- 0:00All right, Brian, let's turn to the world of sports.
- 0:01NFL free agency is upon us. It officially begins tomorrow,
- 0:05but teams already have been able to negotiate deals with players.
- 0:10Let's start with the quarterback market.
- 0:12Sam Bradford. Sorry, Sam Darnold.
- 0:16Sam Bradford. There's a name from the past.
- 0:17Different Sam who was an UN high drafted was underachiever.
- 0:20Well, Sam Darnold was an underachiever up until this last
- 0:22year. Had a great year with Minnesota.
- 0:24He signs for about $33 million a year, goes to Seattle.
- 0:30And then Justin Fields who played for our favorite team,
- 0:32the Pittsburgh Steelers last year, He goes to The Jets for 20
- 0:36million a year, 2 year deal. And now you have Aaron Rodgers
- 0:41at 41 years old sitting out there.
- 0:43And Adam Schefter reporting today that the Steelers are
- 0:46waiting to hear back from Rodgers on whether he'll sign
- 0:49with them. And Russell Wilson, who was the
- 0:52Steelers starting quarterback most of last year, it remains
- 0:55unsided. Looks like he is the Steelers
- 0:57backup plan. So I know you and I, we're kind
- 1:00of hoping our Steelers would land on some decent outcome at
- 1:04quarterback. How?
- 1:05What do you make of the way the quarterback Domino's have fallen
- 1:08so far? Well, the one that you didn't
- 1:10mention, I think is actually probably the first domino in
- 1:13this entire thing was Geno Smith going to the Las Vegas Raiders.
- 1:18I know maybe you don't get to see Gino play a lot, but if you
- 1:22actually look into the analytics, I it's fairly
- 1:24indisputable Gino Smith is now a top ten quarterback.
- 1:28I mean, if you think about him as Gino Smith, the failed New
- 1:31York Jet, the guy who rode the pine for a while and you just
- 1:35have that view of him, then you really haven't been paying
- 1:37attention because he threw for 4300 yards with a terrible,
- 1:41terrible offensive line in Seattle.
- 1:43Like God awful offensive line. Now, granted, he had three great
- 1:47receivers, so that really helped.
- 1:50But Geno Smith going to Las Vegas is what put Darnold in
- 1:56Seattle. I think Darnold is a downgrade
- 2:00in Seattle, but he's cheaper and Darnold is still now a very good
- 2:06quarterback. And I obviously I, you know, the
- 2:08six degrees of separation, the Kevin Bacon thing there is they
- 2:11were both New York Jet draft picks who were terrible that
- 2:15have resurrected their career. And I mean, good for those guys
- 2:18cuz that like that does happen sometimes where, you know, a guy
- 2:21gets drafted high, it doesn't work out.
- 2:23They latch on later on and you know, they're like a Baker
- 2:25Mayfield type who has been rejuvenated in Tampa Bay.
- 2:28So I like Gino for the Raiders, getting a veteran quarterback,
- 2:35having Pete Carroll, you know, they're a potential playoff team
- 2:38with that signing. Does Darnold going to Seattle
- 2:41make them a playoff contender? I don't think so because I think
- 2:45they're in the toughest division in the NFL overall, because the
- 2:49Cardinals are good. The 49ers are going to be good
- 2:52again. They were decimated by injuries
- 2:54last year and I and obviously the Rams are in that division
- 3:01and it we're going to see what happens with Matthew Stafford.
- 3:05I'm I, I, I think he's probably going to end up staying in LA,
- 3:09but we'll, we'll appear. So it appears we'll see what
- 3:12happens there. So let me get to the one that
- 3:15I'm disappointed by. Is Justin Fields not being a
- 3:18Pittsburgh Steeler anymore. I think Justin Fields has a high
- 3:22ceiling. Could it all like could it all
- 3:26not work out? I, I don't know, but he, he was
- 3:29playing great as a starter until Russell W Russell Wilson healed
- 3:33up five touchdowns, one pick, good completion percentage.
- 3:38Granted, it wasn't complicated what they were doing, but he ran
- 3:41a ton. I think it's a great signing by
- 3:44the New York Jets at an incredible value.
