- 0:02I'm Millory Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:05Trent and Ken with you until 2:00.
- 0:08A lot of folks been calling during the break wanting on the
- 0:10show we're going to. We got nothing planned after
- 0:13Bill Seals. You want to chime in and you can
- 0:15wait until 1:30 or thereabouts. We would be happy to hear from
- 0:19you at that time as we got nothing until Trent's plays of
- 0:22the day and there are not a lot of games tonight.
- 0:25How did you do betting wise this weekend?
- 0:27Saturday was OK, the Thursday, Friday was really good.
- 0:31Yesterday was a disaster. I got pummeled.
- 0:33About the only thing I got right was Iowa.
- 0:35That was one in. I got a live line.
- 0:37Iowa State, they had cut it to 12:20 to 12:00.
- 0:41I got them plus 176. I got them, but I was originally
- 0:45on Kentucky. Still with the juice made a
- 0:47little bit back. But yeah, Saturday, Sunday
- 0:49night, great. Thursday, Friday was pretty good
- 0:50overall as we're treading water. But it's OK because you know
- 0:55what, I would pay all for my gambling losses here recently to
- 0:59have what we saw now for us in this, these two chairs to get
- 1:03Iowa and Iowa State in a Sweet 16 potentially leave.
- 1:07Finally, you're on the air. And finally, maybe training
- 1:10about even more. It's unreal.
- 1:12I would gladly RIP up and light a match to the all the future
- 1:16tickets I have that don't say Iowa and Iowa State on right,
- 1:20right. Gladly do that.
- 1:22Here's Bill Seals, He's back from Saint Louis.
- 1:24When did you get home? Bill Seals, good to talk to you.
- 1:27Good to talk to you guys actually on the way as we speak
- 1:30here on the road. So navigating up through
- 1:34Southeast Iowa towards home and going to recharge for a couple
- 1:39days and head towards Chicago on Wednesday.
- 1:42Nice. I don't think that this will be
- 1:45presented to the media. Will you guys get an opportunity
- 1:48to talk to TJ or anybody tomorrow or will that have to
- 1:52wait until Wednesday? It'll be the team's arrival in
- 1:57Chicago on Wednesday at the team hotel after they get in, similar
- 2:02to what it was like in in Kansas City.
- 2:05And then just this past, well, Wednesday, yeah, Wednesday it
- 2:09was in Saint Louis. We'll get him on Wednesday in
- 2:12Chicago. So nothing, we won't know
- 2:14anything about Jefferson, whether the how the MRI turned
- 2:18out until Wednesday. Do you think that's going to be
- 2:20the case? Yeah, I, I've been in touch with
- 2:24the, the, the media contact at Iowa State and they do not
- 2:28anticipate releasing any kind of statement on his status.
- 2:33So I I think publicly we won't know until Wednesday when the
- 2:38team arrives. Good stuff.
- 2:41Well, let's talk about the game. Truly the the start couldn't
- 2:44have been any worse for Iowa State.
- 2:46What was the turn around in your mind?
- 2:48Was there one play I go back to the 90 seconds or so left in the
- 2:52first half Iowa State still down.
- 2:54I think it was 7 at the time. Manchilovich had a had a threw
- 2:58up A2 pointer didn't go battle underneath the boards.
- 3:01First of all Manchilovich gets his hands on it, then they then
- 3:06a cat got his hand. Toure eventually got it to
- 3:08Manchilovich, stepped back, He cut it to four.
- 3:11I thought that was maybe as big of a basket before halftime and
- 3:14ultimately they were going to half, what with the lead.
- 3:16But I thought that was a huge basket at the time, Bill.
- 3:20Yeah, I think it, I think it was too.
- 3:22It gave the the team already, I think the way that first half
- 3:26played out, even even with the myths there, I think they would
- 3:29have gone into the break with some semblance of confidence
- 3:32just because, you know, I I would even go back earlier than
- 3:36that. That game was kind of teetering
- 3:38on on being full-fledged disaster Allah, you know, Ole
- 3:43myths from last year in the round of 32.
- 3:47It was kind of teetering on the brink of that.
- 3:49But you know, this team really buckled down again, as we say
- 3:53every time it you know, it started on the defensive side of
- 3:57the floor. You know, Kentucky open just
- 4:00shooting so well and raining in threes.
- 4:04You know, eventually that kind of reverted to the mean and Iowa
- 4:07State, I think and picked up the defensive intensity started
- 4:11turning them over, getting getting on some some runs, you
- 4:15know, another I think a double digit run there and and you
- 4:20know, they were able to get back into the game.
- 4:22I goes 20 to 9 was the score there early on, if I, my memory
- 4:27serves me correctly, about 11 1/2 minutes, I believe it was.
- 4:32And they went on that 11 O run to draw even.
- 4:36And I think that was just so crucial because that thing
- 4:39again, it was teetering on disaster at that point.
- 4:42They were able to get that double digit run, get back, draw
- 4:45even. And then obviously the high Z3
- 4:48they they go on another run too, by the way to end the the first
- 4:52half and the high Z3 gives them the lead.
- 4:55You know, as they say, the rest is history.
- 4:56They just came out and it was a 50, I think 5133.
- 5:00The margin in the second-half just just blew him out.
- 5:04Dominant performance. We want to get the crowd
- 5:07perspective down there in Saint Louis because Kentucky travels
- 5:10as well as anybody in college basketball and Kentucky not real
- 5:13far from Saint Louis either. Initially when the game started,
- 5:16all you could really see was Cyclone Red and is like, oh boy.
- 5:19But then you heard that Kentucky crowd.
- 5:21They must have been on the other side of the court from where the
- 5:23camera was. What was the break breakdown
- 5:24percentage wise you would estimate between Cyclone and
- 5:27Wildcat fans? You know, I think that Kentucky
- 5:30actually had them outnumbered. You know, we had we had talked
- 5:34about this on on press row and I I thought maybe about 5545 ish
- 5:41range. Well, and then you sprinkle in
- 5:43the six or seven Hawkeye fans that were.
