- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his Word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. We are beginning first Timothy
- 0:18chapter 2 today and we're going to be looking at verses one
- 0:23through 7 with some specific instructions on prayer.
- 0:29I don't know for you all what your prayer life looks like.
- 0:36I don't know if you have maybe a list of things that you pray
- 0:39over every day. If when you come to the Lord in
- 0:43prayer, you just bring what's on your heart or maybe what God
- 0:48brings to mind as you are praying.
- 0:50Lots of people pray in different ways and I love hear that in
- 0:56these verses we get a good small list of things that we need to
- 1:03be praying for and we are given the reason why we pray for and
- 1:08it's for a couple different reasons that we're going to look
- 1:11at about. I'm just super excited.
- 1:14This is a great portion of scripture.
- 1:16Frankly, it's a portion of Scripture that I need reminded
- 1:19of constantly. By way of review in First
- 1:26Timothy, this is a letter written from Paul to Timothy.
- 1:29Timothy is dealing with some false teachers there in the
- 1:33church at Ephesus that Paul had started, and these teachers had
- 1:39a lot of sinful and wrong things that they were teaching.
- 1:44They were teaching things contrary to the Word of God.
- 1:48They were teaching like speculative fables, myths,
- 1:53genealogies, all of these things instead of preaching Jesus and
- 1:59instead of preaching faithfulness to the Word of God.
- 2:02And so as Paul is instructing Timothy on what he needs to be
- 2:07looking out for, what he needs to be encouraging, what he needs
- 2:11to be discouraging, he brings in these verses in chapter 2 and
- 2:16verse #1 He says, first of all, then I urge that petitions,
- 2:23prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for
- 2:27everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so
- 2:31that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and
- 2:36dignity. This is good, and it pleases God
- 2:40our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the
- 2:44knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one
- 2:47Mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,
- 2:52who gave himself as a ransom for all a testimony at the proper
- 2:56time. For this I was appointed a
- 2:59herald, an apostle. I am telling the truth, I am not
- 3:02lying, and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
- 3:08So Paul begins in verses one through 4 by saying, here's what
- 3:14I want you to pray for. And he says even within verse #1
- 3:21this is not just an instruction for Timothy.
- 3:24This is an instruction for the Ephesian church.
- 3:28And we can extrapolate that to say this is an encouragement for
- 3:33our churches and for those that are believers all across the
- 3:38world. So what is Paul telling to pray
- 3:40for? He says I urge that petitions,
- 3:44prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for
- 3:50everyone. Now though the verse numberings
- 3:55stop there, that is not the end of the statement that Paul is
- 3:59actually making. He says I want these aspects of
- 4:04prayer. So here we have petitions.
- 4:06Those are things that we are specifically asking for on
- 4:10behalf of another hear prayers. This would be request that you
- 4:16are bringing from yourself both to the Lord and somewhat on the
- 4:23behalf of either others or yourself.
- 4:25So petitions, something I'm bringing, I'll put it this way,
- 4:32I can make a petition to the Lord for my wife Samantha that
- 4:38she would have a good day, that the kids would not get sick.
- 4:41That's a petition that I am praying for her.
- 4:45Then I can also be offering the Lord a prayer, something I am
- 4:50asking him that I would say, God, would you help me to be the
- 4:53husband that I need to be for Samantha.
- 4:57So I've made a petition on her behalf.
- 4:59I am praying personally here intercessions that I'm asking
- 5:03for God's intervention within Samantha's life.
- 5:07So not asking for a thing for her but I am praying to the Lord
- 5:11for her. God would you help her to have
- 5:13patience or would you help her to have joy today where I am
- 5:17interceding on her behalf and hear Thanksgivings God thank you
- 5:22for Samantha. So here, petitions asking for
- 5:26something that someone else is asking for prayer, something
- 5:29that I am asking the Lord for, for that person that there
- 5:32hasn't been that request made, but I am praying for them.
- 5:35Intercessions where I'm praying not for perhaps the person's
- 5:40circumstances or possessions, but I'm praying for the person
- 5:44themself. And Thanksgivings where I am
- 5:48grateful to God that this person exists or that they are a part
- 5:52of my life. So he says these things.
- 5:54Petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings
- 5:58be made for everyone. And then there's almost here.
- 6:02You could take this in one of two ways.
- 6:06One could assume that given the volatile nature of false
- 6:12teachers and what we would read all throughout the New
- 6:15Testament, that the false teachers did not particularly
- 6:18care for any authority figures within the church or within
- 6:23government. We would read about this in
- 6:26several other places in Scripture.
