- 0:40Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt penknife, or the Doctor
- 0:44Who come true podcast. My name is Chad.
- 0:48Hello. Hello.
- 0:50And who are you? I'm EJ fault.
- 0:53Hello. Hello.
- 0:56Do other people do the intro? Yeah.
- 0:59Might everyone do? I'll my Toby.
- 1:00Hey, don't do it. I've met Gary Russell.
- 1:02Do it every fucker on this thing.
- 1:04As managed to say, I'm super blunt penknife.
- 1:07Okay, here was me thinking all Look, we're breaking tradition
- 1:10were breaking convention, but only just, it's nice to hear you
- 1:15say though. I yeah, I know, I know, maybe
- 1:19it's just because on I'm just used to on 91 being the one to
- 1:23say and then I'm used to hearing you say, welcome back to a
- 1:27hamster. With a blunt, penknife suck one
- 1:29up because it's been, it's been a little while since we've done
- 1:31a 91. Can you just turn on intros?
- 1:33Well please, I'm sure she'll for that.
- 1:36Merry Christmas to all of you at home.
- 1:39I don't think I had who has it. Go again.
- 1:42Hello and welcome to the gnomon. Be praised, I'm Jack.
- 1:45And I'm Joe. It's like it's like a crossover
- 1:51episode, but it's still just us. It's it, it's all to podcast
- 1:56fornicating. My God.
- 1:58Here we go. It's a beautiful thing.
- 2:01Beautiful. You love to see it happen?
- 2:02Well, I mean, the thing is, is that both on hamster and on I'm
- 2:05on they usually ten minutes of waffle, the beginning.
- 2:09Ask Jealousy indeed, indeed, indeed, what could waffle it is
- 2:13all I'm going to say to you. So it's been like about five
- 2:16hundred episodes. Now since you last appeared on
- 2:18how to book. And that's not because that
- 2:20isn't because I wanted you on how to apply this one is because
- 2:24you've been extremely busy, you know, that's right.
- 2:26Doing actually things as well as work-related things and social
- 2:30things, but also we have had our own podcast as well, which is
- 2:34pretty, which is where you and I have been together.
- 2:37Indeed, indeed, it's It's generally one of the sad things
- 2:42that I didn't get to do as much of this year because I just got
- 2:46so busy doing, you know, working full-time and doing local
- 2:50theater in the after, in the evenings that I just didn't have
- 2:53time to watched watched Doctor, Who, and even more.
- 2:56So it's great to be back. Can I ask you to do something
- 3:00then? Because it's probably been about
- 3:04six, seven months since we've released an I'm on episode and I
- 3:08don't know how many People that listen to hamster that listen to
- 3:11No One. So would you please do some
- 3:13marketing and tell everybody listening to this about the 91
- 3:17be Pros podcast. So you're on and what it's all
- 3:19about. Well you can jump in at any
- 3:23time. If I start pitching it badly,
- 3:26then I won't be praised is the Doctor Who podcast by Joe Ford
- 3:30and Jack Shanahan who have been at who been added together since
- 3:33the very beginning. If, and if you want, what?
- 3:39More kind of ambiguous kind of waffling like that.
- 3:43You just need to hop over to another podcast because it goes
- 3:46on for much longer than this. But like unlike ham star, it's
- 3:51not commentaries. We have long.
- 3:56It's actually very, very, very long, very unedited
- 4:00conversations about, basically, whatever do Doctor, Who episode.
- 4:04We want, we want to talk about. And, you know, I think one of
- 4:08our recurring, Jokes. Is that will go?
- 4:12Yeah, we're going to talk about this next week, and we
- 4:14definitely don't actually follow up that.
- 4:16We just choose something else. Wait, we were talking about
- 4:18during the long game for about a season and a half and there was
- 4:24someone who commonly wasn't it? So, when you guys can do the
- 4:26long game who we haven't named Roger, but we didn't know his
- 4:30name was Roger. And then eventually we did talk
- 4:32about the long game but we decided to just do a 5 minutes
- 4:3555 seconds segment, at the beginning of an episode I do you
- 4:40remember about that I do now? I do know because that's you're
- 4:43describing that us like we definitely did.
- 4:46Talk about the love game but General, we cover some fun
- 4:50subjects and we we did the trial of Steven Moffat, which went to
- 4:56five and a half hours long. Well, apparently the the name of
- 5:05be praised is very big and it wasn't Ohio, Ohio.
- 5:11O people of Ohio. Thank you for listening to the
- 5:14night, won't be pressed. Yeah.
- 5:15Jimmy, when we remade Dimensions In Time?
- 5:18How could I forget? That was what the best things
- 5:20that ever happened, in my chili, you also mr.
- 5:24McCoy, still sounds like a do. Yo, man, you know, and which you
- 5:28never fail to remind me about with it.
- 5:31It is Li me. I'm very difficult to get 200 of
- 5:35ha. Ha ha, we've had a lot of, and
- 5:41just to say, we're not going anywhere.
- 5:43We are sort of, on, we're on our 1985 Hiatus at the moment,
- 5:46whilst we're busy with us. Other things but we are
- 5:49definitely planning on getting back to it.
- 5:51Indeed indeed my sky think our schedules of code to be slightly
- 5:55nicer. Yeah.
- 5:59I what do you say? On this bit of the cool things
- 6:22with you. The constant erupting being
- 6:25polite. No, I was gonna say this isn't
- 6:27necessary. I mean not the first time I've
- 6:29been back since the very beginning of hamster, since I
- 6:33was your second guess? Yeah.
- 6:36I did one, we've won with Joe list and then I did the brain of
- 6:39morbius, a few straight after. That's right.
- 6:41Eye is what I just learned that I morbius shall return from the
- 6:45grave, you know? I could always so Pilots
- 6:48couldn't, I don't be fresh flowers, but I was going to say,
- 6:53you know, I've been away for quite a while but that's not for
- 6:56lack of trying, no Jack. And I recently recorded a
- 7:02two-and-a-half hour long commentary on the Steven Moffat
- 7:09enormous success was called again.
- 7:13Well, not in time and the doctor falls.
- 7:15That's right. And boy, a boy that was the most
- 7:18wonderful recording that only half exists.
- 7:25I forgot to press record my end. So my father recording will
- 7:30never ever be heard but Jack smarts wit and Charisma are
- 7:34there for posterity. Yeah, I still I still maintain
- 7:40that. You should record the Coventry
- 7:41with somebody else and just say I'm there and then you can just
- 7:45edit me in and it's like I was that I was never absent which
- 7:49you know, like my overall fryers.
- 7:51Done has been in this situation where it's been half recorded
- 7:56and he has literally taken the other half of the recording and
- 8:00then recorded his bits into it. Well, if you think I'm doing
- 8:05that for two and a half hours, wow, you got nothing.
- 8:08I think I will do again in six months.
- 8:11I forgot what we said. I that's right.
- 8:15I was not accounting for the human cost involved in this.
- 8:19We could do it, but should we I don't know.
- 8:23Do I have on it right? That that I have you done
- 8:27Genesis of the Daleks? Yeah, I have now.
- 8:29Yeah, yeah. It's good recording as well.
- 8:32You know what six partners are hardly, you know, six Partners
- 8:35when you have to try because you kind of you kind of get it all
- 8:38out in the first couple of episodes about the regulars and
- 8:41about the guest stars and it sets in the direction on all of
- 8:44this. And then you've got four
- 8:45episodes, you gotta feel somehow Is it is it part 5 is part 5
- 8:50tricky? Yeah, usually six.
- 8:53Good. It's wrapping things up sort of
- 8:54the pace picks up and because I mean, when I did space museum,
- 8:57no space museum. The sensor is with Gary Russell
- 9:00and come if so free. We were so lucky in in things to
- 9:02say I've just started interviewing him about his
- 9:04career for the other four episodes, which is much more
- 9:07interesting than the sense for us.
- 9:11I'm sure that's actually quite an interesting commentary, track
- 9:14them with that pretty well Jack. What are we talking about today?
- 9:19What I chosen for us? I so, this is very nice.
- 9:26Bang on the money for us. This is almost nine minutes into
- 9:29into the track before. We actually even announced the
- 9:31title. Whoo, good gone us.
- 9:34We are here to talk about the series dying.
- 9:37Christmas special, the husbands of River Song.
- 9:40Well, try territory here for me or I've got Steven Moffat.
- 9:44We've got River Song. Clara.
- 9:47Now, we haven't got her in this. Okay, no Clark car is gone but
- 9:51we still, we have for. We do have Matt Lucas who you
- 9:53did come to like, but not in this story.
- 9:57But I think this is pretty good. Actually, you know, and I think
- 10:00this age H is a lot better than some of the Christmas specials.
- 10:07I'd say, sorry, I think, I think on on, on first broadcast, I
- 10:14mean, obviously the ending with River and the doctor where I
- 10:18think went down quite well, but you know, the early stuff with
- 10:22the kind of sort of panto. Farcical stuff at the beginning.
- 10:28Was it was a bit kind of oh it's just dr.
- 10:30Whooping really kind of camping. Silly, I think we can't deny
- 10:35that. It is no no.
- 10:38It would be wrong of us to deny that it's marvelous.