- 5:45In attendance. Too, But you know, anyway, 5545,
- 5:49I think probably Kentucky had that one.
- 5:52But I'll tell you what the Iowa State fans, they made all the
- 5:54noise and you know, even with the start that Kentucky got off
- 5:58to got off to and the the reactions from the Wildcat fans,
- 6:02I still think it's just out just dwarfed by the the Iowa State,
- 6:07you know, reaction to getting back in the game.
- 6:09And then just the the second-half.
- 6:12Many reasons to make a lot of noise.
- 6:16We've talked a ton here in the last week and a half, I guess is
- 6:19all it is. Killian Torre looks like a
- 6:22completely different guy offensively than the guy that we
- 6:25saw for, I don't know, six weeks before.
- 6:27January. February.
- 6:28Yeah, just a completely different guy.
- 6:30He's engaged, he's aggressive, he's looking for a shot at
- 6:33different times. He's not scared to take the open
- 6:35shot. What was it?
- 6:37Is there anything you can point to, anything that he answered?
- 6:40Because this guy looks completely different on that end
- 6:42of the floor. Well, I think you could probably
- 6:45trace it back to him hitting that first shot against Arizona
- 6:49in, in Kansas City. It seems like the the light came
- 6:52on with that shot, the confidence built and and you
- 6:56throughout that game, he was hunting his shot.
- 6:59It wasn't just, you know, him. Sometimes it seemed like he
- 7:03maybe settled for a, for a A3 pointer.
- 7:06You know, he would hunt his shot.
- 7:08He'd get to the elbow. It'd take that what that 15
- 7:11footer and he's not afraid to take it to the rack more.
- 7:14He's rebounding great, dishing it around.
- 7:18I think he's doing just a tremendous job right now and
- 7:21what what can't be at a better time.
- 7:23You know, he had what was it, 21 points, I think in that first
- 7:27game against Tennessee State had another solid game yesterday, a
- 7:31little bit of a scare there in the the second-half when he went
- 7:34down. He was out cold by the way, too.
- 7:39Yes, yes, he was out cold. And you know, they got him.
- 7:42They got him up, got him going to the locker room.
- 7:46You know, he goes into the tunnel.
- 7:48They they assess them real quick, regathers himself and
- 7:52he's in the huddle. They, you know, they go to like
- 7:55immediate time out there. And by the time they're playing
- 7:58again, he's back standing around the huddle.
- 8:01So just a remarkable that turn there, you know, he goes down,
- 8:05he's out cold. And it's like, my goodness, you
- 8:07know what? What else is going to happen?
- 8:09And already down a starter in Jefferson.
- 8:12But yeah, I mean, he's he's really become a factor on this
- 8:16team. And, and along with him and
- 8:18Heisi, they're going to, they're going to need him going forward.
- 8:21Yeah, that's that's for sure. By the way, you had a lot of
- 8:23FaceTime this last couple of days.
- 8:25Bill Sill, you and Hutchins and a couple of the other Iowa State
- 8:28media members right there pressed for some good FaceTime.
- 8:31So I want to ask you about Jefferson because obviously
- 8:34you're in the locker room after the after the game going back to
- 8:37what, Friday and then again yesterday.
- 8:40Was there a difference in his attitude from, you know, when it
- 8:43when it first happened to the reality that was probably not
- 8:47going to play on Sunday? And then when you talk to him
- 8:50after the game last night, did you do you sense a change as far
- 8:53as availability? Obviously you're not a trained
- 8:56medical professional by any means, but was he in a different
- 8:59frame of mind, maybe more optimistic when you spoke to him
- 9:03after last night then when he was the night of the injury?
- 9:07Probably I would say about the same, but that is Josh Joshua's
- 9:11already just a pretty mild mannered guy doesn't get real
- 9:15high, doesn't get low. I think he's excited about the
- 9:18team and and where they're at right now.
- 9:21I think if I tweeted out a picture yesterday of, of, of,
- 9:25you know, team sitting down and Josh is at the end of the bench.
- 9:28He's standing up hollering at the team, you know, rooting them
- 9:32on. He's very engaged.
- 9:33And I think he's just excited they're into this second weekend
- 9:37of the tournament. But, you know, again, he got
- 9:39that MRI at 11 AM this morning. And I can imagine those close
- 9:44around the, you know, the training staff, the coaching
- 9:46staff probably have a pretty good idea right now how his
- 9:51status is going to be for this week.
- 9:53You know, I think it is a pop positive that you know, if that
- 9:57MRI was a was a good result and they play Friday like that last
- 10:03possible time slot, I think play on Friday 9:10.
- 10:08So you know, they've got the benefit of that.
- 10:10You know, they're not playing at 11:30 AM on Thursday, it'll be
- 10:14910 on Friday. So they've got the benefit of
- 10:17that. And I think if, if the MRI bears
- 10:21good news, then they'll, you know, they'll continue that
- 10:23rehab process and you know, Josh in the world and those guys and
- 10:29they'll try and get him ready to go.
- 10:31We also I think need to mention Dom Nelson and came in against
- 10:35Tennessee State after the injury went down, gave him some good
- 10:38minutes. He was productive.
- 10:40He was engaged for a guy that just certainly has not played
- 10:42nearly as much as I'm sure he anticipated when it started.
- 10:45I mean, you go back to the beginning of the year and their
- 10:47first seven games he was playing double digit minutes.
- 10:50And then obviously we know that that change to stay engaged, to
- 10:53be a good teammate, to not sulk, I think that says a lot about
- 10:57Dom Nelson, the guy that very well could need again coming up
- 10:59this week. Yeah, he admitted that in the
- 11:03the locker room after the Tennessee State game that if he
- 11:06would have mailed it in, the results probably would not have
- 11:09been as good for him there against Tennessee State.
- 11:13Probably would have been a quick entrance and a quick exit if he
- 11:16just wasn't showing to be engaged.
- 11:19But I think he's he, you know, he stuck it out.