- 6:28The one that I'm thinking of offhand is in the book of Jude,
- 6:32where in the churches that Jude was writing to, you had people
- 6:37that were even snub and flippant against spiritual authorities
- 6:45and angels. And Jude instructs them to have
- 6:50a humility as they think about spiritual authorities.
- 6:55And here Paul could be saying, the false teachers there in your
- 7:00church at Ephesus, they do not appreciate or love or care for
- 7:06or pray for those that are in authority there in Ephesus or in
- 7:11the Roman Empire or in that particular region of the world.
- 7:15And so he could be saying, I do want you to pray for and to care
- 7:19for these people because God has a plan to use these individuals
- 7:25for the good of the gospel and for the good of Christ's
- 7:29Kingdom. But Paul could also be saying so
- 7:33that that's one interpretation that Paul could be saying, I
- 7:37don't want you to leave these people out of the everyone.
- 7:41Or he could be saying, I just want you blanket across the
- 7:47across the bow. What whatever the phrase would
- 7:48be there, he could be saying I want you to pray for those that
- 7:54you know, those that are in your life and especially for those
- 7:59that are kings or that are in any form of governmental
- 8:04authority. So whichever way you want to
- 8:07take it, everyone is included in any case.
- 8:11But he could be saying, I want you to take special attention to
- 8:17care for in prayer those that are leaders.
- 8:21So that's what he says that in verse #2 these petitions,
- 8:24prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for
- 8:26everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so
- 8:31that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and
- 8:37dignity. I do want to note here when it
- 8:41says for kings and for all who are in authority, both here and
- 8:46in Romans 13, I have at times seen people want to have an
- 8:52insistence on disrespecting and not caring for those in
- 9:02governmental authority. They would say, well, I live in
- 9:05America. And so, if you will, the
- 9:08Constitution is king. And that's that's what the Bible
- 9:13says is the king is the one who whatever they say goes.
- 9:16And so how does that work here in America?
- 9:18Well, that's the Constitution. And so whatever the Constitution
- 9:22says, like, yeah, I can, I can pray for the continuance of our
- 9:26following of that, but I don't have to like or pray or care
- 9:31for, you know, Obama or Bush or Biden or Trump or whoever will
- 9:36be after Trump. That is not what is being said
- 9:42here. You can even think in the world
- 9:46that Paul was writing to, they did not have as the ultimate
- 9:51ruler a king. They had an emperor, the Roman
- 9:55Emperor, and the kings would be much more similar to what we
- 9:58would have today, something like governors, those that were
- 10:03taking care of a particular subset of the Roman Empire.
- 10:09So you can think of King Herod, you can think of Pontius Pilate
- 10:13and others like that, that they were over a specific subset of
- 10:20of the empire, that they didn't have control of everything, but
- 10:23they had control of this section and the decisions that they made
- 10:28were important and impacted those that were living in a
- 10:33specific area. Here as Paul's writing to
- 10:36Timothy, he's saying there are kings, these rulers, those in
- 10:40authority that are making decisions that affect the
- 10:44believers. It it affects the cities that
- 10:48you guys are living in here in Ephesus.
- 10:51And he says, I want you to be praying for the individuals that
- 10:55make these choices. Now, Paul himself knew that
- 10:58these people did not always make the right decision.
- 11:01So you can look at times even when Ephesian believers, when
- 11:06Paul was pastoring there in Ephesus were beaten as a result
- 11:12of their faith in Jesus. And so Paul knew these
- 11:17individuals are not perfect and they do not always do what God
- 11:22would have them to do, that they sin.
- 11:25And we know obviously that God never leads or designs for
- 11:30anyone to do what is wrong. And so Paul says you want to fix
- 11:36some of what is wrong in your society.
- 11:39The answer is prayer. Now, it's not the only answer.
- 11:44Even as you look back at the book of Acts, you can see how
- 11:48Paul used his rights as a Roman citizen to affect good change.
- 11:53Sometimes he used his citizenship and the rights that
- 12:00he had during the 1st century as a Roman citizen in order to
- 12:05spread the gospel in order to allow for some freedom or safety
- 12:12for other believers, just number of things.
- 12:14So prayer isn't the only thing that we can do as we seek to
- 12:19better our society. But I would say foundationally,
- 12:22if we are not praying, then how can we expect for anything to
- 12:27become better? If we don't ask the King of
- 12:29Kings to if you will issue decrees and to make change
- 12:34happen, then how in the world can we expect that anything that
- 12:37we do on our own apart from from the blessing and work of God to
- 12:42make an impact and then he gives at the end of verse 2.