- 10:43But I think I've seen over the years.
- 10:46I've seen it creep up on people's favorite Christmas.
- 10:50Special, this quiet. Yeah, me too.
- 10:54Where does social rank? For you then in the the plethora
- 10:58of Christmas specials a plethora.
- 11:01I think we've got a whole season Christmas specials at this
- 11:04point. We're not sure.
- 11:07I'm not sure be my number one bury my, their fair, share the
- 11:11Christmas specials. I do need to re-watch.
- 11:13I was actually thinking putting on the runway broke the other
- 11:15day. I would say, I would say, I
- 11:20would put it in my top and the upper end of Christmas specials.
- 11:25Probably in the top five at least.
- 11:28So what off the top of my head, what else would I put there?
- 11:32I know, we're never gonna see head ahead.
- 11:34I 2i head-to-head on it. Eye-to-eye In A Christmas.
- 11:38Carol, A Christmas Carol? Yeah, I please, please.
- 11:44Please. Don't kill me.
- 11:47Christmas Invasion would probably be there.
- 11:49Yeah, as well. Last Christmas.
- 11:55Definitely your last Christmas, right?
- 11:57Probably both of snowmen. I do.
- 12:03I was thinking the Snowman. I do actually have a bit of a
- 12:05soft spot for the next Doctor actually.
- 12:08Oh, really yeah. So yeah, some bits of that.
- 12:12I've got a bit of a soft spot for voyage of the Damned.
- 12:16Yeah, I mean it's kind of irresistible.
- 12:19You got the Titanic in space and then I'll even are.
- 12:22Yeah, I'm Kylie. But what more on average
- 12:27nowadays, I think I am or towards the Muppet Christmas
- 12:31specials than the rusty. Davis ones are don't think I'd
- 12:35ever say that. What did I lose it?
- 12:41Every why do you think that? Oh well yeah for a split second
- 12:47I think Rusty Davis has like trappings of Christmas and just
- 12:52tells a story. Whereas I think Steven Moffat a
- 12:55she leans into the idea of a Christmas special and makes the
- 12:58Christmas elements part of the plot.
- 13:01So obviously A Christmas Carol is the Dickens story but told in
- 13:09a The Sci-Fi setting doctor the Widow and the Wardrobe is
- 13:12obviously telling The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe or
- 13:15elements of it like last Christmas has Father Christmas,
- 13:20That's essential character and fuck me to be managed to get
- 13:23away with that. I don't know quite how he
- 13:25managed it but he did. Yeah.
- 13:28I the the thing II think you get particularly around from time of
- 13:36the Capaldi Christmas specials Wow, is, I think certainly in
- 13:44Lost Christmas and husbands or there's a theme attic attempted
- 13:47a loose kind of thematic linked with the idea of a Last
- 13:49Christmas. I think he tries to get into
- 13:51that kind of that family, Melancholy, that can sometimes
- 13:53around Christmas of. You never know if this is maybe
- 13:56the last time you'll gather as a family for Christmas and then
- 13:59the next time someone is gone. And I think, you know, this
- 14:03whole idea of every Christmas is last Christmas which is Central
- 14:06to the love to last Christmas. Is actually named called right
- 14:11at the end of this episode. The husbands of river song, I
- 14:14think about the egg. She says, every Christmas is
- 14:17last Christmas. Yeah.
- 14:20Well, I mean it's because somebody who lost his mother in
- 14:25December like that has some resonance you know and well in
- 14:30Christmas Carol he has that line.
- 14:32Doesn't it halfway out of the dark?
- 14:33He's a waste trying to make some kind of impact or statement
- 14:37around Christmas. I don't know.
- 14:38I just feel like Like I just feel like he leans into the
- 14:41Christmas in a very common special, more than rushing over
- 14:45start something and obviously Chris chibnall ignored it.
- 14:47All together Christmas don't don't he don't occur in the
- 14:50ship. No era.
- 14:53Everybody's hung up over New Year's Day yeah fighting Daleks
- 14:58usually all about But yeah. Well, let's see that again.
- 15:08Get into it. We should probably get into it.
- 15:10Yes we might have a little bit of lagging because I've got a
- 15:12few internet issues today. I'm going to try and edit around
- 15:15it if I can but please please be patient with us.
- 15:19If if one of us sounds like we're going for a Time Warp, but
- 15:23listeners of the nine will be praised.
- 15:24This will not be an unusual experience especially the early
- 15:28days. When Jax had lucky was recording
- 15:31in the toilet was I actually I can't remember.
- 15:37It was it was entirely due to my technical ineptitude.
- 15:40That was all well, Jack look. I think it's funny if we say
- 15:44that a toilet, oh my god. I've got I've got something
- 15:47occurring now BBC iPlayer. Fortunately, a jack.
- 15:51I can edit around all of these bits, so don't worry, I'm
- 15:53getting quite good at this now, but we going when we go in icon,
- 15:57okay? All right.
- 16:01So, Jack, would you like to count us in?
- 16:04Absolutely ready to go in three, two, one.
- 16:10Yeah. Okay, this is a beautiful
- 16:14special effects shot. Isn't it a straight in?
- 16:17I know, immediately cracked by one of the silliest looking
- 16:21sources you'll ever get in Doctor Who why are you talking
- 16:23about it? So proper flow and salsa.
- 16:28I, well, you know, if you're going to go big, go big on
- 16:31Christmas day. Well, did I want this street
- 16:34that they make? Is this the Trap street from
- 16:36face the Raven? I'm pretty sure it is.
- 16:39It looks it's again, pretty narrow pretty low lighting.
- 16:45I think they've just added some snow and some Christmas lighting
- 16:48and that's about it. And so sort of Christmas fronts,
- 16:50you know, some shim Christmassy shops Did you see what is it
- 16:54there on? The Todd is Carol Singers like a
- 16:56crystal? Yeah, I really like the
- 17:01implication that that implies that there have been multiple
- 17:03Christmas. Carol has knocking on the door
- 17:06and Peter Capaldi just doing it. I don't know.
- 17:07I'm Malcolm Tucker at them. Just go.
- 17:09Fuck off. Go away.
- 17:11It's got a square. That's the same reindeer.
- 17:15Is that wolf had in turn left? You know.
- 17:19Yeah, but that but the Holograms I.
- 17:23So this is the first time we meet Matt Lucas.
- 17:27And, you know, I remember when they announced that Matt Lucas
- 17:30was coming back. Not, it wasn't quite announced
- 17:34as a companion, but as a recurring character and I do
- 17:38remember at the time, you were like, what on Earth are they
- 17:40doing that? Of all the characters of all the
- 17:43guest stars, they're getting this character back.
- 17:46Well, the thing was in The Runaway Bride?
- 17:49Okay, they take Donna Noble and journey.
- 17:51So, and she starts off as just like crazy Howard, and that, by
- 17:54the end of it, they've given her a bit, a new ones, and a bit of
- 17:56depth. And I can say, okay, yeah, you
- 17:58could make a companion out of this character.
- 18:00Well, they ain't doing that with Matt Lucas in this.
- 18:02I'll buy Not at all. And certainly when you get to
- 18:09series 10, the care if like there is a you could call it a
- 18:14recalibration of the character that if you know, not all has
- 18:18this kind of like goofy act that conceals an intelligence, but
- 18:23that is absolutely not how the characters being written here.
- 18:26The character in the husbands of River Song is 100% of Comedy
- 18:30stooge purpose in this, I still don't quite For these purposes,
- 18:35he just there to be a music, I think so.
- 18:40All right, I think he's kind of, well, in terms of his plot
- 18:43function, he's kind of their to mistake to kind of get the
- 18:46incident, the ball rolling because, you know, you have that
- 18:48thing where he gets the wrong doctor, we just had that bit.
- 18:52Whether the surgeon walks past go, are you in need of a
- 18:54surgeon? Which is a very, you know,
- 18:58farcical comedy writing beat that mop.
- 19:01That would be very familiar. With so he's here to kind of get
- 19:06the Miss out, misunderstanding in the plot going, but beyond
- 19:10that, not a whole lot other than standing around looking doing
- 19:13that Luca sounds which you know his father itself, okay?
- 19:17I've got to ask you about this straightaway.
- 19:19So what do you think about this whole River Song?
- 19:22Doesn't know who the 12th doctor is.
- 19:25So the 12th doctor is forced into the role of river songs,
- 19:29companion pretending that he doesn't know who she is.
- 19:33I mean to some to some extent. If you push it to my art, if you
- 19:38push it too hard, it all falls apart.
- 19:41They there is a certain logical Breaking Point with it, but it
- 19:48it it I think it gets away with it on two factors.
- 19:52Namely, that it does. Try to address Why Try it does
- 19:57try to present a plausible reason.
- 19:59Why River doesn't know who the Twelfth Doctor is.
- 20:02And also, And an old. But it's also coasting on the on
- 20:05the fact that it is just very fun.
- 20:08Seeing Peter Capaldi playing second.
- 20:10Figure out the second fiddle to Alex.