- 11:21Not the most ideal of circumstances, but you know what
- 11:25he he came from Utah Valley to Iowa State and he's playing in
- 11:30the NCAA tournament into the second weekend.
- 11:33He's getting playing time. I think he's given him a jolt
- 11:37off the bench, You know, And how about that effort, though,
- 11:40against Tennessee State? We were kind of, we were kind of
- 11:44chuckling that, you know, on the course of one game, he raised
- 11:48his free throw shooting percentage, 6 percentage point.
- 11:52He goes 5 for five at the line. It was up to 62%.
- 11:56So, yeah, I mean, that good, good stuff for him down in Saint
- 11:59Louis. And, you know, again, I I think
- 12:02it's it's pretty clear this Iowa State team, they're going to
- 12:05play small ball from here on out.
- 12:07I wondered maybe if it would be more Eric Mulder yesterday to
- 12:12match up more with Kentucky's size.
- 12:14But I think it's apparent this team's going to play small ball.
- 12:18So that means you're going to get more Dominic Nelson minutes
- 12:21probably than Mulder minutes at this point unless there's foul
- 12:24trouble. I think any of those big men.
- 12:26So Nelson, you know, this is not a one or A2 shot deal down in
- 12:30Saint Louis. I think they're going to need
- 12:32him this weekend in Chicago. And then they come off the bench
- 12:36and you know, there's a guy right there he can get at will.
- 12:39It seems like he can get the ball to the rack.
- 12:41And if he can knock down those free throws, that's going to be
- 12:44huge. No doubt about it.
- 12:45Well, what do you know about Tennessee?
- 12:47If you watched them play this year, obviously is was they
- 12:50meant our amant? How do you say the freshman, the
- 12:53610? Amen.
- 12:55Was he a McDonald's All American?
- 12:56And what do you know about Tennessee?
- 12:58Obviously, Gillespie is the one guy most people know on that
- 13:01roster, but what do you know about the Vols?
- 13:05You know, I don't know a whole lot right now, Kenny.
- 13:07I'll, I'll dig into that a little more.
- 13:09But yeah, I think you're right. Gillespie and Nada Mint, those
- 13:13are the two leading scorers, 18.4 for for Gillespie, you
- 13:19know, he seems to kind of be that scoring guy for them.
- 13:22He's Lipsy, you know, Nada Mint. Yes, yes, yes.
- 13:25And then Nada Mint, he's at almost 17, but you know, he's a
- 13:30stat sheet stuff and kind of guy.
- 13:33He's active on the offensive board a little, almost 6 1/2 per
- 13:38game there. This is the ball out well.
- 13:40And then you know, and as you mentioned, Gillespie, that
- 13:43Lipsy, that seems to be an app comparison there.
- 13:46But you know, a couple guys right there.
- 13:48I think for Iowa State to certainly to focus on.
- 13:51And then you just again, you saw with Tennessee, they came out,
- 13:55they shot the lights out early, kind of reverted back to the
- 13:58mean. And I think again with this
- 13:59Tennessee team, Iowa, the state will sell out to stopping a
- 14:04couple of those key guys like they tried to with away and and
- 14:07let the others beat them. They did beat them early.
- 14:11I mean, I think probably a similar story against Tennessee.
- 14:14You know who Iowa State's going to go after.
- 14:16So I think it'll be incumbent against, not some other guys to
- 14:19step up and hit some shots in that game.
- 14:22You mentioned offensive rebounding and they.
- 14:25They lead the country, right? Number one, how about this of
- 14:28misses that they have on the offensive end.
- 14:30They get 44.8% of the rebounds available.
- 14:34That is big obviously. And if Jefferson's not able to
- 14:37go, that definitely changes the equation.
- 14:38The good news, they also turned it over and it gets us Iowa
- 14:41State defense. Bill, does it feel different?
- 14:45We we've been here before, we've been to Sweet Sixteens.
- 14:47Does does this one feel different to you than some of
- 14:50the past years? Well, you know, I, I, if, if
- 14:55they have a healthy Jefferson, I would say 100% yes.
- 14:59But I just, I, I, I just, I don't know how that's going to
- 15:03going to work out. He's not going to be 100%.
- 15:05I think the rest of the way. That's a given.
- 15:07But if they can get him out there and yeah, I, I think they,
- 15:10they did against Kentucky. I, I thought that they did a
- 15:13great job rebounding the ball against them first full game
- 15:17without Jefferson. They out rebounded the Wildcats
- 15:20by one in that game. And obviously you mentioned the
- 15:23turnovers with Tennessee. They turned Kentucky over 20
- 15:28times in that game. That was the most all season.
- 15:30I think I had seen a nugget out there too.
- 15:33It was the most turnovers by Kentucky in an NCAA tournament
- 15:36game since 93. So and and they're going to
- 15:40they're going to have to I mean you you mentioned what a force
- 15:43Tennessee is on the offensive glass.
- 15:45I would imagine that probably is going to hurt Iowa State at some
- 15:49some junctures of that game on Friday.
- 15:51But if Iowa State can can again, they they're going to play small
- 15:55ball if they can get out, turn this team over, get into
- 15:58transition. I think they had 25 points off
- 16:01of those turnovers yesterday. That was a factor in that game
- 16:05and they're going to have to do it again on Friday.
- 16:07No doubt about it. And then if they do get to pass
- 16:10them, they get the winner of Alabama, Michigan, Alabama.
- 16:13They make their threes, they're probably going to advance, but
- 16:16if when they don't, they're going to get destroyed.
- 16:19They're easy. That's an easy match.
- 16:22I mean, Bill, it just seems like I don't want to get ahead of
- 16:25myself. It's a, it's a great path for
- 16:27Iowa State, Bill to get to Indianapolis.
- 16:30I mean, I I don't want to get ahead of myself, but it seems
- 16:34like it's not crazy to think like that.
- 16:37It really isn't. And even and it's it's it's
- 16:40funny that we're we're we're talking like this even with
- 16:43Jefferson status kind of being up in the air.
