- 0:01Speaker 1: It's time to talk to Utah quarterback Devin Dampier. This
- 0:05Speaker 1: is Dishing with Devin on the Sean O'Connell Show. Brought
- 0:08Speaker 1: to you by Colligan Water, Salt Lake City, America First
- 0:11Speaker 1: Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Now here's
- 0:15Speaker 1: OC with Ute Star signal caller Devin Dampier on your
- 0:19Speaker 1: home of the Utes and your home for football. ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 0:25Speaker 2: All right, it is that time for Edition with Dev.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Our interview with quarterback number one at the University of
- 0:31Speaker 3: Utah brought to you by America First Credit Union, Culligan
- 0:35Speaker 3: Water of Salt Lake City, and Valley Plumbing, Heating, Cooling,
- 0:39Speaker 3: and Excavation.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Devin Dampier off the bye week. How are you, sir?
- 0:45Speaker 4: Good. We're back.
- 0:46Speaker 2: We're back. You got a fresh haircut?
- 0:49Speaker 4: Yeah, a whole new look after the birthday for sure.
- 0:53Speaker 2: And you turned 22 years old.
- 0:56Speaker 4: No doubt.
- 0:56Speaker 5: New life.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Does it really feel any different, though?
- 1:00Speaker 4: No.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Of course not, right?
- 1:01Speaker 5: This is like my first unsignificant birthday. Like every birthday
- 1:05Speaker 5: leading up to 21, you're like, I can't wait to
- 1:07Speaker 5: be 21.
- 1:07Speaker 3: It's a milestone until you get to 21. And now
- 1:10Speaker 3: the next one, Dev, is 30. And you don't feel
- 1:13Speaker 3: good about that. And then the next one after that
- 1:14Speaker 3: is 40. Your milestone birthdays from here on out are
- 1:17Speaker 3: kind of bad ones.
- 1:19Speaker 4: 24 is a milestone. Kobe. Okay. You got to have
- 1:23Speaker 4: your Jordan and Kobe year.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:26Speaker 3: I did not celebrate the Jordan or Kobe years. I
- 1:30Speaker 3: was not a basketball guy. What did you do for
- 1:32Speaker 3: the birthday?
- 1:36Speaker 5: Well, my girlfriend took me breakfast, dinner, presents, got chocolate-covered
- 1:43Speaker 5: strawberries with Spider-Man in Utah.
- 1:46Speaker 4: That's cool. But I also went to the UFC event,
- 1:51Speaker 4: which was sick.
- 1:52Speaker 5: I had four tickets, so I was able to bring
- 1:55Speaker 5: E-Day and Lance.
- 1:58Speaker 4: And it was fun. It was fun.
- 2:00Speaker 2: So I saw you there.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I was sitting like you were right behind where the
- 2:05Speaker 3: fighters walked into the cage.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:07Speaker 2: That's like for everyone.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Who's been or watched UFC fights, you know, there's that
- 2:11Speaker 3: like prep point where the officials check, make sure you're greased,
- 2:15Speaker 3: make sure you got your cup on, your mouthpiece in
- 2:17Speaker 3: and all that stuff.
- 2:18Speaker 2: So you were like right behind that.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 3: And right in front of you was actually the women's
- 2:22Speaker 3: world champion right now, Mackenzie Dern.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Did you get to meet her at all?
- 2:25Speaker 5: Um, we were able to say hi, but yeah, a
- 2:28Speaker 5: lot of like all of them were just walking in
- 2:30Speaker 5: front of us.
- 2:30Speaker 4: It was kind of crazy. We was like, we feel
- 2:33Speaker 4: like we're one of them.
- 2:34Speaker 3: So, so I'm watching, I'm watching the fights and we're
- 2:36Speaker 3: obviously looking at, as people are coming in and then like,
- 2:40Speaker 3: you know, I was like, wait a second. That looks
- 2:42Speaker 3: like Lance Coleslaw back there. And then I looked at,
- 2:45Speaker 3: I was like, oh, he's with Ethan day and there's dev.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I was like, all right. So those guys are here.
- 2:49Speaker 2: So is that your first UFC event?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. I've never. I've never been to one.
- 2:54Speaker 5: I mean, I've watched the YouTube videos of knockouts, and
- 2:58Speaker 5: I've played UFC on the game, but that was my
- 3:00Speaker 5: first time ever seeing it in person.
- 3:02Speaker 2: What was your takeaway?
- 3:03Speaker 3: People either love it or hate it, or where did
- 3:06Speaker 3: you fall leaving the event?
- 3:08Speaker 2: I liked it.
- 3:09Speaker 4: I enjoyed it, I think, more than the TV. Yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 4: It's pretty cool to really be there.
- 3:14Speaker 5: It's kind of like, I mean, I don't think it's
- 3:17Speaker 5: as electric as football, but just the standpoint of being
- 3:20Speaker 5: at a football game and watching it.
- 3:22Speaker 4: On TV, I think it is two different things. Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:25Speaker 2: The energy is different.
- 3:26Speaker 3: And Hey, I tell you what, we talked about this
- 3:29Speaker 3: on the show last week. It was kind of an
- 3:30Speaker 3: underwhelming sort of main event. Like that card, people were critical.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Myself included ended up with a bunch of first round knockouts,
- 3:38Speaker 3: ended up with a bunch of really great fights.
- 3:39Speaker 4: I wasn't too happy about it.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Why?
- 3:41Speaker 2: You didn't want the first round.
- 3:43Speaker 5: No, it wasn't even first round. It was like 30 seconds.
