- 0:03Speaker 1: Hike and everybody. I'm Dan Horde and this is the
- 0:06Speaker 1: Bengals Booth Podcast, the Sweet Nectar Edition, as we look
- 0:10Speaker 1: back at the bengals first win in forty nine days,
- 0:14Speaker 1: a thirty to sixteen victory over John Gruden's Oakland Raiders.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Coming up, you'll hear radio replays from the win, locker room,
- 0:22Speaker 1: comments from key players, and Dave Lapp them will join
- 0:25Speaker 1: me for postgame analysis. Plus, in this week's fun Facts interview,
- 0:30Speaker 1: you'll get to know a Ringo who was a star
- 0:33Speaker 1: in his college days, Bengals defensive tackle Christian Ringo. All
- 0:38Speaker 1: of that is straight ahead, but first, here's a quick
- 0:40Speaker 1: reminder that you can have the latest edition of this
- 0:43Speaker 1: podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet, or computer by
- 0:47Speaker 1: subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher, or pod Bean. It's the greatest
- 0:52Speaker 1: invention since the mechanical pencil. I'm constantly updating stats and
- 1:00Speaker 1: other information on the spotting boards that I make each
- 1:02Speaker 1: week as part of my game prep, and it would
- 1:05Speaker 1: be a total pain in the butt if I had
- 1:08Speaker 1: to constantly sharpen my pencils. The mechanical pencil allows me
- 1:13Speaker 1: to twist the tip to extend the lead as the
- 1:16Speaker 1: point gets worn down. Plus I can write very neatly
- 1:21Speaker 1: in small print. A very handy instrument that dates back
- 1:25Speaker 1: to the eighteenth century, the mechanical pencil. Now, let's get
- 1:31Speaker 1: to football. The most famous poem in the history of
- 1:35Speaker 1: NFL films is called The Autumn Wind, written in nineteen
- 1:39Speaker 1: seventy four to describe Al Davis's Oakland Raiders. Here's how
- 1:44Speaker 1: that poem ended in my best John Facinda voice, The
- 1:50Speaker 1: Autumn Wind is a radar pillaging just for fun. He'll
- 1:56Speaker 1: knock you round end upside down and laugh when he's
- 2:01Speaker 1: conquered and won. That described the Raiders from the mid
- 2:07Speaker 1: seventies to the mid eighties, when they won three Super
- 2:10Speaker 1: Bowls in eight years, but not so much anymore. Oakland
- 2:15Speaker 1: entered Sunday's game at Paul Brown Stadium with a three
- 2:18Speaker 1: and ten record, and the Bengals were the team doing
- 2:21Speaker 1: the pillaging. Derek Carr is ready for the shotgun, snap
- 2:24Speaker 1: catches retreats five steps from behind, football goes out a
- 2:29Speaker 1: scramble for the football after the sacks by Sam Hubbard,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and it is recovered by the Bengals after their own
- 2:36Speaker 1: forty nine yard line. Sam Hubbard, with a blind side sack.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Derek Carr never saw him coming, and the Bengals recover
- 2:45Speaker 1: at their own forty nine yard line. That was the
- 2:47Speaker 1: first of two sacks for Hubbard and five for the Bengals,
- 2:51Speaker 1: who held the Raiders to two hundred ninety seven yards
- 2:55Speaker 1: the second week in a row that Cincinnati held the
- 2:57Speaker 1: opponent to fewer than three hundred. Here's Hubbard. I think
- 3:01Speaker 1: we weren't doing anything different. You know, We've been working
- 3:03Speaker 1: so hard throughout the season, you know, covering him on
- 3:06Speaker 1: the back end and trying to get to the passers
- 3:09Speaker 1: as the rushers, and I think today we kind only
- 3:11Speaker 1: just played a complete game, covering up in the back end,
- 3:14Speaker 1: allowing us to get home, working our pass rous games
- 3:17Speaker 1: and sticking to the game plan, everyone having faith and
- 3:20Speaker 1: staying together throughout. Hubbard's first career forced fumble was recovered
- 3:23Speaker 1: by Carlos Dunlap and the Bengals look to capitalize on
- 3:27Speaker 1: the very next play. First and ten from the forty nine,
- 3:30Speaker 1: Driscoll fakes to mixing drops back guns it deep down
- 3:33Speaker 1: the middle of the field. It is underthrown and it's
- 3:36Speaker 1: picked up at the five yard line by Eric Harris
- 3:39Speaker 1: and he is down at the six. John Ross was
- 3:42Speaker 1: behind the Raiders secondary on that play, but Jeff Driscoll
- 3:45Speaker 1: didn't put quite enough on the throw through the interception,
- 3:49Speaker 1: and you know, I just had to had to tell
- 3:51Speaker 1: myself that those things happen, you know, don't be gun
- 3:54Speaker 1: shy and keep playing within the offense and was able
- 3:57Speaker 1: to come back and respond. He responded with three bag
- 4:00Speaker 1: throws to Tyler Boyd on the Bengals next drive, a
- 4:03Speaker 1: seven yard game when the Bengals went for it on
- 4:05Speaker 1: fourth and two, a twenty one yard strike down to
- 4:08Speaker 1: the six yard line, and a touchdown that gave Cincinnati
- 4:12Speaker 1: the lead, third down and goal from the seven at
- 4:14Speaker 1: the Bengals try to score first shotgun snap Bock Bye
- 4:18Speaker 1: Boyd touchdown Bengals an emphatic spike by Tyler Boyd, followed
- 4:25Speaker 1: by some Chad Johnson like Irish dancing as the Bengals
- 4:30Speaker 1: are on the scoreboard. Boyd had four catches for thirty
- 4:33Speaker 1: eight yards before missing the second half with a knee injury.
