- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14This is the final episode of our first
- 0:16series, Imagining Work.
- 0:18Thank you for joining me on this 14
- 0:20episode walk through different stories about work, different
- 0:23images of work from the Bible.
- 0:25I hope that it's been helpful for you.
- 0:27It's caused me to return to some of
- 0:29my own struggles with work in prayer and
- 0:31think about what images are really shaping my
- 0:34mind and my heart when it comes to
- 0:36work.
- 0:36I hope it's helped you do the same
- 0:38and helped you most of all connect with
- 0:40Jesus.
- 0:41And as you know, during this series, we've
- 0:43been asking the question, what story about work
- 0:46am I living in?
- 0:47And so I thought it would be appropriate
- 0:49to conclude with a story from scripture about
- 0:52the imagination, about what we can see in
- 0:55God's world.
- 1:00So this one is from Second Kings chapter
- 1:03six.
- 1:04And just to give a little bit of
- 1:05context, this is during a time when the
- 1:07people of Israel were in conflict with a
- 1:10nation called Aram.
- 1:11And there was a prophet in Israel at
- 1:13that time, Elisha, sometimes referred to as the
- 1:16man of God in this passage.
- 1:18And this is about Elisha and his servant.
- 1:21And it's about what his servant is able
- 1:23to see in God's world in the course
- 1:26of the work that they're doing in the
- 1:28work of prophetic ministry and in this great
- 1:31conflict between Aram and Israel.
- 1:34The story actually has some humor to it
- 1:36because Elisha as a prophet is basically like
- 1:40the CIA for Israel.
- 1:42He's using his prophetic insight to gather military
- 1:44intelligence about the plans of the king of
- 1:47Aram, which causes problems for Aram because Israel
- 1:49knows what he's planning to do in terms
- 1:51of military strategy.
- 1:52So that's where the story starts.
- 1:54We'll start there and then we'll get to
- 1:55the part that's about the imagination, about what
- 1:57we can see.
- 1:59So this is second Kings, chapter six, starting
- 2:00in verse eight.
- 2:03Now the king of Aram was at war
- 2:05with Israel.
- 2:06After conferring with his officers, he said, I
- 2:08will set up my camp in such and
- 2:10such a place.
- 2:11The man of God sent word to the
- 2:13king of Israel.
- 2:14Beware of passing that place because the Arameans
- 2:16are going down there.
- 2:17So the king of Israel checked on the
- 2:19place indicated by the man of God.
- 2:21Time and again, Elisha warned the king so
- 2:23that he was on his guard in such
- 2:24places.
- 2:26This enraged the king of Aram.
- 2:27He summoned his officers and demanded of them.
- 2:30Will you not tell me which of us
- 2:31is on the side of the king of
- 2:32Israel?
- 2:34None of us, my Lord, the king said
- 2:35one of his officers.
- 2:36But Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel,
- 2:38tells the king of Israel the very words
- 2:40you speak in your bedroom.
- 2:42Go find out where he is.
- 2:44The king ordered so I can send men
- 2:45and capture him.
- 2:47The report came back.
- 2:48He is in Dothan.
- 2:49Then he sent horses and chariots and a
- 2:51strong force there.
- 2:52They went by night and surrounded the city.
- 2:55When the servant of the man of God
- 2:57got up and went out early the next
- 2:59morning, an army with horses and chariots had
- 3:01surrounded the city.
- 3:03Oh, my Lord, what shall we do?
- 3:04The servant asked.
- 3:06Don't be afraid, the prophet answered.
- 3:09Those who are with us are more than
- 3:11those who are with them.
- 3:13And Elisha prayed, Oh, Lord, open his eyes
- 3:16so he may see.
- 3:19Then the Lord opened the servant's eyes and
- 3:21he looked and saw the hills full of
- 3:23horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
- 3:28As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha
- 3:30prayed to the Lord, strike these people with
- 3:32blindness.
- 3:33So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha
- 3:34had asked.
- 3:36Elisha told them, this is not the road
- 3:38and this is not the city.
- 3:39Follow me and I will lead you to
- 3:40the man you were looking for.
- 3:42And he led them to Samaria.
- 3:44After they entered the city, Elisha said, Lord,
- 3:46open the eyes of these men so they
- 3:48can see.
