- 0:56SPEAKER_03: I've been practicing on my mouth base.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: I can tell, you know, I was I've been listening to listening to some old shows.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: First of all, let me just say welcome into another season, 48-week run of solid recording.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Are you ready?
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, let's do it.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: Let's do it.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: But I've been listening to some of the old stuff, and you know, I've been kind of bullying you.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna apologize for some of the later shows.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: You got a little quiet in those later.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: In those first first shows of the year, you were like, you're pretty mouthy.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: So I'm apologizing for being a big ass fan.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the more the more you bully me, the quieter I get it.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: Oh no, you're gonna knock it off, buddy.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: I'm so sorry.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: I forgive you.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Just this one.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: New Year's resolutions.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Well, listen, I am really excited to kick off our opening uh recording season um with uh Gabriel Lucero.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: And you know, I I I had to make sure that I called you Gabriel, but I I've always I've only known you as Gabe.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, you were on my other shows when I was out at Zimes and stuff, and I and I and I'm and I'm sorry, I didn't mean to insult you in any way, shape, or form, but then you explained to me about the difference of the Gabe and the Gabe.
- 2:06SPEAKER_05: You remember?
- 2:07SPEAKER_05: I guess.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: I yeah, I am.
- 2:09SPEAKER_05: Well, somebody goes, I'll read, I'll remind everybody.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: If I tell everybody my name's Gabe, for whatever reason, they'll go, Dave, and then I go, Gabe.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: What's wrong with that?
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Nothing's wrong with that.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:21SPEAKER_05: Nothing's wrong with that.
- 2:22SPEAKER_05: But that's what I so now everybody just calls me Gabe, but you know, when I sign my name, I sign it Gabriel.
- 2:28SPEAKER_05: Or if somebody asks me, I say Gabriel, so I don't have to go through the whole thing.
- 2:32SPEAKER_05: The whole thing.
- 2:33SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: I I I signed my name, you know, legal-wise.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: My first name is Robert, not David.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: So, you know, I sign Robert David Nilson.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Which I don't know why I would do that.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: Why do I try to just go by your middle name?
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: You should have just stuck to it.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: Oh well.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: But see, I was told a long time ago by some number guy, the guy, you know, have you ever numerologists?
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: Have you ever heard of a numerologist?
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: He told me that Robert was my power name.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: So I needed to use Robert when it came to money and finances and stuff.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: It hasn't worked.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: The namologist or yeah, I've heard of that.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: Interesting.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: It hasn't worked.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Well, listen, I gotta tell you, Gabe, I'm extremely excited.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's a lot that has transpired.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: I was looking at your I was looking at your rap sheet uh before, and um I I I I didn't realize.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I had you on before, but uh in 2001 you got best arrangement, right?
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: Well, uh no, yeah.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, best arrangement originally.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's it.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: You sent me, yeah, you sent me this.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Now I realize it's 20 years ago, but I thought you're so starting down instead of down up.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: I'm going from the bottom up.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: We go to the newest.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: But uh, I'm so in love, and then there was uh the 2002 Best Novelty song, Dreaming.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: Is that on the on the track that you send?
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: No, sir.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: No, sir.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: That's old stuff.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: Really old stuff.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Lost to Time.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: I might I might have to have you sing that one since you're gonna do one light.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Can you remember that?
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: It's novelty.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: Novelty, yeah.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: I like that.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: That's why I want to hear it.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna put you on the spot.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: We'll see.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: Unless, like I said, it's lost to time.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: And then there was uh 2004 Country Song Push Me Away.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: Uh 2012, Best Country Song, You Don't Know Country.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: Pretty ballsy.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, he won the award, so I guess it paid off.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then in 21, just last year, best Western song.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Yes, sir.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Dong Doggone Shame.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: And I know that's on that uh CD that you sent, yes, Gammy.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: Because I I I love that song.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: We'll probably have to play that.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: But let's talk a little bit about you, Gabe.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: You've been kind of around the horn this past year.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: You're telling me you spent a lot of time walking the streets in Nashville?
- 4:45SPEAKER_05: No, that was a few years back.
- 4:47SPEAKER_05: Oh, was it a few years back?
- 4:48SPEAKER_05: A few years back, yeah.
- 4:49SPEAKER_05: I've tried uh I've been at it for a long time.
- 4:52SPEAKER_05: Started writing songs in high school.
- 4:55SPEAKER_05: Um wrote my first song called Watch Me Pee.
- 4:59SPEAKER_05: Which was kind of a novelty song.
- 5:00SPEAKER_05: I wonder what that's about.
- 5:03SPEAKER_05: And I wrote that was kind of neat, and I started playing it around, you know, in the parties before long.
- 5:07SPEAKER_05: Everybody get together and hand me the guitar and I'd play it, and it's kind of neat.
- 5:11SPEAKER_05: And that kind of kicked off the songwriting stuff.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: Did are you are you trying to tell me you're an exhibitionist?
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: No, not that.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Did they all want to watch you pee after you played that song?
- 5:21SPEAKER_05: Uh maybe.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: I hope not.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: I have a recording from uh and I I know you know Joel Rajaf.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Yes, uh I have a recording of his called Panty Girl.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: And I think Joel actually worked on your CD too, if I remember right.
- 5:34SPEAKER_05: Yes, he's the producer.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: Producer, your CD.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: What a he's a great guy anyway, but I'm excited to hear that.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: That's fantastic.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: But I have a recording somewhere I need to dig it out that he did uh when he when I was at Q101 for me that he played, it was called Panty Girl, and it was about his wife.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: And it's a great, great song.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's really Panty Girl.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Panty Girl, yeah.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: Hey there, Panty.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: Kind of like that.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Flying through the air, so fancy.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: That was the first thing that went through my head.
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: I just had to say it.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: No, it was kind of like he um it was just it was a tribute to his wife, and you know, you know, uh uh you you're married, right?
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 6:10SPEAKER_09: Yes.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't know if you do this, Ren.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I know you're in a relationship.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you do this, but he said his wife liked to rock around in a t-shirt and panties.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: Well, who doesn't?
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and so you know, he would get a glimpse of you know, gold is what he was saying.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it was a trivia to his idea.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: That is kind of cute, kind of like a yeah, like a rocker's love ballet about his panty girl.
