- 1:57Speaker 1: I am out of sorts because before anybody at me,
- 2:01Speaker 1: I got sick at the back end of last week,
- 2:03Speaker 1: so I didn't finish the background. Still in the process
- 2:06Speaker 1: of putting the new place together after we moved. I
- 2:10Speaker 1: did add a helmet, which is nice, and there's some
- 2:13Speaker 1: pictures and things behind me, but I didn't hang them.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Please don't yellow at me. So this is still This
- 2:17Speaker 1: will get fixed, This will be rectified before next week.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I'm not trying to pen myself into another commitment or
- 2:21Speaker 1: a promise that I can't keep, but that will come through.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I just wanted to state that before anybody yells at
- 2:26Speaker 1: me or anybody is disappointed. That's got me out of sorts.
- 2:29Speaker 1: The bills are out of sorts, and it's important that
- 2:31Speaker 1: the bills get back into sorts coming out of the
- 2:34Speaker 1: bye WEEKND. That is part of the theme of tonight's episode,
- 2:39Speaker 1: where we are going to dive into what the Buffalo
- 2:41Speaker 1: Bills need to start, stop and continue on both sides
- 2:45Speaker 1: of pall the offense and the defense. The age old
- 2:48Speaker 1: kind of progress support performance evaluation for individuals, and you
- 2:53Speaker 1: know you can apply here to sports, something that you
- 2:55Speaker 1: should continue to do, something you should start doing, something
- 2:57Speaker 1: you should stop doing. And the Bills have a lethor
- 3:00Speaker 1: ra of potential answers for start, stop and continue on
- 3:04Speaker 1: both sides of the ball. And to have that conversation,
- 3:08Speaker 1: I am joined by someone who and I tell myself
- 3:13Speaker 1: this every time, and I'm mad that I didn't do it,
- 3:16Speaker 1: But he's extending his record number of appearances on this show.
- 3:20Speaker 1: But this time, this time, this is the first appearance
- 3:24Speaker 1: for this guest in which he has his new gig.
- 3:27Speaker 1: So without further ado, I am joined by mister JP Acosta,
- 3:32Speaker 1: NFL analyst now at CBS Sports, no longer with SB Nation.
- 3:38Speaker 1: You are on TV, you are writing, you're on the
- 3:41Speaker 1: pushing the pile pod like you are just doing onward
- 3:45Speaker 1: and upward for everything you do. One of the best
- 3:47Speaker 1: in the business. You sincerely deserve it. Thank you for
- 3:49Speaker 1: taking the time to join me, especially now that again
- 3:53Speaker 1: you're up there rubbing shoulders with all the big wags.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I appreciate you taking the time no rock with.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Me, of course, thank you for having me has gotta
- 4:00Speaker 2: make time from a favorite Bills podcast, my favorite Bills discussions.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I always tell people, if you're looking for Bills coverage,
- 4:07Speaker 2: you go right here, you go to my you go
- 4:09Speaker 2: to my man. Here, we're gonna get We're gonna get
- 4:11Speaker 2: some real good Bills talk out the way and it's
- 4:13Speaker 2: gonna be really fun. So it make sure you stay
- 4:15Speaker 2: with us.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Thank you for the kind words. It's
- 4:18Speaker 1: very nice to hear. Kind words aren't something that a
- 4:23Speaker 1: lot of Bills fans are giving to the Buffalo Bills
- 4:25Speaker 1: right now. But for you, you take a look at
- 4:31Speaker 1: the league across. You know, I obviously have a heavy
- 4:34Speaker 1: Bills focus, but I grind a lot of tape league wide.
- 4:37Speaker 1: You grind even more tape league wide. You are seeing
- 4:40Speaker 1: everything from that consistent, high level view across the league.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Before we dive into the details here on this one
- 4:46Speaker 1: of again the start stops and continues and scheme structure
- 4:50Speaker 1: player stuff like we do here, especially whenever I have
- 4:52Speaker 1: you on the show. From your league wide perspective, where
- 4:56Speaker 1: are the Bills at for you right now, especially after
- 4:59Speaker 1: you know where you I think also kind of put
- 5:01Speaker 1: in the backdrop of they were four and oh I
- 5:04Speaker 1: wasn't holistically a huge believer in that furnao after they
- 5:07Speaker 1: lost those two, I'm still not really on the ledge
- 5:11Speaker 1: a lot of fans are. They saw those losses and
- 5:13Speaker 1: were like, they're done, it's over. Where does this team
- 5:17Speaker 1: stand for you? Are they still in that contenders mix?
- 5:19Speaker 1: Are they still in that heavy conversation or do you
- 5:23Speaker 1: think the faltering and the flaws or vulnerabilities that we've
- 5:27Speaker 1: seen are potentially too much to overcome? And this is
- 5:30Speaker 1: there's more red flags that are kind of being talked about.
- 5:33Speaker 2: So I think there's a little bit of both where
- 5:38Speaker 2: look that the Bills are still one of the best
- 5:41Speaker 2: teams in the NFL because they have two of the
- 5:43Speaker 2: biggest advantages in the NFL. They have Josh Allen, who
- 5:46Speaker 2: is one of the three to four mutants at quarterback
- 5:49Speaker 2: that you can really say like, yeah, that guy can
- 5:51Speaker 2: go win us football games. And you also still have
- 5:54Speaker 2: one of the best offensive lines in football that's going
- 5:57Speaker 2: to continue to why they we talk about margins for
- 6:00Speaker 2: you're gonna widen that margin for air by having Josh
- 6:03Speaker 2: Allen and the offensive line playing as well as they
- 6:05Speaker 2: do in that run game, operating as well as they do.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So I still think they are one of the best
- 6:10Speaker 2: teams in the NFL. Now, if you were to ask
- 6:13Speaker 2: me to rank those best teams in the NFL, I
- 6:15Speaker 2: do think the Bills will be kind of on that
- 6:18Speaker 2: fringe of their near the bottom because I still worry
- 6:24Speaker 2: the same issues that they had last year carried over
- 6:28Speaker 2: to this year, and most of those issues when you
- 6:33Speaker 2: go back and look at some of the things that
- 6:34Speaker 2: they can do to solve those issues, I don't know
- 6:38Speaker 2: if you can solve them this year. I don't know
- 6:40Speaker 2: if this is the year that you can really go
- 6:42Speaker 2: and say like, Oh, we're gonna go add this guy
- 6:45Speaker 2: at the trade deadline. Oh we're gonna get a second
- 6:47Speaker 2: half surge from this guy. So I'm a little worried
- 6:50Speaker 2: about the defense specifically. I know a lot of people
- 6:54Speaker 2: are gonna be really, like really worried about the receiver spot,
- 6:57Speaker 2: and I understand, especially coming off of the Atlanta game.
- 7:01Speaker 2: But the Bill's best receiver did not play in that game.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Don Ky Kid did not play in that game. That
- 7:07Speaker 2: is there, that's their receiver like everybody else, like Kean Coleman,
- 7:11Speaker 2: is basically a tight end right now, you don Kin
- 7:14Speaker 2: kid is your receiver. He's the guy that you designed
- 7:17Speaker 2: targets for against man coverage. He's the one that goes
- 7:20Speaker 2: and to phrase better, he's the one who goes and
- 7:22Speaker 2: gets you a bucket. So against the Falcons team that
- 7:26Speaker 2: knew you didn't have any bucket getters downfield, of course
- 7:29Speaker 2: they could blitch you. Of Course they could really turn
- 7:32Speaker 2: this team into a pincushion because they didn't have all
- 7:34Speaker 2: their targets. So I'm not as worried about the receiver group.
- 7:39Speaker 2: I do think adding some more speed on the outside
- 7:42Speaker 2: would really help sort of loosen up the offense a
- 7:45Speaker 2: little bit. But I'm more worried about a defense where
- 7:48Speaker 2: I don't know if some of the things you can
- 7:50Speaker 2: add can be added right.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Now, that's such a perfect lead in and like such
- 7:56Speaker 1: a I'm so frustrated you and I I talked about
- 8:00Speaker 1: so I'm assuming several of so for those who don't know,
- 8:04Speaker 1: I don't know JP's start, stops and continues. I'm gonna
- 8:07Speaker 1: weave mine into his to make sure that we don't
- 8:10Speaker 1: go for two and a half or three hours like
- 8:12Speaker 1: we normally do whenever we get together. But I don't
- 8:14Speaker 1: know his answers, he doesn't know mine, but I feel
- 8:17Speaker 1: like a good chunk of them are gonna be things
- 8:19Speaker 1: that we talked about last year when I had you
- 8:21Speaker 1: on the show multiple times, when we to what we
- 8:23Speaker 1: talked about in season, during the playoffs, in the off season,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and for me, a person who lives with this team
- 8:31Speaker 1: every day and watches every snap every week multitude of times, man,
- 8:38Speaker 1: it's frustrating to even broach some of the topics we're
- 8:43Speaker 1: gonna talk about tonight and broke several of the pieces
- 8:45Speaker 1: that you alluded to, because it was just it, and
- 8:49Speaker 1: it's the joke I make all the time, the Michael
- 8:51Speaker 1: Scott and Pam moment from the office where she's like,
- 8:54Speaker 1: you know, Michael stopped dating my mom and he's like,
- 8:55Speaker 1: I'm just gonna date her harder. And that's what the
- 8:57Speaker 1: Bills did. This year was really or this past off
- 8:59Speaker 1: season was really like, you know, we've got some issues here,
- 9:02Speaker 1: and we've got some issues here, and it's like, oh,
- 9:05Speaker 1: should we do something different directify It's like, no, we're
- 9:07Speaker 1: just gonna do what we're already doing there and just
- 9:09Speaker 1: do it harder. Like okay, it's like, oh, so you
- 9:12Speaker 1: you don't want to maybe like mitigate displacement on the
- 9:15Speaker 1: interior defensive line and to eat up some Nope, more penetration.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Well that's all we're gonna do, just souped up penetration. Okay,
- 9:22Speaker 1: you were kind of Yeah, maybe maybe you didn't really
- 9:24Speaker 1: have enough speed on the outside and vertical presence or
- 9:26Speaker 1: guys who could truly win one on one on the outside.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Maybe you want to address that for the offense. Nope,
- 9:32Speaker 1: we're good. It's like, oh, all right, maybe maybe having
- 9:35Speaker 1: like two box safeties as you're starting safeties and having
- 9:39Speaker 1: two guys who aren't really good deep for a variety
- 9:43Speaker 1: of reasons, maybe that's not a great safety combot. No,
- 9:45Speaker 1: we're just gonna stick to that and role. It's like, okay, cool.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And having all of these things, like all these chickens
- 9:50Speaker 1: come to roost seemingly in the last two weeks. It's
- 9:54Speaker 1: hilariously ironic or painfully ironic, I should say. Now, the
- 9:58Speaker 1: Bills stumbled out of the gate last year after starting
- 10:01Speaker 1: out three and oh they got smacked by the Ravens.
- 10:04Speaker 1: They got smacked by the Texans they traded for Mary
- 10:07Speaker 1: Cooper wasn't really that same level over Mary Cooper. Plus
- 10:09Speaker 1: he was hurt, but his presence opened some things up.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Who knows, maybe they can in my dream, in my
- 10:15Speaker 1: dreamiest of dreams. I know every Bills fan is saying this,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and a lot of people are kind of picking the
- 10:20Speaker 1: bones of the Saints. But if they could get Chris Olave,
- 10:22Speaker 1: I'd be very happy. I would take Rashid Shaheed, even
- 10:25Speaker 1: though his name is a tongue twister all the time.
- 10:27Speaker 1: But give me the dude who can fly. Rocking twenty
- 10:29Speaker 1: two is a receiver number so sick and the speed
- 10:32Speaker 1: he has, like they just they need some injection there.
- 10:35Speaker 1: But to your point, unless like there's no there's nobody
- 10:39Speaker 1: that's walking through that's going to drastically change their problem areas,
- 10:44Speaker 1: Like they can hope to get healthier, hope to get
- 10:46Speaker 1: some guys back, and then you can make according tweaks.
- 10:50Speaker 1: But their biggest pain points from a player standpoint, they
- 10:56Speaker 1: really kind of have to dance with who brought them,
- 10:59Speaker 1: and that's it's really like tough to kind of work around.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Yeah, like it's good, it's gonna be something. We're gonna
- 11:07Speaker 2: talk about later. But if you're looking to sit here,
- 11:09Speaker 2: if you want to say, like, yeah, we can add
- 11:11Speaker 2: safety help at the deadline. Who dah right who? Most
- 11:15Speaker 2: of the good safeties are the ones that are locked
- 11:17Speaker 2: up for a while.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I was gonna say, what are you gonna do, Like, oh,
- 11:19Speaker 1: we're gonna trade for Jesse Bates? Like do you all again?
- 11:22Speaker 1: No one's giving up those dudes.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Like yeah, it would be I think it'd be awesome
- 11:26Speaker 2: if you're traded for Jesse Bates, or like in a
- 11:29Speaker 2: perfect world you go get Kyle Hamilton. But everybody wants
- 11:32Speaker 2: Kyle Hamilton, like of course they want to go try
- 11:35Speaker 2: and get that guy. But the issues with the Bills
- 11:38Speaker 2: defense is they also they don't have the players, but
- 11:43Speaker 2: they also don't have the scheme to benefit the players.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Dude, it's so like they're playing a defense based on
- 11:49Speaker 1: like like, well, we're just gonna run simplistic things and
- 11:52Speaker 1: use our horses, but you don't have the horses, and
- 11:54Speaker 1: then you don't have the schematic advantage or the structure
- 11:57Speaker 1: to compensate for that, so you're you're just chased in
- 12:00Speaker 1: your tail with the Jimmies and Joe's and the X's
- 12:02Speaker 1: and ops.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you were constantly on the back foot of opposing
- 12:06Speaker 2: defensive of opposing offenses because you still can't stop the run.
- 12:12Speaker 2: You're they've been one of the worst tackling teams, I
- 12:14Speaker 2: think in the league this year.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Oh, I've got stats. They're they're terrible.
- 12:19Speaker 2: They've been one of the worst tackling units in the
- 12:21Speaker 2: league this year. And because of that, you can run
- 12:23Speaker 2: all this play action because your safeties are slow or
- 12:28Speaker 2: in Cole Bishop's case, well like football right now, like
- 12:35Speaker 2: he's he still likes like looks like the game is
- 12:37Speaker 2: like still fast for him, it looks like it's still fast.
- 12:41Speaker 1: He's still learning how to see the game from that
- 12:43Speaker 1: death head. You at Utah, Him and Stoney Vaki were sweet,
- 12:46Speaker 1: but they were both like apax more box safety dudes.
- 12:49Speaker 1: They dropped deep every once in a while, but they
- 12:51Speaker 1: were more like monster men in and around the line
- 12:53Speaker 1: in the box. He's learning how to have to play
- 12:56Speaker 1: stingle high post safety and like deep from a split field. Look,
- 12:59Speaker 1: how to see the game, read route distributions, process the angles,
- 13:03Speaker 1: fitting the run from there, all of it very spot on.
- 13:06Speaker 2: And if you're hoping you're hoping to get Maxwell Harston back,
- 13:10Speaker 2: which would be great for that corner room. But we're
- 13:13Speaker 2: assuming that Harriston is immediately like, very.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Good, He's got it. Yeah, he won't have to get
- 13:20Speaker 1: up the speed at all. He's gonna step in and
- 13:22Speaker 1: ready to go.
- 13:22Speaker 2: But it's it's tough because you all you see like, oh,
- 13:26Speaker 2: well Quenya Mitchell did last year. That's not the same
- 13:29Speaker 2: Like Quenyan Mitchell is a rare like player, you know,
- 13:32Speaker 2: like you don't those guys don't really come along that often.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Hairston is a guy that needs to go and play,
- 13:39Speaker 2: that needs to go and figure out the speed of
- 13:40Speaker 2: the game because his game is so reliant on his
- 13:43Speaker 2: eyes and reactive quickness. He's such a good zone player.
- 13:47Speaker 2: But in college it was good because every zone was
- 13:50Speaker 2: wide open. Like every zone, he could close those zones
- 13:54Speaker 2: a lot quicker in college because not every quarterback can
- 13:57Speaker 2: fit those passes in the windows. Now you're facing guys
- 14:01Speaker 2: who can actually get those passes into NFL windows. That's
- 14:04Speaker 2: gonna take a little bit of time. And then I mean,
- 14:08Speaker 2: I've we've talked about my issues with them up front
- 14:11Speaker 2: because they sort of just they have the same type
- 14:14Speaker 2: of player. It's like, I hate to make like the
- 14:17Speaker 2: wrestling reference. Actually, I don't hate it.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Act.