- 3:47They're not committed long term. So if it doesn't work out, fine.
- 3:50If he turns into the gem that I think he's going to be, then The
- 3:55Jets good for that man. I think they got the steal of
- 3:59this QB market so far. I think I agree with you.
- 4:05There weren't any great options, which is why they were free
- 4:08agents. I mean if you look at, if you go
- 4:10back and look at free agent quarterback signings over the
- 4:12last 10 or 15 years, very rarely do you get a long term franchise
- 4:17quarterback. Out of free agency?
- 4:19No. Because the long term franchise
- 4:21quarterbacks don't make it to free agents.
- 4:23No. Why would that?
- 4:25But if you're going to gamble on one, which is these guys are all
- 4:28gambles, why not gamble on the guy who is still in his athletic
- 4:33prime, who can run like the wind, is incredibly comfortable
- 4:38scrambling and has that upside and potential and has shown it
- 4:43in flashes? It's like he's never shown you
- 4:45anything. No, he played good in Chicago
- 4:47too, I mean. He's the guy.
- 4:48I I I am so disappointed that the Steelers let him get away
- 4:55and instead it looks like they're going to be stuck with
- 4:58either Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson.
- 5:01I don't like either one of those options.
- 5:03I don't like either. I'd rather have Wilson, and the
- 5:05reason is because Wilson's five years younger and in many.
- 5:10He's not coming off, he's surgery.
- 5:13Well, that too. And also in most statistical
- 5:15categories. Most, not all, he was actually
- 5:17better than Rodgers last year. Remember, Rodgers will turn 42
- 5:21this December and I looked at his stats the last two full
- 5:25years he's played. So not counting 23 where he tore
- 5:29his Achilles in game one. If you look at last year when he
- 5:33played seventeen games, and then his final year in Green Bay,
- 5:362022, when he played seventeen games.
- 5:38Big sample size, right? His quarterback, his QBRS, those
- 5:44two years, 41.3 and 48, those are the worst QB Rs that he has
- 5:53had in his entire career since he became a full time starter.
- 5:57He is play. Aaron Rodgers wasn't one time
- 5:59obviously one of the top quarterbacks ever played the
- 6:01game. Maybe the best ever.
- 6:03He's great. He is so far removed from that
- 6:05guy now you are getting the scraps of that guy.
- 6:09Give me he can't move at all. He got sacked all the time last
- 6:12year in New York. Give me Russell Wilson, because
- 6:15at least Wilson is still, despite the fact that he's not
- 6:18what he once was either, he is still excellent at one thing,
- 6:24and that is the deep ball. Bill Barnwell pointed this out
- 6:27in his article the other day when the after the DK Metcalf
- 6:29signing Russell Wilson. Despite whatever flaws, whatever
- 6:34other deterioration has happened in his game, and if you're a
- 6:36Steeler fan or a Bronco fan, you know that he has some
- 6:40weaknesses. He is outstanding at throwing
- 6:44the deep ball he's been his entire career.
- 6:46He remains so now, and the Steelers just so happened to
- 6:49have. Pickens and Metcalf.
- 6:51On one side who runs a 4/3 and is a beast and George Pickens on
- 6:56the other side if they don't trade him, who also runs like a
- 6:594/3 and is a beast. And if those two guys are
- 7:02healthy and their heads are screwed on straight?
- 7:05That's a big F. For Pickens, was a big F with
- 7:07Pickens that is potentially dynamic if you have a
- 7:12quarterback who's as Wilson is good, really good at the deep
- 7:16ball. And I.
- 7:18I am hoping. I am hoping Rogers says no.
- 7:21I think if Rogers comes, the Steelers will finish.
- 7:25Eight and seven. Nine in the first round of the
- 7:27five. No, they will not have a losing
- 7:29record. Tomlin will not allow it.
- 7:31Tomlin will not allow it. And then you know what?
- 7:33Rogers will be gone, and we'll be right.
- 7:35Back here Square. One now with not a good draft
- 7:38pick, not a pick good enough to get a franchise QB sorting
- 7:42through the scrap heap again. So I really, really think we
- 7:45missed. We made a, we made a mistake.