- 3:49Then the Lord opened their eyes and they
- 3:51looked.
- 3:51And there they were inside Samaria.
- 3:54When the king of Israel saw him, he
- 3:58asked Elisha, shall I kill them, my father?
- 4:00Shall I kill them?
- 4:01Do not kill them, he answered.
- 4:03Would you kill men you have captured with
- 4:05your own sword or bow?
- 4:06Set food and water before them so that
- 4:08they may eat and drink and then go
- 4:09back to their master.
- 4:11So he prepared a great feast for them.
- 4:13And after they had finished eating and drinking,
- 4:14he sent them away and they returned to
- 4:16their master.
- 4:18So the bands from Aram stopped raiding Israel's
- 4:21territory.
- 4:23This is a really delightful story.
- 4:25Again, it has that humor, right?
- 4:27You can even hear in the King of
- 4:30Israel's question, should I kill him?
- 4:31Should I kill him?
- 4:31He's just so ready to commit this atrocity
- 4:34against prisoners of war.
- 4:36And yet Elisha restrains him, right?
- 4:38Elisha ministers the mercy of God.
- 4:40Even in this extremely violent, ancient near eastern
- 4:43military context, he says, these are prisoners that
- 4:45we've captured.
- 4:46Let's let them go back.
- 4:48And that mercy is likely part of what
- 4:50leads to the King of Aram abandoning his
- 4:52attacks against Israel.
- 4:55So we see the mercy of God in
- 4:56this passage.
- 4:57We see a kind of cleverness, even humor
- 4:59in the way that God resolves the situation.
- 5:02But we also see this motif of eyes
- 5:05being opened to see.
- 5:08So with the captured Eremian soldiers, they're blinded.
- 5:12And that's what allows Elisha to lead them
- 5:13away to a different place.
- 5:15And then their eyes are opened and they
- 5:17see, oh, no, we've we've been captured.
- 5:20We thought we were in command, but we
- 5:22aren't.
- 5:24And then even more poignantly, there's the moment
- 5:26with Elisha's servant where he is so afraid
- 5:31because he can see the enemy troops.
- 5:35But Elisha says, don't be afraid.
- 5:38And Elisha prays, Lord, open his eyes so
- 5:41he may see.
- 5:43And then the servant can see that there
- 5:46are other horses and other chariots, horses and
- 5:49chariots of fire, the forces of God's angel
- 5:53armies surrounding and protecting him and his master
- 5:57Elisha and all of God's people.
- 6:01This is, for me, one of the most
- 6:03powerful images in the Bible of the reality
- 6:06of God's kingdom being made visible to someone.
- 6:11It's not that the horses and chariots of
- 6:13fire weren't there until the servant had his
- 6:16eyes opened.
- 6:17They were there the whole time.
- 6:19There's a spiritual reality surrounding us at all
- 6:21times.
- 6:22But we often just can't see it.
- 6:25We often forget that it's there.
- 6:27And so when God opens the servant's eyes,
- 6:30he sees the previously unseen real.
- 6:34He sees the spiritual reality all around him
- 6:37of the love and power and protection of
- 6:41God in the middle of a very concrete
- 6:43and scary situation.
- 6:46This is what we need God to do
- 6:48for us.
- 6:49We need him to open our eyes so
- 6:51that we can see the reality of his
- 6:53love, his power, his protection in our lives,
- 6:57in the actual circumstances we inhabit.
- 7:00We don't just need stories that are inspirational,
- 7:03but then feel detached and disconnected from the
- 7:05actual stresses we face in the workplace or
- 7:08at home.
- 7:09We need something that's just as real as
- 7:12the difficulties we face when our alarm goes
- 7:14off in the morning.
- 7:16And that's exactly what God offers.
- 7:18He offers us the opportunity to see his
- 7:21reality.
- 7:23And so when I use the word imagination
- 7:25or the phrase imagining work in this series,
- 7:29it's very far from suggesting that we are
- 7:32dealing with something imaginary.
- 7:34Rather, it's through our imagination that God helps
- 7:38us grasp what's most real, what's most true
- 7:42about our environment.
- 7:44The things that are usually invisible or forgotten
- 7:47or unseen, we can bring to mind through
- 7:50the images of scripture and begin to see.