- 14:22Speaker 2: It feels like, you know how they had like during
- 14:24Speaker 2: like the Triple H's Reign of Terror, how every match
- 14:27Speaker 2: ended the same, where you have like Rick Flair, rand
- 14:30Speaker 2: Yorton Batista all run out, A raft is taking a bump,
- 14:33Speaker 2: Charles Robinson is running from this from the backstage to
- 14:37Speaker 2: come count, to make the count. That's what the Bills
- 14:40Speaker 2: feel like they're doing every week. It feels like nothing,
- 14:43Speaker 2: nothing is going to change with this team. And I
- 14:45Speaker 2: think it's cool that they've gotten the Deon Walkers splash plays,
- 14:49Speaker 2: but the issue is they don't have gap control. Deon
- 14:52Speaker 2: Walker is not a gap control defensive tackle. You might
- 14:54Speaker 2: think so because he is massive, but he wins with quickness.
- 14:58Speaker 2: He doesn't win with pure power and gap control because
- 15:02Speaker 2: he's so. He has such a tall like torso it's
- 15:07Speaker 2: gonna take a long time for him to drop his
- 15:09Speaker 2: hips because there's just a lot of body.
- 15:12Speaker 1: You know, you can hear like metal on metal scraping
- 15:15Speaker 1: when he tries to, like it's like watching a giant
- 15:17Speaker 1: tractor trailer like turn a corner or something like that.
- 15:19Speaker 1: It just doesn't move that weight.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it is like asking, like the Iron Giant, the
- 15:23Speaker 2: two gap right, it's tough, it's tough. It's it's gonna
- 15:27Speaker 2: be really tough for him to get down like that.
- 15:30Speaker 2: So you need somebody who can really actually hold some
- 15:33Speaker 2: gaps because of how fast flowing this defense is. It's
- 15:37Speaker 2: the same issue the Texans have in their run defense,
- 15:40Speaker 2: which is everybody's upfield so quickly. You can run gap
- 15:44Speaker 2: scheme at them, you can run trap and way I'm
- 15:46Speaker 2: at them. Because everybody's so fast up the field, nobody
- 15:49Speaker 2: knows what they're doing, and you're ripping off eight yards
- 15:51Speaker 2: of play. But the thing about the Texans is they
- 15:55Speaker 2: have aces everywhere.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Yep.
- 15:58Speaker 2: They have Dereksti Lassiter, they have Will Anderson Junior and
- 16:02Speaker 2: Daniel Hunter like. They have guys where it just doesn't matter.
- 16:05Speaker 2: They have impact players there. Even with the Browns, you
- 16:09Speaker 2: have Miles Garrett, you have Denzel Ward. They have guys
- 16:12Speaker 2: that flip the field, that flip the game. The Bills
- 16:16Speaker 2: have good players. I'm not saying that the Bills are
- 16:19Speaker 2: not a talented defense. They have talented players, but you're
- 16:23Speaker 2: they're constantly relying on the Ed Oliver destruction game, Like
- 16:29Speaker 2: you hope for him to be your best pass rusher
- 16:32Speaker 2: and best run defender at maybe two hundred and eighty
- 16:35Speaker 2: five pounds, it's just gonna take a lot on the body.
- 16:38Speaker 2: And you worry because he's already missed time. You worry
- 16:41Speaker 2: with Matt Mulano having already missed time, You worry with
- 16:44Speaker 2: Terrell Bernard already missing time. You're just gonna get to
- 16:48Speaker 2: the playoffs and not enough bodies.
- 16:51Speaker 1: That's fair. I hate, I love, and I hate so
- 16:54Speaker 1: much that the Bills and that the Bills interior construction
- 16:58Speaker 1: is essentially the triple a train of time and ending
- 17:01Speaker 1: after ending, and that's so spot on it I hate it.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Or like the initially how like the whole death Rider
- 17:06Speaker 1: angle started out for aw was like again, every week,
- 17:09Speaker 1: they're just gonna interfere one by one, We're gonna do
- 17:10Speaker 1: this for six months. Yeah, it's And that's such a
- 17:14Speaker 1: good point too. On the this ties into one of
- 17:17Speaker 1: my points, so I don't want to give up too much.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Actually a lot of what you said ties on to
- 17:20Speaker 1: my points. But the way that they've drafted and built
- 17:26Speaker 1: this team, they have a good roster, like they have
- 17:29Speaker 1: good players, but they don't have the top tier s
- 17:32Speaker 1: tier game changers, you know, the one on one bucket
- 17:37Speaker 1: getters everywhere that are like the established, like Okay, we
- 17:39Speaker 1: got this guy, we got that guy, especially when you've
- 17:42Speaker 1: been going toe to toe with the teams that you
- 17:45Speaker 1: lost against, especially even for years with like the Chiefs.
- 17:48Speaker 1: For a while it was like, well they got Mahomes
- 17:50Speaker 1: and it's like Mahomes and like Humphrey's crazy like as
- 17:54Speaker 1: an all pro, and then like Trey Smith, and then
- 17:56Speaker 1: it's like you might not even really need them. It's
- 17:58Speaker 1: just Mahomes and Chris Jones. And then it was like
- 18:00Speaker 1: Chris Jones and Trent McDuffie, and then you would get
- 18:04Speaker 1: the and like those are legit all pros right there.
- 18:06Speaker 1: But then you get big splash plays from Justin Reid
- 18:09Speaker 1: and you'd get them from Bolton, or before that it
- 18:11Speaker 1: was Tyron Matthew being like an assassin for them for
- 18:13Speaker 1: a couple of years, or Shabarius Ward was on the
- 18:16Speaker 1: up and coming and then got a huge contract. They
- 18:17Speaker 1: just couldn't keep them. Like having the Difference Makers, they've
- 18:21Speaker 1: got a whole their roster is constructed out of a
- 18:24Speaker 1: whole bunch of like B minus to like B maybe
- 18:27Speaker 1: B plus guys, which is cool, like, and that's across
- 18:30Speaker 1: the board. You don't really have a ton of deficiencies,
- 18:33Speaker 1: but you don't have those difference makers. You don't have
- 18:35Speaker 1: those game changers. And when you're playing, especially defensively, when
- 18:39Speaker 1: you're playing a scheme in structure that isn't overly complex schematically,
- 18:46Speaker 1: when it's just like, yeah, we're running a four down
- 18:49Speaker 1: over front, playing a bunch of cover three behind it.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Like this is Sean McDermott. And I've said this before,
- 18:56Speaker 1: I'll say to you Sean McDermott wants to play this,
- 18:58Speaker 1: which is crazy. And I'm about to say this because
- 19:00Speaker 1: because he studied at the feet of Jim Johnson for
- 19:03Speaker 1: those Eagles teams, and Jim Johnson was a maniac. Those
- 19:05Speaker 1: defenses hit you in the mouth, they blitzed fire zones,
- 19:09Speaker 1: a whole bunch of crazy stuff for the Eagles at
- 19:10Speaker 1: the time. But McDermott went to a Super Bowl with
- 19:14Speaker 1: the Panthers. We're just gonna run four rush for We're
- 19:19Speaker 1: gonna use them to really control gaps against the run,
- 19:21Speaker 1: and then we're gonna play coverage behind it. The problem
- 19:22Speaker 1: with that is you had arguably like the greatest linebacker
- 19:26Speaker 1: of all time, or one of them in Luke Keagley,
- 19:29Speaker 1: which is not an overexaggeration to say. Next to him
- 19:32Speaker 1: was another All Pro in Thomas Davis. Next to both
- 19:36Speaker 1: of them was Shaq Thompson, who was a young up
- 19:39Speaker 1: and coming All Pro himself. Then you had an All
- 19:42Speaker 1: Pro corner who was tremendous in Cover three like Josh Norman.
- 19:46Speaker 1: And then up front you had Kawan Short who was
- 19:49Speaker 1: one of the best defensive tackles in all of football.
- 19:51Speaker 1: You had Charles Johnson, you had Jared Allen, you had
- 19:54Speaker 1: assassins and hitters. Up front, you had all pros on
- 19:58Speaker 1: your back end. It's even similar to kind of like
- 20:01Speaker 1: I don't want to compare it to these, but like
- 20:03Speaker 1: the when you're just gonna run a basic, simplified structure
- 20:07Speaker 1: like the Legion of Boom Cover three or the Tampa
- 20:09Speaker 1: two Tampa two, think of the dudes who are in
- 20:13Speaker 1: those systems, Like those dudes were Hall of famers, but
- 20:15Speaker 1: they also fit that system perfectly. Everybody and everybody knows
- 20:19Speaker 1: the story. Now everyone and their mother tried to well.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Cover three is the meta. Let's run Cover three, but
- 20:24Speaker 1: nobody has Cam Chancellors and Earl Thomas's and Bobby Wagner's
- 20:28Speaker 1: and Richard Sherman's or let alone the penetrating front that
- 20:31Speaker 1: they had where everybody could get after you at any
- 20:34Speaker 1: moment and slice and dice you up front. So they
- 20:37Speaker 1: had the scheme paired with the bodies to go with it.
- 20:40Speaker 1: The I think the bills are trying to essentially do
- 20:42Speaker 1: that where it's like, hey, we're just gonna rely on
- 20:44Speaker 1: our horses up front. It's like, but you don't have
- 20:45Speaker 1: the horses up front, and then you don't have the
- 20:48Speaker 1: horses on the back end, and you're not combating that
- 20:50Speaker 1: with Okay, well we're gonna run a ton of sims,
- 20:52Speaker 1: or we're gonna change our front structure. It's like, no,
- 20:54Speaker 1: we're just we're gonna do a four down over front
- 20:57Speaker 1: and we're gonna, you know, we'll bring a safety down
- 20:59Speaker 1: and try and you know, load the box more and
- 21:01Speaker 1: play numbers and rumplits. But then that still screws you
- 21:04Speaker 1: because that means either Bishop or rat has to play
- 21:06Speaker 1: in the post, and neither of them were built to
- 21:08Speaker 1: fit the post. And it's just, oh, it is a.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Or in the scenario that we saw the last time,
- 21:14Speaker 2: the Bill's played. You spin one of those guys into
- 21:17Speaker 2: the box and they just can't tackle yep, and they
- 21:20Speaker 2: just miss on every tackle in the box, which again,
- 21:24Speaker 2: if you are going to be the box safety, if
- 21:26Speaker 2: you are going to be the tackling guy, you need
- 21:29Speaker 2: to make a tackle.
- 21:32Speaker 1: That's crazy too that they're like bringing because last year
- 21:35Speaker 1: the run defense was an issue last year just like
- 21:37Speaker 1: it was this year. But last year when they brought
- 21:40Speaker 1: bodies and they gapped out, they shut down the run.
- 21:43Speaker 1: The Lions game is the great example. They came out
- 21:45Speaker 1: with like literally nine dudes in the box to start with,
- 21:47Speaker 1: like you're not running against us, and they shut it
- 21:50Speaker 1: down right away, got out to that lead, forced the
- 21:53Speaker 1: Lions away from the run. The Lions passed it on
- 21:56Speaker 1: him a ton and made it close at the end.
- 21:58Speaker 1: But when they chose to gap out, now they got
- 22:01Speaker 1: the job done. Even when they're gapping out this year,
- 22:03Speaker 1: they're not getting the job done. It's not like, okay,
- 22:05Speaker 1: well we'll bring a safety down, we'll put eight in
- 22:07Speaker 1: the box, will stop the run. You're still not and
- 22:10Speaker 1: then you're having issues on coverage tied to that, and
- 22:12Speaker 1: it's very potentially scary conversation for this team not to
- 22:17Speaker 1: paint too dark of a picture. Who knows, maybe we'll
- 22:19Speaker 1: get to some positives in this episode. Again, one of
- 22:21Speaker 1: the things we have is a continue, so that means
- 22:24Speaker 1: good things must be happening. We do want them to
- 22:26Speaker 1: continue some things. JP, let's dive into the crux of
- 22:30Speaker 1: this episode, the meat of this episode. For those who
- 22:33Speaker 1: don't know, JP and I are doing a start, stop,
- 22:36Speaker 1: and continue for the Buffalo Bills on defense and on offense.
- 22:39Speaker 1: So things they should start doing, stop doing, continue to do.
- 22:42Speaker 1: It could be player related, it could be scheme related.
- 22:44Speaker 1: It could be anything and everything, high level, wide scale, granular.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Jpe are the guest. Do you want to start with offense?
- 22:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna give you the choice. You can either start
- 22:54Speaker 1: with offense or defense. Whichever you pick, we'll go through
- 22:57Speaker 1: that side of the ball completely. You can pick offense
- 22:59Speaker 1: or defense and pick whichever of the three you want
- 23:03Speaker 1: to start with.
- 23:04Speaker 2: I'm going to go with offense, and I'm gonna go
- 23:07Speaker 2: with start spamming play action. Oh okay, I think the
- 23:12Speaker 2: Bills have been so good using play action, especially when
- 23:17Speaker 2: they get into their bigger personnel. When you get hauls,
- 23:20Speaker 2: when you get knocks, we get kincaid, you need to
- 23:22Speaker 2: put Reggie Gilliam on the field and you can still
- 23:24Speaker 2: run some really cool play action stuff, but they just
- 23:28Speaker 2: don't do it often. According to NFL Pro, Josh Allen
- 23:32Speaker 2: is fourth in the NFL and EPA per drop back
- 23:34Speaker 2: using play action, which is awesome, But he is also
- 23:39Speaker 2: twenty first in play action dropbacks in play action passing attempts,
- 23:44Speaker 2: that is down there with the likes of c. J.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Stroud and Jalen Hurts, and the Eagles don't use play actions.
- 23:52Speaker 2: That's like their entire thing. They don't use play action.
- 23:55Speaker 2: So with the way that you're able to run the ball,
- 23:58Speaker 2: with how dynamic you can be with Josh Allen as
- 24:00Speaker 2: a passer now, and with some of the limitations that
- 24:04Speaker 2: you have in the receiver corps and at the tight
- 24:07Speaker 2: end spot, you have to manufacture touches. You have to
- 24:10Speaker 2: manufacture explosives in a different way. I think that they've
- 24:14Speaker 2: done and Joe Brady's done a very good job of
- 24:16Speaker 2: manufacturing explosives via numbers, the emotions and shifts, that's what
- 24:21Speaker 2: he does. Like I you could like count on like
- 24:24Speaker 2: your hands, like how many like of the signature plays
- 24:26Speaker 2: they run where they have like four strong or they
- 24:29Speaker 2: run mesh or they do some sort of orbit and
- 24:33Speaker 2: return motion that's like their thing. But with the way
- 24:36Speaker 2: their offensive line runs the ball, with the way that
- 24:39Speaker 2: Josh Allen can attack defenses downfield using play action to
- 24:43Speaker 2: just pry open windows, make make defenses account for the
- 24:49Speaker 2: run before just spamming over outs, and now'll get your
- 24:52Speaker 2: receivers all involved a little bit more. They'll be able
- 24:55Speaker 2: to get your tight ends involved a little bit more.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Like it just feels like it'll open up so many
- 24:59Speaker 2: more things for the offense.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Oh I love that point. That's music to my ears. Yeah,
- 25:04Speaker 1: they are from a team level. They are twenty fourth
- 25:11Speaker 1: in play action rate, had some obviously some reps in
- 25:15Speaker 1: there for Mitch Trubisky this year at twenty point eight percent,
- 25:18Speaker 1: and it's they were low last year. I think they
- 25:21Speaker 1: had a play action rate of eighteen percent and they
- 25:23Speaker 1: were twenty eighth in the league. Like it was just
- 25:25Speaker 1: criminally low for how good of a running team they are.
- 25:28Speaker 1: And then you looked at all the other good running
- 25:30Speaker 1: teams and they were towards the top of the league.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Like I really thought they would operate more in line
- 25:36Speaker 1: with like what the Lions were last year with benchouts,
- 25:38Speaker 1: or even the Lions like this year, right, You've got
- 25:39Speaker 1: heavier personnel, You've got these bigger, thicker wide receivers and
- 25:42Speaker 1: condensed formations. You run the football super good. The natural
- 25:46Speaker 1: extension play action. Like you hear that from the time
- 25:50Speaker 1: you're like three years old and you start watching football.