- 7:48I'm not saying it's a huge mistake, but we made a mistake
- 7:50not resigning Fields. I just hope Aaron Rodgers says
- 7:53no or the Steelers have a change of heart and they get Russell
- 7:56Wilson. Give me Russell Wilson for the
- 7:58next couple years. I would much rather have that
- 8:01stability as I look for my long term answer than a one year deal
- 8:05with a 42 year, soon to be 42 year old Aaron Rodgers.
- 8:08So I just want to be clear that the reason I don't want Aaron
- 8:12Rodgers has nothing to do with anything other than his play on
- 8:15the field. Like you and I have talked about
- 8:18this on the show before and you know this, I I could care less
- 8:21if he believes in Buddha or whatever.
- 8:25Dude, do your thing. Take your mushrooms.
- 8:28What about your stance on the COVID vaccine is?
- 8:30Right, I could care less. It doesn't mean anything to me.
- 8:34I just want to see laser beams being fired on the field.
- 8:38The reason I don't want Aaron Rodgers Steeler fan is twofold.
- 8:42One has been his recent play on the field.
- 8:44But the biggest 1 is this is where the spoiled Steeler fan
- 8:49rears its ugly, ugly head. I am so used to us drafting
- 8:56players, developing them, they become stars and that's that's
- 9:01the cornerstone of this franchise.
- 9:04Whether it was Rod Woodson back in the day or Ben Roethlisberger
- 9:09or on and on and on. Heinz Ward, you know a middle
- 9:13round pick from Georgia becomes a Super Bowl MVP.
- 9:17US. Well, I told you last week,
- 9:19trading for DK met. No, we talked about this on the
- 9:22phone. Trading for DK Metcalf was so
- 9:25weird to us because you mentioned Minka Fitzpatrick, but
- 9:29before Minka Fitzpatrick, the largest transaction they made
- 9:32was for Jerome Bettis, who is older than both of us.
- 9:36I mean, so it's been a long time since we did that and I liked
- 9:42it. I do like that move.
- 9:44But at the quarterback position, I I understand putting a
- 9:48placeholder in there for a year, but we have to draft someone
- 9:51young and develop them. We we just have to.
- 9:54I know it didn't work out with Kenny Pickett.
- 9:56I wished it would have. This is why I don't run football
- 10:00teams, because I would have stuck with Kenny Pickett because
- 10:03I drafted him high. I believe in him.
- 10:06I think he could be a good quarterback.
- 10:08I I like to dance with the devil I know, Eric.
- 10:12You know, if I got a guy in the building and he's talented, I'm
- 10:15gonna try and work that. But people are so impatient.
- 10:19The problem with Pickett is he didn't, he hadn't.
- 10:23He had a a solid rookie considering the line issues and
- 10:29showed a lot of poise, won some close games late, had several
- 10:32game-winning drives. Overall numbers weren't great.
- 10:35But then he didn't he he arguably regressed in year 2
- 10:39and, and, and by the way, the Steelers didn't kick him to the
- 10:41curb. What the Steelers did is they
- 10:42said, look, we have an opportunity to essentially get
- 10:46Russell Wilson for free because Denver was paying.
- 10:50Yeah, like 30 million of the dollars.
- 10:54So essentially was essentially the Steelers got a guy who was a
- 10:56Super Bowl winning QB still in his mid 30s for the league
- 11:01minimum and and what they said is we're going to bring him in
- 11:03and you'll compete and pick it according to reports, basically
- 11:07said fuck it, I'm out. And they and so then that is
- 11:10when they pivoted straight the Philly and brought in fields.
- 11:14So I just want to set the record straight there, No?
- 11:15You did. I appreciate that.
- 11:17But I think the problem for the Steelers is they have not done a
- 11:20good job with first round draft picks for a long period of time.
- 11:26So between 20 that I saw this the other day, it reminded me of
- 11:29how bad it was. Because this is kind of to your
- 11:30point, not not just quarterback, but any first round, you have to
- 11:34hit on your first round pick. Like you can miss on 1/4 or 1/5,
- 11:37but you've got to hit on most of your firsts.