- 4:37Speaker 1: He's up to seventy six receptions for one thou twenty
- 4:41Speaker 1: eight yards and seven touchdowns this season. I spoke to
- 4:45Speaker 1: Tyler after the game about the three key catches he
- 4:49Speaker 1: made on the Bengals first scoring drive. You know, I
- 4:52Speaker 1: just will him do anything I can, you know, to
- 4:55Speaker 1: continue to draft, you know, to continue to allow Jeff
- 4:59Speaker 1: to trust me times like that, you know when we
- 5:01Speaker 1: gotta go for it all. So I mean, I'll just
- 5:05Speaker 1: continue to do my job and just I'm gonna be
- 5:07Speaker 1: ready for next week. You weren't able to play in
- 5:08Speaker 1: the second half. What can you tell us? This is
- 5:11Speaker 1: banged up a little bit? You know, nothing, nothing, nothing
- 5:13Speaker 1: too serious, nobody should worry about. But um, I think
- 5:16Speaker 1: actual bread to go next week for sure, Let's hope.
- 5:19Speaker 1: So Boyd was the star and the Bengals first scoring drive.
- 5:23Speaker 1: The next one belonged to Joe Mixon. Second and two
- 5:26Speaker 1: for the Bengals at their own thirty three, they will
- 5:28Speaker 1: give it to Mixon. He will run up the middle
- 5:30Speaker 1: for the first down, chokes, the safety runs to the
- 5:33Speaker 1: fifty down, the first sideline to the Raiders forty the
- 5:36Speaker 1: thirty Yeah, twenty, he has shoved out a bounds by
- 5:39Speaker 1: Nicholas Morrow at the twenty yard line of Oakland, a
- 5:44Speaker 1: forty seven yard run for Joe Mixon, his longest of
- 5:48Speaker 1: the season. That was the key play on a ninety
- 5:51Speaker 1: yard touchdown drive I formation backfield. Driscoll takes the snap,
- 5:57Speaker 1: gives it to Mixon nice toward the goal line, waiting
- 6:00Speaker 1: for a signal done Yet it's there. It is a
- 6:05Speaker 1: touchdown for Joe Mixon and the Bengal score on fourth
- 6:09Speaker 1: and goal from the one. Mixon finished with twenty seven
- 6:12Speaker 1: carries for one hundred twenty nine yards after going for
- 6:15Speaker 1: one eleven on twenty six lugs last week. And I'm
- 6:18Speaker 1: just very happy, you know that we're on his path.
- 6:22Speaker 1: You know, I'm just gonna try to continue to keep
- 6:24Speaker 1: you know, plugging on the train man, and you know,
- 6:26Speaker 1: whatever happens at the end of the season, it happened.
- 6:29Speaker 1: But you know, it feels great to go out there,
- 6:32Speaker 1: put on the show for the fans and come out
- 6:35Speaker 1: with the way man. Feels great. It was fourteen nothing
- 6:37Speaker 1: at that point, and two plays later the Bengals defense
- 6:41Speaker 1: got the ball back, hands it off to re Shard
- 6:43Speaker 1: and he will pick up the first down. As he
- 6:46Speaker 1: lost the football, the Bengals appear to have it at
- 6:49Speaker 1: the thirty four yard nine, yes, and they do. It's
- 6:52Speaker 1: recovered at the thirty four by dark Quees Deinard. Reeshard
- 6:58Speaker 1: had the first down but did not go down. Hardy
- 7:01Speaker 1: Nickerson forced the fumble, his second forced fumble of the year,
- 7:05Speaker 1: and dark Quest Denard recovers at the Oakland thirty four
- 7:09Speaker 1: that led to a Randy Bullock field goal that made
- 7:11Speaker 1: it seventeen nothing Cincinnati. The Raiders first five drives went
- 7:16Speaker 1: punt fumble, punt, punt fumble. I talked to linebacker Vinny Ray.
