- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at

- 0:22Thanks for listening. This morning scripture comes
- 0:27from the book of Acts chapter 8, starting verse 26.
- 0:33Now an Angel of the Lord said to Philip, go South to the road,
- 0:38the desert Rd. that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.
- 0:44So we started out and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an
- 0:49important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandaki,
- 0:53which means queen of The Ethiopians.
- 0:56This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship and on his way home
- 1:00was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the
- 1:04prophet. The Spirit told Philip, Go to
- 1:07that chariot and stay near it. Then Philip ran up to the
- 1:11chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet.
- 1:15Do you understand what you were reading?
- 1:17Philip asked How can I? He said, unless someone explains
- 1:22it to me. So he invited Philip to come up
- 1:25and sit with him. This is the passage of scripture
- 1:29the eunuch was reading. He was led like a sheep to the
- 1:32slaughter, and a lamb before its Shearer is silent.
- 1:37So he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation, he was
- 1:41deprived of justice. Who can speak of his
- 1:45descendants, for his life was taken from the earth.
- 1:49The eunuch asked Philip, tell me please, who is the prophet
- 1:53talking about? Himself or someone else?
- 1:57Then Philip began with that very passage of scripture and told
- 2:01him the good news about Jesus. As they travelled along the
- 2:06road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, look, here
- 2:10is water. What can stand in the way of me
- 2:13being baptized? And he gave orders to stop the
- 2:18chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch
- 2:21went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.
- 2:24When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord
- 2:28suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him
- 2:31again, but went on his way rejoicing.
- 2:35Philip, however, appeared at Azitus and travelled about
- 2:40preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.
- 2:45This is the word of God for the people.
- 2:47Of God. Thanks be to God.
- 2:54If you've ever had children, you've probably had the
- 2:59realization at some point that hearing is not the same as
- 3:05listening, right? And listening is not the same
- 3:11thing as acting. I've been around enough parents
- 3:16by now to know that I'm not alone in this, right?
- 3:21Children, and teenagers especially, have an amazing
- 3:27superpower. They're able to appear to engage
- 3:31in a conversation and then they blink and it's like the
- 3:36conversation never happened. Maybe that's true for for young
- 3:41adult children too. I don't know.
- 3:43We're not quite there yet. And listen, young people down
- 3:48here in front, I'm not throwing stones at anybody, right?
- 3:52I'm sure I was no different when I was those ages.
- 3:56My mom and dad could probably tell some stories if I ever let
- 4:00them do that, so I'm not trying to throw any shade at the young
- 4:04people. Just it's different now that I
- 4:07am an adult and I am continually amazed by this phenomenon.
- 4:14Don't worry boys, I'm not giving any specific stories this
- 4:18morning, but I do wonder. I do wonder if God feels similar
- 4:28or similarly when it comes to us listening to him, right?
- 4:35It's one thing to hear God speak to us.
- 4:38It's another thing to actually listen, to engage the
- 4:44conversation, and it's another thing entirely to actually act
- 4:49upon what God has said to us, right?
- 4:53But that's the, that's the communication loop, right?
- 4:55The the speaker speaks, then the listener has to actually listen.
- 5:00And before the the listener can even get to acting rightly or
- 5:05responding there there needs to be a level of understanding of
- 5:09the message that takes place. And so in this latter part of
- 5:15Acts Chapter 8, we find this story that we read this morning.
- 5:22It's it's part of the unfolding expansion of the Spirit's work
- 5:27in and through the early church. This story probably takes place
- 5:33roughly 3 to five years after the day of Pentecost, the birth
- 5:39of the church. It's during that time the the
- 5:42church was growing not just among the Hebrew Jews who were
- 5:48from that area of Jerusalem and Israel, but but also among Jews
- 5:53who had adopted a more Greek lifestyle, a more Greek
- 5:57language. And as the church grew, some
- 6:01divisions began to appear within the church, particularly between
- 6:06these two groups, especially around the way that the widows
- 6:13of those groups were being treated.
- 6:15There were accusations of favoritism, maybe even some
- 6:20veiled racism. And so the apostles, who were
- 6:25still the ones leading the church at that time, they
- 6:28gathered everyone together and they proposed a solution, right?
- 6:33They say, let's appoint some people to lead in this area in
- 6:37particular. This.
- 6:39This wasn't something the apostles felt they needed to
- 6:41give all of their time to overseeing.
- 6:44And so they encouraged the church to select seven men to
- 6:48oversee this task. In Acts 63, the apostle said,
- 6:53brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are
- 6:57known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom.
- 7:03We'll turn this responsibility over to them.