- 11:40The Steelers from 2018 to 2022. These were their first round
- 11:45picks. Terrell Edmonds, who was a
- 11:49starter for a while, didn't make it more than four or five years.
- 11:52No longer with the team. Devin Bush, briefly a starter,
- 11:55never had a second contract. No longer with the team.
- 11:58Najee Harris, 4000 yard seasons, but at 3.9 yards of carry,
- 12:03didn't make it to a second contract.
- 12:05Signed the other day with the Rams and Kenny Pickett.
- 12:08Those were four. Now one year, the only one they
- 12:10kind of hit on was actually a pick they didn't actually make.
- 12:14It was when they traded a first round draft pick for Minka
- 12:16Fitzpatrick. It was a Pro Bowl caliber
- 12:18safety. Well, I think that Jilly Porter
- 12:20junior too. Right, but that wasn't but that
- 12:23that. Was in that time frame, yeah.
- 12:25Right. So in that time frame, they
- 12:26missed on these guys. Now, since then we'll see.
- 12:29Joey Porter, junior looks like a stud, a corner.
- 12:31Roderick Jones I think will be very good.
- 12:33The guy, the tackle they picked last year, I think will also be
- 12:36very good. So they're they're getting
- 12:37better. But the point is you're right
- 12:39when you're in the no man's land as Steelers, we were so spoiled.
- 12:43We talked you and I have talked about this before on the show
- 12:46Ben Roethlisberger, spoiled Steeler fan so.
- 12:48Badly when you. When you have that question
- 12:51answered, yes of who your guy is, it's such a luxury in this
- 12:55league and now that you haven't had it, you see how hard it is.
- 12:59Oh yeah. The only way to avoid it being
- 13:02hard is to bottom out and be awful and get a high draft pick
- 13:07on a can't miss quarterback, and even that's not a guarantee.
- 13:09No, you could be The Jets. Right.
- 13:12Sometimes they met Zach Wilson. There's so many examples, Sam
- 13:14Brad for Justin Field. But the point is that gives you
- 13:17a better chance. But in order to do that, you
- 13:19have to stink for probably sometimes for multiple years.
- 13:23And the Steelers just don't do that and I'm glad they don't do
- 13:25that. So what you have to do is I
- 13:28think exactly what they've done. Play the market as best you can
- 13:32and wait and hope that I got because remember Patrick, look
- 13:37at the quarterbacks around the league that are elite players
- 13:40that were not high draft picks. And by high I mean top 10,
- 13:44Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson, you can go down
- 13:48bow necks, you can go down the list.
- 13:50There are so many guys who are high quality quarterbacks who
- 13:55were not drafted in the top. Well, I think Mahomes was like
- 13:5710 exactly, wasn't he? Well, I thought.
- 14:00He and the Chiefs traded up to get him.
- 14:02I thought he was in the teens or 20s.
- 14:04Maybe I'm wrong on that. Russell Wilson, there's a lot of
- 14:07them. Aaron Rodgers, Rodgers went late
- 14:09first round, didn't he? So my point is you can get that
- 14:12guy and you hope have. To Rodgers went late first
- 14:15round, that's like. You have to hope that you can,
- 14:19that you can get that or the other option is you package a
- 14:23bunch of assets for a trade. The problem with the trade is
- 14:26teams don't trade the guy. They just pay him 50 million.
- 14:30They just don't do it. Why do I know that Patrick
- 14:33Mahomes was the 10th pick? I mean, what a waste of brain
- 14:37space I have. Was he the I confirmed it and
- 14:40I'm mad at myself that I got that.
- 14:41Right. OK, so I.
- 14:42Just. Why do I?
- 14:43So I'll take Mahomes out of there 'cause I said top ten and
- 14:46technically he was top ten, but look at all the other guys that
- 14:49I mentioned that were not top 10.
- 14:51So you can do it, but it's harder and, and, and then, but
- 14:55you just have to wait and you have to hope and you have to
- 14:57make the, the other thing you have to do too, is you have to
- 14:58make the other roster, the rest of the roster as good as
- 15:01possible, which is why, again, I was hoping they signed Fields
- 15:04because Fields at 20 million is less than half what a top tier
- 15:10quarterback makes right now on a yearly basis.