- 6:38SPEAKER_05: I think that was on his Young Young C D.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Yes, I think it was.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: I think we're a young CD.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, mind.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: But anyway, I'm listening to yours.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: You have the same kind of fun, I can tell.
- 6:47SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: Uh your music I can also tell is from the heart.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: Um, so we're gonna talk a little bit about this award you have sitting here next to us as well.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: Um, but I want you wanna you want to run one out right now?
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Sure, you can play one down.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: You want me to play one from the CD?
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: What well I you want me to do a new one.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Let's do a new one.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Let's do it, because I can I probably will have time to play all of them on the CD.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Sounds good.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Let's do a new one.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: How about let's do the my brand newest one?
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, this is a new release, right?
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: This is brand new new one.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: I have full rights on this puppy, right?
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: I sure do.
- 7:21SPEAKER_09: Let me take it.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Let's get down, real quick.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: I'm getting the contract.
- 7:26SPEAKER_05: Let me give you a little background on the song.
- 7:28SPEAKER_05: It's not your uh, it's not one of your average Yahoo songs, you know.
- 7:35SPEAKER_05: I've been writing songs for a long time, and and and and some of the material that I've been getting, you know, it's been comes from everywhere.
- 7:45SPEAKER_05: It really does.
- 7:46SPEAKER_05: But lately, you know, it's been uh me getting older, I've gotten older.
- 7:52SPEAKER_05: My music seems to be more scratching at that type of surface, you know, of getting, you know, uh, you know, more mature or whatnot.
- 8:02SPEAKER_05: Something like that.
- 8:03SPEAKER_05: It's taking my picture.
- 8:06SPEAKER_05: But, anyways, uh this song, I recently had uh I had my dog die.
- 8:12SPEAKER_05: And that kind of stuff.
- 8:14SPEAKER_05: Oh, I don't remember.
- 8:14SPEAKER_05: And then right around the time I had this, we've been living in our house for 20 years and we just paid it off.
- 8:20SPEAKER_05: And we had this great big tree in the backyard that was just it was one of the best backyard trees in the whole neighborhood.
- 8:28SPEAKER_05: It was a tremendous tree, big old maple tree.
- 8:31SPEAKER_05: And it died.
- 8:32SPEAKER_09: Oh no.
- 8:33SPEAKER_05: So, anyways, with me being a songwriter, I decided to go ahead and write a little song about the situation just to try to help myself out.
- 8:44SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 8:45SPEAKER_05: It goes something like this.
- 8:46SPEAKER_05: It's called uh Under My Thumb.
- 8:50SPEAKER_05: No, no, no, it's got a thumb on me.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: Thumb on me.
- 8:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know somebody's got a thumb on you and you.
- 8:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because that's a Rolling Stones song.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't want to infringe on it.
- 9:22SPEAKER_07: My tree died both around the same time.
- 9:34SPEAKER_07: I saw it coming on, and no one belongs.
- 10:05SPEAKER_07: He was a smart dog.
- 10:12SPEAKER_07: Now they're both gone, and somehow now I see someone's got a thumb on me.
- 10:31SPEAKER_07: It must be a big a hitchin' for a right though.
- 10:35SPEAKER_07: Press a bad look down on me.
- 10:41SPEAKER_07: Well, I'm afraid to turn around.
- 10:43SPEAKER_07: There might be something there.
- 10:46SPEAKER_07: I don't wanna see someone's gotta fum on me.
- 11:11SPEAKER_07: No walks to take, no leaves to wake.
- 11:23SPEAKER_07: Was this just a big mistake?
- 11:29SPEAKER_07: I love a dog in a big old tree.
- 11:36SPEAKER_07: Someone's got a thumb on me.
- 11:43SPEAKER_07: It must be a big thumb, a hitchin' for a ride to press and battle down on me.
- 11:52SPEAKER_07: Well, I'm afraid to turn around there.
- 11:55SPEAKER_07: Something there I don't wanna see someone's gotta thumb on me.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Man, that's pretty good.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: You didn't care for your dog at all, did you?
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: Can you tell?
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: Five-time New Mexico Music Award winning songwriter, twelve-time New Mexico Music Award finalist.
- 12:40SPEAKER_05: Yes, sir.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: You took kind of a little break, didn't you?
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, last year.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: No, I didn't take no break.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: The break took me.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, well.
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: I've never heard such an accurate phrase.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: COVID.
- 12:55SPEAKER_05: Damn, COVID.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: Um in the breaks that you're probably seeing, though, those are probably the times I was spending time trying to get in Nashville.
- 13:03SPEAKER_05: I could say I went down there ten times and and it was kind of, you know, like I said, I went walking.
- 13:09SPEAKER_05: I had a door to go knock to.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: When I went to go knock on it, nobody was there.
- 13:13SPEAKER_05: It was early in the morning.
- 13:15SPEAKER_05: I didn't know Nashville didn't start till 10.
- 13:17SPEAKER_05: I was ready to go at 8.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: So when I get there, there's no one there.
- 13:22SPEAKER_05: I said, oh my gosh, I come, I got too many songs come come too far to not talk to somebody.
- 13:28SPEAKER_05: So I went literally door to door, knocking, and sometimes someone answered, more likely not.
- 13:34SPEAKER_05: But the couple that I did get answered is, What do you want?
- 13:38SPEAKER_05: You're a what?
- 13:39SPEAKER_05: And you're unsolicited, and you know, head down the road.
- 13:42SPEAKER_05: So I got out of there and uh I started getting tired and I was started getting hungry.
- 13:49SPEAKER_05: So I was going, oh my gosh, I started walking down to the NASI, Nashville Songwriters International.
- 13:55SPEAKER_05: It's a performing rights organization.
- 13:58SPEAKER_05: I was so I went in there to try to do two things, see if somebody would listen to me and get a drink of water.
- 14:04SPEAKER_05: And I walked into this big old glass building, that's huge and pretty.
- 14:07SPEAKER_05: New too.
- 14:09SPEAKER_05: There was a security guard and a lady in the front, and that was it.
- 14:12SPEAKER_05: And I walked in there and I said, Hi, I'm a songwriter from New Mexico.
- 14:17SPEAKER_05: Anybody care?
- 14:18SPEAKER_05: Anybody want to listen?
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: You know what?
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: What is that gonna take me?
- 14:20SPEAKER_05: I said, Well, no.
