- 0:00Speaker 1: Back at Carbone's as we continue on the UConn Hockey
- 0:02Speaker 1: Coaches Show. There's basketball tomorrow night downtown over at People's
- 0:06Speaker 1: Bank Arena. The guys are playing Purdue tomorrow night. Final
- 0:08Speaker 1: exhibition for the men before the doubleheader season opener next Monday.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mike and Wayne have the call 630 on the UConn
- 0:15Speaker 1: Sports Network. Here with Coach Cav as we continue to
- 0:18Speaker 1: talk UConn men's hockey. Your goaltenders, Cam Hendrickson has been phenomenal.
- 0:24Speaker 1: VD is 0-3 so far. He's played the Saturday games.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Here's an interesting question. I don't think it should be
- 0:32Speaker 1: the case, but do guys in front, whoever is playing goal,
- 0:38Speaker 1: do they play differently depending on who's in net? I mean,
- 0:42Speaker 1: it shouldn't be that way, but do they?
- 0:44Speaker 2: I don't think so. I mean, I don't know. Maybe sometimes,
- 0:48Speaker 2: but I don't think that's been the case through our
- 0:50Speaker 2: first six games. It may look that way, but I
- 0:59Speaker 2: don't think that's the case.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I just threw it out there to see would that
- 1:02Speaker 1: be the case. I mean, it shouldn't be, right?
- 1:04Speaker 2: No.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I mean, everything stays the same.
- 1:06Speaker 2: We play the same way. Yeah. So that shouldn't be
- 1:09Speaker 2: the case.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Cam's been terrific. He has seen a lot of shots
- 1:13Speaker 1: in his first three games, including the 50 that he
- 1:15Speaker 1: saw on Thursday. But very, very sharp. I mean, and
- 1:20Speaker 1: it sounds like he worked his tail off in the offseason.
- 1:23Speaker 1: He did.
- 1:23Speaker 2: And he worked his tail off last year during the year. Mm-hmm.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You know, he had a very big win for us
- 1:30Speaker 2: when Moose got hurt in January and he stepped in
- 1:32Speaker 2: to beat Lowell on the road. That was a big
- 1:35Speaker 2: win for him. And I really think that gave him
- 1:38Speaker 2: confidence going forward as well.
- 1:40Speaker 1: What did you see different from him when camp opened?
- 1:42Speaker 1: Some more confident from the summer?
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say that. And also, you know, he's
- 1:49Speaker 2: used to the speed. He's used to, uh, how hard
- 1:55Speaker 2: the shots are, uh, I think he's just used to
- 1:58Speaker 2: the way we play because he knows because the way
- 2:02Speaker 2: we play, there are certain areas on the ice where
- 2:04Speaker 2: we may give up a shot. And now he's comfortable
- 2:07Speaker 2: with that. Like if, if this breaks down, this is
- 2:10Speaker 2: where I'm probably going to see a shot from.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Do you like that trapezoid like they use in the
- 2:14Speaker 1: NHL now to keep the goalies around the net? I
- 2:17Speaker 1: don't remember your guys really wandering too, too far.
- 2:21Speaker 2: I don't, it's fine to me. I think it's, um,
- 2:27Speaker 2: irrelevant in our game, honestly. You don't see many goaltenders
- 2:31Speaker 2: going out and playing the puck outside of that trapezoid.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Right. Any other rules? Well, okay, the face-off rule is
- 2:37Speaker 1: a little different. I've noticed that. Yeah. Anything else of significance?
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah, you can make a hand pass in the defensive
- 2:42Speaker 2: zone now.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Like in the pros.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, you should be able to do that.
- 2:46Speaker 2: But other than that, I don't think there's really anything
- 2:50Speaker 2: that's unique. You know, you only get one timeout. You
- 2:53Speaker 2: don't get an extra timeout in overtime now. Okay. And
- 2:56Speaker 2: you can't call a timeout on an icing either.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Right. That I do know. Well, that used to be
- 3:03Speaker 1: the old rescue, but not anymore.
- 3:05Speaker 2: No.
- 3:06Speaker 1: You know, when I was talking with Joey on our
- 3:09Speaker 1: first show, thank you. Dinner's here early.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Chicken parm is his. Or the veal parm. You got
- 3:14Speaker 1: veal parm?
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I did. Thank you. Okay. Looks great.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that is awesome. Yep, that would be me.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Is this you?
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yes, that would be me too. I could stay there
- 3:21Speaker 1: for the break, but thank you. Both.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Yeah, you do it all, huh? When I talked to
- 3:30Speaker 1: Joey on the first coaches show, he mentioned he went
- 3:33Speaker 1: to a skating coach in the off season. He didn't think,
- 3:36Speaker 1: you know, he thought he was a pretty good skater
- 3:38Speaker 1: until he did that. Have you noticed the payoff of
- 3:41Speaker 1: doing stuff like that with Joey?
- 3:44Speaker 2: I think anytime that you're working, he looks like the
- 3:47Speaker 2: same skater to me. I'm sure though, but with him,
- 3:50Speaker 2: it might be different. And I think, you know, I
- 3:52Speaker 2: know Blazer also went to a skating coach over the
- 3:55Speaker 2: summer and I've noticed that I think he's picked up
- 3:58Speaker 2: a step. But a lot of it is strength, too.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:01Speaker 2: The stronger you get, the faster you're going to be.