- 3:47Speaker 5: People were just getting gone. I'm like, bro, I at
- 3:50Speaker 5: least want to see a round go by. Like, At
- 3:53Speaker 5: least let me see some fighting.
- 3:54Speaker 1: All right.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Devin Dampier is backwards as a fight fan. Everyone else
- 3:58Speaker 3: wants that violence, that bloodlust. And you're like, no, give
- 4:02Speaker 3: me some.
- 4:02Speaker 5: Back and forth. I mean, just a little bit. I
- 4:06Speaker 5: feel like second round knockouts are the best. At least
- 4:08Speaker 5: you get a round of watching them. Not 30 seconds.
- 4:11Speaker 3: So on, what was it, Wednesday night, I went to
- 4:15Speaker 3: dinner with Anthony Wint and his coaches. One of his
- 4:19Speaker 3: coaches has become a good friend of mine. He's a
- 4:21Speaker 3: fighter in the PFL. one of our champions in Pukasunga.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Now he was the guy holding the camera when Anthony
- 4:27Speaker 3: went and came and, uh, talk to you guys, talk
- 4:29Speaker 3: to the team. So, so tell me how that came about. And,
- 4:32Speaker 3: you know, like coach Scali says, Hey, we're going to
- 4:35Speaker 3: have a UFC fighter. Come talk to you guys. What
- 4:37Speaker 3: was the reaction and how'd that go?
- 4:39Speaker 5: Yeah, no, he, um, I mean, we've been talking about
- 4:42Speaker 5: the UFC fighters. Everybody was kind of talking about it
- 4:44Speaker 5: and it was sick. Scali was able to get him
- 4:46Speaker 5: to come in and, uh, be able to talk to us. Um,
- 4:51Speaker 5: he definitely had more to him than I'd like.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Fighters have.
- 4:54Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 4:55Speaker 5: When you hear fighters, you just think they're all like,
- 4:58Speaker 5: I fight, I punch.
- 4:59Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 5:00Speaker 2: He wasn't like that. How are you going to say.
- 5:03Speaker 3: That to me?
- 5:05Speaker 2: You think we're all knuckleheads, idiots?
- 5:09Speaker 4: Sadly, that was my impression.
- 5:11Speaker 2: We've been doing this for two years now.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Well, see, you're out of there now. You know what
- 5:16Speaker 4: I'm saying? You got to see life outside of wrestling.
- 5:20Speaker 3: So Anthony went, for the people who went to the
- 5:22Speaker 3: fight or didn't, or maybe watched it on TV.
- 5:25Speaker 2: He got his cup of coffee in the NFL.
- 5:27Speaker 3: He's the all-time leading tackler in the history of Florida
- 5:30Speaker 3: international football. So mid-major football, linebacker. He's a crazy physical specimen.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Dude is muscle on muscle on muscle. Undefeated as a
- 5:41Speaker 3: heavyweight prospect right now. And yeah, he ended up going
- 5:44Speaker 3: up and talking to the team and he, I had
- 5:47Speaker 3: dinner with him after he had talked to the team
- 5:48Speaker 3: and that's the first time he's really had an opportunity
- 5:51Speaker 3: to do something like that.
- 5:52Speaker 2: He wants it to be more of a thing.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:54Speaker 3: And he was like, man, these, those guys are locked in.
- 5:57Speaker 3: That's an impressive football team. He was like, I didn't
- 6:00Speaker 3: know what to expect talking to those guys, but we
- 6:02Speaker 3: got them worked up. We got them a little bit
- 6:03Speaker 3: fired up and it was cool. So he had a
- 6:05Speaker 3: great experience. I hope you guys did too.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Yeah. It was good all around.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:09Speaker 5: It was sick to see him like kind of tackle
- 6:10Speaker 5: the dude. He tackled him before he started.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Punching on him.
- 6:14Speaker 5: It looked like he was playing linebacker. He literally ran up,
- 6:19Speaker 5: tackled him into the fence.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Dude dropped on the ground it was over it was
- 6:22Speaker 3: actually it was actually terrible um if you if you
- 6:26Speaker 3: go back and watch the fight it'll take you 20
- 6:28Speaker 3: seconds to watch the fight it lasted 15 it didn't
- 6:32Speaker 3: last at all and the guy that he was fighting
- 6:35Speaker 3: just made like he got hit certainly but he just
- 6:37Speaker 3: made an executive decision like i can't be in here
- 6:39Speaker 3: with this guy yeah even the announcers were dogging him
- 6:42Speaker 3: for it they were.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Like he was tall he was like 260 he was
- 6:45Speaker 5: like 30 pounds more than him i was like i
- 6:47Speaker 5: don't know how this is gonna go.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Yeah he's a Big old guy, and Anthony just mobbed him,
- 6:52Speaker 3: overwhelmed him, killed him.
- 6:54Speaker 2: I'm glad you were at the fights.
- 6:55Speaker 3: So this is my favorite question to ask Utes every year,
- 6:59Speaker 3: and sometimes I have an excuse to do it, and
- 7:01Speaker 3: sometimes I don't. Obviously, the UFC fight's being here, and
- 7:04Speaker 3: you guys have gone to them. If you have to
- 7:07Speaker 3: have one of your teammates, you've got to pick one
- 7:09Speaker 3: of your teammates to go in and win a fight.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Who are you picking? Who are you picking?
- 7:19Speaker 5: You know, you know, can I actually knows how to
- 7:21Speaker 5: fight for real?
- 7:22Speaker 2: Oh, does he?