- 20:12Kingston is entire Christmas special with sold on the
- 20:16chemistry between Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston, which is
- 20:20palpable and you certainly prefer Alex Kingston here, then
- 20:26necessarily opposite Matt Smith. I think after sonnets lie before
- 20:30us the dead, this is my favorite River Song episode.
- 20:33Yeah, because it's not all about her being a mystery.
- 20:36It's not all about. She's not like a plot function
- 20:39in this. She is just a really Savvy,
- 20:43really smart, very funny character.
- 20:46That just so happens to have this glorious romance with the
- 20:5112 doctor. I mean, if you would have said
- 20:54to me, yeah, that after all of those, Matt Smith episodes with
- 21:00Alex, Kingston that Peter Capaldi would come in, and the
- 21:04most romantic seats between the doctor River would be the 12
- 21:08doctor. I laughed in your face.
- 21:11I think I think you didn't believe it did.
- 21:13It really, really works. Like when he saw her a minute
- 21:17ago, he's beaming from ear to ear.
- 21:20I mean it's a bit ghoulish when it Smiles, if I'm honest.
- 21:24Don't you think? I do remember, though?
- 21:34Certainly at the time, this was coming out because Rivers story
- 21:38had in a way been, I mean, it's always been catty.
- 21:40Capped off since it does begin at its end but the last time she
- 21:45had appeared in Doctor, Who was in the name of the doctor which
- 21:48was kind of an epilogue to a story for in where it was, It
- 21:53was kind of her day to ghost after the events of Silence in
- 21:57the library and it works as an ending for her.
- 22:01So there were I do remember there was some people going.
- 22:05I think I think you might have been one of those people at
- 22:07times. Like do we re case half of the
- 22:10house? Opened unhappily required.
- 22:12No, that was definitely me. And for every time River Song,
- 22:14popped up again, I was like really we still doing this.
- 22:17Well boy, did I eat some Humble Pie by the time I got to the end
- 22:21of this episode. Aha, but it did.
- 22:26I do, remember you saying, at the time you weren't necessarily
- 22:29fan of all this kind of, this kind of mucking about at the
- 22:33beginning but you seem like you seem a bit more on board now a
- 22:36days. I think am I wrong?
- 22:39I think when they go onto the spaceship in the second half of
- 22:42the episode. Yeah.
- 22:43Pretty much from that point on this is that the episode is
- 22:47gold. It is brilliant lines.
- 22:50It's great plot inversions Has that special effects are great,
- 22:55but most importantly, that sinful relationship, like,
- 22:57although I always think Moffat hits when it comes to the
- 23:00relationship staff and when it comes to sentiment, but he Taps
- 23:04into something, very, very moving in this episode and I
- 23:08think the second half of this is really great.
- 23:09Yeah. The first off, it is very fast
- 23:11acylase a bit shouty. Although I realize shouty
- 23:14comedy, you got Greg Davis stomping about being very shouty
- 23:18and I just don't find that very funny.
- 23:20It's not wrong with me. Yeah.
- 23:22No, not necessarily. It is definitely a taste thing.
- 23:28And, you know, sometimes shouting comedy can be
- 23:32delightful and hysterical and Peter Capaldi, you know, got
- 23:36earned his comedy, you know, a claim on one of the shouty is
- 23:41Combi characters ever committed to British television but it's
- 23:46it's all in the Precision. It's all in the in the in the
- 23:49detail of the brush Strokes. Whereas you know, so stuff like
- 23:52this is he's very broad. So delightful, oh, after three
- 23:58incredibly heavy episodes face the Raven heaven-sent and he'll
- 24:03been where, you know, he's angry and I bit psychotic by the end
- 24:07of that season. It's so nice to see him having
- 24:11fun. Yeah, because that um, that tail
- 24:15end of series 9 is, and I mean, this for the character is quite
- 24:21publishing. Yeah, but I can also, but
- 24:24certainly by the time you get to hell-bent, there are some people
- 24:27who are like know, this genuinely is quite punish you
- 24:30can watch, I'll tell you what the it's worth going through.
- 24:38I think going through is really fun and I know you're going to
- 24:40celebrate the bit where he goes, into the told are so brilliant.
- 24:43Conan. So that the artist for the first
- 24:45time if it is worth, going through all of this sort of, she
- 24:49doesn't know who he is for the moment when she does realize who
- 24:53he is. And that I'm tired.
- 24:55That is one of the best moments in the entire Steven, Moffat era
- 24:59definitely. It's what it what makes
- 25:01everything work. But I was actually going to ask
- 25:06are you do you actually like Greg Davis in this episode?
- 25:10Not really? No, not really.
- 25:13Ali. I just don't think there's much
- 25:15character there. So I really get the character.
- 25:18He's just he's basically like the graph into K.
- 25:20Isn't he from repulsed? Pretty much I know you're about
- 25:26to say the Quran Allah asked me like, like the graph indicate
- 25:31was very shouty and pompous and warlike and a bit useless as
- 25:37well. I mean, I caught this quick
- 25:38work, you know, you can take his head off from things like that.
- 25:40I've asked wife visually quirky, it is very funny to like see all
- 25:47the excuses. They tried to find to remove the
- 25:51head and then immediately Music. We put it on this in like they
- 25:58put him on a table they've come up with a very odd configuration
- 26:02in the Tardis that has never been seen before, and it just
- 26:05makes me laugh to think I'll do. The rest of Greg Davis, is
- 26:09incredibly enormous body is just being filtered through somewhere
- 26:13else and he's very funny. I've seen Greg Davis on Room 101
- 26:17and he's a really, really pretty bloke.
- 26:21Yeah, he is. He's very funny.
- 26:24But it's again, it's the it's the same thing you get with Matt
- 26:28Lucas here because Matt Lucas is giving a similarly broad
- 26:32performance. Not one you would necessarily
- 26:34think is a lot. There's a lot of substance or
- 26:36depth to and you know, given the chance that there's a lot more
- 26:43to that performer than meets the eye on first glance.
- 26:47Doctor, literally just said, I am the doctor there and she
- 26:50still didn't get it. I guess you a bit dense.
- 26:53Look, I Are we getting the ninja noises?
- 27:07It's all getting a bit, so it's all getting a bit silly.
- 27:10Now I ain't it is a bit. It is Oh yeah, here we go.
- 27:16Look taking his head off. That's quite quirky and fact
- 27:18that he doesn't sound very fun. Things with hits in this.
- 27:21Well, that later on when that fellow is it unzips his head and
- 27:25takes out there? That's incredible.
- 27:29I will say when, when the what are they called?
- 27:34The the winter show or something like that?
- 27:37Yeah. I was kind of like I do remember
- 27:40when dr. Mysterio.
- 27:41Okay, more Hunters. Like we're bringing these guys
- 27:43back in the effect was Gray. When they tear the heavens fight
- 27:47ever anybody? I don't think anybody was gonna
- 27:51get bring them back. Next episode right now.
- 27:55Oh, I think you know I'm gonna say something bold about Peter
- 27:57Capaldi as I think this is the episode where he really sort of
- 28:03learned how to play every single facet of his doctor and he ate
- 28:08often, he can see him visibly relaxing the first season I
- 28:12think he's a bit tense and a bit angry and he's playing that sort
- 28:15of doctor the second season, they kind of shift between it
- 28:20being a bit faster. Cool.
- 28:22And a bit sort of Dad. For a midlife crisis and then
- 28:27here, he's just like, no, I'm just playing the doctor and I
- 28:29think it happens here and it happens in doctor Mysterio as
- 28:33well. He's just very relaxed and his
- 28:35start kind of enjoying himself and then that takes us into
- 28:38series 10, where he's just got it.
- 28:42Whatever it is, he's got it distilled.
- 28:46Yeah. And it's a bit and it's a bit
- 28:48tricky because I there is still quite a broad conception of the
- 28:53of how Peter Capaldi's. We played and I think among more
- 28:56casual fans that he is quite nasty and unpleasant and not
- 29:02very likable which is mostly Siri.
- 29:10Because if you stick it out, he, you know, like in stuff like
- 29:12this where he's being asked to do like very kind of he veers
- 29:17between Melancholy and comedy and Broad comedy quite well.
- 29:23And so it's kind of one of those things where if you stick around
- 29:26you'll definitely get the goods with Capaldi.
- 29:28I maintained from the very beginning but I can understand
- 29:30why he's not everybody's cup of tea.
- 29:33Right. You know you know me I think his
- 29:36season 8 Persona is my favorite the asshole.
- 29:40Couple of days. I wonder why, but I do think I
- 29:44do think that's what Mary in the humor and the grumpiness that's
- 29:48serious 10, he gets it absolutely spot-on in episodes,
- 29:51like thin ice and things like that.
- 29:55I, I do think. You know, I do actually quite
- 30:01like Matt Smith and Alex Kingston together, but I do
- 30:05think there is something very different and they can, they do
- 30:11actually feel like a proper married couple here.
- 30:14Okay is literally lying in the snow laughing.
- 30:18His head of a ranting math head in a bag.
- 30:23I mean this delightful. Yeah and and you know, this is
- 30:27kind of the point where, you know, even the doctor has to
- 30:31stop and go her. Come on you.
- 30:34You have to understand what's going on here.
- 30:40And if you know, Martha does is a little cheeky here by going.