- 12:46What is the purpose of praying for these kings and those that
- 12:50are in authority. These would have been often,
- 12:53most often wicked and evil, vile people, and yet we are called to
- 12:59bring petitions to God on their behalf that we would pray for
- 13:03them, that we would intercede for them, and that we would pray
- 13:09thanking the Lord for them. Can I ask you, when was the last
- 13:13time that you prayed and thanked God for all?
- 13:17Use the names for those that are like here in Maryland.
- 13:20When was the last time that you prayed and thanked the Lord for
- 13:25Donald Trump or the last time that you thanked the Lord for
- 13:29Governor Westmore? That is a tough ask in today's
- 13:36day and age. Can I say that honestly, there
- 13:40are some of you that go, man, I could never thank the Lord for
- 13:46Donald Trump or anything that he's doing.
- 13:48And there's some of you that are like, listen, how dare you say
- 13:50that? I need to thank the Lord for
- 13:52anything that Wes Moore is doing or has done.
- 13:56It is not that they are right in every decision that they make.
- 14:01They might even be wrong the majority of the time.
- 14:06But do you have any love, any care, any appreciation for the
- 14:11fact that God knew what we during this particular time
- 14:15period, what we needed, and part of what He has given to us as
- 14:20believers for our sanctification is those that are in charge of
- 14:25us from a governmental aspect. I got to be real with you guys.
- 14:30I don't know how all of that works out.
- 14:33I don't know how all of that looks.
- 14:36And there's nothing more polarized right now than
- 14:39politics. Back in these days, you didn't
- 14:42get a choice on who your king was or who your governor was.
- 14:46And so there was almost an aspect of you you had less to be
- 14:54the temptation could be you would have less to be thankful
- 14:56for, to be grateful for as regards that governmental
- 15:00person, because they could have 0 redeeming qualities and yet
- 15:07still be your leader. Nowadays here in America,
- 15:11someone at least has to have some form of redeeming qualities
- 15:16in order for the majority of people to vote them into office.
- 15:21And if you're like, well, I just have no idea what would convince
- 15:25someone to vote for the other person.
- 15:27That might be an indication that we are harboring such the
- 15:33hardness of heart that we can't see or imagine anything good in
- 15:40our leaders. Let's follow the instruction of
- 15:45the Lord given here from Paul to Timothy that we are going to
- 15:49pray together for our leaders. Let's pray for right words and
- 15:55right actions to be done. Let's pray for any evil designs
- 16:01that they would have, things that go against the word and
- 16:04will of God. Let's pray that all of those
- 16:07plans of theirs fail. This is a little bit of what we
- 16:12can see at the conclusion of the verse, He says.
- 16:14We're praying for them so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet
- 16:19life in all godliness and dignity.
- 16:24The goal of our prayer is that we would be able, through right
- 16:30decisions being made in government, we would be able to
- 16:34just lead a peaceful life following what the Lord has for
- 16:39us here with godliness and dignity.
- 16:41We would be able to be godly, respectable people who live in
- 16:47peace without fear of being assaulted by soldiers, by being
- 16:56the recipients of unjust laws. And probably also that we would
- 17:02not have to fear danger, that it wouldn't be a anarchy or a crime
- 17:07ridden area. And those are things that we can
- 17:10pray to the Lord for. That we would ask God that our
- 17:14leaders would find success in their mission, which is the
- 17:17punishment of evil doers and the praise of those that do good,
- 17:22that do well. We would read that even in
- 17:24Romans 13. That's when the government is at
- 17:26its best is when it punishes evil and when it when it praises
- 17:32and uplifts what is good. And so here Paul says, This is
- 17:37why we pray. We pray so that we can just
- 17:40peacefully live godly good lives.
- 17:45Verse #3 He says this is good and it pleases God our Savior,
- 17:50who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of
- 17:55the truth. When there is peace in a land,
- 17:59we as the church are able to more easily share our faith.
- 18:05I have friends that are missionaries in restricted
- 18:08access nations and for someone to come to faith in Christ often
- 18:13times is a little bit like signing your death warrant that
- 18:16you are much more likely to be killed or harmed, imprisoned or
- 18:21harassed as a result of the fact that you have chosen to become a
- 18:25Christian. Whereas here in the United
- 18:27States there is no difference for a person.