- 16:46But you're right. You know Michigan A-Team very
- 16:49much. Well then Jefferson hasn't been
- 16:51declared out all season yet, but you know, Michigan down.
- 16:55You said yeah, you said yeah. Do you expect that?
- 16:57Yeah, Well, I don't, I don't, I don't know.
- 17:00I think we're probably, we're going to know a lot more on
- 17:03Wednesday. I think, to be honest, we're
- 17:05going to have an idea. And if he can't go this weekend,
- 17:08you got to wonder if it's probably for good.
- 17:11But yeah, I think we'll get a better, better case scenario on
- 17:15on Wednesday on that. But yeah, I mean, again, though,
- 17:19Michigan down a down a guy. Alabama obviously down a guy as
- 17:24well. And it seems like adversity
- 17:26strikes for a lot of these teams.
- 17:28Iowa State's not exclusive in that category.
- 17:31And you know, maybe the outlook a little rosier for ISU with
- 17:36Jefferson still maybe being a possibility to go.
- 17:40Bill wanted to jump over to the women's side of things and did
- 17:43not go nearly as well as it did for the men as they fall in
- 17:46their first game against Syracuse. 89 matchup and didn't
- 17:49get their opportunity against UConn cause Syracuse got him 30
- 17:52points given up in the second quarter.
- 17:55That's rough regardless of way you put it.
- 17:57A lot of grumbling I noticed from a lot of that going on.
- 18:02I'm sure you're seated on the message board over there as
- 18:04well. Bill, take us in a little bit.
- 18:06In a disappointing end, what a lot of people believe coming
- 18:09into this year was going to be Bill Fennelly's best.
- 18:11Team up 10 preseason. They lose in the first round.
- 18:15Yeah, I mean, it just seems like the the the wheels really came
- 18:18off for for them down the stretch.
- 18:22Yeah. They were playing such good
- 18:23basketball that, you know, they get Addie Brown back.
- 18:27You think, well, this is, you know, this is really going to
- 18:29put them into that, that next, next tier, next category.
- 18:33And it didn't she didn't shoot the ball.
- 18:35Well, you know, in Iowa State just again, outside of Audie
- 18:39Crooks, just not enough consistency.
- 18:43Kenzie Hare didn't give them. I think that the the the
- 18:46production that they had hoped for for her coming off of that
- 18:50injury and they just they didn't shoot the ball well from the
- 18:52outside. And it'll Bill Fenley in his
- 18:54postgame press or afterwards. The first to admit it.
- 18:57You know, Syracuse is the team that is a simple, it's a simple
- 19:01game sometimes. And and Syracuse made its shots
- 19:06from out there. Iowa State didn't.
- 19:07They just didn't get any production outside of what Audie
- 19:11was able to give them. And and yeah, I mean, that's
- 19:14kind of the the difference in the game.
- 19:16No doubt about it, Bill Seals, cyclonereport.com,
- 19:19cyclonereport.com for all Bill Seals.
- 19:21Great work, Bill. We in all likelihood are going
- 19:24to impose on you again at some point prior to prior to tip off
- 19:28on Friday night. You'll get there on Wednesday.
- 19:31So we'll be in touch. Bill, Thanks for what you do for
- 19:34us. cyclonereport.com for Bill. Thanks, Bill. 1.
- 19:39Yeah, good to talk to you drive safe as he makes his way back
- 19:42from Saint Louis. Sounds like most of the IO state
- 19:44media stayed down there in Saint Louis.
- 19:46Probably a good idea, right? Absolutely.
- 19:48Get an extra day out of it. Yeah, have a little fun.
- 19:50Heck yeah, have a little dinner. I wanted to ask Elliot, when do
- 19:54you think or kayaker, do you think they packed for the
- 19:56weekend or packed for what night?
- 19:59I'm sure they packed what? Did their plane?
- 20:01What did their plane tickets say?
- 20:03Their returns? Would you have?
- 20:05Would you have? Gambled because of Clemson.
- 20:09That match up. I think everybody liked that
- 20:11match up, yeah. You.
- 20:12Thought you were going to be there through the weekend?
- 20:15And they were, and they've got another trip to pack.
- 20:18For and I'm sure it's a lot cheaper coming back Monday as
- 20:20opposed to Spring Breakers coming back on Sunday.
- 20:22Yes, yes, absolutely. So that's a great point.
- 20:25Yes, I'm sure ticket wise it just made a whole lot of sense
- 20:28if I will win. Why not stay another day in the
- 20:30sun? You know, the crazy thing is
- 20:32what the way this tournament is structured is we just fly right
- 20:36past and what happened with Iowa State beating Kentucky?
- 20:39What happened with Iowa? Yeah.
- 20:41On to the next we. I mean, didn't talk about
- 20:44Clemson at all. Yeah, No, we didn't.
- 20:46Didn't talk about Tennessee State at all.
- 20:48No, it just an NCAA tournament game.
- 20:51That'll be remembered because they all are.
- 20:53Sure, they're all important and there's always those moments
- 20:56that they're bigger than anything that happens during the
- 20:59regular season, really during conference tournaments.
- 21:02That is going to be a remember, that is your mantle and we just
- 21:06fly past it. But the good news is we got some
- 21:09time to stretch our wings so we can look through the whole
- 21:11tournament. Yeah, So we haven't done that
- 21:13yet. No, we.
- 21:14We'll get into that. Yeah.
- 21:15We don't have anybody else scheduled.
- 21:17So if you would like to jump aboard and grab a phone line,
- 21:20you're welcome to do that at 515-284-5966.
- 21:24If you want to pine on what you saw, Iowa, Iowa State or you're
- 21:27a you and I fan is they fall to Saint John's back on the was
- 21:31that Friday morning? No.
- 21:33Yeah. Was that the early game?
- 21:34I don't remember. So many damn games.
- 21:37Not complaining by any means. We'll take you until 2:00.
- 21:40Trent's plays of the day are still to come.
- 21:43Circus sports sponsor those. The Iowa women are underway, and
- 21:47they're in a commercial break as we speak.
- 21:48But last I saw it was tied up at 13 a piece.