- 7:54And that changes our relationship with God and
- 7:56our relationship with the difficulties we face at
- 7:58work and everywhere else.
- 8:01An example of this in somebody's own life,
- 8:05somebody that's probably familiar to some of us,
- 8:07is the writer C.S. Lewis.
- 8:10He has a book in which he narrates
- 8:11his own journey of coming to faith because
- 8:14he was a skeptic for a long time
- 8:15before embracing theism and eventually the way of
- 8:18Jesus.
- 8:19The book is called Surprised by Joy.
- 8:22And he describes an experience he had very
- 8:24early on.
- 8:25This was before he had any conscious religious
- 8:27awareness.
- 8:29And he was reading a novel by the
- 8:31author George McDonald.
- 8:32And the name of the novel is Fantasties.
- 8:35And he talks about how something happened to
- 8:38him while he was reading the novel, something
- 8:40opened up inside of him.
- 8:42And he writes, that night, my imagination was,
- 8:46in a certain sense, baptized.
- 8:48The rest of me, not unnaturally, took longer.
- 8:51I had not the faintest notion what I
- 8:53had let myself in for by buying Fantasties.
- 8:58So even though Lewis isn't consciously coming to
- 9:00a Christian faith in this moment, he's saying
- 9:03that something has happened to him, his imagination
- 9:05has been baptized.
- 9:08Just by reading this novel, written by a
- 9:10devout and wonderful Christian author, George McDonald, he
- 9:13catches something in his vision of reality and
- 9:16that begins to shift something inside of him.
- 9:19Well, if this is true for coming to
- 9:21faith, right, that this was something that caught
- 9:23Lewis's imagination and eventually led to his conversion,
- 9:26this is also the pattern for growing in
- 9:29faith, leaning into that metaphor of the baptized
- 9:32imagination.
- 9:33To baptize is to immerse, to saturate.
- 9:38And so if we want our imaginations to
- 9:40be baptized, we need to soak in the
- 9:42images of the Bible, the stories that God
- 9:45gives us for understanding his unseen reality all
- 9:49around us.
- 9:50And that's what we've been trying to do
- 9:51in this series, is just look at those
- 9:53images that can woo our imagination, that can
- 9:57baptize our imagination, that can lead us to
- 10:00see things that we haven't seen before, that
- 10:02really are there in God's care for us.
- 10:06And this is, of course, exactly what the
- 10:07Bible tells us to do.
- 10:10So famous verse Philippians 4-8 says, Finally,
- 10:14brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is
- 10:18noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever
- 10:22is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is
- 10:26excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.
- 10:31We're explicitly commanded in Scripture to set our
- 10:33minds on these things, to invite the images
- 10:37of what is truly good, truly noble into
- 10:40our minds and hearts so that they can
- 10:42begin to change us.
- 10:45And this is what helps us answer the
- 10:47stories that misshape and misdirect our imaginations about
- 10:52work, those stories that we started looking at
- 10:54at the first part of this series.
- 10:57Because ultimately, it's as we see the reality
- 10:59of God's love and we see Jesus that
- 11:03we overcome the allure of those other stories.
- 11:06Because Jesus is the one who helps us
- 11:08reconcile with our pain.
- 11:10He helps us find contentment as we reconcile
- 11:12with the limitations of our jobs and the
- 11:14imperfections of our work life.
- 11:16He helps us reconcile with the work itself,
- 11:18working as for him and with him.
- 11:21And he helps us reconcile with the rest
- 11:23of life, not worshipping work, not sacrificing things
- 11:26on the altar of work that should be
- 11:28kept sacred, but being able to attend to
- 11:30everything that truly matters.
- 11:33Because Jesus is ultimately the one who accomplishes
- 11:37these things in us.
- 11:39Jesus is the gardener.
- 11:41He's the artist, the priest, the builder, the
- 11:45king, the servant, the friend, the emissary.
- 11:51When our imaginations are open, we can see
- 11:55the hills full of horses and chariots of
- 11:58fire all around us.
- 12:00But most of all, we can see Jesus.
- 12:06Lord, open our eyes so we may see.
- 12:11Do your work in us as we do
- 12:13our work with you.
- 12:20Thanks for listening.