- 25:53Speaker 1: As soon as the team starts running the ball, the
- 25:55Speaker 1: analyst is like, gotta watch out for play action now
- 25:58Speaker 1: because now you're vulnerable now that you have to re
- 26:00Speaker 1: back the run and blah blah blah blah blah. That
- 26:02Speaker 1: should just be like a weekly healthscape for defenses because
- 26:05Speaker 1: it's like, oh, we got to stop the run on
- 26:07Speaker 1: now we're getting sucked into play action. And that also
- 26:09Speaker 1: ties into Dalton Kinkaid being the like the folkrum or
- 26:14Speaker 1: the tip of the spear of that passing offense. I uh,
- 26:17Speaker 1: that's part of the play action piece is a caveat
- 26:21Speaker 1: and part of my continue I like yours a lot.
- 26:24Speaker 1: I'm gonnagain. I'm gonna try and keep mine brief and
- 26:27Speaker 1: not go too crazy, especially if we talk about some things.
- 26:29Speaker 1: My start is kind of happened a bit already. But
- 26:32Speaker 1: I think that the Bills office needs to start running
- 26:35Speaker 1: the offense through the Josh Allen's account. Running the offense
- 26:38Speaker 1: through these three players, James Cook, Khalil Shakir, and Dalton Kinkaid.
- 26:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna start with Shakir as the main Shakiro right
- 26:45Speaker 1: now has thirty two targets through six games. In twenty
- 26:49Speaker 1: twenty four, he had twenty one targets through the first
- 26:52Speaker 1: six games, so not a lot an average of three
- 26:54Speaker 1: point five per per game. Game seven through the A
- 26:59Speaker 1: or Week seven through the AFC Championship. Last year, thirteen
- 27:02Speaker 1: games for Khalil Shakir ninety four targets, an average of
- 27:05Speaker 1: seven point two to three per game, double what he
- 27:08Speaker 1: was for the first six weeks. He needs a similar
- 27:12Speaker 1: uptick right now. He's averaging about five point two targets
- 27:15Speaker 1: per game. Right now. He needs to be the schematic
- 27:18Speaker 1: move guy that they use and a ligne and just
- 27:20Speaker 1: get him the ball. He needs to start out as
- 27:23Speaker 1: that easy button guy. He gets the ball, he he
- 27:26Speaker 1: reminds me. Now, I've always said he's like a running
- 27:29Speaker 1: back once he gets the ball in his hands. This
- 27:30Speaker 1: goes back to the Boise State days. I really do
- 27:33Speaker 1: think when the ball is in his hands. He looks
- 27:35Speaker 1: like the wide receiver equivalent of Bucky Irving. They have
- 27:39Speaker 1: similar movements, body types, low center of gravity, physicality. You
- 27:43Speaker 1: just it's hard to get him down. He's shifty, he's explosive.
- 27:48Speaker 1: You can manufacture such cheap yardage by just let me
- 27:51Speaker 1: just spit it to Shakir and you know what, I'll
- 27:53Speaker 1: spit it to him two yards behind the line. He'll
- 27:55Speaker 1: get five and it'll be second and seven. But he
- 27:57Speaker 1: can like he'll find you something on enough and even
- 28:00Speaker 1: if if there's a little something there, he'll find you more.
- 28:04Speaker 1: He's got to be more of a focal point than
- 28:06Speaker 1: he is. He needs to be more of an easy
- 28:07Speaker 1: button than he is, especially with the pass game and
- 28:11Speaker 1: with Kincaid. And I say that because I think Kincaid
- 28:14Speaker 1: overall should be the tip of the spear. The mismatch creation.
- 28:18Speaker 1: You and I have talked You and I have talked
- 28:19Speaker 1: about for two seasons in a row now at this
- 28:22Speaker 1: point we talked about it. Oh, I don't remember what
- 28:25Speaker 1: game we were talking about it on Blue Sky. I
- 28:26Speaker 1: think maybe during the Bills Thursday night game against Miami
- 28:29Speaker 1: or one of the other games. Talking about have your
- 28:31Speaker 1: personnel play action using him as the explosive generator. My
- 28:35Speaker 1: only issue with that is nothing schematic, nothing. He just
- 28:38Speaker 1: gets hurt. He gets banged up, so you can't holistically
- 28:42Speaker 1: rely on him when he is in there the passing.
- 28:44Speaker 1: The pass game should go through Kincaid and it should
- 28:47Speaker 1: go through Shaki. It started to go through Kincaid already
- 28:51Speaker 1: this year. He is He's had an uptick inefficiency, but
- 28:54Speaker 1: the targets are not there. He needs to be like
- 28:58Speaker 1: at wide receiver two level of targets, even though he's
- 29:01Speaker 1: really their wide receiver one. So you got to focus
- 29:04Speaker 1: the pass game funnels through Kincaid and Shakir completely, and
- 29:08Speaker 1: then you lean on James Cook, which they kind of
- 29:10Speaker 1: have to a degree. I think they're trying to keep
- 29:12Speaker 1: him fresh and not completely wearing down, which is understandable.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I don't love having you to lean on my running
- 29:17Speaker 1: back already in the middle of October, because health and
- 29:22Speaker 1: playoff performance and all that kind of stuff. But they
- 29:26Speaker 1: this is the bed that they made and they have
- 29:28Speaker 1: to lie in it. It's gotta be these three because
- 29:30Speaker 1: of what they offer in combination of talent, schematic advantage,
- 29:34Speaker 1: and mismatch capability. I think Josh Palmer is a very
- 29:37Speaker 1: fine role player. I think Kean Coleman can be a
- 29:41Speaker 1: very fine role player. But the passing offense needs to
- 29:44Speaker 1: go through Kincaid and Shakir. They don't have the horses
- 29:47Speaker 1: to consistently win outside and or vertically, so you gotta
- 29:51Speaker 1: go condensed. You gotta win with yards after catch. You
- 29:54Speaker 1: gotta win in the intermediate and with sucking defenders in
- 29:57Speaker 1: and Kinkaid getting matched up on safeties or linebackers, or
- 30:00Speaker 1: Shakir in the slot, win in or some quick little
- 30:03Speaker 1: rpo bubble or run with a pass tag and you
- 30:05Speaker 1: spin it out to him, whatever the hell. Those three
- 30:08Speaker 1: guys need to be the focal point every week. Designs
- 30:11Speaker 1: for them, calls for them, getting them involved early and
- 30:15Speaker 1: often and into a rhythm. The offense has to flow
- 30:17Speaker 1: through those three guys. They need to start doing that.
- 30:20Speaker 2: The Khalil Sakre point is so fascinating, such a good
- 30:24Speaker 2: point by you, because I think that I agree. I
- 30:26Speaker 2: think Khalils Shakir needs to be a more focal point
- 30:29Speaker 2: of this offense, especially when it comes to just the
- 30:32Speaker 2: easy stuff, when it comes to the after the catch stuff,
- 30:35Speaker 2: when it comes to choice routes in the middle of
- 30:37Speaker 2: the field. Just isolating him on guys at the second
- 30:41Speaker 2: and a second level that just cannot defend him. Again,
- 30:45Speaker 2: I hate to keep bringing it up, but if you're
- 30:47Speaker 2: gonna fully chief sify this offense, this Khalilsakir is your
- 30:53Speaker 2: version of like Rashi Rice when it comes to just
- 30:56Speaker 2: the way they use him in the slot and the
- 30:58Speaker 2: way they kind of isolate him against linebackers safeties, just
- 31:03Speaker 2: absolutely hammer it, absolutely spam it. Get him involved early,
- 31:08Speaker 2: get him involved in the easy game and the quick
- 31:10Speaker 2: game and all those like RPO tags, with the bubble,
- 31:13Speaker 2: with the something you do with Curtis Samuel. Curtis Samel's
- 31:16Speaker 2: does not need to be as focal of a point
- 31:20Speaker 2: in this offense. Like Curtis Samuel is a cool piece
- 31:24Speaker 2: to have in the offense, he cannot be a major
- 31:27Speaker 2: part of the offense that needs to be Shakir and
- 31:30Speaker 2: in kinkaid I again, just think he can be such
- 31:33Speaker 2: a good, good player over mill of the field. Just
- 31:36Speaker 2: isolating him, just have him be your guy against man coverage.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Design routes for him instead of just instead of trying
- 31:44Speaker 2: to manufacture through like through numbers and motions and alignment,
- 31:49Speaker 2: which is a good thing. At some point, somebody's got
- 31:53Speaker 2: to go get you a bucket, and Kinkaid has been
- 31:56Speaker 2: that bucket getter for them this season. Yes, continue to
- 31:59Speaker 2: build that confidence, continue to give him targets because you're
- 32:03Speaker 2: not going to do it with the guys on the
- 32:04Speaker 2: outside right now. That's just not going to happen. That
- 32:07Speaker 2: sort of goes into my stop point we were gonna
- 32:09Speaker 2: get to. But you have to continue to run the
- 32:12Speaker 2: passing game through those two guys.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Absolutely. Yeah, And so it's it's I gotta cheated a
- 32:18Speaker 1: little because they've they've started to do some of this
- 32:20Speaker 1: with Kincaid a bit. They've shown flashes, but I didn't
- 32:23Speaker 1: think it was enough to be a full on, Hey,
- 32:25Speaker 1: this is established. Continue doing that. It just feels like
- 32:28Speaker 1: they get weeks where it's like, you know, we want
- 32:31Speaker 1: to get key On Coleman involved early, and yeah, we
- 32:33Speaker 1: want to get Curt of Samuel involved early. And again
- 32:34Speaker 1: though that's cool, you're your top dudes on the offense,
- 32:39Speaker 1: are shekir not in this order, But they're secure Cook
- 32:42Speaker 1: and Kincaid, And yes, you have to manufacture touches them,
- 32:44Speaker 1: design things around for them, use all the plethora of
- 32:47Speaker 1: motion and shifting and movement that they do. Use it
- 32:51Speaker 1: to create advantageous matchups for them with regularity. Get them on.
- 32:56Speaker 1: And that's even I don't want to get too off track,
- 32:57Speaker 1: but that was even even with ke On Coleman.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I know Keon.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Coleman isn't the best, but like Joe Brady, you couldn't
- 33:05Speaker 1: find a way to get Keon Coleman on Mike Hughes regularly.
- 33:07Speaker 1: You had to keep getting him put on aj Terrell,
- 33:09Speaker 1: like Ajterrell is sick, and you just kept feeding him
- 33:12Speaker 1: to aj Terrell to be like, you know what, let's
- 33:15Speaker 1: let him go out there and then let's like throw
- 33:16Speaker 1: him some back shoulder balls. He's get that's not favorable.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Why are we doing that? And even in general, forget that.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Just spit it to secure, just throw it to spam
- 33:26Speaker 1: it to secure. At this point, dance with who brought you.
- 33:28Speaker 1: And that's kind of where they're at. I don't want
- 33:30Speaker 1: to oversimplify too much, but I feel like that is
- 33:32Speaker 1: a little bit of kind of like the Kiss model,
- 33:34Speaker 1: like keep it simple, stupid, get it through. These three guys,
- 33:37Speaker 1: make them even if you manufactu your gravity to them
- 33:42Speaker 1: from the defense to open things up for other guys.
- 33:45Speaker 1: That is a potential win. All right, do you want
- 33:48Speaker 1: to go, You're gonna go with your stop. Next stop, Okay.
- 33:52Speaker 2: My stop is stop trying to isolate Keon Coleman.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 33:58Speaker 2: And my reason for saying trying to isolate Keon Coleman
- 34:01Speaker 2: is on the back side of those three by ones
- 34:05Speaker 2: and is the isolator receiver against press coverage, He's not.
- 34:09Speaker 2: He hasn't been good this year so against press coverage
- 34:12Speaker 2: in general. According to the NFL Pro Keon Coleman is
- 34:15Speaker 2: second on the team in targets. He has seven targets
- 34:18Speaker 2: against press coverage. He has two catches on those seven targets.
- 34:23Speaker 2: That's just that's not going to cut it, especially for
- 34:26Speaker 2: a guy like you know what, you wish Keon Coleman
- 34:28Speaker 2: were that guy that would make the offense a whole
- 34:31Speaker 2: lot easier if he just converted on a few more
- 34:34Speaker 2: of those press coverage targets on those on tight window targets.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Keon Coleman leads the team in targets with eight. He
- 34:42Speaker 2: has two receptions on tight window targets. That's just that's
- 34:47Speaker 2: not going to cut it. You're turning those into low
- 34:48Speaker 2: percentage throws and the way that you if you want
- 34:51Speaker 2: to get Keon Coleman involved in the game, if you
- 34:54Speaker 2: want to try and get him involved in the game,
- 34:56Speaker 2: you have to manufacture routes for him against off coverage.
- 35:00Speaker 2: That's where he's a lot better when he doesn't have
- 35:02Speaker 2: to try and fight through press technique because he's just
- 35:06Speaker 2: not He hasn't found that comfort yet. Against press. He
- 35:09Speaker 2: is more of an off guy. He's more of a
- 35:12Speaker 2: we're gonna run slants, We're gonna run like glance routes,
- 35:15Speaker 2: and will occasionally run like the stop route against like
- 35:19Speaker 2: Maya coverage against against off coverage, he's not a press
- 35:22Speaker 2: guy at this point. Your press guy's probably gonna end
- 35:25Speaker 2: up being Josh Palmer, which I mean, good luck, but
- 35:30Speaker 2: he's done.
- 35:30Speaker 1: A much better job of it than the way you
- 35:33Speaker 1: like you you knew the answer but didn't want to
- 35:36Speaker 1: see it.
- 35:37Speaker 2: I don't. I don't want it to be Josh Palmer.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Although Josh Palmer is a very useful player, that could
- 35:43Speaker 2: not be the Josh Palmer like diet of receiving targets.
- 35:48Speaker 2: I still do think Kek Coleman has You have to
- 35:51Speaker 2: find a role for him outside of being the blocking receiver,
- 35:55Speaker 2: which he's done a good job at. If you want
- 35:58Speaker 2: to use him as a receiving target, we've learned now
- 36:02Speaker 2: it just can't be as the we're gonna throw him
- 36:04Speaker 2: backside fades or stop routes against press coverage and we're
- 36:08Speaker 2: getting locked up because that's just not his game right now.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Yeah, that's super fair. He's he's made improvements in the
- 36:18Speaker 1: finer points of being a receiver this year. I think
- 36:21Speaker 1: he's shown some improvement in his route running, like his
- 36:24Speaker 1: stemwork has improved. He's had a couple of really good
- 36:25Speaker 1: releases against press, mainly against the Saints. But to your point,
- 36:31Speaker 1: it's just not He's not there from a consistency standpoint
- 36:36Speaker 1: with the finer points. And what I really like about
- 36:38Speaker 1: your point it ties into something I think I mentioned
- 36:41Speaker 1: this last week. I don't know, the last week and
- 36:42Speaker 1: a half has been a blur. My biggest thing with
- 36:45Speaker 1: Keon Coleman isn't necessarily even with Keon Coleman, he was
- 36:49Speaker 1: a project coming out of Forlida State. Everybody and their
- 36:52Speaker 1: mother knew this. The example I always gave I Now
- 36:54Speaker 1: because I said it so much, it's burning my brain.
- 36:56Speaker 1: He was wide receiver nine for me coming out, but
- 36:59Speaker 1: I thought he had the widest range of outcomes like he.
- 37:01Speaker 1: If you would have told me he would have been
- 37:02Speaker 1: a wide receiver two in four years, I would believe it.
- 37:05Speaker 1: If you told me he was out of the league
- 37:07Speaker 1: in four years, I believe it if you told me
- 37:10Speaker 1: that he was going to be that receiver into his
- 37:11Speaker 1: early thirties, cashing in on one or two year deals
- 37:14Speaker 1: because all these different teams thought they could be the
- 37:16Speaker 1: ones to finally tap into the traits. I believe it.
- 37:19Speaker 1: He had such a wide range of potential outcomes, and
- 37:22Speaker 1: the Bills took him and needed him from his rookie
- 37:27Speaker 1: year through now Gear two. They needed him to be
- 37:30Speaker 1: a top of the depth chart guy, and that's not
- 37:33Speaker 1: what a project wide receiver should be. Who was playing
- 37:37Speaker 1: basketball a bunch at Michigan State two years before you
- 37:40Speaker 1: took him. Like it's just I don't want to say
- 37:44Speaker 1: you set up a guy for failure because they are
- 37:47Speaker 1: a run first team, and his body type and his
- 37:50Speaker 1: skill set fits the run game and some things you
- 37:52Speaker 1: can do with that, But you can't take a project
- 37:55Speaker 1: wide receiver and drop him in and make him have
- 37:57Speaker 1: to be a top two wide receiver on your team
- 38:00Speaker 1: from the depth chart perspective, especially if your number one
- 38:04Speaker 1: on the depth chart isn't a true one. This is
- 38:07Speaker 1: and I'm not saying this to stoke any fires. I'm
- 38:10Speaker 1: just saying it because it was the last true wide
- 38:11Speaker 1: receiver one of the Bills had. It's different if your
- 38:13Speaker 1: wide receiver one is Stefon Diggs and your wide receiver
- 38:16Speaker 1: two is Keyon Coleman, and it's like, oh, okay, well we've
- 38:19Speaker 1: got our one and Keon can be the two their
- 38:21Speaker 1: styles contrast. And then oh man, though the three is Shakir.