- 7:07Full of the spirit and wisdom. Those were the criteria and the
- 7:15church did right they they chose 7 people and in Acts 65 then the
- 7:22next couple verses says the proposal please the whole group
- 7:26and they chose Stephen a man full of faith and of the Holy
- 7:30Spirit. Also Philip pro chorus, Nicanor,
- 7:34Timon, Parmenas and Nicholas from Antioch a convert to
- 7:39Judaism. You aren't picking up on some of
- 7:42the the linguistic clues here. They're mostly Greek names,
- 7:48names Jeremy was glad I didn't make him read this morning.
- 7:53But among them was a man named Philip, full of the spirit and
- 8:03of wisdom. And Philip, when the the
- 8:07persecution against the church began to ratchet up a bit more.
- 8:11That persecution we talked about a few weeks ago when we were
- 8:14talking about Saul heading from Jerusalem to Damascus, when that
- 8:20persecution started to break out, Philip went to Samaria.
- 8:27And when he went to Samaria, that that group that didn't
- 8:30always get along with the Jewish people, a revival broke out.
- 8:37Jesus was proclaimed, people were healed, others were
- 8:42delivered from demonization. People were turning to faith in
- 8:48Jesus even in Samaria. And so when the news of that
- 8:52reached back to Jerusalem, that even the Samaritans, the
- 8:57Samaritans were turning to Jesus, the church sent Peter and
- 9:04John to go check it out to make sure this was truly a move of
- 9:09God, which it was. And then sometime after Peter
- 9:14and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching in other Samaritan
- 9:19villages along the way, God spoke to Philip, and God told
- 9:25Philip to leave Samaria all the great things that that God was
- 9:31doing there, and to go South to the road that runs from
- 9:36Jerusalem down to Gaza near the Mediterranean Sea.
- 9:42But God didn't tell Philip why he was to go there or what the
- 9:49reason was as to why he should leave behind all that good work
- 9:53that God was doing in the revival that had broken out in
- 9:56Samaria. And God doesn't tell Philip what
- 10:01to do when he gets there until Philip actually goes, right?
- 10:08It wasn't until Philip listened and followed the leading of the
- 10:12Spirit as he was walking along that road from Jerusalem to Gaza
- 10:16that God told him what he was to do next.
- 10:21See, Philip came upon a chariot on the road, and God said, go
- 10:26over to that chariot, stay nearby.
- 10:31That's it. It's all God told him.
- 10:35As far as we know, God doesn't tell Philip who is in the
- 10:38chariot or what he was supposed to say or do with that chariot
- 10:43or the person who was in it. But as Philip approaches, he
- 10:49hears the voice of a man in the chariot reading from the scroll
- 10:56of Isaiah. Presumably he was reading aloud,
- 10:59right for Philip to hear him, which let's pause there for for
- 11:04just a moment. This was clearly a powerful and
- 11:09educated man. First of all, he's travelling by
- 11:12chariot. Most of the normal common
- 11:15people, when they were moving from place to place, they were
- 11:19using their feet, right? They, they weren't riding in
- 11:21Chariots or even carts. They were walking.
- 11:24So this man was in a chariot clue number one clue #2 he's
- 11:30reading from the scroll of Isaiah, which means he was able
- 11:35to read. He had the resources to purchase
- 11:38a scroll, which was no small thing.
- 11:41And in those days of hand copied scriptures, Acts 8 tells us that
- 11:47this man was the head of the treasury of the Kingdom of
- 11:53Ethiopia. He served the kandaki, right.
- 11:57Your your translation might say Candace there.
- 12:01And that's how it got translated into to Latin.
- 12:03But that's not the name of the queen.
- 12:06It was the title for the Queen Mother of Ethiopia.
- 12:10And and when it says Ethiopia, it wasn't quite what we think of
- 12:15when we think of modern day Ethiopia, not the same nation.
- 12:19It was the ancient Kingdom of Cush, just mentioned in other
- 12:23places in scripture. It occupied what's modern Sudan,
- 12:28following right along the net, the Nile River below Egypt.
- 12:34All that to say, this was an important and educated African
- 12:41man who had been in Jerusalem to worship at the temple.
- 12:49And Philip, here's this man reading from the prophet Isaiah.
- 12:55And so coming up to the to the chariot, he says, do you
- 13:00understand what it is you're reading?
- 13:05And the man replies, how can I unless someone explains it to
- 13:10me? That's often how I feel when I
- 13:12approach the prophets in the Old Testament, right?
- 13:15You're reading all these things. You're like, man, there's some
- 13:18things I get in here, but there's a lot that I just don't
- 13:20quite understand. The man says, how can I unless
- 13:27someone explains? And Philip says to him, Well,
- 13:31friend, have I got a story for you today?