- 7:22Speaker 1: We did a good job stopping the run and that
- 7:24Speaker 1: led to more third and seven and third and eight
- 7:26Speaker 1: instead of thirty one third and twos, and you know, yeah,
- 7:31Speaker 1: it was it was a great job with the run game.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I've really credit twenty two and twenty seven our corners
- 7:36Speaker 1: of twenty one. These guys are coming down and setting
- 7:39Speaker 1: the edge and doing a great job for us in
- 7:41Speaker 1: the run game. He is there any part of you
- 7:43Speaker 1: that kind of says, why hasn't the defense played like
- 7:47Speaker 1: this all year? A part of me think thought that,
- 7:49Speaker 1: you know, I came in here him like, man, I wish,
- 7:53Speaker 1: you know, we would have finished off some games, uh
- 7:55Speaker 1: you know here you know after the buye, you know,
- 7:58Speaker 1: like thinking Baltimore, you know, games like that. But hey,
- 8:03Speaker 1: we are we are right now and the best thing
- 8:05Speaker 1: we could do is keep getting better as a team.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The Raiders got on the scoreboard with three forty eight
- 8:10Speaker 1: left and a half on Derek Carr's one yard touchdown
- 8:12Speaker 1: passed the tight end Lee Smith, but the Bengals immediately
- 8:16Speaker 1: answered with a Randy Bullock field goal to lead twenty
- 8:19Speaker 1: to seven at the half. Oakland chipped away at that
- 8:23Speaker 1: lead in the second half. The NFL's tallest kicker, six
- 8:27Speaker 1: foot five inch, Daniel Carlson, drilled three field goals while
- 8:31Speaker 1: Bullock added one. A Bengals lead that had been seventeen
- 8:35Speaker 1: points was down to seven when Carlson kicked off to
- 8:38Speaker 1: Alex Erickson with about five minutes left in the game.
- 8:42Speaker 1: He sprints to the ten cuts toward the near sideline.
- 8:45Speaker 1: After twenty the twenty five chump cut pass the kicker.
- 8:49Speaker 1: He's in Two Oakland Raiders here enjoying his sprinting down
- 8:52Speaker 1: the near sideline. Eric Harris saves the touchdown water return
- 8:58Speaker 1: for Alex Erikson, and thankfully there is no laundry on
- 9:02Speaker 1: the playing fred exactly. I was just celebrating and his
- 9:05Speaker 1: praying that there's no flags. I didn't know if there
- 9:07Speaker 1: was or wasn't um, but you know, I know, I
- 9:10Speaker 1: know how hard these guys are working for me to
- 9:12Speaker 1: give me space, and so we gotta live with a
- 9:14Speaker 1: few of the flags because I know they're working their
- 9:16Speaker 1: butts off to you know, give me opportunities to get
- 9:18Speaker 1: bigger returns. So I appreciate all their effort. That seventy
- 9:20Speaker 1: eight yard returned by Ericson was his longest of the
- 9:23Speaker 1: year and set up a score that gave the Bengals
- 9:26Speaker 1: some breathing room. Bengals up by seven four ten left.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Here's a toss sweep mixing with blockers in front on
- 9:32Speaker 1: the ten five to the pylon touchdown Bengals as Jill
- 9:39Speaker 1: mix In sprints fifteen yards for what could be a
- 9:43Speaker 1: clinching touchdown depending on the situation. I know it's gonna
- 9:46Speaker 1: be a time where I'm gonna have to put the
- 9:48Speaker 1: team on my back. You know, they're gonna they're gonna
- 9:50Speaker 1: dive up the run and it's up to me and
- 9:52Speaker 1: a lineman to come out there and execute and deliver
- 9:55Speaker 1: also with the tight ends and receivers. But you know,
- 9:58Speaker 1: when you get in a situation like that, man, I
- 10:00Speaker 1: gotta do whatever I can. Note a situation, note down
- 10:03Speaker 1: in distance and get them first downs to protect the
- 10:06Speaker 1: football at all costs. The game wasn't quite to the
- 10:09Speaker 1: coffin nails stage until Geno Atkins provided a David car
- 10:14Speaker 1: Wreck shotgun snap car in trouble fucked again. You know,
- 10:19Speaker 1: Geno Atkins single handedly destroying the Oakland Raiders here in
- 10:24Speaker 1: the fourth quarter. I'll tell a nice little swim move inside,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and they had a back inside trying to chip and
- 10:30Speaker 1: help him. Richard had no chance. I mean, he just
- 10:35Speaker 1: absolutely tooled Chaz Green. It was like seeing later Bro,
- 10:39Speaker 1: and then the back to try to help pick him up.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Richard no way sack city. Atkins finished with three sacks
- 10:46Speaker 1: for the first time in his NFL career and is
- 10:49Speaker 1: up to ten this season, the third time the Geno
- 10:52Speaker 1: has reached double digits. His career high is twelve and
- 10:55Speaker 1: a half. More importantly, the five game losing streak is
- 11:00Speaker 1: over as the Bengals win their home finale thirty to sixteen.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Here are Marvin Lewis, Joe Mixon and Jeff dress Goal.