- 30:44Oh, you know, as far as Rivers concerned, Matt Smith was the
- 30:48last doctor because of how we've done the the doctor numbering
- 30:52where you know, she's counting John Hurt and the second you
- 30:58know David Tennant's regeneration.
- 30:59Stone was like there are no doctors after Matt Smith.
- 31:03There can't be, it can't happen. So that's why I do not
- 31:07acknowledge the existence of Peter Cobalt.
- 31:13That's a great reaction. Who is this hottie?
- 31:17That's just turned up. Are you say this every time?
- 31:21But I do know what I was like. Yeah, I agree.
- 31:23Who is this terribly handsome, man, he's very handsome.
- 31:26I thought. Sure.
- 31:27Is that, is that River song? Oh, no, that's her, like, a
- 31:29partner in crime, isn't it? Yeah, but they're also married
- 31:33as well. I think in a very like, isn't it
- 31:36in this ma 40. It's a really ma 40 thing where
- 31:38it's like, oh, we're married. But I erased your memory because
- 31:42I thought you were being annoying.
- 31:45My god, did you see that? Did you see that?
- 31:47All those photographs, of all the old doctors?
- 31:50Yeah, and it kind of cuts off but Matt Smith.
- 31:55Oh no. Did you see that?
- 31:56Is it codename Damsel in Distress?
- 31:58I'll swear, that's a reference. That is a reference to talk to
- 32:01her in distress. I swear, you're just looking for
- 32:06any old excuse people, I wouldn't put it past him jack, I
- 32:09wouldn't put it past. I wouldn't you think Russell
- 32:12would bring back doctor and no, no, he's got to, he's got a good
- 32:16sense of good. Head on his shoulders.
- 32:19That's what it that's expressed I was going for.
- 32:21See, this is where I think the file still gets a bit much.
- 32:23You got Matt Lucas sort of prostrate In front of this
- 32:26grunting robot. Yeah, really Shades Rim, really
- 32:30doing his best jowl acting here. But, remember the rusty Davis
- 32:34quote, where he said that the Christmastime Is Where It's
- 32:37gotta be at its most sort of broadly enjoyable for the whole
- 32:42family because this like for a lot of people, this will be the
- 32:46only episode they watch because they're watching on Christmas
- 32:49day. Well, what would make her this
- 32:51Matt Smith roaming after that. It's robots, who can And I
- 32:55thought like it. I don't like it.
- 32:57I like it. Don't worry.
- 33:01Don't worry the Buzz Lightyear. Things are going to pop out in a
- 33:05second. He's going to be a great, big
- 33:06toy. I mean did you watch this with
- 33:11your family? Is there a reason for that?
- 33:21I mean, not in particular. I think I was away our broadcast
- 33:27last. I can't remember.
- 33:28But I did watch it by myself. It's like Dad would probably
- 33:34like this. Mom would be going.
- 33:36Oh my God. What the hell?
- 33:37Are we watching? She well, you say that, I mean I
- 33:46did share our episode 1 of city of death and she's like, oh god,
- 33:49what the hell? Are you making me watch Jack?
- 33:51This is awful. Bless God.
- 33:53Jack, will you do me a favor? Will you do the impression
- 33:55appear Capaldi in a minute? When he goes inside the Tardis?
- 33:58Because I know you, I know you could do this.
- 34:00Well, okay. All right.
- 34:03Prepare yourself. Okay.
- 34:05Oh, yes, yes. Getting into character.
- 34:07I'm not Jacob dudman. I can't quite do the full kind
- 34:11of doctor, but I'll I'll give it a crack before they do go in.
- 34:16I'm gonna say the thing about new Doctor.
- 34:20Who is you could tell whereabouts in Peter Capaldi's
- 34:23era. You are because of the size of
- 34:26his before whore. It's true.
- 34:30It's true. Yeah.
- 34:33I mean like it was a joke. We will make you until you
- 34:38actually get to twice a put a tie with his hair is long.
- 34:41It's so perfectly. Absurdly long.
- 34:44Okay, are you ready for this? Here we go.
- 34:48Does he say finally it's my turn or something like yes.
- 34:51Finally here we go. oh, I Don't it's bigger on the inside than
- 35:09it is on the outside. It do I have to do the whole?
- 35:15Yeah, go home. But I tired to study of physical
- 35:18space has been transformed through the bunch and smoke to
- 35:25death by grass of the universal constant sense of physical.
- 35:30Reality has been changed. He's having so much.
- 35:35Fun is Ali? Yeah.
- 35:39But this is what makes the thing so great does.
- 35:41All this grandstanding and showing off and then River Song
- 35:44does this completely ridiculous thing.
- 35:46But that the doctor has never noticed in his own tardis, which
- 35:49is just pulling the Brandy case out.
- 35:51I like to think though that somewhere behind those roundels
- 35:53and every console we've had over all time.
- 35:56Is that Brandi cabinet? I know what?
- 36:01I think that that's a joke that's actually made in twice
- 36:03Upon a Time. Doesn't, will it David Bradley
- 36:06open? One of the roundels and that
- 36:08same Little Brandy is in there. Oh really?
- 36:12Oh, that's the point. I wanted to ask you about that.
- 36:15Well, because this isn't technically might have been the
- 36:17end of the Steven Moffat here at my there.
- 36:20That's right. I because I think Chris Chappell
- 36:25had been announced me the incoming show up.
- 36:27Yeah, I had he been announced at this point.
- 36:29Yeah. Before before this Mysterio?
- 36:32Yeah. We waited a couple of years
- 36:33because he what he was doing Broadchurch That's right.
- 36:37So I think he agreed. Yeah, that's right.
- 36:41He agreed to do series 10 because chibnall wouldn't be
- 36:45able to come on board for series 10.
- 36:49And yeah, he did briefly talk about leaving on the husbands of
- 36:55River Song, which is why Richie called Capaldi of only had two
- 36:59seasons are possibly. I think, from what I understand
- 37:05there was like, Jen Jen even after series 10 there was a
- 37:10brief period, where cut, you know, how tenant nearly like for
- 37:14a brief period nearly stayed on for Series 5.
- 37:17Yeah, I think there was a very brief time where Chris chibnall
- 37:21had a conversation with Peter. A pile of the about staying on
- 37:25and from all Iron from all, I know if Capaldi it said, yes, he
- 37:30would have they would have had him, but I think capacity was
- 37:34pretty set on leaving so it was never a serious conversation.
- 37:40So yeah, ensure their there is a possibility that, you know,
- 37:45Steven Moffat might have left on the husbands of River Song and
- 37:49you know, the following year series 10 episode 1 with Chris
- 37:52chibnall Capacity, which would have been something I'm going to
- 37:55say, well, I wouldn't want to lose series 10 for anything
- 37:58because I think that thinner ice extremist oxygen wild enough
- 38:04time of the doctor falls, are some of the best of the year.
- 38:07I would want to lose theories tank.
- 38:08I do think it is pretty strong, but I would say, I think the
- 38:13latter half of this episode would have been a better out
- 38:17than twice Upon a Time. Oh, I definitely without a
- 38:22doubt. I mean here you like Even by
- 38:26some of my fat standards you can definitely tell twice upon a
- 38:30time is written kind of out of necessity.
- 38:34And after having said yes, after the three glasses of wine or
- 38:38something, because here, you know, more fat is clearly making
- 38:44an effort to kind of wrap up his entire approach to Doctor Who
- 38:48and some races. You know, he's tying up the
- 38:50river song Story which, you know, When he was announced, as
- 38:55showrunner was around the time that Silence of the library.
- 38:58And first of the Dead came out. Isn't that right?
- 39:02Yeah. So his entire tenure has, was
- 39:06kind of marked in theory, by the beginning of River Song and
- 39:10almost by the end of the River Song story.
- 39:15But, you know, he's also doing, you know, like, fastened and
- 39:20Broad comedy, which I are his Which is his trade.
- 39:26So I think he's trying to do everything he can in his
- 39:30wheelhouse before he goes in some respect, aside from the
- 39:33horror that actually put his name on the map if we're quiet.
- 39:37Yeah. Well, I said, Horror in this, do
- 39:40you think that's horrendous? I mean, there's a little bit of
- 39:43body horror, like the effects of the winter shawl tearing their
- 39:46own heads apart, is it's that kind of unpleasant, but nothing.
- 39:51Nothing. In the, in the vein of, you
- 39:54know, those early stories, you know, with the Clockwork man and
- 39:58the gas mask child Jewels. Yeah, yeah, of course, you know,
- 40:05it, it does feel that last scene in front of the towers, it does
- 40:09feel like the end of an era, doesn't it?
- 40:10Like I know it is the end of an era because it's the end of
- 40:13river storyline, but it doesn't I think it really feels like
- 40:17it's just perfect. It would have been a perfect way
- 40:19to end it. And yeah, I don't think twice
- 40:21upon a time is entirely without Merit.
- 40:22Mary, I think there's some good stuff in there but you're right
- 40:24it is a bit of a nothing episode because like you say it was
- 40:28conjured up in a bit of desperation.