- 38:24Speaker 1: That's pretty cool if you have a true one, or
- 38:27Speaker 1: even your one is like a high level two in
- 38:30Speaker 1: some aspect or capacity, or or you're dropping him into
- 38:35Speaker 1: the Packers wide receiver room where they have a whole
- 38:37Speaker 1: bunch of like twos and threes at worst everywhere, it's like, oh, okay, cool,
- 38:41Speaker 1: Like that's kind of fun. They dropped him in asked
- 38:45Speaker 1: him to be like, hey man, we need you to
- 38:48Speaker 1: learn how to consistently play X on the fly in
- 38:51Speaker 1: the NFL. While you're still learning how to play the game,
- 38:55Speaker 1: and you're learning timing and tempo and pacing and how
- 38:59Speaker 1: to have your hands and sync with your feet and everything.
- 39:02Speaker 1: And I, Oh, it's just such a frustrating thing for
- 39:08Speaker 1: him and for this offense because they keep like the
- 39:12Speaker 1: reason you're saying stop, they keep like, I feel like
- 39:15Speaker 1: I'm watching mean girls, and I'm like, stop trying to
- 39:17Speaker 1: make fetch happen. Like it's not gonna happen. It might
- 39:19Speaker 1: happen in year three, or it might happen in year four.
- 39:23Speaker 1: It's not gonna happen in year two. You got he
- 39:26Speaker 1: needs time on task. He's a project. You can't expect
- 39:29Speaker 1: this project to be ready right now to contribute this way.
- 39:32Speaker 1: And again it goes back to my part with point
- 39:34Speaker 1: with the Falcons game, like you just kept feeding him
- 39:37Speaker 1: to aj Terrell, like what are you doing to this
- 39:39Speaker 1: dude man? And why are you doing this to your offense?
- 39:41Speaker 1: And then even with him, him and Alan, a lot
- 39:45Speaker 1: of their throws, Allen doesn't even take advantage of his
- 39:49Speaker 1: size difference. It's like, let me throw a laser for
- 39:52Speaker 1: a back shoulder throat. Now, screw that, throw it up
- 39:54Speaker 1: and let him go up and scrape that rebound off
- 39:57Speaker 1: the glass and go make a play. Let him use
- 39:59Speaker 1: that big body elevate, maybe he gets chugged on the collar,
- 40:01Speaker 1: maybe somebody tries to hold the arm down. Like Alan
- 40:05Speaker 1: hasn't played into his skill set rate, which was part
- 40:08Speaker 1: of one of my biggest concerns when they drafted him,
- 40:10Speaker 1: because Alan has done his best work with true declarative
- 40:14Speaker 1: separators like Stefan Diggs and Cole Beasley and guys like
- 40:18Speaker 1: that and Dalton Kincaid, guys who find space when early
- 40:21Speaker 1: and often he hasn't won with these non separators who
- 40:24Speaker 1: are big body dudes. Let me throw a jump ball up,
- 40:26Speaker 1: see what happens. And I feel like he's adjusting. I
- 40:31Speaker 1: feel like Keon is still learning. And then how Brady
- 40:34Speaker 1: is utilizing him. And I also get it because you
- 40:38Speaker 1: need somebody to be that true ex presence, even if
- 40:40Speaker 1: it's what is Matt Harmon say, like the sacrificial X, Like,
- 40:43Speaker 1: even if you need somebody to be that, like, you
- 40:45Speaker 1: still need somebody to do that. And I feel like
- 40:48Speaker 1: they're using him as the sacrificial X or forcing him
- 40:51Speaker 1: into that role. But then they're also forcing him the
- 40:54Speaker 1: targets and it's just like, no, this is bad on bad.
- 40:57Speaker 1: It's the opposite of good on good, and you're setting
- 40:59Speaker 1: him up for failure, you're setting yourself up for failure.
- 41:03Speaker 1: And yeah, that's that's a really good stop.
- 41:08Speaker 2: It sucks because, as someone who watched a lot of
- 41:11Speaker 2: Florissa football and watched a lot of key On Coleman,
- 41:13Speaker 2: there is potential for this guy to be good in
- 41:16Speaker 2: the NFL A quality of receiver. I think, like you said,
- 41:19Speaker 2: the athleticism stands out when you ask him to go
- 41:21Speaker 2: get the ball above the rim, But he is still
- 41:23Speaker 2: figuring out how to play receiver. He's still figuring out
- 41:27Speaker 2: the finer points. So if you want to make him
- 41:29Speaker 2: a if you want to make him a guy like
- 41:32Speaker 2: you want to involve him in the offense, you have
- 41:34Speaker 2: to get him targets where he's either running away from
- 41:38Speaker 2: somebody or design him just exclusively red zone stuff. You
- 41:42Speaker 2: should give him slants, uh slants over routes and the
- 41:46Speaker 2: occasional go route or the occasional fade. That's it. But
- 41:50Speaker 2: if you're doing if you're gonna, if you gotta say that,
- 41:52Speaker 2: then like it just he has to be better. But
- 41:56Speaker 2: I also think the design of the offense can help
- 41:59Speaker 2: him at what he does best.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Right now, that's a great way to say it. I
- 42:03Speaker 1: like that. I like that a lot. My stop is
- 42:08Speaker 1: very simple. Stop all the predictability. I think they've gotten
- 42:14Speaker 1: very predictable on offense. And it used to be I'm
- 42:17Speaker 1: gonna speak out of both sides of my mouth for
- 42:18Speaker 1: a little bit, because it used to be fun. It
- 42:20Speaker 1: used to be like, man, they're gonna go three by
- 42:23Speaker 1: one and from the bunch, they're gonna send the one
- 42:26Speaker 1: in jet motion and they're gonna run weak side mid
- 42:29Speaker 1: zone and the defense knows that they can't do anything
- 42:32Speaker 1: about it, or they're gonna show that same presentation and
- 42:33Speaker 1: run duo and you can't do anything about it. Defenses
- 42:36Speaker 1: are doing something about it now. They know what's coming,
- 42:39Speaker 1: and so they are at this point, they're running the
- 42:41Speaker 1: same concepts from the same formations and the same alignments
- 42:45Speaker 1: with the same motions, and every once in a while
- 42:48Speaker 1: they'll do something different from those presentations. But it's not
- 42:51Speaker 1: enough to create doubt because defenses are still just playing
- 42:54Speaker 1: the odds. They're running Mesh like seventy five times a game.
- 42:59Speaker 1: They run Mesh so oh so much.
- 43:01Speaker 2: It's awful.
- 43:02Speaker 1: It's not good.
- 43:04Speaker 2: It's just they run Mesh and Mesh return. That is
- 43:08Speaker 2: the passing game.
- 43:08Speaker 1: That's it. And then like specifically they run mesh rail
- 43:13Speaker 1: and that's what. And so mesh rail, the running back
- 43:16Speaker 1: is usually the one off of that, so like let's
- 43:18Speaker 1: get eyes to him right away. It's not open anymore.
- 43:22Speaker 1: And that was a huge way for them to get
- 43:24Speaker 1: the running backs involved, their running back, their EPA per attempt,
- 43:27Speaker 1: and their EPA and effectiveness in running back targets. It's
- 43:30Speaker 1: been Joe Brady's calling cards at this time at LSU
- 43:32Speaker 1: when he convinced everyone that Clyde Edwards Hilaire was going
- 43:35Speaker 1: to be an awesome running back in the NFL, and
- 43:37Speaker 1: then he did great work with the running backs in Carolina,
- 43:40Speaker 1: did great work with the running backs in Buffalo these
- 43:42Speaker 1: past two years. But now everybody's kind of caught on
- 43:46Speaker 1: to be like, okay, here comes the rail. Just get
- 43:48Speaker 1: over the top on it. They're not gonna throw it.
- 43:49Speaker 1: And that's all they do. They get over the top,
- 43:51Speaker 1: so the rail is dead, the rest of the mesh
- 43:53Speaker 1: is dead. Then you combine that with Alan getting some
- 43:55Speaker 1: pressure and they've had some I want to be fair,
- 44:00Speaker 1: they have had some mesh were some mesh rail where
- 44:03Speaker 1: the rail is covered the underneath drag that's the two
- 44:06Speaker 1: is covered. The over the ball is covered, which is
- 44:09Speaker 1: the three, but the four that other drag that's open.
- 44:13Speaker 1: But Allen doesn't have time to get there because he
- 44:15Speaker 1: gets pressured or he's been pressured to lead enough to
- 44:17Speaker 1: that and he gets skittih and he decides to bail
- 44:19Speaker 1: from the pocket when he didn't have to. So they're
- 44:20Speaker 1: running mesh a ton and then even under center and
- 44:25Speaker 1: shotgun stuff. I think this was talked about. This is
- 44:28Speaker 1: one of the few times that Chris Collinsworth it said
- 44:30Speaker 1: something good on national television. He talked about it during
- 44:33Speaker 1: the Pats game. This is very true. Uh So, as
- 44:35Speaker 1: of right now, the Bills have a twenty one point
- 44:37Speaker 1: three percent under center pass rate, twenty ninth in the league.
- 44:41Speaker 1: So when they're under center, it's highly likely that it's
- 44:44Speaker 1: going to be a run. There's a big difference between
- 44:47Speaker 1: it being like, well, they're probably gonna run versus like, no,
- 44:50Speaker 1: they're gonna run, like eight Yeah, those are huge odds.
- 44:53Speaker 1: And then you pair that with a set for the
- 44:55Speaker 1: inverse or the shotgun. You pair that with a seventy
- 44:58Speaker 1: eight point five percent shotgun pass rate, so everybody can
- 45:01Speaker 1: such a leave bet all right, they're in shotgun, it's
- 45:03Speaker 1: a pass, they're under center. Here comes the run. And
- 45:05Speaker 1: then you pair that with the alignments and formations that
- 45:09Speaker 1: they operate out of, and it's even more like okay,
- 45:12Speaker 1: so they got about an eighty percent under center pass rate.
- 45:15Speaker 1: When they're in this three by one with the tight bunch,
- 45:18Speaker 1: it's mid zone or it's dual. If they send that
- 45:20Speaker 1: jet motion, it's probably going to be weak side mid zone.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Roughly seventy five percent of the time. All of these
- 45:25Speaker 1: things stack and stack and stack. So you can get
- 45:29Speaker 1: away with yeah, you're probably they're probably going to do this,
- 45:32Speaker 1: but they might not. You can't get away with, oh no,
- 45:34Speaker 1: they're doing a yep, here comes b And then again,
- 45:37Speaker 1: when you tie that in with all the formational tells,
- 45:40Speaker 1: it compounds into tendencies and tells and defenses can play
- 45:45Speaker 1: the odds. Or if you're the New England Patriots in Atlanta,
- 45:48Speaker 1: Falcons scout you well enough to know literally what's going
- 45:52Speaker 1: to come. And then the last little bit of predictability,
- 45:56Speaker 1: they run the ball. I'm all for running the ball.
- 45:58Speaker 1: You are for running the ball. We love it's great,
- 46:01Speaker 1: but they're running so much on predictable downs and distances
- 46:04Speaker 1: to the point where I'm like, cool, it's second and two,
- 46:07Speaker 1: let's take a shot. And they're like, no, we're just
- 46:09Speaker 1: gonna run it for three. And it's like okay, but
- 46:12Speaker 1: you're gonna take a shot eventually, right, Nope, we're just
- 46:15Speaker 1: gonna keep Oh it's second and one, man, are you
- 46:17Speaker 1: gonna take the shot? And they're just gonna keep doing that. Yeah,
- 46:20Speaker 1: they've just gotten two. And it used to be a bonus.
- 46:22Speaker 1: It was like they could run the same thing over
- 46:24Speaker 1: and over again. If it's not broken, don't fix it.
- 46:26Speaker 1: But it's starting to get broken or starting to break
- 46:29Speaker 1: a little bit. You gotta start to fix it. You
- 46:31Speaker 1: gotta throw more change ups. It's I get it. The
- 46:34Speaker 1: fat You throw a ninety eight mile an hour fastball
- 46:36Speaker 1: and it's got movement, it's hard to hit. You gotta
- 46:38Speaker 1: work in the change up a little bit more and
- 46:40Speaker 1: a slider. You gotta start to throw more than the
- 46:41Speaker 1: one pitch.
- 46:43Speaker 2: You know what the Bills need, Get in loser. We're
- 46:47Speaker 2: going back to two thousand and seven under center drop back.
- 46:50Speaker 1: That's a little Sam Darno in the Seattle Seahawks. Baby, Yeah, that's.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Been a thing this year all the everybody's using under
- 46:57Speaker 2: centered drop back because it breaks predictability of being under center.
- 47:02Speaker 2: The Seahawks are so good offensively without having a great
- 47:05Speaker 2: run game because they make everything look the same. They
- 47:09Speaker 2: make all their stuff look similar. They can run at
- 47:12Speaker 2: a they can run out of twelve, they can run
- 47:13Speaker 2: out of twenty one, and everything looks so similar because
- 47:17Speaker 2: you can still get to drop back passing games and
- 47:19Speaker 2: attack downfield.
- 47:20Speaker 1: They have and they really married the play action, like
- 47:25Speaker 1: they'll run they're running play action off of like GF
- 47:28Speaker 1: counter and you're thinking, like, here comes counter. Oh it's
- 47:31Speaker 1: a play action shot. Like they're they're running their their
- 47:34Speaker 1: play action concepts or built off of the exact look
- 47:37Speaker 1: and presentation of exactly what they're running. So it's not
- 47:40Speaker 1: just like oh yeah, like they're running play action. No,
- 47:43Speaker 1: they make it look the exact same. It's just it's
- 47:45Speaker 1: so their offense is an entire ecosystem under Kubiak is
- 47:49Speaker 1: so beautiful. Sorry, I got excited. I watched their tape.
- 47:52Speaker 1: I watched their tape every week. I love their offense.
- 47:55Speaker 2: I love their offense. It is such a throwback or
- 47:58Speaker 2: it's like this is this is real football. Right here,
- 48:00Speaker 2: And I think Tom McVay said it a few years ago.
- 48:03Speaker 2: The Rams don't run a lot of plays. They have
- 48:06Speaker 2: a lot of formations that make the same plays look
- 48:10Speaker 2: They make everything look similar, and that's how you make
- 48:13Speaker 2: that's how you get unpredictability. It's not running three thousand
- 48:17Speaker 2: different plays. It's running the same play out of a
- 48:20Speaker 2: different formation, or using a different motion to tag on
- 48:22Speaker 2: this time, or using a different alignment to get it
- 48:25Speaker 2: to mask the predictability. So for the Bills, I would
- 48:28Speaker 2: love to see them, like I said, use under center
- 48:30Speaker 2: play action, Use just regular under center five step drop back.
- 48:35Speaker 2: I know that's probably gonna be a little weird for like,
- 48:38Speaker 2: for like a lot of Bills fans to see, because
- 48:40Speaker 2: we are we are in twenty twenty five, and I'm saying, like, yeah,
- 48:43Speaker 2: just give me the straight under center drop back. But
- 48:45Speaker 2: if you look at a lot of teams around the league,
- 48:47Speaker 2: you look at the forty nine ers, you look at
- 48:49Speaker 2: them like the Seahawks. Even Kansas City pulled out a
- 48:52Speaker 2: straight drop back against the Raiders last on Sunday out
- 48:56Speaker 2: of like thirteen personnel, and I felt like I was
- 48:58Speaker 2: watching football in like a time app So where am
- 49:00Speaker 2: I right? Like what just happened? Like Dak Prescott's doing
- 49:04Speaker 2: under center drop back. It's like all the cool kids
- 49:07Speaker 2: are doing the under center, like under center five step dropbacks. Like, well,
- 49:12Speaker 2: let's get the Bills into the modern throwback age. But
- 49:15Speaker 2: I do think that could really help with their their
- 49:17Speaker 2: predictability issues. Like you said, teams are just keying in
- 49:21Speaker 2: on their on their run game stuff because you know,
- 49:23Speaker 2: it's a run under center. So if you're if you
- 49:26Speaker 2: always play knowing what the other opponent has in their hand,
- 49:30Speaker 2: you're probably gonna win most of the time. Yeah.