- 4:03Speaker 2: So it's probably a combination of both things, I would think.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Okay. So in the offseason, when they're doing the strength
- 4:10Speaker 1: and conditioning, yes, you want to put on muscle. But
- 4:14Speaker 1: you don't want to bulk up like a football player
- 4:16Speaker 1: in some ways.
- 4:17Speaker 2: No.
- 4:18Speaker 1: And obviously the legs have a lot to do with it. Yeah.
- 4:20Speaker 1: So for skaters, particularly... I know they're doing a lot
- 4:24Speaker 1: of leg work. Are they doing a lot like thighs
- 4:26Speaker 1: and quads and.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Oh yeah. They're doing a lot of one legged stuff.
- 4:30Speaker 2: They do squats. It's not, there's no magic.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Yeah. It's just hard work.
- 4:35Speaker 2: It's hard work.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Yeah. I get it.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Thank you. Uh, yeah. So there's, there's nothing to it that,
- 4:42Speaker 2: you know, I, I don't think it's any, certainly not
- 4:47Speaker 2: rocket science. No, it's, it's just lift the weights and
- 4:50Speaker 2: get strong.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Right. Um, Speaking of Blay, he's off to a really
- 4:55Speaker 1: good start. Five assists on the season. I think he
- 4:59Speaker 1: had an assist. Yes, he assisted on Caden's goal that
- 5:02Speaker 1: made it 5-2. What have you thought of Blay's play?
- 5:04Speaker 1: He and Carlin DeZane, bigger roles this year. They're second-year guys.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Have they taken that jump that you hoped you would
- 5:11Speaker 1: see six games in?
- 5:12Speaker 2: I thought their line was very good on Saturday night especially.
- 5:17Speaker 2: You know, they created a myriad of chances all night long,
- 5:20Speaker 2: I thought. And... Not only that, but they played pretty
- 5:24Speaker 2: well defensively as well. They were on the ice for
- 5:27Speaker 2: that first goal, but other than that, I thought they
- 5:31Speaker 2: were one of our better lines all night long.
- 5:33Speaker 1: That's saying a lot. Ethan Whitcomb, too. It just seems
- 5:39Speaker 1: like Ethan, Ethan, and Caden, they played a lot last year,
- 5:43Speaker 1: especially down the stretch second half of the season. They
- 5:46Speaker 1: just seem to have a good chemistry. They have been
- 5:50Speaker 1: doing what they're supposed to be doing. What about the
- 5:52Speaker 1: leadership off the ice with these guys, the juniors?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's something, like, Joey wore a letter last year,
- 5:57Speaker 2: but Trey hasn't, and Mike hasn't, so I think that's
- 6:00Speaker 2: all kind of new to them, but we need, you know,
- 6:03Speaker 2: I tell them all the time, I want a locker
- 6:04Speaker 2: room full of leaders. I just don't want guys that
- 6:07Speaker 2: wear a letter to lead. Like, yeah, you elected them,
- 6:10Speaker 2: and I understand that, but that doesn't mean other players
- 6:13Speaker 2: don't have a voice.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Right. No, I agree.
- 6:15Speaker 2: And I encourage them all to step up, and so
- 6:17Speaker 2: do our captains. They don't want the responsibility of always
- 6:21Speaker 2: having to drive the bus. They need help as well.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Right. If it's player driven, you're going to have success.
- 6:26Speaker 1: If it's coach driven, it's not.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Well, usually.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Usually. Yeah. Well, I've heard that in many cases. You know,
- 6:32Speaker 1: the bigger the sport, like football, you certainly needed to
- 6:35Speaker 1: be player driven. What have you thought? Have you and
- 6:38Speaker 1: Jason had a chance to chat at all?
- 6:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I played golf with him this summer. I met
- 6:43Speaker 2: his wife and his family. He's got a beautiful place
- 6:47Speaker 2: in West Hartford and I had a great time with them.
- 6:50Speaker 2: I really enjoyed them. I've been to one game. I
- 6:55Speaker 2: have watched a couple others on television, and I really
- 6:58Speaker 2: enjoy watching how hard they're playing right now. They are competing.
- 7:03Speaker 2: They look like, like I talk about, connected. They look
- 7:06Speaker 2: like they're in sync as an offensive unit and a
- 7:09Speaker 2: defensive unit, special teams. So I think the future is
- 7:14Speaker 2: very bright for our football team.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I like what Jason has done, and he has
- 7:17Speaker 1: that same mentality you have In this day and age
- 7:20Speaker 1: of a lot of people transferring, he wants to develop
- 7:24Speaker 1: that talent.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:25Speaker 1: He did such a good job at Toledo. Now he's
- 7:27Speaker 1: bringing it here. And it's not easy bringing 80 new
- 7:29Speaker 1: guys in and having the connection that they seem to
- 7:31Speaker 1: have right now.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Especially him because, you know, we have maybe 12 to
- 7:35Speaker 2: 14 teams in hockey that could try to poach our players.
- 7:38Speaker 2: He has probably 100. Yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 1: You know. Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 2: So it's a lot different.
- 7:42Speaker 1: All right. Enjoy your dinner. We'll have Caden Shahan and
- 7:45Speaker 1: Ethan Gardula coming up next on the UConn Hockey Coaches Show.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Live from Carbones here on Learfield.