- 40:33Yeah, I mean price Upon a Time basically exists out of Goodwill
- 40:38and Desperation. I just say that we're going on
- 40:42to this spaceship now. Yeah, which is obviously filmed
- 40:44in some absolutely glorious house somewhere.
- 40:50It's stylish as fuck, isn't it? Yeah, this is where we're
- 40:54getting a little bit of a little bit of Voyage of the Damned
- 40:58again, but as yeah, I think you're 100% right.
- 41:02As soon as we get to the screws line at the criminal Cruise
- 41:05liner in space, it's almost like kind of the tone coheres,
- 41:09doesn't it all? Just perfect me.
- 41:13Yeah, I mean, I think the style helps a lot because you know,
- 41:17you suddenly you've got everybody looking Dapper and
- 41:19impressive in suits and the gear shift, definitely.
- 41:24But you know, we're also actually getting perhaps for the
- 41:27first time to the actual substance of the episode as
- 41:30well. You know, we're about to go into
- 41:33that scene where the doctor and River, you know, the doctor
- 41:37spots the diary and the Diaries almost full and he realizes.
- 41:42And there's Like really great line about how the man who gave
- 41:45me the story which is this is the kind of man, who would know
- 41:47exactly how many pages you would need to fill a diary with so.
- 41:52So it's it actually become was about.
- 41:57It actually follows through on the dramatic potential of what
- 42:00if River doesn't know that the doctor is standing right next to
- 42:04her, where is in the first half of the episode, it's all kind of
- 42:08broadened fun, whereas the second half from them arriving
- 42:12on the spaceship, onwards actually becomes about.
- 42:16What is she willing? What is she willing to let slip
- 42:20about the doctor and her impression and her character her
- 42:24characterization of the man? She's married to To him not
- 42:29knowing that it's him. I could have said that in a much
- 42:31more. No, I seriously but I also think
- 42:33is why it pays off. There's stunning idea that in
- 42:37the science Library, first of dead, the first time that he
- 42:41means her is the moment where she dies.
- 42:44So that's the end of their story and that, that poignant idea of
- 42:49one last adventure, and then you have to go off to your death and
- 42:53that, yes, at that has an inherent pointers.
- 42:56Singing it doesn't it? Yeah.
- 42:59And there is if you're if you're paying very, very close
- 43:04attention. You should you do pick up on
- 43:07that a little bit at the beginning because it's that
- 43:09first interaction, you know, River does say nardole what have
- 43:13you brought to my doorstep? At the doctor says, I've had a
- 43:18haircut. This is my best suit, which is
- 43:21exactly what river says, in the forest of the Dead.
- 43:24You turned up on my doorstep within you haircut and a soup.
- 43:27Yeah. And the new screwdriver and he
- 43:29has because she doesn't think that screwdriver before.
- 43:31Oh doesn't he get the screwdriver in this?
- 43:34He does. He gives us the screwdriver
- 43:36which had Which if you were so inclined to be bothered by such
- 43:41things was a was a loose end, which is where does where does
- 43:45River get the screwdriver? And it's not something that
- 43:47really needs to be resolved, but it's good that it is this, this
- 43:52whole sequence here reminds me of deep breath and that long
- 43:55sequence between the doctor and Clara and the restaurant and a
- 43:58similar thing happens, isn't it in deep breath?
- 44:00It's all Clockwork people. And in this are they all those
- 44:05creatures those? Yeah.
- 44:07Yeah, they're all they booked out the entire dining car and it
- 44:11does that wonderful Mafia anything of when you suddenly
- 44:13catch up and you realize they're surrounded, you know.
- 44:18Yeah, I'm trying to work out if there are any clues in the
- 44:22background but no, they've all got their faces away.
- 44:25So I don't think you can actually tell, but I think
- 44:27Steven Moffat does those reversals really well.
- 44:29So this plays out like a funny character seen at a dinner table
- 44:34and then you suddenly realize they're in a trap and I can't
- 44:37figure anything. Nothing more for me than that.
- 44:40Indeed his that scene. I was talking about and I think,
- 44:46yeah, I think that's an Oscar Wilde quote when she says, I
- 44:51want you to always have something Sensational to read on
- 44:53the spaceship, I think. Oscar Wilde said, I don't think
- 44:57you said the spaceship bit. I think he just said that
- 45:00something or someone someone should always have something
- 45:03scandalous to read on a train. So, It's never been in a minute,
- 45:10I seem to remember, you know what, the fourth floor falls
- 45:12through? They've times that is it the
- 45:15Doctor Who's time dear, so the terrible disasters going to
- 45:18occur just when they need to escape, it's just, it's River.
- 45:21It's so good. It's wonderful.
- 45:24I've I do I got to ask since I know this cancer.
- 45:29Did this particular thing that Moffat does can sometimes rub
- 45:32you very much the wrong way. So what do you think of the kind
- 45:38of implication that the, the suggestion, the story sets up in
- 45:44its first stop that River Song doesn't actually love the doctor
- 45:48at all. She's just taking taking him for
- 45:52a ride and using her him as as her help and she's actually kind
- 45:56of a nefarious character. Well, that's a very cute notion
- 46:00but I don't buy it for a second and it's because of everything
- 46:03we've seen so far and because of how she feels about him.
- 46:07Silence in the library in forests that a date.
- 46:09So all of asked me to set up to show that that's a complete lie.
- 46:13Aha. So you don't think it really has
- 46:15much dramatic like serious dramatic weight to it.
- 46:20No, but I think I think like, in terms of oh my word look at
- 46:23impeding that head always about to do it.
- 46:26Here we go. You know what makes it do?
- 46:28Not makes it super gross is that there's all that Gunk inside as
- 46:31well as out there. No.
- 46:33Oh, that's horrible. And the camera.
- 46:37The cameras behind his head, it reveals Peter Capaldi, as it
- 46:40tears over, and it's a great line as well.
- 46:46You probably shouldn't do that in a restaurant.
- 46:50Look at all the go on here. Oh, come on.
- 46:54It's such a good effect. There is it?
- 46:55Isn't that clever? I know, I know, I sometimes
- 46:58Doctor Who really gets it, right?
- 47:00Yeah. You know, I know Peter Capaldi
- 47:02has been a little bit disingenuous about the special
- 47:06effects of Doctor Who He says he left and probably so because
- 47:09he's been in these big blockbuster movies since then,
- 47:11but like things like that, remember, the filler made are
- 47:14snakes in the Magician's Apprentice.
- 47:17Oh yes, yes, yes. That's right, I things like I
- 47:20really think her effective. It's the it's the great thing
- 47:25about Doctor. Who the great kind of spin the
- 47:28wheel. There are some things you know,
- 47:31that look, you know, I rewatched partners in crime earlier today
- 47:35and some of, you know, some of those effects shots are great
- 47:39and some of those effects shots have aged terribly, but it's
- 47:44all, but when doctor who gets a running, it's so good.
- 47:47And this is Doctor Who still like, what are we ever going to
- 47:49judge this on his special effects.
- 47:51Oh, We might now it's got 6 million per episode.
- 47:56Ah, long live, long live Russell T, Davies long.
- 47:59Long live the god-king. So what's the idea here in am I
- 48:03right? She's timed.
- 48:05The something going into the ship so they can get out of this
- 48:08trap. Yes.
- 48:10So the whole, it's all in that great line, where she's like
- 48:15where they ask, you know, how could you possibly know this?
- 48:18I'm an archaeologist from the future.
- 48:21I dug you up. Oh yeah it's a great look.
- 48:25Yeah so clear. It's clear what it is.
- 48:28It's a variation of you know Captain Jack's plan in the
- 48:35doctor dances. Do you remember point?
- 48:37He talks about volcano and how he has a heist time.
- 48:40For volcano day. Yeah, it's basically that kind
- 48:45of in real time where, you know, she he's River songs found out
- 48:51about a famous catastrophe and has time to her criminal Heist
- 48:55to coincide with that historical disaster.
- 49:00I've got to say right and I would say it's very often, so
- 49:03enjoy the moment, yeah, but when Moth is, are often trying to be
- 49:08very very clever. Yeah.
- 49:10And sometimes the overstretched himself and sometimes it all
- 49:13gets a bit smug in a bit silly. And but boy, oh boy, man, when
- 49:17it seems like this, when it all Co, he is like narratively with
- 49:22the lines with their performances.
- 49:24Ma there's nothing finer as a in Doctor Who no is 100%
- 49:29experience. And even in stuff like this,
- 49:32this bit here which is pure farce II think Actually lands
- 49:37quite well because the setup has been is actually quite good in
- 49:43terms of why they cut open the bat, I can then try to fight any
- 49:47possible excuse not to open the bag like it's the reason the
- 49:51logic and reasons are compelling so it's actually really funny to
- 49:55watch Peter Capaldi's squirm as they open up to find the severed
- 50:00head of great, your God. Like all stand idly by and let
- 50:08this continue. It's like being called you say
- 50:12this is just too absurd now. All right let's get silly with
- 50:17could have been silly but like I was I did a commentary recently
- 50:20on the empty child in the doctor dances obviously that was his
- 50:22first stabber, Doctor Who and the bit at the end where she
- 50:26reveals that she is his mummy and the answer to this.
- 50:30Bloody thing has been staring you in the face for the entire.