- 15:13The Top Gun guys are making 5055 million a year.
- 15:16Fields making 20 gives you a lot of flexibility if you got to, I
- 15:20don't even like what's Rodgers going to get?
- 15:22Are they going to pay? They're going to end up paying
- 15:24Aaron Rodgers like 35,000,000, aren't they?
- 15:27Aren't they Brian though? Is that what they're going to
- 15:29do? Are they going to pay Aaron
- 15:30Rodgers at 41 years old, 30 or 30?
- 15:33I hope not. And I'm going to jump out of a
- 15:35window of a tall. Building like they'll probably
- 15:37be good. They'll probably be 14 and 3.
- 15:41And I'll come back here and hear from that.
- 15:42I'll be like that was. A bit.
- 15:43Yeah, exactly. I said it all along.
- 15:46Right. Don't believe?
- 15:47The age Aaron Rodgers is the guy.
- 15:50Make it happen. I do want to say real quick,
- 15:52because I'm going through the list of all the NFL teams, it's
- 15:55remarkable how many quarterbacks were at the very top of the
- 15:58draft. I mean, you got the the little
- 16:01person out there in Arizona running around.
- 16:04He was, I believe he was the number one pick.
- 16:06Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, CJ Stroud in Houston, Mahomes,
- 16:12Stafford I think was the number one overall pick.
- 16:14Pennock in Atlanta, Carolina, the guy was the number one pick.
- 16:20Deshaun Watson, I think he was just the middle of the first
- 16:23round, so maybe that's one. In Cleveland, Goff was the
- 16:25number one overall pick. Indianapolis had a top right
- 16:29pick. Gino was a top five pick to I
- 16:33mean, yeah, I mean there. Are Herbert?
- 16:35Herbert was top 10. Herbert was to Trevor Lawrence
- 16:40the only one in Dallas. God, why you?
- 16:44Don't remember his? Name he was not.
- 16:46Yeah, Dak was. He was the first round pick, but
- 16:49he wasn't in the top. But my point being is, is 75% of
- 16:54the league quarterbacks are like top five.
- 16:56Picks let me counter. Let me counter cause here are
- 16:59the top quarterbacks and quarterback rating that had that
- 17:02had a decent number of attempts. Lamar Jackson not a top ten
- 17:06pick. Jared Goff was so that's one.
- 17:09One Burrough was so that's 21 Was Baker Mayfield.
- 17:14Was he talking? About He was the number one
- 17:15overall pick he. Was number 131.
- 17:17Hertz wasn't. So that's three two Darnold was.
- 17:21Yes. Herbert was.
- 17:23Yes. Josh Allen was, so that's six to
- 17:26two. Was two.
- 17:28Yeah, 2 was the number five pick. #5 so that's seven to two.
- 17:33Derek Carr, that's been a one. No, he was.
- 17:37He was a second round pick, so that's seven to three.
- 17:41Daniels, he was obviously 8 to 3.
- 17:44Jordan Love was not 8 to 4. Brock Purdy was not. 8:00 to
- 17:495:00. Russell Wilson was not 8:00 to
- 17:516:00. So if you just they're out of
- 17:53the Top 14, you had eight that were top ten, six that were.
- 17:57Rating is a terrible measure old man, but I get what you're doing
- 18:00you. Yes, most of those.
- 18:01Guys, I mentioned. Most of those guys I mentioned
- 18:04are among the best quarterbacks in the league or or should I say
- 18:07at least had the best years last year.
- 18:09Yeah. So, yeah, I think that's pretty
- 18:11clear. All right, one other I said,
- 18:12see, the Steelers did sign somebody just as we were
- 18:15talking. No, nobody big.
- 18:17It was a running back 'cause they lost Naji.
- 18:22Kenneth Gainwell, Remember him? It's a great name for a running
- 18:25back. Yeah, played.
- 18:27For Eagles, yeah. Yeah, Billy's lost a ton of
- 18:32guys. Did you see the list of the
- 18:33guys? I mean, like, I get it.
