can be feminine
- 10:02on your terms. If this helped, send this to a
- 10:04woman you're rooting for. And if you haven't
- 10:06listened to Melanie's full episode, I strongly
- 10:09encourage you to do so. As always, subscribe,