- 50:33Like I just think we're muffins on it.
- 50:36Eyes. Just gold?
- 50:38Yeah. Yeah.
- 50:39That's me. I know, I know I'm not used to
- 50:46getting such such words out of you, so easily, you go.
- 50:52It really is a Christmas miracle.
- 50:57Shallow. God bless us, everyone.
- 51:24And it doesn't have any eyebrows.
- 51:30You can practically see him, flicking them up.
- 51:34It's really Charming. Both falling is Moustache, one
- 51:37of the other. Yeah.
- 51:38Yeah. I actually, you know what for,
- 51:43for a comedy performance that, you know, what is, is a bit too
- 51:47much? I do love that.
- 51:49They actually just shoot hydroflax in his own face.
- 51:52It does. It's a bit like the graph
- 51:55indicate getting bummed to death by himself, in it.
- 51:57Indeed, indeed, and Greg Davis pulls what I think is possibly
- 52:03one of the single stupidest Expressions ever committed to
- 52:07film, it is one of the dumb This looks Amanda's of apples on the
- 52:12show. It wouldn't be out of place in a
- 52:14car soon with it is funny. No, there's the crystal.
- 52:26There's the diamond. So what's that diamond again?
- 52:32The I'm trying to do what's called the someone who's been
- 52:37listening to the commentary will probably know right in what's
- 52:41the diamond called but what's it all about?
- 52:43Is it just very expensive? Yes it is.
- 52:48It's a prize diamond from from a people that hydroflax conquered
- 52:54and River song has been hired to steal it back from from
- 53:00hydroflax which is why she pretends to be his husband.
- 53:05I can try wowzers. Did you see that the camera
- 53:08going through the top of the spaceship, right, down into the
- 53:11ballroom there? Yeah, it's Paul.
- 53:15Here is Paul McKibben. I did, he do any other so he did
- 53:20to do. No no no.
- 53:24It's yeah, he did. Um it's um he did a cold war and
- 53:29the sontaran stratagem and the poison Sky.
- 53:33Oh yes! Him of course, we did listen as
- 53:35well, didn't he? He did, he did listen in Time
- 53:38Heist as well. He's come a long way since those
- 53:40early days of sometimes, stratagem and poisonous guy
- 53:44which I do lie. But I think there is a bit of
- 53:46awkward Direction in him. By the time he gets to listen,
- 53:49man. Oh man, there's some atmosphere.
- 53:52Yeah, and he's and he's done well for himself.
- 53:54Be on the show. He did.
- 53:58He directed I think off the back of his doctor who work.
- 54:01He directed the TV adaptation of good omen.
- 54:05Of course he did. Yeah.
- 54:07That was a massive Endeavor. It was, it was a lot of money
- 54:11went into that. And he also did an episode of
- 54:15Sherlock immediately. I think actually was it.
- 54:18Yeah, that would have been around the time of the husbands
- 54:20of result. He directed A Sort of shallow
- 54:22because well was that one of the goodies?
- 54:26It really divided opinion. It's the it was the one that was
- 54:31set in when they kind of went back to Victorian London.
- 54:34But it also wasn't really set in Victorian London and it was kind
- 54:37of Gators and Moffat trying to be a bit too clever for their
- 54:41own good. But it's very, it's very stylish
- 54:44to look at and I think they got Rachel to Lele for the the
- 54:48series afterwards. So there you know, there was a
- 54:51little bit of Sherlock pinching from Doctor.
- 54:56Who why wouldn't you do? Why wouldn't you like, you've
- 55:01got? If I mean, the new in the new
- 55:05Rusty Davis, Sarah. He's got Rachel talalay and I
- 55:09think they just announced one of the chip will directors as well.
- 55:12So he's cherry picking the best of the directors that have been
- 55:18But you're a lot of these of Doctor Who modern doctor whose
- 55:21directors do go on to do some pretty big stuff following this
- 55:26like, do you remember Toby Haynes?
- 55:28Who directed The pandorica? Opens?
- 55:31The Big Bang. We he didn't easily.
- 55:33Well, yeah he did. He did a stretch of the the
- 55:37Smith era where he did pandorica, opens Big, Bang
- 55:41Christmas Carol and then the Series 6 opener and he you know,
- 55:46he went on to Rex a big chunk of the Star Wars show and or oh,
- 55:52wow okay yes and similarly what's his name?
- 55:56He I think he directed a few episodes of the chip malaria and
- 55:59a of Mars are Wayne Wayne Wayne Wayne year we did resolution,
- 56:04didn't he? Yeah, he did.
- 56:06He went on to direct I think a couple of episodes of Lord of
- 56:10the Rings. The rings of power.
- 56:12Wow. Which, you know that although I
- 56:15think because doctors got a fair budget, hasn't got a Massive
- 56:18budget compared to handle and that Lord of the Rings show.
- 56:20I think, if you can prove your worth on a show with a kind of a
- 56:24smaller budget, people probably will go.
- 56:26Well, what can I do you for a lot of money?
- 56:30Exactly? Like it's that thing where of
- 56:32such limited resources but of, in terms of the storytelling a
- 56:37conviction in the genre, it's of the same scale.
- 56:41Also we've just completely not talked about the wonderful
- 56:44scene. We have just got here of river
- 56:47really Rising, who the doctor is, you know what?
- 56:49The bit where I hate the hello sweetie live.
- 56:53But in this episode when he says it, I'm almost like I can
- 56:57forgive any hello. So easy for that, which is just
- 57:01beautiful. Yeah.
- 57:04And it's so genuine and so sincere and of course, you know,
- 57:08a moment later they, you know, they're teasing each other and
- 57:12but you never howling. Matt Smith could be quite
- 57:14vicious with her, couldn't. He could be quite rude and, you
- 57:19know, a bit nasty with her in flesh and stone in The Angels.
- 57:23Take Manhattan, we've talked about that before, you know,
- 57:26where he's quite enough as Capaldi's really gentle with her
- 57:30in a way that I just didn't expect.
- 57:33Yeah, I remember more fat saying that Russell love the idea of
- 57:41Kingston and Capelli together and in fact, in look slightly
- 57:45odd phrasing but apparently Russell wrote back going our
- 57:48capacity in Kingston together. It'll be a sex storm.
- 57:53I mean, it is, they are sis. They Sizzle on screen together,
- 57:58they do have great chemistry together.
- 58:01I don't know. They just look good in
- 58:03silhouette as well. There was a shot.
- 58:04Just there of the two of them like side profile.
- 58:09Yeah, and I do think one of the, one of the first publicity
- 58:13Stills released to them together Came From This Moment where
- 58:15they're hanging on through each other and they just look
- 58:19absolutely right together. They do genuinely feel like a
- 58:23couple in a screwball comedy. Well, that's the thing as well,
- 58:27and what you need because my wife is always right in these
- 58:30sort of Comedy. Duo's, aren't they?
- 58:32These romantic comedy Duo's sniping age, ever?
- 58:36What you need is to bloody good. Good actors.
- 58:39And that's what you've got here. Hmm.
- 58:43Like I often say that, I think Capaldi is a lot better than
- 58:46half the material, we're going Doctor, Who, like, I feel as if
- 58:49he was a bit under sold half the time half the time, they gave
- 58:52him really strong stuff to do. And absolutely, he was amazingly
- 58:56good. But I think all of these things
- 59:00between him and Kingston from now on, oh man, I'm not well
- 59:04Howard's together at the climax, you know, I don't worry, we've
- 59:08still got some stupid stuff to get through.
- 59:10First also You know that singing Towers.
- 59:14That's one of my favorite ever. Roam.
- 59:16Murray, gold pieces of music. You know.
- 59:18That woman singing. I know.
- 59:20Yeah, yeah. Didn't you say you used to
- 59:22listen to it at the gym? No, I would listen to it when I
- 59:25was meditating sometimes. Ah, that was it because really
- 59:30it's so beautiful. Honestly, I've always, I've
- 59:35always been a big fan of how they get rid of the hydroflax
- 59:38body. They just overwhelmed with how
- 59:40confusing the stock. It is.
- 59:44That's how Captain Kirk would do it, you know?
- 59:47Yeah. Oh is it?
- 59:48I mean, I barely know anything about Star Trek.
- 59:50So I'll take your word for who was talking Mac, computers to
- 59:53death left, right and Center. It's a it's a hard skill.
- 59:59What are you got it, Jack. I think I can't believe about
- 1:00:03the say this. I think I could have I could
- 1:00:06have done with if this had been a year earlier.
- 1:00:09Yeah they're done last Christmas husband's River song.
- 1:00:12Oh no. How's my real son?
- 1:00:13Would have been the end of the season still.
- 1:00:15I could have had a whole season of Kingston and Capaldi.
- 1:00:18Oh wow. That's Are you getting it?
- 1:00:21Are you gonna keep that covered in the recording?
- 1:00:23So, you know, I think they re off instead of having that
- 1:00:27second year with Capaldi and Coleman.
- 1:00:31I think this could have rocks. And here you go.
- 1:00:35As soon as, as soon as you get to the, to really embed, this is
- 1:00:38where the episode changes gear again and get the real real
- 1:00:44substance of it. Yeah.