- 21:53The ten seed Virginia, the two seed Iowa.
- 21:55They were in a battle. It was 13 a piece last I saw.
- 21:58So we'll get you an update on that.
- 22:00We'll take your time out. We'll come back.
- 22:01We'll continue on here. Miller and Condon glad you're
- 22:04with us on Des Moines Sports Station One O 6.3 KXNO.
- 22:18I'm Hillary Condon, welcome back 1:30 Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:22Tomorrow, Rob Doster field of 68 will join Trent and I look
- 22:25forward to that. Scott Dockerman will be a part
- 22:27of it. Doc couldn't join us today.
- 22:29He's covering the Iowa women for The Athletic and the Iowa
- 22:33Football Pro Day was today. It was, yeah.
- 22:36They had a couple of selected guys that were available.
- 22:38Kirk Ference was also supposed to have a spring press
- 22:40conference. Oh, they pushed that back.
- 22:42They move that back to next week.
- 22:43That will be so. Because of the Iowa women and
- 22:46the men still both being alive. Yep.
- 22:48So this was supposed to be a pretty eventful day for me.
- 22:51Absolutely. So we'll get we'll pick Doc's
- 22:53brain and what he saw on the the pro day, etcetera, etcetera.
- 22:57Look forward to catching up with him.
- 22:58But Rob Doster tomorrow as well. All right, let's kind of take a
- 23:01look at the tournament as a whole.
- 23:04And again, kind of the tournaments, I think it's
- 23:09changed. I'm not sure how many
- 23:13Cinderella's we'll see go and there'll be one.
- 23:15It's not like there's not going to be 1, but they're not going
- 23:18to be as plentiful I think as we as we've seen.
- 23:20By the way, there's already 2 Drake Bulldogs in the portal.
- 23:23Federico, he's decided he's out of here earlier today.
- 23:26There was one over the weekend as well.
- 23:28So that's just not a Drake thing.
- 23:30I want to be. I don't want people think that
- 23:32I'm killing Drake. It's, you know, a product of the
- 23:34system. So that that's obviously one.
- 23:37I, I thought the Nebraska Vanderbilt game was as good a
- 23:40game maybe as we've seen, other than the, you know, I have a
- 23:44Florida game for different reasons.
- 23:46But what what are your takeaways?
- 23:48And obviously the Big 10 and we should probably start right
- 23:50there. I mean, there's 16 teams live,
- 23:52six of which Big 10. The Big 10 had a great
- 23:56tournament, but in the end, does it any of it matter until they
- 24:01win a national championship? Because that's still that one.
- 24:04That they haven't got there since Michigan State 2000.
- 24:07And that's still lingers out there.
- 24:09And you go through the Big 10 and just think of the Big 10,
- 24:11the sheer volume of teams. It's not just where some
- 24:15conferences, it's a couple of teams, right?
- 24:18There's been, what, 8 teams that have played for a national
- 24:21championship? Is that right?
- 24:23It's the eight. Teams in that in that period of
- 24:25time. Since so yeah, the last quarter
- 24:27century, which is crazy to have that kind of depth.
- 24:31All right, who's played Michigan, Illinois, Michigan
- 24:34State, Wisconsin, Purdue? Do we count UCLA?
- 24:39Yeah, brought a man. I don't think they play for a
- 24:41title though, they just play do a final four.
- 24:43So that's just 5. Ohio State has.
- 24:45Indiana has way back in the day. Maryland has You count.
- 24:50You don't count their national championship either. 2005 No.
- 24:54Yeah, no, that's eighteens that have played for a title, but
- 24:58nobody's broken through. That's that's wild that you
- 25:02could have that many people. But also so many of those games
- 25:04have also been blowouts too. And I think that's probably also
- 25:07a. Good.
- 25:07The way that they the the last the taste that we were left with
- 25:11was Wisconsin maybe as disappointing A-Team as you saw
- 25:13in the in this this weekend. I thought they were playing
- 25:17while going into the tournament and had a dark, an outside
- 25:21chance to, you know, be a second weekend team.
- 25:25With Wisconsin a high point. And by the way, did you know
- 25:28anything about High Point? I did, I didn't.
- 25:31And I knew it because Huff, who is now taking over at Creighton,
- 25:33that's where he was. OK, Iowa was also involved with
- 25:36one of the. Yeah, McDermott retired today,
- 25:38by the way, made it official. Yeah, so Greg McDermott is out.
- 25:41Does that open up Jane Coon, the Storm Lake kid?
- 25:43Where did Ben McCollum grow up? Storm Lake.
- 25:46One would assume. There's been rumblings for a
- 25:48while. That message left to the game
- 25:50last night directed at him. Very well could have been but
- 25:53that aside and congratulations to coping.
- 25:56Let's take a moment here coach Mack's the guy that I've always
- 26:00really liked. I got to don't respect for him
- 26:01incredibly well at you and I. I was there starting my radio
- 26:04career in Waterloo, Cedar Falls and he.
- 26:06Was very accommodating as my guest.
- 26:08Right. He also was happy to come on.
- 26:12I got to golf with him once with my stepdad, my uncle at a golf
- 26:16tournament and I had the yips that day.
- 26:17I was popping everything up. And of course, his first line
- 26:19when he came on the radio show the next time was making fun of
- 26:22my golf game. But but a really good guy.
- 26:24He resurrected that you and I program from the doldrums.
- 26:27I mean, that was down down basketball with the Panthers and
- 26:31turned them into a perennial contender for the last 25 years
- 26:35now. But he helped start there before
- 26:37coach Jacobson took over. But an incredible career.
- 26:40It didn't work out at Iowa State.
- 26:42If Wesley Johnson wasn't tampered with, I think it would
- 26:44have. And what could have been with
- 26:47Harrison Barnes there with the possibility of Doug then,
- 26:52because if things went better, Doug would have been able to go
- 26:55and play for his dad. But things weren't going well.
- 26:57That's why Doug had to. Get out of town.
- 27:00Go to you and I, we thought, and eventually end up there at
- 27:02Creighton. But a guy that evolved, changed.