- 7:23Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Can I actually, uh, he'd be.
- 7:26Speaker 5: Teaching me some food cause he's like, he's like the
- 7:29Speaker 5: fighter of the team probably.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Okay. Yeah.
- 7:30Speaker 5: So he'd be, he'd be teaching me a little bit.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Like he has a background or he just grew up
- 7:34Speaker 3: scrapping because that's how it is.
- 7:36Speaker 5: Um, I believe he, he actually did like a little
- 7:38Speaker 5: bit of boxing growing up.
- 7:40Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 5: He, I would think can I, can I would definitely
- 7:44Speaker 5: knock somebody out.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Okay. All right.
- 7:47Speaker 3: It's a, It's always great to know. Cause like, I mean,
- 7:50Speaker 3: I'm getting to ask you, I'll ask people after practice too.
- 7:52Speaker 3: I want to know if the answer is the same
- 7:54Speaker 3: from everybody. If there's a lot of different, cause it's been,
- 7:57Speaker 3: I've been doing it for years and sometimes I'm most
- 8:00Speaker 3: impressed when everybody on the team says the same dude.
- 8:02Speaker 3: I'm just like, all right, that's a bad man. Anyway,
- 8:06Speaker 3: we're not here to talk to Devin about the UFC fights.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Although it's like my two worlds overlapping for once.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Kind of cool.
- 8:15Speaker 3: We haven't, We haven't recapped the Iowa State game with you.
- 8:19Speaker 3: We had a bye week, so no addition with Dev.
- 8:24Speaker 3: 31-17 victory. First road game of the season. Clean performance
- 8:29Speaker 3: again for you. 18-27, 206 yards, two touchdowns. Seven for
- 8:35Speaker 3: 21 on the ground. Quality game. You guys, especially in
- 8:39Speaker 3: the first half, really dominated. They kind of roared back
- 8:42Speaker 3: a little bit, but you're going back 10 days or
- 8:45Speaker 3: so now. What was your takeaway from Iowa State?
- 8:50Speaker 5: I think our biggest takeaway was our first win on
- 8:53Speaker 5: the road. I guess that was the first time Iowa
- 8:57Speaker 5: was ever lost in their all-white uniforms. Oh, really?
- 9:00Speaker 4: It was packed out. Like, there was a lot of
- 9:03Speaker 4: people there.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Good atmosphere?
- 9:04Speaker 4: They were talking trash.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Yeah? Since the beginning of the game, we could hear
- 9:08Speaker 5: them chirping, like, the whole game until Wayshawn was able
- 9:13Speaker 5: to get up in there. That was kind of the...
- 9:15Speaker 5: That was kind of the deal breaker. Everybody started leaving. But, yeah,
- 9:20Speaker 5: I just thought, you know, we finally got battle tested
- 9:23Speaker 5: where I felt like our third quarter wasn't our best
- 9:25Speaker 5: team performance. And just the way we bounced back fourth quarter,
- 9:29Speaker 5: that was good for us to be able to go
- 9:31Speaker 5: through that and, you know, know we're capable.
- 9:33Speaker 2: You just mentioned Way Sean.
- 9:35Speaker 3: He had a monster day, 18 carries, 174 yards, two touchdowns.
- 9:40Speaker 3: He was also the leading receiver, five for 65 and
- 9:43Speaker 3: a touchdown loss. I mean, we've talked about him a
- 9:46Speaker 3: lot for good reason. He's a great player and he
- 9:49Speaker 3: continues to prove it. The game before this one was
- 9:53Speaker 3: a quieter statistical game for him at least. Did he
- 9:58Speaker 3: feel like, did you feel like, did, mac g feel
- 10:01Speaker 3: like all right we're gonna let way sean have a
- 10:02Speaker 3: day in iowa because last week was too quiet.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Yeah i think um.
- 10:09Speaker 5: I wouldn't say we put emphasis on it but i
- 10:11Speaker 5: think way sean definitely took it a little personal that
- 10:14Speaker 5: you know he didn't have the best that game he
- 10:17Speaker 5: didn't he didn't like Seeing that, he didn't like feeling that,
- 10:19Speaker 5: so I definitely think there was a little bit of extra.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Juice going into that game.
- 10:24Speaker 5: There was a lot of talk about Iowa State's running
- 10:26Speaker 5: back and how good he is as well. I think
- 10:31Speaker 5: away is one of those competitors. If it's running back
- 10:33Speaker 5: on running back, I'm going to show I'm the better
- 10:35Speaker 5: one when the time comes. I thought he played a
- 10:38Speaker 5: great game.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Aiden Flora, the Iowa State running back, ended up having
- 10:43Speaker 3: a monster game again against West Virginia.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Two touchdowns.
- 10:47Speaker 2: He threw touchdown. I've never, he counted for five total touchdowns.
- 10:51Speaker 3: At 22, 22 carries for 212 yards. So average the
- 10:58Speaker 3: same as way Sean did against Iowa state. That's 9.6
- 11:00Speaker 3: yards to carry three touchdowns in that game. And yeah,
- 11:03Speaker 3: they let him, they let him throw the ball a
- 11:05Speaker 3: little bit as well, which is pretty wild. Two for
- 11:08Speaker 3: two for 48 for two touchdowns.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Yeah. He had a game.
- 11:13Speaker 4: He was snapping.