- 1:00:47And and, and It's again, more fat is very obsessive about
- 1:00:55continuity details at times and it's so blink and you'll miss
- 1:01:00it. But when they're talking, when
- 1:01:03she's talking about all the times, they previously canceled
- 1:01:07going to really again, she makes an offhand comment where she
- 1:01:11goes. Do you remember that time?
- 1:01:14There were two of you which is actually a reference to the
- 1:01:20First, the first time that Moffat actually wrote the doctor
- 1:01:23going to the singing Towers Adder ileum, which was in a mini
- 1:01:27episode 4, Series 6. I think it was last night.
- 1:01:31You're okay, no, no, no, no. I always watch him.
- 1:01:36There was a box that there was a mini mini River doctor episode
- 1:01:40on the series 6 box set, where, you know, some comedy mishaps
- 1:01:46happen but it does end with the Future Doctor arrived.
- 1:01:50Irving in the Tardis revealing that he's taking River to the
- 1:01:53singing towers of darillium and it's Matt Smith who's taking her
- 1:01:57taking him. So clearly modified is like I'm
- 1:02:02writing the singing towers of darillium story but I've already
- 1:02:05attempted to write that before. So I've got to somehow it's
- 1:02:08square. That off, continuity wise.
- 1:02:11So if you're insanely Fixated on those things, there's a little
- 1:02:18get out of, there's a little fix it.
- 1:02:20He's, he's all that obsessive, continuity all the way from
- 1:02:24metabolize free met a bit. Oh yeah, you know, he's doing
- 1:02:33this now, doesn't mean people or the people who loves away in the
- 1:02:37nick of time, he just tried it with river and then she believed
- 1:02:39herself back again because she's smart.
- 1:02:43Yeah. And this is This moment you get
- 1:02:46you see it is looking Capaldi's phase where he basically decides
- 1:02:49now is time and I, and it's an interesting thing, you kind of
- 1:02:54get with Capel these character. I think, as the doctor, whereas
- 1:02:57one of the things that define Matt Smith is that, you know,
- 1:03:01was how vigorously he avoided endings.
- 1:03:05The doctor doesn't like endings was a thing that came up quite a
- 1:03:08lot. Whereas here, you've got the 12
- 1:03:11doctor actively finishing the story he makes The choice to end
- 1:03:15it. Well, you kind of get.
- 1:03:17Yeah you hey, can eat it because it's also a 24-year.
- 1:03:21Yeah, 28 years. So it's a longer by is almost as
- 1:03:24long as Lord of the Rings. Return of the King General,
- 1:03:29though. You've got, you've got all these
- 1:03:30sort of clever, Mafia ideas here.
- 1:03:33So, the doctor he opens the door is day.
- 1:03:36A needs it to be the next day when the construction is about
- 1:03:42to start, doesn't it gives them the diamond?
- 1:03:44It says, why don't you build a restaurant which makes the
- 1:03:47restaurant, you know, so the docks of sort of creating the
- 1:03:51whole thing so he can say goodbye to River on this last
- 1:03:53one. All, you know, I always say I
- 1:03:55very like what enough is clever but these sort of cute little
- 1:03:59ideas one after another. I just think it would have been
- 1:04:03a nice way for him to out, actually this all of this.
- 1:04:08Definitely, and it, you know, when he gets it, right?
- 1:04:11It's one of the, it's one of the fun.
- 1:04:16Things that he does very well. Which and I know this as an
- 1:04:21example, and I know this isn't a story that you find quite
- 1:04:23frustrating. The Big Bang.
- 1:04:25One of the most fun bits of the Big Bang is when the doctors
- 1:04:28zipping back and forth, essentially having fun with the
- 1:04:30time travel and go are his third you know, his that can of soda
- 1:04:33or whatever it was. And so when when he's just using
- 1:04:37time travel in a clever way, essentially to be fun and funny.
- 1:04:41It's quite delightful. It's when it gets into more
- 1:04:43complicated, Megan out. Narrative shenanigans that they
- 1:04:47get to be Jesus, season-long arcs where suddenly You Pull It
- 1:04:51threads and none of it makes any sense or people have to be
- 1:04:54deliberately deceptive for other people to learn certain things
- 1:04:58and all that nonsense. But I'll tell you what, the one
- 1:05:01time when he gets it, right? For our just an entire episode.
- 1:05:04And it's all quite of a clever narrative quirks, like that is
- 1:05:07Day of the Doctor. It's just one after another and
- 1:05:10it just works every single time. Yeah.
- 1:05:14There's some, there's some good plotting in that one.
- 1:05:16Amazing. The best bit is where they're
- 1:05:19all stuck in that. And they do that a long sequence
- 1:05:22that all stuck in that sail together, I think, Laura just
- 1:05:24walks in and says, all the doors unlocked.
- 1:05:30Here we go. Jack the lighting, and the set
- 1:05:34dressing in this sequence. The special effects, the music.
- 1:05:40It's just all Supply but they get it.
- 1:05:42All right here. Yeah even with nardole have been
- 1:05:47quote unquote, me time. Yeah, it's red.
- 1:05:53It's still Steven Moffat. There's gotta be some awful sex
- 1:05:56gag in there somewhere. Yeah, I know.
- 1:05:58It's definitely varying into love and monsters.
- 1:06:03You know, we have a bit of a love life territory.
- 1:06:07She's sucking him off. Who knows?
- 1:06:10Oh, I don't know. Yes, and he would get capacity
- 1:06:17in his new suit as we, you know, properly tying things up again.
- 1:06:24Just all my God, this is so romantic.
- 1:06:26And, you know, me, I'm a massive romantic.
- 1:06:28If someone did this for me, man. Oh man, I'll do anything.
- 1:06:32And here's the that original Sonex future Sonic Screwdriver
- 1:06:36from series 4. One of the best toys you'll ever
- 1:06:38get. Do you think Moffitt has got an
- 1:06:41obsession with time things out like this?
- 1:06:45A little, I mean, you know, there are a lot of things he's
- 1:06:52perfectly happy to let it go. And then something like the Time
- 1:06:59of the Doctor, he's there are some things he's just like,
- 1:07:02yeah, okay, fine, that's done. We're not going to address that
- 1:07:05will wrap that up in like two seconds.
- 1:07:07Whereas here. He's actually taking the time to
- 1:07:11properly. Think through the Oh wait what?
- 1:07:14What is the best way to finish the story?
- 1:07:17Did you see that small flock of birds just they cgi'd in across
- 1:07:20those Towers there? Yeah it just gets everything the
- 1:07:25way this pans out across the planet with the woman singing.
- 1:07:29It's so beautiful. Good grief.
- 1:07:32I didn't think I was going to be this positive.
- 1:07:36Sorry. Hey Joe it's not too late for
- 1:07:40you to delete this commentary track to know though.
- 1:07:44I'm putting this one out. Oh I forgot to hit record.
- 1:07:51Oh no, I've got both. Don't worry.
- 1:07:55What surprises me is you just would not.
- 1:07:58Imagine, of course, he's an actor.
- 1:07:59Of course he can do it, but you just don't see Capaldi as like,
- 1:08:02a romantic lead. Do you really?
- 1:08:05No. No, he's a bit too, you know,
- 1:08:09even if a movie, my favorite personal, favorite film is the
- 1:08:12personal history of David Copperfield where he's quite
- 1:08:16delightful in that, but I still remember reading some reviews of
- 1:08:19him. He played mr.
- 1:08:20Micawber, in that, where they were saying, I remember one was
- 1:08:23like, Guys a bit too thin, and he's a bit too scary looking to
- 1:08:27be the corba. He should have been somewhat, he
- 1:08:30should have been the villain of the piece rather than you know,
- 1:08:32this kind of happy-go-lucky character.
- 1:08:35I think he does still get pigeonholed a little bit as
- 1:08:38scary nasty man. When actually he can, he can do
- 1:08:42that. Kind of romantic tenderness when
- 1:08:44the moment calls for it. Why?
- 1:08:46So, I mean, I have softened, his look a little bit here is hairs.
- 1:08:49A little softer is in a nice suit.
- 1:08:51There's so few slighting all around All of that.
- 1:08:54Yeah, he looks a hearse or longingly, you know, and he's a
- 1:08:59bit cheeky with her and then the bit in a minute where we cut
- 1:09:03away and they look at each other and they're going in for a
- 1:09:05snack. The way they look at each other.
- 1:09:07I mean I was going to be a hot night on that balcony.
- 1:09:09I'll tell you I but you know it also ties it up with Did you get
- 1:09:22a sense of the kind of Burden that the 12th doctor has been
- 1:09:24carrot? Like the kind of pain.
- 1:09:26He's been carrying since the end of series 9 and there's that
- 1:09:30lovely line coming up just now, when you say I, you know, you
- 1:09:36know, Happy Endings is, it's just a lie.
- 1:09:38And then River says, it just means time.
- 1:09:42That's gorgeous. So sweet and I want to take you
- 1:09:47back to 1995, pre the TV movie. Before Paul McGann shove
- 1:09:54Destiny, Ashbrook up against a tree and smoked the life out of
- 1:09:57her why she was picked chased and other whole of fandom.