- 11:08Speaker 1: They needed this. Our football team needed today. They needed
- 11:11Speaker 1: to go out and win today. They've been working hard.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Our fans needed today. I mean it's a great feeling.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Of course. Um it's like I said, it's been a
- 11:18Speaker 1: while since we've been able to bring good win here
- 11:21Speaker 1: or you know, win here, you know I should say,
- 11:23Speaker 1: but you know, it's it feels great. Man. Everybody got
- 11:26Speaker 1: smiles on their faces, and um, you know, just I'm
- 11:29Speaker 1: just happy for them. I'm happy for the coaches and
- 11:32Speaker 1: happy for the fans, you know most of all. But
- 11:35Speaker 1: it's blessing. It's definitely the sweet sweet Necker of victory. Um,
- 11:40Speaker 1: I mean, it's awesome. These guys have battled all year long,
- 11:43Speaker 1: and um, you know, we haven't had a win in
- 11:45Speaker 1: a while, and being able to come out and with
- 11:48Speaker 1: our last game at home this year and in getting
- 11:52Speaker 1: to win it was huge. And it's just a testament
- 11:54Speaker 1: to m everybody in this building that, uh, you know,
- 11:58Speaker 1: even though things haven't gone great for us, we've battled
- 12:01Speaker 1: three and we found a way to get a big one. Today.
- 12:03Speaker 1: The Bengals could still finish eight and eight, but have
- 12:06Speaker 1: been eliminated from playoff contention. The Steelers went over the
- 12:10Speaker 1: Patriots officially knocked them out. Now time to bring him
- 12:14Speaker 1: my broadcast partner, Dave Lapham for postgame analysis and we
- 12:17Speaker 1: start with one of the bengals best defensive performances of
- 12:21Speaker 1: the year, highlighted by holding the Raiders to three for
- 12:25Speaker 1: fourteen on third down conversions, a season best twenty one percent.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I thought that was the story of the game. There
- 12:33Speaker 1: were many storylines in the game, but three for fourteen
- 12:35Speaker 1: on third down has got to be the number one storyline.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Team comes in did lasting the league on third down.
- 12:40Speaker 1: They've been dead last pretty much all year, allowing fifty
- 12:43Speaker 1: two fifty two point seven percent and then allow three
- 12:47Speaker 1: for fourteen, and cart knows what he's doing. He's got
- 12:50Speaker 1: a Pro Bowl tight end to get the football too.
- 12:51Speaker 1: He's good competent running backs. The offensive line was beaten up, granted,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and that was a big factor in the football game.
- 12:56Speaker 1: You know, Jordy Nelson to throw to hold him to
- 12:58Speaker 1: three for fourteen on third down, it was big. I mean,
- 13:01Speaker 1: hopefully that's the sign of things to come down the
- 13:04Speaker 1: last couple of games here and holding the sixteen points.
- 13:07Speaker 1: You know, I remember even when we played back in
- 13:08Speaker 1: the old days in the seventies, it was like one
- 13:10Speaker 1: of the defensive goals seventeen points or less. In today's NFL,
- 13:14Speaker 1: it's probably twenty maybe twenty four points or less held
- 13:18Speaker 1: them sixteen held him to below what the old standard
- 13:21Speaker 1: used to be, which I think is a pretty good deal.
- 13:23Speaker 1: And twenty five points more is the barometer with coach Lewis,
- 13:28Speaker 1: they're forty eight one and one when they scored twenty
- 13:30Speaker 1: five points more six oh. This year all their wins
- 13:33Speaker 1: they scored twenty five points and more. So obviously that's
- 13:36Speaker 1: a big barometer. They did that offensively, putting thirty on
- 13:38Speaker 1: the board considering all the weapons they didn't have, and
- 13:42Speaker 1: then they lose Tyler Boyd for the second half of
- 13:44Speaker 1: the football game. They knew they had to run it.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Oakland knew they had to run it. Paul Gunson knew
- 13:49Speaker 1: they had to run at the defensive coordinator and do
- 13:52Speaker 1: were times where they struggled, but they made enough big plays.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Joe's forty seven yard runs set up a touchdown, Joe
- 13:57Speaker 1: had a fifteen yard touchdown run to finalize a big
- 14:00Speaker 1: turned from Alex Ericsson. So when you look at it
- 14:02Speaker 1: was complimentary football, offense, defense, special teams. They all chipped in.