- 11:13Speaker 2: It's an incredible game.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And the reason I bring that up is because you
- 11:18Speaker 3: go back to Aiden Flora, the same player against you guys,
- 11:23Speaker 3: and he had 13 carries for 54 yards.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Four yards a carry. It's like his lowest average.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Your defense did an incredible job of shutting down an
- 11:32Speaker 3: Iowa State run game that they really needed to get going.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure. I think that was a big emphasis
- 11:37Speaker 4: for us going into the week, too.
- 11:39Speaker 5: You know, their coach is all about We're able to
- 11:43Speaker 5: run the ball against anyone, and that was our mentality
- 11:46Speaker 5: going into the week. We started off doing nine-on-nines the
- 11:51Speaker 5: first two days of practice, just making sure that we're
- 11:55Speaker 5: able to fight in that box.
- 11:57Speaker 4: All right.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I almost don't want to mention this because I'm a
- 12:00Speaker 3: little superstitious and I don't want to curse anything, but
- 12:03Speaker 3: I'm knocking on wood here as I say it. You
- 12:06Speaker 3: guys have been taking care of the football very well.
- 12:09Speaker 3: You personally, the only interception was when you got hit
- 12:12Speaker 3: while you threw and threw the trajectory of the ball off.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Can you explain for me, can you articulate, is that
- 12:20Speaker 3: easier this year? Are you just better at it this year?
- 12:22Speaker 3: Are your receivers more open this year?
- 12:25Speaker 2: Tell me why it's translated the way it has through
- 12:28Speaker 2: these games.
- 12:30Speaker 5: Man, I just think another year of making high decisions.
- 12:34Speaker 5: I mean, I think I brought down my picks from
- 12:36Speaker 5: 12 my sophomore year to 5. my junior year and
- 12:40Speaker 5: then I just feel very comfortable back there. I feel
- 12:44Speaker 5: like I can operate the game. It's a little bit slower.
- 12:47Speaker 5: So I'm able to just be smarter with the ball almost.
- 12:52Speaker 5: And then, I mean, especially even our teammates, just them
- 12:56Speaker 5: receivers are catching the ball. No one's tipping the ball
- 12:59Speaker 5: up and it's getting picked. Everyone's taking care of the
- 13:02Speaker 5: ball when the ball's in their hands.
- 13:04Speaker 4: No one's fumbling.
- 13:04Speaker 5: So that's just a big shout out to Scali too. Just,
- 13:09Speaker 5: we definitely put emphasis in practice that we have ball
- 13:12Speaker 5: security drills and stuff like that.
- 13:14Speaker 3: So speaking of Scali, it's the first bye week under
- 13:19Speaker 3: Morgan Scali.
- 13:20Speaker 2: And, I mean, you can win a bye week or
- 13:23Speaker 2: you can lose a bye week. How did it go?
- 13:25Speaker 2: Was practice clean? Was it still physical?
- 13:28Speaker 3: How did he handle the bye week, especially for guys
- 13:31Speaker 3: like you who probably do need a little bit of
- 13:33Speaker 3: rest before you get into the home stretch of a season?
- 13:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I think Scali's very fair with us. His approach
- 13:40Speaker 5: was if we can be locked in during practice, we
- 13:43Speaker 5: won't do as much. And if we're not locked in
- 13:47Speaker 5: in practice, we'll do more. So that was kind of
- 13:49Speaker 5: the ultimatum that was set up there at the beginning
- 13:52Speaker 5: of the week. And I thought we had a very
- 13:54Speaker 5: good week. I thought we took advantage of it for sure.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Able to throw in wrinkles of plays, able to put
- 14:02Speaker 5: in new things and stuff like that. So just to
- 14:05Speaker 5: be keyed in on being able to try new things
- 14:08Speaker 5: just during the bye week. And I thought the offense
- 14:10Speaker 5: took full advantage of that, and so did the D.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Devin Dampier is our guest here.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Dishing with Dev is brought to you by America First
- 14:18Speaker 3: Credit Union, Culligan Water of Salt Lake City, and Valley Plumbing, Heating,
- 14:22Speaker 3: and Cooling, and Excavation. Look for the truck with the
- 14:25Speaker 3: duck to get your home improvement and repair needs done.
- 14:29Speaker 3: All right, so you're 4-0. A lot of us expected
- 14:34Speaker 3: this team to be 4-0 to this point. The bye
- 14:37Speaker 3: week goes well, and now you get into a slightly
- 14:42Speaker 3: tougher part of the season. Maybe not immediately, but some
- 14:46Speaker 3: big-time opponents coming up, and you've got to make sure
- 14:49Speaker 3: you're playing the right kind of football at the right time.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Kansas is no slouch, but a game that you all
- 14:54Speaker 3: should win. Does the bye week... um, change the calendar
- 14:58Speaker 3: of this week at all? Like, did you guys get
- 15:00Speaker 3: to do a little bit extra install last week? So
- 15:02Speaker 3: you're ahead of schedule this week, or does the routine
- 15:05Speaker 3: go back to exactly what it would be in a
- 15:07Speaker 3: normal game week?
- 15:09Speaker 5: Um, I think the routine, yeah, I think the routine
- 15:13Speaker 5: definitely stays the same. Um, we were able to obviously
- 15:16Speaker 5: lift a little bit more last week, just be able
- 15:19Speaker 5: to build up, build our muscle back, um, that we've
- 15:21Speaker 5: lost the first four games. You could say, um, And then,
- 15:26Speaker 5: I mean, yeah, install was definitely, we're able to, again,
- 15:29Speaker 5: put in, tried so many new plays just to see
- 15:32Speaker 5: do we want to continue to take it into the
- 15:35Speaker 5: season or what do we feel comfortable with and things
- 15:37Speaker 5: like that.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Who did you watch this last weekend football-wise, or did
- 15:43Speaker 2: you get away from the game?