- 14:22SPEAKER_05: You crossed the border to get here?
- 14:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so they said, uh, what you need to do is you need to become a member.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: And I said, Well, if I become a member today, will somebody listen to my song today?
- 14:35SPEAKER_05: And she said, I can't guarantee that.
- 14:37SPEAKER_05: I said, Well, you know, it wasn't going too good.
- 14:40SPEAKER_05: But finally I asked, I said, Is there some water?
- 14:43SPEAKER_05: I can some drink.
- 14:44SPEAKER_05: I'm thirsty.
- 14:45SPEAKER_05: I was hideous at the time.
- 14:47SPEAKER_05: Our pits were sweatied, my chest.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: I was it wasn't.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: Look like the typical starving artist, didn't you?
- 14:53SPEAKER_05: Well, in June in Nashville, you know, it was already walking door to door.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: Walking door to door in my boots.
- 14:59SPEAKER_05: I started, I even cut my my legs from the pipe of the boots, the shaft.
- 15:03SPEAKER_05: It was it started to sting.
- 15:06SPEAKER_05: But um, when I I asked for some water for the felon, they said, no, you need I think they thought I was homeless.
- 15:13SPEAKER_05: I really do.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: I think they thought I was homeless and just had my guitar.
- 15:17SPEAKER_05: They didn't, they didn't care about my story at all.
- 15:19SPEAKER_05: So when I left, uh, I kind of sensed, you know, can I get some water?
- 15:24SPEAKER_05: And they said, No, you need to get going.
- 15:27SPEAKER_05: And I said, You don't have a break room or something?
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: Water?
- 15:31SPEAKER_05: I need some water.
- 15:32SPEAKER_05: They said, No, you need to get going.
- 15:34SPEAKER_05: And I said, Well, do you got a hose I can suck water out of the back or anything?
- 15:38SPEAKER_05: I said, Man, this is ridiculous.
- 15:40SPEAKER_05: I just walked out of there a little mad.
- 15:41SPEAKER_05: And I just kept walking and I can feel the blood.
- 15:45SPEAKER_05: Just kept walking.
- 15:46SPEAKER_05: The sweat was getting worse.
- 15:47SPEAKER_05: And I saw down the road, I think it was Roy Acuff Boulevard or whatever they're all named after, things like that.
- 15:54SPEAKER_05: I saw Snapple.
- 15:55SPEAKER_05: And I went, oh my gosh.
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: I started going down.
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: I went down to the place, and it was kind of cool because uh the guy who greeted me was uh Reynolds is his last name.
- 16:06SPEAKER_05: He was the bass player for the Mavericks, Trisha Yearwood's husband.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: Mark Reynolds, I think, is his name.
- 16:12SPEAKER_05: So he sees me and he says, I think I know what you're up to.
- 16:15SPEAKER_05: I think I know what you're doing.
- 16:17SPEAKER_05: And I said, Can I get some water?
- 16:18SPEAKER_05: And he said, he said, he got me, he says, I'm a half owner of this place.
- 16:22SPEAKER_05: So he got me two snapples.
- 16:24SPEAKER_05: And I drank them.
- 16:25SPEAKER_05: And you know what he did?
- 16:26SPEAKER_05: He took all my songs and he and he and he never heard from him again or nothing.
- 16:32SPEAKER_05: But I I did see him later on in the day, you know, but downtown.
- 16:35SPEAKER_05: But he saved me from he saved me from passing out, man.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: And he heard you out too.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just shoe you away.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Well, listen, I want to play, uh, let's play that.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: Uh we've got some of yours, your, your, let's, let's plug your uh C D real quick or sound, whatever they call it now.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: Uh you gave me a C D, but the soundtrack album, whatever it is.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: An EP.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: An EP, and it's in the last one that you gave me, uh, the newest one is hold on, don't tell me.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: You got it here somewhere, juice.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: Juice.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: Juice, yes.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: Juice.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: And um, and you know, I'm and and and I understand that uh Joel was uh what did you tell me?
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: You're a producer.
- 17:12SPEAKER_05: Your producer, and then you also had um I had Ted Cockenberry as my still guitar player.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: Know him.
- 17:19SPEAKER_05: I I don't know him personally, but know of him.
- 17:21SPEAKER_05: Steve Decca.
- 17:22SPEAKER_05: He was uh he's the drummer for Kirk James Blues band for years.
- 17:25SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 17:26SPEAKER_05: Um I know Kirk real well.
- 17:28SPEAKER_05: Kirk, yeah.
- 17:29SPEAKER_05: Uh Kirk was my graphics guy.
- 17:31SPEAKER_05: If you noticed, he did uh the he did the surprise.
- 17:34SPEAKER_05: He did all the graphics off the CD.
- 17:36SPEAKER_05: And uh Doug Eagle, he was uh our engineer and our uh you know.
- 17:41SPEAKER_05: He's the one that has the studio, right?
- 17:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's the one who's got the sound.
- 17:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and Joe was you know playing a stand-up bass.
- 17:47SPEAKER_05: Joe was the hardest working guy on the on the CD.
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: He did start stand-up bass, you know, as he does for the Bar Bardie Wranglers every night.
- 17:55SPEAKER_05: And he also got on Defender Jaguar, too, most of the all the songs in the Jaguar Joe.
- 18:00SPEAKER_05: So uh I had the Beatles, I had the Four Corners Beatles on that CD, so I was very proud of Joe.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that does make it sound a little bit more prestigious.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, I remember Joel, it was Joey and the Slackers.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he played uh, I don't remember the guy he played with, Robert Robert Ernest.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: Ernest, and uh was it Robert that played the stand-up bass?
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: It was, and then Joel played guitar, yeah.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we we we have a talented bunch of folks here, uh very unappreciated, I think.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I anytime I can give somebody a plug like this, and I'm and I'm sorry we waited so long to get you on here.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's all Ren's fault.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: It is, yeah.
- 18:39SPEAKER_03: I never even met you, but I was like, I don't want him on the show.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: I thought you were gonna hit me with the bat.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: I gave you a bat.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: I should have got the bat.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: It's over, it's too far away.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: Well, listen, I want you to find that uh I think it's New Mexico is the name of that.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: New Mexico?
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a title track.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: What's give us a little story about that?
- 18:57SPEAKER_05: That's a neat little story.