- 27:06You saw the way that they played offensively that evolved
- 27:09throughout time. Just a really, really well
- 27:12respected coach and and without Greg McDermott might not be in
- 27:16the Big East either. I mean, think of that how how
- 27:19different well, they. 'D be somewhere 'cause they
- 27:21would have, they would have probably jumped ship.
- 27:23But hard to say. Yeah, maybe hard to say where.
- 27:26One more coach since we're on that, that topic.
- 27:28Bill Self. Bill Selfstone.
- 27:30I mean, did you say here's press conference?
- 27:32Yeah. It sure seemed to me like it's
- 27:34going to be health that takes him off the sidelines.
- 27:37I think I didn't read it definitive, but I did find it
- 27:41interesting that he did put. It he's been more he, he's kind
- 27:45of been evasive and understandably so.
- 27:47In the middle of the year you're not going to say you know that
- 27:49I'm. I'm done.
- 27:51I I thought he was more open than I'd heard him before.
- 27:53It seems to me like he's probably Kansas will also be
- 27:57looking for a new head coach to talk about another guy who had a
- 28:00a ton of success in self. Yeah.
- 28:03He talked about his health and he's had some heart issues.
- 28:06He's been kept out of games. Team flew to Colorado earlier
- 28:09this year. Not if it was the altitude with
- 28:11the heart that that acted up or whatever.
- 28:13And he was hospitalized there. One point of memory serves
- 28:17didn't coach in the game, but it sure seems like Bill Self is
- 28:20probably done. McDermott has already announced
- 28:22that he's going to come to an end.
- 28:25You have to assume the North Carolina job is going to come
- 28:27open very quickly here at some point because I just don't know
- 28:31how you survive this. Are the natives restless enough
- 28:35in Kentucky that Mark Pope walks the plank?
- 28:38Because Kentucky basketball is a different animal, as you well
- 28:41know. You've got to win in Lexington.
- 28:43And getting bounced in the round of 32 in the way that they did
- 28:46it with all of those turnovers the Wildcat fans are not happy
- 28:51with with that. All right, let's take a couple
- 28:53of calls. If you would like to jump
- 28:54aboard, we'd love to have you. 515-284-5966, 515-284-5966.
- 29:02Brian's been on hold. Brian, welcome to the program.
- 29:05How are you? Good.
- 29:05How? Are you guys?
- 29:08Doing OK, Brian, what's on your mind?
- 29:11Oh, just just that that amazing Iowa game last night.
- 29:14That's I'm I'm about around Trent's age, I think, and that's
- 29:20got to be I mean, I recently bias are probably the biggest
- 29:26Iowa basketball win in my lifetime.
- 29:30And then Cooper Koch, he has been, you know what, he's just
- 29:35come alive these past few games. And last night he was so clutch
- 29:40that three he made and I'm not sure what the defender he was
- 29:44right in his face towards the end of the game.
- 29:46And then if he doesn't knock that ball out of that Florida
- 29:52guy's hands and McCollum challenged, I don't even know if
- 29:56he gets the chance to win that game.
- 29:57That's a. Great point, and it was a great
- 29:59call by McCollum, whoever was getting in his ear, to challenge
- 30:02that. Play.
- 30:03The kids name is Jace. I know that the kids name is
- 30:05their video coordinator. That is the one that has the
- 30:08iPad there that quickly jumps into it.
- 30:10Credit to Jace. Jace deserves a raise, boys.
- 30:12Do we all agree there? Man, great job.
- 30:15Jace. Tyler, I want to say it is.
- 30:16Yeah, yeah. Great work out of him. 2
- 30:19overturned. Calls by Jace.
- 30:20Thanks, Brian. Appreciate the call, man.
- 30:22You get back to us anytime. Hopefully it continues on for
- 30:26your squad. Yeah, that's a great point.
- 30:28And that three that he took, I think no, no, no good.
- 30:31That was I believe cut it back to one.
- 30:33That was the first time and only time the Florida had a 2
- 30:36possession lead in the whole game.
- 30:37They were up 4, right? Yes, and 60. 561.
- 30:40And then was that what it was somewhere around there?
- 30:43Or maybe it cut it to 6261? Regardless that shot, Cooper
- 30:47Koch got to have that and we talked about it during that
- 30:49shooting slump. He always felt it was the shots
- 30:53so beautiful. It's repeatable.
- 30:56He would just he was off. He was going through a slump and
- 30:59to be able to do that to continue to knock down shots.
- 31:02Now they're going to need that and it's going to have to
- 31:04continue against Nebraska because Bennett Sturtz And if
- 31:07you would have said yesterday, I send you a text, hey, I got my
- 31:11crystal ball out. Yeah.
- 31:13And then it starts. It's going to go over 9 from
- 31:14three. What would your score prediction
- 31:17been? That you changed the channel
- 31:20some point before it ended. I know I would have.
- 31:22Andy, welcome to the program. Andy, how are you?
- 31:25Great. Thanks for taking my call.
- 31:27Two thoughts. One, that Iowa game was down the
- 31:30last two minutes. I kept hearing my head Jim
- 31:34Zabel's voice from the great beyond saying hug those radios,
- 31:38kiss those radios. And my second thought is at some
- 31:42point our kids or our grandkids are going to say you had TJ and
- 31:48Ben coaching at the same time. Wouldn't that's it.
- 31:53Yeah, Andy, thanks for the call. And that's an excellent .2 great
- 31:56coaches that's at their respective universities.
- 31:59It's it's it's unbelievable. He's a great time to be a
- 32:02basketball fan in the state of Iowa.
- 32:04Like I'll throw Ben Jacobson in as well.
- 32:06And this guy stood the test of time and all that he's done.
- 32:09I didn't know it didn't go well against Saint John.
- 32:11St. John's, by the way, is in the
- 32:12Sweet 16. I remind you of that.
- 32:14How about did you see Pitino at the end of that game, The game
- 32:17win? No, the end of the game
- 32:18yesterday, the game winner, just like home cool parts collected
- 32:23sticks of his hands. Been there, done that a couple
- 32:27of times. I guess.