- 15:45Speaker 4: I watched everybody.
- 15:47Speaker 5: I had the one TV had the mixture of all
- 15:50Speaker 5: four things, and then the other one was, I think
- 15:54Speaker 5: it was switching between like Auburn and Ohio state.
- 15:58Speaker 4: I want to say, but yeah, I got to watch
- 16:00Speaker 4: all of them. Yeah. There was some interesting games this weekend.
- 16:04Speaker 3: There was some crazy games this weekend when you, when
- 16:06Speaker 3: you were watching, um, are you, do you hone in
- 16:10Speaker 3: on quarterbacks and be like, I like what that guy does.
- 16:13Speaker 2: I got to try that. Like, or do you just
- 16:15Speaker 2: watch as a fan?
- 16:16Speaker 5: Um, I would definitely say I definitely key in on
- 16:19Speaker 5: the quarterback more than any position just cause I play it.
- 16:22Speaker 4: But, um, I definitely just watch as a fan. I'm
- 16:25Speaker 4: just like, dang.
- 16:26Speaker 3: That's crazy. There were some really interesting games this weekend.
- 16:31Speaker 3: In the Big 12, there were some interesting games. I mean, obviously,
- 16:35Speaker 3: we're watching teams like Houston. They're coming up on the schedule. Arizona, BYU.
- 16:40Speaker 3: BYU had a tough one on the road against TCU.
- 16:43Speaker 3: It's an ugly win, but it's a win, right? I mean,
- 16:46Speaker 3: we've said this kind of every week when you've sat down.
- 16:49Speaker 3: The more I watch you all and the more I
- 16:51Speaker 3: watch the rest of the Big 12, the more confident
- 16:54Speaker 3: I've become that this thing is very attainable, that it's
- 16:58Speaker 3: wide open. I don't know who would be on the
- 17:00Speaker 3: opposite side as a favorite. I mean, Texas Tech keeps winning,
- 17:03Speaker 3: but BYU keeps winning. But that game against TCU showed
- 17:08Speaker 3: that they maybe have a couple awards here. So, I mean,
- 17:11Speaker 3: what we're seeing is that the Big 12 and the
- 17:14Speaker 3: Big 12 championship are very attainable.
- 17:17Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, I think it's– I mean, for us, I
- 17:21Speaker 4: think it's pretty good.
- 17:23Speaker 5: We feel pretty confident about, you know, every game we
- 17:25Speaker 5: go into.
- 17:26Speaker 4: But, yeah, the.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Big 12 is definitely hitting the point where, like, who
- 17:31Speaker 5: you think is the bottom of Big 12 can easily
- 17:33Speaker 5: shock you and start competing with maybe the top five
- 17:36Speaker 5: teams that we think that's in the Big 12.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Which is another– because the schedule says what it says, right?
- 17:41Speaker 3: You look at the schedule, and we did the whole
- 17:43Speaker 3: preseason things like, oh, this is actually a pretty friendly
- 17:45Speaker 3: schedule for the University of Utah. But you just made
- 17:48Speaker 3: the point, and it's absolutely accurate that, like, a team
- 17:51Speaker 3: that you you didn't think much of can also be dangerous.
- 17:55Speaker 3: And that has been a characteristic of the PAC 12 before.
- 17:58Speaker 2: The big 12 thing happened. And now obviously the big
- 18:00Speaker 2: 12 has been that way.
- 18:02Speaker 3: So I guess it just means you got to stay
- 18:04Speaker 3: dialed in and prepare for everybody the same.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Yeah. Thanks.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Is that a challenge for this team?
- 18:10Speaker 3: Like you all start reading your own headlines, feeling like,
- 18:13Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, like we got a squad here.
- 18:16Speaker 2: We're really good. Or does everybody stay on an even
- 18:20Speaker 2: keel for the most part?
- 18:21Speaker 5: I think, Scali keeps us on a trajectory of staying humbled.
- 18:27Speaker 5: Scali definitely humbles us and just lets us know, like,
- 18:31Speaker 5: every game is our championship, however you want.
- 18:34Speaker 4: To look at it.
- 18:35Speaker 5: If we're not undefeated, I mean, we've seen last year
- 18:37Speaker 5: that our one loss kept us out of playoffs. So
- 18:44Speaker 5: our two losses kept us out of playoffs. So we're
- 18:46Speaker 5: just like, you know, losses aren't affordable.
- 18:49Speaker 4: They just aren't, so.
- 18:51Speaker 5: Going into every week, we make sure we dial in
- 18:53Speaker 5: to who our opponent is. We're not overlooking anybody. We
- 18:57Speaker 5: got to get it done week by week.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Devin Dampier for another couple of minutes here on the
- 19:03Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell Show. When you look at a team like Kansas,
- 19:08Speaker 3: they're kind of what we're talking about here with the
- 19:11Speaker 3: parity in the conference. They're 2-2 right now. They beat
- 19:16Speaker 3: Long Island because, of course, you're supposed to beat Long Island.
- 19:18Speaker 3: They beat Middle Tennessee. they played against Missouri in the
- 19:22Speaker 3: border war. They had a close loss against Arizona state.
- 19:26Speaker 3: So right now, Kansas has not proven to us on
- 19:29Speaker 3: film that they can beat a team like the university
- 19:32Speaker 3: of Utah. You guys are heavy favorites in this one
- 19:34Speaker 3: for an obvious reason. How do you go out and
- 19:37Speaker 3: make sure that, you know, you, you don't stub a toe.