- 18:58SPEAKER_05: When I was in Red Lodge, I think my, you know, I've been down there three out of the last four years.
- 19:04SPEAKER_05: The one of the years when I got back, you get so pumped up from working with these guys, David.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: It's just amazing.
- 19:11SPEAKER_05: The adrenaline seems to be even after the drive.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: So I got home and got in my little office that I called, my Green Chili Records and my board, and I sat down, and and what came to my mind was I left Casper, Wyoming at 4 30 this morning.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: That stuck, and I kind of went because that was the truth.
- 19:29SPEAKER_05: I said, you know, I couldn't sleep.
- 19:31SPEAKER_05: I was staying at some friend's house, and I said, Man, I it's been a long weekend, I won't go home.
- 19:35SPEAKER_05: And I told him, I said, if I can't sleep, I'm gonna get up and go.
- 19:38SPEAKER_05: And when I looked at the clock, it was 4 30 in the morning.
- 19:41SPEAKER_05: And uh that song, too, was uh it was it's it's the drive coming home.
- 19:46SPEAKER_05: If I listen to you, you'll see you'll you'll you'll you'll uh you'll know the story just by the drive coming home.
- 19:51SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 19:52SPEAKER_05: That's cool.
- 19:52SPEAKER_05: Thank you for playing it.
- 19:53SPEAKER_05: Oh, you betcha.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: Of course.
- 19:54SPEAKER_05: Did you hear the train?
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: I did.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: That was an accident at first, right?
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you a story about Buddy Holly and the crickets when we get done.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, thank you.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: It's barely, but you can hear it.
- 20:12SPEAKER_07: I left Casper, Wyoming at 4:30 this morning.
- 20:20SPEAKER_07: I've been up in Montana with me and Savannah, stinking road songs all day.
- 20:32SPEAKER_07: But I've had my pill, it's time for me to go.
- 20:36SPEAKER_07: Savannah seems pretty, but I need to come up with a new Mexico Mexico Mexico race, my kids.
- 20:52SPEAKER_07: New Mexico's the place, God's like down it's great.

- 22:16SPEAKER_07: So slow.
- 22:18SPEAKER_07: Up and down a turn.
- 22:20SPEAKER_07: Carefully with the turn on my way to New Mexico.
- 22:26SPEAKER_07: Up let us do the during the train.
- 22:31SPEAKER_07: 505, just hide away.
- 22:35SPEAKER_07: I'm out my way to New Mexico.

- 22:43SPEAKER_07: New Mexico's the great.
- 22:46SPEAKER_07: Gotta great.
- 22:50SPEAKER_07: I'm out my way to New Mexico.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: Give me voy, ándale, ándale.
- 22:57SPEAKER_04: Quítate de medio, ándale, ándale.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: I like that song a lot.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: I also uh we're only gonna get probably have time.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: We've got about eight minutes left in this segment, but I I I I also probably I I either want to hear it on the uh on the CD or I want to hear on the soundtrack or I want to hear uh you play it.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: And can you guess which one it is?
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: Take a wild guess.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: It's off your new CD.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: Take the wild guess?
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: No, take a wild guess.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: It's off the new CD?
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: That would have been a good name, though.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: Take a but it's not the New Mexico song.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: No, we just played that one.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: It I I will tell you, it was voted 2021's best western song.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: Which one?
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: Which one is that?
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: It's a dog gone shame.
- 23:57SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: You want to do it live or would you rather them hear it on these.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: Let's play it.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: Let's let him play it live.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: I I just, yeah, let's let me let's play it live and then we'll see how much time we got left.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Okay?
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: Now try to behave yourself.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: Because it's a doggone shame.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: Doggone shame.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: Doggonshane.
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: I've never heard of a better country.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: It's all you, man.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: Let me tell you a little bit about the fantastic.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: Okay?
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: Shut up, Peter.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 24:30SPEAKER_05: No, I'm curious.
- 24:31SPEAKER_05: I was writing a song uh on my board in my little office at the Green Chile Records.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: And uh when I went to the Red Lodge my first year there, they had me uh, they actually paired us with another in the master class to write a song, and they wanted you to come up with the pretty much the song that day.
- 24:52SPEAKER_05: You know, the next day, have it ready to go.
- 24:55SPEAKER_05: But you know, they weren't they weren't gonna you know force it, but they wanted a they wanted a couple of verses in the chorus, you know, out of you.
- 25:02SPEAKER_05: And the girl that they partnered me up, she was a freshman in college, and she'd never written a song before, and she was sitting in our circle, and we all passed the guitar around to sing your song you know in front of everybody in the country, which was kind of neat, you know, talking about intimidating, sitting around with that group, and everybody's playing a song, you know.
- 25:25SPEAKER_05: No mics, no nothing, just like this.
- 25:27SPEAKER_05: But uh, anyways, the girl, she um she was a piano player, and so we didn't she could we could just pass the piano around, but there was a piano in the Roman theater over there in the back there by the popcorn machine.
- 25:42SPEAKER_05: And uh so they paired us together, and we said we could work together here, you know, with the piano and stuff.
- 25:49SPEAKER_05: And she said, Well, do you got an idea?
- 25:50SPEAKER_05: So, anyways, I I'm I'm taking off on what I wanted to do, but while I was working on that song that her and I were working on in Red Lodge, and I wanted to finish it so she would have a song in her hat that I wrote she could put down, you know.
- 26:04SPEAKER_05: I wrote a song, so I wanted to make sure she got that and stuff.
- 26:08SPEAKER_05: But while I was writing that song with her by myself, I looked on my board and I said, This is part of my clutters that I put, you know, to kind of try to help me write a song.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: Can't cowboy no more.
- 26:18SPEAKER_05: I kind of went, Can't cowboy no more?
- 26:21SPEAKER_05: Well hell, that's a damn song right there.
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: That song that beginning right there ended up winning me the Western song of the year.
- 26:28SPEAKER_05: So here goes something like this.
- 26:31SPEAKER_07: Can't cowboy no more, can't saddle my horse, can't ride the range, it's a dog on shame, can't pull on my boots, misplaced my spurs, no one to blame, it's a dog on shame.
- 26:59SPEAKER_07: What's a man to do when his hair turns gray and a pretty lady won't look his way?
