Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Good morning. We're talking this week about making choices under pressure.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Are you facing some pressure in your life right now
- 0:13Speaker 1: that's really stressing you out, causing distress to you as
- 0:18Speaker 1: you think about it? I know about that. Probably every
- 0:21Speaker 1: person in the world knows what it's like to feel
- 0:24Speaker 1: that stress and pressure.
- 0:26Speaker 1: That sense of inadequacy and uncertainty about the future or
- 0:31Speaker 1: even the pain of things that are already happening that
- 0:34Speaker 1: are causing great
- 0:36Speaker 1: Discomfort and pain, whether physical or emotional in our lives.
- 0:42Speaker 1: We're looking at the book of Job and uh trying
- 0:46Speaker 1: to learn from him as he faced enormous stresses in
- 0:50Speaker 1: his life about this idea of making choices under pressure
- 0:55Speaker 1: that are the right choices. We saw last week that, uh,
- 0:59Speaker 1: Satan came to God and said, Oh, Job only serves
- 1:04Speaker 1: you because you make everything good for him. Your blessing
- 1:06Speaker 1: is life. But if you were to take those things away.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Then he'd curse you, and God said, OK, Satan.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Go to it. You can't touch Job, but touch all
- 1:16Speaker 1: of his things if you want. Here's what happened.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Starting in Job chapter 1 verse 13, now it happened
- 1:24Speaker 1: on the day when Job's sons and his daughters were
- 1:27Speaker 1: eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house that
- 1:31Speaker 1: a messenger came to Job and said the oxen were
- 1:35Speaker 1: ploughing and the donkeys feeding beside them, and the Sabians
- 1:40Speaker 1: attacked and took them. They also slew the servants with
- 1:44Speaker 1: the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped
- 1:48Speaker 1: to tell you.
- 1:51Speaker 1: While he was still speaking, another also came and said,
- 1:55Speaker 1: the fire of God fell from heaven and burned up
- 1:58Speaker 1: the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I
- 2:01Speaker 1: alone have escaped to tell you.
- 2:04Speaker 1: While he was still speaking, another also came and said
- 2:08Speaker 1: the Chaldeans formed 3 bands and made a raid on
- 2:12Speaker 1: the camels and took them and slew the servants with
- 2:16Speaker 1: the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped
- 2:18Speaker 1: to tell you.
- 2:20Speaker 1: And while he was still speaking, another also came and
- 2:24Speaker 1: said
- 2:25Speaker 1: Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine
- 2:29Speaker 1: in their oldest brother's house.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness
- 2:35Speaker 1: and struck the four corners of the house.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And it fell on the young people.
- 2:41Speaker 1: And they died
- 2:43Speaker 1: And I alone have escaped to tell you.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Then Job arose.
- 2:50Speaker 1: And tore his robe. That was a sign of incredible
- 2:55Speaker 1: distress and grief.
- 2:57Speaker 1: He tore his robe and shaved his head.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And he fell to the ground.
- 3:05Speaker 1: and worshipped
- 3:08Speaker 1: And he said
- 3:11Speaker 1: Naked I came from my mother's womb.
- 3:14Speaker 1: And naked I will return there.
- 3:18Speaker 1: The Lord gave.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And the Lord has taken away.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Blessed be the name of the Lord.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Through all this Job did not sin.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Nor did he blame God.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Well,
- 3:37Speaker 1: Here we have this pile of bad bad awful circumstances
- 3:46Speaker 1: one after another just mounting up. You can imagine the
- 3:50Speaker 1: impact of each one on Job all that he had
- 3:52Speaker 1: carefully built up in his business.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Crumbling around him and then his own kids.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Dying in that house.
- 4:02Speaker 1: What could Job do? He worshipped God. It seems almost incomprehensible,
- 4:09Speaker 1: doesn't it? If he'd believed in luck and not in God,
- 4:13Speaker 1: he would have responded really differently.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Even those who believe in God can question and crack
- 4:20Speaker 1: under the pressure.
- 4:22Speaker 1: In the midst of tragedy we still have a choice.
- 4:26Speaker 1: To react just as a human being or to react
- 4:30Speaker 1: as a spiritual being who has a God that he trusts.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I'm John North.