- 19:39Speaker 3: How do you go out and make sure that this
- 19:41Speaker 3: game goes according to prediction?
- 19:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:44Speaker 5: I think the way I carry myself is huge for
- 19:47Speaker 5: the offense throughout the week on how I carry myself,
- 19:51Speaker 5: how dialed in I am on the details. If we
- 19:55Speaker 5: do something wrong in practice, let's not let it slide.
- 19:59Speaker 5: We all got expectations that we need to live up
- 20:02Speaker 5: to every single week.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Again, Scali is probably the best.
- 20:09Speaker 5: Best coach right now for us i think he's doing
- 20:13Speaker 5: honestly a wonderful job but um he's just putting us
- 20:16Speaker 5: in situations where we're able to like he's he's preaching
- 20:22Speaker 5: it he's showing us he wants us to be the
- 20:24Speaker 5: best team possible by the end of the week every
- 20:26Speaker 5: single week.
- 20:27Speaker 3: What's he like at halftime like we morgan scally practice
- 20:32Speaker 3: morgan scally high energy guy I mean, as a coordinator,
- 20:36Speaker 3: he was loud.
- 20:36Speaker 2: He was crazy.
- 20:37Speaker 3: He's dialed that down. It seems a little bit as
- 20:39Speaker 3: a head coach, you'd have to tell me, but what's
- 20:41Speaker 3: he like at halftime? Cause on the sideline during games,
- 20:45Speaker 3: he's like stoic. He doesn't really get worked up. He
- 20:47Speaker 3: just like, he's just standing there with his arms folded.
- 20:50Speaker 3: I didn't expect him to be that way when he
- 20:52Speaker 3: became the head coach. I thought he'd be a little
- 20:53Speaker 3: bit more animated. We'd see him talking a little bit more. He,
- 20:57Speaker 3: he seems like he's just like cool and collected the
- 21:00Speaker 3: whole game. What's it like at halftime? Um, You know,
- 21:04Speaker 3: it definitely depends on who we played. Some teams has
- 21:08Speaker 3: talked a little bit more trash than others towards us.
- 21:11Speaker 3: So sometimes you'll get the, that's a great first half.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Let's finish it. And sometimes you get, let's continue to roll.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Like it gets a little fiery.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Yeah. They, they asked for this. So let's, let's keep
- 21:24Speaker 4: it going.
- 21:24Speaker 5: And you know, it's kind of the two vibes you
- 21:27Speaker 5: rather get like that, but yeah, no, he's, very supportive,
- 21:32Speaker 5: very chill. And I think the chill aspect of a
- 21:34Speaker 5: coach honestly helps. It makes us feel like, you know,
- 21:38Speaker 5: we're good. There's no need to panic. The way needs
- 21:40Speaker 5: to panic.
- 21:44Speaker 3: The distribution of touches is something that you and I
- 21:48Speaker 3: have talked about literally every week. And we've seen kind
- 21:51Speaker 3: of this, like a way Sean had a quiet week.
- 21:53Speaker 3: And now last week, way Sean was doing everything. And,
- 21:57Speaker 3: he was also the leading receiver and you have this
- 21:58Speaker 3: stable of wide receivers. All of them are really talented
- 22:01Speaker 3: and really good. When you're running that successfully, you don't
- 22:03Speaker 3: need to throw the ball as much. When you're playing
- 22:05Speaker 3: with a lead, you don't need to throw the ball
- 22:06Speaker 3: as much. Now that we're, you know, a third of
- 22:09Speaker 3: the way through the season, has there been any trouble
- 22:11Speaker 3: in paradise? Is there anyone coming up to your locker
- 22:13Speaker 3: and just be like, man, you've got to get me
- 22:15Speaker 3: the ball a few more times this week. Or Mac
- 22:17Speaker 3: G's getting his ear chewed off by like whoever saying like, Hey,
- 22:21Speaker 3: I can do more than I'm doing right now because
- 22:24Speaker 3: that is one of the, it's a great problem to have,
- 22:26Speaker 3: but it is one of the things we've been talking about.
- 22:28Speaker 3: How do you keep all of these offensive weapons happy?
- 22:31Speaker 3: And I guess winning keeps everyone happy, but we've seen
- 22:35Speaker 3: it with a couple of guys now where they show
- 22:37Speaker 3: they can have a monster game and then the next
- 22:39Speaker 3: week there's not much.
- 22:40Speaker 2: So how is it handled?
- 22:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I think offensive-wise the biggest thing that everyone knows
- 22:48Speaker 5: is we honestly take advantage of what the defense gives us.
- 22:52Speaker 5: We take advantage of the situation. That comes apart. Practice
- 22:57Speaker 5: is very, everyone gets the ball as well too. It's
- 23:01Speaker 5: nothing new when we get to the game. It's not
- 23:02Speaker 5: like we're trying to force the ball to one person
- 23:05Speaker 5: throughout practice and then some people randomly get the ball.
- 23:09Speaker 4: During practice, I feel like the ball.
- 23:10Speaker 5: Is just as equally as spread just because we're trying
- 23:14Speaker 5: to mimic the same looks that we're going to get.
- 23:17Speaker 4: In the game.
- 23:18Speaker 5: I just don't think Scali recruits people that Don't think
- 23:22Speaker 5: team first. I think that's one of his biggest things
- 23:25Speaker 5: when it comes to him recruiting players to the Utes
- 23:29Speaker 5: is to get team player first guys.