- 14:06Speaker 1: They all chipped in with Penley's and mistakes, but they
- 14:08Speaker 1: all chipped in with big players as well, and that's
- 14:11Speaker 1: how you win football games in this league. It was
- 14:13Speaker 1: an extraordinary week for Geno Atkins. He and his wife
- 14:16Speaker 1: Kristen had the Atkins Week of Giving. Every day they
- 14:19Speaker 1: did something for families more than fifty total. They paid
- 14:23Speaker 1: medical bills, they contributed to tuition, they fed the homeless.
- 14:28Speaker 1: They had a party at Cincinnati Children's Hospital on Friday.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And he had some good karma coming because he had
- 14:34Speaker 1: three sacks in the game dominated the fourth quarter. He's
- 14:37Speaker 1: up to double digit sacks for the season. God blessed
- 14:39Speaker 1: Gino for helping so many people, Gino and his wife,
- 14:42Speaker 1: and God blessed him today with three sacks. I mean,
- 14:46Speaker 1: you know, good things happen to good people and Gino
- 14:49Speaker 1: is a great example of it today. And the thing
- 14:51Speaker 1: that impresses me about Gino, as we know, he's quiet
- 14:54Speaker 1: as a church mouse. He's not doing anything for publicity.
- 14:57Speaker 1: He could. He shuns a camera, doesn't want a camera.
- 15:00Speaker 1: None of this happened in front of cameras. None of
- 15:02Speaker 1: this happened in front of microphones. Gino was doing it
- 15:04Speaker 1: because Gino and his wife felt like they should do it.
- 15:07Speaker 1: And that's a testament to them. Attribute to them and
- 15:10Speaker 1: you know, the old saying goes, what kind of a
- 15:13Speaker 1: person are you when nobody's watching? Gino and his wife
- 15:16Speaker 1: showed that they're great people because, you know, not that
- 15:18Speaker 1: many people were aware of what he did, and what
- 15:21Speaker 1: he did affected many families in a very positive way.
- 15:24Speaker 1: You know, even the playing field for people that need
- 15:27Speaker 1: help around the holiday season. It's good stuff by the
- 15:30Speaker 1: Atkins couple. Gino Atkins and Sam Hubbard were the stars
- 15:33Speaker 1: on the defensive side of the ball. Hubbard had two
- 15:35Speaker 1: sacks and a forest fumble on offense. Great day for
- 15:38Speaker 1: Joe Mexon as he tops one hundred rushing yards for
- 15:40Speaker 1: the second consecutive week, twenty seven carries, one hundred twenty
- 15:44Speaker 1: nine yards and a pair of touchdowns, much of the
- 15:47Speaker 1: yardage coming on his longest run of the season, a
- 15:49Speaker 1: forty seven yard or yeah, that was the thing of beauty.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And he was matting another one that didn't bust it
- 15:54Speaker 1: for seventy yards. He thought that he, you know, it
- 15:55Speaker 1: could make. He had to make one move on a
- 15:57Speaker 1: defensive player that got me to good play. I mean,
- 16:00Speaker 1: Joe's a load out there in space and the guy
- 16:01Speaker 1: made a good tackle. I mean, they're paid to play
- 16:03Speaker 1: as well. But Sam Hubbard and Alex Erickson, I mean,
- 16:08Speaker 1: you don't put a position on these guys, because all
- 16:10Speaker 1: Sam Hubbard plays is defensive end, defensive tackle, fullback and
- 16:13Speaker 1: shortyardisan goal line, a bunch of special teams. Alex Erickson
- 16:17Speaker 1: wide receiver, outside slot, emergency running back, emergency quarterback, return guy,
- 16:22Speaker 1: all special teams. These guys are football players, you know.
- 16:26Speaker 1: And when you look at it, some of the young
- 16:28Speaker 1: guys that are stepping up and assuming leadership roles, by
- 16:31Speaker 1: the way, not only the kind of people they are,
- 16:33Speaker 1: but it's easier to be a leader when you play
- 16:36Speaker 1: well and do it, you know, over and over and
- 16:38Speaker 1: over again. And they're starting to get that way. And
- 16:40Speaker 1: I mean you look at the second and third picks
- 16:42Speaker 1: Jesse Bates and Sam Hubbard. Jesse Baks leading the team
- 16:45Speaker 1: and tackles amongst the best of rookies in terms of tackles,
- 16:49Speaker 1: three interceptions to boot. Sam Hubbard now with six sacks
- 16:52Speaker 1: on the year. And I'll tell you what a second
- 16:54Speaker 1: and third round pick, boy, pretty darn good. And they're
- 16:57Speaker 1: assuming leadership positions. So some good things are happening amongst
- 17:00Speaker 1: all the turmoil, all the bad, all the injury. You know,
- 17:03Speaker 1: all the dark cloud there is a silver lining always
- 17:05Speaker 1: and these guys are two examples of that. For the
- 17:08Speaker 1: seconds drag year. There's a lot of speculation that it
- 17:11Speaker 1: could be Marvin Lewis's final home game as the Bengals
- 17:14Speaker 1: head coach. We'll see what his future holds at the
- 17:16Speaker 1: end of the year. If it turns out to be
- 17:18Speaker 1: his last home game, he walks off chin held high
- 17:21Speaker 1: with a victory over the Oakland Raiders. Yeah, and they've
- 17:24Speaker 1: won a seven in a row now home finales eleven
- 17:27Speaker 1: out of twelve home finales, and Coach Lewis I think
- 17:31Speaker 1: ends up something like fourteen and four, fifteen and four
- 17:34Speaker 1: something like that. No, what four twelve and four with
- 17:38Speaker 1: the sixteen home finales, twelve and four all good stuff.