- 27:13SPEAKER_07: It's getting older, it's no good on me, it's a young man's game, it's a joke on shame, can't less on my rope, can't corral my herd, can't shoulder the pain, it's a dog on shame, may have to sell my ranch, move to another state, and no more John Wayne it's a dog on shame.
- 28:07SPEAKER_07: What's a man to do when his hair turns gray and the pretty ladies no longer look his way?
- 28:21SPEAKER_07: It's getting older, it's no good on me.
- 28:27SPEAKER_07: It's a young man's game, it's a doggone shame, and no more John Way, it's a doggone shame.
- 29:33SPEAKER_06: I see you.
- 29:37SPEAKER_07: Do you see me holding hands and watching TV and rubbing up clothes so I can feel you breathe?
- 29:56SPEAKER_07: Let's put the pillows on the floor.
- 30:01SPEAKER_07: We don't need them anymore.
- 30:05SPEAKER_07: Slide up here by me so I can feel you bleed, I can hold you forever and a day so babe.
- 30:37SPEAKER_06: I see you.
- 30:41SPEAKER_06: Do you see me?
- 30:45SPEAKER_07: Cutting cake, turning 90, dancing real clothes, so I can feel free.
- 31:01SPEAKER_07: We'll have some kids and a dog named Marley.
- 31:04SPEAKER_07: We'll ride the highway on a Harley Settled up towel be so I can free.
- 31:18SPEAKER_07: Let me hold you whatever in a day.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: So we was a DJ, I hated those false endings, just so that you know.
- 31:47SPEAKER_02: A lot of times, I don't know, did you ever do that?
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Just play the next song and oh oops.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: Yes, 100%.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: I totally.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: So DJs, I'm sure, I'm surprised nobody's ever said that to you.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: DJs have they hate that false ending.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: Especially when I was a false ending.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Well, you go, it goes brmm, and then it starts when you end it, just end it.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: Though I don't know.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: I kind of like the chaos of it.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: Keeps well keeps me on my toes.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: I don't need to be any younger.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: There's a song right there.
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: I don't need to be any younger.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: We should collaborate on the other side.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: I'm not kidding you.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: I really like that.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: There's a song there.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: I hear it.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: What was it again?
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: Don't need to be any younger.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: We haven't we haven't recorded.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: You heard it here, folks.
- 32:37SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 32:37SPEAKER_02: I'm going to collaborate on a song.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: Don't leave the beauty.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: Dave, I'm writing up the contract so you'll get royalties.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: I love you, Ren.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: And I'll split them with you.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: Because you're, you know.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: I wrote up the contract.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: I'll don't worry, I'll write myself into it.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: I get at least 50%.
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: The other 50% goes to them.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Goes to the rest of the team.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: You're only receiving it in like, you know, taxation forms.
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: You're not going to see any of the actual money.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: A couple of pennies, that's all I want.
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: Just I tell you what, better than that.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: Throw me a bone every once in a while, I'll be a happy camper.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: But I want credit, and you when you when you when you do your CD, I want credit.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: Well, heck of that.
- 33:16SPEAKER_05: Thought of by David Mills.
- 33:18SPEAKER_05: If you were the C if that was the title and everything, you would advise you.
- 33:22SPEAKER_05: You would get credit.
- 33:23SPEAKER_05: I think they give it, you know, it's you know, I read a book of uh Let me get a hold of BMI.
- 33:29SPEAKER_05: Oh, what's his name?
- 33:30SPEAKER_05: Uh Bobby Braddock.
- 33:32SPEAKER_05: He wrote uh oh, he wrote them great songs he wrote.
- 33:42SPEAKER_05: Sister Crash.
- 33:44SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 33:45SPEAKER_05: He wrote that and he also wrote He said I'll love you till I die.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: That's Bobby Braddock anyway.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: Oh who who but who recorded that song?
- 33:56SPEAKER_05: George Jones, yeah.
- 33:58SPEAKER_05: But the other one was uh uh uh Crazy Lawrence.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: I I I've heard George Jones' version of that.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: And I bet I like that one too.
- 34:08SPEAKER_05: But he he was he's uh he's uh that Bobby Braddock had a lot of stories in that book that I read too, and it was just uh and and right there, if you got like a like the title, you're like a uh eighth percent or something.
- 34:22SPEAKER_05: But you would.
- 34:23SPEAKER_05: It was yeah, if you wrote like a chorus, you'd get a percent.
- 34:27SPEAKER_05: It was it's kind of broke down that much.
- 34:29SPEAKER_05: I couldn't believe it.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: Well, do you have any of your stuff online that they can download?
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: You have a sort of everything, oh on Spotify.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: On Spotify, oh I'll see, I could have taken it to Spotify.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: The thing about that is uh we we we are on Amazon Prime too, the show is uh, and eventually, I'm it's my understanding that every time somebody downloads or listens to it, that uh Ren and I get one hundredth of a cent.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: Well, it's I don't know, it's something that's where all those hundredth of cents have been rolling in from.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: Did you get a check on it?
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: I did, I got 0.002 cents.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: No.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: Just kidding.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: I'm so kidding.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: But um, so do have you seen any royalties from any of that stuff yet?
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: No, I haven't gotten it.
- 35:17SPEAKER_05: Well, uh, well, uh I haven't.
- 35:19SPEAKER_05: I've been waiting.
- 35:19SPEAKER_05: I haven't checked my bank yet.
- 35:21SPEAKER_05: Matter of fact, we uh You know you can do that on your phone now.
- 35:26SPEAKER_05: Yes, you can do that on your phone.
- 35:27SPEAKER_05: I haven't did that, but I'm uh well, what happened was we got myself on the Spotify and on all of them.
- 35:34SPEAKER_05: And then all of a sudden I kind of realized what, well, how do I check?
- 35:37SPEAKER_05: I went and said, How did I check to see if anybody's bought anything?
- 35:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:41SPEAKER_05: So I got with my daughter and she says, Well, we haven't signed you up, Dad.
- 35:44SPEAKER_05: What do you mean?
- 35:45SPEAKER_05: So then I had to go do, you know, like my income tax stuff.
- 35:48SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 35:49SPEAKER_05: It had to be all income tax stuff.
- 35:51SPEAKER_05: So I'm I might get me my check.