- 32:28By the way, I was down 25/21, 2:41 left to Virginia's.
- 32:33Virginia just missed a three rebound.
- 32:35I would go back the other way in the women's game.
- 32:38So we touched on this a little bit and I'm going to try to get
- 32:41the line up Tommy Birch tomorrow when when it comes to the Iowa
- 32:44State women and and nothing's going to be said or done till
- 32:47the Iowa State men our season comes to an end.
- 32:49You don't want to you don't want to, you know, inject anything
- 32:52other than that. I was always of the opinion that
- 32:57Bill's been there so long, he's earned the right to decide when
- 33:00it's over. And folks, it's going to be over
- 33:02when Audie Crooks and Addie Brown and the respect the rest
- 33:05of the respective seniors, they run out of eligibility.
- 33:09And I I would think that next year would be, you know, bills
- 33:12last year and and off he goes into retirement.
- 33:14But just the who's Kenzie Hare's gonna be a senior next year as
- 33:18well. I think there's one more, maybe
- 33:20Jada. Yeah, Jada Williams.
- 33:21J Williams, she'll be a senior next year.
- 33:23So, but the way I, I've never seen this when it comes to Iowa
- 33:26State women's basketball, they're not happy.
- 33:31The way that the program hasn't changed.
- 33:34It's the same offense. You, you, you've hear, I'm, I'm
- 33:37hearing more angst towards the Iowa State Women's program that
- 33:41I've heard maybe ever. You're absolutely right.
- 33:43And I still go back to it. Was one of the losses, one of
- 33:47the first losses during the losing streak earlier this year,
- 33:50I think it was the Cincinnati game.
- 33:51It was Game 2 of that losing streak that reached 5 when Brown
- 33:55went down. They were also playing at that
- 33:56time. Was it Jackson maybe was out too
- 33:59during that losing streak? But regardless, and when that
- 34:02happened, I just saw the official tweet that everybody
- 34:05puts out, you know, with the final score and obviously the
- 34:08final score did not go very well, right?
- 34:10And the sheer volume of negative.
- 34:12Response of replies to the tweet to that tweet and Ariana Jackson
- 34:16also. It was I, I, I was so floored by
- 34:21it because yes, I understand after a loss, yes, fans are
- 34:23upset and you might see a couple of those afterwards, sure.
- 34:27But it was the volume of it. It was.
- 34:30More than I can ever remember. 1520 replies.
- 34:33Bill's got to go. You know it's over.
- 34:36Stayed too long. I did not Is.
- 34:39It time to make a tough decision, right?
- 34:41You know, you see that a lot. Absolutely.
- 34:43And it is a tough call, the guy. Is Iowa State women's
- 34:47basketball? What does the attendance #600?
- 34:50And 93 or something didn't it? 4 figures in his first game.
- 34:54He built this into a model of consistency, right, and the high
- 34:59highs that they've had. Look at the fannies in seats.
- 35:03I mean, Iowa didn't before 22. This didn't happen over there,
- 35:07right? It happened at not Hilton wasn't
- 35:09full, but the lower bowl was full of most games every game.
- 35:13To be fair, Iowa was OK. It wasn't Iowa State.
- 35:16No, it's still pretty good in comparison to the rest of
- 35:17women's college basketball, Sure.
- 35:19But yes, Hilton, they had bodies in there watching those teams
- 35:23and then compete when you have a class like this, a special
- 35:26group. You know.
- 35:28It's a tough decision, yeah. And it's a tough decision
- 35:30because it's not just Bill's going to retire and hand it off
- 35:33to. Something.
- 35:33No. And he's not handing it off to
- 35:34his kid. You can't do that.
- 35:36And you can't. There's not a you got to blow
- 35:37out the whole staff. I'm sorry.
- 35:39They all have to go. If you're going to jettison him,
- 35:45you have to just do the whole thing.
- 35:47All the assistants, they've been there forever.
- 35:49And the job that is coveted. Oh heck yeah.
- 35:52When you're talking about women's basketball, this is a
- 35:55top 25 job and minimum. A top ten watch team I was #1
- 36:00viewership, I think I was state was like 9.
- 36:03We know that women's basketball matters in this state and it's
- 36:05mattered for decades. When you moved here and you
- 36:09first, I'm sure, heard people talking about going down to
- 36:11watch the six on six. Girls basketball is what God's
- 36:14name is wrong with these people in this state.
- 36:16Women's basketball, girls basketball has mattered in this
- 36:18state for decades, for a century.
- 36:21It is part of the fabric of our state, Iowa State women's
- 36:25basketball. There's an opportunity and it's
- 36:27not. Maybe you can find a mid major
- 36:30coach. There are coaches, there are
- 36:32sitting coaches that want the Iowa State job.
- 36:37That makes it even more difficult.
- 36:38If Audie Crooks puts her name in the portal.
- 36:41If Addie Brown decides to go into the portal, and I think
- 36:45those would be the the big two, Jada Williams told Tommy after
- 36:49the game. Tommy birched to Moines Register
- 36:52that she's coming back. Audie Crooks was a little bit
- 36:55evasive with her answer. Yes, the game had just ended.
- 36:59I mean, the game had just ended. So, you know, to get a no, I'm
- 37:02out of here. Probably not going to happen
- 37:04that quickly after the game. But it sounded like, you know,
- 37:07she's going to take her time and make a call.
- 37:09If everybody comes back, Bill comes back.
- 37:13If the two, I don't want to call them ringleaders, That sounds
- 37:17like it's, you know, not on the up and up.
- 37:19If the two main cogs in the wheel, the two stars, the two
- 37:22stars, if they decide to move on, then I think Iowa State
- 37:26moves on. Fair to say, put it that way,
- 37:29that Audie Crooks and Addie Brown have built Fenley and the
- 37:32rest of that coaching staff's future in the palm of their
- 37:34hands. It's as simple as that, I think
- 37:35it is. I think you absolutely nailed
- 37:37it. Troy is next.