- 17:41Speaker 1: I mean, you know, everybody wants to finish well, finish strong,
- 17:46Speaker 1: leave a good taste in everybody's mouth, their last opportunity
- 17:50Speaker 1: to partake in the activity at the stadium. And they've
- 17:53Speaker 1: done that pretty consistently here down the stretch. So obviously,
- 17:57Speaker 1: you know, one and seven mark for an eight game stretch,
- 17:59Speaker 1: losing five rule before that, you know, how's everybody with
- 18:03Speaker 1: a bad taste. But this will wash a little bit
- 18:06Speaker 1: of it. Doubt we'll leave with the big thirty to
- 18:08Speaker 1: sixteen victory over that ry it is. It was career
- 18:11Speaker 1: win number one thirty one from Marvin Lewis. He moves
- 18:14Speaker 1: into a tie for twenty fourth all time with Hank Stram.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Or I guess I should say that Marvin matriculates into
- 18:22Speaker 1: a tie for twenty fourth with Hank Stram. Up next
- 18:27Speaker 1: a road game against the six seven and one Cleveland Browns,
- 18:30Speaker 1: who are four and two under interim coach Greg Williams.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Now time for this week's fun Facts segment, where you
- 18:37Speaker 1: get to know the person under the pads. In this case,
- 18:40Speaker 1: it's a defensive tackle who has claimed off the Cowboys
- 18:43Speaker 1: practice squad the day after Thanksgiving. Time for this week's
- 18:47Speaker 1: edition of fun Facts with Bengals defensive lineman Christian Ringo
- 18:51Speaker 1: from Jackson, Mississippi, the state capital and the biggest city
- 18:54Speaker 1: in Mississippi. Did you grow up in the city or
- 18:57Speaker 1: in the country city Son? You say that because everybody
- 19:02Speaker 1: in Mississippi, I'm considered a city boar, but outside of Mississippi,
- 19:06Speaker 1: I'm considered country. Tell us a little bit about the
- 19:09Speaker 1: kinds of things you're interested in this kid. Of course,
- 19:12Speaker 1: football you know that was number one. I love other
- 19:14Speaker 1: sports like baseball and basketball. You know, I just liked
- 19:19Speaker 1: the sports. As kid, I didn't I didn't too much
- 19:21Speaker 1: like school as much, but I went. You know, I
- 19:23Speaker 1: was a good student, but I just love sports. For
- 19:26Speaker 1: visiting the Christian ringo. Your dad played college football. What
- 19:30Speaker 1: do you know about his career? Ever since I was
- 19:33Speaker 1: a kid, all I heard was he was a He
- 19:35Speaker 1: was a heck of a football player growing up, you know,
- 19:37Speaker 1: so I just wanted to be just like him. You know,
- 19:39Speaker 1: as a child, if he played, if he was a fireman,
- 19:42Speaker 1: I probably wanted to be a fireman, you know what
- 19:43Speaker 1: I'm saying. But just him being that dominant move for
- 19:47Speaker 1: me playing football today, it's big, man. He played a
- 19:50Speaker 1: big part of that. I read somewhere that you got
- 19:53Speaker 1: your start throwing a mattress down on the floor with
- 19:55Speaker 1: your brother and practice tackling on that mattress. Is that
- 19:58Speaker 1: the case? Yeah, yeah, sir, we weren't just doing it
- 20:01Speaker 1: like we know we had. We liked it was kids.
- 20:02Speaker 1: We liked to dress up, so he had old old
- 20:05Speaker 1: football outfite. You know. We used to put on his
- 20:07Speaker 1: compressive shorts, you know, take the little tissue, told us
- 20:11Speaker 1: put him a sola past man. We was, our creativity was.
- 20:15Speaker 1: It was amazing as kids, man, but we just me
- 20:17Speaker 1: and my older brother. We just loved the game, man,
- 20:18Speaker 1: We loved it visiting the Christian Ringo. You went to
- 20:21Speaker 1: Louisiana lay the Raging Cajuns and set the single season
- 20:25Speaker 1: record there for sacks. What were some of the highlights
- 20:28Speaker 1: of your college experience, both on and off the field.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I definitely had to say my last player as a
- 20:34Speaker 1: Raging Cajun. You know, I was able, it was in
- 20:36Speaker 1: the waters ball, was able to get the sack. You know.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Those definitely my highlight. You know, because the guy that
- 20:41Speaker 1: had the record, he was skired to guard for the
- 20:44Speaker 1: UL still to this day, so he was on the
- 20:46Speaker 1: sideline with us. You know, it gave him a big hug.