- 49:32Speaker 1: Absolutely, And then he like tying it into the shotgun
- 49:35Speaker 1: piece too, like they were one of the best like
- 49:37Speaker 1: power spread running teams for years. If you want to
- 49:41Speaker 1: lean into okay, we have an eighty seventy eight point
- 49:44Speaker 1: five shotgun pass rate, Stay in shotgun, start to run tackle,
- 49:48Speaker 1: long trap, start to run dart again, Like, get back
- 49:50Speaker 1: into that spread.
- 49:51Speaker 2: That's oh I.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Hate diving back into pass frustrations. That's what they needed
- 49:55Speaker 1: to do against the Patriots. Get their heavy bodies on
- 49:58Speaker 1: the field, go out there and stay in twelve, but
- 50:01Speaker 1: run it from a two by two gun look and
- 50:03Speaker 1: spread them out and then run dart, make them put
- 50:05Speaker 1: those big, heavy bodies on the field instead. They were like, nah,
- 50:08Speaker 1: we're gonna try and mash with them. They mashed better
- 50:10Speaker 1: than you. Stop trying to do that from a tight it.
- 50:14Speaker 1: Oh yeah, a lot of predictability and in in frustrating ways.
- 50:18Speaker 1: I'm glad we see that all right now. The positive
- 50:20Speaker 1: for the offensive side the continue of this exercise. What
- 50:24Speaker 1: do you think the Buffalo offense needs to continue to do.
- 50:27Speaker 2: Continue to lean on your strength, which is the offensive line.
- 50:31Speaker 2: Continue to make that your calling card outside of Josh Allen.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Continue just to hammer teams. Like I know, we talked
- 50:39Speaker 2: about the predictability, how they need to become more unpredictable,
- 50:42Speaker 2: which is great, but that their bucket. They're like, we
- 50:46Speaker 2: gotta go get it. You have the best, one of
- 50:48Speaker 2: the best offensive lines in football. It opens up so
- 50:51Speaker 2: many different worlds for you knowing you have an offensive
- 50:54Speaker 2: line that is one solid and reliable in pass protection,
- 50:59Speaker 2: but two incredibly athletic. They can do a lot of
- 51:03Speaker 2: different stuff. We talked about a lot on the podcast,
- 51:05Speaker 2: which is you can get away with a lot of
- 51:08Speaker 2: stuff if you have a great RAS score. Yeah, Like,
- 51:13Speaker 2: if you can move you get away with a lot
- 51:16Speaker 2: of stuff. You can be a little less technical if
- 51:18Speaker 2: you're one of the best athletes on the planet. And
- 51:21Speaker 2: Spencer Brown Dion Dawkins have always been incredibly athletic. They
- 51:25Speaker 2: have guys who can move people up front, but they
- 51:28Speaker 2: all communicate really well. That's the thing that stands out
- 51:31Speaker 2: about the Bills offensive line is they you rarely ever
- 51:34Speaker 2: catch them out of sorts when it comes to their
- 51:37Speaker 2: past protection. And that's what really stunned me about the
- 51:39Speaker 2: Falcons game is they kind of just they kind of
- 51:41Speaker 2: caught them in different different blitzes. They really kind of
- 51:45Speaker 2: they fooled them. They fooled the Bills in pass pro.
- 51:48Speaker 2: So continue to lean on that offensive line as your
- 51:51Speaker 2: strength and build everything outside of that nucleus the offensive
- 51:55Speaker 2: line and Josh Allen and build everything else around that.
- 51:59Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah, they have one of the best
- 52:01Speaker 1: offensive line coaches in football and Aaron Kromer and what
- 52:04Speaker 1: he's done to build this unit with the run game
- 52:07Speaker 1: diversity they have and the pass protection that they have,
- 52:10Speaker 1: especially with how much oh I had it at one point.
- 52:13Speaker 2: I don't know where it.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Is in my notes, Like their majority of their pass
- 52:17Speaker 1: pro stuff is all five man protection stuff. They're not
- 52:19Speaker 1: a big six man protection team, seven man protection team.
- 52:22Speaker 1: It's all on the offensive line. So they are to
- 52:24Speaker 1: your point, like it's either Allan and Allen has gotten
- 52:27Speaker 1: I know he's struggled a bit recently, but he's good
- 52:31Speaker 1: pre snap communication identification. Connor McGovern is really good at that.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Like you said, like they're a smart unit. They play well,
- 52:39Speaker 1: they are cohesive, They've got a lot of reps together,
- 52:41Speaker 1: fingers crossed, no chinks. And again, a lot of it
- 52:44Speaker 1: is on them because it's when it comes time for
- 52:46Speaker 1: pass pro, it's it's five man protection stuff, and that's
- 52:48Speaker 1: it's on them. So if the defense is running four, cool,
- 52:51Speaker 1: we got five on four. The defense is running six.
- 52:53Speaker 1: Uh oh, it's it's six on five. And then Allen
- 52:56Speaker 1: is usually like that's fine, let the six guy through.
- 52:58Speaker 1: I'll make a miss or I know I'm hot and
- 52:59Speaker 1: I'll figure something out. Yeah. That offensive line is a
- 53:02Speaker 1: tremendous engine for this team. Ties in a little bit
- 53:05Speaker 1: to my continue, which is in sexy or too long,
- 53:08Speaker 1: I literally said lean on the offensive line in the
- 53:10Speaker 1: run game to mash teams. But then I put a
- 53:13Speaker 1: little asterisk and I said, but use it to set
- 53:16Speaker 1: the table for explosives in the pass. That's my big thing,
- 53:19Speaker 1: tying a little bit into your start of the more
- 53:21Speaker 1: play action. I just think the success for and again
- 53:25Speaker 1: tying it a little bit what we've already talked about.
- 53:27Speaker 1: They're not built to win on the outside with their
- 53:29Speaker 1: wide receivers this offense. I don't care that Josh Allen
- 53:32Speaker 1: is the MVP. They are not built to throw it
- 53:35Speaker 1: thirty to forty times a game. That's not who they are.
- 53:38Speaker 2: And that's okay. It's okay to not have to throw
- 53:42Speaker 2: the ball forty times a game. I feel like I'm
- 53:44Speaker 2: like taking crazy bills every time, like somebody's like, oh,
- 53:47Speaker 2: we got to throw the ball. No, Like, if you
- 53:49Speaker 2: have to throw the ball a lot, unless you are
- 53:52Speaker 2: Patrick Mahomes, you're probably not winning those games. And even then,
- 53:56Speaker 2: the biggest issue with Chiefs until they got Receist rise
- 53:59Speaker 2: back was they couldn't run the football. Yes, like they
- 54:02Speaker 2: couldn't generate anything outside of Patrick Mahomes being Patrick Mahomes.
- 54:05Speaker 2: So yes, fine, if you don't throw the ball forty
- 54:09Speaker 2: times a game, because if you're throwing the ball twenty
- 54:11Speaker 2: times a game, you're probably winning that game.
- 54:13Speaker 1: Yeah, one thousand percent. And you look at a lot
- 54:16Speaker 1: of the best offenses in the league, however you want
- 54:18Speaker 1: to slice it, they schematically or like metrics, rowstats. They
- 54:23Speaker 1: usually have really good run games, or they're creative in
- 54:26Speaker 1: the run game, or they're effective in it, or it
- 54:28Speaker 1: doesn't have to be a high volume. It might be
- 54:29Speaker 1: high volume man effective. But you look at the past
- 54:31Speaker 1: several years of what the Lions have been, what the
- 54:33Speaker 1: Packers have been, even I know, and I know you'll
- 54:36Speaker 1: appreciate this because you post a lot of their tape
- 54:38Speaker 1: like I do. As much as Baker Mayfield has been
- 54:40Speaker 1: the story for the Bucks the past couple of years.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Their run game was sick last year under Leam Cohen like,
- 54:45Speaker 1: and it was sick this year too, before their entire
- 54:47Speaker 1: offensive line got hurt and went out the door. Although
- 54:49Speaker 1: I know works is back, like the way that they
- 54:52Speaker 1: would get to their counterlooks and all the cool gap
- 54:54Speaker 1: scheme stuff they were doing last year like man like
- 54:57Speaker 1: run game is very much the meta that's part of
- 54:59Speaker 1: the pendulum swing offenses took back after all these years. Okay,
- 55:02Speaker 1: cool two high structures. Nickel defense is smaller interior defensive
- 55:06Speaker 1: linemen you're all built to stop the pass. Cool, We're
- 55:09Speaker 1: just gonna mash the hell out of you. I really
- 55:11Speaker 1: do think the Bills path the success is paved through
- 55:17Speaker 1: the offensive line and twelve thirteen, twenty one, twenty two,
- 55:23Speaker 1: and even twenty three personnel lean into the heavies grind mash. Honestly,
- 55:28Speaker 1: that was I think the Falcons are a cool defense.
- 55:31Speaker 1: Jesse Bates is one of my favorite players, so I
- 55:33Speaker 1: watch a lot of Falcons tav even when their defense
- 55:35Speaker 1: is bad. That've been bad the past couple of years,
- 55:37Speaker 1: but their defense is kind of sweet this year. The
- 55:39Speaker 1: big reason why they got all these cool body types
- 55:42Speaker 1: up front. They're all fast and athletic, and they all
- 55:44Speaker 1: have juice and they can move and penetrate. You know what,
- 55:47Speaker 1: they're not all necessarily great at doing stop in the
- 55:50Speaker 1: run if you try to run through their face. I
- 55:52Speaker 1: thought the Bills, especially when Palmer went down, I was like, Okay,
- 55:55Speaker 1: they're just gonna go heavy and road grade them. And
- 55:58Speaker 1: they didn't. They started a little bit, and that second
- 56:01Speaker 1: the second half drive where they ran duo when it
- 56:02Speaker 1: felt like seven times in a row and just mashed
- 56:05Speaker 1: the hell out of them. Yeah, because went in doubt,
- 56:07Speaker 1: run duo, like that's all you need to do, and
- 56:10Speaker 1: that is that's the table seter for this entire offense,
- 56:13Speaker 1: road grade mash, grind, lean on the line, lean on
- 56:16Speaker 1: the run game. But then I want them to use
- 56:18Speaker 1: it to build into those explosives. They got to maintain
- 56:22Speaker 1: the explosives. There has to be some sort of create
- 56:26Speaker 1: doubt and space between the second and third level. Otherwise
- 56:29Speaker 1: teams eventually will come down just be like we're just
- 56:31Speaker 1: going to stack eight nine in the box, smother the run.
- 56:34Speaker 1: But if you compare it with those body types and again,
- 56:37Speaker 1: just work the rhythm, limit a little bit of the predictability.
- 56:39Speaker 1: But yeah, it starts just grind the defenses into dust
- 56:42Speaker 1: and like Dominic Toretto, live life a quarter mile at
- 56:45Speaker 1: a time and then work, work and play action.
- 56:48Speaker 2: And like I think everybody wants like the Detroit Lions offense,
- 56:52Speaker 2: because the Lions offense is incredible. Yes, but excuse my language.
- 56:57Speaker 2: When shit hits the fan, they run by pay Sewell,
- 57:01Speaker 2: when they need a play, they run the ball like
- 57:04Speaker 2: that is their identity. That's something that I think the
- 57:07Speaker 2: Bills have manufactured their identity on running the football being
- 57:11Speaker 2: the I hate the characterizer from like a large scales
- 57:14Speaker 2: being the team up north that you don't want to
- 57:16Speaker 2: play when it gets told because they're gonna hit you
- 57:18Speaker 2: in the mouth like you be that team. And of
- 57:21Speaker 2: course we get to like the predictability stuff. But like
- 57:24Speaker 2: we said with some of the tweaks you can add
- 57:26Speaker 2: with play action, with the under center drop back stuff.
- 57:29Speaker 2: You should base your your jab if we're talking about
- 57:33Speaker 2: like a punch like a boxing match. Your JAB should
- 57:36Speaker 2: be the run game and the offensive line. It shouldn't
- 57:38Speaker 2: be Josh Allen have to be Superman all the time.
- 57:42Speaker 2: It's cool that he can be, but he don't want
- 57:45Speaker 2: to ask him to have to do that all the time,
- 57:46Speaker 2: especially with the receiver corps being the way that it
- 57:49Speaker 2: is right now. The JAB should be the offensive line
- 57:52Speaker 2: and the run game. And then you hit him with
- 57:54Speaker 2: the Josh Allen Haymaker. That's that's what the Chiefs are doing.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Like that Patrick Mahomes just RPO outside that's six yards,
- 58:03Speaker 2: jet sweep, Hollywood Brown five yards, those little glance routes,
- 58:08Speaker 2: those little hitches off RPO six yards, and then Patrick
- 58:12Speaker 2: Mahomes hits you for forty yards off layoffs like they
- 58:16Speaker 2: don't ask him to be Superman until it's time to
- 58:19Speaker 2: be super Yeah.
- 58:22Speaker 1: And it's I even think too, Like the run game
- 58:25Speaker 1: can be that jab and it can also be like
- 58:27Speaker 1: a good shot to the gut. It could be a
- 58:30Speaker 1: good uppercut like and then you can really work in
- 58:32Speaker 1: that pass again for the haymaker. But that run, yeah,
- 58:36Speaker 1: that is your table center. They can gash teams, they
- 58:39Speaker 1: can get explosives in the run like, they can grind
- 58:41Speaker 1: you out for like six to eight yards a time,
- 58:44Speaker 1: but then cook can pop a ten yarder into a
- 58:46Speaker 1: twenty yarder or a twenty yard er into a house call.
- 58:48Speaker 2: Like.
- 58:48Speaker 1: Their run game is so good. The offensive line is
- 58:51Speaker 1: so good. I think they've just gotten away from it
- 58:53Speaker 1: a little bit. And injuries have played a role, and
- 58:55Speaker 1: so on and so forth. But very fair overall on
- 58:58Speaker 1: the offensive side the ball. All right, JP, let's pivot.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Let's go to the defensive side. Start, stop, continue again.
- 59:08Speaker 1: You are the guests. Feel free to start with your start,
- 59:12Speaker 1: start with your stop, start with your continue, whatever it
- 59:15Speaker 1: is you want to do. Let's do the defensive side
- 59:18Speaker 1: of the ball.
- 59:18Speaker 2: Defensive side of the ball. I think you know where
- 59:20Speaker 2: I'm going with this. Stop the run that's that's the
- 59:26Speaker 2: biggest thing. Like you have to stop the run. Specifically,
- 59:30Speaker 2: if I could add like an astis or parentheses next
- 59:32Speaker 2: to stop the run, tackle, like it's football is so simple.