- 18:34This happens. To Super Bowl teams Every Super
- 18:36Bowl team, the. List of the guys that Philly
- 18:39either traded or lost is astounding.
- 18:43Joey Bosa to the Bills, One year, 12.6 million.
- 18:48He's hurt all the time. He is, but that's a nice signing
- 18:51to that getting. A boast of brother for half a
- 18:53season for 12.6. The the, the last thing I wanted
- 18:57to talk to you as it relates to free agency was a non free
- 19:00agent, but it was within the Steelers division with the
- 19:06Cleveland Browns and that was Miles Garrett getting an
- 19:09extension for three years and $120 million.
- 19:14Yes, I saw it. I.
- 19:15Wanted to talk about that specifically because you're
- 19:18mentioning all the guys that are leaving the Eagles.
- 19:21Miles Garrett is still a Cleveland Brown today because of
- 19:26money, and everyone is delusional if they think these
- 19:30guys simply aren't going places because of money.
- 19:35That is all that matters at the end of the day.
- 19:37Of course the Eagles are bleeding players.
- 19:41Maybe they wanted to stay in Philly.
- 19:42But that's the problem with the salary cap sport.
- 19:45You can't do it. There's only so much money to go
- 19:47around the talent pool. It is what it is.
- 19:50I can't. Who wants to live in Cleveland?
- 19:54I don't. But for 40 million a year, I'll
- 19:57move to Cleveland. Right.
- 19:59Like if you're very wealthy. Geography doesn't mean the same
- 20:03thing as it means to most people.
- 20:05Like if you have a private plane and you have, you know, a
- 20:08season, it's only four months long where you work and then you
- 20:11can fly anywhere you want and you have houses all over the
- 20:13place. It's not like our geography like
- 20:15we're most of us are stuck where we live 50 weeks a year unless
- 20:19we take vacation. I think that I watched Hard
- 20:22Knocks in season. Did you watch it?
- 20:24I did with the NFC North, AFC North.
- 20:26It was so good and it it featured the all the teams in
- 20:28the North and Miles Garrett, as you can imagine, got a lot of
- 20:31FaceTime and he you know, as often happens with players
- 20:35featured and that show that he came off very well and he came
- 20:39up as a guy who just wants to win.
- 20:41And obviously he is one of the greatest pass rushers of all
- 20:45time. He is he may go down as the best
- 20:47all time. He's the no one has ever had 100
- 20:49sacks he before they turn 29. He's the first player to ever do
- 20:53that 100 sacks before age 29. And so it's been he's been
- 20:57incredible. But I thought he talked a lot
- 21:01about in that at at at the end of Hard Knocks, how he he wanted
- 21:05to win, but he really wanted to be in Cleveland.
- 21:07The thing that leads creams to your point, though, is after the
- 21:11season ended, he put out a statement that said after giving
- 21:15it thought, I don't want to just go from Cleveland to Canton.
- 21:19I want to win. I want to be traded.
- 21:21And the Browns, to their credit, said you have two years left on
- 21:25your contract. We're not trading like no, we're
- 21:28not mad, no hard feelings. We're not going to shit on you,
- 21:30but we're not trading, which I thought was was great.
- 21:32That's how they should have played it.
- 21:34And I, I was wondering how is this going to shake out and how
- 21:37it shook out is a record for three years.
- 21:42So I, I you're right, Garrett said I want out.
- 21:46I want to be traded. Maybe they convinced him because
- 21:49they do have what, the number two overall pick and now Brian,
- 21:52they have Kenny Pickett. Oh.
- 21:54God, maybe what? Happened is Kenny Pickett signs
- 21:59and Garrett says you know what what we've turned it around now
- 22:02we have our God I. Really wish they would have
- 22:05signed Mason Rudolph in Cleveland.
- 22:08That's what I wish would have happened.
- 22:09Why is that? Because that's who Miles Garrett
- 22:12flung a helmet. That's right, yes, I forgot.
- 22:15Allegedly Mason Rudolph called him the N word, but there was no
- 22:18guaranteeation of that. Rudolph denied it.
- 22:21Everyone deny it. I had forgotten about that.