- 35:53SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 35:53SPEAKER_05: I think 90 cents a song and eight dollars a CD or something.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: That's not bad.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: We need to record us, we need to get that song done.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: You you bet, yeah.
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: Let's just do an album of like cash-in novelty songs.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: Ru and I are working on a song.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: Eric's helping us right, Eric Campbell's helping us write it.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, we're gonna have a good song.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: Maybe we'll have well, maybe we'll commission you to play on there too for us.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: So we'll just get a big fanfi deal going.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we'll pull all of the favors we've been collecting.
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: All right, so here's what I'm gonna do.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna ask, first of all, I want to talk about this beautiful award you have sitting here.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: I'm sure that's on this list that I've already talked about.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: The latest.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: I want to get a picture of that.
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: My little photographer, just that award.
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: Um, so uh matter of fact, we'll have him hold it up so you can uh take a picture with him with it.
- 36:43SPEAKER_05: Not just my dear, is that good?
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: Tell him his hair looks pretty.
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: But we'll get that posted on Facebook too.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: I want to talk about that award as soon as she gets done.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: Um but I and I know that's probably on these right here.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure which one though.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: Is that uh one more deer?
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: Is that what's that is that the rising star?
- 37:10SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: Dog on shame.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: He'll break your shame.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he'll break your camera.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Never heard that before.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: He'll break your camera.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: It says it on the trophy, it says dog on shame.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, for doggone shame.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, so that's the best western song.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: That's what you got that for?
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: Man, that is so cool.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: And I so I'm so glad that you played that one live.
- 37:36SPEAKER_05: Yes, I did.
- 37:37SPEAKER_05: Thank you for asking me to play it.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: Oh well, I I I that's what I have you here for.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: And here's what I want to do now.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: I mean, we're we're we're good on time, but um what's if you were gonna sit down and play me a song, okay?
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: Oh, wait, hold on.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: Here's what I need.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: If you were gonna sit down and play a young lady a song to to woo her.
- 38:01unknown: Okay.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: To woo her.
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: To woo her.
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: Now I'm gonna use this, so what would you what would you play?
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: I want you to play it right now and put you right on your To woo her.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry if I look serious.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: It's because I like the prompt and I'm thinking about it.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: I'm like, hmm, what would I play?
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a difficult task.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: I got one.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Okay, lay it on us, man.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: We're ready.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: Ren is all over it.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: It's a difficult task.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: Thanks a lot, Ren.
- 38:31SPEAKER_05: This is another song I think I wrote coming back.
- 38:33SPEAKER_05: Actually, I was uh writing this song, working on the song, and I got to Montana for the very first time down in Red Lodge.
- 38:41SPEAKER_05: And it rained for two straight days, and I was like, what the heck?
- 38:45SPEAKER_05: This is this is it kind of felt still like winter, and it was in June, end of June.
- 38:49SPEAKER_05: So it rained the whole time, or first two of the days, and um I said, Okay, Montana rain.
- 38:57SPEAKER_05: And I kind of went, what's going on here?
- 38:59SPEAKER_05: And I kind of kind of did something, and it kind of worked with what I was working on.
- 39:03SPEAKER_05: So you don't ever erase, you don't ever throw away, uh yes, put them back in that file.
- 39:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, actually.
- 39:13SPEAKER_05: This is the woo song.
- 39:14SPEAKER_05: Let me see if I can pull this out.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: This is this is the woo song.
- 39:18SPEAKER_02: He's too glassy for that, man.
- 39:19SPEAKER_03: This is the woo-in song.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: Okay, it's called She Look Lonely Today.
- 39:23SPEAKER_07: Oh She look lonely today in this early montana.
- 39:45SPEAKER_07: What the hell do I know?
- 39:49SPEAKER_07: It's just a thought for a long way.
- 39:55SPEAKER_07: I see her there most of the day.
- 40:01SPEAKER_07: She always makes time say a pretty smiles and a warm.
- 40:11SPEAKER_07: She looked lonely today.
- 40:16SPEAKER_07: She didn't even look my way.
- 40:21SPEAKER_07: And the day I had something to say.
- 40:26SPEAKER_07: Damn this mountain rain.
- 40:30SPEAKER_07: She looked lonely today.
- 41:00SPEAKER_07: I need her love, that's what I was gonna say.
- 41:06SPEAKER_07: Damn, this much needed rain.
- 41:10SPEAKER_07: She looked lonely today.
- 41:15SPEAKER_07: She looked lonely today in this early month and rain.
- 41:25SPEAKER_07: What the hell do I know?
- 41:30SPEAKER_07: Just a thought for a long way.
- 41:35SPEAKER_07: What the hell do I know?
- 41:41SPEAKER_07: Just a thought for a long way.
- 42:28SPEAKER_07: Left without a trace, and nowhere from all the twist.
- 42:38SPEAKER_07: Love help me vape.
- 42:42SPEAKER_08: All I do is cry.
- 42:50SPEAKER_07: It's not true.
- 42:54SPEAKER_07: I could die.
- 43:07SPEAKER_07: Love her.
- 43:11unknown: Love a little bit.
- 44:02SPEAKER_07: Love her me, but it's not a good one.
- 44:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he didn't think that was gonna happen and oh man he that that growl was Joel Ratcher?
- 44:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: Roy Orbis and Louis.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna have to work on that one.
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: Um you know we were talking earlier, speaking of that, about uh you said uh the train, you could hear the train in one of your songs.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: So what was the deal with that?
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: What happened?
- 45:12SPEAKER_05: The train?
- 45:13SPEAKER_05: I just wanted to put it on.
- 45:14SPEAKER_05: I seen that dog going, yeah, I wanted to put it in.
- 45:17SPEAKER_05: I seen that train coming down, and I went, woo woo, you know how it made that dingle ling ling.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: So you so you just added it later.
- 45:23SPEAKER_02: We added it in.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: Well, I can tell you that, and you may know this story, but Buddy Cricket, Buddy Holly, and the crickets, when they they recorded in where was it?
- 45:32SPEAKER_02: Lubbock, somewhere out outside of Texas, and there were uh the crickets were chirping so loud that it came through.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: That's where he got the name for the crickets was the the crickets chirping outside.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: He said, Oh, let's leave that in there.
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: It's cool.
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: Yes, yeah.
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: And I don't remember which song it was on.
- 45:46SPEAKER_03: Do you no, but it sounds familiar.