- 59:37Speaker 2: When you can stop the run and you make tackles,
- 59:40Speaker 2: it's like you we can make it as complicated. We
- 59:43Speaker 2: can spin guys into the box, we can do all
- 59:45Speaker 2: these cool sim pressures, we can draw it up on
- 59:48Speaker 2: the board as cool as we want to. But if
- 59:50Speaker 2: you can't tackle, none of that works, Like you can't
- 59:55Speaker 2: tackle in space, none of that is going to be
- 59:57Speaker 2: a thing for you. So while looking it up to
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: really emphasize like stopping the run, the Bills are dead
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: last and yards after contact.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Oh, it's so bad, and it's it's not even because
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: I got a number on this two Per next Gen Stats,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: they are last in the league in yards after contact
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: per rush at four point three eight. But here's the
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: big kicker four point three eight yards after contact per
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: rush the Chargers. I almost say Clippers because I wrote
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: LAC and I'm focused on basketball. To season start, the
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: Chargers are second at three point six. Okay, the distance
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: between the Bills at one and the Chargers at two
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: is the same as the distance of the Chargers at
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: two and the Rams at twenty fourth. That's how bad
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: the Bills are in yards after contact per attempt against
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: the run. That is crazy. They're almost a full yard
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: more than the team and second, which is like essentially
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: double what the team at twenty fourth is.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: And it's really bad because because their yards before contact
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: isn't bad. They're thirteenth in yards before contact.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: The actually I thought, because.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: I thought it would be so much worse.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: So they just keep getting moved correct, but it starts
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: with again, I hate to keep going back to them
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: because they are the easy guys to pick on on
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: this defense.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: But your safeties have to tackle. You can't play in
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: light boxes, you can't play with small bodies on the field,
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: and your safety is not not tackle. Taylor Rapp wants to,
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: he just can't. And every time Cole Bishop is forced
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: into a scenario we have to make a tackle one
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: on one, he ends up on somebody else's highlight reel. Yeah,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: like it's it's it's fundamental stuff, and it's it stinks
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: because you can see like, yeah, we want to stop
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: the run from light boxes, which yet it makes sense
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: because you want to vote more bias in the pass,
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: which stopping to run with light bodies and light boxes
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: helps you spin and more to defend the past, but
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: they aren't executing that. They cannot tackle the second level.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: Of course, having Matt Mlano back will probably change some
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: of these, but Terrell Bernard's played, you know, Taron Johnson.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: Not having Taron Johnson is also a big issue because
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: he's also your best tackler.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: Bro, So it's ironic they've used more base this year
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: to counteract like teams running at him and trying to
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: go heavier. But dude, I literally tweeted at earlier today
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: like which is understandable, right, you want to go big
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: on big, but taking Taron Johnson off the field, you
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: took off your best like box run defender. Even though
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: he's one hundred and ninety pounds, he's their best second
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: level defender at fitting the run and making the tackle.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: So you're you're hurting yourself even though you're going bigger
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: to try and not hurt yourself.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: And the issue, especially if you miss tackles, is because
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: of how fast this Bill's defense flows at the second level.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: If you miss a tackle, it's gonna be an explosive.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: That's the issue for the Bills. It's not just the
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: one yard games turning into five, it's the five yard
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: games turning in the fifteen and the eight yard games
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: turning into twenty because you missed tackles. You have to
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: stop the run. That has to be the priority. I
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: get like the passing game hasn't been the pass defense
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: hasn't been that great. You're missing a lot of guys
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: in the secondary, which so effect pass coverage. But you
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: know what else affects pass coverage having to spend eight
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: to nine guys in the box because you can't tackle,
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: so you have to stop the run with nine people
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: in the box, and then you take advantage of your
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: Davius White because he's in single coverage, so you're the
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: Bills are having to play with one hand tie behind
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: their back because they can't stop the run out of
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: light boxes. When we think about like the great Bills
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: defenses we've seen during this run, they were awesome stopping
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: to run out of light boxes because they were so
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: sure as tacklers. And that could be because the guys
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: who were great then are becoming a little older, could
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: be getting a little more injured. The body. The body
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: blows are starting to pick up a little bit. But
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: you need you need to tackle. And I hate to
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: sound like such like a fundamentalist, such a like an
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: old school like football guy, but you really it really
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: does come down to tackling. And that's sort of again,
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: excuse my leg. That's a give a shit like you
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: have to. You have to give a bleep as a tackler.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: That's super fair. I my start for the Bills defense.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: I literally put stop that fing run like that was
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: my start. And it's it's everything you said. I'm not
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: gonna drill down too much, but it's and it's also
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: schematic like it's it's multiple guys in the same gap
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: like so cool, like we talked about earlier. Oh you
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: got eight guys in the box. Cool, two of them
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: are in the same gap, or you got three. They've
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: had times where like there's three guys in the A gap.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Why what are why is that happening? So you've got
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: guys insane in the same gaps. You got guys getting
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: washed or blown off the ball, even though their yards
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: before contact are not too bad, which is awesome. But yeah,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: you'll have guys in the same gap guys will get
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: blown off the ball, and then your linebackers are getting
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: eaten because they're small and they're having to take on
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: blocks and they're just getting folded and mashed. Like you
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: don't want Terrell Bernard having a battle with guards with regularity,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: like and they're just climbing to the second level and
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: crushing him. And then the big one you mentioned it, like,
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: so they have to play more single high to win
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: with numbers, Like, if you can't stop the run, you
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: have to bring more bodies either pre snap or post
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: snap into the box, which limits the coverages you can
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: play on the back end and limits the disguises you
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: can have on the back end. But what also, so
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: that'll hurt any defense, right because then you're getting siloed
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: and all that stuff. But it hurts the bills even
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: more because they're starting safeties or Taylor raping Cole Bishop.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: And if you're going single high, one of those guys
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: is your single high post safety, and Taylor rap does
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: not have the athleticism or the range to be the
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: single high post safety, and cold Bishop in theory has
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: the athleticism in the range, but he doesn't have the processing.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: He doesn't have the eyes and the vision yet to
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: really play and hit his angles and hit his spots.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: He's still learning how to play at that level. So
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: you have to play more single high to stop the run,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: and then you're putting those guys in disadvantageous situations on
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: the back end, and we're seeing that play out in
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: real time against the run. Like Raps angles with the
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: ball are bad because he's coming from depth but doesn't
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: have the speed. Bishop is, you know, struggling with his angles,
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: but then also tackling form. Rap is struggling with his form. Rap.
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna talk about another point. His falloff for tackling
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: has been crazy and unlike him, I don't know what's happening.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: And then yeah you are. You're thirty second in yards
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: after contact per attempt, twenty sixth in EPA per rush.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: The big one though they've upticked in stuff rate over
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: the past couple of weeks. They are currently eleventh and
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: stuff rate, but it has to be higher. They need
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: more tackles for loss and negative plays. We've talked about it,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: you and I have talked about on the show. Their thing.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: It's not and but don't break. It's like gash or
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: get gashed, like you'll run on the bills for ten
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: or nine or eleven, but then they're gonna get you
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: for minus three, or they're gonna get you for minus two,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: and they're gonna get you into second and ten plus
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: or third and nine plus and try and get you
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: off the field that way. Granted, last year they were
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: horrible on third down, especially on third and seven plus,
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: but that's a conversation for another time. They're trying to
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: create those negative plays and it's very give and take
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: their issues. The first several weeks they were getting gashed,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: they weren't gashing anyone else. They weren't creating tackles for
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: loss or no gains or stuffs or anything like that.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: They're also not creating a lot of turnovers, which they
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: also relied on heavily last year. But yeah, I'm in
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: I'm a similar alignment. They have to start stopping to run.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: Mistackles are a huge point. That's another one of mine
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: that I'm gonna talk about. But even just yeah, schematically
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: and structurally, like you've got guys in the same a
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: lot of guys in the same gap. Like last year.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: It was it was a it was a people piece.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: I think more than structure. It was day have the
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: horses up front. This year, they're playing unsound like non
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: fundamental football against the run, no matter what numbers they have,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: and so it's just messy individually from a player perspective,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: and then also from a larger grander picture perspective.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: And the thing about unsound football schematically really does make sense,
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: especially with the way that the Bills want to play
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: the run, especially as we see teams incorporate motion. We
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: talk about all the time they want to bump a
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: guy in and bump a guy out. You can't be
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: unsound up front defending the run if you want to
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: try and bump Taron Johnson into the box as a
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: nickel like that. Again, that's what happened against Atlanta. All
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: they would do is motion and bump to rel Bernard
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: out of the box. So you end up with either
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: Taylor rap spitting down, you'd have Can Lewis in the
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: box or at either of those guys alongside Dorian Williams.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: That's asking to get over the head in the run game.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: So I went and looked it up while you were
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: talking about the run game of some of their stematic
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: and structural.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Why why was yelling about the pain, the pain in
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: my heart.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: So when they're defending the run against a light with
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: a light box less than seven defenders, they're giving up
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: six point one yards per carry, which I believe is
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: eighth and eighth highest, six highest in the NFL, point
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: one two epa per carry. But like you said, they're
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: not creating negative plays. They're nine point seven percent stuff
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: rate is twenty second. Now when you go to a
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: stack box, they're creating a lot of chaos when they
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: load up to really stop the run. With numbers, they
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: can create negative plays, but that leaves you susceptible on
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: the back end because you just don't have the horses.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: Yeah, so you're.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: Tied to You want to try and stop the rum
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: with light boxes, but secondary can't tackle and it can't
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: fit the run, so you gotta send everybody into the
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: box to account for those guys not being able to tackle.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: But then you don't have the secondary to really play
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: in man coverage or single high situations. So you are
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: really you are really booked into a corner. You are
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: playing with one hand behind your back. So it's as
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: much an x's and o's as it is Jimmy's and Joe's,
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: which is why when we led into this conversation, I
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: was like, I don't know if this like soares itself
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: up this season, because this is more than just like
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: a one person thing.
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: Yeah, and especially too when you go with those single
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: high looks in the heavy boxes, when you have multiple
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: guys in the same gap, if there's a crease, there's
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: no layers in the defense to try and stop that guy.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: It's just literally one safety who is the safety, like
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: literal safety, Like he's the one who's got to make
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: that stop. And if he doesn't, which the bill safeties haven't,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: you're in even more trouble. And yeah, it's a I do.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: I do think they in one of my points and
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: the continue will you know, potentially help them. But yeah,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: I'm really interested to see kind of what happens going
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: forward with them, because it's even just from a schematic
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: like everyone for years, you know, you mentioned it, Miami
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: would do it all the time, like jet motion and
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: some orbit stuff and force them to bump at the
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: second level because everybody knows what type of front they're
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: going to play in their box structure and all that.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: The one with Atlanta that really got me was and
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: Bijon's awesome. Right, Like Bijon sick, their offensive line when
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: healthy is sick. They're graded outside zone. And the Bills
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: are terrible at defending outside zone. They've seen it forty
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: five percent of the time this year and they're one
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: of the worst teams against it. So expect more outside
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: zone from a lot of teams. But early on in
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: that game against Atlanta, and I would say, oh, the
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: first quarter and a half, and actually was that. It
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: happened on the Bijon touchdown run and on the allergy
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: or touchdown run. I believe they would They ran essentially
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: like the same thing. It was like, here's motion, let's
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: get you to bump down and then we're gonna run
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: weak side zone and they it's from the same thing,
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: and it was they just kept doing it. I felt
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: like it was in Groundhog Day. They just kept doing
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: the same thing. And I was like, no, like nobody's
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: adjusting yet. To'll be like okay, like let's watch because
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: it's one thing to know it and you just get
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: got right, like Bijeon breaks a tackle or somebody you know,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: you get reached, or Lynstrom makes a great block or
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: Matthew Burgern who's playing sweet it makes a block or
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: you know, Jake Matthews was healthy at the time, gets
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: you okay, you get got whatever. But it was more like, oh, hey,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: we're stepping over here. Ah, we just got creased. It
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: was like, why is somebody? Why is somebody not aware?
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Nobody's on the tablet, the stupid windows tablet, being like, hey, guys,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: they keep hitting us with week Side outside Zone, like
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: they keep hitting it, and it's it's those things added
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: on top of there's just like and I hate saying
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: this because it's it's so like not I don't know
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: if it's it's so nonspecific, but like the there's it
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: just feels like there's something in the water, like and
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: I don't know what it is because they're failing in
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: all these areas that are uncharacteristic of them. And also
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: like it's just ah, I hate it. I hate it.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: I hate it. I hate it. Let's go to your stop.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: So that was your start, right, they got to stop
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: the run?
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: My stop was the run stopped?
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: Oh literally stop the run? Good? Okay, all right, so
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: I I mind was stopped the run. But I that's
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: funny how you did stop the run. Mine was start
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: stopping the run.
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: We're along the same line.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: We're along the same line. Okay. Do you want to
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: go from your stop to your start or from your
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: stop to your continue.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: I'm gonna go to my continue okay, and my continue
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: is continue getting deon walker reps okay. Because with the
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: way that the Bills play deefits, they are not a
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: they're not gonna get a bend from around the edge
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: guy that I've wanted the Bills to start one of
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: my We're not gonna get to the start. But one
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: one of the things that I want them to do
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: is just change up the body types on the edge
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: to just give like I think of like a defensive
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: line unit as like a pitching rotation. You can't have
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: five guys who all throw like, who all only throw fast.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: You can have a you can't have a pitching rotation
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: of all knuckleballers.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: Nope, that's not That's not the Bills. They want all
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: the give me all the tim wakefields. Yeah, like that
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: that's all they want.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: You're cloning ari A Dickey five times, good knuckleballer reference. Now, yeah,
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: you're cloning ari Dicky five times and saying like, yeah,
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: we're gonna go win the World Series, and you're you're
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: asking to get shelled because they're gonna see it. You
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: know what's gonna happen. But Dion Walker is a unique
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: guy in that defense because he's so big. Again, you
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: assume that he's like gonna win with power, but no,
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: he is winning with quickness. He's winning with burst, and
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: I think that's something that's really needed in the interior
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: that defensive line, especially if you want to rotate at
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: Oliver so he stays fresh when you get later on
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: into the season. I think that Dion Walker has been
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: such a revelation this season. I was really worried going
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: into the draft cycle because he just so full disclosure
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: before his before his previous his last season in.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: College, he was season one, he was preseason my preseason
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: number two. We talked about this going I think into
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: the combine last year, we talked about a bunch. That's
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: why I remember how much you liked him.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: Okay, cool, and after the Combine I think I had
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: him around like the one hundreds. So it was a
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: rough year for him. Of course, he was dealing with injuries.
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: He just didn't look healthy. Now that he looks healthy.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: He has shown that he can be an impactful passer,
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: So I want I want the Bills continue to get
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: him those pass rush snaps, especially as they have Rousseau
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: and Atpanza and Joey Bosa sort of crushing the pocket
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: with power. That's going to lead to a lot of
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: Dion Walker splash plays. You're gonna lead to a lot
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: of Deon Walker quick pressures because he is so fast
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: for a guy his size. I really do think it
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: catches offensive linemen off guard because it's like, why is
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: this mountain moving so fast? At me?
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: His it's very you know what it makes you think
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: of it. You're a Disney guy in the second Mamana
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: when they first think they've come upon multi Fatu, but
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: it's really just the giant clam and the cock more
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: coming out and all of us. Cause you're like they're
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: like we made it and all of a sudden it's moving.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: That's like what it is, Like, why is this mountain moving?
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: Oh no, it's a giant clam. This is a problem.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: Yeah, Like oh my god, this this they can move
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: and it's like, uh, it's like when you watch like
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: the anime where like you don't you don't think the
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: character is fast? And then they show the next frame
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: where the character's like right in front of the main guy.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: Yes face. It's like, oh, this guy is a problem.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: So Dion Walker more reps as a pass rusher. I
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: want to see him more on the field, and I
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: think it makes sense to have him just just immediately
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: just quick pressures, getting that guy with juice on the field,
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: especially because the Bills just lack speed at sort of
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: every level of their defense right now. So just getting
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: guys with speed to force quick reactions is going to
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: really help them.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: It's funny you mentioned the archetypes. I alluded to this
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: or in the intro. Yeah they are, you know well
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: so many of the chats said Walkers like Napa from
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: Dragon ball Z. That's funny, nice, nice call, Codder, well done. Yeah,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: they're on the interior. Again, this can be somewhat misleading
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: with size, but interior. They just want penetrators. They want
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: to build their entire interior defensive line out of three texts.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: Even like and so your point, people see Walker and
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: it's like, oh, there's the mountain. It's like, nah, he's
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: a penetrator. He's a six foot seven, three hundred and
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: thirty plus pound penetrator. That's what he is. Even it's funny.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: Daikwon Jones has played very, very good on the interior
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: this year hasn't really gotten talked about, but with Ed
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: Oliver being out, they had him playing more three tech
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: and he's been crushing it. He's their starting one tech.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: So even their like truest one tech in Dayikwon Jones
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: is still more of a three tech than he is
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: an actual one tech. So their interior is all especially
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: when they're when they're really cooking and everybody comes back
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: at Oliver, Daiquon Jones, Lario Withen, Joby, t J. Sanders,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: Dion Walker, it's all just penetrators. It's all shooters, gap shooters.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: That's it. Walker's play has been encouraging amongst that. I
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: you know, he's I wasn't high on the pick because
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: I didn't like spinal defect. I was like, can you
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: can you heal?
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: That?
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: Is that able to be healed? And I saw that
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: on a dude that was six foot seven playing at
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: three hundred and forty pounds, he just looked like he
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: was in pain. Last year at Kentucky, like he and
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: even within that they're lining him up in like a
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: wide nine and a five teck at times that he's
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: beaten dudes off the edge, and I'm like, okay, I
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: get it, like I see it. But I was just like,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: I honestly thought he would essentially take like a red
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: shirt ear and be on the ir And it was like,
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: let's see what we can get him and get him
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: healthy and get him to reshape his body a bit
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: and go from there. The splash plays have been awesome.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: You know, you do see the struggles against the run
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: because again, if he's six foot seven, he's not gonna
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: be able to anchor all the time against double teams.
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: He doesn't have the best change in directions. So if
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: he gets like washed down to your point, he can't
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: like against zone, he can't just sink his hips and anchor.