- 13:35And he, Philip, proceeds to tell this man the good news of Jesus,
- 13:40beginning from that very passage that the man had been reading
- 13:46it. It's interesting to me that when
- 13:49God LED Philip to this encounter, which was clearly
- 13:54intended to lead this man to faith in Jesus, Philip starts
- 14:01with a question, right? He asked the man, do you
- 14:05understand what you're reading? He doesn't preach A sermon to
- 14:11him. He doesn't hand him a tract.
- 14:14He doesn't give a testimony or or bust out the four spiritual
- 14:19laws or the Romans Rd. which Romans hadn't even been written.
- 14:23At this point Philip asks the man a question and that question
- 14:31begins a conversation. As that conversation goes on and
- 14:38Philip explains to him all about Jesus and who he was answering
- 14:43even the questions that that the Ethiopian eunuch was asking this
- 14:47this man evidently begins to trust in Jesus and as they pass
- 14:52them water he asks to be baptized.
- 14:56I think it's say to safe to say that based on his journey to
- 15:01Jerusalem to worship there, he, he knew something of Judaism.
- 15:05He knew that that baptism was a sign of repentance and
- 15:09cleansing. And maybe he even knew that
- 15:11baptism had become the sign of inclusion within the church.
- 15:19So Philip baptizes him in the water on the side of the road.
- 15:23And and then as they're coming up out of the water together,
- 15:29Philip disappears. He's whisked away to another
- 15:33location, another assignment, another move of the Spirit.
- 15:40And this man returns home. He finishes the long journey
- 15:45back along the Mediterranean Sea, down through Egypt, back
- 15:50home. He's carrying this new found
- 15:54faith in Jesus with him. I love this story, not just
- 16:03because it talks about how early Christianity made its way into
- 16:07Africa, but because it's a story of what it looks like to respond
- 16:13when God speaks to us. Philip wasn't an apostle.
- 16:21He wasn't one of the ones that Jesus had called to be an
- 16:25apprentice, one of the 12, but he was someone who was full of
- 16:30the Spirit. He was someone who was willing
- 16:33to say yes when there was an opportunity to serve.
- 16:40And that willingness to say yes allowed him to be used by God in
- 16:45ways I don't think Philip ever could have imagined.
- 16:51So what does Philip's story teach us about how to respond
- 16:56when God is speaking to us? Not the risk of of
- 17:02oversimplification. I think this story teaches us
- 17:06that when God speaks, we need to listen and we need to follow the
- 17:12Spirit, or as Pete Gregg puts it, listening and following.
- 17:19That's it. All the vast libraries of
- 17:23theological thought, millennia of sermons, and the relentless
- 17:28chatter of Christendom can be condensed down into just 4
- 17:33surprisingly simple words. Listen and follow Jesus.
- 17:43Listen and follow Jesus. I was joking with Jeremy when we
- 17:48were recording the podcast the other day for this past week,
- 17:51that that I could just stand up for my sermon and just say that
- 17:54much, right? How do we respond to God's
- 17:57voice? We listen and we follow Jesus.
- 18:02That's the foundation of our faith.
- 18:06It really is that simple. But simple doesn't mean it's
- 18:12always easy, right? I think that's why God doesn't
- 18:18usually jump right to the big ask.
- 18:22He starts with small things, he tells Philip.
- 18:27Go walk on this road, OK? I can go walk on that road.
- 18:31Anybody can go walk on that road.
- 18:35It's only after we've shown this willingness to listen and follow
- 18:39that God asks and entrusts us with more.
- 18:43It's like Jesus said in the one parable.
- 18:45You've been faithful with a few things.
- 18:49I'll entrust you with many things.
- 18:55But there's a sense in which if we're not going to do the small
- 19:01things that God asks us to do, we can't expect God to trust us
- 19:07with the big things. Have you ever read in James
- 19:12chapter 1 verses 22 to 25, it says do not merely listen to the
- 19:19Word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
- 19:26Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says.
- 19:29It's like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and after
- 19:32looking at himself, he goes away and immediately forgets what he
- 19:36looks like. But whoever looks intently into
- 19:39the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it, not
- 19:44forgetting what they heard but doing it, they will be blessed
- 19:51in what they do. It's not just hearing and it's
- 19:57not just listening. It's listening and following in
- 20:05a growing, deepening relationship with God.
- 20:09And sometimes that's going to be very clear on what you're to do.
- 20:14God's going to be very clear to you sometimes.
- 20:17We're going to have to ask God some follow up questions.