- 23:32Speaker 3: We saw some crazy stuff this weekend, including, you know,
- 23:36Speaker 3: you have players getting kicked off teams a couple of
- 23:38Speaker 3: weeks ago for not handling a situation right. This last weekend,
- 23:42Speaker 3: Colorado State's defensive coordinator walked off the sideline, left the
- 23:47Speaker 3: team in the game.
- 23:49Speaker 4: D.C.? The D.C. Like, what do you mean?
- 23:52Speaker 2: Jim Mora, the coach said, Hey, you're doing a terrible job.
- 23:57Speaker 4: Basically.
- 23:58Speaker 3: I don't know exactly how he said it, but said
- 24:00Speaker 3: somebody else is going to call the defensive plays.
- 24:02Speaker 2: The rest of the game took the play calling duties
- 24:05Speaker 2: away from him. And he just left.
- 24:08Speaker 5: Whoa.
- 24:09Speaker 4: So that's wicked.
- 24:11Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 24:12Speaker 3: And it gives me an appreciation for what we're talking
- 24:15Speaker 3: about here. Like just sort of an even keel coaching
- 24:18Speaker 3: staff and even keel team culture where look, success and
- 24:22Speaker 3: failure are going to cause people to be emotional or whatever,
- 24:25Speaker 3: but correct me if I'm wrong. It seems like this
- 24:29Speaker 3: team is kind of insulated against that volatile reaction, anything,
- 24:33Speaker 3: because like, even if a guy reacts poorly to a
- 24:37Speaker 3: loss or a bad play or something, I don't anticipate
- 24:41Speaker 3: him getting kicked off a football team or asked to
- 24:43Speaker 3: leave the football team.
- 24:44Speaker 4: That's crazy.
- 24:45Speaker 2: He did that at Colorado a couple of weeks ago, right?
- 24:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:48Speaker 4: I heard about that one.
- 24:49Speaker 3: That's it's all wild to me, but it feels like,
- 24:52Speaker 3: that in just, I mean, not even a full calendar
- 24:55Speaker 3: year now, it feels like Morgan has it figured out
- 24:57Speaker 3: with you guys.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:59Speaker 5: I honestly think he's been so prepared. And, you know,
- 25:02Speaker 5: that's a shout-out to Witt, too. I think Scali was
- 25:04Speaker 5: able to take all the goods out of Witt and
- 25:08Speaker 5: also make his spin on what he thought needed to
- 25:10Speaker 5: change when he became the guy. And I just think
- 25:13Speaker 5: he's been under that position so long, just waiting to
- 25:17Speaker 5: become a head coach for so long that, like, He
- 25:20Speaker 5: probably felt like he was a head coach for maybe
- 25:23Speaker 5: the last three years, just like honestly just being ready
- 25:26Speaker 5: for it. And now, like, now that it's here, it's
- 25:29Speaker 5: nothing that he wasn't expecting to happen.
- 25:31Speaker 2: You just mentioned Witt.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Have you been talking, have you been texting, have you
- 25:34Speaker 3: been chatting with any of your guys that are at
- 25:36Speaker 3: Michigan right now?
- 25:37Speaker 2: Things are ugly right now in Ann Arbor. Have you
- 25:39Speaker 2: talked to any of them?
- 25:40Speaker 4: No, I haven't got to talk to them, but, man, yeah.
- 25:44Speaker 4: It sucks. Yeah, it hurts. It hurts for them, no doubt.
- 25:47Speaker 4: They'll like to see it for those guys.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Or maybe if you're a Utah fan who's mad about
- 25:51Speaker 3: the whole thing, maybe you do like to see it.
- 25:53Speaker 3: But whatever.
- 25:54Speaker 2: That's not what we're here to talk about on the show.
- 25:57Speaker 3: So back at Rice-Eccles Stadium, that road game was kind
- 26:03Speaker 3: of what we thought it was going to be. What
- 26:06Speaker 3: do you expect as you guys make the trip back,
- 26:08Speaker 3: another night game at Rice-Eccles?
- 26:10Speaker 4: Man, night games at Rice-Eccles.
- 26:14Speaker 5: That's really the... That's really the saying. It's always electric
- 26:18Speaker 5: at night. Our fans always show up. I think we
- 26:22Speaker 5: always show up at night. So definitely expecting a good turnout.
- 26:27Speaker 5: We definitely got to be dialed in for the time.
- 26:30Speaker 4: But, you know, I'm extremely confident in our team.
- 26:34Speaker 3: 82 degrees and cloudy is what's expected for Saturday in
- 26:38Speaker 3: Salt Lake City. So it'll be a lot cooler by
- 26:41Speaker 3: the time you guys all roll out there to actually play.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Did the weather affect you in Ames at all on
- 26:50Speaker 3: the road at Iowa State? It ended up being not
- 26:53Speaker 3: as rainy, I think, as they expected it to be
- 26:54Speaker 3: at first?
- 26:55Speaker 5: Yeah, it wasn't as rainy. I want to say there
- 26:59Speaker 5: was only one quarter. It started raining a little bit.
- 27:02Speaker 5: But besides that, yeah, just the ground was wet and
- 27:07Speaker 5: freaking hard to cut and stuff.
- 27:09Speaker 4: But besides that, I mean. We're good.
- 27:11Speaker 2: All right.