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: Like he's kind of like, okay, here we go and
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: he gets pushed out of the way. But you'll watch
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: him hit that quick swim on dudes, and it's been
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: he gets it in the past where I've really noticed
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: it the most gap scheme runs, especially once he realizes
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: like uh oh, the center's leaving or uh oh, this
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: guy's trying to down block me. It's a quick step
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: and bang he swims that guard so quickly and he's
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: in the gap. He's did him multiple times in the preseason,
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: he's done in the regular season. Yeah, I've been encouraged
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: by his play. And yeah, it's funny how he even
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: I really felt like they were trolling during the draft
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: when because I was just like, yo, give me, like,
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: give me a space, heater. I want t Tyleek Williams
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: so bad, and there was like, oh, they traded off
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: for a defensive tackle in the second round, and it's like, oh,
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: I know he doesn't offer a lot as a pass rusher,
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: but is it out for Collins? They were like no,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: it's t J Sanders and I was like all right.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: And then they took a mountain of a man in
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: the fourth but that mountain was Dion Walker. And knowing
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: that with what they like at edge, which is all
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: power and all compression, Yeah, it's it's funny. And I
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: really do wonder like if they von Miller was an
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: outlier because he's von Miller, right, And then the Tyleek
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: Williams thing is interesting because he said, you know, the
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: Bills told him if he was there that was gonna
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: be he was their pick in round one. Obviously he wasn't.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: And then they responded by going with t J. Sanders
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: and Walker, who are very much the antithesis of that
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: type of player. I wonder if we get any archetype
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: chaining in the future for those body types, especially upfront,
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: Like but they they really do seem very content to
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: just continue to run out that mold at edge and
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: on the interior. And again, you know Michael talking to
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: Pam like, I'm just gonna date harder, Like that's really
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: kind of what they're leaning into up front. Oh yeah,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: that's a good and and you know they I'm gonna
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: mention this because it ties into my continue. My continue
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: for them is on the defenses, continue to get healthy
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: and get guys back. I know that maybe like a
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: cheating kind of answer, but it ties into the Deon
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: Walker piece. Dion Walker has been playing like defensive tackle
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: two reps for them. He was supposed to be like
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: defensive tackle four or five, depending on how you view TJ. Sanders,
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: Like in a perfect world it was Ed Oliver Daikwon Jones,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: Larry Ogan, Jobe Sanders, and Walker. Walker's been playing like
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: you're starting one tech because of all the injuries they've
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: had on the interior. Daikwon Jones has been your starting
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: three and they've been working that. Jordan Phillips is getting
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: a ton of reps on the interior he should not
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: be seeing and nope, yeah, you're laughing already. You know
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: that should not happen. They've got a bunch of practice
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: squad guys that are seeing reps on the interior like
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: they've just been decimated. They need to get healthy on
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: the interior, need to get healthy at linebacker, like they
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: just need to continue to bring those bodies back. You
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: mentioned Hairston, Like, see what Harston can do as you
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: start to work him in bit by bit. See what
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: Milano can look like when he gets worked in. See
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: what Bernard looks like as he can get worked in.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: Chef Thompson has been their best linebacker, which is awesome
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: for him, but also, yeah, dude, like, dude, he really
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: like it. He obviously doesn't have the athleticism or he's
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: still playing pretty athletic, which is crazy considering his age
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: and all the injuries to his lower body. But you
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: can just like watch him make these plays and it's like, oh, yeah,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: I remember when he was twenty six years old and
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: like one of the best linebackers in football. Like he
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: just And it's also super cool to see dudes like
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: that who he's in the right place position more often
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: than not because he just knows the game. It's cool
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: to see. I got goosebumps thinking about it. It's cool
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: to see like that dude who's like, oh, he brings
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: the veteran experience. You're like, that's the example. Like he's
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: not just all he's veteran experienced. He's been in the
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: league for you know, eight plus years. He's just in
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: the right spots. He knows how to penetrate and when
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: he shoots, it works. Like in coverage he's played well,
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: He's played well against the run. So I'm interested to
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: see how he fits in with this. But yeah, get
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: healthy at the second level, get healthy in the secondary.
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: You get Michael Hoyt back from suspension, you get Larry Ogan,
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: Joey back from suspension. At Oliver came back against Atlanta.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: He should continue to get healthier. Greg Russau has been
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: injured to start the year. He's gotten better with each
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: passing week. Shocking because he's gotten healthier. Keep Joey Bosa healthy,
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: he's actually been pretty good. Wrap him in bubble wrap
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: maybe and keep him healthy and see what you get.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: And then get TJ. Sanders back, you start to work
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: in everybody bit by bit. Daikwon Jones popped his calf
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: before the Atlanta game. That made things worse, But they
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: need to continue to get healthy. Part of which, again
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: tying into what we talked about earlier, they don't have
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: a ton of studs or really any but they've got
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: a bunch of really good players. But a bunch of
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: those really good players are out, and so they don't
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: have the studs to pick up the slack and put
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: everybody in their backpack and carry him across the finish line.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: They need those dudes. They're already starting a little bit
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: behind the eight ball because they don't have those A
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: tier s tier dudes. So having there anybody really, but
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: especially in this quantity and quality, being injured and then
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: having to push larger roles onto depth players is the
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: last thing they can afford. And again, like I for
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: the wards that I still think Walker has, he deserves
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: a huge tip of the cap because he's had to
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: play legitimate starter minutes considering what's happened up front, and
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: he's performed admirably like he he should not. I'm not
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: saying this is like a negative to him, but he
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: was not supposed to play this much on the interior
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: to start the year. Like we shouldn't have been in
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: that position. Joe Andresen shouldn't be play starting reps for
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: linebacker when they go into three linebacker sets. But they're
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: just banged up where they have to continue to get healthy.
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: And honestly, I'm not saying this is like a guarantee
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: and this is the reason for it, Like if you
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: told me they're gonna have a bunch of injuries in
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: October and November, but it means they'll be completely healthy
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: come playoff time. I would be fine being ten and
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: seven and getting into the playoffs and being completely healthy,
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: then having the one seed and knowing that four or
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: five important dudes are going to be out.
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think that's the trade off of you know,
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: that's always been the Bills thing, and come playoff time,
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: they've never been healthy. They've never been one hundred percent
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: going into the playoffs, and that's always been what's kept
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: them away from the Super Bowl. It's nobody's ever been healthy.
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: So the spin zone is, hey, maybe all these injuries
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: happen now means they won't happen later on. Yeah, I again,
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: I just my biggest worry is speed and team speed.
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: If you can get Taron Johnson, if you can get
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: Milano and Bernard back, that will help your speed at
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: the second level. You get Harrison back, that should be
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: a boost in the secondary, like you will be a
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: little bit faster. So maybe that just uptick a little
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: bit and just team speed will help the Bills defense
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: kind of shore up some of the inconsistencies of the
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: passing unit. But like you said, they just got to
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: get healthy.
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: Yeah. They've got this weird mix on defense where they're
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: like they're not like big and powerful, so you'd think like, oh, okay,
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: so that means they're small and fast, but they're like not,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: They're like the medium and slow overall. It's just just
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: weird like like mix of Yeah, like they they they
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: don't have juice, but they usually think like, okay, they
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: don't have juice because they're a bunch of like the
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: they have a Monstars lineup, and it's like, oh, they're
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: like oh, they're the nineties where like, oh, because Levon
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: Kirklin is one of your linebackers on these three hundred
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: and twenty five pounds, and it's like, no, it's yeah,
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: it's weird, especially on the back end, like I I
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: that's it and that's even it too, Like say, what's
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: really like I'm not putting out there or maybe I
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: am trying to reverse jinx it. Like my biggest fear
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: is everything really falling apart, because then how do you
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: like you have to rebuild everything and that takes years,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: Like because you've committed so much to this philosophy and
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: this identity defensively from a schematic standpoint, from a coverage standpoint,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: from a roster building body types archetype standpoint, that if
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: it doesn't work out, are they cognizant enough to realize
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: it's not working out and they can change it? Because
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: you want that. But then also like that's like a
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: two to three year thing, man, Like I think we,
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: especially Bills fans, I think got spoiled by like, oh,
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: they rebuilt the entire offense last year and moved to
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: like a condensed formation run the ball team, and we're
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: one of the best offenses and josh Anna won the MVP.
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: It's hard to do that. And this is fair comment
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: from the chat saying sunk cost fallacy. Yeah, that's absolutely fair.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: And rather than just to keep sitting, well, we're already
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: spent all this money, let's keep at it. But yeah,
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: it's I just want I just need something to work, please,
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: And I'm hoping the health. I'm putting a lot of
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: chips into the Michael Hoyt part of the table. I
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: thought he would be a good chess piece for them.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: They need him to be now, Like I really think
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: they need him to unlock a bunch of the stuff
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: they want to do with like overload type stuff or
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: just I feel like he's the And it's funny because
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: he's not that level of player, although I do again,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: you have talk to you about him. Like I loved
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: him with the RAMS. I watched so much RAMS tape
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: because all the dudes that they have that I like,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: and he kept flashing for me. But I really feel
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: like it's the episode four of Star Wars and it's
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: like the recording on R two and I'm Princess Leigh
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: and it's like save us, Michael Hoyt, You're our only
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: hope instead of like, O, we want Kanobe. Like that's
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: where I feel like I'm man at right now, and
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: like he that's not who he is, like he it's not,
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: but what he represents is so much more. I just
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: want to see him at edge. I want to see
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: him in the A gap. I want to see him
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: an off ball linebacker, and I want to see more
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: sims and creepers and everything he can do. And like
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: they need him to be like they r J says
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: Hoyt needs to be the second coming of Lawrence Taylor
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: for this team to be elite. At this point. R
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: J is a huge and consistent pessimist, but that was
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: very funny.
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: I am less optimistic about Michael Hoyt than you are,
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: partially because the last time I saw Michael Hoyt, he
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: was getting routed up by Alman Ross Saint Brown naturally
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: because they were just leave him in coverage all the time.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: Yeah, so I think the thing. But that's why I
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: don't want to be like he needs to be like
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: just chess piece rusher everywhere.
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: Chess piece rusher. Mix him in and coverage occasionally. He
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: doesn't need to be your We're in five minute front,
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: we gotta drop somebody drum.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: So so help me God if they and I don't
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: think they would do this, but so help me god
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: if they do. Like a Rex Ryan Bills where he
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: was like, hey, Mario Williams, you're gonna be dropping into
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: coverage a ton and they're like, why are you doing
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: that with Mario Williams. He's one of the best rushers
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: in football. Yeah, I want that every once in a
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: while is like the change up or the knuckle to
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: be like, oh, they dropped him into coverage and he
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: was right there. And I don't want him like in
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: coverage like out in the hook curl or like the
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: flat like I want him as like the low hole player.
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: I want him get one of those like big guy
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: defensive tackle type interceptions where I was in the like
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: dropping hot bang or you know what, give me, give
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: me that, and then tie him into a nice coffee house.
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: Oh and just start to play those games. And then
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: even we might slant some dudes and have him come
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: through on the coffee house and he's going in through
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: the far side. B Just like those types of things.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: They they need, they need more of that. In general,
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: I just want any I'm just I just want something
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: besides four down rush for I just I'm not asking
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: for the world. Just want some different things up front.
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: And yeah, and I feel like again I like Hoy,
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: but that's part of my point, Like I feel like
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: I'm it's sad to be like putting so much onto
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: him because I'm like, that's not who he is, Like
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: he can't do that, but I'm hopeful.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: I do want to say one last thing about the
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: Bill's defense is something I've said a lot before on
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: social media. You can't be you can be slow, but
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: you can be big as a defense the Eagles have
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: They're not the fastest team on defense, but they are
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: incredibly big and they can do a lot of different stuff.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: You can't you can be small but be really fast.
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: That was like the whole thing about the Cardinals was
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: like they had no size at all, but everybody was
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: flowing to the ball and Buddha Baker was a banshee
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: to an extent. That Texans are not that big, ye,
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: but they always want to take somebody's helmet.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: Off literally literally that he will will literally do that.
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: You can't be both. You can't be slow and small
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: and small. Bills have kind of found themselves in both
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: the slow and small part of defense, and it's really
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: hard to live that way. It's really hard to live with, Hey,
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: if we're gonna try and get fast flow and we're
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: gonna try and spin guys into the box late because
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: we know they have the speed to make up for it,
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: it's hard to live that way when your safeties aren't fast.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: And it's hard to live that way when you only
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: have two hundred and ninety pound defensive tackles and Deon
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: Walker who is more of a three tech because he
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: can't drop his hips. So it's it's hard to live
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: that way. You're making defense harder on himself. But I
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: do think there's an opportunity, there's an area where it
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: might work.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: Yes, And you know what the Bill's defense is, and
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: I know he has the destructo disc and it's that's baller.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: The Bill's defense is krilling. Yeah, it's this point right now,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: And it's like, you don't want, you don't want, you
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: don't want your whole side of the ball to be krilling.
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: It's fine to have a Krilling or two, right, but
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: that's because you gotta have a go Haan somewhere or
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: a Goku or figures got the flare at least once
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: there you go, that's right, and man, but you know
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: what they're their destructo disc is the stuff rate which
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: they need like and then so you just live through
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: the destructo disc and you try and go for their Yeah,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: that's what it hit me when you were like, you
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: can't be slow and small and I was like, oh man,
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: they're throwing, like that's what we're at. That's what we're
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: at with this defense. Oh no, what's your start?
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: My start is start looking for help with team speed
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: at the deadline. And I'm saying team speed in general
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: for this defense and not typically safety because you're not
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: going to find a lot of like instant safety relief
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: at the deadline. Kyle Duggar might be the best option available,
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: but he's in the division, probably not going to get
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: traded within the division, and he also is a box safety,
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: which doesn't help out where you already lack. Nope, Amani
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: Hooker maybe from Tennessee, you might you might be able
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: to swing that. He also just got I think he
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: just got an extension, so maybe might be might not
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: be a thing. Tony Adams in New York, but again,
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: within a division, you're just the safety options are pretty barren. Now,
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: if you want to add in the cornerback room, I
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: think that's a little more promising. Now you might get
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: them overlap with Taron Johnson, especially considering what Taron Johnson does. Now,
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: important is the defense. But Alonte Taylor would be really fun.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: My god, he's pure, pure juice and violence. Yeah.
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: He is the best pass rushing defensive back in the NFL.
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: Right yeah, yeah. I feel like he gets like twenty
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: sacks a year. I know, so he goold yeah.
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: And it's not just like he's getting all these unblocked
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: buttzes that turn the sacks. He's like hitting dudes with
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: like ghost moves.
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, they can dip a dip and rip
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: a little bit. It's like, all right, look at you playing.
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, let me let me get let's let's get
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: you in a wide. See what happens?
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: Like you open a two point a wide nine off
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: the line, what you got?
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: What happens? You know the Luannarumo lined up Asky Doolan
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: past ye against the Cardinals. I just want to see
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: something with camp Taylor Bridge. Let's try something. But outside
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: of that maybe Cam Taylor brit as an outside corner
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: if you're if you really feel like taking on like
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: ud uh, he just needs a confidence boost.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: Which is crazy because he one of my like not knocks,
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: but like I remember when he came out in Nebraska.
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: I loved him, but I thought he was like too
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: confident in himself to the point that he was like
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: always getting into fights and skirmishes to like, this is
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: the dude who when the Bengals came into Buffalo and
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: beat them in the divisional round. Yeah, the divisional round.
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: In the snow first play of the game, he's in
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: press on Stefan Diggs and he jams him and punches
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: him right in the face and then backs up like
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: talking to him, letting him know. And I was like, oh, like,
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: look at the swag on this dude, Like he's just
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: feeling it. So it's crazy that right now that he's
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: like lacking that because he's just was all violence and
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: confidence and now it seems like that's gone away.
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: I think it's part due to the new defense in
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: Cincinnati being more man based. He's not a man corner.
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: I think he's an Al Golden Yeah, that's the Al
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: goolon defense. Baby, he is gonna get get in your face,
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: playman coverage. You just gotta beat us, Cam Taylor Britt.
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: I think he uses length and he uses his feed well.
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: But in zone, I think he's a cover two corner.
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: I think he's able to get underneath routes really well,
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: which I think will mesh with what the Bills want
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: to do. And again, he just has some more athleticism
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: he can bring to the room.
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: And he's a really good tackle. He's a really good tackler,
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: real good tackler.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: The last one. I don't know if he gets traded
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: because he might be more of a like we're gonna
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: build with him in the future. But Patricks or Tavia second, Hey,
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: you know that'd be great. That'd be awesome if you
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: can swing that. I was gonna say. Roger McCreery from
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: the Titans.
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: Dude, my man, I love careery coming out.