- 37:39Hi, Troy, welcome to the program.
- 37:40What's on your mind, Troy? Great show guys.
- 37:43Hawkeye fan here, but he got to address Iowa State with Tory and
- 37:46Lipsy. They got the two best defensive
- 37:48guards left in the tournament, like having two locked down
- 37:51corners out there. And as the Hawk fan, loved
- 37:54watching Iowa State and Nebraska go at it.
- 37:57While Iowa State do that, they can watch the carnage on
- 38:00Thursday. Nebraska has Iowa guards playing
- 38:03for Nebraska. There's going to be storylines.
- 38:05Good morning that game and for being a Hawk fan, that game plan
- 38:10was amazing. The ball movement, the shot
- 38:12making and that was my favorite Hawkeye win since Iowa at Kansas
- 38:16And Trent, you said it's a little bookmarked that that was
- 38:19that was a great Oh your list. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:22It was quite the list and I know.
- 38:24Troy, thanks for the comment. Appreciate it.
- 38:26Good to hear from you, A. Few of my buddies were sending
- 38:28me other ones too. It's.
- 38:29A lot of scar tissues. A lot of moments throughout the
- 38:33time and the 27 year drought is over.
- 38:35Absolutely. It's a great wit.
- 38:38It's phenomenal. It truly was a phenomenal
- 38:41basketball game. This wasn't I thought of you
- 38:43and. Jack right after I wondered what
- 38:44was going on in the Condon household.
- 38:46He hopped up on the couch and jumped right into my arms.
- 38:48Ellen came over and gave you a hug.
- 38:50She also, she's got too much dad in her, I think watching
- 38:54basketball because at one point she says pissed off.
- 38:57The Hawkeyes got to get their S together.
- 39:00Well, she was right. Yeah.
- 39:01And yes, yes. What it was is 12 point lead at
- 39:05one point for Iowa. Was 5130. 9 Now at no point did
- 39:09I think that this now when I'm watching I was state extend the
- 39:12lead into, you know, the this this is over, yeah.
- 39:15Kentucky wanted to leave, right? They did.
- 39:17And how about Heisey after the game?
- 39:19Did you see his quote about that?
- 39:20We knew, and I'm paraphrasing folks, something about we knew
- 39:23if they, if we, you know, punched him in the mouth that
- 39:26they were going to quit. He essentially said that, I
- 39:29mean, if I'm a Kentucky fan and I'm hearing that from an
- 39:31opposing player, that my team is soft.
- 39:34And if I if my team gets hit in the mouth, they're going to
- 39:36quit. But during the Florida Down 12,
- 39:40there was no time to think. Oh, I was home free.
- 39:42Cruise control. Yeah.
- 39:43No, no, we've seen that champs coming back.
- 39:46They had a 8 point lead in the second-half at Purdue.
- 39:49They had a bleed of what, 10 points at Hilton?
- 39:52They had the lead against Michigan.
- 39:55They've been there before. It was just finishing it off.
- 39:59Finish it off with a big shot from El Thero and then a
- 40:02defensive stop to win the game against the defending.
- 40:05Game and not getting a shot off, so it's not like you had to hold
- 40:08your breath while the balls in the air like you did if you were
- 40:11a Nebraska fan watching the Fandy game.
- 40:14With that, Horn went off. I was like, how is it there more
- 40:17time? Because of course they're going
- 40:19to get a shot off, but of course it's going to.
- 40:21Go in this, this, this, this can't work out this easily for
- 40:24us, right? You're thinking that, hey, do
- 40:26we, how much time do we have six teams left of the Big 10 teams,
- 40:31how would you power rank them as far as their chances to get to
- 40:35to get to the championship, to get to the championship?
- 40:38Is Michigan still the most likely to get to the
- 40:40championship? I think so.
- 40:43Is Illinois second or is Purdue? Or do you want to go Michigan
- 40:49State because they've got if Michigan, if it goes according
- 40:52to the seed, Michigan State's going to have to beat UConn and
- 40:54then Duke. Oh yeah, I.
- 40:57Duke has not been great. But no, not at all, Michigan.
- 41:01I don't like the way Uconn's playing.
- 41:02I don't like the way Duke is playing.
- 41:03I do like the way Sad Johns is playing.
- 41:05Maybe you'd be Michigan State would be the easy answer.
- 41:07Illinois against that Houston defense.
- 41:10Oh boy, they can shoot to. Trent, they can.
- 41:14Could I say it's Purdue, this team?
- 41:18Purdue. How disappointing they've been,
- 41:20and it could be Purdue you. Say the same about Texas.
- 41:22They've been disappointing and here they are.
- 41:24Miller and Condon back to wrap things up, Transplazer today,
- 41:26our next circus sports sponsors, it's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 41:29Network. Good final minute of our
- 41:31program, halftime at Carver, Virginia, 2823 over the Hawks.
- 41:37Chitchat, right, leads the way with eight.
- 41:39UCLA maybe broke this women's team they're playing.
- 41:42Awful. They have not been good since
- 41:44that game and you're right, they may have broke them in that this
- 41:48by 50. Yeah, and got by barely fairly
- 41:52Dickinson. And that was tooth and nail,
- 41:55right? It was.
- 41:56Let's talk about your plays of the day.
- 41:57There's no NIT tonight. There is not.
- 42:00There is women's basketball, though that will continue after
- 42:03the Iowa, Virginia game. And I got a couple of doggies.
- 42:06OK, yes. You feel good about these picks?
- 42:09Pretty good. We're going to grab the points
- 42:11with Notre Dame. They're getting 5 1/2 against
- 42:13the Buckeyes and we're going to grab Illinois.
- 42:16I like that Illinois team, 13 1/2.
- 42:19They're getting on the road at Vanderbilt and that weird ass
- 42:21Jim. That will do it for us off the
- 42:23benches next. Miller and Condon with you
- 42:25Monday through Friday from noon until 2 and we talk sports with
- 42:29you. Thanks for being with us.