- 18:30They they have to fear nothing from their government in
- 18:35imprisonment or fines or any of that for being a Christian.
- 18:40And so we are afforded great privileges here.
- 18:43And so may we pray that that would continue, that when people
- 18:47turn to faith in Christ, they would be able to do so with
- 18:52freedom and they would be able to, with great joy and gladness,
- 18:59be able to say, all right, I can become a Christian and I don't
- 19:02have to fear as a result of it. I don't have to worry about, you
- 19:06know, what will happen to my kids if the government finds out
- 19:10that I'm a believer in Jesus. That's not something that we
- 19:13have to worry about. And so here the goal of our
- 19:16prayer, the goal of us praying for our elected officials, is so
- 19:20that we can live godly lives. And it pleases God our Savior,
- 19:24who wants everyone to be saved. And so may we pray as we pray
- 19:30for our elected officials, may we pray for their salvation,
- 19:33that they would come to know Jesus, that they would follow
- 19:36him with their lives, and then that we would pray that others
- 19:40would also come into that family.
- 19:43Then Paul gives this, if you will, poem this, this creed of
- 19:48belief, and he says, for there is one God and one mediator
- 19:52between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself
- 19:57as a ransom for all, a testimony at the proper time.
- 20:02Jesus is the one that purchased our salvation, and He's the only
- 20:06one that we need to go through in order to have a relationship
- 20:11with God. There is no church, there is no
- 20:14pastor, there is no Pope, there is no priest that you need in
- 20:20order to have a personal relationship and conversation
- 20:24with God. You do not have to have any
- 20:26other individual in order to have a relationship with God.
- 20:29This would run afoul of some of what would be claimed by the
- 20:34various religions of this time, which would say maybe you need a
- 20:38emperor or someone in order to communicate with the gods.
- 20:42Or you can think back to ancient Babylon or Egypt, where those
- 20:45rulers said that they were direct descendants of the gods
- 20:49and that there was a, if you will, they needed to you needed
- 20:53to talk to a ruler in order for you to have access to the gods.
- 21:01And here Paul says that's not the way it is.
- 21:04Instead, we have a ruler that we talked to that we get access to
- 21:10God through, but it's not in the other human than the man Christ
- 21:14Jesus, who is truly God of God and truly man.
- 21:19And what a what an incredible thing that that is.
- 21:23And I love that Jesus is called here the mediator between God
- 21:27and man. He's the one that comes to us on
- 21:30behalf of God, and he is the one that goes to God on behalf of
- 21:34us. And verse 6, he says he gave
- 21:37himself as a ransom for all that Jesus purchased us back, that we
- 21:43were, if you will, we were property of the world.
- 21:45We were property of Satan. And Jesus with his precious
- 21:48blood, he bought us back. And what a joy that that is,
- 21:53even as we would sing the song victory in Jesus, He sought me
- 21:56and he bought me with his redeeming blood.
- 22:00Then verse #7 Paul says, listen, this, this whole thing, this
- 22:05about living godly, leading other people to faith in Jesus
- 22:09because Jesus is the point of it all.
- 22:11He says, I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a
- 22:16teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth to declare this.
- 22:20He says, this is the reason that I do everything that I do is to
- 22:24tell people about Jesus for you. Are you praying for your elected
- 22:29officials? Are you thanking the Lord for
- 22:32the good things that they are doing?
- 22:35And then are you utilizing the freedom that you have in America
- 22:39to share your faith with other people?
- 22:42If not, don't. Don't assume that freedom for
- 22:47freedom's sake is what God has for you.
- 22:51Freedom, especially governmental freedom right now, until Jesus
- 22:55comes back, is to be utilized so that we would share our faith
- 22:59with others. Let's do that this week and
- 23:02let's pray and let's thank the Lord that Jesus is the only one
- 23:06that we need to go through in order to have that relationship
- 23:11with God and that Jesus made that path clear and open and
- 23:15free for all who will call on him.
- 23:19Thank you for tuning in today. Next episode is crazy.
- 23:24Like honestly I'm asking for you guys by the time that you watch
- 23:28this all already have recorded it.
- 23:29But deeply appreciate your prayers.
- 23:33It is a very difficult passage of Scripture, verses 8 through
- 23:3915 of First Timothy 2, and it has been misused by a lot of
- 23:44people. It's been ignored by a lot of
- 23:47people. And so I'm hoping that it will
- 23:49be a blessing and that it might provide some clarity for people.
- 23:54Thanks for tuning in. See you next episode.