- 20:49Speaker 1: It was an amazing feeling. But off the field, I
- 20:52Speaker 1: have to probably say go back to May second, twenty
- 20:55Speaker 1: fifteen when my name was called in the sixth round
- 20:57Speaker 1: to the Green Bay Packers. That's those a special moment
- 21:00Speaker 1: for me because not knowing that I was gonna even
- 21:02Speaker 1: you know, I know I was gonna get a chance,
- 21:04Speaker 1: but not knowing that my name is gonna get called,
- 21:06Speaker 1: you know, because my family gathered because if you can recall,
- 21:08Speaker 1: it was the Mayweather and pack Yah fight, so it
- 21:11Speaker 1: was really there for the fight. Slash draft draft party.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Would have got drafted, but since I got drafted, it
- 21:16Speaker 1: was a slash draft party. It was a good day.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Pretty emotional. No, it's crazy. I was the only one
- 21:22Speaker 1: that wasn't emotional. I was like, Okay, what's next. I
- 21:24Speaker 1: always set and do what I tell people. They like
- 21:26Speaker 1: they asked me questions, how do you feel about this?
- 21:28Speaker 1: And that? Like it ain't hear me yet. Maybe ten
- 21:30Speaker 1: years when I'm done on the couch with my kids,
- 21:32Speaker 1: I probably bust out crying and they're like, what's wrong
- 21:35Speaker 1: with you? Dad? I just sit back, remembin thisceing. But
- 21:37Speaker 1: I never had time to just sit and reminisce about
- 21:40Speaker 1: what would occurred. So we're doing fun factored Christian Ringo.
- 21:43Speaker 1: I noticed in your college career you wore the number nine,
- 21:46Speaker 1: which is unusual for a defensive lineman. How did you
- 21:49Speaker 1: wind up with a single digit number? Oh man? That
- 21:52Speaker 1: trend I forgot it was that trend was started. I
- 21:56Speaker 1: forgot when it was started. But I've seen a d
- 21:58Speaker 1: tackle a defensive man from Florida. He was number six.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I forgot his name. It made me feel special. I
- 22:03Speaker 1: want the only one. I had it to my roommate
- 22:05Speaker 1: justin Hamilton. He had six and I had the nine.
- 22:08Speaker 1: So man, it was it. It was a good year
- 22:10Speaker 1: for us day. As you mentioned, you were drafted by
- 22:14Speaker 1: the Green Bay Packers and spent some time playing in
- 22:17Speaker 1: Green Bay. What was it like for you to play
- 22:19Speaker 1: at lambeau Field and be part of that historic franchise.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I don't think I could. I was able to enjoy
- 22:24Speaker 1: it as much as I should have because I was
- 22:26Speaker 1: too focused on development. I was just trying my best
- 22:29Speaker 1: to just work day in the day out to become
- 22:31Speaker 1: a better player. Man. In one of your off seasons
- 22:34Speaker 1: with the Green Bay Packers, you're at a water park
- 22:37Speaker 1: in Houston. You saved a guy's life and he turned
- 22:40Speaker 1: out to be a Packers fan. You have to tell
- 22:42Speaker 1: the story. Oh man, So h was at the ward
- 22:46Speaker 1: was at the waving pools. I don't know if you noticed,
- 22:48Speaker 1: but like as the waves when they turned the wave on,
- 22:50Speaker 1: making like ocean like, you know, so it's not like
- 22:52Speaker 1: normal when they turn it off. So everybody had a
- 22:56Speaker 1: vest on life vest and it's one guy he didn't
- 22:58Speaker 1: have a life vest on. He was walking towards the
- 23:00Speaker 1: deep end, so I guess they turned the waves on,
- 23:04Speaker 1: so it kind of caught him off guard. So as
- 23:06Speaker 1: he was walking the first time, the water went over
- 23:08Speaker 1: his head and I was like, maybe he just enjoyed
- 23:10Speaker 1: the water, because I heard the sound like that, and like,
- 23:12Speaker 1: I was like, okay, maybe he just enjoying the water.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Then when you know, it bounced back. Then when it
- 23:16Speaker 1: came again, he just like he was struggling. So like,
- 23:18Speaker 1: so I grabbed his arm, just went five yards back
- 23:21Speaker 1: this way to the shadow end. I didn't think nothing
- 23:24Speaker 1: of it. I just you know, let him go. Soon
- 23:25Speaker 1: he catched his feet. He caught his feet. Oh he
- 23:29Speaker 1: saved my life. You saved my life. Thank god, thank you,
- 23:32Speaker 1: thank you, thank you. Thinking I'm like, okay, you know,
- 23:36Speaker 1: so it's crazy. On our way leaving the park, I