- 1:10:00Imploded because doctor who kissed a girl?
- 1:10:03I mean if this thing had come out and the TV movie ending with
- 1:10:07a pair of him, staring into each other's eyes and this romantic
- 1:10:09setting going in for the kill. I mean can you imagine Imagine
- 1:10:13Ian, Levine wood and spontaneously combusted.
- 1:10:16Yeah, no. Broken heart into flames, it
- 1:10:19would have been deep breath put quickly in living.
- 1:10:22I It's so lovely. I once I don't have a single
- 1:10:32fact wanted to make And it's out and it's kind of in these
- 1:10:37moments where he gets things, right?
- 1:10:38Because you know, he kind of says you know nobody knows where
- 1:10:42the music comes from. It might be the distance between
- 1:10:45the towers and the Resonance of the sound but really it's magic.
- 1:10:50You know, it's magic that the the towers are able to sing and
- 1:10:53sometimes I know for you especially whenever sometimes
- 1:10:56we've offered goes, It's Magic. Just go with it.
- 1:10:59It can really get on your nerves but here it's just no here just
- 1:11:03what this is. It's like a Disney movie.
- 1:11:05This I mean it says and they lived happily ever after and
- 1:11:08then that all sort of vanishes into snow is just lovely and it.
- 1:11:13But but what you get is that, you know, it says they lived
- 1:11:17happily ever after, but it it it's little time.
- 1:11:21So the only word that remains is that, you know, it doesn't
- 1:11:25matter if they live together forever.
- 1:11:27What matters is that with the little time they had, they lived
- 1:11:30happily together, Which is a lovely sentiment.
- 1:11:35And I've always said, like, you know, I feel that the mafia is
- 1:11:37sort of overly sexualized, the doctor, but boy, oh boy, he can
- 1:11:42do the romance when he pulls back.
- 1:11:46Yeah, I loved it and I both lived happily happily.
- 1:11:51Yeah, with all the joy and Melancholy that implies, like,
- 1:11:54fuck me, Jack. You would have to have a horse
- 1:11:56tone, not to be moved by that. Don't you think?
- 1:12:00I would agree. I think it always gets me that
- 1:12:07ending. It's beautiful.
- 1:12:10It's beautifully done. It's a gent as I've sort of
- 1:12:12saying moment ago. It's a genuine.
- 1:12:15Instant of Magic on the of the show, kind of got going for the
- 1:12:19big, the biggest most romantic possible image, and idea and
- 1:12:26relationship. It can go for and it just
- 1:12:27getting away with it. Yeah, and from where the episode
- 1:12:32started and that sort of high farce, who would have ever
- 1:12:37predicted, that's where it would have ended.
- 1:12:40I think that was something you said in your original review,
- 1:12:42you are starting our God. I can't put up for this and by
- 1:12:44the end, you're like, oh my God, I cry.
- 1:12:46Yeah, I mean, I think it takes some confidence.
- 1:12:50It takes some balls to slip from that genre to that genre so
- 1:12:56effortlessly, yeah, as fantastic stuff.
- 1:13:00My God. I enjoy that even more.
- 1:13:02It's bumping up the list. Yeah, just I'm just doing, I'm
- 1:13:06just here to play my part just doing, just doing the doing the
- 1:13:09good work. Well, that you are now we have,
- 1:13:13you know, sort of wax lyrical a little bit about the husbands of
- 1:13:15river song. We have to give three reasons of
- 1:13:18Peace as to why we would suggest someone goes and watched it
- 1:13:22immediately start with you. Well, assuming you don't like
- 1:13:29people People being happy. And this this story definitely
- 1:13:35isn't for you. But from this fraud, If you love
- 1:13:41Peter Capaldi and if you, if you love Alex Kingston, then you
- 1:13:45have to see it there. They both give two of their best
- 1:13:49performances in the whole show and the chemistry they have
- 1:13:52together. And the cat their
- 1:13:53characterization, especially once the penny drops, and they
- 1:13:56realize who they who they are to each other, it's just gorgeous.
- 1:14:00And it's it's it's possibly the second-best River Song story.
- 1:14:07I would agree with that and it's it's one of the Loveliest and
- 1:14:12most gentle characterizations of a doctor who is quite spiky.
- 1:14:17If you if you've never really wore them to compel thee.
- 1:14:21See this story if you love elegant plotting which you knows
- 1:14:29Steven Moffat sometimes does well other times definitely
- 1:14:32doesn't stick The Landing. But if you like elegant plotting
- 1:14:35the way it wraps up, the River Song story is genuinely quite
- 1:14:42quite astounding and quite surprising.
- 1:14:45Will you just all you did all your three things in one go?
- 1:14:49Did I okay? Yeah, we're supposed to go back
- 1:14:51and forth, right. Fine now got to do free all in
- 1:14:54workout. I'm gonna say the production
- 1:14:56design on the spaceship, which I thought was particularly stylish
- 1:14:59and beautiful. I am going to say the direction
- 1:15:03in general, which I think is really striking throughout.
- 1:15:08It's just full of lots of pretty images throughout which I'm one
- 1:15:14of my favorite images is Peter, Capaldi, laughing in the snow.
- 1:15:17I shouldn't ask great. So simple, so lovely.
- 1:15:22And you know what? I'm going to say that bit of
- 1:15:24music at the end, which I think is one of marigolds fine.
- 1:15:27It's a lot of people that really you should.
- 1:15:29A lot of people were saying it was sort of running out of steam
- 1:15:31at this point and replaying the old cues and there was a bit of
- 1:15:33that going on but boy oh boy, he was the you know the musician on
- 1:15:39Doctor Who for 10 seasons for a reason and the end of this
- 1:15:43episode proves why? Absolutely stunning.
- 1:15:46Yeah I agree with With all of those points, you raised, that's
- 1:15:50fantastic. Look, Jack, I'm going to ask you
- 1:15:54the question now, then in terms of Hansel now, I mean, where are
- 1:15:59you? And I heading next.
- 1:16:00In 500 episodes time. I think you've asked me to do
- 1:16:10well did nothing. It was so annoying off of it,
- 1:16:17still exists, okay? Put our half of it.
- 1:16:20Then to be fair, it will be the smartest halfway All, I don't
- 1:16:26know. I think there's a decent chunk
- 1:16:28of me just going. Yeah, you're right.
- 1:16:31Yeah, you're right. Well, I've been quite annoying.
- 1:16:35What are the funniest moments of doing 91 is when I revealed to
- 1:16:39you? Because it was a fact that, you
- 1:16:41know, I can bust in and interrupt you quite a bit when
- 1:16:44you're trying to make a point, okay?
- 1:16:45And then eventually someone piped up with a comment on
- 1:16:48YouTube and said, look, will you let Jack say a point please?
- 1:16:51You know, he's the clever of the two of you will you please let
- 1:16:54him say something. And then we realized we could
- 1:16:56recall this on Zoomers. How will be a bit better as
- 1:16:59Zoom. Would favor.
- 1:17:00One voiceover the alpha when we both talked at the same time and
- 1:17:04it was always you. I don't think that's true.
- 1:17:13But you know what? This is your this is your
- 1:17:15podcast, your house, your rules. Now, we will be doing a redo of
- 1:17:20the wonderful time and the doctor dances, although I do
- 1:17:23think we should do another. Asik serious commentary, one day
- 1:17:26because we did two Classic series commentaries on what your
- 1:17:31to on 91, be praised with a pirate planet where we did
- 1:17:35individual episodes on our own. And right, we did the apotheosis
- 1:17:41of our podcasting experience, the, the commentary of the holes
- 1:17:45of now, I'm on itself. Was today was one of the most
- 1:17:50enjoyable was awesome. That's right.
- 1:17:54Oh, that was that was a part of me.
- 1:17:57That was kind of like that that you know, if we were ever to
- 1:18:01stop somewhere. That's our, that's our series
- 1:18:04finale, right there, but we kept going And we enjoyed and they
- 1:18:09endured, we will be back for the nylon.
- 1:18:13Be praised at some point next. Year, and Jack will be back for
- 1:18:19this podcast called again. Of all the times.
- 1:18:26Although the name will be praised of all the times to
- 1:18:28freeze. I said, no, I was trying to make
- 1:18:31a joke and say, what's this, bro, what is this podcast
- 1:18:33called? But never mind.
- 1:18:36We lost the moment. Do you want me to try again?
- 1:18:39Do you want to do that joke again?
- 1:18:40No, it's I don't worry, there's warts and all this one.
- 1:18:44No, it's quiet, but I would like to see what fits for say.
- 1:18:49Thank you very much for your time and that was next in July
- 1:18:53but We should see out this episode of House of a blunt
- 1:18:57penknife with our usual, gnomon be praised ending, given us how
- 1:19:01we started. What are we are?
- 1:19:04We are we doing one, two, three, then they will be praised or
- 1:19:07want to three a hamster with the blunt end?
- 1:19:09I the first one. Okay, yeah.
- 1:19:13All right, then let's let's do it.
- 1:19:16A3 A2 A1, then I won't be praised.
- 1:19:23It's like a bike. You never forget.
- 1:19:25Forget there.