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: He and Taron Johnson might be a little too similar
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: when it comes to size, but that also makes sense
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: because he has unlimited levels of dog in him. Dude,
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: he is going to constantly fight for the ball. He's
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: gonna constantly be going after the ball. I sort of
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: before he got traded to the Jets. I sort of
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: hope that the Bills might have made a move for
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: like Jarvis Brownlee.
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: Dude, you're name and all. I feel like you're in
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: my brain. You're naming all those corners who like I love, yeah, dude,
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: and probably played good for the Jets in this a
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: little bit that he's better now.
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: Need some feistiness, something some oomph.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: At the Cats, get us and jam him and beat
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: the hell out of them.
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: Yeah, because if you're gonna play a pass rush unit
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: that wants to get late pressure, their getaffs aren't that fast,
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: but they want to collapse the pocket if you can.
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: If you get late pressure and you also play off
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: coverage and zone.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: Dude, you're yep, yep.
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: That's not a great way to play defense. You have
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: to you have to go and get in somebody's face.
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: You gotta go and try and slow down the tempo
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: of an offense. So I think they need guys that
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: are willing to They're willing to put hands on a
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: received line of scrimmage. You gotta you gotta be a
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: little physical. Put some, get a little grimy, get some,
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: get some dirt on the jersey at at corner, So
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: those are the guys. Really, this was just to give
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: a little bit of a primer for what bills fans
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: can expect at the deadline if you're looking for secondary help.
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: Like I said, corner is much more, much more of
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: a thing than safety because you're not really gonna find
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: a lot of safety help this year.
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: No, yeah, it's uh satan. I'm hoping, like with the
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: safety room, the call is coming from inside the house
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: and it like wrap just I just need wrap to
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: be improve is tackling like. But I'm also I didn't
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: have a high bar for the safety room, so I'm
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: not saying like and then everything will be fine. It's
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: still not gonna be good, but that should help things
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: a little bit. I'm even to the point now where
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: I'm like through it. Let's throw Jordan Hancock out there
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: and see kind of what we can get. Or Jordan
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: Poyer didn't look terrible last week, let's see what he
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: can do. Ha ha ha, But yeat, I mean getting
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: a safety in this grouping is tough. I loved so
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: many of the corner names that you put there. Corner
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: for me is murky with them, because I feel like
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: you need someone ideally to start ahead of Trey White,
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: but then you also want to bring in Harston along slow.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: But then you also needed to be someone that is
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: okay maybe being corner three next year, or is on
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: an end of their deal this year and is okay
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: not starting the whole year, and then maybe does that
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: hurt them going into free agency a little bit? So
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: like I feel like, because like their answer at corner
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: two should be Max Hairston, but if he's not ready
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: this year, that's fine, but he's the corner next year,
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: so you could This isn't like a when they got
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: Rasoul Douglas it was like oh sweet, and then he
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: can start for them the next year too.
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: You can't. You don't.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: You're not a trade for Ristull Douglas because you got
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: your starters next year. Are Benford and Harriston in theory
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: or they should be? But man, I would love I
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: every name, so many of the names you mentioned. I
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: was such a fan of the real I. It's so
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: annoying too that like it's like, oh, well, they can't
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: just get a corner like of course, like that's kind
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: of what they need, but they also like can't kind
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: of get it. But they also Cook, it's just so frustrating.
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: And when you were saying, like they need somebody to
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: start right now in case Harrison isn't ready. But understand
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: that Harrison is the guy moving forward again Cam Taylor
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: Britt finally un of his contract.
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: Right, That's what I'm saying, Like, that's why I think
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: he's the perfect He tackles, he's a competitor. I hate
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: every saying this. So many people say, but dog all day.
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: But like he can play the carbages they want to play.
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: He can tackle, and then yeah, he could ball out
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: a little bit honestly, probably still at worst work in
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: a rotation with Harriston down the stretch or I don't know.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: Let's also not forget too like Harston. Harriston didn't even
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: play preseason games. He didn't even really get any time
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: in camp. So like he's not here.
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: Throwing him frying pan into the fire, You're throwing him
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: like fire frying pan into a volcano.
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: Yeah, he doesn't even like he's like, wow, this is
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: really hot? Is that lava? Like that's exactly where he's at.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: And so he could be completely healthy, No, brace, everything
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: might look good this week, he might not be like
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: ready to go for several weeks. Man, that's going to
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: piss off a lot of Bills fans because they think
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: McDermot do just want to play rookies. But yeah, like you,
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: you could bring in Cam Taylor Britton. At worst he's
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: starting into the middle of November, or they're kind of
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: platooning a little bit. I would. That's why I think
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: Cam Taylor brit is so perfect because he fits like
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: that contract situation, but I think he also fits stylistically
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: and schematically. And also I watched so much of his
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: tape when he was coming out of Nebraska, and I
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: was such a fan of his, So yeah, I would, Uh,
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: I would absolutely take that. Oh I like those a lot.
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: What did I what is my Oh? My stop is yeah,
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: because I did start at to continue. Oh yeah, my stop.
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: I tied it into the run. My stop was just
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: missing tackles. Stop missing tackles. Like That's where I'm at.
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: And I just had some more stats with that. I
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: mentioned the yards ever contact for rush, which is terrible.
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: The Bills are also fifth in rush yards over expected
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: per rush. They also have the second most runs of
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: ten or more yards allowed with thirty one. And then
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: here's some fun safety stats, which are also painful. There's
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: eighty seven qualifying safeties. Okay, Cole Bishop is seventieth in
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: mistackle rate at eighteen percent. He's got six missed tackles.
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: Taylor Rap, out of those eighty seven safeties, is eighty
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: fourth in mistackle rate. Do you want to guess his
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: mistackle rate?
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: Oh god, it's gonna be something brutal, is it. I'll
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: be into like sure fired double digits. Yes, oh lord?
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: Fifteen twenty five percent.
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: Oh my god, he's missed eight.
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: Tackles twenty five percent miss tackle rate for Reference. This
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: is even crazy, and this is why I won for
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: Reference last year. Three. So he's missed eight tackles this
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: year already through six games. Last year he missed three
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: the entire year. His miss tackle rate last year was
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: three point six. His miss tackle rate the year before
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: was four point seven. He his calling card has been
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: being a sure sound tackler. He's never been the most
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: fleet of foot, he's never been rangy, he's never been
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: super athletic, but he's always been a sure tackler. And
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: for people who say, like, oh yeah, because he always
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: played in the box, nah, last year he was primarily
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: a deep safety for the Bills, which was more frustrating
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: because it was like he has he's not that guy,
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: how is he playing that? But he's great coming from depth, angles, pacing, form,
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: all of it. So it's not like all, of course
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: he has a good tackle, right because he's already by
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: the box. No coming from depth. He was so good
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: and sound in LA. With the Bills, he's fallen off huge.
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: So yeah, they just it's it's I don't want to
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: say it starts with their safeties because they're on the
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: back end, so it really starts up front. But yeah,
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: stop missing tackles. Also, start stopping the run. You can
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: flip whichever. I didn't know which like this would. The
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: start and stop were really hard for me because like
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: I can manipulate him anyway I want. I also want
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: them to stop playing so much spot drop zone coverage
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: and or start being better at it. Like it's just
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: I haven't seen guys cover grass so much in the
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: NFL that I have this year, and guys just seemingly
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: getting lost. That's another one too, where like some there's
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: there's just some disconnect on the back end because there's
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: just there's so much space between the second and third level,
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: and there's so much space across the second level in
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: the curl flats, hook curls everything. Guys are just not
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: aligned and guys are just Oh we saw it with
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: Drake London. But then also that game plan was terrible.
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: What does Drake London eat spot drop zone? What should
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: we do against Drake London not play spot Okay, well
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: we're gonna play a bunch of spot drop and then
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: guess what happened They played a bunch of man in
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: the second half and it got better. Who would have thought.
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: I wonder if the spot drop zone prevalent is because
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: they just don't have the guys.
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: That's why might have theat is because I want them
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: to play. I want more man but an ideal world,
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: give me more zone match. It could be a true
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: man match, it could be zone match whatever, right, But
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: I don't know if it's Do they think, Okay, that's
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: more complex, we have to have a ton of rules.
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: We don't want to have that, Or is it we
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: don't think rap can match with dudes. We don't think
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: Trey White can match with dudes. We might not think
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: cold bitchup Bishop. He was kind of a bit noch
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: cold Bishop can match with dudes like that. I think
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: is fair too. And then also this is a good
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: coming from Charles who says no speed ant they're scared
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: to beat deep. That's also part of too. They're so
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: focused on keeping a cap on everything and keeping everything
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: in front of them. I don't think they want to
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: give the opportunity of like, okay, zone match or any
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: type of match turns into man and we got individuals
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: carrying guys vertical, and I think they're fearful of that.
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: I think that's an excellent point from you, JP, and
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: probably very plausible.
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: I do think it's got a large part to do
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: with the fact that they just they don't have their
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: guys back there, and so when you're missing a whole
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: bunch of guys who don't really have enough reps communicating
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: with each other. I remember a couple of years ago
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: in Vegas for the Super Bowl, I asked Dane Jackson
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: and Lamar Hamlin. I asked them how they were so
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: good at matching coverages and passing passing route combinations off
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: to each other. It's like, Yeah, it's just communication. It's
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: we rep these all the time, and so it's just
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: basically like a mind meld, we know like, all right,
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: we'll pass this guy here if he does this, and
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: I'll come do that if he does this. Now, they
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: don't have those guys that have that experience. They don't
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: have a lot of guys who can match coverage. And
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: also you don't have the linebackers with Milano out, with
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: Bernard out, you don't have like you don't want to
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: put Dorian Williams and Shaq Thompson scenarios where you have
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: to match coverage with a number two on the back
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: side of quarters, Like that's going that's going to end poorly.
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: So I think carry carry the three vertically, like.
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: You're not asking Dorian Williams to carry three verticals the
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: final three. I think when they get their guys back,
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: I hope they'll do them a little more match coverage
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: because that's something that the Bills were known for a
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: lot of. But I do wonder if it doesn't come back,
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: is that just because they don't have the speed.
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: And that that's like the that's the annoying thing in
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: my brain because I'm like, is it the horses or
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: do they not want to do that in general? Because
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: I just again I refuse to believe that they brought
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: in a man coverage specialist, Mike Pellegrino, who was man
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: all day for New England for years and years and
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: years and years. I refuse, I refuse to believe they
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: didn't bring in him, plus Ryan Nielsen up front to
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: not be like, we're gonna bring more five man pressures,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: We're gonna do more creative stuff up front, We're gonna
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: do more sims and creepers and play more man or
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: match or whatever in some capability, Like, yeah, I wonder,
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: And that's what part of me was like thinking of
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: working that into one of the stops and working that
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: into a start and then just combining stopping the run
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: of missing tackles on into one. But I didn't because
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: of literally exactly what you said, like that variable, like
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: I I don't know if they even want to start that,
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: because I don't know if they think they have the
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: guys to start it, which is goes back to roster
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: building and archetypes.
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: That's a bigger issue that can't be solved this season.
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: Correct correct, And that takes me. I'm just gonna go
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: to the Senior Bowl again and find all these dudes
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: that I love and be like, man, these guys are sweet,
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: and I'll be like, man, bills are gonna take any
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: of these guys. Yeah, do you have any like six
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: foot five slow power guys. Where are they? Oh they're
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: over here. Okay cool, let me go watch those guys.
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: Yeah, let me find let me find all your finest
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: speed to power guys.
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: Not even speed to power. It's just power. Like like
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: I was just saying length to power. Yeah, power to power.
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: That's it. Like there's I would cancel saying like I
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: would kill for speed to power, like anything that has
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: speed in it, Like, give me that.
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: I just you just want you just want a car
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: that can get get a little bit. You want a
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: car that goes zero to sixty a little faster. Yeah,
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: well you want to push the speed limit a little bit.
- 1:49:37Speaker 2: And the Bills don't have anybody that's really pushing the
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: speed limit.
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: No, we're just driving on a just the Toyota Prius
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: of a defense.
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: I'm saying, they're driving hummers.
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's that's even better. Yeah. I was thinking
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: small and slow, so I went Prius. But yeah, they're
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: just like a but on the edge, yeah.
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: On the edge and on the interior.
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: If you put an Oliver, if.
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: You gave if you gave ed Oliver a Jeppenesa's quick power,
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: or if you gave a Japanese at Oliver's like lateral quickness,
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: that would be so much, that'd be so cool. Yeah,
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: but just again, Sean McDermott and this team have a type.
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: They have a guy that they like, and it's cool
- 1:50:24Speaker 2: to have your guys. But sometimes you gotta go away
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: for the knuckleballer. You gotta go find Somebodyel third ninety five.
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: Yeah you can't. Just yeah, yeah, I don't even I
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: have so many thoughts going through my head and they're
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: all just frustrating. But the Bills have been in dire
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: straits before, seemingly at bie weeks. They've looked ugly at times,
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: and they've seemingly year in and year out, find a
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: way to win the division, get to the final four
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: in the conference or championship game. We'll see what they
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: could potentially do coming out of this buy and going
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: through twenty twenty five. JP Anny, I don't know why
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: I thought we'd end earlier than we're at right now.
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: Actually have some price actually not no, yeah, this is
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: kind of no actually this is kind of shorter for
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: what we normally do, so we actually did well. Any
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: final thoughts on anything, it could be on the bills,
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: it could be on the entire league, or if you want.
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: As I mentioned DNDI intro, you have moved onward and
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: upward in your career, so feel free. The floor is yours.
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: Whatever you want to talk about, plug anything and everything.
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: You're awesome.
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: The floor is yours, so real quick before I tell
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: you guys where you can find me. Also, just thank
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: you again, thank you for giving me the platform to
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: talk about the bills. The bills should more than likely
- 1:51:40Speaker 2: and probably will be fine. Like this, the AFC is
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: not in a state where like there's just one dominant
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: team and.
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: That everybody everybody vulnerabilities.
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: Everybody can get got at any time. And when you
- 1:51:55Speaker 2: have Josh Allen an offensive line that they do, it
- 1:51:58Speaker 2: gives you a wide margin for air to give yourself
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: less of a chance of getting God, I do think defensively.
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: When you get the guys back, we'll see what happens.
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: If it looks sort of similar. Once the guys get back,
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: then there will be problems. But everybody, just like, calm
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: down for now, like it's okay when people get healthy.
- 1:52:18Speaker 2: We'll see what happens from there. But you can find
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: me at CBS Sports. I write for CBS Sports Weekly.
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: You can find me more more than Mike. You'll find
- 1:52:30Speaker 2: me on Pushing the Pile, a podcast I co host
- 1:52:33Speaker 2: with Kyle Long and Mike Rinner talking about football today
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: or every Tuesday. I have my own segment called JP's Playbook,
- 1:52:39Speaker 2: where I talk about cool plays I see throughout the
- 1:52:41Speaker 2: week that we have that show. We have Sunday Reaction
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: Show Sunday Night on our YouTube channel, then Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: Thursday content throughout the week. You'll find you can find
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: me on CBS Sports HQ talking about football. But just
- 1:52:54Speaker 2: follow me, see what I'm doing, see where I'm going.
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: Your journey has been awesome to track. I remember I
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: think I said something to you about it, but I
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: turned on the TV TV and you were sitting there
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: on CBS Sports in a ball or suit, looking like, yeah,
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: look like you belonged to an evolution talking ball. I
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: think you were talking NFC South stuff, if I remember correctly,
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: just spitting off all this game and this dapper suit
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: on national television. It was so cool to see Yeah,
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: you were already one of the best still are and
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: it's awesome just to be able to chop it up
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: with you as much as we have, Like with how
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: much you know, and again I say it all the time,
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: like your personality, the things you talk about who you
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: are as a person, and then your ball knowledge and
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: how you build it all together in one complete package.
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: You are awesome and I'm really happy to see the
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: growth that you've had. And again, thank you for taking
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: so much time to sit here and wax poetically about
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: why things are terrible for the bills, but also maybe
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: not so bad and why things could be okay, especially
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: considering Yeah, I reach out to you last minute because
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: I screwed up when I was supposed to reach out
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: to you earlier than I did, so I appreciate you
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: even more.
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: Of course, thank you for having having me. All.

- 1:54:12Speaker 2: Thanks for having me.
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: Hey, mister Jpacosta, one of the best. He is, if
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: I am remembering correctly, The I think he's been the
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: first guest of the in season. People that are because
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: I've done so much film focused but obviously there's no
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: I didn't want to do another film focus this week
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: episode coming out of the bye and then with also
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: you know what we're Eric and I are doing in
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: the film room tomorrow. So yeah, I think, Yeah, he's
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: awesome and it's yeah. If you haven't already, go follow
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: him at Acosta thirty two JP, I'm Blue Sky and