- 45:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think it was on the Buddy Hawley story movie, as a matter of fact.
- 45:52SPEAKER_05: It could have been.
- 45:55SPEAKER_05: Could have been.
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: Well, um, all right, so we already covered what your favorite song was.
- 45:59SPEAKER_02: What was that?
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: I said we were gonna talk about something.
- 46:01SPEAKER_02: Oh, I got it written down here.
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: Costus?
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: What the hell?
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: Costus.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: Do you know Costus?
- 46:06SPEAKER_05: Costus?
- 46:06SPEAKER_05: You guys heard Costus?
- 46:08SPEAKER_05: Google it.
- 46:10SPEAKER_05: Well, I don't know what it is.
- 46:12SPEAKER_05: He's uh he's a I'll just uh I'll just I'll just cut to the chase.
- 46:15SPEAKER_05: He's a Hall of Fame songwriter in Nashville.
- 46:18SPEAKER_05: He's just amazing.
- 46:19SPEAKER_05: He's written songs.
- 46:20SPEAKER_05: Uh uh Dwight Yoakum ain't that lonely yet.
- 46:23SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's he's he's the Mavericks.
- 46:26SPEAKER_05: That whole Mavericks, the very first Mavericks.
- 46:28SPEAKER_05: I remember the Mavericks.
- 46:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: Seven of the songs on that were cost a song.
- 46:34SPEAKER_05: He's a badass, in other words.
- 46:36SPEAKER_05: So going back into my years in Durango over there at the Songwriter Expo, I was in a tape listening session, and he was the Nashville guy.
- 46:45SPEAKER_05: And it was Greg Dorschall, he was from uh Sony Tree Publishing at the time.
- 46:48SPEAKER_05: They were the two people, and you submit your tape, and they play it, and they'll listen to it, and then they'll stop it, and then they'll go ahead and give you some feedback on it.
- 47:00SPEAKER_05: So we did one, and I did uh one of the songs that that I had written.
- 47:05SPEAKER_05: Um called Slick Roads, a matter of fact, and I played it.
- 47:09SPEAKER_05: And uh they were gonna stop it, right?
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: And he said no.
- 47:13SPEAKER_05: He did his hand like that.
- 47:14SPEAKER_05: And that alone and the whole group, there's about 20 of us, maybe 15 to 20, in the little rooms that they have, other songwriters and stuff.
- 47:22SPEAKER_05: But he did it like I don't that just could so the song continued to play.
- 47:26SPEAKER_05: And then after it played, Costa says, Can I can I be first?
- 47:31SPEAKER_05: And Greg Dorschul, he says, Yeah, you do whatever you want, Costas.
- 47:34SPEAKER_05: You're the you're the guy, you're the all the way.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: Of course, anything for you, Costas.
- 47:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Costas, you do it.
- 47:39SPEAKER_05: Do we need do you need coffee, Costa?
- 47:41SPEAKER_05: So Costas he says, uh, uh, where's Gabriel Lucero at?
- 47:45SPEAKER_05: And I always sat in the back.
- 47:47SPEAKER_05: I said, I'm back here, Costas.
- 47:49SPEAKER_05: And he says, he looked and he says, I I I like your song.
- 47:53SPEAKER_05: And I said, You do?
- 47:54SPEAKER_05: And he said, Yeah, and he said, I like what you and he started telling me a little bit, a little bit.
- 47:58SPEAKER_05: And I and I and I I felt warm with that.
- 48:01SPEAKER_05: I thought that was pretty cool.
- 48:02SPEAKER_05: And then about with about with about 30 minutes later, I found him at the bar because the sessions were over.
- 48:09SPEAKER_05: I found him at the bar.
- 48:10SPEAKER_05: He had a I had a beer, he had a drink, and we talked.
- 48:13SPEAKER_05: And he gave me his time.
- 48:16SPEAKER_05: I'll never forget that.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, sure.
- 48:20SPEAKER_03: A cool dude through and through.
- 48:23SPEAKER_05: With that, some people get motivated to do stuff.
- 48:27SPEAKER_05: Well, when I when I talked, I said, This is this could be me, could it?
- 48:32SPEAKER_05: You know, I asked myself, could that be me?
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: Time goes by, and I'm going to Nashville and still recording and writing stuff and still being productive, but it just wasn't, you know, nothing's going on, nothing's really happening too much.
- 48:51SPEAKER_05: So I decided, and it was getting expensive.
- 48:53SPEAKER_05: Every time I went, it seemed like I was spending$5,000.
- 48:57SPEAKER_05: And I kind of went, this is just so what can I do?
- 49:00SPEAKER_05: I Googled Costas.
- 49:03SPEAKER_05: I found in the Montana.
- 49:06SPEAKER_05: That's why I went to Red Lodge.
- 49:08SPEAKER_05: And uh this picture.
- 49:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 49:12SPEAKER_05: So I found Costas down in Red Lodge, and you know, I got to talk to him again.
- 49:18SPEAKER_05: He's got me going again.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: Go Costas.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: So this was uh well, this was this year then, June of this year.
- 49:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:26SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 49:27SPEAKER_05: Well, I just got that uh now uh at the uh in the first of the year.
- 49:31SPEAKER_05: They sent that to me.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: What a happy group of people, too.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: Very I'd love to hear any song any of you.
- 49:43SPEAKER_03: They just hide it well.
- 49:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:45SPEAKER_02: So I don't I don't know.
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: That's pretty freaking cool.
- 49:48SPEAKER_02: I can play you a song.
- 49:50SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, uh, we're not a music program.
- 49:52SPEAKER_02: I don't know if we're gonna be able to do it.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: Oh, do we have the time?
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: You know, get to me.
- 49:57SPEAKER_05: What length of time?
- 49:58SPEAKER_05: Getting to meet Costas and stuff uh was a big thing.
- 50:02SPEAKER_05: Oh, I he exchanged, we exchanged uh emails and stuff, and and I asked him, you know, if I could send him some songs, if he could.
- 50:10SPEAKER_05: He said, he said, you can.
- 50:12SPEAKER_05: But let's do it like this.
- 50:14SPEAKER_05: He said, I I need, you know, I remember the face.
- 50:17SPEAKER_05: You know, it didn't happen just overnight.
- 50:19SPEAKER_05: You know, he didn't remember me.