- 23:39Speaker 1: see the same guy. He was walking out. He had
- 23:41Speaker 1: a green bait. He at first he didn't have a
- 23:43Speaker 1: shirt on in the pool, but when he had put
- 23:44Speaker 1: his clothes back on, he had a green base shirt on.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I'm like, man, it's crazy, Like this gotta be like,
- 23:49Speaker 1: I gotta say something to him, because you know he
- 23:51Speaker 1: was a Packer fan at the time. You know, we
- 23:53Speaker 1: took pictures, I posted I'm incited, and you know, I
- 23:57Speaker 1: was able to get some exposure by NFL Network to
- 24:00Speaker 1: talk about it. So it was. It was a nice story. Though.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Last year, at the end of a training camp, the
- 24:05Speaker 1: Packers waived you. They were going to put you on
- 24:08Speaker 1: the practice squad, but the Bengals jumped in and grabbed you.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Had the opportunity to bring you over here, but then
- 24:13Speaker 1: they had a roster situation where they had to make
- 24:15Speaker 1: another move and they let you go after a week.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Did you have time here to get to know anybody,
- 24:21Speaker 1: to learn your way around anything? Not really. I know,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I know I've seen some face, some familiar faces now
- 24:27Speaker 1: that I'm back. You know, I had a chance to
- 24:29Speaker 1: say what up to him, but not really just get
- 24:30Speaker 1: a chance to norm. You know, it's I don't even
- 24:32Speaker 1: think it was a full week. It was like four
- 24:33Speaker 1: days because we had a short week because we had
- 24:35Speaker 1: a Thursday game that next remember last week we had
- 24:38Speaker 1: a third short week. Though it was a quick turnaround.
- 24:41Speaker 1: You had a camp for kids last summer back home
- 24:44Speaker 1: in Jackson, and you dubbed at his teaching football skills
- 24:47Speaker 1: and leadership skills? Why was that important to you? When
- 24:52Speaker 1: I reminisced and growing up, I didn't. I don't think
- 24:54Speaker 1: I didn't remember seeing too many professional athletes, you know,
- 24:58Speaker 1: giving camps and stuff like I remember do what Callister
- 25:01Speaker 1: would do his thing. But you know, it's a big state.
- 25:04Speaker 1: So I told myself the first thing I do when
- 25:07Speaker 1: so I get established, you know, I would want to
- 25:09Speaker 1: give back and show these kids what it's all about,
- 25:13Speaker 1: you know, just for us. Just like I'm from where
- 25:15Speaker 1: you from. I said, in the same classroom as you,
- 25:18Speaker 1: you could do the same exact thing, if not better.
- 25:20Speaker 1: And I have to be real with him. I'm like
- 25:22Speaker 1: I told him, I'll be a bold faced life. I
- 25:25Speaker 1: looked y'all all in your eyes and told y'all all,
- 25:27Speaker 1: y'all going to the NFL because it's not happening, you know,
- 25:29Speaker 1: but whatever your passion is, you know, so I can
- 25:33Speaker 1: show you the steps, the dedication it takes, you know,
- 25:36Speaker 1: to make it come true. That's awesome. A few more
- 25:39Speaker 1: questions for Christian Ringo. Do you have any skill that
- 25:43Speaker 1: most people don't know about it? Yeah, I can say
- 25:45Speaker 1: I got a skill that most people, my raging Cajun
- 25:48Speaker 1: fans know about it. You know, they know I'm a
- 25:49Speaker 1: little locker room down, so you know I can you know,
- 25:52Speaker 1: cut the rug a little bit. Big man's got some
- 25:54Speaker 1: sweet feet, yes, sir, all right, Well, I have to
- 25:57Speaker 1: double check with your family to see if that's act
- 26:00Speaker 1: good or not. It's the Christmas season. Do you have
- 26:02Speaker 1: an all time favorite Christmas present from when you were
- 26:05Speaker 1: a kid? Definitely easy. I have to say one of
- 26:10Speaker 1: year my posts gave us. We had Xbox three sixty
- 26:13Speaker 1: and the PS three I think it's a three year
- 26:16Speaker 1: PS three the same year, but he had both, got
- 26:19Speaker 1: both from from the pups. But he said, you can
- 26:21Speaker 1: either get a brand new one of them, or you
- 26:23Speaker 1: can get two smart. Me and my brother looked at
- 26:25Speaker 1: so you got the Xbox, I got the you know,
- 26:30Speaker 1: he got of games and stuff. So by far, that
- 26:32Speaker 1: had to be one of the best. Appreciate your time.
- 26:35Speaker 1: You're off the hot seat. Happy holidays, Happy holidays everyone.
