- 0:11Hello friends, Sean here. Great to have your company.
- 0:15I hope you're going well on this Tuesday the 26th of November.
- 0:19Boy, less than a month till Christmas now we are getting
- 0:22close to the pointy end of it all.
- 0:24I bet your weeks are starting to fill up.
- 0:26Your Friday nights and Saturday nights are getting full of
- 0:28Christmas functions. Oh isn't this great?
- 0:31Lots of time with friends and colleagues and family and all of
- 0:35the the good things that we get to enjoy at this time of year.
- 0:39Boy, loosen your belts in anticipation of all the good
- 0:43food coming your way. But we are not going to be
- 0:46eating well. You might be eating right now,
- 0:47but for most of us, probably not.
- 0:49As we read the next chapter of this book of Acts and you are
- 0:53starting to see a shift in the story.
- 0:55Now the whole of the church to this point has been blossoming
- 0:59out of Jerusalem where the the kind of the hub or the apex of
- 1:03this movement has become. But now, now we see as these
- 1:07apostles head out and preach and the church starts to grow
- 1:11elsewhere, that the church is not, I guess, domiciled in
- 1:16Jerusalem anymore. But you're getting these other
- 1:18areas that are becoming home bases for these apostles.
- 1:23And one of these is Antioch that you will see begin to get
- 1:27mentioned as a home base. So this is when the church
- 1:30really is starting to spread and take shape beyond its origin,
- 1:35but to become a force of its own as the Holy Spirit moves and
- 1:40builds up both Gentiles and Jews to become a church that will
- 1:44spread to the far reaches of the world.
- 1:48So this is an exciting story. Let us continue read it together
- 1:51as we read today Acts chapter 14.
- 2:05The same thing happened in Iconium.
- 2:07Paul and Barnabas went to the Jewish synagogue and preached
- 2:10with such power that a great number of both Jews and Greeks
- 2:14became believers. Some of the Jews, however,
- 2:18spurned God's message and poisoned the minds of the
- 2:21Gentiles against Paul and Barnabas.
- 2:24But the apostles stay there a long time, preaching boldly
- 2:28about the grace of the Lord, And the Lord proved their message
- 2:31was true by giving them power to do miraculous signs and wonders.
- 2:36But the people of the town were divided in their opinion about
- 2:39them. Some sided with the Jews and
- 2:42some with the apostles. Then a mob of Gentiles and Jews,
- 2:46along with their leaders, decided to attack and stone
- 2:50them. When the apostles learned of it,
- 2:52they fled to the region of Lyceonia, to the towns of Lystra
- 2:57and Derby and the surrounding area, and there they preached
- 3:01the good news. While they were at Lystra, Paul
- 3:05and Barnabas came upon a man with crippled feet.
- 3:08He had been that way from birth, so he had never walked.
- 3:12He was sitting and listening as Paul preached.
- 3:15Looking straight at him, Paul realised he had faith to be
- 3:18healed. So Paul called to him in a loud
- 3:21voice. Stand up.
- 3:24And the man jumped to his feet and started walking.
- 3:28When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in their
- 3:31local dialect. These men are gods in human
- 3:34form. They decided that Barnabas was
- 3:37the Greek God Zeus and that Paul was Hermes, since he was the
- 3:41chief speaker. Now the temple of Zeus was
- 3:44located just outside the town, so the priest of the temple and
- 3:48the crowd brought bulls and wreaths of flowers to the town
- 3:52gates, and they prepared to offer sacrifices to the
- 3:54apostles. But when the apostles Barnabas
- 3:58and Paul heard what was happening, they tore their
- 4:00clothing in dismay and ran out among the people shouting.
- 4:05Friends, why are you doing this? We are merely human beings just
- 4:09like you. We have come to bring you the
- 4:12good news that you should turn from these worthless things and
- 4:16turn to the living God who made heaven and earth, the sea and
- 4:21everything in them. In the past He permitted all the
- 4:25nations to go their own ways, but He never left them without
- 4:28evidence of Himself and His goodness.
- 4:31For instance, He sends you rain and good crops, and gives you
- 4:36food and joyful hearts. But even with these words, Paul
- 4:40and Barnabas could scarcely restrain the people from
- 4:43sacrificing to them. Then some Jews arrived from
- 4:47Antioch and Iconium and won the crowds to their side.
- 4:52They stoned Paul and dragged him out of town, thinking he was
- 4:55dead. But as the believers gathered
- 4:58around him, he got up and went back into the town.
- 5:02The next day he left with Barnabas for Derby.
- 5:06After preaching the good news in Derby and making many disciples,
- 5:10Paul and Barnabas returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch of
- 5:15Presidia, where they strengthened the believers.
- 5:18They encouraged them to continue in the faith, reminding them
- 5:22that we must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom
- 5:25of God. Paul and Barnabas also appointed
- 5:29elders in every church. With prayer and fasting, they
- 5:33turned the elders over to the care of the Lord in whom they
- 5:36had put their trust. Then they travelled back through
- 5:40Presidio to Pamphylia. They preached the Word and Perga
- 5:44then went down to Italia. Finally they returned by ship to
- 5:49Antioch of Syria, where their journey had begun.
- 5:53The believers there had entrusted them to the grace of
- 5:56God to do the work they had now completed.
- 5:59Upon arriving in Antioch, they called the church together and
- 6:02reported everything God had done through them.
- 6:05And now He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles too,
- 6:10and they stayed there with the believers for a long time.
- 6:23Lord, thank you for your good news and for your love and for
- 6:29community. And Lord, we see that as your
- 6:33church grew, they gathered together and supported each
- 6:36other and created a safe space. Our Lord, I thank you for your
- 6:43heart of inclusion and love and grace and acceptance.
- 6:51And Lord, I pray that as we live in Christian community that we
- 6:56would model this to each other so that we can create a space
- 7:01that not only nurtures each other but shows the world a
- 7:06different way of being. So that as they see the way we
- 7:11live, they can be inspired to wonder how this can be.
- 7:15And Lord, that we could point them to you.
- 7:20But more importantly, Lord, I just thank you that no matter
- 7:23how well or poorly we do this, that you do love us, and that
- 7:29you do throw open your arms and invite us into your family.
- 7:35Thank you, Jesus, that you did everything that was required for
- 7:38us to be saved and that with you and through you we stand before
- 7:44your Father and his arms are open wide, accepting us home as
- 7:50that prodigal son or daughter to a dearly loving Heavenly Father.
- 7:57We thank you and we praise you. And it's in your name that we
- 8:00pray all these things. Amen.
