- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist, and also
- 0:09happened to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the very windy, windy chicken
- 0:32coop. Obviously you can hear the girls
- 0:34in the background. We are in the middle of waiting
- 0:37for a storm to come through. Maybe we are under a tornado
- 0:42watch, but hopefully it's going if the risk is low.
- 0:45And we are praying for all our friends that have been hit down
- 0:48in the South over the last couple days because it has been
- 0:52no fun. Let's just say that has been no
- 0:54fun for anybody. OK, so today we are talking
- 0:58about the pursuit of happiness. Now, here's what's crazy in the
- 1:04United States in the Declaration of Independence, it actually
- 1:08promises you, it says that. I mean, are, are the people who
- 1:12wrote the, the, the Declaration of Independence, the founding
- 1:15fathers of this country actually saw fit to say that we had the
- 1:21right for the pursuit of happiness, which when you think
- 1:24about that is crazy because they're telling us all right,
- 1:27you have the right to pursue happiness.
- 1:29Now, they do not say at any point in time that we have the
- 1:31guarantee that we would find it. However, we have the right to
- 1:35pursue it. And that in itself sets you up
- 1:39to say, OK, this is something. And when you misconstrue
- 1:43definitions it, it's like, OK, I have this inalienable right to
- 1:48pursue happiness, but it does not promise that I will find it,
- 1:52that I will be happy doing it. It doesn't say any of that.
- 1:57And it often confuses people because we think it is something
- 2:02that we have the right to be. We have the right to be happy
- 2:06and an an automatic like I should just be happy.
- 2:09And here's the thing, no, we are never going to be happy all of
- 2:13the time. We are never going to be happy
- 2:15all of the time because we're human beings and we have too
- 2:17many, you know, complex emotions, too many parts of our
- 2:21mind, our our soul, our heart, our brain all work together.
- 2:26And in this symbiotic relationship of the complexities
- 2:30of how we think and feel and and process the world, to be able to
- 2:35say that we are going to be happy all the time is not
- 2:39accurate. Now, if someone says to you, are
- 2:42you generally a happy person? I can tell you that in the core
- 2:47of my gut, even when the worst things are going on, I feel at
- 2:51peace. I feel like I'm always at peace
- 2:56as a happy person. Now, I use the word happy, but
- 3:00it's really more about being peaceful.
- 3:03I have certainty in my skills, in what's around me and the
- 3:06people in my life. I have that.
- 3:09So that leads to happiness. That leads to me feeling happy
- 3:14because happy is not a possession.
- 3:15You have to remember that. It's not something you can go
- 3:17buy at CVS and say, OK, I came home, I've got a bag of happy
- 3:20today and I'm going to be all good.
- 3:21Doesn't work that way and Lord knows if it did, I would.
- 3:26I would imagine a lot of people would be having ACVS care card
- 3:29and going out there and buying it.
- 3:30However, happiness really is not anything of that.
- 3:35It's to me, it's like the quality of your level of of
- 3:39thought, the quality of your mindset, the quality of how
- 3:42quickly you can pivot, the quality of how you view
- 3:47situations as interesting instead of overwhelming right
- 3:50away. There are a lot of complexities
- 3:52to it and most of us have not thought them through.
- 3:57I mean it, it is a constant process to to cultivate
- 4:03happiness. That's why I love using the
- 4:06metaphor of the farm. Because right now, as I stand in
- 4:09the chicken coop area recording this for you, I'm overlooking
- 4:13the work we've done the over the weekend and we have done so much
- 4:16work. Posts have gone in for the
- 4:18garden. Everything has been electrified
- 4:20again to try to keep out the nemesis of the deer and and
- 4:25anything else that wants to get in there and eat.
- 4:28The flower garden has an A completely new fence around it.
- 4:31I still have to put fabrics down, pin things down.
- 4:35It's very windy. So it's going to be very hard to
- 4:37do that today. If in fact we, you know, could
- 4:41even be out here. I guess the rain is coming
- 4:44shortly. But in any event, this is about,
- 4:48when I look at it, am I happy? Yes.
- 4:50I'm very happy with the progress we've made so far.
- 4:53And two things can be two at the same time.
- 4:56I'm frustrated that we're not further along and I can look at
- 5:01it and I can be honest about that, but that doesn't take away
- 5:03from the feeling way down inside that I'm still at peace with
- 5:07where we are because that's where we are and that's what we
- 5:09have to deal with. And I'm not going to allow it to
- 5:11disrupt everything. I'm going to cultivate it just
- 5:14like I cultivate a garden, just like I cultivate flowers, just
- 5:18like I cultivate everything in my life.
- 5:21I'm going to cultivate happiness.
- 5:23I'm going to constantly be working on the garden of my
- 5:26mind. So the trick is remembering it's
- 5:29a pursuit of happiness, and it is recognizing that you can find
- 5:34happiness along the way and be aware that all those other
- 5:38emotions are there to help you stay on track, knowing if you're
- 5:42frustrated, you can fix it or any other things.
- 5:46All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:49will see you all tomorrow. Bye.