- 20:20We're going to have to ask for some clarity about what God's
- 20:24doing right. If God tells you to move to a
- 20:27new town or or maybe to quit your job might be worth asking
- 20:32the next question. Now that is, now when you want
- 20:37me to do that is now when you want me to move.
- 20:42Because He might be preparing you for what's coming, not just
- 20:46giving you an instruction to act on in the immediate moment.
- 20:51That's why we have to continue to cultivate this relationship
- 20:55with God so we can continue to grow in our ability to hear His
- 21:00voice well. And in those times where we
- 21:05maybe don't hear anything, what do we do then when God isn't
- 21:14speaking well, or maybe we're not hearing, what do we do then?
- 21:23What was that? Keep asking that that's
- 21:26absolutely true. We keep asking and we keep doing
- 21:32the things He we know he's already told us to do, right?
- 21:38What has God already told us to do?
- 21:42To love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and our
- 21:45neighbor as ourselves. To gather together as His people
- 21:49in worship and service to to to spend time with Him day by day
- 21:57in prayer and in scripture, in worship?
- 22:01Are you doing those things? Because if not, why would we
- 22:07expect Him to tell us something more?
- 22:12If we're not faithfully living into what we know God has
- 22:16already said to us, it's going to be awfully hard to hear Him
- 22:19saying anything else. At the end of the day, God wants
- 22:27to develop us into people who will say yes when He speaks to
- 22:33us, but he also wants to develop us into people who know what he
- 22:39would do in a given situation if he were us, right?
- 22:44What would God do in this situation if he were me?
- 22:50He's looking for people who are full of the Spirit, full of
- 22:55wisdom. People like Philip, when God got
- 23:00Philip to that chariot, doesn't tell us that he led him sentence
- 23:05by sentence in in what he was supposed to say.
- 23:09Philip knew what that moment was about.
- 23:13He understood the opportunity that lay before him and he acted
- 23:18faithfully. We have a choice in all of this.
- 23:25He didn't make us to be robots that get the command and execute
- 23:30it without thinking. It's not a choice of whether
- 23:36we'll follow Jesus when he speaks.
- 23:39It's a choice of whether we will cooperate with the transforming
- 23:44work that God wants to do in each of us so that he can work
- 23:49through us for the sake of His glory and His Kingdom in the
- 23:55world. So as we close this morning and
- 23:59as I I lead us in prayer and we sing our closing song, I just
- 24:06want to encourage you, if you have business to do with God
- 24:12this morning, don't ignore it. You may feel God inviting you
- 24:19into a relationship, a deeper relationship where you can hear
- 24:24God speaking to you. You might need to physically
- 24:28leave your seat as a sign of your response to God.
- 24:34Right, Because our bodies are part of who we are.
- 24:37It matters what we do. You may feel convicted this
- 24:41morning about times when you know you've heard God speaking
- 24:45to you and you've ignored it, you've tried to tune it out, or
- 24:52you haven't done the things you know you are to do.
- 24:56You can you can come this morning and confess those things
- 25:02to God and find forgiveness. You may want to come and and
- 25:07just thank God for the ways he speaks.
- 25:12Or you may want to come and pray for someone else or about
- 25:15something else entirely. The altars open this morning.
- 25:21Your your Pew or your heart can be your altar this morning.
- 25:28But as the writer of Hebrews said when he was quoting from
- 25:33one of the Psalms, he said today, if you would hear his
- 25:37voice, don't harden your heart. Friends.
- 25:44Don't miss what God is speaking to you because He speaks so that
- 25:53we can respond. We can join Him in what He's
- 25:57doing. Let's pray together.
- 26:02God, we come to you this morning.
- 26:07We come before you, only able to come because you already came to
- 26:18us. We come in prayer, speaking to
- 26:23you, God, because you made a way by speaking to us.
- 26:34You're the one who initiates the conversation.
- 26:37You're the one who started the work.
- 26:40You're the one who made it possible for us to turn to you
- 26:46and find life because You were willing to give yourself for us
- 26:56until this morning. God, we just want to ask, would
- 27:05you speak to us? Holy Spirit, is there something
- 27:11you want to say to me this morning?
- 27:23It might be an invitation, it might be conviction, it might be
- 27:32a burden to pray for someone or something.
- 27:43But Jesus, we want to be transformed into people who say
- 27:48yes when you speak to us, people who say yes even before you
- 27:55speak to us, People who are willing to do whatever it is
- 28:01you're asking because we trust in you.
- 28:06And you've shown yourself to be good.
- 28:09You've shown yourself to be faithful.
- 28:11You've shown yourself to be trustworthy.
- 28:19So, Lord, we come to you today. Holy Spirit, would you speak to
- 28:27us?