- 50:21SPEAKER_05: But the three years that I've gotten, he's there every year.
- 50:24SPEAKER_05: So we've gotten to, you know, he knows me.
- 50:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we got to hook up.
- 50:28SPEAKER_05: And he told me, he says, uh uh when I got to Red Lodge this next time, he he he I got a I'm on the phone, email from Costas.
- 50:39SPEAKER_05: Did you make your Twitter painted?
- 50:43SPEAKER_09: I mean, can you blame him?
- 50:44SPEAKER_05: It's Costa.
- 50:46SPEAKER_05: Costus is seeing if I'm here.
- 50:48SPEAKER_05: I said, I know what to do right away.
- 50:49SPEAKER_05: I just got out because like I said, Red Lodge is a small town, no red lights, just bar after bar, and it's just real cool.
- 50:56SPEAKER_05: I go down and there's a kind of place.
- 50:58SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 50:59SPEAKER_05: I find Costas and he gives me a hug.
- 51:01SPEAKER_05: He says, We hear, okay.
- 51:02SPEAKER_05: This was the day, the first day, Thursday, and we got Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
- 51:07SPEAKER_05: Nothing but shows.
- 51:08SPEAKER_05: I did three shows in two days.
- 51:10SPEAKER_05: Um packed houses over there, it's just amazing that you that you do.
- 51:15SPEAKER_05: But uh Costas, he's kind of gave me a little bit, you know, rules and said, I want you to do it.
- 51:20SPEAKER_05: Uh send me a lyric sheet and and and you know, a song.
- 51:25SPEAKER_05: Don't just send it to me like, you know, don't worry.
- 51:29SPEAKER_05: So uh I sent them this song I want to do for you.
- 51:32SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 51:33SPEAKER_05: And uh this song is about this song goes out to everybody's dads who used to wear the Tony Lama boots.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: I used to sell Tony Llama boots.
- 51:47SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 51:49SPEAKER_07: Goes like this.
- 51:52SPEAKER_07: His room smelt of leather and the cowboy boots he wore, he bought in El Paso at the factory outlet store, he's gotta resist old turns somber, he's got a cold forty-five, he was married to my mama to the day.

- 54:23SPEAKER_07: He was my dad.
- 54:27SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna miss him in all those times we had his room, smelled of leather from the Tony Llamas he woke, he bought in El Paso at the factory outlet snow.
- 55:01SPEAKER_07: He was my evil, he was my dad, I'm gonna miss him in all those times we had summers of baseball football in the fall hunting and fishing and fellin' ten feet tall his room smelt leather.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: Oh you know that really that brings back things.
- 55:50SPEAKER_02: I used to sell Tony I worked for Kilroy's.
- 55:52SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you remember Kilroy's, but I yeah Istor Barella?
- 55:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh uh Astra that was my Mexican mama.
- 55:59SPEAKER_02: That was mine absolutely oh my gosh, yeah.
- 56:04SPEAKER_02: Um Tony Llamas.
- 56:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Tony Lama boots.
- 56:07SPEAKER_02: My and you know, I hate to say this, but you know, they were they had exotic leather, and in those days you could buy sea turtles, and I used to have uh sea turtle boots until I found out how you're illegal.
- 56:21SPEAKER_02: I mean it is now, but it wasn't in those days.
- 56:24SPEAKER_02: So you were working down here somewhere.
- 56:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Kilroy's is right over here across on Broadway, yeah.
- 56:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, with Esther and Esther, and there was Annie Cordova and um golly, uh Dorothy.
- 56:35SPEAKER_02: I don't remember Dorothy's last name.
- 56:37SPEAKER_02: Graham was the assistant manager, and Maynard Eckholm was my boss.
- 56:41SPEAKER_02: I manage Kilroy stores too.
- 56:43SPEAKER_02: So Kilroy?
- 56:44SPEAKER_02: Kilroy.
- 56:45SPEAKER_03: Kilroy was here?
- 56:46SPEAKER_03: Yes, he was.
- 56:48SPEAKER_02: Well, he wasn't, but his store was.
- 56:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 56:52SPEAKER_02: You guys had a horse in front of the store, didn't you?
- 56:55SPEAKER_02: No, that was Dan's boots and saddles.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they were the competitor.
- 56:59SPEAKER_02: They were just down the road.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: I remember the horse.
- 57:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:02SPEAKER_02: Hey, well, listen, here's the deal.
- 57:03SPEAKER_02: We're about out of time.
- 57:04SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 57:05SPEAKER_02: And I'd like to give the last few seconds to to the artist to say whatever, any message, anything.
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: Uh hi, mom.
- 57:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, I, you know, uh, and I know that Ken's gonna want to know why you didn't say hi, dad, but um, and that's an inside joke.
- 57:19SPEAKER_02: I have to listen to Mail Encounters to understand.
- 57:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, actually, it was on this show that he did it.
- 57:23SPEAKER_03: I think, yeah, we talked about it.
- 57:25SPEAKER_03: Well, and I will say, he did sing a whole song about his dad.
- 57:28SPEAKER_02: He did, okay.
- 57:28SPEAKER_02: So he didn't know.
- 57:29SPEAKER_03: So he did forget to say that.
- 57:32SPEAKER_05: Thank you, my boy.
- 57:33SPEAKER_02: But yeah, anything, you know, I want to get your word out.

- 58:04SPEAKER_05: It hasn't been easy.
- 58:05SPEAKER_05: I've you can look it through over the years.
- 58:07SPEAKER_05: I almost have a career, not having a career.
- 58:09SPEAKER_05: It sort of seems like I can relate to that.
- 58:11SPEAKER_05: But uh I'm out there, you know, trying to get it.
- 58:14SPEAKER_05: You know, hopefully maybe in uh uh the Rocky Mountain songwriters, there's three festivals.
- 58:20SPEAKER_05: There's the Red Lodge Festival, there's the White Fish Festival, and there's the new Yellow Stone uh festival.
- 58:28SPEAKER_05: So if I get my fingers crossed, maybe they'll invite me to any one of those.
- 58:32SPEAKER_05: It'd be neat to do a summer gig in the festivals like that.
- 58:35SPEAKER_05: It's just amazing.
- 58:37SPEAKER_05: Uh, you actually get paid too, so that's kind of neat.