- 27:12Speaker 3: We were, we were trying to figure out, this would
- 27:13Speaker 3: be the last thing I'll respect your time here. We
- 27:17Speaker 3: were trying to figure out, cause we get to be
- 27:18Speaker 3: really nitpicky when a team's four and O and you've
- 27:21Speaker 3: got a top five offense and defense in the conference.
- 27:25Speaker 3: When you look at all the efficiency numbers on both
- 27:27Speaker 3: sides of the ball, you're the only team in the
- 27:29Speaker 3: country right now, actually that's top five in both on
- 27:33Speaker 3: the offensive and defensive S and P plus, if I'm
- 27:35Speaker 3: not mistaken. So like, Really good things are happening. So
- 27:39Speaker 3: we have to find problems in a bye week to
- 27:41Speaker 3: talk about. The third quarter is the quiet quarter for
- 27:45Speaker 3: you all. Offensively and defensively, you score fewer points and
- 27:49Speaker 3: get more points scored on you than all the other
- 27:51Speaker 3: quarters in a game. Is there something at halftime that
- 27:55Speaker 3: the coaches have talked about or you feel a need
- 27:59Speaker 3: to adjust or anything? Is there an explanation for third
- 28:02Speaker 3: quarters being slower than the other three?
- 28:06Speaker 5: I don't know if there's any big explanation um i
- 28:10Speaker 5: mean for the most part most of our games are
- 28:12Speaker 5: kind of up by a lot by the time third
- 28:14Speaker 5: quarter comes around so um you can maybe say there's
- 28:17Speaker 5: a motive of just running the ball getting time out
- 28:21Speaker 5: uh defense just getting stops as usual um but yeah
- 28:27Speaker 5: no i wouldn't say there's a reason that i think
- 28:28Speaker 5: that's something that you know we're able to pay attention
- 28:30Speaker 5: to now now that we see um we were efficient
- 28:34Speaker 5: there last week. That is definitely going to be emphasis
- 28:36Speaker 5: this week that after halftime, you know, we come out
- 28:38Speaker 5: rolling the same way we start off games.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Like no one gets bored at halftime or like eat
- 28:44Speaker 3: too much at halftime or anything like, cause, cause there's this,
- 28:47Speaker 3: there's this fan. I think it's a, it's a misconception where,
- 28:51Speaker 3: I mean, we, and we had this conversation last week
- 28:54Speaker 3: during the bi-week just like, Oh, we'll halftime adjustments. And
- 28:56Speaker 3: it's like, not that many things are actually adjusted at halftime.
- 29:00Speaker 3: It's like guys have a snack and pee at halftime.
- 29:02Speaker 3: And then, kind of go back out there. There's not like,
- 29:05Speaker 3: you're not putting new plays in a playbook at halftime.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:09Speaker 2: So I don't think that much can change.
- 29:12Speaker 3: At halftime for a game, but then when the results
- 29:15Speaker 3: are what they are, you're like, okay, is there something
- 29:17Speaker 3: going on there?
- 29:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:19Speaker 5: I mean, I always say definitely, I wouldn't say full
- 29:22Speaker 5: out switch their defense, but they definitely did it a lot.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Did they change something? It was definitely different. So, so you.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Came out and in the third quarter, like you're seeing
- 29:32Speaker 3: a different pre-snap picture than the whole first half.
- 29:35Speaker 5: Yeah, just the stunts and stuff they started doing, different twists,
- 29:39Speaker 5: the whole line game and stuff like that. So, yeah,
- 29:43Speaker 5: they definitely came out with a new motive. But that after,
- 29:46Speaker 5: you know, we settled down. You know, a lot of
- 29:48Speaker 5: that stuff's on us, too. We just got to be
- 29:53Speaker 5: better execution. You know, we always want that.
- 29:55Speaker 4: But, yeah.
- 29:58Speaker 3: When– when they got to within a score and you
- 30:01Speaker 3: all had to just play big boy football and all right,
- 30:05Speaker 3: let's go seal this thing out.
- 30:07Speaker 2: What is the conversation like?
- 30:08Speaker 3: Is there a conversation between you and the offensive line way? Sean,
- 30:12Speaker 3: maybe Morgan sticks his head into the offensive huddle when
- 30:16Speaker 3: it's like, all right, they're getting a little bit too
- 30:17Speaker 3: close for comfort here. Let's go seal this game. And
- 30:20Speaker 3: obviously you did. Was there a conversation beforehand?
- 30:24Speaker 4: Um, I just brought together the offense and I just
- 30:27Speaker 4: told them like, Relax. We're good.
- 30:30Speaker 5: I just felt like there was a lot of panic,
- 30:32Speaker 5: a lot of looking at the scoreboard. I wouldn't say disbelief,
- 30:37Speaker 5: but I just wanted to be the guy that made
- 30:39Speaker 5: sure we're chilling.
- 30:43Speaker 4: They play ball.
- 30:46Speaker 5: None of that above respect for them, but we know
- 30:49Speaker 5: who we are.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Simple as that.
- 30:50Speaker 5: We thought LeSean was having a great game already.
- 30:58Speaker 4: You know, why not give them that ball?
- 30:59Speaker 5: And then I think that allowed the pass game to
- 31:02Speaker 5: get open with a few times we were able to
- 31:04Speaker 5: throw on that drive. But, yeah, for the most part,
- 31:06Speaker 5: just we felt like they were dropping a lot of guys.
- 31:10Speaker 5: The safeties were playing deep. You know, they stopped respecting
- 31:12Speaker 5: Wade Sean, and we just started handing it again.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Well, good luck. Obviously, have fun. Stay healthy. We'll see
